An Australian tourist, Anggus Mccaskil, 57, was arrested by police because he was proven to bring drugs. The suspect was arrested by the police officers around Jalan Raya Kediri, Tuban. Likewise, Kuta Police forces also arrested two local residents who brought methamphetamine. When captured, the suspect Anggus kept five packages of cocaine hidden in a wallet. Such arrest began from the information delivered by community where perpetrator was alleged to carry some drugs. Police officers in plainclothes then conducted reconnaissance against foreigner living in Villa Bobo Kuta, Badung. As a result, police officers intercepted Anggus Mccaskil who was around Jalan Raya Kediri, Tuban. “When he was searched, the suspect took five packages of heroin stored in a wallet,” police sources said on last Saturday (Jul 3). After seizing the evidence in the form of five packages of heroin, police immediately brought the per-

From arena of 32nd Bali Arts Festival:
Spirit of competition through traditional drums play ASIDE from having art activities such as Jegog Mebarung and Makepung (bull race), Jembrana Regency also has Kendang Mebarung art. The three art compositions are filled with the spirit of competition upholding the values of sportsmanship. One of the art compositions containing the spirit of competition that once displayed in the arena of 32nd Bali Arts Festival (BAF), last Saturday (Jul 3) is Kendang Mebarung. This art was very interesting, because it displayed the form of musical instruments in the form of traditional two-sided and jumbosized drum. Shown in the Ayodya Stage, the art of Kendang Mebarung entitled ‘Adnyana Tunggal’ from Pergung Village, Jembrana presented some song compositions of bebarungan through Angklung music in combination with the melodious sound of pounding jumbo-sized drums. Two personnel were respectively assigned to hit the huge wooden drums with diameter of 85 cm and 2.50 meters long and another drum having diameter of 75 cm and 2.50 meters long with drum stick of small size. The stick made from rattan and the cow’s horns was too small if compared to the size of the drums. According to Director of Gamelan
Music, Wayan Gama Astawa, the two huge drums were very old and made from jackfruit wood and demulih wood. “We really do not know exactly when they were made. We just inherit them as they are,” he said. Kendang Mebarung was accompanied by angklung music of Jembrana version having slightly different pitch from that of other angklung in general. Such angklung music had a pitch as that of Jegog gamelan. “This music art poses a heritage which is generally performed in rituals like Deva Yajna (sacrifice to gods) and Pitri Yajna (sacrifice to ancestor). In addition, this art was also often performed in particular events. In the presentation of last Saturday, the Kendang Mebarung art troupe of Adnyana Tunggal from Pergung Village led by I Nengah Rica presented some music compositions such as Tabuh Pengungkab Sabda, Tabuh Bebarungan and Tabuh Pemeras (Closure). Strongly Suspected Being Murdered The Dead Driver Case Denpasar (Bali Post) –
The mysterious death of Gede Darta (42) found its answer. Darta who lives at Gang Penyu, Banjar Pegok, Jalan Raya Sesetan, Denpasar was murdered. The reason was after the body’s medically inspected, it seems the victim’s been beaten by a blunt element with bruises at the head, left cheek, chin, and chest. The victim’s wife has left and was told to be at Java. “Police can’t conclude what caused it yet,” Denpasar Police Department Chief, Adjunct Police Commissioner Gede Ganefo stated on Saturday (3/7). Police are still deepening its investigation. It is strongly suspected as a suicide as well as there was a mineral bottle with thought to have poison in it. “This evidence is still being inspected at forensic lab,” Ganefo added. The victim had gone since 12 days
ago at 1 pm. At that time, brother of victim caught him bringing a mineral bottle. The wife, Ni Ketut Purwati, was gone since 6 days ago. Weirdly, since she was gone she did not have any intention to find her husband. “There were arguments between them, and investigators are still waiting for her statement,” said a source from the police department. Meanwhile in the crime scene, a quite huge stone was found and the victim’s still fully clothed. The body gave a rotten scent especially from the darkening head. As told before, Gede Darta found dead at a grass field around Bypass Ngurah Rai Street, Suwung Kangin, Denpasar. Theme of BAF has not been maximally included in art compositions EACH implementation of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) is always designed with a central theme and sub-themes. The themes in use are expected not merely as just a theme, but they should also be translated into the composition of arts. Even, they must be interpreted and implemented in the daily life of the Balinese community. We know the 32nd Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2010 has central theme Sudamala: Comprehend Purity of Conscience, while the theme of Parade is Bhuana Kerthi: Purification of the Universe; theme of Performance is Wibawa Mana: Sincere offerings. Meanwhile, the competitions and parades theme Paras Paros Upasraya: Vying in togetherness; workshop themes Dharmatula Subhaprawerti: Considering a wise measure and the exhibition themes Silvahita Karana: Skills as sources of blessing sources. How about the art composition, have they referred to the theme? An artist who is also a lecturer at the Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI) Denpasar, Nyoman Cerita, said that art performance of 32nd BAF in general had referred to the theme. However, packaging of art composition should be made more mature in order to have divine inspiration or metaksu. But, he admitted the interpretation remained adequately difficult, so there were various perceptions in translating it into the work of arts. In order to be more focused, he said, the theme of BAF needed to be clarified or sharpened. All this time, the themes were sometimes only understood by the top level. On that account, in order it could be well translated into performing arts, the theme of BAF should be socialized maximally. Lack of socialization caused the theme less to be maximally interpreted into the art composition. “Here are the importance of socialization and the role of a curator,” he said.
Former Minister of Culture and Tourism, I Gede Ardika, as a keynote speaker in the seminar of 32nd BAF, last Friday (Jul 2), said the impact of BAF in the general development in Bali had not been seen enough within the society. Theme of annual BAF determined every year was not quite touching and manifested in society. So, one of the functions of art to convey “a message” to the community had not come true yet. Meanwhile, the theme launched tended to function more internally than externally. It was a challenge for the artists to more promote the accomplishment of the message contained in the theme of BAF in the daily life of Balinese community. How about the theme Sudamala in the 32nd Bali Arts Festival? The humanist Prof. Dr. Wayan Dibia said in the present context the theme Sudamala of the 32nd BAF: ‘To comprehend the purity of conscience’ should encourage all parties to explore or deeply involved in the purity of our conscience as the Balinese. Some purities of conscience of the Balinese people were honesty, sincerity and determination (of faith). In the context of preserving and maintaining cultural values and preserving the nature of Bali, values of honesty and sincerity were necessary to be put forward. “In maintaining the nature of Bali, preserving cultures and empowering the residents of Bali, we should always adhere to the values of honesty and seriousness or sincerity. Honesty, sincerity and seriousness are parts of the purity of our conscience,” said Dibia who is also a professor at ISI Denpasar. In maintaining Bali, we must hold fast to purity of conscience. How to guard the values of honesty and sincerity constancy of faith can actually be seen from the composition of colossal ballet of ISI Denpasar presenting the sequel of Anggada Duta or the Envoy Anggada (where the President had time to
watch when he opened the 32nd Bali Arts Festival, last Saturday, Jun 12, at Denpasar Art Center). As an envoy undertaking a noble task—requesting Ravana to hand over Shita, the consort of Lord Rama—Anggada was demanded to have firmness of faith. Anggada had been prompted by Ravana in order not to take side with Rama. If he did not have the firmness of faith, incitement of Ravana was going to change his mind. In the story, it was narrated Ravana had instigated or reverse the mind of Anggada in order he would not take side with Rama, because the father of Anggada named Subali was killed by Rama. However, the incitement could not work at all. Lord Rama was able to bring Anggada. “That’s the importance of having the purity of conscience, so that he is not easy to be incited by others,” he said. Initiator of the theme of Bali Arts Festival 2006-2010, Dr. Nyoman Suarka said that the theme Sudamala had been designed far in advance. Through the theme, Bali was expected to be in well-maintained purity. Bali should be sudamala or pure and clean. Meanwhile, the theme sudamala in the context of BAF ideally could be implemented in an art composition, and thematically sudamala was in the concept—such as the concept of purification and sanctification. “In art composition, sudamala can be functioned as the theme of performance. As a name, sudamala can be attached to the designation of tirtha sudamala, klakat sudamala, nyuh sudamala and so forth,” said the professor at Faculty of Letters, Udayana University, Denpasar. In the context of maintaining Bali that is holy and clean, this theme sudamala should be embodied into practical or real action. Under conditions of Bali’s nature that had been like this, we should be able to restore the sudamala of Bali. In this regard, it is how we should keep the sacredness of an area. (lun)

Both men, Jaroslaw Kaczynski and Bronislaw Komorowski, are former anti-communist activists with conservative, Catholic upbringings. Yet they differ sharply on key issues and the outcome of the election is expected to have a significant influence on whether the country pushes through more market reforms or preserves significant welfare benefits. An election was originally set for the fall but had to be called early to replace President Lech Kaczynski, who died on April 10 in a plane crash in western Russia. The crash also killed his wife Maria and 94 others, including many high-ranking military and government officials.
The first round of voting on June 20 ended with no candidate winning an absolute majority, leading to Sunday’s runoff between Komorowski, the acting president and parliament speaker, and Kaczynski, the identical twin brother of Lech. More than 30 million of Poland’s 38 million citizens are registered to vote. The first exit polls will be released immediately after polls close at 8 p.m. (1800 GMT), but official results are not expected until Monday. For most of the campaign Komorowski, a moderate in the governing pro-EU Civic Platform party, has been favored, largely because he is seen as a reliable choice and because his government steered Poland
through the global economic downturn without falling into recession. But a survey published Friday showed a rise in support for Kaczynski, whose traditional conservative voter base has been reinforced by sympathy votes following his brother’s death and the toning down of his image. In the first round, in which 10 candidates competed, Komorowski got 41.5 percent of the votes and Kaczynski 36.5 percent. Poland’s president has many ceremonial duties, but he can also veto laws, and as commander in chief has influence on foreign military operations. Komorowski has pledged to work closely with the government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk to adopt the euro in about five years, end the military mission in Afghanistan in 2012, promote pro-market reforms and keep the Catholic church separate from the state.

KABUL (AFP) – US General David Petraeus was Sunday to formally take up his new role of commander of the Afghan war in a ceremony at NATO’s headquarters in the capital Kabul. The ceremony will mark his assumption of command over the 140,000 US and NATO troops in Afghanistan fighting the Talibanled insurgency. All 47 nations that make up NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were due to be represented at the gathering, to be presided over by General Egon Ramms, Commander Joint Forces Command. Petraeus arrived in Kabul on Friday to take over from US General Stanley McChrystal, sacked last month by President Barack Obama for insubordination.
In a Saturday meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Petraeus emphasised the slogans for his mission would be “unity, transparency and accountability”, the president’s press office said. The pair spoke about corruption concerns after billions of dollars in US aid was blocked last week in the wake of a newspaper report that cash for Afghanistan was being siphoned and shipped out of Kabul on commercial flights. Karzai rejected the graft allegations as “baseless”, his office said, yet added both he Petraeus agreed “anti-corruption was the main part of the war against terrorism and emphasised cooperation to reduce it”. SYDNEY (AFP) – Australia’s new Prime Minister Julia Gillard Sunday vowed not to let “political correctness” get in the way of tackling immigration, signalling a tough line on the issue. Gillard, who ruthlessly deposed former leader Kevin Rudd and solved the mining tax row that weakened him a week later, said people should not be called racist for raising concerns about asylum seekers. “I certainly dismiss labels like intolerant or racist because people raise concerns about border security, but we’ve also got to be very alive to the complexity of this and that there’s no quick fix,” Gillard told the Sunday Telegraph. “There’s a temptation for people to use these labels and names to try and close down debate and I’m very opposed to that. People need to be able to have honest discussions. “So any sort of political correctness, or niceties that get in the way, I think, need to be swept out of the way.” The Welsh-born Gillard, whose parents emigrated to Australia in 1966, has made it a top priority to slow the steady flow of asylum seeker boats that plagued the Rudd government.
She also defended former conservative leader John Howard, whose tough immigration policies were scrapped by Rudd, after he was dubbed a “closet racist” in Indian media over his failed bid to lead world cricket’s governing body. “The suggestion John Howard should be labelled a racist, what a load of nonsense. So, when 14 busloads of villagers arrived on June 30 at the home of Henry Sutanto, who heads the Christian-run Mahanaim Founda-
tion, rumors quickly spread that he and Andreas Sanau, the condemned man whose face appeared on the mosque banner, were planning a mass baptism. A spokeswoman for the group, Marya Irawan, insisted the crowds were invited as part of efforts to reach out to the poor. The FPI was not convinced. Video footage provided by the hard-line group shows hundreds of people getting off buses and entering the residential complex, many of them women in headscarves holding babies in slings, and milling about the pool. When a questioner thrust the camera in their faces, demanding to know why they came, most just looked bewildered. “Someone asked if I wanted to come,” one woman said with a shrug. Others accepted a ride into the city because they were bored, and thought they would at least get a free lunch out of it.

CEBU, Philippines – Fifteen people were killed after the brakes on a speeding bus packed with passengers failed and the vehicle slammed into a concrete barrier in the central Philippines. Another 48 people were injured, police said Sunday. The bus carrying mostly homebound factory workers was traveling at high speed Saturday in Cebu province when it lost its brakes while maneuvering a downhill curve. The driver crashed the vehicle into the cement barrier to avoid hitting a throng of pedestrians, police official Erson Digal said. Most victims were killed inside the
bus but five others died after being thrown from the vehicle on impact. The dead included a mother and son who died in an embrace, Digal said. “It happened so fast. Residents heard the crash then the yells of so many people calling for help,” Digal told The Associated Press by telephone. The injured bus driver was taken into police custody for questioning after re-
ceiving treatment. Saturday’s crash in Toledo city was the second deadly bus accident in recent weeks in the area. A bus rented by Iranian medical students plunged into a ravine off a mountain road in Balamban town, near Toledo, killing 21 people last month. Cebu is about 350 miles (560 kilometers) southeast of the capital Manila.

BAGHDAD – Vice President Joe Biden is meeting with senior Iraqi officials in hopes of ending the country’s postelection turmoil that threatens to leave it without a new government in place as American troops head home. Biden is expected to meet on Sunday with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his main rival for the prime minister’s job, Ayad Allawi. Iraqi politicians have been bickering over who will get the chance to lead the country ever since the inconclusive March 7 parliamentary elections. No political alliance won a clear majority in the vote. Biden will also meet with U.S. troops in a ceremony during which a number of soldiers who have been serving with the U.S. military will be sworn in as American citizens.

JAKARTA - The only glacier in the western Pacific could disappear in less than five years, taking with it vital clues about the earth’s changing climate, a US scientist said Friday. Ohio State University Professor Lonnie Thompson has just completed what he calls a “salvage mission” to extract ice cores from the glacier on Punjak Jaya, which soars above the tropical, reef-fringed waters of eastern Indonesia. The ice core samples he collected after his 13-day trip to the Papuan central highlands are set to be shipped back to Chicago on Wednesday for further analysis. But Thompson said one thing is clear: the glacier is dying. “This is the only ice in the western end of the Pacific warm pool, which is the warmest water on earth. When it melts that history (from ice cores) is lost forever and there’s no
way we can recapture it,” he told AFP. “My biggest concern is that we may be too late to capture that history. Some is already missing from the top and from the bottom. How much of that history do we still have?” Thompson estimated the glacier is disappearing at a rate of seven metres (22 feet) a year. As it is only about 32 metres deep, it could be gone in four or five years. “Looking at the loss of ice that’s been occurring since the 1830s we thought that we were looking at decades (before the Punjak Jaya ice disappeared),” he said. “But I’ve never been to a glacier anywhere else in the world where it rains every day... If it rains on a glacier then that’s the death of the glacier.” One of the world’s leading experts, Thompson has visited glaciers from Kenya to Peru. But he said he had never seen anything like what he experienced in Papua, where the ice was
visibly melting under his tent. “It’s the first glacier that I’ve visited where you can hear the water flowing underneath the ice,” he said. The 88 metres of ice samples from his expedition will be added to the Ohio State University’s valuable archive of tropical ice cores, where it will remain available for researchers years after the glacier itself may have gone. The study of glacier ice reveals evidence of past climate fluctuations, which can then be referenced with samples from other parts of the planet to get a better understanding of current climate change. “We hope to be able to reconstruct past temperatures, look at the history of the ice here and compare that with ice from around the world, particularly with ice from the other side of the Pacific Ocean,” Thompson said. He said he hoped to publish his findings early next year.

PANDEGLANG - A Java rhinoceros conservation center is being set up at Gunung Honje in the Ujung Kulon National Park (TNUK), Banten, at a cost of Rp6 billion to be provided by two non-governmental orgnizations, the park’s manager said. “All the costs to build the center will be borne by the International Rhinoceros Foundation (IRF) and the Indonesian Rhinoceros Foundation (YABI),” TNUK chief Agus Priambudi said here Saturday. If everything went well, the center and its 4.000-hectare conservation area would be ready in 2010 when people would also be able to visit the facility to observe the Java Rhinoceros in its natural habitat, he said. At present there were about 50 one-horn rhinos in the park but they did not breed easily and most of them were male. So far, the park management had not encountered any illegal rhino hunting case while
all rhinos found dead over the years had died of natural causes or disease, he said. The big animals that can reach the age of 40 years old can only be found in Ujung Kulon although 10 of the same species, mostly female, are reported to be also living in Vietnam. The park management was often counting the existing rhino population in cooperation with such organizations as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Worldwide Fund for Nature. A total of 30 surveillance cameras had been installed at many points across the animals’ habitat to observe their condition and movements. The head of agricultural quarantine at the ministry of agriculture, Hari Priyono, said in Karawang, West Java, on Saturday the Indonesian government had for the past two years been fighting for the opening of the Australian market for the country’s agricultural products such as mangosteen and mango but to no avial. The Australian side had replied they were keeping their market closed because they still could not
be sure about the sanitary conditions of Indonesian agricultural products as they had discovered many plant disrupting organisms in them. He said “ Autralia has so far even made Indonesia as the main market for its agricultural products such as cows and milk.” The minister said it would be appropriate for Australia to be fair with products from Indonesia by not obstructing their entry into its market. Denpasar – The head of Bali Transportation, Communication, and Information Department, I Made Santha, said that the government will employee 18 buses for the Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, and Tabanan route or usually called Sarbagita. “The government already prepared the buses and it will effectively start in November 2010,” he added. The capacity of each bus is 40 people and the study showed that big vehicle is more suitable for the transport condition in Bali. Santha explained that for the early phase, the buses will concentrate in handling the transport for Nusa Dua area. This is because Nusa Dua is one of the main tourism are in Denpasar so there is great hope that the existence of the bus will help in developing tourism. WASHINGTON - The US unemployment rate fell to 9.5 percent last month as more than half a million people abandoned the job hunt, fueling doubts about the economic recovery. The Labor Department reported on Friday a net loss of 125,000 jobs last month even as unemployment fell to its lowest rate in almost a year. The falling jobless rate — down from 9.7 percent in May — offered some succor to President Barack Obama, who is running out of time to put the economy firmly back on track before congressional elections in November. “Make no mistake, we are headed in the right direction but... we are not headed there fast enough for a lot of Americans. We are not headed there fast enough for me either,” Obama said. The White House has warned that unemployment will remain high for the rest of the year, while polls show it is a crucial issue with voters. Most analysts had expected the ranks of jobless Americans to swell well beyond 15 million in June, pushing the unemployment rate up to 9.8 percent. In the end the number of unemployed fell to 14.6 million in June as 652,000 Americans left the job market and more than 20,000 took up temporary posts. “The unemployment rate dropped because the labor force shrank even more rapidly as discouraged workers stopped looking for work,” said analysts at Societe Generale. The report was akin to a Rorschach test for Wall Street, with some seeing the evidence of a slow recovery and others an ominous sign of problems ahead. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 46 points, or around half a percentage point, after the news. The biggest cause for concern had been the weakness of the private sector, which created a modest 83,000 jobs in June, well up from May’s revised total of 33,000. Faced with an uncertain outlook and poor access to credit, US firms have been reluctant to
rehire workers. The June figures also showed the evaporation of hiring for the 2010 Census, which had accounted for around 95 percent of new jobs in May. Census hiring fell back by 225,000. Obama’s Republican foes said the report was further evidence of a stalled recovery. “Today’s report reinforces that the vast majority of new jobs added to the economy over the last several months have been temporary or government jobs,” said Congressman Eric Cantor. But not everyone was so gloomy. “Despite the slightly larger drop in payroll numbers, there were some positive signs in this report,” said Jason Schenker of Prestige Economics. “A recovery is clearly underway, although it will be a slow one for the job market,” he added. Either way the report looked unlikely to turn the page on a tortuous few months for the top 30 US companies, which lost more than 10 percent of their collective value last quarter. The continued weakness of the private sector has sparked calls for Obama to provide more government spending to restart the recovery. “The private sector is not yet poised to take over and sustain a robust recovery,” said Heidi Shierholz of the Economic Policy Institute, a Washingtonbased think tank. But proponents of such a plan admit it will be nearly impossible as Washington zeroes in on elections in which government spending is likely to feature prominently. Congress is currently locked in a bitter debate over extending unemployment insurance for over one million workers and is likely to balk at a wider spending package. “This is one of those cases where the political realities are completely at odds with economic sense,” she said, advocating fresh stimulus of around 400 billion dollars. “I don’t know what is going on in the heads of these people, the economic case is so cut and dry, it is so clear what needs to be done.”

WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund released a loan installment of 913.2 million euros (1.1 billion dollars) to Romania on Friday, signaling approval of the government’s deficit-reduction measures. The IMF executive board approved the “immediate” disbursement of the loan after a review of Romania’s performance under a program supported by a 24-month Stand-By Arrangement, the institution said in a statement. The latest installment had been held up after Romania’s Constitutional Court ruled unconstitutional on June 25 the government’s plan to cut pensions by 15 percent in 2010 as part of austerity measures. in an austerity package of the center-right government of Prime Minister Emil Boc as the economy, hit hard by the global economic crisis, struggles to exit a steep recession. The next day the government said it would raise the VAT tax levied on goods and services to 24 percent from 19 percent to curb the public deficit and obtain the crucial IMF loan disbursement. The VAT hike took effect on Thursday. The Stand-By Arrangement that was approved in May 2009 was for approximately 13.6 billion euros (17.1 billion dollars). WASHINGTON – Could a blind person drive a car? Researchers are trying to make that far-fetched notion a reality. The National Federation of the Blind and Virginia Tech plan to demonstrate a prototype vehicle next year equipped with technology that helps a blind person drive a car independently. The technology, called “nonvisual interfaces,” uses sensors to let a blind driver maneuver a car based on information transmitted to him about his surroundings: whether another car or object is nearby, in front of him or in a neighboring lane. Advocates for the blind consider it a “moon shot,” a goal similar to President John F. Kennedy’s pledge to land a man on the moon. For many blind people, driving a car long has been considered impossible. But researchers hope the project could revolutionize mobility and challenge long-held assumptions about limitations. “We’re exploring areas that have previously been regarded as unexplorable,” said Dr. Marc Maurer, president of the National Federation of the Blind. “We’re moving away from the theory that blindness ends the capacity of human beings to make contributions to society.” The Baltimore-based organization announced its plans for the vehicle demonstration at a news conference Friday in Daytona Beach, Fla.
A blind person, who has not yet been chosen, will drive the vehicle on a course near the famed Daytona race track and attempt to simulate a typical driving experience. Maurer first talked about building an automobile that the blind could drive about a decade ago when he launched the organization’s research institute. “Some people thought I was crazy and they thought, ‘Why do you want us to raise money for something that can’t be done?’ Others thought it was a great idea,” Maurer said. “Some people were incredulous. Others thought the idea was incredible.” The vehicle has its roots in Virginia Tech’s 2007 entry into the DARPA Grand Challenge, a competition for driverless vehicles funded by the Defense Department’s research arm. The university’s team won third place for a self-driving vehicle that used sensors to perceive traffic, avoid crashing into other cars and objects and run like any other vehicle. LONDON – Scientists have discovered an ancient whale whose bite ripped huge chunks of flesh out of other whales about 12 million years ago — and they’ve named it after the author of “Moby-Dick.” The prehistoric sperm whale grew to between 13 and 18 meters (up to 60 feet) long, not unusual by today’s standards. But unlike modern sperm whales, Leviathan melvillei, named for Herman Melville, sported vicious, tusk-like teeth some 36 centimeters (14 inches) long. The ancient beast evidently dined on other whales, researchers said in Thursday’s issue of the journal Nature. They report finding a skull of the beast in a Peruvian desert. The researchers named it in tribute to the 19th-century author and his classic tale of the great white whale, which includes frequent digressions on natural history that punctuate the action. “There is a chapter about fossils,” one of the paper’s authors, Olivier Lambert of the Natural History Museum in Paris, said. “Melville even mentions some of the fossils that I studied for my PhD thesis.” Anthony Friscia, a paleontologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who wasn’t involved in the discovery, said scattered finds of huge fossilized teeth had long hinted at the ancient whale’s existence. JOHANNESBURG – David Villa scored the only goal as European champions Spain beat Paraguay 1-0 at Ellis Park on Saturday to set up a World Cup semi-final against Germany. Villa, who now has five goals in the tournament, struck the winner seven minutes from the end of what had been a disjointed quarter-final performance from the fancied Spaniards in a game that saw both goalkeepers save second-half penalties. Germany, who lost to Spain in the Euro 2008 final, had earlier thumped Argentina 4-0 in Cape Town. “We didn’t play well mainly because we didn’t get enough of the ball,” said Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque. “We are now amongst the four best teams in the world. Our next opponents are Germany who are the best team at the moment.” Spain’s Cesc Fabregas, who came on for the out-of-form Fernando Torres in the second half, admitted the semi-final will require a step-up in class. “It feels good to be in the semifinals, but we know it’ll mean nothing if we don’t reach the final,” he said. “We watched Germany beat Argentina and they played very well. They are one of the best teams in this tournament. We will have to play our very best to be able to beat them.” Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino said his side paid the price for not taking the opportunities which came their way. “We had chances but didn’t take them. But never mind. I congratulate my players for their progress at the World Cup,” he said. Paraguay made a good start to the match and
created two chances in the first 10 minutes. Jonathan Santana shot too close to goalkeeper Iker Casillas from 20 yards and then Cristian Riveros failed to hit the target with a header from Victor Caceres’s pinpoint cross. Spain were out of sorts with even Barcelona playmaker Xavi uncharacteristically wasteful with his passing. However, he finally brought a spark to the European champions’ play when he hit a dipping volley from 25 yards just over the bar. Four minutes from the break Paraguay had the ball in the net as Nelson Valdez latched onto a long ball and slotted home into the bottom corner but his strike was ruled out for offside. Liverpool forward Torres remained an isolated figure up front and it was not surprising that Spain coach Vicente del Bosque replaced him with Fabregas. The game burst into life around the hour mark. Paraguay had a golden opportunity to take the lead on 59 minutes when Gerard Pique was penalised for hauling down Oscar Cardozo in the box. But Cardozo missed the resulting penalty with Spain captain Casillas guessing the right way to make the save.
Spain then went straight up the other end and Antolin Alcaraz was judged to have tripped new Barcelona signing Villa in the area. Xabi Alonso stepped up to bury the penalty but was ordered to retake it as Spanish players had encroached. Second time around he changed sides but Justo Villar then guessed right and saved before Sergio Ramos’s follow up was blocked on the line. Spain, though, felt they should have had another penalty immediately as Fabregas tumbled under Villar’s dive. Villar then parried a curling effort from Andres Iniesta before del Bosque threw on a forward Pedro for defensive midfielder Alonso as he went searching for the win. Spain finally got the breakthrough on 83 minutes after a typically swift passing move through the heart of Paraguay’s defence. Iniesta laid the ball to Pedro on the right and although his shot came back off the far post, it fell kindly to Villa whose own curled effort nestled in the net after coming off the woodwork. In a frantic finale Casillas dived at the feet of Roque Santa Cruz to prevent an equaliser while Villar then stopped Villa from making the game safe.
CAPE TOWN – Germany will need to replace suspended four-time goal scorer Thomas Mueller when they take on Spain in their World Cup semi-final on Wednesday but that will be no problem for coach Joachim Loew. The 20-year-old winger has wreaked havoc in his first major tournament, scoring his fourth goal in Germany’s 4-0 demolition of Argentina on Saturday to advance to the last four but coach Joachim Loew knows no one in his young squad is irreplaceable. “Obviously this will be a blow for us given the goal threat that Thomas has been here,” said the 50-year-old coach, after his player was booked for a handball and must now sit out their match against the European champions. “But we have players who can replace Thomas and we will manage that,” he said. Mueller, who only won his first international cap in March in a friendly against Argentina and was one of Loew’s last call-ups for Germany’s youngest World Cup squad since 1934, has been crucial to their fast-paced style of attacking football. WIMBLEDON, England – Getting set to accept her latest Wimbledon trophy, Serena Williams lifted both arms and held aloft 10 fingers. Then, raising only her right hand, she wiggled three more fingers, bringing the total count to 13. That’s how many Grand Slam singles titles Williams owns as of Saturday. “I thought, ‘I hope I got the number right,’” she said. “You know me: I tend to forget.” That’s OK, Serena. The way you’re accumulating championships, it’s tough to keep track. With a superb serve that had other greats of the game gushing, and plenty of offense and defense to back it up, the No. 1-ranked Williams overwhelmed No. 21 Vera Zvonareva of Russia 6-3, 6-2 in Saturday’s final to win her fourth Wimbledon title and, yes, 13th major tournament overall. That’s the most among active women and gives Williams sole possession of sixth place on the alltime list, breaking a tie with her former U.S. Fed Cup captain, Billie Jean King. Addressing King, who was in the front row of the Royal Box, Williams said: “Hey, Billie, I got you! This is No. 13 for me now. It’s just amazing to able to be among such great people.” The American did not drop a set over two dominant weeks at the All En-
gland Club. She’s won five of the last eight Grand Slam tournaments, including two in a row at Wimbledon, where she also was champion in 2002-03. Mark Cuban have agreed “to get it done.” Teams and free agents can strike deals at any time, but can’t sign them until Thursday. According to a person familiar with negotiations, the deal is for more than $80 million over four years, with a no-trade clause. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the NBA’s moratorium until Thursday. Team officials couldn’t comment because of that same rule. “I think it’s a great deal,” Geschwindner said. “We’re pumped.” The deal was first reported by ESPN. The 2007 NBA MVP has spent his entire 12-year career in Dallas. He is the franchise’s career scoring and rebounding leader and has led the Mavs to 10 straight 50-win seasons. But they haven’t won a championship. And they’ve won only a single playoff series since blowing a 2-0 lead in the 2006 NBA finals. At 32, Nowitzki feels he can remain at an elite level for several more years, and Cuban certainly agrees. He’s put together a roster in win-now mode, and will look to make some major upgrades this summer. Nowitzki and Kidd could serve as great recruiters. Although Dallas lacks the salary cap room to sign the big names, the club has all sorts of desirable pieces piled up to make sign-andtrade deals. Nowitzki helped free up some money by not pushing for his maximum deal, which would’ve been $96 million. Nowitzki opted out of the final year of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent for the first time. He didn’t talk seriously with any other teams, but there was a bit of drama to what might’ve seemed like a slam-dunk return.

Seven-time champion Lance Armstrong is the topplaced rider among expected title contenders in the 196man peloton now zooming along the 138-mile ride from Rotterdam to Brussels, Belgium. The race Sunday is expected to favor sprinters or breakaway riders. Cancellara won the prologue time trial Saturday, with Armstrong 22 seconds behind in fourth place and 2009 winner Alberto Contador in sixth, 27 seconds back. Manuel Cardoso of Portugal and Swiss rider Mathias Frank didn’t start after being injured in crashes a day earlier on the rainsoaked streets of Rotterdam. The three-week Tour ends July 25 in Paris.

Takahashi wins after Catalunya drama
YUKI Takahashi has given Tech 3 its first ever Moto2 victory after a dramatic seventh round at Catalunya, which began with a nine-rider pile-up at turn one and ended with a huge crash for Carmelo Morales. The turn one accident, triggered by Alex Debon missing his braking point and spearing into the side of Mike di Meglio at the apex, resulted in yellow flags being waved for several laps - which proved to be pole sitter Andrea Iannone’s downfall. The Italian, seeking his third victory of the season, overtook Takahashi heading into the braking zone at the start of lap two, and was issued with a penalty on lap 7, by which time he held a 1.3sec lead. But the penalty was a ‘go back one position’ verdict, which proved impossible to communicate to Iannone - his Fimmco Speedup team even trying to write it on the pit board with pen and paper! Iannone didn’t understand the message and kept riding - resulting in a ride-through penalty being issued on lap 14 of 23. The Italian

Marquez home win a ‘four-gone’ conclusion MARC Marquez took his fourth successive 125cc grand prix victory - and the world championship lead - in dominant style, in front of his home Spanish fans at Catalunya on Sunday. The Red Bull Ajo Derbi rider, unbeaten since his first ever grand prix victory at Mugello, led comfortably from start to finish, taking the chequered flag with a 4.638sec advantage over nearest rival Bradley Smith. Marquez is now the youngest ever rider to claim four successive grand prix wins, taking the record from a certain Valentino Rossi. The 17-year-old, who has been moving steadily up the championship order since crashing at round two at Jerez, now leads the 125cc championship by one point from countryman Pol Espargaro. The fight for second place went down to the line with Nico Terol, Espargaro and Smith locked in battle for the entire race. The final lap saw Spaniards Terol and Espargaro both pass Smith into turn one, with Espargaro then moving into second. Smith muscled back past his Aspar Aprilia team-mate Terol and the trio fanned out across the track heading into the left hander at the end of the back straight, where Smith regained the runner-up spot. But Terol, who began the race with a three point title lead over Espargaro, came close to hitting the back of Smith under braking, then highsided out as he applied the power. Terol leaves Catalunya third in the championship, 14 points from Marquez, with Smith 38 points from the top in fourth.

understood that decision and rejoined the field outside of the points (eventually riding to 13th) while Takahashi was handed a three-second lead over Thomas Luthi and Julian Simon. Part-time 2009 MotoGP rider Takahashi - who has qualified on the Moto2 front row three times this season, but was without a podium finish - then extended his advantage to hand Herve Poncharal’s team a landmark victory by just over five seconds. Takahashi is the fifth different winner from the seven races, while Tech 3 is the fourth different manufacturer to claim a race win after Suter, Moriwaki and FTR. The victory was the first for Tech 3 since 2000, in the 250cc class. Joining Takahashi on the podium were Interwetten Moriwaki rider Luthi - riding just one week after collarbone surgery - who just held off the Aspar Suter of Simon. Karel Abraham, title leader Toni Elias and Simone Corsi claimed fourth, fifth and sixth. With Shoya Tomizawa one of the innocent turn one victims, Elias now leads the championship by 17 points from Luthi.
