BANGKOK - Severe flooding and mudslides in southern Thailand have killed 21 people, stranded thousands of tourists and threatened to delay shipments of rubber in the world’s largest rubber-producing country, authorities said on Wednesday. Trains to the region have been cancelled and three airports have been shut, including one on the popular island of Koh Samui. As well as Koh Samui, foreign tourists have also been stuck at resorts in Krabi and Koh Phangan. The Thai navy evacuated about 1,200 people from Koh Samui and Koh Tao, a remote island popular with backpackers.

Thailand’s navy sent four vessels including an amphibious landing craft with on-board helicopters to deliver supplies and rescue tourists and vil-

lagers in areas severely hit. “More rain is expected in the next few days,” Satit Wongnongtoey, a minister in the prime minister’s office, told Reuters.

British ambassador Asif Ahmad said Britain was in close contact with the Thai navy on the evacuation of tourists from the region. The flooding could delay shipments of between 1,000 and 1,500 tonnes of smoked rubber sheet, industry officials said. The region supplies 90 percent of the 3.2 million tonnes produced annually in Thailand, the world’s biggest producer and exporter.

Blanjong Temple posing one of the cultural heritages in Denpasar was pilfered by a falling tree on Wednesday (Jan 19). At that time, strong winds accompanied by rain flushing Denpasar caused a banyan tree next to the temple to collapse. As a result of the incident, four existing shrines consisting of Bhatara Istri shrine, Padmasana, priest pavilion and oblation pavilion were damaged. After two months of incident, until now there are signs of improvement against those shrines located in Sanur. It is feared that devotees who would like to say prayers to the temple will get disturbed as a number of shrines remain damaged. Made Sutama, Chief of Renon Customary Village, becoming the supporting devotees of the temple admitted on Wednesday (Mar 30) that repair to a number of damaged shrines had not been undertaken yet. The delay was due to the lack of clarity given by the Cultural Reserve Maintenance Agency. “We’ve had time to send a letter about this incident, but no official response from the Cultural Reserve Maintenance Agency based at Pejeng, Gianyar,” said Sutama. His party did not dare to do the repairs before any formal response obtained from the authorities for the improvements. If only the Cultural Reserve Maintenance Agency had responded officially, his party would at-

tempt to repair them. “We expect what we have reported could be responded immediately, so the efforts to repair the temple could be put into our agenda,” said former Division Head of Waters Services, Denpasar Public Works. Likewise, it was explained that the Blanjong Temple was one of the assets of the Archaeological Institute of Bali, NTT and NTB Region. This temple retained the Blanjong Site consisting of some important ancient shrines, statues, stone and others. The temple was supported by four customary villages, namely the Renon Customary Village, Ceramcam Customary Hamlet, Kesiman (9 families), Taman Hamlet, Sanur (2 families), and Lantang Hidung Hamlet, Sukawati (36 families). “Indeed, most supporting devotees are from Renon. JAKARTA - Indonesian militants are using parcel bombs and targeting minorities to try to push an Islamist agenda on the government and they could launch further small attacks, the country’s antiterror agency chief told Reuters. Militant attacks and incidents of religious intolerance have risen in recent weeks, with mobs lynching three followers of a minority Islamic sect and torching two churches on Java island. Parcel bombs have been sent to people involved in promoting pluralism and counter-terrorism in Jakarta. The head of the National CounterTerrorism Agency, Ansyaad Mbai, said Islamic organisations that had not previously been involved in acts of terror were joining a militant network in Indonesia because of a convergence on certain issues. “Terrorism is politics. The motive is politics, and clearly the militant network’s aim is to affect political policy,” Mbai said in an interview at his barricaded office in a former colonial

building in central Jakarta. Mbai said radical groups were putting pressure on the government to grant demands to dissolve the Ahmadi, a minority Islamic sect branded deviant by religious leaders in the world’s most populous Muslim nation. Members of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), known for smashing up bars but not considered a terrorist group, have threatened to launch a revolution if the Ahmadi sect is not banned. Mbai said the Islamist movement in the officially secular country would gain more ground if the government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who has no clear stance on the matter, bowed to this demand. “The president said that we can’t be defeated by terrorism, but I say, if Ahmadi is dissolved, this country has been defeated,” said Mbai, a former two-star police general. Due to heavy rain flushing Kintamani, the slopes of Mount Abang Kintamani avalanched. The worst incident happened on Tuesday (Mar 29) afternoon after heavy rains flushed the region consecutively for three days. The avalanche of Mount Abang’s slopes brought materials in the form of sand and stone along 835 meters with a depth of 3.5 meters. Though it did not cause casualties, the in-

cident filled the water embankment and threatened the safety of many residents living in the area. After the report on the landslides occurred on the slopes of Mount Abang, Wednesday (Mar 30), the National Unity and Community Protection (Kesbanglinmas), Bangli Public Works, Deputy Head of Bangli House I Nyoman Basma and Made Sugiman of Commission III of Bangli House immediately made a visit to location.

According to I Nyoman Basma, at a glance from the bottom the avalanche on the slopes of Mount Abang looked small. However, it brought materials along 835 meters with a height of 3.5 meters. The incident was a little weird but real. There was possibility of another avalanche at the other points, but the flow of materials led to one location, precisely toward Dukuh Hamlet, Abang Batu Dinding Village, Kintamani.

Fish exports to Japan predicted to stagnate Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Fish exports from Bali to Japan are estimated to have stagnated following the earthquake and tsunami hitting the country. Head of Bali Fisheries and Maritime Services, I Gusti Putu Nuriartha, had confidence that such condition only lasted temporary and was not too significant. “The volume of fish export to Japan is quite high. Even, it is dominant if compared to the export destination countries in general, reaching 80 percent,” said Nuriartha in Denpasar, Wednesday (Mar 30). According to him, existence of the natural disaster causing nuclear radiation was also estimated to affect the demand for imports. However, he had confidence it would not last too long as Japan posing one of the developed countries had experience of the earthquake, tsunami and was economically a strong country. Such conditions would make a quick return on the Japan’s economic recovery. “I am optimistic that Japan can resolve the problem. The effect of fish export from Bali to Japan as the biggest consumer will only last temporarily,” he said. Nuriartha asked the fish exporters in Bali not to be panic in addressing the tsunami disaster af-

flicting Japan because it was only temporary. Japan was a strong country and fish posed one of the most important consumption commodities for people of the country. Other than Japan, the countries in the European Union, the United States and Middle-East were potential markets for the Indonesian fisheries. However, the exporters faced an entry tariff barriers and food safety issues to the European Union. After 2004, many of the exported products from Indonesia, especially Bali, were rejected by EU countries as alleged to contain heavy metals. Total fishery export of Bali in February 2011 reached 1,894,185.62 kg with a nominal value of USD 7,636,037.09. Species of fish exported by Bali in this period included fresh tuna, fresh lion tuna, fresh grouper and fresh snapper to frozen squid with varying volume. Meanwhile, the increase of productivity in the field of maritime and fishery affairs had been reached from 243,965.2 tons in 2009 to 245,399.71 tons in 2010 and the increase of export value from USD 127,012,338.86 to USD 136,288,388. Fake coffee sweepstakes spread to Mendoyo Negara (Bali Post)—

Distribution of milk-coffee sweepstake coupon with the prize of car is getting widespread in Jembrana. Previously, the sweepstakes were distributed in the vicinity of Negara and Melaya, but now it has started to spread eastwardly. The community of Pasar Hamlet, Yehembang Village, Mendoyo, earlier this week found the coupon on the packaging of ABC milk-coffee similar to the fake sweepstake coupon at Banyubiru and Lateng, Negara. The coupon is encountered at each entrance to house compound. The sweepstake coupon carrying the signature and photograph of the Metro Jaya Police Chief were alleged fake. A number of local residents said on Wednesday (Mar 30) that they found a laminated paper in small piece on the entrance area to their house compound. When opened, it contained sweepstake coupon from the product ABC milk-coffee. One of the residents, Ni Putu Mulyawati, 27, said the coupon

on behalf of ABC’s milk-coffee was found in front of her stall. “I have found it when opening my stall. I was about to call but luckily my husband prevented me to do so as it was a fraud,” she explained. Her party was getting more confident after knowing that her neighbors also got a similar coupon in their courtyard. Possibly, the distribution of such fake sweepstakes deliberately targeted the Yehembang and surrounding areas. Another resident, Dewa Putu Mahardika, 31, claimed to have seen a car passing through Jalan Kuru Setra at Pasar Hamlet on Tuesday (Mar 29) midnight. On the other hand, the Village Head of Yehembang, I Ketut Wadia, appealed his citizens to be alert and careful against any fraud impersonating sweepstakes. They included a fraud via short message services (SMS). The impact of devastating earthquake measuring 8.9 Richter scale and tsunami of about 4meter striking northeastern Japan will have a significant impact on the tourism of Indonesia. Director of Domestic Tourism Promotion, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, M. Faried, predicted there would be a decrease of tourist visit up to 10 percent. “Decline in the tourist visit in national level due to tsunami disaster in Japan will certainly take place several months ahead. We estimate the tourist visit will drop in the average range of 30-10 percent,” said Faried in Kuta last Tuesday. According to Faried, Japanese market occupied the top five positions after Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and China. Ministry of Culture and Tourism would encourage every festival organized by regencies and cities throughout Indonesia to recover the market. “In Bali alone, we will support some festivals. Among others, there are Festival Buleleng, Festival Kintamani, Festival Legian, Kuta Karnival, Sanur Village Festival and several other local events,” he explained. Meanwhile, the Head of Bali Government Tourism Office, Ida Bagus Kade Subhiksu, said the visit of Japanese tourists began to decline as the aftermath of natural disaster. Cancellations and delays of Japanese tourists were estimated to be experienced by many

hotels outside the area of Nusa Dua, Kuta and Sanur. “Since 2008, Japanese market has decreased because of global crisis. Although the data on daily visits (Mar 11-14) showed an increase to 36 percent compared to 2010, the impact of disaster will be felt within the past three months,” he said. Despite a decline in tourist arrivals after Australia as the largest, he said, his party continued to make an effort for tourism promotion through the Internet and promotion activities abroad. “We keep on doing tourism promotion, such as participating in the world’s largest tourism exhibition, the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) Berlin, Germany, as well as exhibitions and tourism exchanges like JATA World Travel Fair,” he said. He added that such a move could become a means for promotion of Indonesia tourism, especially Bali because German and Japanese tourist visit to Bali showed an increasing trend recently. On the other hand, the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Asso-

ciation (PHRI) of Bali Chapter hoped the scanning measure was carried out wholeheartedly to Japanese tourists travelling to Bali in relation to the issue of nuclear radiation exposure until such an issue vanished. “Examination or radiation should be done continuously. Otherwise, it will result in a perception that government lacks of seriousness. Additionally, the condition will have an impact on tourism in Bali,” said Secretary General of PHRI Bali, Ferry Markus. Ferry also hoped that examination was not only applied to passengers originating from Japan, but also to aircraft and passengers passing through Japan. Bomber kills 12 in attack on convoy in Pakistan Associated Press Writer

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – A suicide bomber struck a convoy carrying a prominent hardline Islamist leader in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday, killing 12 people in what was the second attack that targeted the politician in as many days, police said. Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of the Jamiat Ulema Islam party, told local TV after the attack in Charsadda town that he was unharmed but his vehicle was slightly damaged. The attack came a day after a suicide bomber blew himself up amid a crowd of Rehman’s supporters minutes after he passed by in a vehicle. Rehman has been an outspoken supporter of the Afghan Taliban, but some militants in Pakistan have shown a willingness to target anyone connected to the U.S.-backed government. U.S. diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks last year also revealed that Rehman allegedly sought support from U.S. officials in Pakistan despite his fierce criticism of Washington in public.

The 12 dead from Thursday’s attack included at least three policemen, said Liquat Ali Khan, police chief in Peshawar city. The blast also wounded at least 20 people. It was unclear if the bomber was on foot or on a motorcycle. Local TV footage showed a police truck damaged by the blast, its front partially ripped off and its side covered in shrapnel holes. Several nearby shops were also damaged and their goods spilled out into the street. On Wednesday, a suicide bomber riding a motorcycle blew himself up at a police checkpoint that was surrounded by Rehman’s supporters who had showed up to greet him as he traveled to Charsadda to address a public gathering. The blast left Rehman unharmed but killed 13 others. It was unclear at the time whether the bomber was targeting Rehman and his supporters, or if they just happened to be there when he hit the checkpoint. But Thursday’s attack indicated that Rehman was indeed being targeted.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

U.S. captures major Guatemalan drug trafficker Reuters

GUATEMALA CITY – U.S. and Guatemalan agents captured Guatemala’s top drug trafficker on Wednesday as the United States pitches in to help curb drug cartels’ expanding reach in Central America. Soldiers and police in helicopters swooped into Guatemala’s second largest city, Quetzaltenango, and arrested Juan Ortiz-Lopez in his home, where he appeared to be only lightly guarded by two men, the Guatemalan interior ministry said. Ortiz-Lopez, 41, is considered Guatemala’s most important drug smuggler by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, an indictment by a U.S. prosecutor said. Heavily armed agents landed at the air force base in Guatemala City with Ortiz-Lopez, handcuffed and wearing a leather jacket, and escorted him and two bodyguards to court. The suspects are accused of smuggling tonnes of cocaine through Guatemala to Mexico and the United States over the past decade, according to the U.S. indictment. “This is the capture of a big fish,” Guatemala’s Interior Minister Carlos Menocal told a news conference. He said Ortiz-Lopez and his associates were likely to be extradited to the United States. Ortiz-Lopez’s capture follows the arrest in October of his henchman, Mauro Solomon, in another

joint operation as Washington tries to stop Guatemala from being sucked deeper into Mexico’s drugs wars. Guatemala is struggling to prevent Mexican cartels from destabilizing parts of the country, a poor but democratic U.S. trading partner and a major coffee and sugar exporter. Officials worry that Central America’s weak governments do not have the capacity to contain the spreading threat of cartels as their armies and police are no match for gangs equipped with rocket launchers and semi-automatic weapons. Authorities are increasingly turning to international help in stabilizing the plant and stemming the tide of radiation, while simultaneously dealing with the other disaster wrought by a March 11 tsunami: the decimation of hundreds of miles (kilometers) of northeastern coastline, the displacement of tens of thousands and the deaths of an estimated 19,000 people. “We find bodies everywhere — in cars, in rivers, under debris and in streets,” a police official from the hard-hit Fukushima prefecture said Thursday. He spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. Efforts to recover the bodies from the 12-mile (20-kilometer) evacuation zone around the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant have been slowed by the scale of destruction and a wasteland of debris, but also by fears of radiation. Police in that prefecture dressed in full radiation suits grabbed 19 corpses from the rubble on Wednesday, the police official said. KUPANG - More than 1,447 people fled their homes after a flood swept through Malaka Barat subdistrict, Belu district, East Nusa Tenggara province, on Monday. The figure excluded those from three flooded-villages of Mota‘Ain, Sikun and Fofoe, Jhon Blegur, an employee of local public health service post, said on Wednesday. It was still unclear where residents of the three villages were taking refuge as land communication to the villages was cut off, he said. There was no other transport mode except speed boat to reach the villages, he said. “Up till now there is still a big flood. However, the

water level is not as high as that when the dike collapsed a few days ago,” he said. He said all the evacuees were being sheltered at four different places. Belu deputy district head Lodovikus Taolin said the flood affected dozens of 36 villages in the subdistrict after four rivers flowing through Mutis nature preserve overflowed, forcing thousands of people to evacuate to higher grounds. Among the flooded villages are Alas Selatan, Rainawe, Fahiluka, Lawalu, Railor, Naimana, Kleseleon, Motaulun, Umatoos, Lasaen, Fafoe, Sikun, Oanmane, Forekmodok, Angkaes, Wederok and Umalawain. Jhon Blegur said the flood was the biggest to hit the area in the past five years.

Government to stop importing rice as of March 31 Antara

MEDAN - The government looks set to stop importing rice as of March 31, citing the ongoing grand harvest and adequate stocks. “Rice imports will be stopped because they are no longer needed. Right now rice stocks are enough as almost all the country`s main rice-producing regions see grand harvest,” Deputy Agriculture Minister Bayu Krisnamurthi said following a dialog with the national logistics agency (Bulog) and its working partners here on Wednesday.

The dialog was designed to find problems related to rice trading in North Sumatra. Krisnamurthi said the current rice stocks were enough to meet consumption for five to six months ahead. On a national scale, since the government issued permits to rice importers some time ago rice imports had reached 1.6 million to 1.7 million tons. The rice imports had been used to build national stocks including market operations to keep down the rising rice prices, he said. “Rice stocks are really safe. Even rice stocks in some regions

such as North Sumatra are very safe or enough to meet consumption until the end of this year due to the ongoing harvest. So there will be no problem if the rice imports are stopped,” he said. He said six ships carrying 25,000 tons of imported rice were on their way to Belawan port in Medan. It would not be problem even if the rice imported by the North Sumatra branch of Bulog would arrive at the port after March 31. “What we will stop is rice imports conducted as of March 31 because we have decided to stop importing rice,” he said.

Bali Today Tanah Ampo Harbor not suitable with international standard DENPASAR – The Regent of Karangasem Regency, Wayan Geredeg, stated that the cruise harbor in Tanah Ampo is currently unable to accommodate large ships. “The addition on the dock is needed. It needs around 154 meters more so it will become 300 meters,” he added. During the event of law socialization regarding the harbor on Thursday, March 31, 2011, Geredeg said that the current size of the dock make the large cruise ship can not use it. “I will personally come to Jakarta to give report to the Transportation Ministry so the harbor can be developed properly,” the Regent explained. He said that he will try to enlarge the harbor by the assistance of the ministry because if it stays like now, the harbor will not be able to accommodate the international ships, the main purpose for Tanah Ampo harbor. From Palm-leaf to Keyboards Probably, you have watched or are going to watch arja operetta or Ramayana Ballet during the visit in Bali. It would be more convenient if it is enjoyed while having dinner of Balinese cuisine. At the same time, you watch the beauty of culture and taste the delicacy of local culinary. You may hear the language spoken by players or puppeteer was not understandable. Of course, it is Balinese language. As Japanese and Chinese, Balinese language also has its own characters. They consist of some 18 main characters and 10 vowel sounds. Ordinarily, Balinese characters are used to write palm-leaf manuscript or lontar. Such characters are incised with sharp knife or stylus. When the writing works have completed, they should be rubbed with a blend of oil and lamp shoot to blacken them. So they are visible easily. Since the works were performed manually, the copying of a manuscript took a long time. At a glance, Balinese characters look like Old Javanese, Tamil (India). It is inseparable from historical aspect where they had similarity of genealogical lines. Today, Balinese characters still have restricted use, namely at school for local subject from elementary school to senior high

school. It is becoming the responsibility of local government to preserve and develop Balinese language in order it could survive in the midst of the growth of other languages like Bahasa Indonesia and foreign languages. Balinese language poses a medium and spirit of Balinese culture. To preserve Balinese culture should also simultaneously maintain and use of Balinese language in daily life. In other words, speaking Balinese language also characterizes one of the identities as a Balinese. Among the use of other languages, Balinese language should remain to give a space to grow and develop. Other than speaking and teaching it at schools, it should also accommodate the need of modern community or use in wider functions of language. Balinese community receives abundant heritages of lontar or palm-leaf manuscripts from the predecessors retained by individuals and museums. They carry many aspects of knowledge, ranging from philosophy, local healing, literature, architecture, agriculture, herbal practice, astrology and so forth. Therefore, if they could be interpreted and presented in popular language, they could become attractive information for young generation and saleable books for

commercial needs. Today, there is also a trend of poising the tradition with modern science namely by reinterpreting the indigenous wisdoms that are relevant to the current time. People will get balanced inputs from the past and current orientation. Of course, such treasures will be beneficial for the conservation and future development of Balinese culture because it stays in touch with its original roots. OVERVIEW: If there’s just one dish that people remember after a visit to Bali, it’s this famous delicacy, usually known by its Indonesian name, Babi Guling. INGREDIENTS: 1 suckling pig, weighing about 6-8kg 1½ tbsp salt 200 shallots, peeled and sliced 100 gr cloves garlic, peeled and sliced 50 gr ginger, peeled & chopped 300 gr candlenuts, chopped 350 gr fresh turmeric, peeled &chopped 3 tbsp coriander seeds, crushed 80 gr laos, finely chopped 120 gr bird’s-eye chilies, sliced 10 stalks lemon grass, finely sliced 1 tbsp black peppercorns, crushed 1 tsp dried shrimp paste, roasted 5 fragrant lime leaves, finely shredded 2 salam leaves 2½ tbsp oil 4 tbsp turmeric water PREPARATION: Ensure inside of suckling pig is completely cleaned out. Season inside and outside with salt. Combine all other ingredients, except turmeric water, and mix thoroughly. Fill inside of suckling with mixture, close belly with string or thin satay skewer. Rub the outside of the pig with turmeric water until the skin is shiny yellow. Place suckling pig on roasting rack and roast in hot oven (220°C / 425°F) for approximately 1 hour. Rest for 10 minutes in warm place before serving. When serving, first remove the crisp skin with a strong carving knife, then loosen meat from the bones and cut into even dice or slices. Place a heaped tablespoon of stuffing on each serving plate, and then top with meat and skin. Traditionally this dish is eaten with Jukut Nangka Mekuah and steamed rice.

BUSINESS Japan impact on U.S. economy more than realized: trade group Reuters

DETROIT - The impact on the U.S. economy of the Japanese crisis is far greater than realized, a top trade group said on Wednesday. U.S. companies and industries rely heavily on Japanese-made automotive products and high-tech electronics, but the U.S. Business and Industry Council said in a report there is an even greater dependence on less well-known Japanese products. These include industrial equipment like machine tools and energy-generating turbines. While the federal data studied by the trade group, which represents 2,000 small- and medium-sized U.S. manufacturers in many industries, was from 2009, it said trade figures for last year strongly indicate the reliance rose considerably in 2010.

“Many more American manufacturing industries than typically recognized — and especially advanced, capital- and technology-intensive sectors — are vulnerable to production disruptions stemming from the earthquake, and to the aftershocks that may continue for several years,” the council said in a report entitled “A SupplyChain Earthquake?” “Such disruptions could greatly slow America’s already sluggish economic recovery, as these industries generate an out-sized share of the country’s best-paying jobs and technological innovation,” it added.

However, the council, which has criticized U.S. trade policy for encouraging the shift of too much advanced manufacturing outside the country, also said the instability offers opportunities as U.S.-made products are substituted for the Japanese-made ones, potentially boosting the recovery. On a broader scale, American economic growth could be expanded by hundreds of billions of dollars annually by limiting import growth rates, the council said. Higher domestic production also would boost the country’s tax revenue without raising taxes.

SEOUL - The South Korean won bounced to a 2-1/2 year high against the dollar early on Thursday, on growing market expectations that rising inflationary pressures will persuade the government to let the local currency advance. It opened local trade at 1,100.1, the highest intraday level since midSeptember 2008, taking its year-todate gain to 3.15 percent. The five-year won interest rate swap rate edged down one basis point to 4.16 percent, with one-year IRS steady at 3.67 percent. While import penetration rates for 2010 are not available, the council said in most cases the growth rates of U.S. imports of these Japanese products rose dramatically last year. “Although Japan’s presence in the American automotive and electronics markets has attracted the most attention, Japan’s presence in many U.S. non-electronics capital goods markets is larger,” the council said. “Consequently, as long as so many advanced manufacturing industries rely so heavily on Japanese machinery and components, the crown jewels of America’s industrial base will remain vulnerable to Japan’s fragile geology,” it added. In the auto sector, numerous automakers have idled plants or cut production to account for a shortage of parts coming from Japan. Nissan Motor Co Ltd said on Wednesday it would resume normal operations at all its Japanese plants, except its Iwaki engine facility, by mid-April. The Japanese automaker said the production schedules of its Japanese plants will be determined by the availability of parts. It said the impact of the earthquake through March was a reduction in output of 55,000 vehicles. The damage to some assembly and parts factories by the earthquake in Japan has led to an industry-wide production loss of at least 400,000 vehicles to date in Japan. Meanwhile, Nissan’s Taiwan affiliate said it will check radiation levels on all car parts imported from Japan, while its cars will have stickers on their windscreens in an effort to reassure customers of their safety.

Sakurai also said he hoped the government could ask the public to broadly shoulder the burden for reconstruction, signaling that a tax hike may emerge as an option. Senior ruling party lawmakers have said total spending for several extra budgets that the government is set to compile this year will be around 10 trillion yen. Asked how the government will finance extra budgets to pay for quake-related costs, Sakurai told a news conference: “When considering the magnitude , I don’t think it will be something like 10 trillion yen,” signaling the amount will be much higher. “We also need to take into account the bond market,” Sakurai said, suggesting that the government would prefer not to issue too much in extra bonds to fund steps for disaster relief.

“If we can ask the public to broadly share the burden, we’d like to do so,” he said. Sakurai’s remarks are in line with those of Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who said on Tuesday he would not rule out any source of funding for reconstruction, including a tax increase or abandoning a plan to cut corporate tax. The government is likely to set aside 2 trillion yen for disaster relief in its first emergency budget to be submitted to parliament in April, the Nikkei newspaper said on Wednesday. Analysts say the government will probably need two more extra budgets for reconstruction in the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit northeast Japan on March 11. The government is still juggling delivering aid to the worst-hit areas with a protracted battle to contain the world’s worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl 25 years ago. It estimated last week that damage to roads, homes, and factories and other infrastructure from the magnitude 9.0 quake and deadly tsunami could top 25 trillion yen, making it the world’s costliest natural disaster.

LONDON – Prince William looks like someone who has it all: royal status, a charming fiancee, good health, and an easy touch with his future subjects. But there is one thing he lacks: a full head of hair. Casual observers who have not paid much attention to Britain’s future king in the years before his recent engagement to Kate Middleton have been surprised by the extent of the 28-year-old’s hair loss. William still cuts a tall, imposing figure, but his bald spot has been spreading as his hairline recedes. It’s even more apparent since his 26-year-old brother Prince Harry still sports a luxuriant supply of tousled red hair. The British tabloids have been merciless in their coverage, constantly punning the “hair to the throne” theme, and comparing his hair loss to that of his father, Prince Charles, and the follically challenged prime minister, David Cameron. William keeps his hair short, as befits a Royal Air Force helicopter rescue pilot, but the military look only emphasizes the way his hairline has changed. Is hair loss dampening William’s appeal? Jennifer Engelhart, a 19-year-old student, doesn’t think he should worry. “He’s got the prince appeal and I don’t think ... the lack of hair can ever take that away,” she said. Zoe Robinson, another student, also doesn’t see a problem with the thinning hair: “It’s just kind of a part of him, isn’t it?” William’s receding hairline has a genetic link. His father, Charles, and his grandfather, Prince Philip, also experienced it, although at a slower pace. Dr. Bessam Farjo, a British hair restoration surgeon who has treated patients as young as 14, said William should take steps now to keep as much hair as possible. “Considering his young age and the unpredictability of where his hair loss is going to end, his main priority should be to stabilize his situation,” Farjo said. “Some medications certainly have a track record of stopping the hair loss so long as the person continues to use (them).” Farjo said it has become socially acceptable over the last decade for men to intervene to prevent hair loss. There is a simpler solution: William could just follow in his grandmother’s footsteps and develop a fondness for hats.

Group reports finding shipwreck in Lake Michigan Associated Press Writer

HOLLAND, Mich. – An organization that documents shipwrecks said it has found the wreck of a 60-foot, single-masted sloop in Lake Michigan that may date back to the 1830s while looking for remnants of a plane that crashed into the lake more than 60 years ago. The wreck was found off southwestern Michigan in water about 250 feet deep between Saugatuck and South Haven, Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates announced this week. The discovery was made while working with author Clive Cussler and his sonar operator Ralph Wilbanks of the National Underwater & Marine Agency. The group was searching for the remnants of Northwest Airlines Flight 2501, which crashed into the

lake in 1950, killing 58 people. “Sometimes, when you’re looking for one thing, you come across another,” shipwreck researcher Craig Rich told The Grand Rapids Press of the discovery. The vessel sits upright and is in relatively good condition, Hollandbased Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates said. The sloop’s construction and design are consistent with ships built in the 1820s and 1830s. Video of the wreck is

expected to be shown April 16 at a social event in Holland. “It’s fascinating stuff,” Cussler, who has worked with Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates to locate other wrecks, told the newspaper. “It’s not the Titanic or anything like that. But it is rather historic just for the era in which it sank.” The ship likely was moving goods across the lake when it went down, Rich said, and it could be the oldest shipwreck discovered by Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates. Rich said the group hopes to identify the ship by the summer and begin researching its story. And the group plans to explore the wreck this year. “If we can put a name to it, we’ll figure out what the story is and, if not, it’ll be a mystery wreck,” he said.

Baltic Sea letter in a bottle found 24 years later Associated Press Writer

MOSCOW – Nearly a quartercentury after a German boy tossed a message in a bottle off a ship in the Baltic Sea, he’s received an answer. A 13-year-old Russian, Daniil Korotkikh, was walking with his parents on a beach when he saw something glittering lying in the sand. “I saw that bottle and it looked interesting,” Korotkikh told The Associated Press on Tuesday. “It looked like a German beer bottle with a ceramic plug, and there was a message inside.” His father, who knows schoolboy German, translated the letter, carefully wrapped in cellophane and sealed by a medical bandage. It said: “My name is Frank, and I’m five years old. My dad and I are traveling on a ship to Denmark. If you find this letter, please write back to me, and I will write back to you.” The letter, dated 1987, included an address in the town of Coesfeld.

The boy in the letter, Frank Uesbeck, is now 29. His parents still live at the letter’s address. “At first I didn’t believe it,” Uesbeck told the AP about getting the response from Korotkikh. In fact, he barely remembered the trip at all; his father actually wrote the letter. The Russian boy and the German man met each other earlier this month via an Internet video link. Korotkikh showed Uesbeck the bottle where he found the message and the letter that he put in a frame. The Russian boy said he does not believe that the bottle actually spent 24 years in the sea: “It would not have survived in the water all that time,” he said. He believes it had been hidden under the sand where he found it — on the Curonian Spit, a 100-kilometer (60-mile) stretch of sand in Lithuania and Russia. In the web chat earlier this month, Uesbek gave Korotkikh his new address to write to and promised to write back when he receives his letter.

First Mercury images in orbit show lots of craters Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK – Think the moon has many craters? New photos from the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury show the tiny inner planet has far more impressive battle scars from regular high-speed peltings by space rocks. NASA’s Messenger spacecraft, which began orbiting the planet less than two weeks ago, reveals a pockmarked planet full of craters from pieces of asteroids and comets.

“Mercury has had an exposed surface for at least 3.5 to 4 billion years and some of those surfaces are extremely cratered to the point where there are so many craters they start to obscure one another,” said mission chief scientist Sean Solomon. He said it was surprising how many secondary craters there are. Those are craters created by the falling soil kicked up from space rock collisions. Those initial space rock crashes “throw out a lot of material in the explosive process,” Solomon said. One area of the far north of Mercury had never been seen by previous spacecraft on mere fly-bys. The new images show scatterings of secondary craters, almost like a loaded pizza, but not the primary crater that was first carved out. The region is also so far north that the sun barely gets above the horizon and casts long shadows.

“It’s heavily cratered,” Solomon said Wednesday. “It may have happened on a particularly bad day.” The secondary craters usually are six miles wide but can be as much as 15 miles wide, much larger than secondary craters on the moon, Solomon said. He said that could be because the chunks of asteroids and comets are moving faster as they get closer to the gravitational pull of the sun so they smack Mercury harder, causing the soil to bounce higher and make bigger secondary craters. The fact that Mercury, unlike the moon, is shrinking and has a magnetic field could be another factor. Mercury is also darker and appears more weather-beaten than the moon, because of “the constant bombardment of the surface by dust particles and small meteoroids,” Solomon said.

LONDON - Manchester United have already lost 4-0 at West Ham United this season and, with a patched-up defence, they cannot afford a repeat on Saturday as the Premier League title race resumes. A second-string United side crashed out of the League Cup at Upton Park and with Rio Ferdinand, John O’Shea, Jonny Evans and Rafael da Silva all ruled out, manager Alex Ferguson will be short of defensive options. NEW YORK – Carmelo Anthony scored 39 points for the second straight game, including the tiebreaking jumper with 1:08 left, and the New York Knicks rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat the New Jersey Nets 120-116 on Wednesday night. Chauncey Billups added 33 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Amare Stoudemire scored 23 points for the Knicks, who have won two in a row after a six-game losing streak and trimmed their magic number for clinching a playoff spot to three. Anthony scored only two points in the fourth quarter after a 20-point third, but it was the basket the Knicks needed in the first meeting since they beat out the Nets in the race to acquire the All-Star forward. Deron Williams had 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in his return from a six-game absence with an injured wrist, but was short on a potential tying jumper in the final seconds and appeared hurt again after going down trying to chase down his miss. MIAMI – Novak Djokovic reached the Miami semi-finals by beating Kevin Anderson, extending his winning streak and avenging a loss two years ago to the South African in the same city. World number two Djokovic on Wednesday defeated unseeded Anderson 6-4, 6-2 in a quarter-final match at the $9 million ATP Masters 1000 hardcourt tournament. “When I was two breaks up in the second set I was comfortable sure, but not before that,” Djokovic said. “In the second set I found that momentum, but I went through situations where I faced a couple of break points in the first and second set, and I saved them. “I was fortunate in those moments.” Djokovic, who has won all of his 22 matches this season, will face American Mardy Fish in the semi-finals. Djokovic has now won 24 consecutive matches dating back to last year’s Davis Cup final. “You obviously get confidence with 24 wins in a row,” he said. “It keeps getting better. Pedrosa to undergo surgery after Jerez Spanish rider Dani Pedrosa will undergo surgery after the Spanish Grand Prix after being diagnosed with intermittent compression of the subclavian artery. The condition causes numbness and lack of strength in his left arm, a problem that affected the Honda rider during the season-opening race in Qatar. Pedrosa, who underwent surgery last October after a double fracture of his left collarbone, will have another operation after this weekend’s race and will then make the most of the month available before the next race in order to recover. In the operation, the titanium

plate and screws inserted in October will be taken out of the collarbone in order to release the compression pressure. “It’s never nice to have an operation, but we’ve had a lot of time searching for an answer to the effects of this injury and I’m relaxed

because I finally know what has happened,” said Pedrosa. “Now, we are in Jerez and I want to concentrate on the race, working with my team in best possible way to prepare the grand prix. “This race is special, the crowd is always there to give you an extra point and I hope it helps me, as always. SAUBER team boss Peter Sauber has hailed Sergio Perez’s performance in the Australian Grand Prix as “outstanding”. The Mexican rookie put on a superb showing in Melbourne on his way to seventh place, although he and team-mate Kamui Kobayashi were latter disqualified for a technical infringement. Perez was the only driver who managed to complete the race on a one-stop strategy, and Sauber conceded he was impressed by his performance.

“Yes, I am surprised,” said Sauber. “My first impression was okay because we followed him the last season in GP2 and he did a good job and also during the pre-season tests we were happy with him but in the race he was outstanding. “Thirty-five laps with used soft tyres, that is incredible.” Sauber admitted the team did not consider stopping just once before the race, as it didn’t believe it was a possibility. “It was never a decision - it was absolutely clear to do a second or

third stop and we looked for a window but then the times were so good and after 40 laps we spoke about maybe it is possible and the race engineer spoke with Sergio and he said yes maybe it is possible to drive to the end.” Technical director James Key also praised Perez after his maiden grand prix. “Outstanding for a rookie driver in first race. We felt he was quick anyway but I think to be faced to do 38 laps on a soft tyre which no one believed possible was an outstanding.”
