The number of ATM burglary victims in Bali, continued to swell. Until last Friday (Jan 22) evening, the number of victims has reached 34 people. However, the data of victims which have officially reported to the Police station as given by Bali Police amounted to 29 victims. Meanwhile, the rest were still in the process of examination in room of investigator. Information gathered last Friday mentioned, there were two victims made a report to Denpasar Metro Police, on last Thursday (Jan 21). They were Salahudin and Elektro. They claimed to lose money at BCA’s ATM. “The loss suffered by the victims reached IDR 50.8 million,” said one of the officers last Friday. Meanwhile, details of the existing data of victims in the Bali Police were 22 customers at Denpasar Metro Police, 4 customers at Bali Police, 1 customer at Buleleng Resort Police and the 2 customers at Gianyar Resort Police. “The total
number of temporary victims officially entered into the police counter were 29 customers,” explained Spokesperson of Bali Police Gde Sugianyar. All the bank customers becoming the victims of ATM burglary occurred during the period of January 16-21, 2010. The total number of material losses suffered throughout victims reached IDR 478,337,300. “In total, they were 8 victims of BCA, Bank Permata (9), BNI (4) and Citibank (1),” he explained to journalists last Friday. Sugianyar added his party was still investigating and tracking the perpe-
trators of ATM break-ins troubling the communities. So far, the police could ask for information to a number of witnesses and checked all existing ATMs in Bali. Such checking was carried out to determine whether there was skimmer and spy cam installed by perpetrators. In order to reveal what has become a public issue lately, his party also made cooperation with Headquarter of National Police. A female corpse was found lying naked on a couch blankly at the edge of the woods of West Bali National Park (TNBB), Cekik, Gilimanuk, last Friday (Jan 22) morning. In the neck of middle-aged woman’s body was found scars of rope bondage and a half of her tongue stuck and exuded fluid mixed with blood. The report was received by a resident of Penginuman Hamlet, Misman, 50, at 08.30 am Local Time. Misman who is a fisherman passing on location when he was about to leave work to Labuan Lalang, Buleleng by bicycle. Misman put suspicion to naked figure woman lying on blank gazebo. When he approached and checked the fat woman was already dead. The man then reported the incident to the TNBB officer. “I covered the corpse by newspaper and reported to TNBB,” he said. Previously an employee of TNBB, I Wayan Suanegara, 38, also had seen the woman lying naked at 05.30 am Local Time when performing morning run. Because he considered her a crazy woman, this official ignored her. When found, the woman who alleged
to be a robbery victim laid in naked position with her left hand above her head. An earring remained stuck in the ear. Police once explored the site but could not find any clothes and they only encountered a pair of sandals alleged to belong to the victim. Chief of Detective Unit of Jembrana Resort Police, I Ketut Suparta, and Chief of Gilimanuk Harbor Police, Nyoman Suparta, said the identity of victim was not known and estimated she was a resident of outside Gilimanuk. Based on the results of medical examination at local community health center, there were no any signs of violence on the body. Only in the neck was found a sign of bondage of inner rubber tire. Estimated, the victim died at early morning. Meanwhile, Chief of Detective Unit has not dared to make sure that the woman was a victim of homicide. His team descended directly to the scene and said the forensic medical report was required to ensure the cause of death. Later on, the victim was transported to Negara Hospital last Friday afternoon. CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuelan cable television providers stopped transmitting a channel critical of President Hugo Chavez on Sunday, after the government cited noncompliance with new regulations requiring the socialist leader’s speeches be televised on cable. Radio Caracas Television, an anti-Chavez channel known as RCTV that switched to cable and satellite television in 2007 after the government refused to renew its over-the-air license, disappeared from TV sets shortly after midnight. RCTV was yanked from cable and satellite programming just hours after Diosdado Cabello, director of Venezuela’s state-run telecommunications agency, said several local channels carried by cable television have breached broadcasting laws and should be removed from the airwaves. Cabello warned cable operations on Saturday evening that they could find themselves in jeopardy if they keep showing those channels. “They must comply with the law, and they cannot have a single channel that violates Venezuelan laws as part of their programming,” he said. Several channels have not shown Chavez’s televised speeches when he orders all media to air them — a requirement under new regulations approved last month by the telecommunications agency, Cabello said. RCTV did not broadcast a speech by the president to his political supporters during a rally early on Saturday. The station’s removal from cable and satellite television prompted a cacophony of protests in Caracas neighborhoods as Chavez opponents leaned out apartment windows to bang on pots and pans. Others shouted epithets and drivers joined in, honking car horns. “They want to silence RCTV’s voice,” said Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the channel’s most popular talk show host. “But they won’t be able to because RCTV is embedded in the hearts of all Venezuelans.” The U.S. Embassy in Caracas expressed concern about the decision.
“Access to information is a cornerstone of democracy and provides a foundation for global progress. By restricting yet again the Venezuelan people’s access to RCTV broadcasts, the Venezuelan government continues to erode this cornerstone,” Embassy spokeswoman Robin Holzhauer said. Venezuela’s telecommunications agency has said in the past week that under new rules, two dozen local cable channels including RCTV must carry government programming when officials deem the measure necessary, just like channels on the open airwaves already do. Chavez often uses the measure to force all the country’s TV channels and radio stations to broadcast his speeches. Cabello said Saturday that other violations committed by cable channels include failing to warn viewers of sexual and violent content as well as broadcasting more than two hours of soap operas during the afternoon, which should be mostly dedicated to children programming. He did not specify which TV channels have purportedly violated the law, but RCTV said it was the target. It accused the agency of pressuring cable providers to drop channels that are critical of the government. The agency “doesn’t have any authority to give the cable service providers this order,” RCTV said in a statement. “The government is inappropriately pressuring them to make decisions beyond their responsibilities.” In denying RCTV a renewal of its over-the-air broadcast license, Chavez accused the station of plotting against his government and supporting a failed 2002 coup. In August, Chavez’s government forced 32 radio stations and two small TV stations off the air, saying some owners had failed to renew their broadcast licenses while other licenses were no longer valid because they had been granted long ago to owners who are now dead. Officials said they planned to take more stations off the air. Government figures say that as of 2008 about 37 percent of Venezuelan homes received cable television.
The 48 pilot whales stranded Saturday at Port Levy on South Island, but scores of volunteers joined Department of Conservation workers to refloat them off the shallow, muddy inlet, said the department’s community relations manager, Grant Campbell. It was the third mass stranding on the New Zealand coast this summer. Some 125 pilot whales died in the two other beachings, while 43 were returned to the ocean. Campbell said that in the latest incident, residents were quick to help after spotting the whales ap-
parently feeding in the inlet before they stranded. “It’s a very, very shallow bay in Port Levy, very muddy, so whether they were chasing food and got caught in the shallows, we don’t know,” he told The Associated Press. More than 80 people rallied to aid the mammals, and as the tide flowed in Sunday, “they began floating and we were able to push them out, and away they went,” Howden said. By later Sunday, the survivors had been shepherded into deeper waters by a couple of boats and were swimming away, Campbell said. Specialists will carry out autopsies on two of the dead whales Monday, before the 15 dead mammals are buried high up the beach, he said. Large numbers of whales become stranded on New Zealand’s beaches each summer as they pass by from Antarctic waters on their way to breeding grounds. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Hundreds gathered for the funeral of the archbishop of Haiti’s stricken capital Saturday, a rare formal ceremony that captured the collective mourning of a shattered nation where mass graves hold many of the dead. Meanwhile, as the U.N. said the Haitian government had declared an end to searches for living people trapped in the rubble, yet another survivor was saved. Rescuers said they reached Wismond Exantus by digging a narrow tunnel through the wreckage of a hotel grocery store where he was buried for 11 days. Exantus, who is in his 20s, was placed on a stretcher and given intravenous fluids as onlookers cheered. He later told The Associated Press he survived by diving under a desk during the quake and later consuming some cola, beer and cookies in the cramped space. “I was hungry, but every night I thought about the revelation that I would survive,” Exantus said from his hospital bed. Authorities have stopped short of explicitly directing all teams to halt rescue efforts, and hopeful searchers continued picking through the ruins. But U.N. relief workers said the shift in focus is critical to care for the thousands living in squalid, makeshift camps that lack sanitation. While deliveries of food, medicine and water have ticked up after initial logjams, the need continues to be overwhelming and doctors fear outbreaks of disease in the camps. “It doesn’t mean the government will order them to stop. SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea threatened war Sunday after South Korea warned of launching a pre-emptive strike if the North was preparing a nuclear attack — the latest salvo in a battle of rhetoric despite signs of improved cooperation across the militarized frontier. The North’s military said it would take prompt and decisive military action against any South Korean attempt to violate North Korea’s dignity and sovereignty and would blow up major targets in the South, including its command center. “Our revolutionary armed forces will regard the scenario for ‘pre-emptive strike,’ which the South Korean puppet authorities adopted as a ‘state policy,’ as an open declaration of war,” the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army said in a statement carried by the country’s official Korean Central News Agency. The North’s warning came in response to the South Korean Defense Minister Kim Tae-young’s remarks last week that the South should launch a pre-emptive strike on North Korea if there was a clear indication the country was preparing a nuclear attack. A South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae dismissed the North’s statement Sunday as a predictable reaction. Kim made similar remarks in 2008 when he was chairman of South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, prompting North Korea to threaten South Korea with destruction. Analysts in South Korea said the North’s latest statement reflected its intolerance of any chal-
lenge to its own security and the authoritarian regime leader Kim Jong Il but that the war of words was unlikely to derail attempts to improve relations. “The North has sent a clear message that it was ready for cooperation with South Korea, but it won’t tolerate it if South Korea touches on the prestige of its leader or its system,” said analyst Paik Hak-soon of the private Sejong Institute think tank near Seoul. The North’s isolated communist regime has reached out to the U.S. and South Korea in recent months in what could be an attempt to ease some of the pressure of U.N. sanctions imposed on the North after it conducted a nuclear test last year, its second to date. North Korea quit international talks on ending its nuclear programs in April last year, but has indicated its willingness to return to international disarmament negotiations if the sanctions are lifted. In a sign of the conflicting signals from Pyongyang, the North’s military renewed in Sunday’s statement the country’s commitment to improve inter-Korean relations. Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Seoul’s Dongguk University, said the South — led by a conservative government which has been more cautious in engaging
Pyongyang than preceding more liberal administrations — was also giving mixed signals. “South Korea appears to have not decided whether to grab the hand of North Korea’s conciliatory gestures,” Koh said. Last week, the two Koreas held talks on developing their joint industrial complex in the North’s border city of Kaesong, the most prominent symbol of inter-Korean cooperation. On Friday, the North unexpectedly offered to hold discussions between military officers in Kaesong this Tuesday to discuss border crossings, customs, and the use of mobile phones and the Internet for South Korean companies in the complex. South Korea plans to accept the North’s demand for dialogue but ask Pyongyang to set another date as the two sides had already agreed to meet on Feb. 1 in Kaesong to discuss the complex. “There is no reason to oppose the North’s proposal and we plan to reply on Monday,” a South Korean official said. He asked not to be identified because no official decision has been made yet. More than 110 South Korean factories at Kaesong employ some 42,000 North Korean workers to make everything from electronics and watches to shoes and utensils, providing a major source of revenue for the cash-strapped North.
JOS, Nigeria (AFP) – At least 150 bodies were recovered from wells after Muslim-Christian clashes in central Nigeria, a village head said Saturday, taking the unofficial death toll past 450. “So far we have picked 150 bodies from the wells. But 60 more people are still missing”, Umar Baza, head of Kuru Karama village near the city of Jos, told AFP by telephone. “We took an inventory of the displaced people from this village, sheltering in three camps, and we realise that 60 people can still not be accounted for,” he said. Kuru Karama is a Muslim enclave in a Christian region 30 kilometres (18 miles) south of Jos. The head of the Muslim volunteer team for the victims’ burial, Mohammed Shittu, said: “now we have 150 bodies in all, taken from the wells as from Thursday.”. At least 364 Muslims died in the clashes, according to figures provided by Muslim leaders, a spokesman for global rights watchdog Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Saturday. “As of yesterday (Friday), at least 364 Muslims have died in Jos, including those found in wells in Kuru Karama. This information was provided by Muslim officials in Jos,” the HRW’s Eric Guttschuss told AFP by telephone from Washington. “The Christian Association of Nigeria said that they have not compiled their estimates on death toll. Hopefully, they will do that before the weekend runs out,” he said. But earlier this week a Christian leader, the reverend Chung Dabo, secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Jos, told AFP that 55 Christians had died.. The unofficial death toll is estimated at 464. Earlier Saturday in a statement, HRW urged Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to order “an immediate criminal investigation into credible reports of a massacre of at least 150 Muslim residents” of Kuru Karama. Dozens of them were “stuffed down wells or in sewage pits,” HRW said in the statement.
The state government has given no official death toll for the violence, which broke out last Sunday in Jos, capital of Plateau State, and spread to nearby towns and villages. Some 18,000 people fled the fighting to take refuge in military barracks, churches and mosques around the city, according to the Red Cross, as the government called in the army to restore order. An AFP reporter in Jos Saturday saw scores of residents fleeing the city in cars and buses. Religious leaders and medical workers said they had counted 288 bodies by Wednesday, before the dead started to be recovered from Kuru Karama. Another 26 bodies were found and buried Saturday in a Jos cemetery. HRW quoted witnesses as saying groups of armed men — believed to be Christians — attacked the largely Muslim population of Kuru Karama on Tuesday morning. “After surrounding the town, they hunted down and attacked Muslim residents, some of whom had sought refuge in homes and a local mosque, killing many as they tried to flee and burning many others alive,” the statement said. Christian and Muslim leaders in Plateau State have both said the unrest owed more to the failure of political leaders to address ethnic differences than inter-faith rivalries. Jonathan pledged that the ringleaders responsible for the violence would be brought to justice, and ordered the army to take over security of the affected regions and sensitive neighbouring areas. Jos has been a hotbed of religious violence in Nigeria, whose 150 million people are divided almost equally between followers of the two faiths. An estimated 200 people were killed in religious clashes in the city in late 2008. Business was slowly picking up in Jos Saturday with more more shops opening and roadside hawkers displaying their wares, while long queues of residents scrambled for water at public taps. Although no military patrols were visible, checkpoints still remained.

JAKARTA - The Special Team of the national and regional police has arrested 13 suspects in money theft through hacked banks’ automatic teller machines (ATM), a police spokesman said. National Police Spokesman Insp. Gen. Edward Aritonang said here on Saturday that the suspects were arrested in Bali, Kalimantan and Medan (North Sumatra). “They are arrested in Bali, Kalimantan and Medan. There were 13 suspects,” he said. Police also confiscated evidence such as duplicators, ATM cards, stickers, personal identification numbers (PIN), bank account numbers, computers and a certain amount of money. Based on questioning it was known that the suspects had used four modus operandis in stealing
bank customers’ money at large banks’ ATMs. In their modus operandi, the suspects installed a skimming device into the ATM slots to copy information stored on the magnetic strip of customers’ cards and a spy camera to detect their PINs. Besides, they also designed something in the ATM slot so that it would cause customers’ cards to be stuck when they were inserted. In this case, they put a fake hot-line sticker for customers’ complaints that enable them to act as they were from banks’ customer services and asked the customers identity and PINs. The third modus operandi was that the suspects installed tweezers to squeeze customers’ cards and placed bogus operators to help remove the squeezed cards stole the customers’ cards’ information. The fourth modus operandi was
that the suspects copied information on the cards, including their PINs and then sold them Rp1 million for each data to ATM hackers. Edward said that police had up to Saturday received reports money theft from 36 bank customers which were scattered in Bali, Kalimantan and Jakarta. They were customers of national banks such as Bank Mandiri, Bank Central Asia (BCA), Bank BNI, Bank BII and BRI. Previously, some bank customers in Bali have reported that their money has been stolen by ATM hackers. They installed ATM skimming devices and spy cameras to steal information stored on the magnetic strip of customers’ ATM cards and duplicated them to rob customers’s accounts. Bank Indonesia said that the potential losses in the ATM scams of at least four national banks could reach Rp5 billion.
Three policemen and three mine workers were hurt in the ambush on a convoy of buses and land cruisers heading to the coastal city of Timika from the Grasberg mine, senior police officer Mada Aksanta told reporters. “We’re combing the area of the incident to gather evidence... we’re still investigating who the perpetrators are,” Aksanta said. One of the employees was a foreigner who received a wound near his left eye from flying glass, he added. YOGYAKARTA - The Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) would buy ‘Super Volcano’ warplanes from Brazil this year to replace OV-1s, Air Force Chief Vice Marshal Imam Sufaat said here Saturday. “We plan to buy 16 ‘Super Volcano’ planes or a squadron. We have submitted the budget to the government for the warplanes’ purchase, hopefully it will be approved,” Sufaat said at the Air Force Academy (AAU) here on Saturday. The plan was part of the Air Force’s efforts to rejuvenate its weaponry especially its war planes and to enforce the country’s Air Force strength, he said. In addition to Brazil-made planes, TNI AU is expected to receive three Sukhoi jet fighters from Russia. “Hopefully the three Sukhoi jets will arrive before October 2010. With the additional three Sukhois, TNI AU will have a total of 10
Sukhoi jets,” he said. TNI AU has submitted a total budget to buy 16 Sukhois or one squadron. However, its realization took time and needed funds, he said. “The procurement of Sukhois needs a big amount of funds because they are expensive. Britain to exit recession, but faces bleak recovery: economists Agence France-Presse
LONDON - An end to Britain’s longest recession on record will likely be confirmed this week but recovery for the debt-ridden nation — facing an election this year — will be far from smooth, economists warned. The Office for National Statistics will on Tuesday publish data expected to reveal that Britain exited recession in the fourth quarter of 2009, analysts have widely forecast. A return to growth between October and December last year after six quarters of negative output will see Britain following all other major economies out of recession. Economists predict growth of 0.4 percent in the fourth quarter. However, the future for the British and wider global economy is far from rosy, with the IMF and the United Nations recently warning of a possible renewed or “double-dip recession” this year. Those worries have been heightened in Europe, where several nations — notably Greece and Portugal — are struggling to cope with soaring public debt. “It’s definitely worth pointing out that, even if we do exit recession, the hard work will only just be beginning,” said Colin Ellis, an economist at Daiwa Capital Markets Europe. “Shrinking the massive budget deficit, getting private sector employment growing and generating genuine wage growth will be big challenges over the next few years.” Ellis also told AFP: “There is
a risk of a double-dip (recession) during 2010.” British state borrowing worsened to a record deficit in December, official data revealed last Thursday, sparking speculation about public spending cuts and taxation hikes in the months ahead. Britain has borrowed 119.9 billion pounds (136.7 billion euros, 193.3 billion dollars) in its current financial year which began in April, compared with 63.6 billion pounds recorded at the same stage of last year. The government meanwhile predicts that it will have to borrow a record 178 billion pounds during 2009/2010. The state of Britain’s troubled economy has become the key battle ground ahead of a general election due by June and which is likely to see Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Labour Party defeated by the main opposition Conservatives, according to recent polls. Whichever party wins power, Britain faces a decade of economic pain, experts warned. “The UK economy has moved out of a decade of debt and into a decade of painful readjustment,” analysts at financial group Ernst and Young warned in a key report published earlier this month. “After years of relying on do-
mestic spending and borrowing the economy now needs to rebalance towards saving and exporting, or risk stagnating,” said the study by the group’s Independent Treasury Economic Model (ITEM) Club. Gross domestic product (GDP) will meanwhile “struggle” to reach 1.0 percent this year, they said. “The UK is facing another challenging year,” added chief economic adviser Peter Spencer. “We are no longer in a position to borrow — the massive debts that we racked up in the last decade now need to be repaid. The consumer is completely cashed out — with consumer spending likely to increase by just 0.4 percent this year.” The economy, which is also struggling with high unemployment caused by the financial crisis, has contracted for six quarters in a row — its longest recession since records began in 1955. Finance minister Alistair Darling recently admitted that Britain’s recession would be deeper than thought — with the economy predicted to have shrunk 4.75 percent in 2009 compared with a prior official estimate of 3.5 percent. The nation’s economy is expected to grow by 1.0-1.5 percent in 2010, Darling added, matching his previous forecast.
ZURICH - Pressure for bank reforms is set to grow at a gathering of the world’s elite at Davos this week, shortly after US President Barack Obama set the stage with an offensive against Wall Street excesses. However, emboldened by a growing economic recovery, bankers — who were conspicuously missing from last year’s World Economic Forum meeting in the Swiss mountain resort — are set to fight back in vocal fashion, experts said. Excessive risk taking by the banking industry has been cited as one of the causes of the recent financial and economic crises and regulators have been tasked by top politicians to draw up new rules to rein the banks in. But as the world slowly emerges from recession — the worst since the Great Depression — opposing voices from banks on these new rules are growing louder. “The lobbying is getting very strong and the political will can be diluted quickly,” warned Cedric Tille, professor of economics at the Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies in Geneva. “It’s urgent to put these reforms in place,” said Tille, a former economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Proponents of the reform would find an ally in Obama, who announced plans on Thursday to prevent banks or financial institutions in the United States from owning, investing in or sponsoring hedge fund or private equity funds. The new rules would force firms to choose between activities such as trading in stocks and sometimes risky financial instruments for their own benefit — and traditional activities, like making loans and collecting deposits. The Group of 20 (G20) leading developed and emerging economies has also asked for new rules to clean up the sector, with more stringent requirements on capitalization and debt ratios due to be introduced by the end of 2012. Rainer Skierka, an analyst at Bank Sarasin, noted that the new rules were unpopular since
they could generate costs and cut the profit margins of banks. In addition, banks would be required to set aside more money as capital — reducing the funds they could use for investment to generate better returns. “Banks are doing intense lobbying as the new demands on capital reduces their profits,” said Tille. Bankers are likely to be more vocal in their lobbying against the reforms, said Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Global Insight. “A lot of bankers can’t wait to get out of the control of governments. Some feel so stifled,” he said. “They are going to do everything they can to resist the reforms. They will be more vocal this year,” he added. Bankers and finance ministers are to sit together on Wednesday to discuss “structural deficiencies (that) persist in the regulation of systemic financial risk,” according to a programme of the Davos meeting circulated by organisers. On Saturday, the focus will be on how the largest financial institutions in the world should be regulated. Central bankers like the European Central Bank’s JeanClaude Trichet as well as Egypt’s Finance Minister Youssef Boutros-Ghali and French Economy Minister Christine Lagarde, are expected to pile on the pressure, analysts said. Regulators have cautioned that reining in banks is becoming a key issue, particularly now that governments have shown that they were willing to bail out ailing banks in a financial crisis. “Before the crisis, you didn’t know how states were going to behave in the event of a crisis,” Switzerland’s central bank chief Jean-Pierre Roth observed recently before he retired. “After the crisis, the head of a major bank knows that in case of a major crisis in the future he can count on state backing, and that’s the parameter that has changed fundamentally.” The pre-crisis ambiguity had broadly encouraged greater prudence, he added. Roth cautioned that its loss now posed a “fundamental problem,” hence the need for regulation to take over.

Bloody frontlines of Afghanistan arrive in Sundance Agence France Presse
PARK CITY, Utah – The bloody frontlines of America’s war in Afghanistan have been transplanted to the Sundance Film Festival thanks to a gripping documentary vying for honors here. “Restrepo,” is a visceral account of a year spent embedded alongside 15 American soldiers stationed at a remote mountain outpost in the Korengal Valley, where Taliban attacks are almost a daily occurrence. Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington’s film is an intimate portrait of soldiers at war, capturing the chaos of battle, the spartan living conditions and the boredom of moments when the bullets aren’t flying. While accounts from journalists embedding with US forces are nothing new, few reporters or filmmakers have spent an entire yearlong rotation with a unit as Junger and Hetherington did between 2007 and 2008. “Actually no journalist has done that, not for an entire deployment,” said Hetherington, a photographer who won the World Press Photo Competition in 2007 for his picture of an exhausted soldier following a battle in Korengal.
“We just did something very obvious, and we decided to spend a very long time with them, as much as we could,” he told AFP. “There are 22 million American families with sons or brothers or husbands that have served or are serving in the military and they want to know what those people go through. This film shows it.” Junger, a regular contributor to Vanity Fair magazine and best-selling author of “The Perfect Storm,” said the idea of the film “was to make a movie that was completely about the soldiers’ experience.” “They can’t ask a general, ‘Why are we in the Korengal Valley, Sir?’ So we did not interview generals. They can’t talk to politicians, they can’t see their families so we didn’t do any of that in the movie,” Junger explained. “We didn’t even want an outside narrator.” The only voices in the film are those of the soldiers, 24/7. “They let us into their lives and they accepted the fact that we would film everything and they never hid anything from us,” Hetherington said. Nothing was off-limits, not even the death early in the documentary of soldier Juan Restrepo, whom the base the troops are defending is named after.

LOS ANGELES – While Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock’s chances for Academy Award gold were advanced with their trophies at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the blockbuster “Avatar” may have felt a touch blue. The computer-assisted performances in James Cameron’s “Avatar” didn’t make the cut for SAG nominations. But the groundbreaking sci-fi film remains a strong best-picture contender for the Oscars in March. For Bridges of “Crazy Heart,” Bullock of “The Blind Side” and for SAG supporting-acting honorees Mo’Nique of “Precious” and Christoph Walt of “Inglourious Basterds,” there’s reason to suspect the Oscar ceremony will be a happy rerun of Saturday’s SAG Awards and last Sunday’s Golden Globes. LONDON – People with early lung cancer who quit smoking could double their chances of surviving, a new study says. Until now, there has been little proof that quitting smoking after developing lung cancer makes any difference to survival. British researchers analyzed previous data from 10 studies examining how long smokers survived after being diagnosed with lung cancer. People with lung cancer who continued smoking had a 29 to 33 percent chance of surviving five years. But those who kicked the habit had a 63 to 70 percent chance of being alive after five years. On Friday, his effort paid off. He posted the first live Twitter post truly from space. “Hello Twitterverse!” he wrote. “We r now LIVE tweeting from the International Space Station — the 1st live tweet from Space! :) More soon, send your ?s” Before, orbiting astronauts had to send such Twitter updates by e-mail to Mission Control in Houston. Then controllers posted the tweets. The International Space Station crew can now use an on-board laptop to reach a desktop computer at Mission Control, and thereby browse the Web. This remote

It’s expected to provide a big morale boost. “Long-duration astronauts, they commit to spending months away from family and friends. They said patients and their families should now be told about the study results, “because the potential benefit is great.” The research might also provide some clues on how smoking causes cancer. MELBOURNE, Australia – U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro’s bid for back-toback Grand Slam titles ended in a fourth-round, five-set loss to No. 14 Marin Cilic on Sunday. Justine Henin’s run in her first Grand Slam tournament in two years continued with a 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-3 win over fellow Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, placing her on course for a quarterfinal match against Nadia Petrova. Petrova, who had a stunning 6-0, 6-1 win over U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters in the third round, made it back-to-back upset victories when she ousted third-ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to reach the final eight. Maria Kirilenko added another big Russian name to her list of victims when No. 2 Dinara Safina retired from their fourth round match when was down 5-4, serving at 30-40. “It’s been great moment for myself,” Henin said. “It’s a great feeling to be back, been a great fight and thank you.” The seven-time Grand Slam winner dominated the first-set tiebreaker after saving three set points in the 12th game. After dropping the second set, Henin broke Wickmayer’s serve to open the deciding third set and was on top after that. Del Potro struggled most of the way through the 4hour, 38-minute match against Cilic, who exacted a measure of revenge with the victory. DENVER – Carmelo Anthony scored four of his 30 points in overtime and added 11 rebounds and the Denver Nuggets beat the New Orleans Hornets 116-110 on Saturday night for their season-high sixth straight victory. Kenyon Martin added 20 points and 14 rebounds, and Chauncey Billups had 20 points and nine assists, and Arron Afflalo had 19 points, hitting two 3-pointers in overtime. Chris Paul had 26 points, seven in overtime, and 10 assists for the Hornets. Darius Songaila added a season-high 20 starting in place of the injured David West. Bruyneel said Armstrong was in better condition than last year, when he returned from a three-and-a-halfyear retirement, and also happier with his new team. He’s a lot different than last year. CARSON, Calif. – The United States opened its 2010 schedule of World Cup warmups with a resounding thud. Fellow World Cup qualifier Honduras thoroughly outplayed a second-string U.S. lineup, winning an exhibition game 3-1 Saturday night. Defender Jimmy Conrad was ejected by Mexico referee Benito Archundia in the 17th minute for his second yellow card, given for an off-the-ball foul in the penalty area. Carlos Pavon, who put a penalty kick over the crossbar during last October’s World Cup qualifier, converted his kick this time in the 19th. “It’s tough to fight back, especially a man down,” said left back Jonathan Bornstein, the closest to a regular in the U.S. lineup. “The match just didn’t go our way this time.” Before a pro-Honduras crowd of 18,626, Jerry Palacios split the defense to beat goalkeeper Troy Perkins with a 6-yard header off Pavon’s cross in the 37th following a long ball by Emilio Izaguirre. Roger Espinoza made it 3-0 in the 53rd, slotting the ball in from 8 yards. Clarence Goodson scored in the 70th for the 14th-ranked U.S., using an elbow to outleap goalkeeper Donis Escobar for a corner kick. ROME - Roma captain Francesco Totti hailed his first ever goal against Juventus in Turin as “destiny” in the wake of his side’s thrilling late win against the Old Lady. Totti started on the bench but was on within five minutes for the injured Luca Toni. He scored an equaliser in the second half from the penalty spot before John Arne Riise nodded a late winner in stoppage time. “It was destiny, a goal that was worth three points and I’m so happy to have extended Roma’s lead over Juve. “The team spirit was crucial as we are going through a positive period and faced them openly to earn the win.” The Roma legend clocked up another personal triumph by equalling the Serie A goalscoring record of former Lazio star Beppe Signori.

NEW YORK – Juan Manuel Lopez wants to follow his idol Felix Trinidad as the next great Puerto Rican fighter, winning a handful of titles as he climbs through the weight divisions. JuanMa captured No. 2 in style on Saturday night. He used a thudding right hand and a flush left hook to knock out Steven Luevano in the seventh round, taking his WBO belt in the main event of a featherweight doubleheader. Earlier in the night, fellow rising star Yuriorkis Gamboa defended his WBA belt with a second-round stoppage of Rogers Mtagwa. “We saw the video and we knew the right was there for me all night,” said Lopez, who fought a more disciplined fight than his last time out, when he was taken to the brink by Mtagwa. “I could feel I was landing it, and I was very surprised he took so many punches. He took a lot of punishment.” Luevano (37-2-1), who defended his title five times, struggled to keep his distance. He’s a counter-puncher by nature and never had a chance to throw a counter, wilting under JuanMa’s intense pressure. The charismatic Puerto Rican staggered the champion early in the seventh before finally trapping Luevano against the ropes, unleashing a combination capped by a clean left near the corner. Luevano staggered to his feet by the count of 10, but referee Benji Esteves wisely waved it off.
“He’s a great fighter and a great hitter,” said Luevano, his left eye swelling shut. “I was blocking that right punch during the entire fight, and he got one in.” Lopez (28-0, 25 KOs) had looked dominant at junior featherweight, and he was simply overwhelming at 126 pounds. He didn’t have to drain himself nearly as much to make weight and showed that he can be a force in a crowded division that includes Chris John. “He fought a really intelligent fight,” said promoter Bob Arum, who would eventually like to put Lopez and Gamboa against each other. “Let’s see if there’s any featherweights left standing, I want to wipe them all out, so there’s nobody left but those two guys.” The outcome certainly delighted a reunion of great Puerto Rican fighters. Trinidad, the former five-time champion, drew the first big roar from a crowd of more than 5,000 that packed the smaller theater at Madison Square Garden. He was followed by another roar for former welterweight titleholder Miguel Cotto, whose late father was honored before the main event with a 10-bell salute and moment of silence.
Cotto, who is coming off a loss to Manny Pacquiao, was in town to work on an agreement to challenge 154pound titleholder Yuri Foreman on June 12. Cotto would be reclaiming his annual date on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day parade in New York. Despite all the star power in the house, including former heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis, Gamboa (17-0, 15 KOs) may have stolen the show with his electrifying display. The 2004 Olympic gold medalist from Cuba did damage with his first blow, a counter-punching left that stunned Mtagwa in the middle of the ring. Gamboa then knocked the granite-chinned Mtagwa down with 15 seconds left in the round, and the Tanzanian-born challenger never looked the same.
