Police were out in force to prevent any large-scale unrest during the day-long strike called by the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and leftist parties in a show of strength against the Congress-led government’s reform programme. The response was mixed, with the greatest impact felt in states with non-Congress administrations, like West Bengal, Karnataka and Bihar. The day of action virtually shut down the software sector in India’s IT showcase city Bangalore — the capital of BJP-ruled Karnataka — where hundreds of software firms, including giants like Infosys and Wipro, told employees to stay at home.
In New Delhi, the government said it would not be bullied into reneging on reform promises, and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee insisted there was “no question” of rolling back on the fuel price hikes. The government scrapped petrol subsidies last month and announced an across-the-board rise in the price of other fuels as a key part of its strategy to rein in a yawning fiscal deficit. The inflationary knock-on effect of the increases is an issue that India’s fractured opposition can unite over, given popular anger over steep rises in the cost of living. Continued on page 6

Legong Creation “Karna Gugur”, The Two Knight Brothers Great War Presented by the GEOKS – Singapadu, Gianyar at Ksirarnawa Open Theatre on Saturday (3/7) night, the ‘Karna Gugur’ legong (heavenly dance of divine nymphs) dance was not only enjoyed by Balinese but also by the foreign tourists completed with their digital cameras, gazed at the mass legong dance by Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar’s Great Teacher, Prof Dr. I Wayan Dibia. Even its ‘labeled’ new creation, ‘Karna Gugur’ legong is faithful keeping the esthetic rules and the principals of a legong dance. The great choreographer’s art piece seems magnificent and strongly characterized as it succeeded in combining abstract expressive movements with the narrative and dramatic ones harmonically. The story taken from Bharata Yudha, a popular story for the art goers of Bali, was made easily understood through this dance. Sadly the seriousness of the audience appreciating the Semar Pegulingan saih pitu (seven harmony) accompanied art piece was a bit disturbed by audiences getting to be in the front. Well the open theatre couldn’t accommo-
date the overloaded audience. Even though stuck in a very humid atmosphere, the audience still able to enjoy the 19 female dancers’ performance and gamelan players from Sanggar Pulo Candani Wiswakarma, Batubulan, Gianyar until the end. Summarily, this legong creation is divided to four acts telling the death of Korawa’s commander-inchief, Adhipati Karna, who is very brave but has an unstable inner conscience. As the generation of Pandawa, Karna’s inner is always depressed. Even he was born from Korawa’s side he has sworn his life to defend Duryadana who has given him throne and treasures and yet inside his heart he will never forget that he’s Dewi Kunti’s son
who is also Arjuna’s mother. During the Bharata Yudha war where he has to face Arjuna, his burning sense of revenge is not able to burn his spirit of war. Curse by curse got him and when his horse cart got into the mud, Sri Kresna commanded Arjuna to immediately release his arrow towards Karna. In the end, the great war of the two knight brothers ended on Sang Adhipati Karna’s death. Before the main event, the gamelan players from the Sanggar Pulo Cendana Wiswakarma presented an instrumental legong based Liyar Samas by I Ketut Lotring. The music was inspired from Kuta beach’s life which is decorated with fisherman boats used to catch fishes. (ian)
Mamungkah ritual at Pura Puseh temple of Belega Gianyar (Bali Post)—
Belega Village, Blahbatuh subdistrict, Gianyar, better known as the village of bamboo art craft, last Saturday (Jul 3), held a ritual of Mamungkah Mupuk Pedagingan and Padudusan Agung at the Pura Puseh temple of Belega customary village. It was the first ritual held within the past 52 years ago representing a form of sradha bhakti or faith and devotion as well as gratitude to God on the completion of shrine and other building constructions at the local temple. Head of Belega customary village, I Wayan Rata in the midst of the official visit of Gianyar Regent said the development undertaken in the village of Pura Puseh temple of Belega had been committed gradually since 1998 through decision of customary village assembly of Belega. The Pura Puseh was supported by 539 families divided into four hamlets had been able to finish the building complex, namely all shrine
buildings located at Utama Mandala (innermost courtyard), split gates situated at Madya Mandala (middle courtyard), and Bale Paebatan at Nista Mandala (outermost courtyard), explained Rata. The entire ritual procession utilizing two buffaloes were conducted at Madya Mandala and Utamaning Mandala. Mamungkah Mupuk Pedagingan and Pedudusan Agung ritual were implemented starting from Saturday (Jul 3) with Tawur Agung and then continued with Mapepade ritual, Wali/ Ngenteg, and would be concluded with Meajar-ajar on the upcoming 19 July. “The whole series of ceremonial activities is estimated to spend a cost at IDR 1 billion more obtained from mandatory payment from each villager, government assistance and volunteer donation from local villagers,” he said. Such grandiose ritual was carried out by applying the Tri Hita Karana concept. Parhyangan (spiritual) aspect was implemented through spiritual development of commu-
nity by prayers, Pawongan (social) aspect through a sense of mutual cooperation in implementing the yajña or sacrifice, as well as Palemahan (environmental) aspect through the preservation of wildlife by the release of fish seedlings, birds and planting 500 ritual trees. On that account, it was expected to engender a balance of development inside and neighborhood of the temple. Meanwhile, interaction of Tri Hita Karana concept was also seen from the atmosphere on entering into the territory of Belega Village on welcoming the grandiose ritual. At the moment of entering the village area of Belega, harmoniously chic atmosphere with penjor decoration in yellow-and-white emanated an atmosphere of high ritual. One of those from outside Bali was from National House of Cultures (Rumah Budaya Nasional – RBN) “Puspo Budoyo” Ciputat, Tangerang who performed amazingly at Ksirarnawa building last Saturday (3/7) evening. With full confidence, the art community actualized the spirit of uniting the Indonesian Republic (NKRI) through the art creativity media by introducing various Indonesian traditional arts (especially traditional arts from coastal archipelago) to the Balinese. Dances, music and songs were all captured in a medley. That evening, the art goers were made to realize how amazing and colorful it can be if all those cultures components became one. Through the arts, uniting spirit stated in the saying Bhinneka Tunggal Ika successfully actualized in a real action and not only something to watch. Puspo Budoyo art community which’s supported by 17 dancers
and 7 musicians opened their presentation through Lenggang Nyai dance, new from Jakarta. It tells about the busy beautiful girls who are getting ready to welcome great guests. The attractive ‘welcome’ dance then continued with Gelipang dance which gave a strong heroism and patriotism message to the audience. This East Javanese dance shows the patriotism spirit of the sugar farmers to defend it from being taken by the Dutch companies. And then they continue the dances with Zapin dance from Riau, Jejer Gandrung dance from Banyuwangi, East Java and ended with Saman dance from Aceh Nangroe Darussalam which is known to the world. Besides presenting the richness of the nation’s traditional dances, Puspo Budoyo also performed Rampak Gendang music and regions songs in medley. This regions songs has fast rhythm and dynamic such as Hujan Gerimis, Kicir-kicir, Jali-jalu and Ondelondel Lenggang. Bali News Ngurek attractions jazz up Ngelawang parades NGELAWANG parade in the arena of 32nd Bali Arts Festival (BAF), last Sunday (Jul 4), was closed by attractive appearances presented by envoys from Jembrana, Denpasar, Badung and Karangasem Regency. Art presentation of which most supporters seemed to remain very young was looked forward by visitors of BAF. Despite the heavy rains had flushed the area making the implementation of Ngelawang Parade delayed, the audiences were loyally waiting for the rain to stop so they could see the art performance until the end. Apparently, the waiting of audience was not in vain. Each art envoy from four regencies successfully presented a very intriguing art attraction. Ngelawang Parade belonging to the last round was also very thrilling and suspenseful all at once and raised religious-magical nuances of a very strong attraction because the even was also graced by ngurek (stabbing kris dagger into the chest) and trance. On that occasion, they also carried sacred effigies either in the form of sanctified barong or rangda at the arena of BAF. Splendor of Ngelawang Parade last Sunday was opened by an attractive show by Astha Gina Art Studio entrusted to become the envoy of Jembrana. Community of artists from the western end of Bali performed a composition of barong ket in the story entitled Drati Krama. It revealed the story of I Wayan Buyar taking a variety of ways to realize his malicious intent to win the love of Ni Kusuma Sari, the daughter of Ki Dukuh Siladri. At the end of performance, the art envoy of Jembrana featured ngurek attraction along with trance. After that, it was the time for the art envoy of Denpasar City, featuring the show of barong landung (couple of barong in tall human figure) entitled Dalem Balingkang. The simple and brief ngelawang art composition aimed at creating awareness of Bali residents to avoid love affairs because it could trigger disastrous and long-sufferings in the household life. Coolness scattered by the envoys of Denpasar City was suddenly turning hotter as soon as the cultural envoy of Badung Regency showed off the barong ket and white –and-red patterned barong landung. They played the story entitled Pastu Dalem Nusa (A Curse of Dalem Nusa) telling the story on the death of Gusti Jelantik Bogol by Ki Pencok Saang weapon. This story aimed at creating awareness of mankind that there was more enduring power in the world than the power of God Almighty. Similar to the appearance of the Jembrana envoy, the Badung artist community also showed off a very tense ngurek attraction. In the final session, the art envoys from Karangasem Regency presented ngelawang attractions by presenting barong Nongkling (barong of human puppet). They carried the play entitled Yadnya Meupa Ayu Bumi aiming for neutralizing the Bhuta Dungulan and keeping the human beings away from the influence of evil spirits that can harm human life. Observers of Ngelawang Parade, Sang Ketut Sandhiyasa and Gede Oka Surya Negara admitted to be amazed when witnessing the enthusiasm of BAF visitors to watch the Ngelawang Parade. The area around Denpasar Art Center used as the venue of Ngelawang Parade was always crowded. Meanwhile, in the upcoming BAF, both observers expected the BAF committee could provide a better and representative space of the appreciation for the event of Ngelawang Parade. By doing so, the artists were able to show off their art performance perfectly without being squeezed by the audience. “In addition, the committee also needs to create a barrier for the audience so that they can not push into the arena of performance. With this barrier, artists can perform optimally, while viewers can also appreciate the art performance better,” suggested Sang Ketut Sandhiyasa who among the connoisseurs of arts in Bali is better known as Gede Tomat. Melia Bali carry out social activities Melia Bali once again assisted the government in decreasing the number of poverty in Bali. Melia Bali had arranged the program gradually for the poor people and foundations and also involves its repeater guests. The involvement of the guests is the effort from Melia Bali to inform its activities to everyone including the guests. Landslide, Caused House Damaged Tabanan (Bali Post) – Rain has caused the cliff in Penebel village collapsed. A house owned by Ketut Suma, Banjar Ubung, Penebel Village, damaged by the landslide as high as seven meters of soil struck down last Saturday (3/7) night. The collapse happened around 7.30 pm when a shocking thundering
sound made residents to get out. The no trees cliff which became paddy fields areal on the west side of the house fractured and collapsed to the east where the house is. Local residents then explained the rain and the rushing water flows on the paddy fields above the cliff caused the landslide. The Bali house
sized 8 x 12 meters was severely damaged with its roofs shattered and walls collapsed also fractured. LONDON – The royal family cost Britain’s taxpayers £38.2 million in the last financial year, according to accounts released by Buckingham Palace Monday. The figure, which represents 62 pence per person, was released with Britain facing deep public spending cuts as the coalition government bids to cut the country’s record budget deficit. Officials insisted that the royal household was “acutely aware of the difficult economic climate” and had taken action including freezing the number of employees. The figure for 2009-10 represents a 7.9 percent drop on the previous year, a fall attributed in part to royals taking fewer commercial charter flights. But opponents of the mon-
archy are demonstrating outside the palace Monday to demand more clarity on how the royals spend public money. “We’ll be demanding real transparency and accountability from the palace, so we can really see how much public money they are wasting at a time when government spending is under the pressure of huge cuts,” Graham Smith of campaign group Republic said. “Royal finance reforms promised by the government are a start, but they don’t go far enough or quick enough.” Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne announced in last month’s budget that the royal household would face a funding shake-up and in future undergo the same audit scrutiny as other areas of government expenditure.

JERUSALEM – Israel is releasing a list of goods it will continue to ban from the Gaza Strip after easing its land blockade of the territory. The decision comes on the eve of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s White House. Officials say Israel will still largely restrict desperately needed construction materials and other items that could have military uses. However, they say Israel will authorize these items for use in international projects. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the list is not to be released until later Monday. Israel has been under intense international pressure to loosen its three-year embargo on Gaza since Israeli commandos killed nine activists in a May 31 raid on a blockade-busting flotilla. Suicide car bomber kills soldier in NW Pakistan Associated Press Writer
MINGORA, Pakistan – A suicide car bomber shot at guards and detonated his explosives at the gate of a paramilitary base in northwestern Pakistan before dawn Monday, killing one soldier and wounding at least seven other people, said security officials. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call to The Associated Press. Hafeez Ullah, who identified himself as a local Taliban commander, said the goal was to free Taliban militants imprisoned at the base. The bomber first tried to force his way onto the base in Lower Dir district by shooting at troops and policemen guarding the gate, said Maj. Suleman Khan, a spokesman for the paramilitary Frontier Corps. He blew himself up after realizing he couldn’t penetrate the base, said Khan. The guards killed a second suicide car bomber, preventing him from detonating his explosives, and also killed two suicide bombers who were on foot, said Khan. The blast from the first bomber killed one soldier, said the army in a statement. There were conflicting reports about how many people were
wounded in the attack. The army said seven soldiers were wounded. But a local police officer, Raffat Ali, said 12 were wounded, including 10 troops and two policemen. Two civilians also were wounded by retaliatory fire from guards trying to repel the bombers, said Ali. The Pakistani Taliban has declared war on the government because the group deems it unIslamic
and is upset at its alliance with the United States. The military has responded by launching a series of offensives against the Taliban in the northwest, including one in Lower Dir and neighboring Swat in 2009. The army declared victory in reclaiming the areas from insurgents, but sporadic violence still occurs.

Australian to be tried over 10 deaths in wildfire MELBOURNE, Australia – A man pleaded not guilty Monday to charges that he deliberately started one of the deadly wildfires that swept through southern Australia last year. The fires in Victoria state in February 2009 were Australia’s deadliest, killing 173 people and destroying more than 2,000 homes. Brendan Sokaluk is accused of starting one blaze that investigators say killed 10 people. Sokaluk, 41, pleaded not guilty in Melbourne Magistrates Court to
190 charges, which include 10 counts of arson causing death. The other counts cover serious injuries suffered by 21 people as well as property damage from the fire. He faces life in prison if convicted of all charges. Magistrate Simon Garnett said evidence suggested the fire had
been deliberately lit. “The charges you are facing are of the most serious kind,” Garnett told Sokaluk in court. Sokaluk did not apply for bail. He has not made any statements about the charges against him. The next court hearing was scheduled for July 19.
US resumes oil skimming after Hurricane Alex NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AFP) – Efforts to clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill gathered steam Monday after Hurricane Alex prompted a five-day shutdown, amid new questions over how BP would pay for the mounting costs. Cleanup workers arrived back on Grand Isle, Louisiana by the hundreds, spilling off school buses that shuttled them in from around the state. In the wake of Hurricane Alex, beaches, shorelines and marshes lay smeared with thick patches of oil and the sky was still filled with ominous, gray clouds. “This is definitely the most oil I’ve seen. So far,” said one worker who declined to give his name. Skimming operations resumed in Louisiana but high seas kept vessels tied up in harbor in three other southeastern US states and no controlled burns were being carried out. But officials said other operations to fend off the spill, including laying protective boom, were back on track. Skimming was suspended last week as Tropical Storm Alex, which later became the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2010 season, entered the Gulf. As it faces a massive bill for its efforts to clean up the oily mess — up to 60 billion dollars by some estimates — BP is turning to rival oil groups and sovereign wealth funds to fend off a possible hostile takeover bid, reports said. The National, an Emirati newspaper based in Abu Dhabi, reported that sovereign wealth funds in the oilrich Middle East have proposed making a strategic investment in BP, which has pledged to place 20 billion dollars in an escrow account to pay for the cleanup in the Gulf.

LONDON (AFP) – Police were Monday hunting a man suspected of shooting his ex-girlfriend, killing her new partner and then gunning down a police officer. Raoul Thomas Moat, 37, allegedly shot his former partner and her new boyfriend early Saturday in Birtley, Northumbria police said. The boyfriend died and the ex-girlfriend is in a critical condition in hospital. Less than 24 hours later, detectives believe he shot and critically injured a police officer in the nearby city of Newcastle. The suspected gunman got out of prison Thursday after serving a short sentence for assault, and police said he believed his ex-girlfriend had been having an affair with a police officer. But they said her new boyfriend had no links to the local police force.
Police have launched a huge manhunt to track down Moat, who was still at large two days after the first shootings. Moat had contacted police around the time of the third shooting to complain he was not being taken seriously. Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Adamson urged Moat: “This must stop now.” “You have told us that the police are not taking you seriously. We are,” he said. “I want you to know that you have our full attention, innocent people have been hurt.” The shootings came about a month after a taxi driver went on a killing spree through villages in northwest England, shooting dead 12 people.

JAKARTA - ASEAN member countries agreed to uniform the ASEAN Common Competency Standard for Tourism Professionals (ACCSTP). “The ACCSTP itself is actually an Indonesian National Working Competence Standard (SKKNI) in the sector of tourist travel, hotels, and restaurants, making Indonesia to already has an ASEAN Competence Standard,” Head of the Cultural and Tourism Natural Resources Development Agency I Gusti Putu Laksaguna said in Jakarta Sunday. The agreement was the result of the
32nd ASEAN tourist meeting held in the Senggigi tourist resort in West Lombok from June 29 to July 3, 2010. The meeting was attended by representatives from Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam, in addition to Japan, China and South Korea, and the UNEP as support participants. was a wish to improve the quality and personnel of tourism circles in ASEAN, for which a competence qualification is a requirement. The discussion of the competence certification of ASEAN tourism personnel, known as ASEAN Tourism Professional Monitoring Committee (ATPMC), is a follow up of the Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) of tourism of ASEAN level. MRA was singed by the ASEAN tourism ministers on January 29, 2010, and the signing of the MRA agreement marked a step forward of the ASEAN member countries in liberization of ASEAN tourism in 2010.
Trike aircraft crashes in W Java Antara
BANDUNG - A trike aircraft piloted by Noto and Panji crashed and went missing around Wayang Mountain in Bandung district, West Java Province, on Sunday. The accident occurred on the illfated aircraft‘s flight from Nusawiru, Pangandaran, to Sulaiman air in Bandung district. The crash was known after ground people lost contact with those on board. that a group of the army and air force rescue workers had been deployed to the likely crash site. Pangalengan police chief Adjunct Commissioner Dadang said he had received reports of this crash from his men and some people who witnessed the trike shortly before crashing to the ground. The trike aircraft might have crashed at about 02.00 pm local around the Wayang or Swantosa mountainous areas. “Some local residents heard the
sounds of this trike around the mountainous areas before crashing to the ground,” he said. However, as of early Monday, the rescue efforts remained unsuccessful in finding the exact crash site and those on board. Another trike aircraft with two people on board had safely landed on the Sulaiman airstrip, he said. “We are continuing the rescue and search efforts today,” he said. In Indonesia, the trikes are usually used by the aerosport modeling and design enthusiasts.
PONTIANAK - The capacity of West Kalimantan‘s state power company PT PLN to supply electricity has much improved following the operation of a 30 megawatt (MW) power plant to the equatorial system serving Pontianak, Mempawah and Singkawang Friday afternoon. “The total capacity of the equatorial system increased from 175 MW to 205 MW, and the system`s peak load reached 173 MW,” Director West Indonesia operations director of PT PLN Harry Jaya Pahlawan said on the sidelines of an inauguration of the oil power plant. The West Kalimantan PLN planned to rent a 50 MW power plant to bolster the equatorial system services. In the first stage, a 30 MW power plant had been built. “Later, 20 MW is still being worked out and planned to enter the equatorial system in August or September this year,” he said. Harry Jaya Pahlawan said with the increased capacity, the N-1 criterion of power generation could be met, which means that there will be a big reserve of a power plant at each of the systems,” he said. Right now the biggest power plant in the equatorial system is the gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) with a capacity of 30 MW. West Kalimantan Governor Cornelis said the economic growth
in West Kalimantan cannot be offset by merely providing power generation. He then offered PLN to optimize coal potentials in West Kalimantan‘s uper reaches to serve remote places far from the provincial capital of Pontianak. “Such as by building PLTU at the mouth of mines in Melawi regency or Kapuas Hulu to serve the people in the upper reaches,” Cornelis said. West Kalimantan also has a potential of other sources of power energy like water, wind, and the sun, which had yet to be used optimally. General Manager of W Kalimantan‘s PLN Widodo Budi Nugroho said in the past the power system in Pontianak was in a status of alert. PLN of West Kalmantan will increase the capacity of its power plants in the Kerapang system by renting three MW power plant, two MW in Sanggau, three MW in Sekadau, two MW in Sambas, three MW in Sintang, one MW in Putussibau and one MW in Nanga Pinoh (Melawi). While capacity has increased, PLN did not promise that blackouts would be stopped. “Some of the blackouts are planned, while others are not. PLN has stopped its planned blackouts,” Harry Jaya Pahlawan said. But he also added that in case of disruptions in the system like by external causes like kites, it is beyond PLN‘s plans.
Construction services sector projected to grow 9.2 percent Antara
JAKARTA - Vice President Boediono said the construction industry was projected to grow by 8.4 to 9.2 percent in the next five years. “The construction services and infrastructure sectors will make rapid progress in the years to come,” the vice president said at the opening of an Indonesian Builders Association (Gapensi) national leadership meeting here on Monday. He said of the gross domestic product (GDP) Rp5,000 trillion in 2009, Rp555 trillion came from the construction services sector. “In fact, the construction services’ contribution to GDP was about ten percent, and it will continue to grow by 8.4 to 9.2 percent in the next five years,” the vice president said. At the meeting which was also attended by Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi and Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto, Vice President Boediono admitted that although the construction services sector was making a significant contribution to GDP, there were several obstacles that hampered its progress. The obstacles, according to the vice president, were among others
complicated long process of bureaucracy, and inadequate national logistic system or interconnection that caused a high cost. “Therefore the government will do it best to shorten the bureaucratic process, to improve the national logistics system, to cut unnecessary costs, to optimize production result, and to increase its benefits for the people,” Vice President Boediono said. He added that more efficient cost would increase the competitiveness of the construction services sector in both the domestic and international market. “We have great potentials in the construction services sector because of our strategic geographic location and abundant energy and raw material resources, but it should be supported by an adequate national logistics system,” the vice president said. Boediono said he also supported the partnership between the government and the contractors’ community. “The government is certainly responsible for encouraging and fostering the contractors’ community and increase their mastery of technology,” the vice president said.

Bali Today Chinese tourist arrivals in Bali down 2.67 percent Antara DENPASAR - The number of Chinese tourists visiting Bali was 83,535 during January-May 2010, down 2.67 percent from 85,828 in the same period last year. However, China remained in third place after Australia and Japan among the top ten countries of origin of tourists who came to Bali, according to Ida Komang Wisnu, head of the Bali provincial central bureau of statistics, Monday. In 2009, a total of 206,151 Chinese tourists visited the resort island, up 56.98 percent from 131,319 in the previous year. Bali has 766 tourist guides who speak Mandarin. According to Ida Komang Wisnu, Chinese tourists constituted around 8.77 percent of the total of 952,073 foreign tourists visiting Bali in the first five months of 2010, up 9.43 percent from 870,029 in the same period last year. Ida Komang Wisnu said of the top ten countries sending tourists to Bali, five recorded significant increases, and five others declines. Denpasar - Mari Nabeshima, a great artist, passed away on Sunday, July 4th 2010, in Wangaya Hospital. The wife of the Balinese artist I Kadek Suardana, died after suffering from dengue fever. Gede Aryantha Soetama, relative of Suardana, said “the late Nabhesima was treated intensively for four days but the doctor can not rescue him.” She was performing in the 32nd Bali Art Festival (BAF) in art center Denpasar. Nabhesima was also took part in an ethnic fashion music entitled “tajen” on Saturday, June 26 th
2010. She was very keen in learning Balinese art and culture such as gender, wayang, and others. She was mastering many traditional Balinese dances. The late Nabhesima will be burn in Ngaben ceremony on Friday, July 9 th 2010 in Badung cemetery. Cultural Preservation in line with Tourism Promotion Secluded within the silence of Denpasar City, the Annual Bali Arts Festival (BAF) has become more than a vivacious art extravaganza for Balinese artists and community. Since few years ago, the art celebration could have drawn the participation of other region across the archipelago. Likewise, it conjured up the interests of some foreign art troupes to join. Therefore, BAF has turned into an international art rendezvous on a bijou island. The one-month art season on Bali Island definitely pampers the thirst and desire of art enjoyers. How to empower local farmers, fishermen and other workers in tourism activity directly or indirectly should become one of the purposes of this program. By doing so, they could behave more naturally when photographed by tourists, not grumble because they get nothing from their pose. Sticky Rice Rolls served with Palm Sugar Syrup (Lupis) Ingredients * 200 gr. glutinous rice flour * 1 Tbs. slaked lime water * banana leaves * ¼ grated coconut * pinch of salt * Palm sugar syrup Directions Soak the glutinuous rice in water for an hour and drain. Add the slaked lime water to make the rice rolls more solid, and stir. Take a piece of banana leaf and fill it ¾ full with glutinuous rice (just like making rice rolls). Secure the ends and tie rolls with string so that they will not burst during the boiling. Put the rolls in a saucepan and cover with water. Boil for 4 hours, drain and allow the rolls to cool. Add more hot water during the cooking when necessary. Serve the rolls by cutting it into 2 cm thick slices.Sprinkle the grated coconut which a pinch of salt has been added on top of the rolls and pour the palm sugar syrup over them. Troubled Toyota recalls about 92,000 cars in Japan Associated Press Writer
TOKYO - Toyota started recalling more than 90,000 luxury Lexus and Crown vehicles Monday in Japan over defective engines — the latest setback for the automaker beset with quality problems. Toyota Motor Corp. spokesman Paul Nolasco said recalls in overseas markets will follow soon, totaling about 270,000 vehicles globally. That includes: 138,000 vehicles in the U.S., 15,000 in Europe, 10,000 in the Middle East, 6,000 in China, 4,000 in Canada, and 8,000 in other regions. Toyota told the Japanese government Monday it was recalling 91,903 vehicles for flaws in the valve springs, a crucial engine component, that could make the automobile stall while in motion. “We apologize for inconveniencing our customers. We hope to fix the problem soon,” Nolasco said. The quality problem affecting top-of-the-line products comes as Toyota struggles to move on from massive global recalls that started in October. It already has recalled more than 8.5 million vehicles for various problems, including stick-
ing gas pedals, braking software glitches and defective floor mats. The world’s top automaker was fined a record $16.4 million in the United States for responding too slowly when the recall crisis erupted. The latest woes come on top of a recall last week for 17,000 Lexus hybrids after testing showed fuel can spill during a rear-end crash. Analysts said Monday’s recall did little to instill consumer confidence after Toyota President Akio Toyoda, facing shareholders last month, vowed to improve vehicle quality inspections. “It is not doing a good job in communicating a message about what exactly it is doing to beef up quality checks,” said Shotaro Noguchi, auto analyst with Nomura Securities Co. in Tokyo. “So it is hard for people to believe Toyota is taking the customer’s view as it is promising to do.”
The company announced the latest quality problems last week. Some 180,000 of the defective automobiles were sold overseas, 138,000 of them in the United States. No accidents or injuries have been reported because of the defect. About 220 complaints have been reported. Toyota said it was replacing the valve spring in the recalled vehicles, produced between July 2005 and August 2008 — Lexus models GS350, GS450h, GS460, IS350, LS460, LS600h, LS600hL and Crown models. Toyota also faces more than 200 lawsuits in the U.S. tied to accidents involving defective automobiles, the lower resale value of Toyota vehicles, and a drop in its stock value. The Tokyo market reacted with calm to Toyota’s recall news. Toyota shares gained 0.5 percent to finish at 3,035 yen.

But he warned that growth could not be taken for granted in industrialised countries, saying that “it depends on us, it depends on the capacity of the industrialized countries to reinforce confidence.” “This is the reason why it is so important that we have fiscal policies designed to reinforce confidence of households ... of businesses ... of savers and of investors,” he said. Trichet also said that austerity drives being implemented in several European countries would not hurt the recovery, as some top economists and US officials have suggested. Global stocks suffered heavy losses and bonds rallied last week as a string of dismal economic data from the United States and China raised doubts about the health of the global economic recovery.

SOUTH DEERFIELD - Maxixe, a Brazilian relative of the cucumber, is relatively unknown in the U.S., but it may one day be as common as cilantro as farmers and consumers embrace more so-called ethnic vegetables. Agriculture experts at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and elsewhere are teaching farmers to grow non-native vegetables that appeal to a growing market of African, Asian and Latin American immigrants. These immigrants and their children already account for more than onethird of produce sales in supermarkets, said Frank Mangan, a plant and soil sciences professor at UMass. And as other customers become more familiar with ethnic foods, experts expect sales to grow even more. The number of Massachusetts farmers markets that carry ethnic vegetables jumped by 25 percent in a year, to 202 last year, said Scott Soares, commissioner of the state’s Department of Agricultural Resources. Bob Ehart, public policy director of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, said the organization doesn’t track the popularity of ethnic crops, but the trend in Massachusetts appears to be happening in other states as well. Sales of ethnic vegetables have benefited from “buy local” marketing cam-
paigns and federal farm legislation giving states grants to expand specialty crop production, he said. There’s also been a greater emphasis on marketing specialty vegetables, with New York and New Jersey starting programs aimed at selling produce to ethnic groups. Glen Hill, executive director of the Minnesota Food Association, noted that cilantro was considered a specialty item 25 years ago, but “now it’s on everything.” Bok choy, a Chinese cabbage, also was once considered exotic. “Now, it’s another leafy green,” Hill said. His association helps Hmong, Kenyan, Mexican and other immigrant farmers adapt to U.S. agriculture and introduces them to local markets where they’ve been able to sell growing amounts of mustard greens, beans and other ethnic crops. “We see a huge demand for it across the board, from restaurants to small stores, big stores and farmers markets,” he said. With maxixe (pronounced mahSHEESH’), Mangan and others at UMass grow chipilin (cheep-LEEN’), a legume from Mexico and Central America; jilo (heeLOH’), an eggplant-like crop grown in Brazil and West Africa; and hierba mora (eerBAH’ MOR-rah), a member of the tomato family. They sell vegetables grown at their research farm to Whole Foods Market and other groceries in New York, Washington,
D.C., New Jersey, Rhode Island and elsewhere. UMass graduate students, including some from Latin America, handle the marketing. Mangan said UMass tries to assemble a marketing package for farmers that include where and how to sell their produce and how to price it. The research farm tests ways to grow various crops to take the risk out of farmers’ work. Even if farmers grow only a few ethnic crops, they benefit by having a greater variety that reduces the likelihood of serious financial problems if one or two crops fail, Mangan said. Bill Barrington, sales manager for the Pioneer Valley Growers Association, a group of 30 farmers in the Connecticut River Valley in western Massachusetts, said ethnic crops represent a small share of what they grow compared with such items as sweet corn, pepper and cucumber, but that could change as immigration increases. “I don’t know if it’s going to be as big as summer squash or zucchini, but as the market evolves it will be more important,” Barrington said. Whole Foods Market buys some produce from Mangan for what the supermarket chains sees as a growing market for ethnic crops. It also works with farmers to spur production of vegetables that have caught on with consumers, who’ve read about them or tried them in restaurants, said Bill McGowan, Whole Foods’ regional produce coordinator in Cambridge, Mass. “We tell (farmers) what’s selling,” McGowan said. “Farmers are always interested in new and unique things. They’re interested in things that can make it to market.”

The demonstrators assembled outside the island’s parliament, currently in recess, chanting slogans against the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) and the island’s President Ma Ying-jeou. “The ECFA is a conspiracy of the Ma Yingjeou administration and the Chinese Communist Party,” said Tsai Ting-kui, the leader of the crowd, waving his fist in the air. “If it is so good as Ma claims, then why doesn’t he let the people decide whether or not they want it?” An anti-Chinese party has filed a second referendum proposal over ECFA after the first was turned down by the government’s Referendum Review Committee. The group pledged to continue the protest over coming weeks as parliament mulls an extra session to ratify the agreement. The pact, signed last week in the southwest Chinese city of Chongqing, is seen as the boldest step yet towards reconciliation between the former arch-foes, more than 60 years after the end of a civil war that drove them apart.

‘Twilight’ falls sharply but makes it to $161M Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES – “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” is waning at the box office but still has gotten off to a blockbuster start with $161 million in its first five days, according to studio estimates Sunday. The third chapter in Summit Entertainment’s vampire romance fell off sharply after debuting last Wednesday with $68.5 million. That was the second-best opening-day haul ever, behind its predecessor, last year’s “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” which opened with $72.7 million. After that huge first day, “Eclipse” averaged about $23 million daily over the next four days. That includes an estimate for a slow Sunday as people turned their attention to Fourth of July activities. “Weather has a lot to do with a Fourth of July opening. I’m not looking to make excuses, but between barbecues and fireworks, we have a lot of competition,” said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Summit. “I do think people will come back to the movie.” Its total through Sunday came in well short of the $200 million mark set last year by “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” the recordholder for best five-day start for movies opening on Wednesday. “Eclipse” easily held the No. 1 spot for the weekend, though its $69 million Friday-to-Sunday total was
only a fraction more than what the movie took in just on opening day. “New Moon” took in $142.8 million in its first weekend last November, though the movie opened on Friday and the figure includes its record opening-day gross. Summit estimates “Eclipse” will climb to around $181 million domestically by Monday. The movie also has added $100.2 million in 42 overseas markets. “Eclipse” has found a wider fan base than “New Moon,” with a bigger percentage of males turning out for the latest installment. Female fans accounted for 80 percent of the audience on “New Moon” but only 65 percent of crowds for “Eclipse,” Summit reported. The latest adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling novels, “Eclipse” continues the love triangle involving a broody teen (Kristen Stewart), her vampire sweetheart (Robert Pattinson) and her werewolf pal (Taylor Lautner). The weekend’s other new wide release, Paramount’s “The Last Airbender,” opened well with $40.7 million to finish at No. 2 for the three-
day weekend. The movie took in $53.2 million since debuting Thursday. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan (“The Sixth Sense”), “The Last Airbender” is based on the cartoon series about a youth with mythical powers who can unite four warring nations. “The Last Airbender” found a solid audience despite dreadful reviews from critics, who found the plot muddled and the dialogue stilted. Disney’s animated smash “Toy Story 3,” which had been No. 1 the previous two weekends, slipped to third-place with $30.2 million, raising its total to $289 million. “Toy Story 3” is about to pass last year’s “Up” at $293 million to become No. 2 on the chart of Pixar Animation’s blockbusters. The Disney unit’s topgrossing film is “Finding Nemo” at $339.7 million. Hollywood’s overall business rose, helping to shore up this summer’s sliding box office. Total revenues came in at about $193 million from Friday to Sunday, up 19 percent from the Fourth of July weekend last year, according to boxoffice tracker Hollywood.com. Revenues this season are running at $2.16 billion, down a fraction from summer 2009. Factoring in higher ticket prices, though, movie attendance this summer is down 6.7 percent, according to Hollywood.com.

From the opening notes of “The Pleasure Principle” to “Control” to “Rhythm Nation,” the Grammy Award-winning singer enticed, teased and brought her fans on a journey through her No. 1 hits. “She was unbelievable,” said Ed Downs of Miami. “It was definitely worth the wait. I’m happy to see her make a comeback. It was impressive.” Jackson marked her return by closing the festival’s first night inside the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. It was her first time at the festival, which runs through Sunday. Former NBA player Anferenee Hardaway called Jackson’s performance “absolutely perfect,” and said no one could tell she had been off the concert circuit for any length of time. “She definitely gets better with age,” he said, smiling. PARIS – Lab work on mice has opened up a novel way of closing a gateway to the AIDS virus, according to a study published on Friday. The doorway in question is called CCR5, a protein that helps the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) penetrate a cell, its first step before hijacking the cellular machinery and reproducing itself. Around a decade ago, scientists discovered that people who had a tiny gap in the genetic code for making CCR5 were surprisingly resistant to HIV infection and took more time to progress to AIDS. This gene variant, known as CCR5 delta 32, results in smaller CCR5 proteins, which prevents most strains of HIV from infecting the cell. Testing a theory, scientists in the United States took immature haematopoietic cells — which make immune and red blood cells — from mice. They modified some of the cells, using a brand-new enzyme “cutter” to delete the famous
CCR delta 32 section. As a result, when these cells matured and divided, they lacked the key code for making normal CCR5. The modified cells were reinjected back into the rodents, which were then exposed to HIV. Twelve weeks after infection, the animals had recovered their stock of immune T-cells and their levels of HIV were very low. But “control” mice that had not received the modified cells were highly infected and their immune systems weak. If the approach is found to be safe and effective on humans, it opens the way to creating a long-term generation of HIV-
resistant T-cells in the body — in other words, a patient could suppress HIV without taking powerful antiretroviral drugs. The experiment headed by Paula Cannon of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and reported in the journal Nature Biotechnology, is the third avenue that has opened up for CCR5 investigators . Drugs that inhibit CCR5 are already being licensed as “salvage” therapy for patients whose immune systems have been crippled by HIV. Doctors are also testing in trials on volunteers a CCR delta 32 technique, but using T-cells as opposed to stem cells. Around two million people died from AIDS in 2008, and 33.4 million were living with HIV, according to UN figures published last November. The International AIDS Conference, an event held once every two years, takes place in Vienna from July 18-23.

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Todd Atwood says he doesn’t worry too much about accidents when walking down the street using his iPhone to make calls, send text messages or check his e-mail. But he’s seen the consequences of paying more attention to the gadget than what’s ahead. “I saw someone walk right into a sign,” recalled the 32-year-old Silicon Valley resident. “She didn’t hurt herself but she was startled. She dropped her phone, then her friends starting laughing at her. It was funny but I guess it could’ve been more serious.” While using a cell phone while driving has triggered the most alarm bells and prompted laws in several states, experts say, pedestrians are also suffering the consequences of mobile distraction — tripping on curbs, walking into traffic, even stepping into manholes as they chat or type while walking. To help these sidewalk stumblers step out more safely, technology companies are now stepping in, creating applications that do everything from make a smartphone screen transparent to transform speech into text. Whether the technologies will prevent injuries and embarrassment remains to be seen, they are being welcomed as a move in the right direction. “I don’t think we’re going to eliminate people from walking into things outright and of course we want people to be responsible, but what we’re trying to do is eliminate the friction point ... and give the user back a little mental bandwith,” said Travis Bogard, the executive director for product management and strategy at San Franciscobased Aliph, which makes bluetooth earpieces. Aliph’s Jawbone earpiece incorporates voice-to-text
technology which eliminates the need to glance down at the keypad to send an e-mail or text message. It also has caller ID that speaks to the wearer so he or she doesn’t have to pick up the phone to see who is calling and a function that allows wearers to call up their contacts using their voice rather than fingers. “All of this gets rid of the need to touch your phone, which causes your eyes to move away from what’s in front of you,” Bogard said. Other programs also on the market aim to make it easier to type while walking. They tap into a smartphone’s camera to beam an image of what’s in front of the user over the message screen so typers can see what’s ahead. They include Text Vision, Type n Walk and Email ‘n Walk. “See-through screens, yes, would solve part of the problem,” said Clifford Nass, a professor of communications at Stanford University and one of the authors of a study on multitasking. “But there’s still a second problem, which has to do with engagement of the brain.” Same goes with voice-to-text technology, Nass said.

New York on Friday, Kyodo quoted Kobayashi as saying the event “holds a special place in my heart,” but added he did not agree with the conditions. Kobayashi became a celebrity and a hero in Japan by eating his way to victory from 2001 to 2006, a feat that remains unmatched. But Chestnut has won the title for the last three years, setting a world record by scarfing down 68 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes last year. Two years ago, Chestnut beat Kobayashi in a five-dog eat off, after they tied at 59 franks each. Chestnut says he still sees Kobayashi as a rival — and a bitter one. They don’t talk to each other, and did not shake hands after last year’s eat off. Kobayashi lost to Chestnut
last year by only 3 1/2 hot dogs. In May last year, Kobayashi beat Chestnut in a pizza eating contest, consuming 5 3/4 pizzas in six minutes. Each pizza weighed one pound (0.45 kilogram). Chestnut could only manage 5 1/2 in that time. If Kobayashi is out of the game, Chestnut’s toughest opponent may be Bob Shoudt, the world’s No. 2 eater, and Patrick Bertoletti, ranked No. 4 in the world. The 95th annual hot-dog eating contest will take place in Coney Island, Brooklyn on Sunday. U.S. TV viewers can catch the spectacle on ESPN. The contest has been held every Independence Day since 1916.

Brazil sack Dunga, players face angry backlash Agence France Presse
RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazil coach Dunga was sacked on Sunday following the team’s World Cup quarter-final exit with charismatic Luiz Felipe Scolari, who won the title in 2002, immediately being tipped to take over. “The cycle of work started in 2006 and which culminated with the elimination of Brazil in the World Cup in South Africa is finished,” said a statement from the Brazilian football confederation (CBF). “The CBF announces the dismissal of the technical commission of the Brazilian team. The new commission will be announced at the end of July.” Dunga, 46, who skippered Brazil to the 1994 World Cup, had been national team coach since 2006. He had already said that he was intending to step down after four years following the five-time champions 2-1 defeat to Holland in the quarter-finals in Port Elizabeth on Friday. However, on his arrival home on Sunday, Dunga did not rule out staying in the job. “I am going to rest before meeting, in one or two weeks’ time, the president of the CBF, Ricardo Teixeira to talk about it (extending his stay in charge),” Dunga told a news conference before the CBF quickly shattered his optimism. Brazilian media immediately started speculating on the identity of Dunga’s successor whose job will be guiding the team on home soil at 2014 World Cup. The favourite is Scolari, who won the World Cup in 2002, although he has ruled himself out saying he intends to honour his contract with Palmeiras which runs until 2012. “I have a contract with Palmeiras and it is here that I am going to work,” Scolari told El Dorado radio. “It would be great to finish my career coaching a team at the World Cup to be staged in Brazil, but I cannot respond to any offer until after 2012.” Other names being mentioned are Mano Menezes, currently coach at Corinthians, and exAC Milan boss Leonardo. Jorginho, who was Dunga’s assistant in South Africa, is also believed to be in the running. POTCHEFSTROOM, South Africa – Spain coach Vicente del Bosque on Sunday saluted what he saw as a sea-change in Germany’s style of play ahead of the two countries’ World Cup semi-final on Wednesday. Del Bosque said he did not believe the Germans would be treating the meeting in Durban as a revenge mission for their Euro 2008 final loss to the Spanish as his opponents had clearly moved on. “I don’t think you can talk about revenge between two great teams. Both will be going all out to get to a World Cup final,” said Del Bosque. “They recently set out to change a (style of) football which appeared to be worn out and tired. They have managed to refresh the team since the Euros and the proof of that is in their showings here.” “They have got a great group together,” the former Real Madrid boss added. Spain came to South Africa as the European side most favoured to distinguish itself after just one defeat in 48 matches. They have generally recovered well from a shock opening

LONDON – Rafael Nadal revealed he had to shrug off a bout of nerves before demolishing Tomas Berdych in the Wimbledon men’s singles final on Sunday. Nadal looked ice cool as he routed Berdych 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 to claim his second Wimbledon title, but inside the Spaniard’s stomach was churning as he tried to deal with the enormity of such a significant occasion. The 24-year-old felt most under pressure at the start of the second set when he allowed Berdych two break points, but he didn’t take long to overcome his jitters and deliver another breath-taking display of brutal hitting. “I was a little bit more nervous than usual,” he said. “I was a little bit lucky on few moments with the break-points, especially when he missed a backhand into the net. “But if you are not nervous in the final of Wimbledon, you are not human!” With his nerves conquered, Nadal was able to coast to the eighth Grand Slam title of his career in such comfort that there was hardly any drama to excite the capacity crowd on Centre Court. But that mattered little to the world number one, who has now regained the Wimbledon title he won in 2008 and was unable to defend last year due to a serious knee injury. Nadal admitted that first title at
the All England Club will always be the most special because of the dramatic nature of his five-set victory over Roger Federer. “It is difficult to say this one is more special. The other one was more dramatic in the way I won. So the first title is always very, very special,” he said. “But for sure after a difficult year for me to be back at my favorite tournament and to finish with the trophy is amazing for me. “It was very difficult for me to be back at my best after injury. But I did it, so it is a very important and emotional moment for me.” Nadal has now won the French Open and Wimbledon in the same calender year twice - a feat long regarded as the tennis holy grail before Nadal starting to rip up the record books. And after winning in Roland Garros Sunday, I am practising on Monday at Queen’s Club because I know how difficult is to change and adapt the surface. “It is difficult but if you have experience and a lot of matches on grass that helps you. “It is important to have the movement on grass and I move well on this court. That’s a very important part of the game. “Sure my serve has improved a little bit and it is important to play more aggressive here than on the rest of the surfaces. But the main thing is to really want to improve on every surface.” Nadal celebrated his victory over Berdych with a somersault across the hallowed Centre Court turf and he insisted the gesture was purely instinctive. “I didn’t think about it. That was my reaction in that moment,” he said with a smile.

ATLANTA, Georgia – NBA All-Star guard Joe Johnson has agreed to a maximum contract that will keep him with the Atlanta Hawks, his agent said Sunday. Arn Tellem confirmed an entry he wrote for the Huffington Post website, saying Johnson “announced his intention to resign with the Hawks for six more years.” Tellem wrote that Johnson, who could have signed as a free agent with another team, chose to remain in Atlanta over Chicago and New York, where he would have been reunited with Mike D’Antoni, his former coach in Phoenix. Under NBA rules, a team is allowed to pay more to keep a free agent than other teams can offer in salary if he opts to move. In addition to the financial incentive, the Hawks have reached the second round of the playoffs the past two years, and Tellem said Johnson believed winning in Atlanta “would be more meaningful”. “When the Hawks offered the maximum - six years - he happily reciprocated,” Tellem wrote. The Hawks have not yet commented. While free agent negotiations are in full swing after the free agency period opened on July 1, no deals can be signed and made official until July 8.
BRUSSELS – Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland retained the race leader’s yellow jersey after the crash-marred Tour de France first stage won in spectacular fashion by Alessandro Petacchi of Lampre on Sunday. Italian sprinter Petacchi, making his first appearance at the race in more than five years, upset predictions when he finished a reduced bunch sprint ahead of Australian Mark Renshaw and Norwegian Thor Hushovd. Numerous crashes occurred in the closing kilometres of the 223.5km ride from Rotterdam to Brussels, leaving some of the top favourites for stage victory out of the running. Spanish fast man Oscar Freire, of Rabobank, was brought down along with Cervelo’s Jeremy Hunt when the Briton took a wrong turn on a tight bend with two kilometres to go. Another massive crash with just a kilometre to go reduced the peloton further. British sprint king Mark Cavendish, the winner of six stages last year, was among the big names also left out of contention, leaving his lead-out man Renshaw to go it alone.

Lorenzo: This is very special Cataluna - Jorge Lorenzo’s third race victory in three weekends means he could skip the next two races and still be leading the MotoGP World Championship. Repsol Honda riders Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso both joined Lorenzo in leading Sunday’s Catalan Grand Prix, but couldn’t keep their RCVs on track. Pedrosa got the holeshot, then ran wide at the very first turn dropping him down the order while Dovizioso led on lap four and stuck with Lorenzo after the Spaniard got back ahead, only to fall from a close second place on lap 15 of 25. Ducati’s Casey Stoner, the only other threat to Lorenzo, ran wide at the start of lap six and spent much of the race unsuccessfully challenging Pedrosa for what became second. Lorenzo was thus left to cruise to a five-second home victory, marking his fifth win from seven starts and handing him a 52 point title lead over Pedrosa heading into the German Grand Prix in two weeks’ time. “This is very special,” said Lorenzo, who lost out to teammate Valentino Rossi at the final turn of last year’s race. “After losing so closely last year I was happy but not completely so and
today I can say I am completely happy, winning here at my home race. “It was very difficult today because it was so hot and the front tyre was sliding a lot. I thought I was going to have a big battle with Dovizioso because he was pushing very hard but then he crashed and I was alone; it was lucky for me because then I was able to take it more gently to the finish. “I think I rode a clever race today. I am so grateful to my team and to everyone at Yamaha and Bridgestone because they are working so hard to make our bike competitive at every track. I also want to say thank you to all the fans that came to watch today, it is a great feeling for me to win here in front of them all.” Lorenzo has taken a hat-trick of wins once before in his career, in his 250cc days, and is the first Yamaha rider to take three wins from three poles since Eddie Lawson in 1986.

Stoner: Impossible to pass Pedrosa After running wide into turn one on lap six of Sunday’s Catalan Grand Prix, Ducati’s Casey Stoner spent most of the race trying to overtake Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa. Pedrosa had also run wide at turn one, at the very start of the race, and the battle between the rumoured 2011 team-mates was initially for third position, which then became a fight for second when Andrea Dovizioso fell. But Stoner simply couldn’t find a way past, crossing the line 0.2sec behind Pedrosa to nonetheless claim his second podium in a row. Race winner Jorge Lorenzo was five seconds in front. “The mistake was my own fault. I got a bit too much speed down the main straight - I got a slipstream off both Jorge and Dovi - so I decided to just go wide rather than risk losing the front and going into everyone,” said Stoner, who had spent the opening laps battling for the lead.
“The bike didn’t feel too good. We changed the set-up after warm-up and it was difficult to ride at the start, but better at the end. I got past de Puniet and then as I came up behind Dani I thought I could run better lap times than him. I thought I’d try to pass him, but that was just an impossible battle. “Dani rode really well today, he didn’t make any mistakes. He was coming out of the corners good, clean. Didn’t give me an opportunity to get past. I was on his rear wheel for most of the race, but just wasn’t able to get the job done. So hats off to Dani. “But we’ve got to be happy with another podium today.” Having put his nightmare start to the season behind him, Stoner has now moved up to sixth in the championship, just two points behind fourth placed team-mate Nicky Hayden. “I am happy to see that Casey is back to being… well, Casey!” said team manager Vittoriano Guareschi. “Even after running off track he re-
covered with a lot of determination and tried his best to the end but he could do no more than he did.” Hayden meanwhile had a ‘tough’ ride to eighth. “What a tough race!” said Nicky. “We thought we had found something in the warm-up this morning using a worn tyre but in the race with the extra grip from a new tyre the balance just wasn’t the same. “I was really struggling over the first few laps and held myself up on my elbow a couple of times. The situation improved in the second half of the race, I was able to push a little harder to the point where I thought I could make up some positions. “I lost too much time behind Melandri though and we finished eighth. It’s not a great result but at least we have brought some points home and we’re now fourth in the championship. If we want to stay there we have to do much better and get back to the level we were at a couple of races ago.”
