Indonesia issued a red alert after the Sinabung volcano erupted, blanketing the area in thick and acrid black smoke, disaster officials said, although no casualties have yet been reported. “It’s clearly dangerous so we’ve raised the warning to the highest level, or red level,” said Surono, head of the nation’s volcano disaster alert centre. “From the crater, it shot smoke and volcanic ash 1,500 metres (5,000 feet) into the sky,” he told AFP. “Initially we thought the ash and smoke were triggered by rain but now we know the driving pressure was from magma.” The 2,460-metre (8,100 feet) Sinabung in northern Sumatra has not erupted for more than 400 years but had shown “some volcanic activity” since Friday, Surono said. “Our team is coordinating with district and provincial officials to monitor the situation,” he added. About 9,300 people have been
evacuated from several affected villages to towns — including Berastagi and Kabanjahe — outside a six-kilometre “danger zone”, search and rescue team official Mohammad Agus Wibisono told AFP. “The ash has spread to a distance of 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the volcano. Many of the villagers evacuated were farmers and they said the ash had settled on their vegetable farms,” he said. There were however no flight disruptions, Wibisono said. Disaster Management Agency spokesman Priyadi Kardono told AFP that many residents in four affected villages at the foot of the volcano had fled their homes immediately after the eruption. “Many had left their homes even before they were evacuated. They said the volcano was spewing thick black smoke, small stones and sulphur. They were so scared they decided to leave their homes and go to the city,” Kardono said, adding
that a rescue team has been sent to survey the area. “The area is blanketed with thick smoke and there’s a strong smell of sulphur,” he added. He said while there were no reports yet of any deaths or injuries, “many” had reported breathing difficulties. “We have anticipated that people may have respiratory problems from inhaling dust. So we’ve given them face masks and are preparing to send in medicines for respiratory infections,” he added. Tents and food are also being arranged for the evacuees and “the situation is under control,” Kardono said. Local media reported that a man had died after experiencing breathing difficulty while fleeing from his village, but Karo district official Andes Mbaga told AFP he had died from heart failure. “He had a history of heart problems. He was having breathing problems which could have been
worsened by the ash and dust floating around,” he said. Evacuees from 18 affected villages are “all doing well” and those who complained of breathing problems are receiving medical help, he added. “Many of them have removed their face masks. The volcanic activity has also reduced significantly. Lava was emitted during the eruption but it didn’t flow out. “The experts are still monitoring the volcanic activity so we don’t know when the status will be downgraded,” Mbaga said. Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity. It has more active volcanoes than any other country. Earlier this month, four people went missing after the 1,784metre (5,853-foot) Mount Karangetang, on the remote island of Siau in North Sulawesi province, erupted. Mount Baru Jari on Lombok island, near the resort island of Bali, erupted in May, spewing ash and lava at least 1,500 metres into the sky, damaging crops but not threatening villagers.

DENPASAR — The most appropriate strategy undertaken in the effort to minimize social inequalities is to provide life skills education to the people that are economically disadvantaged. By mastering vocational skills, communities are expected to create their own jobs or work at companies requiring their capability. Thus, poverty rate can be reduced. It was delivered by the Head of Bali Learning Activity Development Agency (BPKB) I.B. Anom, last Friday (Aug 27). I.B. Anom revealed that vocational skill was like fishing. By providing fishhook, community would have enough opportunities to get fish. On that account, to make people sefl-contained, they should be given ‘fishhook’ not a ‘fish.’ If they were immediately provided with ‘fish’ or material assistance, it would not last permanently. Even, it would result in dependency and be less encouraging the community to achieve independence. “At the very least, by providing life skills, community will be able to bring in revenue, so that they could be independent in the long run. Therefore, to minimize the social gap, the most appropriate strategy adopted is by giving education, life skills or vocational skills,” said I.B. Anom. However, more serious attention should be
paid by all parties when they have mastered the skills. As consequence, they would be more encouraged to improve themselves. “Kindly give priority to employ those that have mastered life skills,” said I.B. Anom denoting the third champion of scientific writing competition on green province in relation to the anniversary of Bali Province in 2010 and the first champion of writing scientific papers in the series of anniversary of Bali Province in 2009. I.B Anom added that the main function and task of BPKB was conducting research and development of non-formal education model. The agency was very strategic to conduct studies and create a model of education-related life skills. DENPASAR - In the arena of national photo and documentary film contest, Bali managed to show off a brilliant achievement. In the photo contest of the Indonesia Development 2010 in the series of the 65th anniversary of RI’s Independence, the envoy of Bali won the first prize for student category with the photograph entitled Non-discrimination, and second winner for pupil category with the work entitled Night at Market and the fourth runner up for pupil category entitled Full Attendance. They were Syafiudin from the Indonesia Institute of Arts or ISI Denpasar (first winner), Nyoman Aryadi Wijaya (second winner) and I Made Adi Dharmawan (fourth runner up). Meanwhile, in the documentary contest, Bali could occupy the third position on behalf of the Faculty of Communication Dwijendra University, Denpasar. In the documentary film contest, Bali sent five winners of similar event for Bali Provincial level. However, the third winner in the national level was achieved by the second winner in the same documentary film contest
in the series of Bali Arts Festival (BAF) XXXII. Such third national winner was Faculty of Communication Dwijendra University with the work of a documentary film entitled Swadharmaning Jero ring Batur or A Vocation of Jero at Batur. DENPASAR - Maestro of Balinese dancers showed off their dedication again to the grandeur of Balinese culture. The performance of the dance involving several famous old artists was facilitated by Intan Budaya Negeri Foundation and centered at Peliatan Grand Palace, Ubud, Gianyar, last Saturday and Sunday (Aug 28-29). It was accompanied by Gunung Sari gamelan troupe established on November 24, 1926. Prior to performance, Chairwoman of the Intan Budaya Negeri Foundation A.A. Istri Wirati made a visit to Ketut Nadha Bali Press Building, last Friday (Aug 27). She said the proponents of performance consisted of the dance maestros known as the first and second generation of the Balinese dance development. “We would like to dedicate the grandeur of Balinese culture through maestros of Balinese old artists,” she said. In the meantime, CEO of Bali Post Media Group (KMB), Satria Naradha, when hosting the visit of these Balinese maestros admitted their spirit was enviable. Their total and sincere dedication in preserving and passing on the Balinese culture had made them to have taksu or divine inspiration of the art itself. “In our life, taksu should be established from a genuine feeling of our identity. Taksu should be part of the totality in our devotion to the Balinese culture,” he said. According to Istri Wirati, the proponents of the performance included I Gusti Ayu Raka Rasmi. This dancer was listed as the founder of Intan Budaya Negeri Foundation. Raka Rasmi was born in 1939 in Teruna Hamlet, Peliatan, Ubud, and deeply involved in Legong dance
since the age of 9 years. In the performance, she would dance the Oleg Tamulilingan and Legong. The performance itself was also shored up by Jro Made Puspawati. This dance artist of Tegeh Kori-born, Kesiman in 1933 is a maestro of dance who often made presentation in the State’s palace during the reign of President Sukarno. Jro Made Puspawati had deeply involved in the world of dance since her childhood and claimed to be going to dance until whenever. She would perform the Candrametu (rising moon) Dance. The artist that had visited several countries hoped that the art should be imbued with the majesty of conscience to engender divine inspiration (taksu). In addition, another artist namely Jro Gadung Arwati from Anom Palace, Tabanan, also was also scheduled to take part. “I will perform the Wiranatha Dance,” she said. She told that it was the dance taking her to roam around the world. Meanwhile, female dancer participating in the event was the maestro Ida Bagus Oka Wirjana. The artist born at Belangsinga in 1929 claimed to have learned the dance from Ida Bagus Kompiang. Had once lived in Tabanan and often saw the maestro I Ketut Marya dancing the Kebyar Duduk. Similarly, the artist once lived in Japan and in the State’s Palace during the era of Sukarno. He admitted to dedicate his life to Balinese culture, especially the art of dance. The performance was also supported by Ni Ketut Arini. She is an artist of the second generation born in 1943 and has got in touch with the world of dance since she was 10. She is also known as a dance teacher. In addition, the dance artist from North Bali, Ni Luh Ketut Menek was also ensured to participate. Menek revealed that dancing was a call of her life. (dir)

Yet it’s more into a cigarette product name so it is not suitable for the city’s identity. So now there has been discussion to change its name to a hero name and as public representative of South Denpasar Indonesia National Marhaenism Party (PNIM) also Denpasar House of Representative Commission B member, I Ketut Resmiyasa in Denpasar, Friday (27/8) suggested the name of the street to to be Soekarno-Hatta. The name was suggested as national figure should be lived forever used on protocol roads in Denpasar more over these two Republic Indonesia proclamation figures which hasn’t been used in Bali, “There are some Bali public figures already used for some streets, these two Republic Indonesia figures names are very suitable for a road
in Denpasar too.” Resmiyasa mentioned that the name used now is more into cigarette product when its real name was actually Teuku Umar Street. Yet as it is separated by Imam Bonjol Street, the people picked the name so, “That name was used based on the Marlboro advert on the end of that road.”
Looking at the phenomenon, Resmiyasa hoped the related agency can help in giving guidelines connecting to the name of the protocol road in Denpasar as the road is quite wide and the length deserves a more suitable name, “We suggested the road suits the name of the two Republic Indonesia proclaimers, Soekarno-Hatta.” (kmb12)

Two Methamphetamine Courier Captured by Police Bali Post
DENPASAR - Bali Region Police Methamphetamine Directorate Fast Attack Troops captured I Made Sutawan (28) and Gede Eka Kurniawan (33) who were thought to be involved in a methamphetamine case. The troop confiscated an evidence of methamphetamine shabushabu type and a Nokia cell phone. The capture happened in two different places on Wednesday (25/8) afternoon. First, troops captured Sutawan in the west of Puputan Margarana field, Renon, Kusuma Atmajaya Street, Denpasar where they checked and found the shabu-shabu. This capturing was based on the people’s information and a plastic of it was found in the accused pocket. “We got a complain and said accused is involved in methamphetamine
case,” Head of Bali Police Dept. Public Relation Board, Great Commissioner, Gede Sugianyar, mentioned last Friday (27/8). From the first capture, then there was development. It was admitted the methamphetamine was received from a man, Eka Kurniawan. At that time, second accused was not far from the scene. Without fighting back, Eka Kurniawan was then captured in front of Regional Development Bank (BPD) Bali office, Raya Puputan Street, Renon, Denpasar. From the hand of the second accused that lives at Pulau Supioro Street No.23, Denpasar, a Nokia cell phone was confiscated. Accused methamphetamine admitted as the bringer of the evidence. The Celebration Of Kuningan Day Balinese Hindu will celebrate the Kuningan Day, a day of prosperity, on August 21, 2004, marking the end of the Galungan Day celebration. Kuningan Day is a time for commemoration as ancestors return to heaven after ten days dwelling on earth and when the Balinese say thanks to the gods for their mercy to the humankind. On the day, Balinese will have holidays and be seen visiting each other and sharing fun. Locals will be seen redecorating the bamboo pole, locally called penjor, which has been erecting in front of each
house compound’s entrance gate since a day before Galungan, by taking down the white clothes and substituted them with the yellow ones, symbolizing the prosperity. The celebration of Kuningan Day is always coincided with the temple’s anniversary in Serangan Island. The island lies in southern part of Denpasar, and takes around 15 minutes drive to reach the area by passing the bridge now nearing completion. The temple itself will be jam-packed by the people dressed in traditional Balinese costumes for three days. VINEYARD HAVEN – Three days before the official end of the US combat mission in Iraq, US President Barack Obama said on Saturday Iraq was now a “sovereign” nation free to determine its own destiny. “On Tuesday, after more than seven years, the United States of America will end its combat mission in Iraq and take an important step forward in responsibly ending the Iraq war,” Obama said in his weekly radio address. The president, who is spending his last full vacation day Saturday on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, is to deliver on Tuesday a nationally-televised Oval Office address on Iraq. “As a candidate for this office, I pledged I would end this war,” he said Saturday. “As president, that is what I am doing. We have brought home more than 90,000 troops since I took office.” US troop numbers in Iraq fell below 50,000 last Tuesday in line with Obama’s instructions as part of a “responsible drawdown” of troops, seven years on from the
invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein. American troop levels are now less than a third of the peak figure of around 170,000 during the US military “surge” of 2007, when Iraq was in the midst of a brutal Shiite-Sunni sectarian war that cost thousands of lives. But more than 4,400 US servicemen and women have lost their lives in this war since it began in 2003, according to an AFP count based on data from www.icasualties.org, an independent website. And violence in the country, while down from the worst levels seen at the height of sectarian strife, continues to threaten stability in the nation, spooking investors, terrorizing religious minorities and raising the specter of a return to chaos after the end of US combat operations. JIMBARAN - After 35 days of waiting for the perfect swell to hit Padang Padang, the holding period for the 2010 Rip Curl Cup Invitational, presented by Power Balance, has drawn to a close. Even with an unprecedented fiveweek waiting period during prime swell season (July 25 - Aug. 29), the waves at Padang Padang never reached the world-class caliber required to hold the Ultimate Tuberiding Contest. Contest directors had been monitoring a moderate swell brewing in the southern Indian Ocean, scheduled to hit Bali on Sept. 1, but have now determined that the swell is not big enough to warrant extending the waiting period. “Our goal is to see 32 of the world’s best tube riders competing on the best day of the year at Padang,” Rip Curl SE Asia marketing manager James Hendy said. “Anything less would mean compromising the integrity of the event.” Hendy said holding the contest at an alternate site, such as Bingin or Uluwatu, was also out of the question. On two occasions during the wait-
ing period, large west swells prompted event organizers to place the event on standby. While Padang certainly dished out some memorable tube rides for the 32 surfers gathered in Bali during these swells, the conditions were never consistent enough to hold the contest. “I’m already looking forward to next year’s contest,” said international invitee Flynn Novak (Hawaii). “Even though Padang never broke heavy enough for the contest, we’ve all still been scoring perfect waves every day for the past five weeks. I hope I’m lucky enough to get invited back next year.” On Friday night, Sept. 3, Rip Curl will host a closing ceremony on the rooftop of its Sunset Road headquarters for all the 32 invited surfers, ISC event staff, and everyone involved with this year’s Padang Cup. The invited surfers, who came to Bali from as far away as Hawaii, New Zealand, Japan and Europe, will be looking to let off some steam after one of the longest waiting periods in competitive surfing. News Malaysia uncovers nearly 100 live reptiles in bag Reuters
KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian airport security arrested a convicted wildlife smuggler after finding almost 100 live reptiles in his luggage, the country’s Wildlife and National Parks Department said. Anson Wong, already convicted of trafficking in wildlife in the United States, was in transit from the Malaysian island state of Penang to the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Thursday when Malaysia Airlines staffs at Kuala Lumpur airport were alerted to a bag that had broken while on a conveyor belt. The department, in a statement issued late on Saturday, said its enforcement officers found 95 boa constrictors, two rhinoceros vipers and a matamata turtle inside the luggage. Boa constrictors are subject to regulations or a complete ban in international commercial trade as they are listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
The statement said Wong would remain in detention for two days. Under Malaysian law, if found guilty, he could face seven years in jail and fines of up to 100,000 ringgit ($32,000) for each animal or both. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Wong had previously pleaded guilty to a trafficking in the United States in 2001 and was sentenced to 71 months in jail. TRAFFIC, a wildlife trade monitoring organization, said Malaysia must “rise to the challenge” of confronting new evidence of its role as a hub for those engaged in wildlife smuggling. “Their attempt at mocking Malaysia’s legal system must be dealt with head-on,” said Kanitha Krishnasamy, TRAFFIC Southeast Asia Senior Programme Officer. On Friday, Thai customs officials found a two-month-old tiger stashed in a bag filled with tiger toys which had been checked in for an international passenger flight.

KARACHI, Pakistan – Floodwaters inundated a large town in southern Pakistan on Sunday, spreading further destruction in an area where hundreds of thousands of people who fled to higher ground are in dire need of food and water. Almost all of Sujawal’s 250,000 residents fled from the town before the water rushed in, but the damage to homes, clinics and schools added to the widespread devastation the floods have caused across Pakistan, said Hadi Baksh, a disaster management official in southern Sindh province. Authorities in Sujawal were trying to limit the damage, but the water level has already risen to five feet (1.5 meters) in the center of town and up to 10 feet (3 meters) in the surrounding villages, said Anwarul Haq, the top official in Sujawal. The floodwaters also threatened Thatta, one of the major cities in southern Sindh and the base of operations for local authorities trying to cope with a disaster that has overwhelmed the Pakistani government and international partners who have stepped in to help. The floods began in the mountainous northwest about a month
ago with the onset of monsoon rains and have moved slowly down the country toward the coast in the south, inundating vast swaths of prime agricultural land and damaging or destroying more than 1 million homes. More than 8 million people are in need of emergency assistance across the country. The United Nations, the Pakistani army and a host of local and international relief groups have been rushing aid workers, medicine, food and water to the affected regions, but are unable to reach many people. The U.S. said Saturday that it would deploy an additional 18 helicopters to help with the relief effort. The U.S. military is already operating 15 helicopters and three C-130 aircraft in the country, the U.S. Embassy said in a statement. The floodwaters that hit Sujawal on Sunday surged into the town after breaking through a levee on the swollen Indus River two days ear-
lier. The water also flooded parts of the main road connecting Sujawal and Thatta, said Baksh, the disaster management official. Many of the people who fled Sujawal — located about 90 miles (150 kilometers) southeast of Karachi, the capital of Sindh — headed to Makli, a hill near Thatta that contains a vast Muslim graveyard. About half a million flood victims are camped out on the hill, Baksh said. Most lack any form of shelter and are desperate for food and water. “We don’t have water to drink, not to mention food, tents or any other facility,” said Mohammed Usman, a laborer who fled Sujawal several days ago and needed water to help cope with a painful kidney stone. CHANGCHUN, China – North Korean leader Kim Jong Il apparently toured several Chinese border cities Sunday while on a secretive trip reportedly aimed at drumming up support for a succession plan involving his youngest son. Reporters have followed a motorcade — apparently used by the reclusive Kim — around several cities in northeast China. The 35-vehicle convoy accompanied by police cars with flashing lights was seen headed to the train station in Changchun on Saturday. In a photograph carried by Japan’s Kyodo News agency, a man in a khaki jumpsuit with thinning hair believed to be Kim is seen shaking hands at the train station with a man it identified as a senior Chinese official. The two men are standing on a red carpet and are surrounded by many officials. Kim rarely leaves North Korea and when he does he travels by special train. South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported Sunday that Kim was believed to have traveled to Yanbian, a Korean autonomous prefecture in the far northeastern Chinese province of Jilin bordering North Korea, after leaving Changchun. Kim is believed to have toured the cities of Yanji, Tumen and Hunchun in Yanbian, Yonhap reported, citing an unidentified source in Beijing. It said Kim would likely return home later Sunday. Kim’s visit to the cities may be related to China’s plans to develop its northeastern regions, Yonhap speculated. It said China wants to continue using North Korea’s port of Rajin and hopes to obtain permission to use other ports as well. North Korea does not announce

Government called on to repair damaged roads for Idul Fitri travelers Antara JAKARTA - A legislator has called on the government to repair damaged roads in order to provide travelers with good transportation services in the runup to the post-fasting month festivities. “A lot of road sections in different parts of the country while the number of Idul Fitri travelers using public transportation this year is expected to increase by 6.35 percent to about 15.5 million,” Abdul Hakim of the House of Representatives (DPR)’s Commission V for transportation affairs, said here over the weekend. He predicted that the traffic flow of this year’s Idul Fitri travelers could not be well organized because most of road sections were damaged. “This is because the number of this year’s travelers for land transportation alone is expected to reach 15.5 million, or an increase of 6.35 percent from that in 2009,” he added. Bad road infrastructures have
caused frequent traffic accidents. So, Hakim called on the Ministry of Public Works to repair soon damaged roads so that travelers would be provided relatively better services. He said that road infrastructures in Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi at present are in bad conditions. The damages happened to national, provincial and district roads. In a number of damaged sections, repair is being done but still it is hampered with bad weather. The same is also true to the train services which are expected to experience slight disturbance. The railways near Lapindo in East Java could experience floods when rain falls due to disturbance of mudflow. He said that there was no reason for the central and regional governments not to repair damaged roads. This matter has been stipulated in Law No. 22 / 2009 on Traffic and Transportation.

MEDAN - Police anti-terror unit Densus 88 arrested two suspected bank robbers in Medan, North Sumatra, recently following a raid at a house in Lubuk Pakam, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, on Saturday. North Sumatra regional police spokesman Senior Commissioner Baharudin Djafar said the two were known by their initials as Y and D. He said the raid lasted for about 40 minutes from 1.50pm to 2.30pm, done after the police found the two’s alleged involvement in the robbery in Medan that the regional police command was just developing. Bahrudin Djafar could not as yet confirm their concrete involvement in the CIMB Niaga Bank robbery recently that left one police officer dead. “We are still developing not only the CIMB Bank robbery case but also other violent crimes,” he said. He denied there had been a
shootout between Densus 88 members and the two suspects. However he said that Densus 88 members had indeed fired a shot when they tried to break open the door of the house. It is one of the raid procedures, he said. He said after the raid the police confiscated a motorcycle believed to have been used by the two in their criminal action. The incident began at the Darwin Immigration Detention Centre in northern Australia at 4:00 am (1800 GMT Saturday) when two men climbed a tree and refused to come down. Others among the 97 Indonesian crewmen in the compound then joined in, setting mattresses alight and chanting and yelling, prompting officials to call in police and fire officers, a department of immigration spokesman said. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that about a dozen of the men, wearing masks, face-paint and hoods and carrying long poles, had later taken to the roof of their building and were trying to
stop anyone climbing up to join them. “The protest has now concluded and order is being restored to the affected compound housing Indonesian crewman,” the immigration spokesman told AFP. “Their reasons are their own but obviously they were airing grievances about being detained generally.” The immigration department said there were 97 Indonesian crew detained in the compound and a “significant proportion” of them were involved in some way in the protest. No asylum seekers were involved in the incident which was limited to Indonesian crewmen likely to face people smuggling charges, who would have arrived in Australia with boats carrying the would-be refugees. Australia has a policy of mandatory detention for boatpeople and generally processes asylum seekers at Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean but increased numbers of arrivals have recently forced the reopening of centres on the mainland.

JAKARTA - Indonesia is expected to see a rice surplus of 5 million tons at the end of this year, helped by the realization of rice fields covering 12.257 million hectares in July, a minister said. “In the next two months, the area of paddy field is still going to increase,” Agriculture Minister Suswono said here on Friday. Assuming that water supply during the wet dry season was enough the government believed the target of planting rice on 664 thousand hectares in August and 526 hectares in September could be achieved, he said. The figures would bring the total
area of rice fields this year to 13.45 million hectares with the area of rice harvests projected at 13.08 million hectares, he said.If the average productivity of rice field reached 5.132 tons per hectare, rice production would reach 67.15 million tons of dry unhusked rice, a 3.08 percent increase compared to last year, he said. The increase was far higher than the rice consumption growth target of 1.34 percent for 2010, he said.Judging by the data, the minister gave the assurance that rice supplies would be safe until the end of 2010. “God willing, Indonesia will still undergo sustainable self-reliance in rice production. Even we will see a rice surplus of more than 5 million tons (at the end of this year),” he said.

DENPASAR – Bali’s Governor Made Mangku Pastika stated that government will add 350 units on integrated farming system called Simantri. The units will be spread in eight regencies and city in Bali until 2013. ‘’On the 2011 and 2012, we will add 100 units of Simantri centrals in each regency and city,” stated Pastika as expressed by the Government spokeperson Ketut Teneng. Ketut Teneng added Governor and Vice Governor giving special attention on this issue. In that case, the fund to develop Simantri system will be allocated around 200 million per farmers group. The allocation fund can be found on the 2011 budget and years to come. He explained that Pastika already socialize this system to farmers groups when he want to make this happen. On the begin-

It was more than wealth, the Dalang actually left the spirit of creativity also a culture asset, not only to the children or the Buleleng Government and Bali, but for the nation and the world. In the arts national friendship, Jero Dalang Diah who’s real name is Ketut Negara is very popular. Even the life he went through in the silence beautiful farmer village in the east of Singaraja City, more than ten years his ears weren’t functioning anymore, so the silence integrated with him. Moreover it was completed with the government not taking him seriously for what he’s done for the Indonesian art development. Luckily some artists and art goers of Indonesian arts come to his house so the spirit did not go away. Jero Dalang Diah was firstly known as a mastermind/puppeteer, painting wayang over paper, making wayang from animal skins, bade maker and other art stuffs. Although at his younger years around 1927, unintentionally he added something new to the Indonesian arts. At the time, he met some Japanese painting ladies over a glass which drew him to curiosity as it doesn’t look bad at all. So from there the wayang painting on glass in Nagasepaha started. He never learnt it from the Japanese directly; he only asked one painting to be studied by himself. The painting was then broken down and studied seriously to find out how a painter
put a colour over a glass then layered it again and again so it looked good from the other side. From there he started his style, wayang, and it was much more complicated than the ladies pattern. What he did was a finding even though it was known way before in other parts of Indonesia and the world. Not yet for wayang, he was the starter. Until now it is still being done by Nagasepaha Village and its surrounds even lately those ones that were developed are being exhibited in some big cities including Jakarta. Hardiman, Ganesha Education University (Undiksha) Fine Art Lecturer also international art curator mentioned this kind of art is also one of the Nation arts which its existence ignored due to the modern arts. It is one of the very few kinds of glass painting that are still alive in Indonesia. Besides Nagasepaha it’s also in Cirebon, Yogyakarta, Solo and Madura, “Nagasepaha painting art is definitely an Indonesian culture asset. It’s not only Buleleng’s, it is also the nation’s.” And so, as Jero Dalang Diah left, this kind of painting should get the same appreciation as other kind of paintings there are so it goes on forever. Especially this kind of painting won’t stop to only develop its aesthetic quality yet also produces holy stories meanings, marginalise art classes, dominate power and more, “To conclude, behind the transparency of the glass painting, it mirrors our real face.”

Second, Landscape Setting Period (1950s-1992). Set on a foreground or background built by nature landscape painting nearing naturalistic painting. This period was influenced by being ordered with settings such as Jelekong (West Java) or Sukaraja(Middle Java). As long as 40 years of this period its legitimate was gained by a power of glass painting practical creations. Third, Decorative Setting Period (1992-now), Unsdiksha involvement from Art Education Course is researching about its creativity process to create new things from it. Landscape setting – is said doesn’t have a united style and purpose – through this research process it was changed to decorative setting that is sourced from North Bali decorative art. Even though, this last period’s arrival now moved by landscape setting. The causer was expected by the dominating power through guiding programs coming from the rulers. AMLAPURA — Karangasem Regency through the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Karangasem Chapter just held a seminar discussing the spiritual tourism development plan at Candidasa, last Friday (Aug 27). Meanwhile, a tourism practitioner, Bagus Sudibia, in the seminar attended until the end by the Regent of Karangasem I Wayan Geredeg said that Ubud had initiated it since 20 years ago. So, according to the Bagus Sudibia, spiritual tourism actually was nothing new. Therefore, if Karangasem would indeed seriously develop the alternative attraction or new tourist attraction product, it had to be managed professionally and by promoting its distinctiveness. “Karangasem is indeed adequately potential to develop spiritual tourism. So the uniqueness and professionalism should be shown off,” he said. Aside from Bagus Sudibia as Chairman of the PHRI Bali, the seminar also presented some speakers of religious figures such as Prof. Made Titib, Prof. IB Gunada and spiritual motivator Gede Prama. Titib said that spiritual journey called tirthayatra or now developed into a spiritual tourism had been undertaken by strangers to Bali since ancient times. History said that Maharishi Markandeya from India even buried panca datu (five
metal foundations) at Besakih. Now many spiritual leaders of the world were even more familiar with famous temples in Bali. Moreover, those spiritualists had come to Bali for several times. Friends of Made Titib, for instance, had been to Andakasa Temple for 30 times, while another friend said to have come to Besakih Temple for 15 times. They were delighted and even more delighted to be in Bali because they felt always peaceful. According to Titib, it would become a challenge of its own for Karangasem Regency to develop spiritual tourism, especially how to make people smart and insightful in spiritual tourism. After all, Bali had always been known and until now remained to be visited by tens of thousands of foreign tourists because Bali had been known as the island of the gods, paradise island or the last paradise in the world or the island of thousand temples. So, this title should be maintained in the real life of society. So far, Titib was often embarrassed by his fellow spiritualists from various countries. When going down from great temples, he frequently saw young children getting drunk due to alcohol on the sidewalk and at villages. “I was shocked when knowing a village competition was won by village having many cafes. Ideally, it should be assessed in terms of peaceful atmosphere, non-existence of gambling, cockfight or
café activities. It is such a customary village that is worthy of being a champion in the village competition,” observed Titib. Titib also regretted that during the Galungan holiday bazaar customary villages often did not empower the potential of local youth club. Instead, they took advantage of café girls as waitress to attract more visitors, so they could increase the sales of liquor. “I hope that public officials in Bali could make a policy in order to maintain the indigenous wisdom, local culture and religion in Bali,” he asserted. Meanwhile, Gunada said that tourism and religion or spirituality constituted two paradoxical entities or nearly lay in opposite ends. Tourism was identical to the activity of seeking for worldly and glamorous pleasures. Conversely, spirituality tended to put more emphasis on the self-control toward quality of spiritualistic life. It was not easy to integrate both entities into spiritual tourism. It required prudence. The problem was that if it worked, of course it would have positive impact on the revenue and possibly would give an increase in social welfare of Balinese people materially. On the contrary, if it deviated while government was unable to uphold the initial ideals of the spiritual tourism development, it was worried that customs, culture and religion would degrade. “So it requires a concept, ideas as well as good preparation to do so,” he asserted. INGREDIENTS: 4 sml lobsters, weighing about 500 gr each or 1 kg large prawns 5 cups water 2 lemongrass, bruised 2 fragrant lime leaves 4 cups coconut milk few drops white vinegar fried shallots to garnish SPICE PASTE: 5 red chilies, seeded and chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 7 shallots, peeled and chopped 5 cm fresh turmeric, peeled and chopped 5 cm ginger, peeled and chopped 4 candlenuts 1 ½ tsp coriander ½ tsp dried shrimp paste toasted 1 sml tomato, peeled and seeded 2 tbsp oil 1 ½ tbsp tamarind pulp 1 salam leaf 1 lemon grass, bruised PREPARATION: Prepare spice paste by grinding or blending all ingredients except oil, tamarind, salam leaf and lemongrass. Heat oil, add spice paste and all other ingredients. Cook over moderate heat for about 5 minutes, then cool. Wash lobsters and leave whole. Bring water to the boil, add lobsters and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove lobsters, plunge in iced water for 1 minutes, then drain and remove meat. Return shells to the pot of water, keeping lobster meat aside. Add spice paste, lemongrass, lime leaves and vinegar to the water with the shells and simmer until 4 cups of stock remain. Add coconut milk and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain stock and return to pan. Add lobster and simmer for 1 minute. Serve garnished with fried shallots and accompanied by white rice.

BUSINESS China’s Wen urges new phase in trade with Japan Agence France-Presse
BEIJING - China and Japan should face the global financial crisis together and create a new era in trade between the world’s second and third largest economies, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Sunday. Wen made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada who on Saturday laid out a list of trade grievances in strategic economic talks with Chinese Vice Minister Wang Qishan. “Sino-Japanese economic and trade ties have withstood the serious test brought on by the global financial crisis and a positive trend for development has emerged,” Wen said, according to a news release by his cabinet. “Both sides must grasp the current and timely opportunity of the improvement in bilateral relations... to create a new phase in bilateral economic and trade cooperation.” The two countries should further focus on the “green economy”, Wen said, including recycling and environmental protection. “China and Japan have common interests in pushing forward regional cooperation, advancing the reform of the global economy and opposing trade protectionism,” Wen said. China’s economy outpaced Japan in the second quarter in nominal terms. The two countries are numbers two and three in the world
behind the United States. During Saturday’s talks, Japan became the latest of China’s trading partners to complain about the nation’s business environment. Japanese firms have borne the brunt of recurring labour disputes at foreign-established factories in China this year, and officials said Okada pressed Beijing for more “transparent” labour policies, without elaborating. “More and more Japanese companies are developing cooperation with the Chinese side,” the Chinese press release quoted Okada as saying. “They are not only using China as a production base, but are viewing China as an important market. The two sides are increasingly sharing the same fate.” On Saturday, Okada told journalists that he urged China to improve the business environment here. China has heard a chorus of complaints by European and US businesses and officials over perceived unfair policies and market restrictions hurting foreign enterprises.

TOKYO - Japan’s premier has ordered his industry minister to draw up a plan to boost domestic investment and keep jobs at home as a strong yen pressures Japanese firms to move factories abroad, reports said Sunday. Prime Minister Naoto Kan has instructed Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Masayuki Naoshima to compile “a programme to promote domestic investment” by October. Kan plans to incorporate part of the blueprint into a fresh stimulus he will outline on Tuesday, the Yomiuri Shimbun and other media reported. “In order to fix the economy, the first to do is (create) jobs, the second to do is jobs,” Kan told reporters Saturday, the Yomiuri said. The main feature of the plan would be measures to promote domestic investment from some 200 trillion yen (2.36 trillion dollars) of cash and deposits kept by Japanese companies, the reports said. Kan renewed pressure on the central bank to take additional monetary easing measures, reportedly saying: “I’d like to see the Bank of Japan governor as soon as he returns (from a
trip to the United States) and mention what we expect them to do.” The reports came as Kan said Friday he would outline measures to counter the effects of the yen’s strength this week, implying possible intervention by saying he would take “determined steps when necessary”. The measures could include subsidies for buying environmentally friendly goods, job creation programmes, financial aid to small and mid-sized companies and public spending on infrastructure such as hospitals, a senior official of Kan’s Democratic Party of Japan has said. The yen this week hit 15-year highs against the dollar, threatening exporters as it erodes repatriated profits, inflicting damage on Japan’s key growth driver. Roughly 40 percent of Japanese firms say they would move factories overseas if the yen stays at its current high of around 85 to the dollar, according to an official survey released Friday. Earlier reports Saturday said the BOJ will likely hold an emergency policy meeting early this week to discuss additional monetary easing.

SINGAPORE - Singapore’s massive bet on two casino resorts is already paying off after the number of arrivals in a single month crossed the one million mark for the first time in July, analysts said. Six months after opening its first casino in February, followed by the second in April, Singapore is already counting its winnings despite lingering concern about gambling-linked social problems among the local population. “Let there be no mistake about it, the legalisation of casino gaming in Singapore was always intended to be a part of an enhanced tourism strategy for the country,” said Jonathan Galaviz, a Las Vegas-based expert on Asian gaming. “The development of multi-billion dollar integrated resorts in Singapore is clearly paying off for the country, and they will continue to do so for at least the next decade,” said the managing director of Galaviz & Company. DBS Group, Southeast Asia’s biggest bank, said the casino resorts are expected to contribute about 1.5 billion US dollars to the economy this year. Church and civic groups had opposed the legalisation of casinos but the government went ahead in 2005 and allowed US-based Las Vegas Sands and Malaysia’s Genting group to build two complexes at a combined cost of 10 billion dollars. As a safeguard, the casinos were told to charge an entry fee equivalent to 74 dollars from Singaporean citizens and permanent residents, and a campaign against “problem gambling” was launched by the government. Singapore’s tourism board said the citystate, which has a population of just five million, welcomed one million visitors in July, thanks in large part to the pull of its new man-made tourist attractions. Tourism officials hope to see between 11.5 million and 12.5 million visitors this year — a figure well above the numbers visiting neighbouring countries blessed with white-sand beaches, towering mountains and other natural wonders. As well as the casinos, Singapore’s euphemistically named “integrated resorts” also offer theme parks, high-end shopping,
hotels and convention halls. Analysts say Singapore understood the importance of casinos in a broader context — not just as a means to lure the high-rollers but as part of a strategy to stay competitive as a travel destination and a “global city”. Founding father Lee Kuan Yew said the government had been “against casinos for decades” and “refused offers of seedy casinos from Macau.” But officials changed their position after seeing how the casino industry developed in Las Vegas, which offers Broadway hits and fine-dining restaurants featuring some of the world’s famous chefs. The 4.4 billion dollar Resorts World Sentosa, built by Malaysia’s Genting Group, opened in February. It boasts Southeast Asia’s only Universal Studios theme park, among other attractions. The 5.5 billion dollar Marina Bay Sands, owned by Las Vegas Sands, started operations in April. Revenue figures from the two Singapore casinos paint an upbeat picture. Resorts World Sentosa said it generated revenues of 636.5 million dollars in the three months to June. Net profit came in at almost 300 million dollars for the quarter. The Universal Studios theme park has attracted about 8,000 visitors a day and hotel occupancy rates are an estimated 70 percent. Marina Bay Sands declared net revenues of 216 million dollars in just its first 65 days of operation, with the casino accounting for 191 million dollars. Las Vegas Sands chief executive Sheldon Adelson said he was “gratified by the overwhelming reception the property has received”. Galaviz, the gaming consultant, said Singapore’s total gross gaming revenue should reach 2.7 billion dollars this year, rising to 3.0 billion dollars in 2011. But he said this is unlikely to reach the levels in Las Vegas and Macau “if Singapore’s market just remains at two casinos at their current size”. Macau took in 14.5 billion dollars from gamblers in 2009, while casinos at the Las Vegas strip earned about 5.5 billion dollars. Aaron Fischer, head of Asia consumer gaming at CLSA, estimates Singapore gaming revenues will rise to 5.1 billion dollars in 2011 and 6.5 billion dollars in 2012 from 3.0 billion dollars this year.

Paris Hilton arrested for cocaine possession LOS ANGELES - US socialite and paparazzi darling Paris Hilton was arrested in Las Vegas on charges of cocaine possession, but released shortly afterwards, local police said Saturday. “Police stopped a black Cadillac Escalade outside the Wynn Hotel about 11:30 pm Friday, because officers believed someone inside was smoking pot, and officers found an unspecified amount of cocaine in a purse of Ms Hilton’s,” Las Vegas police spokesman Marcus Martin told AFP. She was arrested on cocaine possession charges. Hilton’s spokeswoman Dawn Miller did not respond to questions for comment. Her lawyer, David Chernoff, said Hilton was released early Saturday. “This matter will be dealt with in the courts not in the media and I encourage people not to rush to judgment until all of the facts have been dealt with in a court of law,” he said in a statement. Citing sources close to the socialite, entertainment website
TMZ.com reported that Hilton plans to argue that the purse in which police found the cocaine did not belong to her. It has been an eventful few months for Hilton, 29, who was briefly detained by police in July on the French island of Corsica after being caught with less than a gram (.04 ounces) of cannabis in her handbag. Hilton was also arrested during the World Cup in South Africa after a friend who accompanied her took a joint to the Brazil-Netherlands quarterfinal match in Port Elizabeth. She also hit the headlines last week after a 31-yearold intruder, reportedly armed with a knife, tried to break into her Hollywood home, allegedly hoping to hoping to rob the wealthy heiress. The producers hope the move will attract a younger audience that up to now has largely shrugged off award shows as too stuffy and oldage.

ROME - Two American tourists, kitted out in glinting helmets and handsome tunics, grapple with each other, swords clanging, as if their very lives depend on it. “We thought we would take a break from cultural touring and walking around,” said Chris Coffman, 43, visiting from Pennsylvania with his family and some friends, adding that they learned about the course on the Internet. Just a stone’s throw from the Colosseum, on the ancient Appian Way leading from the Eternal City to Brindisi, they boarded the time machine of the Rome Historical Group (GSR, www.gsr-roma.com/english/ gladiatori/htm/scuola.html) and whiled away an entire afternoon in the Rome of 2,000 years ago. “What we are doing here is experimental archaeology,” said their instructor, who goes by the artistic name of Hermes, between two especially strenuous exercises. “The teaching consists of experiencing all the sensations of a Roman of the time.” Like the 140 other members of the association of history buffs, Hermes — who sells real estate during the week — became a gladiator trainer because of his “passion for Rome. Being Roman doesn’t just mean living in Rome but making ‘Rome’ live,” he said. The course can cost up to 100 euros (120 dollars) per person for two hours, but slides down to 25 euros for groups of at least 10. The 2000 Hollywood film “Gladi-

Khoo, lead curator of Singapore’s pavilion at the Venice architectural Biennale, opens his argument with some startling figures to demonstrate the compactness of the tiny island state off the Malaysian peninsula. It is planning for a maximum population of 6.5 million in 20 years, which is 1,000th of the current world total of 6.5 billion. Yet 1,000 times the land area of Singapore would occupy only 0.5 percent of the total world land mass, equivalent to about twice the size of Italy, Khoo said. Maps at the exhibit shrink China and the United States to the tiny spaces they would occupy if they had the same density as Singapore, which has a land area of just 710 square kilometres (275 square miles). The exhibition titled “1,000 Singapores: A Model of a Com-
pact City” stresses the advantages of compactness such as minimising energy consumption, streamlining transportation and reducing the carbon footprint. “Architecture, social systems, transport systems, waste management and so on are working hand in hand in a meta-project,” Khoo told AFP, describing Singapore’s evolution as a “very slow process of self-invention, as an island, a country, a city.” One of the world’s richest cities and widely acclaimed as among the most “liveable”, Singapore has avoided the congested feeling of places like Hong Kong and Tokyo until recent years. Increasing numbers of immigrants and guest workers jostle for space with the locals, and tourism is surging thanks to two new massive casino resorts that opened a few months ago.

Capello reveals call to Beckham over England axe Agence France-Presse
LONDON – David Beckham has received a personal phone call from England manager Fabio Capello to explain why he controversially ended the midfielder’s international career without telling him first.

Beckham was said to be aghast when Capello announced in a televised interview ahead of a friendly fixture against Hungary earlier this month that the England legend would no longer be considered for selection because he is too old. The news came as Beckham was recovering from an Achilles injury that had ruled him out of thee World Cup and despite constant assertions from the LA Galaxy star that he has no intention of retiring from international football. Capello later claimed Beckham, who has 115 caps for England and is just 10 short of record holder Peter Shilton, would be allowed one last farewell appearance in a friendly at Wembley to say goodbye. But after the Italian received intense criticism for the way he handled the announcement, being accused of showing a lack of respect for Beckham, he has finally opted to make contact with the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star. Capello said: “I spoke honestly with a journalist in the TV interview. The question was ‘what do you think about David’. What was I meant to do?
Say ‘wait, I have to stop and phone Beckham’? “But immediately after the interview Franco Baldini spoke with David to tell him what had happened. “Since then I spoke directly with David on the telephone and I explained what really happened - and the relationship is really good. “I spoke with David because he was part of the staff at the World Cup. I usually don’t speak on the phone with the players, in my career I never did this.” Capello appeared uncomfortable when repeatedly asked if Beckham would ever play for England again, perhaps aware that an unequivocal no would cause him yet more bad publicity. But he made it clear that while the door is not completely closed on the LA Galaxy man, he is no longer in England’s immediate plans. Capello said: “First, he has to be back to play. We are monitoring all the players but I think the future is for the young players - because we have to think about the Euros. “For all the players, the door is open always. But now I think about the young players. They need to play more
games, get more experience. “Some players it will be difficult to choose another time because of their age. I have to prepare the youth. In 2012 Beckham will be 36.” It was always going to be a difficult road back to the England team for Beckham, no matter how Capello’s side performed in South Africa. He had maintained his place in the squad only by leaving Los Angeles to play on loan with AC Milan in Serie A for the last two seasons - and at present there is no sign of a return to Europe. Beckham always knew that if he stayed in America, where his family are said to be settled and happy, his international career would inevitably be curtailed and it now appears unlikely he will achieve his dream of becoming England’s most-capped player. Capello did hint at a possible future in coaching for Beckham, even though the player has always insisted that becoming a manager does not interest him. The Italian said: “He has big experience. He knows different styles, he knows Spanish, Italian, English. Probably he knows a lot of different things so I think he can do it.”

NEW YORK – The line judge who called a foot fault on Serena Williams that sent the star into a tirade during last year’s U.S. Open semifinals will be officiating at this year’s tournament. In a statement issued to The Associated Press on Saturday, tournament organizers said Shino Tsurubuchi “is a world class official and we are confident in her abilities.” The statement continued: “Consistent with U.S. Open officiating assignments, Ms. Tsurubuchi will officiate in both men’s and women’s matches, and will rotate through the various on-court officiating positions.” Williams, who leads active women with 13 Grand Slam singles titles, withdrew last week from this year’s U.S. Open, which begins Monday. She said she is not completely recovered from July 15 surgery to repair cuts on her right foot. Tsurubuchi was working the baseline late in the 2009 U.S. Open semifinal between then-defending champion Williams and Kim Clijsters. Tsurubuchi called a foot fault on a second serve by Williams, resulting in a double-fault that moved Clijsters one point from victory. The ruling prompted a profanity-laced, racketbrandishing, finger-pointing tirade by Williams, who approached Tsurubuchi with what tournament director Jim Curley called at the time “a threatening manner.” Williams earlier had been give a code violation warning when she broke her racket after losing the first set. Margarito gets Texas license, fight with Pacquiao Former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito was approved to fight in Texas on Thursday, which clears the way for a potentially lucrative fight against pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao at the opulent Cowboys Stadium in November. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation received an application from Margarito on Monday and decided Thursday to grant his request. The decision came after Margarito was denied an application to fight in California and had another application tabled in Nevada. Margarito is expected to face Pacquiao for a vacant junior middleweight title on Nov. 13. “I want to thank the state of Texas for granting me a boxing license, which enables me to continue my passion for the sport of boxing in the United States,” Margarito said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. “I have dedicated my life to giving the fans of the sport entertainment and excitement. On Nov. 13, this great opportunity will ultimately be fulfilled.” Margarito hasn’t fought in the United States since January 2009, when a plaster-like substance was found in his hand wraps before a fight against Shane Mosley in Los Angeles. Margarito’s license along with that of his former trainer, Javier Capetillo, were revoked for at least one year by the California State Athletic Commission, a decision that was upheld by other states. The “Tijuana Tornado” honored the revocation, even though he denied knowing anything about the illegal hand wraps. He could have fought outside the U.S. during his yearlong suspension, but didn’t return to the ring until May 8, about 16 months after his fight against Mosley. Moving up to junior middleweight, Margarito coasted to a win over Roberto Garcia in Mexico. It was never a sure thing that Margarito would be licensed in Texas, and promoter Top Rank had discussed contingency plans that included taking the fight to Mexico or Dubai. Officials in Texas examined numerous documents relating to the case, including the initial revocation of Margarito’s license in California, transcripts from his hearing, his subsequent application from earlier this month, and a letter from the Association of Boxing Commissions to members instructing them to make
their own decision on whether to issue him a license. “After a thorough review of his application it was determined Mr. Margarito met the requirements of the Texas Combative Sports Act and Rules,” Executive Director William Kuntz said in a statement posted on the department’s website. “Based on the review of the above information, I have authorized the issuance of a license to Mr. Margarito.” The decision was important not only to those involved in the fight, but also to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, his year-old stadium and the state of Texas. Any fight involving Pacquiao means big business for the host, including massive crowds and hundreds of thousands of pay-per-view purchases. Pacquiao drew 51,000 fans to Cowboys Stadium in March, despite facing the relatively unknown Joshua Clottey. Jones said he’s already been in touch with Top Rank and, although there are still some details to work out, most of the major points involved in the fight have been agreed upon. “We have a few things to work out, then we’ll have an announcement — soon, certainly within days,” Jones told the AP. “It was worth the wait. I’m pleased that we’re in the position we are.” Fans had been hoping to see Pacquiao face Floyd Mayweather Jr. this fall in what could have been the richest fight in the sport’s history. However, Mayweather has refused to a sign a contract to face the popular Filipino champion and Pacquiao was forced to look elsewhere for a fight, finally settling on Margarito — both fighters are promoted by Top Rank. The choice has drawn the ire of many fans who don’t believe that Margarito should not receive the lucrative payday after what has transpired over the past 18 months. Still, Margarito remains wildly popular in Mexico and the matchup should outdraw the last crowd at Cowboys Stadium. “This is a good one because we know Margarito — with our fan base, in our area — if we do the fight, then it’ll be a big draw,” Jones said.

LONDON – Carlo Ancelotti admitted Frank Lampard’s hernia injury had taken the shine off Chelsea’s perfect start to their defence of the Premier League title. Ancelotti’s side recorded a third successive victory on Saturday as a first half goal from Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba’s 77th minute penalty secured a 2-0 success against Stoke at Stamford Bridge. The champions go into the international break on top of the table after scoring 14 goals and conceding none in their opening three games of the season. But Ancelotti couldn’t be completely satisfied as he waits nervously to discover if England midfielder Lampard has a successful hernia operation next week. Lampard will miss England opening Euro 2012 qualifying games against Bulgaria and Switzerland after aggravating the problem on Saturday. He was substituted with 18 minutes remaining, having earlier failed to convert a 10th-minute penalty. “He has a problem with a hernia,” Ancelotti said. “He had surgery on it 10 years ago and this week wasn’t very good. “And in the game he didn’t feel very good again so I think this week the only solution is to have

Begovic was back in the Stoke squad after refusing to play in a midweek League Cup game. And Pulis added: “The problem with that is 90 percent of that has been stirred up by faceless people behind the scenes. It goes on and I know that. “I’m not naive to say it doesn’t. And obviously the fact he said what he did was disappointing. But we’ll do our absolute damnedest to keep Begovic at Stoke City.”

Portugal midfielder Meireles joins Liverpool Agence France-Presse
LIVERPOOL – Liverpool have acted quickly to fill the void left by the departure of Javier Mascherano and Alberto Aquilani, announcing on Sunday the capture of Porto’s Raul Meireles. The 27-year-old midfielder has joined Roy Hodgson’s side on a 14 million euro, four-year deal, a statement on Liverpool’s official website reported. His arrival at Anfield follow’s Mascherano’s transfer to Barcelona and Aquilani’s loan move to Juventus. Meireles, quoted in The Sunday Express, said: “Roy Hodgson was AFP/File – Portugal’s Raul key to me coming here because he worked so hard to sign me. Meireles “I am Meireles and not Mascherano and that will be clear to the fans.
