TORONTO - “Star Trek” fans can now get Starfleet’s most famous figures to help deliver their mail, thanks to a new collection of seven stamps issued on Friday by Canada Post, the country’s mail operator.
The stamps, a followup to a set released last year for the science-fiction franchise’s 50th anniversary, include the captains from each of the five “Star Trek” television series already aired. They are depicted alongside a key nemesis from the series. The sixth stamp is of the Galileo shuttle craft, which first appeared in the original series in 1966. A holographic foil stamp in the shape of a “Borg” cube is the seventh in the collection. SINGARAJA - Business sector in Bali grows quite rapidly. It is not just limited to tourism touted to have the largest investment climate in the world. Lately, the business in the form of provision of Hindu ritual paraphernalia begins to emerge. Ironically and lately, this profession is even pursued by the outsiders. Meanwhile, the Hindus as users seem to keep
silent like spectators. “When observed, undeniably there are a number of materials for Hindu ritual needs brought in from outside, ranging from coconut to incense,” said the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Ganesha University of Education (Undiksha), Dr. Naswan Suharsono, on Wednesday (Apr. 26). According to Suharsono, the needs for Hindu ritual paraphernalia in Bali are very high. It cannot be separated from their life frequently coming into contact with customs
and religion. Analogically, ritual paraphernalia is the yolk whose position serves as the core of the other elements. Then, tourism and industrial sector sit outside and only becomes supporting element. Departing from this phenomenon, business development related to the devotees is very potential to be cultivated. Moreover, it is not impossible that it will support the tourism sector where in Bali it is more cultural-based. “Cultural tourism is supported by religion, so that ritual business is very supportive,” he said. In order to dismiss the invasion of outside entrepreneurs, it is necessary to strengthen human resources that lead to the growth of young entrepreneur who is currently very little. Surely, to realize it requires a hard work, one of which is building synergies with colleges and partnerships with those having first pursued the business sector. “Those having experienced the problems like this (minimal entrepreneur—Ed) are not only Bali, but almost all the regions in Indonesia. Ideally, a region or state, a least 5 percent of its population should become entrepreneur, but we are still less than two percent. Bali can awaken it so that the next generation of Bali will return to condition as ever before,” he said. Amid such situation, this professor from Banyuwangi, East Java, confirmed that Hindu people should start to change their mind, which is able to excel to host. The ritual paraphernalia made independently will be able to bring Bali to get to a more divine vibration. “With such divine vibration, Bali will be more frequented,” he affirmed. To establish businesses, the role of rural credit agency (LPD) is considered very strategic. Introducing insect world to children
Lotus Lantern Festival
SEOUL - It’s been quite a few years since Buddha walked the earth, but his life and example are still celebrated across the world. Although each country honors the icon a bit differently, nowhere can you get a more thrilling crash course in all things Buddha than at Seoul’s annual Lotus Lantern Festival. For three glorious days in May, when the big guy’s turns a year older, Korea pulls out all the stops and throws the best birthday party ever. Taking place across Seoul, the Lotus Lantern Festival is an annual celebration of Buddha’s birth. Preceding the festival, over 100,000 brightly colored lanterns are hung around the streets of Seoul symbolizing offerings of light and compassion. After the lighting of the giant Jangeumdang, the lantern representative of Buddha, the festivities begin! Over 100 experience booths are set up for activities such as teaching visitors to make their own rosaries or lanterns, or dances by host monks in bright robes. The festivi-
ties culminate in the Daedong Celebration, a night of singing and dancing amidst a shower of pink lotus petals. Although the festival begins Friday evening with the traditional lantern exhibition at Bongeunsa Temple, things don’t really get moving until the song and dance-filled Eoulim Hanmadang (Opening Celebration) the following day. However, if you can only squeeze in one event, the Lotus Lantern Parade is by far the must see. The 2.5 hour parade runs from Dongdaemun History and Culture Park down Jongno Street to Joygesa Temple and literally brings the city to a standstill. Imagine more than 100,000 locals in traditional dress (hanbok) carrying illuminated lanterns in the shape of flowers, fruits, animals and other Buddhist symbols down one of Seoul’s busiest streets. It’s truly a magical sight. Tapgol Park near Jongno 3(sam)-ga Station is the best bet for a perfect view of the festivities.
The paper and silk lotus lanterns don’t just make for great photo ops; they are an important reminder of Buddha’s life and mission – symbolizing wishes for health, long life and abundance. Buddhism dictates that, in the lighting of a lotus lantern, one commits to doing good in the world and being a proverbial light in the darkness. It’s a wonderful opportunity for followers to focus and rededicate themselves to the tenets of Buddhism. The ceremony has been a staple of the Korean calendar as far back as the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, and is as much a celebration of Korean heritage as it is of Buddha’s birth. Following the parade is Hoehyang Hanmadang, or simply the post-parade celebration. The Hoehyang Hanmadang is a flurry of events and performances culminating with the traditional ganggangsullae (basically a big, tricky word for a circle dance). Take the opportunity to grab a stranger’s hand while you dance and sing amidst scattered flower
petals. End the night with the great lantern release. Traditionally, wishes and resolutions (seowon) are jotted down on small scraps of paper and burned as thousands of wish lanterns float up into the night sky. The evening ends with the Yeondeungnori (Final Celebration) procession from Insa-dong to the front of Jogyesa Temple. Generally held on the final afternoon of the three-day event, the Buddhist Street Festival and performances near Jogyesa Temple are also worth checking out. Visitors can stroll through more than 100 booths highlighting various aspects of Buddhist culture. This is the place to perfect your Buddhist bow, take part in tea ceremony demonstrations, practice Zen meditation and breathing or paint your very own Buddha portrait. If that hasn’t satisfied your Zen lust make your own lantern, taste temple dishes or strike up a conversation with a friendly monk. A tip: they’re the ones in grey who can’t seem to stop smiling. Dozens of elementary school-age children in scout and sport uniforms seemed to meet the Indonesian Mantis and Phasmid Forum (IMPF) stand guarded by Garda Bagus Damastra and Ilham Maulana Ibrahim. Breeders of various types of mantis and phasmid from Yogyakarta and Bandung are indeed invited specifically to enliven the Agrifest 2017. In the annual event, the student executive board of Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, introduced the world of insects to elementary school and kindergarten students in Denpasar. According to Garda Bagus Damastra, the IMPF does have a moral obligation to educate the public, especially younger generation regarding the insect life, especially from the family of Mantidae and Phylliidae. Not a few of these insects are very beneficial to farmers because they serve as a predator or natural predator of various types of agricultural pests. On the other hand, many children are frightened or phobic when dealing with insects and consider it a hazardous animal that must be destroyed. “Actually, there are so many species of insects that must be preserved because of their vital function in maintaining the balance of ecosystem. One of them serves as a predator or natural predator of various types of agricultural pests. Through this event, the IMPF wanted to educate people especially elementary and kindergarten students. If serious and painstaking, they can also take care of, treat and even breed these insects in a special cage,” he said.
Other than serving as a predator of agricultural crop pests, he said, some types of mantis and phasmid also have a fairly high economic value because of their unique appearance having beautiful and attractive color. Moreover, some of them have now become favorite animal like chirping birds, dogs and cats as well as various other exotic animals. This phenomenon is seen as a very promising economic opportunity so that breeders appear in numbers that specifically breed mantis and phasmid for sale. The emergence of these breeders is certainly very positive because they are able to reduce the action of catching these insects in their natural habitat. “Currently, there are many successful hobbyists that breed various types of mantis and phasmid in terrarium or special cage. Of course, it is very wise if the insect hobbyists wishing to keep these insects purchase from the captive or does not rely on the catch from nature. By that way, the preservation of these insects in their natural habitat can be maintained,” Garda Bagus Damastra suggested. Meanwhile, Ilham Maulana Ibrahim added that raising mantis and phasmid is not too complicated. However, he advised the hobbyists to keep the mantis from the results of breeding. In addition to having higher survival as it is conditioned to be able to adapt to confined spaces, it is essential for conservation or preservation of these insects in their natural habitat. “Moreover, its presence in nature also acts as farmers’ friend because it helps eradicate pests of agriculture naturally,” he reminded. Farmers difficult to meet export quota of Robusta coffee
TABANAN - Based on experience of each odd year, the production of Robusta coffee in Pupuan shows an increase. However, this is doubtful to happen in 2017 due to extreme weather so that the growth of coffee fruit declines and the harvest is estimated to delay from the previous schedule. The estimation on the decline in coffee production in harvest 2017 makes farmers rather difficult to meet the export demand. The export demand for Pupuan Robusta coffee this year amounts to three containers. Plantation Division Head of the Tabanan Agriculture Agency, Dewa Ketut Budidana Susila, said on Wednesday (Apr. 26) that the export demand in 2016 reaching two containers could only be met one container by farmers. In 2017, the demand increases to three containers. “But considering the extreme conditions like this time, it is feared the demand is difficult to be met,” he said. Harvest of Robusta coffee in Tabanan reaches its peak in July to September. Currently, some coffee plants have borne fruits, but not yet ready to be harvested. Meanwhile, the exported coffee depends on whether the demand is in the form of redly and wetly picked or dry conditions. “By and large, the demand is in the form of being picked redly and wetly. To fulfill this, farmers must pick their coffee beans in really ripe condition before being processed. It is not so dry and 10 days after picking,” explained God Budi. Short processing time and storage for redly and
wetly picked coffee bean would require a large enough harvest so that the fulfillment of export quota can be undertaken when the coffee is in peak harvest time. Considering the export potential of Robusta coffee of Pupuan, it is necessary to improve the quality and stability of production. In order to be able to overcome this, the government of Tabanan encouraged farmers of Robusta coffee in Pupuan from 39 subak abian groups to participate in the Society of Geographical Indications Protection (MPIG) certification of the Pupuan Robusta coffee. The assessment itself will take place on May 14 and 15, 2017. According to Dewa Budi, preparation for the MPIG certification has been made since 2015. With the ownership of the certificate, farmers’ commitment and protection of their coffee production will be maintained. “The certification also states therein that there should be no land conversion. As a result, coffee plantation must be maintained so as to keep production in the future,” explained Dewa Budi. After obtaining the MPIG certificate, the agriculture agency will provide staff training on quality maintenance so that the quality of the exported Robusta coffee can be assessed and maintained for safe and accountable quality when exported in the future. Based on the data in 2016, Pupuan has 39 subak abian groups with the area of Robusta coffee plantation reaching 9,586.31 hectares, where 822.45 hectares of them belong to the plants that have not produced yet; 8,197.91 hectares of productive plants and 1,134.27 hectares of plants that have not produced yet or damaged plants. Meanwhile, the number of Robusta coffee production in 2016 reached 6,101.61 tons. (kmb24)

However, when feeding it, suddenly the male elephant of Lampung race wrapped around his body using its trunk and slammed him to fall unconscious. After that, the victim (Nyoman Levi) was rushed to emergency room of Klungkung Hospital. But when arrived at hospital around 10:50, the victim was declared to have died. Based on the information of the emergency room officer, the victim suffered an abrasion on top left side of the head with the length of about five centimeters, three centimeters wide and two centimeters deep. In addition, the victim also suffered blisters on the face and abrasion in the left thigh and in the right chest with a length of three centimeters, one centimeter wide and three centimeters deep. There are allegations if the wounds on the chest caused the victim to die.
From the observation at Klungkung Hospital, many families of Nyoman Levi had gathered in the emergency room. His son and daughter-in-law looked back and forth into the emergency room. Family members looked shocked when arriving in the emergency room. However, they prohibited journalists and officers of Klungkung Police from seeking information and photos for privacy reasons. The family also refused to do an autopsy. Moreover, the management of Bakas Levi Rafting also denied the incidents afflicting to its boss. To a number of journalists, the management of Bakas Levi Rafting, Nyoman Merta, at the hospital said that his boss has a history of heart disease. He also suspected Nyoman Levi died of fatigue. Previously, he attended many activities ranging from Galungan feast day to melasti ceremony by walking from Klungkung four-way intersection to Pundukdawa Temple at Dawan. “We do not know whether they have any correlation. However, his body looks lethargic after that,” said Nyoman Merta.
However, Nyoman Merta admitted that his boss died while feeding the elephant in Bakas Levi Rafting. Almost every day Nyoman Levi is said to feed the small animal in Bakas Levi Rafting, including the elephants he raised. The food given is in the form of fruits taken from home. Right now, he raises a total of eight elephants in Bakas Levi Rafting. “For the past 20 years I worked with him, he very much loves animal and can quickly adapt. Instead I salute with him because he is the only local entrepreneur of Bali paying attention to animals,” he said. What about the process of burial or pelebon? Nyoman Merta could not ascertain because there is still a ceremony at Dalem Temple of Bakas village. So, his party with the family will further coordinate with the local customary village. “For a while, his body is commended at Sanglah Hospital while waiting for coordination with customary village,” he said. To restore the fish population in Lake Batur, the government of Bangli did restocking of hundreds of thousands of fingerlings on Friday (Apr. 28). The restocking activities were held at Kedisan village, Kintamani, led by Assistant III of General Administration Affairs, Wayan Warta Megantara, in a series of the 813th anniversary of Bangli town followed by some heads of agency in the Bangli government and the community.
Wayan Megantara who was representing the Regent of Bangli, Made Gianyar, said the restocking activity is the best measure to restore and increase fish population in public waters of Lake Batur. This restocking activity also helps the community to fulfill their fish protein and improve people’s economy around Batur Lake. China Sea dispute, cites ‘improving cooperation’ MANILA - Southeast Asian leaders took a softer stance on disputes in the South China Sea during a summit that ended on Saturday, avoiding tacit references to China’s building and arming of its manmade islands, according to the chairman’s statement. A final statement of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), which was not made available until Sunday, dropped the references to “land reclamation and militarization” included in the text issued at last year’s meeting in Laos and an earlier, unpublished version seen by Reuters on Saturday. The outcome follows what two ASEAN diplomats said were efforts by Chinese foreign ministry and embassy officials in Manila to pressure ASEAN chair the Philippines to keep Beijing’s contentious activities in the strategic waterway off ASEAN’s official agenda. It also indicates four ASEAN members who the diplomats said had wanted a firmer position had agreed to the more conciliatory tone in the statement. China is not a member of ASEAN and was not attending the summit but is extremely sensitive about the content of its statements and considers it a barometer of
the bloc’s dissent over its artificial islands in disputed waters. China’s embassy in Manila could not be reached and its foreign ministry did not respond to request for comment on Saturday. SEOUL - South Korea said the United States had reaffirmed it would shoulder the cost of deploying the THAAD anti-missile system, days after President Donald Trump said Seoul should pay for the $1-billion battery designed to defend against North Korea. McMaster, reassured his South Korean counterpart, Kim Kwan-jin, that the U.S. alliance with South Korea was its top priority in the AsiaPacific region, the South’s presidential office said. The conversation followed another North Korean missile test-launch on Saturday which Washington and Seoul said was unsuccessful, but which drew widespread international condemnation. Trump, asked about his message to North Korea after the latest missile test, told reporters: “You’ll soon find out”, but did not elaborate on what the U.S. response would be. Trump’s comments in an interview with Reuters on Thursday that he wanted Seoul to pay for the THAAD deployment perplexed South Koreans and raised questions about his commitment to the two countries’ alliance. South Korean officials responded that the cost was for Washington to bear, under the bilateral agreement. “National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster explained that the recent statements by President Trump were

About 300 residents rallied on Sunday as two U.S. Army lorries tried to enter the THAAD deployment site. Go back to your country!” Police said they had sent about 800 officers to the site and two residents were injured during clashes with them. South Korea and the United States say the sole purpose of THAAD is to guard against North Korean missiles. HAVANA - Cuba plans to reduce spending further in 2018 following two years of budget cuts, the ruling Communist Party newspaper Granma wrote on Friday, as a deepening crisis in socialist ally Venezuela puts the squeeze on its finances. The Caribbean island began to slash imports and reduce the use of fuel and electricity last year, sending its centrally planned economy into recession for the first time in nearly a quarter century. “The basic premise (of the 2018 plan) is to meet production and service goals through efficiency and a lowering of costs to levels less than in 2017,” Granma wrote on Friday, citing a presentation of Economy Minister Ricardo Cabrisas to the Council of Ministers. Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan or commonly known as Buda Kliwon Pahang falling on Wednesday (May 10) is the end of the series of Galungan feast day. It is marked by withdrawing the penjor and burning it. Likewise, all the attributes of the penjor such as bakang, lamak, sampian and so on are burned. The ashes are put into a young ivory coconut and then buried in the house yard. Ashes of the penjor symbolize prosperity, so that on that day the Hindus plead to God to be blessed with fertility. However, before withdrawing the penjor, people must first put offerings or canang on the bamboo platform shrine that the series of Galungan feast day has already completed. It is resumed with masegeh procession, including at the location of penjor. Chairman of Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) Bali, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Sudiana said that the series of Galungan feast day ends on Buda Kliwon Pahang. Thus, the preaching of dharma has lasted for 42 days. During the series of Galungan is also known as the Uncal Balung. During that time, people generally abstain from organizing Panca Yadnya (five sacrifices) ritual activities, including wedding, except for pujawali or festival at temple or family or clan temple happening to fall during this period. Prof. Sudiana said that after the end of the Galungan series, people are reminded to always be able to apply the values ??of dharma (truth) and maintain victory against adharma. HARRISBURG - U.S. President Donald Trump hit the road on Saturday to celebrate his first 100 days in the White House with cheering supporters at a campaign-style rally, touting his initial achievements and lashing out at critics.
Trump told a Pennsylvania crowd he was just getting started on meeting his campaign promises. He repeatedly attacked an “incompetent, dishonest” media, saying they were not telling the truth about his administration’s accomplishments. “My administration has been delivering every single day for the great citizens of our country,” Trump said in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. “We are keeping one promise after another, and frankly the people are really happy about it.” The rally occurred on the same day as a climate march at which thousands of protesters surrounded the White House, and it also coincided with the annual black-tie White House press dinner in Washington. Trump said he was thrilled to be away from the “Washington swamp”. “A large group of Hollywood actors and Washington media are consoling each other in a hotel ballroom in our nation’s capital right now,” Trump said to loud boos from the crowd. “If the media’s job is to be honest and to tell the truth, the media deserves a very, very big fat failing grade.” Trump listed what he said were some of his key early accomplishments, including the successful confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court of Justice Neil Gorsuch and clearing away many regulations on the environment and business. Female clerics declare fatwa on child marriage in Indonesia
KUALA LUMPUR - Female clerics on Thursday issued an unprecedented fatwa against child marriage in Indonesia in a bid to stop young girls becoming brides in the world’s most populous Muslim country. The fatwa - which is influential among Muslims but not legally binding - came at the end of an extraordinary three-day conference of female Islamic clerics: a rare example of women assuming a lead role in religious affairs in this mostly-Muslim country. “Maternal mortality is very high in Indonesia. We - as female clerics - can play a role on the issue of child marriage,” conference organiser Ninik Rahayu told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “Female clerics know the issues and obstacles women face, we can take action and not just wait for the government to protect these children,” she said by phone from Cirebon in the West Java province, where the congress was held. Indonesia has one of the worst records for under-age marriage - its high number of child brides puts it among the top 10 countries worldwide - and it is common for girls to marry before they turn 18. Indonesia calls for stability, peace in Korean Peninsula
JAKARTA - Following a recent spike in tensions in the Korean Peninsula, Indonesia has called for stability and peace in the region.

President Joko Widodo expressed concern over the rising tensions in the Korean peninsula during a retreat session at the 30th ASEAN Summit held at the Formal Living Room, Coconut Palace, Manila, the Philippines, on Saturday. “The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) should send across a strong message to North Korea to comply with all UN Security Council resolutions,” Widodo emphasized. The ASEAN also expects all parties to exercise restraint, so that the situation in the Korean peninsula will not spiral out of control. “Stability and peace in the Korean Peninsula must be restored,” he noted. Furthermore, Widodo said he will discuss the
situation in the Korean Peninsula with President of the Peoples Republic of China Xi Jinping in the near future. ASEAN leaders also discussed other international issues, including counterterrorism and the South China Sea. Related to the issue of the South China Sea, ASEAN leaders expected the Code of Conduct (CoC) framework to be completed by mid-2017. The ASEAN member countries and China had discussed the CoC framework in Bali in December 2016, as outlined in the Bali draft. The draft was further streamlined during a meeting in Siem Reap in Cambodia at the end of March in 2017. Indonesia expressed hope that global superpowers would not use the South China Sea region to project their clout. “Indonesia invites the Peoples Republic of China to continue contributing to stability and peace in the South China Sea region,” Widodo stated. ARIZONA - American cyclist Chad Young died on Friday evening in hospital in Tucson, Arizona, five days after crashing during the Tour of the Gila, the Axeon Hagens Berman Cycling Team announced on Saturday. Young, 21, suffered severe head injuries in the crash, which occurred at high speed during a mountain descent in New Mexico. “We lost a friend, a team mate and a family member. I have no words that can express my pain over this loss,” said team manager Axel Merckx, general manager. “I can only say that I am very thankful to have known him and that I feel privileged to have been able to share in his passion for cycling.” The fatal crash also involved several other cyclists, who escaped serious injury. “The crash itself was really no different or remarkable to any other,” Mobius Future Racing general manager Tom Petty told cyclingnews.com. “A small bunch of riders came into the corner. It was a bit deceiving; they realised they’d misjudged it and in the correction, lost control and crashed,” he said. ARIZONA - American cyclist Chad Young died on Friday evening in hospital in Tucson, Arizona, five days after crashing during the Tour of the Gila, the Axeon Hagens Berman Cycling Team announced on Saturday. Young, 21, suffered severe head injuries in the crash, which occurred at high speed during a mountain descent in New Mexico. “We lost a friend, a team mate and a family member. I have no words that can express my pain over this loss,” said team manager Axel Merckx, general manager. “I can only say that I am very thankful to have known him and that I feel privileged to have been able to share in his passion for cycling.” The fatal crash also involved several other cyclists, who escaped serious injury. “The crash itself was really no different or remarkable to any other,” Mobius Future Racing general manager Tom Petty told cyclingnews.com. “A small bunch of riders came into the corner. HARRISBURG - U.S. President Donald Trump hit the road on Saturday to celebrate his first 100 days in the White House with cheering supporters at a campaign-style rally, touting his initial achievements and lashing out at critics.
Trump told a Pennsylvania crowd he was just getting started on meeting his campaign promises. He repeatedly attacked an “incompetent, dishonest” media, saying they were not telling the truth about his administration’s accomplishments. “My administration has been delivering every single day for the great citizens of our country,” Trump said in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. “We are keeping one promise after another, and frankly the people are really happy about it.” The rally occurred on the same day as a climate march at which thousands of protesters surrounded the White House, and it also coincided with the annual black-tie White House press dinner in Washington. Female clerics declare fatwa on child marriage in Indonesia
KUALA LUMPUR - Female clerics on Thursday issued an unprecedented fatwa against child marriage in Indonesia in a bid to stop young girls becoming brides in the world’s most populous Muslim country. The fatwa - which is influential among Muslims but not legally binding - came at the end of an extraordinary three-day conference of female Islamic clerics: a rare example of women assuming a lead role in religious affairs in this mostly-Muslim country. “Maternal mortality is very high in Indonesia. We - as female clerics - can play a role on the issue of child marriage,” conference organiser Ninik Rahayu told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “Female clerics know the issues and obstacles women face, we can take action and not just wait for the government to protect these children,” she said by phone from Cirebon in the West Java province, where the congress was held. Indonesia has one of the worst records for under-age marriage - its high number of child brides puts it among the top 10 countries worldwide - and it is common for girls to marry before they turn 18. In issuing the fatwa, the women clerics cited studies saying many Indonesian child brides could not continue their studies once wed and half their marriages ended in divorce. They urged the government to raise the minimum marriage age for girls to 18, a demand activists have sought for years. Early marriage not only makes it more likely that girls will quit school, campaigners say it also increases the risks of exploitation, sexual violence, domestic abuse and death in childbirth. About 300 participants took part in the congress, which included Indonesian women clerics and women leaders from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Malaysia. Organisers billed the three-day conference as the first meeting of its kind in the world. President Joko Widodo expressed concern over the rising tensions in the Korean peninsula during a retreat session at the 30th ASEAN Summit held at the Formal Living Room, Coconut Palace, Manila, the Philippines, on Saturday. “The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) should send across a strong message to North Korea to comply with all UN Security Council resolutions,” Widodo emphasized. The ASEAN also expects all parties to exercise restraint, so that the situation in the Korean peninsula will not spiral out of control. “Stability and peace in the Korean Peninsula must be restored,” he noted. Furthermore, Widodo said he will discuss the
situation in the Korean Peninsula with President of the Peoples Republic of China Xi Jinping in the near future. ASEAN leaders also discussed other international issues, including counterterrorism and the South China Sea. Related to the issue of the South China Sea, ASEAN leaders expected the Code of Conduct (CoC) framework to be completed by mid-2017. The ASEAN member countries and China had discussed the CoC framework in Bali in December 2016, as outlined in the Bali draft. The draft was further streamlined during a meeting in Siem Reap in Cambodia at the end of March in 2017. Likewise, all the attributes of the penjor such as bakang, lamak, sampian and so on are burned. The ashes are put into a young ivory coconut and then buried in the house yard. Ashes of the penjor symbolize prosperity, so that on that day the Hindus plead to God to be blessed with fertility. However, before withdrawing the penjor, people must first put offerings or canang on the bamboo platform shrine that the series of Galungan feast day has already completed. It is resumed with masegeh procession, including at the location of penjor. During that time, people generally abstain from organizing Panca Yadnya (five sacrifices) ritual activities, including wedding, except for pujawali or festival at temple or family or clan temple happening to fall during this period. He also explained that the group only had a limited amount of time to rehearse because of the short notice that they were given by the Municipal Government and also because of the difficulty in scheduling rehearsals with members of the group who live far away. “This is the risk one takes when working with people with experience, on the other hand there is no need to worry about the quality of the work. There are allegations if the wounds on the chest caused the victim to die.

BANGLI - Fish population in the waters of Lake Batur, Kintamani, had reduced due to the burst of sulfur. The sulfur originating from the bottom of the lake had an impact on the death of thousands of fish living wild in the Lake Batur en masse. To restore the fish population in Lake Batur, the government of Bangli did restocking of hundreds of thousands of fingerlings on Friday (Apr. 28). The restocking activities were held at Kedisan village, Kintamani, led by Assistant III of General Administration Affairs, Wayan Warta Megantara, in a series of the 813th anniversary of Bangli town followed by some heads of agency in the Bangli government and the community.
Wayan Megantara who was representing the Regent of Bangli, Made Gianyar, said the restocking activity is the best measure to restore and increase fish population in public waters of Lake Batur. This restocking activity also helps the community to fulfill their fish protein and improve people’s economy around Batur Lake. To that end, the government hoped the community and fish farmers in the area of Lake Batur to continuously assist the government programs in the eco-friendly fishery development and maintain the preservation of Lake Batur. Meanwhile, the Head of the Bangli Agriculture, Food Security and Fishery Agency (PKP), I Wayan Sukartana, said that restock-
ing activity is a regular activity conducted by the government of Bangli every year. On Friday, it restocked 100,000 fingerlings in Lake Batur. Aside from at Kedisan village, the restocking activities will also be done gradually this year. As planned, another restocking will be held on August 19 at Buahan village amounting to 50,000 fingerlings, 50,000 fingerlings at Abang Batu Dinding village and 100,000 fingerlings at Hulundanu Songan village on September 23. “To carry out the continuous restocking activities from year to year, there should also be support from related parties both from private parties, fishery business players and general public,” said Sukartana. ASEAN gives Beijing a pass on S. China Sea dispute, cites ‘improving cooperation’ MANILA - Southeast Asian leaders took a softer stance on disputes in the South China Sea during a summit that ended on Saturday, avoiding tacit references to China’s building and arming of its manmade islands, according to the chairman’s statement. A final statement of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), which was not made available until Sunday, dropped the references to “land reclamation and militarization” included in the text issued at last year’s meeting in Laos and an earlier, unpublished version seen by Reuters on Saturday. The outcome follows what two ASEAN diplomats said were efforts by Chinese foreign ministry and embassy officials in Manila to pressure ASEAN chair the Philippines to keep Beijing’s contentious activities in the strategic waterway off ASEAN’s official agenda. It also indicates four ASEAN members who the diplomats said had wanted a firmer position had agreed to the more conciliatory tone in the statement. China is not a member of ASEAN and was not attending the summit but is extremely sensitive about the content of its statements and considers it a barometer of
the bloc’s dissent over its artificial islands in disputed waters. China’s embassy in Manila could not be reached and its foreign ministry did not respond to request for comment on Saturday. The ASEAN statement also noted “the improving cooperation between ASEAN and China”, and did not include references to “tensions” or “escalation of activities” seen in earlier drafts and in last year’s text. It noted some leaders’ concerns about “recent developments”. Beijing has reacted angrily to members expressing their concern about its rapid reclamation of reefs in the Spratly archipelago and its installation of missile systems on them. Duterte set the tone for the meeting on Thursday when he told reporters it would be pointless discussing China’s maritime activities, because no one dared to pressure Beijing anyway. SEOUL - South Korea said the United States had reaffirmed it would shoulder the cost of deploying the THAAD anti-missile system, days after President Donald Trump said Seoul should pay for the $1-billion battery designed to defend against North Korea. In a telephone call on Sunday, Trump’s national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, reassured his South Korean counterpart, Kim Kwan-jin, that the U.S. alliance with South Korea was its top priority in the AsiaPacific region, the South’s presidential office said. The conversation followed another North Korean missile test-launch on Saturday which Washington and Seoul said was unsuccessful, but which drew widespread international condemnation. Trump, asked about his message to North Korea after the latest missile test, told reporters: “You’ll soon find out”, but did not elaborate on what the U.S. response would be. Trump’s comments in an interview with Reuters on Thursday that he wanted Seoul to pay for the THAAD deployment perplexed South Koreans and raised questions about his commitment to the two countries’ alliance. South Korean officials responded that the cost was for Washington to bear, under the bilateral agreement. “National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster explained that the recent statements by President Trump were
made in a general context, in line with the U.S. public expectations on defence cost burden-sharing with allies,” South Korea’s Blue House said in a statement, adding that McMaster requested the call. Major elements of the advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system were moved into the planned site in Seonjgu, in the south of the country, this week. The deployment has drawn protests from China, which says the powerful radar which can penetrate its territory will undermine regional security, and from local residents worried they will be a target for North Korean missiles. About 300 residents rallied on Sunday as two U.S. Army lorries tried to enter the THAAD deployment site. Video provided by villagers showed protesters blocking the road with a car and chanting slogans such as “Don’t lie to us! Go back to your country!” Police said they had sent about 800 officers to the site and two residents were injured during clashes with them. South Korea and the United States say the sole purpose of THAAD is to guard against North Korean missiles. The United States is seeking more help from China, the North’s major ally, to rein in Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile development. Lotus Lantern Festival
SEOUL - It’s been quite a few years since Buddha walked the earth, but his life and example are still celebrated across the world. Although each country honors the icon a bit differently, nowhere can you get a more thrilling crash course in all things Buddha than at Seoul’s annual Lotus Lantern Festival. For three glorious days in May, when the big guy’s turns a year older, Korea pulls out all the stops and throws the best birthday party ever. Taking place across Seoul, the Lotus Lantern Festival is an annual celebration of Buddha’s birth. Preceding the festival, over 100,000 brightly colored lanterns are hung around the streets of Seoul symbolizing offerings of light and compassion. After the lighting of the giant Jangeumdang, the lantern representative of Buddha, the festivities begin! Over 100 experience booths are set up for activities such as teaching visitors to make their own rosaries or lanterns, or dances by host monks in bright robes. The festivi-
ties culminate in the Daedong Celebration, a night of singing and dancing amidst a shower of pink lotus petals. Although the festival begins Friday evening with the traditional lantern exhibition at Bongeunsa Temple, things don’t really get moving until the song and dance-filled Eoulim Hanmadang (Opening Celebration) the following day. However, if you can only squeeze in one event, the Lotus Lantern Parade is by far the must see. The 2.5 hour parade runs from Dongdaemun History and Culture Park down Jongno Street to Joygesa Temple and literally brings the city to a standstill. Imagine more than 100,000 locals in traditional dress (hanbok) carrying illuminated lanterns in the shape of flowers, fruits, animals and other Buddhist symbols down one of Seoul’s busiest streets. It’s truly a magical sight. Tapgol Park near Jongno 3(sam)-ga Station is the best bet for a perfect view of the festivities.
The paper and silk lotus lanterns don’t just make for great photo ops; they are an important reminder of Buddha’s life and mission – symbolizing wishes for health, long life and abundance. Buddhism dictates that, in the lighting of a lotus lantern, one commits to doing good in the world and being a proverbial light in the darkness. It’s a wonderful opportunity for followers to focus and rededicate themselves to the tenets of Buddhism. The ceremony has been a staple of the Korean calendar as far back as the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, and is as much a celebration of Korean heritage as it is of Buddha’s birth. Following the parade is Hoehyang Hanmadang, or simply the post-parade celebration. The Hoehyang Hanmadang is a flurry of events and performances culminating with the traditional ganggangsullae (basically a big, tricky word for a circle dance). Take the opportunity to grab a stranger’s hand while you dance and sing amidst scattered flower
petals. End the night with the great lantern release. Traditionally, wishes and resolutions (seowon) are jotted down on small scraps of paper and burned as thousands of wish lanterns float up into the night sky. The evening ends with the Yeondeungnori (Final Celebration) procession from Insa-dong to the front of Jogyesa Temple. Generally held on the final afternoon of the three-day event, the Buddhist Street Festival and performances near Jogyesa Temple are also worth checking out. Visitors can stroll through more than 100 booths highlighting various aspects of Buddhist culture. This is the place to perfect your Buddhist bow, take part in tea ceremony demonstrations, practice Zen meditation and breathing or paint your very own Buddha portrait. If that hasn’t satisfied your Zen lust make your own lantern, taste temple dishes or strike up a conversation with a friendly monk. A tip: they’re the ones in grey who can’t seem to stop smiling. Dozens of elementary school-age children in scout and sport uniforms seemed to meet the Indonesian Mantis and Phasmid Forum (IMPF) stand guarded by Garda Bagus Damastra and Ilham Maulana Ibrahim. Breeders of various types of mantis and phasmid from Yogyakarta and Bandung are indeed invited specifically to enliven the Agrifest 2017. In the annual event, the student executive board of Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, introduced the world of insects to elementary school and kindergarten students in Denpasar. According to Garda Bagus Damastra, the IMPF does have a moral obligation to educate the public, especially younger generation regarding the insect life, especially from the family of Mantidae and Phylliidae. Not a few of these insects are very beneficial to farmers because they serve as a predator or natural predator of various types of agricultural pests. On the other hand, many children are frightened or phobic when dealing with insects and consider it a hazardous animal that must be destroyed. “Actually, there are so many species of insects that must be preserved because of their vital function in maintaining the balance of ecosystem. One of them serves as a predator or natural predator of various types of agricultural pests. Through this event, the IMPF wanted to educate people especially elementary and kindergarten students. If serious and painstaking, they can also take care of, treat and even breed these insects in a special cage,” he said.
Other than serving as a predator of agricultural crop pests, he said, some types of mantis and phasmid also have a fairly high economic value because of their unique appearance having beautiful and attractive color. Moreover, some of them have now become favorite animal like chirping birds, dogs and cats as well as various other exotic animals. This phenomenon is seen as a very promising economic opportunity so that breeders appear in numbers that specifically breed mantis and phasmid for sale. The emergence of these breeders is certainly very positive because they are able to reduce the action of catching these insects in their natural habitat. “Currently, there are many successful hobbyists that breed various types of mantis and phasmid in terrarium or special cage. Of course, it is very wise if the insect hobbyists wishing to keep these insects purchase from the captive or does not rely on the catch from nature. By that way, the preservation of these insects in their natural habitat can be maintained,” Garda Bagus Damastra suggested. Meanwhile, Ilham Maulana Ibrahim added that raising mantis and phasmid is not too complicated. However, he advised the hobbyists to keep the mantis from the results of breeding. In addition to having higher survival as it is conditioned to be able to adapt to confined spaces, it is essential for conservation or preservation of these insects in their natural habitat. “Moreover, its presence in nature also acts as farmers’ friend because it helps eradicate pests of agriculture naturally,” he reminded. Farmers difficult to meet export quota of Robusta coffee
TABANAN - Based on experience of each odd year, the production of Robusta coffee in Pupuan shows an increase. However, this is doubtful to happen in 2017 due to extreme weather so that the growth of coffee fruit declines and the harvest is estimated to delay from the previous schedule. The estimation on the decline in coffee production in harvest 2017 makes farmers rather difficult to meet the export demand. The export demand for Pupuan Robusta coffee this year amounts to three containers. Plantation Division Head of the Tabanan Agriculture Agency, Dewa Ketut Budidana Susila, said on Wednesday (Apr. 26) that the export demand in 2016 reaching two containers could only be met one container by farmers. In 2017, the demand increases to three containers. “But considering the extreme conditions like this time, it is feared the demand is difficult to be met,” he said. Harvest of Robusta coffee in Tabanan reaches its peak in July to September. Currently, some coffee plants have borne fruits, but not yet ready to be harvested. Meanwhile, the exported coffee depends on whether the demand is in the form of redly and wetly picked or dry conditions. “By and large, the demand is in the form of being picked redly and wetly. To fulfill this, farmers must pick their coffee beans in really ripe condition before being processed. It is not so dry and 10 days after picking,” explained God Budi. Short processing time and storage for redly and
wetly picked coffee bean would require a large enough harvest so that the fulfillment of export quota can be undertaken when the coffee is in peak harvest time. Considering the export potential of Robusta coffee of Pupuan, it is necessary to improve the quality and stability of production. In order to be able to overcome this, the government of Tabanan encouraged farmers of Robusta coffee in Pupuan from 39 subak abian groups to participate in the Society of Geographical Indications Protection (MPIG) certification of the Pupuan Robusta coffee. The assessment itself will take place on May 14 and 15, 2017. According to Dewa Budi, preparation for the MPIG certification has been made since 2015. With the ownership of the certificate, farmers’ commitment and protection of their coffee production will be maintained. “The certification also states therein that there should be no land conversion. As a result, coffee plantation must be maintained so as to keep production in the future,” explained Dewa Budi. After obtaining the MPIG certificate, the agriculture agency will provide staff training on quality maintenance so that the quality of the exported Robusta coffee can be assessed and maintained for safe and accountable quality when exported in the future. Based on the data in 2016, Pupuan has 39 subak abian groups with the area of Robusta coffee plantation reaching 9,586.31 hectares, where 822.45 hectares of them belong to the plants that have not produced yet; 8,197.91 hectares of productive plants and 1,134.27 hectares of plants that have not produced yet or damaged plants. Ideally, a region or state, a least 5 percent of its population should become entrepreneur, but we are still less than two percent. Bali can awaken it so that the next generation of Bali will return to condition as ever before,” he said. Amid such situation, this professor from Banyuwangi, East Java, confirmed that Hindu people should start to change their mind, which is able to excel to host. The ritual paraphernalia made independently will be able to bring Bali to get to a more divine vibration. “With such divine vibration, Bali will be more frequented,” he affirmed. To establish businesses, the role of rural credit agency (LPD) is considered very strategic. uncertain with an average of IDR 500,000 per month. So, she then decided to work as a tour guide in the mangrove park with initial

TORONTO - “Star Trek” fans can now get Starfleet’s most famous figures to help deliver their mail, thanks to a new collection of seven stamps issued on Friday by Canada Post, the country’s mail operator.
The stamps, a followup to a set released last year for the science-fiction franchise’s 50th anniversary, include the captains from each of the five “Star Trek” television series already aired. They are depicted alongside a key nemesis from the series. The sixth stamp is of the Galileo shuttle craft, which first appeared in the original series in 1966. A holographic foil stamp in the shape of a “Borg” cube is the seventh in the collection. Last year, Zhejiang Huati Culture Communication, an entertainment startup backed by Tencent Holdings, was looking to create a girl band when the idea of an androgynous act came about. “It was rather a coincidence. We hap-
pened to see many ‘handsome girls’ during the auditions, and people thought they looked quite all right. Then it hit me that now is the time,” Zhejiang Huati’s chief executive Wang Tianhai told Reuters. Acrush is one of several bands under the FFC brand, which aims to be a pioneer in sports entertainment by mixing sports with music and dance. All FFC bands - including Acrush must learn how to play soccer. Soccer is backed President Xi Jinping, and the sport is expected to boom into a 5 trillion yuan ($725 billion) business by 2025. “It is a new adventure for us and also for the Chinese pop music market,” said Min Junqian, a member of Acrush.
