Bali News Fake Money Distributor Sentenced 5 Years Denpasar (Bali Post)-
Accused Ramlan (39) suspected to have distributed fake money was sentenced for 5 years in a trial at Denpasar District Court last Tuesday (13/7). At a separate trial, other 4 accused Eko Adi Putra, Suswandi, Ketut Sudiarta and Supriyono also sentenced the same. Judge Dewa Made Wenten, SH stated that the accused is officially verified and have committed crime in distributing fake money as said at Criminal Code section 245. Judge did not see any reasons denying the accused actions and so this punishment should be given. Meanwhile evidence 33 pieces of fake paper money IDR 100 thousand, a cell phone and a green handkerchief are taken to be destroyed. This decision given by the judge is the same as what public prosecutor AA Satya Markendya, SH demanded. When the judge stated the decision, accused seemed calm and then started to get nervous as it approaches the final decision. Accused then stated his opinion on the decision. Judge thinks the statements by the witnesses who were I Putu Mudayasa, I Dewa Gede Brahmantha, Suswandi alias Timbul, I
Nyoman Sudiarta, Supriono alias Pujel, all are similar so it proves the accused fault. From the witnesses’ statements it was revealed the accused committed crime on Tuesday 2nd March 2010 at Pramata Street, Banjar Tengkulung, Tanjung Benoa Village, South Kuta, Badung. The accused was captured following Eko Adi Putra’s capture the day before. At that time Eko Adi Putra admitted to have received the fake money from Suswandi alias Timbul by buying it at Nusa Dua. Police then find and capture Suswandi and confiscated 10 pieces of fake IDR 100 thousand. From Suswandi’s confession, he also gave the 200 pieces of fake money to accused Ramlan. That money was then given to I Ketut Sudiarta as much as 100 pieces and the rest saved by the accused which then 7 pieces given to Supriyono. (015)

The ongoing incidents due to the free 3 kg gas tube which also took lives at some areas are now taken firm measures by Karangasem. To look over the condition of the distribution in here, Karangasem Industry and Marketing Agency then did an inspection to several Elpiji dealers last Tuesday (13/7). Officials found some of them don’t have an official SNI label and also replaced with an easy off plastic seal. Other cases in the area also show gas tubes without its rubber seals. Head of the Agency Ni Made Puspa Kumari, who led the inspection, stated that these are not safe and can cause leakage and explosion. For that she asked distributors or suppliers and Pertamina to be careful with those conditions. The inspection was done at Karangsokong and other areas. Puspa Kusmari also stated, besides looking over they also give guidance by giving suggestions. During transporting it, make sure that it was not slammed so it won’t
be damaged or dented which can easily cause leakage, “We also asked Pertamina to be selective on the tubes going to be used or to be filled. If there’s a damaged or dented one, it’s better to be changed so it won’t put the consumers to danger.” So far there is no report that it exploded and caused casualties, but she hoped that the suppliers and consumers to be extra careful. “Besides leakage, it can also be caused by damage on the tube’s regulator,” she added. People are getting help of this gas tube as a conversion from kerosene to elpiji yet many complained the low quality of its stove and pipe as its damaged quickly and rusty when it’s not even used yet. Because of fear going to explode and putting them in danger, residents don’t want to use it and chose to handover the gas tube with its stove which cost around IDR 100 thousand each. As a result, after being distributed to the villages from the city, lately the tubes were taken back to the city. (013)

Landslide Caused Residents Houses Crushed Negara, DenPost
Heavy rain passing by Jembrana last Monday (12/7) caused two residents houses at Pancaseming, Batuagung Village, Jembrana Sub District and Dusun Sekar Kejula, Yehembang Kauh, crushed due to swept by mud. Houses are owned by Nengah Aryana (35), resident of tempek Karya Bakti, Pancaseming and Ketut Sadia (55) at Sekar Kejula Kelod, Yehembang Kauh Village, Mendoyo. Aryana’s house was under water mixed by mud coming from a cliff at the north of the house. Because of the incident a building with farming equipments and three shrines crushed. The kitchen part at the south also fractured. Besides that, two motorbikes owned by Aryana and his sibling Kayan Wardana (30) swept by the flash flood. The Supra X and Yamaha Crypton motorbikes were definitely gone swept by Tukad Panca Gede river flow. Aryana stated the incident happened so fast after the rain at 1 pm wita. The mud also went into the house and very thick. The muds were then cleaned up by the locals as well. According to him the house with three units’ buildings is lived by eight people of two families.
This worse condition also felt by Ketut Sadia. The house’s wall and roof at the north are also crushed by landslide. When it happened, Sadia was resting after getting food for the goats. “My wife called me to go to the kitchen. All of a sudden a thundery sound and wind came completed with mud. As I went outside, my house’s wall has been holed,” Sadia explained. As it happened, he was scared there’ll be a following one and so they are staying at their relative’s house for the while. Some officials from Mendoyo sub district and Jembrana Vice Regent, I Putu Artha, came to the location to see the damage. Besides Sadia’s house, it also crashed a resident’s garden. Road accesses are also covered by soil and stone which is still not cleaned up until now. Meanwhile at Pancaseming, besides houses, the village officials also reported some husbandry and plat Decker also sunk by the river. The roads in the tempek also closed by flash flood with landslide following it Monday afternoon and actually there are around 30 families living down from the forest. Archeological protection in Bali and the role of the society Archeological protection through maintenance, preservation and conservation, even through reconstruction as well, has turned to be an international problem not only today, but actually in the future. Such matters were indicated by the activities of UNESCO as an international institution, who concerned with the most important of world cultural heritage e.g. archeological remains. UNESCO have done a lot of excellent work, which need a reasonable budgets, expert, equipment etc. and the best example is the safeguarding of Brobudur temple. As the UNESCO member, our governments are concerned and responsible to protect our monuments for our national interest, such as Brobudur temple. Based on the development of archaeological studies and the related studies especially in field of archaeological protection, now such problems is a technical matter and besed on scientific consideration. Facing such problem , Indonesian government have done a number of works e.g the safeguarding of borobudur tample {in cooperation with {UNESCO}, Prambanan tample ,Demak mosque, and other tamples in Bali namely Pura Besakih ,Pura Mengening , Pura Pegulingan , Pura Taman Sari etc. In this case, our government as one of the ASEAN countries have carried out a coordinate programmers through SPAFA (Sub project of archaeology and fine art) to find out the effective ways and means dealing with the problems of archaeological protection . Discussing the archaeological protection in Bali, it should be remembered that Bali, even a very small island, but has a lot of archaeological monuments, which most of them belonged to living monuments. Among them are a number of Hindu tample, spreated nearly in the whole island, as well as Hindu stastues , inscription etc. As the holy monuments for Balinese society, so the Balinese have the responsibility to take care their monuments as their religious function Offi-
cially, archaeological protection in Bali is done by Bali Office for Preservation of archaeological and Historical Heritage (Kantor Bali Suaka pening-gelang Sejarah dan Purbakala Bali) in coordialnation and corporation with the local government and local people as well. This office have done a lot of archaeological reconstruction, but not yet covered the whole of them, because of the limited budgets etc. In case of protecting the archaeological monuments in Bali, Bali Office for Preservation of archaeological and Historical Heritage has given a technical guidance to the local people for reconstructing their monuments and financial support as well. As the governments have a very limited budget for these works, and as the owner of the living monuments, so the Balinese people have their religious tasks and responsibility to protect sacred monuments. In Bali generally each village have three village temples named Pura Kyayangan Tiga e.g Pura Puseh,Pura Desa (sometime combined with Pura Bale Agung ) and Pura dalem. Among them are belonged to archaeological monuments and frequently in these temple a number of archaeological monuments are preserved such as statues, inscription etc. It is important to note here that the
unity of the Balinese society is tightly bounded by the village temples and social organization. Based on religious reasons, actuality Balinese society has a strong spirit to keep their monuments in a well condition as holy monuments. Since a very long time the Balinese people have maintained and restored their monuments in a very traditional ways, based on their own religious will and spirit, and for this purpose they collected the materials, even reasonable money from the village members. The village members, especially the skilled members (Balinese, undagi) did the restoration and led by the village leader, without any payment (Balinese, ngayah). This mutual model of works named gotong royong is one of the Indonesian spirits, which has been developed since the early time until today. It is a remarkable fact since the early time Balinese people have done the archeological protection in their traditional ways, which really should be regarded as a community based conservation. The most important meaning of these facts is the Balinese have done their religious task, which still continued from one generation to next generation and still retained until today.(BTN)
Trial of murder case to a couple
Prosecutor sues Fahrun 20 years and reveals involvement of Arief Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Allegation on the involvement of Arief Sugiarto in the murder to couple Sugianto Halim—Fenny Maria was revealed again in the trial of the indictment reading for defendant Fahrudin alias Fahrun, in Denpasar District Court, last Tuesday (Jul 13). In the indictment, prosecutors called convincingly the role of perpetrator played by AS. Fahrun was prosecuted twenty years’ imprisonment, and stated to have been guilty in premeditated murder crime conducted jointly as stipulated in article 340 of the Penal Code in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) point 1 of the Penal Code and article 362 of the Penal Code concerning with the theft. Public prosecutor mentioned Arif Sugiarto got involved in the murder against the boss of Sejahtera shoe store. It could be seen from the legal facts delivered by public pros-
ecutor. From the defendant’s testimony in harmony with that of Wayan Agus it was true the murder was carried out by three of them and if linked with the information of Arif Sugiarto claiming to have business disputes with Sugianto Halim, it could be obtained an indication the murder was motivated by business disputes committed by the defendant, Wayan Agus Indriyanto and Arief Sugiarto. Not only that, the prosecutor also mentioned Arief Sugiarto to have determined the times when to meet and perform the murder, namely on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at the Sejahtera shoe store located at Jalan Wahidin No. 47 B Denpasar. Testimony of defendant was considered to have been appropriate with the testimony of witness Wayan Agus Indriyanto to prove that the murder was indeed premeditated as well as indicated the involvement of Arief
Sugiarto. Meanwhile, the defendant looked a bit shocked when hearing the indictment of prosecutor. After the hearing, the legal adviser of the defendant, Haposan Sihombing, immediately approached the defendant. Haposan suggested his client to be patient and did not compare with the punishment to his colleague Wayan Agus I. Agus was sentenced for 10 years’ imprisonment because he was still underage. According to stipulation, underage children indeed got a half of the sentence sued by the article. As reported previously, the defendant was ready to be taken by Arief Sugiarto for killing the victim because the defendant was promised a sum of money as wages to commit the assassination, whereas the defendant had the time or the opportunity not to carry out the assassination ordered by Arief Sugiarto. Stop destroying Gelgel as former kingdom center Semarapura (Bali Post)—
From the journey of Gelgel as the center of the kingdom (in its age), definitely many things could be taken as reference to realize the progress of Klungkung in the future. Values such as life tolerance, the spirit of mutual assistance, cycle of the economy through crafts and others are very important to be resurrected. Gelgel should not only be seen in terms of the rapid growth of development that even threats the popularity of the former center of the kingdom and turns it into a slum area, prone to security problems and others. It is in harmony with the concerns exposed by Chief of Gelgel Village, Nengah Soma, on the occasion of a working meeting of Klungkung Regency Government with technical consultants discussing about the arrangement plans and revitalization of the downtown area, last Monday (Jul 12). So, what should be done? Cok Bagus Oka, a figure of Klungkung Royal Palace, mentioned that Gelgel Village was very worthy introducing to the world. The values existing since Gelgel had became the hub of kingdom administration was important to be raised again. For example, interfaith tolerance where since ancient times the Hindus and Muslims had coexisted peacefully and side by side. Anyone was given a space to live his life in Bali. If they felt welcomed, they practically had the same obligation to maintain and build Bali. Similarly, the spirit of mutual assistance was excellent. “It is such attitudes that should be revived,” pointed out Cok Bagus. Likewise, handicraft sector of Gelgel retains a very popular woven craft. Reviving Gelgel as former royal center, he said, did not necessarily mean to restore the kingdom era in Klungkung. It was only required to discover the positive values to be used as reference in building Klungkung in years to come. The question then, he said, whether Klungkung Regency and the community, particularly Gelgel community, had a clear vision to maintain it. Then, what endeavor to be taken? “If having a clear vision towards such purpose, government certainly might not expose it just in discourse of nonsense anyway. But it should work and move harder. Likewise, sitting together with relevant parties to discuss about the matters is considered important,” he asserted. It was also required to perform any structuring of the en-
vironment, house building style (home, entrance), the public mindset, crafting and the economy. As a member of royal family, Cok Bagus personally declared that values contained in Gelgel were important to be resurrected as a reference for government in running the administration in the future. It did not necessarily mean that it would bring back Klungkung into the system of monarchy, but only used it as paragon for the sake of progress. He added, at the moment the remaining royal relics of Gelgel Kingdom was the existence of basic temple. Government should have a commitment to keep it by made the area free from any constructions within a radius of several meters. Head of Klungkung Agency for Regional Development, A.A. Ngurah Agung claimed to agree with Cok Bagus. To generate what should be in Gelgel had been under progress at this time. By establishing cooperation with a consultant Klungkung Regency was making a study about it. Gelgel community strongly felt that the effect of bypass road even could change the conditions of Gelgel quickly. If previously stipulated as green belt, it could possibly be raided by buildings. Moreover, on other occasions, Soma said 30 percent of agricultural land at Gelgel had undergone a conversion of function. They included the land used for the road construction. Billboard linking Obama, Hitler draws complaints AP
DES MOINES, Iowa – A billboard created by an Iowa tea party group that compares President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Lenin is drawing sharp criticism — even from fellow tea party activists who have condemned it as offensive and a waste of money. The North Iowa Tea Party began displaying the billboard in downtown Mason City last week. The sign shows large photographs of Obama, Nazi leader Hitler and communist leader Lenin beneath the labels “Democrat Socialism,” “National Socialism,” and “Marxist Socialism.” Beneath the photos is the phrase, “Radical leaders prey on the fearful & naive.” The co-founder of the roughly 200-person group said the billboard was intended to send an antisocialist message. But Bob Johnson admitted Tuesday that the message may have gotten lost amid the images of fascist and communist leaders. “The purpose of the billboard was to draw attention to the socialism. It seems to have been lost in the visuals,” Johnson said. “The pictures overwhelmed the mes-
sage. The message is socialism.” He said he didn’t know of any plans to remove the sign. But others in the tea party movement criticized the sign. “That’s just a waste of money, time, resources and it’s not going to further our cause,” said Shelby Blakely, a leaders of the Tea Party Patriots, a national group. “It’s not going to help our cause. It’s going to make people think that the tea party is full of a bunch of rightwing fringe people, and that’s not true.” Blakely also expressed outrage at linking Obama to Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany who oversaw the killing of 6 million Jews and whose invasions of neighboring countries led to World War II. “When you compare Obama to Hitler, that to me does a disservice to the Jews who both survived and died in the Holocaust and to the Germans who lived under Nazi regime rule,” Blakely said. John White, an Iowa coordinator of the Tea Party Patriots, said that he can understand the North Iowa group’s perception that Obama is “Hitler-esque,” but he thinks the billboard is offensive and unproductive. White said that he planned to discuss the matter with national tea party officials.

East Timorese lawmakers voted on Monday to reject Gillard’s proposal, and several government and opposition leaders have expressed strong objections. have not ruled out the idea, and Gillard says she is determined to win their approval for a plan that could be key to her fortunes in upcoming elections. Opposition within Gusmao’s government appears to be growing, however, with Carrascalao echoing fellow Deputy Prime Minister Jose Luis Guterres’s earlier rejection last week. “My personal opinion is that I am against the proposal as our people have many problems to be solved and that’s enough for us. Nigerian Islamist leader threatens US: monitors AFP
LAGOS (AFP) – A Nigerian Islamist leader believed killed in an uprising nearly a year ago has threatened the United States and paid tribute to Al-Qaeda in Iraq in a new message, a monitoring group said Wednesday. The message attributed to the Islamist sect leader was posted on a website on Sunday — the same day attacks in Uganda targeting World Cup fans killed dozens, though there was no apparent link between the two. In the message posted on the Ansar al-Mujahideen jihadist forum, Abubakar Shekau, formerly second in command of the sect, mourns slain top Islamic State of Iraq officials, SITE said. “I send this message of condolence on behalf of my mujahideen brothers in some African territories called Nigeria to the mujahideen ...in general and to the soldiers of Allah in the Islamic
State of Iraq in particular,” he said in the message. Shekau, believed to have been killed during last year’s rebellion in the northern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, warned the United States. “Infidels, hypocrites and apostates: Do not think jihad is over. Rather jihad has just begun, ...America, die with your fury,” he said. Shekau’s message comes just weeks before the first anniversary of the uprising his group, Boko Haram, launched in a bid to establish an Islamist state. A picture of Shekau, brandishing a rifle, appeared with the message.
Authorities had thought Shekau was dead, but videos clips of him threatening to avenge the deaths of hundreds of militants killed in the July 2009 clashes with security forces emerged in northern Nigeria in April. At least 700 people, most of them sect members, were killed during the insurrection that was put down by Nigerian security forces in less than a week of fierce street battles. Shekau’s message was for Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Abu Hamza alMuhajir. It was addressed to “leaders of al-Qaeda and its affiliated groups in Algeria, Iraq, Somalia and Yemen”, said SITE.

LONDON – A redheaded sleeper agent who became the most high-profile figure in the U.S.-Russia spy case has had her British citizenship revoked, the government announced Tuesday. Anna Chapman, 28, was among 10 suspects who pleaded guilty in New York last week to a charge of procuring information for a foreign government. The undercover agents were sent to Russia from the United States on Friday in a swap for four Russians accused of spying for the West.
Chapman, whose sultry photos gleaned from Facebook and other social-networking sites made her a tabloid sensation, previously lived in Britain and held both a U.K. passport and British citizenship following a 2002 marriage to a British man, Alex Chapman. The couple divorced in 2006, and Chapman — a Russian also known as Anya Kushchenko — later moved to New York, where she appeared to work in real estate. Her page on online networking site LinkedIn listed her as the chief executive officer of
PropertyFinder Ltd., which maintained a website featuring real estate listings in Moscow, Spain, Bulgaria and other countries. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Farbiarz said that behind the facade she was a “sophisticated agent of Russia.” Chapman’s American lawyer had said she hoped to return to Britain. But the Home Office said Tuesday that Chapman’s citizenship and passport have been revoked. She is likely also to be formally excluded from Britain, so she cannot travel to the country at all.

JAKARTA - The government has pledged to review the regulation on the electricity price hike for the industrial sector, Industry Minister MS Hidayat said. “At today’s meeting, the minister wished the new regulation on the industrial sector’s basic electricity tariffs to be announced this week,” he said here Wednesday. The meeting was chaired by Coordinating Minister for Economy Hatta Radjasa. JAKARTA - The Australian government has nominated Greg Moriarty as Australia’s Ambassador to Indonesia, to replace Bill Farmer who has been ambassador since November 2005. “As is the case with all foreign ambassadors in Indonesia, Mr Moriarty’s appointment will be subject to agreement from the Government of Indonesia. This process includes consideration by Indonesia’s Parliament,” Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith said in a press statement published on the Australian embassy’s official website here Wednesday. The relationship between Australia and Indonesia is stronger than ever, he said. “Ours is a partnership between two open and robust democracies,

PREPARATION: Bring 3 liters (12 cups) of lightly salted water to boil in a stockpot. Add knuckles, reduce heat and simmer for approximately 45 minutes until meat is three quarter cooked. Heat oil in heavy saucepan. Add all ingredients except chicken stock and sauté for about 2 minutes until spices change color. Pour chicken stock into saucepan, mix well and bring to the boil. Add cooked knuckles, mix well, bring back to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes or until knuckles are completely cooked.

NEW DELHI - India’s double-digit inflation edged higher in June, touching an annual rate of 10.55 percent, official data showed Wednesday, stoking pressure for another interest rate hike this month. The inflation increase, which comes ahead of the central bank’s quarterly policy meeting on July 27, was mainly due to a rise late last month in fuel costs as well as an increase in food prices, the data showed. The wholesale price index, India’s main cost-of-living measure, rose to 10.55 percent from a year earlier after a 10.16 percent increase in May. High inflation is a lightning rod for political unhappiness in the country, where hundreds of millions of people live below the poverty line. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Economic Advisory Council warned Tuesday the central Reserve Bank of India (RBI) might tighten monetary policy further due to the persistent rise in prices and capacity constraints in factory output. “If inflation level persists at doubledigit levels... some action on the demand side is needed and some action on the part of RBI is required” until
more industrial capacity comes on stream, council chairman C. Rangarajan said. Earlier this week, data showed India’s industrial output decelerated sharply to 11.5 percent in May, its weakest pace in seven months, as factories ran into capacity constraints after months of breakneck expansion. The central bank has raised rates three times since March, including twice this month. April’s inflation reading was revised higher to 11.23 percent — a 19-month peak, the data showed. But the central bank expects inflation to soften to 5.5 percent by the end of the financial year to March 2011, helped by expected plentiful monsoon rains, which should increase harvests and ease food prices. The opposition has blamed Singh’s Congress-led government for failing to keep a check on prices since it was returned to power in elections last year.

It was the latest vote of confidence in the economic outlook by monetary policymakers in Asia, coming on the heels of rate hikes in Taiwan, India, Malaysia and South Korea. “The economy should continue to grow,” the Bank of Thailand said in a statement explaining its decision to hike the rate by 25 basis points to 1.5 percent. “The impact of the domestic political situation on the Thai economy in the second quarter proved to be limited,” it said, following the end in May of two months of mass opposition protests. “The tourism industry has shown signs of a quick recovery while con-
sumption and production were little affected.” Previously the Bank of Thailand had held its benchmark rate steady for more than a year, after a series of cuts to shield the economy from the fallout of the global financial crisis. The last time it raised rates was in August 2008. The street protests by the antigovernment “Red Shirts” paralysed parts of Bangkok and descended into several outbreaks of violence that left 90 people dead and nearly 1,900 injured, ending in a bloody army crackdown. The demonstrations forced several major malls and upscale hotels to close temporarily and led to a steep fall in the number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand. But overall exports have remained strong, hitting the highest level in almost two years in May and reviving confidence in the economy, which grew at a double-digit year-on-year pace in the first quarter of 2010.

SINGAPORE - Singapore looks set to become the world’s fastest-growing economy in 2010 after the government upgraded its forecast to a blistering 13 to 15 percent annual expansion, economists said Wednesday. The new estimate, up sharply from an earlier prediction of 7.0 to 9.0 percent, outstrips forecasts of around 10 percent growth in regional powerhouse China and comes despite lingering worries over the US and European economies. “Singapore will be the strongest-growing economy in Asia for the year and probably in the world,” said Song Seng Wun, a Singapore-based regional economist with CIMB Research. He said the new growth forecast was “realistic” despite a projected slowdown in the second half because gross domestic product (GDP) expansion in the first six months of the year was likely to be 18 percent. Asia’s other export-oriented economies are also expected to post healthy increases this year, but Singapore has other growth drivers including its tourism and financial services industry, he told AFP. Singapore opened two huge casino resorts this year that have proved a popular draw. David Cohen, a regional economist with research house Action Economics, said Singapore will “probably come on top of the charts worldwide”. Cohen, however, said this should be seen in the context of Singapore’s GDP contraction of 1.3 percent last year due to the global economic crisis, while China’s GDP grew at around 9.0 percent in 2009. Strong second-quarter GDP figures “reinforce the view that fears from the eurozone crisis may be exaggerated,” DBS Bank said in a note. As Singapore is the “most sensitive to headwinds in the global economy, this is good news for investors looking to put on risk again,” DBS added. “Hence, sentiment should remain constructive, not only for the Singapore dollar, but also other Asia ex-Japan currencies and commodity currencies linked to a positive growth outlook.”
Robust demand for Singapore’s manufactured exports, particularly biomedical products and semiconductors, resulted in the sharp upgrade for the tradedriven island’s GDP growth forecast. Growth in the first quarter was 16.9 percent from a year ago, the Ministry of Trade and Industry said, while second quarter expansion is estimated at 19.3 percent. In a separate statement the trade promotion body International Enterprise (IE) Singapore said non-oil domestic exports — a barometer of the health of the economy — jumped 29 percent in June from a year ago, faster than the 24 percent figure the month before. Electronics exports, including computer chips, climbed 44 percent in June, after rising 39 percent in May. Non-electronics shipments, among them pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and specialised machinery, were up 21 percent in June, compared with the 16 percent rise the month before, IE Singapore said. The country’s exports are now expected to advance by between 17 and 19 percent this year, up from the previous forecast of 15 to 17 percent. It cited strong trade with Asian economies led by China as a key factor for the upgrade of the export forecasts. The trade body noted China’s surging imports, with Beijing’s trading partners expected to benefit from rising demand from Chinese consumers. The trade ministry said growth would moderate in the second half of the year due to problems in two key markets for Singapore’s exports — the United States and the European Union. “In the US, there are now signs of a slowdown in the labour market following the recovery earlier in the year. This has affected consumer confidence. In the EU, domestic demand remains depressed as concerns over the sovereign debt crisis persist.” Cohen said however that he does not see the global economy slipping into another recession. “So the Singapore government’s projection for full-year growth seems within reach,” he told AFP.

While the boozy crowd readied itself for four minutes of awkward singing, the woman — “Karen” — suddenly belted out exquisite, pitch-perfect renditions of the Jewel songs “Who Will Save Your Soul” and “Foolish Games.” Astonished crowd members picked their jaws off the floor and cheered wildly. One person was heard comparing Karen to “an American Susan Boyle.” Unbeknownst to them, they had been victims of “undercover karaoke.” Karen really was Jewel, and the proceedings had been filmed by FunnyOrDie.com, the comedy video website co-founded by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. In a press release, the MoD described the Taranis as “a prototype unmanned combat aircraft of the future.” It is built to carry out intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions while its crew stays safely on the ground and can control the aircraft from anywhere in the world. The unmanned fighter jet can also carry bombs and missiles and, if the trials prove successful, the MoD said it should “ultimately be capable of striking targets at long range, even in another continent.” The current generation of propellerdriven drones — such as the Predator and Reaper — are capable of carrying missiles, but these unmanned planes can only be used in areas where the military has air dominance, such as Iraq and Afghanistan. UN: HIV among young people going down in Africa Associated Press Writer
LONDON – The number of young people infected with HIV in Africa is falling in 16 of the 25 countries hardest hit by the virus, according to a new report by a U.N. agency. The number of young people infected with HIV dropped by at least 25 percent in a dozen countries, the U.N. AIDS report said. In Kenya, for instance, the infection rate among people aged 15 to 24 fell from about 14 percent in 2000 to 5.4 percent in urban areas. The drop in HIV rates coincided with a change in sexual behavior, like having fewer sexual partners or increased condom use, UNAIDS said. But the agency could not say the drop was because of recent U.N. policies, which mainly have focused on buying AIDS drugs rather than preventing infections. Prevention will remain a key investment for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, its coleader, Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates, said Tuesday. He spoke in a conference call with reporters to preview comments he’ll make at next
week’s International AIDS Conference in Vienna. Gates repeatedly cited circumcision to reduce the spread of HIV as an area the foundation had “got out in front of” and would continue to support. Economic woes have limited how much money countries can spend on AIDS, so more must be done to trim administrative costs and make delivering treatment as efficient as possible, Gates said. “We’ve hit some limits and we’re going to have to get as much as we can out of the funding that exists,” he said. The Seattle-based foundation has given more than $2.2 billion to fight HIV around the world, plus $650 million to support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. The UNAIDS research provides further evidence the AIDS outbreak peaked more than a decade ago and that the disease is on the decline. In a report last year, the agency said the number of people infected with HIV had remained unchanged — at about 33 million — for the last two years. The new report is based on population surveys and mathematical modeling, and comes with a significant margin of error.

Guardiola extends contract with Barcelona Agence France Presse
MADRID – Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola, who has led the club to seven trophies in two seasons, will sign a one-year contract extension on Wednesday, the Spanish champions revealed. “The expected announcement of Guardiola?s continued presence on the bench is a reality,” said the club in a statement posted on their website. Guardiola’s contract expired on June 30 but the 39-year-old agreed in January to extend it by one season while Joan Laporta was still the president of the club.
Barcelona’s new president, Sandro Rosell, said shortly after he was elected on June 13 that he would try to get Guardiola to sign a sixyear contract extension. The lack of a written contract fuelled media speculation at the end of last season that the coach could leave the Catalan giants. Guardiola, a former Barcelona midfielder, took charge of the club in June 2008 following a spell as boss of their B team. Under his watch Barcelona won two successive La Liga crowns, in 2009 and 2010, as well as the 2009 Champions League.

LONDON – World Cup final referee Howard Webb has arrived home in England insisting he had done a tough job in difficult circumstances to the best of his ability. The official has come in for criticism from some quarters, notably from some Dutch players, over his handling of Sunday’s final, one of the dirtiest in the history of the World Cup. He handed out a record 14 yellow cards and sent off Holland’s Everton defender John Heitinga during Spain’s fractious 1-0 win. The Yorkshireman arrived home on Tuesday from South Africa with his assistants Darren Cann and Michael Mullarkey to a barrage of media interest in their performance at Soccer City in Johannesburg. In a statement released through the Premier League he said: “Whatever the match, you always hope that the officials won’t need to be heavily involved. However, we had to raise our profile in order to keep control. “We don’t feel that we had much choice except to manage the game in the way we did. We came away feeling satisfied that we’d done a tough job in difficult circumstances to the best of our abilities. “It was an extremely challenging match to handle, but it would have been so for any referee. It is one of the toughest games we will ever be involved in and we feel that we worked hard to keep the focus on the football as much as possible.” The Dutch players have been widely criticised for their behaviour during the final, during which Bert van Marwijk’s side committed a rash of heavy-handed challenges, including by former Holland logend Johann Cruyff. Holland were fortunate not to lose midfielder Nigel de Jong to a straight red card in the first half for a high challenge on Xabi Alonso. But, despite Webb’s leniency on that occasion, his performance nevertheless incensed the Dutch, and he was confronted by several players after the final whistle. “From early on in the match we had to make decisions that were clear yellow cards,” Webb continued. “We tried to apply some common sense officiating given the magnitude of the occasion for both sides advising players early on for some of their tackling, sending players away when they were surrounding the officials, and speaking to their senior colleagues to try to calm them down.”
Despite the furore that has followed Sunday’s final, Webb insists he has come away from South Africa harbouring “amazing memories”. “It was a marvellous honour to have been selected for the tournament and we had a wonderful six weeks in South Africa,” he said. “The people made us feel really welcome and we’ve hugely enjoyed the experience of being involved in such an incredible and unique event. We left the 2010 World Cup with amazing memories.” “We have been overwhelmed by the support of the public, the media, friends, colleagues, players and managers before and after the final. “It was a massive honour and a privilege to take charge of the World Cup final. It is something every referee dreams of and to fulfil that dream was a remarkable feeling.”

SAINT-JEAN-DE-MAURIENNE – For some French teams on the Tour de France, it has been a comparatively disastrous campaign so far. But at the halfway stage and on the national holiday of Bastille Day, the likes of Cofidis, Francaise des Jeux and Bbox-Bouygues have the perfect chance to make amends. After two hard days in the high mountains trimmed the yellow jersey field in brutal fashion, the battle for the race’s top prize should take a back seat until the resumption of hostilities in the Pyrenees on Sunday. The 179km 10th stage from Chambery to Gap Wednesday will give the yellow jersey challengers a chance to rest, and the French a chance to make up for their mediocre showing so far. The stage starts off easily enough, but with the difficult Cote de Laffrey — a 7km long category one-rated climb with an average gradient of nine percent — rising up at the 70km mark, breakaways are a certainty. Early attacks will have a good chance of going all the way, especially as the rest of the stage is undulating and features the ascent of the Col de Noyer, a category two-rated 7.4km-long climb at the 138km mark. From the summit it’s another 34km to the finish line in Gap, and Lance Armstrong in particular will have reason to look back with fondness at one
of the more bizarre highlights of his career. It was on the Rochette descent leading to the finish in Gap that the American dramatically took a diversion through a field after Spanish rival Joseba Beloki crashed in front of him as his tyre came of his wheel rim on the melting tarmac. As Armstrong emerged unscathed to global applause for his quick-thinking and versatile bike handling, Beloki was never the same rider after the injuries he sustained. Cofidis meanwhile admit it’s time for them to play a lead role in the race. Having watched Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel claim two stage victories for his Belgian team Quick Step, they want their share of the pie. “We’ve had opportunities, but we haven’t been daring enough so far,” lamented Cofidis team manager Eric Boyer. “We know that none of the French riders here can realistically aim for a place in the top 10 (overall), so we have to aim for the stages.”

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – The Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to send power forward Al Jefferson to the Utah Jazz for center Kosta Koufos and two future NBA first-round draft picks, both teams said Tuesday. Timberwolves president David Kahn said the first-round picks and the added flexibility under the salary cap made the trade make sense. Jefferson averaged 17.1 points and 9.3 rebounds last season, his first campaign after major knee injury in February 2009. In Utah he will help fill the void left from Carlos Boozer’s departure to Chicago. Jefferson came to Minnesota in 2007 as the key figure in the blockbuster deal that sent Kevin Garnett to Boston. He averaged 23.1 points and 11 rebounds in the 50 games before he was injured in 2009. For Minnesota, Jefferson became expendable because his low-post game, while effective offensively, doesn’t mesh well with the speedier style coach Kurt Rambis hopes to cultivate. “With Kevin Love and Michael Beasley on the team, there wouldn’t have been enough playing time for everybody to showcase Al,” Timberwolves president David Kahn. He should fit right in in Utah. “We are happy to acquire a young power player who has developed into one of the best low-post scorers in the league,” Jazz GM Kevin O’Connor said. “We gave up significant assets to obtain Al and we look forward to watching him progress with our team.”

He rebuilt the New York Yankees dynasty, ushering in the era of multimillion-dollar salaries and accepting nothing less in return than World Series championships. He fired managers. Rehired them. And fired them again. He butted heads with commissioners and fellow owners, insulted his players and dominated tabloid headlines — even upstaging the All-Star game on the day of his death. George Michael Steinbrenner III, who both inspired and terrorized the Yankees in more than three decades as owner, died Tuesday of a heart attack at age 80. “He was and always will be as much of a New York Yankee as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford and all of the other Yankee legends,” baseball commissioner Bud Selig said.
Once reviled by fans for his overbearing and tempestuous nature, Steinbrenner mellowed in his final decade and became beloved by employees and rivals alike for his success. Steinbrenner was taken from his home to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and died about 6:30 a.m, a person close to the owner told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed those details. “George was a fierce competitor who was the perfect fit for the city that never sleeps — colorful, dynamic and always reaching for the stars,” former President Bill Clinton said. Yankees captain Derek Jeter added: “He expected perfection.” In 37 1/2 years as owner, Steinbrenner whipped a moribund $10 million team into a $1.6 billion colossus that became the model of a modern franchise, one with its own TV network and ballpark food business.

“We have a two-step F-duct coming,” Boullier said. “It depends on the schedule, Budapest is a high downforce track so we don’t need to have it for that. Maybe we’ll get it before, or very likely right after.” Chief race engineer Alan Permane defended the team’s decision to delay its F-duct development much longer than its rivals. “We’ve concentrated on other bits and bobs and put an awful lot of downforce on the car, so I still think it was the right strategic decision to not do one immediately like the other teams did,” he said. But Permane admitted that Renault has fallen back behind Mercedes and believes the F-duct will help the team challenge for fourth place in the constructors’ championship.
“We should be fighting with the Ferraris and Mercedes,” he said. “Realistically we’re just at the back of that group at the moment. We had edged ahead of Mercedes but they’ve done a very good job - they were very quick at Silverstone and they’re ahead of us again now. “We need a little bit more and when we get our F-duct online that should help. That won’t be for another couple of races, but that’s all we’re missing compared to other people. “I think we’ve overperformed, honestly. We’ve made the most of the car and made the most of the opportunities presented to us in races, and I hope we can carry on doing that for the rest of the year. In the absence of winning, our goal is to beat Mercedes and be fourth quickest.”
