The phenomenon of fishes’ sudden death in Serangan is being repeated. Since two days ago thousands of Isabela fishes died all of a sudden on the canal of Serangan beach, for exact at Banjar Dukuh, Serangan Village, South Denpasar. According to Bali Post’s study at location on Thursday (10/6), this fish death worries the residents as they are not sure if it is safe to consume the fishes. It is suspected the fishes died because the canal to the beach was closed so the sea water circulation was stopped.

Officers of the U.S. Consulate General met the Chief of Bali Police Insp. Gen. Sutisna, last Wednesday (June 9). The arrival of a group of foreign officials linked to the postponement of President Barack Obama?s visit to Bali. The reason, oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico was assessed to be able to disrupt the stability of the country. It was revealed in the meeting of the party of U.S. Consular General and Chief Sutisna that the plan of visit to Bali in next November 2010 was also unclear. U.S. government envoys coming to Bali were led by Rodney T. Collins from the Regional Security Officer of the U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya. He delivered his apology for the delayed visit of President Obama to Bali. ?The visit of President Obama to Indonesia is postponed because of the problems on environmental pollution. Quality of sanitation of Denpasar City this year still needs improving. The reason, the Adipura trophy becoming the proud icon of the urban sanitation could no longer be maintained by Denpasar Municipality this year. The proof, the achievement of Denpasar winning the 2009 Adipura trophy could not be maintained this year. On the contrary, a number of other small towns in Bali could attain Adipura trophy of their own pride. So, where had the BOS funds transferred directly to the account of each elementary school gone? That was worth investigating. Chairman of Commission IV of Karangasem House (in charge of education), I Gede Suartaka, said it was necessary to oversee the use or management of the BOS funds. According to him, it was easy enough to oversee, just have a look at the condition of the students or simply ask the students whether they got lessons from their teacher every day, whether they got books or anything given by the school?s party. ?If supervision of the committee or community is strict, I think there will be no BOS fund used haphazardly,? he said. Meanwhile, Head of Karangasem House, I Gede Dana, not long ago also claimed to be apprehensive over the condition afflicting the students in Karangasem, mainly the poor students living in rural areas. He said to have got a lot of reports and/or aspirations from the community concerning with the use or management of BOS education funds that should be watched closely. Suddenly, the headmaster asked for a signature of a file to him as the chairman of the committee, whereas he was never invited to a meeting and discussion regarding to the allocation of such BOS funds. In the case of textbook procurement by using BOS fund at the time, education agency was alleged to have called some distributors. Then, all got an allocation, where distributor ?A? would handle the distribution in particular subdistricts, while distributor ?B? in other remaining districts. At a glance, seemingly it had been divided equally. In accordance with the Presidential Decree No. 80 on the procurement of goods and services with a specific budget should be put into a tender and the lowest bidder would become the winner. Allegedly, the book procurement by BOS fund gave an impression to have been divided equally. It was a brief description about the situation in the field. ?If the file is searched and my signature of approval regarding to the management or use of BOS funds at SDN 1 Tenganan in 2007 could be found, it means there is unscrupulous person who had falsified my signature. I am not willing to go afield,? he said. Related to the existence of quite a lot of complaints about the management of BOS funds, after the disclosure of cases on the alleged BOS fraud at SDN 1 Kesimpar, the Head of Karangasem Education Agency, IGN Swetha, said his party would assign the monitoring and evaluation team at least once in three months to supervise schools. At the same time, he appealed the parties concerned to manage the BOS fund more carefully. He said to have just filled the position for one year so he did not to know for sure whether the previous official had performed regular monitoring and evaluation to all schools. ?Probably, it already had. However, it very much depended on the person itself, if he had met the procedures as user manual, certainly the use of BOS fund will not result in any problems,? he said.

Scamming, Two Englishmen Jailed 18 Months Dauh Puri, DenPost
The trial of a suspected scamming case with accused Christopher James Forbes alias Chris Forbes and Angus Knowles Jackson ended last Wednesday (9/6) at Denpasar District Court. The two Englishmen were proven guilty with scamming crime as prosecuted which violated section 378 of the criminal code and section 55 paragraph 1 of the criminal code. The judges led by IGB Komang Wijaya Adi, S.H. gave one year and 6 months (18 months) of jail sentence and reduced while the accused are still arrested. In the decision, the judges are ignoring witness Kadek Avon?s statement. This is because the witness has a husband and wife connection with the accused Chris Forbes and it seems to have taken his side. Although the judges still consider what burdens and what eases. What?s burdening was the action taken by the accused have damaged the image of Bali in the foreign investors? eyes that are going to invest. What eases were the accused were polite during the trial and also that this action taken was not for their enjoyment but for someone else named Agus Setiawan Waworunto who?s still chased by the police.

It started with the two accused and Agus Setiawan Waworunto offered 24 acres land located near Balangan beach, Jimbaran, Kuta to victim Dmitry Chemikov. With this scam, Dmitry was interested and paid 10 percent in advance as much as USD 1.955.000 which was transferred to Agus?s account at Permata Bank. The accused made an order form naming it Asean Estate and Investment and promised to handover the property also guaranteed that the property is free from any burden. Sadly the victim never got the property as it was never sold by its owner and now the land is on confiscation status by the Denpasar District Court. (123)
Luh Desianti, a student of third grader of SDN elementary school located at Kecag Balung, Seraya, Karangasem, commutes several kilometers from her home on the barren hills to school. She should go to school everyday in barefoot with dozens of friends. Condition of this schoolgirl is quite apprehensive. Her white uniform has been crumpled and broken. In order that her only one school uniform could be used, said Desianti, she was forced to stitch the tattered pieces by means of safety pin. When counted, there were 25 pieces of safety pin saving her uniform. So, her only uniform had actually been destroyed due to rupture. ?I was not given pocket money. Instead, my mother gave me banana for snack,? said Desianti, when asked how much money she brought for lunch. Desianti and friends claimed to go to school at 5:00 am Local Time and arrived at home on

BOS funds transferred directly to the account of school was lent by Headmaster of the SDN 1 Kesimpar, the suspect I Komang Putu and treasurer Ni Made Dwi Astiti Puspawati, then from what source did those poor students get money for transportation or textbooks? ?Actually, most of our students are from poor families and only few are the haves belonging to the family of civil servants or Armed Forces/ National Police,? said Astawa. He added that during this time his party served as the administrator of committee at the elementary school was never involved in the management or designation on the use of BOS funds. However, when monitored by Monev Team of the regency and province, both parties had declared the BOS fund at the elementary school had been managed wrongly.

Welcoming Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas to the White House on Wednesday, Obama promised the “full weight” of US diplomacy on the latest crisis and vowed to coax Israelis and Palestinians out of a “dead end” and into direct peace talks. He also unveiled 400 million dollars of US aid for Gaza and the West Bank for housing, education and infrastructure, as part of a US commitment to improve the “day-to-day lives of Palestinians.” The president also called the humanitarian situation “unsustainable” and warned a Palestinian state was the only long-term solution. The White House talks came with the Arab world still livid about the Israeli raid on the aid flotilla on May 31, which killed nine activists, and amid frantic US efforts to stop the uproar derailing peace efforts. Telling Abbas he remained deeply committed to spending personal political capital in the Middle East, Obama said he still believes there could be “significant progress” in the peace process this year. The US leader said it may be possible to take the “tragedy” over the Gaza aid convoy and turn it “into an opportunity to create a situation where lives in Gaza are actually, di-
rectly improved.” Abbas said that the aid package was “positive.” He told Obama in front of reporters the Palestinians were willing to proceed to direct talks with Israel, but only after progress in the current USmediated “proximity” discussions. The Palestinian leader urged the Obama administration to help implement a two-state solution “as quickly as possible.” “The two-state solution is no longer only a Palestinian interest or an Israeli interest or a Middle East interest, but it is also an American interest,” he added on the televised “Charlie Rose” interview show. As Obama seeks to inject new momentum into peace moves, both the White House and the Israeli government said they were trying to finalize arrangements for a visit to Washington by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this month. The Israeli leader had been due here last week, to smooth over tensions that flared during his last visit, but the Gaza crisis forced him to cancel. Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat, who attended the Oval Office meeting, meanwhile said US envoy George Mitchell would go back to the Middle East next week for more proximity
talks. Erakat said Abbas had come to the United States with the message that progress was urgently needed. “Time is of the essence, that’s his message, we need to see genuine movement in the direction of a twostate solution and ending the occupation,” he told AFP. Obama also called on Israel to live up to UN Security Council conditions on probing the flotilla raid, which laid out the need for “credible, international involvement.” “I’ve said to the Israelis directly... it is in Israel’s interest to make sure that everybody knows exactly how this happened so that we don’t see these kinds of events occurring again,” he added. But Israel has rejected any international inquiry into the affair, amid calls for an easing of the three-year blockade of Gaza. Earlier, Netanyahu said he was in talks with “several members of the international community” but added that a probe should not focus on the role of Israeli soldiers in the raid. While stressing Israel had a right to make sure arms were not smuggled into Gaza, Obama said a framework should be hashed out to allow some non-arms shipments to reach the tiny Palestinian coastal enclave. The White House said the aid package for Palestinians would help “increase access to clean drinking water, create jobs, build schools, expand the availability of affordable housing, and address critical health and infrastructure needs.”
Cameron visits Afghanistan, rules out more troops AFP
KABUL (AFP) – British Prime Minister David Cameron Thursday made his first official visit to Afghanistan, hailing 2010 as vital in efforts to fight the Taliban but ruling out the prospect of sending any extra troops. Cameron, whose visit was not announced ahead of time for security reasons, held talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai at the heavily guarded palace in Kabul before the two leaders held a joint news conference. The new British premier declared Afghanistan “the most important foreign policy issue, the most important national security issue for my country”. Britain has around 9,500 troops in Afghanistan, mostly in the south, as part of a 46-nation force. It is the second-biggest contributor to the NATO-led mission after the United States. But Cameron told the news conference: “the issue of more troops is not remotely on the UK agenda”.
It is his first visit to Afghanistan since taking power as head of a coalition government involving his centre-right Conservatives and the centre-left Liberal Democrats last month. Cameron’s new government has faced questions over whether it will follow the same strategy as his predecessor Gordon Brown and increasing public support for troops to come home. An Independent on Sunday/ ComRes survey in April found that 77 percent of those questioned now supported a phased withdrawal and the end of operations within a year, up six percent in five months. A total of 294 British personnel have died in Afghanistan since operations began in the country to topple the Taliban government in October 2001. British Defence Secretary Liam Fox, who visited Afghanistan shortly after the new government took power last month, caused controversy by telling the Times newspaper that he would like British troops to “come back as soon as possible” and re-

Cameron announced an additional 67 million pounds (98 million dollars) for British forces to counter the threat from improvised bombs, which are the biggest killer of Western soldiers in Afghanistan. “I’ve described this year — and the president, I know, agrees — in terms of the NATO mission in Afghanistan as the vital year,” Cameron said. “This is the year when we have to make progress — progress for the sake of the Afghan people, but progress also on behalf of people back at home who want this to work,” he added. His visit to Kabul marks his second face-to-face talks with Karzai, whom he met earlier in London in his first meeting with a foreign leader as premier. Visiting London this week, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Britain was “resolute” in its commitment to the war in Afghanistan but he would not ask London for more troops for the mission.

Man in Brazil jails daughter, has 7 kids with her AP
RIO DE JANEIRO – A man in a remote fishing village in Brazil kept his daughter imprisoned for 12 years, raped her repeatedly and had seven children with her, police said Wednesday. The man is also accused of abusing a young girl he had with his daughter. Police allege that Jose Agostinho Pereira, 54, kept his daughter, now 28, under virtual house arrest in a two-room, thatched-roof hut near a tiny fishing village in northeastern Brazil. An officer who aided in the arrest said the home was located in such a remote, jungle area that the only way to reach it was by using canoes. Authorities said the children appeared to suffer from malnutrition and could barely communicate with others. Most were unclothed. The alleged abuse began when Pereira’s wife left him in 1998, said police inspector Jair Lima de Paiva. Pereira has been in jail since Tuesday in the city of Pinheiro in Maranhao state, about 1,400 miles (2,250 kilometers) north of Rio de Janeiro. Charges have not been filed against him. Under Brazilian law, prosecutors only file charges after police have ended their investigation. It was not immediately known if Pereira had a lawyer. Paiva said Pereira kept his daughter and the children in nearly complete isolation in the countryside near the village

Officers from Pinheiro were sent to the remote area about 10 days ago, where they located Pereira’s house, kept it under observation for a few days and then arrested him. “He confessed to everything,” said a police officer who helped arrest Pereira, speaking on condition of anonymity, as he was not authorized to discuss the case. Pereira’s daughter and the seven children are now under the care of the government’s protective services. It was last year in Austria that Josef Fritzl was found guilty of locking his daughter in a dungeon for 24 years and fathering seven children with her.

The attack occurred in Nadahan village in the Argandab district of Kandahar province, considered the spiritual home of the Taliban, and the focus of an upcoming major U.S. military offensive. THE HAGUE, Netherlands – Two Bosnian Serbs were convicted Thursday of genocide and sentenced to life imprisonment for the 1995 massacre of Muslims in Srebrenica — the harshest judgment ever delivered by the U.N. war crimes tribunal on the Balkan wars. A third Bosnian Serb officer was given a 35-year prison sentence for aiding and abetting genocide. Two others were acquitted of genocide charges but convicted of extermination, murder and persecution, while a final two officers were found guilty of lesser charges of war crimes. It was a dramatic conclusion to the largest trial conducted by the tribunal since it was set up in 1993 to prosecute the worst war crimes offenders even while the fighting was still under way among the ethnic groups in the disintegrating Yugoslavia. The verdict could have an indirect bearing on the trial of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, which began last year following his capture in Belgrade in 2008. Vujadin Popovic and Ljubia Beara, convicted of the worst crime in the war crimes statute, were high-ranking security officers with the Bosnian Serb army that overran Muslim forces and thinly armed U.N. troops in the Srebrenica enclave. Drago Nikolic, convicted of aiding and abetting genocide, was a brigade security commander. All three were in the chain of command under Gen. Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb commander who remains a fugitive 15 years after his indictment. Sentences for the four other army and police officers ranged from four to 19 years. The slaughter of some 8,000 Muslim men was the worst massacre on European soil since World War II. Tens of thousands of civilians were evicted from their homes, in what the U.N. court has called a deliberate attempt to wipe out the Muslim community from that area. The court has convicted only one other person, Gen. Radislav Kristic, of genocide, but his 2001 conviction was overturned on appeal and reduced to aiding and abetting genocide. The judges ruled that Popovic, the chief of security for the Drina Corps, organized and watched the execution of prisoners at a school in Orahovac. He “knew that the intent was not just to kill those who had fallen into the hands of Bosnian Serb forces, but to kill as many as possible,” the judgment said. His “robust participation” showed that he shared the intention of destroying the Muslim community — the key requirement for a genocide conviction. Popovic shook his head in denial as the decision of the three judges was read out in court. Beara coordinated the murder of Muslim prisoners and organized their mass burials, the judgment said. “Beara had a very personal view of the staggering number of victims destined for execution,” it said. He “was intent on destroying a group by killing all the members of it within his reach.”

JAKARTA - Indonesia on Wednesday raised foreign ownership caps in sectors such as agriculture and healthcare in a bid to lure offshore investment and remove legal uncertainty. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono signed a decree intended to clear up doubts about foreign ownership which have hobbled investment across a range of industries, officials said. In particular it will open up the staple food plantation sector for the first time, though foreign holdings were capped at 49 percent of individual companies. “This comes into immediate effect,” Investment Coordinating Board chairman Gita Wirjawan told AFP. “The most significant thing about this is that there is a rule, a regulation,
that tells them (foreign investors) how much they can invest... Everything is clear now.” Indonesia’s expanding middle class, natural resources, low wages, political stability and domestic market of some 240 million people have made it an increasingly attractive destination for foreign investment. But investors complain that they are being held back by red tape, overlapping regulations, corruption and a lack of legal certainty despite Yudhoyono’s promises to remove “investment bottlenecks”. “The aim is to basically provide a clear-cut and simple explanation as to the extent to which foreign investors can invest in any particular sector. This was not the case previously,” Wirjawan said. The ceiling for foreign ownership in hospitals rose to 67 percent nation-
wide compared to 65 percent in certain major provinces only. But the lowering of barriers to foreign investment did not go as far as telecommunication towers, despite strong overseas interest. Actual foreign direct investment dropped around 20 percent in 2009 to 10 billion dollars from a year earlier amid the global economic crisis. The Bin Laden Group from the Middle East last year cancelled a plan to invest around one billion in a food estate project in Papua province because the government planned to cap its share in the project at 49 percent. The opening up of the hospital sector could pave way for some regional healthcare providers, such as Singapore’s Parkway Holdings, to enter the world’s fourth most populous country, analysts said.
JAKARTA - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Thursday acknowledged his country lacked credibility as it seeks billions of dollars in foreign aid to battle climate change. He said Indonesia suffered a “trust deficit” in the international community that was hampering its ability to win backing for initiatives such as a moratorium on deforestation and cuts to greenhouse gas emissions. “This is the reason for reform. We can turn the trust deficit into a trust surplus. Let’s be sure that the institutions in this country are credible,” he said in his opening remarks to a weekly cabinet meeting. Indonesia is one of the top emitters of climate-warming gases blamed for rising global temperatures, largely through deforestation due to illegal logging and clearing for palm oil plantations. Yudhoyono shocked environmentalists and palm planters alike last month when he announced a two-year moratorium on deforestation from 2011 in exchange for a billion dollars in aid from Norway. But no one knows how the moratorium will be enforced in a country where experts say illegal logging is rampant and the government’s figures about defor-
estation rates and forest cover are seen as wildly inaccurate. “All institutions in this country must be credible so that there are no obstacles when we seek cooperation with friendly countries and the international community,” Yudhoyono said, referring to the pact with Norway. “I ask (ministers) not to be discouraged, not to be angry, that frankly the international community does not fully trust the institutions in many developing countries including ours...” Norway will offer aid from 2014 but only as long as Indonesia has made verifiable progress in halting deforestation. Two explicit clips widely circulated online this week appear to show popular singer Nazril Ariel having sex with models and television presenters Luna Maya, his current girlfriend, and Cut Tari, his exgirlfriend. Chief police detective Ito Sumardi said the celebrities would be questioned about how the clips had appeared on the Internet. “We will question them to find out about the clips and how the videos were circulated in public,”

500 personnel assigned to secure opening session of BAF Bali Post
DENPASAR – The opening session of Bali Arts Festival (BAF) will come in next few days. Various preparations had been matured, including the security systems done by the police as the measures taken by the ranks of Denpasar Metro Police and Bali Police. Bali Police Chief Insp. Gen. Sutisna said his party planned to mobilize at least 500 security personnel for the upcoming BAF. The number one man in Bali Police explained the securing would be conducted from the opening session until closing of BAF. During
one month (June 12 to July 10, 2010—ed), police would be on guard at the location of BAF. Obviously, the security pattern would be set up in such a manner. “We’re going to involve 500 personnel,” said Chief Sutisna after his meeting in the meeting room led by the Head of Bali Cultural Services, Ida Sedawa, last Wednesday (Jun 9). It was said, other than police officers, pecalang or customary security taskforce and some residents would also be involved to secure the situation. Moreover, in this 32nd BAF, peddlers would not be allowed to enter into the area of BAF. “In the

Chief Sutisna also added that there had been several security posts provided at location. With this achievement Bali received a trophy and a certificate which was given by Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to Bali’s Governor Made Mangku Pastika in Istana Negara (National Palace) Merdeka Utara Street, Jakarta, last Tuesday 8th June 2010. This award is a first for Bali and with it Governor Made Mangku Pastika said there are important things to be picked. Firstly, with this Bali’s image as tourist destination will be raised. If the tourism management can explain what we have achieved internationally, foreign tourists will increasingly believe Bali so there will be more coming to visit. Secondly, this award should be a challenge to build the environment for the better and to make Bali clean and green. SLHD is a document that provides data and information of the living environment that can be used as a basis to assess and determine the priority issues and includes recommendations for the formulation of policy and planning which assists the government in implementing environmental management and sustainable development mandate. SLHD is evaluated by the Indonesian Republic Environmental Minister Office every year. The central government’s purpose to give this award is to

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia on Thursday unveiled a 69-billion-dollar plan intended to spur growth and attract much-needed foreign investment as it faces increasing competition from regional neighbours. The country is aiming to become a high-income economy by 2020 rather than continuing to rely on its low-cost structure to make it attractive. The 2010-2015 Tenth Malaysia Plan is Prime Minister Najib Razak’s first since taking office last year, where he also set new targets under the five-year blueprint to raise growth and trim a ballooning fiscal deficit. Malaysia is aiming for 6.0 percent growth this year but as the region powers back to health, it is facing competition from Southeast Asian neighbours such as Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam that erode Malaysia’s attractiveness. “The global economic landscape today has changed significantly and Malaysia can no longer depend on a low-cost structure to remain competitive internationally,” Najib said in a speech in parliament. “Globalisation, liberalisation and the emergence of countries such as China, India, Brazil, Russia, the Middle East and countries in the region have
intensified the competition for trade and investment,” he added. The export-dependent country forecast average annual economic growth of 6.0 percent over the five years, and targeted to reduce its fiscal deficit from 5.3 percent of gross domestic product in 2010 to 2.8 percent in 2015. Malaysia’s budget deficit widened to 7.4 percent of GDP in 2009 after the government introduced two stimulus packages worth 67 billion ringgit last year to pump-prime the economy as the downturn dried up demand for its exports. Under the five-year plan worth 230 billion ringgit (69 billion dollars), Najib pledged the government would boost spending on infrastructure and to stimulate private sector investment. He said the government would partner private firms in 63 billion ringgit of “high-impact” projects that include the construction of seven highways and two coal-powered electricity plants. Najib said the government would continue to assist the majority Muslim
Malays and indigenous groups — collectively known as “bumiputra” — but would roll out programmes to enhance their capabilities. The decades-old affirmative action policy which hands bumiputras privileges in housing, education and business has been criticised as uncompetitive and improperly benefiting the elites. Economist Yeah Kim Leng said the government was on the right track but warned that the biggest challenge it faces is to regain investor confidence. “The other challenge will be to reduce the fiscal deficit while still spending given the adverse global environment and in carrying out government plans for privatisation,” the economist at ratings agency RAM Holdings told AFP. Malaysia is one of Asia’s largest importers of labour with an estimated 1.9 million migrant workforce, and Najib said the government also aimed to improve the quality of the workforce and reduce its dependence on foreign workers.
FRANKFURT - European Central Bank governors meeting here Thursday will be faced with the eurozone’s latest crisis, a threat of banks being frozen out of crucial interbank finance markets. That could spell trouble for Spain, a major European economy, and reinforce market sentiment now oriented against most of the bloc’s 16 member countries. Concern over potential fall-out from the crisis was voiced Wednesday by the US Federal Reserve and the International Monetary Fund, but Russian President Vladimir Putin said he still believed in the euro. In Frankfurt, the ECB will undoubtedly leave its main interest rate at a record low of 1.0 percent but might resume unlimited sixmonth loans to commercial banks that some fear are now dependent on central bank cash. Concern over Spanish banks exposed to huge levels of private debt has dried up lending from other banks, the daily Cinco Dias reported on Wednesday. It quoted the manager of an unnamed medium-sized bank as saying that “no foreign institution will finance us on the interbank market,” a situation like that following the collapse of US investment bank Lehman Brothers in 2008. The ECB has done all it can to ensure no banks or eurozone members default on their debts, but investor sentiment has none-
theless turned into a stiff headwind and driven the euro lower against other major currencies. Europe’s single currency traded for around 1.20 dollars on Wednesday, about 20 percent below its level late last year. Eurozone banks parked a record 364.59 billion euros (435.38 billion dollars) with the ECB overnight Tuesday meanwhile, rather than lend the funds to each other. When ECB president JeanClaude Trichet speaks to media after the governing council meeting, analysts will want to hear more about the bank’s controversial decision to buy debt issued by countries like Greece, Ireland and Portugal. “Since the last meeting on 6 May, the euro sovereign debt crisis entered a new stage,” said Natixis economist Cedric Thellier, while others expressed doubt about whether the ECB programme will manage to rein in borrowing costs. One high-profile ECB governor, German Axel Weber, is known to have opposed the move and has stressed publicly the debt purchases should not exceed “a tightly capped limit.” Since then, investors have given a heavy preference to German bonds and even France and Italy have seen rates on theirs begin to rise. Finally, the ECB is to unveil its latest staff forecasts for eurozone growth and inflation. The most significant change expected is a slight decline in growth estimates for 2011 owing to austerity programmes being drawn up across Europe.

BEIJING - China’s trade surplus soared in May from the previous month on strong demand for Chinese-made clothes and electronics, which analysts say could increase pressure on Beijing to let its currency strengthen. The data came after US lawmakers on Wednesday vowed to launch legislative action in two weeks to punish China for refusing to revalue the yuan, claiming the currency is undervalued and gives the nation an unfair trade advantage. China posted a trade surplus of 19.53 billion dollars in May, compared with a trade surplus of 1.68 billion dollars in April and a
deficit posted in March — the first in six years. Exports totalled 131.8 billion dollars in May, up 48.5 percent from the same month a year earlier, customs said. Imports gained 48.3 percent year-on-year to 112.2 billion dollars. “Strong export growth and a sharp pick-up in China’s trade surplus will not go unnoticed in Washington,” said Brian Jackson, a senior analyst at Royal Bank of Canada in Hong Kong. “With US unemployment still close to 10 percent and Chinese exports now growing at a rate of almost 50 percent, it is likely that the rhetoric on this issue coming out of Washington will soon get more heated.”

NEW YORK – The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Evita is returning to Broadway in 2012 with Argentine actress Elena Roger starring as Eva Peron and pop star Ricky Martin in the role of “Che” Guevara, the producers said Wednesday. The theatre where the musical about the late Argentine first lady will play has not yet been lined up however, Hal Luftig and Scott Sanders said in a statement. Roger will be coming back to the role she won raves for in London’s West End in 2006. “It is very exciting to bring this new production of Evita to Broadway with an Argentine woman in the title role for the
very first time,” director Michael Grandage said. “With Ricky Martin joining the company, we now have an opportunity to make the production even more authentic,” Grandage said of the Puerto Rican singer and actor who will play the Argentina-born Guevara who went on to become a hero of Cuba’s revolution.

PROVO, Utah – A spokesman for Larry King said the talk-show host’s wife is recovering after an apparent prescription drug overdose last month in Utah. Emergency medical workers were called to Shawn King’s home in Provo on May 28. Her father dialed 911 after finding the 50-yearold woman in her bed, breathing but not responding when he tried to wake her, according to a transcript of the emergency call, which was released through an open-records request Wednesday. Engemann told the dispatcher that he thought she may have taken too much medication for anxiety or depression. Officers who responded to the call found several prescription bottles, including Ambien and anti-anxiety medication, that had been filled within 10 days but were empty, according to a police report. It also said there was a handwritten note that indicated she had taken the pills intentionally. Another note expressed Shawn King’s desire to be buried in Utah, police said. The report did not include any mention of why Shawn King may have wanted to harm herself.
Engemann had told the dispatcher that he did not suspect it was a suicide attempt. The Kings filed for divorce in April, but Larry King released a statement through his spokesman, Howard Rubenstein, saying “reports that we have fought are absolutely false.” Shawn King is Larry King’s seventh wife. The couple has been married since 1997 and has two sons. “Our marriage is still together, and I am staying very close to our children, who we love immensely,” Larry King said. “We shall go through this difficult time intact as a family.”

Oldest leather shoe steps out after 5,500 years Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON – About 5,500 years ago someone in the mountains of Armenia put his best foot forward in what is now the oldest leather shoe ever found. It’ll never be confused with a penny loafer or a track shoe, but the well-preserved footwear was made of a single piece of leather, laced up the front and back, researchers reported Wednesday in PLoS One, a journal of the Public Library of Science. Worn and shaped by the wearer’s right foot, the shoe was found in a cave along with other evidence of human occupation. The shoe had been stuffed with grass, which dated to the same time as the leather of the shoe — between 5,637 and 5,387 years ago. “This is great luck,” enthused archaeologist Ron Pinhasi of University College Cork in Cork, Ireland, who led the research team. “We normally only find broken pots, but we have very little information about the day-to-day activity” of these ancient people. “What did they eat? What did they do? What did they wear? This is a chance to see this ... it gives us a real glimpse into society,” he said in a telephone interview. Previously the oldest leather shoe discovered in Europe or Asia was on the famous Otzi, the “Iceman” found frozen in the Alps a few years ago and now preserved in Italy. Otzi has been dated to 5,375 and 5,128 years ago, a few hundred years more recent than the Armenian shoe. Otzi’s shoes were made of deer and bear leather held together by a leather strap. The Armenian shoe appears to be made of cowhide, Pinhasi said. Older sandals have been found in a cave in Missouri, but those were made of fiber rather than leather. The shoe found in what is now Armenia was found in a pit, along with a broken pot and some wild goat horns. But Pinhasi doesn’t think it was thrown away. There was discarded material that had been tossed outside the cave, while this pit was inside in the living area. And while the shoe had been worn, it wasn’t worn out. It’s not clear if the grass that filled the shoe was intended as a lining or insulation, or to maintain the shape of the shoe when it was stored, according to the researchers. Yet when Will Thomas heard about an advance against prostate cancer, he wanted to know just one thing: “Is it a cure?” “I see billions and billions done on research, and it’s all for treatment,” said the Alabama man who has several friends with the disease. “When will they cure it?” Many people share his frustration. The top achievements reported at the American Society of Clinical Oncology added an average of just two to six months of life. One pricey drug made headlines merely for delaying the time until ovarian cancer got worse. Progress has always been slow for cancer treatment. New therapies are tested on people who are so sick and out of options that any extension of life is considered a success. A cure is not usually possible. But some of the victories reported this week against breast and prostate cancer, leukemia and the deadly skin cancer called melanoma may be larger than they appear. These trends offer reason for optimism: Newer drugs seem to be making a bigger difference for small, specific groups of patients, as companies develop treatments that more precisely target genes behind subtypes of cancer. Pfizer Inc. rushed into late-stage testing one such drug: crizotinib, which is aimed at only 4 percent of lung cancer patients. More than 90 percent of them responded to the drug in initial tests. High response rates also have been reported for other novel drugs for melanoma and breast cancer driven by certain genes. schools and parents “makes a lot of sense.” “Citizenship online and offline needs to be a part of the child’s life,” she said. “It needs to be taught at school and at home — it’s not just a digital thing.” Child safety advocate Parry Aftab also welcomed the program, and said it’s important for parents not to be scared of technology but to use it to their advantage to communicate with their kids. “It’s not about turning it off any more, it’s not about scare tactics,” Aftab said. “It’s all about teaching our kids the skills they need to survive in this digital world.”

CAPE TOWN – Former champions France go into their opening World Cup game against Uruguay in Cape Town on Friday battling a salvo of criticism, with nothing but victory enough to satisfy the sceptics. Raymond Domenech’s team have been in underwhelming form, losing 1-0 to China in a warm-up match last week, which followed a 2-1 win over Costa Rica and a 1-1 draw with Tunisia. Since arriving in South Africa, they have adopted a siege-like mentality at their luxury five-star resort to focus on the job in hand, training mostly behind closed doors. This has not gone down well with an irate French media, while Sports Minister Rama Yade caused a stir when she said the team should have shown some “decency” during hard economic times by not choosing such swanky accommodation. Domenech, who is widely disliked in France and will be re-
placed by former skipper Laurent Blanc after the tournament, has played down his squad’s troubled build-up. “To lose against China in our final build-up game hardly pleases me but at the end of the day it remains a preparation match,” he said. “Now we get down to the real thing.” The fact that France are here at all still irks some after Thierry Henry’s outrageous handball played such a pivotal role in their play-off victory over Ireland. If that wasn’t enough, the French team was then rocked by a sex scandal linking members of the team, including star player Franck Ribery, to an under-age call-girl. The 1998 champion’s consolation is that they are in a relatively easy group that also includes hosts South
Africa and Mexico. With Patrick Vieira failing to make the squad, France’s lone 1998 survivor is Henry, although the veteran Barcelona striker is likely to be used as a super-sub. William Gallas and Patrick Evra will lead at the back with Jeremy Toulalan and Abou Diaby shoring up midfield. The emergence of Yoann Gourcuff, the talent of Ribery and the rejuvenation of Nicolas Anelka have given the coach a variety of options in attack, where Andre-Pierre Gignac and Florent Malouda will hope to feature. For the Uruguayans, it is another chance to relive their glory days. They collected the 1930 World Cup and repeated the feat in 1950, but since then have rarely made an impact at the global showpiece.
JOHANNESBURG – There are times that “Grumpy” would be more appropriate than “Dopey” for Brazil coach Dunga. Dunga was nicknamed after the dwarf in “Snow White” because his uncle didn’t think he would grow very tall. But his moody tenure as Brazil’s coach sometimes makes him more like the less-friendly Disney character. Dunga arrived at the World Cup on the defensive, bristling at questions thrown at him by the hundreds of journalists in Brazil’s training camp in South Africa. “There are 300 journalists here hoping that we lose just so they can say later that they were right,” Dunga said in one of his first press conferences in South Africa. A former defensive midfielder known for his toughness on and off the field, Dunga was heavily criticized by fans and local media when he was appointed to lead Brazil after the 2006 World Cup despite never coaching at any level before. Many said Dunga was just a temporary choice until a better coach could be signed. The criticism continued even after victories, and the straightforward Dunga never tried to hide that he was not happy with it. “Don’t think I have anything against journalists,” he said. “Anyone can ask whatever they want, but they have to be prepared because I have the right to say whatever I want too. It’s my temper, for good or for bad. I will say what I think.” Many were concerned at Dunga’s defensive emphasis, even as the team
achieved significant results, including the 2007 Copa America and the 2009 Confederations Cup titles. Those achievements gained won over many supporters in Brazil, but there were still some who continued to doubt him, especially after he omitted from his World Cup squad stars such as Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Adriano. “I have to deal with that, even when we win,” Dunga said. “If it isn’t about the players I pick, it’s because I don’t know how to speak Portuguese correctly. And if it isn’t that, then it’s about my clothing or something else. Sometimes they even attack my family to see if they can get to me, but it’s going to be hard.” Dunga insists he is not concerned with his image in Brazil. “I can’t worry about what people are talking about,” Dunga said. “I have to focus on my work. Everything I’m doing it is for the good of the national team. What matters is if I can make a decision and be able to sleep with it at night.” Dunga’s image problems emerged in his playing days. His name has been always associated with the lackluster Brazilian team that fell to Argentina in the round of 16 of the 1990 World Cup in Italy — a period which became negatively known as the “Dunga Era.” And even after Dunga captained Brazil to the 1994 World Cup title in the United States, many complained that that team was defensive and boring. Dunga and the team led by coach Carlos Alberto Parreira were constantly criticized, and when Dunga lifted the trophy, he let out an expletive that marked his career as much as his performances on the field.

Nadal shows no sign of Paris hangover at Queen’s Agence France Presse
LONDON – Rafael Nadal showed no signs of a hangover from his French Open triumph as the Spaniard defeated Marcos Daniel 6-2, 6-2 in the second round at Queen’s Club here on Wednesday. Nadal underlined his dominance on clay with a fifth Roland Garros crown in Paris on Sunday, but his celebrations must have been fairly muted judging by this ruthless demolition of Daniel at the pre-Wimbledon warmup event. Just three days after that final victory over Robin Soderling, which lifted Nadal into first place in the ATP world rankings, the 24-year-old, who received a first-round bye here, was back in action under grey skies in west London. Severe tendinitis in both knees last year robbed Nadal of the chance to defend the Queen’s and Wimbledon titles he won in 2008, so this was his first competitive match on grass since he defeated Roger Federer in one of the All England Club’s greatest finals two years ago. With his injury problems behind him, Nadal has been revitalised over the last few months and he swept through the claycourt season in imperious fashion, winning titles in Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid before his latest French Open success. He reeled off 22 successive victories during that run and Daniel, a Bra-
zilian ranked 112th and making his first appearance at Queen’s, was no match for the top seed as he extended the winning sequence to 23. Nadal took no time at all to find his feet again on grass as he unleashed two ferocious winners from the back of the court to break in Daniel’s first service game. The Spaniard was completely in control after that as he cruised through the first set. A rain shower halted Nadal’s progess early in the second set but he quickly delivered the knockout blow after the resumption as he broke Daniel to take a 4-2 lead. That shattered the Brazilian’s resolve and Nadal’s blistering forehand winner secured a meeting with Denis Istomin, the Uzbek 16th seed, who defeated Jamaica’s Dustin Brown 7-6 (9/7), 6-4 in the second round. Nadal admitted he was relieved to be able to have got straight back into the winning routine after a draining two weeks in Paris. “After the final, doing press, doing a little bit of celebration and then coming back to London, I was really tired on Tuesday so I practised very bad,” Nadal said.
Woods to play in Ireland pro-am next month Associated Press Writer
LIMERICK, Ireland – Tiger Woods will play his first tournament outside of the United States this year at a charity pro-am in Ireland. Tournament officials say Woods has agreed to play July 5-6 in the event organized by Irish businessman and racehorse owner J.P.
McManus. The 36-hole pro-am will be held at Adare Manor, a former Irish Open venue, the week before the British Open at St. Andrews. Woods said in a statement released by organizers that because of his own foundation he understands “the importance and necessity of raising funds to help deserving individuals.”

Avery Johnson agrees to coach Nets Associated Press Writer
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Avery Johnson says he has agreed to become the coach of the New Jersey Nets, the NBA’s worst team. In a text message to The Associated Press on Wednesday, Johnson said he thinks the Nets will announce the deal Thursday. Nets president and general manager Rod Thorn did not immediately respond when asked to comment on Johnson’s text. In an earlier e-mail to the AP, he said he “will have something to say” Thursday. The current ESPN analyst coached Dallas for three-plus seasons, going 194-70 in the regular season and 23-24 in the playoffs. He guided the Mavs to the NBA finals in 2006, but was fired after a first-round playoff series loss to New Orleans in 2008. Johnson will take over a team that posted a league worst 12-70 record and set a league-record opening the season with 18 straight losses. The miserable start led to the firing of coach Lawrence Frank after 16 games. Outgoing general manager Kiki Vandeweghe served as the interim coach for the majority of the franchise’s worst season and only the fifth 70-loss season in NBA history. The Nets threatened to break the Philadelphia 76ers’ league record for fewest wins in a season — nine — until a late run got them over the hump. The 76ers set the record in 1972-73. Johnson is a proven winner, and his arrival in New Jersey will reunite him with point guard Devin Harris, who was shipped to New Jersey in the deal that sent Jason Kidd to the Mavericks. The Nets also have a young talented center in Brook Lopez, two guards with tons of potential, Terrence Williams and
Courtney Lee, and high hopes for Chinese Olympian Yi Jianlian. New Jersey also has the third pick in this month’s draft. Johnson should also benefit working with new Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov. The Russian billionaire has said he will open his wallet in free agency, and the Nets have more than $23 million to spend on a talent pool that might include LeBron James. Johnson, who met with Thorn early
in the coaching search, emerged as the leading contender after former Knicks and Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy turned down overtures from Thorn and Boston Celtics assistant coach Tom Thibodeau opted to take the Chicago Bulls’ head coaching job. Only a matter of days after Mark Webber had pledged his immediate future to Red Bull Racing for a fifth consecutive campaign in F1 in 2011, the man the Australian was briefly tipped to replace at Ferrari next year – Felipe Massa – has similarly elected to stay put, with the announcement that the Brazilian has re-signed for the Scuderia until the end of 2012. Massa’s relationship with Ferrari began back in 2003, when he was recruited by the Prancing Horse as a test driver following a mixed maiden campaign in the top flight with SauberPetronas, during which flashes of promise had been interspersed with a number of off-piste moments. After another season at Sauber in 2004, the Paulista returned to Maranello in 2005, and since then he has never left. During that time, the 29-year-old has notched up eleven grand prix victories and finished as runner-up in the 2008 F1 World Championship to Lewis Hamilton – though for about ten seconds after taking the chequered flag for a hugely popular victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, Massa believed he had clinched the crown, until his McLaren-Mercedes rival’s lastditch overtake of Timo Glock in an ailing Toyota snatched it away from him again. If 2008 was the highlight, then 2009 was inarguably the nadir, with a life and sight-threatening accident during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix last summer causing some to won-
der if he would ever race again, let alone win again. However, on his return in the curtain-raising 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix at Sakhir, Massa stunned by outqualifying new team-mate – and double world champion – Fernando Alonso. Even if his subsequent performances have admittedly been rather patchier, Ferrari has clearly seen enough to retain his services for at least a further two years – and is confident that the controversial pit-lane incident between Massa and Alonso in the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai back in April will not lead to any future tensions or difficulties between the two team-mates. “I am happy to be given the opportunity to drive for Ferrari for a further two seasons,” Massa enthused. “Throughout my entire F1 career, I have always raced with an engine made in Maranello and it is a matter of pride for me to be able to continue working with a team that I regard as a second family.” From 69 grands prix for Ferrari, Massa has mounted the podium on no fewer than 30 occasions, finished inside the points 51 times and tallied 15 pole positions, twelve fastest laps and 360 points. Team principal Stefano Domenicali revealed his delight at having secured his services for another two campaigns. “Felipe has been part of Ferrari for almost a decade and together with us, he has grown as a driver and as a man, going through some very difficult times as well as giving us moments of great happiness,” remarked the Italian.
