‘Spotlight’ takes top Academy Award, #OscarsSoWhite other big winner

In a ceremony where no single movie commanded attention, Mexico’s Alejandro Inarritu nabbed the best directing Oscar for “The Revenant”, becoming the first filmmaker in more than 60 years to win backto-back Academy Awards. Denpasar - Issues related to online application-based transportation services arose during the Governor of Bali’s open house, that took place at the Wantilan Hall of the Bali Parliamentary Building on Saturday (Feb. 27). At first, Chief of the Rental Transport Association, Nengah Wirayasa, objected to the suspension of GrabCar’s operations. This online application-based transport service from Malaysia not only benefits rental vehicle drivers like him, he said, but also contributes to the development of the rental vehicle business in general in terms of reasonable profit sharing. “So, we hope that the Governor and Deputy Governor will allow us to continue working with the GrabCar online application as it allows us to earn money to support our families. If we have engaged in some practice that has adverse effects, we are ready to discuss the matter to see how we can fix it” said Wirayasa.

Margariet sentenced to life`s imprisonment for murder

DENPASAR - The Depasar district of Bali sentenced Margariet Megawe to lifes imprisonment for murdering her six year old adopted child, Engeline. “The suspect was found guilty of premeditated murder, abusing and discriminating against child,” the presiding judge Edward Harris Sinaga said here on Monday. The sentenced was the same as demanded earlier by the team of public prosecutors. Margariets lawyer Hotma Sitompul said the

convict would appeal the verdict. The tragic death of Engeline in May last year, has attracted nation wide attention and caused public

condemnation of the suspect. The prosecutor said in the indictment Margariet beat Engeline causing the two ears of the child to bleed on May 15 last year. The angry suspect then rammed the head of Engeline to the concrete wall of her room. On May 16, Margariet hit Engeline again with her bare hand rammed her head to the wall and

then grabbing the hair of Engeline forcefully throwing her to the floor where she laid dead in front of Agustay , a man servant of the suspect. The body of Engeline was later found buried in the backyard of Margariets house. Enegline was adopted by Margariets late husband, who, witnessed said, bequeathed part of his assets to Engeline.(ant)

At that time, it was decided that GrabCar would be approved to operate because it works with drivers who have legal vehicles that are registered with the Transportation Agency. In a shack located away in the hills lives Wayan Adi Suryana with his wife Ariani, 24, and three children Luh Putu Pradnyadewi, 5, Ni Kadek Ayu Asti, 2.5, and Komang Aditya Wiguna of six months old. At this location, Regent Suwirta saw firsthand the malnourished condition of Kadek Ayu Asti. Her condition was first known in September 2015. At that time, the weight Kadek Asti aged 35 months was only 8.5 kilograms. With such low weight, it is known if Kadek Asti is malnourished. To prevent her from severe

health condition, the Klungkung Social Service provides her milk and supplementary food in the form of regal bread and vitamins. However, the assistance for one-month ration is given once in six months. Moreover, this cannot be received by the family continuously. This condition made Regent Suwirta sad where at that time he immediately held Kadek Asti. Admittedly, the limited assistance happens due to budget restriction. However, it does not mean that his government will keep silent. At that moment, Regent Suwirta allocated funds to cover the needs of food and dairy for the three children of Adi Suryana. “Condition of Kadek Asti has improved but I will provide assistance for the three children so as no longer become malnourished,” said Suwirta

accompanied by the officials of Klungkung district. Wayan Ariani, the mother of three children, said that other than the second child, her first child Putu Pradnyadewi was also malnourished when she was three years old. When asked what caused their children to be malnourished, she confessed that is somewhat difficult to get decent side dishes due to such economic condition. Her husband working as a construction laborer has not been able to provide a decent meal for her three children. According to her, tofu has become a tasty side dish for her family. Such condition also often makes all the children difficult to eat. For protein need, Wayan Ariani claimed they can consume meat when her husband hunts monkeys or ferrets. The existence of monkeys in Bukit Abah is deemed to be a blessing to her family. “It’s difficult to get a side dish because to buy the dishes we have to walk far and pass steep terrain,” she said innocently. This time the three children are under observation of the government of Klungkung through the nearest health center. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Ga-

lungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious

celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood

and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes

of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Minister of Tourism encourages investors to create hotel equity in Bali

JAKARTA — Because Bali is known as a major destination for foreign travelers, the Ministry of Tourism will focus on embracing investors who can facilitate the equitable distribution of hotels on the island. “Bali has an average occupancy rate of 50 percent. So, if it increases by 20 percent, then the total occupancy rate will be 70 percent. It is still possible to increase the occupancy rate of hotels in Bali- even by 50 percent” said Minister Arief Yahya, in Jakarta on Sunday.

Minister Arief therefore confirmed that Bali will continue to be promoted with great design, so as to obtain a larger number of foreign visitors. “In parallel, we will soon be working on north, east and west Bali because these areas can still be further developed” said Arief. The Ministry of Tourism plans to attract tourism industry players into the ‘non-southern’ parts of Bali so that there can be a more even distribution of tourism on the island. Presently the southern region of Bali is crowded with hotels whereas

the other regions are not. According to the Secretary General of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), Ratna Soebrata, there data shows that Bali has 1,300 hotel rooms all but that 70 percent of them are located in soth Bali. South Bali , particularly in Kuta and Sanur. “A more equal distribution of accommodations is required, the north and east of Bali still need investors to establish hotels. Musk’s SpaceX rocket launch canceled at final countdown CAPE CANAVERAL - At the last second, Elon Musk’s SpaceX scrubbed plans to launch a Falcon 9 rocket on Sunday, again delaying an attempt to put an satellite into orbit and then land the vehicle’s first stage intact on a sea platform, a step that may eventually slash costs. The 23-story rocket, carrying a communications satellite for Luxembourg-based SES SA, was less than two minutes from blast-off at 6:47 p.m. (1147 GMT) when the launch team aborted the countdown, SpaceX said during a webcast. It was the third time that the company postponed the launch of the satellite. Musk, founder and chief executive of SpaceX, said that Air Force safety officers stopped the countdown after a boat strayed into a restricted zone east of SpaceX’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station launch site. “Scrambling (helicopter) to get them to move,” Musk posted on Twitter. SpaceX resumed the countdown a few minutes later, aiming for a 7:21 p.m. (0121 GMT) launch, but a technical issue automatically stopped the liftoff again, just a second before the planned launch.

“Launch aborted on low thrust alarm. Rising oxygen temps due to hold for boat and helium bubble triggered alarm,” Musk posted on Twitter after the countdown stopped the second time. He said the launch team was reviewing data and would provide an update afterwards. SpaceX, based in Hawthorne, California, did not immediately say when it would make its next attempt to launch the rocket. It would be no earlier than Tuesday, the Air Force said in a statement. The company is aiming to bring the main stage of its rockets back to Earth so that it can refurbish and reuse them, something that would make launches much more cost-effective. SpaceX has already succeeded in landing a Falcon rocket on an on-shore site near the Cape Canaveral pad where it launched, but it has failed in three previous attempts to guide rockets back to ocean platforms. It had called off two attempts to launch the rocket last week due to a technical issue with loading super-cold liquid oxygen propellant aboard the rocket. China to launch second space lab in Q3 - state media BEIJING - China will put a second space laboratory in orbit in the third quarter of this year, state news agency Xinhua said on Sunday, part of the country’s plan to have a permanent manned space station in service around 2022. Advancing China’s space programme is a priority for Beijing, with President Xi Jinping calling for the country to establish itself as a space power. Tiangong (Heavenly Palace) 2 is expected to be docked with a cargo ship, Tianzhou 1 (Heavenly Vessel) which is scheduled to be launched in the first half of next year, Xinhua said. China also plans to launch Shenzhou 11 spacecraft, which will carry two as-

tronauts on board, in the fourth quarter of this year to dock with Tiangong 2, the Xinhua report said. Xinhua, citing an unnamed spokesperson for the space programme, said China was expected to complete by 2020 an orbiting space station, to consist of a core module and two attached laboratories. The first space lab, Tiangong 1, was launched in 2011, and has been working well, said Xinhua. KARANGASEM - For many years the traditional village of Muntigunung has been known as a shantytown. This image is hard to change because the issue of poverty in the area has yet to be resolved. According to the Regent of Karangasem , his regency has 20 tourism villages and Muntigunung has garnered particular attention. Few people are aware of the great tourism potential that Muntigungung actually has. Last Friday (Feb 26), Head of Muntigunung’s Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis), Made Regeg, said that he does not deny that Muntigunung is known for being very run down, but he added that Mutigungung has a lot of cultural and natural value that could be developed so as to make this village a great tourist destination. Regeg emphasized that Muntigungung is also known as “mountain country” and is complete with many backwoods trekking paths that pass through the village and that are already popular with tourists. Not only that, there is also a nature spring in the village. “People here refer to the spring as a connector of rice planting because without this spring, we could not live. We live from this spring” he said. Apart form using the water for drinking and irrigating their fields, the water from this spring is also used as holy water and in purification ceremonies. Crowded by visitors, Shiva statue area has no janitors

NEGARA - After a few months of having been completed, the area of the Shiva statue located in front of Gilimanuk Harbor has started to be thronged with local visitors, including people from East Java, who come on weekends and holidays specifically to enjoy this site. Despite the large number of people who come to enjoy the space, the local government has yet to assign janitors to this location. Gilimanuk’s Zona Bahari supervisory community group (Pokmaswas) have been temporarily maintaining the area, but are becoming overwhelmed by the large number of visitors and the volume of garbage that results from their visits. Unfortunately, despite there being many trash cans in place, many visitors remain unaware that there is a problem with littering and so they throw their food wrappers away carelessly. Chief of Pokmaswas Zona Bahari, Selamet, said that recently the Shiva status has been quite crowded with visitors from Jembrana, Singaraja and East Java in particular and so, out of concern for the condition of the area, Pakmaswas took the initiative of cleaning up the location and even bought a lawnmower to keep the

area around the statue tidy. The local government contributes to the cutting of the grass by providing ten litters of fuel for the lawnmower. Pokmaswas hopes that the local government will provide them with more support before assigning janitors to the statue area. Aside from rubbish, another problem they are facing is motorcycles entering the area. Motorcycles are in fact prohibited from entering the the paving block pathway around the Shiva statue. “We have proposed to that warning signs or a security gate be put up immediately to prevent motorcyclists from entering. We often try to warn people ourselves, but they usually insist on entering” said Secretary of the Pokmaswas, 45 year old Budi Rohmansyah, recently. Head of the Jembrana Environment, Sanitation and Landscaping Agency, I Wayan Darwin, said on Sunday (Feb. 28) that currently no janitors have been placed in the area because the maintenance period of the contractor is still running. It is important that the villagers get involved in developing the potential of the natural environment and their culture, explained Purna. “Everyone needs to get involved in developing the charm of the village. The Tourism Awareness Group has already been formed and now they are being supported” he said. Mahathir quits Malaysia’s ruling UMNO party, protesting corruption

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s former premier Mahathir Mohamad said on Monday he is quitting the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) party, as it is being seen as “supporting corruption” under Prime Minister Najib Razak’s leadership.

Mahathir, Malaysia’s longest-serving leader, remains a highly respected and influential figure and has become the fiercest critic of Najib, who is facing pressure over a graft scandal surrounding state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). “I won’t call it UMNO anymore, this is Najib’s party,” Mahathir told reports at a press conference. “I feel embarrassed that I am associated with a party that is seen as supporting corruption - it had caused me to feel ashamed.” Najib’s office had no immediate comment on Mahathir’s statement. The 90-year-old Mahathir, premier from 1981 to 2003, said he would not set up a new party or join another party. “I am trying to make sure that Najib will not continue to be the PM of this country,” he said. Philippines asks China to respect sea dispute arbitration

MANILA - The Philippines on Monday urged China to respect a forthcoming ruling by an arbitration court in The Hague on a territorial dispute in the South China Sea after Beijing accused Manila of “political provocation”. China claims almost the entire South China Sea, believed to have huge deposits of oil and gas. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims on the waters, through which about $5 trillion in trade is shipped every year. China refuses to recognise the case lodged by the Philippines with the tribunal and says all disputes should be resolved through bilateral talks. “The Philippines, as well as the international community, is asking China to respect the forthcoming ruling of the arbitral tribunal and together advance an international rules-based regime,” Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said in a statement in Manila. “If China does not heed our collective call, does it mean that China considers itself above the law?” The tribunal’s ruling was expected before May, said del Rosario. Manila and Beijing had met several times to

discuss maritime disputes but nothing had been resolved, he added. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei repeated on Monday that China would not participate in the case. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on a visit to the United States last week, accused the Philippines of “political provocation” in seeking arbitration to resolve the dispute. Wang held talks last week with his counterpart, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who said China was rapidly militarising the waterway after building artificial islands and deploying fighters and missiles. Wang defended China’s actions as self-defence but said it would remain open for two-way talks with countries claiming the South China Sea. The Philippines and Japan, which has its own territorial dispute with China in the East China Sea, on Monday signed a military agreement allowing the transfer of aircraft and equipment to the Philippines. BEIJING — China’s premier told visiting U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew on Monday his government is pressing ahead with painful reforms to shrink bloated coal and steel industries that are a drag on its slowing economy and ruled out devaluing its currency as a short-cut to boosting exports. Premier Li Keqiang’s comments to Lew on Monday were in line with a joint declaration by financial officials from the Group of 20 biggest rich and developing economies who met over the weekend in Shanghai. They pledged to avoid devaluations to boost sagging trade and urged governments to speed up reforms to boost slowing global growth. Beijing is under pressure to reassure global financial markets it has its economy under control following stock and currency turmoil. The G20 finance officials’ declaration that global growth was still on track despite signs it may be slowing again appeared to fall flat: share prices fell in most Asian markets Monday, with the Shanghai benchmark dropping as much as 4.4 percent to close down 2.9 percent at 2,687.98. Li told Lew that China is moving ahead with a long-range plan to squeeze excess production capacity out of industries where supply exceeds demand, according to a deputy Chinese finance minister, Zhu Guangyao. He said regulators would focus first on steel and coal, huge industries with millions of workers. NEW DELHI — India pledged Monday to invest billions of dollars to improve the lives of farmers and boost the rural economy, drive consumer demand and stimulate growth. Finance Minister Arun Jaitely proposed spending nearly $13 billion on rural development, promising higher incomes for farmers who form the majority of India’s 1.2 billion people. Presenting the annual budget for 2016-17, he forecast that India would grow by 7.6 percent in the year ending March 2016. The government intends to distribute the benefits of growth among the poorer sections of society, including the vast majority of India’s farmers, he said. “We plan to double farmers’ income in five years,” Jaitely said. He outlined what he called the government’s “nine pillars” of a “transformative agenda” for the economy. They include a slew of measures

to boost education, increase spending on roads, irrigation and other infrastructure, intensify oversight of government spending and reform India’s complicated tax regime. The Indian economy is doing well despite slowing growth in other emerging and leading economies, Jaitely said. His reference to a recent observation by the International Monetary Fund that India was the one bright spot in the global outlook was vigorously applauded by fellow members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. “We inherited an economy of slow growth, high inflation and low faith in government ... amid global headwinds, the Indian economy has held its own,” he said. A resident that was bathing and washing in the dam built in 1982 during the Minister of Mrs. Nani Sudarsono said that in the dam lives small fish. On that account, said Gede Merti, occasionally there are people fishing in the dam area of approximately 0.5 hectare. Bed of the dam experiences sedimentation due to mud washed away by floods from the upstream area at Mount Seraya. Due to high sediment and the upper area containing clay, the dam water becomes turbid with color of mud. Since the water is turbid, no residents take advantage of it for consumption. When the dam is full, the water flows and empties out to Yehkali Beach at West Seraya. In dry season, the dam water recedes and even nearly dries up. At that time, in addition to bathing and washing, it is also used by residents to bathe their cattle. So, they shower together with cattle. Macedonian police fire tear gas on migrants storming Greek border

IDOMENI - Macedonian police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of migrants and refugees who stormed the border from Greece on Monday, tearing down a gate as frustrations boiled over at restrictions imposed on people moving through the Balkans. A Reuters witness said Macedonian police fired several rounds of tear gas into crowds who tore down the metal gate and onto a railway line where migrants sat refusing to move, demanding to cross into the country. There were an estimated 8,000 people gathered at Idomeni, the small frontier community on Greece’s border with Macedonia. Most were Syrians and Iraqis. Earlier on Monday, a crush had developed along the frontier after rumours spread that Macedonian authorities had opened the border after several hours of it remaining sealed shut. Crowds who gathered at the razor wire fence proceeded to use a heavy metal pole to bring down a gate by digging beneath the barrier and using force to push it up and out. At least two people collapsed in the crush and ensuing use of tear gas, Reuters television images showed. At least 22,000 refugees and migrants have been stranded in Greece in the past week since border restrictions began along other countries in the Balkan corridor used by individuals to get to central and northern Europe. BANDA ACEH - Police have found in Aceh the largest hemp plantation ever known in Indonesia, police have said. The hemp plantations totaling more than 54 hectares were found on the Gunung Selawah hill foot, the Indonesia police spokesman Inspector General Police Anton Charliyan said. “This deserves appreciation. Aceh police have found the largest hemp plantations and a suspect was arrested,” Anton Charliyan said here on Saturday. Aceh has been known as the countrys largest supplier of marijuana which is made from dried leaves and flower of hemp plants. Aceh police chief Insp.Gen. Husein Hamidi said the 54 hectares

plantations were found in five locations. “Further investigation could find more hemp plantations in that area,” Husein Hamidi said. Police succeeded in arresting only one of suspected growers. “Apparently they had information that police would come. Information could be given by local villagers,” Husein said. Floods inundate 10 villages in Tangerang TANGERANG - Floods inundated thousands of houses in 10 villages in Tangerang District of Banten Province on Sunday. Head of Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency of Tangerang Teteng Jumara said here Sunday that the high intensity rain over the last two days had caused the local Cimanceuri River to overflow its banks and and sent floods to the region. Water reaching 40 until 80 cm has inundated ten villages in the region namely Gelam, Kadu Agung, Pasir Nangka, Cibadak, Jengkol, Gelam Jaya, Mekar Sari, Klebet, Pagedangan Ilir, and the Permata Housing. The villages spread to several subdistricts such as Tigarakasa, Kresek, Rajeg, Kemiri and Kronjo. “Residents whose houses are inundated have been evacuated to some secure locations such as religious buildings and schools,” Jumara said. Some villagers have also evacuated themselves to the houses of their relatives which are not affected by the floods. Local authority has established emergency tents and public kitchens to help the victims and some disaster mitigation posts in Tigaraksa, Pasar Kemis, Rajeg , Kronjo and Cikupa to monitor the disaster mitigation and coordination. Some logistics have been distributed to the victims such as rice, blankets, instant noodles, baby food, mineral water and biscuits.

Vonn shrugs off injury to extend World Cup lead

LONDON — A week after letting in five goals, Willy Caballero made three saves in a penalty shootout against Liverpool to help Manchester City win the League Cup on Sunday and claim its fifth major trophy since 2011. Though the Argentine goalkeeper is second-choice behind Joe Hart in the Premier League and the Champions League, he has been a regular in the cup teams fielded by coach Manuel Pellegrini. And Pellegrini’s faith in the 34year-old keeper was duly rewarded with a memorable display in the penalty shootout after the two sides had ground out a 1-1 draw after extra time at Wembley Stadium. Caballero stood firm during the shootout, opting not to second-guess which way the Liverpool players would send their penalties. His decision paid dividends as the spot-kicks of Lucas Leiva, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana were all saved and Yaya Toure went on score the final penalty to give City a 3-1 victory in the shootout.

“I watched a lot of penalties last night with Joe (Hart) and my goalkeeper coach,” Caballero said. “I tried to make good decisions and fortunately God helped me a lot because it was a really, really good night for me.” Pellegrini held firm to his decision to give Caballero a final berth despite calls by some City fans to catapult England’s number one, Hart, into the side to face Liverpool. “I prefer to lose the title than to lose my words,” Pellegrini said. Caballero’s compatriot, City defender Pablo Zabaleta, backed the decision. “He was the hero of the day,” he said. “It was one of those moments where I think Willy deserved to be in goal today because he’d been playing in this competition from the beginning and it was a great

way for him to finish today.” Pellegrini, who is in his final months at City following the club’s announcement earlier in February that Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola is to join in the summer, heaped praise on both his goalkeepers.
