LOS ANGELES - “Hidden Figures” was the surprise best film ensemble winner at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild awards, a show overshadowed by politics as stars slammed U.S. President Donald Trump for restricting entry for travelers from seven Muslim-majority nations. “Hidden Figures,” the true story of three black female mathematicians during the 1960s space race, ousted awards front-runners “Manchester By the Sea” and “Moonlight” to claim the night’s top prize. “This story is about what happens when we put our differences aside and we come together,” star Taraji P. From doctor to US military cook, Trump ban upends many lives

LOS ANGELES — A doctor who saved Syrian lives and a man who cooked thousands of meals for American soldiers in Iraq were among those who saw their lives thrown into limbo when President Donald Trump’s executive order barred travelers from seven Muslim countries from entering the U.S. In some instances the order separated mothers from young children and husbands from wives as people with valid entry visas were stranded in countries around the world.
“I was shocked. She has a visa and they’re telling her she can’t go,” Ahmed Ali said by phone Monday from a hotel in the African country of Djibouti after authorities refused to let his 12-year-old daughter, Eman, board a plane with him to the United States. Ali, his wife and their two older children are U.S. citizens but Eman was born in Yemen and has been living there with her grandparents. The 38-year-old grocery store manager from Los Banos, California, said he spent five years trying to get Eman a visa and finally obtained one Thursday. By Saturday, when they tried to leave, it had been invalidated and he said he wasn’t sure what he’d do next. Meanwhile, he’s worried that if he doesn’t return home soon he could lose his job. “It is racist,” he said of Trump’s order. “We are being
targeted for our nationality and religion.” Also barred from returning is Khaled Almilaji, a Syrian doctor who has been attending Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on a scholarship while he studies ways to rebuild his country’s health system. He said that his pregnant wife remains in the United States while he is in Turkey. “It is really sad where the world is going to,” said Almilaji, who risked his life to provide medical care during Syria’s civil war and coordinated a campaign that vaccinated 1.4 million Syrian children. Trump denied the order was to blame for chaos at the nation’s airports where hundreds of legal residents with green cards were stopped and interrogated for hours over the weekend while many with valid entry visas were simply
turned away. Instead Trump blamed computer glitches and the large airport protests his order prompted as he took to Twitter to argue it was needed because there are “a lot of ‘dudes’ out there.” The president issued a 90-day ban on travelers from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. He also suspended the admission of all refugees for 120 days and indefinitely barred refugees from Syria. Continued to page 6

Strong wind and sandstorm lunges at Kuta Beach
MANGUPURA - Strong winds accompanied by a sandstorms hit the coastal area of Kuta on Monday (Jan. 30). Visitors, vendors and a number of motorists near the white sandy beach were surprised by such conditions.
According to one food vendor on Kuta Beach, such strong winds are a yearly occurance. “ Stong winds accompanied by sandstorms hot this coast and coause people’S eyes to get soar from the sand and dried leaves are also kicked by the winds”, said the vendor. Head of the Badung Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), Putu Eka Merthawan, said that hundreds of personnel had been deployed to deal with the natural disaster. “Today (Monday—Ed) our team has come down to Jalan Pantai Kuta to handle the impact of the sandstorms. We have collected one cubic meter od sand from the road that has been returned to the
beach”, he said. Such extreme weather, he said, will likely continue until Febuary. Dry blowing winds carrying beach sand also cause hibiscus leaves along Kuta Beach to shrivel up and fly away”, said Merthawan. “According to the weather forecast, this ‘West monsoon’ will peak in February so we will continue to remain alert and clean sand from the streets and remove organic waste fcaused by the dry heat, from the beach”, he said. This beach that is a favorite destination for foreigners visiting Bali now looks barren and is covered in dry leaves. “We have mobilized a dedicated team of 200 people to handle the impact of this phenomenon. Meanwhile 300 people and two loading trucks have been deployed to deal with marine debris on Kedonganan Beach that mostly consists of plastic waste”, he explained. (kmb27)
MANGUPURA - The agricultural sector is increasingly excluded from the list of potential investments. In Badung it would appear that more people are interested in investing in trade, hotels and restaurants. Of the hundreds of investments made in this region, only 20 percent are concerned with this primary sectorr od the economy. Head of the Badung Investment and Integrated Services (OSS), I Made Sutama, confirmed on Monday (Jan. 30) that investment in Badung is still dominated by the tertiary sector, especially tourism services. With a total of 409 permits issued very few had anything to do with agriculture. “Well ... incoming investments are predominated aimed at the tertiary sector, particularly the tourism sector accounting for 80 percent of investments”, he said. According to Sutama, Bading is not the only area where this is happening. A number of other districts in Bali are seeing similar conditions. Nevertheless, his office is still issuing permits for investment in Badung because there have been no studies or rules that prohibit the development of hotel accommodation in the area. “Indeed, so far there have been no instructions about limiting investment in this sector
(tourism—Ed). As long as they are qualified and there is no prohibition we will certainly follow up on them (requests for investment permits),” he said. Sutma explained that the criteira for building tourist accommodations in Badung have been set forth in Regent Regulation No. 36/2014 on the minimum standards of land area and room area as well as supporting facilities of hotels and condotel dated June 3, 2014 and which came into force on August 1, 2014. The regent regulation establishes that each hotel and condotel development in the district of Badung must meet the minimum standards for land area and room area as well as supporting facilities. For the subdistrict of Kuta, the minimal land area is 0.50 hectare, North Kuta (0.75 hectare) and South Kuta (1 hectare). Meanwhile, the room area for hotels and condotels -including bathrooms, is set for 32 square meters. In addition, the regulation also sets standards for other supporting facilities such as the need for a front office, lobby, kitchen, dining room for hotel / condotel guests, security post, CCTVs and fire extinguishers. “Indeed we have not implemented a moratorium, but accomodations must built according the reent regulation”, he concluded. NEGARA - During the long weekend holiday for the Lunar New Year last week, the ferry crossing in the Bali straights was quiter than usual with far less passengers making the cossing between Bali and Java. The same was true for freight vessels moving between Gilimanuk and Ketapang. Business Manager of ASDP Gilimanuk, Sugeng Purnomo, conformed on Monday (Jan 30), that there was in fact very little activity at Gilimanuk Harour over the weekend. As seen on Friday (Jan. 27), there were
1,086 foot passengers entering Bali, 1,766 motorcyles and 1,684 four-wheeled vehicles. On Saturday (Jan. 28) the numbers increased to 1432 foot passnegers, 1, 838 motocycles and 1, 395 four-wheeled vehicles. But this is still less than the average for most days when the figures tend to hover around 2,500 motorcycles and 2,000 four-wheeled vehicles. It is speculated that the decreaase in the amount of traffic at sea happened because the holidays were short and recent bad weather conditions. (kmb26)

The Beach Bar itself is a loose arrangement of tables set back from the shore on decking and bean bags on the beach, with big, bright umbrellas providing welcome shade. There’s a washed up old boat that’s been restored and is now firmly rooted in the sand as a permanent fixture from which never-ending cold drinks and coconut juices flow. The menu itself offers great variety. There’s a good selection of local dishes and some interesting wok fried options, supported by a range of salads, pastas and burgers and if you’re not sold yet, then they really know how to grill their meats and offer a good choice of steaks. We’ve been back four times now, tried something different every time and have always left happy. The Wok Fried Pad Thai Noodles and the Chilli Crab Cakes both stand out. And then there’s the cocktail menu. We counted 14 different flavours of their signature Mojitos. The Mango Basil Mojito was particularly good and the Dirty Mojito (you’ll have to go and find out why it’s Dirty for yourself) hit the spot too, not to mention the Caipiroska from the Fruity Cocktails list. After that, well, after that counting was beyond us so we went to acquaint ourselves with the gently lapping waves which had been the background music whilst we ate. Happy Hour starts at 3:00 PM every day and lasts for not one, not two but three hours. Given the refreshing taste of the aforementioned cocktails, the thirst built up by being in the sun and the fact that you simply can, this could spell trouble for those who like to imbibe of fine nectar. Or more specifically, Mojitos. But hey, you’re on holiday and other than the bar staff, who’s counting? So grab your sun cream, a good book, a friend or three and head down to Nusa Dua. Life could be a lot worse than making a bean bag your home for the day, right?

New Indonesia tsunami network could add crucial minutes
JAKARTA — Indonesia’s tsunami detection system, made up of seafloor sensors that communicate with transmitting buoys on the surface, has been rendered useless by vandals and lack of funding. Now Indonesian and U.S. scientists say they’ve developed a way to dispense with the expensive buoys and possibly add crucial extra minutes of warning for vulnerable coastal cities. The prototype, nearly four years in the making, is designed to detect so-called near-field tsunamis and has been tested off Padang on the western coast of Sumatra. It awaits a decision on government funding to connect it to disaster agencies on land. A tsunami triggered by a Dec. 26, 2004 earthquake in the Indian Ocean that killed or left missing nearly 230,000 people, a large share in Indonesia, raised the urgency of ensuring communities have the fastest possible warnings. But when a sizeable earthquake struck near the Mentawai islands 170 kilometers (106 miles) from Padang in March last year, none
of the buoys in the area meant to transmit tsunami warnings were working. A disaster official said all of Indonesia’s 22 buoys, which cost several hundred thousand dollars each and are expensive to operate, were inoperable because of vandalism by boat crews or a lack of funds for maintenance. That quake didn’t cause a tsunami but there was a chaotic evacuation in Padang, population 1 million, and other cities, which have at most 30 minutes before tsunami waves hit. Because of lack of information, officials didn’t cancel the tsunami warning for two hours. “Now we have no buoys in Indo-

nesia. They are all damaged,” said Iyan Turyana, an ocean engineer at BPPT, Indonesia’s Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology. “Where do you live in Indonesia? Jakarta! It’s ok. But if you live in Padang, if you live in Bengkulu, your life is very dangerous.” Germany and the U.S. provided 12 of the buoys, but did not maintain them, he said. For Indonesians, Aceh province in the north of Sumatra where more than 100,000 people died after 2004 earthquake, is synonymous with tsunami risk. Now, however, Padang and nearby cities face the greatest danger of being wiped out by giant waves. The magnitude 9.1 quake in 2004, centered in the north of a subduction zone where one major section of the earth’s crust is being forced under another, released enough energy to make a similarly powerful quake in that area unlikely in the foreseeable future. In the section of that “megathrust” off Padang, pressure has built relentlessly and an undersea earthquake greater than magnitude 8.5 is possible in the next few decades. To boost its detection ability, tsunami-prone Japan has linked dozens of seafloor sensors off its eastern coast with thousands of kilometers of fiber-optic cable. That cost several hundred million dollars and a similar endeavor would be impossibly expensive for Indonesia, a vast but poor archipelago in one of most seismically active regions in the world. But with $3 million of funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation, a prototype network of undersea sensors has been deployed between Padang and the Mentawai islands. Buoys are not needed because the undersea seismometers and pressure sensors send data-laden sound waves to the warm surface waters. From there they refract back into the depths, traveling 2030 kilometers to the next node in the network and so on. At its final undersea point, the network needs a few kilometers of fiber optic cable to connect it to a shore station in the Mentawai islands where the cascades of data would be transmitted by satellite to the meteorology and geophysics agency, which issues tsunami warnings, and to disaster officials in Padang. SpaceX’s Hyperloop competition sees three companies run their pods
LOS ANGELES - SpaceX hosted a hyperloop pod design test competition at its Hawthorne headquarters this past weekend, where student teams got the chance to run their pod designs in low-pressure environments in a test track for the first time. There were a number of teams competing, with 30 in total selected to come down for the trials, but only three were actually able to perform runs this weekend, since each had to pass a number of tests for things like structural integrity and vacuum chamber survivability in order to compete. The three teams that made it through include a team from MIT, one from Delft University, and one from WARR, a student group from the Technical University of Munich. The teams ran their pods in the test tube, with the fastest (WARR) achieving a max speed of around 90 km/h. The one mile test track obviously can’t achieve the max speeds or nearly 300 km/h that Hyperloop tech eventually will shoot for, and this is also early days for these designs. Delft, a school in the Netherlands, got the best overall score for its design, while TUM got the fastest time, as mentioned. MIT came in third, after having landed the award for best overall design in 2016. A final phase of the competition is set for this summer, and all 30 of the teams selected for this trial will be potentially able to compete there, even if they couldn’t pass the tests to run their pods this time around. That means we could see a much wider field in the final leg, provided the other teams can address the issues that caused them to fail this first group of tests between now and then. (rtr)
MANGUPURA - Festivals can effectively increase tourist arrivals, especially Chinese tourists. The Ministry of Tourism has organized festival for several times that invites Chinese tourists to come to Indonesia. The festival organized previously could promote the growth of foreign tourists coming to Bali. Moreover, the growth of Chinese tourist arrival reached 40 percent in 2016. “It brought in extraordinary impact where the target of tourist visit in 2016 was 12 million. Now, in 2017 the target is set at 15 million, it’s quite hard,” said the Head of the Bali Tourism Office, A.A. Gede Yuniartha, in the Wonderful Indonesia Lunar Festival 2017 organized by the Ministry of Tourism in cooperation with the central executive of ASITA at Harris Hotel Sunset Road, Kuta. Chairman of ASITA, Asnawi Bahar, said that inviting 1,000 Chinese tourists to Indonesia is a cheap campaign. “Their presence at this event will become viral for our tourism promotion when they return home to China. We think this event is very cheap because we can promote in a very simple manner,” he said. According to him, festival plus other program is very effective to increase foreign tourist visit. “This is one of the ways, not the only way. However, it is effective because they will certainly deliver at least to their families and relatives,” he said. To increase tourist visit, tourism promotion must be increased. Otherwise, it will not succeed. “On that account, promotion is an important point for tourism in Indonesia because other countries also scramble to draw Chinese travelers and their promotion is very intensive. I think that consistency of promotion should be conducted by local government. We in the ASITA become the spearhead for the target achievement of foreign tourist visit,” he said. In the meantime, free tourist visa is a facility for foreign tourists to enter Indonesia, not a facility to increase the number of foreign tourist visit. “The factor increasing the number of tourist visit is the superiority of our destinations. Free tourist visa is just a facility to enable them to come. It does not necessarily mean a major point to bring in the number of tourists,” he said. ASITA expected such festival moment can help achieve the target of 15 million tourist arrivals in 2017. “Since our target this year is 15 million and last year was 12 million, the additional 3 million is not an easy job. We have to do a promotion and a lot of activities effectively like this to help reach the target. Thus, they know about Indonesia,” he explained. He hoped the people-to-people promotion will become more effective because so far the communication is made from business-tobusiness (B to B) through travel agencies and exhibitions organized by the Ministry of Tourism. “Today we symbolize the RI by our cultures that they immediately attend,” he said. “I just work on my orders after office hours. Since our office hours are divided into several shifts, I sometimes work on our orders early in the afternoon or depends on my working shift,” he said. He described that his orders are not only accomplished at home, but sometimes at the home of the order giver because he also receives a call to work the order at customer’s home. “Sometimes I am requested to work on the order at customer’s

India plays down hit to growth from PM Modi’s cash crunch
NEW DELHI - India’s growth rate will slow by up to half a percentage point due to the government’s decision to scrap high-value banknotes, the top finance ministry economist said on Tuesday, challenging independent estimates of a far bigger impact. Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian rejected the view of the International Monetary Fund, where he used to work, that growth would be knocked a full percentage point lower by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s shock decision in November to scrap 86 percent of the cash in circulation. Modi launched the “demonetisation” drive to expose untaxed wealth and the proceeds of crime and corruption. Yet the measure - unprecedented in a stable, modern, peacetime democracy - has caused huge disruption to daily and business life in Asia’s third-largest economy. It will also complicate the fiscal arithmetic in Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s fourth annual budget, which he will present to parliament
on Wednesday. Presenting India’s pre-budget Economic Survey, which combines analysis and forecasts with a broader look at policy issues, Subramanian called demonetisation a “radical currency-cum-governance-cum social-engineering measure”. He also maintained the currency squeeze was “less severe than is commonly perceived”. ‘SIGNIFICANT HARDSHIPS’ Still, Subramanian acknowledged that official GDP figures may not fully reflect the “real and significant hardships” experienced by the informal sector, in which an estimated nine out of 10 Indian workers are employed. Without
giving a figure for growth in the fiscal year that ends in March, Subramanian said it was likely to be between one- quarter and onehalf percentage point below an earlier official forecast of around 7 percent. Growth is expected to “return to normal” in 2017/18, when it is forecast in a 6.75-7.5 percent range, as cash liquidity is restored to the economy, according to the 335-page report. By contrast, the IMF slashed its India growth forecast for the current fiscal year by a full point to 6.6 percent, handing the title of the world’s fastest-growing economy back to China, which reported 6.7 percent growth for 2016. Subramanian pointedly declined to comment on whether there had been failings in the planning and implementation of the banknote ban. He expected that a shortage of new 500
rupee ($7.40) and 2,000 rupee notes to end by April. The new notes are being issued to replace high-value ones scrapped overnight on Nov. 8.

Fired: Trump dumps top lawyer who defied immigration order
WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump fired top federal government lawyer Sally Yates on Monday after she took the extraordinarily rare step of defying the White House and refused to defend new travel restrictions targeting seven Muslim-majority nations.
It was another dramatic twist in the unusually raucous roll-out of Trump’s directive that put a 120-day hold on allowing refugees into the country, an indefinite ban on refugees from Syria and a 90-day bar on citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The Friday night ban prompted protests and chaos at airports on the weekend as customs officials struggled to put the order into practise, and the fallout spread to U.S. markets on Monday, where stocks suffered their biggest drop of 2017 and companies affected by the change spoke out against it. Yates said late on Monday that the Justice Department would not defend the order against court challenges, saying that she did not believe it would be “consistent with this institution’s solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right.”
Hours later, she was fired. The White House said Yates “has betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States” and portrayed her actions as political. Trump has argued tougher vetting of immigrants is needed to protect America from terror attacks but critics complain that his order unfairly singles out Muslims and defiles America’s historic reputation as a welcoming place for immigrants. Yates, an appointee of former Democratic President Barack Obama, was days away from being replaced by Trump’s pick for the top spot at the Justice Department, Republican Senator Jeff Sessions, who is awaiting Senate confirmation. “Ms. Yates is an Obama Administration appointee who is weak on borders and very weak on illegal immigration,” the White House said in a statement. The White House said that Dana Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was sworn in at 9 p.m. ET and would be acting U.S. attorney general until Sessions is approved. Indonesia not be affected by Trump`s immigrant policy: President Jokowi BOYOLALI - Indonesia will not be affected by United States President Donald Trumps decision to ban immigrants from Syria and six other Muslim-majority countries. “We will not be affected by Trumps decision to ban refugees from Syria and six other Muslim-majority countries,” President Joko Widodo said here on Monday.
The president affirmed that the Indonesian constitutional principle supported equality and justice clearly. With regard to the issue, he emphasized that Indonesia was not affected by Trumps policy. “Equality and justice should be pursued,” the head of state added. Therefore, Widodo urged Indonesians not to worry after Trump halted the entry of citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries. “There is no direct impact on Indonesia,” he affirmed. Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi earlier advised Indonesian nationals living in the United States to stay calm after Trump signed on Friday an executive order that severely restricts immigration and suspends all refugee admission. The foreign ministry called on Indonesian citizens in the US to respect the US laws and maintain public orders in their respective environment, the foreign ministrys statement said here on Sunday. Retno had instructed Indonesian representatives in Washington DC, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco to open 24-hour hotline services to anticipate any possible impact that might happen. “The Indonesian Government, through Indonesias representatives across the United States, will keep on monitoring the ongoing developments and will anticipate any impacts on Indonesian citizens,” Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, director of protection of Indonesian citizens and legal entities, said in a statement.
Iqbal has also advised Indonesians to understand their rights in any situation, which could be found on the US Civil Liberties Union website (www.aclu.org). “This is needed because one of the important components in the executive order signed by Trump is policies on arrest and deportation of illegal immigrants who were protected during the previous administration with the presence of sanctuary policies in several cities and counties,” he stated. Reuters reported that Trump on Friday put a four-month hold on allowing refugees into the United States and temporarily barred travelers from Syria and six other Muslim-majority countries, saying the moves would help protect Americans from terrorist attacks. He noted that the most sweeping
use of his presidential powers since taking office a week ago, barring travelers from the seven nations for at least 90 days, would give his administration time to develop more stringent screening procedures for refugees, immigrants and visitors. “Im establishing new vetting measures to keep radical Islamic terrorists out of the United States of America. Dont want them here,” Trump said earlier on Friday at the Pentagon. “We only want to admit those into our country who will support our country and love our people deeply,” he added. The bans, though temporary, took effect immediately, causing havoc and confusion for would-be travelers with passports from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.(ant)
Rail services disrupted as floods hits Pasuruan
JEMBER - Floods hit Pasuruan District, East Java, on Tuesday, disrupting the Mutiara Timur train connecting the Banyuwangi-Surabaya route and the Probowangi train serving the Surabaya-Banyuwangi route. The Mutiara Timur train was halted at the Pasuruan station, while
the Probowangi train at Bangil station, according to Luqman Arif, spokesman of the state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia. Floodwaters, reaching a height of around 20 centimeters, inundated areas between Pasuruan and Bangil.
The arrival of the Mutiara Timur train was delayed by some three hours, and Probowangi, by 77 minutes, due to the flooding. The railway tracks, which were submerged, at the Bangil and Pasuruan stations are now passable, but the speed was restricted to five kilometers per hour. (ant)

After nearly three years in exile because of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, Shakhtar said on Monday it completed a deal to move into the 40,000-capacity Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv. The stadium was a venue for the 2012 European Championship and was formerly home to club side Metalist Kharkiv, which collapsed financially last year. Shakhtar has played on occasion since then in Kharkiv, which is 150 miles (240 kilometers) from Donetsk. The team said the response from fans persuaded it to sign a longer deal. “The matches we held in Kharkiv have proved that there are many Shakhtar fans in this region,” Shakhtar general director Sergei Palkin said in a statement. “This will enable us to be closer to our fans, and I am convinced that we can make them happy with our
spectacular performance and good results.” Spanish club Celta Vigo will be Shakhtar’s opposition for its first home game under the new agreement in the Europa League on Feb. 23. The Ukrainian league resumes following its winter break later that month. Shakhtar has not been able to play in its home city of Donetsk since 2014 because the city is under the control of Russian-backed separatists. The club’s Donbass Arena has sustained light damage from shelling and has been used as a distribution point for humanitarian aid. BEIJING — Brazilian forward Alexandre Pato has signed with Tianjin Quanjian, the latest major acquisition by the Chinese Super League. Pato posted on Twitter Monday that he was “very happy” to join Quanjian from Spanish club Villarreal. Tianjin did not immediately confirm a report in Chinese state media that his transfer fee was 18 million euros ($19.3 million). The 27-year-old Pato scored six goals in 24 appearances for Villarreal after playing just twice during a disappointing loan spell at English giants Chelsea. He has been in and out of Villarreal’s starting lineup amid rumors of a transfer to China. Quanjian, promoted to China’s Super League after winning the second tier last year, also acquired Belgium’s Axel Witsel this month and is coached by former Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro. The grassy headlands are borderless and while they provide breathtaking unobstructed panoramic views, they can be quite hazardous during strong winds. Fired: Trump dumps top lawyer who defied immigration order
WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump fired top federal government lawyer Sally Yates on Monday after she took the extraordinarily rare step of defying the White House and refused to defend new travel restrictions targeting seven Muslim-majority nations.
It was another dramatic twist in the unusually raucous roll-out of Trump’s directive that put a 120-day hold on allowing refugees into the country, an indefinite ban on refugees from Syria and a 90-day bar on citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The Friday night ban prompted protests and chaos at airports on the weekend as customs officials struggled to put the order into practise, and the fallout spread to U.S. markets on Monday, where stocks suffered their biggest drop of 2017 and companies affected by the change spoke out against it. Yates said late on Monday that the Justice Department would not defend the order against court challenges, saying that she did not believe it would be “consistent with this institution’s solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right.”
Hours later, she was fired. The White House said Yates “has betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States” and portrayed her actions as political. Trump has argued tougher vetting of immigrants is needed to protect America from terror attacks but critics complain that his order unfairly singles out Muslims and defiles America’s historic reputation as a welcoming place for immigrants. Yates, an appointee of former Democratic President Barack Obama, was days away from being replaced by Trump’s pick for the top spot at the Justice Department, Republican Senator Jeff Sessions, who is awaiting Senate confirmation. “Ms. Yates is an Obama Administration appointee who is weak on borders and very weak on illegal immigration,” the White House said in a statement. The White House said that Dana Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was sworn in at 9 p.m. ET and would be acting U.S. attorney general until Sessions is approved. Indonesia not be affected by Trump`s immigrant policy: President Jokowi BOYOLALI - Indonesia will not be affected by United States President Donald Trumps decision to ban immigrants from Syria and six other Muslim-majority countries. “We will not be affected by Trumps decision to ban refugees from Syria and six other Muslim-majority countries,” President Joko Widodo said here on Monday.
The president affirmed that the Indonesian constitutional principle supported equality and justice clearly. With regard to the issue, he emphasized that Indonesia was not affected by Trumps policy. “Equality and justice should be pursued,” the head of state added. Therefore, Widodo urged Indonesians not to worry after Trump halted the entry of citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries. “There is no direct impact on Indonesia,” he affirmed. Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi earlier advised Indonesian nationals living in the United States to stay calm after Trump signed on Friday an executive order that severely restricts immigration and suspends all refugee admission. The foreign ministry called on Indonesian citizens in the US to respect the US laws and maintain public orders in their respective environment, the foreign ministrys statement said here on Sunday. Retno had instructed Indonesian representatives in Washington DC, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco to open 24-hour hotline services to anticipate any possible impact that might happen. “The Indonesian Government, through Indonesias representatives across the United States, will keep on monitoring the ongoing developments and will anticipate any impacts on Indonesian citizens,” Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, director of protection of Indonesian citizens and legal entities, said in a statement.

JEMBER - Floods hit Pasuruan District, East Java, on Tuesday, disrupting the Mutiara Timur train connecting the Banyuwangi-Surabaya route and the Probowangi train serving the Surabaya-Banyuwangi route. The Mutiara Timur train was halted at the Pasuruan station, while
the Probowangi train at Bangil station, according to Luqman Arif, spokesman of the state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia. Floodwaters, reaching a height of around 20 centimeters, inundated areas between Pasuruan and Bangil.
The arrival of the Mutiara Timur train was delayed by some three hours, and Probowangi, by 77 minutes, due to the flooding. The railway tracks, which were submerged, at the Bangil and Pasuruan stations are now passable, but the speed was restricted to five kilometers per hour. (ant)

India plays down hit to growth from PM Modi’s cash crunch
NEW DELHI - India’s growth rate will slow by up to half a percentage point due to the government’s decision to scrap high-value banknotes, the top finance ministry economist said on Tuesday, challenging independent estimates of a far bigger impact. Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian rejected the view of the International Monetary Fund, where he used to work, that growth would be knocked a full percentage point lower by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s shock decision in November to scrap 86 percent of the cash in circulation. Modi launched the “demonetisation” drive to expose untaxed wealth and the proceeds of crime and corruption. Yet the measure - unprecedented in a stable, modern, peacetime democracy - has caused huge disruption to daily and business life in Asia’s third-largest economy. It will also complicate the fiscal arithmetic in Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s fourth annual budget, which he will present to parliament
on Wednesday. Presenting India’s pre-budget Economic Survey, which combines analysis and forecasts with a broader look at policy issues, Subramanian called demonetisation a “radical currency-cum-governance-cum social-engineering measure”. He also maintained the currency squeeze was “less severe than is commonly perceived”. ‘SIGNIFICANT HARDSHIPS’ Still, Subramanian acknowledged that official GDP figures may not fully reflect the “real and significant hardships” experienced by the informal sector, in which an estimated nine out of 10 Indian workers are employed. Without
giving a figure for growth in the fiscal year that ends in March, Subramanian said it was likely to be between one- quarter and onehalf percentage point below an earlier official forecast of around 7 percent. Growth is expected to “return to normal” in 2017/18, when it is forecast in a 6.75-7.5 percent range, as cash liquidity is restored to the economy, according to the 335-page report. By contrast, the IMF slashed its India growth forecast for the current fiscal year by a full point to 6.6 percent, handing the title of the world’s fastest-growing economy back to China, which reported 6.7 percent growth for 2016. Subramanian pointedly declined to comment on whether there had been failings in the planning and implementation of the banknote ban. He expected that a shortage of new 500
rupee ($7.40) and 2,000 rupee notes to end by April. The new notes are being issued to replace high-value ones scrapped overnight on Nov. 8.
NO LONGER IN DENIAL Despite Subramanian’s cautious assessment, private sector economists said it was important he at least recognised that demonetisation had taken a toll on the Indian economy. “This is perhaps the first acknowledgement coming from the government. Otherwise so far there has been a denial,” said Aneesh Srivastava, chief investment office at IDBI Federal Life Insurance Co in Mumbai. Jaitley is expected in Wednesday’s budget to offer some tax “sops” to individuals to ease the pain of demonetisation, and ramp up public sector investment to offset weak consumption and private capital investment. New Indonesia tsunami network could add crucial minutes
JAKARTA — Indonesia’s tsunami detection system, made up of seafloor sensors that communicate with transmitting buoys on the surface, has been rendered useless by vandals and lack of funding. Now Indonesian and U.S. scientists say they’ve developed a way to dispense with the expensive buoys and possibly add crucial extra minutes of warning for vulnerable coastal cities. The prototype, nearly four years in the making, is designed to detect so-called near-field tsunamis and has been tested off Padang on the western coast of Sumatra. It awaits a decision on government funding to connect it to disaster agencies on land. A tsunami triggered by a Dec. 26, 2004 earthquake in the Indian Ocean that killed or left missing nearly 230,000 people, a large share in Indonesia, raised the urgency of ensuring communities have the fastest possible warnings. But when a sizeable earthquake struck near the Mentawai islands 170 kilometers (106 miles) from Padang in March last year, none
of the buoys in the area meant to transmit tsunami warnings were working. A disaster official said all of Indonesia’s 22 buoys, which cost several hundred thousand dollars each and are expensive to operate, were inoperable because of vandalism by boat crews or a lack of funds for maintenance. That quake didn’t cause a tsunami but there was a chaotic evacuation in Padang, population 1 million, and other cities, which have at most 30 minutes before tsunami waves hit. But if you live in Padang, if you live in Bengkulu, your life is very dangerous.” Germany and the U.S. provided 12 of the buoys, but did not maintain them, he said. For Indonesians, Aceh province in the north of Sumatra where more than 100,000 people died after 2004 earthquake, is synonymous with tsunami risk. Now, however, Padang and nearby cities face the greatest danger of being wiped out by giant waves. The magnitude 9.1 quake in 2004, centered in the north of a subduction zone where one major section of the earth’s crust is being forced under another, released enough energy to make a similarly powerful quake in that area unlikely in the foreseeable future. In the section of that “megathrust” off Padang, pressure has built relentlessly and an undersea earthquake greater than magnitude 8.5 is possible in the next few decades. To boost its detection ability, tsunami-prone Japan has linked dozens of seafloor sensors off its eastern coast with thousands of kilometers of fiber-optic cable. That cost several hundred million dollars and a similar endeavor would be impossibly expensive for Indonesia, a vast but poor archipelago in one of most seismically active regions in the world. But with $3 million of funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation, a prototype network of undersea sensors has been deployed between Padang and the Mentawai islands. Buoys are not needed because the undersea seismometers and pressure sensors send data-laden sound waves to the warm surface waters. From there they refract back into the depths, traveling 2030 kilometers to the next node in the network and so on. At its final undersea point, the network needs a few kilometers of fiber optic cable to connect it to a shore station in the Mentawai islands where the cascades of data would be transmitted by satellite to the meteorology and geophysics agency, which issues tsunami warnings, and to disaster officials in Padang. SpaceX’s Hyperloop competition sees three companies run their pods
LOS ANGELES - SpaceX hosted a hyperloop pod design test competition at its Hawthorne headquarters this past weekend, where student teams got the chance to run their pod designs in low-pressure environments in a test track for the first time. There were a number of teams competing, with 30 in total selected to come down for the trials, but only three were actually able to perform runs this weekend, since each had to pass a number of tests for things like structural integrity and vacuum chamber survivability in order to compete. The three teams that made it through include a team from MIT, one from Delft University, and one from WARR, a student group from the Technical University of Munich. The teams ran their pods in the test tube, with the fastest (WARR) achieving a max speed of around 90 km/h. The one mile test track obviously can’t achieve the max speeds or nearly 300 km/h that Hyperloop tech eventually will shoot for, and this is also early days for these designs. Delft, a school in the Netherlands, got the best overall score for its design, while TUM got the fastest time, as mentioned. MIT came in third, after having landed the award for best overall design in 2016. A final phase of the competition is set for this summer, and all 30 of the teams selected for this trial will be potentially able to compete there, even if they couldn’t pass the tests to run their pods this time around. That means we could see a much wider field in the final leg, provided the other teams can address the issues that caused them to fail this first group of tests between now and then. (rtr)

The Ministry of Tourism has organized festival for several times that invites Chinese tourists to come to Indonesia. The festival organized previously could promote the growth of foreign tourists coming to Bali. Chairman of ASITA, Asnawi Bahar, said that inviting 1,000 Chinese tourists to Indonesia is a cheap campaign. “Their presence at this event will become viral for our tourism promotion when they return home to China. We think this event is very cheap because we can promote in a very simple manner,” he said. According to him, festival plus other program is very effective to increase foreign tourist visit. “This is one of the ways, not the only way. However, it is effective because they will certainly deliver at least to their families and relatives,” he said. To increase tourist visit, tourism promotion must be increased. Otherwise, it will not succeed. “On that account, promotion is an important point for tourism in Indonesia because other countries also scramble to draw Chinese travelers and their promotion is very intensive. I think that consistency of promotion should be conducted by local government. We in the ASITA become the spearhead for the target achievement of foreign tourist visit,” he said. In the meantime, free tourist visa is a facility for foreign tourists to enter Indonesia, not a facility to increase the number of foreign tourist visit. “The factor increasing the number of tourist visit is the superiority of our destinations. Free tourist visa is just a facility to enable them to come. It does not necessarily mean a major point to bring in the number of tourists,” he said. ASITA expected such festival moment can help achieve the target of 15 million tourist arrivals in 2017. “Since our target this year is 15 million and last year was 12 million, the additional 3 million is not an easy job. We have to do a promotion and a lot of activities effectively like this to help reach the target. Thus, they know about Indonesia,” he explained. He hoped the people-to-people promotion will become more effective because so far the communication is made from business-tobusiness (B to B) through travel agencies and exhibitions organized by the Ministry of Tourism. “Today we symbolize the RI by our cultures that they immediately attend,” he said. that he originally got involved in a variety of crafts four years ago. Originally there was no intention to get involved in art crafts. However, after trying to make a variety of art crafts from the existing materials, until now he gets involved in various art craft making. “Having been pursued, in fact, it can bring in money. Finally, I continuously pursue it,” he said. Wiguna said that the craft making is taken as a side job because he also still works at one of the LPG distribution company on Jalan Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra. He just can work on the art craft orders after coming home from work.
“I just work on my orders after office hours. Since our office hours are divided into several shifts, I sometimes work on our orders early in the afternoon or depends on my working shift,” he said. Indeed all the crafts he handles have something to do with the arts such as carving on styrofoam, young coconut leaf arrangement, face sketch et cetera. Strong wind and sandstorm lunges at Kuta Beach
MANGUPURA - Strong winds accompanied by a sandstorms hit the coastal area of Kuta on Monday (Jan. 30). Visitors, vendors and a number of motorists near the white sandy beach were surprised by such conditions.
According to one food vendor on Kuta Beach, such strong winds are a yearly occurance. “ Stong winds accompanied by sandstorms hot this coast and coause people’S eyes to get soar from the sand and dried leaves are also kicked by the winds”, said the vendor. Head of the Badung Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), Putu Eka Merthawan, said that hundreds of personnel had been deployed to deal with the natural disaster. “Today (Monday—Ed) our team has come down to Jalan Pantai Kuta to handle the impact of the sandstorms. We have collected one cubic meter od sand from the road that has been returned to the
beach”, he said. Such extreme weather, he said, will likely continue until Febuary. Dry blowing winds carrying beach sand also cause hibiscus leaves along Kuta Beach to shrivel up and fly away”, said Merthawan. “According to the weather forecast, this ‘West monsoon’ will peak in February so we will continue to remain alert and clean sand from the streets and remove organic waste fcaused by the dry heat, from the beach”, he said. This beach that is a favorite destination for foreigners visiting Bali now looks barren and is covered in dry leaves. “We have mobilized a dedicated team of 200 people to handle the impact of this phenomenon. Meanwhile 300 people and two loading trucks have been deployed to deal with marine debris on Kedonganan Beach that mostly consists of plastic waste”, he explained. (kmb27)

In Badung it would appear that more people are interested in investing in trade, hotels and restaurants. Of the hundreds of investments made in this region, only 20 percent are concerned with this primary sectorr od the economy. Head of the Badung Investment and Integrated Services (OSS), I Made Sutama, confirmed on Monday (Jan. 30) that investment in Badung is still dominated by the tertiary sector, especially tourism services. With a total of 409 permits issued very few had anything to do with agriculture. “Well ... incoming investments are predominated aimed at the tertiary sector, particularly the tourism sector accounting for 80 percent of investments”, he said. According to Sutama, Bading is not the only area where this is happening. A number of other districts in Bali are seeing similar conditions. Nevertheless, his office is still issuing permits for investment in Badung because there have been no studies or rules that prohibit the development of hotel accommodation in the area. “Indeed, so far there have been no instructions about limiting investment in this sector
(tourism—Ed). As long as they are qualified and there is no prohibition we will certainly follow up on them (requests for investment permits),” he said. Sutma explained that the criteira for building tourist accommodations in Badung have been set forth in Regent Regulation No. 36/2014 on the minimum standards of land area and room area as well as supporting facilities of hotels and condotel dated June 3, 2014 and which came into force on August 1, 2014. The regent regulation establishes that each hotel and condotel development in the district of Badung must meet the minimum standards for land area and room area as well as supporting facilities. For the subdistrict of Kuta, the minimal land area is 0.50 hectare, North Kuta (0.75 hectare) and South Kuta (1 hectare). Meanwhile, the room area for hotels and condotels -including bathrooms, is set for 32 square meters. In addition, the regulation also sets standards for other supporting facilities such as the need for a front office, lobby, kitchen, dining room for hotel / condotel guests, security post, CCTVs and fire extinguishers. “Indeed we have not implemented a moratorium, but accomodations must built according the reent regulation”, he concluded. Mengiat Beach, home to The Beach Bar, is anything but new and we can’t believe we’ve lived in Bali for so long and somehow its existence escaped us all this time. It makes up a small but perfectly formed crescent in the Nusa Dua coastline and boasts crystal clear waters and golden sand. This is picture postcard perfect, but better. It was love at first sight for us.

The Beach Bar itself is a loose arrangement of tables set back from the shore on decking and bean bags on the beach, with big, bright umbrellas providing welcome shade. There’s a washed up old boat that’s been restored and is now firmly rooted in the sand as a permanent fixture from which never-ending cold drinks and coconut juices flow. The menu itself offers great variety. There’s a good selection of local dishes and some interesting wok fried options, supported by a range of salads, pastas and burgers and if you’re not sold yet, then they really know how to grill their meats and offer a good choice of steaks. We’ve been back four times now, tried something different every time and have always left happy. The Wok Fried Pad Thai Noodles and the Chilli Crab Cakes both stand out. And then there’s the cocktail menu. We counted 14 different flavours of their signature Mojitos. The Mango Basil Mojito was particularly good and the Dirty Mojito (you’ll have to go and find out why it’s Dirty for yourself) hit the spot too, not to mention the Caipiroska from the Fruity Cocktails list. After that, well, after that counting was beyond us so we went to acquaint ourselves with the gently lapping waves which had been the background music whilst we ate. Happy Hour starts at 3:00 PM every day and lasts for not one, not two but three hours. Given the refreshing taste of the aforementioned cocktails, the thirst built up by being in the sun and the fact that you simply can, this could spell trouble for those who like to imbibe of fine nectar. Or more specifically, Mojitos. But hey, you’re on holiday and other than the bar staff, who’s counting? So grab your sun cream, a good book, a friend or three and head down to Nusa Dua. Life could be a lot worse than making a bean bag your home for the day, right?

From doctor to US military cook, Trump ban upends many lives

LOS ANGELES — A doctor who saved Syrian lives and a man who cooked thousands of meals for American soldiers in Iraq were among those who saw their lives thrown into limbo when President Donald Trump’s executive order barred travelers from seven Muslim countries from entering the U.S. In some instances the order separated mothers from young children and husbands from wives as people with valid entry visas were stranded in countries around the world.
“I was shocked. She has a visa and they’re telling her she can’t go,” Ahmed Ali said by phone Monday from a hotel in the African country of Djibouti after authorities refused to let his 12-year-old daughter, Eman, board a plane with him to the United States. Ali, his wife and their two older children are U.S. citizens but Eman was born in Yemen and has been living there with her grandparents. The 38-year-old grocery store manager from Los Banos, California, said he spent five years trying to get Eman a visa and finally obtained one Thursday. By Saturday, when they tried to leave, it had been invalidated and he said he wasn’t sure what he’d do next. Meanwhile, he’s worried that if he doesn’t return home soon he could lose his job. “It is racist,” he said of Trump’s order. “We are being
targeted for our nationality and religion.” Also barred from returning is Khaled Almilaji, a Syrian doctor who has been attending Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on a scholarship while he studies ways to rebuild his country’s health system. He said that his pregnant wife remains in the United States while he is in Turkey. “It is really sad where the world is going to,” said Almilaji, who risked his life to provide medical care during Syria’s civil war and coordinated a campaign that vaccinated 1.4 million Syrian children. Trump denied the order was to blame for chaos at the nation’s airports where hundreds of legal residents with green cards were stopped and interrogated for hours over the weekend while many with valid entry visas were simply
turned away. Instead Trump blamed computer glitches and the large airport protests his order prompted as he took to Twitter to argue it was needed because there are “a lot of ‘dudes’ out there.” The president issued a 90-day ban on travelers from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.
