Appreciation of Balinese community to performance of Bali Police Chief H. Sutisna and Chief of Denpasar Metro Police I Gede Alit Widana continued to come. Police were considered successful to uncover the rape cases afflicting to five students of elementary school in Bali. Some activists caring about children and students even came directly to Bali Police Headquarters and met Chief Sutisna, last Monday (May 17). It has become the tasks of the National Police. Once the perpetrator was arrested, the promise of police to all mothers has been paid off,” he said while accepting the flowers from Sri Wahyuni. A number of high-ranking officials of Functional Group or Golkar Party allegedly deserted amid the chaos and they secretly met with the Regent of Tabanan Adi Wiryatama, the father of Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, a candidate winning the 2010 regent election in Tabanan. On the one hand, the Sukaja— Ngurah Anom (Sukarno) package supported by Golkar Party was conducting a war via mass action and a claim to the Judicial Court because the victory was considered flawed. Such secret meeting was carried out in the official residential house of Tabanan Regent, last Sunday (May 16). Based on information compiled, the officials of Golkar consisted of one of the regional chairman of Golkar of Bali Chapter (DPD I), one of the chairman of Tabanan Chapter (DPD II), and four administrators of subdistrict. The meeting took place at the official residential house of Tabanan Regent at around 11:30 am last Sunday (May 16). Of course, such external meeting of the party made a number of administrators to feel suspicious. Moreover, earlier, in the last regional election a number of party administrators were alleged to desert because the votes acquisition of regent candidate supported by Golkar even dropped at a number of Golkar’s basis. Junior High School National Examination

143 Students Retakes Indonesian Language Question Paper Denpasar ( Bali Post)-

It was noted in Denpasar city there were 143 candidates from 224 people that registered joining the Indonesian Language National Exam on the first day, last Monday (17/5). They have to retake it because they did not get a minimum grade from the first exam. This first day went well and there were no answer papers that were counted less or damaged. From those 143 people, one of them had to do it at Puri Raharja Hospital as this student had dengue/scarlet fever. Meanwhile the second day, Tuesday (18/5), was English Language exam and joined by 53 people. And then there’ll be 20 people joining the Mathematics exam on the third day and 57 people will join the Science exam on the last day. This National Examination was monitored by Head of Education, Youth and Sports Agency Bali, Wayan

Suasta, S.H., joined by Head of Compulsory Basic Education Denpasar City, I.B. Alit, S.Pd. Suasta managed to monitor the examination at Subrayon 6 (National Junior High School (SMPN) No.6 Denpasar) which had the most candidates with 45 people. This examination took place in 3 class rooms. It was guarded by team of monitors from Udayana University and their teachers. Suasta said, this examination will be equalised to the first one. Candidates

were in total guard. The question papers are different to the first exams. The papers were sent by the Education Centre in Jakarta and were received Thursday (13/5) in perfect condition. This examination went well and they are hoping that all candidates will pass and still maintaining quality. “So it’s not just passing,” Suasta said. If they pass, the result will be inserted in the National Examination Grade with a star which means that the result was gained by retakes. (08)

16 Owners of Violating Buildings Got 2nd Caution Letters Denpasar ( Bali Post)-

Many cases of violation done by building owners are overwhelming Spatial Planning and Housing Services Denpasar. From the monitoring results, the violation reached 92 cases last April 2010. These included 16 building owners being given 2nd Caution Letters. Similar to the previous month, it was dominated by Building Permits violations (at March there were 88 buildings). This was clarified by the Head of the Spatial Planning and Housing Services, A.A. Bagus Airawata, at his office last Monday (17/5). This was a follow up from last month’s. “So it did not mean that we stopped taking care of previous cases. There were

some that’s ongoing and some are newly founded this month,” Airawata explained. It was mentioned, 92 buildings that violated the regulations happened at 4 sub districts of Denpasar which included 24 buildings without Building Permits and one violating demarcation line construction at West Denpasar . The demarcation line construction should have been 10,5 meters but the house-shop building owned by a supplier only distanced 7,5 meter. Meanwhile at South Denpasar, the officials found 20 buildings violating building permits and two violating demarcation line construction. At East Denpasar, as much as 25 buildings violating building permits

also for 20 buildings at North Denpasar . From that total, 1st stage of caution went to 76 buildings and 2nd stage of caution to 16 buildings. The new building at Pulau Kawe street planned for a mini market is one of them. On the other hand, Commission B Member of Regional Parliamentary Denpasar, Wayan Mariyana Wandira, asked executives to let other controllers such as Head of villages and sub district to join. This is because they’re the ones that know the condition of the areas. “So if there is a new building in their area and violated the regulations, they can straight ahead report it to the related agency,” Wandira explained. The mechanism process in recruiting candidates for provincial secretary of Bali is still being lead by Provincial Parliamentary Bali as this is a strategic job position in being the bureaucratic pulse to the Bali Provincial Government. The process started with the names being given by the Governor to the Provincial Parliamentary. This was told by Group of Functionaries (Golkar) Party Fraction member Nyoman Sugawa Korry and previous Head of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Fraction Made Sudana last Monday (17/5) at Renon. This came up in the middle of the discussion of Drs. Nyoman Yasa,

M,Si., the recent Bali Province Secretary, retiring. Sugawa admitted the names are dominated picked by the Position and Rank Considerations Agency. They are the ones that chose the names to be suggested to the Governor which then to the Parliamentary. Because of that Sugawa’s fraction won’t suggest a name or supporting any of them. But the function of the Parliamentary still can be used in controlling, whether or not the recruiting mechanism suited the regulations. “If it does not suit the mechanism then we will criticise because the output will be given to the Parliamentary,” Sugawa said.

Head of Democratic (Demokrat) Party Fraction Provincial Parliamentary Bali, Nengah Tamba S.H., also had the same opinion in not suggesting names to the executives. “We are appreciating the executives’ choices as long as the recruitment fulfilled the job position’s criteria, experiences and also professionalism,” Tamba explained. Meanwhile Sudana thinks that the importance of the new secretary chosen will be as the bureaucratic pulse. Black and blue beaten by masses as stealing hand phone Gianyar (Bali Post)—

IB Adi Saputra, 22, a young man from Tusan Hamlet, Tusan Village, Klungkung, last Monday (May 17), was virtually black and blue due to beaten by residents around Jalan Ngurah Rai, Gianyar. The man with innocent face was beaten for stealing a handphone (HP) from the Firdus counter. The action of perpetrator was considered reckless. Considering that theft was committed during peak hours. Fortunately, police officers knew about it and separated. Now, the theft perpetrator is still languishing in the cell and undergoing intensive examination in the room of investigators of Gianyar Police. Chief of Mobile Detective of Gianyar Police Nengah Semadi with permission of Spokesperson of Gianyar Police said the perpetrator stole a hand phone from the counter because he wished to have a new hand phone with a good camera. Initially, perpetrator was going to sell his own hand phone to the counter and bought another one as other brands owned by the people at this time. Since the price of his hand phone was not enough to buy a new hand phone, the new one wrapped in the box was taken right away. “When he was escaping, employee of the counter called out for help. Instantly, many people at the surrounding area pursued and bit him until blue and black,” he explained. The day before taking his deeds, the perpetrator had time to come to that hand phone counter. His arrival by public transportation was only intended to have a look at the hand phones. On the next morning, de-

parting from his house at around 7:00 am Local Time accompanied by his brother, the perpetrator went to Gianyar and disembarked in front of Gianyar market. From that point, he walked to the counter which was visited on the day before. When he would like to sell his hand phone, the counter staff said that the condition of his hand phone camera was broken. As consequence, it was bargained at cheap price. Perpetrator who only brought money worth IDR 6,000 began issuing a bad trick by asking the new hand phone he wanted. Once rendered by counter staff, the item was immediately taken by the perpetrator and escaped. Shortly, he was arrested and beaten abuzz. Meanwhile, at around 11:30 am Local Time a student named Ni Putu AP, 19, was caught red-handedly shoplifting on the third floor of Hardy’s Supermarket, Gianyar. The incident was revealed based on suspicion of a shop assistant, Desak Putu Ari Parmini, 27, a resident from Tegal Tugu Village, Gianyar Subdistrict who suspected the existence of customer putting the goods into her bag at the store area. Perpetrator was previously suggested to put the bag in deposit counter, but the concerned rejected. Then the bag was deposited at the cashier and when checked, in fact it contained a pair of shorts worth IDR 41,500 and white T-shirt worth IDR 38,500. Burglarized by thief, a villa suffers a loss worth IDR 300 million Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Perpetrators of theft targeting residential house or villa inhabited by foreigners, apparently still haunt the city of Denpasar. This was evidenced by the statement of Robert Brett Evans, 50, an Australian citizen, last Sunday (May 16). Victim admitted that his villa located on Jalan Uluwatu, Jimbaran, was known to have been observed by a thief, last Friday (May 14). As a result, a number of valuables worth hundreds of millions of rupiahs had been taken away. Allegedly, the thief entered into the Villa Lalang Temu easily because the door was not locked. This case was reported by I Nyoman Darma, 37, said one of the police officers in South Kuta Police. Victim just knew the incident at 7:00 pm Local Time. Victim got extremely shocked after seeing his room was messy. Once examined more deeply, a number of his possessions had disappeared from its place. Among others, there were cash worth IDR 10 million, silver necklace, gold necklace, silver pendant and diamond pendant.

Not only that, the victim also admitted to have lost three gold earrings, a ventora bracelet, silver bracelets, silver rings, gold rings and silver stud. As reported, the total losses reached IDR 300 million. “This case was still under investigation of police,” he said while asking to keep secret his identity. Meanwhile, the cases of theft also occurred at particular location of Jalan Kapten Agung, Kayumas, Denpasar, last Saturday (May 15) at 8:30 pm. I Kadek Wiranata, 17, I Wayan Satria Jaya, 17 and Kadek Ari Sukmantara, 16, claimed that the hand phone and key of his motorcycle were taken away by a man named Doble. The incident began when the victim was shopping at the scene. Not long after, the offender was driving a Yamaha Jupiter MX with license plate DK 3774 QD coming over to the victim. Without hesitancy, the perpetrator brought along with him a handphone and key of motorcycle belonged to victim. At least 12 killed in Afghan suicide bombing AP

KABUL, Afghanistan – A suicide car bomb blast ripped through a NATO convoy and public bus in the heavily fortified Afghan capital early Tuesday, killing at least 12 people including five foreigners, officials said. A NATO spokesman said there were casualties among NATO forces but declined to give specifics about dead or injuried. Lt. Commander Iain Baxter with the British Royal Navy said the alliance could not confirm if the convoy was the target of the attack or was caught up in a blast aimed at something else. The area around the blast site also is home to Afghan government buildings, including the Ministry of Energy and Water. At least 47 people were wounded in the attack, the Interior Ministry said. No group immediately claimed responsibility. It was the first major attack in Kabul since February when suicide bombers struck two small hotels in the city center. That attack killed 16 people and led Afghan police to pledge that they would tighten security and surveillance. Police have publicized a number of arrests of would-be bombers since then, but Tuesday’s bombing was a reminder that the city’s defenses can still be penetrated by determined attackers. Initial reports of the explosion in western Kabul indicated that U.S. vehicles were targeted, said

The SUVs were painted beige and grey but no markings identifying them as American were immediately discernable. At least one of the vehicles had a large antenna mounted on it of the type commonly used by foreign governments or international contractors in Afghanistan. BANGKOK – Hopes rose Tuesday for an end to deadly mayhem in Thailand’s capital as leaders of the protest movement occupying central Bangkok said they would unconditionally accept an offer by the country’s Senate to mediate talks. The country’s prime minister was scheduled to announce later Tuesday the government’s response to the latest offer aimed at ending the two-month-long political crisis, which has destabilized a country once regarded as one of Southeast Asia’s most stable democracies. ISLAMABAD (AFP) – Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday pardoned a key cabinet minister sentenced over corruption to block his possible arrest, threatening to plunge his rule into fresh controversy. Interior Minister Rehman Malik, one of the closest allies of Pakistan’s unpopular head of state and a key member of his ruling party, was sentenced in absentia to three years in jail by an anti-corruption court in January 2004. Malik, who was abroad at the time of the conviction, appealed against the verdict but a court in the eastern city of Lahore on Monday

rejected his plea and cancelled his bail. The president quickly intervened and within hours invoked his power to protect Malik from a possible detention. The president used his “discretionary powers” to pardon Malik, Zardari’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said early Tuesday. Referring to the hasty decision, Babar said the pardon was granted under article 45 of the constitution on the advice of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who formally took over constitutional powers from Zardari last month. “Mr Rehman Malik has all along maintained that he has been victimised due to political reasons in his absence from the country,” Babar

said. Under pressure to hold elections and end eight years of military rule, military ruler Pervez Musharraf passed a so-called National Reconciliation Ordinance in 2007, allowing political opponents to return home. Zardari’s main ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won elections held in 2008 after his wife, former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated, returning Pakistan to civilian rule. The controversial 2007 amnesty continued to protect Zardari and other politicians from possible court proceedings, until the supreme court, which has repeatedly clashed with the government, last December scrapped the ordinance.

The supreme court has ordered hundreds of cases to be reopened and demands the return of millions of dollars plundered by leaders and bureaucrats. Pakistan is ranked the world’s 40th most corrupt country by global watchdog Transparency International and many governments have fallen as a result of military intervention over accusations of graft. “Zardari’s move to protect Malik will raise new controversy,” retired supreme court judge Tariq Mahmood told AFP. “The president enjoys the authority to grant clemency but the question is can he pardon a crime and whether Malik can retain his seat in parliament.”

SYDNEY (AFP) – An Australian adventurer will set out to solve Mount Everest’s greatest mystery this week by searching for long-lost evidence that the peak was conquered in 1924, 29 years earlier than previously thought. Mountaineer Duncan Chessell said conditions were the best in decades to find the missing body of Andrew “Sandy” Irvine and perhaps photographic evidence that he reached the world’s highest peak with fellow Briton George Mallory. Mallory and Irvine perished near the summit during their expedition, leaving many wondering whether they had successfully scaled Everest. Mallory’s body was recovered in 1999 but not the camera equipment he was believed to be carrying. “I was at North Col last week and

the wind was 150 kilometres (90 miles) per hour and it was stripping snow off the mountain which has been there for many years,” Chessell said in a message from base camp, according to AAP news agency. “There is now bare rock exposed which has been deeply covered for decades in the most likely areas where Andrew Irvine’s body may be. “It is my intention to search those areas en route to the summit and take this rare opportunity to find him and, perhaps, the missing cameras.” New Zealand’s Edmund Hillary and

MANILA, Philippines – Communist guerrillas have freed a Philippine town mayor and his four bodyguards after 12 days of jungle captivity in which the rebels interrogated him and he lived in constant fear of gunfire — and snakes, he said Tuesday. Mayor Roberto Luna and his security guards — two army soldiers and two policemen — were turned over by about 30 heavily armed New People’s Army guerrillas to local officials late Monday in a mountain jungle in southern Davao Oriental province during a downpour, Luna said. The rebels freed Luna, who has diabetes, on humanitarian grounds and after negotiating with Gov. Johnny Pimentel of the southern province of Surigao del Sur, where Luna is mayor of Lingig town, Pimentel said. Luna wept with joy after he was freed and said the rebels treated their prisoners “like VIPs,” although he constantly feared being bitten by snakes or being hit by gunfire while in rebel

custody. “We had to deal with heavy rains, fog, mud and nights that were supercold,” Luna told The Associated Press by telephone. “But the thing I feared most at night were snakes, so I wrapped my head in cloth and wore socks on a hammock.” “I also told them I dread the sound of gunfire,” Luna said. The rebels, who have been waging a rural-based Marxist rebellion since the 1960s, abducted Luna on May 5 in Compostela Valley province. The rebels interrogated him, accusing him of involvement in the killings of three men as well as land grabbing and corruption. He said he argued his innocence to three rebels who interrogated him. Luna will continue to be investigated by the guerrillas for the alleged crimes and could again face rebel attack if he “commits fascist acts and crimes against the people, the revolutionary movement,” regional rebel spokesman Roel Agustin II said in a statement.

While in rebel custody, the mayor acknowledged that he has a huge private army, which was linked to human rights abuses, and apologized for it, Agustin said. Pimentel said the mayor did not have such an army but made the admission, thinking that it would help win his freedom. The captives were fed corned beef and a local rice-chocolate drink. When they found out he has diabetes, the rebels managed to get medicines for him, Luna said. The captives were not bound, but the rebels warned they would be shot if they tried to escape. Outgoing President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has ordered the military to end the communist insurgency, one of Asia’s longest, by the end of her term next month, but the rebels have dismissed the deadline as propaganda. Peace talks between the rebels and the government brokered by Norway collapsed in 2004 after the rebels accused Arroyo’s administration of instigating their inclusion on U.S. and European terrorist blacklists.

HOUSTON/COCODRIE, Louisiana (Reuters) – The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will be in the political spotlight in Washington Tuesday as energy giant BP scrambled to contain crude spewing from its ruptured deep-water well. President Barack Obama will create a presidential commission to probe the disaster as the oil industry and its practices come under sharp scrutiny in the face of a looming economic and ecological calamity in the Gulf. “Whether it’s a nuclear meltdown at Three Mile Island or an oil blowout one mile deep, appointing an independent review panel is critical to reduce the risks of future accidents,” said Edward Markey, chairman of a House of Representatives committee on global warming and energy independence. The presidential commission will investigate issues related to the spill and its aftermath, including rig safety and regulatory regimes at the local, state and federal levels. The federal government’s oversight role, environmental protections, and the “structure and functions” of the Minerals Management Service, the Interior Department agency that has been heavily criticized for regulatory lapses, also will be on the panel’s agenda. With a shakeup of the agency imminent, Chris Oynes, the top official overseeing its offshore oil and gas drilling, announced he would retire at the end of the month. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is due to face questions from the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on Tuesday about the agency’s failings on issues surrounding the oil spill and how the Interior Department will be reformed. London-based BP said its latest “quick fix” — a mile-long siphon tube deployed by undersea robots down to the leaking well— was capturing about a fifth of the oil leaking from the ruptured well. Officials cautioned that the tube is helping contain the oil but will not stop the flow. “I do feel that we have, for the first time, turned the corner in this challenge,” BP Chief Executive Tony Hayward said in Florida. BP’s stock rose more than 2 percent in London on the news but later shed its gains. Investors have knocked $30 billion off BP’s value over the spill, which followed the April 20 rig explosion that killed 11 workers and the fallout it faces is ramping up. The disaster has hurt BP’s image, already tarnished in the United States from a 2006 spill in Alaska from a BP-owned pipeline and 2005 fire at the company’s Texas City refinery that killed 15 workers and injured 180. Battling to salvage its reputation, BP said Monday it was providing grants to Gulf coast states to help them promote tourism. Tourism and fishing are two of the economic mainstays in a region known for its beaches, wildlife and mild climate. While the U.S. Gulf Coast has so far been spared a massive landfall of heavy oil, small amounts in the form of surface sheen and tar balls, have come ashore in outlying parts of the coastline of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. “People are freaking out. Police question Susno as witness in two cases Antara

DEPOK - Police questioned former chief criminal investigator Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji as a witness in the Gayus Tambunan and arowana fish farm cases at the police’s Mobile Brigade (Brimob) detention center here on Monday. “The investigation ran smoothly. It focused on the two cases,” Zul Armain Azis, Susno’s lawyer, said. Azis said the investigation took place as originally planned and his client was interrogated as a witness. “My client is not involved in the two cases,” he said. He said his client’s testimonies were very important to uncover the

involvement of other parties in the cases. The investigation was different from the dossiers in which Susno was named a suspect, he said. He said the exact reasons for Susno’s detention were still unclear. “I do not know yet the reasons why the police have detained Susno.” The arowana farm case occurred

when Susno was chief of the National Police Headquarters’ Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) in 2008. The case involved Indonesian and Singaporean businessmen in Pekanbaru, Riau province. The case emerged after the two businessmen filed a default suit against each other with the police.

Bareskrim at the time suspected a sum of money had been embezzled in the case. However, a Singapore court ruled that the case was a civil one. Therefore, it was believed there had been a flow of funds to police officers at the time. Police investigators asked for information from Susno believed to have knowledge of the flow of funds. Susno was also known as a whistle blower on case brokering and engineering practices within the police force in connection with the money laundering and corruption charges against tax official Gayus

Tambunan. Meanwhile, I Wayan Sudirta, chief of the House of Representatives’ Anti-Corruption Caucus, expressed regret over the way in which police officers guarded Susno at the detention center. He said the police officers had earlier denied him entry into the detention center but later allowed him to meet Susno. He said he wrote to Bareskrim on May 15 asking for permission to meet Susno. “We only want to ask information from Coms Gen Susno Duadji.”

JAKARTA - China is looking into the possibility of cooperation with Indonesia to build joint maritime museums in the two countries, an Indonesian minister said. “He (Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Zhang Qiyue) was very enthusiastic to maintain the artifacts (from Cirebon). He expressed gratitude to us for postponing the second phase of auction of the artifacts,” Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad said after receiving the Chinese ambassador at his office here on Monday. He said investors’ right to proceeds from the auction of the artifacts must be solved as fairly as possible. The government would compensate the investors according to the value of the artifacts put to the auction. “I have asked the director general of history and archeology at the Culture and Tourism Ministry to conduct an initial study on the possibility of building the two maritime museums. JAKARTA - The governments of Indonesia and Germany have made a commitment to optimize the two countries’ potentials in trade and investment to achieve a pre-crisis or higher volume of trade. The agreement was reached following a consultative meeting between officials of the two countries at Hotel Borobudur here on Monday, according to the Indonesian foreign ministry. The two countries’ governments agreed to identify steps needed to meet the target including increasing promotion and facilitation to attract and support more investments from Germany in the country. The two countries also agreed to increase coordination in the implementation of bilateral cooperation program to improve the country’s competitive power in the international market to boost exports as well as number of German investors in the country. The two countries’ delegations in the meeting had asked officials concerned to formulate strategic measures to revive the German-Indonesian Forum (GIF) for supporting the two countries’ efforts in developing Indonesia-Germany economic cooperation. Germany remains one of Indonesia’s main trade partners and investors although trade between the two countries in 2009 dropped by 15 percent (to US$4.7 billion from US$5.53 billion in 2008) due to global economic crisis. Investment from Germany which is the second biggest investor from Europe in Indonesia also dropped in 2009 covering only 18 projects worth US$103.9 million from 22 projects worth US$198.2 million in 2008. At the meeting the two countries’ delegations also recorded that the debt swap scheme agreement between the two countries since 2005 had not only helped in settling repayment of the Indonesian debt to Germany but also in promoting elementary and middle-level education programs in the country as well as child and maternity health programs and environment protection programs. The two countries’ delegations have asked for offices concerned to finish the preparations for the next debt swap program to support the Indonesian national programs in the forestry field to overcome climate change problems so that all debts in the scheme could be fully repaid. The meeting in general discussed strategic steps to promote the two countries’ bilateral relations to follow up the results of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s visit to Berlin in December 2009 besides regional and global issues of common interest. The next consultative meeting would be held in Germany in 2012. At the meeting on Monday the Indonesian delegation was led by Retno L. P. Marsudi, the foreign ministry’s director general for America and Europe while the German delegation was led by Cyrill Jean Nunn, the director general of Asia and Pacific affairs of the German foreign ministry.

sity. Welsa gave the lecture in one hour and using Polish language. Even tough the lecture was only in short period of time but he can give great description about the future. Walesa said “currently, the young generations can learn in a peaceful condition and it is great for them.” He also hope that the young generation can answer the challenges in the future.

The pawiwahan (marriage, weddings of a Hindu couple) is a very important part of Balinese social life. The ritual generally takes place in the home of the groom, a further confirmation of the typical patriarchal inclinations of Balinese culture, and is per- formed by a priest. The newlyweds to be dressed in very colorful and refined garments, worn only for the day of the wed- ding, will withdraw in prayer in the family temple. This is followed by the presentation of offerings in the pelinggih and by a series of ritual gestures. A very typical moment in the ceremony occurs when the bride offers the groom several different beverages: a conventional way to reiterate that the woman. as a wife, commits herself to obeying her husband and to lovingly care for him for the rest of their lives. Many Balinese marriages are still prearranged or negotiated, though young men may also “kidnap” their wives, and mixed-caste marriages are increasingly common. Marriage customs differ from caste to caste and village to village, but all Balinese marriage practices share fundamental similarities. There are basically two ways to get married on Bali, ‘ngerorod’ and ‘mapadik’. Ngerorod This is marriage by elopement, in which the prearranged honeymoon precedes the wedding ceremony. Since it’s otherwise quite expensive to marry on Bali, ‘ngerorod’ is becoming more and more popular. It has particular appeal to the Balinese sense of theater. Balinese love a spectacular kidnapping in which friends of the suitor capture a woman in the fields, on the road, or down by the river. Theatrics are paramount: she is expected to bite and kick her abductors in mock self-defense. These days it’s more stylish and fashionable for the woman to be whisked away in a hired sedan, and more often than not she goes willingly. The couple then repairs to a friend’s house stocked with provisions, offerings, and the bride’s wardrobe. The woman’s infuriated father sounds the alarm demanding to know what has become of his daughter. A search party is organized which eventually returns unsuccessful and exhausted. Meanwhile, the couple is consummating the marriage before special offerings (sesayut tabuh rah) have the time to wilt. These offerings alone make the marriage binding by customary law. Emissaries of the groom visit the bride’s father to argue the advantages of the union. Begrudgingly, the girl’s father gives in, after a suitable bride price has been agreed upon. The groom’s father must finance and conduct the marriage ceremony,

welcoming the bride as a new daughter into the family. The actual public wedding, within 42 days of the staged kidnapping, is only an official confirmation of their union. They are already married in the eyes of the gods. Mepadik This is marriage by consent, in which an upper-class couple conducts a formal courtship. Since daughters were once regarded as property useful for attaining a family’s social and political goals, high-caste families tried to wed a son to the daughter of a friend or relative so a blood bond would unite the resources of both families. Under no circumstances may a woman “marry down,” i.e., take a commoner. The preferred marriage is through a parallel patri-cousin, the father’s brother’s daughter. It has been noted that Triwangsa couples often get along so well because they are all first cousins. Traditionally, the man or his father journeys three times to the bride’s house with food and ‘sirih’. When the bride’s family visits, the groom’s father is obliged to give them food, ‘sirih’ is chewed (an ancient, ritualistic means of coming to agreement), and presents are exchanged. The groom then regularly visits the home of his prospective bride, presenting gifts and performing services for his future father-in-law. The groom’s family arranges and pays for the wedding; the date set well in advance on a propitious day. Wedding guests are often entertained by professional storytellers and musicians. Enormously detailed rules govern dining and seating arrangements. Sometimes the bride’s family is not even invited. The actual ceremony varies. It could be very simple and short, presided over by a common temple ‘pemangku’, or it may be elaborate, expensive, and go on all day. Both the bride and groom dress in bright ‘songket’, with brocades of gold thread, and the woman’s hair is decorated with glittering gold flowers. Usually the bride and groom offer food to one another, then simulate such domestic duties such as washing, cooking rice, and cutting bamboo. Prayers are intoned, and then the couple eats together in public, feeding each other. This is an important symbolic act, as in former times only married men and women were allowed to eat food together in public. The priest then performs a ritual purification and blesses the couple. Neither rice nor flowers are thrown. Today there could very well be a Western-style buffet reception held afterward where speeches are offered by members of the two families. (BTN/Doc)

It would be more convenient if it is enjoyed while having dinner of Balinese cuisine. At the same time, you watch the beauty of culture and taste the delicacy of local culinary. You may hear the language spoken by players or puppeteer was not understandable. Of course, it is Balinese language. As Japanese and Chinese, Balinese language also has its own characters. They consist of some 18 main characters and 10 vowel sounds. Ordinarily, Balinese characters are used to write palm-leaf manuscript or lontar. Such characters are incised with sharp knife or stylus. When the writing works have completed, they should be rubbed with a blend of oil and lamp shoot to blacken them. So they are visible easily. Since the works were performed manually, the copying of a manuscript took a long time. At a glance, Balinese characters look like Old Javanese, Tamil (India). It is inseparable from historical aspect where they had similarity of genealogical lines. Today, Balinese characters still have restricted use, namely at school for local subject from elementary school to senior high school. It is

becoming the responsibility of local government to preserve and develop Balinese language in order it could survive in the midst of the growth of other languages like Bahasa Indonesia and foreign languages. Balinese language poses a medium and spirit of Balinese culture. To preserve Balinese culture should also simultaneously maintain and use of Balinese language in daily life. In other words, speaking Balinese language also characterizes one of the identities as a Balinese. Among the use of other languages, Balinese language should remain to give a space to grow and develop. Other than speaking and teaching it at schools, it should also accommodate the need of modern community or use in wider functions of language. Balinese community receives abundant heritages of lontar or palm-leaf manuscripts from the predecessors retained by individuals and museums. They carry many aspects of knowledge, ranging from philosophy, local healing, literature, architecture, agriculture, herbal practice, astrology and so forth. Therefore, if they could be interpreted and presented in popular language, they could become attractive information for young generation and saleable books

for commercial needs. Today, there is also a trend of poising the tradition with modern science namely by re-interpreting the indigenous wisdoms that are relevant to the current time. People will get balanced inputs from the past and current orientation. Of course, such treasures will be beneficial for the conservation and future development of Balinese culture because it stays in touch with its original roots. Young generation should be introduced to these roots at early stage. Later, they will not lose their identity and even could feel proud of it. Moreover, it could give them inspiration in making their creativities, either in fine arts, performance, traditional architecture or herbal healings. Thanks to modern technology, the writing of Balinese characters now can be made easy by Bali Simbar font. It is the innovative thinking of I Made Suatjana (1986) lies behind the composing of this font. His work has helped the writing of Balinese characters in word processing application like Microsoft Word. Hopefully, there would be more creative software helping the development and learning of Balinese language so it would not come into extinction or be far left behind with the modern life. Udang Pantung Kuning (Lobster in Yellow Sauce) OVERVIEW: A real gourmet treat from Bali, this could also be made with huge prawns. In Bali, coconut chunks are roasted directly on charcoal, then the charred skin scrapped off and the flesh grated for making the coconut milk. INGREDIENTS: 4 sml lobsters, weighing about 500 gr each or 1 kg large prawns 5 cups water 2 lemongrass, bruised 2 fragrant lime leaves 4 cups coconut milk few drops white vinegar fried shallots to garnish SPICE PASTE: 5 red chilies, seeded and chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 7 shallots, peeled and chopped 5 cm fresh turmeric, peeled and chopped 5 cm ginger, peeled and chopped 4 candlenuts 1 ½ tsp coriander ½ tsp dried shrimp paste toasted 1 sml tomato, peeled and seeded 2 tbsp oil 1 ½ tbsp tamarind pulp 1 salam leaf 1 lemon grass, bruised PREPARATION: Prepare spice paste by grinding or blending all ingredients except oil, tamarind, salam leaf and lemongrass. Heat oil, add spice paste and all other ingredients. Cook over moderate heat for about 5 minutes, then cool. Wash lobsters and leave whole. Bring water to the boil, add lobsters and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove lobsters, plunge in iced water for 1 minutes, then drain and remove meat. Return shells to the pot of water, keeping lobster meat aside. Add spice paste, lemongrass, lime leaves and vinegar to the water with the shells and simmer until 4 cups of stock remain. Add coconut milk and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain stock and return to pan. Add lobster and simmer for 1 minute. Serve garnished with fried shallots and accompanied by white rice.

BRUSSELS - Eurozone finance ministers vowed Tuesday to fix the region’s finances after expressing concern at the plunging euro, but announced more talks to finalise the massive rescue fund for debt-hit members.

DUBAI - Growth in the oilrich Gulf Cooperation Council states is expected to rise to 4.4 percent in 2010 and 4.7 percent in 2011, the Institute of International Finance (IFF) said in a report on Monday. “The GCC is emerging from the global recession and is recovering at a solid pace,” after a near-zero growth in 2009, said the semi-annual IIF report, which was released in Dubai. The Washington-based institute attributed the projected recovery to “firmer oil prices since mid-2009 and a mild recovery in external demand,” which it said have boosted production and exports. According to the report, gasrich Qatar will lead in terms of overall growth, forecast at 13.9 percent in 2010 and 10.2 percent in 2011. Qatar ’s hydrocarbon real growth could reach 22 percent because of increased gas production, the report said. The once-booming United Arab Emirates is forecast to lag behind its Gulf neighbours at two percent growth in 2010 and 3.1 percent the following year in what the report described as a “sluggish recovery.” However, the report said that the UAE’s “growth could reach 2.7 percent in 2010 and 4.2 percent in 2011” if debt-laden Dubai successfully resolves its debt issues and accelerates reforms. After contracting by 3.5 percent in 2009, Dubai’s economy could contract by 0.7 percent in 2010, the report said. “Dubai’s debt crisis has punctured market confidence,” George Abed, senior counsellor and director of the IIF’s Middle East and North Africa department, told reporters. “The need for greater transparency... has become urgent,” he said, adding that greater support from neighbouring oil-rich Abu Dhabi is needed to resolve Dubai’s debt crisis. “Depending on how the debt is managed in Dubai, foreigners will decide whether or not they will invest in the United Arab Emirates,” Abed said. The chairman of the 16-strong eurozone group meanwhile backed controversial plans for Brussels to vet budgets in all 27 European Union countries before they are put to national parliaments. Luxembourg Prime Minister JeanClaude Juncker insisted however: “The commission is not going to become the school headmistress for member states’ budgetary policies.” Juncker was speaking eight days after the European Union and the International Monetary Fund announced a 750-billion-euro (close to a trillion dollars) rescue plan for heavily indebted members. Despite the plan, and last week’s announcement by Portugal and Spain of their plans to accelerate cuts in public spending in a bid to restore market confidence, the European currency has suffered in recent trading. On Monday, it hit its lowest level since April 2006 in Tokyo trading, before making a partial recovery. In early trading Tuesday in Tokyo, it remained under pressure buying 1.2335 dollars, up from its low of 1.2234. Eurozone ministers had welcomed the proposals set out by Spain and Portugal, said Juncker, after the seven hours of talks in Brussels. “The euro is a credible currency,” he said. But he conceded: “I am not

worried by the current exchange but by the speed at which the exchange rate deteriorated.” Juncker also announced that the massive rescue package for the eurozone needed further talks, scheduled for Friday, to settle “technical details”, while adding: “Nothing dramatic is under way.” Some countries wanted to be able to go back to their national parliaments to seek approval any time a eurozone country called for funding from the rescue package, he acknowledged. Finland was one such country, said a diplomatic source, but Germany had also insisted on the need for parliamentary approval during talks with French officials. The “need to exchange points of view” in elected chambers was “all the more surprising because on May 9 it was said that there was complete agreement on the rescue plan,” he told journalists, betraying a degree of frustration. French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said: “In the great majority of member states, with the exception of one or two smaller ones... it is not a question of going back to parliament once the mechanism is activated.” But diplomatic sources said Germany and the Netherlands had successfully pushed for a unanimous vote among eurozone countries any time a

country called upon the fund’s resources. Juncker defended the plan for EU scrutiny of member states’ budgets, an idea that has already received a hostile reception from some countries, including Sweden. The idea, tabled last week, was “heading in the right direction”, he said. “It’s not a question of cutting across the budgetary powers” of nationally elected politicians, he said. But the proposal is likely to meet resistance from Britain’s new Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron. One of the Conservatives’ conditions in the power-sharing agreement struck with the pro-Europe Liberal Democrat party was that any further transfer of powers from Britain to Europe had to be approved by a referendum. Cameron’s finance minister, George Osborne, will come face-to-face with his EU counterparts for the first time in Brussels later on Tuesday morning. At that meeting, plans to toughen regulation of London’s powerful hedge fund industry are already set to be pushed through despite British opposition. Also on Tuesday, 14.5 billion euros of EU loans agreed for Greece will be paid, meeting an Athens deadline for the most urgent tranche of its 300billion-euro debt.

U.S. consumer-debt delinquency rates fall Reuters

NEW YORK - Fewer U.S. consumers are falling behind on their debt, prompting lenders to look again for ways to make their business grow. Delinquency rates on mortgages, home equity loans and credit card bills fell in April for the third straight month, according to data that Equifax Inc (EFX.N), one of the largest U.S. credit bureaus, provided exclusively to Reuters. The data is based on Equifax’ 200 million-plus files of U.S. consumers using credit. “If you think about the entire U.S. population as a risk portfolio, it’s safe to say that the portfolio is indeed improving,” said Dann Adams, president of Equifax’ U.S. Consumer Information Solutions. The only credit product in which delinquency continues to rise is stu-

dent loans, where 11.2 percent are late, up 0.7 percent from March and 3.5 percent from last year. “It’s a tough labor market,” Adams said. “It’s difficult for many to start repaying those loans.” But in general, U.S. consumers are cutting their debt loads, Adams said. Total U.S. consumer debt is down by $626.1 billion, or 5.4 percent, from its October 2008 peak of $11.5 trillion. Debt has not been this low since August 2007. Indeed, in the past year, fully a quarter of the population has not fallen behind on any payments, Adams said. Credit limits on such cards have fallen $947 billion from their peak, and there are 106 million fewer cards. “Consumers continue to manage their spending and their debt very

The IIF projected a three-percent rise in oil output in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the UAE in 2010. The IIF report also projected that growth in GCC’s non-hydrocarbon sector, which employs more than 95 percent or the region’s workers, will be 3.3 percent in 2010, and will reach 4.4 percent in 2011. “The GCC’s real estate markets have come under pressure,” following the global economic crunch, it said. After a peak in mid-2008, average house prices fell by 50 percent in Dubai, 25 percent in Kuwait and 10 percent in Qatar. Russell Crowe angrily stormed out of a British radio interview on Wednesday, after the host told the actor his accent in Robin Hood sounded Irish. The famously short-tempered Oscar-winner was chatting to broadcaster Mark Lawson for BBC Radio 4’s Front Row show, when he was asked if he purposely added hints of the Irish dialect to his portrayal of the English folklore hero. An infuriated Crowe angrily questioned Lawson’s opinion - before swearing at him. Lawson asked the star, “The accent you’ve given him (Robin Hood). There are hints to me of Irish, but what.... were you thinking in those terms?” To which Crowe replied, “You’ve got dead ears mate, you’ve seriously dead ears if you think that’s an Irish accent... B**locks.” And the interview didn’t get any better when the presenter tried to change his line of questioning, with Crowe returning to the issue of the accent. A tireless musician who performed his blend of swing and bebop until the end, Jones came from a family of jazz musicians who included brothers Thad, a trumpeter, composer and arranger, and Elvin, a drummer known for the polyrhythmic beat that propelled John Coltrane’s classic quartet. Saxophonist Joe Lovano, with whom Jones made several CDs when he was an octogenarian, including the Grammy-nominated “Kids: Live at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola” (2007), called Jones “one of the master musicians in the history of jazz.” “He was the consummate accompanist and played with a very free flowing approach ... His sound, his touch, his ideas were all about feeling,” Lovano said. Throughout his career, Jones was respected by his fellow musicians for his elegant touch, melodic sensitivity and stylistic versatility, making hundreds of recordings, including more than 60

He had gigs planned through next year” and was scheduled to play at the Birdland jazz club in New York next week, he added. Oldest Mesoamerican pyramid tomb found in Mexico Associated Press Writer

MEXICO CITY – Archaeologists in southern Mexico announced Monday they have discovered a 2,700-year-old tomb of a dignitary inside a pyramid that may be the oldest such burial documented in Mesoamerica. The tomb held a man aged around 50, who was buried with jade collars, pyrite and obsidian artifacts and ceramic vessels. Archaeologist Emiliano Gallaga said the tomb dates to between 500 and 700 B.C.

Based on the layers in which it was found and the tomb’s unusual wooden construction, “we think this is one of the earliest discoveries of the use of a pyramid as a tomb, not only as a religious site or temple,” Gallaga said. Pre-Hispanic cultures built pyramids mainly as representations of the levels leading from the underworld to the sky; the highest point usually held a temple. The tomb was found at a site built by Zoque Indians in Chiapa de Corzo, in southern Chiapas state. It may be almost 1,000 years older than the better-known pyramid tomb of the Mayan ruler Pakal at the Palenque archaeological site, also in Chiapas. The man — probably a high priest or ruler of Chiapa de Corzo, a prominent settlement at the time — was buried in a stone chamber. Marks in the wall indicate wooden roof supports were used to create the tomb, but the wood long ago collapsed under the weight of the pyramid built above.

Heart group backs video games in obesity campaign Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK – Talk about strange bedfellows. The American Heart Association and Nintendo Co. are teaming up to promote the popular Wii video game console, as the health advocacy group concedes that its campaign for traditional exercise isn’t working. The surprising partnership, announced Monday, comes amid growing concern about obesity among kids who spend much of their time watching television and playing video games. Nintendo will be able to brand its Wii products with the AHA’s iconic heart logo to let consumers know that the organization considers the items a healthy choice. Nintendo will donate $1.5 million to the AHA as part of the partnership.

“We can keep beating the drum on traditional exercise and make small changes to the obesity epidemic, or we can try something that is really provocative and new,” Clyde Yancy, the AHA’s president, said in an interview. Numerous studies show a correlation between obesity and the amount of time children spend with television and video games. Jeffrey Levi, executive director of Trust for America’s Health, said the best solution is simply to cut the cord and encourage youths to spend less time in front of screens. But the AHA said it is endorsing the Wii because it will encourage sedentary Americans to take the first step toward fitness. With 70 percent of Americans doing no regular physical activity at all, the AHA wants to find a way to reach out to people turned off by gyms and traditional sports. The organization said its studies show that 40 percent of those who don’t exercise say that it’s not entertaining enough. The AHA says the Wii addresses the fun factor. The Wii, which has sold more than 30 million consoles across the Americas, comes with a controller that encourages people to physically move as they play. Sports-style games such as baseball and boxing let players move their arms to simulate the pitching of a ball or the throwing of a punch. Nintendo also makes a foot pad accessory, the Wii Fit, that allows players to try dance steps or yoga. The heart icon covers the Wii console itself along with two of its more active games, Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort.

Archeologists began digging into the pyramid mound in April to study the internal structure — pyramids were often built in layers, one atop another — when they happened on a wall whose finished stones appeared to face inward. In digging last week, they uncovered the 4- by 3-meter tomb chamber about 6 or 7 meters beneath what had been the pyramid’s peak. The body of a 1-year-old child was laid carefully over the man’s body inside the tomb, while that of a 20-year-old male was tossed into the chamber with less care, perhaps sacrificed at the time of the burial. The older man was buried with jade and amber collars and bracelets and pearl ornaments. His face was covered with what may have been a funeral mask with obsidian eyes. Nearby, the tomb of a woman, also about 50, contained similar ornaments. The ornaments — some imported from as far away as Guatemala and central

Mexico — and some of the 15 ceramic vessels found in the tomb show influences from the Olmec culture, long considered the “mother culture” of the region. The find raised the possibility that Olmec pyramids might contain similar tombs of dignitaries, especially at well-known sites like La Venta. Olmec pyramids, while wellknown, have not been excavated, in part because the high water table and humidity of their Gulf coast sites are not as conducive to preserving buried human remains. “The Olmec sites have not been explored with the depth they deserve,” said Lynneth Lowe, an archaeologist at Mexico’s National Autonomous University who participated in the dig. “It is possible that thus type of tomb exists at La Venta.” Despite the Chiapa de Corzo tomb’s location, experts said it is not clear the later Maya culture learned or inherited the practice of pyramid burials from the Zoques, or Olmecs. While I have no doubt it relates to Olmec, there is no tie to Maya at this time per se,” said archaeologist Lisa Lucero of the University of Illinois, who was not involved in the Chiapa de Corzo project. “There are scholars who would like to see Olmec-Maya connections so they can show direct ties from Olmec to Maya, but this would be difficult to show with evidence at hand.”

NEW YORK – The world faces the nightmare possibility of fishless oceans by 2050 unless fishing fleets are slashed and stocks allowed to recover, UN experts warned. “If the various estimates we have received... come true, then we are in the situation where 40 years down the line we, effectively, are out of fish,” Pavan Sukhdev, head of the UN Environment Program’s green economy initiative, told journalists in New York. A Green Economy report due later this year by UNEP and outside experts argues this disaster can be avoided if subsidies to fishing fleets are slashed and fish are given protected zones — ultimately resulting in a thriving industry. The report, which was opened to preview Monday, also assesses how surging global demand in other key areas including energy and fresh water can be met while preventing ecological destruction around the planet. UNEP director Achim Steiner said the world was “drawing down to the very capital” on which it relies. However, “our institutions, our governments are perfectly capable of changing course, as we have seen with the extraordinary uptake of interest. Around, I think it is almost 30 countries now have engaged with us directly, and there are many others revising the policies on the green economy,” he said. Environmental experts are mindful of the failure this March to push through a worldwide ban on trade in bluefin tuna, one of the many species said to be headed for extinction. Powerful lobbying from Japan and other tuna-consuming countries defeated the proposal at the CITES conference on endangered spe-

LOS ANGELES – Kobe Bryant dribbled toward the Lakers’ bench, luring Channing Frye and Jason Richardson along with him. Bryant leaned back and launched a feather-soft jumper over Phoenix’s double team, neatly beating the first-quarter buzzer. That’s about when the Suns should have noted the bright yellow brace on Bryant’s right knee is the color of a caution sign. Even with a balky knee and a litany of additional woes, Bryant still is among the most dangerous postseason scorers in NBA history — and he had no problem giving Los Angeles an early leg up in the Western Conference finals. Bryant scored 40 points, Lamar Odom added 19 points and 19 rebounds, and the Lakers opened the series with ruthless offensive efficiency in a 128-107 victory on Monday night. “Just being aggressive, playing my game,” Bryant said. “Got shots, took them. Got lanes to the basket, took them.” Pau Gasol had 21 points for the top-seeded Lakers, who won their seventh straight playoff game and snapped the Suns’ six-game streak with a phenomenal second half, highlighted by Bryant’s 21point third quarter. Del Neri leaves Sampdoria as Juventus beckons Agence France - Presse

ROME – Sampdoria on Monday announced the departure of team coach Luigi Del Neri, raising speculation the Italian will soon take over at fallen Serie A giants Juventus. Genoa-based Sampdoria achieved the significant feat of finishing fourth in Serie A on Sunday, which is synonymous with a coveted place in the Champions League’s third qualifying round. According to local reports the 59-year-old Del Neri will become Juventus’s new coach either on Tuesday or Wednesday. The contract of Juventus’s interim coach Alberto Zaccheroni, who was brought in as caretaker following the sacking of Ciro Ferrara in January, was not extended by the Turin club. Juventus could only finish seventh in the table, thus claiming the third and final spot for next season’s Europa League. Interviewed in Tuttosport, Del Neri is under no illusion as to what is expected of him. “In effect I feel a great enthusiasm. Juve represent a point of departure or even one of arrival. At a club like Juve you

are forced to carry great objectives. I will have to be demanding with the players, the club and myself,” he said. “It’s always the club that makes a Coach great, not the opposite. I have to take in the news. We [at Sampdoria] have been so focused on the Champions League that I have not had time to think about it.” When asked if he is honoured to train Juventus, Del Neri said: “I am sincere. GENEVA – Bayern Munich’s French playmaker Franck Ribery will not play in Saturday’s Champions League final after his appeal against a three match ban was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday. “The CAS Panel has dismissed the appeal and confirmed the three-game suspension imposed by the UEFA Appeals Body on the Bayern Munich player Franck Ribery,” international sport’s top court said. “Accordingly, the player will not be eligible to play in the final of the 2010 Champions League,” it added in a statement. European football’s governing body imposed a three-match suspension on Ribery after he was sent off for a foul in the Champions League semi-final first leg clash with Lyon. Bayern had been trying to overturn or cut the UEFA penalty before Bayern’s Champions League final against Inter Milan on Saturday. Ribery had earlier appeared at the hearing at CAS headquarters in the Swiss city of Lausanne with Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and club lawyers. The German side had lost a first appeal at UEFA last week. Rummenigge has acknowledged a foul but insisted that the ban penalty was too harsh for a hard tackle and should be reduced to one match. UEFA officials felt his tackle on Lyon striker Lisandro Lopez was dangerous and tantamount to an assault. The CAS said it would issue its full reasons in a few days, but the court’s secretary general, Matthieu Reeb, told AFP that arbitrators were reluctant to interfere in referee-

Ferrari says F-duct improvement is key

FERRARI thinks it’s vital to get its F-duct working better at the Turkish Grand Prix if it is going to close down the gap to Red Bull Racing. With Mark Webber’s victory at Monaco on Sunday having helped his team move to the top of both championship tables, Ferrari has vowed to make a big development push to try and get itself on terms with F1’s pace-setters. However, with those upgrades not likely for a few more races, team principal Stefano Domenicali thinks that the key to taking the fight to the RB6 in Turkey will be on improving the F-duct.

Lorenzo says he is not title favourite JORGE Lorenzo says he does not see himself as favourite for the MotoGP title despite having taken the lead after his win at Jerez. The Yamaha rider has enjoyed a very strong start to the season, having finished second in Qatar and first in his home race. He is currently leading the championship from team-mate Valentino Rossi, four points behind the Spaniard. But Lorenzo insists it is still too early to consider himself as a top contender for the title. “Despite our victory in Jerez and taking the lead in the world standings I continue to think that I am not the favourite because the season is very long and it has only just started,” said Lorenzo in a team preview ahead of the French Grand Prix. “I am very proud however because Jerez was my first victory at home in MotoGP. Last year I won in Le Mans in an amazing and crazy race. It was a very complicated because of the rain and drying track, but I think that everybody in our team did an unbelievable job, above all on Sunday. I know that I used everything I had, from the very first laps right to the end. I hope the fans aren’t waiting for a repeat this weekend! “Of course the weather is always a risk in Le Mans, but I hope for sun. I’ve Jorge Lorenzo been on the po-
