LOS ANGELES - Why does actor Benedict Cumberbatch cut such a dash as British literary detective Sherlock Holmes? That’s elementary, according to genealogy website Ancestry.com. Cumberbatch is distantly related to author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created the brilliant but quirky sleuth some 130 years ago, the website said on Sunday. Cumberbatch, 40, star of the Emmy award-winning BBC TV series, “Sherlock,” is a 16th cousin, twice removed of Doyle.

The two are related through 14th century English nobleman John of Gaunt, who, according to records, was Cumberbatch’s 17th greatgrandfather and Conan Doyle’s 15th great-grandfather, Ancestry researchers said. John of Gaunt, born about 1340, was a son of England’s King Edward III, meaning that Cumberbatch and Conan Doyle also have a distant royal connection. “How rare that an actor in a major series has the chance to play a character created by a relative, especially one as iconic as Sherlock

Holmes,” said Jennifer Utley, a family historian at Ancestry. “Sherlock,” a modern twist on the life and investigations of the 19th century London detective, first aired in 2010 and returns for its fourth series on Sunday on both U.S. and British television. The show, in which Cumberbatch plays Holmes as a haughty, socially inept detective to Martin Freeman’s calm, practical Dr. John Watson, is the most popular TV drama in Britain, according to ratings data, and has been sold to 180 other countries. Tourist boat fire off Indonesia leaves 23 dead JAKARTA - At least 23 people have been killed and dozens rescued after a blaze ripped through a boat carrying tourists to Indonesian islands.nThe craft was heading to islands north of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, when it caught fire with around 230 people on board. Another 22 people needed hospital treatment after being injured, the Thousand Island police said. One survivor told local media: “Fifteen minutes after the boat set sail, people at the back of the boat started making noise. Then I saw smoke. There was more and more, the boat was crowded and people were fighting for life jackets.” Another passenger said: “When we wanted to go, I panicked because I saw my son jump off the boat without a (life jacket) because

somebody else had taken it.” Nearby fishermen managed to get many of the survivors out of the water. The head of Jakarta’s search and rescue agency, Hendra Sudirman, said 98 people had been rescued. A search involving 10 ships has been launched to try to find 17 people still missing. All those on board are believed to have been Indonesian. The fire broke out aboard the Zahro Express about 15 minutes after it left Muara Angke port in north Jakarta early on Sunday. The cause

of the blaze has not been confirmed, although one police source said it may have been a short circuit on the boat’s power generator. Sea accidents are frequent in Indonesia - a sprawling archipelago - with vessels often overloaded and having too few life jackets on boat. Such measure is eventually expected to reduce unemployment rate in Bangli,” he said. Sukarta explained that poverty and quality of population are integrated variable that result in unemployment. It is an inseparable unity. For this reason, his agency wanted to develop it to reduce unemployment rate in Bangli district. “We admit that unemployment rate in Bangli remains high. Moreover, the job opportunities here are very scarce. However, the need of jobseekers wishing to look for job vacancy outside the region will be facilitated through the LPKS. It is capable of improving the quality of workers so that they are acceptable to work outside pursuant to their respective expertise. Thus, the unemployed people could eventually work. By doing so, the unemployment rate will decline,” said Sukarta. He said that currently it has about 11 institutions and all of them have owned license. They consist of six institutions of cruise and hotel training, three institutions of apprenticeship to Japan and two institutions of cosmetology and beauty training. “Of the 11 institutions owned, three institutions have been accredited, namely the Mediterranean specialized in hospitality and overseas job placement, Dwi Pahara institution and Bulan Palapa institution for apprenticeship to Japan. In 2017, we schedule to include five institutions to be accredited namely cruise ship training (3 institutions), beauty training (3 institutions) and apprenticeship to Japan (1 institution) and in 2018 we will add three new institutions namely the Atlantik, Samudra and beauty salon in Kintamani,” he said. Tamu Lhosar celebrations

KATHMANDU - The Gurung community people in Nepal are referred to as Tamu and Lhosar means New Year. Nepal, being rich in cultural diversity celebrates an array of festival throughout the year. Nepal is also known as the world of distinctly vibrant colorful festivals. Tamu Lhosar marks the beginning of Tambu Sambat(Gurung Calendar Year) or a New year for gurung community. Tamu Lhosar is celebrated on every 15th Poush (December or January). Tamu Lhosar 2015 was celebrated on December 30th, with much pomp and grandeur across the nation. Fuel consumption in Bali increases 15 percent

DENPASAR - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ignatius Jonan, made a visit to Sanggaran Fuel Terminal on Wednesday (Dec. 28). He appreciated to the efforts of Pertamina in securing supplies of fuel and LPG during Christmas holidays in 2016 and New Year 2017. “We see that the conditions here until the end of the year are safe and not alarming,” he said after the field visit to the Sanggaran fuel terminal. Security of the fuel and LPG supply has become important especially during the current holiday period. Moreover, Bali is an international tourist destination, so that fuel and LPG become the main

economic driving force. At the same time, the Marketing Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Muchammad Iskandar, said that the national fuel stock is currently at a very safe level for 22 to 27 days. “We have to anticipate if there is an increase in consumption during the celebration of Christmas and New Year,” he added.

In the meantime, especially for Bali, the increase in consumption is predicted to happen to some products such as Pertalite with an estimated increase of 15 percent when compared to the normal conditions reaching 406 KL per day. Similar increase is also predicted to occur in consumption of Pertamax (12 percent) and Premium (7 percent). The average daily consumption of Premium amounted to 1,481 KL. Marketing Branch Manager of Bali and NTB, I Ketut Permadi Aryakuumara, explained that based on monitoring until December 27,

2016, the fuel consumption was monitored to be normal and could be handled well. “It happened because most people celebrated Christmas first and then took holidays. Difference in consumption can usually be known after the New Year holiday,” he said. In the meantime, the 3-kg LPG is estimated to increase by 13 percent above the average normal consumption of around 13,495 MT to 15,281 MT. This increase was driven by the surges of cooking activities during the holidays. Other than fuel and LPG, Pertamina also

attempted to secure the supply of aviation fuel. Moreover, during the holidays many airlines added extra flights to accommodate the surge of passengers. “We estimate the rise in aviation fuel consumption of about 10 percent of the average of the normal consumption reaching 2,000 KL per day. During this holiday up to December 27, the highest consumption occurred on December 23 reaching 2,189 KL per day. We will continue to monitor and ensure that aviation fuel stock is safe,” he said. To anticipate future flood

Farmers at Pancasari advised to fix environmental vegetation

SINGARAJA - Floods hitting the agricultural area of Pancasari village, Sukasada, have caused losses worth billions of rupiahs. One of the causes of the disaster is the change of vegetation in the upstream region. In response to this, farmers are encouraged to be more careful in cultivating commodities The Head of the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said that one of the causes of the floods destroying farmland was the reduction of hydrological plants in the upstream region. The whole land is planted with vegetables by farmers with the intent to get faster results. “Now, the conditions are different. Vegetation has changed the environment,” he said when met directly at his office on Thursday (Dec. 29). To prevent the disaster from recurring, he appealed to farmers in order they want to make improvement to the environment’s vegetation. One of the ways is by planting commodities more carefully. In other words, the existing land is not entirely planted with the same commodities, but also filled with other commodities having two functions, namely hydrological and production function. The more essential is that farmers are also asked to prepare the land in accordance with technical aspects where it is equipped with terraces and em-

bankments on the edges. “Actually, farmers have understood it but due to a greater importance, wishing to get harvest quickly, the vegetation is forgotten. We do hope this can be changed and there should be corrective measures,” he said. In the meantime, in addressing to the losses suffered by farmers, his agency can only attempt to provide seed aid in 2017. The fund is attempted to source from the amended regional budget. “Our agency has no full recovery fund. In the amended regional budget 2017 will be attempted to make improvement activities pursuant to the existing programs in agriculture, such as provision of seeds,” added Swatantra. As published previously, after the land was hit by floods, farmers at Pancasari chose to delay planting vegetables. They worried for fear of a similar disaster will strike again. In the palm-leaf manuscript of Arya Wang Bang Sidemen is stated that Ki Pasek Katrangan and other companions left Aan in Caka year 1450 or 1528 AD to accompany the departure of I Gusti Kacang Dawa. At that time the Aan residents were carrying the headdress of Panji which is a magic sign of Ki Pasek Katrangan. Until now the headdress remains to be stored at Kedisan. It is made sacred and placed at clan temple of Aan residents. This inscription states if the Gambuh art at Kedisan has existed since the days of empire whose written evidence can be found in the chronogram telling about the formation of Kedisan village. Local villagers believe that historically gambuh of Kedisan has nothing to do with and palaces in other areas, except for Kedisan Palace. Kedisan palace is the home to senior figures (royal figures) coming to Kedisan

while carrying the Panji art headdress with Ki Pasek Katrangan. Gambuh of Kedisan was not established in the royal territory, but was autodidactically grew and developed by the people who did like the gambuh art of Kedisan. This gambuh always paid devotional performance at Gianyar Palace, Ubud Palace, and other community activities when there is a religious ceremony. BEIJING - China’s economy is on a steady growth path as 2016 ends, supported by a housing boom and billions in government investment, but the mood of policymakers is more cautious than celebratory as they face “complexity” in the new year. Indonesian agricultural programs deemed successful in 2016

JAKARTA - One of the aims of the Indonesian governments programs in 2016 was to advance the agricultural sector, in order to regain the countrys self-sufficiency in rice, as in the past. 39 killed in Istanbul nightclub gun attack, manhunt under way

ISTANBUL - A lone gunman opened fire on New Year revellers at a packed nightclub on the shores of Istanbul’s Bosphorus waterway on Sunday killing at least 39 people, including many foreigners, then fled the scene. Some people jumped into the Bosphorus waters to save themselves after the attacker opened fire at random in the Reina nightclub just an hour into the new year. Officials spoke of a single attacker but some reports, including on social media, suggested there may have been more, at least one of them wearing a Santa Claus costume which he ditched in order to escape. The attack shook NATO member Turkey as it tries to recover from a failed July coup and a series of deadly bombings in cities including Istanbul and the capital Ankara, some blamed on Islamic State and others claimed by Kurdish militants. Security services had been on alert across Europe for new year celebrations following an attack on a Christmas market in Berlin that killed 12 people. Only days ago, an online message from a pro-Islamic State group called for attacks by

“lone wolves” on “celebrations, gatherings and clubs”. The Hurriyet newspaper cited witnesses as saying the attackers shouted in Arabic as they opened fire at Reina. “We were having fun. All of a sudden people started to run. My husband said don’t be afraid, and he jumped on me. People ran over me. My husband was hit in three places,” one club-goer, Sinem Uyanik, told the newspaper. “I managed to push through and get out, it was terrible,” she said, describing seeing people soaked in blood. Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said 15 or 16 of those killed were foreigners but that only 21 of the bodies had so far been identified. He said 69 people were in hospital, four of them in a critical condition. “A manhunt for the terrorist is underway. Police have launched operations. We hope the attacker

Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin said the attacker had used a “long-range weapon” to “brutally and savagely” fire on people, apparently referring to some form of assault rifle. Italy to seek to track down and deport migrants with no right to stay ROME - Italy will seek to deport more migrants who have no right to be in the country and will open new detention centres to hold them before their expulsion, according to a written directive and a ministry source. Police chief Franco Gabrielli sent a two-page directive to stations across the country on Friday ordering them to increase efforts to identify and deport migrants a week after Berlin Christmas market attacker Anis Amri was shot dead near Milan. The directive, seen by Reuters, says police should take “extraordinary action” before the “growing migratory pressure in an international context marked by instability and threats” to “control and remove irregular foreigners.” Interior Minister Marco Minniti plans to open several new detention centres that hold migrants prior to their expulsion, a ministry source said, in line with repeated requests by European Union partners. The tougher migrant stance, which several Italian papers ran on their front pages on Saturday, is the first major policy change made by Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni’s government since it took power in mid-December, and comes on the heels of a record year of boat migrant arrivals. It also comes less than a month

after the Berlin truck attack by Amri that killed 12, including an Italian woman. The Tunisian Amri came to Italy by boat in 2011. Italy later tried without success to deport him back to Tunisia. He was then released from a detention centre and ordered to leave the country in 2015. LAS VEGAS - Ronda Rousey’s effort to reclaim her UFC bantamweight title ended in spectacular failure as champion Amanda Nunes stopped her after just 48 seconds of the first round of their title fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Friday. In the co-main event, challenger Cody Garbrandt scored a thrilling unanimous decision victory over Dominick Cruz in another stunning upset to claim the men’s bantamweight belt. Valencia coach Cesare Prandelli resigns after 3 months

VALENCIA — Valencia manager Cesare Prandelli stepped down on Friday, just three months after taking charge of the struggling Spanish team. Valencia said that the former Italy national coach had presented “his irrevocable resignation as the first team manager.” The 59-year-old Prandelli leaves the team in 17th place, one spot above the Spanish league’s relegation zone. It has a game in hand, albeit against league leader Real Madrid. Shortly after announcing Prandelli’s departure, Valencia issued a separate statement saying that the Italian had “presented his resignation in a surprising manner and at a delicate moment given the team’s difficult situation.” The club said his “decision is even more unexpected at this time, when the winter transfer market is about to open (in January) and the club is working on options to reinforce the team.” Prandelli debuted with a 2-1 victory at Sporting Gijon after taking over from the fired Pako Ayerstaran, but Valencia went winless in seven league matches. However, it did beat Leganes in the round-of-32 of the Copa del Rey. Team official Salvador “Voro” Gonzalez will once again take over as interim coach. With Voro as caretaker coach after Ayestaran’s exit in September, the team won two matches and lost one. Valencia is the last team other than Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid to win the league title — in 2004. But it has struggled to find a coach ever since the end of Unai Emery’s four-year stint in 2012. Valencia has had eight different head coaches since then, a list that includes Ernesto Valverde, Nuno Espirito Santo and Gary Neville. The team’s poor season led to club president Layhoon Chan, who runs the top-tier side for Singaporean owner Peter Lim, to apologize to the club’s fans last weekend. (ap)

Gray hits hat trick as Burnley beats Sunderland 4-1
