Bali News Joged Magnet’s Still Strong Denpasar – The joged bumbung dance (Balinese dance accompanied by a bamboo gamelan ensemble which involves a female dancer inviting members of the audience to perform with her) had never failed its watchers. Its magnet is still strong and wherever it’s performed is always crowded by people, so was the one performed in 32nd BAF last Monday (5/7) at Kalangan Ayodya, Bali’s Art Center. As the dancer from Sekaa Joged Tunjung Mekar Sinabun Village, Buleleng entered, some are ready to be her dance partner (pengibing). Cheerful atmosphere filled up the space that was full of audience half hour before the performance. The dynamic gamelan playing added the atmosphere and the pengibing bring colors to the dance as there

are different kinds of styles given such as dancing with masks and also people prepared with Balinese traditional clothes. A joged dancer usually gets so many pengibing as it’s a much liked popular socializing dance to the people. The unique movements of the dancer were accompanied by gamelan instruments such as riong, gamelan gender and more. In this performance from this sekaa joged there were three dancers starting with an opening gamelan playing (tabuh) completed with performances from two teen dancers. (08)

Traditional traders urge govt to control permits of supermarket Semarapura (Bali Post)—

The presence of supermarkets/mini markets in Klungkung Regency is just like mushroom in rainy season. Government of Klungkung Regency did not set it properly from the beginning when issuing permits. Consequently, many mini markets gather in one area. Moreover, they are side by side and very close to traditional markets that of course can threaten the traders in the market. Traders get pushed. They asked government to issue permits selectively and wisely. It should not merely pursue the growth of investment. However, government should pay attention to the traditional vendors as the asset of regional government. Head of Klungkung Market management, Nyoman Mudiarta, when met at Galiran Market, last Monday (Jul 5), acknowledged to have heard about the complaints delivered by merchants. He urged continuing the complaints to Parliament to fight further to government. “However, I ask that the problem should be studied in depth first in order the struggle could run in harmony,” he said. Traditional traders, he said, did not go against the supermarket investment. However, it should be arranged in such a way, mainly arranged in relation to the distance/radius. Its condition is very deplorable, too,” added Mudiarta. Since it was established as destination of relocation of the merchants in the North Market during the development of the market in 1994, up to these days there is no improvement. When the victim’s home was deserted because her mother worked as an attendant of public toilet at West Amlapura, his father went to work as a building worker, while her grandmother Ni Luh Berati, 60, was selling feed of pig, Kadek came to her house at 9:00 am Local Time. At that point, the victim was raped in her house in a very simple room. Previously, the perpetrator gave her imitation of a gold bracelet and necklace. Perpetrator has prepared himself much earlier. He asked friend how to fuck his acquaintance in order not to become pregnant. Based on the information, he prepared a condom. When interrogated by police, perpetrator confessed often to watch porn videos. The boy from Bangras, Amlapura, then imitated the action watched to the underage victim. Intercourse or rape cases against underage girls in Karangasem have increased within the past six months of this year. In this case, police did not process the two men because there were no reporting witnesses. Out of 10 cases this year, eight cases had been legally processed, on trial by judges or investigation process by police or its document remaining in the state prosecutor. In the same slum and room, the deceased inexperienced girl Kadek Mariadi, 9, last May also became a victim of rape and intercourse by her own elder brother, I Nengah Su, 15. Beauty in the form of various dance movements has been introduced since early ages. On seeing a dance staged, a toddler may watch it attentively or its fingers move and move as if imitating the movement of the dance. Virtually all customary villages in Bali have gamelan troupe. This troupe plays important role in expressing their entertainment arts and accompanying every ritual activity. This existence gives opportunity to villagers from child to adult to express their artistic talent especially in dance, drama and gamelan arts. Young girls under twelve or elementary school age have a chance to participate in performing Rejang Dance. By wearing white and yellow costumes and floral decoration on head, they dance beautifully accompanied by gamelan music. Rejang Dance is one of the sacred dances performed in relation to the organization of temple anniversary or odalan. Other than putting a basic love to their tradition, they also show devotional service or ngatur ayah through the arts. When they grow older, right on entering secondary school, they join customary village youth club or Sekaa Taruna. Here, with their male friends and their brothers and sisters start to learn about organization. Many things can be learned through this organization. Since it has affiliation to customary village, they can learn about the making of some simple oblation under guidance of senior oblation maker and various traditional arts. In Bali, this youth club actually play important role in preparing young generation to maintain their valuable cultural heritages or to prepare them-

selves for inheriting customary responsibility. With their male counterpart, here the young girls also learn to play drama or more complex traditional arts. Popular genres of performance showed are pure entertainment and the one in combination with sacred dance. The latter usually features Calonarang. This magical drama involves a combination of male and female players. In essence, this Calonarang drama highlights the endless fight between truth and untruth symbolizing by sanctified effigies or tapakan like Rangda and Barong. By and large, it is also associated with ritual events at local temple. In the following stage, when woman gets married she will enter the new organization, namely customary village. Having learned much about ritual works, it is now the time to practice them in wider social life. They should attend some socio-religious activities when the events engage the members of customary village. At this stage, household mother can remain to show her devotional service through the arts other than social works. Through the arts, they may join the drama or individual psalmodic singing or pasantian. How is about their private life? It is normal as others. They also have opportunity to build career in their profession. In modern life with heterogeneous professions as today, woman also works as men do. Traditions do not impede them to reach outstanding achievement in self-employee or office job. If they work at daytime, some social works will be held at the evening. Tradition is not something obsolete. Even, it retains abundant inspirations to create something new and creative that is advantageous for modern life. However, traditions should also be reviewed and adjust to the current condition without leaving behind its core. Tradition does not hinder women to get their career achievement. TEL AVIV, Israel – Thousands of marchers brought Israel’s cultural and financial capital to a standstill, urging the government to do whatever it takes to win freedom for a soldier captured four years ago by Gaza militants. Near Israel’s border with Gaza, thousands more gathered for a concert led by a world-famous conductor to press Hamas to let the Red Cross visit the soldier for the first time. The two scenes Monday — aimed at drawing renewed attention to the soldier’s plight — are part of a high-profile campaign that has opened deep divisions in Israel and put Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the defensive. Gilad Schalit to come home to his family, there are deep disagreements over whether the price demanded by Hamas is too high: the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including many convicted of terror attacks. Some are aiming their anger at Hamas, an Iranian-backed group that has killed hundreds of Israe-

Their 12-day march will end on Thursday outside the prime minister’s residence in Jerusalem, where the Schalit family has pledged to camp until they see their son again. Schalit’s captors have barred any access, even by the Red Cross, and released only a brief videotape last year to prove he was still alive.

PARIS – France’s hotly debated bill to ban burqa-style Islamic veils in public is going before parliament, with President Nicolas Sarkozy’s government casting the measure as a way to promote equality between the sexes and protect oppressed women. The bill being debated Tuesday is widely expected to become law, despite the concerns of many French Muslims, who fear it will stigmatize them. Many law scholars also argue it would violate the constitution. While ordinary Muslim headscarves are common in France, face-covering veils are a rarity — the Interior Ministry says only 1,900 women in France wear them. Yet the planned law would be a turning point for Islam in a country with a Muslim population of at least 5 million people, the largest in western Europe. France is determined to protect the country’s deeply rooted secular values, and the conservative government is encouraging a moderate, state-sanctioned Islam that respects the secular state. Last week Prime Minister Francois Fillon inaugurated a mosque in the

Paris suburbs. Discussion on face-covering veils starts later Tuesday at the National Assembly, or lower house, where lawmakers are expected to vote on the bill July 13. The bill goes to the Senate in September. Some leftist opposition lawmakers also support it. Authorities in several European countries have been debating similar bans. Belgium’s lower house has enacted a ban on the face-covering veil, though it must be ratified by the upper chamber. In France, the bill says France’s founding tenets of liberty, equality and fraternity are at stake. The legislation would forbid face-

covering Muslim veils such as the niqab or burqa in all public places in France, even in the street. It calls for euro150 ($185) fines or citizenship classes for women who run afoul of the law, and in some cases both. Part of the bill is aimed at husbands and fathers who impose such veils on female family members. Under the most current version of the text, anyone convicted of forcing a woman to wear such a veil risks a year of prison and a euro30,000 fine — with both those penalties doubled if the victim is a minor. Amnesty International has urged French lawmakers to reject the bill, and a French anti-racism group, MRAP, which opposes such dress, has said a law would be “useless and dangerous.” France’s highest administrative body, the Council of State, warned in March that a total ban risks being found unconstitutional. France banned common Muslim headscarves and other obvious religious symbols from classrooms in 2004.

Pamplona’s San Fermin party begins Associated Press Writer

PAMPLONA, Spain – Thousands of people packed into Pamplona’s main square Tuesday to spray each other with wine as a firecracker rocket blasted off to start Spain’s San Fermin bull-running festival. The nine-day festival got under way at midday with the traditional shout from the city hall balcony of “Viva San Fermin!” followed seconds later by the firing of the firecracker known as the chupinazo. The rocket blast was the signal to the revelers — many in the festival’s traditional dress of white shirts and trousers and red neckerchiefs — to erupt into party mode. Australia: East Timor could process asylum seekers Associated Press Writer

SYDNEY – Australia’s new leader proposed Tuesday to stop an influx of asylum seeker boats by making East Timor a hub for processing U.N. refugee claims for people fleeing war and persecution — an idea the tiny, impoverished nation said it was still considering. Prime Minister Julia Gillard said she also had discussed the proposal with U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres — who has apparently not yet signed off on it. Gillard’s announcement was a shift in policy that aims to defuse a politically and racially charged debate that has flared in Australia ahead of elections expected to be held within months. Australia receives just a tiny proportion of the world’s asylum seekers, but in the past three years has witnessed a surge of people arriving via Indonesia in rickety boats — some

150 in the past three years carrying around 4,000 people. Each new boat receives wide media coverage and stirs feelings among many Australians that the country is being forced to take them in. The asylum seekers, mostly Afghans and Sri Lankans who have paid criminal syndicates to bring them to Australia, have overflowed a detention center at remote Christmas Island — an Australian territory — and many have been moved to the mainland while their applications are assessed. Police last week threatened to sue Tempo over an article alleging massive corruption among senior police generals accused of amassing millions of dollars in bank accounts from illegal activities. The threat was not related to the corruption allegations, however, but to the magazine cover art that depicted a police officer with piggy banks. Pigs are considered haram (forbidden) in Islam. Police were unavailable to comment on reports in the local media Tuesday, saying they had dropped the threat of legal action. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has demanded a thorough investigation of the corruption allegations after revealing that he had

Search for missing trike aircraft continues Antara

JAKARTA - Search efforts for a trike aircraft that is believed to have crashed in a mountain area in Bandung district on Sunday (July 4), continued on Tuesday by combing around Mount Wayang/Sentosa area, Pengalengan, Bandung. “The search efforts are being carried out through land and air,” a source told ANTARA at Sulaeman airbase, Bandung, West Java, Tuesday.

JAKARTA - The central bank, Bank Indonesia (BI), decided on Monday to maintain its low key rate at 6.5 percent after concluding that inflation which some quarters had predicted would be pushed up by the electricity tariff hikes this month was not worrisome. “The BI Rate is still consistent with the inflation target of five plus or minus one percent for 2010,” BI Acting Governor Darmin Nasution said after a board meeting on Monday. A banker said last month that the government’s plan to increase the basic power rate (TDL) by 10 percent and the fuel oil prices would push up the inflation rate, and cause BI’s key reference rate to be raised by 0.25 to 0.50 percent. “The 10-percent increase in the Basic Electricity Tariff (TDL) for middle and upper class consumers will lead Bank Indonesia to increase its benchmark rate by about 0.25 percent to 0.50 percent at least by the end of this year,” PT OCBC NISP chief commissioner Pramkti Surjaudaja said. He said an increase in the TDL was indeed unavoidable to improve the performance state-owned power utility firm PLN which was also to repair its worn-out power transmission line networks. But the increase would also cause an increase in the domestic inflation rate. The increase in the inflation rate was expected to force BI to raise its key rate, he said. However another banker also predicted last month that the power rate hikes were unlikely to force BI to raise its key rate. He said the central bank was expected to maintain its key rate at 6.5 percent even though the government was planning to increase basic power rates and fuel oil prices.

According to President Director of Bank CIMB Niaga Arwin Rasyid, the government’s plan to increase the TDL rates and fuel oil prices has yet to affect BI’s benchmark rate. He said that it was still too premature to analyze the impact of the power rate increases because it was still in the discourse and was still discussed by the House of Representatives (DPR). “We could not provide responses yet before the discourse becomes a reality,” he said. Moreover, the plan to increase the electricity tariffs and the price of fuel oils had sparked pros and cons, so that its realization would possibly still wait for the correct time. “We predict that the government would also consider the two factors, even though it is now urgent to increase the electricity rates and fuel oil prices,” he said. BI Deputy Governor S.Budi Rochadi expressed the same view saying that the planned electricity tariff hike effective early July would have little effect on the inflation rate. “It will have no significant impact on the inflation rate,” he said following a function marking the transfer of the post of head of BI’s Semarang office last month. Last month, there was a slight increase in the inflation rate but Darmin Nasution said there was no need to worry about inflation in June which reached 0.97 percent. He said the inflation was only driven by a price hike in agricultural products which was temporary in nature. “So, June’s inflation is not worrisome as it will drop again,” he said. The acting BI governor said that the rate of inflation in June indeed could be considered quite high but he remained optimistic that the yearly rate of inflation would be within the targeted range of five plus or minus one percent.

Bali Today Electricity rate hikes affect tourist industry Antara

DENPASAR - Secretary General of Bali’s Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) Perry Markus said the electricity price hike will affect hotel rentals. “Right now hotels had started raising hotel rentals following the increase in electricity rates (TDL). Hotels planned to raise their room rents to offset increased rentals, as TDL hikes increased hotel operational costs,” he said in Denpasar. He added that the TDL hike will have a direct and indirect impact on the hotel industry. He added that the direct impact is increased expenditures on energy, while the indirect impact is increases in the prices of hotel needs, like foods and beverages. “The indirect impact would be felt next month, because electricity had been raised from July 1, 2010, raising the prices of goods and commodities,” he said. He said hotels are currently

seeking formulations and solutions to the power hikes. Perry said that power price hikes which are not raised for all capacity categories will cause that the impact for the time being would not be felt by all hotels. VISITORS of the 32nd Bali Arts Festival (BAF), last Monday (Jul 5, was presented with classical arts like the ancient Gambuh dance. It was performed by Kembang Bang Art Studio, Kedisan Sebatu, Tegallalang, Gianyar, under the leader I Wayan Warta, at Angsoka Stage. Its performance was quite interesting, so it could win the attention of BAF visitors and a number of art connoisseurs. Reinforced by 28 personnel, 11 of them were dancers—all were male— this art troupe presented the story about “Yajna Ritual.” It was recounted that in Java laid a Gegelang kingdom led by King Lobang Kara. This king organized a yajña ritual with the goal of begging safety for the whole world and its contents. The ritual was held at Mount Pangebel. After performing the ritual, the king and his servants were back to the kingdom. However, on the way home he came across with a statesman from Pemowotan Kingdom. This statesman had a revenge on the assassination of his father by King Gegelang. Unavoidably, the battle took place bitterly among them and finally won by the King Gegelang. Coordinator of Gambuh Dance of Kembang Bang Dance Studio, Wayan Gina, said the troupe attempted to preserve the Gambuh art since 2008. The attempt originated in a desire to continue preserving the Gambuh art because it had something to do with Yajna. Meanwhile, the Gambuh dance in general was still less enthused. Such conditions needed to be answered by

revitalizing the Gambuh dance so that its presence would not come to extinction. Ultimately, the idea of generating the Gambuh dance got vivacious welcome from the community. Even, the younger generations were also interested in learning it. “Gambuh may not be separated from the complementary elements of a ceremony. Therefore, Gambuh must remain to exist,” he said. A professor from the Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI) Denpasar, Prof. Dr. Wayan Dibia said that Gambuh dance belonged to ancient art and rare in existence. This kind of art needed revitalizing so that it increasingly existed in Bali. Now, it still existed at a number of villages. Meanwhile, performance of Gambuh by Kembang Bang art troupe was considered adequately good with style of remaining good, as well as its dancer regeneration. This indicated that if trained maximally, the Gambuh dance having something to do with yajña ritual would remain to exist and its present was increasingly required. As a matter of fact, how does the Gambuh dance-drama look like? According to some sources, dance-drama was considered as a dance having the richest motions so that it was assumed as the source of all kinds of Balinese classical dances. Gambuh was estimated to have emerged around the 15th century originating in the Panji stories. The dance is usually performed in relation to yajña ritual activities. Gambuh is accompanied with

pegambuhan gamelan music with pelog saih pitu pitch. Common figures shown in Gambuh consist of Condong, Kakan-kakan, Arya, Princess, Panji, Statesman, Demat, Temenggung, Turas, Panasar and King. In the play, these characters made dialogue generally in Old Javanese or Kawi language, except for the figures Turas, Penasar and Condong spoke fine, medium and vernacular Balinese language. In Bali, Gambuh remains to exist only in a few villages. One of the famous Gambuh dancers is from Pedungan, South Denpasar, namely the late I Gede Geruh. Formerly, the Gambuh art was scattered throughout the regencies. However, in keeping with the passage of time, some Gambuh dance-drama troupes remain to survive, while others not. Gambuh dance-drama has already been considered extremely difficult, either in terms of dance motion, genre, vocals, song, dialogue or expression. It is these assumptions making the regeneration difficult to work. The assumption should be answered with determination and hard work. If there is a willingness to learn, it surely can. Similar opinion was revealed by dancer from Kembang Bang art studio, Tegallalang Sebatu, Kedisan, Gede Adi. If there was an intention and willingness to learn it patiently, Gambuh dance could be mastered well within relatively short time. Directions Simmer the meat in water to cover, together with the salt, until tender. Remove and slice the meat in 1x2 cm cubes. Set aside 1 Liter of the broth. Cooked Vegetables with Grated Coconut (Urap) Ingredients * 8 oz fresh green beans * 8 oz bean sprouts * 4 carrots * 1 can bamboo shoots * ½ small cabbage * 1 cup fresh grated coconut * 1 small onion, finely chopped * ½ tsp. chilli sauce (sambal ulek) * 1 tsp. salt * 2 Tbs. lime juice * ½ tsp. dried shrimp paste (terasi)

Directions Wash bean sprouts, pinching of any brown tail. Pour boiling water over bean sprouts, then rinse under cold water tap. Drain well. String beans and cut diagonally or bite-size lengths and cook in lightly salted water until just tender. Beans should still be crisp to bite. Scrub carrot and cut into thin strips, cook until tender. Drain well. Slice cabbage, discard the center stem. Blanch in boiling salted water for a minute or two, until tender but not limp. Drain and refresh with cold water. Cut bamboo shoots into strips the same size as the beans. Place fresh grated coconut into a bowl, add onion, chili sauce, salt, lime juice and the shrimp paste which has been grilled for a few minutes, or heated in a dry frying pan. Mix thoroughly together. Sprinkle this grated coconut mixture over vegetables, reserving some to garnish the dish when served. Put vegetables in a steamer and steam for 5-8 minutes. BEIJING - China has said it will invest more than 100 billion dollars this year in 23 new infrastructure projects in impoverished western regions as part of efforts to boost domestic demand. The plan was announced Monday after Premier Wen Jiabao said the Chinese economy was facing an “extremely complicated” situation and two purchasing manager surveys showed manufacturing activity had slowed in June. The 682.2 billion yuan will

be used to build railways, roads, airports, coal mines, nuclear power stations and power grids, the National Development and Reform Commission said on its website. Construction will start this year to “actively expand domestic demand and promote the fast and healthy development of the western areas,” the top economic planning agency said. The areas include the northwestern region of Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Sichuan and Yunnan in the southwest. It is unclear whether the

spending is part of a 586-billiondollar government stimulus package unveiled in late 2008 to cushion the impact of the global financial crisis. China has long sought to boost development in the poorer western areas. It spent 2.2 trillion yuan on 120 major projects between 2000 and 2009, the statement said. State media reported last month that Beijing would pour around 10 billion yuan in economic aid into Xinjiang from 2011 in a bid to raise the living standards of the Uighur minority.

LONDON - A top economic forecaster has been appointed to the Bank of England committee which sets interest rates, the government announced on Monday. Martin Weale, director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), replaces Kate Barker, who left at the end of May, finance minister George Osborne announced in a statement. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will now have a total of nine members although Weale will not take part in the Bank of England’s latest rate-setting meeting due to start on Wednesday. His first appearance will be at the August meeting. Osborne said: “I am delighted that Dr Weale has agreed to join the Monetary Policy Committee. His experience of economic forecasting and data analysis derived from fif-

teen years as Director of the National Institute for Economic and Social Research will be extremely valuable to the Committee.” Barclays Capital analyst Simon Hayes said the appointment was “unlikely to shift policy debate”. He said: “Ahead of the June MPC meeting, Dr Weale said he believed policy should be left on hold because the upside risks to inflation from a persistently high headline rate were balanced by downside risks to growth from weakness in the euro area. “This would put him broadly in the middle of the MPC pack, in our view, and suggests that his ascendance to the committee is unlikely to provoke a shift in the policy debate in the near term,” added Hayes. The MPC is widely expected to leave the Bank of England’s key lending rate at a record-low level of 0.50 percent when it concludes its latest meeting on Thursday.

WELLINGTON New Zealand’s export-led recovery may be stalling, according to a business confidence survey released Tuesday. The New Zealand Institute of Economic Research’s quarterly survey of business opinion found renewed weakness in manufacturing, construction and investment intentions in the June quarter. Small firms, which usually lead the economic cycle, experienced weaker conditions in the three months to June, the survey found. “Firms are less optimistic as the economy has yet again failed to deliver on expectations of a strong recovery,” said the NZIER’s principal economist, Shamubeel Eaqub. “Seasonally adjusted business confidence eased from 36 percent to 28 percent. The recovery may be stalling. The outlook is still fragile.” The percentage is obtained by subtracting the percentage of respondents expecting business conditions to decline from those expecting an improvement. Eaqub said the economy would normally be expected to be recovering strongly at this stage of the cycle. The slowing momentum of global growth and financial market disruption also added risks to the outlook, the survey found. New Zealand slumped into recession at the start of 2008, emerging only in the second quarter of last

year, with recovery driven largely by agriculture-dominated exports, especially dairy products. But growth eased to 0.6 percent in the three months to March this year, down from 0.8 percent in the previous quarter. The NZIER’s warning came a day after the Treasury said belt-tightening around the world and possible government defaults on sovereign debt posed risks for the economy. Other economists interpreted the survey more optimistically, saying the results painted a picture of a mild economic recovery. “The current level of firms’ own assessment of trading conditions suggests economic growth over 2010 will still be reasonably healthy,” said ASB bank chief economist Nick Tuffley. ANZ bank economists said the results were still consistent with economic growth of three percent this year. “We would characterise today’s results as the reality of a slower recovery dawning on businesses, as opposed to the recovery itself coming under threat,” they said. But Eaqub said the central bank would need to take care not to stifle already weak domestic demand and derail a fragile export recovery, Eaqub said. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand raised the official interest rate last month for the first time in nearly three years from a record low of 2.5 percent as the economy entered its second year of recovery.

“Hannah Montana” starts final season as Miley moves on Reuters

LOS ANGELES – Four years ago, Miley Cyrus was a young unknown making her debut on a Disney Channel comedy series, “Hannah Montana,” with her real-life father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, playing her dad on the show.

The premise, an average teenager named Miley Stewart who moonlights as a rock star in a blonde wig named Hannah Montana, became an instant sensation. In no time at all, Cyrus was recording “Hannah Montana” soundtracks, embarking on a “Hannah Montana” singing tour, filming a concert movie and starring in a “Hannah Montana” feature film. Now it’s all about to come to an end. When season four, titled “Hannah Montana Forever,” premieres on Sunday, July 11, on Disney Channel, it will be the final one as Cyrus has been eager to do her own thing. In fact, she has started already. Cyrus, now 17, made her non“Hannah” feature film debut earlier this year in “The Last Song,” based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. She just released her third non-”Hannah” album, “Can’t be Tamed,” raising eyebrows with a music video of her in skimpy outfits being groped by back-up dancers. “I can’t base my career off of the six-year-olds,”

Cyrus told reporters recently. “It’s the 16-year-olds, the 26-year-olds I’m trying to reach for now. I have to move on.” The independently wealthy teenager just purchased her own home and said she plans to move into it after she wraps her current project, the independent film feature “LOL (Laughing Out Loud),” opposite Demi Moore. In the film, which is based on a French movie, Cyrus plays a teenager hanging out with the wrong crowd, dabbling in drugs and questionable boys. Miley Stewart must decide if she’s going to continue her Hannah persona, or join her best friend Lily in going to college. And there will be plenty of famous guest stars including singer Sheryl Crowe, hip hop star Iyaz, Ray Liotta, Christine Taylor, Dr. Phil McGraw, Jay Leno and Kelly Ripa. Vicki Lawrence and Dolly Parton return, with Parton singing a duet with Billy Ray. Also, expect a tribute to the military. Yet as much as Cyrus has already mentally moved on from the show, it was her decision to come back for one more go-around, despite already fulfilling her commitment to Disney at the end of season three. Her father said his daughter felt fans deserved another season to take the series to a conclusion, rather than leaving things open-ended. “This year didn’t have to happen, but we did it because we thought it was the right thing to do,” he said. “I left it up to Miley (to decide). LOS ANGELES – The next stage of Lindsay Lohan’s life is in a judge’s hands. The starlet is scheduled to appear Tuesday in a Beverly Hills, Calif., courtroom for a probation revocation hearing that could end with Lohan either headed for jail or her next movie role. The hearing is the culmination of several missteps by the 24-year-old actress, whose probation for a threeyear drug and alcohol case was revoked in May after she missed a hearing. She faces an increasingly impatient judge who has seemingly grown tired of the actress’ inability to complete the terms of her sentence, or appear in court on time. Lohan’s fate is far from decided though. The hearing Tuesday morning is likely to feature testimony and evidence about her conduct and progress with her probation. Los Angeles County district attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said a prosecutor could still decide not to seek jail time for Lohan. If Lohan is ordered jailed, she will be taken into custody immediately. The length of her stay will be determined by Lohan’s sentence, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore said. He said inmates serving nonviolent offenses typically serve about a quarter

of their sentence, although several factors are considered. Lohan spent 84 minutes in jail in 2007 after she pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of being under the influence of cocaine and no contest to two counts of driving with a blood-alcohol level above 0.08 percent and one count of reckless driving. The plea came after a pair of high-profile arrests earlier that year. She was sentenced to three years of probation, but had to ask for a yearlong extension in October after she failed to complete her alcohol-education courses on time. Prosecutor Danette Meyers warned Lohan at the time that she would face jail time if she violated her proba-

tion. If the actress remains free she could lose a hated accessory — an ankle alcohol monitor that she has been required to wear since late May. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel revoked Lohan’s probation in May after the actress missed a court hearing to promote a film project at the Cannes Film Festival. Lohan claimed her passport was stolen, but Revel ordered her to wear the alcohol monitor upon her return. She also scheduled the evidentiary hearing that will be held Tuesday morning to determine whether Lohan violated her probation, and to what extent. Weeks later, the monitor issued an alert after Lohan attended the MTV Movie Awards and its after-parties. Revel promptly doubled Lohan’s bail to $200,000. Prosecutors called it an “alcohol-related” violation, but Lohan’s attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, downplayed the incident. Chapman Holley was not available for comment last week. Regardless of the outcome, Tuesday’s hearing won’t be the last reminder for Lohan of the court case and her arrests. She will soon be questioned about her drug use three years ago by civil attorneys representing a woman suing Lohan. The actress’ attorney persuaded a judge to delay that deposition until after Tuesday’s hearing so that her answers couldn’t be used against her in the criminal case.

Britain’s tabloids reported that Cole, a judge along with Simon Cowell on the British reality talent show “The X Factor,” collapsed during a photoshoot for her album on Saturday. Researcher Edward Swing, a graduate student at Iowa State University, compared participants who watched TV or played video games less than two hours a day — the recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics for children aged 2 and older — to those who watched more. “Those who exceeded the AAP recommendation were about 1.6 times to 2.2 times more likely to have greater than average attention problems,” he said. The middle schoolers he studied were a little less likely than the col-

lege students to have attention problems with excess TV and video game participation. The study is published in the July issue of Pediatrics. Swing and his colleagues looked at two age groups. They assessed more than 1,300 children in the third, fourth and fifth grades over a 13-month time period. They also looked at 210 college students for a one-time evaluation. “The children were reporting their TV and video game use and the parents were also reporting TV and video game use,” Swing said. “The teachers were reporting attention problems,” he

said of the middle school students. Teachers reported if children had problems staying on task, paying attention, if they interrupted other children’s work, or showed problems in other areas that reflected trouble with attention. College students did self-reports on their attention problems. Middle school students spent an average of 4.26 hours a day watching TV or playing video games, the team found, while older students spent 4.82 hours daily. Previous studies have also linked screen time with attention problems. “There may well be a relation between television viewing and attention problems,” said Dr. David Elkind, professor emeritus of child development at Tufts University and author of The Power of Play.

NEW YORK – With a scorching holiday weekend in the rearview mirror, a real summer sizzle is about to wash over parts of the United States. After an extended Fourth of July weekend when temperatures inched into at least the 90s from Maine to Texas and into the Southwest and Death Valley, the midAtlantic is embarking on a string of intensely hot days, with temperatures in some places closing in on 100-plus degrees. Temperatures could reach as high as 102 degrees on Tuesday, meteorologists said, and Wednesday was forecast to be the most humid day of the stretch. And unlike on the long Independence Day weekend, when utilities had lower demand for power, the masses returning to work Tuesday amid the possible record-setting heat across the Northeast threatened to push utilities usage to record levels. TOKYO – Japan’s space agency said Monday it has found “minute particles” of what it hopes is asteroid dust in the capsule of the space probe Hayabusa which returned to Earth last month. Scientists hope any dust samples from the potato-shaped asteroid Itokawa could help reveal secrets about the origins of the solar system. “We have started the opening process of the sample container of Hayabusa since June 24, 2010 and confirmed there are minute particles,” the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said. But the agency added it remained unclear whether the particles are contaminants from Earth or come from Itokawa, which the space probe landed on during its multi-billionkilometre (mile) journey. It is expected to take months to get the fi-

nal results of the analysis. Hayabusa project manager Junichiro Kawaguchi said scientists believed materials from Earth were among the particles found in the pod. “But it’s important that it wasn’t empty... I’m glad that there is the possibility” that some are from the asteroid, Kawaguchi told a press briefing. Researchers have not fully opened the capsule yet but have found more than 10 specks visible to the naked eye, said another JAXA scientist, Toshifumi Mukai. Mukai conceded these particles may not have come from the asteroid. “I have a feeling that they are not cosmic dust,” he said, adding that it was also possible that they were from deep space. Separately, an electron microscope found two more minute particles, estimated to be slightly bigger than 10 microns each, scientists said. One micron is one-millionth of a metre. When Hayabusa was

launched in 2003, the canister was open, meaning it may contain materials that originated on Earth, a JAXA spokesman said. Technical problems plagued the journey of Hayabusa, which at one stage spun out of control and lost contact with JAXA for seven weeks, delaying the mission for three years until the asteroid and Earth re-aligned. When it finally latched onto the Itokawa asteroid, a pellet-firing system designed to stir up dust malfunctioned, leaving it unclear how much material the probe was able to gather. After a seven-year space odyssey, the heatproof pod was fired back to Earth by the Hayabusa probe in June. Researchers at JAXA’s Sagamihara Campus near Tokyo, have been opening the multi-layered canister in cooperation with US space agency NASA.

ERASMIA – Germany’s World Cup semi-final opponents Spain are far more dangerous than Argentina, with their game based on the world’s best teamwork and not just individual qualities, said coach Joachim Loew. Germany crushed the Argentines 4-0 in the last eight after stifling their playmaker Lionel Messi but Loew said European champions Spain were a completely different proposition. “They are the country with the greatest consistency for the past two to three years,” the 50-year-old told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s showdown in Durban. “Spain do not have one Messi. They have more than one Messi. Especially in attack there are many players who can decide a game. POTCHEFSTROOM – Spain’s World Cup semi-final against Germany is the most important soccer match in the nation’s history, more important even than their Euro 2008 victory, according to captain Iker Casillas. Their triumph two years ago, when they beat Germany in the final in Vienna, was their first major trophy in 44 years but goalkeeper Casillas said that was now part of history and the Spanish people wanted more. “People are not telling us how good we were at Euro 2008,” Casillas said in an interview published on the Spanish soccer federation’s website (www.rfef.es) on Monday. “People are saying we have to win the World Cup. The people want the World Cup,” he added. “We know that the Germany match is the most important in our history, even more than the Euro 2008 final in Austria.” Spain have already made history by progressing to a World Cup knockout semi-final for the first time and play the Germans on Wednesday in Durban for a place in the final at Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium on July 11. SPA, Belgium – Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel claimed the leader’s yellow jersey after winning yet another crash-marred stage of the Tour de France as the peloton called a truce in the wet Belgian Ardennes. US rider Christian Vande Velde was forced out of the race after breaking two ribs and suffering eye injuries after crashing twice. Vande Velde was among three team riders, including American Tyler Farrar and New Zealand’s Julian Dean, from the team who were taken to hospital for checks after dozens of competitors crashed on the slippery descents in the latter half of the 201km ride from Brussels to Spa in the Belgian Ardennes. “I’m not sure what I hit; I think it might have been a pole,” said 34-year-old Vande Velde, who had finished fourth on the Tour de France in 2008 and eighth in 2009 and had high hopes for this year’s race. “At that point my eye was bleeding pretty badly and the pain in my side and my back was excruciating. NEW YORK – While the top free agents are pondering their futures, the New York Knicks gave them something to think about. If LeBron James or Dwyane Wade comes to New York now, a dominant big man will be there waiting. Amare Stoudemire agreed Monday to sign with the Knicks for nearly $100 million, vowing to lead a rebirth in New York that the team hopes won’t have to be done alone. “This could help get the dominoes falling and he’d be a great teammate for somebody,” Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said. “We went after a very, very good free agent and you can’t tell what’s in other people’s minds, but we do know that if you’re serious about winning, we’ve got a piece that helps you do that.” The Knicks said they intend to sign Stoudemire to a contract later this week when the free agent moratorium period ends. His agent, Happy Walters, said the deal is for the maximum allowed, which would be about $99.7 million over five years. Stoudemire has already started recruiting, saying he spoke to James’ people and directly to Wade last

week. Alonso optimistic of strong Silverstone Fernando Alonso is optimistic of a good result at Silverstone this weekend although the Spaniard admits that the new-look layout at the Northamptonshire circuit may not be well-suited to Ferrari’s F10. Alonso heads for the British GP eager to continue the run of success enjoyed by Spanish sportsmen in recent weeks, with the nation’s football team having reached the World Cup semi-finals, Rafael Nadal having won Wimbledon and Jorge Lorenzo having taken a dominant MotoGP win at Catalunya. While the double champion admits that the new Arena circuit may not be ideally suited to Ferrari, he remains optimistic of being able to fight towards the front with no-one knowing where they really stand until the cars hit the track for the first time. “At Silverstone, we will discover a circuit whose final section has been modified,” he said. “Along

with the engineers, we have spent these few days studying all the characteristics of the new track layout, analysing the available information, including watching the motorcycle races held there a few weeks ago. “On Thursday morning, again with my engineers, we will inspect the track to see everything in detail, looking especially for bumps on the racing line. The track seems reasonably similar to the way it was, with a lot of very fast corners, which will not suit us that much. However, it’s a fact that the configuration of the F10 seen in Valencia should give us a boost in these quick corners, so it is best to wait and see where we will be: I remain optimistic. issue put more weight on the front, it was very difficult to control - I was always at the limit. Then at turn nine of 15 lap I went a little bit over the limit and crashed. “It’s a pity but I have to take the positives from today - and fighting at the front of the race is where we want to be and we achieved that for a time today. Anyway, I’m happy with my performance, and I’m sorry for the team because we are all working hard. Next time we’ll aim to be back up front again.”
