Affleck, Garner announce divorce
LOS ANGELES - Hollywood A-list power couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced the end of their 10-year marriage Tuesday, ending months of rumors. The confirmation of the split between the Oscar-winning actor/director and his actress wife came a day after their wedding anniversary. The 42-year-old Affleck and 43-year-old Garner started dating shortly after meeting on the set of “Daredevil” in 2003. They married two years later in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Their three children are Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and three-year-old Samuel. Their 10th wedding anniversary was on Monday. Celebrity news website TMZ reported that, although they will file for divorce, it won’t be done imme-
diately. The split was described as “amicable” and the former couple will share joint custody of their children. They will work things through with a mediator and business managers, filing divorce papers only once property and custody issues are resolved, the report said, citing unidentified sources. According to People magazine, the strain between the couple has become increasingly obvious, fuel-
ing supermarket tabloid reports for months that they were on the verge of splitting. They have tried to put on a united front for their children, but earlier this month the imminent breakup was clear when they were spotted out at a farmer’s market. “They looked miserable,” an eyewitness says. Affleck, who won best screenplay Oscar for 1997’s “Good Will Hunting” and best picture Academy Award for “Argo” in 2013, stars as Batman in the upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” movie. It can be seen from the domestic tourist visits declining greatly during this holiday season. “The growth of tourism has not been maximized in June. Both domestic and foreign travelers are not maximized. Hotel occupancy rate still ranges from 60 percent to 65 percent,” said Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Badung Chapter, I Gusti Ngurah Ray Suryawijaya, when asked for his confirmation. Actually, continued Ray, the hotel occupancy rate in June and
September usually reaches above 75 percent. Other than not having reached maximal occupancy, MICE tourism has not showed a significant improvement. His party asked the government to make tourism promotion more intensively, and resolutely implement the policy of free visas for 45 countries. As expected, it can increase the low hotel occupancy rate until September. “Tourism industry players cur-
rently must anticipate by improving efficiency and quality of service,” he continued. Moreover, Bali does not get a help from central government in the matter of infrastructure development to boost the economy. In other words, tourism becomes the only one leading sector for Bali. On the other hand, there is currently quite dramatic decrease in tourist arrival even though
national holiday is still going on. “We call on my colleagues in the tourism sector to encourage this condition and attempt not to lay off employees. Then, local government must make cooperation with other local governments to invite them to organize activities like meetings and others in Bali,” he continued. He argued that amid the difficult economic situation like today, it is impossible to rely on the public to travel because they would put priority on staples. On that account, it is only the government’s activities such as meetings in Bali that can be relied on to drive the domestic tourism growth. However, the breakthrough of providing free condom in an effort to minimize the sexually transmitted diseases is misused by junior and senior high school students that clandestinely steal the condoms when the officers are not

An attractive wording drawing the attention of junior and high school students in the area of Seririt easily spreads where it is said that the Seririt I health center distributes condoms at free of charge. A small cardboard box indeed carries the wording ‘Free Condom, Please Take One,” and next to it is placed the oral rehydration salt and generic drugs. Unfortunately, when the content is checked, in fact the free condom has run out. When asked, the
officer at information desk of the health center said that the tens of condoms prepared and placed in a hidden place are often stolen by school children that take more than one sachet. “Content of this box has run out, sir. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Sugary drinks may cause 184,000 global deaths a year
WASHINGTON - Sodas and other sugary drinks may cause up to 184,000 deaths a year worldwide, according to a study published Monday in the journal Circulation. Billed as a first, the report analyzed the global risks of death due to diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancers linked to the consumption of sugary drinks. Researchers estimated that around 133,000 people died from diabetes due to the consumption
of what the report called “sugarsweetened beverages.” Around 45,000 people died globally from cardiovascular diseases arising from sugary drink consumption and 6,450 people died from cancers linked to the beverages, researchers estimated. “Many countries in the world
have a significant number of deaths occurring from a single dietary factor, sugar-sweetened beverages. It should be a global priority to substantially reduce or eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages from the diet,” said study author Dariush Mozaffarian from Tufts University in
Boston. Mexico had the highest death rate due to sugary beverages with a rate of 450 deaths per million adults, the report said. It was followed by the United States with 125 estimated deaths per million adults. Researchers also said the general quantity of sugar available in a nation correlated with the country’s frequency of diabe-
tes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. The report also found 76 percent of deaths related to soda and other sugary drink consumption occurred in low to middle income countries. Fruit juices were not included in the research, which analyzed 62 dietary surveys conducted between 1980 and 2010 in 51 countries. (afp)
New questions about why more women than men have Alzheimer’s
WASHINGTON — Nearly two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease are women, and now some scientists are questioning the long-held assumption that it’s just because they tend to live longer than men. What else may put woman at extra risk? Could it be genetics? Biological differences in how women age? Maybe even lifestyle factors? Finding out might affect treatments or preventive care. One worrisome hint is that research shows a notorious Alzheimer’srelated gene has a bigger impact on women than men. “There are enough biological questions pointing to increased risk in women that we need to delve into that and find out why,” said Maria Carrillo, chief science officer for the Alzheimer’s Association. Last month, the association brought 15 leading scientists together to ask what’s known about women’s risk. Later this summer, Carrillo said it plans to begin funding research to address some of the gaps. “There is a lot that is not understood and not known. It’s time we did something about it,” she added. A recent Alzheimer ’s Association report estimates that at age 65, women have about a 1 in 6 chance of developing Alzheimer’s during the rest of their lives, compared with a 1 in 11 chance for men. The tricky part is determining how much of the disparity is due to women’s longevity or other factors. “It is true that age is the greatest risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease,” said University of Southern California professor Roberta Diaz Brinton,
who presented data on gender differences at a meeting of the National Institutes of Health this year. But, she said, “on average, women live four or five years longer than men, and we know that Alzheimer’s is a disease that starts 20 years before the diagnosis.” That’s how early cellular damage can quietly begin. Brinton researches if menopause can be a tipping point that leaves certain women vulnerable. However it starts brewing, there’s some evidence that once Alzheimer’s is diagnosed, women may worsen faster; scans show more rapid shrinkage of certain brain areas. But gene research offers the most startling evidence of a sex difference. Stanford University researchers analyzed records of more than 8,000 people for a form of a gene named ApoE-4, long known to increase Alzheimer’s risk. Women who carry a copy of that gene variant were about twice as likely to eventually develop Alzheimer’s as women without the gene, while men’s risk was only slightly increased, Stanford’s Dr. Michael Greicius reported last year. It’s not clear why. It may be in how the gene interacts with estrogen, Brinton said. Amy Shives, 57, of Spokane, Washington state, recalls when her mother began showing symptoms of Alzheimer ’s. But it wasn’t until after her own diagnosis a few years ago that Shives looked up the gender statistics. “That was alarming,” said Shives, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, which struck at a younger-than-usual age and forced her retirement as a college
counselor. “The impact on our lives and that of our families is extraordinary.” Data from the long-running Framingham, Massachusetts, health study suggests that because more men die from heart disease in middle age, those who survive past 65 may have healthier hearts that in turn provide some brain
protection. Many of the same factors — obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes — that damage arteries also are Alzheimer’s risks. What about hormones? That’s been hard to pin down. Years ago, a major study found that estrogen therapy after 65 might increase risk of dementia, although later research showed hormone re-
placement around the onset of menopause wasn’t a problem. Brinton studies how menopause changes the brain. Estrogen helps regulate the brain’s metabolism, how it produces the energy for proper cognitive function, and it must switch to a less efficient backup method as estrogen plummets, she explained. GIANYAR - Monkey Forest attraction indeed has been well-known worldwide. In July, August and December, the number of tourists visiting this attraction can surely go beyond the visit to tourist attraction owned by the government of Gianyar like the Tirta Empul.
Operations Manager of the Monkey Forest Ubud, I Nyoman Buana, said that foreign tourist visit on normal season can reach 1,500 to 2,000 each day. It remains far from the visit to tourist attractions like the Tirta Empul reaching 5,000 visitors each day on weekdays. “On usual days, beyond July, August and December, the number of tourist visitor ranges around 2,000 visitors each day,” he said. However, when entering July, August and December, the Monkey Forest attraction is certainly thronged by tourist arrivals, where the number of visitors is estimated to reach approximately tens of thousands. This number is estimated to compete against the Tirta Empul attraction, denoting the mainstay of Gianyar County. “Tourist visit this month is indeed very crowded and when coming further into the location we’ll only see human heads, while the monkeys are not seen,” he said. He said that such condition is inseparable from the strategic location of the Monkey Forest attraction in Ubud aside from being the center of tourist arrivals in Bali. “When visitors come from Kintamani, they will definitely stop by here, and so do those
from Tampaksiring. Monkey Forest in Ubud is also very close to Sanur and Denpasar,” he said He added that his party will also prepare a performance stage for visitors. However, the development remains in planning process. “Previously, the existing stage was used for the venue of barong dance contest. Hopefully, it could be functioned as the venue of a show to attract more visitors while seeing monkeys,” he hoped. Based on the data from the Gianyar Tourism Office from January to May 2015, the number of travelers visiting Tirta Empul reached 163,406 people, the largest number compared to other
tourist attractions managed by the government of Gianyar. The average tourist arrival, both domestic and foreign travelers, to Tirta Empul reaches 32,681 people each month. 16 villages belong to red zone, Klungkung prone to rabies
SEMARAPURA - It turns out that Klungkung really becomes a rabies-prone area. It happens because 16 villages of totally 63 villages in this region are categorized into red zones or prone to rabies. Determination of this red zone category is following the finding of dogs tested positive for the rabies virus at the villages. In the meantime, the islands of Nusa Penida are considered free from rabies so far. It is also recognized by the Head of the PPK Klungkung, I Gusti Ngurah Badiwangsa, when confirmed.

According to Badiwangsa, the 16 villages belonging to the red zone spread across three subdistricts, except for Nusa Penida. For Dawan subdistrict, the villages categorized into red zone are Dawan Klod, Kusamba, Gunaksa, Pikat and Besan. In the meantime, in the Banjarangkan subdistrict includes Timuhun, Banjarangkan, Getakan, Aan, Tohpati and Bumbungan, while in Klungkung subdistrict includes Semarapura Klod Kangin, Tangkas, Kamasan, Tegak and Selat. In addition, Badiwangsa said that the 16 villages are categorized into red zone because a dog positively-tested for rabies virus was found at those villages. In the meantime, the rabies cases in Klungkung are said to have been taking place since 2013. The cases continue to spread to several villages. The last case of rabies casualties afflicted a boy of elementary school student at Getakan village. However, Badiwangsa stated to have made elimination and vaccine administration to pet dogs of residents before the victim died. “Previously, no cases occurred here. The rabies case just emerged in 2013,” said Badiwangsa. What about the handling of rabies case in Klungkung? This Buleleng-origin official claimed to have made various efforts. One of them is focusing on the prevention by conducting vaccination and dog elimination at villages categorized into red zone. Moreover, according to him, the dog vaccine stock has no problem because Klungkung is helped by Bali Province with dog vaccine amounting to 3,600 dosages. However, Badiwangsa claimed that so far his party got disturbance related to prevention of rabies cases in Klungkung. Allegedly there were individuals from outside suspected of deliberately leaving a dog in Klungkung. Recently, Badiwangsa claimed to get information that there are unscrupulous people deliberately leaving a dog on Jalan Ngurah Rai near petrol station at night. “As the information I got two days ago there were people discarding dog there at night,” he said. Hit by tidal waves cemetery collapses, dike of villa gets eroded
AMLAPURA - Tidal waves in the past three days adversely affected the coastal areas of Purwakerti village, Abang subdistrict. Local cemetery area collapsed along with a number of graves. In the meantime, tens of meters of embankment next to a villa building also gets eroded after being hit by tidal waves. Headman of Purwakerti, Wayan Sentuni Artana, said on Tuesday (Jun. 30) that tidal waves at the coastal areas of the village have happened since Saturday night (Jun. 27). Ahead of full moon night, Wednesday (Jul. 1), the waves increasingly turned violent every night. As a result, almost half of the
cemetery of Tukad Besi customary village, Purwakerti, collapsed. “The coastline has regularly become the target of tidal waves. Abrasion has eroded the land area located about 100 meters from the beach,” he said. The cemetery land originally spreading on the area of approximately 1.5 hectares has now shrunk. Without getting immediate handling, he claimed to fear that more areas of the cemetery will collapse following the graves. The tidal waves also caused the occupants of the villa located just a few meters from the shoreline to be frightened lately. At least the lacing of tidal waves caused the
coastal protection dike made by the villa owner to get eroded. As a result, when the tide hits at night, the seawater intruded into the villa. Three villas are undergoing these effects making tens of meters of the embankment damaged. They include the Villa Casavelix, Villa Ashling and another villa being under construction. “The waves are very terrible, sir. It is the most severe because the seawater had intruded into the villa, said Komang Suartini, an employee of the Villa Casavelix, The villa owners are confused to deal with the tidal waves. Actually, when the villas were established a few years ago, the dis-
tance between the buildings and the edge of the beach was more than 100 meters. He said that the shoreline from Jemeluk, Lebah hamlet to seaside of Bias Lantang Kaler hamlet approximately 4 kilometers has long been eroded by the abrasion. The situation causes the waterfront area known as one of the tourist destinations to look chaotic. Overcoming this problem, especially the collapsed cemetery, his party claimed to have submitted a report to the Karangasem Regent I Wayan Geredeg and forwarded it to the Karangasem Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and Public Works. How-
ever, until now there has been no response. In addition, his party has also addressed the handling of the damage to the coastline through RPJMDes last year and has been included in the subdistrict development planning meeting. Unfortunately, there has been no follow up so far. Nevertheless, Sentuni Artana said that he will make another report to the regent of Karangasem so that the abrasion on Purwakerti Beach at the village can be addressed immediately. A mass of hot air moving north from Africa has driven up temperatures in Spain, Portugal, Britain and France in recent days. Temperatures in Paris were expected to hit 39 degrees Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) Wednesday afternoon. Southwest France saw temperatures reaching 42 C (107 F) and Cordoba in southern Spain recorded nearly 44 C (111 F). Paris authorities opened special air-conditioned rooms to the public and were checking on the elderly. France is particularly sensitive about the issue since thousands of people died in a heat wave in 2003. The last time Paris saw 40 C in July was in 1947, according to Meteo France forecaster Francois Gourand. August is hotter, but 2003 was the last time Paris saw 40 C in that month. At Paris’ Gare de Lyon train station, public announcements repeatedly reminded people to drink lots of water and not overexert. A few medics were deployed in case of emergency. “We have a lot of heat-wave days ahead of us,” Gourand said, noting that a wide swath of southern France from Toulouse to Lyon was looking at temperatures of up to 41 C until the middle of next week. British and Italian authorities were also on alert Wednesday. In Britain, less accustomed to sweltering climes than is France, one cheeky Web site gave a “taps aff” — Scottish for “tops off” — grade to London as the mercury was forecast to hit 34 C Wednesday in a one-day heat wave. Portugal, meanwhile, is bracing for what could be a challenging forest fire season after an exceptionally dry winter and spring, and the hottest and driest June for 12 years. New Chinese law reinforces government control of cyberspace
BEIJING — China’s legislature passed sweeping legislation on Wednesday that reinforces government controls over cyberspace, as the nation’s leaders try to address what they see as growing threats to Chinese networks and national security. The vaguely worded National Security Law is one of several new regulatory moves by China that worry privacy advocates and have foreign businesses concerned about potential harm to their operations inside the country. The law calls for strengthened management over the web and tougher measures against online attacks, theft of secrets, and the spread of illegal or harmful information. It said core information technology, critical infrastructure and important systems and data must be “secure and controllable” in
order to protect China’s sovereignty over its cyberspace. The law offered no details on how China would achieve the goals, although a vast government Internet monitoring system has been in place for years. China says it is a major target of hacking and other cyberattacks, and the ruling Communist Party has expended vast efforts in blocking online content it deems subversive or illegal. China is also accused of running a state-sponsored effort to hack computers and steal government and commercial secrets overseas, while also spying on and harassing pro-democracy, Tibetan and human rights groups based abroad. Most recently, Beijing was suspected as being behind a massive hack into a U.S. federal government
computer server that resulted in the theft of personnel and security clearance records of 14 million employees and contractors. Chinese officials always deny engaging in such actions. The National Security Law, passed overwhelmingly by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, replaces a law that focused more narrowly on counter-espionage. In addition to cyberspace, the new legislation covers a wide range of areas including the economy, social stability, territorial integrity, the military, culture, finance, technology, the environment and food safety. ATHENS — Greece slipped deeper into its financial abyss after the bailout program it has relied on for five years expired at midnight Tuesday and the country failed to repay a loan due to the International Monetary Fund, deepening fears over whether it will be able to remain in the eurozone. With its failure to repay the roughly 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion) to the IMF, Greece became the first developed country to fall into arrears on payments to the fund. The last country to do so was Zimbabwe in 2001. After Greece made a last-ditch effort to extend its bailout, eurozone finance ministers decided in a teleconference late Tuesday night that there was no way they could reach a deal before the deadline. “It would be crazy to extend the program,” said Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who heads the eurozone finance ministers’ body known as the eurogroup.
“So that cannot happen and will not happen.” “The program expires tonight,” Dijsselbloem said. The brinkmanship that has characterized Greece’s bailout negotiations with its European creditors and the IMF rose several notches over the weekend, when Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced he would put a deal proposal by creditors to a referendum on Sunday and urged a “No” vote. The move increased fears the country could soon fall out of the euro currency bloc and Greeks rushed to pull money out of ATMs, leading the government to shutter its

BEIJING — China needs fundamental reform of its state-dominated financial system to keep economic growth on track, the World Bank said Wednesday. The communist government needs to address wasteful investment, over-indebtedness and weak regulation of its shadow banking system, the bank said in a report. It said failure to do that could “deflect the economic trajectory.” The recommendations echo private sector analysts who say Beijing needs to overhaul a government-run banking system that subsidizes state industry at the expense of savers and that provides little credit to entrepreneurs and emerging industries. “China has reached a critical phase of its economic and social development path,” the World Bank said. The financial system “will need to be transformed to increase the efficiency of new investments and widen access to finance, enabling China to sustain solid growth and rebalance its economy.” The bank said it expects China’s economic growth to decelerate this
year to 7.1 percent from last year’s two-decade low of 7.4 percent. It said growth should decline further to 6.9 percent by 2017. The communist leadership is in the midst of a marathon effort to make China’s economy more efficient and productive, in part by giving entrepreneurs a bigger role. The leadership has promised to make the banking system more market-oriented but has taken only modest steps to ease controls on interest rates and increase lending to the private sector. Beijing needs to separate its roles as owner of China’s banks, regulator and strategic planner and to construct a system that channels more lending to productive industries and manages risks better, the World Bank said. The Chinese state has formal ownership of 65 percent of commercial bank assets and de facto control of 95 percent of assets, according to the report. LONDON — Britain’s Airports Commission unanimously recommended the construction of a third runway at London’s Heathrow Airport on Wednesday in a long-awaited report on how best to expand the country’s aviation capacity. The commission decided that Heathrow presented a stronger case for the British economy than rival Gatwick. But it stressed that Europe’s largest airport needs to address air quality, noise and community concerns. “Heathrow offers the kind of longhaul connectivity flights to emerging markets which are very important to the future of the British economy and expanding it would allow Heathrow to offers more of those flights,” Commission chair Howard Davies told the BBC. “Gatwick is much more focused on short-haul intra-European flying.” The commission studied the matter for nearly three years — an effort to get facts on the table amid a toxic political debate. Critics argue that an independent commission also offered a way for Prime Minister David Cameron to duck the issue. He had once pledged that a third runway would not happen, “no ifs, no buts,” but he is under pressure from the business community to expand. England needs more airport capacity to meet the growing demands of business travelers and tourists into the coming decades. Heathrow, west of central London and rival Gatwick, south of the city, have offered competing projects that will cost as much as 18.6 billion pounds ($29.1 billion).
But expansion comes with a cost: Homes will be destroyed and surviving neighborhoods will have to cope with increased noise, pollution and traffic. Some communities will be completely bulldozed. Longtime opponent, London Mayor Boris Johnson, said the expanding Heathrow merely exacerbates poor planning decisions from the past. “I don’t think this is going to happen,” he told the BBC. “This is the sort of thing that you could have possibly have gotten away with in China in the 1950s. The impact on London, the impact on the city, the environmental cost, the whole human rights, legal challenges ... will be so great. I don’t think it’s deliverable.’ The commission tried to mitigate those concerns by offering conditions, recommending a ban on all scheduled flights from 11:30 p.m. to 6 a.m., having firm commitments in Parliament to have no fourth runway and a legally binding “noise envelope” to limit noise created by the airport. Residents seized on the conditions,
arguing that it would be impossible for Heathrow to honor those measures. They say they will press on, undaunted by what they see as a big corporation trying to crush local residents for everbigger profits. “The battle starts now,” said Justine Bayley, whose home in the village of Harmondsworth would become uninhabitable should the proposal go through. “I shall go on trying to get my point across.” Gatwick also made clear it was ready to keep fighting, underscoring aspects of the report which describe its proposal as “feasible,” albeit with fewer economic advantages to that of the Heathrow proposal. “Gatwick is still very much in the race.” Gatwick chief executive Stewart Wingate said. It is a race that may take a long time to complete, though. Business leaders are arguing that the decision has taken too long already, and that the nation’s competitiveness could falter in a globalized world. Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said that Russia halted the supply at 10 a.m. (0700 GMT, 3 a.m. EDT) because Ukraine didn’t make an advance payment for July’s delivery. “Gazprom is not going to send gas to Ukraine at any price without the advance payment,” Miller said in comments carried by Russian news agencies. Russian and Ukrainian energy ministers on Tuesday failed to reach an agreement on future supplies. Russia offered Ukraine a price of $247 per cubic meter, a $40 discount. Ukraine wanted a $100 discount. Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak insisted that the discount that Ukraine is asking for is “unjustified” and would put the cost of supplying Ukraine below the market rate. Ukrainian officials didn’t immediately comment on Wednesday about Gazprom’s decision to halt supplies. But Ukrainian Energy Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn said Tuesday that a discount that Russia offered
wasn’t enough and that Ukraine will buy gas from other nations starting July 1 until an agreement is reached with Russia. Gas consumption is low at this time of year, allowing Ukraine to bargain for better terms. Ukraine has said it has found cheaper supplies from other European nations which resell the gas they get from Russia. Moscow has described these so-called reverse supplies as illegal. Ukraine imported a third of its total gas supplies from Russia in the first six months of the year, the national pipeline operator said Wednesday. Pricing disputes between Russia and Ukraine in the past have led to gas wars, leaving other European nations without heating in the dead of winter. The last deal that Russia and Ukraine signed a deal in October offered Kiev a discount, but required it to pay in advance for gas shipments. Ukraine, which is struggling to balance its budget amid protracted fighting against Russia-backed separatists in the east, relies heavily on gas supplies for its metals and machinery industries. (ap)
EL-ARISH, Egypt — Islamic militants on Wednesday unleashed a wave of simultaneous attacks, including suicide car bombings, on Egyptian army checkpoints in the restive northern Sinai Peninsula, killing at least 38 soldiers, security and military officials said. The coordinated morning assaults in Sinai came a day after Egypt’s president pledged to step up the battle against Islamic militants and two days after the country’s state prosecutor was assassinated in the capital, Cairo. The scope and intensity of the attacks underscored the resilience and advanced planning by the militants who have for years battled Egyptian security forces in northern Sinai but intensified their insurgency over the past two years just as the government threw more resources into the drawn-out fight. An Islamic State affiliate in Egypt claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attacks, saying its fighters targeted a total of 15 army and police positions and staged three suicide bombings, two of which targeted checkpoints and one that hit an officers’ club in the nearby city of el-Arish. The authenticity of the claim could not be immediately verified but it was posted on a Facebook
page associated with the group. Except for the attack at the officers’ club, the rest took place in the town of Sheikh Zuweid and targeted at least six military checkpoints, the officials said. The militants also took soldiers captive and seized weapons and several armored vehicles, they added, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. At least 54 other soldiers were wounded, the officials said. As fighting raged, an army Apache gunship destroyed one of the armored carriers captured by the militants as they were driving it away, the officials added. Egypt’s military spokesman, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Samir, said clashes were still underway in the area between the armed forces and the militants. His statement put the number of soldiers killed so far at 10, but the conflicting numbers could not immediately be reconciled in the immediate aftermath of a major attack. INDONESIA Indonesia plane had more people, raising death toll to 141
MEDAN — An air force transport plane that crashed in Indonesia carried more passengers than the military previously reported, raising the death toll to more than 140 on Wednesday combined with victims from the neighborhood where the aircraft went down in flames. So far, 141 bodies have been recovered from the rubble of a residential area in Medan city, where the C-130 Hercules crashed shortly after takeoff on Tuesday, North Sumatra police Maj. A. Tarigan told TVOne station. The death toll rose from 74 late Tuesday evening. The air force says 122 people were on board, including military personnel and their families. Officials don’t expect any survivors from the plane. Initially, the air force said there were 12 crew members on the C-130 and did not mention passengers. It then repeatedly raised the numbers of people aboard, indicating lax controls and raising questions about whether it was accepting paying passengers despite previous promises to crack down on the practice. Hitching rides on military planes to reach remote destinations is common in Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago that spans three time zones. The plane had traveled from the capital, Jakarta, and stopped at two locations before arriving at Medan on Sumatra, one of Indonesia’s main islands. Dozens of family members gathered at Medan’s Adam Malik hospital on Wednesday. The crash of the aircraft, which had been in service since 1964, occurred only two minutes after it took off from Soewondo air force base in Medan, headed for Natuna. It plowed into a building that local media said contained shops and homes. Witnesses said the plane was flying low and flames and smoke streamed from it before crashing. Air force chief Air Marshal Agus Supriatna has said the pilot told the control tower that he needed to turn back because of engine trouble and the plane crashed while turning right to return to the airport. The consumer price index rose 7.26 percent year-on-year, the government’s Statistics Agency said. Inflation in May was 7.15 percent.

Sky to split with British Cycling after 2016
LONDON - British Cycling’s partnership with broadcaster Sky will end in 2016 after eight extraordinary years which led to a golden run of Olympic success, two Tour de France champions and put a cynical public back on two wheels. The split, confirmed on Wednesday, will have no impact on pro cycling outfit Team Sky, which hopes to be celebrating another Tour win for Briton Chris Froome in Paris later this month. “British Cycling and Sky will remain firm friends and part with great mutual affection, having achieved amazing things together,” British Cycling chief executive Ian Drake said in a statement. “The last 10 years have been brilliant for our sport -- our membership and participation in cycle sport continues to grow, we’ve encouraged over 1.7 million people to cycle regularly with even more starting all the time and we are seeing the emergence of a new generation of cycling heroes.” Sky’s sponsorship of British Cycling began just before the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and was renewed in 2012 for a further four years amid a surge in popularity for the sport. Team Sky has become one of the heavyweights of world cycling with its budget and infrastructure the envy of many, yet when it began as Sky ProCycling in 2009 and team principal Dave Brailsford promised a first British Tour de France cham-
pion, few believed it would actually happen. The doubters were quickly silenced when Bradley Wiggins wore the yellow jersey through to Paris in 2012 and Froome followed a year later. At the 2012 London Olympics, Britain dominated in the velodrome and on the road, winning eight cycling golds, two silvers and two bronzes. However, it is the impact of British Cycling’s relationship with the broadcaster on recreational and club cycling that has proved most spectacular. According to British Cycling, 1.7 million more people than in 2008 are now cycling regularly, while 1.2 million have taken part in mass participation events called Sky Rides, Sky Ride Locals or Breeze rides since 2009. Membership of British Cycling has expanded from 21,000 in January 2008 to more than 111,000 in June 2015 and 2,034 clubs are now affiliated to the national governing body. “The partnership with Sky since 2008 is an important part of that story. Sky gave British Cycling the platform from which to communicate the best of the sport and, through British Cycling, Sky has delivered lasting and positive change,” Drake added. Argentina routs Paraguay 6-1, reaches Copa America final
CONCEPCION, Chile — Lionel Messi helped set up five goals as Argentina trounced Paraguay 6-1 in the Copa America semifinals on Tuesday, setting up a final against host Chile. Messi assisted in first-half goals by Marcos Rojo and Javier Pastore and one of Angel Di Maria’s second-half goals. The Barcelona star also helped set up the final two goals by Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain 1993 Copa America, when Messi was 6 years old. The Argentines were eliminated by eventual champion Uruguay in the Copa America quarterfinals at home in 2011, and lost consecutive finals to rival Brazil in 2004 and
2007. But Argentina has won the previous four Copa Americas played in Chile — the last in 1991. It’s also never lost to Chile in the tournament. Argentina outplayed Paraguay during most of the match in Concepcion, controlling possession and creating scoring chances from the beginning. Bastia face relegation threat over deficit
PARIS - French football club Bastia could be relegated from the country’s top flight over a 1.3 million euros budget deficit after it failed to provide the necessary financial guarantees. The National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG),
which monitors the accounts of professional clubs in France, ruled that Bastia would be denied their spot in Ligue 1 for the upcoming season over the issue. The Corsican club, however, said it expected to resolve the matter following the sale of Ryan

Argentina routs Paraguay 6-1, reaches Copa America final
CONCEPCION, Chile — Lionel Messi helped set up five goals as Argentina trounced Paraguay 6-1 in the Copa America semifinals on Tuesday, setting up a final against host Chile. Messi assisted in first-half goals by Marcos Rojo and Javier Pastore and one of Angel Di Maria’s second-half goals. The Barcelona star also helped set up the final two goals by Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain 1993 Copa America, when Messi was 6 years old. The Argentines were eliminated by eventual champion Uruguay in the Copa America quarterfinals at home in 2011, and lost consecutive finals to rival Brazil in 2004 and

Argentina outplayed Paraguay during most of the match in Concepcion, controlling possession and creating scoring chances from the beginning. The team only struggled for a few minutes before halftime, but came back to crush its rivals in the second half. “It was a sizable score, but Paraguayans have to be proud of this team, which is continuing to improve,” said Paraguay’s Argentine coach Ramon Diaz, who took over the squad in December after it finished last in World Cup qualifying. “I am very proud of them, they have been working hard to overcome many things and made it to the last four at this tournament.”

Bastia face relegation threat over deficit
PARIS - French football club Bastia could be relegated from the country’s top flight over a 1.3 million euros budget deficit after it failed to provide the necessary financial guarantees. The National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG),
which monitors the accounts of professional clubs in France, ruled that Bastia would be denied their spot in Ligue 1 for the upcoming season over the issue. The Corsican club, however, said it expected to resolve the matter following the sale of Ryan

Sky to split with British Cycling after 2016
LONDON - British Cycling’s partnership with broadcaster Sky will end in 2016 after eight extraordinary years which led to a golden run of Olympic success, two Tour de France champions and put a cynical public back on two wheels. The split, confirmed on Wednesday, will have no impact on pro cycling outfit Team Sky, which hopes to be celebrating another Tour win for Briton Chris Froome in Paris later this month. “British Cycling and Sky will remain firm friends and part with great mutual affection, having achieved amazing things together,” British Cycling chief executive Ian Drake said in a statement. “The last 10 years have been brilliant for our sport -- our membership and participation in cycle sport continues to grow, we’ve encouraged over 1.7 million people to cycle regularly with even more starting all the time and we are seeing the emergence of a new generation of cycling heroes.” Sky’s sponsorship of British Cycling began just before the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and was renewed in 2012 for a further four years amid a surge in popularity for the sport. Team Sky has become one of the heavyweights of world cycling with its budget and infrastructure the envy of many, yet when it began as Sky ProCycling in 2009 and team principal Dave Brailsford promised a first British Tour de France cham-
pion, few believed it would actually happen. The doubters were quickly silenced when Bradley Wiggins wore the yellow jersey through to Paris in 2012 and Froome followed a year later. At the 2012 London Olympics, Britain dominated in the velodrome and on the road, winning eight cycling golds, two silvers and two bronzes. However, it is the impact of British Cycling’s relationship with the broadcaster on recreational and club cycling that has proved most spectacular. According to British Cycling, 1.7 million more people than in 2008 are now cycling regularly, while 1.2 million have taken part in mass participation events called Sky Rides, Sky Ride Locals or Breeze rides since 2009. Membership of British Cycling has expanded from 21,000 in January 2008 to more than 111,000 in June 2015 and 2,034 clubs are now affiliated to the national governing body. “The partnership with Sky since 2008 is an important part of that story. Sky gave British Cycling the platform from which to communicate the best of the sport and, through British Cycling, Sky has delivered lasting and positive change,” Drake added. LONDON — Britain’s Airports Commission unanimously recommended the construction of a third runway at London’s Heathrow Airport on Wednesday in a long-awaited report on how best to expand the country’s aviation capacity. The commission decided that Heathrow presented a stronger case for the British economy than rival Gatwick. But it stressed that Europe’s largest airport needs to address air quality, noise and community concerns. “Heathrow offers the kind of longhaul connectivity flights to emerging markets which are very important to the future of the British economy and expanding it would allow Heathrow to offers more of those flights,” Commission chair Howard Davies told the BBC. “Gatwick is much more focused on short-haul intra-European flying.” The commission studied the matter for nearly three years — an effort to get facts on the table amid a toxic political debate. Critics argue that an independent commission also offered a way for Prime Minister David Cameron to duck the issue. He had once pledged that a third runway would not happen, “no ifs, no buts,” but he is under pressure from the business community to expand. England needs more airport capacity to meet the growing demands of business travelers and tourists into the coming decades. Heathrow, west of central London and rival Gatwick, south of the city, have offered competing projects that will cost as much as 18.6 billion pounds ($29.1 billion).
But expansion comes with a cost: Homes will be destroyed and surviving neighborhoods will have to cope with increased noise, pollution and traffic. Some communities will be completely bulldozed. Longtime opponent, London Mayor Boris Johnson, said the expanding Heathrow merely exacerbates poor planning decisions from the past. “I don’t think this is going to happen,” he told the BBC. “This is the sort of thing that you could have possibly have gotten away with in China in the 1950s. The impact on London, the impact on the city, the environmental cost, the whole human rights, legal challenges ... will be so great. I don’t think it’s deliverable.’ The commission tried to mitigate those concerns by offering conditions, recommending a ban on all scheduled flights from 11:30 p.m. to 6 a.m., having firm commitments in Parliament to have no fourth runway and a legally binding “noise envelope” to limit noise created by the airport. Residents seized on the conditions,
arguing that it would be impossible for Heathrow to honor those measures. They say they will press on, undaunted by what they see as a big corporation trying to crush local residents for everbigger profits. “The battle starts now,” said Justine Bayley, whose home in the village of Harmondsworth would become uninhabitable should the proposal go through. “I shall go on trying to get my point across.” Gatwick also made clear it was ready to keep fighting, underscoring aspects of the report which describe its proposal as “feasible,” albeit with fewer economic advantages to that of the Heathrow proposal. “Gatwick is still very much in the race.” Gatwick chief executive Stewart Wingate said. It is a race that may take a long time to complete, though. Business leaders are arguing that the decision has taken too long already, and that the nation’s competitiveness could falter in a globalized world. Russia halts gas supply to Ukraine amid pricing dispute MOSCOW — Russian gas company Gazprom halted supplies to neighboring Ukraine on Wednesday after the collapse of pricing talks, company official said. Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said that Russia halted the supply at 10 a.m. (0700 GMT, 3 a.m. EDT) because Ukraine didn’t make an advance payment for July’s delivery. “Gazprom is not going to send gas to Ukraine at any price without the advance payment,” Miller said in comments carried by Russian news agencies. Russian and Ukrainian energy ministers on Tuesday failed to reach an agreement on future supplies. Russia offered Ukraine a price of $247 per cubic meter, a $40 discount. Ukraine wanted a $100 discount. Ukraine imported a third of its total gas supplies from Russia in the first six months of the year, the national pipeline operator said Wednesday. Pricing disputes between Russia and Ukraine in the past have led to gas wars, leaving other European nations without heating in the dead of winter. The last deal that Russia and Ukraine signed a deal in October offered Kiev a discount, but required it to pay in advance for gas shipments. EL-ARISH, Egypt — Islamic militants on Wednesday unleashed a wave of simultaneous attacks, including suicide car bombings, on Egyptian army checkpoints in the restive northern Sinai Peninsula, killing at least 38 soldiers, security and military officials said. The coordinated morning assaults in Sinai came a day after Egypt’s president pledged to step up the battle against Islamic militants and two days after the country’s state prosecutor was assassinated in the capital, Cairo. The scope and intensity of the attacks underscored the resilience and advanced planning by the militants who have for years battled Egyptian security forces in northern Sinai but intensified their insurgency over the past two years just as the government threw more resources into the drawn-out fight. An Islamic State affiliate in Egypt claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attacks, saying its fighters targeted a total of 15 army and police positions and staged three suicide bombings, two of which targeted checkpoints and one that hit an officers’ club in the nearby city of el-Arish. The authenticity of the claim could not be immediately verified but it was posted on a Facebook
page associated with the group. Except for the attack at the officers’ club, the rest took place in the town of Sheikh Zuweid and targeted at least six military checkpoints, the officials said. The militants also took soldiers captive and seized weapons and several armored vehicles, they added, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. At least 54 other soldiers were wounded, the officials said. As fighting raged, an army Apache gunship destroyed one of the armored carriers captured by the militants as they were driving it away, the officials added. Egypt’s military spokesman, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Samir, said clashes were still underway in the area between the armed forces and the militants. His statement put the number of soldiers killed so far at 10, but the conflicting numbers could not immediately be reconciled in the immediate aftermath of a major attack. MEDAN — An air force transport plane that crashed in Indonesia carried more passengers than the military previously reported, raising the death toll to more than 140 on Wednesday combined with victims from the neighborhood where the aircraft went down in flames. So far, 141 bodies have been recovered from the rubble of a residential area in Medan city, where the C-130 Hercules crashed shortly after takeoff on Tuesday, North Sumatra police Maj. A. Tarigan told TVOne station. The death toll rose from 74 late Tuesday evening. The air force says 122 people were on board, including military personnel and their families. Officials don’t expect any survivors from the plane. Initially, the air force said there were 12 crew members on the C-130 and did not mention passengers. It then repeatedly raised the numbers of people aboard, indicating lax controls and raising questions about whether it was accepting paying passengers despite previous promises to crack down on the practice. Hitching rides on military planes to reach remote destinations is common in Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago that spans three time zones. The plane had traveled from the capital, Jakarta, and stopped at two locations before arriving at Medan on Sumatra, one of Indonesia’s main islands. Dozens of family members gathered at Medan’s Adam Malik hospital on Wednesday. ATHENS — Greece slipped deeper into its financial abyss after the bailout program it has relied on for five years expired at midnight Tuesday and the country failed to repay a loan due to the International Monetary Fund, deepening fears over whether it will be able to remain in the eurozone. With its failure to repay the roughly 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion) to the IMF, Greece became the first developed country to fall into arrears on payments to the fund. The last country to do so was Zimbabwe in 2001. After Greece made a last-ditch effort to extend its bailout, eurozone finance ministers decided in a teleconference late Tuesday night that there was no way they could reach a deal before the deadline. “It would be crazy to extend the program,” said Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who heads the eurozone finance ministers’ body known as the eurogroup.

BEIJING — China needs fundamental reform of its state-dominated financial system to keep economic growth on track, the World Bank said Wednesday. The communist government needs to address wasteful investment, over-indebtedness and weak regulation of its shadow banking system, the bank said in a report. It said failure to do that could “deflect the economic trajectory.” The recommendations echo private sector analysts who say Beijing needs to overhaul a government-run banking system that subsidizes state industry at the expense of savers and that provides little credit to entrepreneurs and emerging industries. “China has reached a critical phase of its economic and social development path,” the World Bank said. The financial system “will need to be transformed to increase the efficiency of new investments and widen access to finance, enabling China to sustain solid growth and rebalance its economy.” The bank said it expects China’s economic growth to decelerate this
year to 7.1 percent from last year’s two-decade low of 7.4 percent. It said growth should decline further to 6.9 percent by 2017. The communist leadership is in the midst of a marathon effort to make China’s economy more efficient and productive, in part by giving entrepreneurs a bigger role. The leadership has promised to make the banking system more market-oriented but has taken only modest steps to ease controls on interest rates and increase lending to the private sector. Beijing needs to separate its roles as owner of China’s banks, regulator and strategic planner and to construct a system that channels more lending to productive industries and manages risks better, the World Bank said. The Chinese state has formal ownership of 65 percent of commercial bank assets and de facto control of 95 percent of assets, according to the report. 16 villages belong to red zone, Klungkung prone to rabies
SEMARAPURA - It turns out that Klungkung really becomes a rabies-prone area. It happens because 16 villages of totally 63 villages in this region are categorized into red zones or prone to rabies. Determination of this red zone category is following the finding of dogs tested positive for the rabies virus at the villages. In the meantime, the islands of Nusa Penida are considered free from rabies so far. It is also recognized by the Head of the PPK Klungkung, I Gusti Ngurah Badiwangsa, when confirmed.

According to Badiwangsa, the 16 villages belonging to the red zone spread across three subdistricts, except for Nusa Penida. For Dawan subdistrict, the villages categorized into red zone are Dawan Klod, Kusamba, Gunaksa, Pikat and Besan. In the meantime, in the Banjarangkan subdistrict includes Timuhun, Banjarangkan, Getakan, Aan, Tohpati and Bumbungan, while in Klungkung subdistrict includes Semarapura Klod Kangin, Tangkas, Kamasan, Tegak and Selat. In addition, Badiwangsa said that the 16 villages are categorized into red zone because a dog positively-tested for rabies virus was found at those villages. In the meantime, the rabies cases in Klungkung are said to have been taking place since 2013. The cases continue to spread to several villages. The last case of rabies casualties afflicted a boy of elementary school student at Getakan village. However, Badiwangsa stated to have made elimination and vaccine administration to pet dogs of residents before the victim died. “Previously, no cases occurred here. The rabies case just emerged in 2013,” said Badiwangsa. What about the handling of rabies case in Klungkung? This Buleleng-origin official claimed to have made various efforts. One of them is focusing on the prevention by conducting vaccination and dog elimination at villages categorized into red zone. Moreover, according to him, the dog vaccine stock has no problem because Klungkung is helped by Bali Province with dog vaccine amounting to 3,600 dosages. However, Badiwangsa claimed that so far his party got disturbance related to prevention of rabies cases in Klungkung. Allegedly there were individuals from outside suspected of deliberately leaving a dog in Klungkung. Recently, Badiwangsa claimed to get information that there are unscrupulous people deliberately leaving a dog on Jalan Ngurah Rai near petrol station at night. “As the information I got two days ago there were people discarding dog there at night,” he said. Hit by tidal waves cemetery collapses, dike of villa gets eroded
AMLAPURA - Tidal waves in the past three days adversely affected the coastal areas of Purwakerti village, Abang subdistrict. Local cemetery area collapsed along with a number of graves. In the meantime, tens of meters of embankment next to a villa building also gets eroded after being hit by tidal waves. Headman of Purwakerti, Wayan Sentuni Artana, said on Tuesday (Jun. 30) that tidal waves at the coastal areas of the village have happened since Saturday night (Jun. 27). Ahead of full moon night, Wednesday (Jul. 1), the waves increasingly turned violent every night. As a result, almost half of the
cemetery of Tukad Besi customary village, Purwakerti, collapsed. “The coastline has regularly become the target of tidal waves. Abrasion has eroded the land area located about 100 meters from the beach,” he said. The cemetery land originally spreading on the area of approximately 1.5 hectares has now shrunk. Without getting immediate handling, he claimed to fear that more areas of the cemetery will collapse following the graves. The tidal waves also caused the occupants of the villa located just a few meters from the shoreline to be frightened lately. At least the lacing of tidal waves caused the
coastal protection dike made by the villa owner to get eroded. As a result, when the tide hits at night, the seawater intruded into the villa. Three villas are undergoing these effects making tens of meters of the embankment damaged. They include the Villa Casavelix, Villa Ashling and another villa being under construction. “The waves are very terrible, sir. It is the most severe because the seawater had intruded into the villa, said Komang Suartini, an employee of the Villa Casavelix, The villa owners are confused to deal with the tidal waves. Actually, when the villas were established a few years ago, the dis-
tance between the buildings and the edge of the beach was more than 100 meters. He said that the shoreline from Jemeluk, Lebah hamlet to seaside of Bias Lantang Kaler hamlet approximately 4 kilometers has long been eroded by the abrasion. The situation causes the waterfront area known as one of the tourist destinations to look chaotic. Overcoming this problem, especially the collapsed cemetery, his party claimed to have submitted a report to the Karangasem Regent I Wayan Geredeg and forwarded it to the Karangasem Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and Public Works. How-
ever, until now there has been no response. In addition, his party has also addressed the handling of the damage to the coastline through RPJMDes last year and has been included in the subdistrict development planning meeting. Unfortunately, there has been no follow up so far. Nevertheless, Sentuni Artana said that he will make another report to the regent of Karangasem so that the abrasion on Purwakerti Beach at the village can be addressed immediately. Temperatures in Paris were expected to hit 39 degrees Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) Wednesday afternoon. Southwest France saw temperatures reaching 42 C (107 F) and Cordoba in southern Spain recorded nearly 44 C (111 F). Paris authorities opened special air-conditioned rooms to the public and were checking on the elderly. France is particularly sensitive about the issue since thousands of people died in a heat wave in 2003. The last time Paris saw 40 C in July was in 1947, according to Meteo France forecaster Francois Gourand. August is hotter, but 2003 was the last time Paris saw 40 C in that month. At Paris’ Gare de Lyon train station, public announcements repeatedly reminded people to drink lots of water and not overexert. A few medics were deployed in case of emergency. “We have a lot of heat-wave days ahead of us,” Gourand said, noting that a wide swath of southern France from Toulouse to Lyon was looking at temperatures of up to 41 C until the middle of next week. British and Italian authorities were also on alert Wednesday. New Chinese law reinforces government control of cyberspace
BEIJING — China’s legislature passed sweeping legislation on Wednesday that reinforces government controls over cyberspace, as the nation’s leaders try to address what they see as growing threats to Chinese networks and national security. The vaguely worded National Security Law is one of several new regulatory moves by China that worry privacy advocates and have foreign businesses concerned about potential harm to their operations inside the country. The law calls for strengthened management over the web and tougher measures against online attacks, theft of secrets, and the spread of illegal or harmful information. It said core information technology, critical infrastructure and important systems and data must be “secure and controllable” in
order to protect China’s sovereignty over its cyberspace. The law offered no details on how China would achieve the goals, although a vast government Internet monitoring system has been in place for years. China says it is a major target of hacking and other cyberattacks, and the ruling Communist Party has expended vast efforts in blocking online content it deems subversive or illegal. Sugary drinks may cause 184,000 global deaths a year
WASHINGTON - Sodas and other sugary drinks may cause up to 184,000 deaths a year worldwide, according to a study published Monday in the journal Circulation. Billed as a first, the report analyzed the global risks of death due to diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancers linked to the consumption of sugary drinks. Researchers estimated that around 133,000 people died from diabetes due to the consumption
of what the report called “sugarsweetened beverages.” Around 45,000 people died globally from cardiovascular diseases arising from sugary drink consumption and 6,450 people died from cancers linked to the beverages, researchers estimated. “Many countries in the world
have a significant number of deaths occurring from a single dietary factor, sugar-sweetened beverages. It should be a global priority to substantially reduce or eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages from the diet,” said study author Dariush Mozaffarian from Tufts University in
Boston. Mexico had the highest death rate due to sugary beverages with a rate of 450 deaths per million adults, the report said. It was followed by the United States with 125 estimated deaths per million adults. Researchers also said the general quantity of sugar available in a nation correlated with the country’s frequency of diabe-
tes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. The report also found 76 percent of deaths related to soda and other sugary drink consumption occurred in low to middle income countries. New questions about why more women than men have Alzheimer’s
WASHINGTON — Nearly two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease are women, and now some scientists are questioning the long-held assumption that it’s just because they tend to live longer than men. What else may put woman at extra risk? Could it be genetics? Biological differences in how women age? Maybe even lifestyle factors? Finding out might affect treatments or preventive care. One worrisome hint is that research shows a notorious Alzheimer’srelated gene has a bigger impact on women than men. “There are enough biological questions pointing to increased risk in women that we need to delve into that and find out why,” said Maria Carrillo, chief science officer for the Alzheimer’s Association. Last month, the association brought 15 leading scientists together to ask what’s known about women’s risk. Later this summer, Carrillo said it plans to begin funding research to address some of the gaps. “There is a lot that is not understood and not known. It’s time we did something about it,” she added. A recent Alzheimer ’s Association report estimates that at age 65, women have about a 1 in 6 chance of developing Alzheimer’s during the rest of their lives, compared with a 1 in 11 chance for men. The tricky part is determining how much of the disparity is due to women’s longevity or other factors. “It is true that age is the greatest risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease,” said University of Southern California professor Roberta Diaz Brinton,
who presented data on gender differences at a meeting of the National Institutes of Health this year. But, she said, “on average, women live four or five years longer than men, and we know that Alzheimer’s is a disease that starts 20 years before the diagnosis.” That’s how early cellular damage can quietly begin. Brinton researches if menopause can be a tipping point that leaves certain women vulnerable. However it starts brewing, there’s some evidence that once Alzheimer’s is diagnosed, women may worsen faster; scans show more rapid shrinkage of certain brain areas. But gene research offers the most startling evidence of a sex difference. Stanford University researchers analyzed records of more than 8,000 people for a form of a gene named ApoE-4, long known to increase Alzheimer’s risk. Women who carry a copy of that gene variant were about twice as likely to eventually develop Alzheimer’s as women without the gene, while men’s risk was only slightly increased, Stanford’s Dr. Michael Greicius reported last year. It’s not clear why. It may be in how the gene interacts with estrogen, Brinton said. Amy Shives, 57, of Spokane, Washington state, recalls when her mother began showing symptoms of Alzheimer ’s. But it wasn’t until after her own diagnosis a few years ago that Shives looked up the gender statistics. “That was alarming,” said Shives, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, which struck at a younger-than-usual age and forced her retirement as a college
counselor. “The impact on our lives and that of our families is extraordinary.” Data from the long-running Framingham, Massachusetts, health study suggests that because more men die from heart disease in middle age, those who survive past 65 may have healthier hearts that in turn provide some brain

Years ago, a major study found that estrogen therapy after 65 might increase risk of dementia, although later research showed hormone re-

Estrogen helps regulate the brain’s metabolism, how it produces the energy for proper cognitive function, and it must switch to a less efficient backup method as estrogen plummets, she explained. GIANYAR - Monkey Forest attraction indeed has been well-known worldwide. In July, August and December, the number of tourists visiting this attraction can surely go beyond the visit to tourist attraction owned by the government of Gianyar like the Tirta Empul.

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

DENPASAR - Economic growth tending to slow down has a major impact on Bali’s tourism sector. It does not only decrease the purchasing power of people, but also their desire to travel. It can be seen from the domestic tourist visits declining greatly during this holiday season. “The growth of tourism has not been maximized in June. Both domestic and foreign travelers are not maximized. Hotel occupancy rate still ranges from 60 percent to 65 percent,” said Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Badung Chapter, I Gusti Ngurah Ray Suryawijaya, when asked for his confirmation. Actually, continued Ray, the hotel occupancy rate in June and
September usually reaches above 75 percent. Other than not having reached maximal occupancy, MICE tourism has not showed a significant improvement. His party asked the government to make tourism promotion more intensively, and resolutely implement the policy of free visas for 45 countries. As expected, it can increase the low hotel occupancy rate until September. “Tourism industry players cur-
rently must anticipate by improving efficiency and quality of service,” he continued. The most hazardous impact is in the event of layoffs in the tourism sector,” he said. Agung added that local government should intensify local tourism to curb the threat of layoffs. Moreover, Bali does not get a help from central government in the matter of infrastructure development to boost the economy. In other words, tourism becomes the only one leading sector for Bali. On the other hand, there is currently quite dramatic decrease in tourist arrival even though
national holiday is still going on. “We call on my colleagues in the tourism sector to encourage this condition and attempt not to lay off employees. Then, local government must make cooperation with other local governments to invite them to organize activities like meetings and others in Bali,” he continued. He argued that amid the difficult economic situation like today, it is impossible to rely on the public to travel because they would put priority on staples. On that account, it is only the government’s activities such as meetings in Bali that can be relied on to drive the domestic tourism growth.
