Rihanna in Cuba’s capital to record music video
HAVANA — Pop star Rihanna drew a crowd Friday while cruising down Havana’s Malecon shore boulevard in a classic American convertible from the 1950s. Children and young people swarmed around the car, using their cellphones to snap pictures of the singer while security guards kept them from getting too close. Cuban state media say Rihanna arrived in Cuba on Wednesday and made an unannounced appearance at the La Fontana restaurant. The media reports say she also has recorded video footage in the capital’s central district of El Vedado and at the La Guarida restaurant, where the Cuban movie “Strawberry and Chocolate” was filmed. Iggy Azalea cancels US tour for 2nd time
NEW YORK — Iggy Azalea has canceled her U.S. tour for a second time. The “Fancy” rapper tweeted Friday “as u may know, the tour is cancelled.” She added that she’s “so sad and sorry to let my fans down.” Azalea announced in March that The Great Escape Tour would not kick off in April. She rescheduled the tour due to production delays and said it would take place this fall. Representatives from Azalea’s record label, Def Jam, and tour promoter, AEG, didn’t return emails seeking comment. Azalea didn’t offer any details about the second cancellation. The Grammy-nominated rapper, whose recent single is “Pretty Girls” with Britney Spears, tweeted that she’ll “be back out on the road when the next album is done.” Azalea said she’s still committed to her upcoming festival performances. LOS ANGELES — When Demi Lovato was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she was actually relieved. “Growing up, I felt very, very depressed,” she said. “Even though I was playing concerts and living out my dream, I couldn’t tell you why I was upset.” After a family intervention, she sought treatment and learned she has a mental illness. “I remember smiling and thinking great, OK, so there’s not anything wrong with me as a person,” she said in a recent interview. “It’s actually just a condition that I have and I can do something to fix it. I don’t have to be like this forever.” Lovato is sharing her story and encouraging others to do the same through Be Vocal: Speak Up For Mental Health, an initiative launched Thursday by a pharmaceutical company, the National Alliance on Mental Illness and other mental-health advocacy groups. Its aim is to improve treatment options at all levels and erase the stigma around mental illnesses. “It’s not something that anyone should be ashamed of,” Lovato said. “The more people talk about it, the more people can come out and get the help they need.” Be Vocal is as much about sufferers voicing their treatment needs as it is about families and communities speaking up for better resources to meet those needs, she said. Lovato’s improved mental state is reflected in her work. “I’d say my music is a lot happier now!” she said with a laugh. The 22-year-old entertainer said she’s recording a new album, which she plans to release on Safehouse Records, the new label that she and partners Nick Jonas and her manager, Phil McIntyre, announced earlier this week. And she’ll continue to advocate for mental health, to make depression and other mental illnesses as easy to discuss as diabetes or the flu. “I didn’t understand why I was going through what I was when I was dealing with all of this, and I realized I could share my story and help others,” she said. “If that’s my purpose for being on Earth, than that’s what I want to do. As witnessed by the hundred or so foreign travellers who drop by the area of Tegallalang, Gianyar everyday. People flock to this location to admire the orderly arrangement of terraced paddy field that line the cliff there. Although a beautiful sight to behold from above, many travelers descend to the bottom of the cliff to take pictures with the terraced paddies as a backdrop. Others enjoy the beauty of Ceking from a distance, namely around the art shop to the west.
The large number of tourist visits, has become a blessing for the people living in the surrounding area who run restaurants and craft shops that sell paintings, key chains, statues and various other Balinese handicrafts. Ceking terrace has becomes a
favorite destination among foreign travelers, but there are still some issues that need to be resolved to maximize enjoyment of this location. The main problem is the traffic caused by the poorly managed parking services in the region. Sometimes the traffic is so bad that travel agencies divert
their guest to Jatiluwuh, Tabanan, where visitors can enjoy a panorama of terraced paddy field that is quite similar to that of Ceking. Headman of Tegallalang, Dewa Rai Sutrisna, revealed that despite the large contribution that visitors to Ceking provide towards the economy of the local people, traffic remains an issue. Therefor efforts are now being made to arrange the parking situation to the south of Ceking. “This parking area will be
able to accommodate 70 cars but for the time being, it is still under construction so can only accommodate 30 cars,” he explained. Sacred art of Wayang wong make Bulelleng proud SINGARAJA - Buleleng is worthy of being included as of the regions of Bali that has a rich varied and unique sacred art heritage. The hindus of Tejakula for instance have a unique and sacred art known wayang wong (human puppet—Ed). In order to preserve and promote the arts of the East Buleleng, wayang wong -that uses strorylines taken from puppet theater, has recently begun to be performed at local and national events, whereas in the past it was only performed at temple ceremonies in clan temple of Tejakula.

Komang Gede, one of the leading dancers, while in Singaraja some time ago explained that the birth of the wayang wong art of Tejakula originated in the art of gambuh. Gambuh dancers generally did not wear masks and their movements were accompanied by gamelan music. In the 18th century the art of gambuh was primarily performed for members of the royal families in Bangli. To Gede’s recollection Anak Agung was the one who was especially interested in the appearance of the gambuh dancers and donated a mask to one of the dancers. It is said that this mask was what transformed the gambuh into the wayang wong. “Because Anak Agung from the kingdom of Bangli really liked watching the gambuh art we perform, he donated a mask and since then the mask has inspired gambuh to change into wayang wong and until today the mask that was given remains sacred along with the other masks,” he said. Ever since gambuh transformed into the art of wayang wong, added Komang Gede, the dancers and the gamelan players are increasingly eager to develop and preserve the wayang wong. The masks of the puppet characters that are played are continuously added to and the older ones maintained. However, performances in the past were stage in relation to piodalan or the temple
birthday of the clan temple at Tejakula. Eventually, demands for performances of wayang wong also came from several large temples in Bali on the occasion of their piodalan rituals. It is not surprising that the wayang wong of Tejakula is now regularly performed at temples such as the Ratu Gede Sambangan, Khayangan Dangsil and Beji Temples. “These are some of the temples that always have a performance of wayang wong, for their piodalan. Wayang wong dancers will never reject a request to perform because it is for the sake of physical nature, and we sincerely do the performance as a devotional work,” he said. Recently, the art of wayang wong has started to be performed outside of the ritual context of events such temple birthdays. According to Komang Gede, who is also Head of Buleleng Social Affairs, such non ritual performances are an opportunity for the dancers and gamelan musicians to preserve and introduce wayang wong as a heritage to general public, so that it does not get buried under the variety of modern influences such as television that take up such a large place in cultural landscape. This is the main reason that the Teja Murti wayang wong troupe was finally established in the 1970s. The troupe consisted of 30 dancers and 15 gamelan players who began to perform

The successors of this sacred dance heritage are already guaranteed as evidenced by the children and grandchildren of the wayang wong dancers and musicians who are interested in continuing this legacy. The preservation of this sacred dance is also strengthened by the belief that anyone who tries to not carry on this traditional art will have an unhappy life due to sickness. “Because this sacred art is inherited, there must be successor and now our children or grandchildren and our nephews have joined in learning this dance or playing the accompanying gamelan music,” he explained. Holiday in socialist fairyland? North Korea woos tourists
PYONGYANG — If you’re still looking for somewhere exotic to go this summer and don’t mind a vacation that comes with a heavy dose of socialist propaganda and leader worship, North Korea says it’s just the place for you. Fresh off a drastic, half-year ban that closed North Korea’s doors to virtually all foreigners over fears they would spread the Ebola virus — despite the fact that there were no cases of Ebola reported anywhere in Asia — the country is once again determined to show off its “socialist fairyland” to tourists. The focus on tourism is the blessing of Kim Jong Un himself and, in typical fashion, officials have set lofty goals in their effort to please their leader. About 100,000 tourists came to North Korea last year, all but a few thousand of them from neighboring China. Kim Sang Hak, a senior economist at the influential Academy of
Social Sciences, told The Associated Press the North hopes that by around 2017, there will be 10 times as many tourists and that the number will hit 2 million by 2020. Pyongyang’s interest in attracting tourists may sound ironic, or even contradictory, for a country that has taken extreme measures to remain sheltered from the outside world. But Kim said the push, formally endorsed by Kim Jong Un in March 2013, is seen as both a potentially lucrative revenue stream and a means of countering stereotypes of the country as starving, backward and relentlessly bleak. “Tourism can produce a lot of profit relative to the investment
required, so that’s why our country is putting priority on it,” he said in a recent interview in Pyongyang, adding that along with scenic mountains, secluded beaches and a seemingly endless array of monuments and museums, the North has another ace up its sleeve — the image that it is simply unlike anywhere else on Earth. “Many people in foreign countries think in a wrong way about our country,” Kim said, brushing aside criticisms of its human rights record, lack of freedoms and problems with hunger in the countryside. “Though the economic sanctions of the U.S. imperialists are increasing, we are developing our economy. So I think many people
are curious about our country.” Opponents in the West say tourists who go to North Korea are helping to fill the coffers of a rogue regime and harming efforts to isolate and pressure Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear weapons and improve its human rights record. For safety reasons, the State Department strongly advises U.S. citizens not to travel to North Korea. None of that has stopped the number of American and European tourists from gradually increasing, and such concerns are not so strong in the countries North Korea is most actively wooing — China, Russia and Southeast Asia. “About 80 percent of the tourists who come are from neighboring countries,” said state tourism official Kim Yong Il. “It’s normal to develop tourism within your region, so our country is not exceptional in that way. we are also expanding to European countries as well.” While the overall quality of life in North Korea hasn’t shifted much in the past few years, efforts to build attractions for visitors and the infrastructure required to host them are already beginning to change the face of the capital and some scattered special tourism zones recently established across the country. Amid the generally Spartan context of their surroundings, those attractions, which are also used by average North Koreans at much lower fees, can be quite striking. In Pyongyang, some of the more popular tourist sites include a new, high-tech shooting range, where visitors can hunt animated tigers with laser guns or use live ammo to bag real pheasants, which can be prepared to eat right there on the spot. There is also a new equestrian center, a huge water park and revamped “fun fairs” replete with roller coasters, fast-food stands and a 5-D theater. After a year of feverish construction, Pyongyang’s new international airport terminal could open as soon as next month. Outside of the showcase capital, where funds, electricity and adequate lodging are much scarcer, development has been focused on the area around Mount Kumgang and Wonsan, a port city on the east coast. A luxury ski resort was recently opened just outside of Wonsan and a number of new restaurants have sprung up along the city’s beachfront area, which is popular with tourists and locals alike for swimming, clambakes and outdoor barbeques. But like everything else, North Korea is approaching tourism “in its own way.” Tourists of any nationality can expect constant monitoring from ever-watchful guides and a lot of visits to model hospitals, schools and farms, along with well-staged events intended to impress and promote Pyongyang’s unique brand of authoritarian socialism. Like all other visitors to the North, they have precious few opportunities to interact with average people or observe their daily lifestyle. Tourists can also expect severe repercussions if they step out of line. Tours to Mount Kumgang by South Koreans were quite popular for about a decade until 2008, when they were halted after a South Korean housewife who walked into a restricted area was shot dead by a North Korean guard. More recently, an American tourist who impulsively left a Bible in a provincial nightclub was detained for nearly six months until the Pentagon sent a plane to Pyongyang to pick him up. (ap)

Australian yachts arrived at Benoa Port DENPASAR - As many as 17 yachts from Australia arrived at Bali’s Benoa port after sailing in the Wonderful Indonesia Fremantle to Bali trip from Perth. “The yachts plan to stay in Bali until Saturday and will continue their sailing tour of other islands around Bali,” the president director of port operating company PT Pelindo III, Djarwo Surjanto said. The yachts were seen off by Indonesian Consul General Ade Padmo Sarwono on Friday, May 18, for the event, which is organized once in two years. He stated that the event is held in cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism, the West Australia Tourism and Health Ministry, Fremantle Sailing Club, airline company Garuda Indonesia and Pelindo III to develop destinations and infrastructure for cruise ships. Members of the international yacht club headquartered in Australia will be entertained with typical traditional Balinese art performances while on the island, Surjanto added.
In addition, Commodore of Fremantle Sailing Club Bob Kucera pointed out that 20 yachts had participated in the event, but due to some technical difficulties, only 17 had successfully arrived in Bali. Each luxurious yacht can carry six to 12 people on board. Besides their family members who arrived separately earlier, nearly 500 yachting tourists will visit the island for the event. The seamen and their families will not only sail to Bali but will also visit other islands, mostly those in the eastern Indonesian regions, Kucera noted. “Several Australians only consider Bali when they think about Indonesia. However, Indonesia has other attractive islands, as well. In view of that, we are encouraging seamen to also visit those islands,” he affirmed. Benoa has now been included in the international electronic navigation map, attracting a number of cruise ships to call at Bali. TNI Commander calls on soldiers to end sectoral egoism DENPASAR - The Indonesian Defense Forces’ (TNI) Commander General Moeldoko appealed to all soldiers on Thursday to put an end to sectoral egoism. “We must realize interoperability of both intelligence and operations. In realizing it, we must reduce sectoral egoism in all forces,” he affirmed while giving directives to 2,360 soldiers, civil servants, and members of Dharma Pertiwi of the Udayana Regional Command IX. He emphasized that all TNI soldiers must build synergy in their forces by upholding the spirit of unity. The capabilities of TNI personnel must always be boosted through internal improvement that will be reflected in their discipline and combat capabilities. “TNI intelligence is also being continually improved through the strengthening of the Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS),” he pointed out. On the occasion, General Moeldoko also spoke about the issue of remuneration, revealing that it will continue to be increased. “I was once invited to a dinner by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the palace. There I
conveyed to him that the remuneration has not yet been increased,” he remarked. When President Jokowi was invited to the TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap to receive an honorary title from the army’s special force, he stated that the TNI’s remuneration will be increased to 56 percent. “Remuneration is increased to 56 percent from 37 percent. It means that it is up 19 percent. Next year, we will demand more. The condition is that you have to work even harder,” he affirmed. He stressed that in order to be able to improve the welfare of the TNI soldiers, national stability must be maintained, so that the development efforts can be carried out smoothly. “If the nation’s development runs well, the economy will grow to enable the state to allocate sufficient funds in the budget for the TNI,” he noted. In view of this, the TNI must support the government, so that it can function smoothly, he said. “The government’s functioning should not be affected by any party from any quarter. Guitars made by Tabanan artist in demand by national market
TABANAN - Aside from having a myriad of attractions that can be visited, Tabanan County also has a number of artists whose works are popular all over Indonesia and beyond. One such artist is 45 year old guitar maker I Putu Sunarta, from Dukuh hamlet, Penebel. His guitars are not only popular with locals but are also in demand by national and international markets including customers in the Netherlands and the United States.

Sunarta’s guitars are more attractive that common guitars because of the creative touch that he gives to them by carving their bodies. Wanting to maintain a Balinese nuance, Sunarta mainly applies Balinese ornaments to these instruments. “Many customers order the guitars that are embellished with Balinese carvings. But sometimes we don’t have enough people to fill all the orders, because we only have three people who can make the guitars,” revealed Sunarta recently. While putting the final touches on one of his guitars, Sunarta told of how he came to pursue the guitar making business, which has begun to gain customers from all over the country. Curious about why some guitars cost so much more that other, he bought an acoustic guitar for IDR 1 million. Not satisfied with the sound that it produced, he took it apar and tried to figure out how to make it produce a better sound. “This is how I started to learn about guitar making. I now also have a small guitar repair business.” he said. Apart from repairing guitars, Sunarta’s obsession with being able to make quality guitars according to various specifications, continues to rage on. Sunarta uses mahogany, maple, cypress and Indian rosewood to make his guitars. “It also depends on the order, but I predominantly use mahogany from Jepara, Java,” he said. He explained that the time required for making a guitar depends on the level of complexity. The fastest that a standard acoustic guitar without carvings can be completed is two weeks. Guitars with carvings can sometimes take him up to a month to make depending on the complexity of the carving. As for the his prices, Sunarta is apparently not willing sell for a very high price. He sells his standard acoustic guitars for between IDR 1 and 12 million, depending on the specications. His carvings or ornaments are mostly inspired by the Mahabharata epic or motifs taken from traditional Balinese carvings. In addition, he also accepts orders for tailor-made guitar carvings based in the customers desire. At the end of 2013, Sunarta finally created a brand name for his home-made product: Divart. Since then his guitars have started to become more well known. “So far, we make most of our sales through online marketing,” he concluded. (kmb28)
Number of HIV cases in Tabanan increases every year
TABANAN - Since HIV cases were discovered in Bali in 1987, the number of cases continues to increase. Based on the data for April 2015 in Tabanan, 44 new cases of people infected with HIV were reported. Secretary of the AIDS Prevention Commission (KPA) of Tabanan, Ketut Randem, explained that the rising numbers means that more and more cases are being discovered and treatment. When the hidden HIV cases are revealed, eventually the rise of numbers on the graph will slope and decrease. However, apparently after more than 28 years of fighting against
HIV, the graph still shows an increase meaning that there are still many HIV cases that have not been discovered and treated. Randem went on to say that HIV transmission has begun to shift to sexual transmission so that the virus is more likely to spread through high risk behaviour. This also causes the points of case discovery to be broader as well as an increase in the number of cases. “On that account, we are disseminating information about HIV not only to people with high risk factors, but also those with low risk factors,” he said. People with low risk factors
as described by Randem include housewives and children. “Housewives who stay at home are exposed to HIV because their husbands have sex with multiple partners or hire the services of prostitutes,” he said. More sadly, the HIV virus that formerly only threatened drug users (through intravenous drug use) and those engaged in high risk sexual behaviour, is now being found in infants and children who have the HIV virus transmitted to them by their infected parents. Randem said that due to changes in transmission patterns, it is important to disseminate pre-
ventative information to various different segments of society. Also because of the increasing number of cases, health services need to be able to reach people throughout the region. For 2015, the government of Tabanan has prepared VCT services at each health center in Tabanan. “That way, the HIV patients who live outside of the city do not need to come to the county hospital to receive health care because VCT will be provided in every health center by the end of 2015,” he explained. The current challenge of the KPA Tabanan, added Randem, is

She and husband Mohammad Hasanur Rahman have asked the government to help bring their son back from Indonesia. Thousands of people, mostly Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar and Bangladeshis, have been trying to slip into Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia for years through a people-smuggling network. Some have paid huge sums to board fishing boats while some others have been trafficked, their families say. Rahman said his 23-year-old son went missing a year ago from the Bangladeshi port of Cox’s Bazar, where he had gone with friends to celebrate the Bangla New Year. He said people in the area told him his son was among several who were forced into boats and taken away. U.S.’s Kerry breaks leg in cycling accident in Alps, returns home
GENEVA - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry broke his right leg in an accident while cycling in the Alps near Scionzier, France, on Sunday and is returning to the United States, his spokesman said. He has cancelled visits to Madrid and Paris. Kerry broke his right femur but the injury is not life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery, the spokesman said. He was taken to a Geneva hospital after being injured and was in stable condition. The accident occurred while Kerry was out cycling the day after meetings with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Geneva to try to overcome obstacles in negotiations on curbing Tehran’s nuclear programme. He was flown by medical helicopter from the

The ECB’s decision-making governing council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday but is unlikely to announce any new policy moves, central bank watchers predicted. Instead, analysts said they would be listening out for what president Mario Draghi has to say about the effectiveness of the programme so far and about the situation in Greece. “At its June press conference, the ECB is unlikely to announce any major new policy measures and will argue that its past actions are already yielding results,” said Ben May of Oxford Economics. In March, the ECB embarked on a programme of so-called quantitative easing or QE, buying up 1.14 trillion euros in assets -- at a monthly rate of 60 billion euros per month -- until September 2016. The aim is to inject liquidity into the financial system and push up the eurozone’s chronically low rate of inflation. Executive board member Benoit Coeure caused a stir two weeks ago when he announced that the ECB could “frontload”
-- or temporarily ramp up -- the purchases prior to the summer drop-off in liquidity. “This has been interpreted by many in the markets as a statement of intent from the ECB to prevent yields from rising to levels that could threaten the still reasonably fragile economic recovery,” May said. Draghi, probably satisfied by the impact of Coeure’s comments, could state that the change in plan was “merely a tweak for technical reasons,” the expert said. But he was unlikely to rule out more frontloading if the ECB perceived it to be justified by the underlying macroeconomic backdrop, May argued. According to the minutes of the governing council’s last meeting in April, while the central bank chiefs saw a case for “guarded optimism on the short to medium-term outlook for the euro area economy,” they still felt it was important “to remain cautious” given the prevailing economic headwinds. Ketut Merta, Head of the Putrayasa group of breeders from Tenganan Dauh Tukad customary village, Manggis, said that the groups owns 14 cows that were provided by the central government through the Organic Fertilizer Processing Unit (UPPO) last year. One of the stipulations of the assistance, is that the 41 group members be responsible for caring for and breeding the cows. “Now, the problem is finding grass. That’s why we have been feeding them green coconut leaves and banana trees,” said Merta. Apart from having trouble obtaining fodder, the Putrayasa group has also had trouble providing the cows with enough water. Members of the group used to have to walk two kilometers to the north to fetch the water for their livestock. Fortunately the group has recently been able to resolve this challenge independently by setting up five pumps to bring the water to the cows. Meanwhile, the problem of feeding the cows remains an issue as the cattle apparently have no interest in eating coconut leaves nor banana
tress. “We are still constrained by lack of capital and technology in addressing the problem of limited fodder,” he explained. To resolve this problem, Merta said that his group have been seeking advice from other groups of breeders in Bali such as those in the area of Bantas, Kubu, Kelating in Tabanan and Melaya in Jembrana. These groups have expanded their cattle breeding businesses and now also breed goats. The Putrayasa group has learned a lot from the groups of breeders at Kelating Tabanan and are now being assisted by the Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship (PPAK) of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry at Udayana University. Through this cooperation, they are now starting to produce their own feed using fermentation technology that will certainly help to ease their burden. The fermentation technology uses a simple method of transforming local organic waste such as rice straw, cassava, cacao husk, coffee skin, sawdust and other woods into feed for their cattle.
These ingredients can be mixed together taking into account various limitations. It is the technique that is crucial in determining whether the feed will be effective or not. A lecturer from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry at Udayana University, I Made Mudita, said on Friday (May 29) that while coaching the breeder group, he explained to them that the application of fermentation technology is one strategiy for improving the quality of fiber-rich feed. “The fermentation technology has proven to be quite effective in producing complete feed from cheap and high quality waste products,” he said. This method is said to be able to great increase the productivity and efficiency of livestock production and is easily implemented by the breeder group members. Two members of Putrayasa, Wayan Murti and Wayan Sujana, said that they have been trying the use this new fodder technology and hope that it will help them to overcome the fodder shortage that has resulted from the recent draught. Drought-hit North Korea seen able to avoid food crisis
SEOUL - North Korea has updated farming methods and switched crops that could help soften the blow of drought and avert a disastrous food shortage, an aid worker and an analyst said on Sunday, after a U.N. official warned of another “huge food deficit”. Impoverished North Korea, which suffered a deadly famine in the 1990s, has seen international food aid fall sharply because of its restrictions on humanitarian workers and reluctance to allow monitoring of food distribution. Food supplies had since improved and production has been at the highest levels, resulting in the lowest shortfall last year since the mid-2000s, according to independent South Korean studies. “Supply this year will be even more stable and any shortfall is likely to be met sufficiently by imports,” said Kwon Tae-jin of the GSnJ Institute in Seoul, an expert on North Korean agriculture. “Improvement in the supply of food isn’t likely by chance or a temporary situation,” he said, crediting an increased allocation of resources in agriculture. Linda Lewis, of the American Friends Service Committee, an NGO running farm projects in North Korea, said she had heard the new farm management system was helping. “The production was okay last year, despite the drought, and there are more coping mechanisms in place this year,” she said. North Korea now al-
lows smaller groups of farmers to keep a greater share of their crops, which they are allowed to sell in markets, which in turn improved distribution. The optimistic outlook follows a warning by the top U.N. official in North Korea of a looming crisis due to last year’s drought, caused by the lowest rainfall in 30 years. “It is going to create a huge deficit between the needs and what is available,” the U.N. resident coordinator for North Korea, Ghulam Isaczai, said. Iran says will discuss “other solutions” to nuclear inspections deadlock
DUBAI - Iran will discuss “other solutions” to Western demands that it allow U.N. inspectors access to its military sites and to interview its nuclear scientists, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was quoted on Sunday as saying. The question of access for international inspectors has become one of the main sticking points between Tehran and six world powers as they try to overcome obstacles to a final nuclear agreement one month before of a deadline. “We have decided to discuss other solutions to resolve this issue,” Zarif was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency, after holding six hours of meetings on Saturday with his U.S. counterpart John Kerry. Western officials say inspections of military sites by U.N. watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and access to Iran’s scientists are critical to checking whether Iran is pursuing a clandestine nuclear weapons programme. Iran denies any ambition to develop a nuclear weapon and says its programme is purely peaceful. The United States and France have threatened to block any deal that does not allow access but Iran’s Supreme Leader has explicitly ruled out any inspections or interviews, creating an obstacle ahead of the June 30 deadline to reach an agreement. Zarif did not give further details about how Iranian negotiators planned to resolve the issue and said there were still several points of difference between Iran and the United States, implying there had been no major breakthrough in his bilateral talks with Kerry. “We have decided to work full time for the next three or four weeks to see whether or not it will be possible to reach an agreement,” he said. The president touched on the Indonesian football team’s achievements in the past decade. “Indonesia did not qualify for the World Cup. In the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup, it only reached the first round in 2004 and did not qualify in 2011,” he pointed out. In FIFA world rankings, Indonesia stood at the 156th position in 2012, 161st in 2013, and 159th in 2014, Jokowi noted. “Do we want to participate in international events and make accomplishments? If we continue to take part in international events only to lose, what can we be proud
of?” he remarked. Jokowi stated that if they do not revamp the PSSI, there will be no change in its achievements. “A complete revamp means total reform of its organization, system and management. At the players’ level, I think they have performed well, but they still need to improve,” Jokowi observed. The PSSI came under the spotlight after the youth and sports affairs minister issued a decree suspending it. However, a panel of judges of the State Administrative Court (PTUN) in East Jakarta decided earlier this
week to suspend the decree on imposing an administrative sanction on the PSSI. The judges were of the view that suspending domestic tournaments, including the Indonesia Super League, and both Premier Division and Division One games, will inflict great losses on the PSSI and PT Liga Indonesia, the organizer of professional soccer competitions in the country. Moreover, the continuation of the livelihood of players, coaches, officials, umpires and other people will also be threatened, the judges pointed out. (ant)

Government to boost use of new, renewable energy JAKARTA - Indonesian minister of energy and mineral resources Sudirman Said said here on Sunday the government would boost the use of new and renewable energy up to 19 percent by 2019 to reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuel. “Right now the use of renewable energy is still between five to six percent and so the government will increase up to 19 percent by 2019,” he said at a media gathering at his ministry. Efforts to increase the use of new and renewable energy must be accelerated and one way to do it is by increasing the budget in the sector next year, he said. He said the government would also initiate creation of energy forests, energy parks and accelerate the installation of gas supply networks in cities. “There will also be a building roof policy. Government buildings in several cities will have solar panels,” he said. The minister said regions with
geothermal potentials would be mapped so that exploration and investment could be done in the sector like in oil and gas exploration. By 2025, he said, it is hoped the new and renewable energy could reach 25 percent. “We must not think pragmatically again. We must not only think for a short-term. Renewable energy is needed to preserve energy sources sustainably so that we will not rely on fossil fuel. The government will also encourage energy conservation by up to 10 percent in 2019,” he said. The government will encourage investors to invest in the energy sector and their investment is expected to reach Rp4000 trillion in the next five years spreading to new and renewable energy sector (Rp500 trillion), electricity sector (Rp1,100 trillion), upstream oil and gas sector at Rp1,200 trillion, downstream oil and gas sector Rp600 trillion and coal and mineral resource sector at Rp600 trillion. JAKARTA - Industry minister Saleh Husin has expressed optimism that industrialization outside Java especially in the eastern regions would be realized in view of the regions’ abundant natural resources. “Indonesian eastern regions are rich with natural resources especially minerals and marine products and so I have strong conviction that industrialization in the eastern regions would grow fast,” he said in a general lecture at Sumbawa University of Technology according to a press release received on Sunday. He said contribution from the industrial sector to the country Gross Domestic Product had so far been dominated by industries located in Java reaching 75 percent. However non-oil/gas processing industries have slowly been moving to outside Java, from 24.63 percent in 2008 to 27.22 percent in 2013. Contribution from Papua, Maluku, Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi to the additional value of the national non-oil/gas industrial sector was still relatively small at only around 2.78 percent, he said. The minister said another encouraging thing is that non-oil/gas
industrial growth outside Java has been recorded at 6.56 percent which is higher than in Java which is 5.99 percent. He said right now the national industrial development policy would be focused on development of industrial zones outside Java. The government has already planned to develop 14 new industrial zones outside Java and facilitate the development of 22 small and medium industrial centers in the next five years, he said. The industrial development policy is also aimed at boosting population of industries to 9,000 medium and large-scale industrial businesses with 50 percent of them expected outside Java and 20,000 units of small and medium industries with competitiveness and productivity to increase the value of exports and added value of the manpower. “So I invite the UTS academic community members to play an active role in contributing creative ideas and breakthroughs in an effort to develop industries in the Indonesian eastern regions and respond to industrial problems in the regions,” he said. The Orlando Magic named Scott Skiles as head coach on Friday with hopes that the former Magic fan favorite can lead the team back to the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2012. The 51-year-old Skiles, who spent five seasons of his NBA playing career with Orlando, succeeds James Borrego, who was named interim coach when Jacque Vaughn was fired in February after two-and-a-half seasons with the team. Skiles compiled a .506 winning percentage in 13 seasons as a head coach of the Phoenix Suns, Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks, including six trips to the playoffs. “Our young roster will benefit greatly from Scott’s extensive head coaching experience and commitment to teaching smart, physical, unselfish basketball,” Magic general manager Rob Hennigan said in a statement. “We believe in Scott’s ability to establish a culture of winning habits and accountability that will help guide our team in a posi-
tive direction.” Orlando finished with the NBA’s fifth-worst record last season with a 25-57 record that left them 35 games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Skiles made his NBA head coaching debut 20 games into the 1999-00 season when he took over in Phoenix. He led the Suns to a 4022 mark the rest of the way before upsetting the defending champion San Antonio Spurs in the opening round of the playoffs. During four seasons with Chicago, Skiles led the Bulls to three straight playoff appearances but he was fired early in the 2007-08 season after Chicago got off to a 9-16 start that left them last in their division. Skiles led Milwaukee to an eight-game improvement in his first season in charge. They improved by 12 games the next year and made the playoffs. Button warns Canadian GP will hurt McLaren’s weaknesses
Jenson Button is already preaching caution ahead of a Canadian Grand Prix he feels could underline the 2015 McLaren-Honda Formula 1 car’s weaknesses. There was relief all round inside the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking when Button secured the team’s first points of the season with eighth place in Monaco, with its slow, twisty streets ideal for the MP4-30. Next up, however, is a run of power tracks, starting with Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and followed by the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone. Honda chief Yasuhisa Arai has already stated more horsepower is needed for the coming races if McLaren is to maintain its upward progress. Although naturally happy with the steps taken by McLaren and Honda since a troubled pre-season, Button is also wary of a venue of Montreal’s nature striking at the team’s Achilles heel. “In the first race we qualified on the back row, and now we’re qualifying much higher,” assessed Button, who would have qualified in the top 10 in Monaco but for yellow flags. “Every race we have gained
a couple of places in qualifying, we’ve got closer and closer, a general step forward we’ve had every race. “But I think the next race we won’t have a step forward in terms of performance because there are a lot of long straights. It is a circuit that won’t suit us well. “But you never know, we might still get some points there. “We both enjoy Canada, but it won’t be as easy there to score points, and then we’re on to Austria where we have some more updates. “Hopefully we will see better performances more consistently through to the end of the year.” Button concedes it is the continual improvement from the team that has kept the spirits high of both himself and team-mate Fernando Alonso over these past few
months. “If you’re not at the front fighting for wins, you might as well be where we’ve been,” suggested Button. “The thing is we’ve been seeing improvements. It’s not like we’ve been sitting still. “If you are sitting still and near the back it’s bloody tough, but when you’re with a new project and things are improving every race it keeps you positive, even if, like Fernando and myself, you’ve been at the front for many years. “And when I talk about improving I don’t just mean laptimes, I mean with the way we work, the understanding between McLaren and Honda, the progress in many different areas. “All good things that are worth fighting for take time, a lot of effort, energy and mental strength.” (ap)

FA Cup wins must fuel title challenge, says Walcott
LONDON - Arsenal must not rest on their laurels after successive FA Cup victories and instead use one of the side’s “best squads” to inspire them to Premier League glory next season, according to forward Theo Walcott. The England international scored the opening goal in Arsenal’s 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa at Wembley on Saturday as the Gunners retained the trophy they won against Hull City the previous season. In the Premier League, however, Arsenal, who have not won the title since 2004, were never a factor in the title race and finished 12 points behind champions Chelsea in third place. The Gunners were languishing in sixth place at the turn of the year but finished the season in blistering form and registered impressive away wins against Manchester City and Manchester United in the league and cup respectively. Those victories fueled talk that the Gunners had finally added substance to their style and Walcott said the north London side would set their ambitions high next season. “The Premier League has to be the next
target for us,” the 26-year-old, who scored a hat-trick in their final league match against West Bromwich Albion last week, told the BBC. “That’s two FA Cup wins now but this is one of the best squads we have had at Arsenal so we should be achieving more. We need to start well in the Premier League next year. “This team is blessed and there’s got to be many more next year.” Walcott’s campaign has been disrupted by injury but he has finished the season strongly and he is just one of a plethora of attacking options available to manager Arsene Wenger. It was also a record-extending 27th King’s Cup title for the Catalans who have also won La Liga this season and will meet Juventus in the Champions League final in Berlin next Saturday. “They pressed us at the beginning but after that we were the better side,” Neymar told reporters. FIFA’s Blatter comes out fighting despite scandal and divisions
ZURICH - FIFA President Sepp Blatter came out fighting on Saturday as he began his fifth term in charge of soccer’s governing body, implying that the United States timed the announcement of a major corruption probe to try to scupper his re-election bid. The 79year-old Swiss comfortably won Friday’s vote at a FIFA congress in Zurich, having secured the support of blocks of votes from Asia and Africa, which outweighed dissenters including Europe’s powerful soccer body UEFA. He now faces the daunting task of restoring public faith in an organisation tainted by allegations of rampant graft and deeply divided over his leadership. Swiss police arrested seven leading soccer officials, including FIFA vice-president Jeffrey Webb, in a dawn swoop on a Zurich hotel on Wednesday. One of Blatter’s strongest critics, English Football Association Chairman Greg Dyke, predicted further scandals before the end of his new fouryear term. “I think he (Blatter) will be then forced to resign,” he told reporters. But Blatter, who has run FIFA for nearly 20 years during which it has regularly been subject to suspicions of sleaze and corruption, went on the offensive, criticising U.S. authorities for how they had handled their investigation. “No one is going to take it off me that it was a simple coincidence (that) this American attack (happened) two days before the elections of FIFA,” Blatter told the Swiss RTS television channel late on Friday. “Why didn’t they (the police) do this in March when we had the same meeting? At that time, we had less journalists.” Asked about Blatter’s remarks, a U.S. Department of Justice official said “the 47-count indictment speaks for itself, beyond which we will have no further comment at this time.” The federal indictment unsealed on Wednesday charged a total of nine soccer officials and five sports marketing executives with corruption. The indictment, and Wednesday’s arrests, were connected to a bribery scandal being investigated by U.S., Swiss and other law enforcement agencies that has plunged FIFA into the worst crisis in its 111-year history. The Justice Department official, who asked not to be named, noted U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch was asked at a news conference this week about the timing of the arrests
and said, “we basically resolve cases when the evidence comes together, when they’re ready for a resolution.” Blatter also criticised UEFA, whose president, Michel Platini, had called for his resignation, saying it was not setting a good example to other soccer federations. He told reporters on Saturday that UEFA had opposed a proposal to set up an independent committee to carry out integrity checks on executive committee members before they could take office. “This was rejected by UEFA so it couldn’t go through,” he said. “Even now, the big UEFA doesn’t have an independent ethics committee, (but) they should be an example for the other confederations... It’s not acceptable.” He did, however, call for the two groups to work together, particularly to protect the World Cup. “They need FIFA and FIFA needs UEFA,” Blatter said. ROYAL REPRIMAND
Britain’s Prince William, who is president of the English FA, called on FIFA to reform and show “it can represent the interests of fair play” in a speech at the FA Cup final in London on Saturday. The prince also backed the decision by former Manchester United chief executive and newly elected FIFA vice-president David Gill to quit the position almost immediately in protest at Blatter’s re-appointment.
Blatter played down the impact of the scandal on one of the world’s most powerful sports bodies, which takes in billions of dollars in revenue from TV marketing rights and sponsorships. “These crimes which have been committed are related to North and South America and a marketing company has been mentioned, so I do not see how (FIFA) could be directly affected by this.” “We have always tried, in my tenure of office, to eliminate all these elements or individuals.” Blatter has not been implicated in any wrongdoing, but his critics have argued it is time for him to step down. His supporters welcomed the outcome of a vote that saw him fend off a sole challenger, 39-year-old Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan. That support reflects Blatter’s success in expanding FIFA’s membership away from soccer’s heartlands and in exploiting resentment in Africa and Asia over the perceived arrogance of the game’s powerhouse nations in Europe and South America.Despite Blatter’s re-election, the scandal surrounding the investigations into corruption looks set to rumble on. Platini has raised the possibility, albeit slim, of Europe boycotting the World Cup tournament, soccer’s showcase played every four years. MEXICO CITY - Controversial former Mexico coach Ricardo La Volpe has been named coach of Chiapas Jaguares 13 months after being sacked by Guadalajara for inappropriate conduct towards a female employee. Argentine La Volpe, who led Mexico to the last 16 at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, was sacked for misconduct after less than a month in charge of Guadalajara. “Ricardo Antonio La Volpe has become head coach of the team from the southeast of Mexico for (next season’s) 2015 Apertura and 2016 Clausura tournaments,” the club announced in a statement on Saturday. The 63-year-old, who is known as “Bigoton” because his big moustache, has spent the bulk of his career in Mexico winning the league title with Atlante in 1993.

PARIS - Paris St Germain achieved a unique domestic treble when Edinson Cavani’s goal secured a 1-0 French Cup final victory over Ligue 2 team AJ Auxerre on Saturday. Cavani headed home in the 65th minute to hand PSG their third trophy of the season, adding to their Ligue 1 and League Cup triumphs. It was the capital club’s ninth French Cup title and moves them within one of the record held by bitter rivals Olympique de Marseille. FA Cup wins must fuel title challenge, says Walcott
LONDON - Arsenal must not rest on their laurels after successive FA Cup victories and instead use one of the side’s “best squads” to inspire them to Premier League glory next season, according to forward Theo Walcott. The England international scored the opening goal in Arsenal’s 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa at Wembley on Saturday as the Gunners retained the trophy they won against Hull City the previous season. In the Premier League, however, Arsenal, who have not won the title since 2004, were never a factor in the title race and finished 12 points behind champions Chelsea in third place. The Gunners were languishing in sixth place at the turn of the year but finished the season in blistering form and registered impressive away wins against Manchester City and Manchester United in the league and cup respectively. Those victories fueled talk that the Gunners had finally added substance to their style and Walcott said the north London side would set their ambitions high next season. “The Premier League has to be the next

FIFA’s Blatter comes out fighting despite scandal and divisions
ZURICH - FIFA President Sepp Blatter came out fighting on Saturday as he began his fifth term in charge of soccer’s governing body, implying that the United States timed the announcement of a major corruption probe to try to scupper his re-election bid. The 79year-old Swiss comfortably won Friday’s vote at a FIFA congress in Zurich, having secured the support of blocks of votes from Asia and Africa, which outweighed dissenters including Europe’s powerful soccer body UEFA. He now faces the daunting task of restoring public faith in an organisation tainted by allegations of rampant graft and deeply divided over his leadership. Swiss police arrested seven leading soccer officials, including FIFA vice-president Jeffrey Webb, in a dawn swoop on a Zurich hotel on Wednesday. One of Blatter’s strongest critics, English Football Association Chairman Greg Dyke, predicted further scandals before the end of his new fouryear term. “I think he (Blatter) will be then forced to resign,” he told reporters. But Blatter, who has run FIFA for nearly 20 years during which it has regularly been subject to suspicions of sleaze and corruption, went on the offensive, criticising U.S. authorities for how they had handled their investigation. “No one is going to take it off me that it was a simple coincidence (that) this American attack (happened) two days before the elections of FIFA,” Blatter told the Swiss RTS television channel late on Friday. “Why didn’t they (the police) do this in March when we had the same meeting? At that time, we had less journalists.” Asked about Blatter’s remarks, a U.S. Department of Justice official said “the 47-count indictment speaks for itself, beyond which we will have no further comment at this time.” The federal indictment unsealed on Wednesday charged a total of nine soccer officials and five sports marketing executives with corruption. The indictment, and Wednesday’s arrests, were connected to a bribery scandal being investigated by U.S., Swiss and other law enforcement agencies that has plunged FIFA into the worst crisis in its 111-year history. The Justice Department official, who asked not to be named, noted U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch was asked at a news conference this week about the timing of the arrests
and said, “we basically resolve cases when the evidence comes together, when they’re ready for a resolution.” Blatter also criticised UEFA, whose president, Michel Platini, had called for his resignation, saying it was not setting a good example to other soccer federations. He told reporters on Saturday that UEFA had opposed a proposal to set up an independent committee to carry out integrity checks on executive committee members before they could take office. “This was rejected by UEFA so it couldn’t go through,” he said. “Even now, the big UEFA doesn’t have an independent ethics committee, (but) they should be an example for the other confederations... It’s not acceptable.” He did, however, call for the two groups to work together, particularly to protect the World Cup. “They need FIFA and FIFA needs UEFA,” Blatter said. ROYAL REPRIMAND
Britain’s Prince William, who is president of the English FA, called on FIFA to reform and show “it can represent the interests of fair play” in a speech at the FA Cup final in London on Saturday. The prince also backed the decision by former Manchester United chief executive and newly elected FIFA vice-president David Gill to quit the position almost immediately in protest at Blatter’s re-appointment.
Blatter played down the impact of the scandal on one of the world’s most powerful sports bodies, which takes in billions of dollars in revenue from TV marketing rights and sponsorships. “These crimes which have been committed are related to North and South America and a marketing company has been mentioned, so I do not see how (FIFA) could be directly affected by this.” “We have always tried, in my tenure of office, to eliminate all these elements or individuals.” Blatter has not been implicated in any wrongdoing, but his critics have argued it is time for him to step down. His supporters welcomed the outcome of a vote that saw him fend off a sole challenger, 39-year-old Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan. That support reflects Blatter’s success in expanding FIFA’s membership away from soccer’s heartlands and in exploiting resentment in Africa and Asia over the perceived arrogance of the game’s powerhouse nations in Europe and South America.Despite Blatter’s re-election, the scandal surrounding the investigations into corruption looks set to rumble on. Platini has raised the possibility, albeit slim, of Europe boycotting the World Cup tournament, soccer’s showcase played every four years. MEXICO CITY - Controversial former Mexico coach Ricardo La Volpe has been named coach of Chiapas Jaguares 13 months after being sacked by Guadalajara for inappropriate conduct towards a female employee. Argentine La Volpe, who led Mexico to the last 16 at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, was sacked for misconduct after less than a month in charge of Guadalajara. “Ricardo Antonio La Volpe has become head coach of the team from the southeast of Mexico for (next season’s) 2015 Apertura and 2016 Clausura tournaments,” the club announced in a statement on Saturday. The 63-year-old, who is known as “Bigoton” because his big moustache, has spent the bulk of his career in Mexico winning the league title with Atlante in 1993.

The Orlando Magic named Scott Skiles as head coach on Friday with hopes that the former Magic fan favorite can lead the team back to the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2012. The 51-year-old Skiles, who spent five seasons of his NBA playing career with Orlando, succeeds James Borrego, who was named interim coach when Jacque Vaughn was fired in February after two-and-a-half seasons with the team. Skiles compiled a .506 winning percentage in 13 seasons as a head coach of the Phoenix Suns, Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks, including six trips to the playoffs. “Our young roster will benefit greatly from Scott’s extensive head coaching experience and commitment to teaching smart, physical, unselfish basketball,” Magic general manager Rob Hennigan said in a statement. “We believe in Scott’s ability to establish a culture of winning habits and accountability that will help guide our team in a posi-
tive direction.” Orlando finished with the NBA’s fifth-worst record last season with a 25-57 record that left them 35 games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Skiles made his NBA head coaching debut 20 games into the 1999-00 season when he took over in Phoenix. He led the Suns to a 4022 mark the rest of the way before upsetting the defending champion San Antonio Spurs in the opening round of the playoffs. During four seasons with Chicago, Skiles led the Bulls to three straight playoff appearances but he was fired early in the 2007-08 season after Chicago got off to a 9-16 start that left them last in their division. Skiles led Milwaukee to an eight-game improvement in his first season in charge. They improved by 12 games the next year and made the playoffs. PARIS - Rain stopped play at the French Open on Sunday with home favourite Alize Cornet in trouble against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina on Court Philippe Chatrier. French number one Cornet, appearing the last 16 at Roland Garros for the first time, was trailing 3-0 and Svitolina had a game point to extend her lead when rain began to fall. Play was suspended on all courts and with inclement weather forecast for most of Sunday, a lengthy delay is expected. Former champion Ana Ivanovic was also in early action and was

Button warns Canadian GP will hurt McLaren’s weaknesses
Jenson Button is already preaching caution ahead of a Canadian Grand Prix he feels could underline the 2015 McLaren-Honda Formula 1 car’s weaknesses. There was relief all round inside the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking when Button secured the team’s first points of the season with eighth place in Monaco, with its slow, twisty streets ideal for the MP4-30. Next up, however, is a run of power tracks, starting with Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and followed by the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone. Honda chief Yasuhisa Arai has already stated more horsepower is needed for the coming races if McLaren is to maintain its upward progress. Although naturally happy with the steps taken by McLaren and Honda since a troubled pre-season, Button is also wary of a venue of Montreal’s nature striking at the team’s Achilles heel. “In the first race we qualified on the back row, and now we’re qualifying much higher,” assessed Button, who would have qualified in the top 10 in Monaco but for yellow flags. “Every race we have gained
a couple of places in qualifying, we’ve got closer and closer, a general step forward we’ve had every race. “But I think the next race we won’t have a step forward in terms of performance because there are a lot of long straights. It is a circuit that won’t suit us well. “But you never know, we might still get some points there. “We both enjoy Canada, but it won’t be as easy there to score points, and then we’re on to Austria where we have some more updates. “Hopefully we will see better performances more consistently through to the end of the year.” Button concedes it is the continual improvement from the team that has kept the spirits high of both himself and team-mate Fernando Alonso over these past few
months. “If you’re not at the front fighting for wins, you might as well be where we’ve been,” suggested Button. “The thing is we’ve been seeing improvements. It’s not like we’ve been sitting still. “If you are sitting still and near the back it’s bloody tough, but when you’re with a new project and things are improving every race it keeps you positive, even if, like Fernando and myself, you’ve been at the front for many years. “And when I talk about improving I don’t just mean laptimes, I mean with the way we work, the understanding between McLaren and Honda, the progress in many different areas. “All good things that are worth fighting for take time, a lot of effort, energy and mental strength.” (ap)

Drought-hit North Korea seen able to avoid food crisis
SEOUL - North Korea has updated farming methods and switched crops that could help soften the blow of drought and avert a disastrous food shortage, an aid worker and an analyst said on Sunday, after a U.N. official warned of another “huge food deficit”. Impoverished North Korea, which suffered a deadly famine in the 1990s, has seen international food aid fall sharply because of its restrictions on humanitarian workers and reluctance to allow monitoring of food distribution. Food supplies had since improved and production has been at the highest levels, resulting in the lowest shortfall last year since the mid-2000s, according to independent South Korean studies. “Supply this year will be even more stable and any shortfall is likely to be met sufficiently by imports,” said Kwon Tae-jin of the GSnJ Institute in Seoul, an expert on North Korean agriculture. “Improvement in the supply of food isn’t likely by chance or a temporary situation,” he said, crediting an increased allocation of resources in agriculture. Linda Lewis, of the American Friends Service Committee, an NGO running farm projects in North Korea, said she had heard the new farm management system was helping. “The production was okay last year, despite the drought, and there are more coping mechanisms in place this year,” she said. North Korea now al-
lows smaller groups of farmers to keep a greater share of their crops, which they are allowed to sell in markets, which in turn improved distribution. The optimistic outlook follows a warning by the top U.N. official in North Korea of a looming crisis due to last year’s drought, caused by the lowest rainfall in 30 years. “It is going to create a huge deficit between the needs and what is available,” the U.N. resident coordinator for North Korea, Ghulam Isaczai, said. North Korean state media last week highlighted the push to step up rice production with “a scientific farming method including the watersaving farming method”, KCNA news agency said. It didn’t elaborate. Kwon said part of the success had been in diversifying crops, with wheat, barley and potatoes planted after the fall rice harvest. DUBAI - Iran will discuss “other solutions” to Western demands that it allow U.N. inspectors access to its military sites and to interview its nuclear scientists, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was quoted on Sunday as saying. The question of access for international inspectors has become one of the main sticking points between Tehran and six world powers as they try to overcome obstacles to a final nuclear agreement one month before of a deadline. “We have decided to discuss other solutions to resolve this issue,” Zarif was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency, after holding six hours of meetings on Saturday with his U.S. counterpart John Kerry. Western officials say inspections of military sites by U.N. watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and access to Iran’s scientists are critical to checking whether Iran is pursuing a clandestine nuclear weapons programme. Iran denies any ambition to develop a nuclear weapon and says its programme is purely peaceful. The United States and France have threatened to block any deal that does not allow access but Iran’s Supreme Leader has explicitly ruled out any inspections or interviews, creating an obstacle ahead of the June 30 deadline to reach an agreement. Zarif did not give further details about how Iranian negotiators planned to resolve the issue and said there were still several points of difference between Iran and the United States, implying there had been no major breakthrough in his bilateral talks with Kerry. “We have decided to work full time for the next three or four weeks to see whether or not it will be possible to reach an agreement,” he said. Government to boost use of new, renewable energy JAKARTA - Indonesian minister of energy and mineral resources Sudirman Said said here on Sunday the government would boost the use of new and renewable energy up to 19 percent by 2019 to reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuel. “Right now the use of renewable energy is still between five to six percent and so the government will increase up to 19 percent by 2019,” he said at a media gathering at his ministry. Efforts to increase the use of new and renewable energy must be accelerated and one way to do it is by increasing the budget in the sector next year, he said. He said the government would also initiate creation of energy forests, energy parks and accelerate the installation of gas supply networks in cities. “There will also be a building roof policy. Government buildings in several cities will have solar panels,” he said. The minister said regions with
geothermal potentials would be mapped so that exploration and investment could be done in the sector like in oil and gas exploration. By 2025, he said, it is hoped the new and renewable energy could reach 25 percent. “We must not think pragmatically again. We must not only think for a short-term. Renewable energy is needed to preserve energy sources sustainably so that we will not rely on fossil fuel. The government will also encourage energy conservation by up to 10 percent in 2019,” he said. The government will encourage investors to invest in the energy sector and their investment is expected to reach Rp4000 trillion in the next five years spreading to new and renewable energy sector (Rp500 trillion), electricity sector (Rp1,100 trillion), upstream oil and gas sector at Rp1,200 trillion, downstream oil and gas sector Rp600 trillion and coal and mineral resource sector at Rp600 trillion. JAKARTA - Industry minister Saleh Husin has expressed optimism that industrialization outside Java especially in the eastern regions would be realized in view of the regions’ abundant natural resources. “Indonesian eastern regions are rich with natural resources especially minerals and marine products and so I have strong conviction that industrialization in the eastern regions would grow fast,” he said in a general lecture at Sumbawa University of Technology according to a press release received on Sunday. He said contribution from the industrial sector to the country Gross Domestic Product had so far been dominated by industries located in Java reaching 75 percent. However non-oil/gas processing industries have slowly been moving to outside Java, from 24.63 percent in 2008 to 27.22 percent in 2013. Contribution from Papua, Maluku, Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi to the additional value of the national non-oil/gas industrial sector was still relatively small at only around 2.78 percent, he said. The minister said another encouraging thing is that non-oil/gas
industrial growth outside Java has been recorded at 6.56 percent which is higher than in Java which is 5.99 percent. He said right now the national industrial development policy would be focused on development of industrial zones outside Java. The government has already planned to develop 14 new industrial zones outside Java and facilitate the development of 22 small and medium industrial centers in the next five years, he said. The industrial development policy is also aimed at boosting population of industries to 9,000 medium and large-scale industrial businesses with 50 percent of them expected outside Java and 20,000 units of small and medium industries with competitiveness and productivity to increase the value of exports and added value of the manpower. “So I invite the UTS academic community members to play an active role in contributing creative ideas and breakthroughs in an effort to develop industries in the Indonesian eastern regions and respond to industrial problems in the regions,” he said. The ECB’s decision-making governing council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday but is unlikely to announce any new policy moves, central bank watchers predicted. Instead, analysts said they would be listening out for what president Mario Draghi has to say about the effectiveness of the programme so far and about the situation in Greece. “At its June press conference, the ECB is unlikely to announce any major new policy measures and will argue that its past actions are already yielding results,” said Ben May of Oxford Economics. In March, the ECB embarked on a programme of so-called quantitative easing or QE, buying up 1.14 trillion euros in assets -- at a monthly rate of 60 billion euros per month -- until September 2016. The aim is to inject liquidity into the financial system and push up the eurozone’s chronically low rate of inflation. Executive board member Benoit Coeure caused a stir two weeks ago when he announced that the ECB could “frontload”
-- or temporarily ramp up -- the purchases prior to the summer drop-off in liquidity. “This has been interpreted by many in the markets as a statement of intent from the ECB to prevent yields from rising to levels that could threaten the still reasonably fragile economic recovery,” May said. Draghi, probably satisfied by the impact of Coeure’s comments, could state that the change in plan was “merely a tweak for technical reasons,” the expert said. But he was unlikely to rule out more frontloading if the ECB perceived it to be justified by the underlying macroeconomic backdrop, May argued. According to the minutes of the governing council’s last meeting in April, while the central bank chiefs saw a case for “guarded optimism on the short to medium-term outlook for the euro area economy,” they still felt it was important “to remain cautious” given the prevailing economic headwinds. The plain truth is that despite almost two decades of effort, most aren’t close to where they need to be,” says

Ketut Merta, Head of the Putrayasa group of breeders from Tenganan Dauh Tukad customary village, Manggis, said that the groups owns 14 cows that were provided by the central government through the Organic Fertilizer Processing Unit (UPPO) last year. One of the stipulations of the assistance, is that the 41 group members be responsible for caring for and breeding the cows. “Now, the problem is finding grass. That’s why we have been feeding them green coconut leaves and banana trees,” said Merta. Apart from having trouble obtaining fodder, the Putrayasa group has also had trouble providing the cows with enough water. Members of the group used to have to walk two kilometers to the north to fetch the water for their livestock. Fortunately the group has recently been able to resolve this challenge independently by setting up five pumps to bring the water to the cows. Meanwhile, the problem of feeding the cows remains an issue as the cattle apparently have no interest in eating coconut leaves nor banana
tress. “We are still constrained by lack of capital and technology in addressing the problem of limited fodder,” he explained. To resolve this problem, Merta said that his group have been seeking advice from other groups of breeders in Bali such as those in the area of Bantas, Kubu, Kelating in Tabanan and Melaya in Jembrana. These groups have expanded their cattle breeding businesses and now also breed goats. The Putrayasa group has learned a lot from the groups of breeders at Kelating Tabanan and are now being assisted by the Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship (PPAK) of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry at Udayana University. Through this cooperation, they are now starting to produce their own feed using fermentation technology that will certainly help to ease their burden. The fermentation technology uses a simple method of transforming local organic waste such as rice straw, cassava, cacao husk, coffee skin, sawdust and other woods into feed for their cattle.
These ingredients can be mixed together taking into account various limitations. It is the technique that is crucial in determining whether the feed will be effective or not. A lecturer from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry at Udayana University, I Made Mudita, said on Friday (May 29) that while coaching the breeder group, he explained to them that the application of fermentation technology is one strategiy for improving the quality of fiber-rich feed. “The fermentation technology has proven to be quite effective in producing complete feed from cheap and high quality waste products,” he said. This method is said to be able to great increase the productivity and efficiency of livestock production and is easily implemented by the breeder group members. Two members of Putrayasa, Wayan Murti and Wayan Sujana, said that they have been trying the use this new fodder technology and hope that it will help them to overcome the fodder shortage that has resulted from the recent draught. Guitars made by Tabanan artist in demand by national market
TABANAN - Aside from having a myriad of attractions that can be visited, Tabanan County also has a number of artists whose works are popular all over Indonesia and beyond. One such artist is 45 year old guitar maker I Putu Sunarta, from Dukuh hamlet, Penebel. His guitars are not only popular with locals but are also in demand by national and international markets including customers in the Netherlands and the United States.

Sunarta’s guitars are more attractive that common guitars because of the creative touch that he gives to them by carving their bodies. Wanting to maintain a Balinese nuance, Sunarta mainly applies Balinese ornaments to these instruments. “Many customers order the guitars that are embellished with Balinese carvings. But sometimes we don’t have enough people to fill all the orders, because we only have three people who can make the guitars,” revealed Sunarta recently. While putting the final touches on one of his guitars, Sunarta told of how he came to pursue the guitar making business, which has begun to gain customers from all over the country. Curious about why some guitars cost so much more that other, he bought an acoustic guitar for IDR 1 million. Not satisfied with the sound that it produced, he took it apar and tried to figure out how to make it produce a better sound. “This is how I started to learn about guitar making. I now also have a small guitar repair business.” he said. Apart from repairing guitars, Sunarta’s obsession with being able to make quality guitars according to various specifications, continues to rage on. Sunarta uses mahogany, maple, cypress and Indian rosewood to make his guitars. “It also depends on the order, but I predominantly use mahogany from Jepara, Java,” he said. He explained that the time required for making a guitar depends on the level of complexity. The fastest that a standard acoustic guitar without carvings can be completed is two weeks. Guitars with carvings can sometimes take him up to a month to make depending on the complexity of the carving. As for the his prices, Sunarta is apparently not willing sell for a very high price. He sells his standard acoustic guitars for between IDR 1 and 12 million, depending on the specications. His carvings or ornaments are mostly inspired by the Mahabharata epic or motifs taken from traditional Balinese carvings. In addition, he also accepts orders for tailor-made guitar carvings based in the customers desire. At the end of 2013, Sunarta finally created a brand name for his home-made product: Divart. Since then his guitars have started to become more well known. “So far, we make most of our sales through online marketing,” he concluded. (kmb28)
Number of HIV cases in Tabanan increases every year
TABANAN - Since HIV cases were discovered in Bali in 1987, the number of cases continues to increase. Based on the data for April 2015 in Tabanan, 44 new cases of people infected with HIV were reported. Secretary of the AIDS Prevention Commission (KPA) of Tabanan, Ketut Randem, explained that the rising numbers means that more and more cases are being discovered and treatment. When the hidden HIV cases are revealed, eventually the rise of numbers on the graph will slope and decrease. However, apparently after more than 28 years of fighting against
HIV, the graph still shows an increase meaning that there are still many HIV cases that have not been discovered and treated. Randem went on to say that HIV transmission has begun to shift to sexual transmission so that the virus is more likely to spread through high risk behaviour. This also causes the points of case discovery to be broader as well as an increase in the number of cases. “On that account, we are disseminating information about HIV not only to people with high risk factors, but also those with low risk factors,” he said. People with low risk factors
as described by Randem include housewives and children. “Housewives who stay at home are exposed to HIV because their husbands have sex with multiple partners or hire the services of prostitutes,” he said. More sadly, the HIV virus that formerly only threatened drug users (through intravenous drug use) and those engaged in high risk sexual behaviour, is now being found in infants and children who have the HIV virus transmitted to them by their infected parents. Randem said that due to changes in transmission patterns, it is important to disseminate pre-
ventative information to various different segments of society. Also because of the increasing number of cases, health services need to be able to reach people throughout the region. For 2015, the government of Tabanan has prepared VCT services at each health center in Tabanan. “That way, the HIV patients who live outside of the city do not need to come to the county hospital to receive health care because VCT will be provided in every health center by the end of 2015,” he explained. The current challenge of the KPA Tabanan, added Randem, is

She and husband Mohammad Hasanur Rahman have asked the government to help bring their son back from Indonesia. Thousands of people, mostly Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar and Bangladeshis, have been trying to slip into Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia for years through a people-smuggling network. Some have paid huge sums to board fishing boats while some others have been trafficked, their families say. Rahman said his 23-year-old son went missing a year ago from the Bangladeshi port of Cox’s Bazar, where he had gone with friends to celebrate the Bangla New Year. He said people in the area told him his son was among several who were forced into boats and taken away. Mass graves and suspected human-trafficking detention camps have been discovered by Malaysian police in towns and villages bordering Thailand. U.S.’s Kerry breaks leg in cycling accident in Alps, returns home
GENEVA - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry broke his right leg in an accident while cycling in the Alps near Scionzier, France, on Sunday and is returning to the United States, his spokesman said. He has cancelled visits to Madrid and Paris. Kerry broke his right femur but the injury is not life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery, the spokesman said. He was taken to a Geneva hospital after being injured and was in stable condition. The accident occurred while Kerry was out cycling the day after meetings with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Geneva to try to overcome obstacles in negotiations on curbing Tehran’s nuclear programme. He was flown by medical helicopter from the

Holiday in socialist fairyland? North Korea woos tourists
PYONGYANG — If you’re still looking for somewhere exotic to go this summer and don’t mind a vacation that comes with a heavy dose of socialist propaganda and leader worship, North Korea says it’s just the place for you. Fresh off a drastic, half-year ban that closed North Korea’s doors to virtually all foreigners over fears they would spread the Ebola virus — despite the fact that there were no cases of Ebola reported anywhere in Asia — the country is once again determined to show off its “socialist fairyland” to tourists. The focus on tourism is the blessing of Kim Jong Un himself and, in typical fashion, officials have set lofty goals in their effort to please their leader. About 100,000 tourists came to North Korea last year, all but a few thousand of them from neighboring China. Kim Sang Hak, a senior economist at the influential Academy of
Social Sciences, told The Associated Press the North hopes that by around 2017, there will be 10 times as many tourists and that the number will hit 2 million by 2020. Pyongyang’s interest in attracting tourists may sound ironic, or even contradictory, for a country that has taken extreme measures to remain sheltered from the outside world. But Kim said the push, formally endorsed by Kim Jong Un in March 2013, is seen as both a potentially lucrative revenue stream and a means of countering stereotypes of the country as starving, backward and relentlessly bleak. “Tourism can produce a lot of profit relative to the investment

we are also expanding to European countries as well.” While the overall quality of life in North Korea hasn’t shifted much in the past few years, efforts to build attractions for visitors and the infrastructure required to host them are already beginning to change the face of the capital and some scattered special tourism zones recently established across the country. Amid the generally Spartan context of their surroundings, those attractions, which are also used by average North Koreans at much lower fees, can be quite striking. In Pyongyang, some of the more popular tourist sites include a new, high-tech shooting range, where visitors can hunt animated tigers with laser guns or use live ammo to bag real pheasants, which can be prepared to eat right there on the spot. There is also a new equestrian center, a huge water park and revamped “fun fairs” replete with roller coasters, fast-food stands and a 5-D theater. After a year of feverish construction, Pyongyang’s new international airport terminal could open as soon as next month. Outside of the showcase capital, where funds, electricity and adequate lodging are much scarcer, development has been focused on the area around Mount Kumgang and Wonsan, a port city on the east coast. A luxury ski resort was recently opened just outside of Wonsan and a number of new restaurants have sprung up along the city’s beachfront area, which is popular with tourists and locals alike for swimming, clambakes and outdoor barbeques. But like everything else, North Korea is approaching tourism “in its own way.” Tourists of any nationality can expect constant monitoring from ever-watchful guides and a lot of visits to model hospitals, schools and farms, along with well-staged events intended to impress and promote Pyongyang’s unique brand of authoritarian socialism. Like all other visitors to the North, they have precious few opportunities to interact with average people or observe their daily lifestyle. Tourists can also expect severe repercussions if they step out of line. Tours to Mount Kumgang by South Koreans were quite popular for about a decade until 2008, when they were halted after a South Korean housewife who walked into a restricted area was shot dead by a North Korean guard. More recently, an American tourist who impulsively left a Bible in a provincial nightclub was detained for nearly six months until the Pentagon sent a plane to Pyongyang to pick him up. (ap)

Australian yachts arrived at Benoa Port DENPASAR - As many as 17 yachts from Australia arrived at Bali’s Benoa port after sailing in the Wonderful Indonesia Fremantle to Bali trip from Perth. “The yachts plan to stay in Bali until Saturday and will continue their sailing tour of other islands around Bali,” the president director of port operating company PT Pelindo III, Djarwo Surjanto said. The yachts were seen off by Indonesian Consul General Ade Padmo Sarwono on Friday, May 18, for the event, which is organized once in two years. He stated that the event is held in cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism, the West Australia Tourism and Health Ministry, Fremantle Sailing Club, airline company Garuda Indonesia and Pelindo III to develop destinations and infrastructure for cruise ships. Members of the international yacht club headquartered in Australia will be entertained with typical traditional Balinese art performances while on the island, Surjanto added.
In addition, Commodore of Fremantle Sailing Club Bob Kucera pointed out that 20 yachts had participated in the event, but due to some technical difficulties, only 17 had successfully arrived in Bali. Each luxurious yacht can carry six to 12 people on board. Besides their family members who arrived separately earlier, nearly 500 yachting tourists will visit the island for the event. The seamen and their families will not only sail to Bali but will also visit other islands, mostly those in the eastern Indonesian regions, Kucera noted. “Several Australians only consider Bali when they think about Indonesia. However, Indonesia has other attractive islands, as well. In view of that, we are encouraging seamen to also visit those islands,” he affirmed. Benoa has now been included in the international electronic navigation map, attracting a number of cruise ships to call at Bali. TNI Commander calls on soldiers to end sectoral egoism DENPASAR - The Indonesian Defense Forces’ (TNI) Commander General Moeldoko appealed to all soldiers on Thursday to put an end to sectoral egoism. “We must realize interoperability of both intelligence and operations. In realizing it, we must reduce sectoral egoism in all forces,” he affirmed while giving directives to 2,360 soldiers, civil servants, and members of Dharma Pertiwi of the Udayana Regional Command IX. He emphasized that all TNI soldiers must build synergy in their forces by upholding the spirit of unity. The capabilities of TNI personnel must always be boosted through internal improvement that will be reflected in their discipline and combat capabilities. “TNI intelligence is also being continually improved through the strengthening of the Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS),” he pointed out. On the occasion, General Moeldoko also spoke about the issue of remuneration, revealing that it will continue to be increased. “I was once invited to a dinner by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the palace. There I
conveyed to him that the remuneration has not yet been increased,” he remarked. When President Jokowi was invited to the TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap to receive an honorary title from the army’s special force, he stated that the TNI’s remuneration will be increased to 56 percent. “Remuneration is increased to 56 percent from 37 percent. It means that it is up 19 percent. Next year, we will demand more. The condition is that you have to work even harder,” he affirmed. He stressed that in order to be able to improve the welfare of the TNI soldiers, national stability must be maintained, so that the development efforts can be carried out smoothly. “If the nation’s development runs well, the economy will grow to enable the state to allocate sufficient funds in the budget for the TNI,” he noted. In view of this, the TNI must support the government, so that it can function smoothly, he said. “The government’s functioning should not be affected by any party from any quarter. Sacred art of Wayang wong make Bulelleng proud SINGARAJA - Buleleng is worthy of being included as of the regions of Bali that has a rich varied and unique sacred art heritage. The hindus of Tejakula for instance have a unique and sacred art known wayang wong (human puppet—Ed). In order to preserve and promote the arts of the East Buleleng, wayang wong -that uses strorylines taken from puppet theater, has recently begun to be performed at local and national events, whereas in the past it was only performed at temple ceremonies in clan temple of Tejakula.

Komang Gede, one of the leading dancers, while in Singaraja some time ago explained that the birth of the wayang wong art of Tejakula originated in the art of gambuh. Gambuh dancers generally did not wear masks and their movements were accompanied by gamelan music. In the 18th century the art of gambuh was primarily performed for members of the royal families in Bangli. To Gede’s recollection Anak Agung was the one who was especially interested in the appearance of the gambuh dancers and donated a mask to one of the dancers. It is said that this mask was what transformed the gambuh into the wayang wong. “Because Anak Agung from the kingdom of Bangli really liked watching the gambuh art we perform, he donated a mask and since then the mask has inspired gambuh to change into wayang wong and until today the mask that was given remains sacred along with the other masks,” he said. Ever since gambuh transformed into the art of wayang wong, added Komang Gede, the dancers and the gamelan players are increasingly eager to develop and preserve the wayang wong. The masks of the puppet characters that are played are continuously added to and the older ones maintained. However, performances in the past were stage in relation to piodalan or the temple
birthday of the clan temple at Tejakula. Eventually, demands for performances of wayang wong also came from several large temples in Bali on the occasion of their piodalan rituals. It is not surprising that the wayang wong of Tejakula is now regularly performed at temples such as the Ratu Gede Sambangan, Khayangan Dangsil and Beji Temples. “These are some of the temples that always have a performance of wayang wong, for their piodalan. Wayang wong dancers will never reject a request to perform because it is for the sake of physical nature, and we sincerely do the performance as a devotional work,” he said. Recently, the art of wayang wong has started to be performed outside of the ritual context of events such temple birthdays. According to Komang Gede, who is also Head of Buleleng Social Affairs, such non ritual performances are an opportunity for the dancers and gamelan musicians to preserve and introduce wayang wong as a heritage to general public, so that it does not get buried under the variety of modern influences such as television that take up such a large place in cultural landscape. This is the main reason that the Teja Murti wayang wong troupe was finally established in the 1970s. The troupe consisted of 30 dancers and 15 gamelan players who began to perform

The preservation of this sacred dance is also strengthened by the belief that anyone who tries to not carry on this traditional art will have an unhappy life due to sickness. “Because this sacred art is inherited, there must be successor and now our children or grandchildren and our nephews have joined in learning this dance or playing the accompanying gamelan music,” he explained. Rihanna in Cuba’s capital to record music video
HAVANA — Pop star Rihanna drew a crowd Friday while cruising down Havana’s Malecon shore boulevard in a classic American convertible from the 1950s. Children and young people swarmed around the car, using their cellphones to snap pictures of the singer while security guards kept them from getting too close. Cuban state media say Rihanna arrived in Cuba on Wednesday and made an unannounced appearance at the La Fontana restaurant. The media reports say she also has recorded video footage in the capital’s central district of El Vedado and at the La Guarida restaurant, where the Cuban movie “Strawberry and Chocolate” was filmed. NEW YORK — Iggy Azalea has canceled her U.S. tour for a second time. The “Fancy” rapper tweeted Friday “as u may know, the tour is cancelled.” She added that she’s “so sad and sorry to let my fans down.” Azalea announced in March that The Great Escape Tour would not kick off in April. She rescheduled the tour due to production delays and said it would take place this fall. Representatives from Azalea’s record label, Def Jam, and tour promoter, AEG, didn’t return emails seeking comment. Azalea didn’t offer any details about the second cancellation. The Grammy-nominated rapper, whose recent single is “Pretty Girls” with Britney Spears, tweeted that she’ll “be back out on the road when the next album is done.” Azalea said she’s still committed to her upcoming festival performances. Its aim is to improve treatment options at all levels and erase the stigma around mental illnesses. “It’s not something that anyone should be ashamed of,” Lovato said. “The more people talk about it, the more people can come out and get the help they need.” Be Vocal is as much about sufferers voicing their treatment needs as it is about families and communities speaking up for better resources to meet those needs, she said. Lovato’s improved mental state is reflected in her work. “I’d say my music is a lot happier now!” she said with a laugh. The 22-year-old entertainer said she’s recording a new album, which she plans to release on Safehouse Records, the new label that she and partners Nick Jonas and her manager, Phil McIntyre, announced earlier this week. And she’ll continue to advocate for mental health, to make depression and other mental illnesses as easy to discuss as diabetes or the flu. “I didn’t understand why I was going through what I was when I was dealing with all of this, and I realized I could share my story and help others,” she said. “If that’s my purpose for being on Earth, than that’s what I want to do. As witnessed by the hundred or so foreign travellers who drop by the area of Tegallalang, Gianyar everyday. People flock to this location to admire the orderly arrangement of terraced paddy field that line the cliff there. Although a beautiful sight to behold from above, many travelers descend to the bottom of the cliff to take pictures with the terraced paddies as a backdrop. Others enjoy the beauty of Ceking from a distance, namely around the art shop to the west.
The large number of tourist visits, has become a blessing for the people living in the surrounding area who run restaurants and craft shops that sell paintings, key chains, statues and various other Balinese handicrafts. Ceking terrace has becomes a
favorite destination among foreign travelers, but there are still some issues that need to be resolved to maximize enjoyment of this location. The main problem is the traffic caused by the poorly managed parking services in the region. Sometimes the traffic is so bad that travel agencies divert
their guest to Jatiluwuh, Tabanan, where visitors can enjoy a panorama of terraced paddy field that is quite similar to that of Ceking. Headman of Tegallalang, Dewa Rai Sutrisna, revealed that despite the large contribution that visitors to Ceking provide towards the economy of the local people, traffic remains an issue. Therefor efforts are now being made to arrange the parking situation to the south of Ceking. “This parking area will be
able to accommodate 70 cars but for the time being, it is still under construction so can only accommodate 30 cars,” he explained.
