JEMBRANA - A number of Bali Starlings which are observed at Karangsewu, Gilimanuk, have disappeared again lately. Allegedly, those protected birds in the West Bali National Park (TNBB) fear to nest at Karangsewu because of bustling human activities. Previously, the distribution of Bali Starling after being reintroduced from their breeding has reached the Gulf of Gilimanuk. The residents precisely found the birds in mangrove forest at Karangsewu and since then they were monitored by the officers of TNBB. Lately, the birds vanished again and were alleged to go back into the forest on the peninsula of Prapat Agung.

“About two months ago, the Bali Starlings were indeed seen, but later on they were no longer here (Karangsewu—Ed). Probably, they were afraid of seeing many people,” explained Sukaji, 50, a resident of Karangsewu, Gilimanuk. Though the Karangsewu remains to belong to the TNBB area, it is also often used for recreation site by local people. Allegedly, the

motorcycles and cars coming into location near the nest of Bali Starling have caused them to be unwilling to go back to Karangsewu. Since the bird bearing the Latin name Leucopsar rothschildi is protected, it is almost never seen again at Gilimanuk. Therefore, the discovery of Bali Starling at Karangsewu is an encouraging progress over the past 10 years.

Local residents with the TNBB officers keep watch and maintain the breeding of the birds. Unfortunately, their existence cannot last longer and disappears again from the monitoring. When being discovered some time ago, those birds did not wear bracelet. In other words, they were not the birds originating from the reintroduction, but the result of wild breeding in the TNBB. The Section Head of Region III TNBB, Seno Pramudita, when asked for his confirmation on Sunday (Oct 28) justified if the Bali Starling was no longer seen at

The birds could only survive there for about 1-2 months because the area had been already touched by human. “Well, they may now have come into the area around the Prapat Agung Peninsula,” he explained. Karangsewu which belongs to the territory of TNBB is also used as a utilization area. According to Seno, at the moment hundreds of Bali Starlings lived in West Bali. BANGLI - The Nangluk Merana ritual aiming to preserve the balance of nature as well as to ask for the welfare of all the people in the world was organized in the Ulun Danu Batur Temple, Batur customary village, Kintamani, on Sunday (Oct 28). Although this activity was an annual ritual, its implementation was quite special because it coincided with the great full moon in the fifth month of Balinese calendar so that it applied the ritual paraphernalia in the form of buffalo. When met amidst officiating over the entire ritual procession, Jero Gede Batur Alitan suggested that other than aiming to plead for safety of all the people, the ritual was also intended to plead the Ulun Danu Batur deity in order all the people in the world were freed from any disaster, whether caused by nature or human acts. “We’re not just asking so that farmers could be bestowed with abundant water supply and maximum crops and kept away from pests and diseases, but also invoking so that mankind is freed from any conflicts,” he hoped. Considering the importance of nangluk merana ritual, his party expected that all subak organizations in Bali could say prayers as long as the deities were abiding until next Wednesday (Oct 31). Procession of the nangluk merana ritual in the Ulun Danu Batur was commenced on Monday (Oct 22) comprising the activities like neteg, nyuci, nanceb sunari and makarya sanganan. Meanwhile, on Sunday (Oct 28), the ritual procession was filled with neteg bagia pulakerti, melaspas bagia pulakerti, pepada wewalungan and resumed with the temple anniversary. SINGARAJA - Aside from being accidentally cleared, the disturbing growth of mangrove forest at Pejarakan village, Gerokgak subdistrict, is in fact caused by local residents. To prevent the more serious condition, the government is asked to assist local farmers to produce artificial fodder. Sustainability condition at risk makes the tourism of Pejarakan village apprehensive. Some businessmen claim to frequently see the behavioral acts of people where they are coming into the mangrove forest freely. No officials ever prohibit the people from going into the forest whereas they often clear the twigs of mangrove to be made into fodder for their cows and goats. As the mangrove plants are often disturbed, their growth is disrupted. Even, many mangrove plants die because their leaves and twigs have been cleared for fodder. “The growth of mangrove in this forest is slow. Many plants die as their leaves or twigs are cleared for fodder,” said a foreigner who opened

a tourism business at Darma Garuda hamlet, Pejarakan village, Gerokgak subdistrict. According to him, the damage due to being cleared by residents for fodder could be overcome if the government was serious about protecting the mangrove forests. The government could provide assistance to produce artificial fodder, so that people would not have to clear the leaves or twigs of mangrove forest. “If possible, the government can provide local people with the assistance to produce artificial fodder, so that they will no longer clear the mangrove,” he explained. Meanwhile, Chairman of Commission B of the Buleleng House, Putu Mangku Budiasa, asserted that his

party positively appreciated the entrepreneur who paid attention to the preservation of mangrove forest. However, the suggestion for the government to help residents make artificial fodder could not be realized individually. If the community established a group, the government could help them through technical institution. Even, other than helping produce artificial fodder, the government could also provide other helps such as in the form of calf and goatling. “Please establish a group of local residents and then submit a proposal of assistance. We in the House will encourage the needs of the group as long as it is intended for the common interest,” he affirmed. (kmb)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PARIS - History is coming full circle: borrowed from the Aztecs four centuries ago, perfected for the palate by the Europeans, chocolate is conquering new worlds, with sales booming from Asia to Brazil. Every second, 95 tonnes of chocolate are wolfed down around the world, or three million tonnes a year, according to figures supplied by the annual Salon du Chocolat fair, which kicks off Wednesday in Paris. The globalisation of chocolate is most striking in Japan, where annual sales are soaring by 25 percent and French chocolatiers are feted like stars while their Japanese counterparts now rank among the world’s best. “Japan has converted en masse to chocolate in the past decade, with chocolate Salons in seven different cities,” said Francois Jeantet, cofounder of the Paris fair, which has spawned 21 sister events from New York to Shanghai. For the Salon’s annual fashion show featuring life-sized chocolate dresses, this year’s model is a kimono-inspired number created by

French chocolatier Frederic Cassel -- who has three stores in Japan. “We wanted to express Japanese tradition, cherry blossom in the wind,” in the long sleeves with chocolate flowers, said Cassel, who worked to a design by a young fashion student, Audrey Lempeseur. It was to be one of the largest collections of Broadway costumes in America. There were more than 500 boxes in all, newly purchased by Marilynn Wick to add to her multimillion dollar collection of costumes at Costume World which she rents to professional theatres and high school productions. But it sold for more than $3 million, Kimberly Wick says. For many of the shows, the Wicks own multiple sets: the original Broadway costumes, the Broadway revivals and two or three that their own wardrobe company has recreated to rent out for school productions. DENPASAR - A Japanese modern chain store is alleged to expand to Denpasar area. One of them is located in the area of Jalan Tukad Pakerisan, Denpasar. As a matter of fact, the Denpasar Municipality has commitment to no longer issue any permit for modern stores other than 295 stores that have operated today. When contacted on Sunday (Oct 28), the Head of Denpasar Licensing Office, AA Ray Soryawan, did not deny that his party had received information regarding the existence of modern chain store from Japan, Lawson. In response to that information, his party had made coordination with the civilian security guard and public order officer. “I’ve also received the information. A number of civilian guards were assigned to perform field monitoring a few days ago,” he said. According to Ray Soryawan, the store had not been operated. He said the operation of the chain store was actually selling fast food. If the store would later on want to open a business in Denpasar, his party would lead it to submit a restaurant permit because the permit for modern store had been stopped. “We refer to the Mayoral Decree No. 188.45/495/HK/2011 that only gives permit to the 295 modern stores that have been in operation

in Denpasar,” he said. He added the presence of 295 operating modern stores would also be evaluated within the period of five years. Later, there would be a permanent permit and short-term permit only prevailing for five years. Hopefully, the modern store employers complied with the regulations, whether it was a chain store or not. “We also hope the central government will not issue any regulations going up against the local bylaws or regulations. Until this week, we have not received any permit application from the Lawson management,” he said. When contacted separately, the Head of Civilian Security Guard and Public Order Officer of Denpasar, I Nyoman Puja, said there were at least four outlets of Lawson in the form of cafes that had been operating and selling food, such as the one on Jalan Raya Sesetan, Jalan Diponegoro, Jalan Waturenggong and Jalan Tukad Pakerisan. Navy to intensify patrols ahead of BDF

DENPASAR - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) will step up its patrols in the waters off Bali prior to the Bali Democracy Forum (BDF), which will be held from November 8 to 9, according to the commander of the Denpasar naval base, Col I Wayan Suarjaya. “Although BDF is an annual event, we will intensify our patrols throughout the waters, particularly in several points considered vulnerable to security disturbances,” he said.

TOKYO — Honda’s quarterly profit surged 36 percent as Japanese automakers bounced back from last year’s tsunami disaster in northeastern Japan, but the company lowered its annual forecasts Monday because of a sales plunge in China. Honda Motor Co. raked in an 82.2 billion yen ($1 billion) net profit for the July-September quarter. Sales jumped 20 percent to 2.27 trillion yen. Honda has recovered strongly after being hit hard by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster that disrupted car production, and the floods in Thailand later that year. But the Tokyo-based manufacturer of the Accord sedan, Fit compact and Asimo humanoid robot lowered its forecasts for the business year through March 2013. It cited the recent sales drop in China sparked by a territorial dispute that has set off violent protests in parts of China and a call to boycott Japanese goods. It now expects to sell 4.1 million vehicles in the year through March 2013, down about 180,000 from the earlier projection to sell 4.3 million vehicles. Still, that number is an improvement of more than a million vehicles over the 3.1 million Honda sold globally in the previous disaster-struck year. Honda sold 996,000 vehicles during the fiscal second quarter, up from 678,000 vehicles a year earlier. Honda said it must factor in the “recent situation in China,” as well as declining sales in Europe and South America, in forecasts for the full year. The negative effect of an unfavorable currency is also expected to weigh, Honda said. A strong yen hurts the earnings of Japanese exporters such as Honda. The dollar did not change that much against the yen in the second quarter, but the yen surged against the euro. Honda now expects a 375 billion yen ($4.7 billion) net profit for the full fiscal year, sharply lower than the initial forecast for a 470 billion yen ($5.9 billion) profit. But even the new forecast will represent a 78 percent rebound from the 211.4 billion yen profit recorded in the previous year. The company lowered its full year sales forecast to 9.8 trillion yen ($122 billion) from 10.3 trillion yen ($129 billion). Compared with the previous year, sales are now forecast to rise 23 percent.

DEPOK — When a 14-year-old girl received a Facebook friend request from an older man she didn’t know, she accepted it out of curiosity. It’s a click she will forever regret, leading to a brutal story that has repeated itself as sexual predators find new ways to exploit Indonesia’s growing obsession with social media. The junior high student was quickly smitten by the man’s smooth online flattery. They exchanged phone numbers, and his attention increased with rapidfire texts. He convinced her to meet in a mall, and she found him just as charming in person. They agreed to meet again. After telling her mom she was going to visit a sick girlfriend on her way to church choir practice, she climbed into the man’s minivan near her home in Depok, on the outskirts of Jakarta. The man, a 24-year-old who called himself Yogi, drove her an hour to the town of Bogor, West Java, she told The Associated Press in an interview. There, he locked her in a small room inside a house with at least five other girls aged 14 to 17. She was drugged and raped repeatedly — losing her virginity in the first violent session. After one week of torture, her captor told her she was being sold and shipped to the faraway island of Batam, known for its seedy brothels and child sex tourism that caters to men coming by boat from nearby Singapore. So far this year, 27 of the 129 children reported missing to Indonesia’s National Commission for Child Protection are believed to have been abducted after meeting their captors on Facebook, said the group’s chairman, Arist Merdeka Sirait. One of those befriended on the social media site has been found dead. In the month since the Depok girl was found near a bus terminal Sept. 30, there have been at least seven reports of young girls in Indonesia being abducted by people they met on Facebook. Although no solid data exists, police and aid groups that work on trafficking issues say it seems to be a particularly big problem in the Southeast Asian archipelago. “Maybe Indonesia is kind of a unique country so far. Once the reports start coming in, you will know that maybe it’s not one of the countries, maybe it’s one of a hundred countries,” said An-

jan Bose, a program officer who works on child online protection issues at ECPAT International, a nonprofit global network that helps children in 70 countries. “The Internet is such a global medium. It doesn’t differentiate between poor and rich. It doesn’t differentiate between the economy of the country or the culture.” Websites that track social media say Indonesia has nearly 50 million people signed up for Facebook, making it one of the world’s top users after the U.S. The capital, Jakarta, was recently named the most active Twitter city by Paris-based social media monitoring company Semiocast. In addition, networking groups such as BlackBerry and Yahoo Messenger are wildly popular on mobile phones. Many young Indonesians, and their parents, are unaware of the dangers of allowing strangers to see their personal information online. Teenagers frequently post photos and personal details such as their home address, phone number, school and hangouts without using any privacy settings — allowing anyone trolling the net to find them and learn everything about them. “We are racing against time, and the technology frenzy over Facebook is a trend among teenagers here,” Sirait said. “Police should move faster, or many more girls will become victims.” The 27 Facebook-related abductions reported to the commission this year in Indonesia have already exceed 18 similar cases it received in all of 2011. Overall, the National Task Force Against Human Trafficking said 435 children were trafficked last year, mostly for sexual exploitation. Many who fight child sex crimes in Indonesia believe the real numbers are much higher. Missing children are often not reported to authorities. Stigma and shame surround sexual abuse in the world’s largest Muslimmajority country, and there’s a widespread belief that police will do nothing to help.

Leading 6-5, Del Potro had a glimmer of victory in the 12th game as he led 30-15 but Federer reeled off three aces in a row to send the set to another tiebreak.

Two-time defending Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull has quashed rumors he has signed a deal with Ferrari, seeking to reassure team members who see fresh reports he is preparing to join the Italian team. “You don’t know every single one in the team and it is hard to speak to each of them, but if there is something published in the press, obviously there might be some concerns back in the factory,” Vettel told reporters

after winning the Indian Grand Prix on Sunday. “But I’m 100 per cent behind them, just as they are 100 per cent behind me. At the moment, there is nothing to report and I’m very happy with Red Bull racing.” Rumors of a Vettel move gained momentum earlier this month when Felipe Massa signed a one-year contract extension with Ferrari for 2013, raising speculation a big-name replacement was being teed up for the following year. Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg could find himself in hot water after Chelsea lodged an official complaint about him using “inappropriate language” to two of their players in a tumultuous 3-2 defeat by Manchester United on Sunday. Leaders Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season came to an end when Javier Hernandez scored a dubious-looking 75th minute winner for United after Clattenburg had shown red cards to Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres in quick succession in the final half hour. “We have lodged a complaint to the Premier League match delegate with regards to inappropriate language used by the referee and directed at two of our players in two separate incidents,” a club spokesman told reporters. “The match delegate will pass the complaint to the Football Association. We will make no further comment at this time.” The club would not name the players in question or of what nature the remarks were, but the spokesman refused to deny that John Obi Mikel had visited the referee’s room after the game. Mikel was booked for dissent during the second half. Clattenburg made no comment but the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMO), which manages top English referees, said in a statement reported by media that the allegations are “being treated with the utmost seriousness”. Clattenburg will co-operate fully and “welcomes the opportunity for the facts to be established,” it added.

LONDON - Javier Hernandez came off the bench to grab a controversial 3-2 victory for Manchester United at Premier League leaders Chelsea after the previously unbeaten hosts had been reduced to nine men in a tempestuous clash on Sunday. The Mexican goal-poacher, looking suspiciously offside, tucked in the winner in the 75th minute to kill off a vibrant Chelsea side who had battled back from 2-0 down before having Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres sent off by referee Mark Clattenburg in the final half an hour.
