Target of seizure cases increasing rapidly in Klungkung Semarapura (Bali Post)—

Seizure cases continue to rise within the jurisdiction of the Klungkung Police. They target the tourist objects frequently visited by the public such as Watu Klotok Beach and hawkers doing their activity since the early day. Last two cases afflicted Nengah Darsana, 20, a resident from Pande Hamlet, Klungkung and AA Sayang Rukmini, 48, a hawker living on Jalan Pudak, Klungkung. Now, police are investigating the case to uncover the perpetrators of the seizures. Information obtained in the field, last Tuesday (Apr 27), revealed that confiscation to Darsana occurred at Watu Klotok Beach at 7:30 pm Local Time. At that time, Darsana was chatting with his girlfriend, Ni Kadek Sri Wulandari. Suddenly, they were visited by an unidentified male in security guard uniform. The man immediately examined the contents of wallet and the whole body of Darsana and Sri Wulandari. After that, the man was also examining the victim’s handphone of type N78. Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika was furious with the news regarding to film or video about the gigolo in Bali. The movie was given the label ‘Cowboy in Paradise.’ It was considered illegal and damaging the image of Bali as a tourist destination. “If the movie is true, I am very concerned. Therefore, we will take measures,” said Mangku Pastika when answering questions from journalists after attending a plenary session of the Bali House at Renon, last Tuesday (Apr 27). Hospital. “Last Monday (Apr 26), I was called by Director of Karangasem Hospital, I Gede Parwata Yasa and said there were 50 vials of anti-rabies vaccine, but today (Tuesday—ed) it has run out. Parwata Yasa advised that to get the anti-rabies vaccine more quickly patients should go directly to Sanglah Hospital because the stock in Karangasem has run out. Otherwise, patients could wait for the supply from Bali Health Services. As it has been known within the past five years, the HIV and AIDS cases in Bali continued to soar sharply. In 2004, there were totally 590 cases and in 2006 were recorded 1,253 cases. Based on data from the Bali Health Services as of April 2010, the figure rose to 3,390 cases (1,635 HIV cases and 1,755 AIDS cases). From these figures, 73 percent was transmitted sexually, 22

percent through drug injection and 2.2 percent transmission from mother to infant. Meanwhile, the majority of AIDS victims in Bali belonged to productive age, namely between 15-49 years. Prevalence of the infection through heterosexual contact in the year 2003 was only 3 percent and then increased to 20 percent in 2009. “The process of HIV transmission previously only occurred to high risk groups including sex workers and their clients and drug users by injection, but now it has shifted to the general public, including household mothers and new born babies,” said Yahya. As consequence, there were more and more Balinese residents who died from AIDS. For that purpose, it is required the readiness of Customary Villages to provide information about AIDS to residents. Other than regarding to refusal of some residents to bathe the body of people with HIV/AIDS, according to Yahya, the KPA Bali had also been working with customary villages to provide socialization about it. “Corpse cleansing treatment to HIV/AIDS sufferer is basically the same as other bodies. Pakistan’s Musharraf to form political party “I have formally applied for a new political party called All Pakistan Muslim League. Pervez Musharraf is the head of this party and we will formally announce it after getting registered,” he told AFP. Saif, an unofficial spokesman for Musharraf, is active in organising the new political party and said the former president had told him in London that he intended to return to Pakistan and fight a criminal case.

Pakistan’s former military ruler Pervez Musharraf is planning to launch a political party in a comeback bid two years after he was unseated in elections, officials said Wednesday. Musharraf, who has been abroad since leaving office after nine years in power, could face trial if he returns home and is wanted for questioning by the current government over the assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto. An aide and election official confirmed to AFP that the retired general has applied to register a new political party with the electoral authorities in the Pakistani capital Islamabad. Mohammad Ali Saif, a former cabinet minister and now a Musharraf legal adviser, said election authorities would hear the application on May 10.

Pakistan police registered a case against Musharraf in August, a precursor to potentially putting the expresident on trial for detaining judges in 2007 as he attempted to cling onto power. Musharraf imposed a state of emergency and sacked about 60 judges in November 2007 when the supreme court appeared poised to declare him ineligible to contest a presidential election while in military uniform. “I am in Punjab to establish our party structure here. We will establish it across Pakistan. I can see a bright future for Musharraf in Pakistan,” Saif told AFP. Sabir Hussain Gilani, a spokesman for the election commission of Pakistan, confirmed that the body had received the application. “They want to register their party as All Pakistan Muslim League but there are two more applications wanting the same name,” he said. The chief election commissioner has issued notices to all the applicants and will decide on their application next month, the spokesman added.

India arrests diplomat for spying for Pakistan NEW DELHI – India is investigating a serious breach of security after arresting a female diplomat accused of spying for Pakistan while posted at the Indian Embassy in Islamabad, India’s foreign minister said Wednesday. Madhuri Gupta, 53, a second secretary at the embassy, was recalled to New Delhi and arrested at her home in the Indian capital. Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna told NDTV news channel that the charges against Gupta were serious and that the case was being investigated by the Home Affairs Ministry. The suspect is accused of passing information to Pakistani intelligence agencies, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said. Both Krishna and Prakash were in Thimphu, Bhutan, for a summit of the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation or SAARC, which comprises India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan,

Nepal, Afghanistan, the Maldives and Bangladesh. Gupta, who had been working in the press and information section of the embassy for three years, had been under surveillance for more than six months. Investigations were under way and the official was cooperating, Prakash said. He gave no other details and did not take any questions from reporters. Gupta was arrested Friday, although the arrest was not announced until Tuesday, Press Trust of India news agency said. She will remain in police custody for the next four days, PTI said. India and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence from Britain in 1947. Relations between the two South Asian rivals have been further strained since a deadly terror attack on Mumbai, India’s financial hub, in 2008 killed 166 people. An anti-government protester arranges barbed wires to protect themselves from government soldiers

Thai authorities fire at protesters near capital BANGKOK – Thai security forces and anti-government protesters clashed Wednesday on the outskirts of Bangkok, with troops firing both over and then directly into a crowd of Red Shirts to keep them from expanding their demonstrations. It was not immediately clear if the troops were shooting live ammunition or rubber bullets or how many people were wounded in the confrontation along a major road connecting Bangkok with its northern suburbs. A nearby hospital said people injured in the clash were brought in for treatment but it did not have an immediate tally. The Red Shirts, who have paralyzed parts of the capital with protests for weeks in their campaign to bring down a government they view as illegitimate, had announced that they were widening their demonstrations and dared the military to stop them as hundreds headed on motorbikes and pickup trucks to a planned rally in a suburb of the capital. The shooting Wednesday raised concerns that more violence was to come after government warnings that patience was running out in the seven-week standoff. Army spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said that troops were told to use rubber bullets but had authority to use live ammunition for self-defense. “At this point, there is too much chaos for anybody to constantly report what kind bullets they are using,” he said. “We brought force out to stop them. At this point, society finds it unacceptable to have protesters traveling in a motorcade like this,” Sansern said. “We try our best to prevent losses.” The clash occurred at a section

of Vibhavadi-Rangsit road, on the northern outskirts of Bangkok, that security forces had blocked with razor wire. The traffic jam is mostly because the restaurants, shops, and other business don’t have special parking lot for their customers so the roads is being used to park cars or even buses. The drivers of the public transport often pick up or drop their passengers anywhere especially in front of markets. Based on the data for the authorized officer, every day there are 30 buses transit or coming to Ubud and it cause traffic jam. Currently, the traffic jam is not too severe and still can be handled by the police but if there is no action on it then the traffic jam will cause many

Ubud is one of the famous tourism sites in Bali so it must be developed properly. The short term solution is to use the Ubud field as a parking lot to accommodate all cars and buses in Ubud and the field it self will be relocated to other area. SYDNEY (AFP) – A 10-year-old Australian girl who survived being stung by the world’s most venomous creature, the deadly box jellyfish, may have rewritten medical history, an expert said Tuesday. Schoolgirl Rachael Shardlow lost consciousness after being badly stung by the jellyfish while swimming in a river in eastern Queensland state with her brother in December, but lived to tell the tale. “When I first saw the pictures of the injuries I just went, ‘you know to be honest, this kid should not be alive’,” said Jamie Seymour, professor of zoology and tropical ecology at James Cook University. “I mean they are horrific. Usually when you see people who have been stung by box jellyfish with that number of the tentacle contacts on their body, it’s usually in a morgue,” he told public broadcaster, the ABC. Often deadly, the box jellyfish has long, trailing tentacles and is able to squeeze through even the

smallest of nets as it is only the size of a fingernail. The venom is so overpoweringly painful that victims often go in shock and drown or die of heart failure before reaching shore. There is no effective antivenom for its sting, which attacks the heart, nervous system and skin, inducing shooting muscle pain, vomiting and a rapid rise in blood pressure. Rachael was pulled from the Calliope River, near the town of Gladstone, by her 13-year-old brother with the jellyfish’s tentacles wrapped around her legs. Before passing out, she told him could not see or breathe. After the rescue, she spent six weeks recovering in hospital before returning home. “I don’t know of anybody in the entire literature where we’ve stud-

ied this where someone has had such an extensive sting that has survived,” said Professor Seymour, adding that scientists were keen to monitor her recovery. “From our point of view it’s really useful information that you very seldom, if ever, get your hands on.” The young girl’s father, Geoff Shardlow, told the ABC that his daughter had suffered scarring to her legs and some short-term memory loss. “We’ve noticed a small amount of short-term memory loss, like riding a pushbike to school and forgetting she’s taken a pushbike,” he said. “The greatest fear was actual brain damage (but) her cognitive skills and memory tests were all fine.”

Anti-graft body to grill VP on Thursday Antara

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has set a schedule to question former Bank Indonesia (BI) governor Boediono, who is now vice president and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati on Thursday. KPK Deputy Chief Muhammad Jasin said here on Wednesday that based on the request of Boediono and Sri Mulyani, they would be examined in their respective offices. “The vice president’s secretary has sent a letter to us to inform that the vice president has tight schedules so that he asked the KPK to carry out the examination at his office,” Jasin said. Jasin made the remarks on the sidelines of a hearing with the House Commission III on legal affairs at the parliament building. He said that Finance Minister Mulyani also had just returned from an overseas trip and still had many activities so that she also asked the examination should be

carried out at her office. Jasin said that KPK’s standard operating procedures allowed any examination to be conducted outside the KPK office so that the KPK leadership decided to carry out the questioning at the vice presidential and finance ministerial offices. He said that the leadership of KPK adopted the flexible attitude owing to the fact that the two state officials had very tight schedules. Jasin said that though the KPK had set Thursday for the questioning, it still had to confirm it in case it still needed to be changed. Boediono and Mulyani will be questioned in their capacity as witnesses in the Bank Century bailout case involving Rp6.7 trillion.

JAKARTA - Thirty three legislators have signed a letter of guarantee for the police to suspend the detention of Mukhamad Misbahkun, a suspect in a case of forgery of documents to apply for a Letter of Credit (L/C). “This is a form of solidarity and togetherness of members of the House of Representatives (DPR),” the suspect’s lawyer, Luhut Simanjuntak, told newsmen here Tuesday evening. The lawmakers who signed the letter of guarantee were not only from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) faction where Misbahkun also came from, but also those of other party factions, he said. The signed letter of guarantee would soon be handed over to the police investigators, he said. Meanwhile, a day after his arrest, PKS President Luthfi Hasan Ishaq and several members of the PKS executive board visited Misbahkun at the police detention center here. He said Misbahkun’s health condition remained normal during his questioning. Besides Ishaq, seven other PKS legislators had also visited him on Tuesday. Nasir Jamil, member of PKS faction, said Misbahkun’s arrest showed the police were unprofes-

sional because the police investigators just relied their reasons on Robert Tantular and Frengky Ongko’s sided confessions. Both Tantular and Ongko were also detained in the case. Misbahkun was questioned for the case of forgery of documents to apply for a letter of credit on Monday. According to National Police deputy spokesman Senior Commissioner Zainuri Lubis, this was the first questioning of Misbahkun as a suspect. Luhut Simanjuntak earlier said that his client’s L/Cs were not fictitious as they had been disbursed by Bank Century. “Moreover credits had also been restructured. This means that the L/Cs is not fictitious. The credits will not be restructured if the L/Cs is fictitious,” he said. Last week Misbahkun was questioned as a witness for another suspect now held by the police. Misbahkun is the owner and a majority shareholder of PT Selalang Prima International while the company’s president director, Frenky Ongko, has been named suspect and held for allegedly forging business contract when applying for L/C to Bank Century. Police said the business contract was made after the L/C was approved while it should have been made before the approval of the L/C.

JAKARTA - Millions of women employed as domestic workers in Indonesia have no labour rights and run the risk of serious abuse and even death as they do their jobs, Amnesty International said Wednesday. Parliament is scheduled to pass a domestic workers protection law this year and Amnesty urged lawmakers to ensure the legislation guarantees domestic workers’ rights in line with international standards.

“They experience economic exploitation and physical, psychological and sexual violence on a regular basis. Some are even killed,” Amnesty said in a statement. “They are particularly vulnerable to abuse and exploitation due to the lack of legal protection of their rights; because their work takes place out of the public eye; and due to their low status in society.” It said an estimated 2.6 million women and girl domestic workers, such as maids and nannies, had no protection under existing labour laws

such as the 2003 Manpower Act. “The result is that women and girl domestic workers live and work in abusive conditions,” it said. “Amnesty International urges the Indonesian parliament to acknowledge that, like every other human being, domestic workers have rights,” the London-based group said. The Domestic Workers Advocacy Network has called for a nationwide strike by domestic workers on May 1-3 to highlight the need for new legislation.

him as he was proven to be guilty in hiding Syaifudin Zuhri and Ibrohim,” Bambang said. Syaifudin Zuhri, the alleged operational commander of the hotel attacks, was killed by police in October. Ibrohim, one of Zuhri’s accomplices, was killed in Central Java last year. Police investigating the July 17 bombings on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels, in which nine people died, arrested Susanto in Central Java in August.

Noordin Mohammed Top, the leader of a splinter faction of the Jemaah Islamiyah terror network and alleged masterminded the twin attacks, was killed during a raid on a house on the outskirts of Solo, Central Java, in September. DENPASAR - The government has decided not to include Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport in a program to meet the requirements for ICAO Council membership although 5,000 to 6,000 foreign tourists arrive there every day. “One of the five airports that we have included in the program namely Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport has already been fully operational 24 hours while four others namely airports in Medan (North Sumatra), Balikpapan (East Kalimantan), Makassar (South Sulawesi) and Surabaya (East Java) will soon be opened for 24 hours,” Transport Minister Freddy Numberi said on Tuesday on the sidelines of a meeting of the steering committee for the 7th Cooperative Aviation Security Program Asia Pacific (CASP-AP). He said the government would operate at least five international airports 24 hours everyday to meet the requirements for the International Civil Aviation Organization Council membership. Freddy flanked by ICAO regional representative in Bangkok, Mochtar Awan, said so far only SoekarnoHatta that had been operating fully for 24 hours serving all incoming flights. Ngurah Rai is not included for fear too many flights will be arriving there, he said. “If that happens it is feared it will hurt domestic flights. That is what we are anticipating against,” he said.

Ngurah Rai has actually been operating for 24 hours so far although it has not serving non-stop as latest regular flights arrive at between 2am and 3am and early afterwards it already starts serving flights, an airport source said. Another reason for not including Ngurah Rai in the program is that it has to be totally closed once a year to respect Hindu’s Seclusion Day. Freddy said the requirement for a 24-hour service is related to security namely to make it easy for planes forced to land to nearby airport during emergency. “The requirement is needed for planes during emergency besides for international flights to enter Indonesia,” he said. Although airports in Makassar, Medan, Balikpapan and Surabaya will soon be opened 24 hours it does not mean they will operate non-stop meaning day and night serving flights but only that they will be ready in case they are needed. Freddy said the 24-hour opening of the airports would increase incoming flights and therefore national airlines are worried they will lose passengers. He said it was not impossible that it would happen as international air-

lines would compete to offer cheaper fares. “In view of that not all our 26 airports are opened for 24 hours,” he said. Freddy said the government hoped Indonesia’s wish to become ICAO Council member could be realized in 2013. By becoming an ICAO Council member Indonesia would have a bargaining power and be able to participate in international flight policy making. Mokhtar Awan meanwhile said that flight security system in Asia Pacific has been relatively good. The two-day meeting discussed flight security system program for Asia Pacific and “the needs of members in the CASP-AP cooperation for the application of Annex 17 on Security and Annex 9 on Facilities,” he said. The meeting was attended by delegations from CASP-AP member countries such as Indonesia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Macao, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore and Timor Leste. Representatives from China, the US, New Zealand, Britain and Papua New Guinea attended but not as members.

The former Indonesian Environment Minister also said that it is very difficult for the investors to make use of the geothermal energy and conserve the environment. Indonesia developed only 4% of its geothermal energy and most of them is located in mountain range where it had very limited access. Rachmat Witoelar said that in utilizing the geothermal energy, the environment also must be in the consideration. “The theory is not ultimate but the spirit must be owned by everyone who wanted to make use of the energy. We shouldn’t destroy what God had given us

but we also want to have electricity,” he added. From the technology point of view, the machine needed to utilize the energy is not too big so it doesn’t need large area. However, the main problem is in the process of opening the land to place the machine. “We cut the trees here and there but should we do that? We must love the plan and animal too. We need rules and regulation for these things,” he added. Indonesia has enormous geothermal energy, up to 28,000 megawatts but Indonesia only utilize 4% of the power. The President has urged the ministers to increase the development of the geothermal energy. In his speech during the opening ceremony of The World Geothermal Congress, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, stated that in the next five years, Indonesia must make use of 17% of the geothermal energy. The energy is environmental friendly and the cost is very low. One of the mechanisms to control the utilization of the energy is the clean development mechanism which is also supported by the government.

BUSINESS EU president wants closer Japan ties, freer trade Agence France-Presse

TOKYO - European Union president Herman Van Rompuy on Wednesday called for closer ties with Japan in fields from climate change to aid for Afghanistan but said differences remain over trade. Speaking ahead of an annual summit in Tokyo between the 27-nation bloc and Asia’s biggest economy, Van Rompuy said “we would be stronger in facing the challenges of a changing world if we work together”. He called for closer cooperation between Brussels and Tokyo on fighting climate change, poverty, terrorism and piracy and promoting global economic stability, nuclear non-proliferation and human rights. “To share the burden and to lead the way, we need to team up with each other. I believe the EU and Japan, with their combined economic and political strengths, can help make a difference in an increasingly globalised world,” Van Rompuy said. He highlighted international network security and the threat of attacks on “the free flow of goods, people and information. The networks are vulnerable, cyber attacks are no fantasy, they can happen and do harm everyday.” “We must enhance our resilience against these. Both Japan and Europe are so deeply in global networks that we must do this together.” Japan’s centre-left Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, who took power in September, was due to meet the visiting EU leaders, also including EU commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso, in Tokyo.

Talks were also expected to focus on the Greek debt crisis, which was roiling Asian financial markets Wednesday, with Van Rompuy using his news briefing to announce a May 10 eurozone summit in Brussels. Little progress was expected between the EU and Japan on trade issues, however, given wide differences on questions of access to each other’s markets. The two sides were unlikely even to agree to launch a joint study group on moving towards a free trade agreement of the kind the EU struck last year with Japan’s high-tech export rival South Korea. Van Rompuy said: “Of course, an obvious way to intensify the trade between our two blocs would be a free trade agreement.” But he said that “many of the socalled non-tariff barriers to trade remain in place, which hamper access to the Japanese market and cause hesitance from the EU side to go ahead.” “We could perhaps take some more time to first identify the objectives both parties want to reach. We are open to discussions,” the EU president said at the Japan Press Club. The EU has demanded Japan first do more to reduce non-tariff barriers, including in product safety and government procurement rules.

Toshiro Tanaka, professor of European politics at Keio University, said that “despite the EU’s rhetoric that the Japanese market is closed with non-tariff barriers, the EU is reluctant to sign a free trade deal with Japan, whereas Japan, backed by its business community, craves a deal with the EU.” Tanaka said the free trade deal signed between the EU and South Korea last October sparked Japanese interest in a similar agreement. “Currently the EU impose 10 percent tariff duties on imports of vehicles and 14 percent on electronics, but South Korean companies such as Samsung, LG and Hyundai Motor will be eventually exempt from those tariffs. “That’s significantly disadvantageous for Japanese manufacturers in selling goods in the European market,” Tanaka told AFP. The 19th EU-Japan summit kicks off at 0830 GMT, ending with a news conference by Hatoyama, Barroso and Van Rompuy from 1015 GMT. Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada also met EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton before he was due to fly to Africa later in the day. BEIJING - China’s moves to rein in soaring real estate prices appear to be cooling demand in the red-hot sector, reducing the risk of the market overheating and derailing the booming economy, analysts say. In the past two weeks, the government has introduced a range of measures aimed at curbing rampant speculation and spiralling prices, but analysts warn the rules can be skirted easily by buyers looking to make a fast buck. “The overall effect of these rules is to send a clear signal — the State Council (cabinet) is serious about deflating the housing bubble,” said Stephen Green, head of China research at Standard Chartered Bank. “By pricking a land and property bubble in several major cities, the State Council has decided to endure some shortterm pain for long-term gain.” Beijing has tightened restrictions on advance sales of new property developments, introduced new curbs on loans for third home purchases and raised minimum downpayments for second homes. to clamp down on bad loans. This week, state media said China was likely to introduce a property tax on residential housing in the first half of the year on a trial basis in Beijing, Shanghai, the southwestern area of Chongqing and the southern city of Shenzhen. The moves highlight the growing concern in China about the threat of rising bad debts from a US-style property bubble, which authorities fear could derail the rapid-fire growth of the world’s third-largest economy. “The government is sending out signals that it is not going to keep this party going and that has made people more cautious,” said Patrick Chovanec, an economics professor at Tsinghua University. Prices in major cities rose 11.7 percent year-on-year last month, the fastest pace since a nationwide survey was widened to 70 cities in July 2005, official data show. At the Beijing Real Estate Expo earlier this month, the average price of a new apartment in the Chinese capital was 21,164 yuan (3,100 dollars) per square metre, double that of last year, state media said. Marilyn Monroe writings to be released this fall

Musings about life, literature and other rarely seen writings by Marilyn Monroe will be published this fall. Farrar, Straus & Giroux announced Tuesday that “Fragments” would come out in October. Editor Courtney Hodell said the book would include poems, photographs, reflections on third husband Arthur Miller and other men in Monroe’s life, and references to works by Samuel Beckett, James Joyce and numerous other authors. “I think the book will show that she was a really thoughtful person

with a real interior life,” Hodell said. “She was a great reader and someone with real writing flair. There are fragments of poetry that are really quite beautiful, lines that stop you in your tracks.” The book features a long essay about Monroe’s first husband, James Dougherty; notes about acting and the roles she was working on; lists of resolutions and a letter to acting coach Lee Strasberg. Monroe wrote on everything from spiral bound notebooks to stationery from the Waldorf Astoria. The writings date from 1943, when Monroe was a teenager, to near the end of her life. Monroe was found dead in her Los Angeles home in 1962 at age 36, her death ruled a probable suicide, although theories of murder have proliferated. Hodell said there were passages by Monroe that “make her seem suicidal,” but declined to say what years the passages were written. Hodell also declined to say whether Monroe referred to Joe DiMaggio, her second of three husbands, or President John F. Kennedy, with whom she was widely rumored to have had an affair. But Hodell did say that “there’s stuff about all of her relationships here.” The book was commissioned by Anna Strasberg, who manages Monroe’s estate and is Lee Strasberg’s widow.

Tests shed light on condition of Bret Michaels An already ailing Bret Michaels has been diagnosed with another medical malady. After suffering a brain hemorrhage last week, the audacious 47-year-old glam-rock reality TV star has developed a side effect that causes seizures, according to a statement posted Tuesday on the former Poison frontman’s website. The condition, called hyponatremia, stems from a lack of sodium. The statement did not indicate if Michaels had actually suffered any seizures. Michaels was conscious and in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit of an undisclosed hospital. The statement said he was remaining positive and responding well to tests and treatments. “Even though today was a minor setback, doctors remain hopeful for a full recovery and plan to release more specific information next Monday,” it said. Michaels, a contestant on “The Celebrity Apprentice,” suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which causes bleeding in the fluid-filled spaces around the base of the brain. SPOKANE, Wash. – Two living specimens of the fabled giant Palouse earthworm have been captured for the first time in two decades in what represents a significant discovery of a creature that has achieved a mythic status in the area. The giant Palouse earthworm has fascinated scientists for decades after long being written off as an extinct creature. Reports suggested that the worms had a penchant for spitting and smelled like lilies, further enhancing the myth of the earthworm in the agricultural Palouse region on the Washington-Idaho border. “It’s a good day for the worm,” said University of Idaho soil scientist Jodi Johnson-Maynard in Moscow, Idaho, who has been leading the search. The recent discovery of the worms appeared to dispel the myth about the creature’s appearance. They don’t spit, or smell like lilies, and aren’t even that giant. “One of my colleagues suggested we rename it the ‘larger-than average Palouse earthworm,’” Johnson-Maynard said when the find was announced Tuesday. While they had been thought to grow to 3 feet long, the adult worm measured about 10 or 12 inches fully extended, while the juvenile was 6 or 7 inches. The worms were translucent, allowing internal organs to appear. They had pink heads and bulbous tails. The adult had a yellowish band behind the head. The specimens were found March 27 by Shan Xu, an Idaho student, and Karl Umiker, a research support scientist. They also found three earthworm cocoons, two of which have hatched and appear to also be giant Palouse earthworms.

The Palouse earthworm was first reported to the scientific world in an 1897 article in The American Naturalist by Frank Smith. Smith’s work was based on four samples sent to him by R.W. Doane of Washington State University in Pullman. Massive agricultural development soon consumed nearly all of the unique Palouse Prairie — a seemingly endless ocean of steep, silty dunes — and appeared to deal a fatal blow to the worm. In the late 1980s, University of Idaho scientist James Johnson found two worms in a second-growth forest near Moscow. They were the last living specimens found until now. The worms were considered extinct until 2005, when Idaho graduate student Yaniria Sanchez-de Leon found a specimen near Albion, Wash. But that worm had been cut nearly in half as she was digging a hole. After the 2005 discovery, conservation groups petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the worm as an endangered species, citing as proof the lack of sightings. Last month’s discoveries followed the development of a new high-tech worm shocking probe that was stuck in the ground and used electricity to push worms toward the surface. The probe was deployed starting last summer, and proved far less lethal to worms than sticking shovels into the ground to dig them up, JohnsonMaynard said. The adult was killed so that University of Kansas earthworm expert Sam James could dissect it identify and it as a GPE. James made that determination on April 16. The juvenile remains alive at the University of Idaho, where its DNA will be used to identify new specimens.

The moon’s orientation to the sun keeps the bottoms of polar craters in permanent shadow, allowing temperatures there to plunge below minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 240 degrees Celsius), cold enough to store volatile material like water for billions of years. “However, our research suggests that, in addition to the wicked cold, explorers and robots at the bottoms of polar lunar craters may have to contend with a complex electrical environment as well, which can affect surface chemistry, static discharge, and dust cling,” said William Farrell of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., the lead author of the study. These new observations contribute

to our evolving understanding of the moon, said Gregory Schmidt, deputy director of the NASA Lunar Science Institute at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. “This important work by Dr. Farrell and his team is further evidence that our view on the moon has changed dramatically in recent years,” Schmidt said. “It has a dynamic and fascinating environment that we are only beginning to understand.” Solar wind is a thin stream of electrified components of atoms – negatively charged electrons and positively charged ions – that constantly blows from the surface of the sun into space. Since the moon is only slightly tilted compared to the sun, the solar wind flows almost horizontally over the lunar surface at the poles, and along the region of the moon called the terminator, where day transitions to night. The researchers discovered that in some ways, solar wind behaves like wind on Earth – flowing into deep polar valleys and crater floors. But, unlike wind on Earth, the dual electron-ion composition of the so-

lar wind may create an unusual electric charge on the side of the mountain or crater wall; that is, on the inside of the rim directly below the solar wind flow. As solar wind flows into craters, it can erode the surface, which affects recently discovered water molecules. Static discharge could disturb sensitive equipment, while the sticky and extremely abrasive lunar dust could wear out spacesuits and may even be hazardous if tracked inside spacecraft and inhaled by astronauts over long periods of time. Since electrons are over 1,000 times lighter than ions, these lighter electrons in the solar wind rush into a lunar crater ahead of the heavier ions, creating a negatively-charged region within the crater. The ions eventually fill the crater, but at consistently lower concentrations than that of the electrons. This imbalance in the crater makes the inside walls and floor acquire a negative electric charge. The researchers calculated that the electron/ion separation effect is most extreme on a crater’s leeward edge – along the inside crater wall and at the crater floor nearest the solar wind flow.

Gulbis stuns Federer as Djokovic cruises Agence France - Presse

ROME – Latvia’s unseeded Ernests Gulbis stunned an out-of-sorts world number one Roger Federer 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 to reach the third round of the ATP Rome Masters 1000 at the Foro Italico here on Tuesday. In a match littered with unforced errors — Gulbis edged the top seed 39-38 on that score — the Swiss maestro looked a shadow of his normal self as his game collapsed following a typically dominant opening set. The 21-year-old Gulbis could barely hide his delight at such an unexpected victory. “It’s incredible, I was shocked after the match, it’s a great feeling: indescribable,” he said. When the Wimbledon and French Open champion raced through the first set, breaking in the first and seventh games, there was no way of predicting what was to follow: steadily his game crumbled. But Federer, who was making his debut in the clay season, insisted he was not too concerned by the loss. “I’m not worried, more curious to see how it next goes (in Estoril). In the next game Gulbis had four more match points on his serve but seemed to choke as he hit two double faults and went long off both flanks. He then missed a smash and went wide with an inside out forehand to allow the world number one to break back. And he admitted that he had cracked. “I couldn’t hit my serves in, I didn’t know what to do, I was shocked, it was a terrible feeling.” But four more unforced errors from Federer saw Gulbis serve for the match for a second time and he made no mistake, courtesy of two more Federer unforced errors. While both players made a flurry of mistakes, the big difference was in winners where Gulbis hit 33 to Federer’s 20. The defeat continued Federer’s poor record here where he has reached the last four or better only three times in

10 attempts. Earlier, world number two Novak Djokovic was barely stretched as he crushed Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-1. Djokovic showed no signs of the service problems he’d suffered recently as he claimed victory in five seconds under the hour. It was the 22year-old Serbian’s fourth win in four meetings with the Frenchman, one year his senior, who has yet to take a set off Djokovic. And the second seed was quite happy to get this second round match out of the way quickly. “The sooner you finish the happier you are. I’ve played in this tournament many times so you don’t need many hours to get used to the court,” he said. “I’ve been here practising five or six days so I was already used to the courts and wanted to finish as quickly as possible.” The 2008 champion here and finalist last year is playing in only his second clay court event of the season having reached the semi-finals in Monte Carlo two weeks ago. MADRID – Real Madrid’s Brazilian star Kaka said he was unhappy with his performances since arriving last summer, but blamed injuries for his lack of form. “I’m not happy with my performances, but it’s all physical. I suffered a lot since I got injured,” he said. “When I’m good physically, my performance will improve, I’ll be happy and the fans too,” he told a news conference on Tuesday. The midfielder has found goals hard to come by since arriving from AC Milan last summer for 65 million euros and has been accused of failing to replicate the form that made him the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2007. City are firmly in the hunt for a Champions League spot but their challenge could be damaged after they were left without an experienced senior goalkeeper when Given dislocated his shoulder in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Arsenal. Joe Hart is currently on loan at Birmingham and Stuart Taylor is on his way back from a knee injury, leaving the Faroe Islands’ Gunnar Nielsen as the squad’s only fit keeper. Reports on Tuesday claimed City are attempting to recall Hart from his spell, but,

Raikkonen boosted by Turkey result Kimi Raikkonen believes his fifth place in the Rally of Turkey a week ago will help as he strives to improve his competitiveness in the World Rally Championship. He was one of few drivers not to crash or puncture a tyre on the harsh, rocky stages in Turkey and recorded his highest finish so far. “It’s a sign that we’re going in the right direction,” said Raikkonen. “In Jordan the speed was not so good but we finished the rally; in Turkey it was bit better and we finished fifth. “In fact, we did not do anything that was very different: it was just a question of having more time in the car and working with the pace notes. In some places I felt confident, in others less confident. But for sure, a result like this helps.” Raikkonen will miss the next event in New Zealand, even though his Citroen Junior team-mate Sebastien Ogier is now entered for it. But Raikkonen is hoping for another test in the C4 ahead of his next rally, in Portugal at the end of May. Manwhile Sebastien Loeb stretched his winning run to a third straight rally victory as he took an ultimately-comfortable first place in Turkey. The world champion hit the front when Citroen Junior driver Sebastien Ogier fell back with a tyre problem on Saturday afternoon, and then escaped from the pack today. Petter Solberg and Mikko Hirvonen both hoped they could keep the pressure on Loeb this morning, but were left short of time to do so when two stages were cancelled due to poor road conditions after overnight downpours and then cost themselves time with mistakes. dan, with the leaders preferring to push and try to win from the front rather than slowing to force rivals to run first on the dusty roads. Loeb was pleased he had been able to win in this manner - although he said the likelihood of rain this morning made the decision easier. “We decided to stay first on the road and it was a good choice,” said Loeb. “We maybe expected rain, and I knew if I lifted off [on Saturday] and it rained, I was finished. I knew if it didn’t rain, maybe I could keep my lead.” After a scare when he went off and brushed a tree on the first stage out of service this afternoon while trying to chase down Loeb, Solberg eased off and made sure of second place. “It looked good for a while, but they cancelled a lot of stages today,” he said. “I tried this morning but was very calm this afternoon. After I hit the tree, I thought ‘okay, forget this.’” Hirvonen also had a fright today, hitting a rock this morning and picking up a puncture. That dropped him to fourth behind Dani Sordo, but he regained a podium place when the Citroen slid off, clipped a tree and broke its suspension with two stages to go. “I started this morning hoping we could fight for second or even the win,” Hirvonen said. “We gave it everything, it went wrong and I lost my position, but now we’re here [in third] again, so it’s okay. But Sebastien is getting away again in the championship. I have to push harder in the next one.”

Liuzzi: Force India now a big team Force India has shaken off its old mantle as one of Formula 1’s small teams on the back of its strong start to the 2010 season, reckons driver Vitantonio Liuzzi. The Silverstone-based outfit has scored points in three of the first four races of the year and, with strong qualifying performances too, Liuzzi believes the outfit has hit the kind of form it needs to threaten more established outfits. “When you start having results and you start scoring points then you feel much stronger,” said Liuzzi. “You feel better because you see your efforts have paid off. And also it is good because it’s not just your confidence that goes up, the team confidence goes up too. That is an important thing, especially for a team like our one. We are doing big things, we are scoring points consistently and we have

shown that we are no longer a small team. These things keep you alive, keep you believing and keep you moving forward.” Liuzzi thinks the fact that Force India has moved forward from its promising end to 2009 is evidence of how strong the team has become, but he equally knows that there remains a big challenge in keeping the improvements going. “Even last year I was saying that Force India will surprise some people, because it has a really strong group of people. There are really great people working there, great technical people, great mechanics, and everyone is working really well together. It is the best team I’ve ever worked with in my short career.” “It shows that the performance we are having this year is not the result of luck, but we also know we could be much faster. We are at the

moment achieving our target where we want to be, but we need to push hard because the other teams are not sleeping and the development after Barcelona will be crucial for the remaining part of the season.” And on the back of recent comments from Robert Kubica suggesting that Renault needed to keep a watching eye over Force India’s pace, Liuzzi knows how serious his team’s rivals are treating the outfit. “With Robert we are really good friends, we speak after every race and we always believe we are competitors for them and they are competitors for us,” he said. “We are pushing like hell to develop, because we think we can get good results in the remaining part of the season as well. It is nice to hear that they are looking at us and also nice that other teams are looking at us too. It shows we are no longer a backmarker team.”
