DENPASAR - After the arrest of the suspected terrorists and pacification of some bombs in Solo last Saturday, the ranks of Bali Police took action to anticipate the entry of other perpetrators to Bali. The security at the entrance to the Island of the Gods was enhanced. It was revealed by Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hariadi, when asked for his confirmation on Saturday (Sep 22). Hariadi explained that Chief of Bali Police, Budi Gunawan, had instructed all levels of Regency Police throughout Bali to increase the security in their respective region. The most important was to intensify the custody, surveillance and inspection at the entrances to Bali such as at the harbor of Gilimanuk and Padangbai, Ngurah Rai Airport as well as several entrances denoting traditional ports. Besides, it was also asked to improve the vigorous patrolling, population data collection and vehicle inspections. In order to counteract the entry of radical groups to Bali, his party teamed up with all relevant agencies, including the Balinese community. In other words, police department continued to coordinate with the entire community. “If there is a suspicious person, they are expected to immediately report it to nearest police station,” he said. former Australian prime ministers, the chief of the Australian federal police, 60 senior government officials, politicians and staff members of the Australian embassy in Jakarta will also attend the event. The police will cooperate with the presidential guards to safeguard the Australian Prime Minister dur-
ing the visit according to the Very Very Important Person (VVIP) security arrangement, he said. He predicted that about 4,000 people, including relatives of the Bali bombing victims from Australia, Indonesia and other countries will also attend the commemoration.

Mobilization of trailer trucks from Java to Bali has caused congestion at a number of road sections on the Island of the Gods. The congestion occurring along the route of Gilimanuk-Tabanan to Denpasar is the result of hundreds of vehicles passing each day on the crowded path. According to the Secretary of the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) of Bali, Putu Alit Suthanaya, Ph.D., a large number of trailers taking advantage of the overland route was due to high cost of sea transport. Exporters and importers preferred to choose overland route because it was cheaper and faster. “We cannot blame if the trailer trucks coming to Bali prefer the overland to sea transport that ultimately results in congestion. Government should make a policy that reduces the cost of sea transport. By doing so, the government can require the trailer trucks to take sea transport to minimize congestion,� said Alit Suthanaya in Denpasar on Friday (Sep 21). So far, the government, said Alit Suthanaya, did not provide a solution for users of truck trailer. Actually, if the condition persisted it would have a negative
spiral impact where the overland freight transport would double. As consequence, the density of overland transport would be getting more severe if the road condition remained as at present. Crowded overland trailers would cause congestion in Bali more serious and road access easily damaged, so that it would drain the regional budget of Bali. “Actually, trailer trucks to Bali are not allowed to take overland route because it exceeds the road capacity. But so far, there is no solution so that they will prefer the overland as long as no alternative is provided by the government such as the solution to reduce the cost by sea transport,� he said. Aside from encouraging the use of sea transport, Alit Sutanaya also suggested the government to set up the mobility schedule of trailer trucks to Bali. This kind of large tonnage vehicles should
be driven to utilize the overland beyond working hours. “All this time, the entry of trailer trucks to Bali coincides with working hours, so that it FDXVHG WUDIÂżF MDPV 7KH\ VKRXOG use the time to pass beyond working hours, namely at night,â€? he said. Chairman of the Tourism Industry Association of Indonesia (GIPI) of Bali, Ngurah Wijaya, previously argued that tourism line should not be combined with the economic line. If they are both put together, they would then be disturbed. “At this time, containers from Java to Bali or vice versa are transported through overland route. Meanwhile, the roads in Bali are small. If they are not organized then our tourism will suffer. This should get attention from the government as regulator,â€? he said. A large number of contain-

He compared to the warehouse in a number of countries. “Warehouses should be built at harbor area, but in Bali they scatter in the city. This hand over were witnessed by Vice Governor of Bali AA Puspayoga and Jembrana Regent I Putu Artha. During the ceremony, Karti who owned the house can’t hide his happiness because he and his family can live in a better house. Before, according to Karti, his house that has been built on 1960 only has one room. But, now, after refurbishment, the house has three rooms, including one bathroom. “I feel grateful and would like to say thank you to Vice Governor of Bali AA Puspayoga and Bali TV. I also like to express my thanks to Jembrana Regent, I Putu Artha,” he said. Beside Karti, the refurbishment also went to Buleleng. In there, Made Katon, 65, the poor at Kububatu hamlet, Jagaraga village, Sawan subdistrict, got successive VXUSULVHV 7KH ¿UVW VXUSULVH ZDV KH suddenly visited by Deputy Governor of Bali, AA Ngurah Puspayoga. Another surprise was that his uninhabitable shack was immediately dismantled by Deputy Governor

He rushed to go home and sat on a rock in front of his house with his wife. A few minutes later, Deputy Governor Puspayoga came with Chairman of the Buleleng House, Dewa Nyoman Sukrawan. Besides, he was also visited by subdistrict head of Sawan, Gusti Ngurah Suradnyana, headman of Jagaraga Made Sumendra and chief of Jagaraga customary village, Nyoman Sura. Deputy Governor Puspayoga came to the home of Katon because on Friday (Sep 21) he read the news about the condition of Katon’s home that did not deserve to be called
a home. When making a visit to Buleleng, he immediately wanted to visit the home of Katon. As soon as arriving at the courtyard of Katon, Deputy Governor Puspayoga directly joined to sit on the rock while chatting leisurely. Deputy Governor considered the house of Katon was worth calling a shack. Other than being dirty, the small building was only surrounded by wall made of plaited bamboo. Moreover, it was already porous and some holes here and there were covered with a dull curtain. Just by looking at it, without surveys, without asking questions, without preceded with promises, Deputy Governor Puspayoga immediately decided to dismantle the house symbolically as a sign if the house was immediately replaced
with a new one through the BaliTV house refurbishment program. Together with Chairman of the Buleleng House, Dewa Sukrawan, Puspayoga immediately went into the house and opened a piece of plaited bamboo wall of Katon so far functioned as a door to the house. By dismantling it, within few days to come, the BaliTV house refurbishment team in collaboration with a number of donors would immediately begin the construction of a new home for Katon. Seeing the rapid decision of Vice Governor, Katon admitted to be nervous. He never expected to have a new home. He immediately thanked Vice Governor Puspayoga. “Thank you very much. I’m happy and unable to speak more words,” he said. Made Katon was indeed one of the Jagaraga residents living in a broken and inhabitable shack. In a dry and rocky garden, he had three buildings. and his wife slept. Another building was functioned as kitchen with more severe condition. Interestingly, the bottom side of the building resembled a security post sizing about 2 x 2 meters. It was covered by tarps where some parts of it had perforated. Made Katon said he had actually submitted to his fate since decades ago. He had four brothers whose fate was better as having a simple and more decent house to live in. From his parents, he inherited about 1,000 square meters of land. On the piece of rocky land he erected a shack. “The land cannot be cultivated because it’s dry and rocky,” he said. In daily life, Katon only worked as a farming laborer whose income could only be used for consumption needs. It was inadequate to build a house. The ďŹ sh cage farmers taking advantage of the lake water get the impact, too. Due to decline in the surface of lake water, their ďŹ sh harvest drops. Likewise, the ďŹ sh growth also slows down due to lack of water in the lake. Receding of the lake water has been going on since the past few months. As a result, the ďŹ sh cage used as medium of fish farming could be properly submerged. “Since the surface of the lake drops,
the ďŹ sh cage cannot be properly submerged. In effect, the growth of ďŹ sh is not normal,â€? said Darsa, a ďŹ sh breeder, Saturday (Sep 22). Due to lack of water, the ďŹ sh in the ďŹ sh cage could not move freely and
their growth was disturbed. Ideally, said Darsa, the ďŹ sh could freely reach for the water surface in order to grow. On that account, the ďŹ sh cage was usually placed amidst the water surface that was slightly deep. However, due to receding water of the lake, the previously deep surface was then turning shallower. Tilapia cultivated was unable to move freely. Such condition made ďŹ sh yields decline. The high market demand could not be met whereas the demand for lake fresh

Some did not accept what has been done by the ofďŹ cers yet after stated that these sellers have violated rules the sellers let the equipments taken and up to 10 am local time, no sellers were around the area. Yet up to the deadline, sellers are still there and not in the kiosks provided as some of them have rented it. Their reason to do it so was just because their items would be more sellable in the streets rather in the kiosks. A seller admitted this disciplinary won’t solve anything as after the disciplinary no ofďŹ cers were found around and so sellers would come back to the same location. DENPASAR - Having passed through eleven days of trial, the public transportation feeder of Sarbagita bus launched by Denpasar municipality received positive response from the community. As evidence, this new public transportation could carry 6,581 passengers. It was disclosed by Head of Denpasar Transportation Agency, I Gede Astika, accompanied by the Division Head of Overland Transport Services, I Dewa K. Adi Pradnyana, in Denpasar, Friday (Sep 21). Astika said that to support the existence of Sarbagita bus serving only the main corridor, his party had provided 56 units of public transport serving the feeder route. “In the early stages, we have four routes serving the area of South Denpasar,” he said. During the trial period, passengers who used the service were free of charge as subsidized by the Denpasar Municipality. The service was
a form of commitment to Denpasar Municipality to optimize the mass transportation. So far, this mode of public transportation was abandoned by the community. “So far, the public transport could not provide timely services, so that people tended to use private vehicles,” he said. Through this service, his party hoped that people could come back to the public transport. Moreover, the feeder route transport of Sarbagita would serve non-stop and keep going despite no passengers. “Vehicles serving the feeder route of Sarbagita may not stop at particular point until getting fully occupied. They must always move on each lane route,”
he said. Adi Pradnyana added that from monitoring all this time, the number of passengers using the services was increasing. On average it was used by about 839 people per day. “The feeder route of Sarbagita transport can be evaluated according to the existing needs,” he said. Currently, said Adi Pradnyana, the route I served passengers residing in the area of Jalan Kamboja, Melati, Hayam Wuruk, Narakusuma, Pandu, Moh. Yamin, Tukad Balian, Sudirman, Dewi Sartika, Diponegoro, Surapati, Kepundung, Patimura and returned to Ngurah Rai Stadium. Meanwhile, the feeder route II included the Jalan Matahari Terbit, Sanur, Tukad Yeh Aya, Sanglah area and then returned to Matahari Terbit. ARCHEOLOGICAL protection through maintenance, preservation and conservation, even through reconstruction as well, has turned to be an international problem not only today, but actually in the future. Such matters were indicated by the activities of UNESCO as an international institution, who concerned with the most important of world cultural heritage e.g. archeological remains. UNESCO have done a lot of excellent work, which need a reasonable budgets, expert, equipment etc. and the best example is the safeguarding of Brobudur temple. As the UNESCO member, our governments are concerned and responsible to protect our monuments for our national interest, such as Brobudur temple. Based on the development of archaeological studies and the related studies especially in field of archaeological protection, now such problems is a technical matter and besed on scientific consideration. Facing such problem , Indonesian government have done a number of works e.g the safeguarding of borobudur tample {in cooperation with {UNESCO}, Prambanan tample, Demak mosque, and other tamples in Bali namely Pura Besakih, Pura Mengening, Pura Pegulingan, Pura Taman Sari etc. In this case, our government as one of the ASEAN countries have carried out a coordinate programmers through SPAFA (Sub project of archaeology and fine art) to find out the effective ways and means dealing with the problems of archaeological protection . Discussing the archaeological protection in Bali, it should be remembered that Bali, even a very small island, but has a lot of archaeological monuments, which most of them belonged to living monuments. Among them are a number of Hindu tample, spreated nearly in the whole island, as well as Hindu statues, inscription etc. As the holy monuments for Balinese society, so the Balinese have the responsibility to take care their monuments as their religious function Officially, archaeological protection in Bali is done by Bali Office for Preservation of archaeological and Historical Heritage (Kantor Bali Suaka pening-gelang Sejarah dan Purbakala Bali) in coordialnation and corporation with the local government and local people as well. This office have done a lot of archaeological reconstruction, but not yet covered the whole of them, because of the limited budgets etc. In case of protecting the archaeological monuments in Bali, Bali Office for Preservation of archaeological and Historical Heri-
tage has given a technical guidance to the local people for reconstructing their monuments and financial support as well. As the governments have a very limited budget for these works, and as the owner of the living monuments, so the Balinese people have their religious tasks and responsibility to protect sacred monuments. In Bali generally each village have three village temples named Pura Kyayangan Tiga e.g Pura Puseh,Pura Desa (sometime combined with Pura Bale Agung ) and Pura dalem. Among them are belonged to archaeological monuments and frequently in these temple a number of archaeological monuments are preserved such as statues, inscription etc. It is important to note here that the unity of the Balinese society is tightly bounded by the village temples and social organization. Based on religious reasons, actuality Balinese society has a strong spirit to keep their monuments in a well condition as holy monuments. Since a very long time the Balinese people have maintained and restored their monuments in a very traditional ways, based on their own religious will and spirit, and for this purpose they collected the materials, even reasonable money from the village members. The village members, especially the skilled members (Balinese, undagi) did the restoration and led by the village leader, without any payment (Balinese, ngayah). This mutual model of works named gotong royong is one of the Indonesian spirits, which has been developed since the early time until today. It is a remarkable fact since the early time Balinese people have done the archeological protection in their traditional ways, which really should be regarded as a community based conservation. The most important meaning of these facts is the Balinese have done their religious task, which still continued from one generation to next generation and still retained until today. Therefore these facts indicated that the Balinese people from time to time have played important role for protecting their archeological monuments, for worshipping their ancestor’s spirit, the Hindu Trinity as well as their local deities. It is hoped that this religious traditions should be keep in people’s mind and increased, now and in the near future for the safeguarding the archeological monuments and its cultural values. Returned Vietnam diary gives son glimpse of father Associated Press Writer
LONG XUYEN, Vietnam — Vu Dinh Son was 18 months old when his father left home to ÂżJKW $PHULFDQ IRUFHV LQ 9LHWQDP DQG MXVW ZKHQ WKH PDQ ZDV NLOOHG LQ D IR[KROH HQFRXQWHU with U.S. Marines. But the son now has fresh glimpses into the life of the father he never knew thanks to a wartime diary, returned to him courtesy of the United States. The pocket-sized book was brought to Vietnam in June by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who, in return, was handed a bundle of letters written by an American soldier that had been kept in Vietnam. The high-level exchange of artifacts symbolized a joint desire for closer ties by the former enemies, who now share concerns over China’s rise. U.S. Marine Robert “Iraâ€? Frazure took the diary from the chest of Son’s father, Vu Dinh Doan, in March 1966 and then took it home with him, presumably as a war souvenir. Earlier this year, he asked the sister of a fellow Vietnam vet to track down Doan’s family in Vietnam to return the diary. She did that with the help of the PBS television program “History Detectives,â€? which tracked down Doan’s family earlier this year. “When my father left for the EDWWOHÂżHOG , ZDV WRR VPDOO WR NQRZ anything, I was not even able to call out ‘Dad,’â€? Son said Friday after a tearful ceremony outside his house during which the diary was returned, along with a photo of him and two bank notes. “Whatever he wrote in his small diary will make us extremely happy,â€?

The U.S. relies on Vietnamese cooperation in its hunt for the remains of American soldiers in

HONDA MotoGP stand-in Jonathan Rea will stay in the Superbike World Championship for 2013, despite suggestions of a full-time move into top-level grand prix racing. Rea is deputising for the injured Casey Stoner in Honda’s MotoGP line-up until the world champion is fully recovered from surgery on his Indianapolis crash injuries. The Briton finished eighth on his MotoGP debut at Misano last weekend, and had been linked to the last remaining prototype seat in the 2013 field at the Gresini Honda squad. But instead Honda has announced that Rea will remain part of the Ten Kate line-up in World Superbikes for a fifth season. “I’m happy to continue my partnership with Honda in this exciting championship,” said Rea. “I’ve been loyal to Honda my whole career and that’s because I believe in them as a company and I believe that we can achieve more together in the future.” Rea is expected to remain on the MotoGP Honda for the next three races before Stoner returns for his home round in Australia.

The FIM has released a provisional calendar for the 2013 MotoGP season, which will include 19 rounds, one more than this year. The season will start on March 31 in Qatar - traditionally a night event - and will be followed by back-to-back races at venues yet to be announced. The campaign will end at the Valencia circuit on November 10. The Portuguese GP, which took place in May this year, is absent from the calendar. The open slots are believed to be for Argentina and Texas, which secured contracts to host races from next season. “Next year we’ll have three GPs in Spain, we’ll have Argentina and Texas in April so as to start earlier in Qatar and to arrive in Europe in May,” said Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta earlier this year.

Police arrest 9 more terror suspects Associated Press
JAKARTA — An elite anti-terror squad has arrested nine Islamic militants in Indonesia and seized a dozen homemade bombs from a group suspected of planning suicide attacks against security forces and the government, police said Sunday. Two suspects were arrested Saturday in Central Java’s Solo town after authorities received information about their whereabouts from other militants in the group who had recently surrendered, said national police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar. The two were interrogated and led police to six other members of the group hours later in the same town. A ninth suspect was arrested late Saturday in West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. Amar said two of those arrested, Badri Hartono and Rudi Kurnia Putra, both 45, worked to recruit young men and taught at least one member of the group how to make bombs. ³7KH\ ZHUH WKH FHQWUDO ¿JXUHV of the group who had planned several terror attacks,” Amar said. “They recruited, invited young men to be trained in a military-style jihadi camp and bought bomb-making materials.” He said the group had planned to bomb the country’s Parliament building, shoot police and attack members of the antiterrorism squad. Police seized 12 homemade bombs and others that were partially completed along with three rifles, four swords and several jihadist books from the homes of three suspects, Amar said. Five bombs were safely defused late Saturday at the scene in Solo, the hometown of convicted radical cleric Abu Bakar Bashir. Police are still investigating the possible link of the unnamed group to other terrorism networks, Amar said. Authorities believe it has now been largely broken up, but they continue to search for other members. Since March, more than 30 militant suspects have been arrested and seven others killed in a series of raids in Indonesia. All were plotting domestic attacks, and some — aged between 18 and 30 — had attended a military-style training camp in Poso on Sulawesi island.
Another member of the unnamed group, alleged bomb maker Muhammad Toriq, surrendered two weeks ago in the capital, Jakarta, while carrying a gun and ammunition and wearing a suicide bomber belt that did not contain any explosives. A second militant, Yusuf Rizaldi, gave himself up to police in North Sumatra three days later. Both cooperated to help bring down the group’s other members in Saturday’s raid, Amar said. Police have said Toriq was allegedly part of an elaborate plan to shoot police and bomb the Parliament building as a way to wage jihad to establish Islamic Sharia law in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation. He had been on the run since police flushed him out of his Jakarta house earlier this month after neighbors reported seeing smoke billowing from it. He escaped again a week later after a blast rocked a house in the capital’s outskirts. Police believe the bomb accidentally exploded while it was being prepared for a terrorist attack, killing one alleged militant inside the home. When Toriq walked into a police station and surrendered after having a change of heart, he told authorities he had planned to go on a suicide bomb mission Sept. 10, targeting either police, Indonesia’s elite anti-terrorism squad or Buddhists as a way to protest against treatment of the minority Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. Indonesia, a secular nation, has been battling terrorists since 2002, when militants linked to the Southeast Asian network Jemaah Islamiyah started attacking Western nightclubs, restaurants and embassies. More than 260 people have been killed in the attacks, many of them foreign tourists. Recent terror attacks in Indonesia have been carried out by individuals or small groups and have targeted local “infidels” instead of Westerners, with less deadly results.

SAN FRANCISCO — Neither side in a bitter patent battle is satisfied with Apple Inc.’s $1 billion jury verdict over Samsung Electronics Co. after a three-week trial this summer. Samsung wants a new trial. Apple is seeking an additional $707 million in damages and interest. The two companies filed a blizzard of legal papers late Friday and early Saturday with their demands that a federal judge in San Jose significantly amend — or toss out altogether — the jury’s Aug. 24 verdict. The jury found that 26 Samsung products ripped off Apple’s technology at the heart of its iPhones and iPads. “Samsung made a calculated business decision to copy the industrial designs, graphical user interfaces, and touchscreen navigation technology of the iPhone and iPad,” Apple lawyers wrote in court papers, arguing for the additional damages. “Samsung has reaped extraordinary rewards from its wrongful sale of iPhone and iPad clones by taking market share, revenues, and profits from Apple.” The Apple lawyers contend that the “massive damage to the iPhone’s distinctive product identity caused by Samsung’s sale of millions of iPhone clones is irreversible.” U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh has scheduled a Dec. 6 hearing to discuss the myriad issues raised by both companies. Samsung says it will appeal if Koh turns down its demands. The two companies are locked in a ferocious struggle for supremacy in the global smartphone market. Samsung is the worldwide leaders in smartphone sales, securing a market share of 33 percent in the second quarter, up from 17 percent a year ago. Fiat’s decision in late August to freeze planned investments to avoid further losses in a weak car market has sparked a firestorm of criticism from trade unions and politicians. Unions are worried about potential job losses if the company eventually shifts manufacturing to countries where wages are lower. CANBERRA, Australia — Australia’s deputy prime minister warned Friday that the greatest threat to the U.S. economy are the “cranks and crazies” in the Republican Party, a rare foray into American domestic politics that was blasted by the opposition. Wayne Swan, who also is treasurer and his center-left Labor Party government’s ranking finance minister, took aim at the tea party during a speech to a business forum, breaking a convention among Australia’s major parties to steer clear of U.S. domestic political debates. “Let’s be blunt and acknowledge the biggest threat to the world’s biggest economy are the cranks and
crazies that have taken over a part of the Republican Party,” Swan said. He said “the extreme right tea party wing” of the Republican Party had held the national interest hostage during last year’s debate over the U.S. borrowing limit despite President Barack Obama’s “goodwill and strong efforts.” He said it was imperative that Congress reach an agreement to support growth and avoid a “fiscal
cliff” of deep government spending cuts and higher taxes in January, which he said could push the U.S. economy back into recession. The conservative opposition said Swan’s speech betrayed his “hatred” of Republicans. “The Labor Party is peddling hatred and they’re got to stop,” opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey told reporters. “They hate the Republican Party. I’d like Wayne Swan to say something positive about someone somewhere.” Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who travels to New York next week to address the U.N. General Assembly, defended her deputy’s comments as “appropriate.”

TOKYO — Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda handily beat three other contenders in a ruling party leadership election Friday and will remain Japan’s leader a while longer despite growing voter disappointment with his government’s performance. Noda, in office a year, won 818 points out of a total of 1,231 points in the vote, suggesting the ruling Democratic Party of Japan has rallied around him even as his approval rating has fallen below 30 percent. Noda had said he plans to call a national election “before long,” but has given no timeframe. Lately, he has suggested he intends to stay on in office to try to finish tasks he set out to accomplish, including helping Japan deal with the impact of last year’s tsunami and nuclear crisis. Polls suggest the DPJ would be badly defeated if elections were held now. Voters appear to be disappointed over the DPJ’s inability to deliver
promised change to Japan’s stodgy politics and are upset with Noda’s push to double the sales tax to 10 percent, a step Noda argues is needed to meet increasing social security costs as Japan’s population ages and its national debt grows. Noda, Japan’s sixth prime minister in six years, played up his resolve to make tough decisions in a speech before Friday’s vote, promising to “sweat with all of you to make a vigorous Japan together.” “The real reform Japan needs is decisive politics when we face issues that need to be decided,” Noda told party members gathered in a Tokyo hotel. Noda also pledged to push forward with the goal of making Japan a nuclear free society by the 2030s. The pledge appeared to be an attempt to show his government was committed to phasing out nuclear power even though his Cabinet on Wednesday backpedaled from an advisory panel’s recommendation to eliminate nuclear power by 2040 in the face of opposition from pro-nuclear businesses and groups.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - A Pakistani minister offered $100,000 on Saturday to anyone who kills the maker of an online video which insults Islam, as sporadic protests rumbled on across parts of the Muslim world. “I announce today that this blasphemer, this sinner who has spoken nonsense about the holy Prophet, anyone who murders him, I will reward him with $100,000,” Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour told a news conference, to applause.
“I invite the Taliban brothers and the al Qaeda brothers to join me in this blessed mission.” A spokesman for Pakistan’s prime minister said the government disassociated itself from the minister’s statement. While many Muslim countries saw mostly peaceful protests on Friday, fifteen people were killed in Pakistan during demonstrations over the video. People involved in the film, an amateurish 13-minute clip of which was posted on YouTube, have said it was made by a 55-year-old California man, Nak-
oula Basseley Nakoula. Nakoula has not returned to his home in the Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos since leaving voluntarily to be interviewed by federal authorities. 23 Nuclear Plants in Tsunami Risk Zones, Study Finds

MARINA, Calif. — In the Central California coastal town of Marina, a $7 million desalination plant that can turn salty ocean waves into fresh drinking water sits idle behind rusty, locked GRRUV VKXWWHUHG E\ ZDWHU RI¿FLDOV EHFDXVH ULVLQJ HQHUJ\ FRVWV PDGH WKH SODQW WRR H[SHQVLYH Far to the north in well-heeled Marin County, plans were scrapped for a desalination facility despite two decades of planning and millions of dollars spent on a pilot plant. Squeezing salt from the ocean to make clean drinking water is a worldwide phenomenon that has been embraced in thirsty California, with its cycles of drought and growing population. There are currently 17 desalination proposals in the state, concentrated along the 3DFL¿F ZKHUH SHRSOH DUH SOHQWLIXO and fresh water is not. But many projects have been stymied by skyrocketing construction costs, huge energy requirements for running plants, regulatory delays and legal challenges over environmental impacts on marine life. Only one small plant along Monterey Bay is pumping out any drinking water. From Marin County to San Diego, some water districts are
asking themselves: How much are we willing to pay for this new water? “We found that our demand for water had dropped so much since the time we started exploring desalination, we didn’t need the water,� said Libby Pischel, a spokeswoman for the Marin Municipal Water District. “Right now, conservation costs less than desalination.� Desalination plants can take water from the ocean or drill down and grab the less salty, brackish water from seaside aquifers. Because of their potential impacts to marine life, the California Coastal Commission reviews each project case-by-case. There was great fanfare in 2009 when the last regulatory hurdle was cleared to build the Western Hemisphere’s largest desalination plant in Carlsbad, north of San Diego. At the time, it was proposed that the $320 million project would
suck in 100 million gallons of seawater and be capable of producing 50 million gallons of drinking water a day. It was expected to come online by this year. Since then, the plant owner, Poseidon Resources LLC, has been negotiating a water purchase agreement and is close to clinching a 30year deal with the San Diego County Water Authority, a wholesaler to cities and agencies that provide water to 3.1 million people. The compact is essential for Poseidon to obtain financing to build what has become a $900 million project, which includes the seaside plant and a 10-mile pipeline. The San Diego agency hopes the plant opens in 2016 and anticipates desalination will account for 7 percent of the region’s supply in 2020. It estimates the cost is comparable to other new, local sources of drinking water, such as treated toilet water or briny groundwater.
In March 2011, a devastating earthquake and tsunami set off a partial meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant on Japan’s coast. A recent study led by European researchers found Fukushima is not alone, as 22 other plants around the world may be similarly susceptible to destructive tsunami waves, with most of them in east and southeast regions of Asia. The 23 facilities on the list (including Fukushima) house a total of 74 nuclear reactors. Thirteen of the plants are active, while the others are either nearing completion or being expanded to house more reactors. The researchers say East and Southeast Asia are at the greatest risk of a nuclear crisis triggered by a tsunami because of the rise of atomic power stations in the region, especially in China, which houses 27 of the world’s 64 nuclear reactors currently under construction. “The most important fact is that 19 (two of which are in Taiwan) RXW RI WKH UHDFWRUV DUH EHLQJ EXLOW LQ DUHDV LGHQWLÂżHG DV GDQJHURXV ´ state the authors of the study. In addition, two other major experiments have found that giving children and teens calorie-free alternatives to the sugary drinks they usually consume leads to less weight gain. Collectively, the results strongly suggest that sugary drinks cause people to pack on the pounds, independent of other unhealthy behavior such as overeating and getting too little exercise, scientists say. That adds weight to the push for taxes, portion limits like the one just adopted in New York City, and other policies to curb consumption of soda, juice drinks and sports beverages sweetened with sugar. Soda lovers do get some good news: Sugar-free drinks did not raise the risk of obesity in these studies. “You may be able to fool the tasteâ€? and satisfy a sweet tooth without paying a price in weight, said an obesity researcher with no role in the studies, Rudy Leibel of Columbia University. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulXPEXO´ ORQJ Ă€DJV DOO WKHVH DUH SUHURJDWLYHV RU DWWULEXWHV of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjorâ€?, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Kanye ‘in tears’ that sex tape could being shopped around Kanye West and Kim Kardashian sure do have a lot in common besides their love of fashion. A 20-minute sex tape starring the rapper and an 18-year old married woman is reportedly being shopped around to the highest bidder – and it’s apparently brought him to tears.

It’s unclear how the video fell into the wrong hands since West is the one who shot it. According to Radar Online, which has viewed the footage and claims it is indeed the rapper (they also have a screen grab of him), he can be seen setting up the camera and making the woman state her age, and at the end of it, he looks directly into the lens as he shuts it off. His partner – who tells West in the tape that she and her husband “don’t have sex anymore … that’s why I’m here” – is a dead ringer for Kardashian. Radar describes her as having “bodacious curves, dusky skin, and long black hair.” But the reality star needn’t worry that her man is cheating. The video, which does not involve any kissing, was reportedly shot before he began seeing her shortly after her split from Kris Humphries last October. Britney Spears’ Camp ‘Livid’ Over Glee Episode MANY Britney Spears fans were shocked by Thursday’s “Glee” episode after the show gave the superstar’s pop hits a second go -- this time dredging up Britney’s past tribulations, including her 2007 head-shaving incident and umbrella attack on the paparazzi. And it wasn’t just Britney supporters who were angered. Speaking to Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush on Friday, Britney’s manager said the singer’s team was completely unaware “Glee” was going to revisit Britney’s troubled times and was “livid” over the episode. In addition to the one-scene ode to bald Britney, the inflammatory ep (dubbed “Britney 2.0”) also recreated the pop princess’ much-maligned “Gimme More” performance at the 2007 MTV VMAs, where the singer was criticized for everything ranging from less-than-six-pack abs, to poorly hidden hair extensions, to sloppy, low-energy dance moves.
