The actress and fashion icon is the daughter of renowned actor and producer Anil Kapoor. During her visit to Jerusalem she met local fans who recognized her, asked for her signature and took photos with her. Kapoor arrived in Israel as a guest of the Israeli tourism ministry and visited Jerusalem’s Old City where she toured the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and placed a note between the stones of the Western Wall. Agricultural sector in Badung disappearing fast

MANGUPURA - The agricultural sector in the district of Badung is shrinking fast due to the unstoppable expansion of tourism, this despite agriculture having been being lauded in the last electoral campaign. The Badung Forestry and Plantation Agency noted that farmland conversions increased from 9,984 hectares in 2014 to 10,006 hectares. As of May 2016 or within the period of just five months the Tourism Office recorded the increase occurred in non-star hotel to 471 units, 716 cottages and 47 condotels, while the number of star hotel remains 155 units. Head of the Badung Forestry and Plantation Agency, IGK Sudaratmaja, said the farmland conversion in Badung dominantly happens in North Kuta. Hundreds of hectares of farmland have been converted into tourist accommodations. “It mostly happened due to the impact of tourism development mainly in the tourist accommodation and in the area of North Kuta,” said IGK Sudaratmaja, as confirmed on Tuesday (May 31).

Amber Heard reports Depp domestic violence accusation to police LOS ANGELES - Actress Amber Heard has given a statement to Los Angeles police in which she accused estranged husband Johnny Depp of domestic violence, her lawyers said on Tuesday, a week after she filed for divorce and obtained a restraining order against Depp. Heard’s attorneys said in a statement that in an attempt to “protect her privacy and Johnny’s career” the actress initially declined to report to police a May 21 incident between her and Depp that she claimed left her with a bruised eye. “Johnny’s team has forced Amber to give a statement to the LAPD to set the record straight as to the true facts ...,” Heard’s lawyers Samantha Spector and Joseph P. Koenig said.

“Amber has suffered through years of physical and psychological abuse at the hands of Johnny,” they said. Representatives for Depp did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Officer Liliana Preciado declined to comment, citing privacy. Depp’s 17-year-old daughter Lily-Rose supported her father on Instagram, posting a photo captioning her father as “the sweetest most loving person I know.” Heard, 30, said in court papers filed in Los Angeles last week that Depp, 52, had been abusive to her throughout their relationship, culminating in an argument during which he hurled a cell phone at her face and shattered objects in her apartment.

Depp’s lawyer argued in a court document that Heard “is attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.” Judge Carl H. Moor granted a temporary restraining order requiring Depp to stay at least 100 yards away from Heard and move out of the couple’s shared downtown Los Angeles condominium. A hearing was scheduled for June 17. Heard, who will star in upcoming superhero ensemble “The Justice League Part One,” said she was seeking $50,000 a month for spousal support. UN warns 20,000 children are trapped in Iraq’s Fallujah

BAGHDAD — The U.N. children’s fund on Wednesday issued a stark warning to Iraqi troops and Islamic State militants in the battle for Fallujah to spare the children, the most vulnerable among the tens of thousands of civilians who remain trapped by the fighting for control of this city west of Baghdad. Backed by aerial support from the U.S.-led coalition and paramilitary forces mainly made up of Shiite militias, Iraqi government troops more than a week ago launched a military operation to recapture Fallujah which has been under control of the extremist group for more than two years. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, responded to the general view of factions in the Bali House of Representatives regarding the regional bylaw draft (Ranperda) on Tour Guides in the Plenary Session at the parliamentary building, Tuesday (May 31). In many cases, the governor expressed his agreement with the parliament. He just disagreed to one point regarding the addition to the regulation of the Tourism Ministerial Regulation No.13/2015 on the Standards of Tour Guide Services in the preamble. “I disagree because the substances or materials regulated in this regional bylaw draft or Ranperda is specifically regulating tour guides personally, not in terms of business entity,” said Pastika. He would look back a number of suggestions of the parliament. In this case the issuance of certificate of testing pass on the Balinese cultural knowledge and tour guide identification card (KTPP) should include the participation of the tourist guides or those extending their identification card. Then, the suggestion of domestic travelers that during their visit in Bali can use the services of local tour guides will be examined. “Domestic travelers are Indonesians. If they are foreign travelers, it’s clear that they should be replaced with local tour guide. In most cases, the domestic travelers come in small entourage,” said Pastika. Air pollution tied to high blood pressure risk

Buleleng Police anticipate distribution of marijuana and gorilla tobacco

GUANGZHOU - Short and long-term exposure to air pollution from vehicle exhaust or burning coal is associated with high blood pressure, according to a review of 17 studies. “Since the 1990s, a hypothesis of air pollution leading to hypertension risk was proposed by many researchers,” said senior author Tao Liu of the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Guangzhou, China. The researchers analyzed 17 studies of air pollution and hypertension, defined as blood pressure higher than 140/90 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). In total, the studies included more than 80,000 people with high blood pressure and more than 220,000 people without it. They found that short-term exposure to sulfur dioxide from burning fossil fuels and to particulates like dust and dirt in the air were associated with high blood pressure risk, as was long-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide, which comes from power plants and vehicle exhaust. Short-term exposure to ozone and carbon monoxide were not tied to blood pressure levels, as reported in the journal Hypertension. Air pollution can cause inflammation and oxidative stress which may lead to changes in the arteries, the authors write. “There is a linear relationship between air pollution and hypertension, which indicated that even a very low level of air pollution might induce hypertension risk,” Liu told Reuters Health by email. “Therefore, everyone should be concerned about the effects of air pollution on their blood pressure even if there is a very low air pollution level in their living environment.” “However, it is impossible to remove all of the air pollutants from the environments,” Liu said. The studies in this review tie pollution to high blood pressure but don’t prove that one causes the other, Liu said. More studies, especially multi-center studies, are needed to investigate a causal relationship between air pollution and high blood pressure, Liu said. “Without a clear mechanism we cannot conclude that pollution ‘causes’ hypertension,” said Dr. Gaetano Santulli of Columbia University Medical Center in New York, who was not part of the new study. “However, we should recall (going back to 1954) that epidemiological evaluations provided strong statistical support in linking cigarette smoking and cancer.” (rtr)

The distribution of gorilla tobacco with hallucinogenic effect in Buleleng has not been detected in some subdistrict areas. “Gorilla tobacco is a variant of the New Psychoactive Substance (NPS) which can bring in hallucinative and delusive effect (exaggerated fear to users—Ed),” he added. Various drugs with some variants are increasingly concerned. Other than gorilla tobacco, lately there are new derivatives of drugs such as the THJ-2201 and THJ-018 having been equally anticipated by the personnel of the Buleleng Police Narcotic Investigation Unit. However, the gorilla tobacco has not been classified into narcotics. “In the government regulation No.13/2014, this substance has not been included in narcotics. However, it has an effect like narcotic, such as the effects of sensation in the brain and the body feels stiff so that this effect is called gorilla,” he explained. He explained that gorilla tobacco has fairly stronger impact than marijuana in general. The users feel their body unconscious as if it did not move. It is said when users want to enjoy the thrill of the gorilla tobacco, they will use the tobacco in a cigarette. The selling price of gorilla tobacco is quite expensive namely IDR 100,000 per gram and in Buleleng police have not found similar thing. “Gorilla tobacco can improve blood sugar level in addition to the effects of hallucinations and delusions,” he explained. Hallucinative effect caused by the gorilla tobacco is being investigated by Buleleng Police Narcotic Investigation Unit as an effort to anticipate the circulation. Philippines’ Duterte denounced for defending killing of some journalists

DENPASAR - Hundreds of heavily armed police and plain-clothed officers from the Denpasar Police and the West Denpasar Police backed up by the Indonesia Military (TNI) strictly guarded the Denpasar District Court on Tuesday (May 31) as the court continued to the hearing of the violent clashed that occurred in Kerobokan Prison earlier this year. The court itself as also heavily guarded allowing the testimonials by witnesses and victims on Tuesday to run smoothly.

The hearing for the violent clashed that occurred last December 17, 2015 finally took place and was presided over by judge Achmad Petensili. Sitting as the defendants were Kadek Lingga Januarta, 21, I Putu Heri Saptrawan, 33, I Wayan Sumerta Antara, 27 and I Made Atmaja Eka Putra, 19. The court session on Tuesday scheduled the examination of victim witnesses Putu Diaskara Putra alias Putu Semal from Gianyar. Before the court session, witness Putu Semal explained that he had initially been in block D and was then taken by Robot (dead victim) along with four other colleagues to pick up a friend who had just been transferred from the prosecutor’s office to the prison. The victim along with his friends passed through prison’s meeting hall and saw that the defendants were gathered there. of the prison. However he and his friends did not suspect that they would be attacked by the occupants of block C. The violent incident happened in front of the meeting hall near block C. “As soon as we walked by we were attacked but managed to save ourselves. I was at the rear” said the witness. Putu Semal added that he had no reason to think that they would be attacked because there had never been any problem with this group. “I did not know what the problem was. I did not think they would attack because we did not know each other personally and there had been no friction before the incident”, explained the witness. Putu Semal was blindly beaten and two of his friends were killed in the accident. “Their were so many people in their group and some of them tried to stab and hit me. As I remember I was beaten,

asked if there was resistance at the time. The witness replied that he gave no resistance, that he was just focused on how to escape from the attack. “It was impossible for us to fight because we were suddenly attacked. We never thought we would be attacked” explained the witness. The witness said that he had suffered injuries to his head, legs and hands and that there was a medical report to prove it. The defendant’s attorney asked whether the witness forgave the defendants. “Personally I have no problem with the defendants as long as they are aware. Until now, I am still questioning why they hit me. I will certainly forgive them if they would like to explain what the reason for the attack was”, he said. The judge Achmad Peten Sili added that the defendants should apologize to the witness. The defendants then approached the witness and shook hands to apologize to Putu Semal.

In the heavily guarded court session the judge explained that the court actually disliked examining such cases. “I am concerned and sad. Why can you commit such actions amongst Balinese people. What could you get from it? I am very sad”, said the judge. The statement by the judge from NTT was responded to by victim witness Putu Semal: “I am sad too sir. I do not know anything but was beaten anyway. Personally I had no problems with them” he said. Hearing the witness’s testimony, the defendants did not argue but acknowledged that his testimony was true and they admitted to having beaten the witness. The judge then advised the defendants saying: “Do not just say sorry in the court session, but then commit another riot once you are release. Swiss declare Alps tamed as Gotthard rail tunnel opens

AMSTEG - Switzerland opens the world’s longest and deepest rail tunnel through the heart of the Alps on Wednesday in an engineering marvel that stands as a symbol of European unity at a time of increasing fragmentation. The 57.1-km (35.5 mile)-long Gotthard Base Tunnel, 17 years under construction and designed to last a century, is part of a 23 billion Swiss franc infrastructure project to speed passengers and cargo by rail under the mountain chain that divides Europe’s north and south. Typically Swiss, the project that federal transport office director Peter Fueglistaler called “a masterpiece of timing, cost and policy” came in on schedule and on budget. High-speed trains will whisk passengers in 17 minutes through a passage that took days until the first Alpine rail tunnel opened in 1882. Around 260 freight trains and 65 passenger trains will traverse the two-tube tunnel daily once final testing ends later this year. The Swiss, as a rule rail fanatics, are throwing a party to mark the

event that will draw the leaders of all its neighbouring countries in a show of European solidarity. “It is just part of the Swiss identity,” Fueglistaler said of the Swiss fondness for major engineering feats. “For us, conquering the Alps is like the Dutch exploring the oceans.” The tunnel along Europe’s main rail line that connects the ports of Rotterdam in the north to Genoa in the south snakes through the mountains as much as 2.3 km below daylight and through rock as hot as 46 degrees Celsius (114.8°F). The rail route goes over the pass now in a series of loops and tunnels. The new flat route means even heavy trains will need only one locomotive rather than two or three. But his comments about killing journalists have struck a nerve. About 175 journalists have been killed in the Philippines since 1986, ranking it among the most dangerous places to work in the news business. Duterte addressed reporters on Tuesday in the southern city of Davao, where his loud approval of hundreds of execution-style killings of drug users and criminals over nearly two decades helped propel him to the highest office. “Most of your are clean, but do not ever say all journalists are clean,” he said. “Just because you are a journalist, you are not exempted from assassination if you are a son of a bitch.” “... Most of those killed, to be frank, have done something. You won’t be killed if you don’t do anything wrong.” When a female journalist asked a question, he wolf-whistled at her. Ryan Rosuaro, head of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, said press freedom and murder were not joking matters. “It is appalling that President-elect Rodrigo Duterte should justify the murder of journalists in the country by playing the corruption card,” he said. Global stocks turn mostly lower on soft China factory data

SEOUL — Global stock markets turned mostly lower on Wednesday after reports on China’s manufacturing activity indicated lingering weaknesses in the world’s second-largest economy, and U.S. consumer confidence dropped for a second month. KEEPING SCORE: Britain’s FTSE 100 dropped 0.6 percent to 6,194.49 while Germany’s DAX fell 0.7 percent to 10,193.34. France’s CAC 40 slid 0.7 percent to 4,473.61. Futures augured a weak start on Wall Street. Dow futures lost 0.3 percent while S&P futures also fell 0.3 percent. CHINA DATA: Two surveys showed persisting weakness in China’s factory activity last month. An official index by the Chinese Federation of Logistics & Purchasing, based on a survey of factory purchasing managers came in at 50.1 in May. Numbers above 50 indicate expansion of factory activity while those below 50 indicate contraction. The private Caixin/Markit survey was more pessimistic with activity falling to 49.2 last month from 49.4 in April. ANALYST’S TAKE: “Overall, China’s economy has not been able to sustain the recovery it had in the first quarter and is in the process of bottoming out,” said Zhengsheng Zhong, director of macroeconomic analysis at CEBM Group. “The government still needs to make full use of proactive fiscal policy measures accompanied by prudent monetary policy to prevent the economy from slowing further.” U.S. CONSUMERS: Reports released on Tuesday showed U.S. consumer confidence fell in May for a second month and is now at the lowest level since November. The Conference Board said that its index of consumer confidence slipped to 92.6 from 94.7 in April as consumers remained cautious about the outlook for business and job market conditions. ASIA’S DAY: Asian stock markets began uneven but closed mostly lower. Japan’s Nikkei 225 finished 1.6 percent lower at 16,955.73 while South Korea’s Kospi inched down less than 0.1 percent to 1,982.72. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was down 0.3 percent to 20,760.98 while China’s Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.1 percent to 2,913.51. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 slumped 1 percent to finish at 5,323.20. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said in a wide-ranging report that it is increasingly pessimistic about the global outlook and cut its growth forecasts. Among the risks identified by the Paris-based economic agency, which represents the world’s most developed economies, was a potential British exit from the European Union, volatility in financial markets, and Europe’s inability to find a common response to its refugee flows. Above all, the OECD said in its Global Economic Outlook that weak growth risks becoming chronic. “This low growth trap involves a cycle in which diminished expectations become self-fulfilling,” said Angel Gurria, the OECD’s

secretary-general. According to the OECD, firms are too cautious to invest, are holding back innovation and productivity. As a result, households are getting more pessimistic about jobs and the future. The ensuing weaker consumer spending then feeds back into pessimism among companies, creating a vicious cycle. Though the U.S. economy has improved in recent years, the next biggest economy, China, is slowing. Because it’s a major consumer of raw materials and energy, as well as being a huge exporter and increasingly important consumer, concerns have grown over the state of the world economy. Elsewhere, the European economic recovery has failed to gain

much traction while Japan remains sluggish. And emerging markets are struggling to deal with volatile currencies, high debt and the crash in prices for goods they export — Brazil and Russia, for example, are in deep recessions. The OECD said countries have relied too much on central banks to stimulate demand and should instead look to strengthen public investment and make their economies more competitive through structural reforms. It is forecasting global growth of 3 percent this year and 3.3 percent next. Both are down 0.3 percentage point from its last set of forecasts in November. The OECD reiterated its view that a vote for a British exit from the EU later this month “would depress growth in Europe and elsewhere substantially.” It estimated that in the case of an EU exit, Britain’s economy could be 5 percent smaller by 2030 than if the country remained in the bloc.(ap)

French rail strike bites amid labour law standoff

BRUSSELS - Striking rail workers halted about half of all French train services on Wednesday in a dispute over working time as a standoff between the militant CGT union and the Socialist government over a proposed labour law reform dragged on. The SNCF state railway said six out of 10 high-speed TGV trains were running, along with one-third of other inter-city services and half of regional trains. Heavy flooding also cut some lines in central France and the rail link to Luxembourg. Eurostar train services to Britain were not affected, while 75 percent of trains to Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland were running. Three of the four rail unions called their members out on an open-ended strike over a planned reorganisation even though the government has intervened to press SNCF management to protect train drivers’ weekends off. Managers say that concession could make the heavily indebted company uncompetitive when it has to open up to private competition in 2020 under EU rules. SNCF said 17 percent of its staff were on strike, up slightly from a previous strike last week, and forecast similar levels of traffic for Thursday. The CGT is also on strike at oil refineries and one-fifth of petrol stations are short of fuel. The Socialist government played down the disruption and stuck to its refusal to withdraw the planned labour reform, designed to make hiring and firing easier and encourage negotiations on flexiblity at company level. “France loves to give this image of itself as a sort of permanent drama, but that’s not the reality. France is not at a standstill,” Jean-Marie Le Guen, secretary of state for relations with parliament, told Radio Classique. The government has pulled out its chequebook to settle a series of sectoral disputes this week in an effort to prevent them coalescing into a nationwide protest movement ahead of next week’s start of the Euro 2016 soccer tournament in France. CGT leader Philippe Martinez told LCP television his union had no intention of disrupting the soccer championship and urged the government to negotiate. Sp rt Benzema accuses Deschamps of bowing to racist pressure PARIS — Karim Benzema has accused Didier Deschamps of giving in to pressure from racists when the France coach decided not to include him in the squad for the European Championship. In an interview with Spanish sports newspaper Marca published Wednesday, Benzema said he does not believe that Deschamps is a racist, but that he “bowed to the pressure of a racist part of France.” Deschamps has been a long-time supporter of Benzema, who has been suspended from the national team because of his involvement in an extortion scam over a sex tape involving France teammate Mathieu Valbuena. “I would have liked to play for my country, but unfortunately that’s impossible,” Benzema said. “Missing the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was a setback, but the European Championship at home is even harder. This is one of the biggest disappointments I have had, without a doubt.” This latest off-the-field controversy is unlikely to improve Benzema’s already tarnished image in his own country. France’s junior minister for sports, Thierry Braillard, said on Twitter that Benzema’s statement is “unjustified and unacceptable. Total support to FFF (French football federation) and Didier Deschamps.” Benzema’s comments echoed those of former France international Eric Cantona, who said last week that Deschamps might have left out Benzema and Nice winger Hatem Ben Arfa on racial grounds. Ben Arfa scored 17 goals in 33 French league matches this season but was not selected in Deschamps’ group of players for the tournament starting in France on June 10. Deschamps had many offensive options at his disposal and picked six attacking players, including Antoine Griezmann, Dimitri Payet, Anthony Martial, Kingsley Coman, Olivier Giroud and AndrePierre Gignac. “Benzema is a great player. Ben Arfa is a great player,” Cantona told the Guardian newspaper. “But Deschamps, he has a really French name. Maybe he is the only one in France to have a truly French name. The party was the top vote-getter in regional and European elections last year, but maneuvering by traditional parties kept it from winning any governorships, and may keep Le Pen from the presidency. In addition to its core anti-immigration message, the party rails against what it calls the “Islamization” of France and wants France out of the euro and the European Union — though one of its major pulpits is the European Parliament, where it’s part of a far right bloc. “You have to know that in France the extremist party reached the second round in the last two elections,” Benzema said. The two were among six players competing for the final four spots available in the squad for the tournament in France. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque earlier Tuesday had announced a list with 19 players, leaving the final four spots open for those who played in Saturday’s Champions League final between Madrid and Atletico.
