After a sarcophagus was found in Dharmagiri area in Bitera, Gianyar, few days ago, the residents of Kembangan in Tulikup, also in Gianyar, was also found similar thing. They found a sarcophagus which is predicted to be thousand years old. However, the sarcophagus found in Kembangan has different pattern with the other sarcophagus found in other areas in Gianyar regency. The newly found sarcophagus is approximately 96 centimeters high and 70 centimeters wide. On the end of the sarcophagus, there is a facial shape so it is predicted that the people who created the sarcophagus had known carving art. Denpasar archeological department will conduct a dig on September 6th 2010 in order to investigate the finding thoroughly.
The sarcophagus was found during the land dig for brick materials. It is located on the yard of Gusti Nyoman Dirya in Kembengan, Tulikup village. It was found on Monday, August 30th 2010 when Dirya was digging soil. He was hitting a hard object and then found the sarcophagus. Dirya directly reported the finding to Gianyar police department and the officers placed police line on the area. Dirya said that the finding is the second one after in 1998, approximately 6 meters from the current area, a sarcophagus was found. It was a bit bigger than the current one and after the researchers opened the sarcophagus, there was bones and there was no other objects.(kmb16)

Assertion committed by the office of Denpasar civilian security guards (Trantib) and public order agency (Satpol PP) toward unlicensed businesses, in fact, has not shown significant influence to the operation of illegal businesses. It was proven by one of the mini markets located on Jalan Pulau Moyo, Denpasar, namely Alfamidi that had no permit yet. Ironically, though having no permission, the management was determined to make a grand opening last Tuesday (Aug 31). However, the splendor of grand opening ambience did not last longer. Because, a joint team of Denpasar Municipality consisting of Tramtib Office, City Planning and Housing Services, Sanitation and Landscaping Services, as well as the Environmental Agency made a raid to the location. Since it had no permit, the Tramtib Office then sealed the mini market that had just completed its grand opening last Tuesday. Technical Implementer of Trantib and Satpol PP Office of Denpasar, I Ketut Nick Natha Wibawa in the midst of the raid last Tuesday said the sealing was carried out after the owner of mini market signed an agreement on August 23 stating that his party would not open the mini market before having a permit. Suddenly the operator organized its grand opening last Tuesday, so
the Trantib Office took affirmative action to seal the mini market. Before sealing the mini market, the joint team commenced their raid to Alfamidi located on Jalan Hayam Wuruk. At this location, the business did not have a building permit, either. As consequence, the owner of mini market was given a summons. “This building has not had building permit (IMB) yet,” said the Head of Denpasar City Planning and Housing Services (DTRP), Kadek Kusuma Diputra, last Tuesday. Tramtib Office also provided a second reprimand letter for the business’ owner. The mini market was requested not to operate before the owner could complete the permit requirements. “Reprimand letter given to the owner of Alfamidi on Jalan Hayam Wuruk is the second time. Previously our party has issued a prior warning in order it would not
operate before having permits,” said Nick Natha Wibawa. After committing the raid to both mini markets the joint team resumed their passage to heavy equipment rentals, workshops and a slum house complex situated on the same location on Jalan Bypass Prof. Mantra. In the raid, the team could encounter the supply of sea sand that allegedly had been taken from Sanur Beach. “This sand was taken from the project of Regent Hotel in Sanur,” said one of the employees of PT Tri Daya Sarana, a rental company of heavy equipment. On hearing such statement, the Head of Denpasar Environmental Agency, A.A. Bagus Sudarsana, directly instructed to terminate the taking of sea sand from Sanur Beach. “Why did you take the sand, it was deliberately kept there by government?” questioned A.A. Sudarsana. It is said the fight happened during Monday (30/8) at 2.30 am wita. Victim and his girlfriend came to the place at Legian Street, Kuta at 1 am wita. They were entertaining themselves, having drinks accompanied by music. They were sitting in a sofa on the north of the hall. They ordered drinks and workers

A total of eight farmers (out of nine farmers) from the village of Taro, districtTegallalang, Gianyar whose apprenticeship to Australia was canceled, on June 9, 2009, Tuesday, (31 / 8) yesterday went to the Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) in Gianyar regency. They complain about the cancellation of the apprenticeship to Australia by Office of Agriculture Gianyar. The farmers who became victims of the cancellation were received by deputy chairman of parliament, Made Togog and Ketut Djata, as well as commissions B and Commission D of the DPRD of Gianyar. Farmers were complaining to the Parliament of which, I Made Andika Wikama, I Wayan sarwa, I Nyoman Sadia, I Made Mudita Astawa, I Made Kariana, Made Suteja, Made Merta and I Gede Mustika Ariasa were residing. From the farmers’ revelation, Andika Wikama mentions that initially Australian Apprenticeship information to be obtained from district Agricultural Service Gianyar. However, the management and departure were to be done by an agent named Putu Agus Arya, including district KTNA Gianyar, Wayan Rio. Foreign Tourists Visits Increased 13,49 Percent Jakarta (Bali Post) –
Foreign tourists who have visited Indonesia in the period of January to July 2010 reached 4,039 million. “The number of foreign tourists who came to Indonesia until July 2010 have increased 13,49 percent compared to the same period last year,” ASEAN Deputy Director in Tourism and Culture Agency, Chrismiastutie, in Jakarta last Tuesday (31/8). It was mentioned, this increase is significant with the era of the healed global crisis where it is noted it increased from 3.558.887 foreign tourists last year’s same period. Chris added, the most contributors are Malaysian, 648.865 people which increased around 17,07 from last year. Singapore is the second contributor with 641.553 people or
an increase of 6,54 percent, “For next year we are still going to promote the tourism very much to Malaysia and Singapore.” According to Chris, the two countries will still be the tourism market focus where more than a million foreign tourists come from there year to year. Chris and the Agency will held promotions including sales mission, table top that will meet Indonesian tourism businesses with Malaysian/ Singaporean, and follow the tourism bursa of those two countries, “An effort to keep the two focuses on that market.” For next year, the Agency will target 1,5 million foreigner tourists from Malaysia and 1,2 million from Singapore. Bank Indonesia (BI) of Denpasar Branch was thronged by community wanting to exchange a small denomination of money before the Idul Fitri celebration. From the morning, thousands of Muslims were seen to have been lining up at the grandiose building owned by Bank Indonesia so they could exchange some small denominations. Chairman of BI Denpasar, Jeffery Kairupan, explained such a condition usually took place before religious holidays such as in the Idul Fitri celebration of this year. “We already received daily instruction from the central office to provide whatever required by community. Currently, the cash stock of small denomination is very adequate,” said Jeffery Kairupan in Denpasar, last Tues-
day (Aug 31). Related to the distribution of cash in small denomination, the former Chairman of BI Manado explained that the exchange was executed through three main points namely at the office of Bank Indonesia, appointed 12 rural banks (BPR) and through the markets. Hungry flood-hit Pakistanis protest lack of help AFP
THATTA, Pakistan – Hundreds of hungry families blocked a highway in Pakistan’s flood-hit south on Wednesday, demanding the government provide more food as the UN warned of a “triple threat” to desperate survivors. Up to 500 people from a government-run relief camp in Thatta city, in the worst-hit province of Sindh, blocked the main road between Karachi city and Thatta for three hours calling for the state to provide food and shelter. “No food or water has been provided to us for the past two days,” Mohammad Qasim, a 60-year-old resident of the flooded town of Sujawal, told AFP. The World Food Programme issued a stark warning of the threat to food supplies after a month of catastrophic flooding that has affected 18 million people, as the deluge flows south on its way to the Arabian Sea. Pakistan’s government — widely painted as corrupt and bogged down in red tape and infighting — has been derided in domestic media over its response to the floods and has been the fo-
cus of angry isolated protests by the affected. While the international community has now donated 700 million dollars, domestic anger has been mounting at the civilian government, which has staggered from crisis to crisis in the 30 months since its election. “There is a triple threat unfolding as this crisis widens and deepens,” World Food Programme chief Josette Sheeran said at a press conference in Islamabad on Tuesday, after visiting flooded areas. The triple threat was people’s loss of seeds, crops and incomes, “leaving them vulnerable to hunger, homelessness and desperation — the situation is extremely critical”, she said. Devastation to farmland and transport links mean that food prices have rocketed, fanning frustration among the masses already struggling to make ends meet in Pakistan’s shaky economy. In televised comments Wednesday, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani told his cabinet that the flooding had “devastated the infrastructure on a large scale and the government is trying to cope with the crisis”.

LONDON – Former British prime minister Tony Blair said he was “desperately sorry” for deaths in the Iraq war but insisted the controversial 2003 invasion was right in his memoirs published Wednesday. Entitled “A Journey”, the book is Blair’s account of his decade in Downing Street from 1997 to 2007 and also features an unprecedented, stinging attack on his successor Gordon Brown, whose premiership he brands a disaster. However, it is Iraq — arguably the defining event of Blair’s decade in power — which is at the book’s heart. Blair said he was “desperately sorry” over casualties on all sides — British soldiers, their allies, Iraqi civilians, diplomats and casualties such as murdered hostages — and suggested he had shed tears over the loss of life. But he insisted that he “can’t regret the decision to go to war” as he again
outlined the case for the conflict. “All I know is that I did what I thought was right,” Blair wrote. “I stood by America when it needed standing by. Together we rid the world of a tyrant. Together we fought to uphold the Iraqis’ right to a democratic government.” Blair did, though, acknowledge that the aftermath of the invasion was far worse than anticipated. “The aftermath was more bloody, more awful, more terrifying than anyone could have imagined,” he said. “I can say that never did I guess the nightmare that unfolded, and that too is part of the responsibility.” He praised the “genuine integrity” and “political courage” of the

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Aussie mom jailed 27 years for killing two sons MELBOURNE, Australia – An Australian mother twice convicted of killing her two young sons was sentenced to 27 years in prison on Wednesday for what the judge called “the greatest act of betrayal.” Donna Fitchett was first convicted in 2008 of murdering her sons in 2005 and sentenced to 24 years prison. She appealed her conviction and was granted a retrial in May, but a jury again found her guilty after she admit-
ted drugging her sons and then strangling one and smothering the other. The boys were 11 and 9 years old. “You were their mother. Your responsibility was to nurture, care for, love and protect them and over the years you did that,” Justice Elizabeth Curtain said in sentencing Fitchett. “But in the greatest act of betrayal and in a profound breach of (trust) you robbed each of them of their precious lives ... in an act of unfathomable
selfishness.” Fitchett claimed she was not guilty by reason of mental impairment but Curtain called the murder premeditated, citing a letter Fitchett had written before the murders. No details on the letter were released, and a motive was not given during the trial. Fitchett’s lawyer, Patrick Tehan, told the court that the mother was depressed and suicidal when she killed her children.

JAKARTA - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono promised Tuesday to replace the country’s much-maligned chiefs of police and prosecutors but denied the reshuffle was linked to corruption and incompetence. His comments to cabinet ministers came as a businessman was sentenced to four years in jail for attempting to bribe anti-graft investigators with the alleged backing of top police and prosecutors. The case shocked the nation when it broke last year but it was far from an isolated incident, with reports of alleged judicial graft and misconduct filling the pages of the local newspapers on a daily basis.
Yudhoyono said the law enforcement agencies needed to be professional and “fair”, and called for any official found to be involved in wrongdoing to be punished. “If any police members or prosecutors are involved in any violations, measures should be taken against them according to the law with transparency and high accountability,” he said. National police chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri and Attorney General Hendarman Supandji would be replaced along with the head of the armed forces as part of a scheduled reshuffle, he said. “These officials will end their terms in line with the existing law,” he said, adding that he was “not pleased” by suggestions the changes

Corruption Eradication Commission officials confiscated documents during the raid Tuesday in Jakarta, local media said. Investigators are examining allegations of corruption surrounding the import of used railway coaches which were donated to Indonesia by the Japanese government.
“We want to obtain a detailed view of the shipping process for the carriages in 2006,” commission spokesman Johan Budi was quoted as saying by The Jakarta Globe. Officials were not immediately available to independently confirm the raid. The commission questioned Sumitomo executive Hideyuki Nishio earlier this year as part of the ongoing probe into allegations that the coaches’ import costs were deliberately inflated. DENPASAR - Bali has earmarked Rp66 billion in its budget to reforest fallow and critical land everywhere in the province over the next fives years, a local forestry official said. “We will replant deforested and critical land covering a total area of 25,346 hectares scattered in various districts and cities in stages over a period of five years,” Ida Agung Buana, head of Bali’s forestry service, said here Tuesday. The annual reforestation target was a minimum of 5,000 hectares per year with the replanting process to tak place inside or outside protected or village forests. He said for the private and individual sectors, the local government had set up free seedling distribution centers. Companies or individuals who have land they wish to reforest can obtain tree seedlings free of charge from the centers. He said the government had set up seedling distribution centers in eastern, southern, northern and central Bali. Denpasar – Bali is targeting for 10,000 through 16,000 foreign tourists a year in 2010. This is similar to the number of tourists visited Singapore each year. I Ketut Wija, the second Assistant of Economic division in Bali Government, said “we want to imitate the positive thing about Singapore. They can maintain the security condition so they can attract tourists to visit the country.” Foreign tourists will visit the country if they feel hat they are safe and comfortable in the country. “It is not surprising that Singapore is visited by many tourists every year, it is because they can maintain their security level,” Wija said. Spiritual Farming: From One Green to Some other Greens

Advancement of science of technology does not answer all problems encountered by human life. In agriculture, for instance, modern farmers can now have boosted the quantity of production, even in multiple amounts. On the one had, it’s a great success but on the other hand it still leaves a problem on the decline of environmental and human health quality. Green revolution occurred between 1943 and 1970s through the implementation of chemical fertilizer and good irrigation system has conjured up the rice production. In short term, it became an efficacious medicine to resolve the famine in tropical countries. Few decades later, it had an impact on the reduction of environmental quality, like pollution in water, land and others. Apart from the impact on the environment, it was also had an impact on human health like the rise of some new cancers. Realizing these facts, now Bali has an initiative to become a green province and implement the integrated farming system (Simantri). Hopefully, implementation of the system could realize the Bali Organic plan and consequently minimize the environmental destruction. Green province campaign includes some aspects, namely green culture, green economy and Bali green and clean. Green culture is intended to change the societal behavior in managing their waste manage-
ment and environment. Green economy hints that all economic activities should be in the eco-friendly orientation. These two aspects will empty out into the initiative of Bali Organic. One of the aspects is applied in the agricultural field. Socialization has been intensified while establishing farmer groups. Through breeding local cows, for instance, farmers are expected to get maximal benefits. Other than increasing the number of cows, they will be able to take advantage the cow dung and urine for organic fertilizers. In the long run, it will reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Of course, this endeavor will reduce the production cost that should be spent by farmers and at the same time increase the quality of rice as well as improve the environmental quality. As a matter of fact, simple practice of this concept could have been seen around 1970s. Farmers using cows to cultivate their land could also take advantage of their cow dung. It was spread out onto the rice field and its
efficacy could last for at least for two planting seasons. In terraced rice field, it could uniquely be managed by establishing a cowshed in the upper stream. Later on, the collected dry cow dung was channeled to rice field through the water gutter. However, since being urged by the demand to multiple the rice production, farmers left the method. Introduction of hand tractor and chemical fertilizers gradually replaced the role of cows. The new method was expected to accelerate the land cultivation process. As consequence, cows were only serving as ‘family saving’ for farmers. Simple eco-friendly pest control actually has been proposed in the palmleaf manuscript entitled “Shri Tattwa or Darmaning Pemaculan.” It has been applied by subak community in Bali from generation to generation until today. However, it seems to put more emphasis on the ritual aspect only, while herbal pesticide or other means of the oblation is only applied symbolically.

BUSINESS Fed officials discussed further stimulus steps Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - Federal Reserve officials signaled at their August meeting that they would consider going beyond a modest program to purchase government debt if necessary to boost the economy. Minutes of the Fed’s discussions from the Aug. 10 meeting show the central bank recognized that the economy could need further stimulus beyond the debt purchases. Those are intended to lower interest rates on a range of consumer and business loans. The minutes, which were released Tuesday, did not spell out what new steps might be taken. But they do indicate that the officials focused attention on the modest move the Fed did take at the meeting, which would invest the proceeds from its huge mortgage bond portfolio in Treasury securities. Some Fed officials argued that reinvesting proceeds from the Fed’s holdings of mortgage securities “could send an inappropriate signal to investors about the committee’s readiness to resume large-scale asset purchases,” the minutes said. One member objected and said making the change could complicate the Fed’s eventual exit from its period of aggressive credit easing, which began more than two years ago as the country plunged into a deep recession. The minutes are not verbatim and do not identify speakers but analysts said they provided an indication that the central bank engaged in an extensive debate over the issue before agreeing to provide nearly unanimous support for Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. In the end, the Federal Open Market Committee, the panel of Fed board members and regional bank presidents who set interest rates, voted 9-1 to support the modest easing move. The only dissent came from Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank President Thomas Hoenig. Fed policymakers took the step at a time when economic growth is slowing and many are concerned the country could slip back into a recession. Release of the minutes, in which Fed officials expressed increased concern about the economy’s slowdown, contributed to a lackluster day on Wall Street with the Dow Jones industrial average closing up just 5 points. After the recession began in December 2007, the Fed tripled its balance sheet to help bolster economic growth and steady the housing market. In addition to buying Treasury debt, it purchased $1.25 trillion in mortgagebacked securities. For most of this year the central bank had discussed exiting the program.
But at the August Fed meeting, the central bank said it would use the proceeds from the mortgage program to purchase Treasury bonds. The goal would be to keep its total holdings of securities at around $2.05 trillion. The minutes said that the committee believed that the most likely outcome for the economy was that it would continue to grow and would avoid a destabilizing bout of deflation — when prices and wages decline. But the panel said it was prepared to go further to guard against either a return to recession or deflation. The minutes said the Fed panel agreed it would “need to consider steps it could take to provide additional policy stimulus tools if the outlook were to weaken appreciably further.” Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, said it was significant that the minutes showed Fed officials were willing to consider various steps to bolster growth. Zandi said the Fed could begin significantly expanding its balance sheet by buying large amounts of Treasury securities if the unemployment rate begins to rise on a sustained basis. The jobless rate stood at 9.5 percent in July with the government scheduled to release the August report on Friday. However, other economists said they did not believe the central bank was close to resuming a large-scale effort to buy securities. They predicted that the central bank will keep its target for overnight bank loans at zero to 0.25 percent, where it has been since December 2008. But it will not launch other major credit easing efforts unless the economy weakens significantly. “The Fed doesn’t believe we will have a double-dip recession. But if there is a significant deterioration in the economy, then all bets are off and they will act more aggressively,” said David Jones, head of DMJ Advisors, a Denver-based economic consulting firm. The minutes showed the discussions on Aug. 10 lasted for more than five hours. Many analysts said the amount of time spent on a relatively modest change showed the central bank is not close to approving a largescale operation. “The Fed will only restart its asset purchases if economic conditions deteriorate markedly from where we are now,” said Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics. Bernanke discussed a range of options that could be employed at a Fed conference Friday in Wyoming, including resumption of large-scale purchases of Treasury securities. In that speech, Bernanke said he believed that the economy would continue to grow modestly in the second half of this year and then rebound to stronger growth in 2011.

LOS ANGELES – George Clooney, Will Smith and Gwyneth Paltrow will join an impressive list of stars taking part in September’s “Stand Up to Cancer” telethon airing on major networks. Other celebrities announced Wednesday include Denzel Washington, Renee Zellweger, Kathy Bates and Richard Branson. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Lance Armstrong and Elizabeth Edwards were previously announced as participants. SEOUL - South Korea’s most prestigious film festival said Wednesday it has chosen Taiwanese director Tsai Ming Liang as its Asian Filmmaker of the Year. The Pusan International Film Festival praised Tsai’s work over the past three decades for pioneering unexplored areas that overcome the limitations of the art film industry. “His 30-year-long devotion to filmmaking has greatly influenced Asian cinema and made considerable contributions to enhance the global status of Asian cinema,” it said in a statement. “He is renowned for seeking fresh ways of communicating with his audience... We can find the root of his
endless spirit of challenging himself and the borderlines of art in his earlier works in the 1990s.” Malaysianborn Tsai is best known for “Vive L’Amour” that won the Golden Lion (best picture) award at the Venice Film Festival in 1994, and “The River” that won the Silver Bear/Special Jury Prize at the 1997 Berlin International Film Festival. The 52-year-old has also won numerous awards with other films. NEW YORK – Michael Douglas says he faces an “eight-week struggle” against throat cancer but is optimistic about his chances for recovery. During an appearance Tuesday on David Letterman’s “Late Show,” the actor said he had just finished his first week of radiation and chemotherapy. That drew a surprised reaction from Letterman. “You’ve never looked better to me, and this proves that you’re a tough guy, for God’s sakes,” the talk-show host said, drawing cheers from the studio audience, according to a CBS news release. “Let’s just say ... I’m pretty lit up right now,” Douglas replied. The dis-
ease was diagnosed three weeks ago, he said, although he had complained of a very sore throat earlier this year and had undergone testing that failed to find a cause. Douglas, 65, who has two children with Catherine Zeta-Jones, said he enjoyed the summer traveling with his family before returning to the doctor. A biopsy found he had late, stage-four cancer, “which is intense, and so they’ve had to go at it,” he said. However, Douglas said, the cancer remains above the neck and that means expectations are good, with an 80 percent or better chance of recovery. CEREVIC – A little over two years ago Ljuba Simic packed in his job driving trucks for a local cement factory for a new life — as a pioneer of rural tourism in Serbia’s lush Fruska Gora region. “I told myself it would be good to profit from what we have: the Danube river, the Fruska Gora hills and their pristine nature,” the dynamic 51-year old told AFP. Together with a business partner he turned a traditional Vojvodina farmhouse into a rural inn in the picturesque village of Cerevic, on the north side of Fruska Gora where the hills meet the banks of the Danube. With tourism heavyweights Croatia and Montenegro and their sun-kissed Adriatic coast just next door, landlocked Serbia is bidding to turn its vast, unspoilt countryside into an asset for green tourism. The industry is still a fledgling: last year revenues from tourism made up barely 2.5 percent of Serbia’s gross domestic product, according to the economy ministry. But spurred on by the success of countries like Hungary, Bulgaria or Romania, Serbia has high hopes for the sector, and its trade and tourism ministry aims to establish a viable market for nature tourism by 2015. Guests staying at Simic’s inn, which opened in 2008 with 40 beds, can go hiking, visit the area’s famous Orthodox monasteries, take a boat trip on the river or simply relax with a drink in the farmhouse’s calm gar-
dens. Octogenarian Ratko Tatalovic came to Cerevic to beat the summer heat in Serbia’s capital Belgrade. “The beauty of our country deserves to be highlighted, and this kind of tourism is an excellent way to do it,” he said. Jagoda Jovicevic, of the government’s tourism organisation TOS, says “the state is actively supporting the development of rural tourism and has been giving subsidies and loans with favourable conditions for four years now.” She says the country is managing to transform its lack of industrial development into an economic advantage. “We are turning something around that used to be considered a failing.” Simic is now one of around 4,000 people working in the growing sector, which so far counts some 5,000 tourist beds. “I can’t think straight, only feel, feel and feel this emotion,” a sobbing, nearly speechless Tokyo-born Chizuko Kuwamoto said after winning the competition. She and her partner Diego Ortega live in the Japanese capital, where they competed in last year’s Mundial de Tango but lost. This year, they decided to represent his home town of Colon in the contest. The couple this time beat their Japanese rivals Kyoko and Hiroshi Yamao, title holders since 2009. In the closing ceremony of the eighth tango danceoff, thousands of people watched all the dancers participate in a final spectacle, hosted by Panamanian singercomposer and sometime actor Ruben Blades. “Salsa (music) and the tango both spin an urban tale of music that transcends borders and nationalities,” Blades told the crowd. Twenty-two couples reached the finals, including three from Japan, five from Colombia and one each from South Korea, Chile and Venezuela. The tango in 2009 was declared part of the world’s cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

BEIJING - Cellphone customers in China must provide identification from Wednesday to purchase a new number, state media said — the latest step by Beijing to tighten curbs over the world’s largest mobile market. The new regulations also apply to foreigners and those wishing to purchase a pre-paid SIM card, the China Daily and Global Times reported, citing sources at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Those with existing mobile subscriptions will be asked to register with their carriers before 2013, or their plans could be cancelled, the Global Times said, citing MIIT official Chen Jinqiao. Street newspaper stands will be banned from selling SIM cards until the owners are trained on how to register customers, the reports said. The new rules are part of the government’s efforts to prevent spam, pornographic messages and rampant fraud through the country’s vast mobile network, MIIT spokesman Wang Lijian told the China Daily. Officials at the ministry declined immediate comment. The government planned to carry out nationwide registration of mobile phone users as early as 2006, but the plan did not come to fruition as telecoms operators and users showed little interest, the report said. China had 814 million mobile phone users at the end of July, official data showed. But as many as 320 million users have not provided identification, Chen told the China Daily. A report issued by a governmentlinked body in April said about 75 percent of China’s roughly 200 million web users under the age of 25 use their mobile phones to access the Internet. Beijing blocks access to any web content that the government deems unacceptable, ranging from pornography to political dissent, under a vast system of censorship known as the “Great Firewall of China”.

Their World Cup triumph in South Africa enabled Vicente del Bosque’s side to emulate West Germany (1974) and France (2000) as the only national teams to have held both European and world titles at the same time. The challenge now confronting La Roja is to carry that dominance into uncharted terrain by successfully defending the European crown they won in Austria and Switzerland in 2008. Worryingly for Spain’s adversaries, the average age of the World Cup-winning squad was a sprightly 25.9 and Villarreal midfielder Santi Cazorla was the only new face in the group named to face Liechtenstein in their first qualifying match on Friday. “We cannot afford to under-esti-
mate anyone. ROME - Brazilian star Robinho signed for Serie A giants AC Milan on Tuesday on a four-year contract for 18million euros from English Premier League side Manchester City where he had an unhappy two year spell. “We paid 18million euros plus bonuses,” said club director Adriano Galliani. The 26-year-old was a shock signing two years ago by City for 32.5million pounds but fell out of favour soon after Roberto Mancini took over as manager last season. He was loaned out to Brazilian side Santos last January, but the Brazilian club were unable to come up with the money to make it a permanent transfer. “I am really happy to be here,” said Robinho, who won two league titles while at Real Madrid prior to his move to Manchester City where he scored 14 goals in 41 appearances for the English side. “I am delighted to have been given this opportunity and I want to prove my worth. “My ambition is to play well and to help Milan regain the scudetto (the title),” added Robinho, who was a much sought after target of Milan president Silvio Berlusconi. ANKARA - China suffered another disappointing day at the World Basketball Championships on Tuesday, letting go of an early lead to fall 84-76 to Puerto Rico. The loss in Ankara sees China languishing at the bottom of group C and in serious danger of missing out on the round of 16. The Chinese need to beat either Greece or Russia in their remaining games, neither of which appears to be easy assignment. The game began well enough for the Chinese with Shipeng Wang and Jianlian Yi combining for their team’s first 17 points for a comfortable 17-7 lead. But this was as good as it would get for the Chinese for the remainder of the half with Angel Vassallo (22 points) leading his team on a scoring romp, turning the 10 point deficit into an 8 point 44-37 advantage for Puerto Rico when the halftime hooter sounded.
The recess appeared just what the Chinese needed with whatever coach Bob Donwald Junior said at halftime appearing to work, at least temporarily. China quickly closed the gap, again grabbing the lead at 45-44 with just over six minutes remaining, only to fall victim to their previous errors with too many rebounds going astray and too many easy turnovers given away. Trailing 63-57 at the start of the final period, the weight of the team fell on the shoulders of Yi, with China needing him to produce big points if they were to have any chance of coming back. Webber: Spa ‘changed the landscape’ of F1 title battle Following a race in which three of his key title rivals failed to score and he and McLaren-Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton mounted the leading two steps on the podium, Mark Webber has reflected that last weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps ‘changed the landscape’ of the F1 2010 World Championship battle. When the starting lights went out in the Ardennes, Webber initially looked to have blown his pole position advantage with what he admitted was an ‘appalling’ getaway that briefly dropped him as low as seventh place – ‘my dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree and cars streamed past me,’ he recalled – but a combination of determination and sensible driving in the tricky climatic conditions enabled the Australian to recover to a fine runner-up finish at the chequered flag, as he kept his head whilst others lost theirs and in so doing kept his hopes of clinching the coveted crown this season firmly intact. Hamilton’s sublime victory might have cost Webber his erstwhile world championship lead, but the 34-year-old remains very much in touch at just three points adrift of his British adversary and, perhaps even more crucially, 28 points ahead of Red Bull Racing teammate Sebastian Vettel – who calamitously crashed his own chances away on Sunday when he collided with Jenson Button – 32 ahead of
Button and 38 clear of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.
