Pacino does double duty at Venice Film Festival Associated Press

VENICE — Al Pacino made two trips up the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, with a pair of movies about aging, regret, giving up and letting go. But fear not — the actor says he’s not about to lower the curtain on his own career. Pacino plays a small-town Texas locksmith with a key for everything except his own unhappiness in David Gordon Green’s “Manglehorn,” one of 20 films competing for the festival’s Golden Lion prize. And he’s an aging actor who has lost his mojo, and his grip on reality, in Barry Levinson’s “The Humbling,” screening out-of-competition at the festival. In both films, the 74-year-old actor looks a wreck — shambling, disheveled and drawn. But speaking to journalists before Saturday’s dual premieres he was black-clad, sharply coiffed and sporting ice-blue mirrored sunglasses — every bit the movie star. He said he could relate to his “Humbling” character’s desire to pack in the

rigors of acting — but hadn’t lost his own appetite for the job. “I feel very lucky, I have to say,” Pacino said. “When I think of my life and my background, where I came from — like all of us I had issues as a youngster and had to overcome things, and I found something in life that I love to do. Four decades after he burst to fame as the wiry young star of “The Panic in Needle Park” and “The Godfather,” Pacino pours his skill and soul into these two meaty autumn-years parts. The title character of “Manglehorn” is an emotionally stunted grump who sends countless letters to a long-lost love, all of which come back marked “return to sender.” He reserves his affection for his granddaughter and his cat, rebuffing ten-

tative romantic overtures from a sweetnatured bank teller (Holly Hunter). In “The Humbling,” waning actor Simon Axler rattles around his half-empty mansion like a Connecticut King Lear, pinning his misguided hopes of love and redemption on a much younger lesbian, played by Greta Gerwig. Pacino said he was drawn to a character “going through this tragic fall” and struck by the story’s juxtaposition of comedy and darkness. He said that any actor could relate to the film, which explores the way the demands of performing, the distractions of drinking and drugs and the pressures of fame “intellectually and emotionally get you to stray somewhat.”

BANGLI - So far, the species of fish living in the area of Lake Batur is diverse. Aside from tilapia, there are also grass carp. This moss-eating freshwater fish is now quite demanded by local residents. Other than offering more savory flavor, the growth of this moss-eating fish also tends to be faster than that of other species. The Head of Bangli Livestock and Fisheries Agency, Alit Parwata, said on Friday (Aug 29) the growth of grass carp was faster than the other fish. This fish only took less than six months from the spread of fingerlings to harvest. Each fish of this species could reach the weight of about 2.5 kg. “Yes, it is in great demand today as its cultivation takes shorter time,” he said. In addition to its rapid growth, the flavor of this fish also tended to be more delicious than other

fish. According to Alit Parwata, probably it happened because the fish were only eating natural foods in the form of moss growing in the lake. Since they lived in the wild, added Parwata, this fish was remarkably sought after by people living around the lake. Moreover, the recent eruption of sulfur led to a lot of fish to rise to the surface. As having large enough size, many residents hunted them by using hook and spear. However, such an action was deplored because the hunted fish belonged to brood stock. Considering the high public demand for the fish, there was possibility if the Bangli Livestock and Fisheries Agency would think about the further development in floating net cages (KJA). Mouse population reduces, crop harvest gets better

AMLAPURA - Farmers and customary villagers of Ababi, Karangasem, are happy. Their paddy plants in the area of Tirtagangga tourist attraction are no longer attacked by mice. Mouse population has much reduced. As a result, the paddy plants grow well and the crops increase. It was announced by Chief of Ababi customary village, Made Sudiarsa, a few days ago when met in Karangasem. Such encouraging phenomenon happened after the implementation of cremation for jero ketut (refined name for mouse by Balinese) last year. Sudiarsa said that since a few months ago, farmers had harvested in turn both at rice field and plantation. Similarly, the harvest was also made at paddy fields belonging to village property. “Just now, I was sent an SMS if the rice harvest at the village has been completed. But I could not come to join,” he said. In the mouse cremation last year, he stood at the edge of cremation bade tower carried by tens of local residents. Procession of local villagers reached about 1 km long, from the location of cremation ritual at the center of Ababi village to the cemetery of mouse in the south of the village. Although the result was not so much, he said, there had been indication if the mouse population had remarkably decreased from previously. They no longer

He said that condition was different from that before the mouse cremation. Formerly, farmers very often suffered losses and crop failure. Other than afflicting the results of cassava, harvest failure also happened to the crops and rice in the paddy field in the village area. At least, they could only get 1 kg of grain from 100 square meters of land. Most of the grain was devoured by mice. Their population was also considered unusual. There was a white rat on local tree, while smaller mice brought rice to the three. Mice did not only devour the rice, but also damaged young rice. “After implementing the cremation, the mice are no longer attacking the paddy plants in the rice fields. They have

significantly reduced and we rarely even find them. I wonder where they go,” said another farmer, Made Gunung, from Tanah Lengis hamlet, Ababi. The village known to have the tradition of Nyepi Luh and Nyepi Muani indeed also had mouse cremation since ancient times. The last mouse cremation was held last year. It had not been organized for more than 15 years. Local residents and farmers had long not been able to hold the mouse cremation because the budget was considered expensive for the farmers in some subak areas of the village. Procession and ritual paraphernalia of the cremation were almost the same as the cremation for human. According to a village leader, Nyoman Kuta, when coming down to the paddy field with thousands of residents to catch mouse, it was philosophically intended to upgrade the incarnation of the mouse’s soul. Furthermore, if they were reborn they would not take the birth as mouse but taking a higher degree of being so that they no longer became the pest of farmers’ plant. (013)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

visit. The fun is that no two wings are quite the same. Anchor Bar wings sizzle in the deep fryer until crispy. They they’re tossed in a bowl with a mixture of butter and cayenne pepper sauce — Frank’s RedHot is the preferred brand — just before they are served alongside celery sticks and blue cheese dressing for dipping. “They’re the original, that’s the bottom line,” said Drew Cerza, who was proclaimed Buffalo’s “wing king” after starting the wing festival in 2002. A trip to Duff’s Famous Wings in suburban Amherst offers a different twist on the classic. While the Anchor Bar serves up a crispy wing, Duff’s offers a softer, saucier version. “They cover the wings after they sauce them and it really allows the sauce to penetrate the skin of the wing,” Cerza said. Watch out for the heat here: “The mild is medium, medium’s hot, hot’s extra hot and extra hot,” said Cerza, “will kill you.” Another option, where attention to detail is the theme, comes from the Bar Bill Tavern, just south of Buffalo in East Aurora. The secret here — the sauce is applied to every deep-fried wing individually with a paint brush just before serving.

“They never go in a bucket,” explained bar manager Joe Morcelle. “When you start shaking wings, it starts breaking up the crispiness.” The individual treatment also ensures the sauce gets into every nook and cranny, Morcelle said. And while most places pile the wings on a plate, the Bar Bill arranges them precisely this way: the five drums on the left, five flats on the right, fanned out to form a circle with the celery and blue cheese in the middle. “You eat with your eyes,” Morcelle said (though you’ll still need plenty of napkins for your fingers). Circling back to the city, another of the “wing king’s” favorites is found at La Nova Pizzeria, which has perfected a barbecue wing cooked over charcoal, complete with grill marks. “They put them on the grill but they keep moving them,” Cerza said. “You’ve got to keep moving them and you can’t burn them. It’s very tricky. It’s an art.” The city also hosts a National Buffalo Wing Festival every Labor Day weekend. The event took its inspiration from the silver screen: When Bill Murray’s character in the 2001 movie “Osmosis Jones” set out for the National Buffalo Wing Festival — there was no such thing in real life.

Barcelona residents fight back against drunken, naked tourists

BARCELONA - A record tourism year may be a boost for Spain’s struggling economy, but in one corner of Barcelona residents are furious about drunken holidaymakers and a new fad for carousing naked in public. People of La Barceloneta, tucked behind a beachfront which attracts millions of visitors a year, have taken to the streets several days in a row to protest against a rise in unruly tourism and to demand more control over low-cost accommodation. The marches come after complaints of raucous late-night partying, increasing litter and drunken antics like the fad for nudity around town, captured by residents in photos published in national newspapers. Barcelona’s city hall said it would create new inspection teams to carry out door-to-door searches in the neighbourhood to locate illegal tourist flats, which residents blame for anti-social tourism. “We don’t want tourist flats in the neighbourhood, with or without licences,” read a statement on the Facebook page used by locals to organise the latest protest on Aug. 21.

The city government said it was sending a council member to meet residents on Friday and promised more police in the area and a phone bank to take complaints. Barcelona, in the northeastern Catalonia region, has already had a crackdown on home rental websites for marketing illegal short-term room lets, fining Airbnb over the practice in July. Residents of La Barceloneta, once a small fishing village, have been draping their balconies with banners calling on visitors to respect their sleep and the neighbourhood for years. Military operations will be limited in scope and duration as needed to address the humanitarian crisis in Amirli and protect the civilians trapped in the town, Kirby said. Instead of fleeing in the face of the Islamic State drive across northern Iraq, the Shiite Turkmens have stayed and fortified their town of 15,000 with trenches and armed positions. While Amirli fought off the initial attack in June, it has been surrounded by the militants since mid-July. RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s economy, once an emerging-market darling, fell into recession, according to government data released Friday, as millions of new middle class citizens tightened their belts and further dampened a creditdriven spending spree. The results are a blow to President Dilma Rousseff, who faces an increasingly tough reelection in October. A new poll released late Friday showed her biggest rival pulling into a dead heat with her in a first-round vote — and is 10 percentage points ahead of the Rousseff in an expected runoff ballot. The government’s statistics bureau reported that gross domestic product dropped 0.6 percent in the second quarter, in large part because of soft consumer spending. Firstquarter results also were revised downward from 0.2 percent growth to a 0.2 percent drop, showing a two-quarter slide that most economists use to define a recession. Analysts said the economy also suffered because investors are holding off, waiting to see how the October election changes the economic winds. Even the World Cup played a part in Brazil’s doldrums because workers took many days off, contributing to weak industrial output. But the heart of the problem is a crisis for the government’s model of consumption-led growth, which many economists say is played out. “Of course I’m spending a lot less!” said Maria Sousa, a 25-year-

German security official warns of terror threat

NUSA DUA - The governments of Indonesia and Kazakhstan have agreed on trade and economic cooperation after conducting a bilateral meeting on Saturday. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed at Uluwatu 5 Room of BNDCC, Nusa Dua, Bali, on Saturday during the 6th Global Forum of United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. Indonesia was represented by Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa, while Kazakhstan by Foreign Minister Erlan Idrissov. “Five government-to-government and 14 business-to-business cooperations have been agreed upon,” Minister Natalegawa stated. Kazakhstan was a very important country in Central Asia region, Natalegawa pointed out. “It has a common market with Russia and Belarus, so that our private companies investing in Kazakhstan will not only have access to the Kazakhstan market but also Russia and Belarus, the markets of around 200 million people.” The two countries had also agreed on establishing a consultation forum for both ministries. “Through Kazakhstan, we will have wider access to the larger

market in Central Asia,” Natalegawa said. Indonesia was also planning to build instant noodles factories in Kazakhstan, as the country was one of the largest wheat producers in the world. The cooperation has also offered the establishment of Indonesian tire factory in Kazakhstan. The two countries had also discussed air service agreement on the establishment of direct flight route from Almaty to Denpasar, Bali. Almaty is not the capital city of Kazakhstan but a center of industry, tourism, and business. The only hindrance was the distance, a geographical factor, as the perception is that Kazakhstan is a country far from Indonesia whose potential was unknown, Natalegawa noted. “We should overcome such perception and should consider the good opportunities that Kazakhstan has offered to Indonesia,” he said. Meanwhile, foreign minister of Kazakhstan said distance was not the major hindrance to trade and business agreement. “With modern means of communications and modern technologies, Kazakhstan has been improving its access through the global market, and these will bring Kazakhstan and South Asia-Pacific closer,” he added.

Marty said the governments of Indonesia and Kazakhstan were studying the possibility of the establishment of cooperation in the field of extradition. “They (Kazakhstan) wanted an extradition cooperation and, in addition, transfer of sentenced convicts,” said Marty. However, few hindrances with Indonesia is that the law on such issues has not yet been regulated, he noted. “If the transfer of sentenced persons cannot be met, at least the possibility of cooperation of extradition can be explored,” Natalegawa said. The cooperation in extradition is necessary during unexpected situations, he explained. “During the past, incidents and developments had forced us to extradite Indonesian citizens from a particular and remote country, which had minimum cooperation with Indonesia,” Natalegawa stated. The two countries also discussed air service agreement about the establishment of direct flight route from Almaty, a center of industry, tourism, and business in Kazakhstan, to Denpasar, Bali, and agreed on some cooperation in trade and economy sectors.

MILAN — New Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri kicked off his time in charge with a victory as his team won 1-0 at Chievo Verona in the Serie A opener on Saturday. Roma, last year’s runner-up, won 2-0 at home to Fiorentina, with Radja Nainggolan and Gervinho scoring. Juventus showed that little has changed from the spirit which drove it to three consecutive league titles as Martin Caceres helped open the scoring in the sixth minute. Caceres headed Carlos Tevez’s corner toward goal, although it eventually went in off the back of Cristiano Biraghi. Juventus had several chances to extend its advantage and hit the woodwork three times in the first half. “There are good signs, I’m happy enough,” Allegri said. “But there is a lot to improve. I was more worried than angry at the end. We should have closed the match and instead we risked them equalizing.” Roma got off to a record Serie A start of 10 straight wins last season, before faltering as the campaign wore on. It once again looks set to push Juventus all the way. “We’re strong and we’re not going to hide it,” Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi said. “This year

The attacking pace of Gervinho and Juan Manuel Iturbe caused Fiorentina no end of problems. Roma took the lead in a move started and finished by Nainggolan. He threaded the ball through to Gervinho and was on hand to smash the rebound into the bottom right corner after his teammate’s effort had been parried by Fiorentina goalkeeper Norberto Neto. Gervinho sealed the result in stoppage time, beating the offside trap to race onto Nainggolan’s through ball, before rounding Neto and firing across into the back of the net.
