‘Inferno’ Fizzles With $15 Million as ‘Madea’ Pulls Off Victory
LOS ANGELES - This is how a franchise ends. “Inferno,” the latest big screen tour through Dan Brown’s historical conspiracy theories, flamed out at the weekend box office, earning a frosty $15 million. That’s a fraction of the $46.2 million that “Angels & Demons,” the previous film version of Brown’s novels, earned when it debuted in 2009, and it pales in relation to “The Da Vinci Code’s” $77.1 million opening way back in 2006. “This was a serious meltdown,” said Jeff Bock, box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “It shows
how fickle audiences can be. When studios release a sequel they don’t want, they just turn their shoulder.”

“Inferno” couldn’t muster a strong enough debut to capture the top spot on the domestic box office chart. Lionsgate’s “Boo! A Madea Halloween” nabbed first place for the second consecutive weekend, picking up $16.7 million to bring its stateside total to $52 million. The Tyler Perry comedy’s victory is an upset. Heading into the weekend, “Inferno” was expected to kick off to north of $20 million -- a figure that easily would have secured it a first place finish. “Inferno” finds Harvard cryptologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) grappling with amnesia as he tries to piece together clues in order to prevent the release of a global pandemic. Reviewers vivisected the film, saddling it with a 20% “rotten” rating on critics aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to the brutal reviews, “Inferno” ran smack up against a World Series battle between the Cubs and the Indians, two franchises that have gone decades without capturing a championship. Those games generated a lot of excitement among “Inferno’s” core audience of older men. Strong foreign grosses could be enough to pull “Inferno” out of the red. The film has earned roughly $150 million overseas. Sony, the studio behind the film, also reined in “Inferno’s” production budget. The picture cost $75 million to make, half the budget of “Angels & Demons.” (rtr)

OSLO - Almost one in seven children worldwide live in areas with high levels of outdoor air pollution, mostly in South Asia, and their growing bodies are most vulnerable to damage, the U.N. children’s agency UNICEF said on Monday. UNICEF called on almost 200 governments, which will meet in Morocco from Nov. 7-18 for talks on global warming, to restrict use of fossil fuels to give twin benefits of improved health and slower climate change. About 300 million children, or almost one in seven worldwide, lived in areas where outdoor pollution was highest, defined by UNICEF as at least six times international guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO), it said. Of the total, 220 million lived in South Asia. It identified the regions with satellite imagery developed by NASA. UNICEF executive director Anthony Lake said air pollution was a “major contributing factor in the deaths of around 600,000 children under five every year”, causing illnesses such as pneumonia. “Pollutants don’t only harm children’s developing lungs - they can actually cross the blood-brain barrier and permanently damage their developing brains - and, thus, their futures,” he said in a statement. “Air pollution affects poor children the most,” Nicholas Rees, a UNICEF specialist on climate and economic analysis who wrote the report, told Reuters. Worldwide, the WHO estimates
that outdoor air pollution killed 3.7 million people in 2012, including 127,000 children aged under five. Factories, power plants and vehicles using fossil fuels, dust and burning of waste were among sources. Indoor air pollution, often caused by coal- or wood-burning cooking stoves used in homes in developing nations, killed even more people, 4.3 million, of whom 531,000 were aged under five, it said. UNICEF called on the U.N.-led meeting in Morocco to hasten a shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energies such as wind or solar power, to improve children’s access to health care, limit children’s exposure to pollution and to step up monitoring of the air. TRENTON — For the third time, Johnson & Johnson has been hit with a multimillion-dollar jury verdict over whether the talc in its iconic baby powder causes ovarian cancer when applied regularly for feminine hygiene. Late Thursday, a St. Louis jury awarded $70.1 million to Deborah Giannecchini of Modesto, California, who was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer in 2012. Giannecchini, then 59, said she had used Johnson’s Baby Powder for more than 40 years to keep her genital area dry, as many women do. She blamed it for her cancer and accused J&J of negligence. Two other jury trials in St. Louis reached similar outcomes earlier this year, awarding the plaintiffs $72 million and $55 million. But in J&J’s home state of New Jersey a judge recently threw out two other cases, ruling there wasn’t reliable evidence talc causes ovarian cancer, a relatively rare disease. Johnson & Johnson says its product is safe, and it is appealing all three losses. And investors don’t seem worried that J&J is in financial trouble, even though the company faces an estimated 2,000 similar lawsuits. J&J shares fell 0.3 percent Friday, about the same as the broader stock market, to close at $115.33. The next trial is set to start in January, also in St. Louis. Here’s what experts say about talc and cancer. WHAT IS TALC?
Talc is a mineral that is mined from deposits around the world, including the U.S. The softest of minerals, it’s crushed into a white powder. It’s been widely used in cosmetics and other personal care products to absorb moisture since at least 1894, when Johnson &
Johnson’s Baby Powder was launched. But it’s mainly used in a variety of other products, including paint and plastics. DOES IT CAUSE OVARIAN CANCER?
Like many questions in science, there’s no definitive answer. Finding the cause of cancer is difficult. It would be unethical to do the best kind of study, asking a group of women to use talcum powder on their genitals and wait to see if it causes cancer, while comparing them to a group who didn’t use it. While ovarian cancer is often fatal, it’s relatively rare. It accounts for only about 22,000 of the 1.7 million new cases of cancer expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year. Factors that are known to increase a women’s risk of ovarian cancer include age, obesity, use of estrogen therapy after menopause, not having any children, certain genetic mutations and personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer.
WHAT RESEARCH SHOWS
The biggest studies have found no link between talcum powder applied to the genitals and ovarian cancer. But about two dozen smaller studies over three decades have mostly found a modest connection — a 20 percent to 40 percent increased risk among talc users. However, that doesn’t mean talc causes cancer. Several factors make that unlikely, and there’s no proof talc, which doesn’t interact with chemicals or cells, can travel up the reproductive
tract, enter the ovaries and then trigger cancer. One large study published in June that followed 51,000 sisters of breast cancer patients found genital talc users had a reduced risk of ovarian cancer, 27 percent lower than in nonusers. An analysis of two huge, long-running U.S. studies, the Women’s Health Initiative and the Nurses’ Health Study, showed no increased risk of ovarian cancer in talc users. WHAT EXPERTS SAY
If there were a true link, Dr. Hal C. Lawrence III says large studies that tracked women’s health for years would have verified results of the smaller ones. “Lord knows, with the amount of powder that’s been applied to babies’ bottoms, we would’ve seen something,” if talc caused cancer, said Lawrence, vice president of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The National Cancer Institute’s Dr. Nicolas Wentzensen says the federal agency’s position is that there’s not a clear connection. “It is very hard to establish causal relationships,” he said, adding, “A lot of ovarian cancers occur in women who have never used talc, and many women have used talc and not gotten ovarian cancer.” Research director Elizabeth Ward of the American Cancer Society says it is unusual to have so much discrepancy between studies. “The risk for any individual woman, if there is one, is probably very small,” Ward said. 10-15 trucks. Each truck of chayote delivered by farmers contains about 24,000 pieces. The current price of chayote reaches IDR 50,000 per 200 pieces. Janji said that rampant residents developing these vines are not only beneficial to farmers as plantation owners but also nonfarmers. He said that during the growing season, farmers often need workers to clean up their
gardens. Then, during harvest time farmers also need worker for harvesting and transporting their crops to trucks. Normally they can earn IDR 600,000 to raise the commodity into one truck. “Chayote also becomes a blessing for other residents. Data of the Bali Livestock and Animal Health Agency noted there were 185 rabies cases in Bali during the period of 2010 through 2016 spreading in Karangasem, Buleleng, Bangli, Gianyar, Tabanan and Jembrana. Then, based on the number of deaths, the rabies has claimed 164 fatalities during the period of 2008 through 2016. “From these data, we would like to recall the hazard of rabies and Pejeng village becomes one of the pilot projects for the handling of rabies,” said the Head of the Bali Livestock and Animal Health Agency, I Putu Sunantra, during the celebration of World Rabies Day concentrated at Pejeng, Tampaksiring, Sunday (Oct. 30). He added that various efforts have been made by the government, where one of them
is by carrying out mass vaccination from 2010 through raid method or opening vaccination post. Six districts get special attention from the team of Bali Province because the regions like Karangasem, Buleleng, Bangli, Gianyar, Tabanan and Jembrana are considered prone to rabies transmission. “Since the past six months, the team has been conducting vaccination and elimination in six districts,” he said. In the meantime, the Assistant to Administrative, Economic and Development Affairs, Regional Secretariat of Gianyar, I Ketut Astawa Suyasa, on the occasion admitted that Gianyar district is one of the rabies infected areas in Bali. Nevertheless, the government of Gianyar in cooperation with the provincial government of Bali has taken reasonable precautions to eradication in a sustainable manner. “Rabies prevention and awareness certainly need the support of society as well joint maintenance for their pets by means of vaccination and appropriate care,” said Astawa Suyasa. Prevention of rabies also poses an effort to keep the image of Gianyar as one of the tourist destinations in Bali. Levy collection planned to be changed
BANGLI - Destination arrangement plan of Kintamani has been aggressively raised by the government of Bangli. Before realizing it, the plan to change the mechanism of levy collection from single door to area-based collection also rolls out. This was the expressed by Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, recently. Gianyar told that Kintamani area will be repaired thoroughly. In other words, it does not only target the matters related to infrastructure and human resources alone. Collection of the levies will also be targeted.
All this time, visiting travelers are only charged once levy namely at the entrance of Kintamani area. This method is still considered to potentially raise polemic for a number of areas. In response to this, he planned to change the collection into area-based collection. “Levies will no longer be charged above. Then, visitors will only need to pay in each area,” he said. government is going to be directly handled by governing body of the local government-owned enterprise (Perusda). That is 30 times a mean guideline of 25 micrograms per cubic meter on average over a 24-hour period set by the World Health Organization (WHO), which says outdoor air pollution killed 3.7 million people worldwide in 2012. The U.S. embassy in New Delhi said its air pollution index had late on Sunday breached the “hazardous” level upper limit of 500, at which it stops measuring levels of PM2.5. The index had rocketed to 1,126 by 2 a.m. (2030 GMT) Roychowdhury said data was
not available to assess if Delhi’s air was worse on average than in prior years. Air quality is usually poorest in Delhi’s winter months of December and January. Authorities have responded with measures such as a ban on old trucks from entering the city and briefly trialing a scheme that limited private vehicle usage to alternate days, but experts say they have done little to reduce pollution. India is home to four of the world’s 10 cities with the worst air pollution, the WHO said in May. New Delhi ranked 11th. Almost one in seven children live in areas with high levels of outdoor air pollution, mostly in South Asia, U.N. children’s agency UNICEF said. Bank of England Governor Carney ready to serve full term -reports
LONDON - Bank of England Governor Mark Carney is leaning towards deciding to serve a full eight-year term, despite critics calling for him not to extend his time in charge of the British central bank, according to news reports. Carney, who has come under fire from supporters of Brexit for his stance in the EU referendum campaign, has said he will announce by the end of the year whether he will take up an option to stay at the Bank until 2021 rather than stick to his current departure date in mid-2018. Carney is due to hold a quarterly BoE news conference on Thursday and could make an announcement on his decision then. The Financial Times reported the Canadian, who joined the BoE in 2013, was ready to serve a full eight-year term instead of five. The BBC also said people close to Carney believed he was leaning towards staying for eight years. Those reports contrasted with others in newspapers over the weekend that said Carney was more likely to announce that he would leave in 2018. The Sunday Times said Carney was unhappy with British Prime Minister Theresa May’s office and had a closer relationship with former finance minister George Osborne, who had recruited him, than with the current minister Philip Hammond. Earlier this month, May took the unusual step of criticising the Bank of England’s low interest rates,
prompting push-back from Carney who said he would not be told how to do his job by politicians. The governor is expected to confer with May and Hammond before making a decision, the FT reported. Last week, Carney said his decision whether to stay would be based on personal rather than political considerations, and he would need to find some time to make up his mind. Carney continues to be criticised by supporters of Brexit for warning before the June 23 Brexit vote of the likely hit to be Britain’s economy from a vote to leave the European Union. Daniel Hannan, a pro-Brexit Conservative member of the European Parliament and a persistent Carney critic, told BBC radio that the governor needed to avoid getting involved in political issues. “It’s up to him (whether he extends his stay) but if he does stay it’s got to be on the basis that he’s not the rock star banker who presumes to tell Scotland whether to stay in Britain, which way to vote, and rather sticks narrowly to his brief,” Hannan told BBC radio. But others have rallied behind Carney. Martin Sorrell, chief executive of the world’s biggest advertising group WPP, said he hoped Carney would stay to help ease Britain’s economy through the volatility of the Brexit process ahead. “I hope Mark Carney stays, that will reduce levels of uncertainty,” Sorrell told Reuters. Cargo plane carrying 4 missing in Indonesia’s remote east
JAKARTA — A cargo plane carrying four people was reported missing in a remote, mountainous area of Indonesia’s easternmost Papua province, an official said Monday. The Turbo Caribou PK-SWW left the town of Timika at 10:57 p.m. Sunday for the remote district of Ilaga, but had not shown up after its last contact less than an hour after it took off, said Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency chief, Henry Bambang Soelistyo. The plane was scheduled to land at 3:22 a.m. Monday.
Soelistyo said a rescue team was sent to search for the plane, which was carrying two pilots and two passengers with cargo, including construction materials. He said fog, bad weather and dense jungle terrain were hampering search efforts. Air flight is the main source of transportation in Papua, the second biggest of Indonesia’s more than 17,000 islands. Much of Papua is covered with impenetrable jungles and mountains. In the past, some planes that have crashed there have never been found. (ap)

JAKARTA - Top Indonesian officials on Monday called for calm ahead of a planned protest by hardline Muslim groups that has fuelled concern over religious and ethnic tension in the run-up to next year’s election of the capital’s governor. Thousands of hardline Muslims are expected to take to the streets on Friday to protest against the incumbent, who is a Christian and the first ethnic Chinese in the job, after he made comments about the Islamic holy book, the Koran.

It has also frequently protested against Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahja Purnama, known locally as “Ahok”. The group made no immediate comment in response
to the officials’ call for calm. The government will deploy thousands of police and military personnel to provide security on the day of the protest. The post of Jakarta governor is a prestigious role that is sometimes seen as a stepping stone to higher political office. President Widodo served as Jakarta governor for 1-1/2 years before running for, and winning, the presidency in 2014. Purnama, who took over for Widodo, has gained a reputation as a tough reformer, but Muslim groups in several cities have marched against the Protestant governor, urging Jakarta residents not to re-elect him in February. British banker’s defence cites sexual disorder in HK double murder trial HONG KONG - Rurik Jutting, the British investment banker on trial for murdering two Indonesian women in Hong Kong, was a narcissistic sadist trying to mask the “fragile” shell of his personality having suffered sexual abuse at a boarding school, a court heard on Monday. Opening Jutting’s defence as the trial entered its second week, lawyer Tim Owen called on Dr Richard Latham, a British consulting forensic psychiatrist who has worked on between 50 to 75 similar cases. Latham told the Hong Kong court that Jutting suffered from recognised disorders from cocaine and alcohol abuse on top of his other personality disorders of sexual sadism and narcissism. He stated that at the time of the killings Jutting’s ability to control his behaviour was “substantially impaired”. “There is this very fragile sense of self esteem underneath it all,” Latham told the court, adding Jutting’s narcissistic tendencies of being boastful was a means to cover up. Owen said Jutting had been a victim of sexual assault during his teenager years at Winchester College, one of Britain’s oldest and most prestigious schools, when he was forced to perform oral sex on another boy. The defense also detailed Jutting’s father’s attempt to commit suicide by cutting his wrists when Jutting was 16. Jutting, a Cambridge University graduate who previously worked at Bank of America Corp in Hong Kong, stands accused of murdering Sumarti Ningsih, 23, and Seneng Mujiasih 26, two years ago. During the first week of the trial, the court saw video footage Jutting took of himself torturing Ningsih and telling how he had killed both women, whose mutilated bodies were found in his luxury high-rise Hong Kong apartment. Jutting has pleaded not guilty to murder on grounds of “diminished responsibility”, but guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. The courtroom has been packed since the trial began, with journalists from Britain flocking to Hong Kong to cover the sensational case. The video footage found on Jutting’s iPhone included rambling monologues where he discussed the murders, binged on cocaine and explained his violent sexual fantasies, giving psychiatrists rare insight. He has battled to rebound from release of a 2005 videotape in which he boasted about groping women.
Trump had already narrowed Clinton’s lead in national opinion polls and is leading in some battleground states where the election is likely to be decided. Daily tracking polls should reflect soon whether the new controversy is having an impact on the race. Millions of Americans have already voted. Sources close to the FBI investigation have said the latest emails were discovered as part of a separate probe of former Democratic U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, who is Clinton’s closest aide and confidante. “And then we pitted him a bit early because the vibration metrics was going sky high and a suspension failure could have easily happened. That was the earliest we could have pitted him. Everything else would have destroyed the race.” Hamilton, who made his sole stop on lap 17, told reporters the vibrations had been so bad he had feared the worst. “I didn’t know if I was going to be able to make it in the first stint,” he said. “Honestly I thought I had to stop, the vibration was so big I could barely see.” Rosberg would have been champion had he finished first and Hamilton failed to place in the top nine. British banker’s defence cites sexual disorder in HK double murder trial HONG KONG - Rurik Jutting, the British investment banker on trial for murdering two Indonesian women in Hong Kong, was a narcissistic sadist trying to mask the “fragile” shell of his personality having suffered sexual abuse at a boarding school, a court heard on Monday. Opening Jutting’s defence as the trial entered its second week, lawyer Tim Owen called on Dr Richard Latham, a British consulting forensic psychiatrist who has worked on between 50 to 75 similar cases. Latham told the Hong Kong court that Jutting suffered from recognised disorders from cocaine and alcohol abuse on top of his other personality disorders of sexual sadism and narcissism. He stated that at the time of the killings Jutting’s ability to control his behaviour was “substantially impaired”. “There is this very fragile sense of self esteem underneath it all,” Latham told the court, adding Jutting’s narcissistic tendencies of being boastful was a means to cover up. Owen said Jutting had been a victim of sexual assault during his teenager years at Winchester College, one of Britain’s oldest and most prestigious schools, when he was forced to perform oral sex on another boy. The defense also detailed Jutting’s father’s attempt to commit suicide by cutting his wrists when Jutting was 16. Jutting, a Cambridge University graduate who previously worked at Bank of America Corp in Hong Kong, stands accused of murdering Sumarti Ningsih, 23, and Seneng Mujiasih 26, two years ago. During the first week of the trial, the court saw video footage Jutting took of himself torturing Ningsih and telling how he had killed both women, whose mutilated bodies were found in his luxury high-rise Hong Kong apartment. Jutting has pleaded not guilty to murder on grounds of “diminished responsibility”, but guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. The courtroom has been packed since the trial began, with journalists from Britain flocking to Hong Kong to cover the sensational case. The video footage found on Jutting’s iPhone included rambling monologues where he discussed the murders, binged on cocaine and explained his violent sexual fantasies, giving psychiatrists rare insight. The announcement by FBI Director James Comey that his agency is investigating more emails as part of a probe into Clinton’s use of a private email server has upended the presidential race and given new hope to Trump that he can make an improbable comeback and win on Nov. 8. “When we win on Nov. 8 we are going to Washington D.C. and we are going drain the swamp,” Trump said on Sunday night at a rally in Albuquerque, New Mexico, charging that Clinton represents a corrupt political system. “Hillary Clinton is not the victim. Bank of England Governor Carney ready to serve full term -reports
LONDON - Bank of England Governor Mark Carney is leaning towards deciding to serve a full eight-year term, despite critics calling for him not to extend his time in charge of the British central bank, according to news reports. Carney, who has come under fire from supporters of Brexit for his stance in the EU referendum campaign, has said he will announce by the end of the year whether he will take up an option to stay at the Bank until 2021 rather than stick to his current departure date in mid-2018. Carney is due to hold a quarterly BoE news conference on Thursday and could make an announcement on his decision then. The Financial Times reported the Canadian, who joined the BoE in 2013, was ready to serve a full eight-year term instead of five. The BBC also said people close to Carney believed he was leaning towards staying for eight years. Those reports contrasted with others in newspapers over the weekend that said Carney was more likely to announce that he would leave in 2018. The Sunday Times said Carney was unhappy with British Prime Minister Theresa May’s office and had a closer relationship with former finance minister George Osborne, who had recruited him, than with the current minister Philip Hammond. Earlier this month, May took the unusual step of criticising the Bank of England’s low interest rates,
prompting push-back from Carney who said he would not be told how to do his job by politicians. The governor is expected to confer with May and Hammond before making a decision, the FT reported. Last week, Carney said his decision whether to stay would be based on personal rather than political considerations, and he would need to find some time to make up his mind. Carney continues to be criticised by supporters of Brexit for warning before the June 23 Brexit vote of the likely hit to be Britain’s economy from a vote to leave the European Union. Daniel Hannan, a pro-Brexit Conservative member of the European Parliament and a persistent Carney critic, told BBC radio that the governor needed to avoid getting involved in political issues. “It’s up to him (whether he extends his stay) but if he does stay it’s got to be on the basis that he’s not the rock star banker who presumes to tell Scotland whether to stay in Britain, which way to vote, and rather sticks narrowly to his brief,” Hannan told BBC radio. But others have rallied behind Carney. Cargo plane carrying 4 missing in Indonesia’s remote east
JAKARTA — A cargo plane carrying four people was reported missing in a remote, mountainous area of Indonesia’s easternmost Papua province, an official said Monday. The Turbo Caribou PK-SWW left the town of Timika at 10:57 p.m. Sunday for the remote district of Ilaga, but had not shown up after its last contact less than an hour after it took off, said Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency chief, Henry Bambang Soelistyo. The plane was scheduled to land at 3:22 a.m. Monday.
Soelistyo said a rescue team was sent to search for the plane, which was carrying two pilots and two passengers with cargo, including construction materials. He said fog, bad weather and dense jungle terrain were hampering search efforts. Air flight is the main source of transportation in Papua, the second biggest of Indonesia’s more than 17,000 islands. Much of Papua is covered with impenetrable jungles and mountains. In the past, some planes that have crashed there have never been found. (ap)

to the officials’ call for calm. The government will deploy thousands of police and military personnel to provide security on the day of the protest. The post of Jakarta governor is a prestigious role that is sometimes seen as a stepping stone to higher political office. President Widodo served as Jakarta governor for 1-1/2 years before running for, and winning, the presidency in 2014. Purnama, who took over for Widodo, has gained a reputation as a tough reformer, but Muslim groups in several cities have marched against the Protestant governor, urging Jakarta residents not to re-elect him in February. Then, based on the number of deaths, the rabies has claimed 164 fatalities during the period of 2008 through 2016. “From these data, we would like to recall the hazard of rabies and Pejeng village becomes one of the pilot projects for the handling of rabies,” said the Head of the Bali Livestock and Animal Health Agency, I Putu Sunantra, during the celebration of World Rabies Day concentrated at Pejeng, Tampaksiring, Sunday (Oct. 30). Nevertheless, the government of Gianyar in cooperation with the provincial government of Bali has taken reasonable precautions to eradication in a sustainable manner. “Rabies prevention and awareness certainly need the support of society as well joint maintenance for their pets by means of vaccination and appropriate care,” said Astawa Suyasa. Before realizing it, the plan to change the mechanism of levy collection from single door to area-based collection also rolls out. TRENTON — For the third time, Johnson & Johnson has been hit with a multimillion-dollar jury verdict over whether the talc in its iconic baby powder causes ovarian cancer when applied regularly for feminine hygiene. Late Thursday, a St. Louis jury awarded $70.1 million to Deborah Giannecchini of Modesto, California, who was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer in 2012. Giannecchini, then 59, said she had used Johnson’s Baby Powder for more than 40 years to keep her genital area dry, as many women do. She blamed it for her cancer and accused J&J of negligence. Two other jury trials in St. Louis reached similar outcomes earlier this year, awarding the plaintiffs $72 million and $55 million. But in J&J’s home state of New Jersey a judge recently threw out two other cases, ruling there wasn’t reliable evidence talc causes ovarian cancer, a relatively rare disease. Johnson & Johnson says its product is safe, and it is appealing all three losses. And investors don’t seem worried that J&J is in financial trouble, even though the company faces an estimated 2,000 similar lawsuits. J&J shares fell 0.3 percent Friday, about the same as the broader stock market, to close at $115.33. The next trial is set to start in January, also in St. Louis. Like many questions in science, there’s no definitive answer. Finding the cause of cancer is difficult. It would be unethical to do the best kind of study, asking a group of women to use talcum powder on their genitals and wait to see if it causes cancer, while comparing them to a group who didn’t use it. While ovarian cancer is often fatal, it’s relatively rare. It accounts for only about 22,000 of the 1.7 million new cases of cancer expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year. Factors that are known to increase a women’s risk of ovarian cancer include age, obesity, use of estrogen therapy after menopause, not having any children, certain genetic mutations and personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer.
WHAT RESEARCH SHOWS
The biggest studies have found no link between talcum powder applied to the genitals and ovarian cancer. But about two dozen smaller studies over three decades have mostly found a modest connection — a 20 percent to 40 percent increased risk among talc users. However, that doesn’t mean talc causes cancer. Several factors make that unlikely, and there’s no proof talc, which doesn’t interact with chemicals or cells, can travel up the reproductive
tract, enter the ovaries and then trigger cancer. One large study published in June that followed 51,000 sisters of breast cancer patients found genital talc users had a reduced risk of ovarian cancer, 27 percent lower than in nonusers. An analysis of two huge, long-running U.S. studies, the Women’s Health Initiative and the Nurses’ Health Study, showed no increased risk of ovarian cancer in talc users. WHAT EXPERTS SAY
If there were a true link, Dr. Hal C. Lawrence III says large studies that tracked women’s health for years would have verified results of the smaller ones. “Lord knows, with the amount of powder that’s been applied to babies’ bottoms, we would’ve seen something,” if talc caused cancer, said Lawrence, vice president of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The National Cancer Institute’s Dr. Nicolas Wentzensen says the federal agency’s position is that there’s not a clear connection. “It is very hard to establish causal relationships,” he said, adding, “A lot of ovarian cancers occur in women who have never used talc, and many women have used talc and not gotten ovarian cancer.” Research director Elizabeth Ward of the American Cancer Society says it is unusual to have so much discrepancy between studies. “The risk for any individual woman, if there is one, is probably very small,” Ward said. Headman of Pinggan, Ketut Janji, said that of the 624 heads of families at Pinggan village, nearly 80 percent are cultivating chayote. This cultivation has run for almost four years. “Formerly, people widely cultivated tangerine,” he said when met at Pinggan village, recently.
The shift of residents from the cultivation of tangerine happens due to chayote plants do not require extra maintenance. Besides, the harvest can be done once a week. The market prospect is also promising so that it becomes one of the reasons why many farmers at Pinggan eventually develop
this plant. He expressed that the demand for chayote all this time do not only come from the local market, but also from the markets outside the region. Within a day, the amount of chayote delivered from Pinggan village to other regions such as Java Island could reach
10-15 trucks. Each truck of chayote delivered by farmers contains about 24,000 pieces. The current price of chayote reaches IDR 50,000 per 200 pieces. Janji said that rampant residents developing these vines are not only beneficial to farmers as plantation owners but also nonfarmers. He said that during the growing season, farmers often need workers to clean up their
gardens. Then, during harvest time farmers also need worker for harvesting and transporting their crops to trucks. Normally they can earn IDR 600,000 to raise the commodity into one truck. “Chayote also becomes a blessing for other residents. ‘Inferno’ Fizzles With $15 Million as ‘Madea’ Pulls Off Victory
LOS ANGELES - This is how a franchise ends. “Inferno,” the latest big screen tour through Dan Brown’s historical conspiracy theories, flamed out at the weekend box office, earning a frosty $15 million. That’s a fraction of the $46.2 million that “Angels & Demons,” the previous film version of Brown’s novels, earned when it debuted in 2009, and it pales in relation to “The Da Vinci Code’s” $77.1 million opening way back in 2006. “This was a serious meltdown,” said Jeff Bock, box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “It shows
how fickle audiences can be. When studios release a sequel they don’t want, they just turn their shoulder.”

“Inferno” couldn’t muster a strong enough debut to capture the top spot on the domestic box office chart. Lionsgate’s “Boo! A Madea Halloween” nabbed first place for the second consecutive weekend, picking up $16.7 million to bring its stateside total to $52 million. The Tyler Perry comedy’s victory is an upset. Heading into the weekend, “Inferno” was expected to kick off to north of $20 million -- a figure that easily would have secured it a first place finish. “Inferno” finds Harvard cryptologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) grappling with amnesia as he tries to piece together clues in order to prevent the release of a global pandemic. Reviewers vivisected the film, saddling it with a 20% “rotten” rating on critics aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to the brutal reviews, “Inferno” ran smack up against a World Series battle between the Cubs and the Indians, two franchises that have gone decades without capturing a championship. Those games generated a lot of excitement among “Inferno’s” core audience of older men. Strong foreign grosses could be enough to pull “Inferno” out of the red. The film has earned roughly $150 million overseas. Sony, the studio behind the film, also reined in “Inferno’s” production budget. One in seven children suffer high air pollution: UNICEF
OSLO - Almost one in seven children worldwide live in areas with high levels of outdoor air pollution, mostly in South Asia, and their growing bodies are most vulnerable to damage, the U.N. children’s agency UNICEF said on Monday. UNICEF called on almost 200 governments, which will meet in Morocco from Nov. 7-18 for talks on global warming, to restrict use of fossil fuels to give twin benefits of improved health and slower climate change. About 300 million children, or almost one in seven worldwide, lived in areas where outdoor pollution was highest, defined by UNICEF as at least six times international guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO), it said. Of the total, 220 million lived in South Asia. It identified the regions with satellite imagery developed by NASA. UNICEF executive director Anthony Lake said air pollution was a “major contributing factor in the deaths of around 600,000 children under five every year”, causing illnesses such as pneumonia. “Pollutants don’t only harm children’s developing lungs - they can actually cross the blood-brain barrier and permanently damage their developing brains - and, thus, their futures,” he said in a statement. “Air pollution affects poor children the most,” Nicholas Rees, a UNICEF specialist on climate and economic analysis who wrote the report, told Reuters. Worldwide, the WHO estimates
that outdoor air pollution killed 3.7 million people in 2012, including 127,000 children aged under five. Factories, power plants and vehicles using fossil fuels, dust and burning of waste were among sources. Indoor air pollution, often caused by coal- or wood-burning cooking stoves used in homes in developing nations, killed even more people, 4.3 million, of whom 531,000 were aged under five, it said. UNICEF called on the U.N.-led meeting in Morocco to hasten a shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energies such as wind or solar power, to improve children’s access to health care, limit children’s exposure to pollution and to step up monitoring of the air.
