Agence France-Presse VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI’s troubled papacy entered its ďŹ nal hours on Thursday before the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics will make history as the ďŹ rst pontiff to resign since the Middle Ages.
The 85-year-old stunned the globe when he announced on February 11 his surprise decision to step down, saying he no longer had the “strength of mind and body to carry on in a fast-changing world. “I took this step in full awareness of its gravity and novelty but with profound serenity, the pope told a crowd of 150,000 pilgrims in St Peter’s Square at an emotional farewell on Wednesday. 7R GR OLVW IRU WKH QHZ 3RSH - Sex Abuse: After sordid revelations of child abuse by priests erupted in Europe and the United States, Benedict apologised for the Church’s role in turning a blind eye and protecting abusers, but campaigners say not enough has been done to bring suspects before the law or to punish the senior prelates who covered up the abuse for decades.
- Vatican Finances: Plagued by a dark history of murky ďŹ nancial dealings, the Vatican has promised to step up efforts against money laundering and wants to be on a White List of countries that comply with international rules. The head of the bank was unceremoniously sacked in May last year under a cloud of intrigue and his successor was only named this month.
- Homosexuality and Gay Marriage: This is one of the Vatican’s most critical issues. While condemning violence against homosexuals, Benedict has refused to be shaken on the Church’s teachings on the traditional family of father, mother and child, and intervened directly in recent heated debates in France and Britain on same-sex marriage.
- Curia, Secrets, and Intrigue: Absorbed by his studies, the academic Benedict has failed to put his stamp on the Curia, the Church’s secretive and powerful governing body. Dominated by Italian clerics, the Curia is key to a papacy because it can intervene in unfavoured papal decisions and uphold the status quo.
- Ordination of women and Priest celibacy: Calls from self-proclaimed disobedient priests and campaigners to end priestly celibacy, and accept women into the clergy to fill positions left empty as priest numbers dwindle, were denounced by Benedict last year as self-serving.
- Abortion and Euthanasia: Benedict has insisted on the Vatican’s “duty to defend “basic human values by refusing to counter abortion or euthanasia, describing attempts to “select people and exclude others from humanity as utterly immoral.

Bali News Animate creativity of young generation NYEPI or Day of Silence celebration today has been synonymous with the ogoh-ogoh or papier mâchÊ demon parade. It happens because in every celebration, the ogoh-ogoh always gets special attention, both from the community, including government and security forces. Actually, behind it the Nyepi celebration has a profound meaning in relation to the implementation of religious values to create a peace. Nevertheless, it is undeniable if the ogoh-ogoh parade has become very synonymous with the Nyepi celebration. The making of ogoh-ogoh spends H[SHQVLYH FRVW VWDUWLQJ IURP ¿YH PLOOLRQ to tens of millions of rupiahs. Buruan hamlet, Buruan village, Blahbatuh, for instance, spent IDR 15 million. Similar budget was also spent by Bedulu, where the making of its ogoh-ogoh needed a budget of IDR 12 million. Such budget was obtained from the cash of local youth club and donation of some donors. It included the expenses of consumption for the youths working to make the ogoh-ogoh, said one of young men at Margabingung, hamlet, Bedulu village, Blahbatuh, Dewa Gede Suartika. Most materials of the ogoh-ogoh used cork. Meanwhile, the tradition of splitting bamboo slices began to shift. It was one of the causes making the production costs of making the ogohogoh more expensive. For one cubic of cork (approximately 2.5 m x 1 m) was worth IDR 475,000. In the meantime, the making of ogoh-ogoh could spend at least three cubic of cork. Though using cork was more expensive, the making process of the ogoh-ogoh ultimately turned easier. The block-sized cork just needed to be shaped as the anatomy required. Having
been shaped accordingly, it was then wrapped in paper and resumed with the process of painting. Ogoh-ogoh paraded in the celebration of Nyepi was the creative work of the youth. They made it very neatly and tidily. Sometimes, the ogoh-ogoh made ZDV QRW VHW RQ ÂżUH DIWHU EHLQJ SDUDGHG on the Pengerupukan. Such expensive ogoh-ogoh was also in demand by tourism industry to be used as a display at hotel, restaurant and so on. Meanwhile, implementation of the ogoh-ogoh parade in Gianyar County was entrusted to customary village. It had become the decision in the preparation meeting for the celebration of Nyepi held by Gianyar County. 7KH DFWLQJ ÂżUVW DVVLVWDQW WR 5HJLRQDO Secretary of Gianyar, Cokorda Rai Pemayun, said the ogoh-ogoh parade was still allowed to the public, provided that the execution was under the liability of each customary village. The making of ogoh-ogoh was encouraged to emphasize the artistic elements without insertion of political attributes and social organizations. Besides, the bearers were appealed to put on Balinese customary attires and keep the orderliness. (dar)

Stubborn street hawkers dismantled at Gilimanuk Negara (Bali Post)—
A few stalls of street hawkers in front of Gilimanuk Market stubbornly violating the agreement were eventually dismantled by the Jembrana public order ofďŹ cer on Wednesday (Feb 27). The demolition was forced to be done because those street hawkers ignored the warning and guidance provided by the Jembrana Industry, Trade and Cooperative Agency. As per the agreement made with the other traders at Gilimanuk Market, the installation of tents for fruit traders was only allowed to sell fruits and did not expand the tent. But in reality, the stamped agreement was violated by expanding the tent and sold merchandise other than fruits. Such an action kindled a protest from the other traders whose sight was impeded by the expanded tent. Village authority and the Industry, Trade and Cooperative Agency had come down for several times and provided reprimands but the traders ignored them. “A few traders are still stubborn and they are eventually dismantled,â€? said a trader. The Head of Industry, Trade and Cooperative Agency, Ni Made Ayu Ardini, came down to
location on Tuesday (Feb 26) to provide guidance and asked to dismantle the expanded tent. Unluckily, it was not obeyed, so that the public order ofďŹ cer together with the Gilimanuk village authority took action and dismantled them by moving the merchandise to outside the tent, Wednesday (Feb 27). The merchandise belonging to the street hawkers was subsequently placed behind the tent. Besides, those hawkers were also reminded not to expand their tent again. Otherwise, the ofďŹ cers would take similar decisive action. (kmb26) 7KH RIÂżFHUV FRQÂżFDWHG WKH equipments used by the hawkHUV LQ *LOLPDQXN 0DUNHW IBP/File

The strong wind hitting Bali have been complained by the ďŹ shermen of Tabanan shores. Due to the high wave they couldn’t go to the sea. To ďŹ ll in their holidays, they choose to ďŹ x their boats as seen on the shores of Yeh Gangga Beach, Desa Sudimara, Tabanan last Wednesday (27/2). The mass holiday goes on for three days already as waves reached around 10 feet or 3 meters every time. “If it’s

Wayan Lupa (50) a ďŹ sherman stated. What’s worse that the wind brought the waves up to the shores causing ďŹ shermen evacuated all their equipments far from it. MANGUPURA - One of the local farm products, namely Bali beef, remains to get very low absorption in the Bali tourism sector, especially hotels and restaurants. Conversely, many Bali cattle are sold to outside Bali, even reaching 60,000-80,000 heads per year. “We hope that tourism businesspeople in Bali prefer to use local beef for hotel sector so that only few Bali cattle will be sold to outside the island, said Production Division Head of Bali Livestock and Animal Health Agency, Mardiana, in the Tuesday discussion entitled Tourism Impact on Macro and Creative Economy with Anak Agung Ngurah Puspayoga held by the Indonesia Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) Bali in Kuta. Mardiana hoped that in the future at least 40 percent of beef for hotel sector in Bali could use local products. “In Bali, there are 7,000 cattle breeder groups. If Bali beef can be absorbed in larger number by tourism sector, it will surely increase the welfare of breeders, he said. Further, he said that Temesi slaughter house had not been used optimally because the beef absorption from hotel sector, including the export of Bali beef was still very low. Bali cattle for slaughter house in Bali reached 43,000 heads a year. Unfortunately, the cattle quota prepared for local slaughter house was still numerously left. Meanwhile, Deputy Governor of Bali, AA Ngurah Puspayoga, said that to increase the absorption of Bali beef in the local market was required a synergy between farming and tourism sector. Puspayoga added that in the future should be made a bylaw in order the Bali hotel sector could use Bali beef in larger number. Currently, the hotel sector only used about 10 percent of the local agricultural and livestock products. At least, there would be an increase in the future in the utilization of local beef yield from 10 percent to 40 percent. According to Puspayoga, Bali cattle had advantages such as they were given natural fodder like grass, while the Kube Wagyu cattle was tender as did not move and often given a massage. “Bali cattle are certainly healthy as they are given natural food and actively moving. DENPASAR - The Head of the Gubernatorial Election Candidacy Working Group, Regional Electoral Commission (KPU) Bali, Ni Putu Ayu Winariarti, said the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) via the Regional Electoral Commission asked the governor and deputy governor candidates contesting in the Bali Gubernatorial Election 2013 to immediately submit their wealth list. “The KPK has requested through the KPU Bali in order the candidates immediately report their wealth. To that end, we ask the candidates to immediately report to their wealth to KPK, said Winariarti accompanied by Chairman of the KPU Bali Ketut Sukawati Lanang Putra Perbawa and a member Dewa Kade Raka Wiarsa Sandi, amidst the presentation of the verification results of the candidacy document at the office of the Regional Electoral Commission, Wednesday (Feb 27). Further, he said the conferment of wealth list was also to meet the candidacy requirements. Each candidate should immediately submit a list of their assets directly to the Commission. Afterward, the receipt of wealth report to the KPK was submitted to Regional Electoral Commission. Then, when
will it be announced? Winariarti claimed to have not scheduled it. Moreover, it was entirely the authority of the KPK. “Submission of the wealth list has not been made by all the candidates. So, we will wait for it, she said. Related to the announcement of wealth list, he said, the Commission had made coordination with the KPK and candidates. If the KPK had time, the KPU was planning the making of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the KPK and the candidates. “We will attempt to do this prior to campaign schedule. Thus, at that time can also be announced the wealth list of the candidates, said Winariarti. In the conferment of verification document was revealed, the wealth list to the KPK had just been submitted by the pair of Made Mangku Pastika-Ketut Sudikerta (Pasti-
Kerta). Meanwhile, the package of AAN Puspayoga–Dewa Sukrawan (PAS) and Gede Winasa-Putu Sudiartana (Widi) were reported to have not submitted their wealth list. Wayan Sutena, the PAS Campaign Deputy Team Leader confirmed the candidate supported by the PDI-P had not yet reported their wealth list to the KPK. “We have enough time and are still preparing a few other documents required, said Sutena doubling as Deputy Chairman of the PDI-P Bali. A similar recognition was revealed by the Widi Campaign Team Leader, Wayan Sumardika. He did not deny if the Widi package had not submitted the wealth report to the KPK. “We make sure that all the files required will be met in the remaining time, including the wealth report to the KPK, he explained. One of the local farm products, namely Bali beef, remains to get very low absorption in the Bali tourism sector, especially hotels and restaurants. Conversely, many Bali cattle are sold to outside Bali, even reaching 60,000-80,000 heads per year.

Knicks overcome Curry’s 54 to beat Warriors Associated Press Writer
New York Knicks’ Tyson Chandler, top, shoots over Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson GXULQJ WKH ¿UVW KDOI of an NBA basketball game on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, in New York.
NEW YORK — The New York Knicks overcame Golden State guard Stephen Curry’s NBA season-high 54 points to beat the Warriors 109-105 on Wednesday. Carmelo Anthony scored 35 points and J.R. Smith hit the tiebreaking shot with 1:10 left to help give the Knicks the win.
Curry was 18 of 28 from the field, finishing one short of the NBA record with 11 3-pointers. It was the most points by an NBA player in a loss since Kobe Bryant had 58 in a loss to Charlotte on Dec. 29, 2006 Curry finished with seven assists and six rebounds while passing his previous career-best of 42 points, and Kevin Durant’s 52-point performance that had been the best in the NBA this season. But he had little help without All-Star forward David Lee, who was suspended one game for his role in an altercation Tuesday night in Indiana. Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook scored 29 points and Kevin Durant recorded his third career triple-double as the Thunder finished a perfect three-game homestand by routing the short-handed New Orleans Hornets 119-74. Durant had 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as Oklahoma City finished a dominant four-game sweep of the season series against New
Orleans, which was without starters Anthony Davis (shoulder) and Eric Gordon (knee). The Thunder led by at least 29 in three of the four meetings this season, At San Antonio, Jermaine O’Neal had 22 points and 13 rebounds, and Wesley Johnson hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime as the Phoenix Suns beat San Antonio 105-101 to end the Spurs’ 18-game home winning streak. Luis Scola added 15 points and Goran Dragic had 13 points and 13 assists for Phoenix, which ended a six-game losing streak against San Antonio. Zach Randolph scored 22 points and Marc Gasol added 21 at Memphis as the Grizzlies matched their largest comeback in franchise history, rallying to beat the Dallas Mavericks 90-84. Quincy Pondexter finished with 12 and Austin Daye added 10, all in the first half, for Memphis, which trailed by 25 points in the second quarter but stormed back to win its eighth straight. Gasol had 12 rebounds and Randolph 10 as Memphis outrebounded Dallas 46-34.
Chinese team joins 2014 Formula E championship Associated Press Writer
PARIS — Team China Racing is the second team to sign up for next year’s environmentally friendly Formula E championship, which will feature zero-emission cars racing in 10 cities around the world. China Racing was officially proposed to motor sport’s governing body as one of the 10 teams taking part. British-based Drayson Racing was the first team to sign up, while Rio de Janeiro and Rome are the first two cities to commit to hosting a race. “The Formula E championship with single-seater cars is a FIA championship of the future. The future is not so far away,” FIA president Jean Todt said during a presentation in Paris on Wednesday. “In a few days we
will have the opportunity of presenting the calendar, and I am sure we will have some nice surprises.” The championship, scheduled to begin in May 2014, features cars powered exclusively by electricity. Races will be held in the streets of major cities over a distance of about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles), and cars will travel at a maximum speed of 220 kph (135 mph). “It is very rewarding for the FIA and for myself as president to see all the attraction it is creating, at the level of the cities, the teams, the competitors, the drivers,” Todt said at the FIA’s Paris headquarters. “I would say all the ingredients are there to prepare a very strong championship. Times are changing, and it is very important for the FIA to have a vision of the future ... electric cars in cities.”

Obama warns cuts to hit US, global economy Agence France-Presse
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama warned Wednesday the US economy would take a “big hit” and other countries would also suffer when harsh automatic spending cuts come into force within 48 hours. Obama invited congressional leaders to the White House on Friday -- the day the $85 billion in cuts begin, as he renewed his warnings to Republicans that a deal to avert the so-called sequester must include new tax revenue. “This is going to be a big hit on the economy, both the private sector, as well as the public sector -- economists are estimating we could lose as much as six tenths of a point, maybe a little bit more, of economic growth,” the president said. “The worst part of it is, it is entirely unnecessary. It is not what we should be doing,” the president told the Business Council, a body grouping CEOs of big US firms. “If you look right now at what our economy needs, taking $85 billion out of it over the next six months, indiscriminately, arbitrarily, without a strategy behind it -- that is not a smart thing to do.” Obama also warned the cuts
would make the global economy “weaker” because the United States was currently doing “significantly better” than some other major industrialized nations. For the White House talks, the president summoned Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Democratic boss Nancy Pelosi. Some Republicans privately complained that the fact that the meeting was called for the day the cuts come into force meant the White House was not serious about stopping the sequester. “The meeting Friday is an opportunity for us to visit with the president about how we can all keep our commitment to reduce Washington spending,” said McConnell. “We can either secure those reductions more intelligently, or we can do it the President’s way with across-the board cuts,” he said, reiterating the Republican
refusal raise new revenues by closing tax loopholes. Wrangling between Obama and Republicans on an alternative way to trim the deficit has stalled attempts to subvert the sequester. The painful, automatic budget cuts were envisioned as a mechanism to defuse a previous spending showdown by forcing both sides into a deal to cut the deficit, but Washington is so dysfunctional that no agreement has been reached. Republicans blame Obama for the sequester, saying it was his idea, though the White House points out that Republicans in the House and Senate voted for the measure before the president signed it into law. The White House has warned of a “perfect storm” of widespread furloughs, nationwide airport delays and weaker US border security. It says US military readiness will be hurt and public and emergency services curtailed.
SHANGHAI - The performance of US firms in China worsened in 2012 for the second year in a row, hurt by a slowdown in the economy and a more challenging regulatory environment, a business group said Thursday. The American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai said fewer of its member companies reported being profitable or increasing revenue in an annual survey of China’s business climate. “US managers should no longer expect China’s economy to grow at the same double-digit rates of years past,” said the China Business Report 20122013, which surveyed more than 400 of the chamber’s members. “The ‘new normal’ for US companies in China will be characterised by a maturing economy that is likely to generate weaker growth returns and rising business challenges,” it said. Challenges included surging costs for labour and taxes, finding and retaining employees, growing competition and murky government policies, the group said. For 2012, 71 percent of companies responding to the survey reported rising revenue, less than the 80 percent the previous year. And 73 percent of companies said they were profitable last year, down from 78 percent in 2011. The Chinese economy -- the world’s
second-largest -- expanded just 7.8 percent in 2012, its slowest pace in 13 years, in the face of weakness at home and in key overseas markets. That helped foreign direct investment in China to fall for the first time in three years, declining to $111.72 billion from an all-time high of $116 billion in 2011. Still, China remained a “vital market” for US companies, the chamber said, with nearly two-thirds of firms saying revenue growth in China was greater than their global figure. Chinese government policies, which lack transparency and tend to favour domestic companies, were a hindrance and more than two-thirds of firms surveyed said the regulatory environment had not improved or even deteriorated last year. “It is incumbent upon China to address the more fundamental regulatory and policy issues,” the chamber said. “These include a lack of transparency, a tangled web of bureaucracy and other regulatory challenges.” In a case that shook the foreign business community in China, US equipment giant Caterpillar said last month it would take a $580 million charge after uncovering “accounting misconduct” at a newly acquired Chinese firm. Analysts said the stumble by a Chinese market veteran served as a reminder of the pitfalls of doing business in the hugely promising market.

Japan PM Abe cites Thatcher UHâ€ŤŰŒâ€ŹHFWLRQV RQ )DONODQGV ZDU Reuters
TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whose country is embroiled in a row with China over tiny islands, on Thursday quoted former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s reections on the 1982 Falklands war with Argentina to stress the importance of the rule of law at sea. “Our national interests have been immutable. They lie in making the seas, which are the foundation of our nation’s existence, completely open, free and peaceful,â€? Abe said in a wide-ranging policy speech to parliament in which he also urged Japan to seek to become “No.1â€? as an economic power. Abe went on to quote a remark from Thatcher’s memoirs, reecting on the Falklands war, in which she said Britain was defending the fundamental principle that international law should prevail over the use of force. The war over the remote South Atlantic archipelago began when Argentine troops landed on the Falkland islands on April 2, 1982, and ended 74 days later with their surrender. The conict killed about 650 Argentine and 255 British troops. Continuing in his own words, Abe said: “The rule of law at sea. I want to appeal to international society that in modern times changes to the status quo by the use of force will justify nothing.â€? A are-up in tensions in the territorial row has raised fears of an unintended military incident near the islands, known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China. The United States says the islets fall under a U.S.-Japan security pact, but Washington is keen to avoid a clash in the economically vital region. JAPAN JETS SCRAMBLE
Japanese ďŹ ghter jets scrambled again on Thursday after a Chinese twin-engine turboprop Y-12 aircraft came within about 100 km (62 miles) of what Tokyo considers its airspace over the islands, the defence ministry said. Three Chinese patrol ships briey entered the disputed waters, the Japan Coast Guard said. The hawkish Abe, who took ofďŹ ce in December after his conservative party’s big election win, reiterated in his speech that the islands are Japanese territory, and urged Beijing not to escalate tensions. He added, however, that Sino-Japanese relations were vital for Japan and said his door was always open to dialogue.
Bangladesh sentences Thailand agrees to talks with southern Muslim rebels Islamist leader to death for war crimes Reuters
Reuters
DHAKA - A Bangladesh war crimes tribunal sentenced an Islamist party leader to death on Thursday, the third verdict by the court set up to investigate abuses during the country’s independence war. Delwar Hossain Sayedee, 73, vice-president of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, was found guilty of charges of mass killing, rape, arson, looting and forcing minority Hindus to convert to Islam during the 1971 independence war, lawyers and tribunal ofďŹ cials said. The religious party, known as Jamaat, called for a daylong countrywide strike in anticipation of the verdict against Sayedee, the third senior party member convicted by the tribunal. The strike call was largely ignored. “The verdict has appropriately demonstrated justice. We are happy,â€? state prosecutor Haider Ali told reporters. Jamaat ofďŹ cials were not immediately available for comment. They condemned the two earlier convictions. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina set up the tribunal in 2010 to investigate abuses during the independence war that claimed about 3 million lives and during which thousands of women were raped. The tribunal has been criticized by rights groups for failing to adhere to international standards of due process. Human Rights Watch cited defense lawyers, witnesses and investigators as saying they had been threatened. Critics say the tribunal is being used by the prime minister as an instrument against her opponents in the two biggest opposition parties, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Jamaat-e-Islami. Begum Khaleda Zia, Hasina’s arch rival and leader of the BNP, has called the tribunal a “farceâ€?. Hasina’s party has denied allegations of bias.
KUALA LUMPUR - Thailand’s government agreed on Thursday to start talks with a major Muslim rebel group, marking a breakthrough in efforts to end a worsening conict in the country’s south that has claimed over 5,000 lives since 2004. The agreement, signed in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur by senior Thai security ofďŹ cials and members of the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) group, opens the way for the first formal peace talks with rebels seeking autonomy or even a separate state in the south. The ofďŹ cials gave no details on whether the deal to launch a “dialogue processâ€? would be accompanied by a ceaseďŹ re, following an upsurge in violence there in recent months. There was also no immediate word on when any peace talks would be held. Successive Thai governments and the military have made contact with various rebel groups and are believed to have held secret talks, but they have never had open discussions. The talks follow a shift in Thailand’s stance last year when it acknowledged the conict’s “political natureâ€? for the ďŹ rst time after years of relying on military action that has steadily alienated majority Muslims in the southern provinces. “This is a major milestone,â€? said Anthony Davis, a Thai-based analyst at security consulting ďŹ rm IHS-Jane’s. “This is not just business as usual.
This confers a level of legitimacy on the armed opposition in southern Thailand, from which realistically there is no going back.â€? Past efforts to end the conict have led nowhere and the legitimacy of the new process could be thrown into doubt if some rebel factions respond with more attacks in coming weeks. A peace process could also face institutional resistance from Thailand’s military, which has 60,000 troops in the south enforcing a state of emergency. “The signing is part of a policy written by the government. The military has nothing to do with today’s decision,â€? Udomchai Thammasarorat,
commander of the Fourth Army in southern Thailand, told Reuters. “We’ve opened up other ways to begin dialogue including giving insurgents an opportunity to turn themselves in and ďŹ ght their case through the Thai justice system.â€? Resistance to Buddhist rule from Bangkok has existed for decades in the predominantly Muslim provinces, waning briey in the 1990s before resurfacing violently in January 2004. In recent months, the shadowy rebel groups have stepped up their campaign against schools in the area, which they see as a state tool to assimilate Muslims, killing at least ďŹ ve teachers.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulXPEXO´ ORQJ Ă€DJV DOO WKHVH DUH SUHURJDWLYHV RU DWWULEXWHV of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjorâ€?, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Steven Spielberg to head Cannes jury this year Associated Press Writer
PARIS — France’s Cannes Film Festival says it has ďŹ nally snagged Steven Spielberg to serve as president of the award jury. Gilles Jacob, the festival’s president, recounted how he had been trying to get the award-winning director to head the jury for years — but the American was always working. Finally, this year, Spielberg got in touch. “When this year I was told ‘E.T., phone home,’ I understood and immediately replied: ‘At last!’â€? Jacob said in a statement posted on the festival’s website Thursday. Spielberg, who was nominated but didn’t win the directing Oscar for his biopic “Lincolnâ€? this week, takes the reins from Italian Nanni Moretti. The 66th Cannes festival takes place in the glamorous French Mediterranean resort
from May 15 to 26. Spielberg’s presence will likely give more of an American flavor this year to the Cannes festival, a mĂŠlange of intellectual international cinema and Hollywood glamour. Jury presidents in the festival’s seven-decade history have included such figures as Tennessee Williams, Ingrid Bergman, Roman Polanski and Francis Ford Coppola. Spielberg has had several ďŹ lms show at Cannes, and “E.T.â€? had its world premiere there in 1982. His ďŹ rst ďŹ lm, “Sugarland Express,â€? won best screenplay at Cannes in 1974. “It is an honor and a privilege to
preside over the jury of a festival that proves, again and again, that cinema is the language of the world,â€? Spielberg was quoted as saying in a statement by the Cannes festival organizers. “The most prestigious of its kind, the festival has always established the motion picture as a cross cultural and generational medium.â€? At last year’s Cannes festival, Michael Haneke won the top prize with his stark ďŹ lm about love and death, “Amour.â€?

HONG KONG — Karen Mok wrestles with what’s been a life-long question for her on the title of her ďŹ rst English album, “Somewhere I Belong.â€? The Hong Kong pop diva has a half-Chinese, half-Welsh father and her mother is half-Chinese, one quarter-Iranian and a quarterGerman. It’s easy to see why Mok cannot pinpoint one ethnic identity. So where exactly does she feel like she belongs? Mok explains it’s not a geographic location, but rather her home is on stage, wherever she performs. “ I t ’s a b o u t what I do, when I feel comfortable, that’s when I’m doing what I love most, that’s singing, that’s when I’m performing on stage, and just

singing my heart out, sharing my emotions,â€? she said. “So that’s where I belong.â€? After 16 successful Mandarin/Cantonese albums, Mok is venturing into English lyrics and a mix of music styles. The album is her ďŹ rst attempt to cross from pop to jazz. She sings classic jazz tunes, as well as reinterpretations of Chinese and Western pop songs. Insisting on a jazz album with an Asian sound, Mok made the album in China with Asian musicians and added a traditional Chinese instrument, the gu zeng string instrument, to the background of some tracks. The 42-year-old songstress has been on the Asian entertainment scene for more than 20 years. She’s starred in over 40 feature ďŹ lms and is the ďŹ rst Asian female artist to star in a Broadway show, when she was cast as Mimi in the 10th anniversary Asian tour of “Rent.â€? Mok is currently promoting “Somewhere I Belongâ€? in Asia. Later this year, she will appear in Keanu Reeves’s directorial debut, “Man of Tai Chi.â€?
