Jennifer Aniston on being a ‘badass’ after ‘Friends’ After playing sitcom sweetheart Rachel Green in longrunning television comedy “Friends” for 10 years, Jennifer Aniston has spent the last decade looking for roles where she can “kick some ass.” In “Life of Crime,” out in U.S. theaters on Friday, Aniston taps into a 1970s Detroit trophy wife and socialite, Mickey Dawson, who finds herself held for ransom while her cheating husband debates whether to pay for her release. Aniston, 45, talked to Reuters about the excitement of being in a caper comedy, playing strong female characters and the “Friends” phenomenon 10 years after it concluded its run. Q: What resonated with you about the character of Mickey? A: It was such fun, as any Elmore Leonardadapted screenplay you would imagine would be, and her character’s arc was so awesome. Q: How did you connect with her initial passiveness at her crumbling marriage? A: I was a kid in the seventies, and women were stuck in unhappy situations that they didn’t know how to get out of, not like today where if something smells even a little bit bad, it’s like ‘I’m high-tailing it out of here.’ So I really loved how her character was written and she was actually a badass. Q: How did you interpret Mickey’s eventual connection to Louis (played by John Hawkes), who kidnapped her? A: Oh my lord, he was saving her, he was her savior in an odd, twisted way. And I think she could feel that, even under the mask, she could feel that, and it’s sort of this odd couple relationship that forms, and I think it’s quite lovely. Q: What type of women have you found yourself drawn to after playing Rachel on “Friends” for 10 years? A: Women usually who have a really positive arc and become stronger at the end of it, coming out from underneath cir-
cumstances that just seem unsurvivable, and the fact that you actually get through it and survive and get stronger and kick some ass. I like that. Q: How to you still reflect on the show and its fans? A: I love how it sort of keeps on, it’s like the little Energizer bunny, it just keeps on ticking, it’s amazing. GIANYAR - Foreign workers who work in the area of Gianyar County are required to pay a monthly fee at USD 100 effective Monday (Sep 1). This policy relates to the enactment of the Law No. 8/2014 dated July 14, 2014 regarding the levies of the extension of Foreign Worker Employment Permit (IMTA). As a major tourist destination in Bali, Gianyar has accommodation facilities becoming the center of tourism and handicraft production worth exporting that stimulates the Gianyar employers to hire foreign workers in order to win competition. This potential provides a great opportunity to increase the region-
ally generated revenue (PAD). All this time, the extension of Foreign Worker Employment Permit was paid to central government. However, through the regulation, Gianyar County had a chance to take it over. Moreover, the Government Regulation No.97/2012 has mandated the local government to
create a legal instrument for the levy collection of the extension of Foreign Worker Employment Permit. Until the end of August 2014, a total of 67 foreign workers had been registered in the area of Gianyar County. They represent the data of central government whose levy collection of the Foreign Worker Employment Permit has now been bestowed. Of the 67 workers, 23 people have extended the permit of previous year. Additional Foreign Worker Employment Permit from the Minister of Manpower in 2013 came to 21
workers and up to June 2014 it increased to 23 workers. “This potential will continue to grow after the issuance of new permit until the end of December 2014 and the results of the ongoing data collection,” said the Head of Gianyar Manpower and Settlement Agency, Gede Widarma Suharta. Extension tariff of the Foreign Worker Employment Permit as much as USD 100 per person per month was remitted to the Regional Treasury via the Treasury Receipt at the Gianyar Manpower and Settlement Agency or through a bank specified for the extension
of permit expired on August 31, 2014 and so on. “This registration is made by the foreign worker users in Gianyar,” he said. Amidst the existence of numerous tourism companies, there was possibility if some foreign workers have not been registered yet. Against this condition, Widarma said that his party would conduct an inspection next month to several companies so as to know in person the foreigners working in the company existing in Gianyar County, but had not been registered or had the Foreign Worker Employment Permit, he explained. Hog-plum herbal drink, typical drink of Bangli County

BANGLI - Traveling to Bangli County seems incomplete without enjoying loloh cemcem or hog-plum (Spondias pinnata) herbal drink. This typical traditional drink of Bangli is widely encountered at Penglipuran village, indeed denoting the center for the making of hog-plum herbal drink. Nowadays, this drink has been widely marketed to other regions and often becomes favorite drink in some culinary booths in the Bali Arts Festival (BAF). It is prepared with a very simple process. Even, the ingredients are widely available as they are used to make natural fence by residents of Penglipuran. In Balinese language, it is known as loloh. If herbal drink has been imagined to have a bitter and unpleasant taste, the hog-plum herbal drink has a very refreshing taste in throat. So far, it is commonly served as a complementary drink while eating Balinese food. One of the hog-plum herbal drink makers, Mom Nyampuh, said the making process of this herbal drink was very simple. Main ingredient of the herbal drink was hog-plum leaf growing in the home yard of local residents. Having been finely washed, the leaf had to be crushed or pulverized. Then, it was added with warm water as needed.
Since the leaf tended to have sour taste, it should be added with palm sugar to give sweet taste during the preparation. Besides, it needed to be added with grated young coconut to give fresh sensation. Additional ingredients added to the preparation of this herbal drink caused it to have a variety of flavors. In the past, this herbal drink was often mixed with fried peanuts. According to Mom Nyampuh, although the herbal drink was totally made from natural ingredients, it could last long enough, moreover if it was chilled in refrigerator. “If this herbal drink is kept in refrigerator, it can hold for three days. Oth-
erwise, it can just hold for whole day,” she said. Since it was in high demand, the herbal drink used to quench thirst was admitted to have a promising business prospect. Not a few people of Penglipuran had deeply involved in the making of this herbal drink and sold it to the market. “I have been selling this kind of herbal drink for 18 years,” she added. Due to be in high demand, she could produce the hog-plum herbal drink as much as 1,000 bottles of mineral water each day. Selling price of this traditional drink was affordable. Condition of quarry at risk of being unable to be restored

AMLAPURA - Up to these days, the reclamation funds for quarry area in Karangasem have not been used. The funds intended to restore the condition after the mining activities stay to settle because no entrepreneurs have been willing to carry out the reclamation since 2000. As a result, the environmental damage caused by
the quarry is at risk of being unable to be restored. In accordance with Regulation of Karangasem Regent No. 14/2008 on the quarry reclamation warranty deposit, every entrepreneur carrying out a quarry activity is imposed with reclamation warranty fund worth about IDR 50 million. This limited amount of fees is charged for every one hectare of quarry area.
Unfortunately from 2000 to 2014, no entrepreneur wanted to use the funds to restore the quarry area. When asked for his confirmation about the reclamation fund, the Head of Economic Affairs of the Karangasem government, I Wayan Mindra, revealed the reclamation funds deposited to the government had not been used so far for the reclamation of the quarry area.
According to him, many businessmen claimed the fund worth IDR 50 million was not enough to do reclamation for the area of one hectare. “Reclamation fund worth IDR 50 million was just enacted in 2010. Previously, the reclamation fund was approximately IDR 2.5 million. The government admitted to face difficulty to make reclamation with such amount of fund,” he said.
Besides, the obligation to perform reclamation lay in the entrepreneurs that had owned a mining permit. In terms of the reclamation fund collected amounting to IDR 1.5 billion, the government was not able to perform the reclamation by using the existing fund. The condition was exacerbated by many quarry companies that were operating illegally without depositing reclamation warranty fund. (dwa)

DENPASAR - The suspects Tommy and Heather remain to keep silent and do not want to be examined. Actually they have been arrested behind bars for more than two weeks. Both suspects were charged under Article 338 of the Criminal Code regarding the murder case against Sheila Ann Von Weise.
Chief of Denpasar Police Criminal Investigation, Nengah Sadiarta, said on Sunday (Aug 31) that since they were arrested and detained on Wednesday (Aug 13), the lovers were still speechless and did not want to give any information when questioned. However, he said it did not have an impact on the process of investigation. “The investigation process keeps going, even if
the suspects do not want to talk,” he added. The investigators had set them as suspects. They were subject to Article 338 of the Criminal Code with the threat of 15-year imprisonment and maximally lifetime imprisonment. To prevent conspiracy, the arrest of the two suspects was separated. The suspect Heather was arrested at the Denpasar Police, while Tommy at
the Bali Police. “Being pregnant, the suspect Heather sometimes gets nausea and we immediately take her to Trijata Hospital. It is the only her complaint. We always monitor her health,” said Sadiarta. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

TABANAN - Thousands of kites from the regions across Bali vivaciously competed for the best in the arena of Ganesha Kite Festival held by the community of Bengkel Kawan customary village, Bengkel village, Kediri subdistrict, Sunday (Aug 31).
DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, California — For years scientists have theorized about how large rocks — some weighing hundreds of pounds — zigzag across Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park, leaving long trails etched in the earth.
The competition was held in the area of paddy field at Batu Tampih, Pangkung Tibah village, Kediri subdistrict. Chief of Bengkel Kawan customary village, and chairman of the Ganesha Kite Festival organizing committee, I Ketut Sutama, said the kite festival was held for fund raising in relation to temple renovation. “Other than for fund raising, the competition was also served as a means to channel the hobby of kite lovers,” he explained. He added the Ganesha Kite Festival this year was the third implementation. The previous festivals were held in 2006 and 2009, “In the future, we do hope the Ganesha Kite Festival can be held every year,” he said. Moreover, according to him, the response of local government was very positive to the implementation

The “GPS stones,” which were engineered to record movement and velocity, were stationed at the southern end of the playa where rocks begin their strange journeys after tumbling down a cliff. At the end of last year, Richard and James Norris returned to inspect the instruments. “We found the playa covered with ice,” Richard recalled to the Times. “We also noticed fresh rock trails near shards of thin ice stacked up along the shoreline.” The following afternoon, “we were sitting on a mountainside and admiring the view when a light wind kicked up and the ice started cracking,” he said. “Suddenly, the whole process unfolded before our eyes.”

DNA shows Arctic group’s isolation lasted 4,000 years WASHINGTON - A long-gone group of ancient people known as Paleo-Eskimos lived in isolation in the North American Arctic for more than 4,000 years, said a study on Thursday. They trekked from Siberia across the Bering Strait to their new home, and made no contact with other cultures who’d made the same journey at different times in history, including Native Americans and the Inuit people. These Paleo-Eskimos eventually disappeared about 700 years ago, around the time when the ancestors of the modern-day Inuit moved eastward from Alaska, researchers said in the US journal Science. “They were, in a sense, sitting ducks and either they were pushed out into the fringes
of the Arctic area where they couldn’t survive economically or else they may simply have been annihilated in some strange way,” said William Fitzhugh, director of the Arctic study center at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Researchers obtained DNA from ancient human bone, teeth and hair samples from Arctic Siberia, Alaska, Canada and Greenland for the study. They also sequenced the genomes of two present-day Greenlandic Inuit, two Siberian Nivkhs, one Aleutian Islander and two Athabascan Native Americans. A study of their genetics shows the PaleoEskimos were not related to Native Americans or the Inuit. Known as the Saqqaq and Dorset people,
these Paleo-Eskimos lived in small villages with just a handful of houses and 20-30 people in each. Their population size is hard to know for certain, but researchers said it probably numbered a few thousand. Cousins Richard Norris and James Norris said the movement is made possible when ice sheets that form after rare overnight rains melt in the rising sun, making the hard ground muddy and slick. On Dec. 20, 2013, the cousins catalogued 60 rocks moving across the playa’s pancake-flat surface. “Observed rock movement occurred on sunny, clear days, following nights of sub-freezing temperatures,” they wrote in a report published Wednesday in the online scientific journal PLOS ONE. The conclusion proves theories that have been floated since geologists began studying the moving rocks in the 1940s. The phenomenon doesn’t happen often because it rarely rains in the notoriously hot and dry desert valley. The rocks move about 15 feet (5 meters) per minute, according to the report.

GIANYAR - If residents of Mas village, Ubud, were once surprised by the finding of crocodile in the river, last Sunday (Aug 31) around 07:00 a.m., residents of Wanayu Mas hamlet, Bedulu village, Blahbatuh, was surprised by the finding of green turtle in the river of Subak Wanayu Mas whereas it is ordinarily living at sea. Approximately the turtle found was 50 years old. It was visible from the large size of green turtle found. It drew the attention of hundreds of residents. Its carapace had the length of 65 cm and width of 64 cm. When found, the turtle condition was quite alarming. People said if the turtle carapace looked mossy, while the existing scales on the carapace seemed unclear. It was first discovered by Wanayu Mas resident, Made Suweta. At that time, he was having a promenade and suddenly saw an object moving in the river. When approached, in fact it was a turtle. He was afraid of seeing something unusual found in the river. The finding of turtle was then notified to surrounding residents. As consequence, hundreds of local residents
were made surprised by the findings of such green turtle. When attracting the attention of local residents, the turtle entered the tunnel of the road. After that, local residents contacted Gusti Putu Ali Sudira, a Wanayu resident who worked in Gianyar Livestock Agency. The turtle was then captured and taken to his home and reported to the office of Bali Natural Resources Agency. The Head of Conservation Section for Region II of the Bali Natural Resources Agency, I Ketut Catur Marbawa, said the green turtle had been rescued and commended in the Bali Safari for observation. When rescued, the turtle was in good health condition, but it only got a minor injury on foot when it was evacuated by residents. According to him, the green turtle found by residents belonged to a rare turtle species that normally lived in sea water. Associated with the presence of the freshwater turtle, in this case he had not got any clear information from residents. “Judging from the age of turtle reaching 50 years, it is not possible for it to live in freshwater for a long time,” he said while adding that he would find out further information about it. Alibaba’s online and mobile commerce businesses will be controlled by a “variable interest entity,” an arrangement meant to allow investors to buy into Internet and other businesses in which Beijing bans or limits foreign ownership. Used since the 1990s by Internet operators such as Baidu Inc. and Sina Corp., VIEs are based on contracts that say an offshore entity in the Cayman Islands or another corporate haven will control a Chinese company. Foreign shareholders get a stake in that offshore vehicle and profits but no ownership of the Chinese company. “The VIE structure is the only way at present to play this game,” said Paul Gillis, a professor at Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management. “So if you want to invest in restricted sectors of China’s economy, you have to get comfortable with the VIE structure.” Chinese regulators have left the status of VIEs ambiguous. Most operate uneventfully, but courts have rejected contracts if they were deemed to be an attempt to evade ownership curbs. Unfortunately, Payangan subdistrict does not have any tourist destination. Of the 20 tourist attractions, local government of Gianyar only manages seven tourist attractions. Ironically, only Tirta Empul and Goa Gajah become the leading destinations, while others begin to decline in tourist visit, even some attractions are only dropped in by travelers. Gunung Kawi Sebatu tourist attraction in Ubud, for instance, was visited by 41,879 foreign travelers in 2011, but it dropped to 34,352 in 2012 and dropped again in 2013 to 30,350. Meanwhile, up to July 2014 the tourist visit dropped again to 16,847. Similar condition also occurred to Yeh Pulu tourist attraction in Blahbatuh diminishing from 99,920 foreign travelers in 2011, decreased to 8,631 (2012), decreased again to 7,838 (2013) and ultimately until July 2014 only reached 3,798. In the meantime, the Gianyar subdistrict from 2011 to July 2014 was visited by 1,204 foreign travelers (Sidan nature tourism) without the visit of domestic travelers. So far, the attraction offered by Tulamben Beach and surrounding areas is ornamental fish and coral reefs in the Liberty shipwreck. It has become an amazing dive attraction. Marine attraction both diving and snorkeling are frequently requested by travelers visiting the Jemeluk Beach to Bunutan. In harmony with the increasing tourist visit to the region, many investors then

Moscow urges Ukraine talks to back cease-fire

MOSCOW — Russia’s foreign minister urged those holding a new round of talks Monday on easing Ukraine’s crisis to push for a cease-fire between Ukrainian government troops and pro-Russian separatists. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also said Russia would not intervene militarily in Ukraine, defying reports by the Ukrainian government, NATO and Western nations that Russia has already sent troops, artillery and tanks across Ukraine’s southeast border to reinforce the separatists. “There will be no military intervention,” Lavrov told students at Moscow State Institute of International Relations on Monday, the first day of classes for schools and universities across the country. “We call for an exclusively peaceful settlement of this severe crisis, this tragedy.” He said the priority of the socalled contact group at the talks in Minsk, the Belarusian capital, should be reaching agreement on an immediate, unconditional cease-fire.
The group, which last met in late July, includes representatives of Ukraine, Russia and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. A separatist leader, Andrei Purgin, also was to take part. Purgin told the Interfax news agency that the separatists’ priority was to win recognition of their independence in eastern Ukraine,
which has a large Russian-speaking population. He said they also were willing to discuss the exchange of prisoners and a temporary ceasefire. Fighting in eastern Ukraine between the separatists and the Ukrainian government in Kiev began in mid-April, a month after Russia annexed Ukraine’s southern peninsula of Crimea.
Over the weekend, three people died and hundreds were injured in what amounted to running street battles between the police and the demonstrators. On Monday, protesters and police clashed in various areas of the city’s Red Zone, a sprawling complex of government buildings and grassy lawns in the center of Islamabad. The protesters, armed with clubs and many wearing gas masks, hurled rocks at the policemen. Five police officers, including a senior Islamabad police chief, and three protesters were taken to hospital, bleeding. The protesters made it to a gate that surrounds the prime minister’s residence where they were met by paramilitary Rangers and army troops. They also stormed into the building of the Pakistani state broadcaster, located in another area of the Red Zone, and forced the television briefly off the air. Inside the state TV building, the protesters moved through the corridors with sticks and clubs, smashing equipment as visibly nervous employees looked on. The rallies against Sharif constitute the biggest threat to his government little more than one year in office. Several rounds of negotiations between representatives of Khan and Qadri and the government have failed to make any headway. The two opposition leaders allege widespread fraud in the country’s May 2013 election, in which Sharif’s party won by a landslide. International observers had found no evidence indicating rampant election tampering. The protests began with a march to Islamabad from the eastern city of
Lahore on the country’s Independence Day, Aug. 14. Once in the capital, the protesters camped out near the parliament, pushing their demands. Khan and Qadri had called for millions to join them but crowds at the most numbered tens of thousands early on and at the height of the demonstrations. The rallies initially remained peaceful, though they forced a lockdown of Islamabad and badly harmed the city’s business life. Violence first erupted on Saturday, with police firing tear gas and clashing with protesters who pushed closer to the seat of government in the Red Zone. On Monday, Qadri’s followers reached the gate of the prime minister’s residence — the first of at least two layers of security protecting the house, a few hundred meters (yards) from the residence itself — and staged a sit-in there. “We have reached near the prime minister’s residence, wait for some time and you will hear the news of our ultimate victory,” Qadri urged them. At the state TV, senior official Athar Farooq said 20 cameras went missing as protesters overran the station. “The intruders seemed well trained” and were taking instructions over mobile phones during the breakin, he said. Several of the protesters took down Sharif’s portrait from a wall, threw it on the floor and stomped on it in anger. Ismatullah Niazi, another senior TV official told The Associated Press that the intruders also destroyed computers and other equipment, scuffled with employees and took food from the cafeteria.

Instead, the Americans were the ones on the ropes for nearly three quarters. “I guess we felt like last night’s game was pretty easy and tonight was going to be the same way, but Turkey came out and they gave us their punch from the beginning,” forward James Harden said. “We took it and we were sluggish. That second half we played a lot better.” Kenneth Faried scored 22 points, Anthony Davis all of his 19 in the second half, and the U.S. rebounded from a rare deficit at halftime to beat Turkey 98-77 on Sunday in the Basketball World Cup. A night after crushing Finland by 59 in its biggest rout ever while using NBA players in the former world championship, the Americans couldn’t take control against Turkey until early in the fourth quarter after compiling a 17-1 run. “I think we didn’t come ready to play in the first half and we can’t afford to do that if we want to win a gold medal,” Davis said. “So we’ve got to come out ready to play no matter who we’re playing against.” The Americans trailed 40-35 at halftime and Turkey led by six early in the third before the Americans could finally get the game into the quicker tempo

Instead, the Americans were the ones on the ropes for nearly three quarters. “I guess we felt like last night’s game was pretty easy and tonight was going to be the same way, but Turkey came out and they gave us their punch from the beginning,” forward James Harden said. “We took it and we were sluggish. That second half we played a lot better.” Kenneth Faried scored 22 points, Anthony Davis all of his 19 in the second half, and the U.S. rebounded from a rare deficit at halftime to beat Turkey 98-77 on Sunday in the Basketball World Cup. A night after crushing Finland by 59 in its biggest rout ever while using NBA players in the former world championship, the Americans couldn’t take control against Turkey until early in the fourth quarter after compiling a 17-1 run. “I think we didn’t come ready to play in the first half and we can’t afford to do that if we want to win a gold medal,” Davis said. “So we’ve got to come out ready to play no matter who we’re playing against.” The Americans trailed 40-35 at halftime and Turkey led by six early in the third before the Americans could finally get the game into the quicker tempo

Moscow urges Ukraine talks to back cease-fire

MOSCOW — Russia’s foreign minister urged those holding a new round of talks Monday on easing Ukraine’s crisis to push for a cease-fire between Ukrainian government troops and pro-Russian separatists. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also said Russia would not intervene militarily in Ukraine, defying reports by the Ukrainian government, NATO and Western nations that Russia has already sent troops, artillery and tanks across Ukraine’s southeast border to reinforce the separatists. “There will be no military intervention,” Lavrov told students at Moscow State Institute of International Relations on Monday, the first day of classes for schools and universities across the country. “We call for an exclusively peaceful settlement of this severe crisis, this tragedy.” He said the priority of the socalled contact group at the talks in Minsk, the Belarusian capital, should be reaching agreement on an immediate, unconditional cease-fire.
The group, which last met in late July, includes representatives of Ukraine, Russia and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. A separatist leader, Andrei Purgin, also was to take part. Purgin told the Interfax news agency that the separatists’ priority was to win recognition of their independence in eastern Ukraine,
which has a large Russian-speaking population. He said they also were willing to discuss the exchange of prisoners and a temporary ceasefire. Fighting in eastern Ukraine between the separatists and the Ukrainian government in Kiev began in mid-April, a month after Russia annexed Ukraine’s southern peninsula of Crimea.
Over the weekend, three people died and hundreds were injured in what amounted to running street battles between the police and the demonstrators. On Monday, protesters and police clashed in various areas of the city’s Red Zone, a sprawling complex of government buildings and grassy lawns in the center of Islamabad. The protesters, armed with clubs and many wearing gas masks, hurled rocks at the policemen. Five police officers, including a senior Islamabad police chief, and three protesters were taken to hospital, bleeding. The protesters made it to a gate that surrounds the prime minister’s residence where they were met by paramilitary Rangers and army troops. They also stormed into the building of the Pakistani state broadcaster, located in another area of the Red Zone, and forced the television briefly off the air. Inside the state TV building, the protesters moved through the corridors with sticks and clubs, smashing equipment as visibly nervous employees looked on. The rallies against Sharif constitute the biggest threat to his government little more than one year in office. Several rounds of negotiations between representatives of Khan and Qadri and the government have failed to make any headway. The two opposition leaders allege widespread fraud in the country’s May 2013 election, in which Sharif’s party won by a landslide. International observers had found no evidence indicating rampant election tampering. The protests began with a march to Islamabad from the eastern city of
Lahore on the country’s Independence Day, Aug. 14. Once in the capital, the protesters camped out near the parliament, pushing their demands. Khan and Qadri had called for millions to join them but crowds at the most numbered tens of thousands early on and at the height of the demonstrations. The rallies initially remained peaceful, though they forced a lockdown of Islamabad and badly harmed the city’s business life. Alibaba’s online and mobile commerce businesses will be controlled by a “variable interest entity,” an arrangement meant to allow investors to buy into Internet and other businesses in which Beijing bans or limits foreign ownership. Used since the 1990s by Internet operators such as Baidu Inc. and Sina Corp., VIEs are based on contracts that say an offshore entity in the Cayman Islands or another corporate haven will control a Chinese company. Foreign shareholders get a stake in that offshore vehicle and profits but no ownership of the Chinese company. “The VIE structure is the only way at present to play this game,” said Paul Gillis, a professor at Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management. “So if you want to invest in restricted sectors of China’s economy, you have to get comfortable with the VIE structure.” Chinese regulators have left the status of VIEs ambiguous. Most operate uneventfully, but courts have rejected contracts if they were deemed to be an attempt to evade ownership curbs. Regulators could shut down VIEs, but “that would be too disruptive,” said Gillis. “They don’t mind the ambiguity because it puts them in a position of strength over the companies to make sure that they comply with government policy.” Such uncertainty is one of a number of risks investors have accepted to gain a stake in China’s economy. Based on data from the Gianyar Government Tourism Office, the county has 20 tourist attractions, where the most is located in Ubud subdistrict having seven tourist attractions, Gianyar subdistrict (4), Tampaksiring (3), Blahbatuh (2), Sukawati (2) and Tegallalang (2). Unfortunately, Payangan subdistrict does not have any tourist destination. Of the 20 tourist attractions, local government of Gianyar only manages seven tourist attractions. Ironically, only Tirta Empul and Goa Gajah become the leading destinations, while others begin to decline in tourist visit, even some attractions are only dropped in by travelers. Gunung Kawi Sebatu tourist attraction in Ubud, for instance, was visited by 41,879 foreign travelers in 2011, but it dropped to 34,352 in 2012 and dropped again in 2013 to 30,350. Meanwhile, up to July 2014 the tourist visit dropped again to 16,847. Similar condition also occurred to Yeh Pulu tourist attraction in Blahbatuh diminishing from 99,920 foreign travelers in 2011, decreased to 8,631 (2012), decreased again to 7,838 (2013) and ultimately until July 2014 only reached 3,798. In the meantime, the Gianyar subdistrict from 2011 to July 2014 was visited by 1,204 foreign travelers (Sidan nature tourism) without the visit of domestic travelers. WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A man suspected of killing two unemployment-office workers and critically injuring a third was taken into custody Monday following a manhunt that lasted seven hours and kept a town on edge. Police spokeswoman Lisa-Marie Brooks said a police dog unit apprehended 48-year-old John Tully near a lake shortly after 5 p.m. following an extensive manhunt in the South Island town of Ashburton. She said Tully would be treated for minor dogbite injuries. She said police were still searching for a weapon used in the shootings and a charging decision would likely be made Tuesday. Earlier, police had urged residents to remain inside their
homes as they searched an area near the town’s river and stormed a house that turned out to be empty. Tully had been interviewed in recent weeks by the local newspaper about his struggles finding somewhere to live and had also written to lawmakers. The incident began about 10 a.m. when police said a man entered a Work and Income New Zealand office and started shooting. A witness said the man was wearing a black balaclava and shot at two women, according to the Ashburton Guardian newspaper. Other witnesses told the paper the man was carrying a shotgun that may have been sawed down and fled on a bicycle. Chief of Bengkel Kawan customary village, and chairman of the Ganesha Kite Festival organizing committee, I Ketut Sutama, said the kite festival was held for fund raising in relation to temple renovation. “Other than for fund raising, the competition was also served as a means to channel the hobby of kite lovers,” he explained. He added the Ganesha Kite Festival this year was the third implementation. The previous festivals were held in 2006 and 2009, “In the future, we do hope the Ganesha Kite Festival can be held every year,” he said. The “GPS stones,” which were engineered to record movement and velocity, were stationed at the southern end of the playa where rocks begin their strange journeys after tumbling down a cliff. At the end of last year, Richard and James Norris returned to inspect the instruments. “We found the playa covered with ice,” Richard recalled to the Times. “We also noticed fresh rock trails near shards of thin ice stacked up along the shoreline.” The following afternoon, “we were sitting on a mountainside and admiring the view when a light wind kicked up and the ice started cracking,” he said. “Suddenly, the whole process unfolded before our eyes.”

DNA shows Arctic group’s isolation lasted 4,000 years WASHINGTON - A long-gone group of ancient people known as Paleo-Eskimos lived in isolation in the North American Arctic for more than 4,000 years, said a study on Thursday. They trekked from Siberia across the Bering Strait to their new home, and made no contact with other cultures who’d made the same journey at different times in history, including Native Americans and the Inuit people. These Paleo-Eskimos eventually disappeared about 700 years ago, around the time when the ancestors of the modern-day Inuit moved eastward from Alaska, researchers said in the US journal Science. “They were, in a sense, sitting ducks and either they were pushed out into the fringes
of the Arctic area where they couldn’t survive economically or else they may simply have been annihilated in some strange way,” said William Fitzhugh, director of the Arctic study center at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Researchers obtained DNA from ancient human bone, teeth and hair samples from Arctic Siberia, Alaska, Canada and Greenland for the study. They also sequenced the genomes of two present-day Greenlandic Inuit, two Siberian Nivkhs, one Aleutian Islander and two Athabascan Native Americans. Mystery of Death Valley’s moving rocks solved Now two researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, have photographed these “sailing rocks” being blown by light winds across the former lake bed. Cousins Richard Norris and James Norris said the movement is made possible when ice sheets that form after rare overnight rains melt in the rising sun, making the hard ground muddy and slick. On Dec. 20, 2013, the cousins catalogued 60 rocks moving across the playa’s pancake-flat surface. “Observed rock movement occurred on sunny, clear days, following nights of sub-freezing temperatures,” they wrote in a report published Wednesday in the online scientific journal PLOS ONE. The conclusion proves theories that have been floated since geologists began studying the moving rocks in the 1940s. The phenomenon doesn’t happen often because it rarely rains in the notoriously hot and dry desert valley. The rocks move about 15 feet (5 meters) per minute, according to the report.

Green turtle found by residents belonged to a rare turtle species that normally lived in sea water.
GIANYAR - If residents of Mas village, Ubud, were once surprised by the finding of crocodile in the river, last Sunday (Aug 31) around 07:00 a.m., residents of Wanayu Mas hamlet, Bedulu village, Blahbatuh, was surprised by the finding of green turtle in the river of Subak Wanayu Mas whereas it is ordinarily living at sea. Approximately the turtle found was 50 years old. It was visible from the large size of green turtle found. It drew the attention of hundreds of residents. Its carapace had the length of 65 cm and width of 64 cm. When found, the turtle condition was quite alarming. People said if the turtle carapace looked mossy, while the existing scales on the carapace seemed unclear. It was first discovered by Wanayu Mas resident, Made Suweta. At that time, he was having a promenade and suddenly saw an object moving in the river. When approached, in fact it was a turtle. He was afraid of seeing something unusual found in the river. The finding of turtle was then notified to surrounding residents. As consequence, hundreds of local residents
were made surprised by the findings of such green turtle. When attracting the attention of local residents, the turtle entered the tunnel of the road. After that, local residents contacted Gusti Putu Ali Sudira, a Wanayu resident who worked in Gianyar Livestock Agency. The turtle was then captured and taken to his home and reported to the office of Bali Natural Resources Agency. The Head of Conservation Section for Region II of the Bali Natural Resources Agency, I Ketut Catur Marbawa, said the green turtle had been rescued and commended in the Bali Safari for observation. When rescued, the turtle was in good health condition, but it only got a minor injury on foot when it was evacuated by residents. According to him, the green turtle found by residents belonged to a rare turtle species that normally lived in sea water. Associated with the presence of the freshwater turtle, in this case he had not got any clear information from residents. “Judging from the age of turtle reaching 50 years, it is not possible for it to live in freshwater for a long time,” he said while adding that he would find out further information about it. BANGLI - Traveling to Bangli County seems incomplete without enjoying loloh cemcem or hog-plum (Spondias pinnata) herbal drink. This typical traditional drink of Bangli is widely encountered at Penglipuran village, indeed denoting the center for the making of hog-plum herbal drink. Nowadays, this drink has been widely marketed to other regions and often becomes favorite drink in some culinary booths in the Bali Arts Festival (BAF). It is prepared with a very simple process. Even, the ingredients are widely available as they are used to make natural fence by residents of Penglipuran. In Balinese language, it is known as loloh. If herbal drink has been imagined to have a bitter and unpleasant taste, the hog-plum herbal drink has a very refreshing taste in throat. So far, it is commonly served as a complementary drink while eating Balinese food. One of the hog-plum herbal drink makers, Mom Nyampuh, said the making process of this herbal drink was very simple. Main ingredient of the herbal drink was hog-plum leaf growing in the home yard of local residents. Having been finely washed, the leaf had to be crushed or pulverized. Then, it was added with warm water as needed.
Since the leaf tended to have sour taste, it should be added with palm sugar to give sweet taste during the preparation. Besides, it needed to be added with grated young coconut to give fresh sensation. Additional ingredients added to the preparation of this herbal drink caused it to have a variety of flavors. In the past, this herbal drink was often mixed with fried peanuts. According to Mom Nyampuh, although the herbal drink was totally made from natural ingredients, it could last long enough, moreover if it was chilled in refrigerator. “If this herbal drink is kept in refrigerator, it can hold for three days. Oth-
erwise, it can just hold for whole day,” she said. Since it was in high demand, the herbal drink used to quench thirst was admitted to have a promising business prospect. Not a few people of Penglipuran had deeply involved in the making of this herbal drink and sold it to the market. “I have been selling this kind of herbal drink for 18 years,” she added. Condition of quarry at risk of being unable to be restored

AMLAPURA - Up to these days, the reclamation funds for quarry area in Karangasem have not been used. The funds intended to restore the condition after the mining activities stay to settle because no entrepreneurs have been willing to carry out the reclamation since 2000. As a result, the environmental damage caused by
the quarry is at risk of being unable to be restored. In accordance with Regulation of Karangasem Regent No. 14/2008 on the quarry reclamation warranty deposit, every entrepreneur carrying out a quarry activity is imposed with reclamation warranty fund worth about IDR 50 million. This limited amount of fees is charged for every one hectare of quarry area.
Unfortunately from 2000 to 2014, no entrepreneur wanted to use the funds to restore the quarry area. When asked for his confirmation about the reclamation fund, the Head of Economic Affairs of the Karangasem government, I Wayan Mindra, revealed the reclamation funds deposited to the government had not been used so far for the reclamation of the quarry area.
According to him, many businessmen claimed the fund worth IDR 50 million was not enough to do reclamation for the area of one hectare. “Reclamation fund worth IDR 50 million was just enacted in 2010. Previously, the reclamation fund was approximately IDR 2.5 million. The government admitted to face difficulty to make reclamation with such amount of fund,” he said.
Besides, the obligation to perform reclamation lay in the entrepreneurs that had owned a mining permit. In terms of the reclamation fund collected amounting to IDR 1.5 billion, the government was not able to perform the reclamation by using the existing fund. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Jennifer Aniston on being a ‘badass’ after ‘Friends’ After playing sitcom sweetheart Rachel Green in longrunning television comedy “Friends” for 10 years, Jennifer Aniston has spent the last decade looking for roles where she can “kick some ass.” In “Life of Crime,” out in U.S. theaters on Friday, Aniston taps into a 1970s Detroit trophy wife and socialite, Mickey Dawson, who finds herself held for ransom while her cheating husband debates whether to pay for her release. Aniston, 45, talked to Reuters about the excitement of being in a caper comedy, playing strong female characters and the “Friends” phenomenon 10 years after it concluded its run. Q: What resonated with you about the character of Mickey? A: It was such fun, as any Elmore Leonardadapted screenplay you would imagine would be, and her character’s arc was so awesome. Q: How did you connect with her initial passiveness at her crumbling marriage? A: I was a kid in the seventies, and women were stuck in unhappy situations that they didn’t know how to get out of, not like today where if something smells even a little bit bad, it’s like ‘I’m high-tailing it out of here.’ So I really loved how her character was written and she was actually a badass. Q: How did you interpret Mickey’s eventual connection to Louis (played by John Hawkes), who kidnapped her? A: Oh my lord, he was saving her, he was her savior in an odd, twisted way. And I think she could feel that, even under the mask, she could feel that, and it’s sort of this odd couple relationship that forms, and I think it’s quite lovely. Q: What type of women have you found yourself drawn to after playing Rachel on “Friends” for 10 years? A: Women usually who have a really positive arc and become stronger at the end of it, coming out from underneath cir-
cumstances that just seem unsurvivable, and the fact that you actually get through it and survive and get stronger and kick some ass. I like that. I can’t say (“Horrible Bosses” character) Doctor Julia’s that, she doesn’t deserve it. Q: The 20th anniversary of “Friends”’ premiere is coming up. A: Didn’t that already happen? Q: September 2014 is 20 years after ... A: The first time it aired? I thought it was last year. Oh good, I’m a year younger! I just saved a year, so great. Q: How to you still reflect on the show and its fans? A: I love how it sort of keeps on, it’s like the little Energizer bunny, it just keeps on ticking, it’s amazing. It transcends, I don’t know what it is about it, but it makes me very happy. I love it even when it comes on. Q: Do you miss Rachel? A: I get her everyday in my house. I don’t have to miss her, she’s everywhere! (laughs)

GIANYAR - Foreign workers who work in the area of Gianyar County are required to pay a monthly fee at USD 100 effective Monday (Sep 1). This policy relates to the enactment of the Law No. 8/2014 dated July 14, 2014 regarding the levies of the extension of Foreign Worker Employment Permit (IMTA). As a major tourist destination in Bali, Gianyar has accommodation facilities becoming the center of tourism and handicraft production worth exporting that stimulates the Gianyar employers to hire foreign workers in order to win competition. This potential provides a great opportunity to increase the region-
ally generated revenue (PAD). All this time, the extension of Foreign Worker Employment Permit was paid to central government. However, through the regulation, Gianyar County had a chance to take it over. Moreover, the Government Regulation No.97/2012 has mandated the local government to
create a legal instrument for the levy collection of the extension of Foreign Worker Employment Permit. Until the end of August 2014, a total of 67 foreign workers had been registered in the area of Gianyar County. They represent the data of central government whose levy collection of the Foreign Worker Employment Permit has now been bestowed. Of the 67 workers, 23 people have extended the permit of previous year. Additional Foreign Worker Employment Permit from the Minister of Manpower in 2013 came to 21
workers and up to June 2014 it increased to 23 workers. “This potential will continue to grow after the issuance of new permit until the end of December 2014 and the results of the ongoing data collection,” said the Head of Gianyar Manpower and Settlement Agency, Gede Widarma Suharta. Extension tariff of the Foreign Worker Employment Permit as much as USD 100 per person per month was remitted to the Regional Treasury via the Treasury Receipt at the Gianyar Manpower and Settlement Agency or through a bank specified for the extension
of permit expired on August 31, 2014 and so on. “This registration is made by the foreign worker users in Gianyar,” he said. Amidst the existence of numerous tourism companies, there was possibility if some foreign workers have not been registered yet. Against this condition, Widarma said that his party would conduct an inspection next month to several companies so as to know in person the foreigners working in the company existing in Gianyar County, but had not been registered or had the Foreign Worker Employment Permit, he explained.
