Plane crash in Ngurah Rai Airport There were no victims MANGUPURA – The head of Indonesian army for Bali and Nusa Tenggara area, Rachmat B and pilot Andi Wijanarko, were escape from a plane accident which happened on Thursday, June 24th 2010. Rachmat was ejecting from the airplane using the ejection seats so he and other officers on board were safe. The accident happened when the plane was trying to land but suddenly the plane was on fire and crash. The people on board were ejecting from the plane and used their parachutes. The commander in Ngurah Rai Airport, Aldrin P. Mongan, said that the department can not determine the cause of the accident. Continued on page 6

Rudd’s deputy, Julia Gillard, was elected leader in an uncontested vote about 12 hours after she surprised many colleagues by challenging a prime minister who until recently had been among the country’s most popular. Rudd was one of the West’s few Chinese-speaking leaders and helped broker the Copenhagen climate change agreement, but his quick removal showed his party had lost faith he could win a second term in national elections due within months. Many foreign policies, including Australia’s 1,500strong military contribution to the war in Afghanistan, are not likely to change under Gillard. But the leadership change immediately eased hostilities between the government and big mining companies over a proposed tax on so-called super profits from burgeoning mineral and energy sales to China and India.
Gillard quickly ended an advertising campaign that promoted the tax, keeping a Labor promise that Rudd broke to never use taxpayers’ money for political advertising. The world’s biggest miner, BHP-Billiton, responded by suspending counter-advertising that claimed the new tax would cost jobs and investment in the mineral sector, which is driving Australia’s economic growth. Gillard said her government is willing to negotiate on the proposed tax. Opinion polls show the tax debate is doing increasing harm to the government’s re-election chances. “I have said to the mining companies of this nation publicly that the government is opening its door, and we are asking them to open their minds,” Gillard told Parliament. Rudd rode high in opinion polls until he made major policy backflips, including shelving plans in April to make Australia’s worst polluters pay for their carbon gas
emissions. An airplane towed a banner over Parliament House on Thursday which made an apparent reference to the backflip: “Julia aim higher on climate.” But Gillard has not committed to pressing ahead with the government’s so-called emission trading scheme in which polluters would buy and trade permits for every ton of carbon gas they produce. The Senate has twice rejected the legislation. She said that as prime minister she would seek a community consensus on how carbon pollution should be priced. An emotional Rudd, flanked by his wife and three children, gave his final speech in the prime minister’s court yard at Parliament House on Thursday, saying he was proud that his first act in government in 2007 had been to ratify the Kyoto protocol for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “I’m proud of the fact that we tried three times to get an emissions trading scheme through this Parliament, although we failed,” Rudd told reporters.”I’m less proud of the fact that I have now blubbered,” he joked, as he struggled to contain his tears. Bali News Murderer of tour guide sentenced to 9 years Family of victim urges attorney to appeal Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Defendant Tjoe Woi Soen who was alleged to murder his colleague Tju Po Seng was sentenced to nine years in prison on the trial at Denpasar District Court, last Wednesday (Jun 23). The judge chaired by Djumain declared the man having profession as Mandarin tour guide had been proven to violate article 338 of the Penal Code. Meanwhile, the family of victim urged the prosecutor Eddy Wijaya Arta to submit an appeal. The judges in their decision being read alternately decided the defendant was guilty of criminal acts intentionally to remove another person’s life. Based on the investigation in trial, the deeds of defendant had complied with the elements of article 338 of Penal Code. The judge stated to disagree with the plea of attorney Gusti Made Oka Marstawa and Gusti Ayu Oka Pratiwi stating the defendant was not proven to have violated the article as in the indictment. By citing the testimony of a number of witnesses, the victim and defendant had been involved in a fight on Sunday, November 29, 2009 night. Most witnesses
belonging to the friends of defendant and victim at the same boarding house, admitted to have not seen what was used by defendant to kill the victim. One of the witnesses, Jeaffry Gilbert, confessed to have seen the defendant brandishing a sharp weapon in the direction of witnesses and asked witnesses not to interfere. But definitively, a number of witnesses claimed to know if the victim was also a tour guide died after being told by police and health officials. Based on the testimony of witnesses, supplemented with evidence filed in the trial, and strengthened by the defendant’s information, the judges finally concluded, it was the defendant who had eliminated the life of victim. Therefore, the judge panels assessed the punishment was worth
sentencing to defendant. According to the judges, the thing incriminating the defendant was that he had made loss the life of another. Meanwhile, the alleviating consideration was the defendant had never been convicted, and behaved polite during the trial. On decision of the judges, both prosecutors and defendant still had to think about it thoroughly. In the meantime, the family represented by Iswan Sukiarto stated to be less satisfied with the decision of the judges. His party urged prosecutors to take an appeal. For him the verdict of judges was not balanced with the suffering of his family that should have lost one of the most beloved members. They also mentioned the death of Po Tju Seng was not because of ordinary murder, but of cruel and sadistic deeds. (015)
Bali Channel Crossing Closed Negara (Bali Post)
Strong wind and tidal waves hitting Ketapang beach on Tuesday (22/6) and Wednesday (23/6) afternoons have stopped crossings on Bali Channel. It was said the huge tidal waves caused ships could not land at Kepatang harbor so the harbormaster closed the JavaBali route crossing route. On Wednesday (23/6) Head of Gilimanuk Harbormaster, Dewa Nyoman Kari, confirmed the sailings were stopped as the weather on the channel had worsen. The wind coming from south eastwards was quite strong and the waves were high. The peak happened on Tuesday from 5.10 pm-6.15 pm
and on Wednesday from 4.30 pm5 pm where the waves have gone 2 meters high in the middle of the ocean. This will endanger sailings and also tides towards the Ketapang beach have gone higher which caused the harbor not safe to land on. Boat captains who were on the middle of the channel reported the harbormaster that the bad weather is jeopardizing. It was then decided that the crossing will be closed until the weather gets better. Kari said, when the crossing was stopped since Tuesday afternoon, the number of people crossing is not much so there is no long queue. The vehicles who were going to cross only queued in the harbor’s parking areal. One hour
after it is closed, the weather slowly got better. Kari also said, even though the weather got better, the harbormaster is always geared up. The weather forecast done by The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated the wind speed at the channel reached 35 km/ hour with waves from 0.75 – 2 meters. Gilimanuk River, Lake and Crossing Transport (ASDP) Operational Manager explained separately, as the stopping was finished, Gilimanuk ASDP asked all ship captains to always be ready and report quickly if weather is endangering sailings. The priest who led, Jero Mangku Suyasa confirmed during the ceremony that on Thursday (24/ 6) there will be mapepada wewalungan caru (animal cleansing to be sacrificed procession). After the mapepada is done, the Besakih village residents, old, young, or teenagers, will help out (ngayah) in creating the cleansing procession offerings (banten caru). This was done since days ago primarily on making offerings as the banten caru will be done for cleansing the temple (melaspas and caru rsi gana) on Friday (25/6). The animals sacrificed are goat, butuan pig
and swan. Robbed Australians Shot Whilst Escaping Denpasar (Bali Post)-
Accused Hilmansyah (19), the robber to Australian victims, tried to escape when asked to show other places that he had been unfriendly to. But the South Denpasar Police Sector fast-attack troops don’t want to be played on. After three warning shots ignored, police paralyzed the accused by having his feet shot. Head of the police sector, Adjunct Police Commissioner I Gede Ganefo, confirmed it happened. According to Ganefo, it was a must done as the accused was trying to escape from the police. “When asked for the other locations, he tried to escape. So we had to shoot his feet therefore he can’t go anywhere,” Ganefo stated to the media on Wednesday (23/6). Moreover, the accused admitted then that there are two other locations. Mayor advises waste management to be stipulated in awig-awig Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Lack of public awareness in meeting the schedule of disposing garbage has made the streets and alleys in the corner of Denpasar to remain crammed by garbage. As a result, the Adipura trophy becoming the icon of sanitation for a city could not be achieved this year. These conditions inspired the Denpasar Mayor to design a waste management to be stipulated in the awig-awig or regulation of customary village. Moreover, public awareness of Denpasar in the waste management remained very poor. The proof, no less garbage was strewn around the roads when the hours of garbage disposal has been over. “It means that public awareness needs to be improved in the matter of complying with the time of disposing rubbish,” said the mayor of Denpasar IB Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra before the participants of technical guidance program on the development of waste management performance, last Wednesday (Jun 23), in Denpasar. In response to problems mentioned above, the Mayor Rai Mantra invited all components of community, including the role of the head of customary village, to come together to resolve the problem of rubbish in Denpasar. Not only focused on waste problems, but other environmental problems also required the community’s participation. Moreover, in five years to come, his party would put more emphasis on the environmental programs. Beauty in the form of various dance movements has been introduced since early ages. On seeing a dance staged, a toddler may watch it attentively or its fingers move and move as if imitating the movement of the dance. Virtually all customary villages in Bali have gamelan troupe. This troupe plays important role in expressing their entertainment arts and accompanying every ritual activity. This existence gives opportunity to villagers from child to adult to express their artistic talent especially in dance, drama and gamelan arts. Young girls under twelve or elementary school age have a chance to participate in performing Rejang Dance. By wearing white and yellow costumes and floral decoration on head, they dance beautifully accompanied by gamelan music. Rejang Dance is one of the sacred dances performed in relation to the organization of temple anniversary or odalan. Other than putting a basic love to their tradition, they also show devotional service or ngatur ayah through the arts. When they grow older, right on entering secondary school, they join customary village youth club or Sekaa Taruna. Here, with their male friends and their brothers and sisters start to learn about organization. Many things can be learned through this organization. Since it has affiliation to customary village, they can learn about the making of some simple oblation under guidance of senior oblation maker and various traditional arts. In Bali, this youth club actually play important role in preparing young generation to maintain their valuable cultural
heritages or to prepare themselves for inheriting customary responsibility. With their male counterpart, here the young girls also learn to play drama or more complex traditional arts. Popular genres of performance showed are pure entertainment and the one in combination with sacred dance. The latter usually features Calonarang. This magical drama involves a combination of male and female players. In essence, this Calonarang drama highlights the endless fight between truth and untruth symbolizing by sanctified effigies or tapakan like Rangda and Barong. By and large, it is also associated with ritual events at local temple. In the following stage, when woman gets married she will enter the new organization, namely customary village. Having learned much about ritual works, it is now the time to practice them in wider social life. They should attend some socio-religious activities when the events engage the members of customary village. At this stage, household mother can remain to show her devotional service through the arts other than social works. Through the arts, they may join the drama or individual psalmodic singing or pasantian. How is about their private life? It is normal as others. They also have opportunity to build career in their profession. In modern life with heterogeneous professions as today, woman also works as men do. Traditions do not impede them to reach outstanding achievement in selfemployee or office job. If they work at daytime, some social works will be held at the evening. Tradition is not something obsolete. Even, it retains abundant inspirations to create something new and creative that is advantageous for modern life. However, traditions should also be reviewed and adjust to the current condition without leaving behind its core. Tradition does not hinder women to get their career achievement. Hong Kong passes Beijingbacked election changes AP
HONG KONG – Hong Kong legislators passed the first part of a Beijing-backed package of electoral changes Thursday that critics say will delay full democracy in this former British colony. The package has been billed by the government as reform because it expands the committee that selects Hong Kong’s chief executive and adds elected representatives to the 60-member legislature, which is half chosen by professional and business sectors loyal to Beijing. The lawmakers approved expanding Hong Kong’s 800-member leader selection committee to 1,200 people with a vote of 46-13. Another bill that adds 10 seats to the Legislative Council was pending, but it’s also expected to receive the 40 votes required for passage. Critics say the plan is undemocratic because it reinforces a political system skewed in favor of Beijing without changing its fundamental structure. Beijing, however, was able to win over moderates in the pro-democracy camp by making a last-minute concession. Chinese officials agreed to a Democratic Party suggestion to put all 10 new legislative seats to a popular vote.
Meanwhile, in a political bonus to Beijing, the proposals have divided its opposition. Much of the debate has been characterized by bickering among pro-democracy legislators, with members of hard-line pro-democracy parties accusing the Democratic Party of abandoning the fight for full democracy. “If the Democratic Party votes for the reform package without the promise of genuine democracy, they have betrayed their promise and their integrity,” League of Social Democrats legislator Raymond Wong said Thursday before the vote. “They are accepting the lies of the people in power. They are no longer part of the pro-democracy camp.” Alan Leong, a lawmaker for the prodemocacy Civic Party, said that public support has been building for changes to make Hong Kong’s government more accountable to the people’s will. He added, “If we pass this so-called ‘improved’ bill, this momentum will disappear.”

Russia reopens Belarus gas tap but dispute goes on AP
MOSCOW – Russia’s gas monopoly said Thursday it is resuming supplies to Belarus now that it has paid a $200 million bill, but the ex-Soviet neighbor is in turn threatening to stop the transit of gas on to other European countries unless Moscow settles its own debts. The dispute, which has already caused a 40 percent slide in Russian gas supplies to EU member Lithuania, comes as a sobering reminder of the risks to Europe’s energy supplies posed by politicallycharged disputes between Russia and its neighbors. Alexei Miller, the chief of Russia’s state-controlled natural gas company Gazprom, told Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that supplies to Belarus would resume Thursday, the Kremlin said. But Belarus, which said Wednesday it had paid its debt to Russia, demanded in return that Moscow pay what it claims is a $260 million bill for transit of gas to the West. SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea has threatened to increase punishment for an American who was sentenced to hard labor for illegally entering the country. The North’s official Korean Central News Agency reported Thursday that North Korea is examining what harsher measures it would take against Aijalon Mahli Gomes in line with a wartime law.
Gomes, from Boston, was sentenced in April to eight years of hard labor and fined $700,000 for entering the country illegally and for an unspecified “hostile act.” KCNA said the North would be compelled to consider applying a wartime law to his case if the U.S. persisted “in its hostile approach” to the North. Tensions have been high after a South Korean warship sank in March and North Korea was blamed.

Quake rattles Ottawa, other Canada cities Reuters
OTTAWA (Reuters) – A magnitude 5.0 quake struck north of the Canadian capital Ottawa on Wednesday, shaking a wide area of central Canada, the U.S. Geological Survey and witnesses reported. There were reports of minor damage, and witnesses said the quake was felt in Montreal as well as in Toronto, where Canada’s largest city is preparing to host a meeting of world leaders later this week. Staff in Reuters’ Ottawa bureau reported buildings shook heavily for 25 to 30 seconds, setting off fire alarms across the downtown core. Some buildings were evacuated, but eyewitnesses reported no signs of major damage.

Senator Art Eggleton told Reuters he was in the middle of a meeting when they felt the quake. “We thought it was construction. All of a sudden the place started to shake. Someone yelled get out and we went,” Eggleton said. “Everything was moving. Some of my colleagues have experienced quakes here before and said this was the worst one.” According to the USGS, it was a shallow quake, only 11.9 miles deep, and centered 38 miles north of Ottawa, near the community of Cumberland, Ontario. Earthquakes are occasionally reported in the region, but they are usually small and felt only in the immediate area.

CASTELLDEFELS, Spain – A train speeding through a seaside rail station in northeast Spain plowed into a group of youths crossing the tracks to get to a beach party marking the start of summer, killing at least 12 and injuring 14, officials said Thursday. The youths had just got off a commuter train that arrived in Castelldefels near Barcelona shortly before midnight Wednesday and rather than use an underpass to get out of the station, an estimated 30 of them tried to cross the tracks on foot, witnesses said. In a matter of seconds, a long-distance train that was not scheduled to stop at that station barreled into them at a high rate of speed. Marcelo Cardona, a Bolivian in
his 30s who was on the commuter train, described the scene as hellish as people looking forward to a beach party with a bonfire were run over. He said the youths crossed “in a wave” but he himself held back and waited on the platform. “The euphoria of getting off the train immediately became screams. There were people screaming, ‘my daughter, my sister,’” Cardona said. Cardona said he saw “mutilated people, blood everywhere, blood on
the platform.” The final toll was 12 dead and 14 injured, said Nacho Solano, a spokesman for the Catalonia regional government’s civil protection department. Three of the injured are in critical condition. An earlier toll put the number injured at 17. It was Spain’s deadliest train accident since 2003, when 19 people died in a collision between a passenger train and a freight train.

KLATEN - Indonesian police said Wednesday they had captured a key terror facilitator and killed an accomplice in two raids in central Java. Abdullah Sunata was captured alive in Boyolali district while two suspects were arrested and another killed in an operation in neighbouring Klaten district, a police source said. Sunata is a veteran of religious conflicts in the Poso and Ambon areas and had been released after serving several years in prison for his role in the 2004 bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta which killed 10 people. He was a loyal follower of late terror leader Noordin Mohammed Top, who was killed by Indonesian police in September last year after one of Southeast Asia’s biggest manhunts.
Noordin was responsible for a series of terror attacks in Indonesia including the embassy bombing and twin suicide blasts at luxury hotels in Jakarta last year which killed seven people. Sunata, one of Indonesia’s most wanted men, was also allegedly a central figure in the establishment of a terror training camp which was disrupted in Aceh province earlier this year. One of the other men detained in Klaten was identified as Sogir, who had also spent time in jail over the embassy attack, police said. “Those arrested alive in Klaten are Agus Mahmudi and Sogir, and the man killed was Yuli Kartono,” a source in the counter-terror police force told AFP, without elaborating. “Abdullah Sunata was arrested alive in Boyolali,” he added.

JAKARTA - The father-in-law of slain Malaysian terror leader Noordin Mohammed Top went on trial in Indonesia on Thursday, facing up to 15 years in prison for helping one of Asia’s most wanted men evade capture. Baharudin Latif alias Baridin, 55, was arrested five months after suicide bomb attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta in July last year that killed seven people. “The defendant deliberately provided assistance and facilities to the perpetrator of terrorism by hiding from police the most-wanted terror mastermind Noordin Mohammed Top,” prosecutor Firmansyah told the court. Latif’s son, Ata Sabiq Alim, 24, was also put on trial separately for similar offences related to sheltering Noordin.
Noordin was killed in a police raid in September, ending one of Southeast Asia’s biggest manhunts. He led a group he called Al-Qaeda in the Malay Archipelago and was responsible for multiple deadly attacks in the mainly Muslim country, including the hotel bombings and a truckbomb blast at the Australian embassy in 2004. The trial opened in the South Jakarta District court a day after police arrested another one of Indonesia’s mostwanted terror suspects, Noordin loy-
alist Abdullah Sunata. Sunata was captured alive in a district of Central Java province while two suspects were arrested and another killed in an operation in a neighbouring district, a police source said. Explosive materials and information suggesting a plot to attack the Danish embassy in Jakarta were reportedly found in the raids, although this has not been confirmed. Firmansyah said Latif had been a member of regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) since 1995 and led a local branch in East Java province in 2000. “The defendant was introduced to Noordin Mohammed Top in 2005 when he picked him up in Pemalang town of Central Java and harboured him in his
home in Cilacap of Central Java,” he said. Noordin visited Latif’s house three times and married his daughter, Arina Rahmah, in 2006. “After the marriage, Noordin lived in Baridin’s house,” Firmansyah said. According to the International Crisis Group think-tank, Noordin married Rahmah in 2006 and the couple had two children. Rahmah was also arrested but denied knowing the true identity of her husband. The 2009 hotel attacks were the first against Western targets in Indonesia since 2005 when Noordin’s JI splinter group allegedly bombed tourist restaurants on the resort island of Bali, killing 20 people.

JAYAPURA - A tribe of hunters who live in treehouses in Indonesia’s remote Papua province has been counted for the first time in a national census, an official said Thursday. Around 2,868 “isolated and primitive” people from the Korowai tribe were interviewed by census workers in May, provincial census official Suntono told AFP. “It’s as if they’re still living in the Stone Age. They don’t wear any clothes and they live in trees in the jungles. They eat leaves and hunt wild animals for food,” Suntono said. Officials communicated with them via missionary translators using sign language, he said. “Now that we know who they are, their numbers and characteristics, they won’t be
isolated anymore. We can ensure they get access to education and healthcare just like any other Indonesian,” he said. Suntono said the government had known about the Korowais for more than a decade thanks to reports from Christian missionaries. “The census is only carried out once every 10 years and we only covered 70 percent of the Papua population in 2000 due to unrest here. The Korowais missed out,” he said. There are at least 250 tribes in the rugged Papua region, Indonesia’s easternmost territory bordering Papua New Guinea. The mainly ethnic Melanesian region has been plagued by a low-level separatist insurgency since it was incorporated into Indonesia in the 1960s following a vote widely seen as a sham.

DENPASAR – The Balinese classical dances are nominated to be entered in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscription. I Wayan Rai S, the head of Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Denpasar, said “for that reason, ISI Denpasar and other departments have conducted research and plan to conserve Balinese traditional dances.” The departments joined in the research are Indonesian Cultural and Tourism Ministry, Bali Government and also the locals who are concern with Balinese art and culture. Rai said that a team had been recorded several traditional dances such as Legong Keraton Lasem dance. The team has also created a mapping on the spread of Balinese traditional dances since June 2010. “The dances in Bali are divided into three parts which are wali, bebali, and balihbalihan and each has its own dances. The dances represent all
traditional dances in Bali,” Rai said. The mapping is needed to prevent the dances claimed by other nations and to protect the local culture. Hence, it was not excessive if the committee gave the honor to this art field to appear on a prestigious stage of Ardha Candra amphitheater. The singers appearing on stage were not of trivial class, but on average the singers had been widely known by connoisseurs of musical arts in Bali. Balinese Culture Popo Danes studio held Architectural Workshop for Kids antara
Denpasar - Popo Danes Architect and Danes Art Veranda studio will hold Architectural Workshop for Kids. Erika, the head of the committee, said “the event will be held on July 2nd 2010 and hundreds of kids will take part in the event. Kids from the age of five through eleven will take part in the event.” The event is one of the methods to attract kids in the architecture world. Kids are closely related with
creativity, one of them is drawing and it is being used by Popo Danes to introduce architecture since early age. It also can develop their talent and skills. The event will be divided into two sessions, the drawing and coloring session. The theme of the event is “my house”. Each of the kids will draw a house in their imagination. Erika said that in other session, the kids must turn their two dimension picture into three dimension house. It means that they must build a model house in group. The kids
will be assisted by the Architectural for Kids team. “Every session will be ended by the presentation of each works,” she added. The event is held to respond the question of the kids on the architecture world. The participants will also take a tour around the Popo Danes Architect studio. (Star Fruit Leaves In Sweet Sauce) Star fruits trees grow in many Balinese gardens, a convenient source of leaves for vegetable dishes. The leaves are crunchy with a slightly bitter tang. If not available substitute with spinach leaves.
INGREDIENTS: 400 gr star fruit leaves, washed ½ cup basic spice paste 2 cups coconut milk 2 salam leaves 300 gr beef rump, minced 30 cm square of banana leaf ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp black peppercorn, crushed PREPARATION: Bring 3 liters (12 cups) of lightly salted water to the boil in a stockpot. Add star fruit leaves. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Drain leaves, and then cools to room temperatures in ice water. Drain and dry well. Place half of the spice paste into saucepan and sauté for 2 minutes. Add coconut milk and salam leaf, reduce heat and simmer until sauce thickens. Season minced beef with the remaining spice paste. Place on banana leaf and roll up very tightly into the shape of a sausage. Steam for 15 minutes. Allow to cool, open banana leaf and break meat into its original minced consistency. Mix the coconut milk and mince beer well and add star fruit leaves and mix again. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve at room temperature with steamed rice. (www.baliguide.com/balifood)

BEIJING - China Thursday warned against “protectionist” retaliation over its currency policy as lawmakers in Washington pressed ahead with legislation aimed at punishing Beijing for its weak yuan. Foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang pushed back at calls for China to let the yuan appreciate, saying it would not solve the controversial Chinese trade surplus with the United States. “We believe the appreciation of the yuan cannot bring balanced trade and cannot help the US solve its problems of unemployment, overconsumption and low savings,” he told journalists. “We hope the US can reflect on the problems of its own economic structure, instead of playing blame games and imposing pressure on others.” Qin’s comment came after US lawmakers Wednesday pushed legislation they said would treat currency manipulation as an illegal subsidy and enable US authorities to impose tariffs on Chinese goods. Critics have said for years that the yuan’s de facto peg against the US dollar unfairly makes Chinese exports cheaper, hurting rival trading nations. Qin stressed the importance China places on trade with the United States and cautioned against
punitive tariffs, which he said amounted to protectionism. “We hope the US can work with us and take a practical and constructive attitude and practical and constructive measures to promote our economic relations in a balanced way,” he said. “Resorting to trade protectionism would be unreasonable and bring benefit to no one.” On Saturday, China’s central bank pledged to make the yuan exchange rate more flexible in an announcement widely seen as a bid to head off rancour at this weekend’s G20 summit and amid the mounting accusations of US politicians. Since then, the central bank has allowed limited movement in the currency, but has ruled out a large revaluation. According to the latest US trade data issued earlier this month, the US trade deficit with China expanded 14.3 percent to 19.3 billion dollars in April. Last year, the deficit rose to 227 billion dollars, helping boost China’s foreign reserves, now at a massive 2.4 trillion dollars.

BANGKOK - US carmaker Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it would spend 450 million dollars to build a new plant in Thailand, giving a much-needed boost to an economy reeling from deadly political unrest. Ford said the factory in Rayong, about 150 kilometres (90 miles) southeast of Bangkok, would employ up to 2,200 workers with production scheduled to begin in 2012, starting with the next-generation Ford Focus. It will have an initial output capacity of 150,000 vehicles a year, mostly for export, boosting Thailand’s efforts to be a regional hub for car production. Ford said it planned to buy about 800 million dollars of local components every year through Thai suppliers. The move is welcome news for the Thai economy, which has seen its growth stunted by two months of anti-government protests in Bangkok that paralysed parts of the capital and scared away foreign
tourists. The mass rally by the “Red Shirt” movement, seeking immediate elections, sparked outbreaks of violence that left 90 people dead, mostly civilians, and nearly 1,900 injured. Ford chief executive Alan Mulally said the investment “is another important step in our aggressive expansion in the AsiaPacific region”. The company, which expects the region to account for roughly 40 percent of the car industry’s growth over the next five to seven years, has invested three billion dollars in expanding its operations in Asia since 2006. Ford has enjoyed a turnaround in its fortunes following a dire period for the industry, battered by a severe global economic downturn that forced the US government to rescue General Motors and Chrysler from bankruptcy. The auto giant said increased global sales helped it to a 2.1-billion-dollar profit in the first quarter of 2010. This followed earnings of 2.7 billion dollars for all of 2009 — Ford’s first annual profit since 2005.

TORONTO - Canada on Wednesday welcomed the first arrivals for the G8 and G20 talks as a leaked draft communique said leaders will warn that the economic recovery remains “uneven and fragile.” The leaders, as well as throngs of journalists, protesters and 20,000 police providing security, will be in Toronto for a June 26-27 G20 summit and a G8 gathering the day before in Huntsville, north of the Canadian city. The leaked document obtained by environmental activist group Greenpeace noted a still patchy recovery from the worst economic crisis in a generation. “While growth is returning in many countries, the recovery is uneven and fragile, and unemployment remains at unacceptable levels,” the text said. Skirting a contentious issue that has divided Europe and the United States, leaders are to say stimulus spending had helped stabilize the global economy. Washington has urged Europe not to cut government spending before the recovery is assured, for fear of plunging a swathe of the world — including the United States — into a double-dip recession. European nations, led by Germany, France and Britain, argue drastic cuts are needed to put their books in order and create a firm basis for future growth. “Fiscal and monetary stimulus has helped restore private demand and lending, and we have taken strong steps toward increasing the stability of our financial systems,” said the largely incomplete text. Several G20 nations are expected to fast-track consolidation. Leaders will also ask trade ministers to move toward the “endgame” of much-delayed World Trade Organization negotiations. “We instruct our trade ministers to prepare a full assessment of the state of the negotiations and a plan of the way forward for our consideration at the Seoul G20 summit in November of this year.” Host Canada warned this week that pockets of protectionism are hurting the global recovery. Most G20 countries have held firm on their
commitments made at last year’s summit in Pittsburgh not to impose new trade barriers, Canadian Trade Minister Peter Van Loan said. In Toronto, G20 countries “will be called to account for what they’ve done, and (Canada) will try to keep countries focused on the right path for the future,” said the minister. British Prime Minister David Cameron’s spokesperson told reporters: “We need to see structural reform and we need to see sustainable growth in the world economy and we need to see action on things like trade.” Leaders will also push forward a “voluntary” plan for “identifying inefficient fossil fuel subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption.” “We agree to continue working to develop voluntary, member-specific approaches for the rationalization and phase out of such measures,” said the communique. Agreement on proposed bank levies, favored by Europe and the United States, but opposed by Canada and emerging economies, is unlikely. Changes to bank capital rules have been shifted to the next G20 meeting in Seoul in November. China’s President Hu Jintao arrived in Ottawa on Wednesday for a three-day state visit before heading to the summits. Hu could face new pressure over Beijing’s currency controls and world efforts to rein in ally North Korea. A senior US official said US President Barack Obama will meet Hu, South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak, new Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on the sidelines of the summit. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will also meet with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper immediately following the summit, in Ottawa. G8 talks will focus mainly on international development issues and reducing maternal and child mortality in developing countries, as well as security threats such as the Afghanistan conflict, and nuclear threats. Canada has invited the leaders of Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa to participate in “G8 outreach sessions” on development goals. Colombia, Haiti and Jamaica heads are also coming to talk about transnational crime, terrorism and policing with the G8.

Oscar organizers ponder earlier show time Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES – Academy Awards organizers are talking about moving up the date of the show, possibly as early as January. At a Tuesday meeting, the academy’s board of governors discussed the idea of holding the Oscars earlier. Most recent shows have been held in late February. A statement Wednesday by the academy said the earliest any date change could take effect would be for the Oscars in 2012. A firm date of Feb. 27 already has been set for next year’s 83rd Oscars. The academy statement said the idea is “being explored as a possibility.” “There are a number of questions still to be answered and challenges to be addressed with regard to moving the show to an earlier date,” the statement said. “The academy governors and staff have been and will continue to look into those questions and challenges. No decision has been made and there is currently no timetable for when a decision might be made.” Leslie Unger, spokeswoman for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, would not comment on why a date change was being considered. For many years, the Oscars were
held in late March but were moved to February in 2004 to shorten what many in Hollywood considered a prolonged awards season. At the time, Oscar planners said waiting until late March to hand out awards might have been hurting the show’s TV ratings, with audiences losing interest by then. Slotting the show in late February brought Hollywood’s biggest awards show closer to earlier honors, such as the Golden Globes and ceremonies held by actors and directors guilds. Critics say audiences now are inundated with one awards show after another and that the flurry of ceremonies would be more furious if the Oscars were moved earlier. “Isn’t moviemaking all about creating suspense and waiting, waiting, waiting for your payoff?” said Tom O’Neil, a columnist for awards website TheEnvelope.com. “We’re seeing a herd mentality taking effect now.”
Oscar voters are influenced by earlier awards and might be more inclined to play follow the leader, choosing the same winners if the show were held closer to other ceremonies, O’Neil said. This past season, the sci-fi blockbuster “Avatar” had the momentum in mid-January, when it beat the Iraq War drama “The Hurt Locker” at the Golden Globes. At the Oscars seven weeks later, momentum had shifted to “The Hurt Locker,” which beat “Avatar” for the top prizes. Such breathing room between major awards shows gives Oscar voters a chance to weigh contenders more clearly and extra time to see them all, particularly important now that the academy has doubled the best-picture field to 10 films, O’Neil said. Though the Oscar TV audience hit an all-time high in 1998, when blockbuster “Titanic” dominated the awards, the show’s ratings have been on a general decline the last 25 years. The audience fell to a record low of 32 million viewers two years ago but rebounded to 36.3 million in 2009 and 41.7 million this year as producers tinkered with the ceremony to liven it up.

Gregg Allman undergoes successful liver transplant Associated Press Writer
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Famer Gregg Allman underwent a successful liver transplant surgery Wednesday morning at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. Allman’s manager Michael Lehman told The Associated Press in a phone interview that Allman was groggy but awake Wednesday morning and that the co-founder of the seminal Southern rock group The Allman Brothers Band could be sitting up and on his feet by nightfall. “He’s psyched to put this time of his life behind him and have a chance again to feel really healthy and good, and hopefully live for many more years to come,” Lehman said. Allman began treatment for Hepatitis C in 2007 but chronic damage to his liver led to the transplant. He had been on the waiting list until doctors found a suitable liver. Lehman said Allman got the call late Tuesday afternoon and drove to Jacksonville from his home near Savannah, Ga., for the early morning surgery.
Doctors told him to expect to be in the hospital for up to a week, stay in the Jacksonville area for up to three weeks and possibly be back on the road by November, Lehman said. Doctors said he should be able to participate in the wedding of his daughter, Island, on July 26, he added. “It’s his dream to be able to walk her down the aisle,” Lehman said. Allman battled addiction over the years and has been suffering side effects from the hepatitis, though he still managed a robust touring schedule. He had been on the transplant list longer than average, Lehman said, but his schedule was kept mostly clear in anticipation of a possible transplant this summer. NEW YORK – Imagine no cars — or fewer, anyway. In New York, a two-mile stretch of the FDR Drive parkway is torn down to open lower Manhattan for parks and plazas, and bicyclists are given their own lane on the Brooklyn Bridge. An elevated highway in Guangzhou, China, is transformed into a pedestrian promenade, and rooftops are linked by raised walkways and bikeways. In Jakarta, Indonesia, traditional bike taxis called becaks are re-engineered to be lighter and easier to steer. The three cities and seven others are featured in an exhibit on environmentally friendly transportation of the future opening Thursday in New York. The exhibit, titled “Our Cities Ourselves,” will be at the Center for Architecture in Greenwich Village through Sept. 11 before traveling to the other cities, which include Buenos Aires, Argentina; Budapest, Hungary, and Johannesburg, organizers said. “We hired 10 architects from cities all over the world to help us imag-
ine what their cities might look like in 2030 if we made the cities more human scale, more environmentally sustainable,” said Walter Hook, the executive director of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, which organized the exhibit with funding from the San Franciscobased ClimateWorks Foundation. Hook cradled his bike helmet in one arm as he provided a tour of the exhibit. “We’re essentially trying to send the message that if cities don’t move in this direction we’re going to be faced with cataclysmic climate change, because in the developing world the use of private automobiles is escalating at double-digit rates,” Hook said. The cities were chosen because Hook and the New York-based ITDP have relationships with them, having helped design bus systems in

In the township of Soweto, in Johannesburg, current photos show low-rise housing and not much else. But the Soweto of 2030 is bustling with markets and public spaces. “You weren’t allowed to open shops, traditionally, under apartheid,” Hook said. “So what we’ve done is we’ve sort of reimagined it as a kind of new town ... where people could actually work and shop in downtown Soweto.” The model of Guangzhou, also known as Canton, shows a network of rooftop footpaths evoking Dr. Seuss. “In China, anything’s possible,” Hook said. The Utopian vision of lower Manhattan shows pedestrians, bicycles and very few cars. Architect Michael Sorkin, who designed the New York piece of the exhibit, said he thinks it’s “completely feasible.”

At Virgin Gaming, our mission is similar to what Sony is doing with PlayStation Move and Microsoft is doing with Kinect — we’re broadening the scope for everyone.” With the global gaming business raking in $60 billion last year, Billy

Obesity Doesn’t Always Guarantee Heart Disease SATURDAY — For a small number of obese people, those extra pounds do not condemn them to heart disease or diabetes, Dutch researchers report. For those few without other risk factors such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol, being obese doesn’t raise their risk of cardiovascular trouble. “Metabolically healthy obese persons do not have the elevated cardiovascular risk of obesity, but represent only a small subset of the total obese population,” said lead researcher Dr. Andre van Beek, from the University Medical Cen-
ter in Groningen. “It’s the metabolic risk profile that counts, and not the weight itself.” He was to present the findings Saturday at the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in San Diego. For the study, van Beek’s group collected data on 1,325 obese people from among 8,356 people who participated in a large Dutch study. Among the obese people, only 90 (6.8 percent) were metabolically healthy, the researchers found. That meant they had no history of heart disease, stroke, diabetes or high blood pressure, or high cholesterol or triglycerides. In addition, none of
the 90 were taking cholesterol-lowering drugs. Over more than seven years of follow-up, only one of these people developed cardiovascular disease. As a percentage (1.1 percent) this was not significantly higher than heart disease seen in metabolically healthy people who were overweight (1.3 percent) or normal weight (0.6 percent), van Beek’s team found. To see whether you are at risk for heart disease, check your metabolic risk profile, van Beek advised. “If this is normal, be reassured that there is no excess cardiovascular risk independent of weight class,” he said.
At least one expert is not convinced that obesity itself does not lead to an increased risk for heart disease. Dr. Gregg C. Fonarow, director of the Ahmanson-UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, said that “while this study did not find increased risk associated with obesity if no metabolic abnormalities were present, it is important to note that other studies with longer-term follow-up have shown there is an increased risk of cardiovascular events in these individuals.” “The balance of evidence suggests that, over the long-term, obesity imparts higher cardiovascular risk, even
if metabolic abnormalities are not present at baseline,” he said. A researcher specializing in diabetes and metabolic syndrome also thinks the follow-up period in the study is too short to draw firm conclusions about whether certain obese people are protected from heart disease. Dr. Tae-Hwa Chun, an assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan, said that “clearly we need to know why some overweight and obese individuals are protected from metabolic deterioration and increased cardiovascular risk.”

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Phil Jackson thinks he is just about ready to walk away from his unparalleled NBA coaching career. The Los Angeles Lakers are all hoping he will change his mind in the next week. The 11-time NBA champion coach said Wednesday he is leaning toward retirement. After a full season of speculation on his health and future, Jackson will wait for the results of another battery of medical tests before informing Lakers owner Jerry Buss of his final decision late next week. The 64-year-old Jackson is the most successful coach in league history by almost any measure, with a .705 regular-season winning percentage, a record 225 postseason victories and two more titles than Boston’s Red Auerbach. His Lakers beat the Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the NBA finals last week to claim their second straight title, and Jackson sounds increasingly interested in going out on top. “Some of it’s about health,”
Jackson said. “Some of it is just the way I feel right now. I’ve had vacillating feelings about it. It’s hard not to feel like coming back when you ... have an opportunity to coach a team that’s this good, but it’s what I feel like right now.” Jackson will drive to his offseason home in Montana this weekend. He didn’t attend the Lakers’ victory parade through downtown Los Angeles on Monday, instead undergoing tests on a body with two replaced hips, a sore knee requiring a brace under his suit during the season, and a previous heart problem. LONDON – Nicolas Mahut and John Isner will drag their weary bodies back onto court at Wimbledon on Thursday to resume the longest match in tennis history as Queen Elizabeth II makes her first visit since 1977. A string of tennis records were blown away as Mahut and Isner came off court on Wednesday at 5959 in the final set, having slugged it out for 10 hours when play was suspended as they ran out of daylight. Tennis fans packed out the 782-capacity Court 18, with people lining the roof of the Wimbledon broadcasting centre several deep, and straining to peer through any gaps they could to catch a glimpse of the epic match. The unfinished fifth set itself was longer than the previous longest match ever played. That match took six hours and 33 minutes. The shattered record was set at the 2004 French Open, when Fabrice Santoro beat fellow Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 3-6, 16-14. Despite the draining effects of their heroic battle, a winner must still be found and Mahut and Isner are scheduled to return to action in the third match on Court 18 on Thursday. “Nothing like this will ever happen again, ever,” said an exhausted Isner, while Mahut added: “We played for too long.” The conclusion of the historic encounter will take the spotlight later on Thursday, but attention will be fixed firmly on Centre Court when

Valentino Rossi’s replacement announced YAMAHA has announced that its 41-year-old test rider Wataru Yoshikawa will take Valentino Rossi’s place in the Fiat Yamaha team, from Catalunya on July 4 until the injured Italian returns. Reigning seven time champion Rossi broke his right leg in a practice accident at Mugello and Yoshikawa is expected to ride alongside 2010 title leader Jorge Lorenzo ‘for at least three races’. Yamaha struggled to find a suitable rider to take Rossi’s place and - with the temporary promotion of Tech 3’s Colin Edwards or Ben Spies, or double-duty by Yamaha’s factory WSBK riders James Toseland or Cal Crutchlow only producing further logistical problems - the decision was made to go with Yoshikawa. “We have considered many different scenarios and candidate riders to fill the temporary vacant seat in the Fiat Yamaha Team,” confirmed Lin Jarvis, managing director of Yamaha Motor Racing Srl. “We had always planned to use a rider from within the Yamaha Motor & Tech 3 family but for each rider we considered who is in ac-
tive competition, their move to the Fiat Yamaha Team would have created another problem for their own racing program or for the teams in which they are engaged. “Finally, after a great deal of consideration, we have selected Wataru Yoshikawa, our Japanese YZR-M1 Test rider, to join us as our substitute rider. We provisionally plan for three races (Catalunya, Sachsenring and Laguna Seca) but we will adjust the plan accordingly when we know more about Valentino’s expected date of return. “The benefit of Wataru’s presence in our team will be threefold. Firstly he brings with him a wealth of experience riding the YZR-M1. Secondly his presence allows us to fulfill our
contractual obligations and to join the team’s quest to accumulate points for the Team Championship. “Thirdly he will gain valuable first hand MotoGP race experience in three challenging circuits which will surely be very useful to assist him and Yamaha with the future d evelopment of the YMR-M1. “We look forward to welcoming Wataru into our team while we wait for Valentino’s return to full fitness.” Yoshikawa won the Japanese Superbike Championship for Yamaha in 1994 and 1999. Between 1992 and 2002 he made wild-card appearances in the World Superbike Championship for Yamaha and in 1996 completed a full season, finishing ninth.

Our technical team and the drivers are confident we’ll go well there, as it is medium-to-low downforce and the performance we showed in Canada demonstrated that we have a strong package on this type of configuration. “Additionally, we have some new upgrades scheduled for introduction that should keep us abreast of the other teams. It’s a development race now, and rather than introduce major new upgrades we’re doing it asand-when ready to keep the momentum high. I think Valencia should suit us equally as well [as Montreal], and with both drivers performing at nearoptimum levels, and a bit of luck, I think we can finish the job there. “When you see [Sutil and Liuzzi] together, there is a harmonious working relationship. They constantly talk about the races, sit in the same debriefs, eat meals together at the circuit and do get on well together, and I think that’s one of the many reasons we are performing so well this year.
