Dutch airline KLM said overnight inspection of an airliner after a test flight showed no damage to engines or other parts from ash in the atmosphere. Lufthansa also reported problem-free test flights, while Italian and French carriers announced they would be flying empty airliners on Sunday to assess conditions. For the moment, a clampdown on flights across much of Europe was strictly maintained, posing a growing problem for businesses including airlines, estimated to be losing $200 million a day, and thousands of travellers stranded worldwide. Many countries closed their airspace until well into Sunday or Monday, and weather experts said wind patterns meant the cloud was
not likely to move far until later in the week. They said the dark grey plume rising from an Icelandic volcano and drifting southwards through the upper atmosphere could become more concentrated on Tuesday and Wednesday. For some businesses dependent on the speed of air freight, the impact has been immediate. Kenya’s flower exporters said they were already losing up to $2 million a day because they had not been able to airlift their blooms. Kenya accounts for about a third of flower imports into the European Union. Volcanic ash has an abrasive effect and can strip off vital aerodynamic surfaces and paralyse an aircraft engine. Aircraft avionics and
electronics, as well as windshields, can also be damaged. KLM, acting on a European Union request, flew a Boeing 737800 without passengers at the regular altitude of 10 km (6 miles) and up to the 13 km maximum on Saturday. Germany’s Lufthansa said it flew 10 empty planes to Frankfurt from Munich at altitudes of up to 8 km. “We have not found anything unusual and no irregularities, which indicates the atmosphere is clean and safe to fly,” said a spokeswoman for KLM, which is part of Air France-KLM. German airline Air Berlin said it had also carried out test flights and expressed irritation at the shutdown of European air space. “We are amazed that the results of the test flights done by Lufthansa and Air Berlin have not had any bearing on the decision-making of the air safety authorities,” Chief Executive Joachim Hunold said. “The closure of the air space happened purely because of the data of
a computer simulation at the Vulcanic Ash Advisory Centre in London,” he told the mass circulation Bild am Sonntag paper. The air travel disruption is the worst since the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington in 2001, when U.S. airspace was closed for three days and European airlines were forced to halt all transatlantic services. Bali News Passion of Buleleng fine arts
From different points lead to the same point During this year, the movement of fine arts life in North Bali begins to show encouraging passion. At least, the excitement is proven by the commencement of Buleleng artists exhibiting their works before the public. Although the exhibition productivity is not always directly proportional to the quality of the work, a performance of art works in public spaces can be used as barometer to what extent the Buleleng fine arts have begun to find ways to revive. Since a year ago, the Buleleng artists have recorded three times of exhibition. Driven by the Buleleng Artists Community (KPB), it organized an exhibition in the framework of Bali Arts Festival (BAF) in May 2009. Then, a few months later, in the event of the North Bali International Cultural Festival, this group put back their paintings in the exhibition space at the Auditorium Building of Buleleng Cultural and Tourism Services. Finally, since last April 6, the artists belonging to various genres showed again their outstanding works in the space of the Buleleng Cultural and Tourism Services conjured up into an exhibition space. Other than exhibition carried out by KPB, there were also a number of exhibitions conducted independently by young painters of Buleleng in Singaraja and Lovina. For example, at the end of last March, the number of artists from Ganesha Education University (Undiksha) Singaraja held a glass paintings exhibition at the Museum of Buleleng. These students exhibited their works after conducting a sort of college field work (PKL) at Nagasepaha Village Buleleng known as one of the glass painting development centers in Indonesia. Indeed, when talking about the exhibition management, the exhibition events in Singaraja are not comparable to similar events in Ubud or in Nusa Dua luxury art gallery. However, in terms of quality of the works, the painting works of Buleleng could be equaled to the works of famous painters or artists who were used to make exhibition in Ubud or Nusa Dua, or in other cities in Indonesia. In the first exhibition held in the May of last year, the paintings displayed by the artists of North Bali
indeed gave impression of being showed haphazardly as often happened in the development exhibition by local governments. This occurred because the exhibition did not pass through a rigorous curatorial step and seemingly all artists should get a place. However, in the last exhibition, each artist started to show off their identity in the midst of the diversity of their choices and style they deeply involved. In other words, although the curatorial measure was not held strictly, as many as 37 exhibiting artists seemed to have been doing rigorous selection of their own work. Therefore, the works performed could become an actual self-realization as well as factual expression of the long journey of the artistry itself. Moreover, with the theme Sudhamala (as the theme of PKB this year), the artists seemed to indicate a process of purification as well as self-realization through the choice of color, style and form of objects at their surrounding. Just have a look at, for instance, the paintings by Tini Wahyuni entitled Purification. With soft-color brush strokes, she seemed to show off the lonely figure of a woman who actually had a hidden potential strength. The strength shown can be in the form of physical power or emotion and imagination in mind. Then, there was a realistic work by I Gusti Nengah Sura Ardana featuring parental figures with meaningful facial scars. The parental figures could reflect a Sura passing through a self-purification process so he was unable to stop it. Hardiman, an art curator and also a lecturer at Undiksha Singaraja, said the artists featured in the exhibition indeed have attempted their best in appreciating the theme Sudhamala. As a result, many ways were taken by the artists to read the repertoire of the great value of community life in Bali.
Firstly, they of course provided more flexibility in interpreting the Sudhamala theme. Secondly, they also began from starting point with a choice of a visual language they deeply involved lately. “Both backgrounds commingle with the horizon of each expectation of individual artist and execution of struggle for visual artists that was not easy. These artists chose the path of self-purification or quotation of the sacred tales, modern myth, and reality in daily lives,” Hardiman said. On that account, the real subject matter of all works on display was a very broad and diverse. Sudhamala, Hardiman said, eventually became the starting point and not a destination point. The selected mode by the artists was not indeed wrong. However, continued Hardiman, how beautiful it would be if all could depart from different points and then arrived at the same spot. However, in years to come Hardiman had confidence the same point would be encountered when the artists of Buleleng constantly committed the process of creation by utilizing no matter how narrow the space used to show their talent. Interestingly, within the exhibition, there were at least five foreign artists who had been lived in the North Bali. The five artists, among others, Guy Vandevijvere, Carola Lips and Krešimir Bobovec, also gave its own color theme for the reading of Sudhamala theme that so far only seemed to become a common repertoire in Bali. Even though they conveyed a variety of interpretations, at least the artists of Buleleng (native artist to Buleleng, those from outside or abroad who settled in Buleleng) have created a path together to restore the excitement of Buleleng arts that had faded since the past few years.
Arrested, embezzles two rented cars Denpasar (Bali Post)—
The officers of Criminal Detective Unit (Reskrim) of North Kuta Police managed to arrest the perpetrator of car rental fraud. The suspect was I Gede Narmawan, 41, living at Dalung Permai Housing Block I No. 18, North Kuta. He was captured after the officers led by Unit Chief Arief Prasetya made an investigation. Aside from the suspect, police also seized two cars as evidence. Chief of North Kuta Police I Nyoman Sukanada, last Friday (Apr 16) confirmed the arrest of the suspect of car rental fraud. The suspect was arrested at his home, last Tuesday (Apr 13). Now, he has been arrested in North Kuta Police while waiting for further legal process. “His case is being developed,” said Chief Sukanada last Friday. Chief Sukanada explained the suspect pretended to hire two cars with the reasons for accompanying Australian tourists. The two cars consisted of Suzuki APV with police plate DK 995 FD belonging to I Nyoman Yasa and Daihatsu Xenia with police plate DK 1646 FC belonging to I Dewa Made Ardita, were hired at IDR 3.9 million per month. “The suspect confessed that he would accompany tourists,” he said.
Well, these victims did not feel suspicious at all if the suspect would commit evil deed. After passing for a month and rental time expired, both cars were not returned. When asked, the suspect confessed the car was still being used to transport tourists. “The victim began to have suspicion to the attitude of the suspect because the cars were not handed over,” he explained. Since the victim did not believe in the reasons of the suspect, the victim reported the case to North Kuta Police. Promptly, police rushed to investigate and hunted down the suspect. In fact, the two cars were mortgaged by the suspect. It was known after one of the evidences (Daihatsu Xenia) was found in Situbondo, East Java. The car was pledged to the Mr. Haji worth IDR 20 million. Meanwhile, another car was obtained from a fence at Sembung area, Mengwi, Badung. Chief Sukanada added the case would be further developed. Similarly, his party would investigate whether the suspect had a syndicate related to the fraud case allegation. “The suspect will be intensively examined in the room of investigators. These measures remain quite harmful to the mental condition of the victim, especially when they are still under age. “In Denpasar, there are many behavioral cases reported to happen widely at private courses, religious private courses and even schools having many children. Perpetrators are usually in disguised as sellers of food or beverages. Having got the attention from children, then they immediately perform the action,” said Yuni. Perpetrators with exhibitionism abnormalities tend to show off themselves. They would be very satisfied if the victim was shocked to scream. Meanwhile, for the perpetrators of rape targeting elementary school children, Yuni added the perpetrators might indeed have a sexual disorder or sexual trauma experienced in their childhood. “Perpetrators get satisfaction if they see the victim may also feel the pain or satisfied to read or saw the action featured in the media while they
were not caught,” said Yuni. During the year 2010, according to Yuni, there were 5 cases of rape affecting young children. One of the perpetrators raping the children of junior high school had been caught. Meanwhile, the remaining four perpetrators of rape to elementary school children had not been caught, but allegedly the perpetrator was only one person. This could be seen in terms of the same mode where all the victims were raped and strangled. “In addition to rape cases, there are also cases of children kidnapped but they were not accompanied by rape cases. For this year, there are about 4 cases reported. One of them strangled plus abducted but was not raped,” added Yuni. She simply appealed to the parents to always teach their children not to respond to any conversations with strangers or people they did not know very well. “Some say that children under hypnosis. Tests of elementary school’s national exam submitted to printing house Denpasar (Bali Post)—
The tender of test sheets printing of the National Standard School Final Examination (UASBN) for elementary school level valued at IDR 505 million was won by a local printing house namely Percetakan Bali. Last Friday (Apr 17), the master of the UASBN tests was submitted by the Head of Bali Educational, Youth and Sports Services (Disdikpora) I Wayan Suasta to the printing house to be duplicated further. Submission of the master of the tests was witnessed by a number of officials at the Bali Regional Office of Religious Affairs and Bali Police. “Two days before the execution of elementary school’s national exam scheduled to run from May 4, 2010, the entire test materials should have been distributed to Disdikpora of regencies / city throughout Bali,” said Suasta to Bali Post, last Saturday (Apr 17). According to Suasta, the process of tendering for the printing of elementary school test materials in Bali Province was applied by five printing houses. In addition to local printing house of Bali, the tendering process was also involved four printing companies from outside Bali, namely from West Java and Central Java. After
passing through an extra strict administration selection and other requirements, the tender organizing team declared the Percetakan Bali as the winner of the tender. “The triumph of Bali local printing house is certainly relieving enough. Frankly, we had a trauma to the chaos occurring during the implementation of national exam for junior and senior high school / vocational high school not long ago due to the matter of printing house. Hopefully, the confusion occurring in the implementation of the UN for senior high school / vocational high school will not happen again in the next national exam for the elementary school,” he expected. Furthermore, Suasta added, arguably the UASBN for elementary school posed a synthesis between the UN and the local tests. Because, the test materials covering the subjects like Bahasa Indonesia, Mathematics and Natural Sciences were compiled by a team of central level and the provincial level. In details, 25 percent of the exam questions were prepared and determined by the National Agency for Education Standards (BSNP) and applied nationally. Meanwhile, about 75 percent were set by provincial team. “Other fundamental distinctions from that of the UN for secondary school and senior high school / vocational high school are on the rights to set the graduation of students that is entirely in the hands of the board of teachers at each school,” he said. Rummy gamblers and ball games croupier arrested Singaraja (Bali Post)—
The ranks of Busungbiu Mobile Detective Unit (Buser) managed to capture four perpetrators of rummy gambling at Kelod Hamlet, Kedis Village, Busungbiu Subdistrict. The four were then secured at Headquarters of Busungbiu Police and up to last Friday (Apr 16) they were still undergoing an intensive examination. Chief of Busungbiu Police Putu Ariana with permission of Buleleng Police Chief Istiyono last Friday said the the four perpetrators justified the arrest. The names of perpetrators were Komang Agus, 22, Ketut Sukawan, 42, and Ketut Marjaya, 38, where the three are residents from Kelod Hamlet, while Wayan Ginarsa, 50, a resident from Kaja Hamlet, Kedis Village. They were arrested last Thursday (Apr 15) following a report from the public. In addition to securing the four perpetrators, police also succeeded in securing evidence in the form of a set of playing cards and
cash worth IDR 112,000. At the territory of Kampung Baru, Singaraja, the Mobile Detective Unit of Buleleng Police under the control of the Unit Chief I Ketut Adnyana, successfully captured the croupier of rolling ball games that often held gambling at Kampung Baru. The two croupiers captured were Wayan Suryawan, 32, and Ketut Astawan, 33, and both residents from Kampung Baru, Singaraja. Mobile Detective Unit (Buser) of Negara City Police secured the suspect Kus, 36, from Pengambengan, Negara, and NV, 21, a girl from Surabaya, last Friday (Apr 16) evening due to found burying a fetus / infant at the Kelapa Balian graveyard, Pengambengan. From the information collected at the scene last Friday evening, the disclosure of the case originated from the two suspects borrowing a hoe in the house of the couple Sapari, 40, and Mujayana, 36, whose home was in the west of the graveyard at 1:00 pm Local Time. Having borrowed a hoe, the two suspects walked to the graveyard and buried something. “I think they were going to clean the graveyard, so I left them for a while. However, in the long run we felt suspicious of what they buried at the graveyard. In the afternoon, we were forced to dig the grave,” he said. How surprised Sapari was because after digging the grave, she found a torn piece of underwear and it contained a very small fetus. Then, she reported the discovery to the officers of Negara City Police. Within half an hour, police officers have arrived at the scene. From the results of examination held by one of the medical personnel, the finding was truly
a fetus. However, the officer could not ensure its age. “It has the length of 10 cm,” the officer said while wrapping again by such underwear. Suicide bomb at police station kills 7 in Pakistan Associated Press Writer
ISLAMABAD – A suicide bomber rammed a truck loaded with explosives into a police station in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday, killing a child and six other civilians, police said. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility. The attack was the second this weekend in the Kohat area, illustrating the resilient nature of militant networks in Pakistan despite army offensives targeting their sanctuaries along the Afghan border. At least 26 people were wounded, including six police, officials said. Qari Hussain, a top Pakistani Taliban militant commander who allegedly trains suicide bombers, called an Associated Press reporter from an undisclosed location hours after the blast to claim responsibility. He said the suicide blast was revenge for a recent army strike on a militant-run hospital in the South Waziristan tribal area. Hussain and other Taliban commanders are believed to be hiding in North Waziristan to avoid the army onslaught in South Waziristan. “Such attacks will continue in revenge for the deaths of our fellows,” Hussain said. The truck was loaded with up to
550 pounds (250 kilograms) of explosives, area police official Dilawar Khan Bangash said. It struck a concrete barrier in front of the building, which was heavily damaged, as was an adjoining school. Twin suicide attacks in the Kohat area on Saturday targeted refugees who were fleeing a separate army offensive in the Orakzai tribal region. That attack killed 41 people in line to register for food and relief supplies. The victims of Saturday’s attacks were among around 200,000 people who have left the Orakzai region since the end of last year, when the Pakistan army began airstrikes against militants believed to have fled there from South Waziristan. The registration point in Kohat was managed by the local government, but was sometimes used by foreign humanitarian groups to deliver aid. There was no claim of responsibility for Saturday’s bombings, which is not unusual when large numbers of Pakistani civilians die. The registration point — essentially a small building in a dusty field — may have been hit to persuade people not to have any contact with the local administration or foreign relief groups.

As Thailand’s traditional New Year holiday ended, protest leaders called for another mass rally Tuesday in their bid to oust Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva — raising concerns of more clashes after savage fighting a week ago killed 25 people. The warning by army spokesman Col. Sansern Kaewkamnerd was another blow for Thailand’s vital tourism sector, which accounts for 6 percent of the economy and has suffered a steep decline since the protests began March 12. points to the capital and within the city to try to prevent more “Red Shirt” protesters from reaching the main rally site, an area of upscale shopping malls and five-star hotels that has been under virtual siege. At least six malls remain closed. “The protest area is unsafe. Authorities need to control it by sending security personnel into the surrounding high-rise buildings,” Sansern told a news conference. He said soldiers would help “prevent people with ill intentions from infiltrating the area.” The government accuses “terrorists” armed with guns and other weapons of
orchestrating the earlier violence and says weapons were stolen from the military that have not been returned. The protesters consist mainly of poor rural supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and prodemocracy activists who opposed the military coup that ousted him in 2006. They believe Abhisit heads an illegitimate government because it came to power through a parliamentary vote after disputed court rulings ousted two pro-Thaksin administrations. The conflict has been characterized by some as class warfare, pitting the country’s vast rural poor against an elite that has traditionally held power. Meanwhile, the rival, establishment-backed “Yellow Shirt” protest movement vowed Sunday to take action unless the government “strictly and efficiently enforces the law” to deal with the crisis.

Chinese president Hu flies to Tibetan quake zone Associated Press Writer
JIEGU, China – Chinese President Hu Jintao cradled an injured Tibetan girl as she wept Sunday and promised speedy aid for the scores left homeless when a massive earthquake struck this remote, mountainous region, killing more than 1,700 people. Hu cut short an official trip to South America to deal with the disaster in far west China’s Qinghai province, where Tibetan resentment over Han Chinese rule has occasionally boiled over into violence. The president’s carefully scripted trip included visits with displaced families living in tents and rescue teams as they dug through debris. He also sat with injured survivors in a field hospital and promised the Communist Party and the government was doing everything they could to help the quake victims. Most of the affected were Tibetan. “I guarantee the party and the government will help you build a new home and make sure your children can return to school as soon as possible,” Hu told a family living in a tent. Footage on China Central Television also showed Hu grasping the hand of a monk as he pledged that every effort would be made to save anyone still trapped under the rubble. “As long as there is a ray of hope we will try 100 times harder to save lives,” he said. Earlier Sunday, the official Xinhua News Agency reported that a 68-yearold man was pulled from the rubble four days after the quake hit Wednesday morning. It said the man, Dawa, only suffered broken ribs and had been trapped in a space that allowed him to move around. At a field hospital set up on the grounds of a sports stadium, Hu sat on the bed of a Tibetan middle school student identified by China Central Television as Zhuoma, and held her as she wept. Her right arm was bandaged and supported by a sling.
“Rest assured, you will have a full recovery,” he told her. “Don’t worry. I know you are a good girl. Be strong. You will have a bright future. Grandpa will be thinking of you.” Hu and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao have both cultivated grandfatherly images in a bid to portray the leadership as putting people first. The death toll rose Sunday by a few hundred to 1,706 with 256 still missing, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing the rescue headquarters in Jiegu. It said 12,128 were injured, including 1,424 in serious condition. Most of the survivors who were not evacuated to hospitals elsewhere are now living in tents and have basic food and clean water, Zou Ming, head of disaster relief at the Ministry of Civil Affairs, told a news conference in Beijing. Still, Zou said, getting aid to the region, which is a 12-hour drive from the provincial capital, remains a problem. Hundreds of the dead have been cremated. In a hillside ceremony Saturday, Buddhist monks in face masks set ablaze piles of blanket-wrapped bodies in a mass cremation, as necessity forced them to break with the local tradition of “sky burials” — leaving corpses on a platform to be devoured by vultures. Rescue workers were still searching for survivors and bodies in schools. The quake destroyed more than a third of the school buildings in Jiegu and rendered the rest dangerous, according to the Qinghai provincial government. It said 103 students were killed and 684 students and teachers were injured, and at least 38 others
were still missing. Shattered schools remain a sensitive issue in China, where a devastating 2008 quake killed thousands of students, and school buildings and code enforcement were found to be inferior. But the quake this past week flattened schools and other buildings alike. The first makeshift school started classes Saturday, with 60 elementary and middle school students singing the national anthem, Xinhua said. More classes were expected to resume Sunday. In town, residents who had camped outdoors amid the debris and lived for days on water and instant noodles eagerly stuffed vegetables into plastic bags as a woman sold eggs and cans of soft drinks on the sidewalk, one of the first vendors to receive goods from out of town. Taiwan’s Red Cross, meanwhile, sent a medical team with relief supplies and medicine, according to the government-owned Central News Agency. Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949, and while Beijing still claims the island as part of its territory, ties have warmed during the past two years. The exiled Dalai Lama said Saturday he’d like to visit the quake site, though he has not returned to China since he fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule. “To fulfill the wishes of many of the people there, I am eager to go there myself to offer them comfort,” the Tibetan spiritual leader said. China hasn’t commented but is unlikely to allow a visit after long accusing the Dalai Lama of fomenting separatism in Tibetan areas.
Spanish helicopter crashes in Haiti, 4 killed Associated Press Writer
FOND VERRETTES, Haiti – Four soldiers died in the fiery crash of a Spanish military helicopter Friday in the rugged mountains of eastern Haiti, the United Nations said. The soldiers were part of Spain’s effort to help in Haiti’s recovery and reconstruction following the cataclysmic Jan. 12 earthquake, which the government says killed as many as 300,000 people. The helicopter, identified by Spanish media as a Bell AB-212, crashed in the Fond Verrettes area about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from Port-au-Prince near the border with the Dominican Republic. Haiti shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. U.N. peacekeeping mission spokesman George Ola-Davies said the craft was carrying four soldiers when it went down. Recovery teams had to lower themselves with ropes in the remote terrain to move toward the wreckage. The bodies remained on the mountain overnight because night fell before they could be reached. Because of the severity of the crash it was difficult for the teams to count the number of bodies. An Associated Press journalist
saw helicopter parts scattered on the mountain, with at least two scorch marks indicating the aircraft might have ricocheted off one hill before plunging into another. “I was washing my clothes and saw a helicopter coming at me and my little sister, so we ran up the hill and hid behind a tree,” said 12-yearold David Pierre. “I don’t think anyone in it lived.” Other witnesses said the helicopter was already in flames before it struck trees and slammed into the ground. Jean-Claude Berize, in his early 20s, said he heard ammunition exploding in the inferno. “We saw a lot of fire,” he said. The rural area, known as Mount Toro, is sparsely populated by farmers living in wood and concrete shacks. Spain’s Defense Ministry said the helicopter was one of four based on a Spanish navy amphibious ship, the Castilla. Spain has about 450 soldiers in Haiti helping the recovery effort. They are not attached to the 9,000member U.N. peacekeeping mission in Haiti. The crash site is near the mountain where a U.N. surveillance airplane crashed in October, killing all 11 Jordanian and Uruguayan peacekeepers aboard.

Rights Body to investigate Koja riot Antara
JAKARTA - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) will conduct an investigation into the bloody riot that occurred in Koja, North Jakarta, on Wednesday. “Komnas HAM will call all the parties involved, including the Jakarta administration and community members,” Nurkholis, deputy chairman of Komnas HAM, said here on Saturday after attending a discussion on “Who Needs Satpol PP (Public Order Agency)” organized by a private radio station. The commission would begin its investigation by studying the order issued by the local authorities for the clearing of a populated area in Koja last Wednesday (April 14).
“If the reality was not in accordance with the decree, it means there was a deviation and we will study where the deviation began,” he said. From the deviation, the human rights body would trace any human rights violation that had happened, he said. If the head of the public order agency said the land clearing effort was carried out in line with a court order, the clearing should have been carried out by court personnel, he said. Meanwhile, Yasonna H Laoly, a
member of the House of Representatives (DPR)’s Commission II, said his commission would summon Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo to ask for explanation about the land clearing order which had triggered the riot in Koja. He said the authorities who had ordered the land clearing action should be held accountable. The Tanjung Priok violence erupted on Wednesday morning when around 1,750 public order officers (Satpol PP) marched to the graveyard complex where there is the tomb of respected Muslim scholar, Habib Hasan bin Muhammnad Al Hadad, better known as Mbah Priok, who spread Islam in Jakarta in the 18th century.

BATAM - The immigration office in Batam, Riau Province, arrested 18 people believed to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh at Hang Nadim airport on Saturday. “We suspected they forged their visas and therefore we held them at the Batam Center Immigration Office,” head of Batam Immigration Office, Yudi, said. He said these people were held upon arrival at the airport from Surabaya, East Java, aboard a Batavia Air plane. “Our officers saw they acted suspiciously on arrival,” he said. Upon questioning the Bangladeshis said that they flew directly from Bangladesh to Surabaya, which is sus-
picious because there is no direct flight between Bangladesh and Surabaya, he said. “So the officers suspected that there was something wrong and therefore all of them were immediately questioned,” he said. He said the officers were still investigating their intention to come to Batam. The 18 Bangladashis declined to answer any question from journalists who met them at the immigration office. Batam has so far been known as the choice for a temporary stay by illegal immigrants before leaving for Australia. In 2009, the regional office of the ministry of justice and human rights held around 100 illegal immigrants from various countries such as from Afghanistan and other Asian countries.
The Priok violence caused 134 people to be hospitalized due to serious and light injuries. The victims consisted of 10 police officers, 69 public order officers, and 55 civilians. Three public order officers identified as M. Tajudin, W. Soepono and Israel Jaya, were killed in the conflict between public order officers and local residents. Besides the human casualties, 46 vehicles belonging to public order officers and the police had been burned in the clashes involving thousands of people resisting the eviction attempt at the revered tomb complex in Koja, North Jakarta.
BANJARMASIN The government’s task force charged with eradicating law mafia is focussing its efforts on “big fish,” its secretary, Denny Indrayana, said. “We are focussing on nine big fish,” he said here on Saturday. Denny said the nine big fish includes corruption, tax and excise mafias, mafias in mining and energy fields, forestry, banking and financial sector and land and fishery mafias. “So long as these mafias remain it will be difficult to develop the country. So long as they are not cleaned it will be difficult (to develop the country). So the formula is like what President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said ‘cleanse them’,” he said. Denny said the eradication of law mafia is the main program of the President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono-Vice President Boediono government and therefore now was the best momentum for it. “President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered ‘cleanse them’, he said. In view of that Denny called on the people in the region to be careful in selecting their leaders in the elections later in June. He said people in the regional elections later must scrutinize the candidates’ track record well. “Choose a leader that has no connection with coal mafia. Select the one that does not issue a mining license,” he said. Denny said that in the near future the task force also planned to uncover the conspiracy in mining and energy fields. “So for those asking ‘what about the mining mafia’ just now the answer is ‘just wait and see’,” he said. JAKARTA - Jakarta authorities have denied that hundreds of public order officers went missing in the Tanjung Priok violence which occurred last Wednesday (April 14). “There has been no report of hundreds of public order officers having gone missing, there is no such a report,” Cucu Ahmad Kurnia, a spokesman of Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said here on Saturday. It was not possible for 870 officers to go missing without anybody reporting it, he said. All personnel sent to Koja had returned to their respective homes, except those injured or who had died, Cucu said.
Cucu Ahmad Kurnia dimissed the statement made earlier by the head of the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), Hotman Sinambela, that 870 officers had disappeared. Hotman had said, of total 1,750 officers sent to Koja, only around 877 had made their retreat by boats. “I ask the Koja community, if they are keeping the bodies of dead officers, please return them. Even if it is only their heads, we will accept them,” Hotman said here Saturday. The Tanjung Priok violence erupted on Wednesday morning when about a thousand public order officers (Satpol PP) marched to the graveyard complex where there is a tomb of respected Muslim scholar, Habib Hasan bin Muhammnad Al
Hadad, better known as Mbah Priok, who spread Islam in Jakarta in the 18th century. The Priok violence caused 134 people to be hospitalized due to serious and light injuries. The victims consisted of 10 police officers, 69 public order officers, and 55 civilians. Three public order officers identified as M. Tajudin, W. Soepono and Israel Jaya, were killed in the conflict between public order officers and local residents. Besides the human casualties, 46 vehicles belonging to public order officers and the police had been burned in the clashes involving thousands of people resisting the eviction attempt at the revered tomb complex in Koja, North Jakarta.

DENPASAR – Started on April 27th 2010, Ngurah Rai Airport will use border control management system (BCSM). The system can prevent the foreign citizen who is wanted or don’t allowed to travel from entering Bali. Rohadi Iman Santoso, the staff of Immigration Department, said that the similar system had been applied in three airports in Indonesia; they are Adi Sumarmo, Adi Sucipto, and Soekarno-Hatta. “Until July 2010, the system will be implemented in 27 immigration posts throughout Indonesia,” he added. The system acquire the foreign not only being check on their passport but they will pass the taking picture and fingerprint procedures that will be taken using a biometric system. Rohadi said “from the application of the system in the three previous airports, each examination will take only 2 minutes. In Ngurah Rai, there is the separation between the foreign and Indonesian citizen so it will take faster.” He also explained that not all
foreigners must go through the BSCM procedures. For those who are under 14 years old, hold diplomatic passport, and already own temporary staying permit or KITAS/ KITAP. The procedures will only be done once so if the same person enters Indonesia for the second time, they don’t have to do it again because the data already being stored in the database. BSCM is the checking system which will was started to apply in 2005 but at first the system must go through probation time in 5 airports, Soekarno-Hatta, Juanda, Polonia, Ngurah Rai, and Batam. The airports were being chosen because 70% of the traffic happens in the areas. The system is also being applied in US, Japan, and France. The system will be applied in 27 immi-
gration posts throughout Indonesia, not only in airports but also in harbor such as in Batam and Bintan. Meawhile Heru Legowo, the General Manager of Angkasa Pura Ngurah Rai Airport, added that starting from this year all of passengers who have flight tickets will received insurance whether it is domestic or foreign flights. President and ministers arrive in Bali for three days working meeting Antara
DENPASAR - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono arrived here on Sunday for a working visit until Thursday. President Yudhoyono and entourage were greeted by Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika upon arrival at the city’s Ngurah Rai Airport at 09.50 a.m.

RS Sanglah receive assistance for poor patients IBP
DENPASAR - PT. Sido Muncul, the company that produce Indonesian traditional medicine or jamu, gave 150 million rupiah to Sanglah hospital in Denpasar. The fund was received by the Financial Director of Sanglah Hospital, dr. A.A Saraswati accompanied by the Public and Operational Director, drg. Triputro Nugroho. Irwan Hidayat, the Director of Sido Muncul, said that the social act is being done in the Tolak Angin - Karnaval SCTV event which was started in Bandung recently. Sido Muncul which is focusing on herbal medicine is trying to encourage the corporate social responsibility (CSR) especially in the humanitarian sector. “In addition to assist the sick ones, we also give assistance to the disaster victims and homeless children,” he added. The fund is given directly to the hospital and hopefully will be used to assist the patient need assistance. In Sanglah there are 10 patients who needed immediate assistance and the total fund needed is 163 million rupiah. Saraswati said that the hospital highly appreciated the fund given
by Sido Muncul. She stated the patients often facing difficulties in taking medical treatment because their limited fund. Through the help of donators such as Sido Muncul, the patients will receive proper treatment. She explained that currently, there are Jamkesmas and JKBM program that help the patients but not all medication can be paid using those programs. “Every month, the
debt of the patients could up to 500 million rupiah,” she added. PREPARATION: Season catfish with salt, pepper and limejuice and marinate for 30 minutes. Deep fry fish over medium heat for 10 minutes until crispy. While the fish is marinating, combine all remaining ingredients in saucepan and bring to the boil over medium heat. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, until coconut milk breaks apart and sauce becomes oily and clear rather than creamy. Pour the sauce over the fried fish and serve.

WASHINGTON - A White House plan to reform regulation of the financial sector has already attracted Republican opposition, but US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is “very confident” the overhaul will pass. “I am very confident that we’re going to have the votes for a strong package of financial reforms that’ll bring derivative markets out of the dark, help protect the taxpayers from having to fund future bailouts,” he told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” in an interview to air Sunday. President Barack Obama has made legislation introducing new oversight of the financial system his next big priority, and has pledged to veto any bill that does not include new regulation of derivatives. But Republicans have already
signaled opposition to the overhaul and a Democratic reform bill that passed out of the Senate Banking Committee failed to a attract a single Republican vote. Derivatives trading came under the spotlight early in the economic crisis, when it emerged that bundled-together mortgage products had a paper value that bore no resemblance to their true value. The resulting losses blew a hole in the finances of banks like Lehman Brothers, forcing them into bankruptcy and pushing others close to collapse.
Critics say the opaque trade in derivatives must now take place on open exchanges, where they can be more heavily regulated and scrutinized by investors. Geithner said new regulations “with teeth” were the best way to prevent future financial meltdowns. “You want a system that acts preemptively to prevent these things from happening,” he said. “The best way to protect Americans from these things happening is to put a stronger system in place where people were able to act ahead of the storm.”
Debt crisis a shocking wake-up call for Greeks The debt crisis rocking their country has brought Greeks to the startling realisation that life could irreversibly change as their government ponders seeking outside help with its loans. Less than a decade ago, Greeks joined a newly-minted, powerful single European currency that promised prosperity and affordable European Union imports that previously carried a high cost in Greek drachmas. Times were good, for a while. Though the cost of an average basket of goods did not decline as hoped, cheap money gave rise to a generation of Greek customers accustomed to buying everything on credit, from cars and homes to summer holidays. But easy living frequently came at the expense of a state that had to sustain a growing army of civil servants appointed by votehungry politicians and was chronically short of tax and social payments. Fast forward to this week, when the Greek government set the stage for a possible bailout by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund after being forced to borrow money on world markets at stubbornly high and potentially untenable interest rates.
“We are making all the preparatory moves” required for a possible request, Prime Minister George Papandreou told lawmakers in Athens, referring to fall-back loans running into the tens of billions of euros. With the global financial crisis casting a pitiless spotlight on sovereign debt, Greece has found itself at the mercy of international markets as it struggles to reduce a debt of nearly 300 billion euros (407 billion dollars). Many Greeks say the gravity of the crisis is an overdue wakeup call for the country, which has lived beyond its means for years. “Sooner or later the government will have to adopt measures which seem like science fiction today in the Greek political world. It ought to start preparing public opinion and its own cadres,” liberal Kathimerini daily said on Friday. “The time for gabble has passed, the time of painful reality is coming,” it said. For a few, the government’s plight has even elicited sympathy. “I’ve been skimping on my taxes for years but I won’t this time round. Prosecutors argue Polanski victim can’t alter case Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES – Roman Polanski’s victim cannot ask for the 32-year-old sex case to be dismissed against the fugitive director or otherwise impact the case, prosecutors argued in a court filing Friday. In a filing to the California Second District Court of Appeal, Los Angeles County prosecutors argue a recent constitutional revision spelling out crime victims’ rights does not grant them the power to determine the outcome of criminal cases. They are also asking the appeals court to reject requests by Polanski’s victim, Samantha Geimer, to have the case heard in another county and unseal recent testimony by a former prosecutor. Prosecutors argue that granting her request for dismissal would “fundamentally alter the way in which crimes are prosecuted.” The filing argues that if victims were parties to criminal cases, cases could be dropped either through intimidation, coercion or public pressure. Geimer petitioned the appeals court to dismiss the case and make the other rulings in a March petition. That filing argued a 2008 constitutional amendment, dubbed Marsy’s Law, gives victims more input into criminal cases. Geimer’s attorney, Lawrence Silver, has argued twice before that the amendment meant his client’s request for
dismissal should be considered. Silver did not return a phone message seeking comment Friday. Geimer’s filing is a separate appeal from one being pursued by Polanski’s attorneys that seeks the appointment of a special counsel to investigate alleged judicial misconduct in the case. The court has not yet ruled on Polanski’s appeal. California voters in November 2008 approved a measure that wrote specific victims’ rights into the state constitution, including giving them more notice about criminal proceedings. Geimer has repeatedly sought to have the case dismissed, arguing that renewed interest of the case and media coverage has led to her being repeatedly victimized. Polanski was accused in 1977 of plying Geimer, then age 13, with champagne and part of a Quaalude pill then raping her at Jack Nicholson’s house. Polanski was indicted on six felony counts, including rape by use of drugs, child molesting and sodomy. He later pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse. Authorities are seeking Polanski’s extradition from Switzerland so he can be sentenced on the charge. The Academy Award-winning director fled the United States on the eve of sentencing in 1978. He remains on house arrest in his chalet in the Swiss luxury resort of Gstaad.
Onstage, faded rock posters and multiple TV screens provide the backdrop for 95 minutes of singing, dancing and Green Day songs. The plot centers on three young men trying to escape dead-end suburban lives. Will fails to get in gear even when his girlfriend falls pregnant; the other two “succeed,” in a manner of speaking. Tunny winds up being seduced by a flashy military recruiter, goes to war and promptly loses a leg and gains a nurse to love. The other, the Jesus of Suburbia on 2004’s “American Idiot” album, renamed Johnny, picks up a dope habit and girlfriend, loses the latter because of the former and winds up right back where he started. He comes home, along with his friends, emboldened with a new sense of personal responsibility. The story contains almost no spoken dialogue — instead, it’s told mostly through songs from “Americ a n Idiot” and its 2009 followup album, “21st Century Breakd o w n . ” There’s a band onstage, and though the songs’ arrangements are fuller and richer as
adapted for the theater, they retain the scrappy quality of the originals. The ending isn’t exactly a happy one, but it’s not “King Lear,” either, at least according to Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. “The characters all made mistakes and learned lessons,” he says. “It’s still the beginning of a journey for them. For Johnny, he doesn’t blame everything on his parents or society anymore, and he can move forward.” While the show tells the story of Johnny’s transition, it also represents the maturation of Green Day. When the band first broke out of the Bay Area with snotty three-chord punk in the early ’90s, the last place a n y o n e would expect to see it would be on the Great
White Way. But as “American Idiot” demonstrates, things rarely turn out the way you think they will. ROCKING THE BOARDS
The staged rock opera has been around since “Hair” premiered in 1968 and was reborn when “Rent” hit it big in 1996, but a musical based on a single album is a more ambitious concept, attempted only once before on Broadway, with the Who’s “Tommy” in 1993 (which also had its Broadway premiere at the St. James). But incorporating rock in a production has become so common that 10 out of 24 musicals that will be on Broadway in April can loosely be considered rock musicals. BERLIN – Hydrogen, one of Earth’s most abundant elements, once was seen as green energy’s answer to the petroleum-driven car: easy to produce, available everywhere and nonpolluting when burned. Hydrogen energy was defeated by a mountain of obstacles — the fear of explosion by the highly flammable gas, the difficulty of carrying the fuel in large, heavy tanks in the vehicle, and the lack of a refueling network. Automakers turned to biofuels, electricity or the gas-electric hybrid. But hydrogen, it turns out, never was completely out of the race. Now Israeli scientists and entrepreneurs claim to have brought hydrogen energy a step closer by putting it in much smaller, lighter containers. Rather than using metal or composite cylinders of compressed gas that look like bulky scuba gear, hydrogen is packed into glass filaments which, once out of the lab, will be only slightly thicker than a human hair. These 370 glass capillaries are bundled into a glass tube called a capillary array, about the width of a drinking straw. The scientists say 11,000 such arrays will fuel a car for 400 kilometers (240 miles), take less than half the space and weight of tanks currently installed in the few hydrogen cars now available.
“We have shown new materials that can store more hydrogen than any other system,” says Dan Eliezer, chief scientist of C.En Ltd., the company based in Geneva, Switzerland, where the Israelis are developing their invention. The scientists make no attempt to improve the standard fuel cell, which is not much different today from when it was invented more than 150 years ago. A fuel cell makes electricity from chemical reactions involving hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapor as a byproduct. The fuel cell can be compared with a standard car’s engine, while the capillary arrays would be comparable to the gasoline tank. The system was unveiled in Berlin at a demonstration for The Associated Press at the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, known as BAM, which has been testing the materials since 2008 and has pronounced the system safe. Also attending was a representative of Italian-based Generali Insurance, which has invested $10 million in the project.
While its backers call the technology a breakthrough, it is unlikely to gain traction without a large injection of capital to scale up development. It also would need a distribution system and the support of major car companies, which have poured billions of dollars into their own closely guarded research programs. Auto companies “are still investing significant amounts of money in hydrogen and fuel cells,” and have hundreds of researchers working on the technology, said David Hart, director of E4tech, a business and energy consultancy in London. Automakers refuse to disclose details of their research or funding. Hart said the glass capillaries appear to be an “interesting” technology that would be “very significant” if it were to provide the energy claimed by the company. But if it means creating a new refueling infrastructure, “it may still not be the right answer for cars,” he said. Like electric cars, the driving force behind hydrogen research is the need to break away from oil and rein in emissions of greenhouse gases blamed for climate change, especially carbon dioxide from industry and transport. Transportation adds about 13 percent of manmade carbon to the atmosphere.

WASHINGTON – Most people view the iPad as a slick multi-media entertainment platform, but Gregg Vanderheiden, a university professor, sees other potential uses for Apple’s new touchscreen device. “Say you have somebody who’s had a stroke, for example, and they wake up and they can’t communicate,” said Vanderheiden, director of the Trace Research and Development Center at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. “Instead of buying a 5,000-dollar communications aid you take out your iPad and download an app and — bam! — they can communicate,” he told AFP. The Trace Center helps people who are unable to speak and have disabilities to communicate and Vanderheiden is one of a number of researchers and others excited about the iPad as a relatively lowcost communications tool. “There’s a lot of interest in the iPad,” said Karen Sheehan, the executive director of the Alliance for Technology Access, a Californiabased group that seeks to expand the use of technology by children and adults with disabilities. Stroke victims, people with spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy or ALS, a paralysing nerve disease, and children or adults with autism are seen as just some of those who could potentially benefit from the iPad.
“Anyone who’s non-verbal and needs a device to speak for them,” said Sheehan. “People with Alzheimer’s who do better with graphic-based communication boards instead of trying to search for a word. “People with traumatic brain injury, soldiers coming back from Iraq or people who’ve been in automobile accidents.” Sheehan said “there are a lot of powerful communications devices out there, some very good companies, but they tend to run into the thousands of dollars, which can be prohibitive for a lot of people. “You can take the iPad and turn it into a communications device very inexpensively,” she said. The cheapest iPad costs 499 dollars and the most expensive 829 dollars. A company called AssistiveWare has already adapted for the iPad a communications application called “Proloquo2Go” it designed for the iPhone and the iPod Touch and is offering it for 189.99 dollars in Apple’s App Store. “Prologuo2Go” allows people who have difficulty speaking to communicate using symbols to represent phrases or by typing in what they want to say and having it converted by text-to-speech technology into a natural sounding voice. Sheehan said the iPad’s large touchscreen makes it potentially more useful to a wider range of people than the iPhone or the iPod Touch.

DENVER – It had been a while since Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith found the net like this. Anthony scored a playoff career-high 42 points and Smith’s fourth-quarter flurry of 3-pointers helped the Denver Nuggets beat the injury-riddled Utah Jazz 126-113 on Saturday night in Game 1 of the playoff series. “We need that,” Anthony said after Smith scored 18 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter. “I know I said that earlier our team’s success falls on me, but J.R.’s a big part of what we do and how far we go. We need him to play the way he played — under control.” Anthony, whose previous playoff high was 41 points against Dallas in the second round last year, benefited from the absence of Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko, who re-injured his strained left calf in practice Thursday and won’t play in the series. “He just took that game over,” Carlos Boozer said. “He hit shots with hands in his face. It seemed like he barely dribbled the ball, had a onedribble pull-up or just caught it, faced up and shot it. That’s where we miss A.K.’s length.” Anthony was on a mission and C.J. Miles and Wesley Matthews were powerless to stop him. “It’s the playoffs,” Anthony said. “Tonight, shots were falling. I was patient, taking advantage of what they were doing. Kenyon Martin pulled down 12 rebounds in 34 minutes — the most he’s played since missing 18 games because of a balky left knee during the stretch run when the Nuggets fought through lots of adversity, including George Karl’s two-month absence to fight throat cancer. Assistant Adrian Dantley has run the team in Karl’s absence, and on this night, he certainly didn’t mind Smith’s flurry of fourth-quarter 3point attempts — something that drew his ire last week when Smith fired up four 3s in the final 2 minutes of a blowout win over Memphis.
Smith sank three straight 3s to break open a 90-90 game and give Denver a 99-93 lead. “The thing about it, they were good shots,” Billups said. “It wasn’t like he was coming down and having to make a crazy shot or a crazy play. It was in the offense: swing, swing, great shot. ... that’s great basketball.” A fourth 3-pointer hit the front of the iron, but Smith grabbed the long rebound himself and sliced through the lane for a finger-roll bucket that put the Nuggets ahead 101-93. “It felt good to get on, period,” Smith said. “I couldn’t hit anything. I didn’t have a rhythm. It felt good to start making shots.” Dantley loved what he saw. “You get a lot of opinions on J.R., but I’m a J.R. fan,” Dantley said.

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – World number two Caroline Wozniacki injured her right ankle and retired from her semi-final match against Vera Zvonareva at the WTA’s Family Circle Cup here on Saturday. The second-seeded Dane was down 2-4 in the first set against Zvonareva, the seventh seed from Russia, when she slid on the green clay trying to get to the net for a drop shot. Her foot stuck briefly and her ankle rolled over, the 19-yearold immediately clutching it in pain. She was helped to her chair and had the ankle taped, returning to the court to cheers from the crowd. But after Zvonareva held to take a 5-2 lead, Wozniacki double-faulted at 15-15 and called it quits. Wozniacki had been seeking her second title in as many weeks, after a triumph at Ponte Verde Beach last Sunday. Zvonareva will face fourthseeded Australian Samantha Stosur in the final. As it looks right now, it’s not too bad,” she said. Although she was pleased to be in the final, Zvonareva was sympathetic to Wozniacki’s plight. I knew I had to press at the end.” Pavlik knew he was in trouble when the cuts began. “He caught me with a nice left hand and he cut me. From there it was a battle back. He fought a smart fight. LONDON – Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has vowed his side will avoid panic after their lead at the top of the English Premier League was cut to a solitary point. Chelsea were beaten 2-1 away to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday just hours after second-placed title rivals Manchester United, the reigning English champions, had won 1-0 against Manchester City in a hardfought derby. Tottenham, who beat another of their fellow London sides contending for the title in arch-rivals Arsenal, also by a 2-1 margin, on Wednesday, fully deserved the three points that lifted them above City and into fourth position, the final place for entry into next season’s Champions League qualifiers. Ancelotti, who saw captain John Terry sent off for two bookable offences in the second half after he had conceded a penalty in the first, was convinced his players would still finish the season on top. “We know what we have to do in the next three games,” he said. “We must not have a panic now,” the Italian insisted. “We are top of the list with only three games left so every team wants to be in our place. “We have two at home and one difficult game away. We can be the best again. A one-point lead is not bad at this stage of the season, though to be sure we have to win all three games.” Chelsea’s next fixture is at home to Stoke City on Sunday April 25 and

MADRID – Champions Barcelona let Real Madrid firmly back into La Liga title race following a 0-0 draw at neighbours Espanyol on Saturday meaning Madrid can move to within one point of their rivals with a home win over Valencia on Sunday. Barca had Brazilian full back Dani Alves sent off on the hour mark and the treble winners failed to score in the league for the first time in six months and Real can now chop their four-point lead down to just one point. It was the first derby at Espanyol’s Cornella El-Prat Stadium and a bad one for Barcelona who saw a run of seven straight wins come to an end as they failed to find the back of the net in La Liga for the first time since a 0-0 draw at Valencia on October 17. Coach Pep Guardiola will hope the draw is just a blip as his side - who have beaten Real twice this season - look to get over the finishing line with just five games left in the season. “I am happy with the point against a good team,” said Guardiola. “We beat (Real) Madrid home and away and have only lost one game. We have got our 84 points by going out like we did tonight.” Barcelona have a huge game now on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan at the San Siro. Atletico Madrid are Spain’s other representatives in Europe but fell to a 2-1 defeat at Villarreal ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first leg against Liverpool at the Vicente Calderon. First half goals from Diego Godin and Giuseppe Rossi helped Villarreal go sixth, a point ahead of Athletic Bilbao. Sergio “Kun” Aguero pulled a goal back for Atletico on 64 minutes but it was not enough and their 15 league losses leave them nine points back of Villarreal with the Kings Cup final looking their best route into Europe. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was back on the Barca substitutes bench after missing the last four games through injury and with no recognised target-man Lionel Messi played down the middle.
Barca hit the crossbar in the eighth minute with Pedro’s mis-hit cross crashing off the top of the woodwork to safety. Pedro had scored in his last two league matches but it was clear that he was not going for a goal on this occasion. Forward Pablo Osvaldo had a chance for the hosts but shot over when well placed and Joan Verdu glanced a header wide on 26 minutes. Barca were not at the races in the first half and goalkeeper Victor Valdes pulled off a fine stop just before halftime to keep the scores level. A cross from the left found Osvaldo in the penalty area but the striker’s sidefooted effort was pushed on to the post brilliantly by Valdes. Valdes has been in excellent form this season to help Barca have the best defensive record in the league and prompt calls for a Spain call-up ahead of this summer’s World Cup. On 55 minutes Barca boss Pep Guardiola brought on Seydou Keita and Thierry Henry to inject some attacking threat but five minutes later the champions were reduced to ten men. Alves pulled down Jose Callejon close to the half-way line to pick up a second yellow card and leave Barcelona with one man less. The extra man didn’t help Espanyol too much but Barcelona were impotent going forward with Espanyol goalkeeper Kameni not making a notable save in the entire match. Ibrahimovic came on late but a curling effort from Messi was the closest the visitors came to an unlikely win. Elsewhere Sevilla climbed up to fourth with a comfortable 3-0 home win over nine man Sporting Gijon on Saturday taking them two points above Real Mallorca in the Champions League race. Sevilla had lost to lowly Valladolid on Tuesday but bounced back with an early goal from Mali international forward Frederic Kanoute putting them ahead before Luis Fabiano and Juan Cala scored second half goals to push Sevilla into fourth. Mallorca, two points behind in fifth, can go back into fourth place with a home victory over Osasuna on Monday.

Button wins chaotic Chinese Grand Prix China - The reigning world champion once again benefited from an early tyre call - this time staying out on slicks in the rain while most pitted for intermediates – and showed his class again from the front. Even when a safety car period eradicated the lead his tyre gamble had earned him, he kept his head in tricky conditions and even stretched away from McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages when it came down to who had looked after their tyres the best. But far from being a race of nursing the cars home, for close to 90 minutes it was frantic stuff as the weather once again played havoc
with Formula 1. The drama started early when Vitantonio Liuzzi lost control of his Force India under braking, spun and collected the Toro Rosso of Sebastien Buemi and Kamui Kobayashi’s Sauber. Adrian Sutil, Jaime Alguersuari and Rubens Barrichello were also involved and headed for repairs in the pits, while Nico Hulkenberg did well to pick his way through unscathed.
But the safety car was still required, prompting both Red Bulls, both Ferraris, Hamilton and Michael Schumacher to gamble on changing to intermediate tyres. Initially, it looked like the right call as Fernando Alonso charged past cars still on slicks. But Nico Rosberg and Button, up front having stayed out on slicks, were lapping faster just one tour later as the inters cooked quickly with the circuit not quite wet enough for them. Within a couple of laps all those to take them were back in the pits for slicks, leaving Rosberg, Button, Robert Kubica and Vitaly Petrov well

Whitmarsh not expecting pit penalty McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh does not expect any penalties to be applied for the pitlane incident between his driver Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel in today’s Chinese Grand Prix. The pair ran side by side into and out of the pitlane when they came in for slicks early in the Shanghai race. McLaren released Hamilton at virtually the same time as Vettel was allowed out by Red Bull, and with the McLaren getting a little wheelspin, they ended up wheel to wheel in the pits again.
But when asked by the BBC if he expected McLaren to be penalised for releasing Hamilton in an unsafe manner, Whitmarsh replied: “I don’t think so, I think in these conditions, both drivers release at the same time, I think it was slippery... I think we will be okay. Who knows.” McLaren eventually took a onetwo finish with Jenson Button and Hamilton. Whitmarsh said the pair had been allowed to go head to head for victory right up to the end, with Button trying to control the race from the front after passing early leader Nico Rosberg, and Hamilton recovering from his additional
change of tyres. “Fantastic job by both drivers, they obviously had different strategies, but they ran the race just great,” he said. “It was tense, those last laps, but they were racing, they were going for it. They were quicker than everyone else in those conditions. We took that as our view of how to go racing, but boy did it make a long race for us. “Lewis had a fantastic race, again so many overtaking moves. Jenson was a little bit lighter on his tyres. We played the right strategy for both cars.”

No sooner had the likes of Hamilton and Vettel fought their way back up the order that the rain started again, heavier this time. Leader Rosberg was caught out and a brief off-track excursion allowed Button a run at him to take the lead, and soon after everyone was in the pits to get inters back on. The rain gifted Button, Rosberg and the Renaults a free pitstop, so the leaders 50-second advantage remained. But the safety car was back out after Alguersuari clipped the back of an HRT car and left front wing debris scattered on the track. Button bunched the pack right up for the restart and, with the new rule about overtaking from the pitlane line, rather than the start/finish line, Vettel tried to take advantage to mug Hamilton into the last corner. But it backfired for his Red Bull team as he only succeeded in forcing Hamilton wide and shoving Webber off the track on the outside, costing the Aussie several places. Hamilton once again had to make his way back to the front and his journey included a great battle with Schumacher. The old hand defended brilliantly for the first few advances, despite struggling for traction in his Mercedes. But eventually Hamilton made it stick with an opportunistic
dive between Turns 8 and 9 – something that became his staple move of the day. He then caught and passed Rosberg for second, just before the field descended on the pitlane once more for a final fresh set of intermediate tyres. Things eventually settled down for the last 20 laps, as Button kept Hamilton at a safe distance. There was just a brief scare four laps from home when he overshot the final hairpin. But Hamilton was also struggling to keep his car on the road with fast-balding inters. Rosberg couldn’t quite challenge for the victory but had no trouble keeping Fernando Alonso at bay for third – the Spaniard getting in reach of the podium despite five pitstops, including a drivethrough for jumping the start. Kubica continued Renault’s good form, capitalising on his early decision to stay on slicks to hold onto fifth. Vettel looked like homing in on Kubica in the closing stages but never threatened. Webber had another day of missed opportunities and couldn’t make his way forward at the same rate as Hamilton or Vettel, but he also had his share of misfortune. Already down the order he gambled on an earlier final stop, but it just left him in more tyre trouble than most come the end of the race and he was mugged for seventh by Petrov two laps from the end.
