‘Murder on the Orient Express’ breathes new cinematic life into Agatha Christie LONDON - Agatha Christie, the author dubbed the ‘Queen of Crime,’ is returning to the big screen after a decades-long absence with an adaptation of “Murder on the Orient Express,” directed by Kenneth Brannagh. Starring Brannagh as eccentric detective Hercule Poirot, the film premiered in London on Thursday and features a star-studded cast, including Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and “The Force Awakens” star Daisy Ridley. “Previous film versions have been romps and they’ve been wonderful, but it felt like with this group of actors it could get a little more dark and a little more emotional, and surprise and divert in a different way,” Brannagh told Reuters at the film’s premiere. A ‘whodunit’ tale, the film follows Brannagh’s detective as he seeks to unmask a murderer among the passengers on board the glamor-
ous train, trapped by an avalanche in mountainous terrain in southern Europe. Christie, who died in 1976 aged 85, is cited by the Guinness Book of World Records as the bestselling novelist of all time. Over 30 feature films have been based on her work, including a 1974 version of “Murder on the Orient Express,” that saw Ingrid Bergman win an Academy Award for her performance. Despite a rich pedigree in print, film and television, Brannagh’s film represents something of a cinematic resurrection for Christie’s work, with the most recent previous cinematic adaptation being 1985’s “Ordeal by Innocence.” “It’s been 30 years, I guess, since we’ve had a proper cinema film,” said James Prichard, Christie’s great grandson and CEO of Agatha Christie Ltd., the company which manages the rights to her works. The game, in which players fight zombies that are superimposed onto the real world on smartphone screens, is tapping into the trend of augmented reality (AR) which gained mass adoption last year with the release of Niantic Inc’s Pokemon Go. Next Games said the “Walking Dead: Our World” game, which it hopes will mirror Pokemon Go’s success, will be available for test users on Apple’s App Store and
Google Play in selected regions by January before a wider release later next year. The TV show tells the story of a world overrun by zombies, and the new game will use AR technology to let players battle the zombie characters in real world environments. Based on the same show, Next Games has previously developed a mobile strategy game which has been downloaded by more than 16
million users. “I have an optimistic view on (the new game‘s) potential. I expect this game to reach similar levels of revenue to their previous game,” said analyst Jerker Salokivi at Evli brokerage, with a “hold” rating on the stock. Shares in the company, which was listed in March, jumped more than 100 percent in August after the company released its first video trailer of the upcoming game. The stock fell more than 7 percent on Friday as the company reported a loss from the first nine months of the year due to investments in game development. (rtr)

Lebanon PM Hariri resigns, assails Iran and Hezbollah
BEIRUT - Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri resigned on Saturday, saying he believed there was an assassination plot against him and accusing Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah of sowing strife in the Arab world. His resignation, a big surprise to Beirut’s political establishment, brought down the coalition government and plunged Lebanon into a new political crisis. It thrust Lebanon into the front line of a regional competition between Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shi’ite Iran that has also buffeted Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Bahrain. A Saudi government minister said Hariri was in Riyadh to ensure his safety. Hariri, who is closely allied with Saudi Arabia, alleged in a broadcast from an undisclosed location that Hezbollah was “directing weapons” at Yemenis, Syrians and Lebanese. In comments directed at Iran, he said the Arab world would “cut off the hands that wickedly extend to it”. Hariri’s coalition, which took office last year, grouped nearly all of Lebanon’s main parties, including Hezbollah. It took office in a political deal that made Michel Aoun, a Hezbollah ally, president, and was seen as a victory for Iran.
The resignation risks exacerbating sectarian tensions between Sunni and Shi’ite Muslims and returning Lebanon to paralysis in government. An official at the U.S. State Department said it was following the situation closely and noted that Hariri had been a “strong partner in building strong national state institutions and in the war on terror”. The official added “the United States expects an orderly political process in Lebanon and will remain supportive of the legitimate institutions of
the Lebanese state”. It was not immediately clear who might succeed Hariri, Lebanon’s most influential Sunni politician. The prime minister must be a Sunni in Lebanon’s sectarian system. Aoun must appoint the candidate with most support among MPs, who he is expected to consult in the coming days. “We are living in a climate similar to the atmosphere that prevailed before the assassination of martyr Rafik al-Hariri. I have sensed what is being plotted covertly to target
my life,” Hariri said. Rafik al-Hariri was killed in a 2005 Beirut bomb attack that pushed his son Saad into politics and set off years of turmoil. A U.N.-backed tribunal has charged five Hezbollah members over the killing. Hezbollah denies involvement. The Saudi-owned pan-Arab television channel al-Arabiya alHadath reported that an assassination plot against Hariri was foiled in Beirut days ago, citing an unnamed source. Saudi Arabia’s Gulf Affairs Minister Thamer al-Sabhan said in a television interview that Hariri’s personal security detail had “confirmed information” of a plot to kill him. Lebanon’s internal security force said in a statement on the reports that it had no information about the matter. Hariri said Hezbollah and Iran
had brought Lebanon into the “eye of a storm” of international sanctions. Iran was sowing strife, destruction and ruin wherever it went and he accused it of a “deep hatred for the Arab nation”. Aoun’s office said Hariri had called him from “outside Lebanon” to inform him of his resignation. After Galungan, 129,000 Mount Agung evacuees remain
AMLAPURA - The number of people who were evacuated from villages near Mount Agung to evacuation posts continues to decline. After Galungan, tens of thousands of evacuees returned home. According to the latest data on evacuees from Emergency Response Taskforce, as of Friday (Nov. 3) at 18:00, there were 129,109 people in 380 evacuation posts across Bali. Before Galungan, there were 139,995 people living in evacuation posts, then the number dropped slightly to 134,310 and continued to decline as Galungan approached. Following the decline in the alert level of Mount Agung to watch, residents of disaster-prone area (KRB) II and I were granted permission to return home. The Mount Agung Eruption Taskforce estimates that the number of refugees will continue to decrease because the number of residents of KBR III areas only amounts to some 50,000 people, while everyone else can go home. Referring to the recent data, The number of villages in the watch zone finally increased to 15 villages, while the number of refugees in this zone is estimated to be no more than 60,000 people. Data are being updated for every village in the watch zone in order to get detailed territorial data for every administrative hamlet. It will
therefore become clearer who remains in evacuation and how has hone home. There seems to still be quite a lot of people who are still living in evacuation posts. Regent of Karangasem, I Gusti Ayu Mas Sumatri, recently said that this is likely due to several factors including the fact that Mount Agung’s volcanic activity is fluctuating so residents from KBR II and II areas remain in doubt about the safety of going home even thought eh alert level has decreased to ‘watch’. There is also the matter of having children moving back and forth, Many children have already adapted to their new schools, so parents are reluctant to disrupt this process to home when they fear that they may have to evacuate again. “ Most evacuees that I have met with want to be sure that Mount Agung is back to normal and that it is really safe to go home”, said Sumatri. The regent admitted that one of the challenges is convincing residents of (disaster-prone) KBR I and KBR II areas to go home. Residents of KBR III areas are much more willing to go home, she said. “Some residents even cried and told me that they would prefer dying at home than living with uncertainty at the evacuation posts. Such attitudes are mostly expressed by the elderly, she said. Some who were forced to evacuate, did not want to eat at the evacuation posts, go sick and died. I heard this from people while doing site inspections”” said Regent Mas Sumatri. (kmb31)

BPBD Bali dismantles evacuation tents at Les village
SINGARAJA - The tents that were previously occupied by thousands of refugees at Les village, in the sub-district of Tejakula, were dismantled on Friday (Nov. 3), following the decrease of the alert level for Mount Agung from ‘warning’ to ‘watch’. The tents belinging to the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Gianyar, Karangasem, Tabanan and Bali’s provincial government were all taken down, while those belonging to the BPBD Bulelelng and the Social Agency and Health Agency, will be taken down soon. Chief Executive of BPBD Buleleng, Made Subur, explained that the tents will remain on site at Les Village in case the alert level is raised again or if there is an eruption. A surveillance tent is also being set up so that officers can guard the evacuation post. The government of Karangasem will also be informed that the site is ready to accommodate evacuees
at any time. “Although the tents are being taken down, we will remain on alert until the condition of Mount Agung is declared normal again. We cannot be sure that the alert level will not be raised again as nature is unpredictable. Once conditions are back to normal then we can celar all the tents form the evacuation post” he said. As reported previously, Les village can had been accommodating some 1,765 evacuees from Ban, Sukadana, Baturinggit and other villages in Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem who were then transferred to more appropriate shelters. The government is now considering Les village as an emergency evacuation post in the case of an eruption. The evacuees who had been staying at the Les Village post are now dispersed in several villages in the subdistrict of Tejakula: Sambirenteng, Bondalem, Tejakula, Julah and Pacung village. (kmb)

The GALUNGAN holiday was enjoyed by school children joyfully. Those who are still living in evacuation posts had little or nothing to do and over the school break, they just sat around with their parents, occasionally playing with the other children. Evacuation post coordinator at the Agriculture Office for Rendang village, Karangasem, I Nengah Sama, said on Saturday (Nov. 4) that the children who are still living in the evacuation posts had nothing to do. Previously, volunteers had been providing entertainment and games but over the Galungan holiday there were not special activities. “Before Galungan the children would attend school or at least play with the other children, but because of the school break, they had nothing to do but sit around with their parents”, said Sama One young student evacuee named, Ni Putu Rika Pandayani, said that during the Galungan holiday she had nothing to do so she just stayed in the evacuation camp. Before Galungan she had nothing to do in the morning but was attending school in the
afternoon. “Before I was going to school everyday, but now that we are on holiday I don’t have any activities. Sometimes I will read a book and then take a read. After Galungan we can get back to our regular activity – I mean go back to school” said this ninth grade student from the SMPN 2 Rendang junior high school. Another evacuee named I Putu Dede Hendrawan also said that there were no special activities during Galungan. “ Since the Galungan holidays, we have nothing to do , so we just go to the river to get water to wash and cook” said Dede. Subdistrict head of Rendang, I Wayan Mastra, said that he has yet to receive the latest data on the number of people living in evacuation posts in the sub-district of Rendang since the alert level for Mount Agung was decreased from ‘warning’ to ‘watch’. “We do not know for sure how m any people are still in evacuation posts and how many have returned home as we are still collecting data” said Mastra. Decrease of Mount Agung’s alert level uninfluential Independent refugees have returned home from last month

With the development of technology and globalization era, mepatung tradition has gradually disappeared. To that end, the mepatung tradition needs to be preserved.
National Museum of Anthropology MEXICO - The National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropologia) in Mexico City contains the world’s largest collection of ancient Mexican art and also has ethnographic exhibits about Mexico’s present-day indigenous groups. There is a hall dedicated to each of the cultural regions of Mesoamerica and the ethnological exhibits are located on the second floor. You could easily spend a full day, but you should at least dedicate a few hours to exploring this museum. The Anthropology Museum is one of our picks for Top Ten Mexico City Sights.

The National Museum of Anthropology has 23 permanent exhibit halls. Archaeology exhibits are located on the ground floor and ethnographic exhibits about present-day indigenous groups in Mexico are on the upper level. When you enter the museum, the rooms on the right hand side show the cultures that developed in Central Mexico and are organized in chronological order. Start on the right and make your way around counter-clockwise to get a feel for how the cultures changed over time, culminating in the Mexica (Aztec) exhibit, full of monumental stone
The museum is located on Avenida Paseo de la Reforma and Calzada Gandhi, in the Colonia Chapultepec Polanco. It is considered to be within Chapultepec Park’s Primera Seccion (First Section), though it is just outside the gates of the park (across the street). Getting there:
Take the metro to either Chapultepec or Auditorio station and follow the signs from there. The Turibus is also a good option for transportation. There is a stop just outside the museum.
Admission:
Admission is 70 pesos, free for seniors over 60 holding an INAPAM card, students and teachers affiliated with a Mexican school, and children under 13. Admission is free on Sundays for Mexican citizens and residents (bring an ID to prove residency). Services at the Museum:
Guide Service: There are usually tour guides on site offering their services. Be sure to hire only guides who are recognized by the Mexican Secretary of Tourism - they should be wearing a badge. Gift shop: The museum’s gift shop is located near the entrance and is open from 10 am to 7 pm. A variety of gifts, reproductions of museum pieces, books and magazines are for sale. Restaurant: The Anthropology Museum has a good (not inexpensive) restaurant located on the ground floor, open 10 am to 6 pm. mepatung tradition begins to vanish
MANGUPURA — Balinese people have been quite familiar with mepatung or joint pig slaughter in the series of Galungan celebration from the past. However, in keeping with the development of technology and globalization era, this tradition has gradually disappeared. To that end, the mepatung tradition needs to be preserved. According to the Chief of LPD Kedonganan, Ketut Madra, who met amid his bustles to distribute pork to Kedonganan residents on Monday (Oct. 30), if the tradition disappears he is confident the community will run individually. In addition, they will also be easily influenced by capitalism that can cause the communal concept to disappear. “Mepatung is our form of building the LPD having the impact on the mebat (food preparation) tradition with the spirit of togetherness and shared ownership. These two concepts will certainly result in togetherness,” he said. Associated with the Penampahan Galungan day, mepatung tradition is admitted to realize the implementation of Panca Yadnya (five sacrifices). Every celebration of Galungan, the LPD Kedonganan usually implements mepatung for food preparation used to support the panca yadnya ritual. To Kedonganan community, the concept of mapatung can raise three spirits namely joining together, doing together and owning together. The basis of these three spirits is the same namely togetherness. It is the realization of prarem (addendum to customary bylaw) and management of financial institutions like
the LPD. “The advancement of LPD Kedonganan today is inseparable from the development effort carried out by the management and the employees only, but also the local community. Therefore, the synergy established by customary village, customary apparatus, supervisory board and the community must be well guarded,” he added. This time, the implementation of mepatung tradition, he said, simultaneously implements the prarem of Kedonganan customary village established by Kedonganan customary village in 2017. Vision of the prarem implementation is to make the LPD Kedonganan healthy, strong, tough and useful in realizing the panca kertha and supporting the implementation of Panca Yadnya. “In the context of implementing the panca kertha or five orders, there are five elements need to implemented, namely the Kertha Angga (employee order), Kertha Warga (community order), Kertha Desa (village order), Kertha Bhuwana (universal order) and Kertha Wisesa. One of the five orders we’ve done belong to the elements of kertha angga and kertha warga. Kerta warga is core member of Kedonganan customary village while kerta angga is the customary villagers getting involved in the LPD management,” he said. For this Galungan, the meat distributed amounts to 7,050 kg to a total of 2,350 people where each resident gets a share of 3 kg of pork and cash worth IDR 50,000 to purchase spices. (kmb23)
TABANAN — The decline in the alert level of Mt. Agung from warning to watch seems not very influential on independent refugees in the Tabanan district. The data in a number of subdistricts in Tabanan such as Baturiti, Pupuan and Tabanan, have showed the decline in the number of refugees since a month ago. For example, subdistrict head of Baturiti, I Ketut Ridia, said the data of refugee have been decreasing since last month, from 1,477 people to only 1,261 people. “Possibly, there are refugees returning home on the religious holiday for prayers in their respective village,” he said on the sidelines of attending the plenary session on Monday. However, Ridia affirmed that refugees are always asked to make a report to the evacuation post when they are going out or entering the refugee camp. “Although you are staying in the house of relatives, please keep reporting when wishing to go back to Karangasem,” he said. The decrease in the number of refugees also occurred in Pupuan and Tabanan subdistrict. Subdistrict head of Pupuan, Hendra Manik, said that since the last two weeks the number of refugees has decreased. “One hundred refugees have returned home. According to the last data, in Pupuan there are only 425 refugees staying with their relatives,” he said. In the meantime, in Tabanan subdistrict, there are a total of 21 families accommodated in Tabanan refugee camp, in Wantilan of Tabanan customary village, but now they have entirely returned home. “From five families reduced to four. Ngurah Made Sucita, said that his agency has prepared three units of BPBD vehicle to facilitate the homecoming of refugees if needed. “Until now, no one asks to return home and most of them have gone home with their own vehicles,” he said. Total number of refugees in Tabanan district based on the latest data of BPBD reached 4,072 people spreading across 10 subdistricts. Currently, continued Sucita, the BPBD staff also continues to check in order to get valid data on the number of refugees remaining to exist in Tabanan. In the meantime, two days ahead of Galungan, a number of refugees in Marga region could still feel the atmosphere of Galungan holiday. At Kukuh village, Marga, for instance, the refugees were given a pig weighing 116 kilograms to be slaughtered and divided. The pig for the friends from Karangasem was donated by one of the Tabanan residents. Representative of the refugees, Ketut Purna, thanked for the pig donation delivered by headman of Kukuh Marga, I Made Sugianto. According to residents from Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem, during their temporary stay at Kukuh village, they have received much attention from local residents, volunteers and village officials. In addition to basic food aid, school uniforms, as well as regular examination and treatment from Marga II Public Health Center, they were also given the assistance by the Kukuh village apparatus when two refugees were hospitalized and had outpatient treatment in the Tabanan Hospital. Headman of Kukuh, I Made Sugianto, explained that the number of Karangasem residents temporarily staying at Kukuh due to warning alert level of Mount Agung reached 113 people. They live independently and in relative’s home at six locations namely the hamlet of Lodalang, Tengah, Munggal, Tegal, Denuman and Tatag. Then, on Penyajaan Galungan, Monday (Oct. 30) some have returned home to celebrate Galungan. “Today there are 17 families remaining to stay at Kukuh village. STORIES of Karangasem residents who fled to Klungkung district along with the increased activity of Mount Agung are quite a lot. Aside from losing a job, some residents also sold their livestock at cheap price. However, many children are also willing to move their school for education. They do this as wishing to realize their dream. Stepping on the sixth week, Karangasem residents living on the slopes of Mount Agung are still evacuating in Klungkung district. They are not only adults and the elderly, but also children of school age. Although far from their birthplace, they still have the lucky side when living in the location they had never dreamed of. It does not happen because they are given food for life, but they can still enjoy education and none drops out. More interestingly, during that period of time a number of children do not only attend class in one school, but should learn nomadically as experienced by Komang Darmawan, 15, a student of SMPN 2 Selat junior high school from Sebudi village. Having studied for three weeks at SMPN 2 Semara-
pura, this student evacuating in Swecapura Stadium moved back to SMPN 1 Sidemen, Karangasem. It takes about 25 minutes by motorcycle. “The moving is on the appeal of headmaster, so that we can meet together with my schoolmates again,” he said on Saturday (Nov. 4). Such reality does not make him frustrated. His passion for learning is still fervent. It is used as a provision to reach his ideal as a reliable mechanic in the future. “After graduating from junior high school, I want to continue to vocational school majoring in mechanical engineering. I want to be a mechanic,” he said. For school tuition, this ninth grade student relies on the government assistance through the family’s hope program amounting
to IDR 700,000 per month. This is greeted cheerfully and encourages his passion for school. “Hopefully, I can get another scholarship as well,” he added. Similar condition is also experienced by I Gede Agus Arsana Putra, 18. This twelfth grade student from Geriana Kangin hamlet, North Duda, had a temporary education at SMAN 1 Dawan high school. After three weeks, he moved back to SMAN 1 Sidemen. “Formerly, I attended school in SMAN 1 Selat,” he said when met at the evacuation post in Lebah hamlet, Semarapura Kangin. This compact gas station was inaugurated in line with the single-price fuel program launched by the government to seek price equity throughout Indonesia. This 3T compact gas station does not only provide subsidized Premium and diesel fuel but also provides special fuel such as Pertalite, Pertamax and Dexlite. “Apart from the 3T areas, Nusa Penida is also a tourism area in need of the support in terms of quality fuel for tourism activities in the area,” said Gigih Wahyu Hari Irianto, Senior Vice President of Fuel Marketing & Distribution when inaugurating the 3T compact gas station in Nusa Penida, Klungkung, on Saturday (Nov. 4). Currently, the realization of fuel needs in Nusa Penida reaches 400 KL for Premium and 64 KL for diesel product. With the addition of this 3T compact gas station, there will be additional 100 KL of Premium and 50 KL of diesel fuel where the volume is adjusted to the needs and consumption. In the region of MOR V, the single-price fuel program has been implemented in four regions of the six points planned namely the Labuhan Badas, Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara, Waingapu, East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, Sumenep, East Java and Klungkung, Nusa Penida. In the future, it will be conducted on Sapudi Island, East Java and Belu, Atambua, East Nusa Tenggara. The missile was brought down near King Khaled Airport on the northern outskirts of the city and did not cause any casualties, said Saudi state-owned Al Ekhbariya TV. Rocket fragments fell near the airport grounds, but air traffic carried on normally, the Saudi civil aviation authority said on its official Twitter account. Saudi Arabia is part of a coalition carrying out bombings of the Iran-allied armed Houthi movement in Yemen which has taken over the capital Sanaa and other parts of the country during its civil war. Saudi Arabia, which supports the internationally-recognised Yemeni government based in Aden, has frequently intercepted missiles fired from its neighbour. Residents of northern Riyadh reported hearing a single deafening explosion that rattled windows around 20:20 local time, followed by rumbling and other sounds. “We heard an enormous loud boom and went outside, then heard a low rumbling noise like thunder and six to 12 smaller explosions,” one resident told Reuters. HUE - Floods inundated swathes of central and southern Vietnam on Sunday in the wake of a typhoon that left at least 27 dead just days before the region is due to host the APEC summit of Asia-Pacific leaders. Typhoon Damrey, the 12th major storm to hit Vietnam this year, made landfall on Saturday with winds of up to 90 km/h (56 mph) that damaged more than 40,000 homes, knocked down electricity poles and uprooted trees. The communist state’s Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention said 27 people were now counted dead and 22 were missing. It said 626 houses had collapsed entirely in a trail of destruction that has forced the evacuation of more than 30,000 people. Heavy rain and high winds lashed the coastal strip on Sunday. Some streets in the ancient capital of Hue were waist deep in water while in the old trading town of Hoi An, another popular tourist attraction, people boated in the streets. “This is the worst it has been for many years. The waters rose very fast,” said Nguyen Thi Thuan, 64, sitting on one chair and with her feet on another as waters lapped

BUSINESS Central bankers on the move, but where’s the inflation?
LONDON - Now the Bank of England has raised interest rates for the first time in a decade, it is beyond doubt major central banks in industrialised economies are eager to shift away from ultra-easy policy. But the fact the decision was so contested both in and outside the BoE perhaps reveals more concern about the lack of inflation pressure than about Britain’s clear difficulty in trying to leave the European Union without a concrete plan. The majority of those who argued against higher rates in Britain started with the fact abovetarget inflation is a result of sharply higher import prices due to the tumble in the pound since the June 2016 vote to leave the EU. A lack of domestic inflation pressure from higher wage deals remains as plain as ever, as does the ongoing lack of inflationary drift from the global economy, where trade is down from boom years but cheap labour remains plentiful. Among those who carefully follow Britain’s peers in the Group of Seven industrialised economies, notably the United States and those in the euro zone, the lack of inflation is real and striking, corroborated by a recent Reuters poll of over 500 forecasters around the world. News that Jerome Powell will be taking over as Federal Reserve chair from Janet Yellen does nothing to change the fact core inflation on the central bank’s preferred measure has fallen back to 1.3 percent. That is where it was the month before the Fed started raising rates nearly two years ago. The Bank of Canada has delivered two interest rate hikes this year - the July one more of a surprise than the follow-up in September - but growth has since flatlined and there’s no sign of core inflation picking up there either. Led by President Mario Draghi, the European Central Bank has just skillfully engineered a broad ac-

The ECB even has a “core core” measure it looks at that strips out a litany of pesky components holding inflation down, and even that is not offering much encouragement. If Japan still hasn’t escaped from two lost decades of near-zero pricing power, even after the authorities have thrown the kitchen, bathroom and garage sinks at it, isn’t the logical conclusion that central banks aren’t in control of inflation? That is the challenge the BoE will have in coming months: persuading anyone who will listen that by raising rates a tiny amount from near-zero to just a little above zero it was instrumental in bringing UK inflation under control.

Obviously more symbolic at this stage than statistical, its recent acquisition of Whole Foods,
a grocery brand more associated with “posh” and “expensive”, should also be a reminder of where the path of least resistance lies. The other clear disinflationary risk, even if price pressure does pick up in the interim, is that on more than a few measures global asset prices look extremely stretched. “Equity investors are trying to have their cake and eat it,” economists at Fathom, an investment consultancy, say in a note. “They are betting, simultaneously, that real rates of interest will never rise materially above zero, while the major economies will continue to enjoy positive, if not stellar real rates of economic growth. MADRID - Registered unemployment rose sharply in Catalonia in October, data showed on Friday, with more people signing on as jobless in the region than anywhere else in Spain as companies fled in the midst of the country’s worst political crisis in decades. Almost 2,000 companies based in Catalonia moved their legal headquarters out of the region in October after an independence vote banned by Madrid that led to the central government sacking regional authorities and taking control. The number of people in Spain registering as jobless rose for the third straight month by 1.67 percent in October from a month earlier, or by 56,844 people, leaving 3.47 million
people out of work, data from the Labour Ministry showed. Of that, Catalonia saw unemployment rise by 3.67 percent, or 14,698 people, the largest loss of jobs amongst all the regions and compared to a just 0.08 percent rise in jobless in the region of Madrid. The Bank of Spain warned on Thursday that uncertainty due to the independence drive, if it persists, could lead to slower economic growth and lower job creation in the next few months. October often sees a continuation of rising unemployment after the summer tourist sector lays off temporary workers in hotels and restaurants. Registered jobless rose strongest in the service sector, with a 2.2 percent
monthly rise, or by 50,885 people, followed by agriculture, marking the end of summer harvests, up 5.83 percent, or 9,194 people. In Spain, the number of people paying in to the social security system as workers in Spain rose by 94,368 people, to 18.43 million people, the ministry said. In seasonally adjusted terms, Spain’s registered unemployed fell by 23,690 people in October from a month earlier. Spain’s unemployment rate, taken from a wide survey of the workforce a considered a more accurate representation of the country’s unemployed than the monthly figure, fell to its lowest since 2008 in the third quarter at 16.38 percent.(rtr)

Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon, A Unique Tradition to Invoke Fertility at Kapal Village
Bleganjur gamelan music was played. Hundreds of villagers then threw tipat (rice bag) bantal (pillow-like cake) each other. Although, they seemed to mutually reciprocate, between the two camps (people in the north and south) did not keep any revenge. Their throw was not focused on particular person, but to the air above the opposite camp. Although this looked like a war, they cheered each other due to excitement. It is the atmosphere of the Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon ritual or often known as the Siat Tipat Bantal at Kapal customary village, Mengwi, Badung district, Thursday (Oct. 5). Hundreds of Kapal customary villagers were involved in the Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon. In addition to the community, this unique tradition was also attended by the Regional Secretary of Badung district, Wayan Adi Arnawa. The ritual was followed by all Kapal customary villagers. All the villagers were then divided into two camps, namely the northern camp and southern camp. At first, the two camps held a ceremony in the temple and were then resumed with worship at the outermost courtyard of the Desa/Puseh temple of Kapal. Thousands of tipat and bantal were prepared by the temple apparatus. After dividing them, they were thrown each other like a war accompanied with bleganjur gamelan music. Chief of Kapal customary village, Ketut Sudarsana, said that Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon formerly known as perang tipat (tipat war) is an annual ritual having been carried out for generations at Kapal customary village. This tradition is then preserved, so that it is always carried out by the Kapal customary village. “This activity aims to invoke prosperity for all customary villagers of Kapal,” he said. Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon has the meaning of offerings or an expression of gratitude
before God in his manifestation as Lord Shiva. Aci means ‘offering,’ Tabuh means ‘echoing,’ Rah means ‘power’ and Pengangon is another name of Lord Shiva. “Mutual throw of tipat and bantal is aimed to bring together the symbol of pradhana (female) and purusha (male), resulting in fertility,” he explained. Ketut Sudarsana asserted that Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon is held by customary village because all the villages participated to enjoy the welfare. It is bringing together the tipat as symbol of ocean, pradhana (female) and bantal as symbol of mountain, purusha (male). Uniting the ocean and mountain is believed to be able to create life. “Two differ-
ent things will present a life that can produce a good life,” he said. Tipat and bantal thrown are not to target the opponent’s body but to make them both merge in the air and then fall to the ground. This symbolizes the rendezvous of purusha and pradhana which then produces a seed of life. Remnants of the scattered tipat and bantal are the collected again. Those remaining intact are distributed back to residents for consumption, while the infeasible ones are distributed to residents to be scattered in paddy fields and used as animal feed. It is meant to invoke a good life seed for residents, animals and plants. Sudarsana explained the tradition was
started to be implemented in 1339. It marked the arrival of prime minister of Singasari dynasty in Bali, namely Ki Kebo Waruya. He received a mandate from the Balinese King named Asta Sura Ratna Bumi Banten to renovate the Purusada Temple at Kapal village. When arriving at Kapal, his heart was touched when seeing the condition of local village experiencing famine season. Seeing such condition, he then invoked to deity abiding at Purusada Temple in order to bestow his graces. After applying for it, he was given instructions to perform the aci or ritual dedicated to Lord Shiva by means of tipat and bantal followed by all the Kapal customary villagers. (kmb)

An old gamelan instrument called Caruk made its first appearance at the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) this year. The Caruk gamelan
troupe from Pau Village, Banjarangkan performed music that is rarely heard, on the Amgsoka stage of the Denpsar Art Center.
“The caruk gamelan instrument is estimated to have originated in the fifteenth century and this is the fifth generation of this particular gamelan troupe” explained art coordinator of Pau customary village, Nengah Sukirta. Pau Village and Tangkas Village are the only places in Klungkung where caruk gamlean can be found, said Sukirta adding that they are only played for Deva Yajna and Pitri Yajna religious cermonies. “For Pitri Yajna rituals, caruk gamelan is played during the cremation ceremony during menek tumpang salu, menek bea and mapurwadaksina rites that culminate in the nyekah ritual. For Dewa Yajna rituals, caruk gamelan is played during the mamungkah rite. It is played at the peak of the ritual
when the deities circle the offerings clockwise –known as murwa daksina” he elaborated. Head of Pau customary village’s caruk gamelan troupe, I Wayan Suendra, said that this gamelan instrument is a rare and sacred instrument. Caruk gamelan consists of two small xylophones and one saron that are always played together. “We also have an extra player so for the BAF performance there were four musicians” he Suendra. Suendra added that nine different caruk gamelan compositions were handed down by the ancestors, however because the palm-leaf manuscripts on which they were written are hard to read, only five of the compositions are played. All five were performed at this year’s BAF: the Tabuh Ririgan,
Tabuh Rejang, Tabuh Ombak Segara, Tabuh Panji Marga and Tabuh Manu Kaba. “For a very long time only five of the compositions can be played because of the difficulty in reading the lontars, but we are determined to find a way to read the others so that we can perform them in next year’s BAF”, explained Suendra. Currently, there are only four people in Pau customary village who are actively involved playing gamelan so Suendra is eager to encourage younger people to learn to play. “The notation for caruk gamelan music is different than other gamelan so it is harder to learn. It takes many years to master. After the BAF we will start to teach young children, which may take even longer”, he said. (kmb)

KAWAGOE - U.S. President Donald Trump ramped up his tough rhetoric against North Korea when he arrived in Japan on Sunday, saying that the United States and its allies are prepared to defend freedom and that “no dictator” should underestimate U.S. resolve.

Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed detained in corruption inquiry RIYADH - Saudi authorities detained a billionaire global investor and the head of the National Guard as part of an anticorruption purge that consolidates Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s hold on power. Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who owns investment firm Kingdom Holding, was among 11 princes, four ministers and tens of former ministers detained, two senior Saudi officials told Reuters on Sunday. A top security official, Prince Miteb bin Abdullah, was detained and replaced as minister of the powerful National Guard by Prince Khaled bin Ayyaf. This consolidates Prince Mohammed’s bin Salman’s control of security institutions which had previously been headed by separate branches of the ruling family. News of the purge came in the early hours of Sunday after King Salman decreed the creation of an anti-corruption committee chaired by his 32-year-old son Prince Mohammed, who has amassed power since rising from obscurity less than three years ago. The new body was given broad powers to investigate cases, issue arrest warrants and travel restrictions and freeze assets. “The homeland will not exist unless corruption is uprooted and the corrupt are held accountable,” the royal decree said. Analysts said the goal of the purge went beyond corruption and aimed to remove potential opposition to Prince Mohammed as he pushes an ambitious and controversial reform agenda. In September he announced that a ban on women driving would be lifted and he is trying to break decades of conservative tradition by promoting public entertainment and visits by foreign tourists. In economic policy, he has slashed state spending in some areas and plans a big sale of state assets. “The most recent crackdown breaks with the tradition of consensus within the ruling family whose secretive inner workings are equivalent to those of the Kremlin at the time of the Soviet Union,” wrote James Dorsey, a senior fellow at Singapore’s S. One in five Indonesian students support Islamic caliphate - survey
JAKARTA - Nearly 20 percent of high school and university students in Indonesia support the establishment of a caliphate in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country over the current secular government, a new survey showed this week. Indonesia has in recent years seen its long-standing reputation for religious tolerance come under scrutiny as hardline Islamic groups muscle their way into public and political life in the young democracy. The vast majority of Indonesians practice a moderate form of Islam and
the country has sizeable minorities of Hindus, Christians, and people who
adhere to traditional beliefs. Religious diversity is enshrined in its constitution. The survey by a Jakarta-based organization polled over 4,200 Muslim students, mostly in top schools and universities on Java island, home to over half the country’s population. Nearly one in four students said they were, to varying degrees, ready to wage jihad to achieve a caliphate. “This indicates that intolerant teachings have already entered top universities and high schools,” pollster Alvara, which carried out the survey, said in its report released Tuesday. “The government and moderate Islamic organizations must start taking tangible steps to anticipate this and be present in student circles with language that is easy for them to understand,” the report added. A presidential spokesman declined to comment on the findings. Hardline Islamic groups late last year led mass street rallies against Jakarta’s former governor, a Christian, whom they believed had insulted Islam. They eventually succeeded in derailing Basuki Tjahaja Purnama’s re-election bid in April this year, and he was subsequently jailed for blasphemy. The ruling was criticised globally as unjust. Groups like the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) call for sharia law to be imposed on the country and believe its leaders should only be Muslim.
The survey showed that the vast majority of students disagree with the establishment of an Islamic caliphate and violence. But authorities have repeatedly warned against the creeping influence of radical Islamic thought among student organisations and in campus activities. President Joko Widodo and his government are trying to contain the rising influence of hairline groups, especially in universities and Islamic boarding schools. A presidential decree banning any civil organisations deemed to go against the country’s secular state
ideology was approved by parliament last month. Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a largely peaceful organisation that calls for the establishment of a caliphate in Indonesia, was the first group to be disbanded under the decree. President Widodo has made several speeches at Islamic boarding schools around the country emphasizing Indonesia’s diversity and the importance of national unity. SOLO - President Joko Widodo has invited 4,000 supporters and volunteers to the wedding of his daughter, Kahiyang Ayu, which will take place on Nov 8, 2017. “The President in his special message has asked the volunteers to maintain order during the wedding procession,” Eko Sulistyo, coordinator of Jokowis volunteers and supporters, said here, on Saturday evening. The organizing committee has provided accommodation in the Solo Hajj dormitory, but half of them are likely to stay in their relatives homes or hotels at their own expenses, according to Sulistyo. Valverde stays grounded despite Barca’s flying start
MADRID - Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde says Spain’s Liga title race remains wide open despite his side’s imperious start to the season. HONG KONG - Luiz Felipe Scolari confirmed his departure from champions Guangzhou Evergrande but refused to rule out coaching in the Chinese Super League again after securing a third league title in a row. World Cup winner Scolari took over from Fabio Cannavaro in June, 2015 and led Guangzhou to three league crowns as well as the Asian Champions League and Chinese FA Cup. He originally signed an 18-month contract with the club before extending his deal for another year at the end of last season, but has decided to end his association with the seven-time CSL winners. “My story with Evergrande is finished,” the 68-year-old Brazilian said on Sunday. “But my story with China may continue. Massa won 11 races with Ferrari and finished runner-up to Lewis Hamilton, now a four-times world champion, by a single point in the 2008 season. His last victory was at the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix, where he won new fans for his dignified and sporting response when Hamilton seized the title by taking fifth place on the
last corner of the last lap. In 2009, he suffered a severe head injury and was in a coma for several days after being hit on the helmet in Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying by a spring shed from the Brawn of compatriot Rubens Barrichello. Trump lands in Japan, says U.S. and allies are prepared to defend freedom
KAWAGOE - U.S. President Donald Trump ramped up his tough rhetoric against North Korea when he arrived in Japan on Sunday, saying that the United States and its allies are prepared to defend freedom and that “no dictator” should underestimate U.S. resolve.
Trump kicked off a 12-day Asian trip and is looking to present a united front with Japan against North Korea through meetings with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe amid heightened tensions over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile tests. He told reporters on Air Force One en route to Asia that North Korea would figure prominently in discussions during the trip. He also singled out trade, which he said had been “badly handled” in the region for years. Trump has rattled some allies with his vow to “totally destroy” North Korea if it threatens the United States and his dismissal of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a “rocket man” on a suicide mission. A top aide said last week Trump intends to tell Asian leaders the world is “running out of time” in dealing with the nuclear crisis on the Korean peninsula. “No dictator, no regime, no nation should ever underestimate American resolve,” Trump told hundreds of cheering U.S. and Japanese troops in camouflage uniforms gathered at Yokota Air Base, just west of Tokyo, soon after he arrived. “Every once in a while, in the past, they underestimated us. It was not pleasant for them, was it?” said Trump, who wore a bomber jacket as he addressed the troops. Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed detained in corruption inquiry RIYADH - Saudi authorities detained a billionaire global investor and the head of the National Guard as part of an anticorruption purge that consolidates Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s hold on power. Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who owns investment firm Kingdom Holding, was among 11 princes, four ministers and tens of former ministers detained, two senior Saudi officials told Reuters on Sunday. A top security official, Prince Miteb bin Abdullah, was detained and replaced as minister of the powerful National Guard by Prince Khaled bin Ayyaf. This consolidates Prince Mohammed’s bin Salman’s control of security institutions which had previously been headed by separate branches of the ruling family. News of the purge came in the early hours of Sunday after King Salman decreed the creation of an anti-corruption committee chaired by his 32-year-old son Prince Mohammed, who has amassed power since rising from obscurity less than three years ago. The new body was given broad powers to investigate cases, issue arrest warrants and travel restrictions and freeze assets. “The homeland will not exist unless corruption is uprooted and the corrupt are held accountable,” the royal decree said. Analysts said the goal of the purge went beyond corruption and aimed to remove potential opposition to Prince Mohammed as he pushes an ambitious and controversial reform agenda. In September he announced that a ban on women driving would be lifted and he is trying to break decades of conservative tradition by promoting public entertainment and visits by foreign tourists. In economic policy, he has slashed state spending in some areas and plans a big sale of state assets. “The most recent crackdown breaks with the tradition of consensus within the ruling family whose secretive inner workings are equivalent to those of the Kremlin at the time of the Soviet Union,” wrote James Dorsey, a senior fellow at Singapore’s S. One in five Indonesian students support Islamic caliphate - survey
JAKARTA - Nearly 20 percent of high school and university students in Indonesia support the establishment of a caliphate in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country over the current secular government, a new survey showed this week. Indonesia has in recent years seen its long-standing reputation for religious tolerance come under scrutiny as hardline Islamic groups muscle their way into public and political life in the young democracy. The vast majority of Indonesians practice a moderate form of Islam and
the country has sizeable minorities of Hindus, Christians, and people who
adhere to traditional beliefs. Religious diversity is enshrined in its constitution. The survey by a Jakarta-based organization polled over 4,200 Muslim students, mostly in top schools and universities on Java island, home to over half the country’s population. Nearly one in four students said they were, to varying degrees, ready to wage jihad to achieve a caliphate. “This indicates that intolerant teachings have already entered top universities and high schools,” pollster Alvara, which carried out the survey, said in its report released Tuesday. “The government and moderate Islamic organizations must start taking tangible steps to anticipate this and be present in student circles with language that is easy for them to understand,” the report added. A presidential spokesman declined to comment on the findings. Hardline Islamic groups late last year led mass street rallies against Jakarta’s former governor, a Christian, whom they believed had insulted Islam. They eventually succeeded in derailing Basuki Tjahaja Purnama’s re-election bid in April this year, and he was subsequently jailed for blasphemy. The ruling was criticised globally as unjust. Groups like the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) call for sharia law to be imposed on the country and believe its leaders should only be Muslim.
The survey showed that the vast majority of students disagree with the establishment of an Islamic caliphate and violence. But authorities have repeatedly warned against the creeping influence of radical Islamic thought among student organisations and in campus activities. President Joko Widodo and his government are trying to contain the rising influence of hairline groups, especially in universities and Islamic boarding schools. A presidential decree banning any civil organisations deemed to go against the country’s secular state
ideology was approved by parliament last month. Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a largely peaceful organisation that calls for the establishment of a caliphate in Indonesia, was the first group to be disbanded under the decree. President Widodo has made several speeches at Islamic boarding schools around the country emphasizing Indonesia’s diversity and the importance of national unity. 4,000 supporters invited to wedding of President Jokowi`s daughter
SOLO - President Joko Widodo has invited 4,000 supporters and volunteers to the wedding of his daughter, Kahiyang Ayu, which will take place on Nov 8, 2017. “The President in his special message has asked the volunteers to maintain order during the wedding procession,” Eko Sulistyo, coordinator of Jokowis volunteers and supporters, said here, on Saturday evening. The organizing committee has provided accommodation in the Solo Hajj dormitory, but half of them are likely to stay in their relatives homes or hotels at their own expenses, according to Sulistyo. The volunteers and supporters, who had worked hard for the victory of Jokowi during the last presidential election campaign, are expected to
arrive in Solo beginning Monday (Nov 6). They decided to come early to pray for the success of the wedding ceremony, Eko Sulistyo, Deputy IV in charge of political communication and information dissemination of the Presidential Staff office, said. in June 2017. President Jokowi led the final meeting on the wedding preparations in Solo on Oct 29. Following the meeting, he confirmed that all preparations were completed. BUSINESS Central bankers on the move, but where’s the inflation?
LONDON - Now the Bank of England has raised interest rates for the first time in a decade, it is beyond doubt major central banks in industrialised economies are eager to shift away from ultra-easy policy. But the fact the decision was so contested both in and outside the BoE perhaps reveals more concern about the lack of inflation pressure than about Britain’s clear difficulty in trying to leave the European Union without a concrete plan. The majority of those who argued against higher rates in Britain started with the fact abovetarget inflation is a result of sharply higher import prices due to the tumble in the pound since the June 2016 vote to leave the EU. A lack of domestic inflation pressure from higher wage deals remains as plain as ever, as does the ongoing lack of inflationary drift from the global economy, where trade is down from boom years but cheap labour remains plentiful. Among those who carefully follow Britain’s peers in the Group of Seven industrialised economies, notably the United States and those in the euro zone, the lack of inflation is real and striking, corroborated by a recent Reuters poll of over 500 forecasters around the world. News that Jerome Powell will be taking over as Federal Reserve chair from Janet Yellen does nothing to change the fact core inflation on the central bank’s preferred measure has fallen back to 1.3 percent. That is where it was the month before the Fed started raising rates nearly two years ago. The Bank of Canada has delivered two interest rate hikes this year - the July one more of a surprise than the follow-up in September - but growth has since flatlined and there’s no sign of core inflation picking up there either. Led by President Mario Draghi, the European Central Bank has just skillfully engineered a broad ac-

The ECB even has a “core core” measure it looks at that strips out a litany of pesky components holding inflation down, and even that is not offering much encouragement. If Japan still hasn’t escaped from two lost decades of near-zero pricing power, even after the authorities have thrown the kitchen, bathroom and garage sinks at it, isn’t the logical conclusion that central banks aren’t in control of inflation? That is the challenge the BoE will have in coming months: persuading anyone who will listen that by raising rates a tiny amount from near-zero to just a little above zero it was instrumental in bringing UK inflation under control.

a grocery brand more associated with “posh” and “expensive”, should also be a reminder of where the path of least resistance lies. The other clear disinflationary risk, even if price pressure does pick up in the interim, is that on more than a few measures global asset prices look extremely stretched. “Equity investors are trying to have their cake and eat it,” economists at Fathom, an investment consultancy, say in a note. “They are betting, simultaneously, that real rates of interest will never rise materially above zero, while the major economies will continue to enjoy positive, if not stellar real rates of economic growth. MADRID - Registered unemployment rose sharply in Catalonia in October, data showed on Friday, with more people signing on as jobless in the region than anywhere else in Spain as companies fled in the midst of the country’s worst political crisis in decades. Almost 2,000 companies based in Catalonia moved their legal headquarters out of the region in October after an independence vote banned by Madrid that led to the central government sacking regional authorities and taking control. The number of people in Spain registering as jobless rose for the third straight month by 1.67 percent in October from a month earlier, or by 56,844 people, leaving 3.47 million
people out of work, data from the Labour Ministry showed. Of that, Catalonia saw unemployment rise by 3.67 percent, or 14,698 people, the largest loss of jobs amongst all the regions and compared to a just 0.08 percent rise in jobless in the region of Madrid. The Bank of Spain warned on Thursday that uncertainty due to the independence drive, if it persists, could lead to slower economic growth and lower job creation in the next few months. October often sees a continuation of rising unemployment after the summer tourist sector lays off temporary workers in hotels and restaurants. Registered jobless rose strongest in the service sector, with a 2.2 percent
monthly rise, or by 50,885 people, followed by agriculture, marking the end of summer harvests, up 5.83 percent, or 9,194 people. In Spain, the number of people paying in to the social security system as workers in Spain rose by 94,368 people, to 18.43 million people, the ministry said. In seasonally adjusted terms, Spain’s registered unemployed fell by 23,690 people in October from a month earlier. Spain’s unemployment rate, taken from a wide survey of the workforce a considered a more accurate representation of the country’s unemployed than the monthly figure, fell to its lowest since 2008 in the third quarter at 16.38 percent.(rtr)

Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon, A Unique Tradition to Invoke Fertility at Kapal Village
Bleganjur gamelan music was played. Hundreds of villagers then threw tipat (rice bag) bantal (pillow-like cake) each other. Although, they seemed to mutually reciprocate, between the two camps (people in the north and south) did not keep any revenge. Their throw was not focused on particular person, but to the air above the opposite camp. Although this looked like a war, they cheered each other due to excitement. It is the atmosphere of the Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon ritual or often known as the Siat Tipat Bantal at Kapal customary village, Mengwi, Badung district, Thursday (Oct. 5). Hundreds of Kapal customary villagers were involved in the Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon. In addition to the community, this unique tradition was also attended by the Regional Secretary of Badung district, Wayan Adi Arnawa. The ritual was followed by all Kapal customary villagers. All the villagers were then divided into two camps, namely the northern camp and southern camp. At first, the two camps held a ceremony in the temple and were then resumed with worship at the outermost courtyard of the Desa/Puseh temple of Kapal. Thousands of tipat and bantal were prepared by the temple apparatus. After dividing them, they were thrown each other like a war accompanied with bleganjur gamelan music. Chief of Kapal customary village, Ketut Sudarsana, said that Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon formerly known as perang tipat (tipat war) is an annual ritual having been carried out for generations at Kapal customary village. This tradition is then preserved, so that it is always carried out by the Kapal customary village. “This activity aims to invoke prosperity for all customary villagers of Kapal,” he said. Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon has the meaning of offerings or an expression of gratitude
before God in his manifestation as Lord Shiva. Aci means ‘offering,’ Tabuh means ‘echoing,’ Rah means ‘power’ and Pengangon is another name of Lord Shiva. “Mutual throw of tipat and bantal is aimed to bring together the symbol of pradhana (female) and purusha (male), resulting in fertility,” he explained. Ketut Sudarsana asserted that Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon is held by customary village because all the villages participated to enjoy the welfare. It is bringing together the tipat as symbol of ocean, pradhana (female) and bantal as symbol of mountain, purusha (male). Uniting the ocean and mountain is believed to be able to create life. “Two differ-
ent things will present a life that can produce a good life,” he said. Tipat and bantal thrown are not to target the opponent’s body but to make them both merge in the air and then fall to the ground. This symbolizes the rendezvous of purusha and pradhana which then produces a seed of life. Remnants of the scattered tipat and bantal are the collected again. Those remaining intact are distributed back to residents for consumption, while the infeasible ones are distributed to residents to be scattered in paddy fields and used as animal feed. It is meant to invoke a good life seed for residents, animals and plants. Sudarsana explained the tradition was
started to be implemented in 1339. It marked the arrival of prime minister of Singasari dynasty in Bali, namely Ki Kebo Waruya. He received a mandate from the Balinese King named Asta Sura Ratna Bumi Banten to renovate the Purusada Temple at Kapal village. When arriving at Kapal, his heart was touched when seeing the condition of local village experiencing famine season. Seeing such condition, he then invoked to deity abiding at Purusada Temple in order to bestow his graces. After applying for it, he was given instructions to perform the aci or ritual dedicated to Lord Shiva by means of tipat and bantal followed by all the Kapal customary villagers. (kmb)

An old gamelan instrument called Caruk made its first appearance at the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) this year. The Caruk gamelan
troupe from Pau Village, Banjarangkan performed music that is rarely heard, on the Amgsoka stage of the Denpsar Art Center.
“The caruk gamelan instrument is estimated to have originated in the fifteenth century and this is the fifth generation of this particular gamelan troupe” explained art coordinator of Pau customary village, Nengah Sukirta. Pau Village and Tangkas Village are the only places in Klungkung where caruk gamlean can be found, said Sukirta adding that they are only played for Deva Yajna and Pitri Yajna religious cermonies. “For Pitri Yajna rituals, caruk gamelan is played during the cremation ceremony during menek tumpang salu, menek bea and mapurwadaksina rites that culminate in the nyekah ritual. For Dewa Yajna rituals, caruk gamelan is played during the mamungkah rite. It is played at the peak of the ritual
when the deities circle the offerings clockwise –known as murwa daksina” he elaborated. Head of Pau customary village’s caruk gamelan troupe, I Wayan Suendra, said that this gamelan instrument is a rare and sacred instrument. Caruk gamelan consists of two small xylophones and one saron that are always played together. “We also have an extra player so for the BAF performance there were four musicians” he Suendra. Suendra added that nine different caruk gamelan compositions were handed down by the ancestors, however because the palm-leaf manuscripts on which they were written are hard to read, only five of the compositions are played. All five were performed at this year’s BAF: the Tabuh Ririgan,
Tabuh Rejang, Tabuh Ombak Segara, Tabuh Panji Marga and Tabuh Manu Kaba. “For a very long time only five of the compositions can be played because of the difficulty in reading the lontars, but we are determined to find a way to read the others so that we can perform them in next year’s BAF”, explained Suendra. Currently, there are only four people in Pau customary village who are actively involved playing gamelan so Suendra is eager to encourage younger people to learn to play. “The notation for caruk gamelan music is different than other gamelan so it is harder to learn. It takes many years to master. After the BAF we will start to teach young children, which may take even longer”, he said. (kmb)

They do this as wishing to realize their dream. Stepping on the sixth week, Karangasem residents living on the slopes of Mount Agung are still evacuating in Klungkung district. They are not only adults and the elderly, but also children of school age. Although far from their birthplace, they still have the lucky side when living in the location they had never dreamed of. It does not happen because they are given food for life, but they can still enjoy education and none drops out. More interestingly, during that period of time a number of children do not only attend class in one school, but should learn nomadically as experienced by Komang Darmawan, 15, a student of SMPN 2 Selat junior high school from Sebudi village. Having studied for three weeks at SMPN 2 Semara-
pura, this student evacuating in Swecapura Stadium moved back to SMPN 1 Sidemen, Karangasem. It takes about 25 minutes by motorcycle. “The moving is on the appeal of headmaster, so that we can meet together with my schoolmates again,” he said on Saturday (Nov. 4). Such reality does not make him frustrated. His passion for learning is still fervent. It is used as a provision to reach his ideal as a reliable mechanic in the future. “After graduating from junior high school, I want to continue to vocational school majoring in mechanical engineering. I want to be a mechanic,” he said. For school tuition, this ninth grade student relies on the government assistance through the family’s hope program amounting
to IDR 700,000 per month. This is greeted cheerfully and encourages his passion for school. “Hopefully, I can get another scholarship as well,” he added. Similar condition is also experienced by I Gede Agus Arsana Putra, 18. This twelfth grade student from Geriana Kangin hamlet, North Duda, had a temporary education at SMAN 1 Dawan high school. After three weeks, he moved back to SMAN 1 Sidemen. “Formerly, I attended school in SMAN 1 Selat,” he said when met at the evacuation post in Lebah hamlet, Semarapura Kangin. The missile was brought down near King Khaled Airport on the northern outskirts of the city and did not cause any casualties, said Saudi state-owned Al Ekhbariya TV. Rocket fragments fell near the airport grounds, but air traffic carried on normally, the Saudi civil aviation authority said on its official Twitter account. Saudi Arabia is part of a coalition carrying out bombings of the Iran-allied armed Houthi movement in Yemen which has taken over the capital Sanaa and other parts of the country during its civil war. Saudi Arabia, which supports the internationally-recognised Yemeni government based in Aden, has frequently intercepted missiles fired from its neighbour. Residents of northern Riyadh reported hearing a single deafening explosion that rattled windows around 20:20 local time, followed by rumbling and other sounds. “We heard an enormous loud boom and went outside, then heard a low rumbling noise like thunder and six to 12 smaller explosions,” one resident told Reuters. HUE - Floods inundated swathes of central and southern Vietnam on Sunday in the wake of a typhoon that left at least 27 dead just days before the region is due to host the APEC summit of Asia-Pacific leaders. Typhoon Damrey, the 12th major storm to hit Vietnam this year, made landfall on Saturday with winds of up to 90 km/h (56 mph) that damaged more than 40,000 homes, knocked down electricity poles and uprooted trees. The communist state’s Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention said 27 people were now counted dead and 22 were missing. It said 626 houses had collapsed entirely in a trail of destruction that has forced the evacuation of more than 30,000 people. Heavy rain and high winds lashed the coastal strip on Sunday. Some streets in the ancient capital of Hue were waist deep in water while in the old trading town of Hoi An, another popular tourist attraction, people boated in the streets. “This is the worst it has been for many years. Start on the right and make your way around counter-clockwise to get a feel for how the cultures changed over time, culminating in the Mexica (Aztec) exhibit, full of monumental stone
The museum is located on Avenida Paseo de la Reforma and Calzada Gandhi, in the Colonia Chapultepec Polanco. It is considered to be within Chapultepec Park’s Primera Seccion (First Section), though it is just outside the gates of the park (across the street). Getting there:
Take the metro to either Chapultepec or Auditorio station and follow the signs from there. The Turibus is also a good option for transportation. There is a stop just outside the museum.

Admission is 70 pesos, free for seniors over 60 holding an INAPAM card, students and teachers affiliated with a Mexican school, and children under 13. Admission is free on Sundays for Mexican citizens and residents (bring an ID to prove residency). Services at the Museum:

mepatung tradition begins to vanish
MANGUPURA — Balinese people have been quite familiar with mepatung or joint pig slaughter in the series of Galungan celebration from the past. However, in keeping with the development of technology and globalization era, this tradition has gradually disappeared. To that end, the mepatung tradition needs to be preserved. According to the Chief of LPD Kedonganan, Ketut Madra, who met amid his bustles to distribute pork to Kedonganan residents on Monday (Oct. 30), if the tradition disappears he is confident the community will run individually. In addition, they will also be easily influenced by capitalism that can cause the communal concept to disappear. “Mepatung is our form of building the LPD having the impact on the mebat (food preparation) tradition with the spirit of togetherness and shared ownership. These two concepts will certainly result in togetherness,” he said. Associated with the Penampahan Galungan day, mepatung tradition is admitted to realize the implementation of Panca Yadnya (five sacrifices). Every celebration of Galungan, the LPD Kedonganan usually implements mepatung for food preparation used to support the panca yadnya ritual. To Kedonganan community, the concept of mapatung can raise three spirits namely joining together, doing together and owning together. The basis of these three spirits is the same namely togetherness. It is the realization of prarem (addendum to customary bylaw) and management of financial institutions like
the LPD. “The advancement of LPD Kedonganan today is inseparable from the development effort carried out by the management and the employees only, but also the local community. Therefore, the synergy established by customary village, customary apparatus, supervisory board and the community must be well guarded,” he added. This time, the implementation of mepatung tradition, he said, simultaneously implements the prarem of Kedonganan customary village established by Kedonganan customary village in 2017. Vision of the prarem implementation is to make the LPD Kedonganan healthy, strong, tough and useful in realizing the panca kertha and supporting the implementation of Panca Yadnya. “In the context of implementing the panca kertha or five orders, there are five elements need to implemented, namely the Kertha Angga (employee order), Kertha Warga (community order), Kertha Desa (village order), Kertha Bhuwana (universal order) and Kertha Wisesa. One of the five orders we’ve done belong to the elements of kertha angga and kertha warga. Kerta warga is core member of Kedonganan customary village while kerta angga is the customary villagers getting involved in the LPD management,” he said. For this Galungan, the meat distributed amounts to 7,050 kg to a total of 2,350 people where each resident gets a share of 3 kg of pork and cash worth IDR 50,000 to purchase spices. (kmb23)
TABANAN — The decline in the alert level of Mt. Agung from warning to watch seems not very influential on independent refugees in the Tabanan district. The data in a number of subdistricts in Tabanan such as Baturiti, Pupuan and Tabanan, have showed the decline in the number of refugees since a month ago. For example, subdistrict head of Baturiti, I Ketut Ridia, said the data of refugee have been decreasing since last month, from 1,477 people to only 1,261 people. “Possibly, there are refugees returning home on the religious holiday for prayers in their respective village,” he said on the sidelines of attending the plenary session on Monday. However, Ridia affirmed that refugees are always asked to make a report to the evacuation post when they are going out or entering the refugee camp. “Although you are staying in the house of relatives, please keep reporting when wishing to go back to Karangasem,” he said. The decrease in the number of refugees also occurred in Pupuan and Tabanan subdistrict. Subdistrict head of Pupuan, Hendra Manik, said that since the last two weeks the number of refugees has decreased. “One hundred refugees have returned home. According to the last data, in Pupuan there are only 425 refugees staying with their relatives,” he said. In the meantime, in Tabanan subdistrict, there are a total of 21 families accommodated in Tabanan refugee camp, in Wantilan of Tabanan customary village, but now they have entirely returned home. “From five families reduced to four. Now, they have entirely returned home. This has lasted since ten days ahead of Galungan,” explained subdistrict head of Tabanan, I Putu Arya Suta. Related to possibility of the surging refugees to return home to Karangasem after the decreased alert level of Mount Agung, the Head of Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Tabanan, I Gusti
Ngurah Made Sucita, said that his agency has prepared three units of BPBD vehicle to facilitate the homecoming of refugees if needed. “Until now, no one asks to return home and most of them have gone home with their own vehicles,” he said. Total number of refugees in Tabanan district based on the latest data of BPBD reached 4,072 people spreading across 10 subdistricts. Currently, continued Sucita, the BPBD staff also continues to check in order to get valid data on the number of refugees remaining to exist in Tabanan. In the meantime, two days ahead of Galungan, a number of refugees in Marga region could still feel the atmosphere of Galungan holiday. At Kukuh village, Marga, for instance, the refugees were given a pig weighing 116 kilograms to be slaughtered and divided. The pig for the friends from Karangasem was donated by one of the Tabanan residents. Representative of the refugees, Ketut Purna, thanked for the pig donation delivered by headman of Kukuh Marga, I Made Sugianto. According to residents from Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem, during their temporary stay at Kukuh village, they have received much attention from local residents, volunteers and village officials. In addition to basic food aid, school uniforms, as well as regular examination and treatment from Marga II Public Health Center, they were also given the assistance by the Kukuh village apparatus when two refugees were hospitalized and had outpatient treatment in the Tabanan Hospital. Headman of Kukuh, I Made Sugianto, explained that the number of Karangasem residents temporarily staying at Kukuh due to warning alert level of Mount Agung reached 113 people. They live independently and in relative’s home at six locations namely the hamlet of Lodalang, Tengah, Munggal, Tegal, Denuman and Tatag. Then, on Penyajaan Galungan, Monday (Oct. 30) some have returned home to celebrate Galungan. “Today there are 17 families remaining to stay at Kukuh village. After Galungan, 129,000 Mount Agung evacuees remain
AMLAPURA - The number of people who were evacuated from villages near Mount Agung to evacuation posts continues to decline. After Galungan, tens of thousands of evacuees returned home. According to the latest data on evacuees from Emergency Response Taskforce, as of Friday (Nov. 3) at 18:00, there were 129,109 people in 380 evacuation posts across Bali. Before Galungan, there were 139,995 people living in evacuation posts, then the number dropped slightly to 134,310 and continued to decline as Galungan approached. Following the decline in the alert level of Mount Agung to watch, residents of disaster-prone area (KRB) II and I were granted permission to return home. The Mount Agung Eruption Taskforce estimates that the number of refugees will continue to decrease because the number of residents of KBR III areas only amounts to some 50,000 people, while everyone else can go home. Referring to the recent data, The number of villages in the watch zone finally increased to 15 villages, while the number of refugees in this zone is estimated to be no more than 60,000 people. Data are being updated for every village in the watch zone in order to get detailed territorial data for every administrative hamlet. It will
therefore become clearer who remains in evacuation and how has hone home. There seems to still be quite a lot of people who are still living in evacuation posts. Regent of Karangasem, I Gusti Ayu Mas Sumatri, recently said that this is likely due to several factors including the fact that Mount Agung’s volcanic activity is fluctuating so residents from KBR II and II areas remain in doubt about the safety of going home even thought eh alert level has decreased to ‘watch’. There is also the matter of having children moving back and forth, Many children have already adapted to their new schools, so parents are reluctant to disrupt this process to home when they fear that they may have to evacuate again. “ Most evacuees that I have met with want to be sure that Mount Agung is back to normal and that it is really safe to go home”, said Sumatri. The regent admitted that one of the challenges is convincing residents of (disaster-prone) KBR I and KBR II areas to go home. Residents of KBR III areas are much more willing to go home, she said. “Some residents even cried and told me that they would prefer dying at home than living with uncertainty at the evacuation posts. Such attitudes are mostly expressed by the elderly, she said. Some who were forced to evacuate, did not want to eat at the evacuation posts, go sick and died. I heard this from people while doing site inspections”” said Regent Mas Sumatri. (kmb31)

BPBD Bali dismantles evacuation tents at Les village
SINGARAJA - The tents that were previously occupied by thousands of refugees at Les village, in the sub-district of Tejakula, were dismantled on Friday (Nov. 3), following the decrease of the alert level for Mount Agung from ‘warning’ to ‘watch’. The tents belinging to the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Gianyar, Karangasem, Tabanan and Bali’s provincial government were all taken down, while those belonging to the BPBD Bulelelng and the Social Agency and Health Agency, will be taken down soon. Chief Executive of BPBD Buleleng, Made Subur, explained that the tents will remain on site at Les Village in case the alert level is raised again or if there is an eruption. A surveillance tent is also being set up so that officers can guard the evacuation post. The government of Karangasem will also be informed that the site is ready to accommodate evacuees
at any time. “Although the tents are being taken down, we will remain on alert until the condition of Mount Agung is declared normal again. We cannot be sure that the alert level will not be raised again as nature is unpredictable. Once conditions are back to normal then we can celar all the tents form the evacuation post” he said. As reported previously, Les village can had been accommodating some 1,765 evacuees from Ban, Sukadana, Baturinggit and other villages in Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem who were then transferred to more appropriate shelters. The government is now considering Les village as an emergency evacuation post in the case of an eruption. The evacuees who had been staying at the Les Village post are now dispersed in several villages in the subdistrict of Tejakula: Sambirenteng, Bondalem, Tejakula, Julah and Pacung village. (kmb)

The GALUNGAN holiday was enjoyed by school children joyfully. Those who are still living in evacuation posts had little or nothing to do and over the school break, they just sat around with their parents, occasionally playing with the other children. Evacuation post coordinator at the Agriculture Office for Rendang village, Karangasem, I Nengah Sama, said on Saturday (Nov. 4) that the children who are still living in the evacuation posts had nothing to do. Previously, volunteers had been providing entertainment and games but over the Galungan holiday there were not special activities. “Before Galungan the children would attend school or at least play with the other children, but because of the school break, they had nothing to do but sit around with their parents”, said Sama One young student evacuee named, Ni Putu Rika Pandayani, said that during the Galungan holiday she had nothing to do so she just stayed in the evacuation camp. Before Galungan she had nothing to do in the morning but was attending school in the
afternoon. “Before I was going to school everyday, but now that we are on holiday I don’t have any activities. Sometimes I will read a book and then take a read. After Galungan we can get back to our regular activity – I mean go back to school” said this ninth grade student from the SMPN 2 Rendang junior high school. Another evacuee named I Putu Dede Hendrawan also said that there were no special activities during Galungan. “ Since the Galungan holidays, we have nothing to do , so we just go to the river to get water to wash and cook” said Dede. Subdistrict head of Rendang, I Wayan Mastra, said that he has yet to receive the latest data on the number of people living in evacuation posts in the sub-district of Rendang since the alert level for Mount Agung was decreased from ‘warning’ to ‘watch’. “We do not know for sure how m any people are still in evacuation posts and how many have returned home as we are still collecting data” said Mastra. Despite a rich pedigree in print, film and television, Brannagh’s film represents something of a cinematic resurrection for Christie’s work, with the most recent previous cinematic adaptation being 1985’s “Ordeal by Innocence.” “It’s been 30 years, I guess, since we’ve had a proper cinema film,” said James Prichard, Christie’s great grandson and CEO of Agatha Christie Ltd., the company which manages the rights to her works. ‘Walking Dead’ zombie game seeks Pokemon-style success
HELSINKI - Finnish game studio Next Games said on Friday it will launch a new augmented reality smartphone game in the coming months based on AMC Networks’ hit TV show “Walking Dead”.

The game, in which players fight zombies that are superimposed onto the real world on smartphone screens, is tapping into the trend of augmented reality (AR) which gained mass adoption last year with the release of Niantic Inc’s Pokemon Go. Next Games said the “Walking Dead: Our World” game, which it hopes will mirror Pokemon Go’s success, will be available for test users on Apple’s App Store and
Google Play in selected regions by January before a wider release later next year. The TV show tells the story of a world overrun by zombies, and the new game will use AR technology to let players battle the zombie characters in real world environments. Based on the same show, Next Games has previously developed a mobile strategy game which has been downloaded by more than 16
million users. “I have an optimistic view on (the new game‘s) potential. I expect this game to reach similar levels of revenue to their previous game,” said analyst Jerker Salokivi at Evli brokerage, with a “hold” rating on the stock. Shares in the company, which was listed in March, jumped more than 100 percent in August after the company released its first video trailer of the upcoming game. The stock fell more than 7 percent on Friday as the company reported a loss from the first nine months of the year due to investments in game development. (rtr)

Lebanon PM Hariri resigns, assails Iran and Hezbollah
BEIRUT - Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri resigned on Saturday, saying he believed there was an assassination plot against him and accusing Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah of sowing strife in the Arab world. His resignation, a big surprise to Beirut’s political establishment, brought down the coalition government and plunged Lebanon into a new political crisis. It thrust Lebanon into the front line of a regional competition between Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shi’ite Iran that has also buffeted Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Bahrain. A Saudi government minister said Hariri was in Riyadh to ensure his safety. Hariri, who is closely allied with Saudi Arabia, alleged in a broadcast from an undisclosed location that Hezbollah was “directing weapons” at Yemenis, Syrians and Lebanese. In comments directed at Iran, he said the Arab world would “cut off the hands that wickedly extend to it”. Hariri’s coalition, which took office last year, grouped nearly all of Lebanon’s main parties, including Hezbollah. It took office in a political deal that made Michel Aoun, a Hezbollah ally, president, and was seen as a victory for Iran.
The resignation risks exacerbating sectarian tensions between Sunni and Shi’ite Muslims and returning Lebanon to paralysis in government. An official at the U.S. State Department said it was following the situation closely and noted that Hariri had been a “strong partner in building strong national state institutions and in the war on terror”. The official added “the United States expects an orderly political process in Lebanon and will remain supportive of the legitimate institutions of
the Lebanese state”. It was not immediately clear who might succeed Hariri, Lebanon’s most influential Sunni politician. The prime minister must be a Sunni in Lebanon’s sectarian system. Aoun must appoint the candidate with most support among MPs, who he is expected to consult in the coming days. “We are living in a climate similar to the atmosphere that prevailed before the assassination of martyr Rafik al-Hariri. I have sensed what is being plotted covertly to target
my life,” Hariri said. Rafik al-Hariri was killed in a 2005 Beirut bomb attack that pushed his son Saad into politics and set off years of turmoil. A U.N.-backed tribunal has charged five Hezbollah members over the killing. Hezbollah denies involvement. The Saudi-owned pan-Arab television channel al-Arabiya alHadath reported that an assassination plot against Hariri was foiled in Beirut days ago, citing an unnamed source. Saudi Arabia’s Gulf Affairs Minister Thamer al-Sabhan said in a television interview that Hariri’s personal security detail had “confirmed information” of a plot to kill him. Lebanon’s internal security force said in a statement on the reports that it had no information about the matter. Hariri said Hezbollah and Iran
had brought Lebanon into the “eye of a storm” of international sanctions. Iran was sowing strife, destruction and ruin wherever it went and he accused it of a “deep hatred for the Arab nation”. Aoun’s office said Hariri had called him from “outside Lebanon” to inform him of his resignation. He has postponed a visit to Kuwait and directed military and security agencies “to maintain stability”, it said. Continued to page 6
