‘American Idol’ host Ryan Seacrest accused of misconduct in Variety report
LOS ANGELES - A former stylist for “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest on Monday accused him of sexual misconduct, although Seacrest denied the accusations last November. Suzie Hardy told Hollywood publication Variety that Seacrest sexually harassed her for six years, starting in 2007, when she became his personal stylist at E! News. Seacrest, who is also co-host of ABC television’s daytime talk show “Live with Kelly & Ryan” and producer of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” made public the woman’s accusations last November, when he also issued a denial. E!, a unit of Comcast Corp, conducted an internal inquiry into her accusations but said in January that it had found insufficient evidence to support her claims. Seacrest’s lawyer Andrew Baum said on Monday that Variety’s decision to run Hardy’s story was upsetting. Baum said in a statement that Hardy had previously asked for money to stay silent. “They (Variety) were told that the accuser threatened to make those false claims against him unless he paid her $15 million,”
he said. “At that time, the claimant threatened to issue a demonstrably false press statement unless she was paid. Instead, my client proactively and publicly denied the claims and agreed to fully cooperate with E!’s investigation about the matter.” ABC did not immediately reply to a request for comment on Monday. Hardy’s lawyer did not reply to a request for comment on Variety’s account. Hardy’s interview with Variety on Monday marked the first time she was identified and details of her claims were revealed. Hardy, whose employment ended in 2013, said she felt the E! investigation was incomplete and one-sided. E! said in a statement on Monday that its investigation by an outside lawyer was “extremely comprehensive and thorough” and that “any claims that question the legitimacy of this investigation are completely baseless.” Talent show “American Idol,” with Seacrest as host, is scheduled to return to television on March 11 on Walt Disney Co’s ABC network after a 14-year run on Fox ended in 2016. Seacrest is the latest celebrity to be accused of sexual misconduct in a scandal that has rocked Hollywood and beyond since October 2017. (rtr)

BUDAPEST - Hungarian director Ildiko Enyedi’s first film in nearly two decades, nominated for the 2018 Oscar in the foreign film category, tells the story of two people searching for love - in their dreams as deer in a forest. Aiming to bag Hungary’s third Academy Award in three years at the weekend, “On Body And Soul” features Endre and Maria who each night share the same dream, despite finding it difficult to connect with each other during their lives. As deer, they meet and fall in love in a beautiful, wintry landscape. The scenes where the elegant deer meet by a lake to drink and court one another run parallel with Endre and Maria’s shy, awkward attempts to get closer to each other in the slaughterhouse where they work. Filming the real deer, named Picur (Tiny) and Goliat, proved a challenge, said Zoltan Horkai, who runs an animal training centre in
Godollo, near Budapest. “Deer are not like domesticated animals, cooperating with man is not coded in them,” Horkai said. “In winter, bucks and does are not even together normally and we had to convince them to move in tandem.” The movie scooped the Golden Bear at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival last year. “When Ildiko came to me with the script, she told me these two people act really awkwardly in life, and she would like to show how it works with the animal scenes,” Horkai said. “And it worked... although their relationship was built more on trust than love.” Horkai, who specialises in studying and training wolves, used two wolves on leashes to herd the deer from a distance. Indonesia seizes luxury yacht linked to 1MDB probe
JAKARTA - Indonesia on Wednesday seized a luxury yacht on the island of Bali sought by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) as part of a multi-billion dollar corruption investigation linked to Malaysian state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). “We have been inspecting the crew since yesterday and now we are taking action, since we have received approval from the court,” Agung Setya, director of economic and special crimes at Indonesia’s criminal investigation bureau, told Metro TV. Television broadcast images of Indonesian officials talking to the crew on board the yacht, the Equanimity, which was moored at Benoa Bay. There were 34 crew on board, said Setya, adding that Indonesian authorities had worked with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investiga-
tion on the money laundering case, although he could not say how the investigation would proceed. “We will see how this develops... Whether we can do a joint investigation later or whether we can hand it over later, we are in the process of collecting and investigating.” 1MDB is at the centre of moneylaundering probes in at least six countries, including the United States, Switzerland and Singapore. A total of $4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB by high-level officials of the fund and
their associates, according to civil lawsuits filed by the DOJ in the past two years. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak set up 1MDB in 2009 and previously served as chairman of its advisory board. He and the fund have denied any wrongdoing. In August 2017, the DOJ asked for a stay on its civil lawsuits seeking to seize more than $1.7 billion in assets allegedly bought with stolen 1MDB funds because it was conducting a related criminal probe. Among the assets sought were a $250 million luxury yacht bought by Malaysian financier Jho Low, named as a key figure in the U.S. lawsuits. The lawsuits said Low used proceeds diverted from 1MDB to procure Equanimity, which it de-
scribed as a 300-foot (91-m) yacht registered in the Cayman Islands. The vessel has an interior clad in marble and gold leaf, a spa and sauna, a 20-metre (66-ft) swimming pool on deck, a movie theatre, a lift and a helipad, says a website on luxury charters, yachtcharterfleet.com. Low’s whereabouts are unknown and his Hong Kong company has not responded to requests for comment. In an emailed statement through his representative in June last year, Low said the DOJ’s actions were an example “of global overreach in pursuit of a deeply flawed case”. Other assets allegedly bought by Low with stolen 1MDB funds include a private jet, a hotel and real estate in New York, and a $107-million interest in EMI Music Publishing.
Some assets have been returned. Australian model and actress Miranda Kerr handed over millions of dollars worth of jewellery that U.S. authorities say was given to her by Low, including a jewelry set gifted to her during a 2014 excursion on Equanimity. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio also returned to authorities an Oscar once owned by actor Marlon Brando and other items the United States says were funded with 1MDB money. Karangasem child prison focuses on character and mental building
AMLAPURA - Though having problems with the law, the future of children must be well maintained. The Karangasem Child Prison is well aware of what to do in the coaching process. In line with the target of district government, Karangasem Child Prison is determined to realizing a child friendly home program in the prison environment, with a mentoring process that focuses on the character and mental building of the children. Chief of Karangasem Child Prison, Lalu Jumaidi, said the coaching process is meant to prepare children having
problems with the law so they can change their behavior and become a useful generation. In terms of handling methods, this man from Lombok said the character and mentality of the children are directed by involving them in extracurricular activities such as music, sports and skill training. This program has been implemented since the beginning by referring to Law No.11/2012 on Juvenile Justice System. Unfortunately, he acknowledged that currently the program cannot run maximally because the prison building in the Susuan hamlet, Karangasem, is still prominent with the image of prison. “Referring to Law No. 11/2012 on Juvenile Justice System, child prison should not have iron bars while our buildings are still like that,” said Lalu
Jumaidi, recently. To encourage the strengthening of the coaching program, the prison has formulated a total aggregation plan for all prison buildings, particularly the child prison, including the facilities. The proposal related to the rehabilitation plan reaches IDR 2.9 billion. It has been submitted to the Bali provincial government. He hoped the proposal can be approved soon, so it can be realized this year. Currently the child prison is inhabited by 12 children in conflict with the law originating from all regencies / municipality across Bali. The most prominent is the convicted case of sexual harassment. Karangasem Counseling House (Bapas) is now being intensively disseminating the Law No.11/2012 on Juvenile Justice System. The prison emphasized on some things, chiefly the issues of children going up against the law, when making dissemination to schools. If any children are dealing with the law, one of the absolute requirements is that the children should be made a community research. So, in the process of enforcing the law, the children must be accompanied by prison authority in the process of investigation, prosecution, trial and when the verdict is decided, so they remain to be supervised. Head of Karangasem Prison, Ketut Bagus Adi Saputra, asserted that as long as the people under the age of 18 years, even though they have got married or widow though, they are still categorized to be children. Another idea of the Karangasem Prison is how to make Karangasem a child-friendly city. To that end, Karangasem Prison will make its best this year. In case there are children dealing with the law, whether they are as perpetrators, witnesses or victims, the prison will seek to prevent detention of the children except there has been a verdict with permanent legal force. For almost a year after this effort has run, only three children of Karangasem are serving the sentence because there has been a permanent legal decision. The three children are the convicted cases of collective sexual harassment from Subagan who had a scene in Karangasem once resulting in a furor. “We can still do diversion for the rest with three working areas, namely Karangasem, Klungkung and Bangli. We want our working areas to be child friendly,” he said. Chief of Karangasem Prison (Lapas), Rochkidam, said that in general there are five points serving as reference for the performance of prison officers namely the implementation of employee code of ethics, professionalism, synergy and innovation, implementation of e-governance and service with the heart. “Its final goal is to provide excellent service. In addition, the prison must also be able to provide couching for the implementation of the values of Pancasila (five basic principles) and unity diversity,” he said. (kmb31)

especially rice, is still given by the command post officers. Each person is given 0.4 gram per day. And the rice quota is given for the needs of a week. Aerobic exercise slows cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease
CONNECTICUT - Cardiovascular exercise training may help slow the decline in brain function seen in Alzheimer’s patients, a new review of past research suggests.
Researchers assessed data from 19 studies conducted between 2002 and 2015 that examined the effects of exercise on cognitive ability in 1,145 people at risk of or diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Nearly 90 percent were randomized controlled trials, which are the most reliable type of study. Most participants were female (71%); the average age was 77. Just over half of the study subjects participated either in an aerobic exercise program, or an aerobic program plus a resistance training intervention. The rest of the study participants received only usual care. Aerobic exercises include brisk walking, jogging, swimming, cycling and other activities that boost the heart rate and strengthen the heart and lungs. On average, participants exercised 3.5 days per week at moderate intensity, with each session lasting 30 to 60 minutes. While the programs tested in some of the studies were as short as 8 weeks, others lasted more than 6 months. Results indicated that exercise - specifically, cardiovascular exercise - had a strong favorable impact, researchers reported in the Journal of the American
Geriatrics Society. “We found a statistically significant increase in cognitive function that favored the groups receiving the exercise interventions compared to the non-exercise control groups,” lead study author Gregory Panza, from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, told Reuters Health by email. For example, he said, among people with similar cognitive test scores at the start, “an individual in the exercise group would score higher on the cognitive function tests than 69% of patients in the non-exercise control group” by the end of the study. Cognitive function was most commonly assessed using the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), but other validated tools also were used. The tools evaluate things like problem solving and processing speed, motor ability, multi-tasking and recollection of events as well as object recognition and ability to plan, all of which serve as proxies for mental sharpness. The positive effect of exercise wasn’t the only thing researchers discovered. “True, we found that brain function improved,” coauthor Linda Pescatello, also from the University of Connecticut, said in a phone interview. “But in the group that did not receive exercise, there was actually a deterioration. This deterioration was unanticipated and really accentuates the importance of our findings.” (rtr)

Teen sexting may be more common than you think
CALGARY - At least one in four teens are receiving sexually explicit texts and emails, and at least one in seven are sending sexts, a new study suggests. Sexting can be a healthy way for young people to explore sexuality and intimacy when it’s consensual, said lead study author Sheri Madigan of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute and the University of Calgary in Canada. The trouble is that when it’s coerced, or when sexts are shared without permission, it can feel a lot like cyberbullying, with many of the same dangerous mental health consequences. More than one in 10 teens are forwarding these sexts without consent, the study found. And roughly one in 12 teens have had sexts they sent shared without their permission. “Today’s teens often do not separate their online and offline lives - it is all the same to them,” Madigan said by email. “This is hard for parents to grasp.” Most teens don’t report sexting at all, and those who do send or receive sexually explicit messages, videos or images tend to be older, researchers report in JAMA Pediatrics. Researchers examined data on sexting habits from 39 previously published studies with a total of 110,380 teens. Participants were 15 years old on average, although they ranged in age from about 12 to 17. Because kids today typically have a smartphone by the time they’re 10 years old, parents should address sexting as part of any early
conversations they have with kids about practicing safe sex and protecting their privacy online, Madigan advised. “It can be helpful for parents to think about sexting in the same way they think about sex,” said Elizabeth Englander, author of an accompanying editorial and director of the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater State University. Rather than forbid sexting outright, parents should be teaching children to consider the consequences of doing it and help kids understand how to resist pressure to do anything that makes them feel uncomfortable, Englander said by email. “Youth think of adults as worriers and as over-estimating risk, particularly when technology is involved, and many will tune out adults who just tell them `don’t do this,’” said Lisa Jones, a researcher at the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. “But sexting can be risky, and certainly nonconsensual sharing of explicit images is hurtful and even potentially criminal,” Jones, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. The study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how sexting might cause health problems for teens. Another drawback is that many of the smaller studies in the analysis used different definitions of sexting that made it difficult to determine how often teens are sharing explicit words, videos or photos. According to the Chief of Badung Municipal Police, IGAK Suryanegara, when confirmed on Monday (Feb. 26), the advertisement broadcast of videotron will remain to be shut down even though the request for not dismantling the unauthorized videotron building
is confirmed. To that end, the entire power lines of the building established in 2011 have now been cut off. “The building is not demolished because local hamlet asked not to dismantle it and will be used for hall ornament. All the power lines have been cut off so that it will no longer be active,” he said. The billboard building, said IGAK Suryanegara, violates the Regulation of Badung Regent No.80/2014 Article 9 about billboard. Article 9 essentially forbids the installation of billboards in holy places or social facilities such as hamlet hall or wantilan. “The regent regulation declares if there is any violation, it will be imposed with sanction in the form of demolition,” he said. He acknowledged that indeed the Regent Regulation
No.80/2014 was issued after the building was made in 2011. Besides, the owner is also constrained by permissions that are not submitted, so it ultimately goes up against the new regent regulation. “When the videotron at Tuban was built in 2011, the regent regulation has not prohibited such development. However, due to being constrained when submitting permission, it was finally constrained by Regent Regulation No. 80/2014,” he concluded. According to him, currently the Regent Regulation No.80/2014 is still waiting for the amendment. The amendment will depend on the results of studies. “Amendment of the regent regulation is made because there are proposals from toll road management to enable videotron to be installed on toll roads,” he added. Corporatization of farmers effective to empower farmers
DENPASAR - President Joko Widodo wanted a corporatization of farmers to make their life prosperous. Corporatization is the integration of all components in the upstream of agriculture including production, milling, packaging and marketing. Chairman of the Commission for Business Competition Supervision (KPPU), Muhammad Syarkawi Rauf, said that farmers are expected not to sell grain but sell rice. When selling the unhulled rice farmers will only get IDR 3,800 pe kg from the rice sold. However, by selling rice, farmers can earn revenue of
IDR 7,500-IDR 8,000 per kg from the rice produced. By that way, farmers’ income will be greater. To perform the corporatization of farmers, it must be done by integrating the existing agricultural business in the upstream. The upstream agriculture should be integrated with rice milling companies, nurseries, fertilizer provider, agricultural equipment, transportation, marketing and packaging. “If we can integrate the upstream in the form of community-owned enterprises in it, President Jokowi hoped that our farmers can sell rice,” he said.
Having integrated the upstream components, the marketing is also expected to no longer be worked on conventionally but should be able to apply e-commerce or online marketing applications. With this application, farmers can directly sell their rice products to household consumers or end users. “Consumers at home can order rice at farm shops in the center of rice retailers. This will very effectively cut rice distribution chains. So, the difference in rice price in the upstream and in consumer level can be relatively thin,” he explained. As long as the rice trade system
remains like the current one (long), the rice trade will be dominantly controlled by middlemen or rice traders. One of the important roles in corporatization of farmers is Logistics Agency (Bulog). Bulog can be a guarantor of farmers when they want to apply for loans in banks. According to him, all this time banks are difficult to channel credit to farmers. “Bulog can be a guarantor because when farmers come to bank they will not be approved because they are not trusted. To be trusted, Bulog must come to the bank as a guarantor,” he said.
The loans borrowed by farmers can be used to purchase a drying machine to dry their grains. By doing so, the water content of grain will reduce. So, farmers will no longer sell grain with high water content whose selling price is cheaper. “When dried, the water content is lower and the selling price becomes higher,” he said. Farmers are also integrated with rice mills. In Indonesia, there are 170,000 rice mills both of small and medium size. Surely, this integration will be very effective in empowering farmers. (kmb42)

Tourism in Nusa Penida becomes a challenge to survival of Bali cattle
SEMARAPURA — Tourism development in the Nusa Penida Islands, Klungkung district, has grown rapidly in recent years. It is not only touted to ‘displace’ seaweed farming but also becomes challenges for the livestock sector, especially Bali cattle. “People tend to get instant results. Working in tourism sector is considered to be a solution. This is a challenge for Bali cattle,” said the Head of the Klungkung Agriculture Agency, Ida Bagus Gde Juanida, on Tuesday (Feb. 27). Amid the trap, this official stated that he has done a measure to encourage the community to raise livestock by improving quality through intensive coaching, promotion of special efforts like must-pregnant cow and artificial insemination. It is fully funded by central government. “Nusa Penida has been established into a sustainable Bali cattle development area. Central government has provided various programs including the operation officers for the artificial insemination to reporting of must-pregnant cows and the calves born,” he explained. District government also takes part in the program as indicated by the provision of grant for calf procurement. This year, it targets 17 groups with respective budget of about IDR 180 million. “This fund is also intended for the cage construction where the program is made every year,” he said. Furthermore, to boost the population is also done by intensifying the insemination where this year is targeted to reach 10,400 heads, decreased from the number in 2017 amounting to more than 13,000. “Last year, the achievement was almost one hundred percent.

So, it is an opportunity for the cattle ranch there (Nusa Penida—Ed),” he said. Based on data of 2017, the population of cattle in the islands of the Blue Paradise Island (Nusa Penida) reached 24,192 heads and this tends to be stable compared to the previous year. BANGLI — The Nyepi or Day of Silence celebrated this year is quite special when compared to the previous ones. This time the Nyepi falling on March 17 will coincide with the Saraswati Day. Nevertheless, the implementation of Nyepi will certainly continue to run as usual. Meanwhile, procession of Saraswati celebration should have finished before 06:00 local time. Chairman of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) of Bangli Chapter, Nyoman Sukra, said that related to the Nyepi and Saraswati holiday falling on the same day, there has been a decision from higher priests (sulinggih). In connection with the implementation of Nyepi, the celebration is decided to keep running as usual. Nyepi is held for entirely one day (24 hours), starting from 06:00 until 06:00 the next day. Meanwhile, the feast of Saraswati should be held before 06:00 local time. For piodalan or temple anniversary activities coinciding with the feast of Saraswati, the devotees are urged not to carry out a great ceremony. “There should be no grandiose piodalan activity, just say notification. During the piodalan, we also appeal not to use gamelan music and psalmodies, but only internal prayers. The ceremony should have ended at 6 o’clock in the morning so that after that Nyepi can run as usual,” he explained. Related to that, Sukra said he would soon submit a circular to the public. His council claimed to
have requested the help of Public Welfare Division of Bangli district government to disseminate the circular to all the hamlets and government agencies. He also explained that in the Nyepi celebration, his council has arranged about dispensation for people having babies, the sick or childbearing families. The dispensation has been delivered to hamlet chief and will be arranged by pecalang or customary village security guard. He hoped the upcoming Nyepi celebration can run smoothly without any disturbance. Associated with the implementation of the Pengerupukan feast day, Sukra urged the public not to make ogoh-ogoh (papiér mâché demon) having something to do with the regional leadership election. The ogoh-ogoh is expected to be made in the form of bhutakala (evil spirits) and the attributes set up must be in accordance with religious teaching. “We have submitted an appeal to chief of customary villages that on Pengrupukan there will be no attributes of political party or candidates. Ethically, the ogoh-ogoh must take the form of bhuta kala and may not be in the form of candidates and some other things related to the regional leadership election. No one may consume alcoholic drink and the ogoh-ogoh may not be paraded crossing each hamlet territory. It will become the responsibility of pecalang and sekaa taruna or customary village youth club,” he concluded. (kmb40)
SEOUL - South Korea summoned the Chinese ambassador on Tuesday to lodge a complaint over a Chinese military aircraft entering the South’s air defence territory, the second such incident this year, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday. The Chinese aircraft flew for more than four hours inside South Korea’s air defence identification zone (KADIZ) on Tuesday, prompting the South to scramble multiple fighter jets to track it, a South Korean defence official told Reuters. China’s Ambassador Qiu Guohong was told the military jet’s flight into South Korean airspace had been “unfortunate” and urged to prevent similar instances from occurring again, the ministry said in a statement. Three other Chinese officials based in South Korea had been summoned to the defence ministry earlier in the day for the incident, which occurred near South Korea’s
island of Ulleungdo off its east coast. The aircraft was told to “halt its threatening flight” and “any other actions that could raise the possibility of sudden conflict”, said the South Korean defence official, adding Chinese officials told South Korea’s military the aircraft’s movements had been part of regular military exercises. Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said China’s sending of an aircraft for training in the “relevant air space” was completely in line with international law and practice. “Air defence identification zones are not territorial air space. There is absolutely no justification for South Korea to criticise China on the basis of a so-called ADIZ,” Lu told a daily news briefing. SYDNEY - Whole villages were flattened and water sources spoiled by a powerful earthquake that killed at least 20 people, residents said on Wednesday as rescuers struggled to reach the hardest-hit areas in Papua New Guinea’s remote, mountainous highlands.

The magnitude 7.5 quake rocked the rugged Southern Highlands province some 560 km (350 miles) northwest of the capital, Port Moresby, triggering landslides, damaging mining, gas and power infrastructure, and cutting communications. Scores of aftershocks have hampered rescue efforts and rattled nervous villagers over the past two days, including a 6.0 tremor just before 1 p.m. (0300 GMT) on Wednesday registered by the U.S. Geological Survey. Most of the confirmed fatalities were in or around the provincial capital of Mendi, where television pictures showed collapsed buildings and landslides, and the town of Tari, according to authorities and residents contacted by Reuters. “It’s massive destruction,” Stanley Mamu told Reuters by telephone from Tari, 40 km (25 miles) from the epicentre. One person was killed in Tari and another five were killed in a landslide in a nearby village, he said. “There are buildings on the ground and landslides along the roads. My home was destroyed. The main sources of water were all flooded, it’s dirty and brown and people can’t drink that water,” Mamu said. Elsewhere rivers had silted up or become blocked, villages damaged and gardens and water tanks destroyed, though the biggest landslides hit sparsely populated areas, according to Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), an air transport operator that flew a
three-hour survey on Tuesday. A cloudy morning and fog in the afternoon on Wednesday hampered official efforts to assess damage by helicopter, let alone distribute aid, said Kaigabu Kamnanaya, Director of Risk Management at Papua New Guinea’s National Disaster Centre. Miners and oil and gas companies were also assessing the damage, which included ensuring a 700-km (435-mile) gas pipeline that connects to a coastal liquefaction plant was intact before it could be reopened. Australia sent a C-130 military transport plane to help with aerial surveillance. The office of Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said in a statement it would likely take days before the extent of the damage was clear. A police officer in Mendi said landslides had buried homes and blocked a river residents worried could flood the town. “We are really in deep fear,” said police sergeant Naring Bongi. “It continues to be active. We didn’t sleep well and stayed awake until daybreak ... no helicopters or government officials have come to our assistance.” Medical supplies and heavy equipment to clear landslides were also needed, said James Justin, a spokesman for provincial MP Manasseh Makiba, as well as food in places where productive gardens had been wrecked. “The casualties have yet to be confirmed but many more than 20 people have lost their lives,” he said. Earthquakes are common in Papua New Guinea, which sits on the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire”, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates. BUSINESS An economy in ruins leaves Gazans with hard choices
GAZA - The man who makes crisps, chocolate and vanilla snacks for Gaza had just finished explaining how his business was going through the worst economic crisis of his life when the lights went out, shutting down his factory. Again. Wael Al-Wadiya has been running his food manufacturing business since 1985 – in a Gaza Strip that was very different from the one in which he and two million other Palestinians now live.
Back then Israeli settlers were still in Gaza, the Islamist militant group Hamas did not yet exist, and Palestinians were still two years away from the first of the uprisings against Israeli military occupation that introduced the word ‘Intifada’ to the world. Sitting in a slowly declining
industrial estate near the fortified border with Israel, the 51-year-old confectioner says that Gaza has been brought to a near-standstill by a decade of Israeli-led blockades, and internal Palestinian divisions. “The situation is very miserable. People’s ability to buy has fallen to a minimum, therefore our businesses and businesses in Gaza are suffering as never before,” said Wadiya. He has cut production by 70 percent and wages by 30 percent. Employees who used to work each day now may work one day in three. “Unless a miracle happens, factories and companies will close down and it will be the real death of the economy,” he said. There has long been poverty in Gaza, but with unemployment now at 43.6 percent, according to the Palestinian Bureau of Statistics, even once-wealthy merchants are defaulting on debts, causing other businesses to collapse, like dominoes. Many in Gaza blame Israel for the hardships, accusing it of placing an economic blockade on the enclave that has drastically reduced the movement of people and goods. But Gazans also fault their own leaders, complaining of a power struggle between Hamas, the armed group that seized military power in Gaza in 2007, and Fatah, the secular party of Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Both Hamas and Fatah levy taxes. Both run competing bureaucracies. And even electricity has become a tool of political power - until recently the blackouts that plagued Wadiya’s factory were exacerbated by Abbas cutting money for Israeli current for Gaza. Fatah says Hamas exploits money it collects from electricity consumers for its own purposes. Israel, which pulled its settlers and soldiers out of Gaza in 2005, says it has been forced to control access to and from the territory to stop Hamas sending out gunmen and bombers, and from smuggling in weapons or material to make them. The Israeli military says that it carries out “constant calculated risk management” between allowing humanitarian aid through to Gazans, while contending with Hamas, which “attempts to exploit the aid intended for Gaza’s civilian residents”.

A combination of war, isolation, and internal rivalries
has left Gaza in its current state. Last year Abbas cut the salaries of 60,000 government employees in Gaza by 30 per cent, leaving them with little to spend in shops and markets after paying off bank loans. The sums of bounced checks in Gaza nearly doubled from $37 million to $62 million between 2015 and 2016, and then again to $112 million in 2017, according to the Palestinian Monetary Authority. This lack of buying power contributed to a drop in imports through the one remaining commercial crossing with Israel, with just 350 truckloads per day compared with 800 in the last quarter of 2017. Some merchants took a religious initiative in December in which they offered to write off customers’ debts using the hashtag ‘Sameh Toajar’ - ‘Forgive, and Be rewarded (by God).’ It was supported by Hamas and other factions, but the scale of the debts was too great for such a small-scale remedy. “Gaza has gone into clinical death and is in need of root solutions, real and sustainable, and not temporary or short-lived solutions,” said Maher al-Tabba, a Gaza economist. At the other end of the economic scale from the merchants are Suhaib, Shadi and Ahmed al-Waloud, who scavenge through garbage near their home in northern Gaza searching for plastic to sell to recycling plants. Their father was one of the Gazans who lost their jobs in Israel more than a decade ago when Israel closed the door to thousands of Palestinian workers following Hamas’s seizure of control. “I have been used to doing this job since I was a child,” said Suhaib, 19, from Beit Lahiya. But they now earn just enough to “stay alive,” he said, because the price paid for second-hand plastic has fallen by 80 per cent. “Nowadays there is not much work. People are not throwing away a lot of plastic.” The question that dominates Gaza is whether hard times will make Palestinians more inclined to support attacks on Israel, or less so, because they fear reprisals. Ali al-Hayek, the chairman of the Palestinian Businessmen Association in Gaza, said that total collapse of the economy would lead to instability that would be in nobody’s interests. “Gaza is living through a real humanitarian crisis,” he said. “An economic collapse will lead to a security collapse that will cause trouble for the international community and for Israel.” (rtr)

It is a sanctified building made and put at a special location through magical and mystical calculation. Each sikut satak of home yard must have two kinds of shrine, namely the Pangulun Karang in the form of kemulan or three-
chambered shrine and Panunggun Karang functioned as mentioned before. According to I Gusti Ketut Dalem, a permanent lecturer at the Dharma Duta Faculty of the IHDN Denpasar, Tugun Karang shrine is the abode of Ida Ratu Sedahan Panunggun Karang, in charge of security guard in the house compound. “Actually, he has existed before there are people taking advantage of the land area either intended for housing or moors. According to the elders, they have diverse manifestations according to the place and position. There is manifestation as Jero Dukuh or elder figure, elephant, horse, tiger and other forms,” he said. Many people do not know that Tugun Karang is the gateway of psychical beings coming from psychical world to physical world. Moreover, if a human is willing to enter the psychical dimension must seek permission and pass through this gateway. The deity abiding in the Tungun Karang shrine also plays an important role to protect residents from psychical attacks, such as witch. However, lately many people are ignorant and do not believe in the power of psychical beings in Tugun Karang. Jegog is a form of gamelan music indigenous to Bali, Indonesia, played on instruments made of bamboo. The tradition of jegog is centered in Jembrana, a region in Western Bali. In recent years jegog has started to become popular in other regions of Bali with a few groups being established in central Bali to entertain tourists. International interest has been spread by tourists visiting Bali and by recordings. There are virtually no ensembles outside of Bali with the exception of at least two groups in Japan (Sekar Sakura and GeinohYamashirogumi, the latter’s having been used in 4 of the tracks in their score for the film Akira as well as on the final track of EcophonyRinne ), one in the United States (Sekar Jaya) and one in Germany. Jegog music is very fast, loud, rhythmic and precise. Pieces last from a few minutes to as long as thirty minutes. Jegog instruments have a four-note scale that roughly corresponds to the four pitches of a dominant 7th chord in Western music. All instruments have eight bamboo keys. Some instruments have two keys for each pitch slightly detuned so that the pitches beat when they are played together. Other instruments have a two octave range with four pitches in a low octave and the same four pitches anoctave higher. In this case the instrument will be paired with another instrument that is slightly detuned. Taken together the ensemble has a range of five octaves. Most Jegog ensembles have instruments that have keys that
are made of bamboo that are split at one end and then half of the tube is removed. READ Peliatan Customary Village Holds Ngeredag Desa What Does It Mean? The other end remains intact and functions as a resonator for the split part. The keys are suspended on a wooden frame and struck with mallets (called pangguls), made out of wood or rubber. There are also Jegog ensembles with instruments called JegogTingklik. These smaller instruments are used primarily with children. The keys are made of bamboo slats mounted above a resonatorbox. The lowest instrument in a Jegog ensemble is also called a Jegog. The ensemble gets its name from this instrument. The keys of the Jegog instrument are as long as 3 meters in length and a pitch as low as 60 hertz. The instrument is so large, and the mallets are so heavy that it takes two people to play it. The players crouch on a platform on the top of the instrument and alternate playing the keys. The Jegog instrument has the lowest octave of the ensemble. Each pair of pitches are detuned by as much as 7 hertz. In this octave, that is almost a whole tone. The keys are arranged 1’ 2’ 3’ 4’ 1 2 3 4, one being the lowest pitch and 4 being the highest. The four keys on the left are the higher pitches of the detuned pairs and the four on the right are the lower ones. One octave higher than the Jegog is an instrument called the Undir, and an octave above that is the Kuntung. The instruments are small enough to be played by one person each. The Undir is still big enough that the player needs to crouch on a platform on the top of it to play it. There are two Undir and two Kuntung. The Undir and Kuntung have the same arrangement of keys as the Jegog. These five instruments together play the melody (called the bun). Some ensembles have a high pitch flute called a suling that also plays the melody. (kmb)

Russian truce plan fails to halt bombing of Syria’s Ghouta
BEIRUT - A Russian call for a five-hour truce on Tuesday failed to halt one of the most devastating campaigns of the Syrian war, where residents said government warplanes resumed striking the eastern Ghouta region after a brief lull. Diplomatic sources meanwhile said the chemical weapons watchdog, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, opened an investigation into attacks in eastern Ghouta to determine whether banned munitions were used. Political leaders in France, the United States and Britain said this month they would back targeted military action against Damascus if there were proof chemical weapons had been used by forces under President Bashar al-Assad, Russia’s ally. Moscow and Damascus blamed rebels for the collapse of the truce, saying fighters had shelled a safe route intended for civilians to leave the enclave. The insurgents denied such shelling, and a senior U.S. general accused Moscow acting as “both arsonist and firefighter” by failing to rein in Assad. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow would press on with a plan to stage similar daily pauses in the fighting, allowing aid to be delivered to eastern Ghouta through what Russia describes as a
humanitarian corridor. But the United Nations said it was proving impossible to aid civilians or evacuate wounded, and said all sides must instead abide by a 30-day truce sought by the U.N. Security Council. “We have reports this morning there is continuous fighting in eastern Ghouta,” U.N. humanitarian spokesman Jens Laerke said. “Clearly the situation on the ground is not such that convoys can go in or medical evacuations can go out.” Hundreds of people have died during 10 days of government bombardment of the eastern Ghouta, an area of towns and farms on the outskirts of Damascus. The assault has been among the most devastating air campaigns of a war now entering its eighth year. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it was ready to access eastern Ghouta to deliver life-saving aid, but the proposed five-hour pause was too short. Without mentioning Russia, the author of the proposal, ICRC Middle East director Robert Mardini said humanitarian corridors had to be well-planned and agreed to by all warring sides, while people should be allowed to leave of their own free will. Lebanon’s Hariri arrives in Riyadh for first visit since ‘resignation’
RIYADH - Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri arrived in Saudi Arabia, his office said on Wednesday, his first trip to the kingdom since his abrupt resignation during a visit there in November which caused a brief political storm in the region. At the time Lebanese officials accused Saudi Arabia of forcing long-time ally Hariri to quit, putting him under effective house arrest until France intervened. Riyadh has denied this. Hariri returned home weeks later and withdrew his resignation, drawing a line under the crisis that had raised fears for Lebanon’s economic and political stability. A statement by Hariri’s media office said he left Beirut late on Tuesday responding to an invitation from King Salman. Hariri would meet King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, his office said. JAKARTA - Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo said he was saddened by so many greedy officials of regional administrations nabbed by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). KPK already caught red handed and arrested a number of regents, regional politicians on graft charge in the past month. “This time it was in Southeast Sulawesi, KPK again nabbed a city mayor and governor hopeful,” the Minister said here on Wednesday. He referred to the arrest of Asrun, who is a candidate to content the forthcoming gubernatorial election of the province and the Kendari city mayor Adriatma Dwi Putra. “What makes it more saddening is the governor hopeful and the mayor are father and son,” he said. He said KPK already hinted to him about something not right about to take place in Kendari when he met with the KPK leaders on Monday. The Minister said on Monday he and acting Southeast Sulawesi Governor were invited by KPK leaders to a meeting on Monday. “And only yesterday the meeting was widely published in that province,” he added. “Greed apparently had blinded the mayor and his father that they
failed to see the signal with meeting between the minister , acting Governor and KPK leaders,” an observer said. Tjahjo said many heads of regional administrations were obviously unaware that KPK is watching them closely especially those in areas considered to be rampant with corruption. The Minister said KPK has a list of 360 areas in 22 province suspected of being infested with corruption. “The focus of KPK activities covers 360 regional administrations - regencies, mayoralty, almost all areas,” he said. JAKARTA - Indonesia`s National Anti-Narcotics Agency (BNN) has arrested three people suspected of money laundering of funds worth Rp6.4 trillion (US$468 million) derived from drug trafficking involving Togiman and Haryanto Candra networks. “Based on information from the Financial Transaction Report and Analysis Center (PPATK), BNN arrested the three suspects, namely HR on Feb 12, DY on Feb 13, and FH on Feb 14, from different locations in Jakarta on suspicious transaction worth Rp6.4 trillion sourced from drug cases involving Togiman and Haryanto Chandra networks,” BNN`s Deputy for drug eradication Inspector General of Police Arman Depari stated here on Wednesday. DY has at least six fictitious companies for financial transactions, with several drug kingpins, he added. “The suspect DY has some bank
accounts in his employees` names, in domestic as well as overseas banks,” Arman continued. During 2014 to 2016 period, one of the fictitious company, PT PSS, transferred Rp6.4 trillion of fund with 2,136 false invoices. “The money was transferred through some banks by the suspects DY, HR, and FH,” Arman noted. The authority has seized three apartment units, six home stores, a house, three cars, and two shops in South Jakarta and Rp1.65 billion in cash. The confiscated assets were worth some Rp65.96 billion. The three suspects allegedly violated article 137 of law no. 35/2009 on narcotics and article 3, 4 and 5 of law no. 8/2010 on money laundering. “BNN has also seized assets owned by another suspect T, a drug kingpin who currently serves jail sentence in West Kalimantan, in the form of Rp2.35 billion in cash and a car,” Arman revealed. BARCELONA - French driver Pierre Gasly expects to be ripping through racesuits this season after complaining on Tuesday that Formula One’s new halo head-protection device had torn holes in his overalls as he got in and out of the car. The 22-year-old Frenchman, starting his first full season with Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso, expressed his frustration after completing 82 laps of a cold Circuit de Catalunya on the second day of pre-season testing. “I don’t like it (the halo). While the three years of the McLaren-Honda partnership were plagued by reliability issues and a lack of performance, Toro Rosso have impressed with two solid days of testing so far this week. BARCELONA - French driver Pierre Gasly expects to be ripping through racesuits this season after complaining on Tuesday that Formula One’s new halo head-protection device had torn holes in his overalls as he got in and out of the car. The 22-year-old Frenchman, starting his first full season with Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso, expressed his frustration after completing 82 laps of a cold Circuit de Catalunya on the second day of pre-season testing. “I don’t like it (the halo). It’s just a big mess to get in the car and get out,” he told reporters. “I think my suit is already broken. We’ll have to ask for many suits from (supplier)

It’s actually quite weird. “With all the winglets you have on the halo you cannot really pull, to get out you cannot really touch it,” said the Frenchman. The halo, which extends up from a central pillar to circle the driver’s head, is designed to protect against flying objects and is making its debut this season as a mandatory safety addition. Getting in and out, particularly for taller drivers, is more awkward than when cockpits were com-
pletely open. Toro Rosso have switched engines this season, linking up with McLaren’s former partners Honda. While the three years of the McLaren-Honda partnership were plagued by reliability issues and a lack of performance, Toro Rosso have impressed with two solid days of testing so far this week. Gasly’s team mate, New Zealander Brendon Hartley, did 93 laps on Monday. “We didn’t have any troubles,” said the Frenchman, who raced in Japan with a Honda team last year before making his Formula One debut. Russian truce plan fails to halt bombing of Syria’s Ghouta
BEIRUT - A Russian call for a five-hour truce on Tuesday failed to halt one of the most devastating campaigns of the Syrian war, where residents said government warplanes resumed striking the eastern Ghouta region after a brief lull. Diplomatic sources meanwhile said the chemical weapons watchdog, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, opened an investigation into attacks in eastern Ghouta to determine whether banned munitions were used. Political leaders in France, the United States and Britain said this month they would back targeted military action against Damascus if there were proof chemical weapons had been used by forces under President Bashar al-Assad, Russia’s ally. Moscow and Damascus blamed rebels for the collapse of the truce, saying fighters had shelled a safe route intended for civilians to leave the enclave. The insurgents denied such shelling, and a senior U.S. general accused Moscow acting as “both arsonist and firefighter” by failing to rein in Assad. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow would press on with a plan to stage similar daily pauses in the fighting, allowing aid to be delivered to eastern Ghouta through what Russia describes as a
humanitarian corridor. But the United Nations said it was proving impossible to aid civilians or evacuate wounded, and said all sides must instead abide by a 30-day truce sought by the U.N. Security Council. “We have reports this morning there is continuous fighting in eastern Ghouta,” U.N. humanitarian spokesman Jens Laerke said. “Clearly the situation on the ground is not such that convoys can go in or medical evacuations can go out.” Hundreds of people have died during 10 days of government bombardment of the eastern Ghouta, an area of towns and farms on the outskirts of Damascus. The assault has been among the most devastating air campaigns of a war now entering its eighth year. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it was ready to access eastern Ghouta to deliver life-saving aid, but the proposed five-hour pause was too short. Without mentioning Russia, the author of the proposal, ICRC Middle East director Robert Mardini said humanitarian corridors had to be well-planned and agreed to by all warring sides, while people should be allowed to leave of their own free will. With its Ghouta offensive, the Syrian government is drawing on the military methods it has used to crush its opponents in other parts of Syria, including eastern Aleppo in late 2016. (rtr)

Lebanon’s Hariri arrives in Riyadh for first visit since ‘resignation’
RIYADH - Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri arrived in Saudi Arabia, his office said on Wednesday, his first trip to the kingdom since his abrupt resignation during a visit there in November which caused a brief political storm in the region. At the time Lebanese officials accused Saudi Arabia of forcing long-time ally Hariri to quit, putting him under effective house arrest until France intervened. Riyadh has denied this. Hariri returned home weeks later and withdrew his resignation, drawing a line under the crisis that had raised fears for Lebanon’s economic and political stability. A statement by Hariri’s media office said he left Beirut late on Tuesday responding to an invitation from King Salman. Hariri would meet King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, his office said. Hariri’s office said earlier he had accepted the invitation delivered to him by Saudi envoy Nizar alAloula, whom he met in Beirut on Monday, and that he would go to Riyadh as soon possible,
without setting a date. Hariri’s resignation thrust Lebanon onto the frontline of a Middle East contest for power, pitting a Saudi-led bloc against Iran and its allies that include the Lebanese Shi’ite Hezbollah movement. After his return, Hariri’s coalition government, which includes Hezbollah, reaffirmed a state policy of staying out of conflicts in the Arab world. The Washington Post said Mohammed bin Salman complained he had been unfairly criticised over Hariri’s resignation. “Now he’s in a better position,” the newspaper quoted Mohammed bin Salman as saying. JAKARTA - Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo said he was saddened by so many greedy officials of regional administrations nabbed by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). KPK already caught red handed and arrested a number of regents, regional politicians on graft charge in the past month. “This time it was in Southeast Sulawesi, KPK again nabbed a city mayor and governor hopeful,” the Minister said here on Wednesday. He referred to the arrest of Asrun, who is a candidate to content the forthcoming gubernatorial election of the province and the Kendari city mayor Adriatma Dwi Putra. “What makes it more saddening is the governor hopeful and the mayor are father and son,” he said. He said KPK already hinted to him about something not right about to take place in Kendari when he met with the KPK leaders on Monday. The Minister said on Monday he and acting Southeast Sulawesi Governor were invited by KPK leaders to a meeting on Monday. “And only yesterday the meeting was widely published in that province,” he added. “Greed apparently had blinded the mayor and his father that they
failed to see the signal with meeting between the minister , acting Governor and KPK leaders,” an observer said. Tjahjo said many heads of regional administrations were obviously unaware that KPK is watching them closely especially those in areas considered to be rampant with corruption. The Minister said KPK has a list of 360 areas in 22 province suspected of being infested with corruption. “The focus of KPK activities covers 360 regional administrations - regencies, mayoralty, almost all areas,” he said. The central government and KPK have often reminded regional administrations and local law enforcement agencies telling them of areas and sector in which corruption are easily committed, he said. “Yes, we are sad and deeply concerned with the fact. We and the president have repeatedly warned against committing corruption,” he said. JAKARTA - Indonesia`s National Anti-Narcotics Agency (BNN) has arrested three people suspected of money laundering of funds worth Rp6.4 trillion (US$468 million) derived from drug trafficking involving Togiman and Haryanto Candra networks. “Based on information from the Financial Transaction Report and Analysis Center (PPATK), BNN arrested the three suspects, namely HR on Feb 12, DY on Feb 13, and FH on Feb 14, from different locations in Jakarta on suspicious transaction worth Rp6.4 trillion sourced from drug cases involving Togiman and Haryanto Chandra networks,” BNN`s Deputy for drug eradication Inspector General of Police Arman Depari stated here on Wednesday. DY has at least six fictitious companies for financial transactions, with several drug kingpins, he added. “The suspect DY has some bank
accounts in his employees` names, in domestic as well as overseas banks,” Arman continued. During 2014 to 2016 period, one of the fictitious company, PT PSS, transferred Rp6.4 trillion of fund with 2,136 false invoices. “The money was transferred through some banks by the suspects DY, HR, and FH,” Arman noted. The authority has seized three apartment units, six home stores, a house, three cars, and two shops in South Jakarta and Rp1.65 billion in cash. The confiscated assets were worth some Rp65.96 billion. The three suspects allegedly violated article 137 of law no. 35/2009 on narcotics and article 3, 4 and 5 of law no. 8/2010 on money laundering. “BNN has also seized assets owned by another suspect T, a drug kingpin who currently serves jail sentence in West Kalimantan, in the form of Rp2.35 billion in cash and a car,” Arman revealed. BUSINESS An economy in ruins leaves Gazans with hard choices
GAZA - The man who makes crisps, chocolate and vanilla snacks for Gaza had just finished explaining how his business was going through the worst economic crisis of his life when the lights went out, shutting down his factory. Again. Wael Al-Wadiya has been running his food manufacturing business since 1985 – in a Gaza Strip that was very different from the one in which he and two million other Palestinians now live.
Back then Israeli settlers were still in Gaza, the Islamist militant group Hamas did not yet exist, and Palestinians were still two years away from the first of the uprisings against Israeli military occupation that introduced the word ‘Intifada’ to the world. Sitting in a slowly declining
industrial estate near the fortified border with Israel, the 51-year-old confectioner says that Gaza has been brought to a near-standstill by a decade of Israeli-led blockades, and internal Palestinian divisions. “The situation is very miserable. People’s ability to buy has fallen to a minimum, therefore our businesses and businesses in Gaza are suffering as never before,” said Wadiya. He has cut production by 70 percent and wages by 30 percent. Employees who used to work each day now may work one day in three. “Unless a miracle happens, factories and companies will close down and it will be the real death of the economy,” he said. There has long been poverty in Gaza, but with unemployment now at 43.6 percent, according to the Palestinian Bureau of Statistics, even once-wealthy merchants are defaulting on debts, causing other businesses to collapse, like dominoes. Many in Gaza blame Israel for the hardships, accusing it of placing an economic blockade on the enclave that has drastically reduced the movement of people and goods. But Gazans also fault their own leaders, complaining of a power struggle between Hamas, the armed group that seized military power in Gaza in 2007, and Fatah, the secular party of Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Both Hamas and Fatah levy taxes. Both run competing bureaucracies. And even electricity has become a tool of political power - until recently the blackouts that plagued Wadiya’s factory were exacerbated by Abbas cutting money for Israeli current for Gaza. Fatah says Hamas exploits money it collects from electricity consumers for its own purposes. Israel, which pulled its settlers and soldiers out of Gaza in 2005, says it has been forced to control access to and from the territory to stop Hamas sending out gunmen and bombers, and from smuggling in weapons or material to make them. The Israeli military says that it carries out “constant calculated risk management” between allowing humanitarian aid through to Gazans, while contending with Hamas, which “attempts to exploit the aid intended for Gaza’s civilian residents”.

A combination of war, isolation, and internal rivalries
has left Gaza in its current state. Last year Abbas cut the salaries of 60,000 government employees in Gaza by 30 per cent, leaving them with little to spend in shops and markets after paying off bank loans. The sums of bounced checks in Gaza nearly doubled from $37 million to $62 million between 2015 and 2016, and then again to $112 million in 2017, according to the Palestinian Monetary Authority. This lack of buying power contributed to a drop in imports through the one remaining commercial crossing with Israel, with just 350 truckloads per day compared with 800 in the last quarter of 2017. Some merchants took a religious initiative in December in which they offered to write off customers’ debts using the hashtag ‘Sameh Toajar’ - ‘Forgive, and Be rewarded (by God).’ It was supported by Hamas and other factions, but the scale of the debts was too great for such a small-scale remedy. “Gaza has gone into clinical death and is in need of root solutions, real and sustainable, and not temporary or short-lived solutions,” said Maher al-Tabba, a Gaza economist. At the other end of the economic scale from the merchants are Suhaib, Shadi and Ahmed al-Waloud, who scavenge through garbage near their home in northern Gaza searching for plastic to sell to recycling plants. Their father was one of the Gazans who lost their jobs in Israel more than a decade ago when Israel closed the door to thousands of Palestinian workers following Hamas’s seizure of control. “I have been used to doing this job since I was a child,” said Suhaib, 19, from Beit Lahiya. But they now earn just enough to “stay alive,” he said, because the price paid for second-hand plastic has fallen by 80 per cent. “Nowadays there is not much work. People are not throwing away a lot of plastic.” The question that dominates Gaza is whether hard times will make Palestinians more inclined to support attacks on Israel, or less so, because they fear reprisals. In recent years jegog has started to become popular in other regions of Bali with a few groups being established in central Bali to entertain tourists. International interest has been spread by tourists visiting Bali and by recordings. There are virtually no ensembles outside of Bali with the exception of at least two groups in Japan (Sekar Sakura and GeinohYamashirogumi, the latter’s having been used in 4 of the tracks in their score for the film Akira as well as on the final track of EcophonyRinne ), one in the United States (Sekar Jaya) and one in Germany. Jegog instruments have a four-note scale that roughly corresponds to the four pitches of a dominant 7th chord in Western music. All instruments have eight bamboo keys. Some instruments have two keys for each pitch slightly detuned so that the pitches beat when they are played together. Other instruments have a two octave range with four pitches in a low octave and the same four pitches anoctave higher. In this case the instrument will be paired with another instrument that is slightly detuned. Taken together the ensemble has a range of five octaves. Most Jegog ensembles have instruments that have keys that

The other end remains intact and functions as a resonator for the split part. The keys are suspended on a wooden frame and struck with mallets (called pangguls), made out of wood or rubber. There are also Jegog ensembles with instruments called JegogTingklik. These smaller instruments are used primarily with children. The keys are made of bamboo slats mounted above a resonatorbox. The lowest instrument in a Jegog ensemble is also called a Jegog. The ensemble gets its name from this instrument. The keys of the Jegog instrument are as long as 3 meters in length and a pitch as low as 60 hertz. The instrument is so large, and the mallets are so heavy that it takes two people to play it. The players crouch on a platform on the top of the instrument and alternate playing the keys. The Jegog instrument has the lowest octave of the ensemble. Each pair of pitches are detuned by as much as 7 hertz. In this octave, that is almost a whole tone. The keys are arranged 1’ 2’ 3’ 4’ 1 2 3 4, one being the lowest pitch and 4 being the highest. The four keys on the left are the higher pitches of the detuned pairs and the four on the right are the lower ones. One octave higher than the Jegog is an instrument called the Undir, and an octave above that is the Kuntung. The instruments are small enough to be played by one person each. The Undir is still big enough that the player needs to crouch on a platform on the top of it to play it. There are two Undir and two Kuntung. The Undir and Kuntung have the same arrangement of keys as the Jegog. These five instruments together play the melody (called the bun). Tourism in Nusa Penida becomes a challenge to survival of Bali cattle
SEMARAPURA — Tourism development in the Nusa Penida Islands, Klungkung district, has grown rapidly in recent years. It is not only touted to ‘displace’ seaweed farming but also becomes challenges for the livestock sector, especially Bali cattle. “People tend to get instant results. Working in tourism sector is considered to be a solution. This is a challenge for Bali cattle,” said the Head of the Klungkung Agriculture Agency, Ida Bagus Gde Juanida, on Tuesday (Feb. 27). Amid the trap, this official stated that he has done a measure to encourage the community to raise livestock by improving quality through intensive coaching, promotion of special efforts like must-pregnant cow and artificial insemination. It is fully funded by central government. “Nusa Penida has been established into a sustainable Bali cattle development area. Central government has provided various programs including the operation officers for the artificial insemination to reporting of must-pregnant cows and the calves born,” he explained. District government also takes part in the program as indicated by the provision of grant for calf procurement. This year, it targets 17 groups with respective budget of about IDR 180 million. “This fund is also intended for the cage construction where the program is made every year,” he said. Furthermore, to boost the population is also done by intensifying the insemination where this year is targeted to reach 10,400 heads, decreased from the number in 2017 amounting to more than 13,000. “Last year, the achievement was almost one hundred percent.

In connection with the implementation of Nyepi, the celebration is decided to keep running as usual. Nyepi is held for entirely one day (24 hours), starting from 06:00 until 06:00 the next day. Meanwhile, the feast of Saraswati should be held before 06:00 local time. For piodalan or temple anniversary activities coinciding with the feast of Saraswati, the devotees are urged not to carry out a great ceremony. “There should be no grandiose piodalan activity, just say notification. During the piodalan, we also appeal not to use gamelan music and psalmodies, but only internal prayers. The ceremony should have ended at 6 o’clock in the morning so that after that Nyepi can run as usual,” he explained. Related to that, Sukra said he would soon submit a circular to the public. His council claimed to
have requested the help of Public Welfare Division of Bangli district government to disseminate the circular to all the hamlets and government agencies. He also explained that in the Nyepi celebration, his council has arranged about dispensation for people having babies, the sick or childbearing families. The dispensation has been delivered to hamlet chief and will be arranged by pecalang or customary village security guard. He hoped the upcoming Nyepi celebration can run smoothly without any disturbance. Associated with the implementation of the Pengerupukan feast day, Sukra urged the public not to make ogoh-ogoh (papiér mâché demon) having something to do with the regional leadership election. The ogoh-ogoh is expected to be made in the form of bhutakala (evil spirits) and the attributes set up must be in accordance with religious teaching. “We have submitted an appeal to chief of customary villages that on Pengrupukan there will be no attributes of political party or candidates. Ethically, the ogoh-ogoh must take the form of bhuta kala and may not be in the form of candidates and some other things related to the regional leadership election. No one may consume alcoholic drink and the ogoh-ogoh may not be paraded crossing each hamlet territory. SEOUL - South Korea summoned the Chinese ambassador on Tuesday to lodge a complaint over a Chinese military aircraft entering the South’s air defence territory, the second such incident this year, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday. The Chinese aircraft flew for more than four hours inside South Korea’s air defence identification zone (KADIZ) on Tuesday, prompting the South to scramble multiple fighter jets to track it, a South Korean defence official told Reuters. China’s Ambassador Qiu Guohong was told the military jet’s flight into South Korean airspace had been “unfortunate” and urged to prevent similar instances from occurring again, the ministry said in a statement. Three other Chinese officials based in South Korea had been summoned to the defence ministry earlier in the day for the incident, which occurred near South Korea’s
island of Ulleungdo off its east coast. The aircraft was told to “halt its threatening flight” and “any other actions that could raise the possibility of sudden conflict”, said the South Korean defence official, adding Chinese officials told South Korea’s military the aircraft’s movements had been part of regular military exercises. Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said China’s sending of an aircraft for training in the “relevant air space” was completely in line with international law and practice. “Air defence identification zones are not territorial air space. There is absolutely no justification for South Korea to criticise China on the basis of a so-called ADIZ,” Lu told a daily news briefing. The magnitude 7.5 quake rocked the rugged Southern Highlands province some 560 km (350 miles) northwest of the capital, Port Moresby, triggering landslides, damaging mining, gas and power infrastructure, and cutting communications. Scores of aftershocks have hampered rescue efforts and rattled nervous villagers over the past two days, including a 6.0 tremor just before 1 p.m. (0300 GMT) on Wednesday registered by the U.S. Geological Survey. Most of the confirmed fatalities were in or around the provincial capital of Mendi, where television pictures showed collapsed buildings and landslides, and the town of Tari, according to authorities and residents contacted by Reuters. “It’s massive destruction,” Stanley Mamu told Reuters by telephone from Tari, 40 km (25 miles) from the epicentre. One person was killed in Tari and another five were killed in a landslide in a nearby village, he said. “There are buildings on the ground and landslides along the roads. My home was destroyed. The main sources of water were all flooded, it’s dirty and brown and people can’t drink that water,” Mamu said. Elsewhere rivers had silted up or become blocked, villages damaged and gardens and water tanks destroyed, though the biggest landslides hit sparsely populated areas, according to Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), an air transport operator that flew a

Aerobic exercise slows cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease
CONNECTICUT - Cardiovascular exercise training may help slow the decline in brain function seen in Alzheimer’s patients, a new review of past research suggests.
Researchers assessed data from 19 studies conducted between 2002 and 2015 that examined the effects of exercise on cognitive ability in 1,145 people at risk of or diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Nearly 90 percent were randomized controlled trials, which are the most reliable type of study. Most participants were female (71%); the average age was 77. Just over half of the study subjects participated either in an aerobic exercise program, or an aerobic program plus a resistance training intervention. The rest of the study participants received only usual care. Aerobic exercises include brisk walking, jogging, swimming, cycling and other activities that boost the heart rate and strengthen the heart and lungs. On average, participants exercised 3.5 days per week at moderate intensity, with each session lasting 30 to 60 minutes. While the programs tested in some of the studies were as short as 8 weeks, others lasted more than 6 months. Results indicated that exercise - specifically, cardiovascular exercise - had a strong favorable impact, researchers reported in the Journal of the American
Geriatrics Society. “We found a statistically significant increase in cognitive function that favored the groups receiving the exercise interventions compared to the non-exercise control groups,” lead study author Gregory Panza, from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, told Reuters Health by email. For example, he said, among people with similar cognitive test scores at the start, “an individual in the exercise group would score higher on the cognitive function tests than 69% of patients in the non-exercise control group” by the end of the study. Cognitive function was most commonly assessed using the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), but other validated tools also were used. The tools evaluate things like problem solving and processing speed, motor ability, multi-tasking and recollection of events as well as object recognition and ability to plan, all of which serve as proxies for mental sharpness. The positive effect of exercise wasn’t the only thing researchers discovered. “True, we found that brain function improved,” coauthor Linda Pescatello, also from the University of Connecticut, said in a phone interview. “But in the group that did not receive exercise, there was actually a deterioration. This deterioration was unanticipated and really accentuates the importance of our findings.” (rtr)

CALGARY - At least one in four teens are receiving sexually explicit texts and emails, and at least one in seven are sending sexts, a new study suggests. Sexting can be a healthy way for young people to explore sexuality and intimacy when it’s consensual, said lead study author Sheri Madigan of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute and the University of Calgary in Canada. The trouble is that when it’s coerced, or when sexts are shared without permission, it can feel a lot like cyberbullying, with many of the same dangerous mental health consequences. More than one in 10 teens are forwarding these sexts without consent, the study found. And roughly one in 12 teens have had sexts they sent shared without their permission. “Today’s teens often do not separate their online and offline lives - it is all the same to them,” Madigan said by email. “This is hard for parents to grasp.” Most teens don’t report sexting at all, and those who do send or receive sexually explicit messages, videos or images tend to be older, researchers report in JAMA Pediatrics. Researchers examined data on sexting habits from 39 previously published studies with a total of 110,380 teens. Participants were 15 years old on average, although they ranged in age from about 12 to 17. Because kids today typically have a smartphone by the time they’re 10 years old, parents should address sexting as part of any early
conversations they have with kids about practicing safe sex and protecting their privacy online, Madigan advised. “It can be helpful for parents to think about sexting in the same way they think about sex,” said Elizabeth Englander, author of an accompanying editorial and director of the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater State University. Rather than forbid sexting outright, parents should be teaching children to consider the consequences of doing it and help kids understand how to resist pressure to do anything that makes them feel uncomfortable, Englander said by email. “Youth think of adults as worriers and as over-estimating risk, particularly when technology is involved, and many will tune out adults who just tell them `don’t do this,’” said Lisa Jones, a researcher at the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. “But sexting can be risky, and certainly nonconsensual sharing of explicit images is hurtful and even potentially criminal,” Jones, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. The study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how sexting might cause health problems for teens. To that end, the entire power lines of the building established in 2011 have now been cut off. “The building is not demolished because local hamlet asked not to dismantle it and will be used for hall ornament. All the power lines have been cut off so that it will no longer be active,” he said. The billboard building, said IGAK Suryanegara, violates the Regulation of Badung Regent No.80/2014 Article 9 about billboard. Article 9 essentially forbids the installation of billboards in holy places or social facilities such as hamlet hall or wantilan. “The regent regulation declares if there is any violation, it will be imposed with sanction in the form of demolition,” he said. He acknowledged that indeed the Regent Regulation
No.80/2014 was issued after the building was made in 2011. Besides, the owner is also constrained by permissions that are not submitted, so it ultimately goes up against the new regent regulation. “When the videotron at Tuban was built in 2011, the regent regulation has not prohibited such development. However, due to being constrained when submitting permission, it was finally constrained by Regent Regulation No. 80/2014,” he concluded. According to him, currently the Regent Regulation No.80/2014 is still waiting for the amendment. The amendment will depend on the results of studies. “Amendment of the regent regulation is made because there are proposals from toll road management to enable videotron to be installed on toll roads,” he added. DENPASAR - President Joko Widodo wanted a corporatization of farmers to make their life prosperous. Corporatization is the integration of all components in the upstream of agriculture including production, milling, packaging and marketing. Chairman of the Commission for Business Competition Supervision (KPPU), Muhammad Syarkawi Rauf, said that farmers are expected not to sell grain but sell rice. When selling the unhulled rice farmers will only get IDR 3,800 pe kg from the rice sold. However, by selling rice, farmers can earn revenue of
IDR 7,500-IDR 8,000 per kg from the rice produced. By that way, farmers’ income will be greater. To perform the corporatization of farmers, it must be done by integrating the existing agricultural business in the upstream. The upstream agriculture should be integrated with rice milling companies, nurseries, fertilizer provider, agricultural equipment, transportation, marketing and packaging. “If we can integrate the upstream in the form of community-owned enterprises in it, President Jokowi hoped that our farmers can sell rice,” he said.

This will very effectively cut rice distribution chains. So, the difference in rice price in the upstream and in consumer level can be relatively thin,” he explained. As long as the rice trade system
remains like the current one (long), the rice trade will be dominantly controlled by middlemen or rice traders. One of the important roles in corporatization of farmers is Logistics Agency (Bulog). Bulog can be a guarantor of farmers when they want to apply for loans in banks. According to him, all this time banks are difficult to channel credit to farmers. “Bulog can be a guarantor because when farmers come to bank they will not be approved because they are not trusted. To be trusted, Bulog must come to the bank as a guarantor,” he said.
The loans borrowed by farmers can be used to purchase a drying machine to dry their grains. By doing so, the water content of grain will reduce. So, farmers will no longer sell grain with high water content whose selling price is cheaper. “When dried, the water content is lower and the selling price becomes higher,” he said. Farmers are also integrated with rice mills. In Indonesia, there are 170,000 rice mills both of small and medium size. Surely, this integration will be very effective in empowering farmers. (kmb42)

Karangasem child prison focuses on character and mental building
AMLAPURA - Though having problems with the law, the future of children must be well maintained. The Karangasem Child Prison is well aware of what to do in the coaching process. In line with the target of district government, Karangasem Child Prison is determined to realizing a child friendly home program in the prison environment, with a mentoring process that focuses on the character and mental building of the children. Chief of Karangasem Child Prison, Lalu Jumaidi, said the coaching process is meant to prepare children having
problems with the law so they can change their behavior and become a useful generation. In terms of handling methods, this man from Lombok said the character and mentality of the children are directed by involving them in extracurricular activities such as music, sports and skill training. This program has been implemented since the beginning by referring to Law No.11/2012 on Juvenile Justice System. Unfortunately, he acknowledged that currently the program cannot run maximally because the prison building in the Susuan hamlet, Karangasem, is still prominent with the image of prison. “Referring to Law No. 11/2012 on Juvenile Justice System, child prison should not have iron bars while our buildings are still like that,” said Lalu

To encourage the strengthening of the coaching program, the prison has formulated a total aggregation plan for all prison buildings, particularly the child prison, including the facilities. Currently the child prison is inhabited by 12 children in conflict with the law originating from all regencies / municipality across Bali. The most prominent is the convicted case of sexual harassment. Karangasem Counseling House (Bapas) is now being intensively disseminating the Law No.11/2012 on Juvenile Justice System. The prison emphasized on some things, chiefly the issues of children going up against the law, when making dissemination to schools. If any children are dealing with the law, one of the absolute requirements is that the children should be made a community research. So, in the process of enforcing the law, the children must be accompanied by prison authority in the process of investigation, prosecution, trial and when the verdict is decided, so they remain to be supervised. Head of Karangasem Prison, Ketut Bagus Adi Saputra, asserted that as long as the people under the age of 18 years, even though they have got married or widow though, they are still categorized to be children. Another idea of the Karangasem Prison is how to make Karangasem a child-friendly city. To that end, Karangasem Prison will make its best this year. In case there are children dealing with the law, whether they are as perpetrators, witnesses or victims, the prison will seek to prevent detention of the children except there has been a verdict with permanent legal force. For almost a year after this effort has run, only three children of Karangasem are serving the sentence because there has been a permanent legal decision. The three children are the convicted cases of collective sexual harassment from Subagan who had a scene in Karangasem once resulting in a furor. “We can still do diversion for the rest with three working areas, namely Karangasem, Klungkung and Bangli. We want our working areas to be child friendly,” he said. Chief of Karangasem Prison (Lapas), Rochkidam, said that in general there are five points serving as reference for the performance of prison officers namely the implementation of employee code of ethics, professionalism, synergy and innovation, implementation of e-governance and service with the heart. “Its final goal is to provide excellent service. In addition, the prison must also be able to provide couching for the implementation of the values of Pancasila (five basic principles) and unity diversity,” he said. (kmb31)

‘American Idol’ host Ryan Seacrest accused of misconduct in Variety report
LOS ANGELES - A former stylist for “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest on Monday accused him of sexual misconduct, although Seacrest denied the accusations last November. Suzie Hardy told Hollywood publication Variety that Seacrest sexually harassed her for six years, starting in 2007, when she became his personal stylist at E! News. Seacrest, who is also co-host of ABC television’s daytime talk show “Live with Kelly & Ryan” and producer of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” made public the woman’s accusations last November, when he also issued a denial. E!, a unit of Comcast Corp, conducted an internal inquiry into her accusations but said in January that it had found insufficient evidence to support her claims. Seacrest’s lawyer Andrew Baum said on Monday that Variety’s decision to run Hardy’s story was upsetting. Baum said in a statement that Hardy had previously asked for money to stay silent. “They (Variety) were told that the accuser threatened to make those false claims against him unless he paid her $15 million,”
he said. “At that time, the claimant threatened to issue a demonstrably false press statement unless she was paid. Instead, my client proactively and publicly denied the claims and agreed to fully cooperate with E!’s investigation about the matter.” ABC did not immediately reply to a request for comment on Monday. Hardy’s lawyer did not reply to a request for comment on Variety’s account. Hardy’s interview with Variety on Monday marked the first time she was identified and details of her claims were revealed. Hardy, whose employment ended in 2013, said she felt the E! investigation was incomplete and one-sided. E! said in a statement on Monday that its investigation by an outside lawyer was “extremely comprehensive and thorough” and that “any claims that question the legitimacy of this investigation are completely baseless.” Talent show “American Idol,” with Seacrest as host, is scheduled to return to television on March 11 on Walt Disney Co’s ABC network after a 14-year run on Fox ended in 2016. Seacrest is the latest celebrity to be accused of sexual misconduct in a scandal that has rocked Hollywood and beyond since October 2017. (rtr)

BUDAPEST - Hungarian director Ildiko Enyedi’s first film in nearly two decades, nominated for the 2018 Oscar in the foreign film category, tells the story of two people searching for love - in their dreams as deer in a forest. Aiming to bag Hungary’s third Academy Award in three years at the weekend, “On Body And Soul” features Endre and Maria who each night share the same dream, despite finding it difficult to connect with each other during their lives. As deer, they meet and fall in love in a beautiful, wintry landscape. The scenes where the elegant deer meet by a lake to drink and court one another run parallel with Endre and Maria’s shy, awkward attempts to get closer to each other in the slaughterhouse where they work. Filming the real deer, named Picur (Tiny) and Goliat, proved a challenge, said Zoltan Horkai, who runs an animal training centre in
Godollo, near Budapest. “Deer are not like domesticated animals, cooperating with man is not coded in them,” Horkai said. “In winter, bucks and does are not even together normally and we had to convince them to move in tandem.” The movie scooped the Golden Bear at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival last year. “When Ildiko came to me with the script, she told me these two people act really awkwardly in life, and she would like to show how it works with the animal scenes,” Horkai said. “And it worked... although their relationship was built more on trust than love.” Horkai, who specialises in studying and training wolves, used two wolves on leashes to herd the deer from a distance. Indonesia seizes luxury yacht linked to 1MDB probe
JAKARTA - Indonesia on Wednesday seized a luxury yacht on the island of Bali sought by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) as part of a multi-billion dollar corruption investigation linked to Malaysian state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). “We have been inspecting the crew since yesterday and now we are taking action, since we have received approval from the court,” Agung Setya, director of economic and special crimes at Indonesia’s criminal investigation bureau, told Metro TV. Television broadcast images of Indonesian officials talking to the crew on board the yacht, the Equanimity, which was moored at Benoa Bay. There were 34 crew on board, said Setya, adding that Indonesian authorities had worked with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investiga-
tion on the money laundering case, although he could not say how the investigation would proceed. “We will see how this develops... Whether we can do a joint investigation later or whether we can hand it over later, we are in the process of collecting and investigating.” 1MDB is at the centre of moneylaundering probes in at least six countries, including the United States, Switzerland and Singapore. A total of $4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB by high-level officials of the fund and
their associates, according to civil lawsuits filed by the DOJ in the past two years. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak set up 1MDB in 2009 and previously served as chairman of its advisory board. He and the fund have denied any wrongdoing. In August 2017, the DOJ asked for a stay on its civil lawsuits seeking to seize more than $1.7 billion in assets allegedly bought with stolen 1MDB funds because it was conducting a related criminal probe. Among the assets sought were a $250 million luxury yacht bought by Malaysian financier Jho Low, named as a key figure in the U.S. lawsuits. The lawsuits said Low used proceeds diverted from 1MDB to procure Equanimity, which it de-
scribed as a 300-foot (91-m) yacht registered in the Cayman Islands. The vessel has an interior clad in marble and gold leaf, a spa and sauna, a 20-metre (66-ft) swimming pool on deck, a movie theatre, a lift and a helipad, says a website on luxury charters, yachtcharterfleet.com. Low’s whereabouts are unknown and his Hong Kong company has not responded to requests for comment. In an emailed statement through his representative in June last year, Low said the DOJ’s actions were an example “of global overreach in pursuit of a deeply flawed case”. Other assets allegedly bought by Low with stolen 1MDB funds include a private jet, a hotel and real estate in New York, and a $107-million interest in EMI Music Publishing.
Some assets have been returned. Australian model and actress Miranda Kerr handed over millions of dollars worth of jewellery that U.S. authorities say was given to her by Low, including a jewelry set gifted to her during a 2014 excursion on Equanimity. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio also returned to authorities an Oscar once owned by actor Marlon Brando and other items the United States says were funded with 1MDB money.
