NEW YORK — Should headphones made out of recycled trash ever cost $349? It depends on how cool they are. In hopes of giving products made from recycled materials a little more cachet, musician will.i.am and The Coca-Cola Co. are partnering to make a line of clothing and gear called Ekocycle. The idea is to brand recycled products with a hipper image that resonates with young consumers. “If you think about (recycled) products now, none of them are cool,” said will.i.am, who is best known for his work with The Black-Eyed Peas. “You have to bring some art and fashion sensibility into this technology that turns a bottle into something cool.” The first Ekocycle product will be a pair of headphones by Beats, a popular and pricey line created by rapper Dr. Dre and music producer Jimmy Iovine — both friends of will.i.am. The Ekocycle version will cost $349, which is on the high end of the range of Beats headphones. An Ekocycle hat by New Era will cost $32. The plan is to partner with a variety of other big-name designers to sell items including bicycles, shoes, handbags, glasses or even high-end chairs and tables. Rowling webcast will promote new Potter kids club NEW YORK — J.K. Rowling’s next book is for adults, but she will be on hand this fall to help promote a new club for kids, the Harry Potter Reading Club. Scholastic Inc. announced Tuesday that Rowling will participate in a live webcast at noon on Oct. 11 from her hometown of Edinburgh, Scotland, taking pre-submitted questions from her young fans. The discussion will take place on scholastic.com/ hpreadingclub, the website for an online Potter club launched Tuesday by Scholastic. The club is designed for schools and libraries and parents. It will include discussion guides, a glossary, interactive features and information on community events. Rowling will contribute original commentary. She has a novel for grown-ups out in September called “The Casual Vacancy.”

Along with other officials, the Vice Governor participated in dismantling the bamboo house of Karti located at Pendem hamlet, Pendem subdistrict, Jembrana.

Furthermore, the plaited bamboowalled house occupied by Karti would be refurbished with a value of IDR 20 million. Karti is a portrait of poor household at Pendem village who has been living in the house for decades. Since he does not have any money, the slender-bodied but diligent old man is unable to build a house as the others do. He has six children but is now living alone and just watched by two sons. However, his two children are also living from hand to mouth by relying on wage as a handyman. Even, Karti who used to work as a porter in Negara Market still helps to support their life. “With his physical limitation, my father often roams to look for used sacks to be re-sold,” said Nengah Murna, 30, a son of Karti. Every day, his father lived in the modest home of 3 x 4 meters walled with plaited bamboo. Deputy Governor Puspayoga and Regent Artha had checked the stuffy bedroom of Karti. Additionally, the building has also looked vulnerable here and there. Karti whose hearing has been normal expressed his gratitude for the help of Deputy Governor Puspayoga and Wirasa charity program of BaliTV. He hoped the house was not only for him, but also for his children, especially his grandchildren, who was also living in a bamboo house in front of him. Having chatted, Deputy Governor Puspayoga participated in dismantling the plaited bamboo wall and took down the roof tile with the officials in the ranks of Jembrana Regency. Deputy Regent of Jembrana, I Made Kembang Hartawan, said his party welcomed the arrival of Vice Governor Puspayoga who helped the poor household in Jembrana. As the head of the region, his party thanked for the assistance. He agreed with the Deputy Governor if the house refurbishment program should be effective and well targeted in the field. Meanwhile, in conjunction with the celebration of the Eid and Galungan, Bank Indonesia (BI) of Denpasar had prepared currency (banknotes and coins) worth IDR 3.5 trillion, consisting of large denomination at IDR 3.3 trillion and small denomination at IDR 200 billion. As celebrations in previous years, the demand for small denomination banknotes was predicted to increase. “To meet the people’s demand

for cash, we will optimize the cash service outlet facilities in Bank Indonesia, mobile van services as well as the entire network of commercial banks. Besides, the network of 13 rural banks (BPR) is also ready to serve the cash exchanges for small denomination. Nothing will be charged for this service,” he explained. According to Dwi Pranoto, the inventory of some IDR 3.5 trillion was very adequate in terms of quantity and denomination. BI estimated the cash needs during the period of July and August reached IDR 2.52 trillion. “We are optimistic that money changers will be capable of serving the needs of community,” he concluded. At least 13 students of SMPN 5 Singaraja junior high school were forced to receive treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Buleleng Hospital, Tuesday (Jul 31). The students mostly consisting of girls got injuries after foundering from a pickup truck they mounted on the road section at Penglatan village, Buleleng subdistrict. Such unfortunate incident took place around 09:00 a.m. local time. Prior to the incident, the students of SMPN 5 Singaraja located on Jalan Pulau Irian, Penglatan village, Singaraja, held a hike exercise for the preparation of the RI’s Independence Day anniversary. Eighty four students were getting involved in the activity and divided into four platoons. They exercised for seven kilometers along the route of Penglatan-BanyuningPenarukan-Kubujati and ended on Jalan Pulau Komodo. After the exercise, the students returned to school and transported by pickup truck. Due to limited capacity of the truck, they were transported by turns. For once departure, the truck could convey about 21 students. As

students in general, they sang together to express joy after completing their exercises. Amidst their excitement, they got an accident. It occurred on the second departure. When the truck was passing the bend at Penglatan village, suddenly the left side panel of the truck came off. The students in the truck immediately foundered and fell onto the asphalt surface. Residents nearby who saw the incident promptly rushed to help the students and took them to Buleleng Hospital. Information in Buleleng Hospital mentioned that some 13 students were injured ranging from abrasion to wound. But, there were no casualties in the accident. Sunarto, one of the mentoring teachers in the SMPN 5 Singaraja, said he did not think if the students would get such an accident. With the incident, his party would evaluate its participation in the hike competition scheduled to be held on August 8. “I do not know whether we can participate in the next competition. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LONDON — It’s amazing how much trouble can be stirred up in 140 characters. But also how much intimacy, excitement, global scope and, yes, general zaniness. For better and for worse, the 2012 Olympics are being shaped, shaken and indisputably changed by a social media revolution that four years ago in Beijing was in its toddlerhood. Four days into the games, we’ve already seen (and this is but a partial list): —an athletes’ Twitter campaign objecting to sponsorship restrictions that went viral under the hashtag “WeDemandChange.” —a TV viewers uprising over Olympic broadcaster NBC’s decision not to live stream the opening ceremony. —two athletes kicked out for racist tweets. —a fan arrested Tuesday after a series of threatening posts, including one in which he vowed to drown a British diver, and another in which he told the athlete he had failed his dead father by not winning. For Olympics organizers who pride themselves on putting on a carefully choreographed — obsessively controlled, some would say — 17-day show, the bursts of Twitter activity are like gamma rays escaping from a solar flare. They’re impossible to stop and

spellbinding to behold. “I don’t think we would seek to control it, nor could we,” said International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams. He said more than 15 million fans are following and participating in the Olympic experience via Twitter and other social media platforms, not to mention a good proportion of the 10,800 athletes. “Used the right way, we embrace social media,” he said. “And, if you look at the guidelines, we positively encourage it.” The problem is, it isn’t always used that way. The immediacy and public nature of Twitter and its propensity to induce off-the-cuff irreverence, and sometimes breathtaking ugliness, has added a new and chaotic element to an event where everything from urine samples to sponsors’ logos to London traffic is arranged with overcaffeinated attention to detail worthy of a royal wedding.

“Though organizers have spent months touting this as the first social media Summer Games, many of them seem to have been totally unprepared for the huge impact that Twitter has had,” said Andy Miah, director of the Creative Futures Institute at the University of the West of Scotland. “I think there was some naivete about the likely role of social media from both participants and from the organizers. Many of them appear to have been wrongfooted.” Twitter has been used in many ways during its brief life — some very organized and tactical, some more spontaneous and disorderly. It has been a tool of protest and organization for the Occupy Wall Street movement and Arab Spring activists. Yet it has also led to the downfall of click-happy politicians, and the sometimes embarrassing late-night revelations of A-list celebrities.

GENEVA — Delegates overseeing a 175-nation endangered species treaty adopted measures Friday intended to curb smuggling of elephant ivory and rhino horn, including a new plan to eventually allow ivory to be legally traded again in global markets. The plan for allowing ivory to be traded legally for the first time in more than two decades will be fine-tuned and presented again in October, then considered for final approval next March in Bangkok. It was among the most hotly debated items at a weeklong meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, known as CITES, that ended Friday. Some 300 delegates in Geneva agreed by consensus to a series of measures and sanctions on trade in endangered species. The ivory plan envisions a resumption in trading only from existing stocks gathered from elephants that have died as a result of natural causes. A global ban on ivory trading took effect in 1989 to curb elephant poaching in Africa, but in the past decade the problem grew again with rising Asian demand for ivory chopsticks, statues and jewelry. The long-running global debate over elephants has focused on the benefits of raising revenue from legal ivory sales that could be used to pay for conservation measures and ways of protecting local communities that live in close proximity to large and sometimes dangerous animals. Proponents also have argued that legalizing the trade could dampen prices and, therefore, demand for ivory on the black market, but some conservation groups have said they remain skeptical that it will work and that in fact sales could only increase poaching. No culling or poaching would be authorized under the plan. Much of the focus was on how to strengthen enforcement while also dampening consumer demand. The female dolphins that wear marine basket sponges on their beaks to scour the sandy bottoms of deep channels for fish associate more with each other than with non-sponge users, the researchers said. (Sponges are filter-feeding invertebrates that come in all shapes and sizes but tend to look like sponges, as they are porous.) These results initially surprised study co-author and behavioral biologist Janet Mann of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Sponge-using dolphins, called spongers, are solitary for the most part. “[At first] it seemed like the spongers weren’t that interested in a social life,” Mann said. But over 22 years of observing the Shark Bay dolphins, a pattern emerged, and “it seemed [the spongers] were going out of their way to hang out with other spongers,” Mann said. Mann and her colleagues compared the strength of social connections between both male and female spongers and non-spongers that lived in the same area, thereby eliminating differences in habitat that could potentially affect grouping behavior.

Sanur with the beautiful white sandy beaches and the famous Le Mayeur Museum are well known by tourists throughout the world. One of the icons for Bali tourism has been famous since the colonialism era. At that time, the Netherlands army landed on Sanur Beach in 1906. The beach also can be found in very old inscription about Bali’s history and also on an old stone writing of the Kasari Warmadewa King in 917 where now can be seen on the southern part of Blanjong, Sanur. Then, the small village started to get its name among the foreign artists. In 1930, many foreign artists lived in Sanur, some of them were Katharane and Jack Mershon, dancers and photographer from US, Hans and Rolf Neuhaus who made art gallery in the fishermen village. However, the most monumental artist ever stayed in Sanur obviously was a painter from Belgium, Andrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres. Then, he married a woman from Banjar Kelandis, Ni Polok and stayed in the village since 1937. The couple was the first to introduce Sanur Beach to the international world as a wonderful tourism destination. As the time go by, Sanur changed significantly. The transformation happened on the way of live of the inhabitants and the economics condition of Sanur. Many tourism businesses developed rapidly in the village. Sanur developed into an icon of tourism village, well known by tourists throughout the world, especially after the establishment of Bali Beach Hotel in 1966. Before the hotel officially opened, the tourists stayed in Bali Hotel in Denpasar. The head of Indonesian Tour Guide Association (HPI), I Nyoman Kandia, said that Sanur is still one of the favorite destinations in Bali even after other destination developed in the island. “The tourism site is beautiful and has great historical value, two main things needed to become famous destination in Bali,” he added. Kandia also said that the supporting facilities for tourism are also very complete in Sanur. In addition to hotels, other tourism businesses also develop in the area such as souvenir and handicrafts shops. That is also including the entertainment industry which develops along with the tourism business. Nowadays, fishermen seem to be forgotten by the people in Sanur and most of them turn to the tourism industry. Unfortunetly, the development of Sanur in tourism is not being prepared properly. WASHINGTON - The Federal Reserve is likely to show on Wednesday that it is ready to act against a weakening economy but stop short of aggressive measures for now. Economists say the central bank could well push back its guidance for when it sees the need for an eventual rate hike into 2015 from the current Fed consensus of late-2014, a move that could signal the depth of the central bank’s concerns about the economy and hint at new measures ahead. Wall Street is braced for another round of Fed bond purchases, and some see an off chance that it might even come this afternoon. But analysts believe policymakers will wait until at least September, giving them more time to lay out the case for their preferred method for easing policy in speeches between now and then. “We do not expect any new initiative from the Fed,” said Eric Green, economist at TD Securities. “A dovish statement signaling willingness to do more will manage frustrated expectations for more (monetary easing).” Fed officials will hint at their intent to deliver further stimulus in part through what most analysts envision as a substantially weaker outlook on

the U.S. economy than that delivered in June. At that time, the Fed predicted the U.S. economy would grow between 1.9 percent and 2.4 percent this year, an estimate that now looks optimistic. “It seems like a virtual certainty that they’ll mark down their expectations for growth,” said Michael Cloherty, economist at RBC Capital. “Not doing so would seem almost out of touch.” However, the Fed will not release another set of official forecasts until September, so it will have to allude to such a shift through changes in the language of its closely-read post-meeting statement. This activity is conducted in the middle courtyard by imitating the wave motion. All the players line up by holding the other’s hands, moving back and forth in front of the shrines. Their movement looks like a fish catcher using conical nets (juru pencar) and it is repeated again and again as well as followed by flying movement like birds while taking a sampian (arrangement of young coconut leaf) at certain shrine. Each player then takes a sampian and then holds a war. In the war, all the players do not distinguish which ones are friends or enemies. They will chase each other, hit each other or pull to one side. Such an attraction is accompanied by gamelan orchestra in a very dynamic rhythm. If each Jro Premas has managed to beat another player up to

three times, then the attraction can be ended. All the sampian weapons used will be returned to its original place. The next battle is the turn of men’s group involving huge number of participants. At first, they move by imitating the movement of wave as practiced by Jro Permas. Afterward, they run around the temple for three times clockwise and then say prayers together. Although the players already get possessed by the spirit of struggle, the Siat Sampian may not yet begin. This Parekan group should get around the temple for three times while holding sampian. Having done this, the atmosphere of war begins where participants no longer distinguish the opponents, friends, uncle or other relatives. They wave the sampian like mace and spear. Happiness and excitement expression can be clearly seen on the participants. Every participant looks satisfied and pleased as they can devote something to their deities sincerely.

A dead humpback whale washed up in a Sydney ocean pool early Wednesday, surprising morning swimmers and causing a major headache for rescuers who must now remove it. The 11.6 metre (38 foot) young adult humpback, which appeared to have been dead for several days, washed up at Newport beach’s ocean baths overnight as rough seas lashed parts of Australia’s east coast. Ocean baths are open-air manmade structures on the edge of the beach filled with sea water. “It does have some external injuries but there’s no way of knowing whether they were anti-mortem or post-mortem,” said Wendy McFarlane from the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA). McFarlane said one possible explanation for the otherwise seemingly healthy animal, estimated to be about 25 to 30 tonnes, to die at sea could be that it had

been struck by a ship. J A K A RTA - Indonesian police have intercepted 85 endangered pangolins, most of them alive despite being stuffed into sacks by suspected smugglers, an official said Tuesday. The animals, also known as scaly anteaters and prized mostly in China and Vietnam as food and medicine, were packed in 14 sacks when they were seized at a bus station in the city of Medan in North Sumatra province on Saturday, said Yoris Marzuki, chief detective of the local police. “About 80 percent were still alive. We suspect that they were being smuggled abroad via Malaysia to Hong Kong or mainland China,” he told AFP. He said police had acted on a tip-off but that no arrests had been made. “We are still investigating the case,” he said, adding that police were working with the natural resources conservation agency to release the animals back to the wild.

Circulation of counterfeit money in Bali reaches 1,386 sheets Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Bank Indonesia (BI) of Denpasar noted that acquisition of cash transactions using banknotes whose authenticity was doubtful until the first half of 2012 amounted to 1,386 sheets valued at IDR 129.215 million. BI urged people to be more careful and cautious in conducting transactions in cash. Representative Head of Bank Indonesia for the Region III, Dwi Pranoto, said in Denpasar on Monday night (Jul 30) that irresponsible parties took advantage of the Eid and Galungan moments to circulate the banknotes whose authenticity was doubtful or counterfeit money. “The most counterfeit banknotes happen to the denomination of IDR 100,000 (± 88.1 percent) and denomination of IDR 50,000 (9.52 percent). To that end, the community must better understand how to recognize the genuine and counterfeit money,” he said. According to him, to know the authenticity of the money could be proved by seen, touched and held up to a light.
