LOS ANGELES — DC Comics will retain its rights to Superman after a judge ruled Wednesday that the heirs of one of the superhero’s co-creators signed away their ability to reclaim copyrights to the Man of Steel roughly 20 years ago. The ruling means that DC Comics and its owner Warner Bros. will retain all rights to continue using the character in books, films, television and other mediums, including a the film reboot planned for next year. DC Comics sued the heirs of artist Joe Shuster in 2010, seeking a ruling that they lost their ability to try to reclaim the superhero’s copyrights in 1992. U.S. District Court Judge Otis Wright II agreed, stating that Shuster’s sister and brother relinquished any chance to reclaim Superman copyrights in exchange for annual pension payments from DC Comics. Shuster and writer Jerry Siegel created Superman, who made his comic book debut in 1938 in Action Comics (hash)1. Both men battled for increased compensation for the superhero throughout their lives and Siegel’s heirs have also fought DC for a stake in copyrights to Superman. Shuster’s heirs had argued that the copyright agreements could be terminated under
provisions that allowed creators of works made before 1978 a mechanism to reclaim their rights. Wright ruled that the decision by Shuster’s sister to accept higher annual payments created a new agreement and the pre-1978 rights no longer applied. “We respectfully disagree with its factual and legal conclusions, and it is surprising given that the judge appeared to emphatically agree with our position at the summary judgment hearing,” the Shusters’ attorney Marc Toberoff wrote in a statement. NEW YORK — When two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks found out he was being honored by the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity at the New York Public Library, he remembered he owed a couple of books. “I’ve got to turn them in from 1977,” Hanks said on the red carpet before going into the gala event. Hanks, accompanied by his wife Rita Wilson, joked that when he got the call from the foundation, he responded, “No, this is the Hanks house,” followed by “really” and “why?” Hanks posed on the red carpet with Wilson, his son Colin, of “Dexter” fame, and Wiesel too. Hanks’ consistent thoughtfulness and concern with his charitable endeavors earned him the honor. He holds it higher than his acting accolades, but also realizes that the two are connected. He’s proud of the work he does, and by virtue of being in a few successful movies, feels that put him in a position to be altruistic. “We work very hard in a business that deserves and earns every bit of ridicule that we heap upon it. But at the end of the day you got to wake up in the morning and try to make the world a better place,” Hanks said. Denpasar – The Vice Governor of Bali, A.A Ngurah Puspayoga firmly reject the renting of the mangrove forest in Ngurah Rai to investor. He even urged the permit must be revoked. “Related to the renting of the forest for 55 years, I must say that I have different opinion with the governor. I want the mangrove forest keep functioning as before. Let’s preserve the forest and not use it as tourism accommodation development,” he explained on Wednesday, October 17, 2012.
In addition to revoke the permit, Puspayoga also urge the Mayor of Denpasar to halt the permit to build the accommodation such as restaurants or hotels in the area.

Truck hit car and house at Sumbersari Negara (Bali Post) –
The accident happened again at Denpasar-Gilimanuk with this time a truck hit a car at a rise in Sumbersari, Melaya last Wednesday (17/10) around 5 pm local time. Luckily there are no casualties yet it did cause a traffic jam. The truck that carried small packaged tea drinks (the gelas) H 1875 GP drien by Iwan Hidayat (23) fom Jombang, East Java hit a Xenia B 1332 OB driven by Sukiman (45) from Lampung. According to Iwan he was coming to Gilimanuk and during a rise at Sumbersari he was trying to avoid a truck bringing concrete poles L 8187 UR driven by Agus Suprianto from Jakarta as it broke down in the middle of the rise and blocking everyone passing by. While trying to pass it from the right, the truck Iwan drove couldn’t make it and hit the Xenia at the back. Trying to avoid any further damage, he tried to move to the right yet hit a house on the roadside. Meanwhile Sukiman was trying to move back as well but due to there are many motorcycles queuing then he chose to stay. The incident could not be avoided causing the car flipped. Suningrat, the owner of the house admitted to have experience loss at least IDR 10 Million as his walls are torn down. Officers are still on the roads arranging the total traffic by evening. (kmb26)

Three other areas have been included in the world cultural heritage (WBD) such as the Taman Ayun Temple area, Pakerisan Watershed and Ulun Danu Batur Temple. Section Head of the Cultural Heritage Objects, Directorate General of Culture in the Ministry of Education and Culture, Yunus Arbi, said the proposal of national strategic area determination was also undertaken to the area of Borobudur Temple and Sangiran that had been included in the world cultural heritage earlier than the subak system by UNESCO. “The proposal to include the Bali’s world cultural heritage in the national strategic area should be carefully assessed and strengthened. The central government itself always gives a positive appreciation to the proposals of the region,” he said. He said the criteria regarding the national strategic area had been set up in the government regulation. It was just required a proposal from
the region and it would certainly give additional benefit to the income of local farmers. In relation to the maintenance of the world cultural heritage, the opportunity for Indonesia to build an international network was very possible. “Many countries have the world cultural heritage with the conditions of terraced rice fields as found in Bali. However, the system applied is different,” he said. He also mentioned that China, the Philippines and Japan also had the world cultural heritage with a similar cultural background to Bali. In the future, Indonesia could establish a network that could serve as a means of sharing the experiences. “Such an idea can be followed up in the future because it can provide benefit to many coun-
tries,” he affirmed. As known, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy would develop 50 national tourist destinations up to 2025. The government arranged the National Tourism Plan which contained a systemic framework and approach in conjunction with the national tourism development, including the development of such 50 destinations. Such fifty destinations were divided into 88 national tourism strategic areas and 222 national tourism development regions assessed to have a potential. To that end, it was required a selfpreparation and commitment to develop the regional tourism. Tuwed Village Market turns dormant Negara (Bali Post)—
Due to lacking of visitors and less strategic location, the Tuwed Village Market in Melaya has been dormant since three years ago. The market located in front of the official residence of the SDN 3 Tuwed elementary school has long been left by traders. They claimed to leave the market because there were no visiting consumers. As consequence, they suffered a loss to peddle there. According to information, the market was built in 2009 and the budget was obtained from the National Program for Community Empowerment (PNPM). The rural market project spent a budget worth IDR 62.689 million. Initially, the project works ran smoothly. However, after the market was accomplished no people were interested in shopping there. When operated, the traders sold vegetables, roasted suckling pig and various fries. After a few months, those traders decided to discontinue their peddling as lacking of visitors. The market allocated for Tuwed and surrounding rural communities looked silent. Since the beginning, the development plan had reaped the pros and cons regarding the location where it was built. Community and traders preferred to sell at the more strategic junction of Tuwed. Chief of the Tuwed Village Assembly (BPD), Ketut Toya, accompanied by Chairman of the People’s Empowerment Agency (LPM), Made Sukarta, confirmed on Wednesday (Oct 17) that since several years ago the village market had been rarely used and lacked of visitors. However, the village authority was still attempting to draw traders having the interest to contract the kiosks so that it could generate revenue for the village. The village market had one unit of building divided into three sections over 300 square meters of land. Headman of Tuwed, I Ketut Suarna, when asked for his confirmation said the journey of the village market lived through ups and downs. The traders tended to sell at the junction area of Tuwed because the location was more crowded. According to him, the market building had only been used for three months. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Meningitis deaths rise, FDA faces new questions Reuters
WASHINGTON/BOSTON The death toll from a meningitis outbreak linked to contaminated steroids jumped to 19 on Wednesday, while U.S. lawmakers pressed federal health regulators to explain what they knew about the pharmacy that produced the drugs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said four more deaths had been confirmed in the last 24 hours, including two in Tennessee, the state hardest hit with eight deaths since the infections were discovered in late September. Virginia and Florida each reported one new death. The number of new cases of fungal meningitis linked to steroid injections from the New England Compounding Center rose by 14 to 245, the CDC said in its latest daily update. Two additional infections have not been confirmed as meningitis. The daily tally was a reminder that one of the worst U.S. health scares in recent years has not been contained, despite emergency steps to recall the medications and stop the use of products from New England Compounding Center of Massachusetts.
NECC has recalled all of its medications and health authorities are warning patients who may have been treated with the drugs to watch for symptoms. Special agents from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration raided NECC’s Framingham facility near Boston late on Tuesday as calls in Congress grew for a criminal investigation. The FDA is also under scrutiny. While it has limited authority to regulate pharmacies like NECC, it had flagged violations at the company as recently as 2006. On Wednesday a U.S. House of Representatives panel investigating the outbreak gave the FDA until October 31 to turn over its documents related to NECC, including communications with state regulators and the agency’s commissioner, dating back to 2004. The panel said it heard from FDA staff last week that the agency had been assured by NECC of the pharmacy’s compliance in early 2007. But the FDA representatives could not confirm whether the agency then took any steps to ensure corrective measures had been taken. An FDA spokesman said the agency had received the letter and would respond directly to the panel.

Still, most support the idea of sending a mission to explore the new discovery. The scorched, rocky planet has about Earth’s mass, but circles the sun Alpha Centauri B at a distance of just 3.6 million miles (6 million kilometers), making it likely that its surface is covered in molten lava. The alien planet’s existence suggests that others might lurk farther out from the star, just far enough for liquid water — and possibly life — to exist. Though the constellation is our next-door neighbor, many San Franciscans had never heard of it. “I have no idea what it is,” said Paul Thomas, a cook waiting for a bus here. While more than half of the 13 people polled said that Alpha Centauri was a star system, only one knew it was about 4 light-years away from Earth. None knew it would take about 40,000 years to get there on a spacecraft like NASA’s Voyager 1, though guesses ranged from two days to 150,000 years. “I would have known when I went to space camp when I was 9,” said bartender Anya Aplin. America’s favorite dietary supplements, multivitamins, modestly lowered the risk for cancer in healthy male doctors who took them for more than a decade, the first large study to test these pills has found. The result is a surprise because many studies of individual vitamins have found they don’t help prevent chronic diseases and some even seemed to raise the risk of cancer. In the new study, multivitamins cut the chance of developing cancer by 8 percent. That is less effective than a good diet, exercise and not smoking, each of which can lower cancer risk by 20 percent to 30 percent, cancer experts say. Multivitamins also may have different results in women, younger men or people less healthy than those in this study. “It’s a very mild effect and personally I’m not sure it’s significant enough to recommend to anyone” although it is promising, said Dr. Ernest Hawk, vice president of cancer prevention at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
and formerly of the National Cancer Institute. “At least this doesn’t suggest a harm” as some previous studies on single vitamins have, he said. Hawk reviewed the study for the American Association for Cancer Research, which is meeting in Anaheim, Calif., where the study was to be presented on Wednesday. It also was published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association. About one-third of U.S. adults and as many as half of those over 50 take multivitamins. They are marketed as a kind of insurance policy against bad eating. Yet no government agency recommends their routine use “regardless of the quality of a person’s diet,” says a fact sheet from the federal Office of Dietary Supplements. Some fads, such as the antioxidant craze over vitamins A and E and beta-carotene, backfired when studies found more health risk with those supplements, not less. Many of those were single vitamins in larger doses than the “100 percent of daily value” amounts that multivitamins typically contain.

DENPASAR — A 17-year-old Japanese boy was sentenced to six months in prison Thursday for possessing a small amount of marijuana while vacationing with family on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali. The teen could have received 12 years under Indonesia’s tough narcotics laws. Judge Gunawan Tri Budiono said in Denpasar district court that although the boy “spoiled the image of Bali as tourist destination,” he showed leniency because the boy is young and bought the drugs for personal use. The teen, who cannot be named under Indonesian law because of his age, admitted buying 2.6 grams (0.09 ounces) of marijuana for personal use. He has been detained in a police cell since Aug. 8, after buying the marijuana near popular Kuta beach while vacationing with his mother. He will be credited for time served. The judge said the boy would be freed in February and immediately deported. Last year, a 14-year-old Australian boy avoided prison after serving two months in an Indonesian detention center for buying drugs. The court also showed leniency after he expressed remorse and able to prove it he bought the drugs for personal use.

Chairman of the People Empowerment Agency (LPM) of Kuta, Nyoman Graha Wicaksana, said on Wednesday (Oct 17) the taxis hanging out in Kuta, especially around Jalan Legian, had become one of the main causes of congestion. This condition had long been complained. Restriction on the number of taxis operating in Kuta had also been implemented, especially prohibition to taxis hanging out in Kuta area. Unfortunately, the effort had not been maximal. Moreover, the discipline by the Bali Transportation Agency, having the authority in this matter, was assessed to be sluggish. As a result, there were still taxi drivers remaining stubborn. Even, taxi drivers were
sleeping while waiting for passengers. On Monday night (Oct 15), around 10:00 p.m., with the elements of LPM Kuta, the Kuta community as well as the Transportation, Communication and Informatics Agency of Badung had already made a raid against the taxis. For example, the property acquisition fee (BPHTB) just reached 37.15 percent and the quarry C reached 23.14 percent. To that end, the Revenue Agency was expected to collect the regional potential remaining to scatter that could possibly provide addition to the regionally generated revenue. It also follows the non-existence of repair budget allocation for the utility of Municipality Waterworks in the regional budget amendment 2012. “We do hope the concern of central government against the repair of the damaged utilities caused by the underpass project. In the last meeting, Deputy Secretary of Vice President in charge of Economic Affairs promised to make every effort to find out a solution to this issue,” said Acting Director of the PDAM Badung, I Nyoman Sukanada, recently. He explained the utility losses were initially estimated to reach IDR 6 billion. Considering there
had been a change in design, the losses suffered by the PDAM Badung was only about IDR 1 billion. Implementer of the underpass project had appealed to the utility owners including the PDAM Badung to cover the cost of repairs. Some owners of the utilities such as the PLN and Telkom had stated their capacity. However, according to Sukanada, it was possible because the cost of repair was relatively small and the utility owners were assessed
to be able to finance themselves. “It’s unlike the case of the PDAM Badung,” he said. Sukanada admitted to have asked for funds to Badung Government as the owner of the PDAM Badung to cover the repairs. However, according to Badung Government, the cost of utility loss was entirely the authority of central government. The contract was largely based on expediency, U.S. officials have said, since no one knew how long the temporary mission would remain in the Libyan city. The cradle of last year’s uprising that ended Muammar Gaddafi’s 42-year rule, Benghazi has been plagued by rising violence in recent months. Security practices at the diplomatic compound, where Blue Mountain guards patrolled with flashlights and batons instead of guns, have come under U.S. government scrutiny in the wake of the September 11 attack in Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. Federal contract data shows that the Benghazi security contract, worth up to $783,284, was listed as a “miscellaneous” award, not

Greece is stuck in its worst downturn since World War Two and must make at least 11.5 billion euros of cuts to satisfy the “troika” of the European Commission, European Central Bank and IMF, and secure the next tranche of a 130-billion-euro bailout. “Just once, the government ought to reject the troika’s absurd demands,” said Yannis Panagopoulos, head of the GSEE private sector union, one of two major unions that represent about 2 million people, or half of Greece’s workforce. “Agreeing to catastrophic measures means driving society to despair and the consequences as well as the protests will then be indefinite,” he said. The Finnish group is now pinning its hopes on new, top-of-the-range Lumia 820 and 920 phones, which use Microsoft’s latest Windows 8 software and are due to hit stores in early November. Analysts say sales in the pre-holiday season may determine Nokia’s chances of long-term survival. “Competition is fierce,” said Eric Beaudet at Natixis Securities. “The story really will be whether it can ramp up with the Windows 8 phones.” Analysts have written off the third quarter as a weak one for Nokia without new Lumia phones to compensate for a heavy drop in sales of older models. They are forecasting an underlying loss - which strips out one-off items - of around 11 euro cents per share, according to the average forecast of 35 analysts. That would be the third straight quarter of underlying losses. Military to follow up on acts of violence against journalists: Commander Antara
JAKARTA - Commander of the Indonesian Defence Forces (TNI) Admiral Agus Suhartono has ordered the Air Force chief to take legal steps against personnel who attacked journalists covering the crash of an Air Force fighter jet on Tuesday. Speaking to journalists at the Presidential Office here on Wednesday, the TNI chief said that soldiers of the Air Force were actually trying to prevent residents from coming close to the crash site in order to safeguard them from the dangers posed by the crashed jet. However, they used excessive force while doing their duty, Admiral Suhartono said. “I understand that the conduct while guarding the site was beyond propriety. Therefore, in my capacity as the commander of the TNI, I extend my apology to the affected people. I have ordered the Air Force chief to take legal steps against the soldiers who committed the violent acts,” Admiral Suhartono added. “I am concerned about the incident. Therefore, in my capacity as the TNI commander, I apologize to the journalists involved and to their publications,” the TNI commander said. He added that the TNI had ethicsbased standard procedures to be followed while carrying out its tasks and had eight obligations that must be fulfilled. “If they had adhered to these principles, the incident would not have happened,” he said. ATHENS - Greek workers walked off the job for the second time in three weeks on Thursday, hoping to show EU leaders meeting in Brussels that a new wave of wage and pension cuts will only worsen their plight after five years of recession. Streets emptied in central Athens as most business and public sector activity ground to a halt at the start of the 24-hour strike called by the country’s two biggest labour unions, ADEDY and GSEE. Greece is stuck in its worst downturn since World War Two and must make at least 11.5 billion euros of cuts to satisfy the “troika” of the European Commission, European Central Bank and IMF, and secure the next tranche of a 130-billion-euro bailout. “Just once, the government ought to reject the troika’s absurd demands,” said Yannis Panagopoulos, head of the GSEE private sector union, one of two major unions that represent about 2 million people, or half of Greece’s workforce. “Agreeing to catastrophic measures means driving society to despair and the consequences as well as the protests will then be indefinite,” he said. European Union leaders will
try to bridge their differences over plans for a banking union at their two-day summit which starts on Thursday but no substantial decisions are expected, reviving concerns about complacency in tackling the debt crisis which exploded three years ago in Greece. The strike brought much of the country to a standstill. Ships stayed in port, Athens public transport was disrupted and hospitals were working on emergency staff, while public offices, ministries and many shops including bakeries were shut. Five separate marches later on Thursday are expected to culminate in demonstrations outside parliament, which in the past have ended in clashes between police and protesters. The Finnish group is now pinning its hopes on new, top-of-the-range Lumia 820 and 920 phones, which use Microsoft’s latest Windows 8 software and are due to hit stores in early November. Analysts say sales in the pre-holiday season may determine Nokia’s chances of long-term survival. “Competition is fierce,” said Eric Beaudet at Natixis Securities. “The story really will be whether it can ramp up with the Windows 8 phones.” Analysts have written off the third quarter as a weak one for Nokia without new Lumia phones to compensate for a heavy drop in sales of older models. They are forecasting an underlying loss - which strips out one-off items - of around 11 euro cents per share, according to the average forecast of 35 analysts. That would be the third straight quarter of underlying losses. JAKARTA - Commander of the Indonesian Defence Forces (TNI) Admiral Agus Suhartono has ordered the Air Force chief to take legal steps against personnel who attacked journalists covering the crash of an Air Force fighter jet on Tuesday. Speaking to journalists at the Presidential Office here on Wednesday, the TNI chief said that soldiers of the Air Force were actually trying to prevent residents from coming close to the crash site in order to safeguard them from the dangers posed by the crashed jet. However, they used excessive force while doing their duty, Admiral Suhartono said. “I understand that the conduct while guarding the site was beyond propriety. Therefore, in my capacity as the commander of the TNI, I extend my apology to the affected people. I have ordered the Air Force chief to take legal steps against the soldiers who committed the violent acts,” Admiral Suhartono added. “I am concerned about the incident. Therefore, in my capacity as the TNI commander, I apologize to the journalists involved and to their publications,” the TNI commander said. He explained the utility losses were initially estimated to reach IDR 6 billion. Considering there
had been a change in design, the losses suffered by the PDAM Badung was only about IDR 1 billion. The contract was largely based on expediency, U.S. officials have said, since no one knew how long the temporary mission would remain in the Libyan city. The cradle of last year’s uprising that ended Muammar Gaddafi’s 42-year rule, Benghazi has been plagued by rising violence in recent months. Security practices at the diplomatic compound, where Blue Mountain guards patrolled with flashlights and batons instead of guns, have come under U.S. government scrutiny in the wake of the September 11 attack in Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. Federal contract data shows that the Benghazi security contract, worth up to $783,284, was listed as a “miscellaneous” award, not

Meningitis deaths rise, FDA faces new questions Reuters
WASHINGTON/BOSTON The death toll from a meningitis outbreak linked to contaminated steroids jumped to 19 on Wednesday, while U.S. lawmakers pressed federal health regulators to explain what they knew about the pharmacy that produced the drugs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said four more deaths had been confirmed in the last 24 hours, including two in Tennessee, the state hardest hit with eight deaths since the infections were discovered in late September. Virginia and Florida each reported one new death. The number of new cases of fungal meningitis linked to steroid injections from the New England Compounding Center rose by 14 to 245, the CDC said in its latest daily update. Two additional infections have not been confirmed as meningitis. The daily tally was a reminder that one of the worst U.S. health scares in recent years has not been contained, despite emergency steps to recall the medications and stop the use of products from New England Compounding Center of Massachusetts.
NECC has recalled all of its medications and health authorities are warning patients who may have been treated with the drugs to watch for symptoms. Special agents from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration raided NECC’s Framingham facility near Boston late on Tuesday as calls in Congress grew for a criminal investigation. The FDA is also under scrutiny. While it has limited authority to regulate pharmacies like NECC, it had flagged violations at the company as recently as 2006. On Wednesday a U.S. House of Representatives panel investigating the outbreak gave the FDA until October 31 to turn over its documents related to NECC, including communications with state regulators and the agency’s commissioner, dating back to 2004. The panel said it heard from FDA staff last week that the agency had been assured by NECC of the pharmacy’s compliance in early 2007. But the FDA representatives could not confirm whether the agency then took any steps to ensure corrective measures had been taken. An FDA spokesman said the agency had received the letter and would respond directly to the panel.

While more than half of the 13 people polled said that Alpha Centauri was a star system, only one knew it was about 4 light-years away from Earth. None knew it would take about 40,000 years to get there on a spacecraft like NASA’s Voyager 1, though guesses ranged from two days to 150,000 years. “I would have known when I went to space camp when I was 9,” said bartender Anya Aplin. America’s favorite dietary supplements, multivitamins, modestly lowered the risk for cancer in healthy male doctors who took them for more than a decade, the first large study to test these pills has found. The result is a surprise because many studies of individual vitamins have found they don’t help prevent chronic diseases and some even seemed to raise the risk of cancer. In the new study, multivitamins cut the chance of developing cancer by 8 percent. That is less effective than a good diet, exercise and not smoking, each of which can lower cancer risk by 20 percent to 30 percent, cancer experts say. Multivitamins also may have different results in women, younger men or people less healthy than those in this study. “It’s a very mild effect and personally I’m not sure it’s significant enough to recommend to anyone” although it is promising, said Dr. Ernest Hawk, vice president of cancer prevention at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
and formerly of the National Cancer Institute. “At least this doesn’t suggest a harm” as some previous studies on single vitamins have, he said. Hawk reviewed the study for the American Association for Cancer Research, which is meeting in Anaheim, Calif., where the study was to be presented on Wednesday. It also was published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association. About one-third of U.S. adults and as many as half of those over 50 take multivitamins. They are marketed as a kind of insurance policy against bad eating. Yet no government agency recommends their routine use “regardless of the quality of a person’s diet,” says a fact sheet from the federal Office of Dietary Supplements. Some fads, such as the antioxidant craze over vitamins A and E and beta-carotene, backfired when studies found more health risk with those supplements, not less. Many of those were single vitamins in larger doses than the “100 percent of daily value” amounts that multivitamins typically contain.

DENPASAR — A 17-year-old Japanese boy was sentenced to six months in prison Thursday for possessing a small amount of marijuana while vacationing with family on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali. The teen could have received 12 years under Indonesia’s tough narcotics laws. Judge Gunawan Tri Budiono said in Denpasar district court that although the boy “spoiled the image of Bali as tourist destination,” he showed leniency because the boy is young and bought the drugs for personal use. The teen, who cannot be named under Indonesian law because of his age, admitted buying 2.6 grams (0.09 ounces) of marijuana for personal use. He has been detained in a police cell since Aug. 8, after buying the marijuana near popular Kuta beach while vacationing with his mother. He will be credited for time served. The judge said the boy would be freed in February and immediately deported. Last year, a 14-year-old Australian boy avoided prison after serving two months in an Indonesian detention center for buying drugs. The court also showed leniency after he expressed remorse and able to prove it he bought the drugs for personal use.

MANGUPURA - Elements of Kuta community finally took decisive action against taxi hanging out in Kuta tourist area, especially around Jalan Legian. Dozens of taxi sign lamps were removed and the drivers were given severe reprimand not to repeat their mistake. Reaction of the Kuta communities on Tuesday morning (Oct 16) was taken in response to the attitude of the Bali Transportation Agency that could not regulate the taxis operating in the Kuta tourist area. Chairman of the People Empowerment Agency (LPM) of Kuta, Nyoman Graha Wicaksana, said on Wednesday (Oct 17) the taxis hanging out in Kuta, especially around Jalan Legian, had become one of the main causes of congestion. This condition had long been complained. Restriction on the number of taxis operating in Kuta had also been implemented, especially prohibition to taxis hanging out in Kuta area. Unfortunately, the effort had not been maximal. Moreover, the discipline by the Bali Transportation Agency, having the authority in this matter, was assessed to be sluggish. As a result, there were still taxi drivers remaining stubborn. Even, taxi drivers were
sleeping while waiting for passengers. On Monday night (Oct 15), around 10:00 p.m., with the elements of LPM Kuta, the Kuta community as well as the Transportation, Communication and Informatics Agency of Badung had already made a raid against the taxis. The taxi drivers ensnared in the operation were given reprimand and guidance. Unfortunately, this effort had not been successful. After the raid, many taxi drivers were still found hanging out. “Finally, the LPM Kuta together with the Kuta customary village took action spontaneously at 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Sign lamp of the taxis hanging out was dislodged and secured. Such decisive action was taken since they (infringing taxi drivers—Ed) have been reprimanded for several times but remained stubborn,” said Graha while adding there were taxi drivers taking the lamp sign last Wednesday afternoon. Furthermore, Graha expected the taxi drivers to take care of Kuta. His party welcomed them to earn livelihood in Kuta, but the existing rules related to loading and dropping off passengers should be obeyed. Truck hit car and house at Sumbersari Negara (Bali Post) –
The accident happened again at Denpasar-Gilimanuk with this time a truck hit a car at a rise in Sumbersari, Melaya last Wednesday (17/10) around 5 pm local time. Luckily there are no casualties yet it did cause a traffic jam. The truck that carried small packaged tea drinks (the gelas) H 1875 GP drien by Iwan Hidayat (23) fom Jombang, East Java hit a Xenia B 1332 OB driven by Sukiman (45) from Lampung. According to Iwan he was coming to Gilimanuk and during a rise at Sumbersari he was trying to avoid a truck bringing concrete poles L 8187 UR driven by Agus Suprianto from Jakarta as it broke down in the middle of the rise and blocking everyone passing by. While trying to pass it from the right, the truck Iwan drove couldn’t make it and hit the Xenia at the back. Trying to avoid any further damage, he tried to move to the right yet hit a house on the roadside. Meanwhile Sukiman was trying to move back as well but due to there are many motorcycles queuing then he chose to stay. The incident could not be avoided causing the car flipped. Suningrat, the owner of the house admitted to have experience loss at least IDR 10 Million as his walls are torn down. Officers are still on the roads arranging the total traffic by evening. (kmb26)

Three other areas have been included in the world cultural heritage (WBD) such as the Taman Ayun Temple area, Pakerisan Watershed and Ulun Danu Batur Temple. Section Head of the Cultural Heritage Objects, Directorate General of Culture in the Ministry of Education and Culture, Yunus Arbi, said the proposal of national strategic area determination was also undertaken to the area of Borobudur Temple and Sangiran that had been included in the world cultural heritage earlier than the subak system by UNESCO. “The proposal to include the Bali’s world cultural heritage in the national strategic area should be carefully assessed and strengthened. The central government itself always gives a positive appreciation to the proposals of the region,” he said. He said the criteria regarding the national strategic area had been set up in the government regulation. It was just required a proposal from
the region and it would certainly give additional benefit to the income of local farmers. In relation to the maintenance of the world cultural heritage, the opportunity for Indonesia to build an international network was very possible. “Many countries have the world cultural heritage with the conditions of terraced rice fields as found in Bali. However, the system applied is different,” he said. He also mentioned that China, the Philippines and Japan also had the world cultural heritage with a similar cultural background to Bali. In the future, Indonesia could establish a network that could serve as a means of sharing the experiences. “Such an idea can be followed up in the future because it can provide benefit to many coun-
tries,” he affirmed. As known, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy would develop 50 national tourist destinations up to 2025. The government arranged the National Tourism Plan which contained a systemic framework and approach in conjunction with the national tourism development, including the development of such 50 destinations. Such fifty destinations were divided into 88 national tourism strategic areas and 222 national tourism development regions assessed to have a potential. To that end, it was required a selfpreparation and commitment to develop the regional tourism. Tuwed Village Market turns dormant Negara (Bali Post)—
Due to lacking of visitors and less strategic location, the Tuwed Village Market in Melaya has been dormant since three years ago. The market located in front of the official residence of the SDN 3 Tuwed elementary school has long been left by traders. They claimed to leave the market because there were no visiting consumers. As consequence, they suffered a loss to peddle there. According to information, the market was built in 2009 and the budget was obtained from the National Program for Community Empowerment (PNPM). The rural market project spent a budget worth IDR 62.689 million. Initially, the project works ran smoothly. However, after the market was accomplished no people were interested in shopping there. When operated, the traders sold vegetables, roasted suckling pig and various fries. After a few months, those traders decided to discontinue their peddling as lacking of visitors. The market allocated for Tuwed and surrounding rural communities looked silent. Since the beginning, the development plan had reaped the pros and cons regarding the location where it was built. Community and traders preferred to sell at the more strategic junction of Tuwed. Chief of the Tuwed Village Assembly (BPD), Ketut Toya, accompanied by Chairman of the People’s Empowerment Agency (LPM), Made Sukarta, confirmed on Wednesday (Oct 17) that since several years ago the village market had been rarely used and lacked of visitors. However, the village authority was still attempting to draw traders having the interest to contract the kiosks so that it could generate revenue for the village. The village market had one unit of building divided into three sections over 300 square meters of land. Headman of Tuwed, I Ketut Suarna, when asked for his confirmation said the journey of the village market lived through ups and downs. The traders tended to sell at the junction area of Tuwed because the location was more crowded. According to him, the market building had only been used for three months. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — DC Comics will retain its rights to Superman after a judge ruled Wednesday that the heirs of one of the superhero’s co-creators signed away their ability to reclaim copyrights to the Man of Steel roughly 20 years ago. The ruling means that DC Comics and its owner Warner Bros. will retain all rights to continue using the character in books, films, television and other mediums, including a the film reboot planned for next year. DC Comics sued the heirs of artist Joe Shuster in 2010, seeking a ruling that they lost their ability to try to reclaim the superhero’s copyrights in 1992. U.S. District Court Judge Otis Wright II agreed, stating that Shuster’s sister and brother relinquished any chance to reclaim Superman copyrights in exchange for annual pension payments from DC Comics. Shuster and writer Jerry Siegel created Superman, who made his comic book debut in 1938 in Action Comics (hash)1. Both men battled for increased compensation for the superhero throughout their lives and Siegel’s heirs have also fought DC for a stake in copyrights to Superman. Shuster’s heirs had argued that the copyright agreements could be terminated under
provisions that allowed creators of works made before 1978 a mechanism to reclaim their rights. Wright ruled that the decision by Shuster’s sister to accept higher annual payments created a new agreement and the pre-1978 rights no longer applied. “We respectfully disagree with its factual and legal conclusions, and it is surprising given that the judge appeared to emphatically agree with our position at the summary judgment hearing,” the Shusters’ attorney Marc Toberoff wrote in a statement. NEW YORK — When two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks found out he was being honored by the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity at the New York Public Library, he remembered he owed a couple of books. “I’ve got to turn them in from 1977,” Hanks said on the red carpet before going into the gala event. Hanks, accompanied by his wife Rita Wilson, joked that when he got the call from the foundation, he responded, “No, this is the Hanks house,” followed by “really” and “why?” Hanks posed on the red carpet with Wilson, his son Colin, of “Dexter” fame, and Wiesel too. Hanks’ consistent thoughtfulness and concern with his charitable endeavors earned him the honor. He holds it higher than his acting accolades, but also realizes that the two are connected. He’s proud of the work he does, and by virtue of being in a few successful movies, feels that put him in a position to be altruistic. “We work very hard in a business that deserves and earns every bit of ridicule that we heap upon it. But at the end of the day you got to wake up in the morning and try to make the world a better place,” Hanks said. I want the mangrove forest keep functioning as before. Let’s preserve the forest and not use it as tourism accommodation development,” he explained on Wednesday, October 17, 2012.
