Behind the story on the drowning of two teenagers from Bangli town, Ketut Wirajaya and Febri Kristian Aduardo due to be drifted by waves, last Saturday (Jun 5), at Siyut Beach located in Siyut Hamlet, Tulikup Village, Gianyar Regency retained a history forgotten by society of Gianyar and Bali in general. Since the Dutch colonial era, Siyut Beach has become a strategic area. What does it look like? Among the coastal areas in Gianyar Regency, Siyut Beach is one of the beaches located at the easternmost coast, denoting the frontier between Gianyar and Klungkung Regency. Frontier area of both regencies is also separated by a river whose water flows swiftly enough. The beach having quite vicious wave condition and no rocky stones has undergone severe erosion since around 1975. This is based on the removal of leper hospital existing on the Siyut seashore, Temesi Village to Tangtu region, Denpasar. I Gusti Ngurah Wira Suteja, a resident of Siyut Village, Tulikup, Gianyar, revealed the hospital that was locally known as ?chamber? indeed had a story as a settlement of the lepers built by Dutch government. At that
location, there was a house equipped with a village hall, trinity village temple, graveyard and its merajapati shrine. Any residential occupant who died at the settlement would be made a funeral rite directly at the cemetery of Leper Hospital, he explained. The hospital currently does no longer exist. Wira Suteja said that the settlement of the lepers was 1 km from the current shoreline. Obviously, the hospital had gone on account of being swallowed by waves or abrasion after the removal carried out in 1975. As a matter of fact, abrasion case has occurred in the coastal region of Gianyar since that year, and up to these days it remains to happen. Before the hoarding performed by investors, the condition of Siyut coastal area was very
poor. River streams and wave lunges have eroded the land belonging to local community. In this regard, Regency Government gave up in tackling the increasingly ferocious abrasion. Ultimately, an investor having the land on the edge of the beach did a landfill by approval of local government. Now, the Siyut Beach area turns more tranquil than ever before. Although it was a residential area of the lepers along with their graveyard as final resting place, now it looks ordinary. The region is already buffeted by abrasion and no single fact or evidence is left from the existence of such Leper Hospital. Only steep waves remain visible so that people who would like to take a bath should be immensely careful. (dar)

The desire of Klungkung Regency to obtain disaster financial assistance worth IDR 7 billion from the central government through the state budget in 2010 is estimated not to be materialized. Because, until now Klungkung Regency has no regional agency as regional apparatus unit (SKPD) like the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). In fact, based on Act No. 24/ 2007 concerning with disaster management, regional government is required to have BNPB with officials having the rank being equal to Regional Secretary. It was recognized by the Head of Klungkung Office of National Union and Public Protection (Kesbanglinmas), Gede Kesumajaya, when asked for his confirmation, last Monday (Jun 7). Admittedly, Klungkung very much needed such disaster funds considering Klungkung was one of the disaster prone areas. In relation to the fund of IDR 7 billion proposed to central government, among others, would be intended for rehabilitation of irrigation networks, including the handling of coastal erosion. ?On that account, we always propose the disaster fund to central government. At the same time, regional budget also allocates it each year,? said Kesumajaya. He mentioned, in order the proposed disaster funds to central government could be realized, Klungkung Government was preparing the establishment
of an institution (BNPB?ed). The institution would involve relevant agencies such as regional secretary, legal division and some others. Establishment of the institution needed careful assessment as it related to human resources and supporting infrastructure. It was said the importance of establishing such institution aimed at facilitating the withdrawal of fund if central government provided disaster fund that should be made through a separate account with its own management as well. It did not include in the regional budget that was later on used globally. ?Indeed, the result of our proposal is unclear. Hence, in the year 2010 through the regional budget of Klungkung we remain to allocate funds for disaster management worth IDR 500 million. Although considered wasteful because the funds were unused, we keep on allocating it because no one could predict when disaster happens,? he added. He added, the number was much smaller than the budget in 2009 where at that time disaster fund was allocated as much as IDR 1 billion. However, no single amount was withdrawn because there were no suitable disasters in Klungkung Regency meeting the criteria for the disbursement of the fund. ?The recent disasters were categorized into the small ones so that they were only assisted with the funding of social assistance,? he said. Documentary film posing a new material presented in the 32nd Bali Arts Festival (BAF), Gianyar Regency will feature two documentary films. They consist of documentary film on Kebo Iwa and Performance of Gianyar Regency. These two works will be screened in the BAF event. Head of Gianyar Cultural Services, Cokorda Rai Widiarsa P., last Monday (Jun 7), admitted that the two documentary films that would be performed had been made by one of the art communities existing in Gianyar Regency. Selection of Kebo Iwa as the title was inspired by his persona as a governor of Amangkubumi originated in Blahbatuh who was willing to make sacrifices for the sake of archipelagic unification. In addition, Kebo Iwa featured was also the mascot
of Gianyar Regency. In the 32nd Bali Arts Festival (BAF), Gianyar will get involved in 19 activities. Among them, there are nine compulsory and ten additional activities. In compulsory activities Gianyar will participate in the gong kebyar of children, adolescent and women category. Meanwhile, there are four other activities of womanhood, parade and industry exhibitions. In addition, Gianyar Regency should also fill some additional activities in the event. For the annual cultural fiesta, Gianyar is almost fully abounded with cultural calendar of events. Cok Rai admitted, other than making preparation for the appearance of Gianyar in this BAF, the Gianyar Regency itself would also hold two simultaneous events at the end of this June, namely the Gianyar Extravaganza and Ubud Festival. Ni Wayan Sukantari, 22, a resident who lives on Jalan Nuansa Utama Selatan Gang 18 No. 3 Jimbaran, South Kuta, Badung, suffered from a bad luck, last Friday (Jun 4). When she was passing through Jalan Pulau Buru, near the bridge of Pekambingan, Denpasar, she was snatched by criminal. A bag containing some valuables was successfully taken away. Information in the police, last Monday (Jun 7), explained that the action took place when the victim would like to go home. Victim came on the scene by motorcycle. Well, as soon as passing on the scene, apparently the passage of victim was dogged by the snatcher. Perpetrator was also riding a
motorcycle, but his identity was unknown. Incidentally, the atmosphere on the scene was truly quiet, and it was taken advantage by perpetrator. Motorcycle of victim was approached and then snatched her bag by force. ?The mugging incident took place so quickly. Without the knowledge of the victim, her bag was directly seized. As consequence, victim was shocked and tried to defend her possession. However, the perpetrator eventually managed to take it away,? he said. The contents of her bag were Nexian handphone, driving license C, Bank Mandiri ATM card, car insurance, jade bracelet and cash worth IDR 950,000. One of the guests from Alilla Villa, located at Banjar Dukuh, Kelanting Village, Kerambitan, reported has lost money. After being investigated through, the robber was someone from the inside, a security named Dewa Putu Karisma (21). The security was suspected to have stolen the Swiss guest?s money because of wanting to get money without any hard work. The incident happened quite long on Friday (4/6) at 2.30 pm wita. Around 5.30 pm wita, Chief Security I Gede Putu Darma Wiasa got a call from the supervisor about stolen guest?s money. Monica, the Swiss guest, told that she had lost some foreign money that was left at room 1/4. Wiasa then tried to find out what happened. Another security, Komang
Suaba, admitted having saw Dewa Putu Karisma coming out from room 1/4. Dewa Karisma was then called abruptly. At first, Karisma did not admit anything but after a long interrogation, he admitted that he have stolen the Swiss guest?s money. Karisma admitted it?s easy to go in because the door to the room was not locked while Monica had gone out from the villa to enjoy the beach?s beauty.

While going in a steep turning point, the driver who brought Iskandar and Mayur as well could not control the bike and so it hit a garden fence. The driver died on location as they were not wearing helmets. The other two had minor injuries. Bridge It No Go Plans to Build a Bali Bridge Between Sanur and Tanjung Benoa Hits a Ministerial Snag.Continuing efforts to build a bridge linking Sanur-Serangan Island-Tanjung Benoa have been delivered a set back due to a regulation issued by the Minister of Transportation, Freddy Numberi, stipulating that the minimum under-bridge clearance for the proposed cross-channel span is 44 meters. Current plans and costings for the Bali project only provide for a clearance of 33 meters. Quoted in the Bali Post, the Chairman of Commission II of Bali’s Provincial House of Representatives, Putu Agus Suradyana, said, “this means the Minister has defeated the project.” While refusing to assign any hidden motives for the Minister’s ruling, Suradyana said he will seek further clarification from the Minister’s office. “A clearance of 44 meters beneath to proposed Tanjung Benoa – Serangan bridge
is not in conformance with the master plan of the Benoa Port supported by the governor’s letter of January 21, 2008, which also includes technical considerations,” explained the legislator. The Bali head of the Transportation Department, Made Santa, admitted that the realization of the “short-cut” bridge connection Denpasar with Tanjung Benoa presents many challenges in trying to balance various competing interests. On the one hand, the bridge can not be so high as to interfere with the flight course of planes taking off and landing at Ngurah Rai International airport. On the other hand, the bridge must provide an under-bridge leeway sufficient to permit handling ships of up to 20,000 gross tons docking at the Benoa port. In order to address this impasse, the provincial government is undertaking the construction of a cruise ship port at Tanah Ampo on Bali’s East Coast at Karangasem.

Police: Dutchman confesses to killing Lima woman Associated Press Writer
LIMA, Peru – Dutchman Joran Van der Sloot, long the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of a U.S. teen in Aruba, has confessed to killing a young Peruvian woman in his Lima hotel room last week, a police spokesman said. Peru’s chief police spokesman, Col. Abel Gamarra, told The Associated Press that Van der Sloot admitted under police questioning Monday that he killed 21-year-old Stephany Flores on May 30. The broadcaster America Television reported that Van der Sloot killed Flores in a rage after learning she had looked up information about his past on his laptop. It said it had access to details of the confession but did not cite its source. Gamarra would not provide details of the confession. Nor would the chief of Peru’s criminal police, Gen. Cesar Guardia, when the AP reached him by telephone. Guardia said only police director Gen. Miguel Hidalgo could authorize the information to be divulged. Hidalgo’s cell phone rang unanswered. Asked about the Van der Sloot
confession, a brother of the victim, Enrique Flores, told the AP “we are not going to make any comment. This is in the hands of the police, of the justice system.” Van der Sloot’s confession came on his third full day in Peruvian police custody, on the eve of a planned trip to the hotel in which he was to participate in a reconstruction of the events leading to Flores’ slaying, Gamarra said. Flores, a business student, was found beaten to death, her neck broken, in the 22-year-old Dutchman’s hotel room. Police said the two met playing poker at a casino. Police released video on Saturday from hotel security cameras that shows the two entering Van der Sloot’s hotel room together at 5 a.m. Saturday and Van der Sloot leaving alone four hours later with his bags. Police say Van der Sloot left the hotel briefly at 8:10 a.m., returning to the room with two cups of coffee and bread purchased across the street at a supermarket. Gamarra said the case would now be turned over to prosecutors to present formal charges and Van der Sloot will be assigned to a prison while he awaits trial.

The mugs were destroyed Monday after a customer pointed out the president’s name had been misspelt “Barrack.” A government official, who declined to be named citing departmental policy, said the error had been made by an official who ordered the mugs from a manufacturer. Alan Thompson, head of the Department of Parliamentary Ser-
vices, told The Canberra Times newspaper the error was embarrassing. “He’s a very important head of state. We take a lot of pride welcoming people like President Obama and we won’t be having them on sale,” Thompson was quoted as saying Tuesday. Japan’s new PM says he’ll honor base deal with US TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s incoming government named its new Cabinet on Tuesday, keeping core members in place to address the country’s deep economic and foreign policy issues but adding several fresh faces to win back voters ahead of upcoming elections. Prime Minister-elect Naoto Kan, whose administration will officially be sworn in Tuesday evening, chose to maintain the bulk of the existing Cabinet, including the country’s powerful foreign and defense ministers. But he also added some new, younger members as he seeks favor with voters angered by the former government’s broken campaign promises and financial scandals. “With freshness and professionalism, we would like to create a government that is thoroughly clean and accountable,” said new Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihito Sengoku. Among the new picks are Renho, a well-known celebrity and former television announcer who was featured in the media as she grilled bureaucrats in public budget debates last year. The former model, who at 42 will be the youngest member of the new Cabinet, goes by one name and will be minister of administrative reforms. Kan, who previously served as finance minister, will be replaced by former subordinate Yoshihiko Noda, who favors financial discipline and is against heavy public spending or more borrowing by Tokyo. Noda must take the lead in crafting the government’s new strategy
on fiscal reform, which is expected by the end of this month. 12 dead, scores missing in Bangladesh ferry accident AFP
DHAKA (AFP) – At least 12 people, including 10 children, drowned and scores more were missing after a packed ferry capsized in northeastern Bangladesh on Tuesday, officials said. The accident happened in Sunamganj district, about 140 kilometres (85 miles) north of the capital Dhaka, district administrator Kamrul Alam told AFP. “The bodies of six schoolgirls, four small children and two women have been recovered so far,” Alam said, adding that the ferry was overloaded. He said a search-and-rescue operation was under way, with many of the ferry’s 60 to 70 passengers still missing. About 40 children on board the small passenger ferry were on their way to school, said district police chief Golam Kibria. “Their relatives are gathering on the banks of the river now, they are very concerned,” he told AFP. Some adult men on the small, single-deck vessel managed to swim to shore, he said. Five people rescued from the boat had been sent to the local hospital after nearly drowning during the accident, he added. Boat and ferry accidents due to lax safety standards and overloading are common in Bangladesh, which is criss-crossed by 230 rivers. At least 16 people died last month in a boat accident after an overloaded ferry sank in Kishorganj district.

Australian PM could lose looming election: polls Reuters
CANBERRA (Reuters) – Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd could lose elections later this year after a dramatic fall in support, two new opinion polls found on Monday, putting pressure on the government to reach a deal on its new mining tax. Support for the ruling Labour government dropped three points in a month to 47 percent on a twoparty basis, a Nielsen poll in Fairfax newspapers found, showing Rudd was losing votes as he pushes for a controversial 40 percent tax on mining profits. Tony Abbott’s conservative opposition was on a election winning 53 percent, the poll found, although the Greens were big winners in the drop in primary support for the government, up two points in the month to 15 percent. “The mining tax is bleeding Labour nationally, not just in affected areas,” Age newspaper political editor Michelle Grattan wrote. “The results emphasize the government’s need to sort out its final position soon, but Rudd has been in no hurry.” Voters also appeared to back the opposition’s hardline stance
on asylum seekers, while there was also dissatisfaction with the government’s scrapping of a carbon emissions scheme. Financial markets have so far shown little reaction to polls showing a slide in support for Rudd. Sydney’s benchmarket share index was down around 3 percent and the Australian dollar was also under pressure on Monday, but this was linked mainly to concerns over the global economy and European debt worries. The next election is likely around October this year, and will be partly fought over the new mining tax, which underpins Rudd’s strategy to boost retirement incomes and wipe out the fiscal deficit by 2012/13. There are unlikely to be major differences on many core economic policies, but the opposition has promised to abandon the tax if it wins office, while also refusing to consider an emissions trading program. A second poll, a Newspoll commissioned by the mining industry and published in the Australian newspaper, was conducted in nine key marginal seats, and found the mining tax could cost Rudd the next election.
It found 48 percent opposed the mining tax, while only 28 percent were in favor, while almost one in three said they were less likely to vote for Labour because of the tax. The Nielsen poll found despite the fall in government support, Rudd remains preferred prime minister with 49 percent support, compared to 39 percent for Tony Abbott. Pollster John Stirton said the results appeared to signal a protest vote against Rudd, but a protest that is now big enough to tip Labour out of office if it continued through to election day. Rudd acknowledged the results on Monday and said he now needed to work harder to explain his policies, although he stood firm on his plan for the mining tax, which is due to start in July 2012. “The reason for this reform, the reason for this big reform, is to keep our economy strong and globally competitive for the future. That is why we are doing it,” Rudd told Australian radio. “The other reason, of course, is to ensure that all Australians get a fair share from the resources which they, the Australian people, ultimately own.”

KABUL, Afghanistan – Two more American troops were killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday, the military said, extending a spike of bloodshed into a second day and pushing the NATO losses in the country to 23 in just over a week. The latest deaths came as insurgents step up bombings and other attacks ahead of a major NATO operation in the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar that Washington hopes will turn the tide of the nearly 9-year-old war. Monday was the bloodiest day this year for international forces in Afghanistan, when seven American troops, two Australians and a French Legionnaire were killed in five separate insurgent attacks in the south and east of the country. Two civilian contractors training police, an American and a Nepalese, also died in a brazen suicide attack Monday in the southern city of Kandahar. NATO said two service members were killed Tuesday in a makeshift bomb blast in southern Afghanistan, and the U.S. military confirmed they were Americans. They provided no further details. The deaths took the toll on NATO forces to 23 in June, including 13 Americans, according to a count by The Associated Press. Half of the Monday deaths — five Americans — were in a single blast in eastern Afghanistan, U.S. spokesman Col. Wayne Shanks said without giving further details. It was a grim reminder the insurgents can strike throughout the country — not simply in the south, which has become the main focus of the U.S. campaign. Two other U.S. troops were killed in separate attacks Monday in the south — one in a bombing and the other by small arms fire. NATO said three other service members were killed in attacks Monday in the east and south but gave no further details. The French government announced one of the victims was a sergeant in the French Foreign Legion killed by a rocket in Kapisa province northeast of Kabul. Three other Legionnaires were wounded. “I think we’re just seeing a hard day in theater,” Lt. Gen. Afghanistan among some 1,500 troops. Monday was the deadliest day for NATO since Oct. 26, when 11 American troops were killed, including seven who died in a helicopter crash in eastern Afghanistan. The crash was not believed a result of hostile fire. U.S. commanders have warned of more casualties as the alliance gears up for a major operation to secure Kandahar, the former headquarters of the Taliban and the biggest city in the south with a half million people. Last December, President Barack Obama ordered 30,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan to try to stem the rise of the Taliban, who have bounced back since they were ousted from power in the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. Obama has shifted the focus of the U.S. campaign against Islamist terror to Afghanistan from Iraq, where the U.S. is expected to draw down to 50,000 troops by the fall. “There are a lot of troops in action, a lot going on at this present time, and this has just been a difficult day for us,” Hurley said. Five Afghan private security guards were killed and four others wounded in a roadside bomb blast in eastern Ghazni province, the Interior Ministry said. Afghan special forces backed by U.S. helicopter gunships battled with insurgents for 12 hours overnight Monday in a remote Taliban-controlled region of northwestern Badghis province, said the commander, Maj. Zainudin Sharifi. Afghan troops counted the bodies of 23 militants on the battlefield on Tuesday morning, he said, adding there were no casualties on the Afghan side. As fighting escalates, the Afghan government is reaching out to the insurgents in hopes of ending the war. Last week, President Hamid Karzai won endorsement from a national conference for his plan to offer incentives to the militants to lay down their arms, and to seek talks with the Taliban leadership. The leadership has so far publicly shunned the offer, and the U.S. is skeptical whether peace can succeed until the Taliban are weakened on the battlefield.

JAKARTA - A chain-smoking Indonesian toddler has cut back to 15 cigarettes a day thanks to “therapy focused on playing”, a child welfare official said Tuesday. Two-year-old Ardi Rizal shocked the world when a video of him smoking a cigarette appeared on the Internet last month and drew attention to Indonesia’s failure to regulate the tobacco industry. Six months after his father gave him his first cigarette, the overweight boy from Sumatra island was smoking 40 a day and threw violent tantrums if his addiction was not satisfied. Child welfare officials called in to try to wean the toddler off cigarettes said that when they played with him he did not smoke as much. “The boy has been able to reduce his cigarette intake significantly, very quickly, after the treatment,” National Commission for Child Protection chairman Seto Mulyadi told AFP. “The therapy focused on playing — we occupied him with toys so that he forgets cigarettes,” he said. Ardi developed his nicotine addiction while spending his days at a traditional market where both of his parents worked, Mulyadi said.
Simple toys and someone to play with were enough to take his mind off cigarettes, at least for a while. The therapists also encouraged Ardi to associate cigarettes with bad things. “The boy likes singing songs so we tell him that if he continues smoking, he won’t be able to be a singer one day, and it works,” Mulyadi said. “It’s much easier to help kids like him than teenage tobacco addicts.” Ardi’s case has highlighted the tobacco industry’s aggressive marketing to women and children in developing countries like Indonesia, where regulations are weak and many people do not know that smoking is dangerous. Cigarette consumption in the Southeast Asian archipelago of some 240 million people soared 47 percent in the 1990s, according to the World Health Organization. Indonesia’s biggest cigarette manufacturer, PT HM Sampoerna, is an affiliate of Philip Morris International.
President presents 179 environmental awards Antara
JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono presented 179 environmental awards on the occasion of the World Environment Day commemoration at the State Palace here on Tuesday. The awards were given in three categories, namely “Kalpataru” for individuals and groups; “Adipura” for 140 districts and cities; and “Adiwiyata Mandiri” 2010 for 25 schools. The awards were presented personally by the president, who was flanked by Environment Minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta, to the awardees. The theme of World Environment Day this year is “Many Species One Planet, One Future,” according to Minister Hatta. He said the theme was crucial for Indonesia where biodiversity was still being overexploited threatening the proper functions and order of the ecosystem. Biodiversity is an element that forms the environment and functions as the main support for the human survival and welfare, according to him.
The “Kalpataru” awards for the environmental pioneer category were among other things given to Djohan Riduan Hasan from Girimaya, Bukit Intan sub district, Pangkal Pinang, Bangka Belitung Province (Sumatra Island), for his contribution to rehabilitate former-tin mining-site critical land. Another recipient of “Kalpataru” was Mateus Bere Bau from Kewar village, Lamaknen sub district, Belu District, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province, for his service in planting and caring trees in arid and rocky areas for the last 35 years. Mahyidin from Aneuk Laot, Sukakarya sud district, Sabang, Aceh Province, also received “Kalpataru” Award, for helping rehabilitate mangrove forest. The two other awardees were Kholifah from Kedung Ringin village, Beji sub district, Pasuruan District, East Java Province, for pioneering in organic agriculture since 1999 by developing bio-pesticides and fertilizers; and Ujang Solikhin, an army soldier, from Kertasari village, Ciamis sub district, West Java, for turning wastes into alternative energy in the form of organic charcoal briquette to replace kerosene.

Census officials have said they believe the woman’s claims to have been born in 1853, when Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata” debuted in Venice, the Crimean War erupted and San Francisco got its first street signs at intersections. “There’s no authentic data
to prove her age but judging from her statements and the age of her adopted daughter, who’s now 108 years old, it’s difficult to doubt it,” statistics bureau official Jhonny Sardjono said Monday. The only person verified to have lived past 120 years of age was Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the age of 122. South Sumatran villager Turinah would be fully 25 years older than Calment when she died, according to officials. Even more incredible, she still works around the house and has smoked clove cigarettes all her life, Sardjono said.
“Despite her age she still has an incredible memory, clear sight and has no hearing problems. She speaks Dutch quite fluently,” he added. Indonesia was a Dutch colony for hundreds of years until 1945. He said Turinah burnt all her identification documents to avoid being linked to an alleged communist coup in 1965. Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country with a population of around 240 million people. JAKARTA - Indonesian police are hunting 26 prisoners who escaped from a jail in restive Papua province on the weekend after most of their guards failed to report for duty, an official said Monday. The prisoners including robbers and rapists used a rope to scale a four-metre (13-foot) outer wall at Abepura prison, Jayapura district, on Saturday, Abepura prison chief Liberti Sitinjak told AFP. “I’m extremely embarrassed. Our officers are not disciplined. Only three of the seven guards turned up for duty that day,” he
said. “The prison isn’t properly secured... the wire fence separating the wall and building is damaged so the prisoners could run away easily.” He said more prisoners were “waiting their turn” to climb the wall when guards finally spotted them and put an end to the breakout. Eighteen other inmates escaped from the same prison last month amid reports of a bitter rivalry between wardens over who should be running the jail. Police have set up roadblocks around Jayapura and along the border with Papua New Guinea in a bid to catch the escapees.
“We’re also carrying out an internal investigation to see if our officers were unprofessional and need to be expelled,” Sitinjak said. Indonesia’s prison system is riddled with corruption, drug abuse and disease, according to independent monitors. Human rights experts say inmates in Papua, including political prisoners, are often abused and tortured. DENPASAR - ASEAN member states plan to unify their economies five years earlier than it’s initially plan. The ten members countries agree to make the economic unification by 2015. The Indonesia Ambassador to ASEAN I Gde Ngurah Swajaya stated during his trip to Bali. “The ASEAN member countries are preparing to become an economic entity like the Eurpean Union in Europe. But ASEAN unification will not have single currency like EU,” explain Swajaya who was born at Bondalem, Buleleng. Further he explained that ASEAN would become a single market. No duties would be imposed any more on trade among member countries. There will be zero import tariffs among ASEAN countries and this is expected to lower the prices of their goods. Besides cutting import tariffs to zero percent, he said, the agreement would also give opportunity to industries outside ASEAN to build plants in the region. “ASEAN is to become a production center for world industries. Automotive and other industries must have a production base in one of the ASEAN member countries,” he said. According to Swajaya, the economic unification would benefit the ASEAN
member countries because thereby international investment would flow into the region. Along with investment, job opportunities would also increase in the region, he said while noting that the ASEAN region was a vast market of about 500 million people. ASEAN’s economic unification would also mean liberalization of the services sector. Manpower in ASEAN member countries could then work anywhere in the region. “We will then no longer be able to prevent people from other ASEAN member countries to come to Indonesia to work, provided they meet international certification standards, like medical practitioners and hoteliers,” he said. The dance itself is merely intended for entertainment purpose. Other than performances above, it also presents some kid traditional games and gallivanting shows. According to local tradition, the latter is intended to exorcise the evil spirits from the territory of customary village. For the show, customary villager or art troupe dances a barong effigy supported by two players. It is performed from one entrance gates to another throughout the village where every family will offer some oblations and in exchange they will obtain holy water to be sprinkled within the house compound and to the entire family members for the unseen (niskala) security. Hindu psalmody known as kekawin or kidung also jazzes up the festival. It is presented through Utsawa Dharma Gita event or literally means the festival of the songs on dharma. This involves participants of adult and school children. Other than deepening of religious teaching, it also aims at implanting the love to religious literature and entertainment. Like welcoming the New Year, this arts festival always offers the old and new ‘art products.’ Aside from the basic contents of the festival as mentioned above, it also gives opportunity to local handicrafts, painting exhibition, fashion shows, flower arrangement and Balinese traditional culinary festival. DENPASAR – Fifteen of Indonesian writers will take part in “Ubud Writers and Readers Festival 2010”(UWRF) which will be held in Ubud, Gianyar in October 2010. Triyanto Triwikromo, one of the curator council in the event, said that the writers are , Kurnia Effendi (Jakarta), Medy Lukito (Jakarta), Nusya Kuswatin (Yogyakarta), Arif Riski (Padang), Zelfeni Wimra (Padang), Wa Ode Wulan Ratna (Jakarta), Andha S (Padang), Imam Muhtarom (Blitar), Wendoko (Semarang), Yudhi Heribowo (Solo), W. Hariyanto (Surabaya), Benny Arnas (southern Sumatera), Magriza Novita Syahti (Padang), Harry B Koriun (Riau), serta Hermawan Aksan (Bandung). Directions Cut steak in 1/2" thick strips. Heat oil in a saucepan. Add Spanish onion slices and garlic and fry gently until soft. Add beef and fry, stirring, until brown. Add spices to beef and cook 2 minutes. Add coconut, brown sugar, lemon juice and beef stock; stir well. Simmer gently, uncovered, 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until mixture is thickened and dry. Stir mixture more frequently towards end of cooking time to prevent sticking. BEIJING - The time is right for China to reform its exchange rate regime, and such a move would not have a major impact on the country’s economy, a government researcher was quoted Tuesday as saying. The pressure on the yuan to rise has waned, which shows the currency’s rate is close to “a market balanced value”, said Fan Jianjun, a financial analyst at the Development Research Centre under the State Council, China’s cabinet. “Advancing the exchange rate regime reform now will not lead to a sharp appreciation in the yuan and will not cause any significant impact on the real economy,” Fan told the China Economic Times in an interview.
“It is now the best time to push forward the reform of the yuan’s exchange rate regime,” he said. Critics in Washington and Europe say the yuan, which has effectively been pegged to the dollar for about two years and now stands at 6.8 to the dollar, is artificially kept low to give Chinese exporters an unfair edge. China insists its yuan policy is needed to protect jobs and Chinese leaders have repeatedly said the country would adjust its exchange rate policy at its own pace
— but Fan’s comments appeared to go far beyond the consensus view. ZURICH - Swiss authorities on Tuesday cut the country’s growth forecast for 2011 to 1.6 percent from 2.0 percent, citing “increased external trade risks” arising from the debt crisis in the eurozone. For 2010, however, the State Secretariat for Economics Affairs sees stronger growth than forecast earlier as it raised its forecast from 1.4 percent to 1.8 percent. “While the growth prospects for 2010 are even slightly better than anticipated until now, the Gross Domestic Product forecast for 2011 in light of increased external trade risks in connection with the euro crisis will be low-
ered slightly,” it said. The secretariat noted that Swiss exports — about 60 percent of which goes to the eurozone — would be hurt as European states tighten their belts. “Restrictive financial policy in almost all euro countries at the same time is not likely to be possible without a damping efffect on the economy even if one considers that a reliable financial policy change could create trust in the financial markets and attenuate damping effects on demand,” it noted. The secretariat also warned that the increase in value of the Swiss franc against the euro was another negative. The “greatest economic risk for Switzerland is still likely to be
a suddenly excessive appreciation of the franc in relation to the euro,” it added. The Swiss franc, traditionally a refuge currency, has been gaining against the euro, falling below the psychological barrier of 1.40 francs per euro last week. The secretariat gave a bearish reading of the eurozone debt crisis, saying that the problem was far from over. “Despite substantial rescue measures, the underlying financial problems of the affected countries have not yet been resolved. “Far from existing only in the eurozone, the turbulences in the financial markets therefore form a latent risk,” it said, pointed to high indebtedness in Britain, the United States and Japan.

FRANKFURT - Exports from Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, slumped in April and its trade surplus fell by more than 20 percent, data published on Tuesday by the national statistics office showed. The value of German exports fell by a seasonally adjusted 5.9 percent from their level in March to 74.3 billion euros (88.9 billion dollars), while imports dropped by 7.3 percent to 61.2 billion, the Destatis office said. German exports had soared in March and economists expected the April figures to show a decline without disrupting the trend that is headed upwards over the longer term. The world’s second-biggest exporter after China posted an uncorrected trade surplus of 13.4 billion euros, down from a revised 16.9 billion euros the previous month. The sharp drop in April exports “was the almost natural correction after an exceptionally strong month of March,” ING senior economist Carsten Brzeski said. Germany has also been pressed by eurozone neighbours and the United States to boost domestic consumption and balance out a persistent trade surplus. But “looking ahead, with strong global demand and the weak euro exchange rate, exports should continue to be the main driver of the German recovery,” Brzeski added. Pressure on the euro against
other major currencies eased on Tuesday but the unit remained depressed a day after hitting a four-year low on deepening fears over Europe’s debt woes, Tokyo dealers said. The single European currency traded at 1.1962 dollars in late Asian trading. A steep drop by the euro since late last year has boosted many exports from the 16-nation eurozone, and the German economy ministry said on Monday that industrial orders gained 2.8 percent in April on a monthly basis. That was the result of both stronger domestic and foreign demand, but the value of foreign orders has now reached levels seen before US investment bank Lehman Brothers collapsed in September 2008, deepening the global financial crisis. “The trend in German exports is clearly pointing further up,” Commerzbank economist Simon Junker said. Berlin will probably have to depend on the country’s well-oiled export machine for a while, after unveiling on Monday deep spending cuts that could curb domestic demand. By 2014, the government hopes to cut 86 billion euros in spending as part of its effort to reach an essentially balanced budget by 2016 at the latest. “I think recent months have shown, in the case of Greece and other eurozone countries, how extraordinarily important sound finances are — they are basic conditions for stability and prosperity,” Chancellor Angela Merkel said.

Marvin, youngest of Isley Brothers, dies at 56 Associated Press Writer
CHICAGO – Marvin Isley, the bass player who helped give R&B powerhouse the Isley Brothers their distinctive sound, has died at a Chicago hospital. He was 56. Isley died Sunday morning at an inpatient hospice at Weiss Memorial Hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Catherine Gianaro. She could not confirm a cause of death.

Isley stopped performing in 1996 after suffering complications from diabetes that included a stroke, high blood pressure, the loss of both legs and use of his left hand. He joined his brothers’ band in 1973. By that time, the Isley Brothers had established themselves with hits like 1959’s “Shout,” which sold more than 1 million records. Isley splintered off to form Isley-Jasper-Isley in the 1980s and returned to the Isley Brothers in the 1990s. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and their career has spanned six decades. At one point there were five Isley brothers in the group, including Marvin. Today, only Ronald Isley is touring full time after a three-year stint in federal prison for tax evasion. The group’s hits included “Twist and
Shout,” later recorded by The Beatles, “Love The One You’re With,” and the Grammy-winning 1969 smash, “It’s Your Thing.” In a 2001 interview, Marvin Isley told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he regretted spending decades ignoring his diabetes. “If I would have listened, if I would have understood diabetes like I understood music, maybe these things wouldn’t have happened,” Isley said at the time. In 2000, he settled a lawsuit against his older siblings stemming from a dispute over money from the estate of his deceased older brother, O’Kelly Isley, and from a $7 million plagiarism award against Michael Bolton relating to the group’s 1966 song “Love Is A Wonderful Thing.” Funeral arrangements were not immediately available.

Secret Revealed: How Crocodiles Cross Oceans How did the world’s largest living reptile, the saltwater crocodile, reach so many South Pacific islands separated by huge stretches of water despite being a poor swimmer? Apparently, like a surfer catching a wave, these goliaths can ride currents on the ocean surface to cross large areas of open sea, researchers now reveal. The saltwater or estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is a ferocious giant that can grow at least 23 feet long (7 meters) and weigh more than 2,200 pounds (1000 kilograms). These scaly monsters have been known to devour sharks, and even attack things they can’t eat, often assaulting boats in the mistaken belief they are rivals or prey, biting down with nearly 2 tons of pressure - powerful enough to crush bone or punch through aluminum hulls. These deadly predators hunt in tropical areas throughout eastern India, southeast Asia, northern Australia, and on an untold number of the islands in-between. Although these crocodiles spend most of their lives in saltwater, they cannot be considered marine reptiles the same way sea turtles are, because the crocs rely on land for food and water. There were already many anecdotal accounts of large crocodiles sighted far out at sea, but nothing confirmed. Now, for the first time, using sonar transmitters and satellite tracking, scientists now find that saltwater crocodiles actually do ride
surface ocean currents for long-distance travel, enabling them to voyage from one oceanic island to another. “Because these crocodiles are poor swimmers, it is unlikely that they swim across vast tracts of ocean,” said researcher Hamish Campbell, a behavioral ecologist from University of Queensland in Australia. “But they can survive for long periods in saltwater without eating or drinking, so by only traveling when surface currents are favorable, they would be able to move long distances by sea.” Crocodile river travel
Working at the remote Kennedy River in northeastern Australia, the team of scientists - which included the late Steve Irwin, “The Crocodile Hunter” - tagged 27 adult seawater crocodiles with sonar transmitters, employing 20 underwater receivers deployed along a 39-mile-long stretch of the river (63 km) to track the reptiles’ every move for more than 12 months. They found both male and female adult crocodiles undertook long-distance journeys, regularly traveling more than 30 miles (48 km) from their home area to the river mouth and beyond into open sea.

The iPhone 4 is sleeker and more advanced than the original iPhone that came out in 2007. Like the iPhone 3GS, it comes in black or white, though it has a more angular look. Its front and back are covered with glass, and it is
rimmed with stainless steel that acts as part of the phone’s antenna. It is about three-eighths of an inch thick; the iPhone 3GS is nearly half an inch. It can shoot high-definition video, catching up to some other smart phones. It has a gyroscope in addition to other sensors, to enable more advanced motion-sensing applications, such as games and mapping services. The display on the iPhone remains 3.5 inches diagonally, but Jobs noted that it can show four times as many pixels — the individual colored dots that make up an image — as the previous screen. That makes for a sharper appearance. One of the most noticeable changes is the iPhone’s new camera on the front that can be used for videoconferencing, in addition to a five-megapixel camera and a flash on the back. For now, the videoconferencing function, FaceTime, works only if both parties to the call have an iPhone 4 and are connected over Wi-Fi rather than a cell phone network. Jobs indicated that FaceTime will eventually work over cellular networks, saying Apple needs to “work a little bit” with wireless providers to make it “ready for the future.”

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket achieved Earth orbit nine minutes into the flight as planned, drawing praise from NASA, the White House and others eager for the company to start resupplying the International Space Station. “This has really been a fantastic day,” said an exuberant Elon Musk, SpaceX’s founder. He said Friday’s launch helps vindicate President Barack Obama’s plan to give private companies the job of ferrying cargo and ultimately people to the space station, freeing up NASA to aim for true outer space. “This bodes very well for the Obama plan,” said Musk, the co-founder of PayPal. “It shows that even a sort of small new company like SpaceX can make a real difference.” In a telephone news conference, Musk said celebratory margaritas were on his immediate radar. But he’s already looking ahead to the next Falcon 9 launch this summer and, hopefully, the first cargo run to the space station next year. Astronauts could follow within three years of the company getting a contract from NASA, he said, and quite possibly average citizens in five to six years. “This is the dawn of a new era in space exploration, I think a very exciting era and one which I think will lead to the democratization of space, making space accessible to everyone eventually,” Musk said. “Yeah, I think this is really a historic moment.”

RUSTENBURG, South Africa – Wayne Rooney played down concerns over England’s lacklustre World Cup build-up and insisted he was raring to go ahead of the opening group C clash with the United States here on Saturday. Fabio Capello’s side have looked unconvincing in their warm-up internationals against Mexico and Japan and that impression was confirmed by another disjointed display in the 30 win over South African Premier League side Platinum Stars on Monday. England did however look much sharper once Rooney came on as a second half substitute and the Manchester United striker created his side’s second goal before claiming the third for himself. “It was a good run-out, we needed to get the game in and to play 45 minutes felt good so I was happy,” Rooney said. “I think we got out of it what we needed. I would have liked to have got a bit more of a game but I was happy with the 45 minutes. “We are ready - these are preparation games for us for the big one now coming up on Saturday. I just can’t wait now. The sooner it comes, the better.” Rooney’s input into Monday’s match came at a price with the striker picking up a booking for dissent and generally charging around in a manner which would have reminded many England fans of his conduct in the 2006 quarter-final against Portugal, in

Hall of Famer Cowens urges LeBron to stay in Cleveland Reuters
BOSTON – LeBron James should remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers and eschew the freeagent market for the good of the league, the community, and most of all, himself, Hall of Famer Dave Cowens said on Monday. James will soon become a free agent and speculation on where the two-times MVP will land has triggered a spirited guessing-game across the North American sporting landscape. Cowens, a seven-times All-Star power forward with the Boston Celtics during the 1970s-80s, said he hoped James would try to win the NBA championship with the Cavaliers. “If I was LeBron I would stay in Cleveland,” Cowens told Reuters on the eve of Game Three of the NBA Finals between the Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. “He can make his money anywhere, even in the smallest market in the NBA. “He could be in New Orleans, Utah, he’s still going to command his international fame and the dollars that go along with that. “Why he would leave Cleveland,
I don’t know. He has no problems with the owner and the fans certainly want him.” James will become a free agent next month and fans of several major-market clubs, especially New York, Chicago, and Miami, are hoping the Cleveland-area native jumps ship. The 25-year-old has been with the Cavaliers for his entire seven-year NBA career and remains searching for his first championship. Cleveland had the league’s best record this season (61-21) but were bounced in the second round of the playoffs by the Celtics. The Cavaliers also made the NBA Finals in 2007 only to be swept by San Antonio. The team’s history of postseason pain has heightened speculation James will be on the move. Cowens, 61, said the Celtics and the Lakers, the NBA teams with the
most titles, have a tradition of keeping players throughout their careers and James should take note. “A lot of guys take pleasure in the fact they’ve only played for one team. With the Celtics, you had (Bill) Russell ...(John) Havlicek, the Jones boys (Sam and K.C.) and Larry Bird,” said Cowens, who played 10 of his 11 years in Boston. “With the Lakers, there was Jerry West, Kobe Bryant and others. They played there and just stayed there. “That’s something that’s good for the whole league, it’s good for the player and it’s good for the community.” Cowens, who works in the Detroit Pistons’ front-office but will leave at the end of the month, predicted the NBA Finals, which are tied 1-1, will go the full seven games though he would not name a winner. “Who is going to win the title is anyone’s guess,” he said. “I have no idea.”

Cyclist Landis hires LeMond lawyer: report Agence France Presse
NEW YORK – Floyd Landis, who last month admitted doping throughout his cycling career and accused Lance Armstrong and others, has hired a law firm that once represented US cyclist Greg LeMond, the New York Daily News reported. Landis, formerly of US Postal and Phonak, caused a sensation last month when he admitted to systematic doping prior to being stripped of his Tour de France crown in 2006. The American also accused seven-times Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, among other former teammates at the now defunct US Postal team, and the team’s manager Johan Bruyneel, not only of doping but also conspiring with an International Cycling Union official to have a positive Armstrong test suppressed. Armstrong and Bruyneel have categorically denied all the accusations. The newspaper cited “two people with knowledge of the situation” as saying Landis has received a “strongly-worded” letter from the office of Hein Verbruggen, a former president of the UCI who was accused by Landis of colluding to suppress a positive drug test for Armstrong. Pat McQuaid, who took over as president of the UCI in 2006, confirmed that the letter had been sent from UCI’s general counsel. “They are asking him to cease and desist from making statements he’s made about Mr. Verbruggen in the past few weeks because they are not true,” McQuaid told The News on Monday, according to a story posted on the newspaper’s website. JOHANNESBURG – South Africa put the finishing touches to its World Cup preparations, rolling out the continent’s first highspeed rail link on Tuesday, as organisers told critics it was time to put doubts aside. The three-billion-dollar Gautrain began whisking passengers from Johannesburg’s international airport into the uptown Sandton district, just three days before the tournament begins.
The 100-mile-an-hour link will be one of the key legacies of the tournament and is intended to show that Africa can build transport facilities to rival those of anywhere in the world. “I have been in Johannesburg just for one hour — the airport and here — but I really thought this was a first world service,” Costa Rican football journalist Gustavo Jimenez told AFP as he stepped off the train at Sandton. “That’s not only because of the facilities and the building, but also

But the train will eventually take passengers into the central business district, the suburb of Rosebank and onto Pretoria, the seat of government. The highway between Pretoria and Johannesburg is the busiest in the country and the journey can be a two-hour commute at rush-hour, but the same trip on the Gautrain should take just 42 minutes. Michael Bettendorf, a 27-year-old investment banker from Trier in Germany was another impressed passenger. “It’s more modern than the trains in Trier.
Bucking the general trend amongst paddock observers, ex-F1 star Gerhard Berger has pointed the finger of blame firmly at Mark Webber for the contentious and costly coming-together between the Red Bull Racing team-mates in the Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul just over a week ago. Following much debate and a degree of criticism that Red Bull’s immediate response was to back Sebastian Vettel – widely-regarded as the perpetrator of the incident, and a driver who some suggest is RBR’s favourite son, to the detriment of Webber – the Australian and German have since made up and agreed to put the disagreement behind them for the sake of team unity, in public at least. winner Berger – the former coowner of Red Bull ‘junior’ outfit Scuderia Toro Rosso – has now waded into the argument by claiming that Webber squeezed Vettel until contact was inevitable, agreeing with Dr. Helmut Marko’s initial assessment that the immovable object should have let the irresistible force through. “That Webber left him (Vettel) only the dirty bit of the track was at first legitimate,” the Austrian is quoted as having said by ESPN, “but when Vettel was half a car-length ahead, Mark needed to realise that he should give his team-mate some air to breathe. “Webber could have prevented the accident. Had Vettel been in a McLaren, then Webber could have done what he did. In that case, he must not give way.”
