For the umpteenth time, the officer of Bali Police could capture a fugitive of Interpol. It was the turn of Peter Ulrich from Germany captured by airport police (KP3) of Ngurah Rai Airport, last Saturday (Oct 31) night. The man entering the 71st year of old this year was alleged to murder his wife. However, after the murder, the suspect escaped and seemingly chose Bali as his hideaway.

JAYAPURA - A police aircraft carrying four crew went missing in a mountainous area of Indonesia’s eastern Papua province on Monday, officials said. The Polish-built M-28 Skytruck was flying from the provincial capital Jayapura to Mulia town in Puncak Jaya district when it lost contact with air traffic control, aviation official Sukarjo said. “The plane left Sentani airport at 10:48 am (0148 GMT) and lost contact at noon,” he told AFP, adding that the flight should have lasted one hour. The twin-engine plane was on a regular supply flight when it disappeared in Papua’s heavily forested central highlands. Archipelagic Indonesia relies heavily on air transport but has one of Asia’s worst air safety records.

Head of Bugbug Customary Village, Karangasem controlling the territory of Gumang Hill, I Wayan Mas Suyasa, last Sunday (Nov 1) admitted that the land where Villa Candidasa established was the property of local village. A Dutch investor contracted such 0.6 hectare of land. Meanwhile, the contract fee was used for renovating three village temples, inauguration rite, mendem pedagingan and ngusaba kaja ritual last year. Mas Suyasa said that such decision and contract agreement of the land were initiated in the previous meeting of village apparatus engaging all nayaka. He said that such decision did not violate customary regulations and convention because location of villa belonging to investor from the Netherlands, Hans van Hammert, was away from Gumang Temple. In addition, Mas Suyasa said that location of villa contracted for 30 years located at southwest of hill where on its peak indeed lay the Gumang Temple. “Its location is far from temple and the territory has included in Nyuh Awis at the northwest foot of Gumang Hill,” said Mas Suyasa who is also former Deputy Head of Karangasem House. Since the contract fee was required to finance ceremonies, village apparatus gave recommendation to investor to submit a building permit to Karangasem Regent through the Head of Public Works Services. “Because we know the hill area functions as reserve, we issued a recommendation so intermediary of investor could pro-
pose the building permit (IMB),” he said. Intermediary of investor who is also a resident of Samuh, Bugbug, I Wayan Gunarsa, rejected if the building was villa. According to him, it was only residential house belonging to foreigner. When asked if other location on the hill would be contracted if there would be any investor wish to. He confessed to have not known yet. “At the moment, we do not talk about that matter. However, it would depend on the necessity of our village later. I will only work when one give me a job or ask to find out a land,” he said. Both Mas Suyasa and Gunarsa rejected to mention the number of contract value of the land. “Its contract agreement is stored at the village,” said Mas Suyasa. As has been published previously, the investor from the Netherlands, Hans van Hammert, has had building permit No. 90/ 2008 dated September 15, 2008 under the name of submitter I Wayan Gunarsa. Criminologist supports establishment of national anti-terrorism body Antara
DENPASAR - A noted criminologist from state University of Indonesia expressed support here on Saturday for the government’s plan to form a national anti-terrorism body to synergize terrorism handling in Indonesia. “This is big progress. However, it is still being considered whether it will be formed into a committee or a division at a preventive level. So far the concept of strategy is still unclear,” Adrianus Meliala said while attending a workshop on terrorism prevention. Adrianus said the body would function more like an intelligence analyst specializing on terrorism. It also involves analysis, intelligence and combat but will not only be a special detachment but it also has a military unit with special characteristics, he said. “Like in the air force we have ‘Paskhas’ (special unit), in the navy, the marines unit, and in the army ‘Kopassus’. So it is hoped its movement will be more harmonious,” he said. He said it could also involve units such as units of biology, chemistry, database and forensic. “With the presence of the institution it is hoped there will be a synergy. So far they operate by themselves,” he said.
He said the role of anti-terror Densus 88 unit was not belittled but the unit would be part of its combat group. Its role is not reduced but along with the army it would carry out combat operations based upon their expertise. Adrianus admitted that most of the anti-terror role had been played by Densus 88 from the police. He said if the anti-terror body would finally be established it was suggested that three divisions would be set up in it namely combat, intelligence and support divisions in addition to, if deemed necessary, a deradicalization division. Adrianus said that it was all still under discussion and there was no need to hurry for it. “If it is being rushed it is feared it have political consequences. Besides cost, also needs to be put into consideration. If the concept is really mature only then will we urge for its development,” he said. Adrianus said he agreed with the idea because terrorism handling so far had been carried out without concept and upon irregular basis. Even a lot of work has been saddled on Densus 88 starting from detection, investigation to an ambush. “Even after the actors are caught Densus still has to take care of their families,” he said.

Ola Molin (41), a man from Sweden staying at Melati Hotel, Kuta, Saturday (Oct 31) at 4 p.m. died when he was swimming at the beach in front of the hotel where he stayed. His corpse was taken to Sanglah Hospital. According to the officer of Waters Police accompanying the corpse to hospital, temporary allegation causing the death of Ola Molin was hauled by waves. The beach at the area was indeed known to have strong streams and local officer has often warned visitors swimming around the area to be more careful. Based on the data, since last October, at least, there were eight foreign tourists dying when enjoying their holiday in Bali. Out of that number, three died due to sink when they were swimming. Uptight ambience once enveloped the Blue Eyes Discotheque on Jalan Bypass N g u r a h R a i , S a n u r, S o u t h Denpasar, last Friday (Oct 30) night. In the midst of boisterous music strings was heard a shoot in one of the bathrooms. Such voice was alleged to source from the explosion of firearm brought by one of the personnel of Bali Police. According to information, the officer releasing the shot belonged to criminal researcher unit (Buser). However, identity of such police officer was made secret. “Obviously, the personnel is now under interrogation of professional security division of Bali Police,” revealed a source person. Visitors knowing the incident thronged to go out of the discotheque. Situation at location once turned uptight.
Seemingly, officer of professional security division heard the incident so that they visited the location right away. Even, Chief of Bali Police, Sutisna, also knew about that incident and it made him angry. Spokesperson of Bali Police, I Gde Sugianyar, when asked about his confirmation, Sunday (Nov 1) justified the incident. He said that such shooting action has been investigated and perpetrator has been interrogated at the room of investigator of professional security division of Bali Police. “Such shooting has been followed up by security division. Meanwhile, perpetrator itself has also been probed,” he explained. It was unknown for sure about the motive of shooting making visitors of discotheque shocked. An issue told that such officer was in drunken condition when interrogating a person in

Since nothing was found, strongly alleged that police officer got angry and took his pistol to be shot. The shoot was not targeted to that suspected person, but to the wall of bathroom. MOSCOW - David Miliband, on the first visit by a British foreign secretary to Russia for five years, sought Monday to warm relations that had plunged back to a Cold War chill by a series of bitter rows. Miliband said London and Moscow should work together on shared “challenges”, at a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. “We both know that there are big challenges that our countries face. PARIS - Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, newly released diplomatic files reveal the extent to which Germany’s supposed friends in London and Paris were fearful of the country’s reunification. France’s then president Francois Mitterrand and Britain’s prime minister Margaret Thatcher were both caught out by the speed with which the Germans remade their country in the wake of Communism’s collapse. While Thatcher’s supporters would go on to portray her as the heroine of the West’s victory in the Cold War, a victory symbolised by the Wall’s collapse, at the time the prospect of German reunification “horrified” her. And, while Mitterrand has been seen as a great friend and ally of Germany’s then chancellor Helmut Kohl in the campaign for European
integration, in 1989 he neither foresaw nor supported the re-integration of Germany. “In 1989 we gave the impression of wavering in the face of history. Twenty years on, let’s do it justice,” said Pierre Lellouche, French European affairs minister, as he followed Britain in opening the 198990 diplomatic archive. Given the subsequent success of the reunification project, and the warm ties that Paris in particular now has with Berlin, the files will make uncomfortable reading for some French and British political veterans. “France and Great Britain should pull together today in the face of the German threat,” Thatcher told the French ambassador to London in March 1990, according to a French diplomatic telegram released for the anniversary. “Kohl is capable of anything. SYDNEY - About 15 people were feared dead on Monday after a boat carrying 39 sank in rough seas far off northwest Australia despite frantic rescue attempts by a passing merchant ship and fishing vessel. Defence chief Angus Houston said the unidentified boat capsized and then sank after the LNG Pioneer ship and Taiwanese fishing craft responded to pleas for help in a remote area off Australia’s Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean. It was not confirmed whether the boat was one of dozens of peoplesmuggling vessels that have headed to Australia this year carrying more than 1,700 asylum-seekers, many of them from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. “I understand when the first ship got there, this vessel was still intact,” Houston said. “Somehow or other during the process of interaction between the ship and trawler and also the stricken vessel, there’s been a capsize and people ended up in the water.” Some 19 people were rescued by the Bahamas-based gas tanker and

KUALA LUMPUR - A Japanese woman faces the death penalty in Malaysia after being arrested on suspicion of trafficking 4.7 kilograms (10 pounds) of methamphetamines, state media said Monday. Azizah Ibrahim, customs director at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, said the 30-year-old woman was detained last Friday for possession of “syabu” which is popular in the region.
Azizah said the drug, with a street value of 1.2 million ringgit (350,000 dollars), was found in a special compartment in her luggage after she arrived from Dubai, state news agency Bernama reported. The unnamed woman has been remanded for investigation under Malaysia’s tough anti-narcotics law, which stipulates a mandatory death sentence upon conviction. The death penalty is carried out by hanging in Malaysia.

President to form team to probe into Bibit-Chandra case Antara

Before the press conference was held all the team members were present, except Komarudin Hidayat, were received by the president for about ten minutes. “The president said that the present development of the case was not good for the nation’s life because of mistrust and distrust towards not only our law but also to the credibility of police, prosecutors and the KPK itself,” Djoko Suyanto said.

AYAPURA - Many progressive Austronesian cultures are to be found in several coastal areas in Papua, a researcher of the Jayapura Archaeology Center, Hari Suroto, said here Sunday. Suroto said geographically, Papua is the westernmost part of the Pacific connecting Southeast Asia with the Pacific. “The location is strategic for transitory migration from the west to the east,” he said. He said various archaeological ob-
jects and artifacts found in Papua’s coastal areas showed the existence of Austronesian cultures in Indonesia’s easternmost province. Austronesian cultures were known and spread out by people who spoke Austronesian languages between Madagascar in the west and Easter Island (in the Pacific) in the east as well as Formosa in the north. The evidence of these cultures found in Papua was the Melanesian language spoken by some people as a result of the influence of the Austronesian languages.
“This can be seen in the grammar and vocabularies,” Suroto said. According to the archaeological research, the Papuan areas where the Melanesian language is spoken are Yapen Island, Raja Ampat District, Biak, Waropen, Teluk Wandamen and an area along Teluk Cenderawasih Beach. Government begins reconstruction program in West Sumatra Antara
JAKARTA - The government on Sunday kicked off a reconstruction program in quake-affected West Sumatra province, Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Syamsul Maarif said. “Today we started the reconstruction process but not with direct reconstruction activities because the verification (of damaged buildings) has not been completed,” he said. Neither had reconstruction funds from the government been disbursed, he said.

SINGARAJA — Fungi and carrion beetles have attacked the banana trees in Buleleng since few years ago. However, up to this moment it could not be resolved completely. As a result, since the beginning of last October, it was estimated that thousands of banana trees perished, while farmers could do nothing. A farmer at Tejakula, explained that during this transitional season the carrion beetles set to attack nearly all kinds of plants in Eastern Buleleng, including attacking banana trees. Based on simple calculation, 30 clusters of banana trees were damaged due to the attack of carrion. Estimated, teens of others would face the same condition if carrion beetles would not be eradicated. To this extent, farmers at Tejakula eradicated the carrion by means of simple method, namely by lighting kerosene pressure lantern and a basin containing water was put under the lantern. Carrions visiting the lantern light would be heated and fell down into the basin. “Another problem arising today is the too expensive price of kerosene used to light the lantern,” said a farmer. Other than carrion beetles, fungi and bacteria also attacked banana trees in Buleleng. Banana trees attacked by fusarium fungi mostly located at Tejakula, Gerokgak and Banjar subdistrict. Meanwhile, banana trees at-
tacked by pseudomonas bacteria were located at Sukasada, Buleleng, Banjar and Seririt subdistrict. Bananas attacked by fusarium was characterized by leaves turning yellow and wilted, while the attacked by pseudomonas were indicated by decayed trunk and fruit. Based on the data obtained from Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Services (Distanak) of Buleleng, at the beginning of October 2009 was just registered 1,068 clusters of banana trees turned damaged due to the attack of carrion beetles, fungi and bacteria. It was noted that the most serious damage ensued at Banjar subdistrict. At least, 218 clusters of banana trees at the area were attacked by pseudomonas and 25 others attacked by fungi. Section Head of Horticultural Protection, Distanak Buleleng, Ketut Santiana, justified that more than one thousand clusters of banana trees in Buleleng underwent damage due to the attack of fungi, bacteria and carrion. He admitted that the attack actually has
happened since 1985; however, it could not be eradicated totally. “The attack of fungi, bacteria and carrion beetles usually ensue during transitional season like this October,” he said. According to Santiana, the obstacle encountered in eradicating bacteria and fungi attacking banana trees, one of them, was that banana has not been seriously cultivated in Buleleng. Usually, banana was planted in the midst of other plants as intercrops and then they were disregarded without good maintenance. If fungi or bacteria have attacked the plant, said Santiana, farmers should dismantle the entire cluster of banana until its root. The soil ex diseased banana was left to have a hole and then it was planted again with the new ones few days later. At least, farmers only disposed the damaged trunk of banana, while its shoots were left to grow. “Actually, the shoot has been infected by fungi so that it could be ensured that the trunk will be damaged when bearing fruit,” he said. DENPASAR - The Malaysian government has set up an investigation team to probe into the death of an Indonesian migrant worker, Muntik Bani (36), who died after being tortured by her employer. Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Da’i Bachtiar said here on Saturday that the death of Muntik quickly got strong reactions from three Malaysian ministers, namely the foreign minister, the home affairs minister and the manpower minister. “The home affairs minister immediately ordered the formation of an investigative team to probe into Muntik’s death,” the ambassador said on the sidelines of a workshop on the
prevention of terror acts within Bali’s tourism area. He said that the court had held its first hearing on the case and it would convene the second session on November 3, 2009. The ambassador said he hoped the employer of the ill-fated Indonesian migrant worker would get a heavy punishment that could serve as a lesson to all other Malaysian employers. “We hope Malaysian employers will not torture their domestic helpers,” he said. Some 18 monkey handlers have been recruited to prevent monkeys in the “Monkey Forest” in Ubud, Gianyar district, Bali, from interfering in the shooting of certain episodes of the “Eat, Pray, Love” film starring Julia Roberts. “We don’t have any confirmation about the schedule of the film shooting activity here but preparations have been made, such as assignment of security personnel and monkey handlers so that the shooting can be conducted safely,” Made Dana, a community figure of Padang Tegal village, Ubud, said. He said it had been agreed with the film producer that the Monkey Forest which is one of Ubud’s tourist attractions would not be closed during the film shootings. “But it all depends on further developments, If it is not possible to keep the forest open to the public, then perhaps there will be a temporary closure,” he said. To Organize Glass Painting Exhibition at Nagasepaha Up to this moment, the only community of glass painting remaining to exist is only at Nagasepaha Village, Buleleng. The village situated some 7 km east of Singaraja retains tens of active glass painters. They are often marginalized by the mainstream of current painting, and even they are tended to be positioned as the secondary artists. However, the glass painting introduced by Jro Dalang Diah remains to be on the move. It is indicated by some 50 glass painting are now exhibited at Bentara Budaya Bali. There are 12 painters engaged in this second exhibition. Two of them were new comers, but the style and genre on show are no less attractive than that of others belonging to their senior. Descriptive style of Nagasepaha glass painting generally maintains the language of ex-
pression that has become their dialect, including engendering new idiolect of new painters, too. Kadek Suradi, for instance, is a young painter often making experiment and visual exploration. He does not only implement conventional technique of glass painting, but also makes splashing and other effects. On the surface of glass, Suradi pampers his painting with visual effects. Mature exploration yields the works having various styles. Diversity in style then becomes his style. Different from Suradi, Ketut Samudrawan prefers to freeze the movement in many of his works. One of them is his painting entitled Hanuman War in Alengka. Interestingly, Hanuman is illustrated to ride a motorbike. This painting would like to tell story about Hanuman in Ramayana epic whose tail was burnt.

Preparation: Heat oil in heavy saucepan. Add shallots, garlic and chilies and sauté for 2 minutes over low heat. Mix in shrimp paste and sauté for another minute. Pour in coconut milk and bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Add cucumbers and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer until beans are cooked. Season to taste with salt and pepper. WASHINGTON - US companies, still reeling from a deep economic recession, are hoarding more cash than at any time in the past 40 years, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday. The newspaper said in its analysis of corporate filings that in the second quarter, the 500 largest non-financial US firms held about 994 billion dollars in cash and short-term investments, or 9.8 percent of their assets. The figure was up from 846 billion dollars, or 7.9 percent of assets, a year earlier, the report said. The trend appears to have continued in the third quarter, despite an improving economy, The Journal noted.
Of those 500 companies, 248 have reported third-quarter results. Their cash increased to 11.1 percent of assets, from 10.1 percent in the second quarter. Companies as diverse as Alcoa Inc., Google Inc., PepsiCo Inc. and Texas Instruments Inc. all reported big third-quarter increases in cash holdings, the paper noted. “Everyone is hoarding cash,” The Journal quotes Carsten Stendevad, head
of Citigroup Inc.’s financial-strategy group, as saying. Large cash balances are both a curse for the economy and a potential blessing, the paper said. Hoarding means companies are spending and investing less, damping economic growth. But that leaves them with more cash to deploy as the economy improves, giving them a freer hand to acquire and to restart hiring and capital spending.
WASHINGTON - CIT Group, one of the largest small-business lenders in the United States, filed for bankruptcy Sunday with its board approving a “prepackaged” restructuring plan to shed 10 billion dollars in debt. After being rescued from almost certain collapse in July following a US government rejection of a bailout plea, the company had struggled for months to stay afloat, receiving an emergency loan of 4.5 billion dollars as recently as October 28. But when a comprehensive debtexchange plan recently failed, the board of the company, which ran into financial problems after a home mortgage meltdown plunged the country into its worst crisis in decades, had begun reorganizing its capital structure ahead of a possible bankruptcy. “With the overwhelming support of its debt-holders, the board of directors voted to proceed with the prepackaged plan of reorganization for CIT Group Inc and a subsidiary that will restructure the company’s debt and streamline its capital structure,” the company said in a statement after the board met Sunday. “Under the plan, CIT expects to reduce total debt by approximately 10 billion dollars, significantly reduce its liquidity needs over the next three years, enhance its capital ratios and accelerate its return to profitability.” In the Chapter 11 filing with the US Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan, the 101-year-old company reported total assets of 71 billion dollars and liabilities of nearly 65 billion, making the bankruptcy the fifth largest in US history, behind Lehman Brothers, Washington Mutual,
WorldCom and General Motors. CIT Group chairman and chief executive Jeffrey Peek said the plan would allow its subsidiaries, including CIT Bank, to continue operations through the reorganization. “This market-based solution allows CIT to enter into the reorganization process well-prepared and positioned for a swift emergence,” Peek said in a statement. About 85 percent of CIT’s reported 30 billion dollars in bond debt participated in the voting, with 90 percent of them supporting the bankruptcy plan, the company said. The restructuring by CIT, which provides financing to nearly one million small businesses and middle market companies, is a test case of sorts for an industry whose very business depends on the trust and confidence of customers and creditors. In December, CIT Group received 2.3 billion dollars from the US Treasury as part of an emergency rescue package, but the taxpayer money is expected to be wiped out in the restructuring. The decision in July not to further bail out CIT came after the US government injected tens of billions of dollars into the banking system and outlined a policy of helping large firms as the financial system came under pressure following the crisis. A US administration official at the time said the decrease in the level of loans granted by CIT Group over the past year indicated that the firm was not too big to fail. Operating in more than 50 countries, CIT is a bank holding company that provides financial products and advisory services to small and middle market businesses.

SYDNEY - Australia sharply upgraded its growth and jobs forecasts on Monday after bouncing back from the downturn but warned it was still on course for a record budget deficit. Treasurer Wayne Swan said the economy was set to grow 1.5 percent in the current financial year, up from a 0.5 percent contraction forecast in the May budget, while unemployment would peak at a lower-than-expected 6.75 percent. The forecasts, unveiled in the government’s mid-year budget update, come a day before Australia is expected to raise interest rates for the second time in as many months following its world-
leading recovery. “What Australia has achieved is something special. We have avoided the destruction of our capital and our skills base that is usually accompanied by a sharp recession,” Swan told reporters. “That’s something that all Australians can be proud of because it’s something that we have done together.” However, the record budget deficit outlined in May looked set to widen slightly from 57.6 to 57.7 billion dollars (52.0 billion US), or 4.7 percent of GDP, while the economy will operate below capacity “for some time”, Swan said. “Notwithstanding the improvement in the economic outlook, the
economy is not yet growing at a rate sufficient to prevent further rises in unemployment, incomes remain under pressure, and a sustained recovery in the major advanced economies is not yet assured,” he said. Swan said Australia remained on course to balance the books by 2016, although net debt would hit a height of 10.0 percent of GDP in 2013-2014. Unemployment was earlier forecast to peak at 8.5 percent next year. The central bank is widely tipped to raise rates again on Tuesday after lifting them off five-decade lows last month, making Australia the first major Western economy to withdraw monetary stimulus in the wake of the downturn.

Two years later, Walsenburg and surrounding Huerfano County are still waiting, its residents caught in a collision between two of the West’s vital resources: Water and natural gas. “The water is so saturated with methane and other chemicals it is not to be used for human consumption,” said Bernice Angely, who’s had water trucked to her home 10 miles west of town since her well blew up in July 2007. Petroglyph Energy Inc., a Boise, Idaho-based firm that has worked the rolling plains of the Raton Basin since 1999, suspended drilling until it can stem the methane. Colorado also is rewriting rules that had allowed Petroglyph to discharge water runoff from its drilling into streams and creeks. But Petroglyph says it’s not clear the drilling caused the methane leaks or prompted other area water wells to run dry. Eying what it calls an extremely promising natural gas field, it believes a shallow water formation tapped by area homeowners isn’t connected to a deeper one pumped by the company for its drilling operations. Petroglyph chief operating officer Paul Powell also believes a growing number of new homes in the area could explain some of the dry water wells. “We’ll do what we need to do,” Powell said, stressing that his firm is working with the state on a
solution. Petroglyph has a plan to prevent the flow of methane into water wells by creating a hydraulic barrier. The company has proposed pumping water from an underground formation and injecting it into a row of wells where gas drilling occurs. Powell said gas will migrate into a void, and “if the void is full of water, there isn’t room for gas to migrate through it.” State regulators say the plan is plausible but that Petroglyph needs to prove it works. Democratic U.S. Rep. John Salazar, who farms in the nearby San Luis Valley, has asked the U.S. Geological Survey to weigh in by evaluating the area’s water quality and formations to determine if the gas drilling is to blame for the problems. Water coursing through porous rock and streams has allowed farming, ranching and new subdivisions to thrive in the semiarid area about 160 miles south of Denver. It also helps trap methane gas in the vast coal seams that once made the area a mining hot spot. The coal mines are gone, but the methane that made digging for it dangerous is a valuable resource. Companies like Petroglyph pump huge volumes of water out of the ground to relieve the pressure trapping the natural gas. Steve Gunderson, director of Colorado’s water quality control division, said Petroglyph will have to build a water treatment plant before
it gets a new permit to discharge water. The old permit allowed Petroglyph to release up to 8 million gallons of water daily. Fourth-generation dairy farmer Brett Corsentino blames the discharges into the Cucharas River for ruining his corn crops. He uses river water to irrigate his crops just a few miles east of the homeowners having problems with their wells. He says the high levels of sodium in the wastewater has diminished his soil’s ability to absorb water and stunted the corn’s growth. “They say, `Well, there’s no proof,’” Corsentino said. “Well, we’d been getting along for generations just fine until they started pumping 8 million gallons out of this country.” Corsentino also says his herd suffered abnormally high birth and death rates and now numbers 400, down from 650. He believes the cows consumed too much sodium from the water and corn grown from it. His corn used to produce 6,000 tons of silage; this year’s crop yielded 1,500 tons. However, Corsentino says his herd is healthier and milk production has increased since drilling stopped. “There’s an obvious direct, substantial impact to Brett Corsentino’s dairy,” the state’s Gunderson said of the drilling.

LETTING children sleep late on weekends and holidays might help them avoid becoming overweight or obese, a new study suggests. Researchers in Hong Kong found that children who got less sleep tended to be heavier (as measured by body mass index, or BMI) than children who slept more. But among children who slept less than eight hours a night, those who compensated for their weekday sleep deficit by sleeping late on weekends or holidays were significantly less likely to be overweight or obese. The study, which confirmed previous research linking sleep deficits to obesity in children, also found that, on average, children slept significantly longer on weekends and holidays than on school weekdays. However, the overweight children tended to get less weekend/holiday sleep than their normal-weight peers. The researchers didn’t determine why obese and overweight children were less likely to sleep late on holidays or weekends, but noted that they tended to spend more time doing homework and watching TV than their normal-weight peers. Biological factors might also play a role in the compressed sleep cycle, they said. “There’s a lot of evidence linking short sleep duration to higher body mass,” said Kristen Knutson, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, who was not involved in the study. “What’s unique about this study is that it’s the first to show that extending sleep on weekends may help with avoiding weight gain.” Still, the researchers urged caution in the interpretation of their findings, acknowledging that “an irregular sleep-wake schedule and insufficient sleep among school-aged children and adolescents has been documented with a variety of serious repercussions, including increased daytime sleepiness, academic difficulties, and mood and behavioral problems.” The precise nature of the link between short sleep duration and obesity remains unclear, said Mary A. Carskadon, professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School in Providence, R.I., and director of chronobiology at Bradley Hospital in East Providence.
SYDNEY – A massive oil leak off Australia’s northwest coast poses an “immediate risk” to dozens of marine species, with untold numbers possibly dying and sinking to the Timor Sea floor, a report has said. Biologist James Watson was commissioned to carry out a government survey of the West Atlas drilling rig, where at least 400 barrels of oil have gushed daily into the ocean since August 21. He found about 20 dead seabirds and a dead sea snake among 23 species, and said the oil appeared to be drawing certain species into the toxic area, where they were at grave risk. “The presence of dying birds and dead sea snakes suggest that there is an immediate risk to species utilising the water that has been affected by the oil slick,” Watson wrote in his report, which was released late Friday. “It is possible that species that are dying or dead and lying in oil-affected water may not stay afloat for long periods of time, making it unlikely that we would find large numbers of dead animals,” he added. There was a “significant risk” that a change in conditions could push the oil into deeper waters further west and north, where large numbers of endangered cetaceans lived, he added. “Moreover, as the breeding seasons ends... more juvenile birds will be feeding throughout the region. As such, we believe that over the upcoming months the oil slick — if uncontained — may have an increasing impact on these species,” he said. Watson said the spill appeared to have changed the feeding and breeding behaviour of some animals, and long-term studies were needed to determine how severe the impact was.
“I am amazed at how little Australia cares about this,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper. “This is a huge oil slick.” The rig’s Thai-based operator PTTEP Australasia failed in a fourth attempt to plug the leak, now entering its 10th week, and said it could be months before the operation was successful. More than 2,000 barrels of oil have been recovered from the ocean surface in clean up efforts to date. Environment Minister Peter Garrett said he remained very concerned about the long-term impact and was “certainly very anxious to see this spill stopped quickly and safely.”

DOHA – Serena Williams heads for 2010 as world number one, WTA Championships, Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, but there’s a worrying storm gathering over women’s tennis. The new year should spark a celebration of marquee match-ups where the Williams sisters renew their epic rivalry with the returning Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin. Hopes are also high for a fully-fit Maria Sharapova to grace more tennis courts than red carpets, while Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka lead the new generation. Williams pocketed 1.55 million dollars for relieving sister Venus of her WTA Championships title here on Sunday, but it wasn’t the only mind-boggling sum giving the WTA headaches. The deadline for a renewal of the tour’s 88-milliondollar, six-year agreement with title sponsor Sony Ericsson is the end of the year, but the global financial crisis is never far from sports’ front doors. “We are looking at our sponsorship seriously. We haven’t made any decision yet, and all options are open,” said Aldo Ligouri, vice-president and head of global communications at Sony Ericsson. When the deal was signed in 2005, it represented a much-needed boost for the WTA, which had been without a title sponsor in 2003 and 2004. However, Ericsson recently reported a 74-percent fall in net profit blamed on falling sales and problems at its Sony Ericsson venture. If that wasn’t enough, there are signs that the WTA Roadmap, designed to protect the long-term health of its top stars, may not be having the desired effect. The 4.55 million dollar WTA Championships featured the world’s top eight players. By the end of the week, however, 10 had taken part with one alternate even being replaced by another. Tearful Dinara Safina lasted just two games and 12 minutes, losing her world number one spot while Wozniacki and Azarenka quit before the end of their involvement. Serena played the final with her left thigh bandaged; Venus needed protection for her left knee. “We definitely weren’t physically a 100-percent today. But it just shows you how much we try,” said Serena, who blamed physical exhaustion on her decision to

The holder of 41 titles, it’s been eight months since she last held up a trophy and she looked sluggish in Doha, squeezing into the semi-finals despite losing two of three round-robin encounters.
SONOMA, Calif. – John Cook had a tough time staying focused Sunday in the final round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championships. Loren Roberts had no such problem. Cook spent the morning exchanging text messages with Joey Sindelar, his close friend and former Ohio State teammate who was hospitalized Saturday after having a pulmonary embolism. Then Cook went out and won the season-ending tournament by five strokes for his second Champions Tour title in three weeks. “That kind of shocks you a little bit when one of your compadres goes down,” said Cook, who closed with a 3-under 69 to finish 22-under 266 at Sonoma Golf Club. “That’s serious stuff. I don’t like to see anybody, friends or family, go down like that. I was thinking of him all day.” Cook, also the Administaff Small Business Classic winner two weeks ago in Texas, broke the tournament record of 268 shared by Jim Thorpe and Andy Bean. Roberts shook off two days of struggles for a second straight 66 to tie for sixth at 13-under 275 and win the points title and $1 million annuity for the second time in three years. He had to hold off a strong surge from Bernhard Langer (68), who also finished at 13 under. “I played two totally different golf tournaments in one week,” Roberts said. “The first two days I really didn’t hit it very good and I really didn’t putt well. You just hate to get to the end and blow it.” He didn’t, shooting 12 under over the final two rounds. Roberts, the 2007 points champion, said he plans to donate a portion of his winnings to a
Sacramento-area school district to help keep girls’ and boys’ golf programs going. Russ Cochran (68) finished second in the tournament. Brad Bryant (69) and Jeff Sluman (68) were 15 under, and Phil Blackmar (69) was 14 under. After opening with a 68 on Thursday, Cook shot a tournament-record 62 in the second round and followed with a 67 to enter Sunday with a comfortable lead. Though he continued to have a few problems off the tee, Cook stayed consistent throughout the four days and avoided getting into serious trouble. He was bogey free Sunday and had only two bogeys the entire tournament, making up for whatever problems he did have with a solid short game and steady putting.

Real visit Milan in role reversal Reuters -
BERNE - AC Milan and Real Madrid will swap roles on Tuesday when they meet again in the Champions League while Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid are among 10 sides still seeking their first wins of the group phase. Barcelona, beaten 2-1 at home by debutants Rubin Kazan last time out, visit the same team on Wednesday knowing that another defeat would put them out of the top two in Group F. The group stage’s fourth round of matches could also be crucial for the fortunes of former champions Bayern Munich and Liverpool, currently out of the top-two places in their groups. Bayern host French champions Girondins Bordeaux in Group A and Liverpool, who have lost six of their last seven games, travel to Olympique Lyon in Group E. Real playmaker Kaka returns to the San Siro stadium for the first time as the Spaniards visit his old club hoping to avenge their 3-2 defeat at the Bernabeu. That result prompted a dramatic turnaround in the fortunes of the two sides. AC Milan’s rookie Brazilian coach Leonardo, who went into the game under severe pressure, is now sitting pretty after an unbeaten seven-match run while opposite number Manuel Pellegrini is feeling the heat. “Real is a game which you especially prepare for. We hope to maintain our high level of play,” Leonardo said.
Pellegrini’s position was questioned after Real’s embarrassing 4-0 defeat by third-tier Alcorcon in the King’s Cup made it three games without a win. A 2-0 La Liga win over Getafe on Saturday, courtesy of two goals from unsung Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain, calmed the waters a bit. But defeat on Tuesday could see another storm brewing for Pellegrini, who will again be without injured Cristiano Ronaldo. “The papers have been full of names of great coaches but we are happy with Pellegrini and we are sure he will finish the season positively,” club president Florentino Perez told Italian television. Milan and Real top Group C with six points, three ahead of Olympique Marseille and FC Zurich who meet in France. Barcelona travel to Russia having had their league lead over Real slashed to one point following a 1-1 draw at Osasuna. Rubin Kazan, Barcelona and Dynamo Kiev each have four points in Group F with Inter on three.

Bayern strikers battle it out for Bordeaux game Reuters -
BERLIN - Italian striker Luca Toni looks to have beaten Mario Gomez in their battle for a Bayern Munich starting spot for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Girondins Bordeaux. Toni, who scored midweek against Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Cup and carved out several chances in Saturday’s goalless draw with VfB Stuttgart straight after coming on, may have done enough to confine 30-million-euro striker Gomez to the bench. Gomez, the Bundesliga’s most expensive signing, was picked to start against his former club Stuttgart but coach Louis van Gaal hinted Toni, who missed much of the early season with a heel injury, would be his choice against Bordeaux. “The reason Gomez (started) was that he is from here and he knows the grass, he knows the pitch,” Van Gaal said. “But Toni had played four matches in a row and I have to think about Bordeaux.” With only four points from three matches, the Bavarians have so far failed to meet expectations, lying in third place in Group A, a point behind Juventus and three off leaders Bordeaux. MILAN - Real Madrid playmaker Kaka will come up against a resurgent AC Milan when he returns to the San Siro on Tuesday for the first time since his close-season move. Milan were on the ropes before their stunning 3-2 win at Real two weeks ago and now look favourites in the reverse Champions League Group C fixture. Fans of the Serie A club were shattered by the sale of the Brazilian and a dreadful start to the season, including a 1-0 home defeat by FC Zurich, made them feel even worse. However, a switch to a 4-3-3 formation has since worked wonders and Leonardo’s side are unbeaten in seven games. “Real is a game which you especially prepare for. We hope to maintain our high level of play,” Leonardo told reporters after Saturday’s 2-0 win over Parma. Striker Marco Borriello, fit after a year out with a back injury, was set up by Ronaldinho to score both goals but faces a battle to stay in the side with European maestro Filippo Inzaghi, 36, waiting in the wings. Only one of the target men is expected to start on Tuesday with former Barcelona forward Ronaldinho set to play on the left of the front three and Alexandre Pato, who netted twice at the Bernabeu, poised for the right. Hamilton bemoans brake problems
LEWIS Hamilton believes that he and McLaren were unable to show their true pace in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after battling brake problems that ultimately forced his retirement. Prerace favourite Hamilton led from the start, but a problem with the right-rear brake pad began to show up on the team’s data on lap three.

Kobayashi set for 2010 Toyota drive KAMUI Kobayashi is now set to race for Toyota in Formula 1 next year, after team president John Howett said he had been impressed with the youngster in his two outings for the team. Kobayashi delivered his first F1 points with a strong run to sixth place in Abu Dhabi helped in part by a brave overtaking move past world champion Jenson Button. And with Toyota looking for new drivers for next year, Howett said it was likely that Kobayashi would take one of the team’s seats in 2010. “It looks like it,” explained Howett. “We will have to give really serious consideration, as he has really shown very good strong results. “I am very impressed. We were very happy again. What we like is his real fighting spirit. He is not intimidated by anybody. It’s very positive.” Howett said that Kobayashi’s performances had erased all doubts about his potential – after a difficult season he endured in GP2 this year. “I think that is why there was some hesitation. We always understood that he was very good in terms of racing spirit. That has been there all through his career, but because partly the GP2 pace did not look competitive, you were always hesitant against the risk. It is a lesson definitely that sometimes we should
all be braver in our driver choices and not go for the safer risk-hedged decision.” And although experienced drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Adrian Sutil have been linked with Toyota, Howett also suggested that Kobayashi’s performances could also prompt the team to take two youngsters. “I think that is some-
thing we are currently discussing. There are some [current] drivers that are not fixed who you would consider, but if they looked not likely then we would prefer to take a brave new direction.” Toyota is likely to firm up its driver line-up after a Japanese board meeting on November 15, where the team’s operating budget for 2010 will be signed off.

He retired as a precaution after losing top spot to Sebastian Vettel in the first round of pitstops, with the team’s preliminary investigation suggesting a one-off faulty brake pad. “I had a good start, but I realised early on that something wasn’t right with the brakes,” said Hamilton. “After three or four laps, it became clear that there was a problem with my right-rear brake pad, so I couldn’t open up the gap back to Sebastian and Mark [Webber].” “When the problem got worse, the team radioed me and told me to stop at the end of the lap. Of course, it’s a shame that we couldn’t show the performance we’d had throughout the weekend - but sometimes that’s racing. However, I think we can be really proud of our efforts: who’d have thought we’d finish third in the Constructors’ Championship at the start of this season? It’s been an incredible year, and now I can’t wait for next season to start so I can fight for the world championship again.” Team principal Martin Whitmarsh paid tribute to Hamilton’s performance, and admitted that it could have been dangerous to allow him to continue to run with the faulty brake pad. “Lewis drove absolutely superbly all weekend – in fact he drove absolutely superbly all year,” said Whitmarsh. “Today, though, after just five laps, his right rear brake pad began to show signs of an unusual level of wear – a rogue pad, we think – and as a result we had to stop him for safety reasons. That was an enormous pity, because up to that point he’d shown blistering pace every day.” Whitmarsh said that he was proud of his team crowning its impressive turnaround after starting the season well off the pace by clinching third in the Constructors’ Championship. “The fact that we beat Ferrari to third place is of course a matter of pride to us, and I want to pay tribute to all at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes for the superhuman efforts they all made in achieving that milestone,” said Whitmarsh.
