Bali News Society responds recklessly to outbreak of rabies disease Denpasar (Bali Post)—
The widespread rabies disease in some regions in Bali is inseparable from the reckless behavior of local society in responding it. They will only address it seriously, if any one of their family members becomes a victim. Former Chairman of the Rabies Special Committee of Bali House, Nyoman Gede Putra Astawa, stated that government had indeed taken any attempts to prevent the transmission of rabies disease. Among them, they were done through distribution of anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) and comprehensive vaccination. Similarly, VAR inventories were felt to have been sufficient to meet the public demand. “I think the efforts of the executive have been maximal,” said Komang Putra Astawa, last Monday (Jun 14). When asked if such condition would impede Bali in realizing its target to reach the status of being free from rabies in 2010, the legislator from PDI-P faction stated the possibility could happen. He added

Such assistance could be in the form of self-consciousness to vaccinate the pets as well as other prevention efforts. “There should be self-awareness. No matter what sign it is giving to Bangli, four lives have gone in a time not reaching one week by tragic self hangings during the beginning of June. Now the total has reached 5 lives. Last Monday (15/6), the social disturbance happened again at Banjar Serongga, Songan Village, Kintamani. The victim is Jero Gede Pariasa (24), found dead dangling his neck with a plastic rope on his own jackfruit tree. The same incident happened at Songan, Banjar Dalem on the day before. I Wayan Guwet (70) found dead tragically hanging on his kitchen’s ceiling. On the beginning of June, the victim was Ni Nengah Dabdab - resident of Belancan, Kintamani, and then followed by I Nengah Mudarana – resident of Sidembunut, Bangli and I Made Bawa – resident of Guliang Kangin, Bangli last Saturday (12/6). Then on Sunday and Monday it happened again.
Seems most of the residents rather do this as a shortcut to get away from their depression over chronic diseases. Kintamani Police Sector Chief, Adjunct Police Commissioner I Made Oka with Bangli Police Department permission last Monday (14/6) confirmed that Gede Pariasa was found dead by his own dad, I Nyoman Nalun (70). Based on witnesses Nyoman Nalun, Nyoman Sarda and Jero Luh Sial confessions, it was suspected Pariasa was desperate to get over his depression on symptoms of paralytic illness that he had since 4 months ago. Efforts in treating the victim’s illness have been done by his family. But victim was not patience and got depressed. At the end he took a shortcut. Having an accident on the road Killed by a truck Tabanan (Bali Post)
Caused by no patience on the main road, I Gede Ardana (36) coming from Banjar Munduk Temu Kaja, Munduk Temu, Pupuan, Tabanan died tragically dragged by a bus. While going past a truck an accident happened last Monday (14/6) at DenpasarGilimanuk route, for exact at Banjar Singin, Selemadeg Village, Selemadeg, Tabanan. The accident happened around 12 pm wita where Ardana was riding a Honda Supra X motorcycle with number plate DK 4545 QJ from Denpasar with his wife Ni Nyoman Karmini (36) and second daughter Kadek Ayu Ariyantini (4). In a steep upwards road, he was brave enough to go past a truck in front of him. But from the opposite way a micro Bus Putra Luhur with number plate DK 1499 EI was heading downwards driven by I Made Mardita (50) from Banjar/Village Takmung, Banjarangkan, Klungkung. The bus hit Ardana and dragged him as it’s going downwards. The micro bus driver admitted he tried to brake but as it’s a steep road
and too close to Ardana’s motorcycle so it could not be avoided. The tragic accident made Ardana fractured his back neck bone, left foot, left rib also with active bleeding from mouth and nose. The victim died at location. His wife, Nyoman Karmini, was also hurt badly but her life was saved. She was hurt at the back of her right side head and severe scratch on the stomach caused by the road’s tar. His daughter Kadek Ayu was hurt on the same parts as her mother and also on the knee and a swollen right eye. Both are now intensive cared at Tabanan Local Hospital. Head of Traffic Tabanan Police Station, Adjunct Police Commissioner I Gede Made Punia with Head of Accidents Unit, Second Inspector I Nyoman Rauh explained that according to witnesses and investigation at location, the accident happened caused by the victim and it was going past the road lines. Balinese Making Art Creativity Your holiday to Bali will be more special in this month. to come true. In the past, the function of arts was more emphasized on the interest of religious ceremonies, either at temples or royal palaces. The art of dancing, playing gamelan and painting for instance, indeed presented to accompany the ritual procession, painting for temple ornaments, royal residences and the house of punggawa (royal official of high rank). Thus, artists can understand the secret of work conception as presentation and work as medium to make them closer to the Almighty God. Today, the Balinese make art creativity not only intended for the needs of ritual at temple or sanctum but also for tourist entertainment. Dissimilar forms of Balinese arts grow and develop following the dynamic of the tourism industry. Several art items as mass products are made to cater the needs of tourism. Its price can be inexpensive at art shop or tourist objects provided that you are good at bargaining. Sometimes, the paileh (storyline) of the dance and gamelan that is presented at hotel or tourism object are cut to be adjusted with the short time visits of tourist and hotel party’s can pay the artists cheaply. Balinese arts are generally classified into three: (1) wali arts, special sacred arts that are earmarked for ritual purpose and may not be performed at any places like Wayang Lemah, Sidakarya Mask, Sang Hyang Dedari and so on; (2) bebali art, namely arts that are staged at jaba pura (outermost courtyard of the temple) in relation to complete the ritual procession and entertain the devotees that carry out the ceremony—the artists are totally ngayah (without honorarium), they are just provided with food and drink; (3) balihbalihan art, namely art that is staged that has not something to do with the ritual and merely intended for entertainment like art performed at hotels, village meeting halls or arenas of Bali Arts Festival. UN warns rival Koreas against escalating tension AFP
UNITED NATIONS (AFP) – The UN Security Council has warned South and North Korea against escalating regional tension after hearing briefings by both sides on the sinking of a South Korean warship which Seoul blames on the North. The Security Council made a “strong call to the parties to refrain from any act that could escalate tension in the region” and to preserve peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, according to its president, Mexican Ambassador Claude Heller. Heller told reporters after the twin briefings that the council “is gravely concerned” about the incident and “its impact on peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.” Earlier Monday, a South Korean envoy called on the council to take action against the Stalinist North after giving evidence linking Pyongyang to the March sinking of a South Korean warship. “We hope that... the Security Council will take timely and appropriate measures against the provocation of North Korea,” said Yoon Duk-Yong, a physics and material science expert at the Ko-

UN urges Kyrgyz vote despite deadly unrest AP
BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan – The United Nations and the European Union on Tuesday urged Kyrgyzstan not to allow deadly ethnic unrest to derail a key constitutional referendum and parliamentary elections. The southern part of the impoverished Central Asian nation has been convulsed by days of ethnic rioting targeting minority Uzbeks, which has left the country’s second-largest city, Osh, in ruins and sent over 100,000 Uzbeks fleeing toward the border. Kyrgyzstan’s interim government, which took over when former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted in an April uprising, has been unable to stop the violence and accused Bakiyev’s family of instigating it to halt a June 27 referendum on a new constitution. Uzbeks have mostly backed the interim government, while many Kyrgyz in the south have supported Bakiyev.
The Health Ministry on Tuesday said the death toll from the clashes has reached 171, with nearly 1,800 injured. Observers believe the real figures to be much higher. Many refugees arriving in Uzbekistan had gunshot wounds, officials said. U.N. representative Miroslav Jenca said Tuesday in Bishkek that the June 27 referendum and parliamentary elections in October must go ahead despite the ethnic violence. “The referendum and the elections must be held at the announced times,” Jenca said. Tens of thousands of Uzbeks have been allowed entry into Uzbekistan, where they are being put up in makeshift accommodation in 30 different camps near the border. Some camps were centered in the eastern city of Andijan. Jenca said Tuesday that Uzbek authorities had counted 100,000 refugees, though it was not clear on which side of the border they were. Jallahitdin Jalilatdinov, who heads the Uzbek National Center in Kyrgyzstan, told The Associated Press on Monday that at least 100,000 Uzbeks were waiting to enter Uzbekistan, while another 80,000 had crossed the border.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – An American armed with a pistol and a 40-inch sword was detained in northern Pakistan and told investigators he was on a solo mission to kill Osama bin Laden, a police officer said Tuesday. The man was identified as 52year-old Californian construction worker Gary Brooks Faulkner, said officer Mumtaz Ahmad Khan. He was picked up in a forest in the Chitral region late on Sunday, he said. “We initially laughed when he told us that he wanted to kill Osama
bin Laden,” said Khan. But he said when officers seized the pistol, the sword and night-vision equipment, “our suspicion grew.” He was questioned Tuesday by intelligence officials in Peshawar, the main northwestern city. Faulkner told police he visited Pakistan seven times, and this was his third trip to Chitral. Police alleged the American intended to travel to the eastern Afghan region of Nuristan, just across the border from Chitral. The area is among several rumored hiding places for the al-Qaida leader, who has evaded a massive U.S. ef-
fort to capture him since 2001. Bin Laden is accused of being behind the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, as well other terrorist acts. Khan said Faulkner was also carrying a book containing Christian verses and teachings. When asked why he thought he had a chance of tracing bin Laden, Faulkner replied, “God is with me, and I am confident I will be successful in killing him,” said Khan. Faulkner arrived in the Chitrali town of Bumburate on June 3 and stayed in a hotel there. He was assigned a police guard, as is quite common for foreigners
visiting remote parts of Pakistan. When he checked out without informing police, officers began hunting for him, said Khan. U.S. Embassy spokesman Richard Snelsire said the mission had received notification from Pakistani officials that an American citizen had been arrested. COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh – Powerful landslides triggered by heavy rains killed at least 38 people and left seven army soldiers missing in southeastern Bangladesh. The mudslides struck early Tuesday in two areas in the southern coastal area of Cox’s Bazar — 185 miles (296 kilometers) south of the capital, Dhaka — and many victims were buried alive as they slept, said Giasuddin Ahmed, chief government administrator in the area. Ahmed said 19 bodies were initially recovered from landslides in Cox’s Bazar. Fourteen bodies were found later, said A.N.M. Nazim Uddin, another official overseeing the rescue operation in the district’s Teknaf area, bordering Myanmar. Another mudslide in a nearby district killed four members of a family, said police officer Zahirul Hoque
by phone. Huge chunks of mud buried the victims’ home, he said. Elsewhere, a 32-year-old woman died in Cox’s Bazar town after her thatched house was hit by a rush of mud. At least seven soldiers were also missing at a makeshift camp, Ahmed said. “We are trying to confirm what has happened there,” he told The Associated Press by phone as he headed to the scene. Desh TV, a Dhaka-based station, reported at least 39 deaths in the disaster. Video footage from ATN Bangla television showed rescuers, mostly villagers, removing mud from buried homes. Ahmed said the death toll could still rise. Rescue operations were continuing but rains hampered efforts with many main roads inundated. A depression in the Bay of Bengal caused incessant downpours in the hilly and forested region, causing the landslides.

MEXICO CITY – Gunmen killed 15 federal police officers Monday in separate attacks in two drug-plagued states, marking one of the bloodiest days for security forces since the government stepped up its fight with drug cartels. Twelve officers died in an ambush near a high school in the western state of Michoacan, while assailants killed three more officers in a northern border state. The latest in a series of mass slayings came as President Felipe Calderon defended his crackdown on traffickers in an essay on his office’s website. He vowed he won’t back down despite criticism that violence has only surged since he deployed thousands of troops and federal police in late 2006 seeking to crush the cartels. “I’m clearly convinced that we would be in a much worse situation if we hadn’t decided to fight criminals,” Calderon wrote in the 5,000word essay, which was published by several newspapers. “If we remain with our arms crossed, we will remain in the hands of organized crime, we will always live in fear,” the president said in the essay, which also blames Mexico’s violence on the United States’ voracious appetitive for illegal drugs. In the ambush in Michoacan, Calderon’s home state, officers riding in four pickup trucks were
returning from a patrol when they came under fire in the city of Zitacuaro, the federal Public Safety Department said in a statement. Ten officers died on the spot and two more on the way to a hospital. Thirteen other officers with wounds were taken to hospitals in Mexico City, the nearby city of Toluca and to the Michoacan state capital, Morelia, the Michoacan Public Safety Department said in a statement. The federal safety department said several assailants were also killed or wounded, but officials did not provide a number. In a separate statement, the department said gunmen killed three federal officers patrolling in the northern city of Chihuahua. One officer was wounded, the statement said. Brutal drug-gang violence has swept Michoacan, a state known for its picturesque colonial capital,
beaches and Monarch butterfly sanctuary, and as the place where Calderon first launched his crackdown. The state is a stronghold of La Familia, a cartel known for beheading its rivals and making bold attacks on government security forces. Among attacks on law enforcement, the bloodied and tortured bodies of 12 federal agents were found last year dumped along a highway in Michoacan. Police did not immediately identify attackers involved in Monday’s ambush or indicate whether they were suspected of being gunmen for La Familia. But the Public Safety Department did say the assailants picked up their wounded and dead and fled with them, a tactic often used by drug cartels. JAKARTA - An Indonesian court on Monday sentenced the driver of late terror leader Noordin Mohammed Top to eight years’ jail for abetting terrorism and plotting to assassinate the president. Amir Abdillah, 34, was convicted of concealing information about Malaysian-born Islamist Noordin and of taking part in preparations for a bomb attack on the convoy of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The sentence was lighter than the 10 years sought by prosecutors because he had cooperated with police and shown regret, the court heard. “It’s true he assisted in surveying the route which would be used by the president’s vehicle convoy. It’s true he knew about the plot to bomb the vehicle convoy,” chief judge Sudarwin told the South
Jakarta district court. Abdillah was arrested in the wake of twin suicide bombings on luxury hotels in Jakarta last July which killed seven people, the last in a series of deadly attacks blamed on Noordin and his extremist network. Police killed Noordin in a raid in September, ending one of Southeast Asia’s biggest manhunts. Despite the court’s leniency, Abdillah expressed little remorse as he spoke to reporters after the sentence had been handed down. He also claimed he was innocent of the most serious charges, including plotting to kill Yudhoyono. “I don’t know if this is a heavy or light sentence... Actually I only agreed that I hid information. The other things I’m not so sure about,” he said. “I just did as I was told... I was told to deliver ingredients for cakes. I didn’t know they were actually ex-
plosive materials. I was asked to drive a cleric around — I had no idea he was Noordin M. Top,” he added. Abdillah drove Noordin to meetings with terrorists, booked a room in West Java where the hotel attacks were planned and transported explosive materials to a house where a truck bomb was being assembled, prosecutors said. The truck bomb was intended for an attack on Yudhoyono around independence day on August 17 last year, but it never took place. Two Islamic extremists carrying backpacks filled with homemade bombs blew themselves up at the neighbouring JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels in downtown Jakarta on July 17. Abdillah was in a car near the hotels with fellow-Islamist Syaifudin Jaelani as he issued the orders via mobile phone to the bombers to initiate their attacks, prosecutors said.

JAKARTA - Indonesian teen heartthrob Nazril Ariel and his model girlfriend Luna Maya expressed shock Monday over an X-rated video that has appeared on the Internet apparently showing them having sex. The explicit but grainy video, which appears to have been shot by Ariel during the act, is one of two sexy celebrity clips doing the rounds of Indonesian cyberspace and fuelling calls for tighter controls of the Internet. The other appears to show Ariel, the 28-year-old lead singer of a band called Peterpan, having intercourse with his ex-girlfriend, model Cut Tari. In a joint interview with TVOne, Ariel and Maya said they were victims of defamation and urged fans not to jump to conclusions. But they did not clearly deny it was them in the video. “The thing is, this is not over yet. There is still an ongoing investigation process. It is not supposed to be exaggerated before there is confirmation,” Ariel responded when asked if it was him in the clip. TABANAN - On the Tumpek Krulut day coinciding with full moon of the tenth month of Balinese calendar, next Saturday (Jun 26), will be held a Mapedudusan Agung with Catur Niri Mesanggar Tawang ritual at the Kahyangan Jagat Luhur Natar Sari temple, Apuan Customary Village, Baturiti, Tabanan. Ida Batara is available for worship or nyejer for seven days and invites tens of Ratu Gede (about 81 barong effigies) from a number of temples in five regencies namely Tabanan, Badung, Gianyar, Bangli and Jembrana. It was revealed by Chairman of the Organizing Committee Wayan Budarmaja, accompanied by Chairman of Ritual Works Wayan Sarwa and other management, last Monday (Jun 14). This ceremony would be officiated by two higher priests namely Ida Pedanda Gede Putra Keniten from Griya Taman Belayu, Marga, and Ida Pedanda Gede Pesuruan from Griya Lukluk.

Balinese Culture Dalem Kayangan Kedaton Temple The temple is located in Kukuh village, Marga, Tabanan, around 18 km to the northwest of Denpasar city dan can be reached simply through Kediri city to the north for 5 km, then turn east to the temple (approximately for 300 m). In front of the temple, there are several souvenir shops, food and beverage and other facilities for the visitors. As reached the front, clearly seen that the temple was built hidden in the jungle of 6, 5 hectares, called Alas Kedaton which means “jungle possessed by the kingdom”. This fact holds symbolic meaning that Dalem Kayangan Kedaton as sacred place was built in a location where could give composure and spiritual clarity, away from the profane materialistic life. Archeological investigation showing the temple as an ancient possession in old times, originally just a plain prehistoric or pre-Hindu shrine from the advancing megalith tradition appeared to be several small menhir, composed-gravels, megalithic statue which up to this day is sacred for the local people to pray for the salvation from nature and the ancestors.
Other than that antiquity, inside the temple also can be found the evidences of the times when Hindu’s influence already broaden in entire Bali; namely pseudo-phallus, Durga Mahisasuramardini statue and Ganesa statue sitting on two dragons. Pretentiously, the Ganesa statue sitting on two dragons is candrasengkala (lunar chronogram) which symbolically means the year of 1286 Saka (Balinese year) or 1364 A.D, probably showing the construction year of Dalem Kayangan Kedaton Temple in the function as sacred worshiping medium for local people to this day. The field investigation went through the evidences of Balinese people local wisdom well kept in the uniqueness of the this temple, such as jeroan yard or utama mandala which is the most sacred part proved to be lower than other yards and equipped with four entrances from four directions. Divers clean garbage on the coral reefs in Nusa Dua Antara
DENPASAR – Seven divers cleaned the coral reef in Nusa Dua beach on Tuesday, June 15th 2010. Made Mandra, the director of Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC), said “we are trying to clean the coral reefs from garbage especially plastic garbage. We carry out the activities once every three months.” The program is called “Beach and Reef Clean Up”. The activities need to be done to preserve the coral reefs
and the marine habitat. “The hotels and society in the area conducted the cleaning activities to reduce the damage on the reefs,” Mandra said. In addition to clean the reefs, BTDC is also placing artificial coral reefs in the sea. There is great hope that the artificial reefs could help in developing the marine life. Pariama Hutasoit, the coordinator of Coral Reef Foundation Nusa Dua, said that the activity is the effort by the businessmen in Nusa Dua in preserving the environment.
“Plastic garbage is our main concern because it is very hard to be dissolved and very dangerous for environment,” he added. The activity also could increase the awareness of the people in keeping the environment clean and healthy. Pariama said “garbage is a serious problem all around the world including Bali. One of the areas that are disturbed by the garbage is the sea. Plastic garbage is very dangerous for the sea creatures and its environment.”

Directions Put in sugar and vanila in a large stockpot with water and bring it to a boil. Steam cassava until soft. Peel cassava. Crisp Sweet Striped Cookies (Kuping Gajah) Ingredients * 500 gram wheat flour * 150 gram granulated sugar * ½ tsp. salt * ½ tsp. vanilla * 2 eggs, lightly beaten * 1 Tbs. cooking oil * 100 cc water * ½ Tbs. cocoa powder * 800 cc oil for frying
Directions Thoroughly mix sugar, salt and vanilla. Add the beaten eggs and stir well. Add oil, stir once more, and then divide in half. Divide the flour in half as well. Take 1 Tbs of flour from one part and add it to the other. Mix the flour with each half of the sugar and egg mixture. Add cocoa powder to the smaller mix. Add 50 cc of water to each half. Knead until smooth and not sticky to the touch. There will be two types of dough, white and brown. Separately, roll both pieces of dough out on a plastic covered cutting board until they are about 1 mm thick. Place the two together, then roll up. Wrap with plastic and place in the refrigerator for approximately an hour or until the dough hardens. With a sharp knife, cut the dough vertically into flat cylinders about 2 mm thick. SAN FRANCISCO - The United States and seven other nations launched a second round of talks Monday to forge a Pacific trade deal that could become President Barack Obama’s first free trade agreement. As the talks for the Trans-Pacific Partnership kicked off, US lawmakers and business groups pushed for the conclusion of the deal by the end of next year. The United States is lagging behind its competitors such as the European Union and China in forging free trade and investment agreements, they said. The meeting in San Francisco was attended by officials from Australia, Brunei, Chile, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam, who discussed such issues as “technical barriers” to trade, market access, cross-border services, and the environment. Nearly 100 US companies and business groups meanwhile sent a letter Monday to Obama’s top trade official, Ron Kirk, setting an ambitious goal of concluding the TPP talks by November 2011, when Obama hosts fellow leaders to a summit of the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. “Time is of the essence,” said the letter, a copy of which was pro-
vided by the US Chamber of Commerce, a top business lobby group claiming to represent more than three million businesses. “As the global economy works toward recovery and our economic competitors, including the EU, Canada, India and China, are negotiating new trade agreements quickly among themselves, the United States is falling behind because it is not moving forward,” it said. “We are losing economic opportunities and being placed at a competitive disadvantage in major markets.” Lawmakers from Obama’s Democratic party also highlighted the need for the TPP to be an effective platform to enhance US exports and trade influence in the Asia-Pacific region. “The United States risks losing export share in an exploding market and ceding influence in the Asia-Pacific unless it is able to participate more vigorously in regional trade,” said a joint statement by Senators John Kerry and Jim Webb.
“Robust economic engagement in the Asia-Pacific is critical to President Obama’s goal of doubling exports in five years, retaining and creating good-paying American jobs, and demonstrating our long-term commitment to peace and prosperity in the region,” they said. Obama’s bold export goal is aimed at supporting two million new American jobs at a time when US unemployment is hovering near double digit levels. Among issues that need to be ironed out by the eight TPP negotiating nations is how the partnership will streamline overlapping bilateral free trade agreements among them. Trade ministers from the eight nations met in Japan earlier this month under the APEC forum and directed their negotiators “to seek consensus on the relationship between the TPP and the pre-existing FTAs among them.” The first round of the TPP negotiations was held in March in Melbourne, Australia.

MADRID - Seven Spanish regional savings banks announced Monday they have approved plans for an alliance that will help them survive the country’s uncertain economic outlook. The tie-up would be a so-called “cold fusion” or “virtual” merger where each bank would keep its own brand, balance sheet and legal structure but monitor solvency and liquidity centrally under a single management. It will create the country’s biggest savings bank by assets, surpassing Barcelona-based La Caixa. The boards of Caja Madrid — the country’s second largest savings bank by assets — Bancaja, the third biggest, Caja Insular de Ahorros de Canarias, Caixa Laietana, Caja de Avila, Caja Segovia and Caja Rioja
all approved the move. Caja Madrid said the groups will request 4.47 billion euros (5.47 billion dollars) from a state bailout fund known as the FROB, set up last year to help shore up the country’s weaker banks with an initial capitalisation of nine billion euros. Global financial markets have recently turned the spotlight on Spanish banks in the wake of the Greek debt crisis, which has raised fears that Madrid may also need an international rescue package like the one Athens received. Spanish banks got off relatively lightly from the global credit crunch in 2008 as the country’s strict rules meant they did not invest heavily in the high-risk US home loans that hurt financial institutions elsewhere. But many of Spain’s 45 re-
gional savings banks, many of which are controlled by regional politicians, have been badly exposed to bad debt following the collapse of the property sector at the end of 2008. The Spanish government has encouraged their consolidation in order to maintain liquidity. The Bank of Spain’s proposal to tighten rules on provisions the lenders have to make against real estate on their balance sheets has added to pressure on regional savings banks to merge. The approach of a June 30 deadline to tap the FROB has also acted as a catalyst. Spain’s regional savings banks account for half of the country’s total lending and ensuring their financial health is seen as key to helping the Spanish economy rebound from its worst recession in decades.

The investment deals are due to be signed on Tuesday during a visit to Athens by Chinese Vice-Premier Zhang Dejiang, the Financial Times reported, citing an unnamed Greek government official. “These concern maritime affairs, telecoms and a project to renovate a landmark tower building in Athens’ port of Piraeus,” the official was quoted as saying. Other deals including shipbuilding agreements worth 500 million euros (615 million dollars) will also be signed, the report said. Athens is seeking to attract investment from countries with massive sovereign wealth funds — such as China — in an effort to stimulate economic growth in its debt-laden economy. Greece’s abundant port facilities, the quality of its worldleading merchant fleet and its strategic location as a gateway
into the Balkans and Europe have drawn interest from Chinese global commercial giant Cosco. The Chinese company last year signed with Greece a 35-year concession to expand the two main container terminals at the main Greek port of Piraeus for a guaranteed premium of 3.4 billion euros. “Cosco has a major plan to build the port of Piraeus into the greatest container hub in the Eastern Mediterranean area, and we will create a logistics centre in Piraeus,” Cosco chief executive Wei Jiafu told reporters last month. Japan may quit whaling commission if ban stays put Associated Press Writer
TOKYO – Japan is considering withdrawing from the International Whaling Commission if no progress is made toward easing an international ban on commercial whaling, its fisheries minister said Tuesday. The IWC — the international body that regulates whaling — will gather for its annual meeting next week in Agadir, Morocco. The meeting is expected to seek a compromise between pro- and antiwhaling countries, which may include allowing commercial whaling on a limited scale. A moratorium has been in place for 25 years, but countries such as Japan, Norway and Iceland hunt whales under a variety of exceptions to the ban. An IWC proposal
was circulated in April to allow limited commercial hunts for 10 years. Japan has frequently threatened to pull out of the IWC in the past. Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Masahiko Yamada was asked Tuesday if Tokyo would quit the IWC if progress was not made toward easing the ban on commercial whaling. “I am considering various options,” Yamada said. “This is really the final stage, and we’re not sure
how things are going to turn out.” Anti-whaling states, including Australia and New Zealand, have called a proposed whaling quota system unacceptable and demanded an end to Japan’s hunt in Antarctic waters. Japan’s whaling program includes large-scale scientific expeditions to the Antarctic, while other whaling countries mostly stay along their coasts. Opponents call Japan’s scientific research hunts a cover for commercial whaling. The comments were the first by Yamada to reporters since assuming his post a week ago. He was one of several Cabinet ministers appointed by new Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan.
LONG BEACH, Miss. – Tracey Winspeare said her Canadian uncle warned her before she traveled to Mississippi: Oil is washing up on the beaches from a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico. He was wrong. Winspeare, who lives near Cambridge, England, sunbathed Monday on a clean stretch of white sand in Long Beach. Geography and water currents have spared the area — like all beaches in Mississippi — from the worst of the two-month-old spill. “It’s beautiful here. I love it,” Winspeare, a 23-year-old genealogist, said on a day with blue skies, a light breeze and a temperature approaching 95 degrees. Millions of gallons of oil have gushed into the Gulf since an oil rig exploded on April 20 and later sank about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast. Gooey gobs of it have soiled Louisiana’s delicate marshlands. In Alabama, rust-colored tar balls have washed ashore and officials have warned people not to swim some days on some beaches, even as tourist season should be gaining momentum. So far, Mississippi hasn’t dealt with such messes, largely because of the underwater DeSoto Canyon in the Gulf, which is south of the Florida Panhandle, said Don Johnson, an oceanographer at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory.
The ruptured BP oil well is along the upper slope of the continental shelf, and the DeSoto Canyon helps direct water currents from there eastward toward Alabama and Florida, Johnson said. During July, winds usually blow from the southsouthwest and that means oil in the Gulf will continue to move toward parts of the Florida Panhandle near Apalachicola, he said. During normal times — pretty much anytime there’s not a hurricane or other strong storm — Mississippi coastal waters remain relatively calm. “It’s like if you have a strong wind blowing and you stand in the corner,” Johnson said. “It’s just kind of forced away from the corner.” Mississippi has seen some signs of trouble. Strands of caramel-colored oil were discovered two weeks ago south of one of the barrier islands, Petit Bois island, which is near the Alabama line and which locals pronounce “Petty Boy.” About 140 dead turtles have been found since the spill, and Harrison County Emergency Management director Rupert Lacy said crews have collected a few gallons of tar balls or “tar pancakes” on the main beaches. Johnson said a common misperception is that Mississippi’s string of barrier islands are primarily what’s keeping oil off the state’s mainland coastline but really it’s the currents.

JOHANNESBURG – Defending champion Italy looked more like pretender than credible contender for a second straight World Cup title, and the flying form of the Netherlands never really got off the ground. The Italians, who came into the World Cup with questions about an aging squad, were held to a 1-1 draw by Paraguay in Group F in Cape Town. In fact, the Azzurri had to rally on Daniele De Rossi’s second-half goal to get the one point. The Dutch, who went unbeaten in qualifying with a potent offense, struggled to get going at Soccer City but still managed a 2-0 win over Denmark in Group E. In the other Group E match, Keisuke Honda scored to lead Japan over Cameroon 1-0 in Bloemfontein. Antolin Alcaraz gave Paraguay the lead at the Green Point Stadium with a header in the 39th minute of the rainy Group F match, and De Rossi equalized for Italy from close range in the 63rd. “The biggest regret is the result,” Italy coach Marcello Lippi said. “They only approached the goal once and they scored. We reacted well, but you’ve got to win games likes these.” Italy played the second half without goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who left the game with a sciatic nerve injury. “He had a back problem,” Lippi said. “I hope he’s back for the next game, but that will be up to the doctors.” Buffon said he will be ready for the next match. “It was a good result, though we can’t say we played really

JOHANNESBURG – A group of 36 young Dutch fans in orange miniskirts were detained for several hours at Soccer City stadium for wearing outfits designed by a Dutch beer company, a newspaper reported Tuesday. The dresses were sold with Bavaria Beer packs in the Netherlands in the run-up to the World Cup, but football governing body FIFA accused the young women of staging an ambush marketing campaign, The Star said. “We were sitting near the front, making a lot of noise, and the cameras kept focusing on us,” Barbara Kastein told the paper. “In the second half, about 40 stewards sur-
rounded us and forced us to leave the stadium,” she said. They were taken to a FIFA office where police quizzed them about the dresses and asked if they worked for Bavaria. More than three hours later, they were released and police said they would continue investigating, the paper said. FIFA said the women were “used by a large Dutch brewery as an instrument for an ambush marketing campaign”, although the dresses had no branding on them. Budweiser, an official sponsor, is the only beer company allowed to advertise within the stadiums. FIFA fiercely protects its marketing interests, which are a major cash spinner for the organisation.

Although Kevin Garnett and his teammates appreciate the suggestion, they know it’s easier shouted than done — particularly in the playoffs, and especially on the road. The Celtics will have to overcome their unimpressive record in closeout playoff games away from Boston to finish off the Lakers in Game 6 of the NBA finals on Tuesday night. For all their remarkable success over the past three seasons, including the 2008 title and another finals run this year, the Celtics have converted just one of their eight chances to finish a playoff series away from home. They’ve got two opportunities at Staples Center, which could be the fifth
building in which the Celtics have won a title at the expense of their longtime rivals — or the site of a remarkable Hollywood ending for the Lakers. If Los Angeles survives Tuesday, a champion will be crowned Thursday in Game 7. “They’re playing at home. Home is always where your heart is,” Garnett said. “With the severity of the game, it’s all-out on both ends for both teams. This will probably be the hardest game of the season, if not of the series, if not of everybody’s career, this game coming up.” Even after winning three of the series’ last four games, and even after compiling the NBA’s second-best road record in the regular season (26-15),
the Celtics can’t be lulled into thinking they’ve got the Lakers on the run. Although Boston narrowly won Game 2 at Staples Center on the strength of Ray Allen’s historic 3-point shooting binge and Rajon Rondo’s late-game poise, Boston knows the Lakers are 9-1 at home in the postseason, with everybody from Kobe Bryant to the Lakers’ bedraggled bench playing with much more passion and confidence. “The Lakers ... got homecourt advantage, but we’ve played the best all year on the road,” Boston coach Doc Rivers said. “We’re going to have to beat them at their best, because they’re going to be great there, and we can’t expect anything else.”

The problem forced her to miss the clay season including the French Open at Roland Garros but she is now hoping to fine-tune her grass court preparation for Wimbledon. “You have to step over the boundary and play without fear,” the reigning US Open champion said on Monday as she prepared for an opening match here against fellow Belgian Yanina Wickmayer. “I’ve had practise sets since coming here late Tuesday and training. Now I really want to play matches. They will help me get past the in-

Lorenzo prepares to go solo at Silverstone JORGE Lorenzo has set his sights on the podium at Silverstone as he prepares for his first MotoGP weekend with the full might of the FIAT Yamaha team trained solely on him. With Valentino Rossi beginning his recovery process from Italy, Lorenzo will be the championship-winning team’s single representative for the British Grand Prix, held at Silverstone for the first time in 24 years. Firmly established as the ‘man to beat’ for this year’s title now, Lorenzo is looking forward to his Silverstone debut as he bids to extend his current 25 point advantage over Dani Pedrosa. “After Mugello we arrive at Silverstone, a track that none of us know! I will do some laps with the scooter on Thursday; I don’t always do this but I think it’s very important because so far I’ve only seen the track on the PlayStation and it’s changed quite a lot. “My aim is once again to get on the podium, but I was disappointed after Mugello and I want to do a better race in England. I am happy with my lead in the standings but I want to keep improving and this weekend we will try to find some more traction for my M1.” In the meantime, the Spaniard will be kept busy by a series of off-track appearances, which included a trial of the Isle of Man TT course over the weekend and a chance to try his hand at the old British pastime of cricket… “Last week I went to the Isle of Man to see the TT, which was an incredible experience and I even rode a lap, but quite slowly! “On Wednesday I will go to Lord’s Cricket Ground for a press conference and it will be the first time I’ve seen cricket, because we don’t play in Spain. I think it will be interesting to discover this sport, and maybe even play! “Finally I want to send again my best wishes to Valentino, I am glad he is recovering well and we will miss him in these busy weeks.”

On the back of a similar result in Turkey two weeks earlier, Lewis Hamilton jumped to the head of the championship standings with team-mate Jenson Button just three points behind while McLaren now leads Red Bull in the constructors’ championship by 22 points after two maximum scores in a row. Speaking following the race in Montreal, team boss Martin Whitmarsh revealed that McLaren plans to bring in a new upgrade for the MP4-25 at Silverstone that should be worth up to a quarter of a second a lap to improve its outright speed relative to Red Bull, although he admitted that its Milton Keynesbased rival would also be fighting back strong after recent disappointments. “We won’t stand still,” Whitmarsh was quoted by Reuters. “We have a reasonably big upgrade that we are fighting to have for Silverstone, and if that
is there then I would be disappointed if it is not a much bigger step than that. “[Red Bull] are going to come back strongly and we have to make sure that we continue to develop the car. If we don’t develop the car at a quick-enough pace, then we will not win races and we will not win this championship.” Red Bull boss Christian Horner has already said he feels that McLaren will be the team to beat in the next race of the season at Valencia, and Whitmarsh admitted that the car should be strong in Spain. “We have to go to Valencia and try to capitalise on the form we have at the moment with the type of the circuit that Valencia is, and then make sure that we secure a decent step forward at Silverstone that helps us maintain the pace,” he said. “If we don’t, if we fail to develop the car, we will get overhauled and beaten by more than just Red Bull.”
