LONDON — “I’m talking ‘bout my generation,” sang The Who, capping a raucous, rock ‘n’ roll Olympic closing ceremony. But which generation? When the band members first sang “My Generation,” they were in their 20s. Now they are pushing 70. Like the Olympic torch passing from one runner to another, the London games’ closing ceremony was an all-ages affair designed to show the flame of British creativity leaping from one age group to the next.

LOS ANGELES — “The Dark Knight Rises” has finally fallen out of firstplace at the weekend box office. Jeremy Renner’s action tale “The Bourne Legacy” took over as the No. 1 movie with a $40.3 million debut, according to studio estimates Sunday. Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis’ political comedy “The Campaign” opened at No. 2 with $27.4 million. The new movies pushed “The Dark Knight Rises” down to third-place with $19.5 million, raising the superhero blockbuster’s three-week domestic total to $390.1 million. The weekend’s other new wide release, Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones’ marital comic drama “Hope Springs,” opened at No. 4 with $15.6 million. “The Dark Knight Rises” had been the No. 1 movie for three-straight weekends since debuting amid tragedy as a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 at a midnight screening of the film on opening day in Colorado. LONDON — With a little British pomp and a lot of British pop, London brought the curtain down on a glorious Olympic Games on Sunday in a spectacular, technicolor pageant of landmarks, lightshows and lots of fun. The closing ceremony offered a sensory blast including rock ‘n’ roll rickshaws, dustbin percussionists, an exploding yellow car and a marching band in red tunics and bearskin hats. There was a show-stopping reunion of the Spice Girls and a comedy sequence featuring Monty Python’s Eric Idle performing “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” accompanied by Roman centurions, Scottish bagpipers and a human cannonball. It was all delivered in a psychedelic mashup that had 80,000 fans at Olympic Stadium stomping, cheering and singing along. Organizers estimated 300 million or more were watching around the world. Festive and fast-moving, the ceremony opened with pop bands Madness, Pet Shop Boys and One Direction, a shout-out to Winston Churchill and a tribute to the Union Jack — the floor of Olympic Stadium floor arranged to resemble the British flag. Monochrome recreations of London landmarks were covered in newsprint, from Big Ben’s clock tower and Tower Bridge to the London Eye ferris wheel and the chubby highrise known as the Gherkin. According to Astika, establishment of the joint post in Ubung Terminal would be officially opened on Monday (Aug 13). He predicted, the entourage of homecomers would continue to increase until two days before the Eid. “As

planned, we will set up the joint post with police department tomorrow morning (Monday—Ed). But, this morning (Sunday—Ed) I’ve seen a surge in the number of passengers,” he said. Similar to the experience in

previous years, the passengers seven days prior to the Eid were still dominated by homecomers from west regions such as Bandung, Jakarta and surrounding areas. Meanwhile, homecomers from East Java usually increased three to two days prior to the Eid. “We predict the peak surge of passengers will occur three to two days prior to the Eid. On this period, the passengers will be dominated by homecomers

from the regions being not too far from Bali as those from Banyuwangi, Jember, Malang, Blitar and other regions around East Java,” he said. Based on the data of Ubung Terminal, the surge of passengers had occurred since Saturday (Aug 11). Compared to previous days, the surge in passengers reached approximately 40 percent. Since August 9, the number of interprovincial city (AKAP) bus in

Ubung Terminal had increased 90 percent compared to normal days. On normal days, the AKAP bus only amounted to 35 units, but on August 9 reached 65 units. Such an increase was followed by an increase in the number of passengers. The AKAP passengers on August 8, 2012 came to 952 and then jumped to 1,468 passengers on August 9. City hotel concept threats home stay in Ubud Gianyar (Bali Post)—

Construction of hotel in Bali featuring a minimalist concept and ignoring the building coverage ratio (KDB) with at least 60 percent of the existing land is now turning ubiquitous. Even, the concept of city hotel is alleged to have entered the area of Gianyar. As a result, it makes the hoteliers and home stay owners in Ubud apprehensive. Proliferation of accommodation property applied a city hotel concept has kindled a number of hoteliers and home stay owners to urge the Gianyar Government in order it makes a regulation regarding the construction of those hotels and protect the existence of home stay owned by local residents in Ubud. He intended to avoid the crowds, but when vehicle went along the side the front right wheel crashed a concrete divider until destroyed. Being panicky, Koko was trying to control his vehicle, but unfortunately the two front wheels had gone into the road edge and finally the whole vehicle body plunged into the steep ravine with a height of about 15 meters. He felt if the vehicle was once upside down, until finally the vehicle body was hindered by bamboo trees. He struggled to go out of the car because he was wearing a seat belt. “I tried to get out of the car and asked for help but no one

helped,” he said. Having gone out of the car, Koko then tried to seek help from local residents. However, on the road he did not see anyone. He was immediately scared when he realized if the crowds dressed in customary attires were only hallucination. After that, he immediately contacted his boss in Denpasar to ask for help. Up to Sunday afternoon the car was not withdrawn yet as the crane service brought in from Denpasar had not arrived on the scene. As a result of the incident, front body of the vehicle were destroyed, while the hood was wrecked. In addition, the front windshield shattered and the fuel tank leaked. Meanwhile, Koko got bruises on chest, legs and forehead due to collision when the vehicle plunged into the ravine.

A sedan falls into a ravine, driver survives

A Toyota Vios with license plate DK 147 D fell into a ravine as high as 15 meters at the border of Munduk and Wanagiri village in Sukasada subdistrict, around 10:00 p.m. local time Saturday night (Aug 11). The driver of black metallic sedan, Koko Prasetia, 30, a resident of Petaunan village, Jajag subdistict, Banyuwangi, East Java, survived and only got light injury. Initially, Koko came from Denpasar to transfer a passenger looking for a cottage at Munduk village. On the way back to Denpasar, the rental car got an incident of plunging into a ravine. The number of homecomers leaving Bali through Gilimanuk Harbor began to soar on Sunday morning (Aug 12). Homecomers who rode a motorcycle looked so crowded at that morning. Since 07:00 a.m. local time, the ticket counter of motorcycle in Gilimanuk had been thronged and caused a line, while the ticket counter of car and truck tended to be quieter. The surge in the incoming vehicles caused the motorcycles to wait in a tent of the harbor. Despite a line, since the cars and other vehicles were quieter, the line of motorcycle could reduce more quickly. Then, the incoming vessels were directed to transport more homecomers by motorcycle. Approaching the midday, more and more motorcycles came into the line and they reached out of the ticket counter right in the tent of vehicle papers checkpoint. Despite the increase, the harbor authority on Sunday still opened single ticket counter for motorcycle. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Severed Hands Discovered in Ancient Egypt Palace

New Robot Crawls Like an Earthworm

Dubbed the “Meshworm,” a new bio-inspired robot stretches and contracts to crawl across the ground like an earthworm. But unlike its living, breathing counterpart, this artificial creature is durable enough to survive being bludgeoned by a hammer. “You can throw it, and it won’t collapse. Most mechanical parts are rigid and fragile at small scale, but the parts in Meshworms are all fibrous and flexible,” said mechanical engineering researcher Sangbae Kim in a statement from MIT. “The muscles are soft, and the body is soft … we’re starting to show some body-morphing capability.” Earthworms have two muscle groups in their bodies that work together to help it move on the

ground. Circular muscle fibers that wrap around the worm’s tubular body move it forward and muscle fibers that run along the worm’s length move it right and left. The researchers tried to imitate this structure for their robot. They made a long tube-like body with a sheet of flexible polymer mesh and created artificial muscles with a nickel-titanium alloy. Like the earthworm’s muscles, some of these metal wires were coiled around the

robot while others spanned its body from front to back, the statement from MIT said. [See EarthwormRobot Video] A small battery and circuit board was added to the tube to produce a current to heat the wires at certain segments along the body. Heat causes the “muscles” to contract and the researchers developed algorithms to control the wires’ heating and cooling, directing different patterns of movement.

A team of archaeologists excavating a palace in the ancient city of Avaris, in Egypt, has made a gruesome discovery. The archaeologists have unearthed the skeletons of 16 human hands buried in four pits. Two of the pits, located in front of what is believed to be a throne room, hold one hand each. Two other pits, constructed at a slightly later time in an outer space of the palace, contain the 14 remaining hands. They are all right hands; there are no lefts. “Most of the hands are quite large and some of them are very large,” Manfred Bietak, project and field director of the excavations, told LiveScience. The finds, made in the Nile Delta northeast of Cairo, date back about 3,600 years to a time when the Hyksos, a people believed to be originally from northern Canaan, controlled part of Egypt and made their capital at Avaris a location known today as Tell el-Daba. Iran on Sunday stepped up relief operations in shattered villages in its northeast after saying rescue operations were completed following a double earthquake which cost 227 lives and injured 1,380 people. “Search and rescue operations have ended and we are now working to ensure survivors’ needs in terms of shelter and food,” Interior Minister Moustafa Mohammad-Najjar told state television as he announced the casualty toll. He and other officials said the rubble left by Saturday’s earthquakes hid no more survivors, making further rescue activities unnecessary. Around half of the 600 villages located in the disaster zone, an area northeast of the city of Tabriz, were damaged, some of them badly, he said. A dozen or more were completely razed. The first of the earthquakes registered a strong 6.4 on the moment magnitude scale, according to the US Geological Survey which monitors seismic activity worldwide. The second, almost as strong at 6.3 on the scale, rumbled

G20 officials plan to hold a conference call in the week of August 27 to discuss a meeting, which could be held in late September or early October, the Financial Times said, quoting four unnamed officials familiar with the conversations. Benchmark Chicago corn climbed to an all-time high on Friday after the U.S. Department of Agriculture cut its production estimate by 17 percent, intensifying fears the world is headed for a repeat of the 2008 food price crisis. The G20 meeting would be the first of the Rapid Response Forum, a newly created body to promote early discussion among decision-level officials about abnormal international market conditions, the newspaper said. The forum is part of the G20-backed Agricultural Market Information System, created last year at the initiative of France and seen as a key policy response to the 2007-08 crisis, it said. Strong retail figures would lift the oil price, he said. Other U.S. economic data this week includes industrial production figures for July. On Friday, the IEA lowered its forecast for global crude demand for the year to 89.6 million barrels a day from 89.9 million. That included a downward revision of 200,000 barrels a day for China. The agency also cut its forecast for oil demand in 2013 to 90.5 million barrels per day from 90.9 million previously. The IEA said the reduction was due to a “combination of persistently high prices and a weak economic backdrop.” In other futures trading, heating oil rose 1.5 cents to $3.035 per gallon. Natural gas was down 2.3 cents at $2.747 per 1,000 cubic feet. Gasoline was up 2.4 cents at $3.03 per gallon.

CAIRO - Egypt’s Islamist President Mohamed Mursi dismissed Cairo’s two top generals and quashed a military order that had curbed the new leader’s powers, in a move that further stamped his authority on the country and its army. There had been much debate over the fate of Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, 76, who until Mursi’s election in June had ruled Egypt as head of a military council since Hosni Mubarak was toppled last year. The timing of Sunday’s announcement to replace him as armed forces head was nevertheless a surprise. However, an embarrassing debacle for the army on the border with Israel, where 16 Egyptian troops were killed by Islamist militants a week ago, may have given Mursi the opening he needed to step up the pace in rolling back the military’s influence, pushing aside Tantawi and military chief of staff Sami Enan. Mursi’s spokesman called it a “sovereign” decision by the head of state, and aimed at “pumping new blood” into an army that has shown signs of hoping to control

the novice president. A fellow Islamist said Egypt could not go on having “two heads”. Secular activists, wary of political Islam, nonetheless welcomed a “first step toward establishing a civilian state”. Mursi himself later said: “The decisions I took today were not meant ever to target certain persons, nor did I intend to embarrass institutions, nor was my aim to narrow freedoms. “I did not mean to send a negative message about anyone, but my aim was the benefit of this nation and its people,” he said, praising the work of the armed forces and saying his decision would free them to focus on their professional tasks. military rule over the new democracy, and whittles away powers still held by the army, from whose ranks all Egyptian presidents for the past 60 years had been drawn until the voting in June. A member of the military council told Reuters that Mursi, a moderate Islamist party official popularly elected in June but with constitutional powers sharply circumscribed in advance by the generals, had consulted Tantawi and General Enan, 64, before ordering both men to retire. But it was not clear how far the generals, members of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), actually consented to a move that reveals a reordering of Egypt’s political forces as they all wait for a new constitution, shifting more powers towards Mursi and his long-suppressed Muslim Brotherhood.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer was left with a gaping hole on one side after it collided with an oil tanker early Sunday just outside the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The collision left a breach about 10 feet by 10 feet (three by three meters) in the starboard side of USS Porter. No one was injured on either vessel, the U.S. Navy said in a statement. The collision with the Panamanian-flagged and Japanese-owned bulk oil tanker M/V Otowasan happened about 1 a.m. local time. Photos released by the Navy showed workers standing amid twisted metal and other debris hanging down from the hole. The cause of the incident is under investigation, the Navy said, though the collision was not “combat related.” There were no reports of spills or leakages from either the USS Porter or the Otowasan, the Navy said. Navy spokesman Greg Raelson said the destroyer now is in port in Jebel Ali, Dubai. “We’re just happy there were no injuries,” he said. “An investigation is under way.” The USS Porter is on a scheduled deployment to the U.S. 5th Fleet, which is based in Bahrain, an island nation in the Gulf, near Iran. The Strait of Hormuz, at the mouth of the Gulf, is a crowded and tense waterway where one-fifth of the world’s oil is routed. LONDON - The U.S. men’s and women’s basketball teams made their expected sweep of London gold but it was not an open and shut case for the NBA stars in a tough test in the gold medal game against a polished Spain team. The U.S. men made it look easy through most of the tournament with some extraordinary ‘hybrids’ - supremely talented players able to thrive in a variety of roles. A spate of injuries before the final U.S. training camp robbed the American men of some of their most potent pivot men, including Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh. Popular tabloid The Sun splashed “DREAM GB, We’re world beaters” across its front page. “Britain has shown the world a happy and united face, with Team GB’s multicultural mix holding a mirror to a nation finding its own new voice and identity,” suggested its editorial. “So let’s be proud today. To be British is to be a winner again,” it concluded. The Times praised a Games which were “almost dreamlike in their seamlessness and drama.” “They have occasioned so

much breathless British patriotism that the world may wonder if we were ever serious about self-deprecation, but the point is, we were. “No one is as surprised as the hosts that this fraught and complex festival of striving should have gone so well,” it added, calling the Games a “great exhibition of competence, creativity, athleticism and sportsmanship.” The Games ended on Sunday with a camp closing ceremony which celebrated Britain’s pop music history. “What a finale!”
