Japan’s Prince Akishino has said the country should look to setting a retirement age for its emperor, just days after his increasingly frail father was discharged from a lengthy hospital stay. The younger son of the royal couple, who is second in line to the throne, was voicing a rare public opinion to reporters ahead of his own 46th birthday. “I think it will become necessary,” he said, when asked by a reporter to comment on an idea of setting a retirement age for Japanese emperors. The comment, published in the Japanese press on Wednesday, came after his 77-year-old father, Akihito, resumed public duties following a 19-day stay in hospital, where he was treated for bronchial pneumonia and fever. “When you pass a certain age, it gradually becomes difficult for people to do various things. I think it is an idea” to set a retirement age, Akishino said, calling for “more discussion” of the issue. Japan’s royals rarely comment
on public or political matters, including those touching on the affairs of their own cloistered family. But Akishino’s remark comes as Japan is exploring ways to maintain the staid household in modern times. Akishino’s son, Hisahito, 5, is the first male born to the imperial family since Akishino himself, a cause for concern among traditionalists who support the maleonly succession rule. Since being stripped of his semi-divine status in the aftermath of World War II, Japan’s emperor has played a largely ceremonial role in public life as the titular head of state, but is held in deep respect by his people. Akihito underwent surgery for prostate cancer in 2003, and still receives treatment. The emperor did not attend a welcome ceremony this month for the visiting king and queen of Bhutan, the first time he has missed a meeting with a state guest since he ascended to the throne in 1989 following the death of his father Hirohito.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbulâ€?, long ags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjorâ€?, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BANDUNG - The West Java Batik Foundation (YBJB) is planning to set up a Batik Academy to train and prepare Batik professionals among youths. “The West Java Batik Academy will train batik sector professionals for the industrial sector,” said the Foundation`s chairman Komarudin Hudiya here Tuesday. The vocational institute would be established in 2012 and admit 100 students for every course. Students would undergo a three months batik training and were expected to establish their own batik business after graduating. “We are targeting youths from all over West Java in the hope they can set up a batik business of their own after they return to their respective regions,” said Komarudin. A batik academy was necessary to ensure regeneration in the industry`s players and its continuity over time, he said. The problems being faced by batik artisans in Indonesia included the absence of a regeneration process with present craftsmen lacking likely succes-
sors and some craftsmen even having to stop their activity due to lack of assistant manpower. “Regeneration is not the only problem faced by batik artisan, they are also need to encourage the market, because batik printing invasion has hit the traditional batik industry pretty hard,” he said. Furthermore, the establishment of the Batik Academy is done as an effort to increase production of West Java`s batik that had been stagnated due to lack of development. “The batik market is still good, although it was booming in 2009. Meanwhile, I Gusti Ngurah Wiranatha, head of Bali province`s forestry office, said ecological studies had shown that geothermal exploration activity in Bedugul`s conservation forest area would have an impact on other aspects of the region`s environment because the Bedgul forests were the culmination point of the region`s entire ecosystem. “Technically, geothermal explorations in the area are not possible,� he said. (Rice Flour Cake with Palm Sugar) Overview: There are a couple of variations on this popular cake, which can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. It is normally served at room temperature, but can also be served warm topped with coconut milk. Another variations are to add ripe diced jackfruits (or substitute with sultanas) after the rice is partially cooked. Ingredients: 1 cup glutinous white rice 1 cup water 1 pandan leaf ½ cup palm sugar syrup Ÿ cup thick coconut milk Pinch of salt Preparation: Rinse rice very well under running water for 2 minutes and soak for 4 hours. Rinse again until water becomes clear. Place rice, 1 cup of water and pandan leaf in rice cooker or steamer and cook for approx 20 minutes, or until liquid has evaporated. Add palm sugar syrup, coconut milk and salt, and steam for 15 minutes. Spread rice evenly 2.5 cm thick on tray and allow to cool to room temperature. Wet a sharp knife with warm and cut into even squares to serve. Helpful hint: to speed up the soaking process, pour boiling water over the rice and let stand for 1 hour. Drain, then add another lot of boiling water and soak for another 30 minutes. South Korean electronics giant Samsung Wednesday won its appeal against a temporary ban on sales of its Galaxy tablet device in Australia, a rare victory in its legal tussle with rival Apple. The Sydney courtroom battle is part of a wider global war in which two of the world’s biggest technology companies are vying for supremacy in the US$100 billion market for tablet computers and smartphones. The Federal Court of Australia in Sydney lifted the ban on the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 ahead of a full hearing on claims from the US giant that the device copies its iPad computer. But Apple immediately won a stay of orders, meaning that Samsung will not be able to sell the Galaxy in Australia before 0500 GMT Friday. “The appeal will be allowed,” the judgment by Justice John Dowsett, Justice Lindsay Foster and Justice David Yates concluded. “Samsung will be permitted to launch the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia provided it keeps accounts of all transactions involving that device in Australia or originating from Australia.” Samsung Electronics Australia said it was pleased with the decision. “We believe the ruling clearly affirms that Apple’s legal claims lack merit,” it said in a
statement issued from Seoul, adding that it would comment shortly on the market availability of the tablet in Australia. The Federal Court granted an interim order against the sale of the Galaxy 10.1 in October, ruling that Apple had established a prima facie case that the South Korean company had breached touchscreen technology copyrights. But in reversing this decision, the court said there was “a real and substantial prospect” the supply of the Galaxy would not infringe an Australian patent relating to the touchscreen, one of several on which Apple had sought the temporary ban. “We have referred to a number of difficulties that confront Apple in making good its case on infringement. It may well be that, on a final hearing, Apple will meet these difficulties. But difficulties they are,” they said. They said while the case was open to be argued, they were doubtful of whether Apple had established a prima facie case on that particular claim. LONDON — The newspaper coverage was troubling: London’s huge international showcase was beset by planning problems, local opposition and labor woes — and the transportation was a mess. It sounds like the 2012 Olympics, but this was the Great Exhibition of 1851 generating stories of late trains, unscrupulous landlords and dangerous overcrowding. Coverage of the event is found in 4 million pages of newspapers from the 18th and 19th centuries being made available online Tuesday by
the British Library, in what head of newspapers Ed King calls “a digital Aladdin’s Cave” for researchers. The online archive is a partnership between the library and digital publishing firm Brightsolid, which has been scanning 8,000 pages a day from the library’s vast periodical archive for the past year and plans to digitize 40 million pages over the next decade. A glance at the stories of crime and scandal shows some things haven’t changed — including grumbling letter-writers complaining about disruption caused by the 1851 exhibition, held inside the specially built Crystal Palace in London’s Hyde Park.

The vast majority of the British Library’s 750 million pages of newspapers — the largest collection in the world — are currently available only on microfilm or bound in bulky volumes at a newspaper archive in north London, where the yellowing journals cover 20 miles (32 kilometers) of shelves. “We’ve got 200 years of newspapers locked away,” King said. “We’re trying to open it up to a wider audience.” There will be a cost to download articles online, though they can be accessed for free at the library’s London reading rooms. Nearly three quarters of the 1.2 million Americans with HIV do not have their infection under control, raising the risk of death from AIDS and transmission to others, said a US study on Tuesday. One in five people with human immunodeficiency virus are unaware that they have the disease, added the report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, released ahead of World AIDS Day on December 1. Among people who know their HIV status is positive, only about half (51 percent) get ongoing medical treatment, said the CDC’s Vital Signs report. Of all people in the United States who have HIV, whether they know it or not, 36 percent take antiretroviral therapy and 28 percent have a low amount of the virus in their body. “The HIV crisis in America is far from over,” Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s Division of HIV/ AIDS Prevention, told reporters. “Today’s Vital Signs shows that closing the gaps in testing, care and treatment will all be essential to slowing or reversing the US HIV epidemic.” The CDC defines a viral load as “suppressed” if a person has less
than 200 copies of blood-borne virus per milliliter of blood. Treatment with antiretroviral drugs has been shown to suppress levels of the virus in 77 percent of people who follow the regimen, and studies have shown it can cut the risk of transmission to a partner by 96 percent. But while new cases of HIV have leveled off at about 50,000 in the United States each year, with 16,000 people dying annually of AIDS, more must be done to make sure people get tested and treated, authorities said. “We are in a time of new hope for stopping HIV, and this week’s World AIDS Day is a time to acknowledge that,” CDC director Thomas Frieden said, urging a new push by all levels of government. “The bottom line is we have the tools to stop HIV from spreading in the individual patient and we have the tools to greatly reduce its spread in communities,” Frieden said. “First is to increase the proportion of people who know their status. Three-time world champion Oscar Freire will lead the Russian-registered Team Katusha in Australia’s Tour Down Under in January, organisers said on Wednesday. Race Director Mike Turtur said he was excited that Freire would be taking part in the January 15-22 race around the Adelaide area. “Spaniard Oscar Freire has accomplished what only legends like Alfredo Binda, Eddy Merckx and Rik Van Steenbergen have been able to do: win three road race world championships (1999, 2001, 2004),� Turtur said.
“His other impressive results include winning the Milan-San Remo three times (2004, 2007 and 2010) as well as several Grand Tour stages.� Freire is a four-time Tour de France stage winner, a winner of the Tour de France Green Jersey (2008) and a winner of seven stages of Vuelta a Espana. LONDON - Kimi Raikkonen has said he will return to Formula One next season fully motivated and with his passion for the sport undimmed after two years away. NEW YORK - Major League Soccer’s top executive said he is “uncertain” the sport’s English superstar David Beckham will stay with Los Angeles Galaxy given the financial lure to join French club Paris St Germain. “I hope he remains in Major League Soccer and continues his career in the United States; sitting here today I’m not sure that that will happen,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber, speaking in New York at Reuters Global Media Summit. Beckham is at the end of a lucrative five-year contract, which made him the highest paid player in the league. His average annual compensation during his contract was $6.5 million. Beckham’s team, the LA Galaxy, won the MLS Cup championship earlier this month. Garber said he spoke to Beckham at length after the game but it was down to his talks with LA Galaxy owners. Beckham, arguably the biggest star to play the game in the United States since Brazil’s Pele signed in 1975, has said he would make a decision once the MLS season concluded. Paris St Germain, which is backed by a wealthy Qatari owner, has report-
edly offered Beckham an 18-month deal worth roughly $17.9 million, according to English tabloid The Daily Mail.
