Bali News Layung ing Bumi Tidar Fragmentary When human greed leads to disaster PERFORMANCE fragmentary presented by Grasak Yakso Dewo Traditional Community Arts, Sawunggalih, Magelang, Central Java, at Ratna Kanda Stage, last Saturday (Jun 19) night, deserved a positive appreciation from the connoisseurs of arts in Bali. Dozens of young teenagers from Bumi Tidar, Magelang, were not only masterful in moving their body into plastic and aesthetic dance movement, but also intelligent in packaging issues and social phenomena sticking out in Indonesia through the language of movements. Layung ing Bumi Tidar Dance whose movement of dance was beautifully composed by R. Rakhmad Murti Waskito and musical accompaniment arranged by Suwandi, for example, plainly denuded the greed of human beings in this country. In order to satisfy individual interests, they would not hesitate to exploit the nature as they liked. Jungles were slashed all out. Aridity extended everywhere. Reckless and selfish actions outraging the nature and devastating the harmonization of the existing ecosystem was no longer unthinkable. When the greed of human beings continued beyond the control, the nature would even get furious. As consequence, various disasters would widespread. Long drought would provide a sad story that forced people to only mourn sadly and to feel sorry for them. Self-criticism perfectly packaged through the language of plastic motion indeed offered a long contemplation for anyone who watched the performance with duration approximately more than one hour. At least, the art presentation displayed by young artists led by Shinta Febriani has sprinkled a moral message to recipients in Bali to be more prudent in treating the nature. If human beings are reckless to outrage the nature, they should get ready to reap disasters. (ian)

Both dances were vying against each other to become the best winning the sympathy of the audiences. Both art troupes appearing that night presented a new creation dance that had not been widely recognized by art lovers in Bali. Ngruwat Dance displayed by the envoy of Denpasar unraveled the story of fortitude, strength and purity of the heart of Sahadewa. Heroic story of the youngest son of the Pandavas was explored in the form of dynamic dance movements and graced by duel action between Sahadewa and the Goddess Durga over the command of the Lord Krishna. Open stage worth IDR 2 billion set to be built Gianyar (Bali Post) -
Dream of Gianyar Regency as a hub of various arts but does not have a representative venue for organizing a colossal art performance will be realized in the near future with an amphitheater (open stage). With the existence of this open stage, all arts and entertainment events usually using the stage in the Astina Square will be directed to this open stage in years to come. Even, the capacity of the stage made is almost equal to the open stage at Denpasar Art Center. Such development plan once worried the Gianyar Customary Village community regarding to the catus pata (central crossroad) concept existing in the north side of the building, where the road from the south direction situated right in front of cultural hall. As planned, the road will
also be made into a stage that will be elevated as high as 75 cm. However, the road is still passable by vehicles when there is no activity in the stage. Meanwhile, the Regent of Gianyar Tjok Oka Artha Ardana separately expected the development of open stage built through the Regional Budget of Gianyar Regency Government could become the vehicle for artists and humanists to develop and engender their new creations in the field of arts and culture. Meanwhile the younger musicians are Dibia Suanjaya on keyboard and Yande Subawa on guitar also who arranged the poems to become a song. Their success in combining the power of poem and music harmonically created a new art piece. Former Priest Found Dead in Cows Cage Expected Physically Abused Amlapura (Bali Post)-
On Sunday (20/6) a former priest I Gede Jati (60) found dead at 6.30 am in a cows cage owned by Ketut Kanten at Banjar Asah Teben, Datah, Karangasem. The victim’s family is suspecting the priest from Asah Dulu, Datah was dead because of being abused as the victim’s face is swollen. One of the victim’s family in Asah, Nyoman Putu Sumana (42) said the body was first founded by Ni Luh Ngungsi (36). At that time the witness was going to tap palm wine from a palm tree. In Datah, it is normal for women to climb palm trees or papyrus trees to get palm wine. When witness was passing by, it was seen the victim’s body was frozen. This was then told to the victim’s family. The news spread quickly and later on lots of people came to the scene as they were shocked of the founded body. The dead body was then brought to the family’s house. The family reported the case to the Abang Police Sector De-
partment. After 2 hours the police came to the scene and did an investigation. A doctor from Abang Community Health Center came to examine the dead body. But until now police officers in Karangasem have not given any confirmation of what caused the death. Putu Sumana said, the family could not believe what happened to the unmarried victim. All this time he never had serious illness. 8 hours before around 9 pm on Saturday (19/6), the victim was still seen walking about. The victim also came by to one of his family’s ceremony. “At around 9 pm he still managed to drink one glass of wine then headed home. Other residents also saw him walking on the roads of Asah Dulu,” Sumana explained. It was said the body was found in a cow’s cage owned by Ketut Kanten. In that cage, a resident said there are two cows and one was freed as its nose rope was broken. (013)

WARSAW (Reuters) – Bronislaw Komorowski, the candidate of Poland’s ruling pro-business Civic Platform (PO), won most votes in the first round of the presidential election but results pointed to a tight run-off vote on July 4. Komorowski, who is speaker of parliament and also Poland’s acting president, won 41 percent of the vote against 37 percent for his main rival, right-wing opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, results from 94 percent of polling stations showed. Investors and financial markets would prefer a Komorowski victory because he would be expected to work smoothly with Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s economically liberal government in tackling Poland’s big budget deficit and preparing the country for eventual euro adoption. Komorowski also shares Tusk’s vision of a Poland firmly anchored in the European mainstream, working closely with Germany and other EU partners and trying to improve long troubled ties with Russia, its communist-era overlord. The election was forced by the death of Kaczynski’s identical twin brother, President Lech Kaczynski, along with 95 others, mostly senior political and military officials,
in a plane crash in Russia on April 10. VETO FEARS Kaczynski is a combative nationalist opposed to joining the euro any time soon and distrustful of the EU, Russia and Germany. He has also urged stimulus packages to counter the economic slowdown but Tusk has followed more cautious policies. Poland’s relations with Berlin, Moscow and Brussels nosedived during Kaczynski’s stint as prime minister in 2006-07, when his brother Lech as president reinforced Warsaw’s image in the European arena as a difficult country to work with. SEOUL (AFP) – South Korea detected a high level of xenon gas — a by-product of atomic tests — two days after the North claimed last month to have staged a successful nuclear experiment, officials said Monday. North Korea announced on May 12 it had conducted a nuclear fusion reaction, prompting scepticism in the South at the time because of the technical difficulty inherent in the process. Xenon is produced during the nuclear fission process. Monday’s Chosun Ilbo newspaper said the xenon readings taken near the border raised the likelihood that the North had carried out some sort of small-scale nuclear test aimed at developing fusion technology. “The amount of xenon detected in the air at the Geojin monitoring site in Goseong county on May 14 was eight times more than normal,” a science and education ministry official told AFP on condition of anonymity. The official said the ministry could not determine the reason for the abnormally high level of xenon, a gas that occurs in the atmosphere in trace amounts. “There was no tremor — which
usually goes with nuclear explosions — detected at the time,” the official said. “Xenon may have come from a nuclear reactor elsewhere or due to a reason we have yet to fully understand.” The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, affiliated to the ministry, also confirmed the detection of a high level of xenon on May 14 but declined to elaborate. A foreign ministry spokesman also confirmed that xenon had been detected in May at Geojin but said it was not linked to a nuclear test, given the absence of a tremor. The spokesman did not say what had caused the gas. South Korean scientists used xenon readings to confirm the North’s first nuclear test on October 9, 2006. The North staged a second test in May 2009. Nuclear fusion potentially promises clean and limitless energy but can also be employed to make hydrogen
bombs. The North’s announcement last month did not link the alleged fusion breakthrough to its atomic weapons programme. Pyongyang’s official media reported on May 12 that the North’s scientists, using their own technology, had conducted a nuclear fusion reaction. “The successful nuclear fusion marks a great event that demonstrated the rapidly developing cutting-edge science and technology of (North Korea),” said party newspaper Rodong Sinmun. South Korean experts doubted that the North — which suffers persistent power shortages in everyday life — had made major progress in the process. Yang Hyung-Lyeol, of South Korea’s state-funded National Fusion Research Institute, said at the time the North may have begun operating a small-scale magnetic nuclear fusion device. But Yang said there would be no comparison with a major project in which the South is involved — the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor project to build a fusion power plant by the mid 2030s.

LONDON, United Kingdom (AFP) – A British marine has died of injuries sustained in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said Monday, taking the country’s total military death toll in the conflict to 300. “It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm the death of a marine from 40 Commando Royal Marines, part of Combined Force Sangin,” the MoD said in a statement. It added that he died in hospital
in Birmingham, central England, on Sunday after being seriously injured in an explosion in Sangin, Helmand province, on June 12. In response to the grim landmark, Defence Secretary Liam Fox again stressed that he hoped to pull British troops out of Afghanistan once Afghans can provide sufficient security and governance for themselves. “The last nine years have seen British forces at the forefront of the campaign, for the last five working hard in one of the most challenging
areas of the country building Afghan capacity to secure and govern their own country — a process which ultimately will allow us to bring our forces home,” he said. The head of the armed forces, Jock Stirrup, added: “In theatre today, our people will be more determined than ever to deliver their task of supporting Afghans to build for their own future.” The name of the dead marine has not yet been released although his family has been informed of his death.

UK’s Prince William celebrates 28th birthday LONDON – Britain’s Prince William is celebrating his 28th birthday in training with the country’s Royal Air Force. The second-in-line to the British throne returned Sunday from a visit to charities in Botswana and Lesotho, and a trip to watch England’s soccer team Friday at South Africa’s World Cup with younger brother Prince Harry. Two Britons on board missing India to push US for Bhopal boss extradition plane in African jungle SYDNEY (AFP) – Australia vowed to leave “no stone unturned” on Monday after a plane carrying two Britons and several Australian mining bosses went missing over dense jungle in western Africa. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd promised full diplomatic and consular assistance after the twin turboprop plane carrying tycoon Ken Talbot and other top personnel from Sundance Resources disappeared on Saturday. “This is deeply concerning to all of us,” Rudd told reporters. “All of our diplomatic and consular resources are being dedicated to this... we will leave literally no stone unturned in our efforts to try and help what is a concerning set of developments for these families.” The plane was carrying two people from France, two Britons and an American, as well as two crew, from Cameroon’s capital Yaounde to the Yangadou mine in
neighbouring Congo, local authorities said. The CASA C-212 plane lost contact with ground controllers shortly after take-off on Saturday morning. Cameroonian authorities suspended their search, involving four search planes and a helicopter, as night fell on Sunday. Talbot is a non-executive director of Sundance, an iron ore miner, with estimated wealth of 965 million dollars (840 million US), according to BRW business magazine’s latest rich list. Reports said the truck driver’s son first made his fortune through a network of pubs before founding successful mining company Macarthur Coal. However, he left Macarthur over corruption charges and is due to go on trial in August. Indonesian killer ‘annoyed’ over sacking Agence France-Presse
JAKARTA - A man accused of killing an elderly Japanese couple in their Indonesian home said Monday he was “annoyed” at being sacked as their gardener, but had not meant to stab them to death. Yasuwo Hara, 69, was stabbed in the stomach four times and his wife, Mizue, 67, in the neck and stomach Thursday at their home in southern Jakarta, senior police officer Gatot Edy Pramono said. The couple’s former gardener, Cecep Abdullah, 22, was arrested within hours while his accomplice, Iwan Iriawan, 18, was caught on Sunday, he added. “I wanted to rob them because I needed money... I had no inten-
tion to kill them,” Abdullah told a press conference organised by police. “I was annoyed. I’d worked as a gardener for only a month and was fired because I couldn’t fit into the job.” Iriawan said Abdullah had promised to buy him a motorcycle if he joined him in the crime. “I didn’t do anything, I was only holding the knife. Cecep was the one who did the killing,” he said.
The brutality of the crime — Mizue’s neck was savagely slashed — has shocked Jakarta’s Japanese community. The Haras had worked in Indonesia for many years and reportedly ran a scholarship fund to help poor Indonesians go to university. Pramono said the stabbing occurred after the husband tried to protect his wife from the knifewielding intruders. “Nothing was taken. The perpetrators panicked and ran away,” he said. The suspects allegedly snuck into the couple’s house through the garage and attacked them as they were eating dinner.

BOGOR - Four teenagers were missing after being carried away by water current at Cianteun River in Bogor district, West Java, on Sunday. They were carried away by water current at around 01.00 p.m. on Sunday while trying to rescue two children who fell into the river, Budi Aksomo, chief of the Bogor district quick reaction team (TRC)
said. “After rescuing the two children, the four teenagers fell into the river and were carried away by water current,” he said. He said around 100 people from the TRC, the Bogor district fire department and the local branch of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) joined the search for the four missing teenagers. By Sunday evening the rescue workers focused their search on the
location where the teenagers fell into the river, he said. He said the rescue workers planned to comb the river on Monday morning if the four teenagers who hailed from Moyan Cimangir village, Cibunbulang subdistrict, Bogor district, were not found by Sunday night. The four are identified as Syarif bin Fandi (15), Yogi bin Jaed (16), Ada bin Rosadi (16) and Indra bin Ana (17).

DENPASAR - Provincial and regency governments are expected to give particular attention to the culture of Bali. Many classical dances were not known because they were not interested by local residents. “It is a bad precedent for Balinese people that do not know about their culture,” he said. Because of the lack of art training, the knowledge on the arts and cultural richness became minimal. Consequently, they were not interested in them. This matter was feared to happen to new generation of young Balinese seeking out cultural identity that was not necessarily suited to the conditions of Balinese culture framed by tradition and Hinduism. “There have been many Balinese young people that do not understand about community of art perpetrators and government had to address the situation by returning to intensify the cultural counseling, especially about the arts. In the decade of 1980s, such development was felt until the nook and cranny of villages. But, now only particular governments routinely holding and nurturing the prospective artists group. However, it was not comprehensively performed as by Denpasar. “Once again, please maintain and preserve the culture of Bali. Do not let people of Bali until not knowing about their identity,” he expected with a serious expression. (029)

Denpasar – Telkomsel held a tryout of long term evolution (LTE) or known as the four generation (4G) simultaneously in three cities, Jakarta, Medan, and Denpasar on Monday, June 21st 2010. In the tryout, video conference and video streaming was conducted and introduction of the new technology, 3D Telkomsel streaming using the 4G technology. At the same time, Telkomsel was also conducting a test on the new dual carrier HSPA+ which has 42 Mbps speed in two locations which is Denpasar and Medan. Balinese Wedding The pawiwahan (marriage, weddings of a Hindu couple) is a very important part of Balinese social life. The ritual generally takes place in the home of the groom, a further confirmation of the typical patriarchal inclinations of Balinese culture, and is per- formed by a priest. The newlyweds to be, dressed in very colorful and refined garments, worn only for the day of the wed- ding, will withdraw in prayer in the family temple. This is followed by the presentation of offerings in the pelinggih and by a series of ritual gestures. A very typical moment in the ceremony occurs when the bride offers the groom several different beverages: a conventional way to reiterate that the woman. as a wife, commits herself to obeying her husband and to lovingly care for him for the rest of their lives. Many Balinese marriages are still prearranged or negotiated, though young men may also “kidnap” their wives, and mixed-caste marriages are increasingly common. Marriage customs differ from caste to caste and village to village, but all Balinese marriage practices share fundamental similarities. There are basically two ways to get married on Bali, ‘ngerorod’ and ‘mapadik’. Ngerorod This is marriage by elopement, in which the prearranged honeymoon precedes the wedding ceremony. Since it’s otherwise quite expensive to marry on Bali, ‘ngerorod’ is becoming more and more popular. It has particular appeal to the Balinese sense of theater. Balinese love a spectacular kidnapping in which friends of the suitor
capture a woman in the fields, on the road, or down by the river. Theatrics are paramount: she is expected to bite and kick her abductors in mock self-defense. These days it’s more stylish and fashionable for the woman to be whisked away in a hired sedan, and more often than not she goes willingly. The couple then repairs to a friend’s house stocked with provisions, offerings, and the bride’s wardrobe. The woman’s infuriated father sounds the alarm demanding to know what has become of his daughter. A search party is organized which eventually returns unsuccessful and exhausted. Meanwhile, the couple is consummating the marriage before special offerings (sesayut tabuh rah) have the time to wilt. These offerings alone make the marriage binding by customary law. Emissaries of the groom visit the bride’s father to argue the advantages of the union. Begrudgingly, the girl’s father gives in, after a suitable bride price has been agreed upon. The groom’s father must finance and conduct the marriage ceremony, welcoming the bride as a new daughter into the family. The actual public wedding, within 42 days of the staged kidnapping, is only an official confirmation of their union. They are already married in the eyes of the gods. Mepadik This is marriage by consent, in which an upper-class couple conducts a formal courtship. Since daughters were once regarded as property useful for attaining a family’s social and political goals, high-caste families tried to wed a
son to the daughter of a friend or relative so a blood bond would unite the resources of both families. Under no circumstances may a woman “marry down,” i.e., take a commoner. The preferred marriage is through a parallel patri-cousin, the father’s brother’s daughter. It has been noted that Triwangsa couples often get along so well because they are all first cousins. Traditionally, the man or his father journeys three times to the bride’s house with food and ‘sirih’. When the bride’s family visits, the groom’s father is obliged to give them food, ‘sirih’ is chewed (an ancient, ritualistic means of coming to agreement), and presents are exchanged. The groom then regularly visits the home of his prospective bride, presenting gifts and performing services for his future father-inlaw. The groom’s family arranges and pays for the wedding; the date set well in advance on a propitious day. Wedding guests are often entertained by professional storytellers and musicians. Enormously detailed rules govern dining and seating arrangements. Sometimes the bride’s family is not even invited. The actual ceremony varies. It could be very simple and short, presided over by a common temple ‘pemangku’, or it may be elaborate, expensive, and go on all day. Both the bride and groom dress in bright ‘songket’, with brocades of gold thread, and the woman’s hair is decorated with glittering gold flowers. Usually the bride and groom offer food to one another, then simulate such domestic duties such as washing, cooking rice, and cutting bamboo. Prayers are intoned, and then the couple eats together in public, feeding each other. This is an important symbolic act, as in former times only married men and women were allowed to eat food together in public. The priest then performs a ritual purification and blesses the couple. Neither rice nor flowers are thrown. Today there could very well be a Western-style buffet reception held afterward where speeches are offered by members of the two families. (BTN/Doc)

Denpasar – Neka Museum which is located in Ubud has 272 collections of keris, traditional Indonesian weapon and it is being placed in two special rooms. In addition to keris, there are also collections of paintings and statues. The total collections are 312 paintings and statues and placed in five rooms in the museum. Pande Wayan Suteja Neka, the founder of Neka Museum, said that the collections were gathered for over 50 years. “Several works from the olden age also placed in the museum. The owner willingly to put
their collection the Neka Museum because the keris will be protected and conserved in the museum,” he added. Suteja Neka was established as the member of keris expert council by the Secretary General of Keris Indonesia (SNKI), Wiwoho Basuki Tjokrohadiningrat. There is great hope that the collection can give comparison and motivation to the current keris maker. Neka said that at first, he bought 2keris in 1970’s which have the symbol of dragon and lion. The keris is coated with by gold by Nugroho Priyo Waskito from
Yogyakarta. He also said that after the ceremony in Penataran Pande Peliatan temple which was done on June 17th 2006, Neka decided to preserve the keris as one of the culture of Indonesia. Neka also learn from keris experts throughout Indonesia such as to KRHT Sukoyo Hadi Nugroho, which is now work as the keris curator in Neka Museum. Neka is also cooperating with the keris community in Yogyakarta, Surakarta, and Jakarta to add his collections. In 2006, Neka Museum added keris collection in addition to the paintings and statues collections.

PARIS - France might announce extra action to fight overspending in the coming months, a top official said on Monday against a background of unease on financial markets over debt in the eurozone. At the beginning of June, the centre-right government announced that it intended to find 100 billion euros (124.0 billion dollars) in the next three years, achieving half of this by cutting spending and half with new revenues. The secretary general at the presidential palace, Claude Gueant, told the Financial Times newspaper that extra action might be announced by the autumn to ensure that the public deficit were reduced to 3.0 percent of gross domestic product by the end of 2013, as promised to European Union authorities, from an expected level of 8.0 percent this year. The debt crisis in Greece has set in train
deep concern about the state of public finances in several EU countries, and has also raised some concerns about the strength of some banks in Europe, partly because they hold much government debt. France has been largely unscathed so far by market pressures over overspending, but has announced strong action to correct its finances, as have many other European governments. “There will be other announcements. We have to do more of course — a lot more,” Gueant said. The government was preparing a budget for next year and a three-year spending plan which would “appear serious and determined.”

LONDON - Britain’s finance minister George Osborne confirmed Sunday that his emergency budget to be unveiled this week will include a banking levy. The chancellor of the exchequer said it would be part of the budget that he will announce in parliament on Tuesday. “What I’m determined to do is to make sure that the measures are tough but they’re also fair,” Osborne told BBC television. “What we’re clear about is that all parts of society are going to have to make a contribution. “I’m going to ask the banks to pay a bank levy so there will be a contribution from them,” he said. “We are going to have better regulated banks, it’s going to be tougher regulation and we’re also going to look at the structure of banking. “I’m perfectly prepared to say tough things to the financial services community,”
he added. Newspaper reports suggest that such a levy could raise between one and three billion pounds (1.5-4.4 billion dollars, 1.2-3.6 billion euros) each year. Unless Britain’s government takes action to deal with the budget deficit “then I am afraid we will find our country on the road to ruin,” Osborne said. “We will find higher interest rates, businesses going bust, unemployment rising and our living standards declining. I am not prepared to put up with that. “I see it as decisive action to deal with Britain’s record budget deficit,” he said. “We sit here as the country in Europe with the largest budget deficit of any major economy at a time when markets and investors and businesses look around the world at countries that can’t control their debts. “We have got to deal with that. In that sense it is an unavoidable budget.”

TOKYO - The Japanese government has decided to upgrade its economic growth forecast to around 2.6 percent for the year to March 2011, from an earlier projection of 1.4 percent, reports said Monday. investment had started to slow, the Nikkei newspaper said. The new forecast will be announced after the cabinet approves new fiscal rehabilitation measures on Tuesday, Kyodo News said, citing government sources. “The government has judged that the economy will continue to recover at a faster pace than initially anticipated, backed by strong exports to China and other Asian countries as well as firm personal consumption in Japan,” Kyodo said.

Papaconstantinou ruled out any return to Greece’s national currency. “No such outcome exists. JAKARTA, Indonesia – The discovery of three dead Javan rhinos has intensified efforts to save one of the world’s most endangered mammals from extinction, with an electric fence being built Monday around a new sanctuary and breeding ground. With only about 50 of the species left in the wild — all but a handful living in one national park in western Indonesia — conservationists are even talking about taking the rare step of relocating some of the 5-ton animals to spread out the population and give the Javan rhino a better chance to survive. Drought and proximity to an active volcano in the densely forested

The greatest threat they face today is from poachers, habitat destruction and competition for food with other species, according to conservationists. Rhino horns have long been a popular ingredient in traditional Chinese medicines, fetching tens of thousands of dollars each.
FOR years and years now, millions of sun worshippers across the country would hit the beaches during summer to work on the perfect, golden tan. However, the advent of indoor tanning salons now allows Americans to sport a sun-kissed look year-round. And as more and more people pursue a perpetual summer-style tan, dermatologists have begun noticing a significant rise in skin cancer incidents, especially among young women. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, still makes up just 3 percent of all skin cancers, and results in about 8,000 deaths a year, according to the National Cancer Institute. But three factors have doctors alarmed: The rates of this cancer are rising; it has become the most common cancer for young people; and many of the cases result from the preventable, but addictive, behavior of indoor suntanning. “In the last few decades, it’s certainly been on the rise. And some people think that may be a result of behavior, and UV exposure,” said Jennifer Stein, an assistant professor of dermatology at New York University’s Langone Medical Center. “This is a very serious cancer, and this is a behavior that’s preventable.” Tanning and cancer go hand-inhand
Without tanning beds, soaking
up the rays was limited to clear days in the summer. The invention of the tanning bed changed that, and throughout the 1990s, the rapid proliferation of tanning salons provided venues for millions of people to sunbathe regardless of weather, season, or time of day. Since 1992, the indoor tanning industry has grown five-fold, with 28 million indoor tanners in the United States supporting a billion-dollar-a-year business, said Maria Tsoukas, an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Chicago Medical Center. During that same period, melanoma rates have increased by 2 percent in the general population, Stein said. Amongst young women, who make up 71 percent of tanning salon customers, incidents of melanoma have increased by 2.2 percent, Stein said. Over that time, skin cancer also became the most common form of cancer for Americans ages 25-29, a group that traditionally shows very low cancer rates, Stein said. “We see a surprising number of young women coming in with melanoma, and a lot of them say they’ve used tanning beds,” Stein told LiveScience.com. “By far, by far, the majority of users of indoor tanning beds are young women.”

JOHANNESBURG – The most accomplished teams in World Cup history went in different directions, with five-time champion Brazil advancing to the second round and fourtime winner Italy tying with supposedly outmanned New Zealand. Although Brazil wasn’t exactly magical in a sometimes-brutal and highly physical match with Ivory Coast, it got two goals from Luis Fabiano on Sunday for a 3-1 victory. That boosted the Brazilians into the next round out of Group G. Italy wasn’t pleased at all with the latest surprising result at this year’s World Cup, held to a 1-1 draw by New Zealand, ranked 78th in the world. The defending champion Italians got their only goal in the Group F match in Nelspruit from the penalty spot, further exposing the team’s lack of finishing power up front. In the other group match, Paraguay beat Slovakia 2-0 in Bloemfontein. At Soccer City, Luis Fabiano scored two goals and Elano added the Brazilians dominated possession for most of the match. Luis Fabiano gave Brazil the lead in the 25th minute with a hard shot from close range that easily beat Ivory Coast goalkeeper Boubacar Barry. He added another in the 50th, but twice handled the ball on the play. “It’s difficult to deal with Fabiano, but it’s even more difficult if he’s allowed to use his hands,” Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said. “They got a goal free. That’s a 2-nil goal — that changed everything.” Luis Fabiano later admitted to the hand ball. “It’s true, the ball really touched my hand and then my shoulder,” Luis Fabiano said. “But it was involuntary. It was one of the greatest goals I’ve scored in my career.” Elano scored the third goal in the 62nd, but Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba pulled one back in the 79th with a header. Elano was carried off on a stretcher just a few minutes later with an ankle injury after a tough tackle.
Kaka was sent off with two yellow cards, the second coming in the 88th minute after Kader Keita ran into the Brazil playmaker and then fell to the ground clutching his face. “The red card was completely unfair,” Brazil coach Dunga said. It was New Zealand’s only shot on goal the entire match. Vincenzo Iaquinta equalized in the 29th from the penalty spot after Tommy Smith brought down Daniele De Rossi in the area. “Once again the opponent scored on their first chance,” Italy coach Marcello Lippi said. “We were able to control the game after that, but this was a match we should have won.” New Zealand is playing in only its second World Cup. The Kiwis lost all three matches in 1982, but have two points from two matches this time — the same as Italy. “I think that stopped the nation,” New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert said. “It’s the most incredible result we’ve had across the board. As a football coach, it’s way above anything we’ve achieved in the history of the game.” All four teams in Group F remain alive. Enrique Vera and Cristian Riveros each scored for Paraguay, which leads the group with four points after an opening 1-1 draw with the Italians.

LONDON – Roger Federer admits his bid to retain the Wimbledon title will be driven by the prospect of equalling Pete Sampras’s record of seven singles’ titles at the All England Club. Federer will walk onto Centre Court on Monday for his first round match against Colombia’s Alejandro Falla with Sampras firmly on his mind at the start of a potentially historic fortnight for the world number two. Sampras has been the finest exponent of grass court tennis in the Open era, but the American conceded last week that Federer has a great chance to shatter his Wimbledon record. The 28-year-old, who announced his arrival as a force at Wimbledon with a victory over Sampras here in 2001, has already beaten Sampras’s record of 14 grand slam singles titles and knows it would be remarkable achievement to draw level with the American’s tally of All England Club titles. “Being one title away from it, obviously I’m thinking about equalling Pete’s record a little bit because
I’m aware of the great things he achieved,” Federer said. “It’s nice of him to say I could beat his Wimbledon record but I don’t feel pressure from that because people compared me to Sampras even when I had no grand slams. “Obviously my game’s made for grass. Since I came here as a junior and since I beat Pete here in 2001 and I won my first Wimbledon here in 2003, I think every time I play, I’ll have a chance to win here. “But we all know how hard it is to win grand slam titles. You have to break it down and make it simple for yourself. I just have to try to win the first round before thinking about everything else.” Although Federer’s phenomenal record at Wimbledon was enough to guarantee him the number one seeding, ahead of world number one Rafael Nadal, he arrives in south-west London with serious questions over his form.

LOS ANGELES – Unlike the gritty comeback that gave the Los Angeles Lakers an NBA title against their rival Boston Celtics, this year’s victory parade will have no rallies. A compact championship parade — scaled back to rein in costs — is scheduled to stream through the streets of downtown Monday, minus the flashy rallies and side celebrations of past years. This year’s bash will begin at Staples Center and make its way down Figueroa Street to the edge of the University of Southern California campus. Much of downtown will be shut down for the event, and city officials are urging fans to use public transportation. Lakers officials expect between 500,000 and 2 million fans to line the two-mile route as the team celebrates its second straight NBA title and 16th overall, earned with a Game 7 victory over Boston on Thursday. Fans won’t be without a chance to celebrate with the team — players are expected to address the crowd from a sound-equipped flatbed float instead of making speeches at large crowd-drawing rallies, officials said. The more modest celebration will cost between $1.5 to $2 million — a tab the world champions plan to pay — to cover police overtime and other city services, team spokesman John Black said. The city had to reach out to private donors to fund the 2009 celebration so that taxpayers wouldn’t
have to foot the $1 million bill as Los Angeles faced a more than $500 million budget gap. An enormous rally at the end of last year’s parade at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum drew about 95,000 people. The Staples Center and Nokia Plaza, which were also once sites of parade-day revelry, will be locked and bars and restaurants will be closed during the parade Monday, AEG officials said.

Lorenzo clears head with ‘important’ Silverstone win Any thoughts that MotoGP title leader Jorge Lorenzo would be ‘lost’ without the intensity of fighting team-mate Valentino Rossi were well and truly put to rest at Silverstone on Sunday. A “confused” Lorenzo had finished a subdued second at the previous Mugello round, just one day after reigning world champion Rossi had broken his leg, but was back to his best for the first British Grand Prix at the Northamptonshire track since 1986. Mugello winner Dani Pedrosa provided spirited opposition on the opening lap, but from then on Lorenzo was in a class of his own, building a lead of over eight seconds. Lorenzo’s third victory from five races means he is now a huge 37 points ahead of new nearest rival Andrea Dovizioso, Pedrosa’s Repsol Honda team-mate, who finished second on Sunday. “This was an important day for me and an important win, because I felt so strong and I enjoyed riding my Yamaha so much,” said Lorenzo.
“I had a different feeling today; I felt that it was going to be a good race. It was quite hard to be fast at the start and the first lap with Dani was difficult, but once I got past him I felt very relaxed and comfortable. “I thought he would follow me for a bit longer but he didn’t and then I was on my own, so I just had to focus on myself; I didn’t even know who was behind me! “I never dreamt of taking three wins from five races but here we are and I am feeling very strong mentally at this moment. “The Beatles celebration was something fun for the fans, I love their music and I thought it was nice to make a homage to them, since we’re in England!” explained the 23year-old. “The start was a little bit interesting, but Jorge rode so well, kept his head and brought it home safely,” added team manager Wilco Zeelenberg.

podium so quickly, especially after yesterday which wasn’t the best for me,” said Spies, who qualified seventh. “I got a decent start but once I got by Dani and Simoncelli I just tried to stay on the back of the group battling for the podium.” By then the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider was himself coming under pressure from 2007 world champion Casey Stoner, but Spies wasn’t flustered and waited until lap 17 of 20 before taking fourth from de Puniet.

“Once I realised I could stay in contention I just tried to save the rear tyre as much as I could and it all worked out,” he explained. Already holding his best ever MotoGP position, Spies then had only fellow American Hayden separating him from a grand prix rostrum. Ignoring the discomfort of a small fracture in his left ankle that he aggravated in a Saturday crash, the 25year-old produced a daring overtake on Hayden at the fast Abbey Corner on the final lap. “That last lap was difficult to pass Nicky but I got a really good drive onto the back straight and tried to pass him at Stowe Corner but he came back by. On the next straight I managed to get by him and then had to ride quite defensively on the last part of the lap,” said Spies. “I was on the edge but I had to go for the podium and it worked out. It will be hard to duplicate this but right now I’ll let it sink in and make the most of it. But on this day I can say I was the third best rider in the world and it is a good feeling,” concluded Spies, who beat his previous MotoGP bets by two places.
