LONDON — The Rolling Stones made a triumphant return to the London stage on Sunday night in the first of five concerts to mark the 50th anniversary of their debut as an American-oriented blues band. They showed no signs of wear and tear — except on their aging, heavily lined faces — as frontman Mick Jagger swaggered and strutted through a stellar two-anda-half hour show. He looked remarkably trim and fit and was in top vocal form. The Stones passed the half-century mark in style at the sometimes emotional gig that saw former bassist Bill Wyman and guitar master Mick Taylor join their old mates in front of a packed crowd at London’s 02 Arena. It was the first of five megashows to mark the passage of 50 years since the band first appeared in a small London pub determined to pay homage to the masters of American blues. Jagger, in skin-tight black pants, a black shirt and a sparkly tie, took time out from singing to thank the crowd for its loyalty. “It’s amazing that we’re still doing this, and it’s amazing that you’re still buying our records and coming to our shows,” he said. “Thank you, thank you,

thank you.” Lead guitarist Keith Richards, whose survival has surprised many who thought he would succumb to drugs and drink, was blunter: “We made it,” he said. “I’m happy to see you. I’m happy to see anybody.” But the band’s fiery music was no joke, fuelled by an incandescent guest appearance by Taylor, who played lead guitar on a stunning extended version of the ominous “Midnight Rambler,” and Mary J. Blige, who shook the house in a duet with Jagger on “Gimme Shelter.” The 50th anniversary show, which will be followed by one more in London, then three in the greater New York area, lacked some of the band’s

customary bravado — the “world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band” intro was shelved — and there were some rare nostalgic touches. Even the famously taciturn Wyman briefly cracked a smile when trading quips with Richards and Ronnie Wood. The concert started with a brief video tribute from luminaries like Elton John, Iggy Pop and Johnny Depp, who praised the Stones for their audacity and staying power. The Stones’ show contained an extended video homage to the American trailblazers who shaped their music: Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and others. The montage included rare footage of the young Elvis Presley.

Road access is the obstacle to the realization of the project spending a total budget of IDR 3.98 billion. As consequence, the bridge materials conveyed by vehicle cannot be dropped near the location. reached 92 percent. However, the contractor namely PT Kencana Rodo was unable to realize it on schedule. We sincerely hope this project can be completed on time. As a result, the asphalt surface was getting slippery. According to residents, they often encountered fish waste along the road leading to the Nusantara Fishery Harbor of Pengambengan. A cremation ‘ngaben’ was held by Banjar Ipil resident, Gadungan Vilalge, East Selemadeg, last Sunday (25/11) ends tragically. Slipped while preparing “malarung” (drifting) ashes of a family member, Putu Agus Ramawijaya (47) got dragged by the current of Yeh Ho River. He was found 3 hours later stuck on the rocks of the river gone cold. The incident happened while he was following a cremation ceremony of his aunt, Men Brata. Victim came in the midnight to join the ceremony and on

the ending of ceremony around 1 pm local time, a number of women came down to the river to prepare the “malarung” and start praying. Meanwhile, victim came down to wash his feet yet the rock he stood on was slippery and so he fell to the river. With the strong current and not able to swim, he disappears from the surface of the water. Victim did cry for help but no one was brave enough to help. According to his older sibling, Ketut Maharta Wijaya, his brother hardly went home due to working as a director of a bank in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. He went home to attend his aunt’s cremation. It was stated victim wanted to move to Bali for his work and get married next week. It is also known that the place where he fell was known to be a sensitive spot. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Apple Inc has asked a federal court to add six more products to its patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co, including the Samsung Galaxy Note II, in the latest in move in an ongoing legal war between the two companies. The case is one of two patent infringement lawsuits pending in the U.S. District Court in San Jose by Apple against Samsung. An earlier lawsuit by Apple that related to different patents resulted in a $1.05 billion jury verdict against Samsung on August 24. Apple is also seeking to add the Samsung Galaxy S III, running the new Android “Jelly Bean” operating system, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Wifi, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, the Samsung Rugby Pro,

and the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini, to its lawsuit, according to a court filing on Friday. “Apple has acted quickly and diligently to determine that these newly-released products do infringe many of the same claims already asserted by Apple,” the company said in the filing. Samsung representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Apple filed the second lawsuit in February, alleging that various Samsung smartphone and tablet products including the Galaxy Nexus infringed eight of its patents. Condition of the alternative road connecting the Buleleng Regency to southern Bali area, precisely at Pedawa village, Banjar subdistrict, has long been damaged but never gets improvement from local government. The road could not be passed through by vehicles. The road body was replete by potholes so that it was hazardous to safety of riders. A few riders got an accident while passing through the road. “This is entirely generated by the initiative of our residents seeing the road condition was badly damaged and made motorists difficult to pass. As a result, it frequently kindled traffic accidents,” he said. According to Drama, villagers were very enthusiastic in undertaking the roadwork. Even, the residents were willing to donate for the improvement. “We will continue the mutual assistance while waiting for the repairs from local government,” he explained. To be noted, the regency road at a number of old villages in Banjar subdistrict had been damaged since a few years ago. As a result, it was difficult for vehicles to pass and prone to accidents. The building material shop UD Sari Agung, Banjar Pasar, Pekutatan, last Sunday (25/11) morning got burnt. The fire that seemed to happen from a short circuit caused the two floor shop gone to ashes. According to witnesses, the fire sparked at 5 am local time, one of them was a Pekutatan Forestry Police officer, Ketut Puja, seeing smoke coming from inside the shop. Puja informed locals while shop owner A.A. Gede Anom (57) admitted not aware of the incident as he

was asleep at his bedroom located behind the shop. Anom, from Gianyar, was exhausted from visiting his relative and was woken up once before this due to dogs barking. After awaken, he saw smoke and the electricity in the shop is off. Anom opened the rolling door and there was fire, he and locals tried to turn it off using tap waters and water hose. Four fire brigades that came later couldn’t help much either as the fire got very big yet it managed to not affect surrounding houses. Due to the incident, the shop that

has been there since 1990 has gone to ashes causing estimated IDR 3 billion of rupiah loss including IDR 16 million cash and electronics. Head of Pekutatan Police, PC Komang Kardika, accompanied by Criminal Research Head, First Inspector Gusti Komang Sutina, stated the cause is still being investigated and a police line is still being placed around the location. They would be assigned to the 20 existing fleet. “Every fleet is supported by four personnel including a driver. Now, many candidates have submitted application, but most of them want a night shift because they work somewhere else during the day,” he said while adding that the current personnel alerted by the agency reached 660 people. For the second time in days, a leading Republican, this time Senator Lindsey Graham, edged toward violating something that had been sacrosanct -- a longstanding pledge signed by many in his party never to raise taxes. Strings were attached -- concessions by Democrats on social welfare programs like health care for the elderly. But his change of heart was a hopeful sign that the Republican leadership is ready to make tough choices in order to strike a deal. Both Republicans and Democrats are well aware of the need for the country to get its fiscal house in order, as America tries to rein in a huge debt that has been growing bigger by the day and reduce deficit spending. If no deal is reached before the end of the year, a poison pill law of tax hikes and massive spending cuts, including slashes to the

military, comes into effect with potentially catastrophic effects for the fragile US economy. After months of stalemate, congressional leaders met on November 16 with President Barack Obama -- who is deemed to have a considerably stronger negotiating hand after handily winning re-election 10 days earlier. Just five weeks now remain in the calendar year to conclude an agreement before the expiration of tax cuts put in place during the presidency of Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush. Obama has said that any deal he concludes would have to include an increase in taxes on wealthy taxpayers, something congressional Republicans so far have rejected. The plan he proposes -- and presented to voters on the campaign trail -- would raise the tax rate for top earners, but keep Bush-era tax

rates for individuals who make less than $200,000 per year and families earning less than $250,000. Republicans insist raising taxes on the wealthy would be counterproductive and only serve to slow economic growth and ensure that the country continues to be plagued by economic stagnation. They insist that higher taxes would dampen spending and hiring and investment by business owners. The top income tax rate, which now stands at 35 percent, will automatically revert to 39.6 percent at the beginning of 2013 unless there is a new budget deal. Republicans say they prefer to look at ways to bring in more tax revenue by completely overhauling the old and unwieldy US tax code, including closing what they say are “special interest loopholes” likely to hit the poor and the middle class as well as the rich.

BANDA ACEH - Korean private investors will increase their investments to build solar cell assembly plants in free trade zones and free ports in Sabang, Aceh Province. They will be investing as much as Rp120 billion. “I hope this investment changes the fate of the Aceh province,” said Zaini Abdullah, Governor of Aceh, during a meeting with the Korean private investors on Monday. Fauzi Husin, head of the Sabang Enterprising Board (BPKS), and the board of directors of Myrae Energy Co Ltd: Han Seung Sik, CEO, Yuu, Vice CEO and Lee Hyun Ok, General Manager also attended the meeting. Abdullah expressed hope that an assembly plant that looks into electrical energy production will supply electricity to the local people living in the area. “I hope that the joint effort by the

JAKARTA - The government’s plan to develop a “blue economy”, focusing on sustainable exploitation of Indonesia’s maritime potential, will create millions of jobs in the country, according to Marine and Fisheries Minister Sharif Cicip Sutardjo. “The blue economy-based development approach is in line with the four pillars of national economic development, namely pro-growth, pro-job, pro-poor, and pro-environment,” he said in a written statement on Monday. “In his book, `The Blue Economy’, Gunter Pauli from Belgium says the blue economy will likely create 100 million jobs through 100 innovations during the 2010-2020 decade,” Sharif noted. He stated that the marine and fisheries sector would play a stra-

tegic role in the improvement of people’s welfare. “It is the magnitude of economic potential in the sector that makes the Marine and Fisheries Ministry committed and determined to take the blue-economy approach for improving the people’s welfare,” Sharif explained. According to ministry data, the fisheries sector contributed 4.53 percent to the country¿s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2011. However, up to the third quarter of this year, the sector contributed 5.05 percent. The Indonesian economy is expected to grow at 6.85 percent this year, 7 percent next year, and 7.25 percent in 2014. Meanwhile, McKinsey Global Institute reported in September that Indonesia, the world’s 16th-largest economy, “is booming thanks largely to a combination of domes-

tic consumption and productivity growth.” According to the report, Indonesia could become the world’s seventh-largest economy, overtaking Germany and the United Kingdom, by 2030. “However, in order to meet its ambitious growth targets and attract international investment, the country must do more to overcome its chronic protectionism policy, complicated regulations, and grossly inadequate infrastructure and transportation facilities, which are hampering its economic growth,” it pointed out. “Over the past 20 years, labour productivity improvements, largely from specific sectors rather than a general shift out of agriculture, have accounted for more than 60 percent of the country¿s economic growth,” the report added.

FIFA names Brazil’s World Cup mascot ‘Fuleco’

SAO PAULO - FIFA has named the mascot for the 2014 Brazil World Cup “Fuleco,” a word which organisers say transmits a message of environmental awareness. Almost half of the more than 1.7 million people who voted in an online poll chose Fuleco ahead of ‘Zuzeco’ and ‘Amijubi’. The mascot is a three-banded armadillo, which is an endangered species in Brazil. The tradition of a World Cup mascot dates back to 1966, when a lion named ‘World Cup Willie’ was chosen for the tournament in England. Since then, the mascots have ranged from two German boys “Tip and Tap” in 1974, to “Pique” the chili pepper in Mexico in 1986, and “Zakumi” the leopard, who represented the tournament in South Africa in 2010. The yellow and blue armadillo was chosen in September and huge inflatable versions were se t up in Brazil’s 12 host cities. However, authorities were forced to take them down or increase security in at least three cities after vandals attacked them. Fuleco is expected to make an appearance in Sao Paulo this week at the draw for the 2013 Confederations Cup. The draw for the World Cup warm-up competition takes place next Saturday. PARIS - Joey Barton could have been sent off on his Ligue 1 debut but the controversial English midfielder also showed a cool head as his new team Olympique Marseille beat Lille 1-0 on Sunday. Barton, suspended by the English FA after being sent off for violent conduct in QPR’s final Premier League match of last season against Manchester City, made a low-key start as his team struggled to cope with Lille’s midfield domination. But his first serious tackle earned a yellow card as he stamped on Balmont’s ankle, a foul that could easily have drawn a straight red. It was Balmont, however, who was sent off on the stroke of halftime and Barton wisely stayed out of the ensuing brawl after referee Laurent Duhamel brandished his card. Barton arrived in France on loan from QPR following a colourful career in England during which he spent two and a half months in prison for assault during a night out in Liverpool. At the time of the attack, he was already on bail for attacking former Manchester City team mate Ousmane Dabo and he also stubbed out a cigar in the eye of a youth-team player at the club in 2004. Barton covered almost 10 kilometres during the match against Lille and even tried to calm down his team mates in the second half when a heated exchange took place between opposing players. The 30-year-old Barton, who had played for Marseille in the Europa League, did a decent job in bringing the ball forward and went close to doubling Marseille’s tally in the 68th minute when his 25-metre strike flew just wide. The Marseille fans chanted his name and some stood up when he was replaced by Loic Remy in the 74th minute to a round of applause. “I’m happy. It takes a little bit of time to be a hundred per cent fit,” Barton, who added a few words in French, told French TV channel Canal Plus.

Hampered by road access

Manduang-Aan bridge project delays Semarapura (Bali Post)—

Completion of the bridge project along 50 meters connecting Manduang village to Aan village over the Jinah River delays almost 70 percent. Realization in the field does not surpass 22 percent since it has been worked on from July 5. Actually, the project should have been accomplished next December 25. Road access is the obstacle to the realization of the project spending a total budget of IDR 3.98 billion. As consequence, the bridge materials conveyed by vehicle cannot be dropped near the location. From observation of Bali Post on Sunday (Nov 25), the materials were scattered along the path to project location. A foreman named Kariman encountered at the location said the road access to location was narrow, so the bridge materials made of steel were dropped around 800 meters from the project location. Kariman admitted it was quite difficult to carry the materials to location. Headman of Aan, Banjarangkan, Klungkung, AA Rai Ardika, said at the location last Sunday that the road access was indeed a constraint for the 10 workers to bring the materials to location. Ardika explained that in the third week of November the project realization should have

reached 92 percent. However, the contractor namely PT Kencana Rodo was unable to realize it on schedule. Rai Ardika claimed to have met the officer of the PT Kencana Rodo, Ketut Patuh Antara, on Friday (Nov 23) and questioned why the project realization delayed. “It is said the material has just reached 60 percent. We sincerely hope this project can be completed on time. At the moment, the streams of Jinah River are very swift so that when the residents of Aan would like to go to Manduang or otherwise, they should turn about 10 kilometers,” he said.
