Denpasar’s Billboard Being Criticize through Facebook Denpasar (Bali Post) –
The existence of social network such as e-mail, facebook, and other is currently being use by Denpasar people to criticize the government. In one of the facebook belong to Widnyana Sudibya, an inhabitant of Denpasar, a comment about a billboard in the city. He said that the billboard which is placed on Tamrin Street is inappropriate because the background is using a place from other regency. On the billboard that says “Create Denpasar as the Cultural City”, there is a picture of Balinese Dancer in Taman Gili, Kerthagosa which is actually a historical monument in Klungkung regency. This is the one complained by Sudibya. “Dempasar has many architectures that are very beautiful and attractive but why the government is using Taman Gili in Klungkung? Are they wanted to follow Malaysia? They must consider many things before publishing something.” Many similar comments can be seen on facebook. Reconstruction of Murder to Japanese Citizen
After Spat, Suspect Stabs the Victim Denpasar (Bali Post)—
To complete the relevant files concerning with the murder case of Hiromi Shimada, 41, from Japan, investigators of Denpasar Metro Police performed a reconstruction on crime scene, on Jalan Sadasari No.17 Kuta, Badung, last Monday (Jan 25). In the reconstruction, two suspects were presented consisting of Mawardi alias Anto, 31, a resident from East Lombok, and Abdurahman alias Abdu , 20, a resident from
Jember, East Java. The reconstruction held by investigators started at 7:00 pm until 10:30 pm Local Time. There were 59 scenes exhibited by both suspects when killing the victim to death. Out of several scenes, it was showed that Anto crazed after the victim spat at him. He immediately stabbed the victim with a knife and killed horribly. Before being stabbed, the suspect saw the victim’s bathroom with the door open. Meanwhile, the desire of second suspect to rape victim even arose. Right
away, they entered into the victim’s bathroom and then tried to rape her. However, the victim refused resulting in resistance and disastrous murder began. Because of that resistance, the two suspects covered the victim. Mouth, hands and feet of victim were tied. Suspect Anto then sat on the victim while pinching the victim’s forbidden zone. “I was drunk. Therefore, I groped the victim’s vagina,” said the suspect after the reconstruction. When the suspect’s libido arose, bonds of victim’s mouth
were opened. However, after releasing it, she immediately exuded saliva and it affected the face of suspect Anto. Shocked by a blast of such spit, the suspect Anto immediately stabbed the victim to death. Both suspects were immediately brush victim’s property and fled. To that end, the case was reported and the authority of Denpasar Metro Police managed to catch the two suspects. Both suspects are now detained at detention cell of Denpasar Metro Police. (kmb21)

Strongly Alleged to Use Spy Cam Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Related to the mode used by dozens of perpetrators to burglar ATM belonging to victim remains an enigma. The police have not dared make sure which mode used by perpetrators. However, it is strongly alleged the perpetrators perhaps installed a skimmer and spycam at ATM machines. This is based on the information from several victims reporting to police station and claimed their money to have been withdrawn through the ATMs. Those victims admitted, before the money was withdrawn, their balance suddenly increased. However, some minutes later the money of victim were withdrawn more than the amount transferred previously. The possibility of their mode us-
ing skimmer and spycam in the ATM machine because by using this mode, perpetrators can withdraw the money of victims simultaneously. That is just an allegation, but definite information remains under police investigation, said Spokesperson of Bali Police, Gde Sugianyar, last Tuesday (Jan 26). Regarding to the increasing number of the victims, it was mentioned there were 40 reports entering into police desk. There were 2 incoming additional victims. “Both
victims reported their incident, last Monday (Jan 25),” he explained. The two victims were Putu Sukma Yulianti, 33, a resident living on Jalan Padi No. 21 A, Denpasar and I Nengah Cipta, 56, a resident of Jalan Pulau Misol XII / 12 A, Denpasar. Burglary action happened again in Tabanan. This time it afflicted the PT BPR Cahaya Bina Werdi at Banjar Brembeng, Selemadeg, Tabanan, last Monday (Jan 25). It was known to have been stolen thief. The money stored in the safe deposit box was taken away, and so did four units of computer. Estimated, the losses due to theft approximated to IDR 25 million. The event was known around 06:00 am Local Time when employees came to the office. In

I Nyoman Susrama, 47, the accused of journalist murder case against AA Narendra Prabangsa, was demanded by death penalty by prosecutors in the trial at Denpasar Court, last Tuesday (Jan 26). Prosecutor Nyoman Sucitrawan, said that things incriminating the defendant Susrama because he did not act humanly. “During attending the court session, the defendant gave intricate details and did not regretted his actions,” said Sucitrawan. Prosecutors said, from the statements of witnesses who exposed before the trial, both from the aspect of factual analysis and juridical analysis, all correspond to each other as charged. “Description of witness is a valid proof,” he said. Alluding to the revocation of examination document (BAP) bysome defendants, prosecutors said it could not be used as reference. “Description of defendantDaryanto, for example, admitted to have been tortured and forced to sign the BAP. However, he could not prove it in the trial,” said Sucitrawan. Hearing the prosecutor de-
mands, Susrama looked tense. He hurriedly approached his team of lawyer to make consultation. Defendant’s legal advisor Sugeng Teguh Santosa stated, because the prosecutor demanded maximum penalty, his party asked for two weeks to make a defense. “There are two defenses. The first defense is made by the accused and the defense made by the team of victim’s legal counsel,” said Sugeng. Related to the death penalty, it was considered as hallucinations act of prosecutor because many facts were manipulated. “It is the hallucinations of prosecutors to proves this act,” he said after the hearing. Because, there were some important facts that have never appeared during his trial, like the meeting on last February 6, 2009 before the murder took place. The meeting was obviously attended by witnesses that should also be considered in looking at the case. However, new facts were never revealed in the court. The Case of Plaga Field Drags Badung Board Member Governor releases the Letter of Approval Denpasar (Bali Post) —
Investigation on suspected cases of the Plaga field procurement mark-up continues to roll. It does not only drag a number of names of Badung Regency Government officials, but also a name of Badung legislator. After a number of Badung Regency Government officials inspected by Polda Bali (Bali’s Regional Police), now the investigation has turned to a Badung Council member from “PDI” (Indonesian Democratic Resistance Party) fraction, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, who is ready to be examined as a witness. Bali Police have received a letter of approval from the Governor, on behalf of the Minister of Home Affairs, to call and check the board member concerned. The approval letter of examination was numbered 171/582/ KBPPM dated January 21st, 2010. The letter signed by the Governor Made Mangku Pastika on behalf of the Minister of Home Affairs is a response to the letter number R/ 80/2010/Polda Bali subject to the Governor’s approval of the request to call and examine member of the Badung Regional Representatives Council (DPRD), Nyoman Giri Prasta. The letter mentioned that Nyoman Giri Prasta is called for questioning as a witness to the procurement of land designated as public ground of Plaga Village, Petang. The letter also stated that there are a number of conditions must be fulfilled by the examiners: the examination should be done proportionally and can not be drag on with respect to the dignity of Council and the institutional image of law enforcement officers; and after sufficient examination to immediately report the results. Being confirmed about this matter, the Chairman of Badung DPRD I Made Sumer,
Tuesday (26 / 1) yesterday, claimed to have not received letters of inspection approval of its members. It was expressed that he did not know whether the letter referred had reached the Badung DPRD secretariat or not. “It certainly has not arrived on my desk,” Sumer said. Meanwhile, Secretary of Badung DPRD Komang Gde Sutrisna admitted to have received a copy of the examination approval letter on behalf of Nyoman Giri Prasta, yesterday afternoon. According to Sutrisna, it has been forwarded to the Chairman of the Badung DPRD. For additional information, the case of Plaga field acquisition projects covering 1.06 hectares of land with a value of IDR 1.6 billion was subjected to BPK (Audit and Development Supervising Agency) findings. This case has been handled by Kejati (District Attorney) and Polda Bali. Badung Regency Government officials have been going through security checks at Polda Bali. Even the former Head of Government Administration also as Chairman of the Procurement Committee of Plaga field procurement project, Gde Nuaridja has been named as suspects. (DED)
SKPD Official Trips Are Trimmed Semarapura (Bali Post) —
Official travel programs of several regional working units (SKPD) are threatened to be trimmed, and so is the budget for procurement of goods that are not considered to be urgent. Trimming the budget is done to help allocating budget on the restoration development of Penataran Agung Klungkung Temple after the fire that happened in July 2009. Another possible cut is also on the budget for further development of the youth building with the fund of IDR 1.3 billion. Trimming and pruning to be done, is a consequence of Klungkung Regency commitment in assisting the reconstruction of temple that is one of the sojourning places of Ida Bhatara Besakih. Despite its importance, the budget allocation for the construction of the temple was not included in the proposal during the discussion process of Budget Work Plan (RKA). ‘’Helping the reparation of the temple should absolutely be done. Moreover, we have noticed some budget heading for procurement by some SKPD of goods which are not a pressing need. This includes official traveling budget because there are some very common SKPD that often do official travel,’’ stated Chairman of Klungkung Regional Represen-
tatives Council, A. A. Anom when asked his confirmation, Tuesday (26 / 1) yesterday. It was stated that the commitment to allocate budget for upgrading the temple has become a definite decision agreed by council representatives in a plenary session. However, Agung Anom has not mentioned the number of how much budget will be allocated for the reparation of the temple after the great fire. ‘’That is to be discussed with the executive. Council can not decide for themselves,’’ he said. Linked with the budget cuts for the youth building development, Agung Anom also said it is very likely to happen. Although his capacity is as the Chairman of the Council and also the Chairman KNPI (National Committee of Indonesian Youth), he said that they can not selfishly maintain budget allocation for the youth building. A Bag Robbed, Millions of Rupiah Vanished Denpasar (Bali Post) —
A misfortune was experienced by Made Indah Permata Sari (28), resident of Jalan Pucuk No. 10, Denpasar. Her bag was stolen when she was crossing the street around Jalan Diponegoro, exactly in front of the Prodia, Denpasar, on Sunday (24 / 1) afternoon. Not only loosing her valuables, but the victim also suffered abrasions on the knee as the injury from her fall. The information gathered by the police on Tuesday (26 / 1) yesterday, said the mugging case has been handled by the Denpasar’s Police Headquarter (Poltabes Denpasar). The perpetrator is still being pursued. ‘’The case was reported on Monday (25 / 1). The victim claimed to have suffered material losses of IDR 4.5 million,’’ said one officer of Poltabes Denpasar yesterday. According to the victim, she was riding her motorbike and came on the scene at 3:30 p.m. It is strongly suspected that the victim had previously staked out. The perpetrator was stalking the victim from behind. Right at the scene, the per-
petrators was closing into the victim’s motorbike and robbed her bag. ‘’The robber was also riding a motorcycle,’’ said the officer. When the robbery occurred, the victim had struggled to keep her purse. There was a mutual pulling action. Unfortunately, the thief was more powerful so the bag was successfully seized. In fact, to maintain the bag that contained a number of valuables, the victim had struggled until she fell and injured her knee. Although the traffic on the scene was fairly solid, the perpetrators escaped. He immediately raced after successfully robbing the victim’s bag. ‘’The victim had shouted for help to the people around, but the thief hurried away,’’ the officer said while asking his name to remain unpublished. The victim reported the case the next day. In her confession, the bag contained a mobile phone branded Sony Ericsson, vehicle registration permit, four ATM cards, Car and Motorbike Licenses, and IDR 2 million of cash. Obama approved secret operations in Yemen: report Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama approved secret joint U.S. military and intelligence operations with Yemeni troops that began six weeks ago and killed six regional al Qaeda leaders, The Washington Post reported. Obama approved a December 24 strike against a compound where a U.S. citizen, Anwar alAulaqi, was believed to be meeting with regional al Qaeda leaders, the newspaper said in its Wednesday editions. He was not the target and was not killed but since has been added to a short list of U.S. citizens to be killed or captured by the U.S. military’s clandestine Joint Special Operations Command, military officials told the Post. The American advisers do not take part in raids in Yemen but help plan missions, develop tactics and provide weapons, the paper said. The United States is also sharing highly sensitive intelligence with Yemeni forces, including electronic and video surveillance, three-dimensional terrain maps and analysis of the al Qaeda network, the Post said. “We are very pleased with the direction this is going,” a senior administration official was quoted as saying about the cooperation with
Yemen. A Yemeni official was quoted as saying the two countries maintained a “steadfast cooperation in combating AQAP (al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula), but there are clear limits to the U.S. involvement on the ground. Information sharing has been a key in carrying out recent successful counterterrorism operations.” In a newly built joint operations center, the American advisers are acting as intermediaries between Yemeni forces and U.S. military and intelligence officers in the United States to collect and analyze intelligence, the Post said. U.S. Special Operations forces and intelligence agencies have worked closely with Yemeni counterterrorism forces to target the leaders of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula over the last two months, U.S. officials have told Reuters. But the officials declined to provide details about U.S. cooperation or to say whether U.S. aircraft or cruise missiles have been used. U.S. forces have not taken part directly in the operations, they said. A high-level international meeting in London on Wednesday aims to bolster Yemen’s fight against al Qaeda after a Yemen-based al Qaeda group said it was behind the failed Christmas Day attempt to blow up a Detroit-bound plane.

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea fired artillery and South Korea responded with warning shots along their disputed western sea border Wednesday, but there were no reports of casualties and the North vowed more barrages would follow as part of a military drill. North Korea fired about 30 artillery rounds into the sea from its coast and the South immediately responded with 100 shots from a marine base on an island near the sea border, an officer at the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul said. He said no casualties or damage were reported, and that the North’s artillery fire landed in its own waters while the South fired into the air. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because of department policy. Later Wednesday, North Korea issued a statement saying it had fired artillery off its coast as part of an annual military drill and would continue doing so. Such drills “will go on in the same waters in the future,” the General Staff of the (North) Korean People’s Army said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency. The North fired more shots later Wednesday but South Korea didn’t
respond, a Defense Ministry official said, also requesting anonymity due to department policy. The exchange of fire came two days after the North designated two no-sail zones in the area, including some South Korean-held waters, through March 29. The North has sent a series of mixed signals to the South recently, combining offers of dialogue on economic cooperation with military threats, including one this month to destroy South Korea’s presidential palace. He admitted trading in exploited species without a permit and hunting abso-
lutely protected wildlife without authority, pleading guilty to two charges under the Wildlife Act and five under the Trade in Endangered Species Act. Department of Conservation prosecutor Mike Bodie told the court Kubus could have faced potential maximum penalties of NZ$500,000 ($355,000) and six months in prison. Bodie said the department sought a deterrent sentence for “the most

BEIRUT – Emergency workers will expand their search radius for the wreckage of an Ethiopian Airlines jet if they do not find the black boxes Wednesday, an army official said. Searchers have fanned out for 18 miles (30 kilometers) along Beirut’s coast, and about 5 miles (8 kilometers) out to sea, said the official, who asked that his name not be used because he is not authorized to speak publicly. The plane went down in flames early Monday just minutes after takeoff in a thunderstorm. All 90 people on board were feared dead. The black box and flight data recorder are critical to determining the cause of the crash. The army official said emergency crews were bringing the pieces of the plane they have found to a military base. On Tuesday, Lebanon’s transportation minister said the pilot made a “fast and strange turn” minutes after takeoff. But the minister cautioned against
making any conclusions about the cause of the crash, saying it was far too early and investigators still need to find the black boxes. Rescue teams using sonar-equipped boats and divers have recovered some bodies and pieces of the plane, but hope for finding any survivors has faded. Transportation Minister Ghazi Aridi revealed that the plane flew in the opposite direction from the path recommended by the control tower after taking off in stormy weather. He said the pilot initially followed the tower’s guidance, but then abruptly changed course and went in the opposite direction. “They asked him to correct his path but he did a very fast and strange turn before disappearing completely from the radar,” Aridi told The Associated Press. “Nobody is saying the pilot is to blame for not heeding orders,” Aridi said, adding: “There could have been many reasons for what happened. ... Only the black box can tell.”

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa won a resounding reelection victory Wednesday, beating back a challenge from his former army chief to lead this nation as it tries to rebuild from a devastating civil war, state television reported. With nearly all votes counted, Rajapaksa had a 58 percent to 40 percent lead over Sarath Fonseka, state television reported. Both men were considered war heroes by the Sinhalese majority for their successful offensive to destroy the Tamil Tiger separatists after 25 years of conflict. But Rajapaksa’s powerful political machine — and his alleged use of state resources, especially state media in his campaign — apparently overwhelmed Fonseka’s opposition bid to unseat him in the election Tuesday. Fonseka was also hoping for strong support from ethnic Tamils, who bore the brunt of the government’s final offensive against the rebels, but turnout among the minority was dismal. With overall turnout about 70 percent, state TV said Rajapaksa had secured 5.5 million votes to Fonseka’s 3.9 million, with only a few hundred thousand votes outstanding. There was no immediate reaction from either candidate. In the hours before the announcement, hundreds of troops surrounded Fonseka’s hotel, reflecting the tensions surrounding the race. Just eight months ago, the men declared victory in the war against the rebels. But a bitter falling out
pushed Fonseka to quit, join the opposition and challenge the president. Throughout the campaign, the opposition accused Rajapaksa of plotting to rig the vote and steal the election. Fonseka himself was unable to vote Tuesday because he was not registered. It was unclear if he had failed to register or if he tried and was left off the voter rolls. As results were being announced, troops surrounded the Cinnamon Lake Hotel after about 400 people, including alleged army deserters, gathered inside with Fonseka, military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said. “We don’t know what’s their motive, and as a protective measure we have deployed troops around the hotel, and people who go in and come out are being checked,” Nanayakkara told The Associated Press. He said there were no plans to arrest Fonseka. Speaking to reporters at the hotel, opposition lawmaker Rauf Hakeem denied deserters were there and called for the government to allow Fonseka freedom of movement. He said Fonseka had not tried to leave, but that the troop deployment signaled “his leaving the hotel will be quite dangerous.” Jehan Perera, a political analyst in Colombo, called the military presence at the hotel “absolutely
unprecedented.” “It reflects the suspicion and the level of mistrust,” Perera said. Attempts to reach Fonseka were not immediately successful. Fonseka remains popular with the troops he led to victory against the Tamil Tigers, and the government is worried that he might claim electoral fraud and then try to rally his former soldiers, Perera said. The race has been acrimonious from the start, with the general accusing his former boss of entrenched corruption and the president branding Fonseka a dictatorin-waiting. No major violence was reported during Tuesday’s polling. While voting among the Sinhalese majority appeared to be strong, turnout was sparse in some northern Tamil areas, where the most intense fighting drove hundreds of thousands from their homes. The minority community had been expected to support Fonseka and play a possibly pivotal role in the results. Rajapaksa campaigned on his war record and promises to bring development to the nation. Fonseka pledged to trim the powers of the presidency and empower parliament. Some observers fear that a dispute over the results could lead to street protests and violence.
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Worshippers found severed heads of pigs at two Malaysian mosques Wednesday following a spate of firebomb attacks on churches amid a dispute over the use of the word “Allah” by Christians, officials said. It was the most serious incident to hit Islamic places of worship following vandalism and other assaults at 11 churches, a Sikh temple, a mosque and two Muslim prayer halls across the Muslim-majority country in the past three weeks. Pigs are considered unclean by Muslims. The attacks followed outrage among Muslims over a Dec. 31 court verdict that allowed non-Muslims to use “Allah” as a translation for “God” in the Malay language. Many Malaysian Muslims believe the word should be exclusive to their religion, and that its use by others could confuse some Muslims and even lure them to convert. Several men who went to a suburban mosque to perform morning prayers Wednesday were shocked to discover two bloodied wild boar heads wrapped in plastic bags in the mosque compound, said Zulkifli Mohamad, the top official at the Sri Sentosa Mosque on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s largest city. Two similarly severed heads were also found at the Taman Dato Harun Mosque in a nearby district. Wild boar are common in Malaysia’s forests. Government leaders denounced the incidents and pledged to track down the culprits. “We are dead serious about this,” Hishammuddin told a news
conference. “We will bring them to justice.” The attacks on places of worship are considered a threat to decades of generally amicable relations between ethnic Malay Muslims, who make up nearly twothirds of Malaysia’s 28 million people, and religious minorities, mainly ethnic Chinese and Indians who practice Buddhism, Christianity or Hinduism. The tensions center on a court dispute in which the Herald, a newspaper published by the Roman Catholic Church in Malaysia, argued it has the right to use the word “Allah” in its Malay-language edition because the word predates Islam and is used by Christians in other predominantly Muslim countries, such as Egypt, Indonesia and Syria. The High Court ruled last month in favor of the Herald, overturning a years-old government ban on the use of the word in non-Muslim publications. The government has appealed the decision. Among the attacks in various Malaysian states, eight churches and two small Islamic prayer halls were firebombed, two churches were splashed with paint, one had a window broken, a rum bottle was thrown at a mosque and a Sikh temple was pelted with stones, apparently because Sikhs use “Allah” in their scriptures. The firebombings at the Islamic halls caused little damage except for scorch marks, but Zulkifli, the mosque official, said the pig heads were “a serious desecration.” Authorities arrested 15 Muslim men in connection with the attacks on churches, and four other unidentified suspects linked to the attacks on the Muslim prayer halls.

stani nationals. Other Bank Century funds were found in Dressner Bank of Switzerland totaling US$220 million, he said. “We have been working with the governments of Hong Kong and Switzerland. We are investigating it as a money laundering case,” he said after inaugurating a high prosecutor’s office.
Jakarta bracing for massive rallies THE government is taking anticipatory measures and will deploy 10 thousand police personnel to secure massive rallies by about 10 thousand students and activists grouped in the Clean Indonesia Movement (GIB) to mark President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s first 100 days in office in Jakarta on Thursday. Jakarta Police Spokesman Senior Commissioner Boy Rafli Amar said 10,000 officers were being prepared for the day and would be deployed to safeguard several main areas where protest rallies were expected, including the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, the State Palace and the House of Representatives. Ton Abdillah Has, one of the GIB initiators, who is also secretary general of the Muhammadiyah Students Association (IMM), said the peaceful rallies would, among others, be held in front of the State Palace on Thursday. He said that about 10 thousand demonstrators who were derived from at least 54 people’s elements such as students, activists, non-governmental organizations, intellectuals and religious leaders would take part in the rallies. “The rallies will be held as an expression of the people’s disappointment and concern over the government’s present performance which we considered has yet to satisfy the people,” Abdillah said. According to Abdillah, the people are not yet
satisfied with the present government, particularly with regard to issues such as the alleged framing of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) recently, the Rp6.7 trillion bailout provided for Bank Century and the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Indonesia and China which they said would harm the interest of the people. On a separate occasion, chairman of the People’s Committee Presidium of the Indonesian Nationalist Students Movement (GMNI), Muhammad Item also voiced the same opinion. “We don’t take the massive number of demonstrators for granted but we focus on the deployment of cadres and activists so that we would not disrupt public order and the people would be able to carry out their daily activities,” Muhammad Item said. In the meantime, Chief Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto said that the government was taking the necessary steps to anticipate the rallies on Thursday. “As it used to be, we will never underestimate rallies and will maintain security so that the rally would not turn wild, disturb public order, violate the law and cause physical clashes,” Suyanto said.

TIMIKA - Police have found at least 23 bullet shells near the spot where a convoy of buses carrying PT Freeport workers was attacked by unidentified gunmen two days ago, a spokesman said. In the incident which happened at Mile 60-61 on the Timika-Tembagapura road on Sunday (Jan 24) a number of people were injured. “In searches we conducted at three different spots, we found 23 bullet shells,” Papua Police Deputy Chief Brigadier General Syafei Aksal said here Tuesday. He said the shells were from bullets fired with long-barrel guns, but there were no clues yet about the gunmen’s identity. “We still don’t have clues enabling us to determine who they are,” Aksal said. It was also still not possible to say the attack was masterminded by the separatist Free Papua Organization (OPM), he said. “We can not speculate, nor do we as yet know that it was the OPM’s work but we are continuing our investigations and trying to collect more legal facts,” he said. Aksala also denied suggestions made by certain quarters that OPM had staged the attack to attract international attention. Following the shooting incident in PT Freeport’s concession area, police as well as military units in the Mimika region had been ordered to step up vigilance, Aksal said. Until now, there was no plan to reinforce the security forces stationed in PT Freeport’s concession area. Grouped in the Timika Amole II Task Force these security forces consisted of at least 1,700 men. In Sunday’s’ shooting incident a number of PT Freeport workers and Mobile Brigade members were injured, including one Canadian citizen, James Lockhart Howard. James, along with two Mobile Brigade members was on Sunday afternoon evacuated to Jakarta to receive intensive treatment for their injuries. Freeport’s activities after the incident were not disrupted and employees who were given a day off in Timika had returned to work at Tembagapura on Monday (Jan 25) and Tuesday morning.

DENPASAR - The coral reefs cultivated by coastal fishermen in Serangan village, Denpasar, have found their way to the export market. “We have been applying the technique of transplantation in coral reef cultivation and the result is that the products are now exported to Europe,” Chairman of the Association of Serangan Fishermen Wayan Patut said. He also said that trading coral reefs is actually against the law, as it harms natural conservation. However, by applying the transplantation technique in coral reef cultivation, the farmers produced the reefs in such a way that they could be locally marketed and even exported. “We have been cultivating coral reefs in this way for many
years including for natural conservation, in the Serangan waters,” one of the farmers said. “Besides saving nature, the technique also has its economic value, so that the farmers became enthusiastic in both cultivating and rehabilitating coral reefs,” he added. He said he could tell the difference between observed coral reefs from the saleable cultivated ones, by monitoring the reefs and rehabilitating them. “We have succeeded in cultivating coral reefs of different colors like brown, green, yellow, and other shades,” he added. He said the coral reefs had already been exported to various countries, like the United States, and are also marketed at local markets. Coral reefs are normally used to decorate sea water and fresh water aquariums.

Anand Ashram to held International Meditation Festival Antara
DENPASAR – Anand Ashram Foundation will hold International Bali Meditation Festival (IBMF) in Ubud, Gianyar. Hadi Susanto, the spokesman for Anand Ashram Foundation, said “this is the second festival held in Bali. The first one was held in November 2009 also in Ubud.” The festival will be held on November 11th through November 14th 2010 which has a theme of “One Earth One Sky One Humanity”. The theme is the form of unity of global goals; they are “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” of Asia, “Ubuntu” which is the dream of Africa, and “global village” concept of the western. Susanto explain that “Vashudhaive Kutumbakam” means all of the people throughout the world are one. The same tern known as “Ubuntu” by the African society while the western promotes global village as their peace concept. “So in the festival all of the people are families and will celebrate live with meditation,” he added. Currently, the festival team is preparing the programs and activities related to the festival. The topic for seminar and workshop will be varied started from spirituality through the development of youth. Susanto said “we hope that in this year’s festival there will be more international speaker and participants. This will be our effort to join all people in one big happy family.” The first IBMF was very successful and participants from throughout the world such as US, France, Puerto Rico, and Japan took part in the festival.

DAVOS - Bankers and political leaders took their battle over post-crisis regulation to the World Economic Forum which started in Davos on Wednesday. Thirty presidents and prime ministers and 2,500 business and academic elite are at the 40th anniversary forum held in the glitzy Swiss ski resort, seeking ways to fend off new storm clouds hanging over the global economy. While the International Monetary Fund has predicted world growth will be stronger than expected in 2010, other warnings have been made about strong measures needed to save millions of jobs. But the main focus will be on reform of the finance industry, with top bankers making a return to Davos to fight what they fear will be over-regulation. President Nicolas Sarkozy of France will plead the case for tough reforms in his keynote opening speech on Wednesday, French officials said. French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said she hoped “the Davos rendezvous will be fruitful for speaking about financial regulation. That means everyone has to be around the table.” The heads of Bank of America and Citi group, Brian Moynihan and Vikram Pandit, are among global finance industry chiefs in Davos discussing the reforms, particularly measures proposed by US President Barack Obama to limit the size of big banks and make them pay back much of the money needed for their huge bailout last year.
The banking industry is arguing against what it considers stifling controls, while bank leaders are also on the defensive about bonuses. Sixty percent of chief executives are “extremely” or “somewhat” concerned by the threat of over-regulation, said a poll by PriceWaterHouseCoopers released in Davos. But European Central Bank chief Jean-Claude Trichet offered support to the Obama plan, although in an interview with the Wall Street Journal he said there has to be global coordination of reforms. The WEF said in a report that banks would have to rethink their business models and accept “a lower profit world” and review their salaries. “A multitude of factors point to lower run-rate industry profitability in the near and medium term. Financial institutions will need to rethink their business and human capital models in order to adjust and differentiate as a result,” warned the report. Davos also started amid widespread fears of a slow recovery or even a double dip recession. Global production and trade bounced back in the second half of 2009 and “confidence rebounded strongly on both the financial and real fronts, as extraordinary policy support forestalled another Great Depression,” the institution said. However the UN’s International
Labour Organisation revealed that global unemployment had surged to leave a record 212 million people jobless — up 34 million in two years — and would remain high in 2010. “We need the same policy decisiveness that saved banks now applied to save and create jobs and livelihoods of people... This can be done through strong convergence of public policies and private investment,” said ILO director general Juan Somavia ahead of the Davos meeting. International shock at the extent of the Haiti quake disaster has also been reflected with several last minute changes to the Davos programme so that rebuilding efforts can be discussed and new international appeals for help made. Davos founder Klaus Schwab has insisted that Haiti be a priority topic at the event, despite the world’s economic ills. Among other leaders present at the anniversary event are presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil, Felipe Calderon of Mexico, Jacob Zuma of South Africa, Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan and prime ministers Morgan Tsvangirai of Zimbabwe and Stephen Harper of Canada. Also attending is South Korea’s President Lee Myung-Bak, whose country will lead the Group of 20 nations this year and host a summit on efforts to combat the economic crisis.
WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund said Tuesday the global economy is bouncing back better than expected after two years of crisis but warned stimulus was still needed to support the recovery. The IMF projected global growth of 3.9 percent in 2010, bouncing back from a 0.8 percent contraction in 2009 that marked the first downturn since World War II. “The global recovery is off to a stronger start than anticipated earlier but is proceeding at different speeds in the various regions,” the fund said in an update of its twice-yearly World Economic Outlook report published on October 1. The 2010 growth forecast was a solid 0.8 percentage points higher than the 3.1 percent estimated four months ago, reflecting “sluggish” growth in advanced economies offset by “relatively vigorous” growth in emerging and developing economies. Global production and trade bounced back in the second half of 2009, and “confidence rebounded strongly on both the financial and real fronts, as extraordinary policy support forestalled another Great Depression,” the Washington-based institution said. The recovery in gross domestic product (GDP), or goods and services output, still needs extraordinary support because there were few signs that private demand on its own account was taking hold, the fund said. “A key risk is that a premature and incoherent exit from supportive policies may undermine global growth and its rebalancing,” the report said. “For the moment, the recovery is very much based on policy decisions and policy actions. The question is when does private demand come and take over?” said IMF chief economist Olivier Blanchard. Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the IMF managing director, has repeatedly cautioned against premature exits from anti-crisis measures, saying they risk a return to recession. The United States, the world’s largest economy, was
expected to post GDP growth of 2.7 percent in 2010, a sharp 1.2 percent increase from the prior forecast. China, the emerging market leader and massive engine of the global recovery, will see growth accelerate to 10.0 percent this year, a full 1.0 percent higher than previously estimated. The IMF held unchanged its growth forecast for Japan, the second-largest economy, at 1.7 percent. The 16-nation eurozone’s GDP was set to expand 1.0 percent, up from the prior 0.3 percent estimate. Advanced economies overall would grow by 2.1 percent, eclipsed by the 6.0 percent pace seen for the emerging and developing economies. The global recovery will face the challenge of rising crude oil prices, which were expected to climb to 76 dollars a barrel on average this year and to 82.00 dollars in 2011, after 62.00 dollars in 2009. Big risks remain to the recovery, including elevated unemployment and fiscal deficits and debt, the 186-nation fund said. “High fiscal deficits and debt are raising concerns about sustainability and sovereign risk — which is the primary consideration in many countries.” Low interest rates “that might be contributing to asset price bubbles” were also a concern. Jorg Decressin, head of the IMF’s world economic studies division, ruled out immediate bubble risks in China despite its sizzling economy. “Asset prices in some specific sectors, in some specific regions of China, may be thriving but there’s certainly no widespread asset bubble,” he said at a news conference after the report’s release. The report said that “crucially, there remains a pressing need to continue repairing the financial sector in advanced and the hardest-hit emerging economies.” In a separate update of its Global Financial Stability Report, the IMF said: “Even though some bank capital has been raised, substantial additional capital may be needed to support the recovery of credit and sustain economic growth.”

Brooke Mueller Released From The Hospital CHARLIE Sheen’s wife Brooke Mueller has been released from a Los Angeles hospital after falling ill with an infection and a bout of pneumonia. Mueller was admitted to the hospital last week suffering from pneumonia in both lungs, linked to a recent operation to remove her wisdom teeth. She was transferred to an intensive care unit, where was being treated with antibiotics. Mueller’s doctors have blamed her raised stress levels for her slow recovery and weakened immune system and have ordered her to seek out therapies to improve her physical and mental health, reports People.com. The 32 year old is still fighting off the sickness but was deemed well enough to be discharged on Monday. Her mother, Moira Fiore, explains, “I picked her up and brought her to a friend’s house in Los Angeles where we will stay until we decide what we are going to do and where we will go.” Sheen was given the all-clear to visit Mueller in the hospital after a judge relaxed a court order designed to keep the couple apart following their Christmas Day fight, which landed the actor in jail in Aspen, Colorado. A hearing to review the protection order was postponed until February 8th after Mueller fell ill.
Report: Police Find Remains Of Missing Metallica Fan POLICE in Virginia fear skeletal remains found on a farm in the state are those belonging to missing Metallica fan Morgan Harrington, who went missing after a concert last year. Investigators have yet to confirm the remains are those of the missing 20 year old. A press conference was scheduled for late Tuesday afternoon to determine if the remains that a local farmer discovered about six miles from the site of her disappearance are those of Harrington. The farm is approximately 15 minutes outside Charlottesville. Reports list the remains as being a young, blond woman wearing dark clothing. At press time, Harrington’s parents were understood to be on their way to the scene to identify the body. Once news that Harrington broke, members of Metallica joined in the hunt for the Virginia Tech University student after she disappeared following one of their concerts in Charlottesville, Virginia back in October, and even offered a $50,000 reward for information about her whereabouts.

LOS ANGELES – The Mars rover Spirit has logged nearly five miles during six years of rolling around the red planet. It has driven forward, backward and uphill over plains, plateaus, and even a mountain as tall as the Statue of Liberty. NASA on Tuesday declared an end to Spirit’s roving career after repeated attempts to free it from a sand pit where it’s been stuck for nine months. With Martian winter approaching, the focus instead will turn to improving Spirit’s tilt so its solar panels can receive maximum sunlight. “Spirit has encountered a golfer’s worst nightmare: the sand trap that no matter how many strokes you take you can’t get out of it,” said Doug McCuistion, who heads the Mars exploration program at NASA headquarters. Trying to look on the bright side, NASA said Spirit can still do research while stuck in place, provided it survives the winter. Scientists wasted no time drawing up new research priorities for the former rover, including studying the planet’s core, tracking the weather and examining the soil in
detail. Spirit and its twin, Opportunity, parachuted to opposite ends of the Martian equator in 2004. By poking into craters, drilling into rocks and driving across the bumpy surface, they discovered geological evidence that water flowed on the Martian surface eons ago. Designed to last three months, both have dazzled scientists and the public by working past their warranty, and they’re closing in on the record for the longest-running Mars surface mission. That achievement is held by the Viking 1 lander, which lasted on the red planet for six years and 116 days. “We’re not giving up on Spirit. Since the start of this mission, we’ve really done everything that we can to try to squeeze every last little bit of science out of these rovers. We’re going to keep doing exactly that,” said chief scientist Steve Squyres of Cornell University.
Spirit’s troubles began last April, when driving backward because of a gimpy wheel, it broke through the crusty surface and became mired in soft sand. After spending half a year testing escape routes on Earth, NASA decided to drive Spirit out the way it came in. Despite several attempts, the rover’s operators made little progress, and slippage caused the wheels to sink deeper. Hopes for a great escape dimmed further when another wheel stopped turning, leaving four of its six wheels working. Spirit started making small progress in the last two weeks by driving backward. But NASA conceded that was not enough to get it unstuck before winter. With attention switched to winter survival, engineers are hurrying to get Spirit in position before the seasons change. Over the next few weeks, driving commands will be sent to Spirit to try to lift its rear wheels up so that it’s facing north. If the solar-powered robot geologist cannot significantly improve its angle, it will likely hibernate and have limited contact with Earth for months until it reactivates, project manager John Callas said.
CHIMPANZEES can be altruistic just like humans, according to a new study that found 18 cases of orphaned chimps being adopted in the wild. The kind-hearted chimp parents were discovered in the Taï forest in the West African country Ivory Coast. The adoptive caregivers, both male and female, devoted large amounts of time and effort to protecting their young charges, without any obvious gain to themselves. “I don’t know of any other cases of unrelated orphans being adopted,” said research leader Christophe Boesch of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany. He said the young chimps had lost their genetic parents to predation, injury and other causes. Until now, some scientists have thought that altruism, or engaging in a costly behavior to aid another without any benefit to oneself, was strictly a human trait. In studies of captive chimpanzees - humans’ closest living relatives - instances of selfless giving are rare. “Based on some of the captive studies, you see very strong claims that what makes humans special is this ability to cooperate and be altruistic toward one another,” Boesch told LiveScience. “In that sense the observation of Taï forest requires a big shift in our thinking about what makes us hu-
man, in the sense that this ability to be altruistic is something that we also see in chimpanzees.” The finding does tie in to other research of chimps in the wild that found the animals often share food, even meat, which is a very valuable resource. While some experts have argued that this was proof of chimpanzee altruism, others countered that sharing food could be more of a tit-for-tat behavior, and that there’s no way to prove the receiving chimps don’t reciprocate later on. But adoption seems like a stronger case for philanthropy, since the adoptive chimpanzee parents don’t seem to reap any immediate reward, and could likely survive on their own much easier without a youngling to care for, the researchers say. “Some adoptions of orphans by unrelated adults lasted for years and imply extensive care towards the orphans,” Boesch said. “This includes being permanently associated with the orphan, waiting for it during travel, providing protection in conflicts and sharing food with the orphan.” Another notable aspect of the finding is that even though parenting normally lies in the domain of female chimpanzees, half of the adopting parents in the study were male. Only one of these turned out to be the genetic father of his child.

Greenpeace called for a moratorium applying to the exploitation of fossil fuels and minerals, commercial fishing and of maritime transport, but not to traditional fishing or the seal hunt or whaling, practiced by the region’s indigenous peoples. According to the US Geological Survey, the Arctic could contain 90 million barrels of oil and 30 percent of the world’s assumed gas resources, considerable reserves made even more accessible by the melting of Arctic ice.
“The problem is, we are past the tipping point for ice loss and ocean acidification, even deep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions won’t prevent these things from taking a huge toll on the Arctic Ocean ecosystem,” Flarup Christensen said in a speech seen by AFP. “What we can control and prevent are any additional stresses to the Arctic marine ecosystem,” he said, calling for an international treaty to protect the Arctic modelled on the 1991 protocol on Antarctica.

MELBOURNE – Record-breaker Roger Federer made it to his 23rd consecutive Grand Slam semi-final after ending Russian Nikolay Davydenko’s hot streak at the Australian Open on Wednesday. The Swiss world number one misfired for the first set and a half, then went on a winning run of 13 games before holding off a late comeback to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, 7-5 in two hours 36 minutes. The 15-time Grand Slam champion, bidding for his fourth Australian title, will now play either Serbian third seed Novak Djokovic or French 10th seed JoWilfried Tsonga in Friday’s semifinal. Federer had been beaten by sixth seeded Davydenko in their two previous matches and yet again the Russian gave him problems before the Swiss sealed it on his second match point. “I was in a tough situation at 6-2, 3-1 down and 15-40 on my serve, but that’s the beauty of bestof-five sets,” Federer said. “I wasn’t panicking, I just relaxed and thought if the sun goes and his level drops just a little bit, the whole thing might change for the better and it did. DALLAS - The Dallas Mavericks withstood a late charge from the Milwaukee Bucks and hung on for a 108-107 victory on Tuesday. The Portuguese netted a first-half double at the Bernabeu but was shown a straight red card in the 70th minute for lashing out at Patrick Mtiliga and breaking the Malaga defender’s nose. Real, who had asked for the card to be rescinded, are likely to appeal against the ruling but if that is rejected Ronaldo will miss Saturday’s trip to Deportivo Coruna and the home game against Espanyol the following weekend. ROME - Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho faces a disciplinary hearing for his outburst after Sunday’s Milan derby, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said on Tuesday. Mourinho said that “everything was done for us not to win this match” after beating second-placed AC Milan 2-0 despite having two players sent off to go nine points clear at the top of Serie A. The Portuguese also said the game had left a “strange taste” in his mouth, adding that: “I’ve realised they won’t let us wrap up the championship early”. He was particularly angry with the red card shown to Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder, who was sent off in the 27th minute for sarcastically applauding the referee. The FIGC said on its website (www.figc.it) that Mourinho had been charged for comments damaging to the “credibility of federal institutions and casting doubt on the regularity of the championship”. The club and Inter chief executive Ernesto Paolillo have been charged too. Paolillo questioned the Italian Soccer League’s neutrality after AC Milan managed to reschedule a fixture to have the week before the derby free, like their city rivals.

Teams agree new tyre rule for 2010
FORMULA 1 teams have agreed to introduce an extra strategic element to races this season by forcing leading drivers to start races on the same tyres that they qualified on, AUTOSPORT can reveal. With the ban on refuelling for 2010 already forcing a big change in tactics compared to how grands prix have run in recent years, the new rule looks set to have an impact on how teams approach qualifying as well.

Haye not Thinking About Klitschkos David Haye’s trainer insists the WBA world heavyweight champion will not be thinking about conquering the Klitschko brothers until he has made his way past a “massive banana skin” in the shape of his bout with John Ruiz. Haye will fight Ruiz, the mandatory challenger, at Manchester’s MEN Arena on April 3 in his first defence of the belt he won from Nikolai Valuev last November. The 29-year-old Londoner has long-term plans to unite the heavyweight division by taking on champion brothers Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, who hold the WBC, WBO and IBF titles between them. But first he must overcome Ruiz a former two-time WBA world champion himself - and Haye’s trainer Adam Booth is confident there is no danger of his man underestimating the experienced American. “David and I both know that this fight with Ruiz is a massive banana skin in David’s plans of becoming a long-term heavyweight champion and unifying the titles,” Booth said. “Looking beyond John Ruiz would probably be the biggest mistake that we could ever make and we are certainly not going to do that. “John Ruiz has been at world level for a long, long time and he is the master at making talented fighters look less than ordinary.” Having initially won it in 2001 and again in 2004, 38-year-old Ruiz (44-8-1, 30 KOs) lost his WBA crown to Valuev in 2005 and was paid last year to stand aside and allow Haye the chance for a shot at the belt.

Although the tweak has not yet been committed to the regulations, sources have revealed that last week’s meeting of the Sporting Working Group agreed to the change as a way of improving the show. It is understood that the majority of teams present voted in favour of a rule that will require the top 10 cars that make it through to the final session of qualifying to start the race on the same tyres that they set their fastest Q3 time on. This will open up the possibility of teams gambling on sacrificing the best possible time in Q3 by running a more consistent but less quick tyre so as to have a better chance in the race. Alternatively, teams may choose a tyre that is better over a single lap to secure a good grid position, even if it runs the risk of compromising race performance. The teams hope that the rule tweak will serve to mix up the tactics throughout the grid and therefore lead to more exciting races. The change still needs to be voted on by the Formula 1 Commission and the World Motor Sport Council next week before passing into the regulations, but this is likely to be a formality. The refuelling ban this season has brought about mixed opinions about whether it will improve the racing - with some suggesting that the difficulties in overtaking will result in races turning into pure processions. McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said on Monday that he hoped the ban would prove a positive for F1.
“Inevitably, when you make a change, there are pros and cons,” he said. “Regarding the pros, it arguably makes qualifying purer because the fastest car/driver combination will be setting the fastest times, and the public can understand that. Secondly, in the race itself, overtaking was often being planned and implemented to occur as a consequence of strategy, and therefore happening in the pit lane and not the circuit. In the absence of that effect, drivers will have a greater incentive to overtake. There have been occasions in the past where a driver hasn’t had that incentive because he knows he will be running longer and can get past the car ahead strategically through the pit stops.” “Additionally, the fact that drivers will qualify on low-fuel, and then the next time they drive the car in anger into the first corner will be after a standing start with cold tyres and cold brakes and 160kg of fuel. That will be very challenging for them, not just in terms of getting round that first corner, but in terms of how they look after their tyres and how the balance of the car will alter as a consequence of that. And there will be drivers who are able to deal with those changes better than others. Those are all the positives. On the negative side, it’s possible that if all of the above is managed equally well by every driver, then we’ll have lost one of the strategic campaign interests that the more avid fans enjoyed in the sport. Hopefully the former points will outweigh the latter.”
