Airports in Ireland and the Netherlands were also closed over fears that the drifting ash could damage jet engines and bring down aircraft. The same Icelandic volcano’s ash last month prompted a number of European countries to close their airspaces for nearly a week and travel chaos ensued in Europe and beyond. British Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said aviation officials and

A spokesman for Europe’s busiest airport Heathrow, in west London, said it had reopened at 0600 GMT, although delays and cancellations are expected. British flights face further disruption on Tuesday when British Airways cabin crew are due to strike in a long-running dispute over pay and working practices. Their union and BA managers were holding last-minute talks in London to avert the strike. The runaway adventure of kidnapping and raping perpetrator was over. Police finally managed to catch the perpetrator at particular point of Jalan Pantai Kuta, exactly in front of the Circle-K supermarket, Kuta, last Sunday (May 16). He was Mochammad Davis Suharto alias Diki Saputra, 30, from Lamongan, East Java. The man who was frequently called the scarred man had been detained at Denpasar Metro Police. The emerging cases made the police infuriated. Every day, the police collected information on the field no matter how small it was. And finally, police received information that the perpetrator had been seen riding motorcycle Supra 125 with license plate S 4758 KK at Dalung area. Even, one of the mobile detectives could pursue him, but traces of perpetrator disappeared. Well, the police then intensified its pursuit by spreading the members of mobile in Kuta area. Likewise, Deputy Chief of Kuta Police Boney Wahyu Wicaksono ordered his men to spread out and hunt down the perpetrator. “Members of mobile detective were deployed on last Saturday (May 15). They observed the motorcycle of perpetrator, considering he managed to escape from earlier pursuit in the Kuta area,” he said. The hard work of mobile detective members finally reaped sweet results. Meanwhile, his work in Bali is as reflexologist,” he explained. The arrest of perpetrator of child abduction accompanied with a series of rapes was apparently making the victims’ family curious. They went abuzz to Denpasar Metro Police to see the face of the rapist in person. In fact, when Chief of Bali Police described the chronology of the arrest before the media, the family yelled and asked the perpetrator to be punished severely. Not only the victims’ families, a number of relevant agencies, including the members of Bali Regional Commission of Child Protection (KPAID) were also present in the press conference last Sunday. They provided an appreciation to police performance in revealing the cases disturbing the community. “We are very grateful to the police, especially Denpasar Metro Police. Locked up for three years by employer Victim asks police to process his report Amlapura (Bali Post)—
I Gede Sumerta, 21, a young victim of abuse and captivity done by his employer, last Sunday (May 16) asked the police to process his report in Bali Police Headquarters. Because, he had reported the case nearly 10 days ago, namely last Friday (May 7) to the Bali Police Headquarters. But until now, he considered there had been no follow-up made by the police. Sumerta, a young man from Desa Hamlet, Bungaya Kauh Village, Karangasem said until then he had not been questioned as witnesses of victim by investigators of Bali Police Headquarters. Sumerta reported the deed of his employer, IBGA, 30, a man from Akah, Klungkung having a truck at Kutri, Singapadu, Gianyar. The reason, he was often tortured by being beaten with bare hands, pieces of bamboo, a hammer, struck his head with a piece of iron and the last one his face was beaten with perpetrator’s hands filled with bread necklace (special weapons used by civilian in the form of metal plates inserted into a fist). On his face was left a few scars and wound on his head also left behind a trace. He said to have been beaten in both legs until he could not walk for few days. Although he worked, he had not been given salary for 1.5 years. Victim managed to escape from his employer’s house at Singapadu, last Sunday (May 2) because the rooster of perpetrator IBGA was dead. Previously, the victim claimed to have been frightened by the threat of perpetrator. The victim was assigned to look after some roosters. If the other rooster was dead as had happened before, the victim was threatened where his head would be split or his legs and arms would be broken. When another rooster was dead, the victim turned fear. He eventually attempted to flee to Karangasem. When arrived in Karangasem, he dared not go home to his parents’ house at Bungaya. He even stayed overnight at the terminal of Amlapura because his face was still covered with wounds and bleeding. He feared if his parents knew he was in a battered condition and he did not want his mother’s heart disease to relapse. At the terminal, his wallet containing his motorcycle’s registration document lost. Allegedly, it was stolen by a thief because he had fallen asleep at the terminal. When getting up his wallet was gone. On the following day, after his injury was a bit better he returned to his home. His face was still bruised. His parents questioned and the victim narrated the condition. His family could not accept the treatment just because the victim belonged to indigent society and perpetrator might not treat him arbitrarily. Escorted by her parents, the victim then asked for help and protection to the Center for Integrated Services of Women and Children Empowerment (P2TP2A) of Karangasem. The victim was then accompanied to report to Bali Police Chief because the crime scene of the abuse allegation belonged to cross-regency case. Sumerta admitted to have been persecuted by his employer at Balun, Denpasar in 2007 and at Singapadu in 2009 and 2010. (013)

Bad weather disturb Gilimanuk transport activity Negara (DenPost)—
Inclement weather occurred in Bali Strait made the crossing in Gilimanuk annoyed. Even, the Java-Bali crossing had halted due to strong wind blowing to Ketapang and generated large waves on the dock so the ships could not moor on the pier. Considering the weather condition in Bali Strait, it was very impossible for crossing on last Saturday (May 15) at the schedule of 2:20 pm Local Time. On that account, the Harbor Master and Ketapang Harbor Authority decided to close the crossing. The closure because of large waves in Ketapang Harbor made the ships be unable to anchor for loading and unloading and it was then announced by the official regulator of crossing at the Gilimanuk Harbor. Meanwhile, the stagnant crossing activity in Bali Strait resulted in the accumulation of vehicles that would cross to Java. Passengers of inter-provincial buses, private cars and drivers had no choice but waited in the parking lot while buying food or drinks from the hawkers at the harbor. Half an hour later, the Harbormaster of Ketapang informed if the crossing from Ketapang was
opened at around 4:00 pm. As soon as it was opened, the ships at Gilimanuk that had been loaded directly sailed to Ketapang. Gradually, the line of buses, private vehicles as well as tourism and goods transportation reduced and at around 6:00 pm the line ended. In the meantime, the Harbormaster of Gilimanuk, Dewa Nyoman Kari, when asked for his confirmation last Sunday justified that due to strong winds in Ketapang made the waves on the beach high so that the ships could not moor. Since the Ketapang Harbor was closed, the Gilimanuk Harbor was automatically closed, too. According to Kari, based on weather information delivered by the Meteorology, Geophysics and Climatology Agency (BMG) the wind in Bali Strait blew at 7 to 18 knots and height of the wave was 0.75 to 2 meters or more. Suarni (39) now has to go through the days inside Kuta Police Sector prison. The woman coming from Central Java was caught by Kuta Police Sector’s polices when founded to have pick pocketed Citra Hudayani’s (20) cell phone. This pick pocket action happened when the victim was shopping at Topshop, Sogo Market, Jalan Dewi Sri, Kuta, Badung. Even one was caught, there were still eight more that managed to escape. It’s very strongly suspected that they are purposely in Bali to pick pocket. Because lately it wass known that they were staying in a hotel at Denpasar. “This gang came from Central Java,” Vice Leader of Kuta Police Sector, Iptu Boni, said last Thursday (13/5). According to Iptu Boni, at the crime scene the suspect pretended to nudge the victim until the victim’s bag fell. When it fell, the suspect tried to help. Without the victim’s knowledge, the situation was used by the suspect to take the victim’s BlackBerry phone. “When the cell phone was taken, the victim saw it happened. The suspect then straight
away escapes from the shop,” the previous Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of South Denpasar Police Sector explained. Luckily the shop’s security acted fast so the suspect was managed to be caught without any fight back. Then the suspect was brought to the police station to be legally processed. “At first, the suspect was silent. She did not want to tell the truth. But we kept doing our investigation on her.” Iptu said. The investigators’ hard work then resulted something. The suspect admitted all her actions. One surprising fact that she admitted was she’s not alone. “Suspect said there were 8 others who are doing the same thing and are staying at a hotel in Denpasar,” Iptu explained further. But when it was going to be investigated further, the other 8 had gone from the hotel. According to the reception, they just checked out a couple of minutes before the police arrived. “We think that Suarni did not want to tell the truth because she wants to protect her friends. Corruption Suspected at Bali Tourism Department Investigators More Focused on the Case Denpasar (Bali Post) –
Investigators of State Prosecutors (Kejari) of Denpasar keep going through the suspected corruption in the Bali Regional Tourism Agency which had pointed IG PA as a suspect. After making sure that all inspected witnesses will be called, Kejari of Denpasar will then schedule the case’s exposition. “The witnesses calling will happen. But to sharpen the investigation, we are going to do an exposition as soon as possible,” Special Criminal Section Chief Ridwan Kadir explained last Thursday (13/5). This exposition will involve senior prosecutors. It was said, the prosecutors will use this chance to give suggestions to sharpen the investigation but they are not sure on
when to do it. When asked about the rumors that the IGPA leader is a suspect, Ridwan said anything is possible. But Ridwan’s side did not rush to make it as a new suspect. Everything needs a well-built step, so the step that will be taken won’t be expired. “This witness inspection for the suspect IGPA is almost done. Even if we go back to call the previous witnesses, all of the reporters can see the meaning themselves,” Ridwan said. But the careful actions done by the Kejari inspectors are making the law watchers pessimistic. With all the connected witnesses, the mechanism of liquidizing fees, should have made the investigators to get new suspects besides IGPA, “I am pessimist if there is another suspect besides IGPA,” Ridwan
said. At first, this suspected corruption case suddenly appeared on the surface. IGPA was Executive of Technique for Activities. When doing a tourism promotion to London, IGPA was suspected using double fees which were from the center and the region. The total that was being used was estimated Rp 120 million less than what’s expected first around Rp 3 billion. Before, it was checked by Prof. Pitana when he was the Promotion Director for Abroad Tourism at Tourism and Culture Ministry. Long traffic jam during holiday Singaraja (Bali Post)-
The traffic at mount area of tourism place Bedugul, Tabanan all the way to Wanagiri Suksada Village had gone bad last Thursday (13/5) afternoon. There had been a total traffic jam for about 4 hours in three routes. They are from Singaraja, Banyuatis and Bedugul or Denpasar. From the information received earlier, it was said that there could be a traffic jam on Umanis Galungan day at the route Denpasar-Bedugul- Singaraja. This happened because most Buleleng non-residents who went to home village for Galungan celebration were going back to South Bali in the same time. Meanwhile
in the same time, South Bali nonresidents who are students that just celebrated as well were going back to Singaraja for their studies. In addition to that, Buleleng and Southern Bali residents who went for holiday at Bedugul had to come back to their places that afternoon as well. So this whole situation made Bedugul area very crowded. This rare situation happened between 4 PM wita until 8 PM wita. It happened when there were hundreds of motorbikes and cars coming from Singaraja going towards Denpasar, from Banyuatis going to Denpasar and from Denpasar going to Singaraja met in the ramp located at east of
Buyan Lake. Vehicles from the top of the mount could not move forward because of the vehicles at the bottom and so were the other way. Drivers could not go back because there were more and more vehicles coming. They could not go to the west side as it’s a gorge and lake while to the east is a forest cliff. The total traffic happened from Baturiti in the south, from Gitgit in the north and also from Gobleg village in the Banyuatis route. The Traffic Unit Police of Buleleng came to location and tried to separate the vehicles that crowded the streets. With their full attempt also joined by some drivers, the traffic ended at 8 PM wita. Emergency budget set for June 22 AFP
LONDON (AFP) – The new coalition government will hold an emergency budget on June 22, finance minister George Osborne announced Monday as he laid out plans to tackle the nation’s record deficit. The budget will be based on forecasts from a new independent body, he said, which will make an audit of everything from outstanding contracts to pension liabilities to assess the scale of the challenge facing the new administration. The Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition led by Prime Minister David Cameron has made tackling the deficit a priority and promised cuts worth £6 billion this year. In their coalition agreement, signed five days after May 6 elections produced a hung parliament, the government promised its first budget within 50 days. Osborne said he believed they needed “to act even sooner to restore confidence in our economy”, which has been battered by a deep recession. “The budget date will be Tuesday, 22 June, exactly six weeks or 42 days from the signing of the coalition agreement,” he told reporters. Osborne also announced the creation of a new Office for Budget Responsibility to make a “truly independent assessment” of the scale
of the deficit and to make forecasts of economic growth and government borrowing. “For the first time we will have a truly independent assessment of the state of the nation?s finances,” he said. The chancellor of the exchequer admitted he was creating a “rod for my back” but said: “That is the whole point. We need to fix the budget to fit the figures, not fix the figures to fit the budget.” The OBR would produce a first set of figures before the emergency budget, when Osborne will set out the government’s spending plans, measures to boost enterprise and reform the tax system to make it “fairer.” Plans to cut £6 billion from non-frontline public services this financial year will be outlined next Monday, he said. The “great majority” of the savings would be used to start paying down the deficit of £163.4 billion, Osborne said. “The Treasury’s assessment is that there is a strong economic case for an immediate spending reduction of six billion pounds. So we are in no doubt that this action is advisable,” he said. “By tackling wasteful spending now rather than later, we can demonstrate our commitment to tackling the deficit.”

Iran to ship uranium to Turkey in nuclear deal AP
TEHRAN, Iran – Iran agreed Monday to ship most of its enriched uranium to Turkey in a nuclear fuel swap deal that could ease the international standoff over the country’s disputed nuclear program and deflate a U.S.-led push for tougher sanctions. The deal was reached in talks with Brazil and Turkey, elevating a new group of mediators for the first time in the dispute over Iran’s nuclear activities. The agreement was nearly identical to a U.N.drafted plan that Washington and its allies have been pressing Tehran for the past six months to accept in order to deprive Iran — at least temporarily — of enough stocks of enriched uranium to produce a nuclear weapon. The United States and the other world powers had no immediate comment as to whether the new deal
would satisfy them and stave off a fourth round of U.N. sanctions. The heart of the deal is a swap in which Iran would send abroad most of its low-enriched uranium and in return received fuel rods of mediumenriched uranium to use in a Tehran medical research reactor that produces isotopes for cancer treatment. But for months, Iran has haggled over the terms, making counterproposals that were repeatedly rejected by the U.S. and its allies. With the deal announced Monday, Tehran seems to have agreed to almost all of the original terms. However, mak-
ing the deal with Turkey and Brazil may have been more palatable, allowing Iran to argue that it did not bend to American pressure. “It was agreed during the trilateral meeting of Iranian, Turkish and Brazilian leaders that Turkey will be the venue for swapping” Iran’s stocks of enriched uranium for fuel rods, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on state TV. Washington has cited the Iranians’ intransigence against the original deal as proof of the need for new U.N. sanctions. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the new deal meant Iran was willing to “open a constructive road.” “There is no ground left for more sanctions or pressure,” he told reporters in Iran, according to Turkey’s private NTV television.
Reports: Hatoyama, Clinton to discuss US base AP
TOKYO – Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, who will reportedly meet with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton this week, vowed Monday to do all he can to resolve an impasse over the future of a major American Marine base by the end of the month. Hatoyama is under increasing pressure to come up with a plan to move operations off the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma on the southern island of Okinawa in keeping with a pledge he made before becoming Japan’s leader last September. He has promised to resolve the is-
sue by the end of this month, though that goal now seems unrealistic because Okinawans oppose his suggested solutions and the United States is holding firm to an earlier agreement that Hatoyama wants to revise. Hatoyama will meet with Clinton in Tokyo on Friday to discuss the issue, according to reports over the weekend in several Japanese newspapers. Government officials in Tokyo and Washington refused to confirm Clinton’s schedule. “I knew from the start the situation would be tough,” Hatoyama told reporters Monday. “I will do all I can by the end of the month.”
Apart from the U.S. base issue, Clinton and Hatoyama are likely to discuss the sinking of a South Korean warship in March that killed 46 South Korean sailors, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK Monday. A Japanese Foreign Ministry official declined to confirm the report. South Korea has not directly blamed North Korea for the sinking, and Pyongyang has denied involvement, but suspicion has focused on the North given its history of attacks. The two Koreas remain technically locked in a state of war because their three-year conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, in 1953.
Okinawa hosts more than half the 47,000 U.S. troops in Japan under a security pact. To ease Okinawa’s burden, Japan and the U.S. agreed in 2006 to move the sprawling Futenma air field to a less crowded part of the island, and move 8,600 Marines from Okinawa to Guam. Hatoyama froze the 2006 deal amid local opposition and has been searching for alternatives. He has floated the idea of building a replacement airstrip on raised pilings to reduce its environmental impact on nearby coral reefs, and of shifting training by the Marines to other areas outside of Okinawa. MANILA (AFP) – At least four people including a provincial governor were killed when a helicopter crashed in the Philippines on Monday, police said. The helicopter, carrying governor Rafael Nantes, two security escorts and a pilot went down in a residential area of Lucena city just moments after taking off, said local police director Chief Inspector Bing Baasis. Baasis said all four aboard were killed. Nantes, governor of Quezon province, was taking the chartered helicopter to a meeting in Manila about 100 kilometres (60 miles) away when the incident occurred, Rizza Salvana, an aide of the governor, told AFP. Television reports quoted eyewitnesses as saying that a woman on the ground was also killed when

NEW YORK – The mothers of three American hikers held for 10 months in Iran know that their visit with their children may be brief so they’ve thought about what they want to say and do. Cindy Hickey wants to make sure her son and the two friends imprisoned with him see that there’s a future in which they’re free — a light at the end of the tunnel. “We want to see our kids and let them know: We’re going to do everything we possibly can. ... This will be done,” Hickey said Sunday after arriving in New York. The trio expect to fly to Iran within days. Hickey’s son, 27-year-old Shane Bauer, his girlfriend, Sarah Shourd, and their friend Josh Fattal were arrested along the Iraqi border last July and accused by Iran of spying. Relatives say the three were on vacation in the scenic Kurdistan region of northern Iraq and, if they crossed the border, it was by accident. Now that she and the other mothers have been granted visas to Iran and believe they’ll be able to visit their children, Laura Fattal is intent on using whatever time she gets with her son to listen. The suburban Philadelphia woman wants to hear about her 27year-old son’s day-to-day existence and how the trio has gotten by. They’ve been permitted so few visits from the outside — only three by the Swiss diplomats charged with visiting them in prison since the U.S. has no official presence in Iran, she says. She wants to give them the chance to be heard. Nora Shourd wants to squeeze
her daughter extra tight. Not just for a hug — although there’s that too. She wants to feel through the loose covering she expects 31-yearold Sarah will be wearing to make sure she’s not just skin and bones. And the mothers want to give them letters and photographs that they hope their children will be allowed to keep with them — tangible pieces of home. For Sarah, who her family says is kept alone in a cell for all but about 30 minutes a day, her mother has brought pens and empty books, in the hopes she’ll be able to write. There are photos of Sarah’s sister’s wedding, which she missed. Bauer’s youngest sister, Shannon, made a tiny booklet for her brother that folds out into a large photo spread covered in messages. “We think about you every day,” one note reads. “I always try to keep you with me on nice days so you can feel the sun.” Nora Shourd worries especially about the effect that near-solitary confinement may be having on her always social daughter. With no one to talk to, Sarah had become seriously depressed, Nora Shourd says she was told by the Swiss diplomats who visited the trio in April. The diplomats also reported that Sarah was suffering a serious gynecological condition, while Bauer had a stomach ailment. “These kids haven’t had the simple basic stuff that they get from their mothers for a long time now,” said Shourd. “We want to give them
as much of that as we can in our visits. I don’t know how we can do that other than to give them the hope that they’ll walk out that door.” The mothers, too, have given up much. Hickey has indefinitely closed the business she’s owned for years. Nora Shourd has taken a leave of absence from work, sublet her Oakland, Calif., home and moved in with Hickey in rural Pine City, Minn. She’s postponed having necessary surgery while dealing with the crisis, she says, although she doesn’t want to give any details. Sitting now in a hotel room in Manhattan, the first step of their journey to Iran over, Laura Fattal shares what she calls “such a good day dream” with the other two women. She pictures standing all of them in a group hug with their kids, and then being able to bring them home. It’s a vision that seems so close to all of them. They say they’re convinced they may be able to leave Iran accompanied by their children, who have not been brought to trial or publicly charged with a crime. Hickey knows there’s another possibility. But it’s one she says she tries not to think about because it’s so overwhelming. “Going to see them, and coming home without them, and knowing they have to stay in those same conditions would be overwhelming,” she says.

Police Chief denies terror crackdowns to divert public attention Antara
SUKABUMI - National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri has denied the recent police crackdowns on terrorist networks in several locations in the country were meant to divert public attention from Susno Duadji’s arrest. “We are not diverting public attention (from the Susno Duadji case). It is not true,” Danuri told reporters after briefing cadets at the police training institute here Monday. He made the remark in response to former legislator Ali Mochtar Ngabalin’s allegation. Ngabalin said earlier that the antiterrorist operations in Jakarta and Central Java last week might have been meant to make the public forget the Susno Duadji case. Danuri denied the allegation saying police investigators had handled the Susno Duadji case transparently. They were also doing their job according to existing procedures.
“The ongoing operations against terrorists are a continuation of our actions in Aceh not long ago,” he said. “At present, police investigations into the terrorism cases are still going on so it is not true we are trying divert public attention,” he said. Susno Duadji was the whistle blower on judicial mafia cases and engineering practices within the police force in connection with the Gayus Tambunan money laundering and corruption cases. However, after being quizzed for several times as a witness, former police chief detective Commissioner General Susno Duadji was named a suspect in an alleged bribery case and detained since May 11. Danuri said Susno Duadji’s legal process was still going on and so were the terrorism cases. “We are going to submit his case to the prosecution office in the near future. The transparency of his case can be observed at court. There is no orchestration at all in his case,”
Danuri said. Susno Duadji was detained after being accused of receiving a bribe of Rp500 million in connections with the Arowana fish farm case. The police investigators based their decision to detain Susno bassed on testimonies of Sjahril Djohan, Haposan Hutagalung, and Adjunct Senior Commissioner Syamsu Rizal. Sjahril Djohan and Haposan Hutagalung had previously been arrested for their alleged involvement in the Gayus Tambunan case. The police quizzed Susno about the arowana fish farm case because it might have involved Haposan Hutagalung and Sjahril Djohan. The arowana fish farm case was related to a dispute between a Singaporean businessman (only identified as HKH) and his Indonesian counterpart (only identified as AS alias Am). HKH reportedly had given Rp100 billion to his Indonesian partner to engage in the arowana fish business in Pekanbaru, Riau Province.

JAKARTA - Norway wished their climate change funds be used for forest conservation program in Indonesia. “In various discussions, Norway wished that its climate change funds be used for deforestation and degradation prevention, including prevention of fores fires and opening of peat forests,” Fitrian told ANTARA in Jakarta Friday commenting on Indonesia’s opportunity to get the climate change funds from Norway.
Norway has given one billion US dollars in climate change funds for forest conservation in the Amazon, Brazil. “Norway and Brazil agreed to save and preserve what is left of the Amazon forests,” he said. Therefore, he said, Norway deemed it more necessary to save and preserve forests than the planting of one million trees, which the Indonesian government is proposing to be funded by the Norwegian climate change funds. “Although prominent figures who caused trouble in this country for the last 10 years had been paralysed... they continue to carry out terror acts after their release from jail,” Yudhoyono told reporters. National police chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri on Friday said 58 terror suspects had been arrested and 13 people killed in anti-terror operations nationwide since the discovery of militant training camp in Aceh in February. But he said others were still at large, including Abdullah Sunata and a senior regional terror leader, Umar Patek. Sunata was jailed in 2006 for possessing illegal weapons and protecting slain regional terror leader Noordin Mohammad Top. After Sunata’s release in April
2009 he led a militant group in terror attacks including a plot to kill Yudhoyono and foreigners during an independence day celebration on August 17, police said. “They continue to commit terror acts as they wanted to turn Indonesia into an Islamic country,” the president said. On March 9 police killed the alleged leader of the Aceh group, Dulmatin, who was considered one of the masterminds of the 2002 nightclub bombings in Bali that killed 202 people, mostly Western tourists. Dulmatin had been a leader of regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) but analysts believe the Aceh group was a new, more extreme outfit which combined militants from various Islamist organisations around Southeast Asia.

It is being done in stages,” General Santoso said here Monday. So far there had been no request from the White House for security at specific places Obama wanted to visit, except in Jakarta, he said. The Indonesian government is making preparations for United States President Barack Obama’s planned visit to Indonesia in June this year. Recently, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah in a press statement said that although the exact dates of Obama’s visit were still not known, the government had already begun making preparations for the visit assuming the US leader would come in the middle or late June. Faizasyah said although the White House had yet to inform In-
donesia about dates of Obama’s visit, the government had already started to make the necessary preparations for the visit. Obama was expected to arrive in Jakarta on March 23 for a three-day visit, later than it was initially scheduled on March 18, 2010, but later delayed to June 2010. His visit to Indonesia, Australia, and Guam had been delayed because he had to stay in Washington for an expected tight vote in the US House of Representatives on a controversial health care reform bill. The March delay in the visit to Indonesia, where Obama had spent three years as a young lad, came as no surprise because the then presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal said that even before the postponement; President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had suggested the visit be delayed until June. At that time Dino said the postponement was understandable because it was due to political necessity, because it was important to President Obama that Indonesia was an important country and there was a strong commitment to launch a comprehensive partnership.

Bali Today Ninety tons of grain loss due to dredging activities on agricultural land Bali Post
GIANYAR — Dredging activities in the area of productive land by investors running the business in backfill soil located at Subak Amping and Subak Uma Dewa, Keramas Village, Blahbatuh Subdistrict, Gianyar, caused the loss of 90 tons of rice each harvest season. In addition, the dredging process on productive agricultural land owned by residents selling the backfill soil had resulted in the damage and it would take 15 years to restore the soil fertility. It was delivered by an agricultural observer Prof. I Wayan Supartha in the midst of implementation of bazaar program of poverty reduction at Wantilan Hall of Pura Desa Keramas, last Sunday (May 16). Of the total 90 tons of lost grain in each harvest season, if calculated the farmers would suffer a loss worth IDR 4.5 million per season. However, based on the calculation it was very ironic that environmental damage occurred at both subak areas. This condition should be responded promptly by the government. The awareness of community, chiefly the land owners, in this matter should observe the process of dredging occurred. As a matter of fact, the dredging activity was very hazardous to the landowner. Dredging activities downward in such a depth and large volume could make the soil condition not good, including the power of water infiltration. The damage could only be restored over 15 years. “This is not re-
alized by the residents as the owner of agricultural land,” he said. Local government should quickly respond to the dredging activity on productive agricultural land. At the moment, the legislation governing the excavation issue has been carried in the Regional Regulation of Bali Province No.5/2007. If Gianyar Regency happened to have not had the rules about it, juridically the provincial legislation could be used as a reference. “Now, it just waits for the seriousness of all parties to overcome the problem. In this regard, the regent may issue a regulation to prevent the spread of the practice,” he explained. More ironically, with uncontrolled excavation activities conducted by the investor, definitely teens of hectares of agricultural area would be damaged by dredging activity not only at the agricultural land. Condition of the roads would be damaged and air pollution occurred would disturb the sur-
rounding community. Previously, regarding to the excavation activities of backfill soil performed on dozens of hectares of agricultural land in the area of Subak Amping and Subak Uma Dewa had been discussed through a meeting between the members of subak, pekaseh (subak head), village head and investors in the office of Blahbatuh Subdistrict. Also present on that occasion were related agencies, Gianyar Environmental Agency, Regional Revenue Service, Licensing Agency and Officials of Blahbatuh Subdistrict. Farmland soil dredging activity carried out since 1995 had been appealed and approved not to be extended and deepened temporarily. Meanwhile, the remaining dredged soil could be carried for sale. In addition, the investors were appealed to terminate the contract agreement with farmers until the permit for such activities was issued. (kmb16)

DENPASAR – The number of tourists from China visited Bali during January through March 2010 period was 58,225 people. The number increased 3% compared to the similar period last year which was 56,031 tourists. Ida Komang Wisnu, the head of Bali Statistics Department, said “all of the tourists from China who came on that period were coming using air transportation. None of them were using the sea transport.” He said that in 2009, the total number of tourists from China visited Bali was 206,151, increased
56% compared to in 2008 which was 131,319 tourists. Bali has 766 tour guides who are able to speak mandarin that can handle the tourists from China. They can take the tourists to visit the tourism sites in Bali. Wisnu said that China is the third largest tourists visited Bali after the tourists from Australia and Japan. China contributed 10% from the total number of foreign tourists visited Bali which was 563,778 tourists. story told of this Pejeng nekara as the ear-plug of Kebo Iwa, a powerful legendary figure who was able to carve Goa Gajah, steep bank temple of Gunung Kawi, etc. The Pejeng nekara has been introduced internationally by G.E. Rumphius, an expert in Biology through his book Amboinsche Rariteitkamer, published in 1705. Although he never been to Bali, but he had succeeded for using the information from Hendrik Leydekereker’s. In fact, this nekara is a giant nekara with large size in every detail as in height of 186.5 m and a diameter of 1.60 m for its hit zone. Around the archeological experts, this nekara is also called as nekara with head, because it has four pairs of mask decoration with bulged-out eyes, long-coned nose, and the ears wearing earrings made from coins. The decoration of the
mask is not only functioned as esthetic-decorative, but more for magical symbolism for the ancestors’ symbol of magic power which bring prosperity and protect the family or the society from any danger. Another decoration which has the magical symbolism is the decoration of octagonal star on the hit zone, border design, feather, and so on. “Bulan Pejeng” is a masterpiece work of technology and metallurgy that reached its peak on Bronze Age. This cultural heritage is a significant mixture between modern and complicated metal technology and art creativity which full magical symbolism values as can be seen from its shape and patterns. All of it is the proof of a local Balinese wisdom in its spectacular work about 2000 years ago, far before India reached Bali. The dynamism of Balinese wisdom at that time also was proved by
finding five stone moulds in Manuaba Village, Gianyar for making smaller nekara from Pejeng nekara. This fact has proved enough that Balinese people had succeeded in developing local metal industry. In addition, Balinese people had produced a stone nekara which is kept in a temple in Carangsari Village (Badung), is now another success of Balinese wisdom. The other bronze nekara in Pacung, Ularan (Buleleng), Ban (Karangasem), Manikliyu (Bangli), Peguyangan (Badung) is a proof that local metal industry in Bali reached its top. According to the results of archeological research can be known that at Bronze Age, megalithic tradition was also developed around the world. Lightly oil an 8-inch frying pan, and pour 3 tablespoon of the batter into the pan. Make sure the pan is equally covered with the batter so it becomes a thin layer pancake. Fry for one minute, turn the pancake over and fry for another minute. Remove and set aside. Place 2 Tbs. of the coconut mixture on the near edge of the pancake. He had been asked to respond to comments by US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who said he expected China would allow the yuan to rise against the dollar. “China will improve the yuan’s exchange rate regime according to the development of and trends in the global economy as well as the Chinese economy,” Yao said. Beijing is under growing international pressure, led by the United States, for a stronger yuan. The currency has effectively been pegged at about 6.8 to the dollar since mid-2008. Critics say this gives Chinese exporters an unfair advantage by making their products relatively cheaper. Yao’s comments came ahead of a twice-a-year “strategic and economic dialogue” at which Geithner and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will meet their Chinese counterparts in Beijing on May 24-25. Geithner has eschewed demands from Congress for US sanctions against China for currency manipulation, preferring quiet diplomacy as US unemployment festers and Congress heads towards mid-term elections later this year. Yao predicted China’s trade surplus, a long-time source of friction with its trading partners, would fall this year as exports are expected to stay weak — comments apparently indicating Beijing will not soften its stance on the yuan. “The full-year trade surplus will slump by a large margin and the trade imbalance problem will improve,” he said. “We will keep export policies generally stable given... the volatility of the international financial markets and that (Chinese) exporters were still facing difficulties.” China posted a surplus of 16.1 billion dollars in the first four months of the year, down 78.6 percent year-onyear, after recording a monthly deficit of 7.2 billion dollars in March — its first in six years. Yao predicted last month the trade surplus would shrink by 100 billion dollars this year from 2009, when the figure stood at 196 billion dollars.

MANAMA - The conclusion of the stalled Doha Round of free trade talks is crucial to the recovery from the global financial crisis, World Trade Organization chief Pascal Lamy said on Sunday. “The Doha Round, at this moment of the crisis exiting, is a vitally needed and, to be frank, a very low cost global economic stimulus package,” Lamy told participants at an economic forum in Bahrain. “Estimates suggest that the implementation of this round... would inject to the tune of 300-400 billion dollars a year into the global economy,” he told participants at the Bahrain Global Forum. The Doha Round of talks launched in 2001 were due to be wrapped up in March, according to a target set by the G20 group of leading and emerging economies, but previous deadlines have been repeatedly missed. The negotiations have focused on dismantling obstacles to trade for poor nations by striking an accord that would cut agriculture subsidies and tariffs on industrial goods. Discussions have been dogged by disagreements over issues including how much the United States and the European Union should reduce aid to their farmers and the extent to which developing countries such as India, China and South Africa should lower tariffs. “When we look at the agricultural subsidies of members such as the EU, the US, Japan or Switzerland that have crowded developing world exports out of international markets, you discover the need for the Doha Round,” Lamy said. “These subsidies would be slashed by about 80 percent,” if the
talks were to reach a conclusion. The WTO director-general highlighted US resistance to the Doha Round resulting from different congressional interests, saying that Washington was trying to get more concessions. “The US are seriously attempting to conclude these negotiations on more US terms than what’s already on the table,” he said, adding such a position might “trigger counter requests”. But he said negotiations were at a stage where political intervention was needed from US President Barack Obama to “take the risk” of sending a bill to Congress. Last month, members of the Cairns Group of agricultural exporters urged resistance to protectionism and the revival of the Doha Round. The Cairns Group comprises Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand and Uruguay. In his address, Lamy noted however that WTO members have adhered to commitments made through the organization by not returning to protectionist policies despite the global crisis. “Trade is as open today as it was at the beginning of the crisis,” he said, adding this showed the WTO members’ “refusal to turn their backs on policies that helped integrate them into the world economy.” Lamy also said that world trade was recovering after dropping due to the crisis. “Today, we are seeing a V-shaped recovery of world trade. After a fall of 12 percent terms in 2009, we now forecast a rebound of world trade of about 9.5 percent this year,” he said.

The 24-year-old Miss resident of the state of Michigan beat out 50 other women to take the title Sunday night, despite nearly stumbling in her evening gown. She told reporters later that she believed she had won after glancing at pageant owner Trump as she awaited the results with the first runner-up, Miss Oklahoma USA Morgan Elizabeth Woolard. “That’s the same look that he gives them when he says, ‘You’re hired,’” on Trump’s reality TV show “The Apprentice,” she said. “She’s a great girl,” said Trump, who owns the pageant with NBC in a joint venture. Fakih took top honors at the pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip after strutting confidently in an orange and gold bikini, wearing a strapless
white gown that resembled a wedding dress and saying health insurance should cover birth control pills. Fakih, an Arab-American from Dearborn, Michican, told pageant organizers her family celebrates both Muslim and Christian faiths. She moved to the United States as a baby and was raised in New York, where she attended a Catholic school. Her family moved to Michigan in 2003. Pageant officials said historical pageant records were not detailed enough to show whether Fakih was the first Arab American, Muslim or immigrant to win the Miss USA title. The pageant started in 1952 as a local bathing suit competition in Long Beach, California. Fakih told reporters she sold her car after graduating college in Michigan to help pay for her run in the Miss
Michigan USA pageant. In a moment that was replayed during the broadcast, Fakih nearly fell while finishing her walk in her gown because of the length of its train. But she made it without a spill and went on to win. “I did it here, I better not do it at Miss Universe,” she said. “Modeling does help, after all.” Fakih replaces Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton and won a spot representing the United States this summer in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. She also gets a one-year lease in a New York apartment with living expenses, an undisclosed salary, and various health, professional and beauty services. GENEVA – Cell phone users worried about getting brain cancer aren’t off the hook yet. A major international study into the link between cell phone use and two types of brain cancer has proved inconclusive, according to a report due to be published in a medical journal Tuesday. A 10-year survey of almost 13,000 participants found most cell phone use didn’t increase the risk of developing meningioma — a common and frequently benign tumor — or glioma — a rarer but deadlier form of cancer. There were “suggestions” that using cell phones for more than 30 minutes each day could increase the risk of glioma, according to the study by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer. But the authors added that “biases and error prevent a causal interpretation” that would directly blame radiation for the tumor. Longer call times appeared to pose a greater risk than the number of calls made, the study found.
Among the factors that weren’t examined were the effects of using handsfree devices during calls or the risk of having cell phones close by while not making calls — such as in a pocket, or next to the bed at night. The authors acknowledged possible inaccuracies in the survey from the fact that participants were asked to remember how much and on which ear they used their mobiles over the past decade. Results for some groups showed cell phone use actually appeared to lessen the risk of developing cancers, something the researchers described as “implausible.” The authors said further investigation is necessary before they can conclude with certainty that there is no link between cell phone radiation
and brain cancer, partly because people’s use of the devices has changed considerably since the start of the study in 2000. Scientists are also planning to examine whether cell phone use increases the risk of tumors in the ear’s acoustic nerve and the parotid gland, where saliva is produced. A separate study will look into the effects of cell phone use on children, who are believed to be more susceptible to the effects of radiation. The paper, which will be published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, was compiled by researchers in 13 countries including Britain, Canada, France, Germany and Japan, but not the U.S. Scientists interviewed 12,848 participants, of which 5,150 had either meningioma or glioma tumors. Almost a quarter of the euro19.2 million ($24 million) required to fund the study was provided by the cell phone industry, though WHO said measures were taken to ensure the scientists’ independence was protected.
SINGAPORE/HONG KONG – British bank Standard Chartered is replacing the Blackberry, currently its standard corporate communications device, with the iPhone, a move that could eventually result in thousands of bankers switching to the Apple device for business communication on the go. Standard Chartered bankers in Asia told Reuters that the Londonbased lender was giving its corporate Blackberry users the option of switching to the iPhone, with the company agreeing to continue to pay monthly billing for businessrelated telephone and data services. “It’s a group-wide initiative involving wholesale and consumer banks globally,” said a Singaporebased spokeswoman for Standard Chartered, told Reuters. The spokeswoman declined to be identified due to company policy. The process of migrating corporate email services from the Blackberry to the iPhone started about a month ago, said the spokeswoman, although she did not know how many of the Asia-focused bank’s 75,000 employees used companyissued Blackberries or when the switchover could be completed. Bankers at other financial institutions such as HSBC Holdings Plc and Morgan Stanley have so far been
restricted to the Blackberry as the standard device issued by their firms for business communications. Despite some indications of change, it may take time for a broader switch to take place, mainly because of security concerns, according to financial professionals and information technology analysts. “If more companies switch to the iPhone, this is of course bad news for RIM,” said Lu Chialin, an IT industry analyst at Macquarie Securities in Taipei. “However, it will take a long time for companies to do their own internal testing before deciding to change, so it will be a while before it has any effect on RIM.” Blackberries, from Canada’s Research in Motion, are the device of choice for bankers and executives who need regular access to email and the Internet when outside the office. “People are always switching. I saw there were people switching to Blackberries as well,” said Gregory Shea, RIM’s China managing director. “I think the point is it’s a very dynamic market. Inter grab fifth successive title MILAN - Inter Milan clinched a fifth consecutive Serie A crown after a nervy 1-0 final-day victory at Siena. Diego Milito scored the only goal in the second half of the match at Stadio Artemio Franchi as Inter finished the season two points clear of second-placed Roma, who were 2-0 winners at Chievo. The win secures Inter’s second title under coach Jose Mourinho, and guarantees the Nerazzurri a place in the record books as the first team to win five back-to-back league titles since Juventus achieved the feat in the 1930s. MADRID – Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola saluted his players for retaining the La Liga title, but admitted he felt his team should also be in Saturday’s Champions League final at the Santiago Bernabeu. BERLIN – Germany captain Michael Ballack has been forced out of the World Cup finals due to an ankle injury which has sidelined him for two months, the German football federation (DFB) said Monday. Chelsea forward Ballack was told he could play no part in the June 11July 11 finals after a scan revealed the severity of an ankle injury suffered in the FA Cup final win over Portsmouth on Saturday. Too old to chase a title? Not these days. Ray Allen scored 25 points, Paul Pierce had 22 and the Celtics used smothering defense to beat the Orlando Magic 92-88 on Sunday in the Eastern Conference finals opener. Hampered by injuries, the Celtics literally limped their way through parts of the regular season. All that seems a distant memory now. “I honestly say we lost ourselves,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. “I think we’ve found ourselves again.” Rasheed Wallace added 13 points as the Celtics built a 20-point lead, then held on late to snap Orlando’s 14-game winning streak. LOS ANGELES, California – Britain’s Mark Cavendish used a finishing sprint in the first stage of the 2010 Tour of California to seize the leader’s yellow jersey on Sunday. The 10-time Tour de France stage winner edged out second place finisher Juan Jose Haedo (Saxo Bank) of Argentina while Norway’s Alexander Kristoff (BMC) was third in the 168 kilometre road stage from Nevada City, California to Sacramento. The second phase takes place Monday on 176 km course between Davis and Santa Rosa, in the northern half of the state. There are eight stages in the Tour of California which finishes Sunday in the hills above Los Angeles. Cavendish who rides for the American HTC-Columbia team, was timed
in four hours, four minutes and 46 seconds. “It’s seven weeks to go for the Tour de France and it gave the team confidence,” said Cavendish. “We should get the same results as we did last year at the Tour de France.” With a 10-second bonus time for his win, Cavendish will benefit from a four-second race lead over Haedo and a six-second margin over Kristoff for the second stage. Three-time defending race winner Levi Leiphiemer and RadioShack teammate Lance Armstrong finished in the main field in the same time as the winner. Five riders, including former world titlists Tom Boonen (Quick Step) of Belgium and Stuart O’Grady of Australia crashed on the final circuit. The fallen riders finished and
were given the same time as the winner. Cavendish earned his third career stage win in the five year history of the race. He remained behind several teammates as the field of 128 riders approached the beginning of the three final circuits around Sacramento. He then moved to the front inside the final kilometres and was briefly challenged by Haedo. Maarten Tjallingii (Rabobank), Marc De Maar (United Healthcare) both of the Netherlands and Americans Chad Beyer (BMC), Paul Mach (Bissell) emerged from the field after about 16 kilometres. The foursome built more than a five-minute lead and rode at the front for nearly four hours before being caught about 16 kilometres from the finish.

Victories set to secure Webber’s future Monaco - Mark Webber’s stunning back-to-back victories in Spain and Monaco appear to have secured his future at Red Bull Racing, with team chiefs saying they have no doubt that they should keep him on board for next season. On a weekend when Webber moved to the top of the world championship standings, Red Bull bosses opened talks with the Australian’s management about extending his deal - which finishes at the end of this season. With the form of the RB6 making a seat at the team one of the main targets for any leading driver, team principal Christian Horner has dropped the firmest hint yet that Webber will remain alongside Sebastian Vettel next season. “I am very happy with the balance and dynamics in team, and there is nothing that we would change for,” Horner told AUTOSPORT. Although Webber himself said at the Monaco Grand Prix that he was in no rush to sort out his future with his form leaving him as a target for rival outfits, Horner said he did not expect a lengthy negotiation

Should Webber get his new deal, then it will almost certainly mean the end of Kimi Raikkonen’s F1 career – with the Finn’s only real option for a return being at Red Bull. “We are very happy with the way that Mark is performing,” said Horner. “He is an important member of our team and he has got to a stage where, at 33 years of age, we said let’s take one year at a time – rather than signing some longwinded agreement. “It is all down to relationships and how he feels at the end of the day.
