LOS ANGELES - “Star Wars” fans got their first glimpse Friday of the space saga’s long-awaited new film -- including a controversial new-look lightsaber -- but still have to wait a year for the movie itself. ships are back. The Millennium Falcon, the famed spaceship of smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his hairy first mate Chewbacca, is seen looping and skimming a planet, preparing for combat with the Empire’s TIE fighters. The X-wing fighters of the Rebel Alliance are also seen. “Star Wars” has attracted generations of loyal fans ever since the first film arrived in 1977 recounting the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Solo and Darth Vader. Filming began in Britain in May on Episode VII. Original cast members Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker will star in the new film, along with several newcomers including Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o. Other cast members include veteran actor Max von Sydow, “Girls” star Adam Driver, motion-capture expert Andy Serkis and “Harry Potter” veteran Domhnall Gleeson. The new trailer did not include footage of any of the main veteran characters, but did include glimpses of new British cast member John Boyega, clad as a Stormtrooper and racing across a desert landscape. The original 1977-83 trilogy -- “Star Wars,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi -- “ was followed by a prequel trilogy between 1999 and 2005: “The Phantom Menace,” “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith.” The two previous trilogies inspired spin-off books, comics, toys, videogames and cartoons -- earning $4.4 billion. Disney shelled out $4 billion to buy “Star Wars” founder George Lucas’s Lucasfilm in October 2012.

Madonna on Thursday launched a 50-bed pediatrics ward at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in the commercial capital Blantyre. care unit in the country. Former Malawi President Joyce Banda had stripped Madonna of her VIP status last year by forcing the singer to check into her private jet as an ordinary passenger. New President Peter Mutharika has restored the singer’s VIP status. The president’s spokesman said the country appreciates Madonna’s charity work. Madonna helps fund a number of charities — including orphanages, schools and medical facilities — in Malawi.

BANGLI – The Batur caldera region in Kintamani is prone to avalanches, especially during heavy rains, which have been hitting Bangli over the past few days. In anticipation of such a disaster, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Bangli has re-issued a circular on disaster awareness. Chief Executive of the BPBD Bangli, Wayan Sugiarta, confirmed on Friday (Nov 28) that the government regularly distributes the circular on disasters preparedness during the rainy season. The circular is addressed to the disaster mitigation agency, the military and police authorities, and also to heads of the community. In the document, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Bangli asks the entire community to be alert to various disasters that tend to occur during heavy rains. “Basically, we remind the community and village authorities to be careful and vigilant against various disasters during rainy season,” said Sugiarta. Other than issuing the circular, his party had also mapped the avalanche points in Bangli County. To map the region, his party was assisted by a team of geology experts and the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency of the province of Bali. According to the avalanche mapping, the areas at risk are divided into three levels, namely the heavy, medium and light risk of avalanche. The regions with a high risk of avalanche are spread across the subdistrict of Kintamani such as along the Batur caldera and some villages in the northern region of Kintamani including Subaya. For the region of Bangli, Susut and Tembuku have a light risk of avalanche. To further strengthen public awareness, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency of Bangli regularly disseminates disaster alerts to villages. In addition to awareness campaigns, his party also continues to intensify training on the handling of avalanche occurances. As a result, when disaster strikes, everyone knows what to do. (ina)

Buleleng ready to send apprentice to Japan

SINGARAJA - Changes in lifestyle and the needs of the community make land conversion unavoidable. This is a reality in different regions of Bali, and Buleleng County is no exception. By and large, farmers do not feel the need to convert arable land into residential buildings in part because they do not have the authority to do so as few farmers in Buleleng own their land- most are sharecroppers. Bali Post Landowners are the ones who have full rights to manage or sell their land. The Head of the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said, that when agricultural land no longer produces profits, land-owners often tend to transform their agricultural land into rental shops or other productive buildings. “As we can see, landowners prefer building shops to farming. They rent these shops, usually by yearly contract. Of course, this is very tempting because it immediately results in profits,” he said. The agency was still waiting for

the implementation of the Regional Bylaw on Spatial Plan (RTRW) for Buleleng, drafted in 2013. Once the regional bylaw had been issued, it is expected to reduce real estate development and help to maintain agricultural land. Based on the data at the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency for 1992-2012, land conversion reached 1,103 hectares, or approximately 10 percent of the total agricultural land in Buleleng, namely 11,039 hectares. Some areas in Buleleng have un-

dergone high rates of land conversion such as in Seririt, Banjar and Sawan. Most of the lands were converted from farming into residential or for housing purposes. “Most land conversions are intended for residential purposes. However this is not always the case as we saw when several hectares of paddy fields were converted into vineyard, as is often happening in Banjar subdistrict. Many residents have switched professions becoming grape growers as this is considered a promising field.” he said. (kmb34)

The Head of the Buleleng Manpower and Resettlement Agency has resumed cooperation with Japan in the form of an apprenticeship program in Japan, after it was interrupted last year. The Head of the Manpower and Resettlement Agency, Ni Made Dwi Priyanti Putri Koriawan, said on Friday (Nov 28) that through the potential manpower of Buleleng has been given another chance to work overseas in 2015. She said that sending apprentices to Japan for the program had been interrupted in 2014, due to a breach of contract committed by the apprentices “We have been lobbying the Japanese organizers for Buleleng County to be given another chance, and we finally succeeded” said Dwi Priyanti. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

DENPASAR - The regional police command in Bali will deploy its forces to secure the national congress of Golkar Party scheduled to be opened on Sunday evening and to last until December 3 to elect party’s next leader.

Greece reacted furiously, saying such statements “are offending the religious feeling of millions of Christians.” The Turkish government has long been accused by its secular opponents of forcing Islamic values on the predominantly Muslim but strictly secular country.

Japan’s traditional hand-made Washi paper along with Burundi’s ritual dance of the royal drum too were among 18 traditions or cultural practices added to the prestigious list aimed at protecting endangered traditions. “It may be a drop in the ocean but we are moving ahead bit by bit. Countries are realising that their heritage is important to all of humanity,” Cecile Duvelle, who runs UNESCO’s intangible heritage section told AFP. She said the list was “about identity not tourism.” Brazil’s Capoeira, which is a fight and also a dance, was chosen because “it also functions as an affirmation of mutual respect between communities.” Chile’s Bailes Chinos, a brotherhood of musicians who dance, sing and make music, “function as a model for social integration and cohesion,” UNESCO said.

In the thanksgiving feast, Puspayoga invited people to enjoy jinggo rice and lawar rice denoting the typical Balinese cuisine. Before hosting the modest dinner, Puspayoga told that after inaugurated as a minister, he had no time to go home. Therefore, that night was taken advantage to maintain the social relationship. “It was very crowded as thousands of people joined the feast,” said Chairman of the PDI-P Denpasar, Gusti Ngurah Gede. He added that Puspayoga was the native to Bali being worthy to become a minister. “It is a mandatory where a native to Bali was entrusted. His position as the Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs is very appropriate. During his leadership as a mayor for two periods and the deputy governor he already paid great attention to democratic economy, especially in small businesses,” he said while pointing out the evidence of his simplicity to invite the community to eat jinggo rice. Ngurah Puspayoga, created a breakthrough program by teaming up with notaries and the land deed maker (PPAT) in providing outreach and business development programs. With the MoU signed last November 21, the cooperative activists were expected to promptly submit their deed because the difficulties they had previously faced, have now been eliminated. In the MoU it was even agreed that the submission of establishment deeds would be free of charge “In addition to being free, the first 10 cooperatives to register will be given incentive funds worth IDR 2.5 million. The process is free and provides incentive funding” said Ngurah Puspayoga, Friday (Nov 28). Puspayoga accompanied by the

BANGKOK — Thailand’s Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn has asked the government to strip his wife’s family of their royally issued surname, the latest development in a high-profile crackdown that involves senior members of the police force. The move came after at least three relatives of the crown prince’s wife, Princess Srirasm, were arrested last week as part of the corruption probe. The probe has attracted national attention in Thailand, where the private lives of the royal family are kept discreet. But many questions remain unanswered, primarily because of strict lese majeste laws that carry a penalty of up to 15 years in prison for insulting the monarchy. In a letter dated Friday but released over the weekend, the crown prince ordered the “cancellation of the royally bestowed family name ‘Akrapongpreecha,’” which was issued after the pair married in 2001. The brief letter, which was sent to the Interior Ministry, gave no explanation for the action. National police spokesman Lt. Gen. Prawut Thavornsiri confirmed the letter’s authenticity. JAKARTA - Indonesian rights groups Saturday slammed the government’s decision to grant parole to the convicted murderer of a prominent human rights activist poisoned during a flight ten years ago. Pollycarpus Priyanto was serving a 14 year jail term for killing Munir Said Thalib by arsenic poisoning on a national carrier Garuda flight from Jakarta to Amsterdam via Singapore in 2004. Priyanto was granted parole on November 13 after eight years, said Marselina Budiningsih, the warden of Sukamiskin prison in Bandung, 150 kilometres (93 miles) southeast of Jakarta. The prison refused to disclose when he will be released. Several rights groups “regretted” the decision to grant the parole in the high-profile murder case because even though involve-

ment of the State Intelligence Agency in the operation to kill Munir has been proven in court, the mastermind has not been punished. In 2008, a court cleared a former deputy head of the country’s spy agency of masterminding the murder. “The parole destroyed the sense of justice and democratisation in Indonesia,” said Choirul Anam, the lawyer of Munir’s wife. PARIS — Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s penalty was enough to give Paris Saint-Germain a 1-0 win over Nice on Saturday for its ninth straight win in all competitions, although coach Laurent Blanc lamented that his team’s performance was “very average.” Ibrahimovic continued his return to form with his second goal in a week to help a scrappy PSG stay within one point of French league leader Marseille. “We’re hanging in there, we’re picking up points. We’ve won nine in a row, after all, and a lot of clubs would like to be in our position,” Blanc said. “We’re certainly very average in terms of how we’re playing, but in terms of points we’re doing pretty well. The 33-year-old Ibrahimovic has scored an array of spectacular goals during a distinguished career and he almost added another. PSG is unbeaten in 21 games this season and has not lost since a 2-1 home defeat to Rennes on May 7. With Nice gaining in confidence, a draw seemed increasingly likely, and left back Jordan Amavi hit the post with a header from a free kick with 10 minutes to go. “We finished the first half better and we started the second half better. It’s encouraging to have played well for 50 minutes, it’s a pity we weren’t rewarded,” Nice coach Claude Puel said. “We’re a bit frustrated, disappointed, because we wanted to get a point.
