LOS ANGELES — The Walt Disney Co. is defending its newest princess following a backlash over her Hispanic-influenced ethnicity. A new character named Sofia will star in the TV movie “Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess” airing Nov. 18 on the Disney Channel and Disney Junior. Hispanic advocacy groups have questioned whether the fair-skinned, blue-eyed young princess is an accurate representation of the Hispanic population and wondered why Disney isn’t doing more to promote its first princess with Hispanic-inspired roots.

“They seem to be backpedaling,” said Lisa Navarrete, spokeswoman for the National Council of La Raza. “They’ve done such a good job in the past when they’ve introduced Native American, AfricanAmerican and Asian princesses. They made a big deal out of it, and there was a lot of fanfare, but now they’re sort of scrambling. Meanwhile, the Head of Bali house urged the governor to cancel the permit because it is against the effort to preserve the environment as well as the aspiration of the society. The policy of the leader should concern all people not only someone. “If most of the Balinese people rejected the idea to hand in the forest to investor then it is because they realize that it has no use for the society and environment. Especially because our mangrove forest is very limited so the permit should be rejected,” he added. Furthermore, Bali House must act more seriously and give recommendation to revoke the permit. If the government rejected the recommendation then the house must not

be afraid and continue to support the hope of the society. He thinks that the mechanism in the government must run properly. The coordination in the legislation must be done since the beginning because it is a sensitive case. Denial reactions against the plan of the Ministry of Education and Culture to remove the English language subject from the curriculum of elementary school are getting widespread in Bali. Other than educational and academic observers expressing their disagreement, people’s representatives in Commission D of the Denpasar House also revealed similar rejection. Removal of English from primary school curriculum was assessed as a step backwards for Indonesia in facing the increasingly tight international competition. Besides, the removal of English was not in line with the characteristic of Bali which is now becoming a world-famous destination. Secretary of Commission D of the Denpasar House, A.A. Putu Wibawa, accompanied by its member I Wayan Warka revealed the matter on Monday (Oct 22). Agung Wibawa asserted that English was a world lingua franca doubling as the basic language of the international science, especially information technology. If the policy of removing the subject would be realized, it meant to downgrade the position of Indonesia in international community, including the transfer of science and technology because many references were written in English. “It is clearly a step backwards. Now, it is an advanced and globalization era where information technology plays an important role. Why is there a plan of removing English subject whereas most references and IT

applications are written in English?” said Agung Wibawa justified by Warka. Agung Wibawa and Warka assessed the removal of English subject by central government from the curriculum of elementary school to optimize Bahasa Indonesia was unreasonable. There was no correlation between optimization of Bahasa Indonesia and removal of English. “Is there any guarantee that removal of English subject can optimize the use of Bahasa Indonesia? Where is the correlation?” asked Warka. If the Ministry of Education and Culture insisted on removing the English subject, said Agung Wibawa, his party would asked the Denpasar Municipality so as the English subject remained to be taught in elementary school. The subject could be incorporated into local subjects. “After all, English must still be taught from an early age because the mastery of English is very important for younger generation of Bali. However, it should also be accompanied with a commitment to optimize the learning of Bahasa Indonesian as a language of unity and Balinese language as mother tongue of Balinese human,” he said. As reported earlier, two education observers, Dr. Putu Rumawan Salain and Putu Sarjana, also expressed their strong opposition to the plan of the Ministry of Education and Culture to remove English subject from the curriculum of elementary education. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

CHICAGO — Parents who want to reduce their kids’ exposure to pesticides may seek out organic fruits and vegetables, but they aren’t necessarily safer or more nutritious than conventional foods, the nation’s leading pediatricians group says in its first advice on organics. Science hasn’t proven that eating pesticide-free food makes people any healthier, the American Academy of Pediatrics said. “Theoretically there could be negative effects, especially in young children with growing brains,” but rigorous scientific evidence is lacking, said Dr. Janet Silverstein, a co-author of the academy’s new report and a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of Florida in Gainesville. “We just can’t say for certain that organics is better without long-term controlled studies,” she said. The report was published online Monday in Pediatrics and echoes a Stanford University study released last month. That research concluded that while eating organic fruits and vegetables can reduce pesticide exposure, the amount measured in conventionally grown produce was within

safety limits. Since organic foods tend to be costlier, a good strategy for penny-pinching parents concerned about pesticides is to buy only organic versions of foods with the most pesticide residue — including apples, peaches, strawberries and celery, Silverstein said. But the pediatricians group says higher prices on organic

foods might lead some parents to buy fewer fruits and vegetables — not a good strategy since both have health benefits including reducing risks for obesity, heart disease and some cancers. Parents should aim to provide their families a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whether organic or not, along with plenty of whole grains and low-fat or fat-free dairy products, the report says.

SAN DIEGO — It could be the muffled sound of singing in the shower or that sing-songy indecipherable voice from the Muppets’ Swedish Chef. Surprisingly, scientists said the audio they captured was a whale imitating people. In fact, the whale song sounded so eerily human that divers initially thought it was a human voice. Handlers at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego heard mumbling in 1984 coming from a tank containing whales and dolphins that sounded like two people chatting far away. It wasn’t until one day, after a diver surfaced from the tank and asked, “Who told me to get out?” did researchers realize the garble came from a captive male Beluga whale. For several years, they recorded its spontaneous sounds while it was underwater and when it surfaced. An acoustic analysis revealed the human-like sounds were several octaves lower than typical whale calls. The research was published online Monday in Current Biology. Scientists think the whale’s close proximity to people allowed it to listen to and mimic human conversation. It did so by changing the pressure in its nasal cavities. After four years of copying people, it went back to sounding like a whale, emitting high-pitched noises. It died five years ago. Dolphins and parrots have been taught to mimic the patterns of human speech, but it’s rare for an animal to do it spontaneously. The study is not the first time a whale has sounded human. Scientists who have studied sounds of white whales in the wild sometimes heard what sounded like shouting children. Caretakers at the Vancouver Aquarium in Canada previously said they heard one of the white whales say its name.

Evening entertainment started with Dita The Mighty who played a drum solo session warming up the crowd followed by Mom Called Killer breaking the first ground with a big inciting performance. Their mix of tight drums together with guitar distortion and heavy vowel sounding basses had the huge crowd totally freaking out. The next band on stage was Stars and Rabbit. Their music, characterised by pop and folk influences, was softer but definitely not less enjoyable. Poultry smuggling to Bali foiled at Gilimanuk Negara (Bali Post)—

Hundreds of ducks from Banyuwangi, East Java, were foiled to enter Bali on Monday morning (Oct 22) at Gilimanuk Harbor. Delivery of approximately 800 ducks was openly transported by using two pickups covered with tarp. Owners of those hundreds of ducks worth tens of millions of rupiahs admitted to send those ducks to Soka, Tabanan. Some of the ducks would be raised and some others would be sold. Animal smuggling banned from entering Bali was known by the official at 04:00 a.m. Two pickups with license plate DK 9970 DU and P 8035 VB got out of the barge on the goods dock of Gilimanuk Harbor. Officers of the Gilimanuk Marine Police and Quarantine Office suspected both trucks whose rear part was covered with tarp. From the two pickups were smelt pungent odor and heard a noise. The officers immediately stopped them at Post II and examined the papers and freights carried. After the tarp was opened, it was found full of ducks ready to sell and without documents. Coordinator of the Agricultural Quarantine Office of Gilimanuk, Nyoman Budiarta, said last Monday that those ducks had been secured in the Quarantine Office and the owners were also questioned. From recognition of the perpetrators, those ducks would be brought to Soka, Tabanan to be raised and sold. The perpetrators deliberately did not transport them by truck, but by pickups and covered them with tarp. To deceive the officers, mouth of those ducks were deliberately tied with rubber so as not to be noisy during the journey. “Indeed, the perpetrators blatantly dare to get in with the hope that after escaping from the harbor the tarps are opened. Thus, it is considered to carry raised ducks not contraband,” said Budiarta. To ensure whether the birds got bird flu or not, they would be checked by rapid test. Since the delivery was prohibited and had potential of bird flu, those birds would be eliminated. “We are going to eliminate this poultry to provide a deterrent effect. We do not want this will be made a trick to deliver even more ducks. It’s the anticipation so as the bird flu epidemic will no longer spread,” he said. Poultry smuggling from Java to Bali was indeed very promising because of high demand and the profit doubled. Such an action infringed the article 6 letter a and c, article 9, paragraph 1 of Act No. 16/1992 on Quarantine and Governor Regulation No. 44/2005 on temporary ban of bringing in live poultry to Bali except for chicken hatchling. Meanwhile, the poultry owner, Ariyanto, 28, claimed those were the first birds bringing in to Bali. He reasoned not to know about the ban of bringing in poultry to Bali. “I used to deliver ducks to Madura and there was no restriction. Therefore, I take them here as receiving order from Soka to be raised and re-sold,” said the man from Benculuk, Celuring, Banyuwangi. He claimed to suffer a loss worth tens of millions of rupiahs because his business was thwarted. In addition, on the same day, the Quarantine Office also thwarted the delivery of dozens of Balinese pig to outside Bali without document through Post I of Gilimanuk Harbor. Dozens of pigs from Karangasem that would be sold in Java were piled in the truck. “We rejected and returned the 45 heads of pig because they were not equipped with documents,” he added. (kmb26)

Sea sand dredging on the coastal territory of Pekutatan still proliferates and seems to be neglected. Even, it kindles an envy at two adjoining hamlets, namely the Yehkuning and Dangin Pangkung. Previously, the dredging of sea sand at both hamlets in Pekutatan frequently happened. However, since the enforcement of customary bylaw at the hamlet, most miners of Yehkuning had now retired. Meanwhile, at the adjacent hamlet, though the issue had been discussed in the

subdistrict it did not apply the same customary bylaws. Even, the hamlet seemed to allow the dredging activities freely. “Formerly, it was agreed to discontinue all the activities, but the dredging at that hamlet was getting freer. It should not be discriminative,” said the resident. Chief of Pekutatan customary village, I Made Ariyasa, admitted the sea sand dredging was previously rampant made by individuals of both hamlets. However, Yehkuning hamlet had implemented the customary bylaw banning the sea sand dredging. “Bylaw at each hamlet is indeed different and please do not think if I from Dangin Pangkung do not want to take action. Indeed, our customary

village does not have such a bylaw,” he explained. Actually, in the discussion with the subdistrict and regency authority had been agreed to close all the activities together. Especially for Dangin Pangkung, the agreement had not been further discussed at the local hamlet as the dredging was still going on there. As planned, the issue would be discussed together in the customary village meeting. To completely accomplish the problem was required a synergy of the village and Jembrana Regency. It did not only discipline, but villagers collecting the sea sand should also be provided with guidance and life skill training. So far, local villagers preferred to collect sea sand as triggered by the reasonable income. “We do not want if this issue will be long-drawn. The discontinued flood mitigation project at Celukan Bawang, Gerokgak subdistrict, was ascertained to have been kindled by incomplete land acquisition along the route. As planned, the drainage should be built with the width of 5.6 meters, but people just released the land with the width of 1.25 meters. For this condition, the project implementer was forced to discontinue the work until the Buleleng government addressed the problem of resident’s land affected by the project. A staff of the flood mitigation project committee (PPK) of Celukan Bawang, Gede Binayuda, when contacted on Monday (Oct 22) explained that since residents questioned the project cessation his party had assigned the staff to check the project location and coordinated it to local village, subdistrict and the Buleleng Public Works authority. It was to clarify the information on the cessation of drainage project in the north of Seririt-Gilimanuk road section. The main cause of the project cessation was the incomplete acquisition process of the land used for the drainage. As the agreement, the residents only released the land with of width of 1.25 meters.

Pursuant to the design, the width of drainage built would be 5.6 meters. Since the land did not meet the design, the contractor removed the work to the upstream or to the south of the Seririt-Gilimanuk road section. Even, the drainage work in the north along 100 meter affected the wall of one of the residents and its party asked for compensation. Since provincial government only worked on the physical project and the funds could not be used for compensation, the work was finally discontinued. “The contractor discontinued the work as the land width was not suitable with the design. If forced by using the existing land, we’ll be blamed as the construction is unsuitable with the design. Therefore, the project worked on at the downstream was removed to the upstream area,” he said. According to Binayuda, the only solution to continue the projects was the local government facilitated the acquisition of resident’s land affected by the project route. According to the agreement of the Bali Government with Buleleng Government, the province only financed the physical project, while the land acquisition was the responsibility of Buleleng Regency. Moreover, allocation of the project fund was clearly intended

for physical work and could not be used to pay compensation of the resident’s land affected by the project route. “This project fund is only for physical work, while we have no fund for the land acquisition or compensation of resident’s building and it has become the responsibility of regency government. We are still coordinating it. Hopefully, the regency government could resolve this issue,” said Binayuda while mentioning the Celukan Bawang flood mitigation project was financed by the state budget worth IDR 4.3 billion. As reported earlier, several villagers of Celukan Bawang, Gerokgak subdistrict, protested the construction of drainage as discontinued for no obvious reason. The length of drainage built was about 700 meters, but the contractor only worked on along 100 meters. Meanwhile, the remaining 600 meters to the beach had not been worked on. Residents suspected if the project was discontinued due to running out of fund. If the project was not resumed promptly, the local residents threatened to shut down the drainage in the south of Seririt-Gilimanuk road section. An Israeli foreign ministry spokesman said it was “astounding” that Qatar was taking sides, noting that the emir “has never dignified the PA with a visit”. with the armed wing of Abbas’ Fatah movement. It refuses to renounce violence or to recognise Israel’s right to exist and it is ostracised by the West as a terrorist organisation. DUBAI - Iran said on Tuesday it would stop oil exports if pressure from Western sanctions got any tighter and it had a “Plan B” contingency strategy to survive without oil revenues. “If sanctions intensify we will stop exporting oil,” Iranian oil minister Rostam Qasemi told reporters in Dubai. “We have prepared a plan to run the country without any oil revenues,” he said, adding, “So far to date we haven’t had any serious problems, but if the sanctions were to be renewed we would go for ‘Plan B’. “If you continue to add to the sanctions we (will) cut our oil exports to the world.”

WASHINGTON — Six weeks ago, the Federal Reserve unveiled its latest plan to invigorate the U.S. economy. This week, the Fed will likely send a simple message: Give that plan time to work. No major announcements are expected when the Fed’s latest twoday policy meeting ends Wednesday. Instead, officials will likely affirm their plan to buy mortgage bonds as long as necessary to make home buying more affordable, keep short-term interest rates at record lows through mid-2015 and take other stimulative steps if hiring doesn’t pick up. Those policies are intended to support an economy that’s shown flashes of strength but isn’t growing fast enough to create many jobs or to increase Americans’ income. The economy grew at a meager 1.3 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter. Economists think it grew slightly faster in the July-September quarter. Yet many employers remain wary of hiring, in part because of tax increases and spending cuts set to kick in next year and in part because of a slowing global economy. The $40 billion-a-month in bond purchases the Fed launched last month are designed to lower interest rates

and cause stock and home prices to rise, creating a “wealth effect.” When consumers feel wealthier, they’re typically more willing to spend, thereby boosting the economy. The Fed made clear it would likely hold rates low even after the economic recovery has strengthened. That was a signal that it will keep intervening until the economy grows fast enough to reduce unemployment sharply. Now, the Fed likely wants to wait to assess the effects of its policies before deciding whether to take further action. There’s another reason to stand down for now: A debate is raging inside the Fed over whether its actions are doing much, if any, good. The Fed’s moves last month were approved 11-1, with Jeffrey Lacker, president of the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank, dissenting. Since then, some other regional Fed presidents have expressed their discomfort.

After slashing its China production in half earlier this month, Toyota plans to keep output at plants in the country about 30 percent lower than year-ago levels, the Nikkei added. Referring to the report, a Toyota spokesman told AFP that “we did not release any new target figure for our global production this year”. “It remains to be seen whether we will meet the target, as global production also includes output in other regions, even though we saw a decline in output in China,” he added. Tensions over the territorial spat surged in September when Japan nationalised the archipelago, known as the Senkakus in Japan and Diaoyu islands in China, which are believed to sit atop vast mineral reserves. Huge anti-Japan protests broke out across China and stoked calls for a boycott of Japanese products. Toyota shares slipped 0.15 percent to close at 3,145 yen in Tokyo trade.

SINGAPORE - Singapore has opened a new cruise terminal capable of berthing the world’s biggest luxury liners, in a bid to boost the city-state’s position as a regional travel hub. The Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore was opened late Monday with company officials saying it will allow the island-state to tap the growing number of people in Asia taking leisure trips on luxury vessels. Operated by a joint venture between Singapore Airport Terminal Services and Europe’s Creuers del Port de Barcelona, the terminal can dock ships weighing up to 220,000 tonnes and measuring a maximum 360 metres (1,181 feet). With deep waters, a large turning basin and the absence of any height restrictions, the terminal can accommodate the newest generation of ocean liners like the

Royal Caribbean’s oasis-class ships. “The official opening of (the terminal) marks a significant development for both the cruise landscape in Singapore and the ASEAN region,” said Melvin Vu, chief executive of the joint venture that operates the Sg$500 million ($409 million) facility. ASEAN is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations that groups Singapore with Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Vu said the terminal would serve “to further anchor Singapore’s position as an attractive homeport for cruise lines” because of its modern facilities and proximity to Changi Airport, itself a regional aviation hub. Meanwhile, the fire on the eastern slopes had been seen from Sunday afternoon (Oct 21). The staff of Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Karangasem said the hotspots located in the forest of Mount Agung, at the border of Nangka, Bebandem subdistrict or on the southeastern slopes. Then, the fire also occurred in the western part of Mount Agung, namely in the Puragae protected forest. Deputy Chairman of the Karangasem House, I Nyoman Karya Kartika, said in Karangasem on Monday (Oct 22) the fire in Puragae forest was estimated to have occurred on October 12 or 13. “When I passed through the road of Daya hamlet to Pempatan on the way to attend an invitation at Keladian, the traces of forest fires were seen on the roadside. Mr. Regent has got the reports on the fires from the community,” said Karya Kartika. He hoped the regent, forestry-related institutions and BPBD Karangasem to take serious and quick action to handle the fires. It was intended to further prevent the fires in order not to entirely burn it as the area had been very limited due to frequent fires and illegal logging. “The forest in northern part of Mount Agung, precisely in the drying out protected forest over the Daya and Pucang hamlet, Ban village, Kubu, has also caught fire from several days ago,” said Karya Kartika. Last Monday, the fire broke out at

Puragae. Allegedly, the fire had reached a few hectares and the BPBD officers moved to Puragae to put out the fire. Meanwhile, the widespread fire occurred from Sunday to Monday on the eastern slopes of Mount Agung. A number of hotspots were found over Batudawa village. According to hamlet chief of Kedampal, Datah village, I Wayan Bakti, the area reached more than 60 hectares. The greatest and widest hotspots occurred in the forest over Kedampal. Besides, the hotspots were also visible over Nyelukid or over Wates hamlet. From the post at Kedampal hamlet, a total of 12 personnel climbed up last Monday to get near the hotspots. Six of them were the forestry officials such as the Head of Forest Management Resort (RPH) of Abang I Nyoman Dadi, Head of RPH Kubu and Head of RPH Karangasem-Manggis and six residents of Kedampal. The Gelang Agung temple categorized into dang kahyangan (sanctum to venerate a sage) located at Buangga Hamlet, Getasan Village, Petang Subdistrict, is not only considered as a sanctum by local community, but also as one of the cultural heritage cornerstones. Many cultural relics originating from thirteenth century were discovered in the temple. Various stories arose concerning with the temple naming located amidst the paddy fields being far from residential areas. However, the naming is inseparable from the discovery of yellowish bronze bracelets sizing large enough. It is said the bracelet was found in the temple area. Other than bracelets, it was also found a small bronze bracelet scattered around the temple. Unfortunately, none of those bracelets are now left. Priest of the Gelang Agung temple, I Made Terum and priest of Dalem Temple of Buangga I Ketut Malen said their predecessors frequently showed off those objects. Unfortunately, they had disappeared somewhere. Now, the existence of those objects was unknown, including the preliminary evidence of the temple establishment. Surrounding communities only referred to ancient stories. In the temple was also found some perforated coins wrapped in leaves when an excavation was made. Oddly, said a community leader, Made Ngaceng, the erythrina leaf used to wrap the coins was still fresh. Those perforated coins were found during an excavation by residents and the officers of the Antiquities Reserve, Archaeological Agency for Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara Region in 1997. Except for bronze bracelets and perforated coins, according to the story, it was also found a temple mound measuring one square meter when the temple was first discovered. Afterward, the mound was excavated. As a result, it was discovered various kinds of statues. Allegedly, some relicts were still kept under the temple. Few relics excavated have now been placed in Gedong Arca. There are a statue of Lord Vishnu riding Garuda (eagle), phallus, a statue resembling lotus flower comprising three sections with octagonal base, the center of threetiered rectangular frame, and circular pinnacle surrounded by sculpture resembling a lotus leaf. When viewing the phallus building next to it, it is likely a symbol of yoni. If both symbols are combined, then they symbolize fertility. There is also a relic of Padmasana shrine whose headboard is inscribed with Balinese script and a few fragments of the buildings are made of stone, while fragment of the building is rectangle. Chief of Buangga customary village, IGN Arnawa, stated that local community truly hoped the government to pay attention to the temple existence. He assessed the government’s attention so far was very minimal associated with physical condition of the temple and cultural relics retained inside the temple. Meanwhile, various magical stories accompanied the existence of the Gelang Agung temple. One of them mentioned that in the past many juwuk linglang oranges grew around the temple and it was believed to have capability of reviving the dead. Similarly, turmeric was said to grow in the temple area where if harvested it would turn into gold. However, if it was taken home it would no longer be gold. “So far, we have a real experience where the food during the ceremony in the temple never turns stale despite being left for many days,” Ngaceng said. Jro Mangku Terum explained the structure of the Gelang Agung temple was not much different from other sanctum in general in Bali. It had a two-tiered meru shrine used to venerate Goddess Sri. In the temple also occurred a chamber to venerate Danghyang Dwijendra. In certain seasons, especially when the paddy plant belonging to residents of Buangga and surrounding residents was attacked by diseases, they would come to pray to the temple and beg salvation. BEIJING - China’s ruling Communist Party has dropped its strongest hint yet that it will move in the direction of reform, removing a once standard reference to late leader Mao Zedong in statements ahead of a generational leadership transition. Mao has always been held up as an ideological great in party communiques, which also normally mention Marx, Lenin, one-time paramount ruler Deng Xiaoping, former President Jiang Zemin and President Hu Jintao. The Politburo, a powerful decision-making council with two dozen active members, said on Monday a party congress next month would discuss amending the party’s constitution. Previous amendments, including one implicitly allowing party membership for capitalists, have formed the guidelines for important economic and political reforms in the world’s most populous country.

But, crucially, the Politburo in its statement on the issue left out what had been standard wording citing Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought, which adapted the original theories of Marxism that grew out of industrial Europe to the conditions of largely rural China when Mao took over in 1949. “It’s very significant,” Zheng Yongnian, the director of the East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore, said of the removal of a reference to Mao Zedong Thought and the implications of that for the direction leaders were taking. “Before the fall of Bo Xilai, that direction was not so clear. The ITID 2012 is the first forum staged by her ministry in cooperation with BKPM, Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Forestry Ministry, and the Fisheries and Marine Resources Ministry. The event was attended by prospective investors, including CEOs and property developers, from ASEAN countries, Japan, China, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Britain and the United States.

The tourism potential in Indonesia has been presented in the ITID 2012 such as the ones at Bali, Toba Lake in North Sumatra, Bugam Raya in Central Kalimantan, Central Lombok, Tanjun Lesung in Banten, Lagoi Bay in Riau Islands, Belitung, Sari Ater in West Java, Sentul Nirwana Resort in Bogor, and Teluk Mekaki in East Nusa Tenggara, Mari pointed out. World Cup host city may move Fan Fest venue Associated Press Writer

SAO PAULO — The Brazilian jungle city of Manaus is considering changing the location of its Fan Fest venue because construction work may not be completed in time for the 2014 World Cup. FIFA announced all the Fan Fest sites in April, but the government of Amazonas state said Monday that it is looking for an alternative location because it isn’t sure if where the event would take place will be ready. The news comes less than a week after FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke visited Brazil and expressed concerns about the slow pace of construction at some of the stadiums being built for next year’s Confederations Cup. Local officials said work hasn’t started yet in Manaus because “of a complex process” for obtaining the licenses needed for the project, which will be built where the Amazon River meets the Rio Negro. It will take about a year to complete construction, and the government said work needs to start by the end of 2012 to be ready by 2014. “The decision about the possible change in the FIFA Fan Fest venue will not be made until the end of November,” the government said in a statement. “The government is still waiting, but it’s already considering the pos-

sibility of relocating the Fan Fest to another place in Manaus.” The government said changes to the “structural project” are also being analyzed before construction can begin. FIFA said that any changes to the initial project would have to be approved again by football’s governing body and the local World Cup organizing committee. “The city would have to submit a detailed concept, which would then be reviewed by FIFA and the LOC, as was done at the time of the selection of the first presented option,” FIFA said in a statement. “In this context it is worth to note that FIFA and the LOC only ensure that the requirements are met, but the decision on the venue is made by the host city.” Fan Fest locations allow visitors to watch games for free on big screens, and several musical and cultural attractions are also made available. The host cities use Fan Fests to try to boost tourism. The Fan Fest first became part of the official FIFA program in Germany in 2006, following the huge success of unofficial public viewing events in South Korea in 2002. In 2010, the event expanded so that not only did the South African host cities stage Fan Fests, but six other international venues also held events that welcomed more than 6 million football fans across 31 days, according to FIFA.
