G-8 nations press Iran sanctions drive OTTAWA – Top diplomats from the world’s leading economies are ramping up pressure on Iran to prove its nuclear ambitions are peaceful, renewing calls for the country to be hit with new international sanctions if it fails to comply. In meetings outside the Canadian capital on Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and her fellow foreign ministers from the Group of Eight main industrialized nations will warn Iran again it faces fresh penalties if it doesn’t come clean on its nuclear program. But with Iran refusing to comply, their message will be largely directed at a country not represented at the talks here: China, a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council that is not a member of the exclusive G-8 club. Support from China, a vocal opponent of sanctions, is critical as it wields veto power on the council. Until recently, it had balked at the mere suggestion of taking additional punitive steps against Iran. That, Clinton suggested, may now be changing. In an interview with Canadian television on Monday, Clinton said China shared the view of the U.S., its European allies and Russia that “a nuclear-armed Iran is not acceptable.” “I think as the weeks go forward and we begin the hard work of trying to come up with a Security Council resolution, China will be involved, they will be making their suggestions,” she said. Publicly, China reiterated its stance that the countries should seek a solution through negotiations, not new sanctions. “We hope relevant parties could fully show their flexibility and make further efforts toward a proper resolution of this issue through diplomatic means,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said

Tuesday at a regular news briefing. China opposes nuclear weapons for Iran, but said the country has the right to peaceful use of nuclear energy. Iran is already under three sets of U.N. Security Council sanctions and China had been holding up consideration of a fourth. But last week it softened its position in a conference call among senior officials from the six nations working most closely on the matter, according to diplomats. A senior U.S. official told reporters traveling with Clinton that the Chinese “have said now that they will engage on the elements of a sanctions resolution.” The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing diplomatic negotiation. In Washington, meanwhile, President Barack Obama met Monday with China’s incoming ambassador to the United States. The White House said Obama stressed to the envoy the need for the two countries “to work together and with the international community on critical global issues, including nonproliferation and pursuing sustained and balanced global growth.” Clinton and other Obama administration officials have said they want the new sanctions to target Iranian companies and government elements, like the country’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, and not the Iranian people. Tennessee man pleads guilty in plot against Obama JACKSON, Tenn. – A Tennessee man authorities say is a white supremacist has pleaded guilty to plotting to kill thenpresidential candidate Barack Obama and dozens of other black people in 2008. Twenty-one-year-old Daniel Cowart of Bells, Tenn., pleaded guilty Monday to eight of 10 counts in an indictment accusing him of conspiracy, threatening a presidential candidate and various federal firearms violations.

Under a plea agreement, he faces 12 to 18 years in prison, but a federal judge could choose a longer sentence. Co-defendant, 19-year-old Paul Schlesselman of HelenaWest Helena, Ark., pleaded guilty in January and will be sentenced April 15. Authorities have described the two as skinheads who planned a cross-country robbing and killing spree that would end with an attack on Obama.

Southeast Asia Discusses Illegal Trades Mangupura (Bali Post) —

Meeting of States (BMS). It had something to do with the implementation of the Program of Action endorsed by all UN members in 2001 in order to combat the

Dewa Ngurah said that to provide understanding on the importance of community consciousness of the threat of rabies, his party remained to run the programs undertaken previously. They comprised vaccinations, elimination, and counseling to respective residents. “Especially for this elimination, we need the support of local residents, so as not to appear again any victims of rabies in Denpasar,” said Dewa Ngurah. National Exam (UN) for secondary school students in Denpasar, last Monday (Mar 29) ran flourishingly, unlike the previous national exam of SMA/SMK. Almost all the questions and computer answer sheets were complete in each room. However, the presence of students participating in the national exam never reached 100 percent. At a number of schools monitored by Bali Post, last Monday (Mar 29), some students could not join the exam at school but at hospital. They suffered from dengue fever and had to undergo inpatient treatment at hospital. One of the dengue fever patients being desperate to follow the exam at school was Komang Teja Darmandana. This student of SMPN 7 Denpasar had the same fate as Ngurah Kurniawan (students of SMAN 4 Denpasar) previously. Teja Darmandana was forced to have been infused to class while answering the tests of Bahasa Indonesia subject. He did so after tested positive to dengue

fever suffered since last Sunday (Mar 23). But, Teja claimed to have prepared himself well ahead of the national exam so he did not need to take follow-up exam. He preferred to answer the exam questions at school together with classmates. Besides, the atmosphere at school was more supportive than at hospital. ”I have confidence to graduate,” said Teja accompanied by his headmaster Titik Wahyani. Except for Teja, other students encountering unlucky fate due to dengue fever were two students of SMP PGRI 1 Denpasar. The Headmaster I Nengah Sukama said that his student, Fuad, answered the exam questions at Wangaya Hospital, while Willian Yudha did it at Bali Med Hospital. “Both were monitored by the school superintendent,” he said. At SMP PGRI 3 Denpasar was also found a participant that did not participate in the school exam, namely Arif Wicaksono. According to Headmaster of SMP PGRI 3, I Made Suada, Arif was not allowed by his doctor to answer the exam tests at school but at Bali Med Hos-

Two security officers unsettled, robbery at Sampoerna clumsy Police held reconstruction twice Denpasar, (Bali Post)—

Police officers of South Denpasar Sector Police led by Chief Gede Ganefo currently worked hard to investigate the robbery at Sampoerna’s office located on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Suwung, South Denpasar. Police had held investigation at crime scene and the reconstruction for two times. As a result, it was found irregularities, particularly the testimony of the two security officers on duty at the time of incident. “Indeed, our members found several irregularities related to this case. We have not dared to say whether there are indications of involvement of the insiders or not. We are still gathering some evidences though we have minimal witnesses,” said Chief of Denpasar Metro Police, Alit Widana, last Monday (Mar 29), after signing the inscription as pamelaspas and ngenteg linggih inauguration ceremony at the temple of the South Denpasar Sector Police. Coincidently, the two security officers respectively Ketut Agus Arya, 20, from Buleleng and Didik Suparto, 26, from Magetan, East Java, confessed to sleep soundly. BAENGNYEONG ISLAND, South Korea – South Korea’s president ordered the military on alert Tuesday for any moves by rival North Korea after the defense minister said last week’s explosion that sank a South Korean ship may have been caused by a North Korean mine. The blast ripped the 1,200-ton ship apart last Friday night during a routine patrol near Baengnyeong Island near the tense maritime border west of the divided Korean peninsula. Fifty-eight crew members, including the captain, were plucked to safety; 46 are missing, with dim prospects for their survival. Divers geared up to break into the ship Tuesday, Rear Adm. Lee Kisik of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told reporters. He said there were no signs of life inside. President Lee flew to area in the Yellow Sea where the sailors are believed trapped in a sunken segment of their ship. He reviewed the search operations, met with marines stationed on the western island and consoled family members watching the rescue mission, the presidential Blue House said. Baengnyeong is just eight miles (13 kilometers) from and within sight of a North Korean military base where surface-to-ship guided missiles and artillery are heavily deployed, presidential spokesman Park Sun-kyoo said. Earlier Tuesday, Lee ordered his military to stay alert for any moves by rival North Korea. “Since the sinking took place at the front line, the military should thoroughly prepare for any move by North Korea,” Lee told his Cabinet, according to the spokesman. “I want the military to maintain its readiness.” Military officials say the exact cause of the explosion remains un-

clear, and U.S. and South Korean officials said there was no evidence of North Korean involvement. However, Defense Minister Kim Tae-young told lawmakers Monday that a floating mine dispatched from North Korea was one of several scenarios for the disaster. “North Korea may have intentionally floated underwater mines to inflict damage on us,” Kim said. North Korean suicide squads known as “human torpedoes” may be behind the explosion, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper said in a report Tuesday, citing unidentified high-ranking defectors from the North. Suicide squads operate semi-submersible vessels equipped to carry two bombers and either two torpedoes or floating mines, the paper said, citing a North Korean sailorturned-defector. “Acoustic mines” carried by small submarines crawling along at speeds of less than 1.2 mph (2 kph), too slow to register on South Korean sonar radars, are considered particularly effective, the paper cited another defector who served in North Korean intelligence as saying. MOSCOW – A woman has died in a clinic from wounds suffered in the double suicide bombing of the Moscow subway, officials said Tuesday, raising the death toll to 39 as the country entered a day of mourning. Five people remain in critical condition out of 71 hospitalized after the blasts that were blamed on Chechen rebels, city health department official Andrei Seltsovsky told the Rossiya-24 state news channel. ing the Monday morning rush-hour at two central Moscow subway stations. It was the first terrorist activity in the Russian capital for years. Flags flew at half staff on government buildings and at the Kremlin as a day of national mourning began. Entertainment events and shows on television were cancelled. Services were to be held at several churches. Heightened transportation security remained in effect across the capital and in cities across Russia. Police with machine guns and sniffer dogs patrolled subway entrances. Monday’s first explosion took place just before 8 a.m. at the Lubyanka station in central Moscow, beneath the notorious headquarters of the Federal Security Service or

FSB, the KGB’s main successor agency. The FSB is a symbol of power under Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, a former KGB officer who headed the agency before his election as president in 2000. About 45 minutes later, a second blast hit the Park Kultury station on the same subway line, which is near the renowned Gorky Park. In both cases, the bombs were detonated as the trains pulled into the stations and the doors were opening. Debate raged in the Russian media as to the exact motive for the attacks. Newspapers speculated that the blasts were retaliation for the recent killing of militant leaders in the North Caucasus by Russian police.

Malaysia movie censors ease up, but scorn bikinis KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Malaysia’s censors have loosened decades of restrictions on sexual and religious content in movies, but are still keeping a tight leash on tiny bikinis, kisses and passionate hugs on screen. The guidelines — made public on the Home Ministry’s Web site this week — are meant to “ensure the creativity of filmmakers is not blocked,” with the caveat that “extremely negative elements” should remain off-limits, the ministry’s secretary general, Mahmood Adam, said in a statement. The state-run Film Censorship Board has long faced criticism for snipping off scenes considered too racy and banning some movies altogether. Several Hollywood films banned last year include Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Borat,” which the board said promoted homosexuality because it centered on a flamboyant gay fashion journalist. The new censorship guidelines stress that “adults should be free to choose whatever material they wish to watch, as long as the material is legitimate in terms of the law and does not have the potential to cause harm.” Previously, all profanities and

scenes of amorous kisses were excised, but the new rules suggest that censors would only remove them if they were overly explicit, such as involving nudity. The new rules list dozens of elements that might be objectionable, but indicates a movie containing them might not necessarily be prohibited. In another departure from previous guidelines, it notes that curse words might be allowed based on whether they are “appropriate in the context of a film.” Religious sensitivities in this Muslim-majority country take up a chunk of the guidelines, which discourage scenes of Muslims drinking alcohol, gambling and becoming involved in vice. Muslims could not be shown consuming alcohol and gambling earlier, but the new guidelines state that it would be permissible if the filmmaker wants to “depict a person’s transformation from being evil to good.”

No communication from 153 trapped in China mine XIANGNING, China – Anxious relatives of 153 workers trapped in a flooded mine in northern China milled helplessly above ground Tuesday, demanding action and answers as rescue efforts stretched into the third day with no communication from those stuck deep underground. Some 1,000 rescue workers were rotating on shifts to try to drain enough water to reach the trapped miners, but the rescue effort could take days. It was unclear if anyone was still alive in the shafts, some of which extended a half-mile (one kilometer) into the earth. The accident could be one of the worst mining disasters in recent years if rescue efforts fail and would set back marked improvements in mining safety. “Their situation until now is still unknown so that is making everyone very worried,” said Liu Dezheng, a chief engineer with the work safety bureau in northern China’s Shanxi province, where the mine is located. Liu warned any rescue was still days away and said the 1,000 rescuers were rotating on four-hour shifts to make sure they got enough rest in the days ahead. “This is not something that can be achieved in one or two days,” Liu said. “(Rescuers) must be prepared to work at least seven days and seven nights.” The sudden flood Sunday afternoon at the state-owned Wangjialing coal mine may have been triggered when workers dug into a network of old, water-filled shafts. Such derelict tunnels are posing new risks to miners across China even as the country improves safety in its notoriously hazardous mines, where accidents kill thousands each year. MALANG - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the setting up of a disaster handling quick response unit (SRC-PB) was aimed at optimizing post disaster emergency handling to save a maximum number of victims. “We know the most important moments are the early stages of a disaster,” the President said after inspecting the readiness of the SRCPB for the eastern regions at Abdulrahman Saleh airbase in Malang, Monday. The President said that the ability of the state or the government in handling emergency response time in the first hours or days following a disaster quickly may minimize the number of victims.

Prompted by the awareness of Indonesia‘s geographical location which is prone to natural disasters including earthquakes and tsunamis, or which was caused by human ignorance, the government has set up two SRC-PB units, the President said. The Head of State hoped SRCPB personnel are fully aware of the importance in saving human lives. Therefore, he added, SRC-PB personnel need to be active in increasing their skills and knowhow. The President hoped that some day the SRC-PB will have a higher capacity than similar units in other countries. To realize this, the government is committed to provide the necessary equipment, training and cooperation with other government institutions or countries. Earlier during a demonstration at

the Halim Perdanakusumah Air Force base, the President emphasized that the formation of the SRCPB which is equipped with a medical team, power handling team, communications handling team as well as a rapid action team. Two national scale SRC-PB units had been inaugurated by Minister Coordinating People‘s Welfare Agung Laksono on December 7 and 17, 2009, with their operational base at Halim Perdana Kusumah for the western region, and at Abdulrahman Saleh for the eastern region. The SRC-PB for the western region will handle emergency response aid for Sumatra, Kalimantan, Central Java, and West Java, while the SRC-PB for the eastern region for East Java, Sulawesi, Maluku, Nusa Tenggara and Papua.

A day after the commission opened its inaugural gathering in Jakarta on Sunday; the activists received a verbal message that no meetings would be held with outside parties until procedures for such contacts were in place. “The civil society delegation is extremely disappointed with the turn of events and views this as a beginning of a worrying sign of the rejection of civil society participation,” the umbrella group said in a statement. “We condemn the decision of the (commission) that runs in contradiction with the vision of ASEAN being a ‘People Oriented ASEAN’ in

He also said that Norway is fully supporting Indonesia and the United Nations with this program and is also ready to discuss further cooperation between Indonesia and Norway on this important issue. BALIKPAPAN - Balikpapan Police have given shelter to three human trafficking victims who had escaped from a brothel complex at kilometer 17, East Kalimantan Province. “We took into our care three women who escaped from a redlight district at Kilometer 17 this morning,” Adjunct Commissioner Agus Siswanto of the Balikpapan Police office, said here on Tuesday. The women, identified as Sri, Noor and Asriah, hailed from Jember, East Java Province. They had been promised jobs as housemaids by someone, but instead they were taken to a brothel in a red light district. They arrived from Java on Sunday (March 28). “I was promised work in Brunei (Darussalam), but one day before leaving, there was a change of des-

tination and we were taken to Kalimantan. As I was having a problem with my husband, I decided to go,” Asriah said. She recalled that after they had arrived in the brothel, they were forced to have sex with drunken clients. The next morning, they decided to run away because the job was against their conscience. The Balikpapan police are still looking for those involved in the trafficking operation. According to UNHCR (United Nations Refugee Agency)’s “Trafficking in Person Report 2009”, Indonesia is a major source of women, children, and men trafficked for the purposes of forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation. BHA signed MoU with IPRC IBP DENPASAR - Bali Hotels Association (BHA), an association of over 100 star rated hotels in Bali signed a memorandum of Understanding with the Integrated Police Radio Community Bali (IPRC). IPRC is a relatively new initiative that links the public via UHF radio to the police. The system is geared to provide reliable communications during emergencies as well as better accessibility of regular police assistance. The integrated police radio community enables its members to link to POLSEK Kuta 24 hours a day. Regular round calls provide situation updates – assisting the police to anticipate problems before they arise, track suspicious persons and to exchange security and safety related information without delays throughout Southern Bali. The public private partnership (PPP) initiative was started after last years Jakarta bombing. Initial equipment such as antennas and base stations was donated by Bali Hotels Association. The system is managed by IPRC in close cooperation with POLSEK Kuta. IPRC and POLSEK Kuta provide comprehensive technical and practical training to IPRC members. The training covers security related subjects such as police radio etiquette, crime scene management and SATPAM training. Monday’s signing ceremony cemented the cooperation between IPRC and BHA in order to ensure the sustainable development of the system in the future. The MoU was signed by the Head of Kuta Police Dody Prawira, IPRC Chief Jonathan Soehartono, BHA chairman J.C. Bali need breakthrough to gain benefit from tourism Antara

Denpasar – Bali need to create breakthrough in order to get better result from the development of tourism in Bali. Kadek Arimbawa, the member of Indonesian House of Representative, said “the breakthrough can be cooperation with the insurance company to give health insurance for the tourists who are visiting Bali. It can give extra income to the government.” He urged that the government and the legislators creating laws as the base of the cooperation. Through the cooperation, Bali’s Government doesn’t have to pay to the tourists if they suf-

fer from health problem during their holiday in Bali. It also can save the budget so the government can give more benefit from tourism. “It is quite odd that Bali which is visited by more than 2 million tourists a year doesn’t receive any benefit from the development,” Arimbawa said. While the hotel and restaurants tax is given to each province to manage it so Bali Government basically didn’t reciev anything from the development of tourism. Based on the record, Bali can give $1.6 million to the central government a year from tourism. However, based

on the study done by the team from Udayana University, Bali donates more than 30 billion rupiah a year to the national income. The contribution is not included with the Visa on Arrival (VoA) which is being paid by the tourists when they arrive in Ngurah Rai International Airport. It also give high contribution for the national income. Even tough Bali contributes a lot to the Indonesian government but Bali didn’t receive the proper amount of money as the result of the development. Currently, the representatives of Bali still urge the government to share some of the profit to the locals in Bali.

Budiana held an exhibition on the BSF Antara

Denpasar – I Ketut Budiana, an artist from Padangtegal, Ubud, held a panting exhibition in the “Bali Spirit Festival” (BSF) in Ubud, Gianyar. Budiana said “the exhibition has a theme with Yoga, the inspiration is limitless. I exhibit 60 of my finest work.”

He explained that the exhibition is being held in Arma Museum strated from March 31st through April 25th 2010. “The exhibition and the BSF are opened at the same time by Indonesian Cultural and Tourism Minister, Jero Wacik,” Budiana explained. He often held exhibition in many countries throughout the world and

many of his works become the collection in various museum all around the globe. Budiana started his passion on paintings in 1972. His talent combined with the formal education made him as a modern eastern painting. In the 40 years of working with the art, he establishes himself as the artists who has eastern values.

Babi Kecap (Pork Cooked in Soya Sauce) Though Indonesia is an Islamic country, there is some pork available. It is hard to find and most restaurants don’t serve it because any restaurant that cooks pork would have to have completely separate facilities and equipment to prepare it or the restaurant would not be considered halal (clean). Ingredients: 1/2 kg (1 1/4 lb) fillet of pork -or leg of pork 1 tb Clear soya sauce 2 tb Plain flour 1/2 ts Powdered ginger 20 g (4 oz) button mushrooms 4 Cloves garlic 1 sl of root ginger, about 2 cm -(1") across and 1/2 cm -(1/4") thick 3 tb Dark soya sauce Pepper or a pinch of chilli -powder 2 tb water 2 tb Medium dry sherry or rice -wine (optional) 2 ts Lemon juice 6 tb Oil or pork fat Directions: This, as its name suggests, is pork cooked in soya sauce. It is a particular favourite with my own husband and children, who always know when it is about to appear on the table because the ginger and garlic frying in the sauce smell so deliciously savoury. Cut the pork into small cubes. Put the flour into a bowl and add the clear soya sauce and ginger powder, mixing them well together. Coat the pork with the mixture and then let it stand for at least 30 minutes. Clean and slice the mushrooms. Peel the garlic and ginger and slice them very thin; you can use these thin slices as they are, or cut them again into very tiny sticks. Heat the oil or fat in a wok or thick frying pan and fry the meat, half of it at a time, turning it from time to time, for 5 minutes. Repeat the process for the remaining half of the meat. The flour that coated the meat will tend to stay in the pan or stick to the bottom of it, but leave it there-it will thicken the sauce later. Now take most of the oil out of the pan, leaving only about two tablespoons which you then heat again. In this, fry the tiny slices of garlic and ginger and the mushrooms, stirring continuously, for i minute. Add the soya sauce, the water and the meat. mix well, season with pepper or chilli powder, and stir continuously for 1 or 2 minutes. just before serving, add the sherry or rice wine and the lemon juice. Serve hot. This dish keeps extremely well in the freezer, and it is worth making a large quantity from, say, half a leg-of pork, which is much cheaper than buying pork fillet. If you are going to freeze your Babi Kecap, however, do not add the sherry or lemon juice at the time of cooking. To serve from the freezer, thaw the meat out completely and heat quickly on a high flame for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring or shaking the pan well all the time. Malaysia announces bold economic reform plans Agence France-Presse

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia on Tuesday unveiled economic reforms aimed at attracting foreign investment, raising incomes and propelling growth to meet its goal of achieving developed-nation status by 2020. Prime Minister Najib Razak said the “New Economic Model” would boost the quality of the work force and reduce dependence on the millions of foreign workers who power Malaysia’s plantations and manufacturing sectors. He also took aim at a decades-old affirmative action policy for majority Muslim Malays and indigenous groups — collectively known as “bumiputra” — which has been criticised as uncompetitive. “We need a new way of doing things. While the recovery has begun, we must act now to position Malaysia for the future,” Najib said in a speech. “And this is the choice we now face: To rise out of the ‘middle-income’ trap that will be a precarious position for any nation in the new global economy, or to stick to what we know, and what is comfortable.” Malaysia’s economy shrank 1.7 percent last year as its crucial export markets dried up during the global downturn.

The central bank has forecast 5.5 percent expansion this year but as the region emerges from recession, competition for investment has become fierce, with Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam eroding Malaysia’s attractiveness. “We want to see a Malaysia that makes a quantum leap from the current 7,000 dollar per capita annual income to 15,000 dollars in 10 years,” Najib said. “Bold reform measures will unlock investment, drive labour productivity and boost efficiency, lifting real growth rate to an average of 6.5 percent per annum over the 2011-2020 period. CIMB chief economist Lee Heng Guie said the policy announcement was a “strong statement of intent” but details of how Najib intended to achieve the grand goals were lacking. Lee said the 6.5 percent annual growth target is “challenging given the uncertain external economic environment”.

Jeffrey Sachs, the special adviser to the UN secretary-general told an audience at the national university that the government needed to be smart about how it spends billions of dollars in oil and gas revenues. “I want to make a prediction right here — you can hold me to it. Timor Leste will grow faster between 2010 and 2020, economically... than China,” he said in a public lecture, using the country’s formal name. The leading economist and global development expert is scheduled to hold highlevel meetings with UN representatives, senior officials and donors in Dili during

his six-day visit. He said Asia was “catching up very quickly” with developed economies and East Timor, one of the poorest countries in the world, would ride the regional wave to greater prosperity. “Timor-Leste will accomplish this kind of convergence over the next generation, so what’s happening in Asia will happen in this country very powerfully,” he said. Sachs told a packed house that extreme poverty could be eradicated if the government focused on investment in human capital, infrastructure and developing sectors such as tourism and agriculture. East Timor has been on a rocky road since formal independence from Indonesia in 2002. More than half of all children under five are malnourished and about 40 percent of the population lives below the poverty line.

SHANGHAI - McDonald’s said Tuesday it plans to nearly double its number of outlets in China by the end of 2013 as the US fastfood giant seeks to expand its presence in the world’s biggest developing economy. The company aims to boost the number of its outlets in China to 2,000 from around 1,100 in three years, Dow Jones Newswires reported, citing Tim Fenton, the company’s

president of Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa. McDonald’s will open 150-175 outlets in the country this year, its China chief executive Kenneth Chan said. The company, the epitome of free-market US capitalism, opened its first outlet in communist China in the southern boomtown of Shenzhen in 1990 and now employs more than 60,000 people around the country.

HONG KONG - Hong Kong’s Hutchison Whampoa said Tuesday net profit rose 12 percent last year, as gains from property sale and the sale of assets more than offset losses at its energy and 3G technology units. The port-to-telecoms conglomerate, headed by Hong Kong’s richest man Li Ka-shing, said in a statement to the city’s stock exchange that net profit was 14.17 billion Hong Kong dollars (1.8 billion US) in 2009, up from 12.68 billion dollars in 2008. The result was lower than the average forecast for a net profit of 15.54 billion dollars in a poll of six analysts by Dow Jones Newswires. The group’s total revenue dropped 14 percent to 300.55 billion dollars, mainly because of a business slump at its Canada-listed affiliate Husky Energy resulted from sharp declines in oil and gas prices last year, it said.

And income at its ports division dived 16 percent due to lower trading activity amid the global financial crisis, the statement said. Losses in its third-generation technology operations slumped 67 percent to 5.28 billion dollars, primarily due to the merger of its 3 Australia with the Australian unit of British mobile phone giant Vodafone. Li said in the statement that its 3G results were expected to improve and make a positive contribution to earnings. The Marsili volcano, which is bursting with magma, has “fragile walls” that could collapse, Enzo Boschi told the leading daily Corriere della Sera. “It could even happen tomorrow,” said Boschi, president of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). “Our latest research shows that the volcano is not structurally solid, its walls are fragile, the magma chamber is of sizeable dimensions,” he said. “All that tells us that the volcano is active and could begin erupting at any time.” The event would result in “a strong tsunami that could strike the coasts of Campania, Calabria and Sicily,” Boschi said. The undersea Marsili, 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) tall and located some 150 kilometres (90 miles) southwest of Naples, has not erupted since the start of recorded history. It is 70 kilometres long and 30 kilometres wide, and its crater is some 450 metres below the surface of the Tyrrhenian Sea. “A rupture of the walls would let loose millions of cubic metres of material capable of generating a very powerful wave,” Boschi said. “While the indications that have been collected are precise, it is impossible to make predictions. The risk is real but hard to evaluate.”

IPad could be Kindle’s first big threat in e-books Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO – Amazon.com, which has dominated the young but fast-growing electronic book market for the past few years with the Kindle, could get its biggest threat Saturday, when Apple releases its iPad multimedia tablet. The Kindle starts at $259 and is designed mainly for reading text on a gray-and-black screen. The iPad starts at $499, but with the higher price comes more functions: a color touch screen for downloading books from Apple’s new iBookstore, surfing the Web, playing videos and games and more. It will take time to determine whether the iPad causes a tremor in the e-reader market, a highmagnitude quake or something in between. But in the meantime people who read electronic books or are considering buying a reading device will find their choices getting more complicated. If the Kindle e-reader falls out of favor with people drawn to Apple’s offering, there could be a very thick silver lining for Amazon: It sells e-books that can be read on many kinds of devices, including the iPad and other Apple gadgets. That means the Kindle could fade and Amazon could still occupy a profitable perch in e-books. However, Apple could find

ways to tilt the field in its favor. At least for now, both the Apple iBookstore and the Kindle service will be accessible in much the same way on the iPad — as “application” icons that users can click. Eventually Apple could give its own bookstore and reading program more attention on the iPad. Apple also could try to curry favor with publishers in a way that matters to consumers, perhaps by securing exclusive titles. Publishers’ relationships with Amazon have been strained by Amazon’s insistence on charging $9.99 for some popular e-books. Publishers have complained that it is an attempt to get consumers used to unsustainably low prices. Amazon takes a loss on some books at that price, and the publishers fear that if the $9.99 tag sticks, Amazon will force publishers to lower their wholesale prices, cutting into their profits. The iPad gives publishers an opportunity for a new pricing model. Some e-books will cost up to $14.99 initially, and Apple is insisting that publishers can’t sell books at a lower price through a competitor. The iBookstore is launching with titles from major publishers such as Penguin, Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Hachette Book Group and Macmillan. One big publisher, Random House, has not yet struck a deal with Apple. Amazon declined to comment on the iPad’s release.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The New Jersey Nets notched their 10th victory Monday night, avoiding any chance of tying for the worst record in NBA history by beating the short-handed San Antonio Spurs 90-84. Brook Lopez had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Nets, who grabbed control with a 15-4 run late in the fourth quarter to improve to 10-64. The 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers, who went 9-73, will remain in the record books as the league’s worst team. Public address announcer Gary Sussman shouted “We got 10! The Nets win!” after New Jersey snapped a 14-game losing streak in the series, committing a franchise record-low four turnovers in beating San Antonio for the first time since the 2003 NBA finals. With Manu Ginobili (lower back spasms) joining Tony Parker on the injured list and Tim Duncan struggling through a poor shooting game, the Spurs had few answers on the second night of a back-to-back following an impressive victory at Boston on Sunday. George Hill scored 19 points and former Net Richard Jefferson finished with 16 after a strong start for the Spurs, who fell out of a sixth-place tie in the Western Conference with Oklahoma City and Portland. New Jersey has been in danger of the worst record ever since opening the season with an NBArecord, 18-game losing streak. But the Nets have now won three of four, taking the pressure off the remainder of their schedule. They were helped Monday when Ginobili, the reigning Western Conference player of the week, had such trouble with his back that he had trouble putting his pants on

Courtney Lee scored 19 points and Devin Harris had 17 points and nine assists for the Nets. Terrence Williams had 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter. The Nets tied it at 72 on Williams’ 3-pointer with 8:13 remaining, but Hill scored before setting up Matt Bonner’s 3 for a 77-72 lead with 6:12 left. New Jersey answered with eight in a row to regain the lead, and after a rare basket by Duncan, Lopez slammed down Harris’ alley-oop pass for an 82-79 edge with 3:27 to play. A free throw by Lopez and a basket by Williams pushed it to 85-79, but San Antonio was back within three after Bonner’s 3-pointer with 34 seconds left. The Spurs got the ball back after Harris’ miss, but Duncan threw away a pass and the Nets closed it out from the foul line. This appeared to be a tough week for New Jersey to get win No. 10, with San Antonio, Phoenix and New Orleans all coming to the Izod Center. But the Spurs who showed up Monday hardly looked like the team that was coming off victories over Cleveland and Boston. Jefferson scored 10 points in the first quarter, when the Spurs shot 54 percent and opened a 33-27 lead. It was ugly from there, as the teams combined for 29 points with neither shooting above 35 percent in the second before San Antonio took a 46-43 lead into halftime. Hill and DeJuan Blair each scored eight in the third — the rest of the Spurs managed only four — and San Antonio was up four heading to the final period.

MIAMI, Florida – Roger Federer had to dig deep to win a pair of tiebreaks but Svetlana Kuznetsova was not so lucky as the women’s top seed was sent crashing out of the ATP and WTA Sony Ericsson Open. Reigning Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon champ Federer swept past France’s Florent Serra 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/3) in a third round match. Serra made top seed Federer work for the win as the Swiss star had his service broken three times and he made two costly double-faults. Federer also committed 35 unforced errors to 32 for Serra. But Federer closed out the win with a service winner as he played well in both tiebreakers on the hardcourts at Crandon Park. “All in all, I’m thrilled to be through,” Federer said. “At the end of the day, that’s what counts.” Watching from the stands on Monday was Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who could meet Federer in Sunday’s final. “It has always been a lot of fun playing against him,” Federer said. “I hope that day is going to come soon again.” Federer won the Key Biscayne title in 2005 and 2006. His 36 career victories in the event is third behind Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. MANCHESTER – Roberto Mancini admits that Manchester City will have to improve considerably to carve out fourth place in the Premier League after an unconvincing performance in their 3-0 victory over Wigan. City had to wait until Wigan had Gary Caldwell sent off to make the breakthrough through Carlos Tevez, who went on to score a 13-minute hat-trick to take his tally to 25 goals for the season. But it was another fitful display as Mancini?s side moved up to fifth in the table, two points adrift of fourth-placed Spurs. They travel to Burnley and host Birmingham before a run of matches against Manchester United, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham before finishing the season at West Ham. Mancini thinks that City have to pick up their performances in their final seven games of the season. He said: “We have seven games. I think that we must fight in every game. The next game will be a tough match but if we want to get fourth we have to fight and play better than against Wigan to have a chance. “We know that we have a good chance to get the fourth position and we know that we must play well and battle with Tottenham and Liverpool. “It?s important that we improve in the next games and important that we win the next games. “Maybe Tottenham will be the game, probably, but before we play Tottenham we play other games, important games. “It?s important that now we must win the next game and the other

games. It will be difficult for us Liverpool and Tottenham but we are ready to fight.” Former Manchester United striker Tevez has now scored 21 goals in his last 19 matches. And former Italy striker Mancini thinks that the Argentina international, 25, will continue to improve. City have won every single Premier League game that Tevez has scored in this season and Mancini joked that he wants that run to continue. He added: “For this I hope that Carlos scores a lot of goals in the next seven games! “I think that now he scored a lot of goals but Tevez was always a good player when he played at Manchester United. “He’s a good player, he?s improved every year and now if he plays near the goal he can score a lot of goals. “He’s a young player but he?s getting better every year.” Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is hoping to appeal against Stuart Attwell?s decision to send off Caldwell. Caldwell appeared to win the ball with one foot before wrapping his other leg around Tevez, who seemed to go in to the challenge with two feet.

The defender’s dismissal proved crucial and Martinez disputed the official?s version of events. He said: “Gary said that he went in really strong and got the ball. As soon as he went in with the challenge, Carlos Tevez saw it and jumped off the ground and he’s the one that left the ground with both feet. “Gary won the ball with one foot as normal and I could understand if you give a free kick depending on what angle you see it. “But to give a red card is really hard to explain. I don?t want to see people sent off. That decision, only the referee saw it. “As a referee, if you don?t see something and you make a mistake because you couldn?t see something, we?re all human beings and we all make mistakes but to give a decision on something that you don?t see, that?s lying, you?re making it up and that?s hard to take.” Wigan remain four points above the relegation zone but Martinez is sure they will stay up. He added: “We haven’t had a lot of luck and we?ve had to work very hard for everything and we just need to keep showing the standards we have shown.” Martinez hopes to have firstchoice goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, who missed the match at Eastlands with a virus, available again for the trip to Fulham on Sunday.

MADRID – Barcelona star Thierry Henry has been confirmed in the squad to face his old club Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday. His fellow France international Eric Abidal was also among the 20 players who will travel to London for the first-leg quarter-final tie, although he “has not yet received the green light from doctors”, the club said on its website Monday. Defender Abidal suffered a leg injury in early February, but trained with his teammates on Monday. Eriksson backs Elephants to leave mark on World Cup Agence France Presse LONDON – Sven-Goran Eriksson has voiced confidence that he can lead Ivory Coast out of the World Cup’s ‘group of death’ and into the knockout stages in South Africa. The 62-year-old was named on Sunday as the Elephants’ coach for the tournament and is relishing the prospect of a first round group that also includes Brazil, Portugal and North Korea. “I am extremely happy and very excited,” said the Swede, who managed England at the 2002 and 2006 World Cup finals. “The Ivory Coast is a good football nation with a lot of good players - it couldn’t be better. “I know it is called the group of death but that just means the challenge is bigger. It will not be easy but I think the Ivory Coast with all their talents can get through it. That’s the first target and we will have to work very hard for it. “England were also in a ‘group of death’ in Japan in 2002 but they qualified and Argentina did not. “This time Brazil are one of the favourites and Portugal are one of the best teams in Europe. “But there are six African countries in the World Cup, it is in Af-

Renault to push harder in races now Australian - Renault boss Eric Boullier thinks that his team can set its sights on pushing even harder in the races now - after Robert Kubica’s breakthrough podium finish in the Australian Grand Prix. Kubica delivered a brilliant performance at Albert Park to hold off race-long pressure from Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa and grab his first podium for his new team.And with the outfit now understanding exactly how quick its car is, and getting a better grip on tyre strategies, Boullier thinks Renault can lift its performance up a gear in future races. “Obviously we knew already that our car has good race pace, and is a consistent one, but it was a question mark about tyre degradation,” Boullier told AUTOSPORT. “Now we know so we can push on with a little bit more.” Boullier believes that the podium finish, which comes after a troubled spell for Renault after the Singapore GP crash scandal and a winter of uncertainty about its future, will help spur team personnel on even more.

“We know our car has the pace to be at least just behind the big top four, so obviously any mess up front we can take the opportunity to score points. “Obviously I am very, very happy with the team at Enstone and ViryChatillon because they did an awesome job during the winter, and it is good to have some points and podiums. The target is done, but it helps morale to be even better.” Reflecting on the importance of the victory after the troubled winter, Boullier said: “Of course it was difficult because they are racer people. “When you don’t have results you are just flat. On top of all of this we had the stories, and the change of control of the company – so as we have been saying for three months, I wanted this team to be head down, working and to do what we know is the best – racing. So to be on the podium is great for them.”

Button keeps expectations in check Jenson Button has warned not to expect McLaren to be as strong as in Australia this weekend, as he reckons the Sepang circuit will not suit his car as well. The world champion is confident, however, that his team will be running near the front. “It was a tremendous achievement to score our first win of the season in Melbourne last week,

ing at or near the front.” Button took his first victory with McLaren after a perfect strategic decision paid off in Melbourne. The McLaren driver believes the competitiveness of each team will already begin to depend on the development rate, despite Malaysia being only the third race of the season. “We’re only two races in, but I think the development race will already be starting to have an influence on performance,” he added. “It’s the rate of improvement that will most influence the battle at the front. “And I’m confident we can deliver in this area: it was something I watched the team doing throughout 2009, and it was one of the key reasons for deciding to hold talks with the team. I’m convinced we have the firepower to develop faster than our key rivals.” Team-mate Lewis Hamilton is optimistic that his car will be stronger in Malaysia than last year, but the Briton admitted he is expecting his team to have problems to match its rivals in qualifying trim. “Sepang has some of the best high-speed corners on the entire calendar. And, this year, I think we’ve got a car that will be far better suited to the circuit than we did last year, so I’m heading to Malaysia optimistic of a good result,” he said. “It’s a fast circuit, that requires a

well-balanced car with a good level of downforce. In some ways, it’s quite similar to Barcelona, where we tested well before the start of the season, so I’m optimistic that we’ll be competitive this weekend. “However, I still think it might be difficult to make up the difference that’s needed in qualifying.

Hopefully, that’s something that we’ll be able to solve as soon as possible. “Last year we saw what could happen here once the weather took over. While I’m hopeful that this year’s race will be run in the dry, you can never discount the threat of rain. Either way, I think we’ll be competitive.”
