Elmo actor Kevin Clash resigns amid sex allegation Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash resigned from “Sesame Street” on Tuesday amid allegations he sexually abused underage boys, bringing an end to a 28-year career in which he turned the furry red monster into one of the most beloved — and lucrative — characters on TV and in toy stores. “Personal matters have diverted attention away from the important work ‘Sesame Street’ is doing and I cannot allow it to go on any longer,” the 52-year-old performer said in a statement. “I am deeply sorry to be leaving and am looking forward to resolving these personal matters privately.” His departure came as a 24-year-old college student, Cecil Singleton, sued Clash for more than $5 million Tuesday, accusing the actor of engaging in sexual behavior with him when he was 15. Singleton charged that Clash made a habit of trolling

gay chat lines for underage boys and meeting them for sex. It was the second such allegation in just over a week. On Nov. 12, a man in his 20s said he had sex with Clash at age 16. A day later, though, the young man recanted, saying their relationship was adult and consensual. Clash was a young puppeteer at “Sesame Street” in the mid-1980s when he was assigned a little-used puppet now known as Elmo and turned him into a star, creating his high-pitched voice and child-like personality. Clash also served as the show’s senior Muppet coordinator and Muppet captain, winning 23 daytime Emmy awards and one prime-time Emmy. In a statement, Sesame Workshop said that “the controversy surrounding Kevin’s personal life has become a distraction that none of us want,” and that Clash had concluded “he can no longer be effective in his job.” “This is a sad day for Sesame

Street,” the company said. Clash did not address the new allegations. He said previously that he had an adult and consensual relationship with the first accuser. The divorced father of a grown daughter, he acknowledged that he is gay. At a news conference Tuesday, Singleton said he and Clash met on a gay chat line when he was 15, and for a two-week period, they had sexual contact but not intercourse. He said he didn’t know what Clash did for a living until he was 19 and Googled the man’s name. “I was shocked when I found out what he did for a living,” said Singleton, a student in criminal psychology who lives in New York but would not say where he goes to school. He said he didn’t consider speaking up until he heard about last week’s accusation. “I thought I was a unique circumstance,” Singleton said. “I did not know that it was something he had done habitually.”

NEW YORK — One Direction’s “Take Me Home” is the taking the boys to the top of the charts — and to new heights. The group’s sophomore album has sold 540,000 in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It’s the year’s third-highest debut behind Taylor Swift’s “Red,” which sold 1.2 million units its first week earlier this month, and Mumford & Sons’ “Babel,” which sold more than 600,000 albums in September in its debut week. “We just want to say a massive thanks to all the fans who have supported us,” band member Harry Styles, 18, said in an interview Tuesday from London. “We can send tweets and thank them, but 140 characters is never going be enough to say how much it means.” The album also debuted at No. 1 in the United Kingdom this week and is No. 1 in more than 30 countries, Columbia Records said Wednesday. The fivesome’s debut, “Up All Night,” came in at No. 2 in the United Kingdom last year; it was just released in March in America, where it hit No. 1 and has achieved platinum status. “ W e were a little

Bali Post DENPASAR - The Association of the Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) Bali feels to get rivaled by the practice of online reservation system applied by the unlicensed travel agency. The existence of agency offering the accommodation packages and the sales of airline ticket through online system reduces the business share of travel agencies (BPW) in Bali. “Aside from reducing the tourist market share, existence of the online agency does not give any benefits that can be enjoyed by people on the island,” said the Secretary General of ASITA Bali, Eddy Putra. Eddy said the agencies did not have an office or base in this country. Most of the agencies admitted if they were only a branch so that their

headquarters was overseas whereas the business in virtual world should be a legal entity and based in the country. It was intended in order the money circulating in tourism sector could be enjoyed by people and not by the business and capital owners living overseas. “The loss we feel due to the presence of those travel agencies certainly reduces the tourism mar-

ket. However, there has been no calculation regarding the loss and we have no research regarding their number,” he said. Meanwhile, Tommy Sutrisno, another official of the ASITA said his party estimated there were many online agencies having no permit in running their operations. Moreover, their existence was difficult to be proved because they were not based in Bali. “By all means, their presence has shifted the market because they are clearly making many room reservations to a number of accommodation facilities in the region,” he said. The owner of AWI Tour, Nyoman Kandia, also stated that so far the

services offered by licensed travel agencies in Bali included the airline ticket, accommodation packages, tour package, meals and other services. However, with the sale of package through online services, travelers could book rooms directly to hotel management without going through intermediaries like travel agencies. “The increasing offer through online services is also made by the airline management. Even, such phenomenon has come to view since 2003. Travelers only need to book ticket through online system of the airline company without going through the intermediaries of travel agencies. Therefore, the sales of airline ticket and accommodation package of travel agencies

diminish,” he explained. In the future, the activities of travel agencies, estimated Kandia, would only be focused on the sales of tour package. Such condition could also encourage the competition among the travel agencies. “Inevitably, travel agencies are required to sell special tour package becoming a featured product,” he said. In response to such condition, Deputy Chairman of ASITA Bali, Ketut Ardana, affirmed that online service was the unavoidable way of managing business at this time. He said the job seekers registered in the Bali Manpower and Resettlement Agency in 2011 reached 46,638 people. Starting January to November 2011, the BP3TKI was able to place as many as 14,078 workers of Bali overseas. Meanwhile, up to October 2012, the BP3TKI sent 10,487 workers of Bali overseas to work in cruise

ships, spa outlets and hotel industry. According to him, the high interest of Balinese people to work overseas was inseparable from their high aristocratic mindset. Most Balinese people were less willing to pursue informal sector because they were more interested in formal sector so that the informal sector was then taken over by migrants from outside Bali. “The formal sector is uncertainly better than formal sector. Necessarily, the informal sector such as selling rice and meat balls should be worked on where so far this sector is widely handled by migrants from outside Bali,” said the man from Sidan village, Gianyar. On the other hand, he added, the role of local government to work on the informal sector was still minimal. The informal sector in Bali remained traditional and lacked of touches. “The government should encourage and gives space to Balinese people to work on the informal sector,” he said. Besides, the government should continue to stimulate the creation of young entrepreneurs so they could create job opportunities

independently. There should be training and development programs to young entrepreneurs so that they could be independent, disbursement of sustainable capital and provision of business location. According to the former head of human resources in the Manpower Agency, Bali government had not owned a clear, focused and comprehensive workforce planning both in terms of macro and micro aspect. Labor condition in Bali was still considered to be poorly organized. Many local job markets were seized

by foreigners so that local residents were excluded. Based on the data of Bali Manpower and Resettlement Agency, a total of 1,455 foreign workers were recorded to seize the ‘pie’ of job opportunities in the formal sector, chiefly in the tourism sector, in 2011. “There must be a real intervention of the provincial and regency/municipal government in designing the protection for local workers and restrict the annexation of job opportunities by foreign workers if the sector can actually be filled in by local workers,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Dark matter detector nearing activation in SD mine Associated Press Writer

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Scientists hoping to detect dark matter deep in a former South Dakota gold mine have taken the last major step before flipping the switch on their delicate experiment and say they may be ready to begin collecting data as early as February. What’s regarded as the world’s most sensitive dark matter detector was lowered earlier this month into a 70,000-gallon water tank nearly a mile beneath the earth’s surface, shrouding it in enough insulation to hopefully isolate dark matter from the cosmic radiation that makes it impossible to detect above ground. And if all goes as planned, the data that begins flowing could answer ageold questions about the universe and its origins, scientists said Monday. “We might well uncover something fantastic,” said Harry Nelson, a professor of physics at University of California, Santa Barbara and a principal investigator on the Large Underground Xenon experiment. “One thing about our field is that it’s kind of brutal in that we know it’s expensive and we work hard to only do experiments that are really important.” This one hasn’t been cheap, at about $10 million, but like the discovery of the Higgs boson — dubbed the “God particle” by some — earlier this year in Switzerland, the detection of

dark matter would be a seismic occurrence in the scientific community. Scientists know dark matter exists by its gravitational pull but, unlike regular matter and antimatter, it’s so far been undetectable. Regular matter accounts for about 4 percent of the universe’s mass, and dark matter makes up about 25 percent. The rest is dark energy, which is also a mystery. While waiting for the water to boil, the sago flour is mixed with water and stirred until it blends finely. Add salt to taste and then filter it. After that, pour it into the boiling water. To cook it, the sago flour should be stir thoroughly. Having formed porridge, pour it into a mold. The second process is to prepare sugar sauce. Mix a sufficient amount of brown sugar with granulated sugar and add some water and pandan leaf. Cook them until the sugar dissolves. Then, remove and filter it. Furthermore, peel and grate the coconut flesh. To serve, the cooked and cool sago flour is cut into small pieces or to taste. Then, put the pieces of cake onto a piece of banana leaf neatly and then sprinkle with grated coconut and top them with sugar sauce. Now, it is ready to serve. SYDNEY — Australian police say they have seized 237 million Australian dollars ($246 million) worth of cocaine and methamphetamine found inside a steamroller shipped from China. Australian Federal Police said Wednesday that they arrested a Canadian man and a U.S. man in Sydney after finding 350 kilograms (770 pounds) of cocaine and meth. The men were charged with importing drugs and face a maximum of life in prison if convicted. It was the police agency’s second major drug bust in a week. MUMBAI, India — India executed the lone surviving gunman from the 2008 terror attack on Mumbai early Wednesday, the country’s home ministry said. Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, a Pakistani citizen, was one of 10 gunmen who rampaged through the streets of India’s financial capital for three days in November 2008, killing 166 people. Kasab was hung in secrecy at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at a jail in Pune, a city near Mumbai, after Indian President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his plea for mercy. Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the home ministry sent Kasab’s mercy plea to Mukherjee on October 16. Mukherjee rejected it on November 5, he said. “It was decided then that on 21st November at 7:30 in the morning he would be hanged. That procedure has been completed today,” Shinde said.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A New Zealand volcano erupted with a brief blast of dark ash Wednesday, canceling flights but causing no significant damage. Schoolchildren and dozens of other hikers who were walking on trails along the mountain’s base were safe. The eruption of Mount Tongariro, its second in less than four months, sent a dark ash plume about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) into the sky. Authorities issued a no-fly alert above the mountain located in the sparsely populated area of central North Island. National carrier Air New Zealand advised travelers that some of its flights could be delayed or canceled because of the eruption. Airline spokeswoman Brigitte Ransom said two flights had been canceled by midafternoon. The New Zealand Herald reported that about 100 middle-school students and teachers were safe after they were hiking on the Tongariro Track at the base of the volcano when it erupted. INDONESIA No plan to report alleged extortionists to KPK

JAKARTA - Minister for State Enterprises Dahlan Iskan said he has no plan yet to report lawmakers he accused of extorting or seeking to extort money from state companies to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). “I have no plan yet. We will see how things to develop,” Dahlan said before a meeting with the Honorary Council of the House of Representative here on Wednesday. Dahlan came to visit the Honorary Council to make clarification about the changes in the name of two lawmakers he accused of extortion. Dahlan has reported to the council a number of lawmakers he accused of extortion or seeking to extort money from state companies when discussing the budget.

Dahlan`s move has caused an uproar in the House of Representatives with some lawmakers challenging him to publicly give the names and bring the case to KPK. Three state companies have also reported to the Council confirming Dahlan`s allegations. Dahlan said he is ready to face threat by some lawmakers including from faction of the ruling party to sue him. They threatened if Dahlan failed to show concrete evidence to back up his allegation they would sue him.

The first option is raising the price of subsidized premium gasoline and diesel oil by Rp500 a liter which is expected to reduce fuel subsidies by Rp21.2 trillion, the acting chief of the ministry`s fiscal policy board, Bambang Brodjonegoro, said here on Tuesday. “The increase of Rp500 is pretty small and less painful because it will have a lower impact on the inflation rate,” he said.

The second option is encouraging all public transport and cargo vehicles to switch to gas, which is expected to reduce fuel subsidies by Rp3.9 trillion in Java and Bali or Rp6.6 trillion nationwide, he said. The third option is banning private cars from using subsidized fuels, he said, adding this option will enable the country to cut fuel subsidies by Rp29.6 trillion in Java and Bali or Rp50.2 trillion across the country. “Ideally, the three options can work altogether,” he said. In addition, the other strategy that the country can pursue the efficient use of subsidies is converting fuel oil to gas, introducing non-fuel oil as alternative energy, encouraging the production

of environmentally friendly cars and hedging oil prices, he said. During the reign of President Suharto, Serangan Island was viewed as prime property and developers began a massive reclamation project that tripled the size of the island and built a bypass land bridge in anticipation of a luxury golf resort. of greedy developers. As a result, Hindu worshippers now visit the island by car or motorbike, which some scholars believe de-sanctifies the overall pilgrimage. Serangan Island is inhabited by over 3,000 people and almost half of them are involved in the fishing industry. Interestingly enough there is also a local Bugis community of approximately 300 Muslims who live side by side with the Hindu’s complete harmony. There is a rare mutual respect that exists between these two ethnic groups. Serangan Island is also known as Turtle Island as for many years it was nesting ground for the Green Sea Turtle. McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh believes that Lewis Hamilton would be fighting for the Formula 1 world championship in Brazil this weekend if the team had got the most out of its car this year. LONDON — Six months after guiding Chelsea to an unlikely Champions League title, Roberto Di Matteo was fired Wednesday with the team on the brink of becoming the first defending champions eliminated from the group stage. Di Matteo, who was hired on a permanent basis in June, was dismissed a day after a 3-0 loss to Juventus in Turin left Chelsea’s title defense in tatters. Chelsea is also struggling in the Premier League, having picked up just two points from its last four games to fall to third place. “The team’s recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season,” Chelsea said in a statement. There was no immediate announcement on a replacement for Di Matteo, but former Liverpool and Inter Milan coach Rafa Benitez has been heavily linked with the job. Pep Guardiola, currently on a break from coaching after leaving Barcelona at the end of last season, will also be a contender. “The club will be making an announcement shortly regarding a new first team manager,” the statement said. Chelsea was in disarray when Di Matteo, then an assistant coach, took over from the fired Andre Villas-Boas in March, initially on a temporary basis. team first to the FA Cup title and then the Champions League, beating Barcelona in the semifinals and then Bayern Munich in the final. Di Matteo, with his typical coolness, was also praised for the way he handled a racism case involving John Terry that engulfed the club. Chelsea is in the middle of another racism incident, having accused a Premier League referee of abusing one of its players. However, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has showed his ruthless edge following the team’s first disappointing run of results this season. Di Matteo’s successor would be the ninth manager under the Russian billionaire since he bought the club in 2003. Chelsea is in third place in Group E behind Shakhtar Donetsk and Juventus with one match left. The Blues next face Danish club FC Nordsjaelland, but they could still be eliminated even if they win depending on the other result. In the Premier League, Chelsea had been leading for much of the season but now trails Manchester City and Manchester United. “The club faces a difficult task ahead in qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League as well as maintaining a strong challenge for the top of the Premier League while competing in three other cup competitions. Our aim is to remain as competitive as possible and challenge strongly on all fronts,” Chelsea said. Chelsea’s next game will be a home Premier League match against Manchester City on Sunday.
