ited SLTPN 4 Bebandem, one of the school assisted by Australia. They were Brian Spicer, the head of Basic Education Program (BEP), Aaron O’Shanessy, a member of Bridge Program, and Farah Tomazin, a journalist. Brian said that through BEP program, Australia has built 2,000 schools throughout Indonesia and
one of them is SLTPN 4 Bebandem. The school received 1.3 billion rupiah of fund to built and develop it. Currently, the school has 330 students and adequate facilities. In addition to giving great fund, Australian government also help in increasing the education quality of education in Karangasem by giving the prepare training for teachers and
school staffs. Through Bridge program, the teachers and staff can increase their skills and knowledge by corresponding with the teachers from Australia and by teachers exchange program. I Ketut Latri, the head of SLTPN 4 Bebandem said that two teachers already being sent to Australia to study. “We wanted to increase the quality of education by increasing the quality of the teachers. We also give extra lesson of IT to the students in order to give them more knowledge,” he added.

Bali News JKBM Covers HIV/AIDS Patients Denpasar (Bali Post) –
Not long ago, the HIV/AIDS Care Forum, consisting of people living with HIV/AIDS, doctors, assistants, counselors in the field of AIDS prevention in Bali gathered to ask the policy of Bali Mandara Health Insurance (JKBM) that did not cover the patients with HIV/AIDS to be revised. “We do not reject JKBM but much appreciate to revise it. This program impressed to discriminate the sufferers of HIV whose current number almost reaches 4,000 people in Bali,” said Putu Utami, Director of Bali Foundation not long ago. Answering that regard, the Head of Bali Health Services, Nyoman Sutedja when contacted last Sunday (Jan 10) said that JKBM did not cover the patients with HIV / AIDS in the matter of its antiretroviral
drugs (ARV). “It means that it does not cover its ARV medicine for patients with HIV/AIDS,” said Sutedja. As it is known, the anti retroviral drugs have already been given by the government at free of charge. Continued Sutedja, HIV/AIDS was not a disease but a collection of diseases meaning that HIV/AIDS patients could be attacked by infectious diseases such as diarrhea, tuberculosis, dengue fever and other diseases. “So this is borne diseases. If there are patients with HIV/AIDS
suffer from diarrhea, the diarrhea treatment is borne by JKBM,’’ explained Sutedja. Flow and requirements of using JKBM for patients with HIV/AIDS according to Sutedja was the same as the others. So, the patients was enough to bring their Bali ID card, certificate stating the patient had no other health insurance from village authority and family card identity (KK) to community health center. Badung Refuses Again the Airport Expansion Draft Denpasar (Bali Post) –
Expansion Draft of Ngurah Rai International Airport proposed by PT Angkasa Pura (PAP) was refused again by Badung regency. Badung Regent A.A. Gde Agung in a meeting with tourism businesspeople in Kuta, last Saturday (Jan 9) said that the concept offered by the PAP did not change significantly and still featured the commercial area. Regent Gde Agung revealed that the PAP has presented the re-expansion of Ngurah Rai Airport in the province recently. Afterwards, the presentation was also resumed to the Badung Regency. From the presentation, it was noted that the airport expansion did not meet the expectation. Other than building more constructions of commercial areas in the form of shopping malls, the concept and Balinese architecture
were not implemented maximally. “The concept offered was not pursuant to as expected. It even did not accommodate several inputs, including that of former Vice President Jusuf Kalla. However, regarding to the building height, there is no problem,” said Gde Agung. Furthermore, it was said that the concept of airport development putting more emphasis on the mall area than functional areas. Even, this could harm small businesses. Of course, this mater would be very detrimental to the development of community-based economy. Meanwhile, concerning with its Balinese architecture, it was actually very easy to adopt. Problems with Cooler, VAR Distributor Hindered The delayed distribution of antirabies vaccine (VAR) within the past four days causing a vacant stock at Sanglah Hospital, in fact, was caused by the problem in cooling machine storage of VAR in Jakarta distributor. The Head of Bali Health Services Nyoman Sutedja when contacted last Sunday (Jan 10) revealed this matter. “I obtained information that the cooling machine of VAR has got problem. Consequently, the distributor did not
dare to accept a lot of VAR because it was afraid if the strength would reduce,” he said. However, according to the latest information, the problem could have been overcome and the distribution of VAR was back to normal. “He said that it could be overcome and on Monday the order of VAR for Bali Health Services will arrive soon,’’ added Sutedja. Meanwhile, stock VAR at Bali Health Services itself remained about 20 vials.
In the meantime, the vacant VAR stock occurring at Sanglah Hospital within the past four days finally turned available since last Saturday (Jan 9) afternoon. “Our order amounting to 500 vials was received last Saturday afternoon. So now Sanglah Hospital can provide the VAR demand normally,” said the Secretary of Rabies Management Team, Ken Wirasandi when contacted last Sunday in separate place. (san)

Badung Carries Out Adjustment to RTRWP of Bali Denpasar (Bali Post) –
Badung Regent that was previously reported to refuse the Regional Legislation on Bali Regional Spatial Layout Plan (RTRWP) along with several other regents in Bali started to speak. Regent Gde Agung affirmed to comply with regional regulations established by the province. Even, currently his side has done clarification on RTRWP of Bali through the preparation of detailed spatial layout plan (RDTR). Gde Agung said that his party has made a number of steps involved in the adjustment of RTRW of Bali. Some of them were by controlling the problematic buildings. For instance, the villas did not comply with the land utilization and buildings that violated the height limits. “Today we are doing adjustments to RTRW of Bali. One of the strategic steps taken is by the control of problematic buildings in Badung Regency,” he said. In
addition, Gde Agung also claimed to agree with a number of ideas proposed by Governor of Bali Mangku Pastika. One of those ideas mentioned was the construction of the flyover. Gde Agung said that it was positive in seeking a solution to congestion occurring at some points, chiefly at the main tourist routes. Despite claiming to agree, Gde Agung also gave the idea of building an underground road. Underground road was better recognized because the underground road would not affect the face of Bali. In other words, the appeal of the landscape was not necessary to be sacrificed, and it still could be enjoyed. He explained that to build the underground road was not an impossible thing to do. In some countries, the underground road has been adopted. For Bali, it could be implemented without neglecting the studies in accordance with Balinese culture. (ded)

Inadequate Academic Qualifications
Certification of 25 Thousands of Teachers Hampered Denpasar (Bali Post) –
Recorded 25,305 teachers or equal to 52.5 percent of the total number of teachers in Bali reaching 48,200 people were at risk because they could not follow the process of teacher certification. They were hampered to follow the certification process in order to enjoy the benefits of the teaching profession (TPG) being equal to one-month salary every month because they do not comply with the required academic qualifications. In order to follow the certification process, a teacher had to have a minimum academic qualification namely Diploma 4/S1 Graduate. The Head of Bali Educational, Youth and Sport Services (Disdikpora), I Wayan Suasta, revealed the matter to Bali Post, last Sunday (Jan 10). According to Suasta, more than a half of teachers in Bali having inadequate academic qualifications became a major homework that must be completed by Disdikpora Bali and Disdikpora of regencies / city throughout Bali. Moreover, central government has set that at the end of 2013 all teachers in Indonesia should have had minimum academic qualification of S1Graduate/ Diploma 4. “So far, 22,895 new teachers, or about 47.5 percent of teachers in Bali have Graduate/Diploma 4 qualification. There are 25,305 teachers throughout Bali requiring the improvement of their academic qualification so that they can follow the certification process, “he emphasized.
In order to accelerate the accomplishment of the non-graduate teachers, he said, Bali provincial government regularly allocated to subsidize the education costs of teachers continuing their education to the level of Graduate/Diploma 4. In this 2010 Regional Budget, for example, Bali provincial government allocated at IDR 4.6 billion. Such amount of fund would be used to subsidize the education costs of 4,000 teachers continuing their education to the level of Graduate/Diploma 4. “The budget for teacher qualification improvement programs increased significantly in comparison to fiscal year 2009 only targeting 2,310 teachers. The increase nearly doubled,” he said.
Similar to the last financial year, he said, every teacher continuing their Graduate/Diploma education was also provided a subsidized education fund worth IDR 2 million / person. With the increasing number of teachers targeted almost doubled, his party hoped the eradication program of teachers that have not had Graduate/Diploma 4 qualification could be successfully completed. “We hope that a similar commitment would be executed by all regencies/city in Bali. On that account, the target of all teachers in Bali had a minimum academic qualification of Graduate/Diploma 4 at the end of 2013 could be realized accordingly,” he said hopefully. (kmb13)

Regional Budget 2010 of Karangasem Regency did not take side for society, especially the poor. It was proven by the budget for the procurement of rice for the poor (Raskin) worth IDR 98 million, but the budget of trips to outside the region and overseas totaled IDR 7 billion more. The Head of Karangasem House, I Gede Dana, last Sunday (Jan 10), in Amlapura admitted that the budget for the procurement of rice for the poor was less than IDR 100 million. Related to the soaring price of basic foods like rice and sugar these days, his party deplored the small budget for the procurement of rice. In fact, the Karangasem House has persisted in the 2010 budget discussions, in order to budget more in favor to the community. “Later in the budget revision, we will attempt to propose it again, so that more budget could touch the poor people,” he said. It was said, the budget of of-
ficial outside trip was recorded worth IDR 7 billion, consisting of official travelling to outside the area at the Regional Secretariat post worth IDR 2.817 billion more and the Empowerment of Village Community Board, the Village Administration at IDR 421.4 million and the post of Secretariat of Karangasem House was IDR 3.348 billion more. Meanwhile, the cost of foreign trips in the Secretariat post of Karangasem House was IDR 150 million, while at the post of the Manpower and Transmigration Services at IDR 195 million. Cost of official trips to other regions for the executive officers in Karangasem was similar to the previous years of experience for making a visit to Jakarta or for working visit. In the meantime, for members of parliament making visit to outside Bali was with the reason of Technical Guidance in Jakarta or Working Visit to various regions. Meanwhile, official trip overseas for the executive officials such as the Regent of Karangasem had the purpose for tourism promotion to Thailand, Singapore,
South Korea, U.S., Europe or Australia. At the end of December 2009, the Regent Geredeg went to Japan related to the cooperation with Japan. In addition to the procurement of small budget of rice for the poor, the budget for the Health Insurance accompanying Bali Mandara Health Insurance (JKBM) was also not in accordance with the MoU signed by the Regent of Karangasem I Wayan Geredeg with Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika. Karangasem Government only allocated for JKBM worth IDR 4 billion from IDR 8.7 billion originally planned. Deputy Regent of Karangasem IGL Rai accompanied by Regional Secretary of Karangasem, I Nengah Sudarsa, said, after put into question by the governor’s office pursuant to evaluation draft of Regional Legislation on Karangasem Regional Budget, the accompanying budget of KBM was at the level of around IDR 1 billion, from the original IDR 4 billion to nearly USD 5 billion. PGRI Chooses Back to EBTANAS Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Statement of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) mentioning the score of national exam (UN) should not be the only measurement in determining educational success of students was responded positively by the Secretary-General of the Indonesia Association of Teachers (PGRI) of Bali Chapter, Gede Wenten Aryasudha, and that of Denpasar City, I Nengah Madiadnyana. According to Wenten Aryasudha and Madiadnyana, EBTANAS format prevailed before the UN was a more objective measurement of student achievement in their entirety. Because, the learning achievement of students in previous semesters, semester grades especially odd and even at the end, still became an important parameter in determining student graduation. To determine the final score of students stated in the certificate, it used the format of one time odd semester grades and one time even semester grades at the end of the level
plus two times of the score of EBTANAS divided by four. Most importantly, the determination of a student’s graduation from an educational unit level when EBTANAS format was fully implemented would become the right and authority of the board of teachers. Of course, it would consider the process and learning achievement of students for three full years. “If the government wants to assess and evaluate the final exam format implemented today, we hope it would be back to EBTANAS format as in earlier times. Of course, with various studies and improvements in order to cover the existing weaknesses in the EBTANAS format implemented previously, “said Madiadnyana justified by Wenten Aryasudha. Until now, Klungkung Regency is declared as rabies-free area. Although along the year 2009 occurred at least 62 cases of dog bites and Klungkung was surrounded by areas rabies infected areas such as Bangli, Gianyar and Karangasem, Klungkung was unnecessary to allocate much budget for rabies prevention through the Regional Budget 2010. The fund allocated was merely around IDR 50 million. Task Implementer of the Head of Klungkung Health Services, Ketut Sutarta, when asked for his confirmation, last Sunday (Jan 10), admitted that in the year 2010 his party did not allocate much budget for the cost of rabies prevention. The fund worth IDR 50 million was approved for the procurement of
about 200 vials of anti-rabies vaccine (VAR). “After all, Klungkung still has a stock about 110 vials of VAR up to these days,” asserted Surata while mentioning that VAR stock was stored in the Department of Health and Klungkung Hospital. For the utilization, VAR stock was distributed to community health centers, scattering in the subdistricts, including in Nusa Penida Klungkung. Meanwhile, related to the attacks of rabies in some areas in Bali, Sutarta stated that Klungkung still included in the safe category are. Indeed, from January to December 2009, there were 62 cases of dog bites. Cyprus’ leaders launch intensified talks AP
NICOSIA, Cyprus – Rival leaders on the divided island of Cyprus launched a round of intensified talks Monday aimed at paving the way for a peace deal this year. President Dimitris Christofias, a Greek Cypriot, and breakaway Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat started six daylong sessions, hoping to overcome obstacles that hindered progress during 60 meetings over the past 16 months. The talks will be held Jan. 1113 and Jan. 25-27. Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of union with Greece. The island joined the European Union in 2004, but only Greek Cypriots enjoy the benefits. Real progress would restore the talks’ credibility and rekindle hope among jaded Cypriots that their
leaders can tackle a decades-old dispute that is hindering Turkey’s EU membership bid and harming EU-NATO cooperation. Talks are focusing on powersharing under a future federal structure, the economy and EU matters. But they appeared to be on shaky ground even before they started. New Turkish Cypriot proposals leaked last week that include separate rights to sign international agreements and control of the Mediterranean island’s air space. Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou on Sunday called the proposals “unacceptable” and warned they could not constitute the basis for negotiations. Other key sticking points remain sensitive arrangements on property lost during the 1974 war and granting military intervention rights to Turkey.

Al-Qaida offers exchange for French hostage AP
CAIRO – Al-Qaida’s North Africa offshoot demanded the release of four of its members in exchange for a French hostage it kidnapped two months ago, in a message posted on militant Web sites Monday that gave a 20 day deadline. Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb said that their only condition for the freeing of Pierre Camatte is the release of four members of the group arrested by Mali several months ago. “We give France and Mali 20 days from the date of issuing this statement to respond to our legitimate demand otherwise the two governments will be fully responsible for the French hostage’s life,” it said in a statement dated Sunday. The group announced last month its kidnapping of Camatte in Mali Nov. 25 and three Spaniards in Mauritania five days later. “We call upon the French public opinion and the hostage’s family to exert pressure on the government of (French president Nicolas) Sarkozy and prevent it from committing the same folly committed by (British prime Minister) Gordon Brown toward his British citizen,” it said. The group was referring to the killing of British hostage Edwin Dyer in May 31 after Britain refused to pay ransom
and the release of a radical Islamist preacher held in Britain. Dyer was one of four European tourists — as well as two senior U.N. envoys — kidnapped last year near the Mali and Niger borders. They were likely abducted by local gunmen and then transferred to al-Qaida’s group. One of the four hostages, Werner Greiner, a Swiss, was released in July 2009 after spending six months in captivity in Mali. His wife and another German woman were freed in April 2009 together with two Canadian U.N. envoys, who had been captured separately in December, 2008. The group has not yet set conditions for the release of the three Spaniards who had been traveling at the tail end of a convoy distributing aid to poor villages along the coast of Mauritania when they were abducted. In its earlier statement, the group said the kidnapping was in retaliation for “the Crusaders’ war against Muslims and Islam everywhere and the killing of innocent people and occupying their lands.” The authenticity of Monday’s statement could not be immediately verified, but it was posted on an Islamic militant Web site that publishes statements and video footage by al-Qaida and other militant groups. Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb operates mainly in Algeria but is suspected of crossing the country’s porous desert borders to spread violence in the rest of northwestern Africa.
US service member killed in southern Afghanistan AP
KABUL – Bombs killed an American service member and two Afghan road construction workers in separate attacks in southern Afghanistan, officials said Monday. The southern half of the country, the Taliban heartland, has seen unrelenting violence as the U.S. military builds up its presence in the area. Most of the 30,000 additional American troops that President Barack Obama has ordered to Afghanistan will be deployed there. A vehicle carrying the road crew was hit by a roadside bomb Sunday in the Nawa district in Helmand province, according to the Interior Ministry. It said two workers were killed and two were wounded. The attack occurred a day after a British correspondent and a U.S. Marine were killed by a roadside bomb in the same area. Sunday Mirror journalist Rupert Hamer, 39, was the first British journalist killed in the conflict. Hamer and photographer Philip Coburn, 43, were accompanying a
U.S. Marine patrol Saturday when their vehicle was hit by a makeshift bomb near the village of Nawa, the British Defense Ministry said. Coburn was seriously wounded. Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Monday expressed condolences to the family of the British journalist killed as well as to members of the British media community. Karzai said he appreciated the “brave journalists” who risk their lives in Helmand. U.S. spokesman Lt. Nico Melendez said an American service member also was killed Sunday in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, but he gave no further details. At least seven American troops have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year, according to an Associated Press tally. Obama has said U.S. troops will
start withdrawing from Afghanistan in July 2011, and American and Afghan officials already are preparing for the transition. The Afghan government has announced plans to take over the U.S.run prison at the Bagram air base. No date for the handover, has been set but officials have said it could occur by the end of the year. The U.S. military opened a new prison to replace the original facility, which was tainted by allegations of human rights abuses. Navy Vice Adm. Robert Harward, the commander of U.S. detainee operations in Afghanistan, said some prisoners could be held by the U.S. in so-called field detention sites after the handover but they would be turned over to the Afghans upon request. He also said the cases of a number of non-Afghans in U.S. custody would be reviewed. There are about 750 inmates at Bagram. “Those will be all under Afghan operations and any U.S. detention will fall under that system,” he said at a press conference.
Pope denounces failure to chart new climate treaty AP
VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI has denounced the failure of world leaders to agree to a new climate change treaty by saying world peace depends on the responsible safeguarding of God’s creation.
Benedict issued the admonition in a speech Monday to ambassadors accredited to the Vatican. The pontiff criticized the “political resistance” to chart a new treaty during last month’s negotiations in Copehnagen and said he hoped upcoming discussions would bear more fruit.
Benedict said the issue is critical for island nations and in places like Africa, where the battle for resources results in wars. He called for a “rechanneling” of agricultural efforts in Afghanistan and Latin America to fight the drug trade. He said “to cultivate peace, one must protect creation!”

BEIJING – Thousands of Chinese officials have fled overseas with as much as $50 billion in their pockets in stolen government funds during the country’s economic boom over the past three decades, China’s top prosecutorial office said Monday. Using the services of criminal gangs in other countries, former officials are often able to launder money, buy real estate and obtain fake IDs, according to an article posted on the Web site of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate. The report from the top prosecutor’s office said developed nations, including the United States and Australia, have become “heaven for those in hiding.” A joint multi-agency government task force has been set up to stem the flood of corrupt officials stealing and escaping the country. “According to statistics, China now has 4,000 officials hiding overseas with $50 billion,” the report said. It was unclear how the numbers were calculated. They include the Public Security, Justice and Foreign Affairs ministries joining together “to prevent the fleeing
of those who violate disciplines or laws,” said a notice posted on the Ministry of Supervision’s Web site. “All in all, efforts should continue to be made to catch and arrest the corrupt officials,” it said, while also making their lives on the run difficult. It did not give details on how it would apprehend the officials or get them back to China to face the law. The official Global Times newspaper reported Monday that the Ministry of Supervision monitored overseas trips made by government officials last year, with investigations conducted on 319 officials in 103 cases. Overseas trips have been put under more scrutiny since Yang Xianghong, the party chief of a district in Whenzhou city in eastern Zhejiang province, went on a government junket to France in 2008 and refused to return home. His wife was arrested by police on suspicion of trying to launder 20 million yuan ($2.9 million). Shao Daosheng, an analyst from China Academy of Social Sciences, told the newspaper there are several ways that officials typically flee: during overseas work trips, using fake identification and with the help of criminal gangs.

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea proposed concluding a peace treaty to formally end the Korean War this year, saying Monday that improved ties with the United States and an end to sanctions are conditions for resuming international negotiations aimed at ridding it of nuclear weapons. The North’s call came as President Barack Obama’s special envoy for human rights in North Korea said earlier in the day during a visit to Seoul that any normalization of relations depends on an improvement in what he called the North’s “appalling” human rights situation. The North’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the resumption of the six-nation nuclear talks depends on building confidence between Pyongyang and Washington and called for a peace treaty, which it has long demanded. Before nuclear talks can get back on track, North Korea and the United States must improve their relationship by beginning talks aimed at signing a peace treaty to formally end the Korean War, the lack of which it called a “root cause of the hostile relations,” the ministry said in a statement. The 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, thus leaving the peninsula technically at war. North Korea, the U.S.-led United Nations Command and China are signatories to the cease-fire, while South Korea has never signed the accord. The statement called for a peace treaty to be concluded this year, which it emphasized marks the 60th anniversary since the outbreak of the Korean War. North Korea pulled out of the sixparty nuclear talks with the U.S., China, South Korea, Russia and Japan last year
after international criticism of a longrange rocket launch that drew U.N. sanctions. It later conducted its second underground nuclear test. “This appears to be an overture by the North Koreans to try and, in their own way, break through the logjam that we have seen for more than a year now in the talks,” said Peter Beck, an expert on North Korea currently conducting research at Stanford University. The proposal comes after a landmark visit to North last month by Stephen Bosworth, President Barack Obama’s special envoy for the country. Bosworth said after his trip that the North agreed on the necessity of returning to the talks, though the country has not said when it would rejoin them. Bosworth also said he conveyed a message from Obama calling for the “complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula” and underlining Washington’s willingness to help bring the isolated country back into the international fold. He said discussion of a peace treaty could take place within the six-party talks framework. North Korea said after the meeting that the two sides discussed a wide range of issues including denuclearization, forging a peace treaty, improving bilateral relations and economic and energy assistance. The six-party talks began in 2003, and in 2005 and 2007 there were agreements on a disarmament pact which calls for North Korea to end its nuclear programs in exchange for economic aid, security assurances and diplomatic rec-
ognition. North Korea also suggested that the withdrawal of sanctions could lead to a speedy resumption of the talks. “The removal of the barrier of such discrimination and distrust as sanctions may soon lead to the opening of the sixparty talks,” the North’s statement said. Robert King, Obama’s special envoy for human rights in North Korea, harshly criticized the communist country Monday and said that the situation is preventing a normalization of relations. “It’s one of the worst places in terms of lack of human rights,” King told reporters after meeting South Korea’s foreign minister. “The situation is appalling.” He added, “Improved relations between the United States and North Korea will have to involve greater respect for human rights by North Korea.” North Korea has long been regarded as having one of the world’s worst human rights records. The country holds some 154,000 political prisoners in six large camps across the country, according to South Korean government estimates. Pyongyang denies the existence of prison camps and often reacts strongly to foreign criticism regarding human rights. Separately, Vitit Muntarbhorn, the United Nations’ special investigator on human rights in North Korea, kicked off a six-day visit to South Korea to meet government officials, civic activists and North Korean defectors.

JAKARTA - A flood inundating three villages in Bangil district, Pasuruan, East Java, since last Saturday (Jan 9) until Monday (Jan 11) morning, has forced three local elementary schools to postpone their semester examinations. The three schools are the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Miftahul Anwar Kalianyar, State Elementary School (SDN) 1 Kalianyar and State Elementary School (SDN) Tambaan. M Syafi’i, headmaster of the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Miftahul Anwar Kalianyar, said his school could only conduct the final exam for students in classes 1,2 and 3 while students in classes 4,5 and 6 were unable to take the exam since their class-rooms were still dirty by the mud from the flood. Meanwhile, the semester exam at SDN 1 Kalianyar was completely postponed since all papers for the
examination had been affected by the flood water. SDN 1 Kalianyar’s headmaster, Ismail, said his school was supposed to conduct the semester exam starting this Monday (Jan 11) to Friday (Jan 15). However, he expected the exam would be started on Tuesday (Jan 12) soon after the school had the damaged exam papers replaced with new ones. SDN Tambaan was also among the schools unable to execute the semester exam. The headmaster, Nikmah, said students of classes 1, 2, 3 and 4 could have their exam in accordance with the exact schedule. However, those studying in class 5 had to take the exam in the library room while students in class 6 were completely unable to follow semester exam because their class room was still soiled by mud from the flood.

The high court last month quashed an earlier two-year prison sentence against pilot Marwoto Komar, saying he “tried his best” to save the Boeing 737 which crashed on landing in Yogyakarta, central Java, in 2007. “There’s an error in interpretation of the law by the high court. By freeing him it’s like saying the incident never took place,” Yogyakarta prosecutors office spokesman Fora Noenoehitoe told AFP. “We maintain our position that he should be jailed.” The plane hit the tarmac at twice the recommended landing speed and speared into neighbouring rice fields before bursting into flames. Komar says faulty wing flaps were

NEGARA - Bad weather condition engulfing the waters of Bali within the past few days did not only make the crossing vigilant, but also made fishers reluctant to go to sea. Weather conditions changing rapidly and sometimes erratic made the fishers feel to be fooled when going to sea. However, they did not get the fish as expected. Strong winds accompanied by heavy downpours often occurred suddenly and unexpectedly. This condition made a number of fishers at Pengambengan and Cupel not sail. One of the fishers at Pengambengan, Mulyadi, 46, last Sunday (Jan 10), said that since the past three days he was forced to idle. According to him, the current weather was not friendly for fishers and it was ever changing. As recently, Mulyadi could sail by his boat due to the sunny weather. However, when he got him in the middle of the sea suddenly it rained and strong winds blew. “My boat was nearly toppled by the wind,” he said. To kill his spare time during absent from going to sea, Mulyadi chose to take side job as a coolie at a building construction. Not only fishers suffering from this bad weather, had crossing at Bali Strait to be alert, too. Gilimanuk harbormaster, Dewa Nyoman Kari, said that currently his

DENPASAR – Bali Zoo Park which is located in Gianyar has additional collection after a baby ape or “Hylobates syndactalus” was born on January 8th 2010. Kadek Subagia, the curator of the zoo, said “the new born was the results of the marriage of the female called Si Menik and the male Si Boy. This is the third baby of the couple.” Current, the baby is being treated by a veterinarian in order to maintain its health condition. “The birth of the baby ape is quite rare in captivity in this is a big success for the zoo. It is one of the effort by the zoo to preserve endanger animals and also become the
means of education for the people,” he added. Kadek explained that the ape which is has no tail or usually called “siamang” is originally from Sumatra. The height could up to 1 meter and 14 kilograms in weight. They can live for more than 30 years in captivity. The food of the animals are fruits, leafs, and small insect. Balinese Architectural Style: From Bale, Bade to Villa Each community around the globe has its own characteristic related to convenient housing in accordance with its surroundings. If Eskimos have unique dome-like igloo in polar zone, Balinese people have a house called bale or pavilion. Designed for two seasons, it is thatched to generate warmth or coolness. The ones in original design remain to be found almost everywhere in Bali. Bangli Regency, for instance, has Penglipuran traditional village. It resembles a living showcase of Balinese compounds designed based on traditional architectural concept. Zonal arrangement is made in such a way where sanctum lies at upper stream or higher place, then residential area at the lower and followed by cemetery at the end. Similarly, the structure and affixing ornaments in use goes along with the local concept. Another ancient pavilion can be observed at Kertha Gosa Hall of Justice in Klungkung. This pavilion was formerly used as courtroom during the reign of Klungkung kingdom. These two destinations are visited by many tourists every day. Traces of written source left regarding to Balinese architecture retains in the manuscripts like the Asta Bumi and Asta Kosala Kosali. Students of architecture in Bali are, at least, also given introduction to this subject. Though original manuscripts are difficult to find, its transliterated version are
widely sold at most bookstores in Denpasar. Both manuscripts are referred in designing various sanctum and traditional pavilion. By nature, Asta Bumi highlights about the basic measurements of sanctum building, house, geomancy and selection of good wood used for each building. Meanwhile, Asta Kosala Kosali also contains some standard measurements used for making bale building and its attached bed’s structure. In addition, it also alludes the making of bade tower used in cremation ceremony. The latter is explained from the materials required until the initiation rites and mantra chanted before the tower is used for the cremation. Let us be back to Balinese bale. Residential zone in Balinese compound is filled with a series of traditional houses having different functions. Each building is called bale. It is generally filled with bale delod (southern pavilion for organizing ritual), bale daja (northern pavilion for bedroom), bale dauh (western pavilion for hosting guests), kitchen and rice granary. Afterwards, each has fixed measurement, number of beam, ornament pursuant to its type and distance from one another and from sanctum and kitchen. Failing to meet these standards, it is believed to result disharmony in the dwellers. Marked characteristics of bale lay on its base, beam (6, 8, 9 and 12), roof
and other structures. In the past, bale always used alang-alang or thatch roof. The alang-alang grass itself can give warmth during the rainy season and coolness during the dry season. Then, the wall applied the mixture of refined soil, husk of rice and reinforced by bamboo bars. Today, some elements like foundation, wall and roof have been replaced with modern materials. However, its design and structure remain the same. In keeping with the development of tourism industry, the bale architectural style has much widely inspired the design of tourism property across the island. It does not only give new style to the property itself, but also preserves the indigenous traditional concept. Based on this inspiration, creative undagi (traditional architect) have produced a wide variety of gazebo for hotel, villa or spa outlets. Interestingly, bale has now been made in mass production in the form of wooden knockdown. It shores up the emerging trend of eco-friendly property both at home and overseas. It is good to install at coastal and chill area. At the beginning, the bale was used for private living by Balinese people. Later, this concept is applied to tourist accommodations like cottage and villa. Tourists visiting Bali can now rejoice in the comfort and tranquility of the bale as the Balinese do. Ingredients: 600 gr baby squid, cleaned and diced 1 tbsp freshly squeezed limejuice 1/3 tsp powdered black pepper 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp oil 5 shallots, peeled and sliced 2 large red chilies, seeded and sliced 1/2 cup spice paste for seafood 1 cup chicken stock 5 sprigs lemon basil, sliced Fried shallots and sprigs of lemon basil to garnish Preparation: Heat oil in wok, add shallots, chilies and squid and sauté for 2 minutes over high heat. Add seafood spice paste and continue to sauté for 1 more minute. Pour in chicken stock, add the sliced basil and bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 minute. Add the snails and continue cooking until the papaya softens. Season with salt and pepper to taste and garnish with fried shallots. Helpful hint: If you do not care for snails. You can substitute 12 dried black Chinese mushroom. Washed and soaked I warm water for 20minutes. Add them together with the papaya to ensure they will be tender by the time the papaya is cooked. HONG KONG - Shanghai and Hong Kong led a regional stocks rally on Monday as investors welcomed Beijing’s green light for a new futures market as well as a short-selling experiment in China. The markets were also given a lift by data released the day before that showed mainland exports surged 17.7 percent in December to snap a 13-month falling streak. The week across the region started on a high despite disappointing jobs figures out of the eurozone and the United States on Friday, which put a damper on recent optimism for the global economic recovery. Shanghai shares rose 1.30 percent early on as securities firms and banks rallied on Beijing’s approval Friday of the launch of a stock index futures market, and a trial for short selling and margin trading, dealers said. Hong Kong shares were 1.46 percent up. “The approval raises expecta-
tions that brokerages may gain a lot from the diversification of investment tools,” Huatai Securities analyst Zhou Lin told Dow Jones Newswires. There were also gains in Sydney, which was up 0.65 percent by noon on the back of the China export figures. Seoul added 0.55 percent and Taipei 0.72 percent. Tokyo was closed Monday for a public holiday. The US Labor Department reported the economy lost 85,000 jobs in December while the unemployment rate held at 10.0 percent. And in the European Union the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for the 16 euro countries hit 10 percent in November — the highest
since the currency was launched a decade ago and up from 9.9 percent in October. That news hit the dollar, which ended last week’s New York trading at 92.72 yen, down from 93.25 yen. Crude jumped in Asian trade, as the cold snap in the northern hemisphere boosted demand for heating fuel. New York’s main futures contract, light sweet crude for February delivery, jumped 65 cents to 83.40 dollars a barrel. Brent North Sea crude for February delivery rose 64 cents to 82.01 dollars. Gold opened higher in Hong Kong at 1,154.00-1,155.00 US dollars an ounce, up from Friday’s close of 1,124.50-1,125.50 dollars.
SINGAPORE - Singapore is unlikely to sink back into recession but economic recovery this year is expected to be sluggish, Trade Minister Lim Hng Kiang said Monday. The consumption-boosting effects of government stimulus packages implemented at the height of the global economic slump are waning and continued high unemployment in the United States will hurt demand for Singapore exports, he said. However, Lim said in parliament: “A double-dip recession is not likely.” He added: “The recovery in 2010 is expected to be uneven. The risk of a return to recession is low in the absence of further financial shocks.” Lim said “growth momentum in the second half of 2010 may slow down as the effects of global fiscal stimulus measures
and inventory restocking wane. “In addition, weak household balance sheets and persistently high unemployment, especially in the US, will weigh down on consumer demand in our key export markets.” The US Labor Department said Friday US employers cut a worse-than-expected 85,000 jobs in December while unemployment held at 10.0 percent, dashing hopes for a quick rebound in the world’s biggest economy. Singapore’s trade reliant economy shrank 2.1 percent last year after slipping into a severe recession in the third quarter of 2008 due to the impact of the global economic crisis. Lim repeated figures stated by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on New Year ’s Eve that the economy is expected to grow between 3.0 and 5.0 percent this year. “External demand will continue to grow (in 2010) but at a sluggish pace,” he said.
British banks to see recovery falter: survey Agence France-Presse
LONDON - British banks fear their fragile recovery will grind to a halt over the next few months, according to a survey by employers’ organization the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). Growth in Britain’s financial services industry was lower than expected towards the end of 2009, the quarterly study by CBI and PricewaterhouseCoopers showed. Banks and building societies warn that an increase in retail and corporate banking lending over the next six months will be choked off by March, leading to cuts in income and profits. “Firms do not expect growth in business volumes to continue over the coming three months and do not anticipate improving profitability, despite further cost reductions,” the CBI said. Asked how their business volumes fared in the three months to December, 32 percent of institutions said volumes rose, while 28 percent said they had fallen. The resulting balance of plus four percent is lower than September’s figure of plus seven
percent. Ian McCafferty, CBI chief economic advisor, said: “The bounce in UK financial services activity over the past six months is not expected to last as we enter 2010. “Firms see their business volumes falling back again, with no further improvement in profitability over the next three months.” Banks are the worst-hit, fearing they will see business volumes drop back to the lows of 2009 when the global financial crisis was biting hard. They pointed to a number of factors, including a flight of savers’ money from the ‘safe haven’ of major banks to investment products in search of higher interest returns and to take advantage of a rising stock market. The CBI did however see some encouraging signs. “On a more positive note, financial services firms’ confidence in the general business situation has continued to increase, profitability improved and a much slower reduction in numbers employed was seen in this survey,” McCafferty said. “Job losses are also expected to be minimal in the coming quarter.”

Artie Lange Released From Hospital TROUBLED comedian Artie Lange has been released from hospital after he allegedly tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself nine times. Lange, who is a regular on Howard Stern’s radio show, was checked into the Jersey City Medical Center in New Jersey over the weekend after his mother reportedly found him wounded at his apartment. A spokesperson for the star confirmed to RadarOnline.com he has been discharged, but refused to comment on Lange’s condition. Paramedics found Lange with nine “self-inflicted stab wounds”, according to police Lieutenant Detective Mark Competello. Cops have since told the website they are treating the incident as a suicide attempt and no further investigation is planned. The funnyman had his driving licence revoked for seven months in September after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of drugs. He told police he had a prescribed sleeping pill in his system when he was pulled over, and was ordered to serve 12 hours in an intoxicated driver resource program. He has previously discussed his battles with depression, a prior suicide attempt, his heroin addiction and his father’s death.

MADRID – Hoping to save a dried Spanish wetland from an underground peat fire, the government has unleashed floodwaters onto an expanse of the marsh now under threat due to past water mismanagement. The wetlands of Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park are recognized by UNESCO as environmentally valuable because of their importance to both resident and migrating birds. Over the weekend, waters diverted 150 kilometers (93 miles) from the Tagus River began pouring from an underground pipe onto the wildlife sanctuary, in the central Castilla-La Mancha plain. Environment Minister Elena Espinosa said while visiting the park on Saturday that the action was necessary “for the good of biodiversity.” The EU-protected park’s wetlands have been drying for decades, and its lagoons now show just 1 percent of the surface water they did in 1981. But much of the damage has been done in recent years, Espinosa said, as local farmers sank unauthorized wells to leech water from an underground aquifer maintaining the grasslands, while too much water has also been drawn from the Guadiana
River that feeds the park’s two main lagoons. In August, an underground peat fire ignited spontaneously amid intense summer heat, sending smoke drifting up from the parched landscape too hot for any bird to want to land. Normally, the park is visited by Black-necked Grebes, Squaccos and Purple Herons, among others. Following an EU investigation, Spain said it would divert 20 million cubic meters (700 million cubic feet) of water from the Buendia reservoir, on the Tagus. To avoid water loss through evaporation and ground seepage, the government also cleared the use of the pipeline, which normally carries Tagus water to La Mancha residents. “This spring is going to be spectacular at Las Tablas, there is going to be plenty of water and many birds,” said Jose Maria Barreda, president of the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha. No one has been punished for illegally draining water from the park, some 185 kilometers (115 miles) south of Madrid. The Environment Ministry said in October it would seek to buy nearby land to halt water being drawn from wells. Fire safety expert Dr. Guillermo Rein, of Edinburgh University, said heavy winter rains may also help douse the peat.
CAIRO – Egyptian archaeologists discovered a new set of tombs belonging to the workers who built the great pyramids, shedding light on how the laborers lived and ate more than 4,000 years ago, the antiquities department said Sunday. The thousands of men who built the last remaining wonder of the ancient world ate meat regularly, worked in three months shifts and were given the honor of being buried in mud brick tombs within the shadow of the sacred pyramids they worked on. The newly discovered tombs date to Egypt’s 4th Dynasty (2575 B.C. to 2467 B.C.) when the great pyramids were built, according to the head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, Zahi Hawass. Graves of the pyramid builders were first discovered in the area in 1990, he said, and discoveries such as these show that the workers were paid laborers, rather than the slaves of popular imagination. “These tombs were built beside the king’s pyramid, which indicates that these people were not by any means slaves,” said Hawass in the statement. “If they were slaves, they would not have been able to build their tombs beside their
king’s.” Evidence from the site, Hawass said, indicates that the approximately 10,000 laborers working on the pyramids ate 21 cattle and 23 sheep sent to them daily from farms in northern and southern Egypt. He added that the workers were rotated every three months and the burial sites were for those who died during the construction. Discoveries like these reveal other aspects of ancient Egyptian society besides just the stone monuments and temples frequented by priests, rulers and nobles, explained Salima Ikram, a professor of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo.
“It is important to find tombs that belong to lower class people that are not made out of stone that tell you about the social organization and the relative wealth of a range of people,” she said. Workers’ tombs from the 4th Dynasty were typically made of mud bricks and shaped like cones and covered in white plaster, probably echoing the nearby limestone-clad pyramids of the kings. The most important new tomb discovered, according to Hawass, belonged to a man named Idu and the statement described it as rectangular in structure, with a plaster covered mud brick outside casing.

LAS VEGAS – The company behind the magicJack, the cheap Internet phone gadget that’s been heavily promoted on TV, has made a new version of the device that allows free calls from cell phones in the home, in a fashion that’s sure to draw protest from cellular carriers. The new magicJack uses, without permission, radio frequencies for which cellular carriers have paid billions of dollars for exclusive licenses. YMax Corp., which is based in Palm Beach, Fla., said this week at the International Consumers Electronics Show that it plans to start selling the device in about four months for $40, the same price as the original magicJack. As before, it will provide free calls to the U.S. and Canada for one year. The device is, in essence, a very small cellular tower for the home. The size of a deck of cards, it plugs into a PC, which needs a broadband Internet connection. The device then detects when
a compatible cell phone comes within 8 feet, and places a call to it. The user enters a short code on the phone. The phone is then linked to the magicJack, and as long as it’s within range (YMax said it will cover a 3,000-square-foot home) magicJack routes the call itself, over the Internet, rather than going through the carrier’s cellular tower. No minutes are subtracted from the user’s account with the carrier. Any extra fees for international calls are subtracted from the user’s account with magicJack, not the carrier. According to YMax CEO Dan Borislow, the device will connect to any phone that uses the GSM standard, which in the U.S. includes phones from AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile USA. At a demonstration at CES, a visitor’s phone with a T-Mobile account successfully placed and received calls through the magicJack. Most phones from Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp. won’t connect to the device. Borislow said the device is legal because wireless spectrum licenses don’t extend into the home.

SYDNEY – World number one Roger Federer will not play in this week’s Kooyong Classic in Melbourne, preferring to practise ahead of next week’s Australian Open, tournament officials said on Monday. Tournament Director Colin Stubs said he had been holding the eighth and final spot in the eight-player exhibition event open for Federer, but the Swiss opted not to take up his place in the draw. Stubs said Federer’s manager, Tony Godsick, contacted him early Monday to say that the 15-time Grand Slam champion would not take up the option of eighth spot in the field. Federer, who is bidding for his fourth Australian Open, was defeated by Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the semi-finals at the Qatar Open last week before heading to Melbourne. Federer is scheduled to have a hit on the Australian Open’s Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday. American Andy Roddick also opted not to play in the round-robin event after reaching Sunday’s ATP final in Brisbane. Stubs is expected to announce the eighth and final place for the Kooyong Classic at the players’ media conference on Tuesday. The Kooyong field contains six of the ATP’s top 11 players including Argentinian Juan Martin Del Potro, who beat Federer in last year’s US Open final. WASHINGTON - The New Orleans Hornets took control in the fourth quarter to defeat the troubled Washington Wizards 115-110 and win their sixth consecutive game on Sunday. The Hornets broke a 101-101 deadlock with six successive points late in the fourth to put away the Wizards, who were seeking their second win in a row without suspended guard Gilbert Arenas. “We are still getting better as a team,” New Orleans forward Peja Stojakovic, who scored 20 points, told reporters. “Tonight we were up 14 (in the third quarter) and we let the lead slip away. We’ve got to be more focused on our game plan and be able to finish games better.” Rookie Marcus Thornton scored 10 of his 15 points in the deciding fourth for New Orleans, who trailed Washington 82-80 after three quarters. Messi hat-trick fires Barca, Real sink Mallorca Reuters -
MADRID - Lionel Messi kept Barcelona on top of La Liga with a hat-trick in a 5-0 win at Tenerife on Sunday and Real Madrid had kept up the pressure with a 2-0 home win over Real Mallorca. Champions Barca, two points clear of Real with 43 from 17 games, had goalkeeper Victor Valdes to thank for setting up their first win of 2010. Valdes saved three one-on-ones in the early stages, the first deflecting on to the crossbar, before Barca found any kind of rhythm in the face of frenetic pressuring from their hosts. Bojan Krkic, in for the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic, set up Messi for the opener in the 36th minute and Carles Puyol headed the second from a Messi free kick in the 44th. Messi poked in the third after excellent approach play from Andres Iniesta and Krkic, the Argentine lobbed the fourth, his 12th of the campaign, from outside the area in the 75th and defender Ezequiel Luna scored an own goal to complete the rout. Real were quickly in front at a snowy Bernabeu when Gonzalo Higuain cut in from the right flank and curled a shot into the top corner after seven minutes. LUANDA – Hosts Angola conceded four late goals to draw 4-4 with Mali on Sunday in a dramatic opening match of the African Nations Cup overshadowed by the ambush on the Togo team bus. Seydou Keita was on target twice as the Malians scored four times in the last 11 minutes of an extraordinary game to deflate the Angolans who had looked to be cruising to a comfortable victory. Angola were in complete control after striker Flavio headed two goals in quick succession late in the first half. Gilberto added the third with a twice-taken penalty midway through the second and Manucho converted a second penalty to put them 4-0 up. The tournament had been thrown into doubt after gunmen attacked the Togo team bus in the enclave of Cabinda on Friday, killing the driver and two members of the Togolese delegation. Despite the attack, Sunday’s opener at the newlybuilt November 11 stadium went ahead in a carnival atmosphere which was temporarily broken when a minute’s silence was held for the victims before kickoff. A scrappy opening half hour produced no hint of the drama to follow in the Group A match.
Angola went ahead after 36 minutes when Flavio was left unmarked at a free kick and took advantage by heading in from close range after Gilberto curled the ball into the area. Six minutes later, Mabina sent over a cross from the right and Flavio easily beat his marker to the ball to head the second. Despite a line-up boasting Real Madrid’s Mahamadou Diarra, Barcelona’s Keita and the experienced Frederic Kanoute in attack, Mali were being outplayed and fell further behind in the 67th minute Gilberto was fouled in the area and took the penalty himself, scoring at the second attempt after his first effort was disallowed for encroachment. Manucho converted another penalty seven minutes later after Keita fouled Gilberto. Keita started the fightback by scoring in a goalmouth scramble after goalkeeper Carlos Fernandes, barely tested until then, fumbled a corner. Kanoute outjumped his marker to head the second in the 88th minute, Keita volleyed a third at the far post in stoppage time and Mustapha Yatabare completed the incredible fightback by scoring from a rebound after Fernandes had parried a close-range shot.

Turin - Defensive horror shows at three corners saw AC Milan humiliate Juventus 3-0 at Turin’s Stadio Olimpico and all but end their rivals’ Serie A title hopes and leave coach Ciro Ferrara’s job on the line. The victory meant Milan moved to within eight points of leaders Inter Milan with a game in hand and the Milan derby to come in two weeks time. A victory for the rossoneri in that would ensure the champions come under much greater pressure than they have in their previous four title triumphs. Juve are 12 points back and have lost six of their last eight matches in all competitions while they are also out of the Champions League. Fans protested after the second goal and some clashed with police afterwards outside the ground but Ferrara remained defiant. “It’s clear that the 3-0 was a fair result, this is a very difficult time for us,” he admitted. “But I honestly don’t think my job is at risk, I’m totally concentrated on it. It’s not up to me to make decisions, my energies need to be concentrated on the team and trying to overcome this moment. I understand (the fans’) disappointment, it’s understandable because we’re not getting results, it has to be up to us to change these things.”
Alessandro Nesta and a Ronaldinho brace settled the affair but all three goals were due to Juve’s inept defending at corners. Milan coach Leonardo denied the Old Lady of Turin had made life easy for his team, though. “Honestly it was very difficult, especially in the first first half when we needed some time to get organised,” he said. “We struggled but we didn’t give up many chances, we didn’t create a lot but we conceded even less. The second half was perfect, we managed to hold the ball, pass it quickly and we gave Juve problems.” It was an unsurprisingly tentative start from both teams but Juve playmaker Diego tried to spark the game into life on 13 minutes as he cut in from the left and curled a right-foot shot just wide of the far post. However, ‘The Old Lady’ fell behind on 29 minutes after a defensive disaster. Andrea Pirlo’s corner was poor and sent in low to the near
post but Christian Poulsen left it, Felipe Melo missed it, goalkeeper Alex Manninger was caught unawares leaving Nesta, whose marker Zdenek Grygera had stopped, the simple task of tapping home from two yards out at the back post. Juve did belatedly react but it was centre-back Giorgio Chiellini, their best player, whose shot was straight at goalkeeper Dida after his central defensive partner Fabio Cannavaro’s weak effort fell to him. Milan, though, finished the half on a high as Manninger parried Thiago Silva’s long range strike before Ronaldinho’s header from David Beckham’s corner was deflected behind. Juve failed to exert much pressure after the break despite the introduction of Alessandro Del Piero on the hour mark and Chiellini was proving their most dangerous threat from set-pieces, without actually troubling Dida.

But we keep on picking up the specials and trying our best.” Tomorrow’s stage will take the crews another 300km south from Copiapo to La Serena, the last stage in Chile’s Atacama desert.

Although this was not the seven times world champion’s first visit to Mercedes Grand Prix’s base, as he had also visited when finalising his deal to return to Formula 1, this trip marked the start of his serious work with the team. “I have been in the factory in Brackley now for two days and spent the time to get to know the engineers and the structures a bit better, and I am extremely positively surprised about how motivated everybody was,” Schumacher wrote on his personal website. led to renewed media speculation that Juve are lining up Russia coach Guus Hiddink to replace Ferrara. When asked if he had considered resigning, the 42-year-old told Sky TV: “I am not made like that. My way is to try to change things. “I sincerely think my job is not at risk. Of course we are in a negative period but it’s not for me to make the decisions. Any decisions will be accepted.” The former Juve defender took charge for two games at the end of last season after the surprise sacking of Claudio Ranieri and impressed enough to be given the role full time despite his lack of
managerial experience. Juve, still recovering from a demotion for match-fixing in 2006, spent heavily in the close season but Brazilians Diego and Felipe Melo have been big flops so far.
