BANGLI - Two Indonesia’s ministers, respectively Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Jero Wacik and Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu, declared the Batur Geopark on Saturday (Nov 17). Having been admitted as a geopark in a conference of the UNESCO held in Arouca, Portugal on September 20, 2012, Batur Geopark was then included as the 89th of the 90 members of the Global Geopark Network (GGN) worldwide.

On that occasion, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources and Minister of Culture and Creative Economy requested the regent Bangli to immediately make geosite zone in Batur to protect the historic sites of the terrestrial civilization and environmental preservation. Having been established, in the next four years the Batur GGN should be able to maintain its position because it would be reassessed by the UNESCO assessor. CO was carried out by his party on a working visit to New York. At that time, Indonesia had not had any GGN whereas the Island of Bali in particular and Indonesia in general had a lot of volcanological potentials. In fact, in order to qualify for the GGN was not an easy move though it had been attempted seriously by working hand in hand. As conceived and done seriously in 2008 when he was the Minister of Culture and Tourism, the hard work could just reap the result four years later.

Besides, the Pererenan Beach also needed a touch of arrangement such as for the parking area, street lighting and other public facilities.

By doing so, his party expected to boost the tourist arrivals to the beach. “We’ve proposed it through development plan meeting and hope our aspirations can be realized,” said Sukerasena. He said the current arrangement of Pererenan Beach was limited to the construction of breakwater along 170 meters equipped with pedestrian path. The funds sourced from central government grant worth IDR 4.25 billion. His party hoped another arrangement such as the construction of pathway from the beach to village area as well as the bridge to facilitate the community accessing the beach as a public space and a destination of melasti procession. “Other than for tourism activities, a total of nine villages in Mengwi subdistrict and one

village in Abiansemal subdistrict harness the beach as destination of melasti so that we hope the coastal arrangement will pay attention to the environmental preservation and continue to support the ritual activities,” said Sukaresana. Meanwhile, a member of Commission B of the Badung House, I Nyoman Satria, said the Pererenan Beach had undergone rapid development. The beach indeed drew the interest of many tourists and investors. It was considered to have a great potential to become a leading tourist destination in Badung Regency. “The Badung House is ready to fight and urge the Badung government to make arrangements and complete the infrastructure of Pererenan Beach as a tourist attraction,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Relaxing Is Stressful for Some

Deep breaths, yoga, a lazy day at the beach: While some may find those activities soothing, their mere mention can set other people’s nerves on edge. Now, a new method may help therapists measure just how much relaxing stresses people out. The new tool, which will be presented Saturday (Nov. 16) at the annual convention of the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, should help therapists know when to say “breathe in…” and when to steer clear of relaxation techniques. “For a lot of different anxiety disorders, we use relaxation as a treatment,” said Christina Lumberto, a psychology doctoral candidate at the University of Cincinnati. “But for the people who don’t like that, it’s not a helpful treatment.” In the 1980s, psychologists first noticed that some people doing relaxation exercises would actually get quite anxious. “At first, you do see decreased heart rate, decreased breathing,

things that indicate relaxation,” Lumberto told LiveScience. “After they have achieved a relaxed state, all of a sudden everything just spikes back up.” Because so many modern anxiety treatments use mindbody relaxation techniques such as meditation, Lumberto and her colleagues wanted to identify patients for whom these techniques might backfire. The survey asks people to rate, on a scale of 0 to 5, how much they agree with statements like, “It scares me when my breathing becomes deeper;” and, “I hate getting massages because of the feeling it creates when my muscles relax.” The questionnaire captures the

myriad reasons why people might have trouble winding down, from feeling lazy to an intense fear of being out of control. “Some people don’t like to relax because of the physical changes, the sensations of their muscles relaxing,” she said. “Other people will say they don’t like relaxing because they’re actually worried about whether or not they’re relaxing correctly.” People who fear calming techniques may be more sensitive to changes in their normal physical state, such as changes in heart rate or blood pressure, regardless of whether they’re due to relaxation or to anxiety, Lumberto said. The relaxation-phobic tend to be more anxious in general, she said. (Oddly, those who fear relaxation are also more prone to asthma, Lumberto’s past research has found.)

Two years after Tycho Brahe was exhumed from his grave in Prague, chemical analyses of his corpse show that mercury poisoning did not kill the prolific 16th-century astronomer. The results should put to bed rumors that Brahe was murdered when he most likely died of a burst bladder. Separately, tests revealed that Brahe’s famously “silver” prosthetic nose was actually made out of brass. Born in Denmark in 1546, Brahe served as an astronomer for the Danish king before settling in Prague in the court of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II. Brahe is known for making the most accurate measurements of stars and planets without the aid of a telescope, proving that comets are objects in space and not in Earth’s atmosphere, and hiring the not-yet-famous German astronomer Johannes Kepler as his assistant. Brahe was long thought to have died from a bladder infection after politeness kept him from excusing himself to use the bathroom during a royal banquet in October 1601, causing his bladder to rupture. However, scientists who opened Brahe’s grave in 1901 to mark the 300th anniversary of his death claimed to find

mercury in his remains, fueling rumors that the astronomer was poisoned. Some even accused a jealous Kepler of the crime. But the new results don’t point to any such intrigue. While analyses of Brahe’s teeth are not yet complete, tests on his bones and beard hairs show that mercury concentrations in his body were not high enough to have killed him, the team of Danish and Czech researchers said. Brahe’s mercury levels even dropped to the low end of normal in the weeks leading up to his death, tests on Brahe’s beard revealed. “In fact, chemical analyses of the bones indicate that Tycho Brahe was not exposed to an abnormally high mercury load in the last five to ten years of his life,” said researcher Kaare Lund Rasmussen, an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Southern Denmark. In another finding, the team reported that the silver nose piece Brahe famously wore after losing part of his own nose in a duel was not actually silver. Though the prosthesis has not been found, greenish stains around the nasal area of Brahe’s corpse contained traces of copper and zinc, indicating that his fake nose was made of brass, the researchers said.

Furthermore, Sutrisna said the coral reef on Pemuteran Beach was first cultivated with low-voltage electricity energy of the PLN. During the passage, the electricity utilization gave less optimal results. Since then, the technology was replaced with biorock system. With this technology, the coral reef on Pemuteran Beach was energized with electrical energy obtained from the wave power generating low voltage. In the future, similar technology would be developed in other coastal regions of Buleleng. “Surely we will apply this success in other coastal regions, so that coral reef can grow and be well maintained,” he explained. Meanwhile, one of the tourism businesspeople at Pemuteran village, Anak Agung Gede Prana, said the coral reef cultivated by biorock technology was quite successful. Even, the successful application had given a good result and the UNDP had awarded him an international recognition for the success of preserving the coral reef in Pemuteran. “This biorock activates the coral reef. Armed with the success, the other reef can be well preserved and maintained,” he explained.

On the other hand, Prana said though his party could have managed to preserve the coral reef in Pemuteran, he still worried if the coral reefs would be experiencing problems due to marine debris from the local rivers emptying out into the Pemuteran Beach. To prevent such happening, his party teamed up with other tourism businesspeople, community leaders, and beach customary guard (pecalang) of Pemuteran to appeal to residents not to litter. In addition, another attempt taken was to get people to work together in keeping the waters that have provided positive benefits for tourism development in Pemuteran. “Moreover, when it rains the rivers in Pemuteran can bring along rubbish and this can threaten the coral reefs having grown well. However, we have called and invited residents to keep and preserve the ocean that has provided benefits for tourism in Pemuteran,” he explained. (kmb)

FRANKFURT — Europe’s government-debt crisis is no longer panicking financial markets. But it won’t end until the region’s economy starts growing strongly again. And that will be a while. The economy of the 17 countries that use the euro has shrunk for two straight quarters — a common definition of a recession — and analysts forecast little or no growth until 2014. Without growth, there won’t be enough tax revenue to help countries like Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal narrow their deficits and slow the expansion of their debts. Their debt burdens as a percentage of economic output, a key measure of fiscal health, look worse by the day. The eurozone’s combined debts are equal to about 93 percent of the region’s gross domestic product this year and that figure is forecast to rise to peak at 94.5 percent next year. In 2009, the eurozone’s debtto-GDP ratio was 80 percent. A ratio above 90 percent is generally considered high and can put pressure on governments’ borrowing costs. “The worrying thing about the projections is, the peak seems to keep moving,” says Raoul Ruparel of the Open Europe think tank. The panic in European financial markets has eased in recent months largely because of aggressive action by the European Central Bank. The ECB said on Sept. 6 that it was willing to buy unlimited amounts of government bonds issued by countries struggling to pay their debts. That pledge quickly lowered borrowing costs for Spain and Italy, which earlier in the year faced the same kind of financial pressure that forced Ireland, Greece and Spain to seek bailouts. But stemming the crisis and heading off a default by one or more countries aren’t the same as stimulating growth. BEIJING — Chinese Premier Wen Jiaobao will focus on economic cooperation at meetings of Southeast Asian leaders this week that will include President Barack Obama and not on regional territorial disputes. Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying said Saturday that China is more interested in deepening economic ties in the region as a stabilizing force in the global economy than focusing on lingering disputes in the South China Seas. “We need to focus on cooperation and development and send correct signals to the market,” Fu said. “We should not be distracted by some problems and deviate from our direction.” Tensions have flared recently over maritime disputes in the region, including rival claims by China, the Philippines and Vietnam to South China Sea islands and waters that are believed to be rich in gas and oil and straddle busy shipping routes. Fu told a news conference that China and other countries bordering the South China sea have successfully managed their disputes and prevented them from escalating into major conflicts. “Dialogues, negotiations and management have given us peace and stability, allowing us to focus on economic development and make achievements,” Fu said. She reiterated China’s stand of resolving disputes on a bilateral basis instead of bringing them up at regional or international meetings. The meetings start Sunday in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh and are organized by the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations. China is not part of the group but holds talks with it. Leaders from Japan and South Korea will also take part. It has not been decided whether Wen will meet Obama separately, Fu said. While in Cambodia, Wen will make a formal visit to the country and hold talks with Prime Minister Hun Sen, Fu said. The two sides are expected to sign documents on economic technology and education. He then makes a state visit to Thailand before ending his trip on Wednesday. Wen will meet member of the Thai royal family and hold talks with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on a range of issues, including trade and investment, Fu said.

According to him, these entrepreneurs should offer competitive prices, if they want to compete and maintain strong business ties in the domestic market. He also argued that these entrepreneurs will be able to sell their products at competitive prices, since there are many banks and financial institutions that are willing to provide loans. “It depends on how these entrepreneurs use the loans. The poor quality of human resources is one of the problems that entrepreneurs face in Bali,” he expressed. Therefore, Ramantha advised the people of Bali to reduce imports and increase exports, to boost the regional economy. “Besides offering competitive prices, entrepreneurs should also have a workable marketing strategy,” he said. “When I say `workable marketing strategy`, it is not just limited to advertising. In fact, the best marketing strategy is to maintain the quality of the products and stick to the specified delivery period,” he added. Meanwhile, Gede Made Sadguna, Deputy Chief of Indonesia’s Central Bank (BI), in Denpasar, said that strengthening SMEs in Bali is very important, since SMEs can survive economic shocks. “SMEs remain strong, amidst economic shocks, compared to other kinds of businesses, because SMEs usually grow from small businesses, which have been through the selection process,” he said. Entrepreneurship through SMEs, according to Sadguna, should be developed to reduce the regional economic dependence on the central government. Thus, people with oral and maxillofacial problems would then received free treatment from the government. Since 1986, there have been around 3,000 people underwent oral and maxillofacial surgery in East Nusa Tenggara. The government has set a target to yield 3,400 specialist doctors in 2014. “They would comprise not only oral and maxillofacial specialists but also in other specialties,” Mukti said.

China’s military pledges loyalty to new leader Xi Associated Press Writer

BEIJING — China’s massive military pledged its loyalty to new Communist Party leader Xi Jinping on Friday, while reiterating its mission to follow the party’s “absolute leadership” despite scattered calls for it to come under government control. The men and women of the 2.3 million-member People’s Liberation Army also thanked President Hu Jintao and other outgoing leaders for their guidance over the past decade. That was a reflection of the military’s happiness with Hu’s decision to hand the chairmanship of the party commission that oversees the military to Xi, rather than holding on to it for two years as his predecessor, Jiang Zemin, did. The “military will absolutely take orders from the party center, the military commission, and commission chairman Xi Jinping,” said an editorial in the official People’s Liberation Army Daily. “At any time and under any circumstances, we will take our orders from the party center, the military commission, and commission chairman Xi Jinping, and be absolutely loyal and reliable,” it said. Xi became chairman of the party military commission on Thursday, the same day he took over as party leader from Hu,

who will retain the title of state president until next spring, when he will hand it over to Xi. Xi, who currently holds the title of vice president, paid tribute to Hu and other outgoing leaders himself on Thursday, thanking them for “leading all the people of the nation in unity and achieving glorious achievements acclaimed by all the world.” Hu’s decision to step down from the military commission surprised many, and won plaudits from the military, which had in the past expressed concerns about divided leadership. Hu’s relinquishing of the post completes only the second smooth transfer of power in party history, underscoring the party’s hopes of institutionalizing its often obscure and secretive workings and spurring reforms to allow greater participation in decision making by rank-and-file members. “I think this has a huge significance,” said Zhao Chu, a Shanghai-based scholar who specializes in military issues. “It breaks away

from the tradition. It will allow better coordination between the party and the military.” The handover of power comes as the military is rapidly modernizing with the help of double-digit annual percentage increases in the defense budget and major technical advances, including the development of two prototype stealth fighters and the launch of the country’s first aircraft carrier. China claims those are purely for defense, although they are seen by its neighbors as adding bite to its territorial claims off its east coast and in the South China Sea. Reform-minded intellectuals and some outspoken officers have urged the People’s Liberation Army to transfer its ultimate loyalty to the state, rather than the party, saying that would help professionalize the armed forces. ASSIUT, Egypt — A speeding train that crashed into a bus carrying Egyptian children to their kindergarten on Saturday killed 51 and prompted a wave of anger against a government under mounting pressure to rectify the former regime’s legacy of neglect. The crash, which killed children between four and six years old and three adults, led to local protests and accusations from outraged Egyptians that President Mohammed Morsi is failing to deliver on the demands of last year’s uprising for basic rights, dignity and social justice. The accident left behind a mangled shell of a bus twisted underneath the blood-splattered train outside the city of Assiut, some 200 miles (320 kilometers) south of Cairo. Children’s body parts, their books, schoolbags and tiny socks were strewn along the tracks. Um Ibrahim, a mother whose three children were on the bus, pulled her hair in grief. “My children! I didn’t feed you before you left,” she wailed in horror. A witness said the train pushed the bus along the tracks for nearly a kilometer (half a mile). As one man picked up pieces of shattered limbs he screamed: “Only God can help!” More than a dozen injured children were being treated in two different facilities, many with severed limbs and in critical condition. Several hours after the accident, Morsi appeared on state television, promising an investigation and financial compensation for victims’ families. KUALA LUMPUR — Three Malaysian policemen have been charged with raping an Indonesian maid in a case that has sparked outrage in Indonesia. Lawyer Rosli Ismail says the three officers pleaded not guilty to charges of raping the woman at a police station in northern Penang state earlier this month. The woman was detained for reportedly failing to produce a passport. He says the men face up to 20 years in jail and whipping if convicted. The case has sparked outrage and protests in Indonesia, which recently lifted a three-year ban on sending domestic workers to Malaysia imposed after a spate of abuse by Malaysian employers. Rosli, a lawyer for the Indonesian Embassy, said Friday the woman is expected to testify when the trial begins in December before being sent home.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s economic growth is predicted to rise 6.4 percent in 2013, driven by investments in the mining sector and a significant increase in domestic consumption, according to economist Ikhsan Modjo. “I am optimistic that economic growth could reach 6.4 percent by 2013, even though oil and gas issues are still in transition and are a different entity from mining issues,” said Ikhsan, an economist from the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef), here on Saturday. He noted that economic growth fell to 6.1 percent in the second quarter of 2012 because of the poor economic situation. “However, the investment was still stable,” Modjo noted. “The economic growth in 2013 is expected to fluctuate due to a number of new heads of state performance across the world,” he added. Sharing his opinion, Indonesian Forum for Budget Transparency (FITRA) general secretary Yuna Farhan stated that Indonesian economic growth will not affect social inequality if the budget is optimally absorbed. “As of now, managing the budget’s funding has not been well-coordinated, such as the proposal submitted from the ministry to parliament,” he said. Previously, Central Bank/Indonesian Bank (BI) predicted that the nation’s economic growth in 2013 would reach 6.5 percent, since international demand for Indonesian commodities is predicted to be higher than in 2012. “We are optimistic that we can achieve the target of 6.5 percent,” Indonesian Bank’s Director of Economic Research and Monetary Policy Perry Warjiyo noted.
