‘Skyfall,’ ‘Guardians’ duel for box-office win

LOS ANGELES — James Bond is in a box-office photo finish with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny over what looks to be the last slow weekend of the holidays. According to studio estimates Sunday, Sony’s Bond tale “Skyfall” took in $11 million to move back to No. 1 in its fifth weekend. That put it narrowly ahead of Paramount’s “Rise of the Guardians,” the animated adventure of Santa, the Easter Bunny and other mythological heroes that pulled in $10.5 million. The two movies inched ahead of Summit Entertainment’s “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2,” which had been tops for three-straight weekends. The “Twilight” finale earned $9.2 million, slipping into a tight race for No. 3 with Disney’s “Lincoln,” which was close behind with $9.1 million. The top movies were bunched up so closely that rankings could change once final weekend revenues are released Monday. The weekend’s only new wide release, Gerard Butler’s romantic comedy “Playing for Keeps,” flopped with just $6 mil-
lion, coming in at No. 6. “Skyfall” raised its domestic total to $261.6 million and added $20.3 million overseas to bring its international income to $656.6 million. At $918 million worldwide, “Skyfall” has the best cash haul ever for the Bond franchise and surpassed “Spider-Man 3” at $890 million to become Sony’s top-grossing hit. The “Twilight” finale also is a franchise record-breaker, surpassing the $710 million worldwide haul of last year’s “Breaking Dawn — Part 1.” The finale’s domestic total now stands at $268.7 million. “Rise of the Guardians” led the international box office with $26 million, followed by 20th Century Fox’s “Life of Pi” at $23.8 million. It was another traditionally quiet post-Thanksgiving weekend, with big November releases continuing to
dominate in the lull before a pre-Christmas onslaught of movies. The box office is expected to soar next weekend with the arrival of part one of “The Hobbit,” Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” prelude. After that comes a steady rush of action, comedy and drama through year’s end, including Tom Cruise’s “Jack Reacher,” Quentin Tarantino and Jamie Foxx’s “Django Unchained,” Seth Rogen’s “The Guilt Trip” and Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe’s “Les Miserables.” “The last couple of weeks of the year are some of the strongest every year,” said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. “We are on the cusp of some really huge box office. There’s a lot of money still left in the year despite this slow period right now.”

So, instantly I just started looking for stuff we could do together and then he came to me with this story, and so we just started writing.” Writing with John was so easy that it reminded Matt of writing with his longtime friend and “Good Will Hunting” co-writer, Ben Affleck. “It was eerily similar [to writing with Ben], actually,” he said of writing the film’s script at his home, with his four daughters around. “I laughed a lot [with John], which I did with Ben too. I had a lot of laughs. I mean, my wife said to me in the middle of the process, she said that she hadn’t seen me that happy ever!” Adding, “The kids were running in and out of the room and [my wife] was watching John and I write and [saw] how much fun I was having and she said, ‘This has been a great reminder to you how much you love writing.’” See Matt and John in “Promised Land” - in theaters on January 4.
DENPASAR - Ranked first in the HIV/AIDS case in Bali has become a challenge for Denpasar to continuously find out other HIV/AIDS cases indeed becoming like an iceberg phenomenon and prevent new infections. On that account, Denpasar planned for zero new HIV case, zero discrimination for people living with HIV/AIDS and zero death of HIV/AIDS in 2015. Of the HIV/AIDS cases reaching over 6,200 in Bali, according to the Head of Denpasar Health Agency, Ni Luh Putu Sri Armini, Denpasar took the portion over 40 percent. Approximately 35 percent of them belonged to productive age of 19-39 years old. In terms of HIV/AIDS incubation period reaching 5-10 years, some of the sufferers in the productive age were infected at school age. To that end, according to Armini, one of the measures taken in the prevention of HIV infection, the Denpasar Municipality held a HIV counseling at schools and established a Student Care for HIV/AIDS and Drugs (KSPAN) Cadre so that the information about HIV could reach children at school age. “We invite all the components so that the knowledge and information about HIV can be known to the community in its entirety,” said Armini. Other than the KSPAN, Denpasar also augmented the Village Cadre Caring for HIV/AIDS and Drugs whose number currently reached 600s. According to Armini, the cadres were expected to be able to provide information about HIV broadly and comprehensively. “Hopefully, the information disseminated can work like a multi level marketing. Parking problem does not only happen to Sanglah Hospital. Similar crowdedness also happens to car and motorcycle parking in Wangaya Hospital. This makes the public service in the hospital belonging to Denpasar Municipality slightly disturbed. To resolve the parking problem, the authority of Wangaya Hospital then changed the parking pattern effective on Monday (Dec 10). When contacted by phone, Deputy Director of General Administration of Wangaya Hospital, I Made Maja, explained the change lay in the arrangement of exit for cars and motorcycle parking. Parking space for motorcycle of visitors and outpatients was in front of the parking area or close to policlinic. Starting on Monday, according to Maja, the parking space of motorcycle was moved to rear parking area. “For hospital employees, we provide parking space in the back, exactly in tennis court,” said Maja when contacted on Sunday (Dec 10). Front land usually filled with motorcycles would be used for car parking space of visitors, patients and doctors in charge of the policlinic. In terms of capacity, according to Maja, the rear parking space could accommodate at least 200 motorcycles, while front parking lot could accommodate 37 cars. “So, if the front parking lot is fully occupied, the other cars will be transferred to rear parking lot. There, we also provide parking space for cars,” said Maja.
For the exit of parking area usually located in the front, precisely near the temple, was transferred to rear parking area. “The exit is near the Praja in the rear parking area,” said Maja. For patients, added Maja, the entrance of Emergency Room was the same as public visitors and out-patients. The difference, for patients of Emergency Room referred to Sanglah Hospital was provided with special exit. “The exit prepared in front parking area is specifically intended for referred patients of Emergency Room. Meanwhile, patients of Emergency Room requiring no referral and allowed to go home, remain to go out from back exit,” said Maja. In succeeding the change of parking pattern, added Maja, it was required the cooperation of all parties concerned such as the PD Parkir and internship students in Wangaya Hospital. The presence of parking attendant in the rear parking area was expected to make the service users easier to go out of the hospital. “Therefore, it can make easier both the entry and exit,” he added. To further expedite and provide wider parking lot, the Wangaya Hospital hoped that internship students in Wangaya Hospital could be provided with shuttle service by their school. It was recommended because the number of internship students in Wangaya Hospital was almost equal to number to hospital employees so that they required spacious parking area. Just a few months after completion, the revetment project of Yeh Embang River has broken down. According to information, the revetment along approximately 20 meters collapsed five days ago. A local resident met on Sunday (Dec 9) said the overflowing river water was not too high at that time. A number of residents of Yeh Embang Kauh village, Mendoyo, questioned about the quality of the river revetment project. According to the resident met it was the second collapse for the revetment. Previously, local residents had protested because the craftsmanship was assessed careless. I Made Pasar questioned about the cement and sand mixture used to glue the revetment but according to project executor it had been appropriate with standards. In fact, approximately 20 meters of the revetment was broken down on the left bank. Besides, partial collapse also occurred on the left bank, precisely under the road of Sekar Kejule hamlet, Yeh Embang Kauh village.
One of the residents, I Nyoman Oka, 25, when met admitted the collapsed revetment happened five days ago. He did not know exactly what caused the collapse of the revetment that had just been completed whereas the river water overflowed as usual after heavy rains. Allegedly, quality of the river revetment was inferior so that it was easily broken down. Hamlet Chief of Sekar Kejule, I Putu Astra Semadi, justified the collapse of river revetment that had just been accomplished. As a hamlet authority, Astra Semadi claimed to have reported the incident to provincial authority. Residents hoped the revetment could be repaired because the project
was just completed and still under maintenance. On the other hand, when contacted by journalist, the Technical Director of Bali Penida River Agency, Nengah Riasa, justified the collapse of revetment at Yeh Embang River. The damage would be soon repaired, but was still waiting for good weather. According to Riasa, the revetment collapse was caused by the peak flooding that overtopped the revetment. Flooding water eroded the material piles behind the revetment. On that account, nothing could shore up the revetment. In addition, the river flow had not been normalized yet due to budget constraints this year. (kmb26)

Charity effort supports aspiring artist IBP
I Wayan Lias is a young and very talented artist from Cegi where the Bali Dynasty Resort supported the charity project back in 2000 - As Lias grew up he wanted to continue his education at the Fine Art Faculty at the University UNDIKSHA in Singaraja, for a degree in Fine Arts and the Bali Dynasty Resort Charity effort now support him in his further education. Lias is one of the students who stands out amongst other young artists and is an excellent painter. At his home in Cegi he works in a little studio which he built himself and shares his experience and expertise with other villagers interested in Art. A selection of Lias’ art is available for sale at the resort and 50% of the money raised will directly go to supporting his education.
After his graduation he will go back to the village to teach the knowledge he gained during his study to the community for the betterment of his community, especially for the younger generation.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Is Apple’s 13-Inch Retina MacBook Pro Worth the Money?
In June, Apple released its first Retina display-capable laptop, the phenomenal 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Last month, the company unveiled the next member of the high-resolution family, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina. Apple boasts that the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina has the second-highest resolution screen on the market, a jaw-dropping 2,560 x 1,600 pixels (compared with 2,880 x 1,800 for the 15-inch beauty). Like the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina, the 13-inch model loses the optical drive –- a decision that both saves weight and allows for a larger battery. Similarly, the machine is also decidedly upgrade-unfriendly. The RAM chips are soldered into the computer and are fixed at 8GB. And while the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina comes with a solid-state drive (SSD), its capacity cannot be changed after purchase. With the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina, those limitations were worthwhile trade-offs, as the machine’s performance, screen and overall usability simply tower over anything else on the market. With the 13-inch MacBook Pro
with Retina, the situation is more complicated. The Rub: Price First, there’s the price. For the base model, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina is $1,699. That gets you a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 chip, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. For $1,999, users can upgrade to a 256GB hard drive. Other configurations with more storage space or a faster processor are also available. Make no mistake –- $1,700 for a 13-inch laptop is expensive. Very expensive. Comparatively, the 15inch MacBook Pro with Retina is a bargain. It starts at $2,199 but includes a quad-core Intel Core i7 chip, discrete graphics and has a base 256GB SSD. The fact that there’s only a $200 difference between a 256GB SSD-equipped 13-inch and the base model with a 15-inch display is problematic because for that $200, you simply get
much, much more computer. The reason that Apple can demand $1,700 for its 13-inch Macbook Pro with Retina is simple: The screen. It’s simply stunning. Apple has scaled the resolution so the 2,560 x 1,600 screen displays objects at the same size as 1,280 x 800 (the standard 13-inch MacBook Pro resolution), only now with much more clarity. If you’ve used a third- or fourthgeneration iPad or played with the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina, you know how good a Retina screen can look. Text is pixel-free. Images pop. Icon details are more enhanced. It’s almost unworl I’m ultimately conflicted about the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. On the one hand, it’s a nice machine with a fantastic screen. After using the Retina display for a few weeks, moving back to my 13-inch MacBook Air was difficult. The screen is exquisite. It’s

TORONTO - Research In Motion Ltd on Thursday outlined a program of incentives to encourage its biggest customers to run its soon-to-launch line of BlackBerry 10 devices, seeking to persuade corporations and government users to stick with its secure smartphones. RIM is betting that the devices, to be launched on January 30, will revive its fortunes. That will depend to a large extent on the response from RIM’s enterprise customers -- the business users who value BlackBerry’s strong security features. Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM, once a smartphone pioneer, has bled market share to Apple Inc’s iPhone and devices powered by Google’s market-leading Android operating system, even among the business customers who once used BlackBerry exclusively. RIM says its new devices will be faster and smoother than previous BlackBerry phones and
will have a large catalog of apps, which are crucial to the success of any new line of smartphones. It now plans to phase in a BlackBerry 10 Ready Program for enterprise customers, initially offering online training and webcasts, and then providing free trade-ups of licenses and services. “We will be aggressively reaching out to our customers to make sure they are aware of this program,” said Bryan Lee, senior director of enterprise at RIM. “We see this as really the linchpin for helping our customers to transition to BB10.” Early adoption of BlackBerry 10 by government and corporate clients will go a long way in easing the concerns of both RIM’s clients and investors. Many fear that a lackluster market reception to BB10 could seal RIM’s fate. DENPASAR - Corruption practices are increasingly commonplace committed by state officials both at central and local levels. Such corruption practices also haunt the regions in Bali. As evidence, the officials from lower-level up to several former regents in Bali have been arrested with allegation of involvement in the practices benefiting themselves. However, some indications of corruption are still ignored by law enforcement officials. “Of the few cases of corruption revealed lately, we have to honestly say that Bali is not free from corruption. Many local officials commit corruption,” said a professor of the Faculty of Law, Udayana University, Prof. IK Rai Setiabudhi, when speaking in the Year End Seminar of the Bali House with the theme ‘Corruption Is a Crime that Must Be Eradicated’ taking place at the Wantilan Hall of Bali House on Sunday (Dec 9). According to the former Dean of the Law Faculty of the Udayana University, this condition should become a collective concern because some cases had stipulated the suspect up to sending them to jail. Based on the latest data of corruption index, Bali actually occupied the fifth most corrupt regions in Indonesia. “It is a serious problem. We have to motivate the Anticorruption NGOs and wider
community to control it so that it will not get worse in the future,” said Setiabudhi. Similar opinion was revealed by Chairman of Bali Corruption Watch (BCW), Putu Wirata Dwikora. He also put particular emphasis on corruption cases in Bali that had been revealed to imprison the perpetrators. At the same time, some indications of corruption were still shelved so far. “Many indications of corruption in the regency and municipality in Bali are not followed up by the law enforcement officials. This must be our common concern,” said Dwikora. He also encouraged the officials to reveal the cases more seriously without discrimination. “If we want to be free from corruption, the existing cases must be investigated thoroughly. Do not be left unresolved,” said Dwikora.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Bali House, AA Ngurah Oka Ratmadi, who appeared as a keynote speaker in the seminar, emphasized that corruption was an extraordinary crime. That was why corruption should be eradicated. “Some headmen, subdistrict heads, regents up to ministers have now even become a suspect. It’s what happening in this republic, and I am very sad to hear that,” he said. Seeing numerous cases of corruption from the central to regional government, it was not mistaken if Indonesia was ranked as one of the most corrupt countries. “Are we not ashamed of it? Chief of Buleleng customary village, Nyoman Sutrisna, when met at his residence not long ago said that so far there were no definite evidences regarding the age of the temple located in the heart of Singaraja town. However, in reference to the village bylaw it was known if the temple belonged to khayangan tiga or trinity temple. Since it was established, the temple was introduced by the King of Buleleng as neo-geological temple. In the passage of time, function of the temple was converted into territorial temple. With the new status as a territorial temple, it became a historical evidence of Buleleng Regency that had become the Lesser Sunda Regency and the birth of Singaraja town. As the time went by, the temple buildings were damaged and renovated in 1846. The renovation itself was made by the royal family of AA Made Karangasem. “The history is pursuant to the village bylaw becoming our legacy. So far, we remain to preserve the temple as trinity temple,” he said.
According to Sutrisna, the bylaw also predetermined the temple anniversary (piodalan) held with the togetherness of residents. Based on the convention (prarem) stipulated, within the period of three years it was held five times small-scale anniversary, while in the same period was held once grandiose anniversary. For the ceremony in the Segara Temple, the residents in charge to prepare everything had been determined. They were taken from the five customary hamlets consisting of the Kampung Baru, Kampung Anyar, Kaliuntu, Bali and Banjar Jawa. Meanwhile, the temple priest officiating over the ceremony was taken from the Buleleng customary village. “The small-scale temple anniversary is held on ulian Bali or five days before Galungan. Other than worship on the temple anniversary, the worship is also carried out by residents that have just completed burial procession followed by nganyut ritual,” he explained. He added that to maintain the sanitation in the temple environment, a cleanup service was regularly organized before the temple anniversary and a cleanup service
done by specified groups. Aside from doing maintenance, the group also often organized psalmodic activities in the temple. In addition, the Buleleng customary village also hired an attendant to oversee the temple area. “Due to the support of residents and government assistance, the historical legacy we receive is still sustainable to venerate the Lord Vishnu abiding in the temple,” he said. On the other hand, Sutrisna said that because of the old age and location within the area of Buleleng Harbor attraction, the temple was frequently visited by foreign tourists. In response to this matter, his party did not too question about the temple sanctity because the entrance into the temple had been arranged in a regulation. Temple attendant would recommend visitors to wear scarves and not allow entering for those in temporary impure condition (due to family’s death or menstruation). “Every day, there are some tourists visiting the temple and we have got the rules to follow. A lawyer arrested for bringing meth

After a four-day inspection against the individual lawyer, Tedi Raharjo (TD), the investigators of Narcotics Unit of Bali Police ultimately upgraded the status of the concerned from witness to suspect. Even, the suspect living on Jalan Tukad Buaji Denpasar was immediately arrested in jail of the Denpasar Metro Police. It was confirmed by Narcotics Unit Chief of Denpasar Metro Police, I Wayan Suarda, Sunday (Dec 9). Suarda explained that stipulation of Tedi Raharjo as a suspect was based on the results of further investigation. With rebels now fighting on the doorsteps of Damascus, Assad’s forces kept up their now daily artillery strikes and air raids on eastern suburbs as well as some rebel-held districts on the capital’s outskirts. U.N. special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi met the U.S. and Russian deputy foreign ministers in Geneva for the second session of tripartite talks in less than a week, apparently in response to rising violence that now threatens to engulf Damascus. “All three parties reaffirmed their common assessment that the situation in Syria was bad and getting worse,” a statement from Brahimi said. “They stressed that a political process to end the crisis in Syria was necessary and still possible.” Notwithstanding his comments, commitment to a political process could be at risk. opposition as the sole representative of the Syrian people next week. As they got up to leave, the police rushed in and arrested the men, according to Georgian officials, who were present. TOKYO - Japan confirmed Monday the world’s third-largest economy shrank in the three months to September, stoking fears the country was slipping into a recession and fuelling speculation about fresh easing measures. Financial turmoil in Europe, an export-denting strong yen and a diplomatic row with major trade partner China have hurt Japan’s economy, dousing hopes it had cemented a recovery after last year’s quake-tsunami disaster. On Monday, data from the Cabinet Office confirmed earlier figures that showed Japan’s economy shrank 0.9 percent in the July-September quarter, or down 3.5 percent on an annualised basis. The revised data also showed growth in the previous quarter was essentially flat, slipping 0.03 percent, reversing preliminary figures which had pointed to 0.1 percent growth in the April to June quarter. That would meet the technical definition of a recession -- two successive quarters of negative growth -- but the government, the official arbiter of such matters, urged caution on interpreting the figures. The data was likely, however, to heap pressure on the Bank of Japan for more aggressive policy action to stem a slowdown in the Japanese economy. “We had already said Japan was in a recession. Today’s number strengthened our case,” said Tomo Kinoshita, chief economist at Nomura Securities in Tokyo. Separate data released Monday showed Japan’s current account surplus was down about 30 percent on-year to 376.9 billion yen ($4.56 billion) in October, although the latest figure beat market expectations for a 218 billion yen surplus, according to Dow Jones Newswires. The current account is the broadest measure of Japan’s trade with the rest of the world, including exports, tourism and overseas income. Japan’s current account surpluses have been hit by a slowing global economy and a spike in fuel imports due to the shutdown of most of the country’s nuclear reactors following the 2011 quake-and-tsunami sparked nuclear crisis. To make matters worse, the flare-up in a decades-long row over a disputed island chain has sparked a consumer boycott of Japanese products in China, damaging a more than $340-billion annual trade relationship with Beijing. Last month, Tokyo approved $10.7 billion in fresh spending to help boost the limp economy, more than double a package announced in October. The new package was announced as the nation prepares for December 16 elections which are expected to see Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and his Democratic Party of Japan defeated by the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party led by Shinzo Abe. Abe has vowed to spend heavily on public works and pressure the Bank of Japan into launching aggressive monetary easing measures to boost growth if his party wins the election. The BoJ has unveiled policy easing measures in recent months as its counterparts in the US and Europe launched major moves to counter slowing growth. The yen has been weakening as speculation grows that the BoJ will usher in further easing measures after its policy meeting this month, with the central bank’s closely-watched Tankan corporate sentiment survey due this week. “The BoJ will have no choice but to consider additional monetary easing in case its own Tankan survey shows worsening in near-term corporate sentiment,” said RBS Securities chief Japan economist Junko Nishioka.

Retain Many Antiquities from Thirteenth Century The Gelang Agung temple categorized into dang kahyangan (sanctum to venerate a sage) located at Buangga Hamlet, Getasan Village, Petang Subdistrict, is not only considered as a sanctum by local community, but also as one of the cultural heritage cornerstones. Many cultural relics originating from thirteenth century were discovered in the temple. Various stories arose concerning with the temple naming located amidst the paddy fields being far from residential areas. However, the naming is inseparable from the discovery of yellowish bronze bracelets sizing large enough. It is said the bracelet was found in the temple area. Other than bracelets, it was also found a small bronze bracelet scattered around the temple. Unfortunately, none of those bracelets are now left. Priest of the Gelang Agung temple, I Made Terum and priest of Dalem Temple of Buangga I Ketut Malen said their predecessors frequently showed off those objects. Unfortunately, they had disappeared somewhere. Now, the existence of those objects was unknown, including the preliminary evidence of the temple establishment. Surrounding communities only referred to ancient stories. In the temple was also found some perforated coins wrapped in leaves when an excavation was made. Oddly, said a community leader, Made Ngaceng, the erythrina leaf used to wrap the coins was still fresh. Those perforated coins were found during an excavation by residents and the officers of the Antiquities Reserve, Archaeological Agency for Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara Region in 1997. Except for bronze bracelets and perforated coins, according to the story, it was also found a temple mound measuring one square meter when the temple was first discovered. Afterward, the mound was excavated. As a result, it was discovered various kinds of statues. Allegedly, some relicts were still kept under the temple. Few relics excavated have now been placed in Gedong Arca. It happens because the materials of craft made by residents have been provided by nature such as leaves of hibiscus, banana, butterflies and other natural materials that have been dried. Such handicrafts are not only marketed in Bali, but also exported to Korea and other countries. Interestingly, the craftsmen at the village very rarely raise the prices although the price of materials such as glue and others has increased for several times. It is taken because the crafters worry about losing their customers if the price continues to be increased. A crafter, Jro Gede Ketut Suekan, said the demand of album handicraft until this year end was relatively normal. It could be seen from the reception of order from foreign buyers that had become their regular customers such as from Korea. Within the past few months, the customers routinely ordered various types of handicrafts made from the leaves of hibiscus, butterfly and banana sheath. The most favored products were ranging from photo album, block note, photo frame and other forms of craft. “Our order remains stable from the art shop owners in Ubud, Gianyar and surrounding areas, so that we keep on working vivaciously. He pointed out the cheapest price of his product was IDR 5,000 and the most expensive was IDR 25,000 per piece. The price had not increased despite the prices of raw materials had gone up. It was intended to maintain the customers, especially foreign buyers, so that they did not easily give up if the price of product increased for numerous times. “Yes, for the time being the prices are still normal and there is no increase. We are trying to maintain the relationship with customers in order they will not give up, so that they keep ordering our products,” he explained. As Tibetan self-immolations rise, Beijing tightens grip Reuters
BEIJING - As the number of self-immolations in restive Tibetan regions rises sharply, Beijing appears to be tightening rules against the anti-China protests despite hopes the new leadership may take a softer line against Tibet. Some experts have said Communist Party chief Xi Jinping -- whose former vice premier father had a close bond with exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama -- might adopt a more reformist approach to the troubled mountainous region when he takes over as president in March. But so far, the anti-China protests, including 81 burning cases this year, have only been met with an intensified crackdown by Chinese security forces. Beijing has defended its iron-fisted rule in Tibet, saying the remote region suffered from dire poverty, brutal exploitation of serfs and economic stagnation until 1950 when Communist troops “peacefully liberated” it. The country’s top court and public security authorities have now issued a directive that allows for criminal charges, including intentional homicide, to be filed against self-immolators and anyone who “organizes, plots, incites, coerces, entices, abets, or
assists others” in such protest. An official southwestern Gansu province newspaper explained the order on its website last week, saying authorities should prevent people from gathering to mourn a self-immolator or collect money for family members. State media reported on Sunday that police in Sichuan province detained a Tibetan monk and his nephew for “inciting” eight people to set themselves on fire since 2009. There has been a steep increase in cases of self immolation this year, and in November alone -- when Xi was named the new head of the Party -- 29 people set themselves on fire. In all, there have been 94 burnings to protest Chinese rule since 2009, according to the Tibet-government-in-exile. At least 77 people have died from their injuries. Few people know what Xi thinks of Tibet or the Dalai Lama, but his liberal-minded father’s thinking is certain to be
influential. The Dalai Lama has never met Xi but his fondness for his father is, for some, a sign that China’s next leader may take a different line on Tibet. Some expect him
to be more tolerant of Muslim Uighurs in the western region of Xinjiang, and also of Taiwan, the independently ruled island that China has vowed to take back, by force if necessary.
PORTERVILLE, Calif. — The church bell that rings out to announce the deaths of tribal members on the Tule River Indian Reservation tolled four times Sunday after a man killed his mother and her two brothers, wounded three of his young children, then died following a shootout with police. Authorities cornered Hector Celaya, 31, on a country road in the middle of citrus orchards 30 miles away from the reservation and about six hours after the shootings Saturday night. In the car with him were two daughters, 8-year-old Alyssa and 5-year-old Linea. One had life-threatening injuries; the other did not. Police did not say which. Authorities have not disclosed
what motivated Celaya to kill his relatives, who lived in a travel trailer on a family compound on the reservation of about 800 people. Balian Beach IBP
Balian is one of the most amazing surf breaks on the islands and also one of the lesser known. With a wave that is basically always working, even when the swell is low, Balian produces some amazingly consistent waves that are just beautiful to watch peel away. One of the nice things about this wave is a beach break that it is at the mouth of a river. The river breaks the waves on the way in making for a great rip to get in behind the waves. However, it does make for a strong rip that can suck you out to sea, be sure to paddle hard when getting out. But being a beach break, it provides some safety for those who are still learning and fear the reef. The surf here is best at high tide. The waves here are beautiful and it breaks deep as a A-frame with the lefty rides being longer and more accessible than the rights. But the waves are glossy are slow moving so it makes this a great spot for intermediate surfers to visit. Although the break is called Balian, the village up top is called Surabrata. Its just a little unmarked road at the village market which leads down to the break, so it can be easy to miss. Once you make it down to the beach, you are stoked. There is a great restaurant with fantastic food and good prices with an ideal view of the action on the waves. The Gado Gado was my favourite there. Also, there is a wide selection of hostels/hotels to choose from, so depending on your price range and how far you want to be from the beach, you should be able to find something suitable.

MANCHESTER, England - Robin van Persie’s stoppage-time free kick swung the Premier League title race firmly in Manchester United’s favour as they beat champions Manchester City 3-2 on Sunday in a pulsating derby fuelled by a heavy dose of sweet revenge. Victory in their neighbours’ backyard, at an Etihad Stadium where City had not lost in the league for almost two years, sent Alex Ferguson’s side six points clear of their opponents at the top of the table in what already looks like a two-horse race. Two first-half goals from Wayne Rooney had put United ahead before City pulled level thanks to Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta, only for Van Persie to shatter their comeback. It was payback time for United, who were denied a 20th English title in the final seconds of last season when City grabbed the championship on goal difference after two stoppagetime goals. On top of that, their winner came from a player City had courted before his close-season move from Arsenal to the red side of Manchester and it completed a miserable week for Roberto Mancini’s side who crashed out of Europe on Tuesday. MANCHESTER, England - Robin van Persie’s stoppage-time free kick swung the Premier League title race firmly in Manchester United’s favour as they beat champions Manchester City 3-2 on Sunday in a pulsating derby fuelled by a heavy dose of sweet revenge. Victory in their neighbours’ backyard, at an Etihad Stadium where City had not lost in the league for almost two years, sent Alex Ferguson’s side six points clear of their opponents at the top of the table in what already looks like a two-horse race. Two first-half goals from Wayne Rooney had put United ahead before City pulled level thanks to Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta, only for Van Persie to shatter their comeback. It was payback time for United, who were denied a 20th English title in the final seconds of last season when City grabbed the championship on goal difference after two stoppagetime goals. On top of that, their winner came from a player City had courted before his close-season move from Arsenal to the red side of Manchester and it completed a miserable week for Roberto Mancini’s side who crashed out of Europe on Tuesday. Van Persie’s 11th league goal of the season could end up being one of the most important if last term is anything to go by when City won both Manchester derbies, including a 6-1 demolition of United at Old Trafford, on their way to the title. “Today was special because they hadn’t lost at home for two years and both of us are contending at the top of the league,” Ferguson, whose side have 39 points from 16 games to City’s 33, told Sky Sports. “It was a fantastic game and you couldn’t take your eyes off it. Balian Beach IBP
Balian is one of the most amazing surf breaks on the islands and also one of the lesser known. With a wave that is basically always working, even when the swell is low, Balian produces some amazingly consistent waves that are just beautiful to watch peel away. One of the nice things about this wave is a beach break that it is at the mouth of a river. The river breaks the waves on the way in making for a great rip to get in behind the waves. However, it does make for a strong rip that can suck you out to sea, be sure to paddle hard when getting out. But being a beach break, it provides some safety for those who are still learning and fear the reef. The surf here is best at high tide. The waves here are beautiful and it breaks deep as a A-frame with the lefty rides being longer and more accessible than the rights. But the waves are glossy are slow moving so it makes this a great spot for intermediate surfers to visit. Although the break is called Balian, the village up top is called Surabrata. Its just a little unmarked road at the village market which leads down to the break, so it can be easy to miss. Once you make it down to the beach, you are stoked. There is a great restaurant with fantastic food and good prices with an ideal view of the action on the waves. The Gado Gado was my favourite there. Also, there is a wide selection of hostels/hotels to choose from, so depending on your price range and how far you want to be from the beach, you should be able to find something suitable.

Oklahoma City, who came into the game averaging more than 106 points, trailed the Pacers by four midway through the third quarter before seizing the momentum with a 17-3 run. “We really got after it on defense in the second half,” Thunder coach Scott Brooks told reporters. “We made them take tough shots in the third and fourth quarters and made them miss.” Kevin Durant scored 10 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, while reserve Kevin Martin added 24 for the Thunder, who are tied with San Antonio at the top of the Western Conference with a record of 17-4. SAO PAULO — Roger Federer says he won’t play as often in the next few years and hopes to compete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The 31-year-old Federer says he’ll be more mindful about the tournaments he plays in the future to make sure he can continue playing at a high level. “I have to make sure that I take care of my schedule, of my body, of my mind,” he said on Thursday. “Hopefully I can still stay on tour for many more years and hopefully play the Olympics here in three and a half years or so, so I have to look far ahead and not just the next six months.” The winner of 17 Grand Slams is in Sao Paulo hosting exhibition matches involving Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Tommy Robredo, Tommy Haas and Thomaz Bellucci. The Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, are also participating. Federer plays Bellucci, Brazil’s top-ranked player, on Thursday. As Tibetan self-immolations rise, Beijing tightens grip Reuters
BEIJING - As the number of self-immolations in restive Tibetan regions rises sharply, Beijing appears to be tightening rules against the anti-China protests despite hopes the new leadership may take a softer line against Tibet. Some experts have said Communist Party chief Xi Jinping -- whose former vice premier father had a close bond with exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama -- might adopt a more reformist approach to the troubled mountainous region when he takes over as president in March. But so far, the anti-China protests, including 81 burning cases this year, have only been met with an intensified crackdown by Chinese security forces. Beijing has defended its iron-fisted rule in Tibet, saying the remote region suffered from dire poverty, brutal exploitation of serfs and economic stagnation until 1950 when Communist troops “peacefully liberated” it. The country’s top court and public security authorities have now issued a directive that allows for criminal charges, including intentional homicide, to be filed against self-immolators and anyone who “organizes, plots, incites, coerces, entices, abets, or
assists others” in such protest. An official southwestern Gansu province newspaper explained the order on its website last week, saying authorities should prevent people from gathering to mourn a self-immolator or collect money for family members. State media reported on Sunday that police in Sichuan province detained a Tibetan monk and his nephew for “inciting” eight people to set themselves on fire since 2009. There has been a steep increase in cases of self immolation this year, and in November alone -- when Xi was named the new head of the Party -- 29 people set themselves on fire. In all, there have been 94 burnings to protest Chinese rule since 2009, according to the Tibet-government-in-exile. At least 77 people have died from their injuries. Few people know what Xi thinks of Tibet or the Dalai Lama, but his liberal-minded father’s thinking is certain to be
influential. The Dalai Lama has never met Xi but his fondness for his father is, for some, a sign that China’s next leader may take a different line on Tibet. Some expect him

PORTERVILLE, Calif. — The church bell that rings out to announce the deaths of tribal members on the Tule River Indian Reservation tolled four times Sunday after a man killed his mother and her two brothers, wounded three of his young children, then died following a shootout with police. Authorities cornered Hector Celaya, 31, on a country road in the middle of citrus orchards 30 miles away from the reservation and about six hours after the shootings Saturday night. In the car with him were two daughters, 8-year-old Alyssa and 5-year-old Linea. One had life-threatening injuries; the other did not. Police did not say which. Authorities have not disclosed
what motivated Celaya to kill his relatives, who lived in a travel trailer on a family compound on the reservation of about 800 people. TOKYO - Japan confirmed Monday the world’s third-largest economy shrank in the three months to September, stoking fears the country was slipping into a recession and fuelling speculation about fresh easing measures. Financial turmoil in Europe, an export-denting strong yen and a diplomatic row with major trade partner China have hurt Japan’s economy, dousing hopes it had cemented a recovery after last year’s quake-tsunami disaster. On Monday, data from the Cabinet Office confirmed earlier figures that showed Japan’s economy shrank 0.9 percent in the July-September quarter, or down 3.5 percent on an annualised basis. The revised data also showed growth in the previous quarter was essentially flat, slipping 0.03 percent, reversing preliminary figures which had pointed to 0.1 percent growth in the April to June quarter. That would meet the technical definition of a recession -- two successive quarters of negative growth -- but the government, the official arbiter of such matters, urged caution on interpreting the figures. The data was likely, however, to heap pressure on the Bank of Japan for more aggressive policy action to stem a slowdown in the Japanese economy. “We had already said Japan was in a recession. Today’s number strengthened our case,” said Tomo Kinoshita, chief economist at Nomura Securities in Tokyo. Separate data released Monday showed Japan’s current account surplus was down about 30 percent on-year to 376.9 billion yen ($4.56 billion) in October, although the latest figure beat market expectations for a 218 billion yen surplus, according to Dow Jones Newswires. The current account is the broadest measure of Japan’s trade with the rest of the world, including exports, tourism and overseas income. Japan’s current account surpluses have been hit by a slowing global economy and a spike in fuel imports due to the shutdown of most of the country’s nuclear reactors following the 2011 quake-and-tsunami sparked nuclear crisis. To make matters worse, the flare-up in a decades-long row over a disputed island chain has sparked a consumer boycott of Japanese products in China, damaging a more than $340-billion annual trade relationship with Beijing. Last month, Tokyo approved $10.7 billion in fresh spending to help boost the limp economy, more than double a package announced in October. The new package was announced as the nation prepares for December 16 elections which are expected to see Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and his Democratic Party of Japan defeated by the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party led by Shinzo Abe. Abe has vowed to spend heavily on public works and pressure the Bank of Japan into launching aggressive monetary easing measures to boost growth if his party wins the election. The BoJ has unveiled policy easing measures in recent months as its counterparts in the US and Europe launched major moves to counter slowing growth. The yen has been weakening as speculation grows that the BoJ will usher in further easing measures after its policy meeting this month, with the central bank’s closely-watched Tankan corporate sentiment survey due this week. “The BoJ will have no choice but to consider additional monetary easing in case its own Tankan survey shows worsening in near-term corporate sentiment,” said RBS Securities chief Japan economist Junko Nishioka.

Retain Many Antiquities from Thirteenth Century The Gelang Agung temple categorized into dang kahyangan (sanctum to venerate a sage) located at Buangga Hamlet, Getasan Village, Petang Subdistrict, is not only considered as a sanctum by local community, but also as one of the cultural heritage cornerstones. Many cultural relics originating from thirteenth century were discovered in the temple. Various stories arose concerning with the temple naming located amidst the paddy fields being far from residential areas. However, the naming is inseparable from the discovery of yellowish bronze bracelets sizing large enough. It is said the bracelet was found in the temple area. Other than bracelets, it was also found a small bronze bracelet scattered around the temple. Unfortunately, none of those bracelets are now left. Priest of the Gelang Agung temple, I Made Terum and priest of Dalem Temple of Buangga I Ketut Malen said their predecessors frequently showed off those objects. Unfortunately, they had disappeared somewhere. Now, the existence of those objects was unknown, including the preliminary evidence of the temple establishment. Surrounding communities only referred to ancient stories. In the temple was also found some perforated coins wrapped in leaves when an excavation was made. Oddly, said a community leader, Made Ngaceng, the erythrina leaf used to wrap the coins was still fresh. Those perforated coins were found during an excavation by residents and the officers of the Antiquities Reserve, Archaeological Agency for Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara Region in 1997. Except for bronze bracelets and perforated coins, according to the story, it was also found a temple mound measuring one square meter when the temple was first discovered. Afterward, the mound was excavated. As a result, it was discovered various kinds of statues. Allegedly, some relicts were still kept under the temple. Few relics excavated have now been placed in Gedong Arca. There are a statue of Lord Vishnu riding Garuda (eagle), phallus, a statue resembling lotus flower comprising three sections with octagonal base, the center of three-tiered rectangular frame, and circular pinnacle surrounded by sculpture resembling a lotus leaf. When viewing the phallus building next to it, it is likely a symbol of yoni. If both symbols are combined, then they symbolize fertility. There is also a relic of Padmasana shrine whose headboard is inscribed with Balinese script and a few fragments of the buildings are made of stone, while fragment of the building is rectangle. Chief of Buangga customary village, IGN Arnawa, stated that local community truly hoped the government to pay attention to the temple existence. He assessed the government’s attention so far was very minimal associated with physical condition of the temple and cultural relics retained inside the temple. Meanwhile, various magical stories accompanied the existence of the Gelang Agung temple. One of them mentioned that in the past many juwuk linglang oranges grew around the temple and it was believed to have capability of reviving the dead. Similarly, turmeric was said to grow in the temple area where if harvested it would turn into gold. However, if it was taken home it would no longer be gold. “So far, we have a real experience where the food during the ceremony in the temple never turns stale despite being left for many days,” Ngaceng said. Jro Mangku Terum explained the structure of the Gelang Agung temple was not much different from other sanctum in general in Bali. It had a two-tiered meru shrine used to venerate Goddess Sri. In the temple also occurred a chamber to venerate Danghyang Dwijendra. In certain seasons, especially when the paddy plant belonging to residents of Buangga and surrounding residents was attacked by diseases, they would come to pray to the temple and beg salvation. this condition will continue, so that the residents we recruit can have a job to raise their family’s prosperity,” he said. Suekan added that the current price of his products was still the same and there had been no increase. He pointed out the cheapest price of his product was IDR 5,000 and the most expensive was IDR 25,000 per piece. The price had not increased despite the prices of raw materials had gone up. It was intended to maintain the customers, especially foreign buyers, so that they did not easily give up if the price of product increased for numerous times. “Yes, for the time being the prices are still normal and there is no increase. We are trying to maintain the relationship with customers in order they will not give up, so that they keep ordering our products,” he explained. Meanwhile, the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, when making a site inspection to the typical

Is Apple’s 13-Inch Retina MacBook Pro Worth the Money?
In June, Apple released its first Retina display-capable laptop, the phenomenal 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Last month, the company unveiled the next member of the high-resolution family, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina. Apple boasts that the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina has the second-highest resolution screen on the market, a jaw-dropping 2,560 x 1,600 pixels (compared with 2,880 x 1,800 for the 15-inch beauty). Like the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina, the 13-inch model loses the optical drive –- a decision that both saves weight and allows for a larger battery. Similarly, the machine is also decidedly upgrade-unfriendly. The RAM chips are soldered into the computer and are fixed at 8GB. And while the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina comes with a solid-state drive (SSD), its capacity cannot be changed after purchase. With the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina, those limitations were worthwhile trade-offs, as the machine’s performance, screen and overall usability simply tower over anything else on the market. With the 13-inch MacBook Pro
with Retina, the situation is more complicated. The Rub: Price First, there’s the price. For the base model, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina is $1,699. That gets you a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 chip, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. For $1,999, users can upgrade to a 256GB hard drive. Other configurations with more storage space or a faster processor are also available. Make no mistake –- $1,700 for a 13-inch laptop is expensive. Very expensive. Comparatively, the 15inch MacBook Pro with Retina is a bargain. It starts at $2,199 but includes a quad-core Intel Core i7 chip, discrete graphics and has a base 256GB SSD. The fact that there’s only a $200 difference between a 256GB SSD-equipped 13-inch and the base model with a 15-inch display is problematic because for that $200, you simply get

TORONTO - Research In Motion Ltd on Thursday outlined a program of incentives to encourage its biggest customers to run its soon-to-launch line of BlackBerry 10 devices, seeking to persuade corporations and government users to stick with its secure smartphones. RIM is betting that the devices, to be launched on January 30, will revive its fortunes. That will depend to a large extent on the response from RIM’s enterprise customers -- the business users who value BlackBerry’s strong security features. Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM, once a smartphone pioneer, has bled market share to Apple Inc’s iPhone and devices powered by Google’s market-leading Android operating system, even among the business customers who once used BlackBerry exclusively. RIM says its new devices will be faster and smoother than previous BlackBerry phones and
will have a large catalog of apps, which are crucial to the success of any new line of smartphones. Many local officials commit corruption,” said a professor of the Faculty of Law, Udayana University, Prof. IK Rai Setiabudhi, when speaking in the Year End Seminar of the Bali House with the theme ‘Corruption Is a Crime that Must Be Eradicated’ taking place at the Wantilan Hall of Bali House on Sunday (Dec 9). According to the former Dean of the Law Faculty of the Udayana University, this condition should become a collective concern because some cases had stipulated the suspect up to sending them to jail. Based on the latest data of corruption index, Bali actually occupied the fifth most corrupt regions in Indonesia. “It is a serious problem. We have to motivate the Anticorruption NGOs and wider
community to control it so that it will not get worse in the future,” said Setiabudhi. Similar opinion was revealed by Chairman of Bali Corruption Watch (BCW), Putu Wirata Dwikora. He also put particular emphasis on corruption cases in Bali that had been revealed to imprison the perpetrators. At the same time, some indications of corruption were still shelved so far. “Many indications of corruption in the regency and municipality in Bali are not followed up by the law enforcement officials. This must be our common concern,” said Dwikora. He also encouraged the officials to reveal the cases more seriously without discrimination. “If we want to be free from corruption, the existing cases must be investigated thoroughly. Do not be left unresolved,” said Dwikora.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Bali House, AA Ngurah Oka Ratmadi, who appeared as a keynote speaker in the seminar, emphasized that corruption was an extraordinary crime. That was why corruption should be eradicated. “Some headmen, subdistrict heads, regents up to ministers have now even become a suspect. It’s what happening in this republic, and I am very sad to hear that,” he said. Seeing numerous cases of corruption from the central to regional government, it was not mistaken if Indonesia was ranked as one of the most corrupt countries. “Are we not ashamed of it? According to Sutrisna, the bylaw also predetermined the temple anniversary (piodalan) held with the togetherness of residents. Based on the convention (prarem) stipulated, within the period of three years it was held five times small-scale anniversary, while in the same period was held once grandiose anniversary. For the ceremony in the Segara Temple, the residents in charge to prepare everything had been determined. They were taken from the five customary hamlets consisting of the Kampung Baru, Kampung Anyar, Kaliuntu, Bali and Banjar Jawa. Meanwhile, the temple priest officiating over the ceremony was taken from the Buleleng customary village. “The small-scale temple anniversary is held on ulian Bali or five days before Galungan. Other than worship on the temple anniversary, the worship is also carried out by residents that have just completed burial procession followed by nganyut ritual,” he explained. He added that to maintain the sanitation in the temple environment, a cleanup service was regularly organized before the temple anniversary and a cleanup service
done by specified groups. Aside from doing maintenance, the group also often organized psalmodic activities in the temple. In addition, the Buleleng customary village also hired an attendant to oversee the temple area. “Due to the support of residents and government assistance, the historical legacy we receive is still sustainable to venerate the Lord Vishnu abiding in the temple,” he said. On the other hand, Sutrisna said that because of the old age and location within the area of Buleleng Harbor attraction, the temple was frequently visited by foreign tourists. In response to this matter, his party did not too question about the temple sanctity because the entrance into the temple had been arranged in a regulation. Temple attendant would recommend visitors to wear scarves and not allow entering for those in temporary impure condition (due to family’s death or menstruation). “Every day, there are some tourists visiting the temple and we have got the rules to follow. Parking problem does not only happen to Sanglah Hospital. Similar crowdedness also happens to car and motorcycle parking in Wangaya Hospital. This makes the public service in the hospital belonging to Denpasar Municipality slightly disturbed. To resolve the parking problem, the authority of Wangaya Hospital then changed the parking pattern effective on Monday (Dec 10). When contacted by phone, Deputy Director of General Administration of Wangaya Hospital, I Made Maja, explained the change lay in the arrangement of exit for cars and motorcycle parking. Parking space for motorcycle of visitors and outpatients was in front of the parking area or close to policlinic. Starting on Monday, according to Maja, the parking space of motorcycle was moved to rear parking area. “For hospital employees, we provide parking space in the back, exactly in tennis court,” said Maja when contacted on Sunday (Dec 10). Front land usually filled with motorcycles would be used for car parking space of visitors, patients and doctors in charge of the policlinic. In terms of capacity, according to Maja, the rear parking space could accommodate at least 200 motorcycles, while front parking lot could accommodate 37 cars. “So, if the front parking lot is fully occupied, the other cars will be transferred to rear parking lot. There, we also provide parking space for cars,” said Maja.
For the exit of parking area usually located in the front, precisely near the temple, was transferred to rear parking area. “The exit is near the Praja in the rear parking area,” said Maja. For patients, added Maja, the entrance of Emergency Room was the same as public visitors and out-patients. The difference, for patients of Emergency Room referred to Sanglah Hospital was provided with special exit. “The exit prepared in front parking area is specifically intended for referred patients of Emergency Room. Meanwhile, patients of Emergency Room requiring no referral and allowed to go home, remain to go out from back exit,” said Maja. In succeeding the change of parking pattern, added Maja, it was required the cooperation of all parties concerned such as the PD Parkir and internship students in Wangaya Hospital. The presence of parking attendant in the rear parking area was expected to make the service users easier to go out of the hospital. “Therefore, it can make easier both the entry and exit,” he added. To further expedite and provide wider parking lot, the Wangaya Hospital hoped that internship students in Wangaya Hospital could be provided with shuttle service by their school. It was recommended because the number of internship students in Wangaya Hospital was almost equal to number to hospital employees so that they required spacious parking area. Just a few months after completion, the revetment project of Yeh Embang River has broken down. According to information, the revetment along approximately 20 meters collapsed five days ago. A local resident met on Sunday (Dec 9) said the overflowing river water was not too high at that time. A number of residents of Yeh Embang Kauh village, Mendoyo, questioned about the quality of the river revetment project. According to the resident met it was the second collapse for the revetment. Previously, local residents had protested because the craftsmanship was assessed careless. I Made Pasar questioned about the cement and sand mixture used to glue the revetment but according to project executor it had been appropriate with standards. In fact, approximately 20 meters of the revetment was broken down on the left bank. Besides, partial collapse also occurred on the left bank, precisely under the road of Sekar Kejule hamlet, Yeh Embang Kauh village.
One of the residents, I Nyoman Oka, 25, when met admitted the collapsed revetment happened five days ago. He did not know exactly what caused the collapse of the revetment that had just been completed whereas the river water overflowed as usual after heavy rains. Allegedly, quality of the river revetment was inferior so that it was easily broken down. Hamlet Chief of Sekar Kejule, I Putu Astra Semadi, justified the collapse of river revetment that had just been accomplished. As a hamlet authority, Astra Semadi claimed to have reported the incident to provincial authority. Residents hoped the revetment could be repaired because the project
was just completed and still under maintenance. On the other hand, when contacted by journalist, the Technical Director of Bali Penida River Agency, Nengah Riasa, justified the collapse of revetment at Yeh Embang River. The damage would be soon repaired, but was still waiting for good weather. According to Riasa, the revetment collapse was caused by the peak flooding that overtopped the revetment. Flooding water eroded the material piles behind the revetment. On that account, nothing could shore up the revetment. Charity effort supports aspiring artist IBP
I Wayan Lias is a young and very talented artist from Cegi where the Bali Dynasty Resort supported the charity project back in 2000 - As Lias grew up he wanted to continue his education at the Fine Art Faculty at the University UNDIKSHA in Singaraja, for a degree in Fine Arts and the Bali Dynasty Resort Charity effort now support him in his further education. Lias is one of the students who stands out amongst other young artists and is an excellent painter. At his home in Cegi he works in a little studio which he built himself and shares his experience and expertise with other villagers interested in Art. A selection of Lias’ art is available for sale at the resort and 50% of the money raised will directly go to supporting his education.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — James Bond is in a box-office photo finish with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny over what looks to be the last slow weekend of the holidays. According to studio estimates Sunday, Sony’s Bond tale “Skyfall” took in $11 million to move back to No. 1 in its fifth weekend. That put it narrowly ahead of Paramount’s “Rise of the Guardians,” the animated adventure of Santa, the Easter Bunny and other mythological heroes that pulled in $10.5 million. The two movies inched ahead of Summit Entertainment’s “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2,” which had been tops for three-straight weekends. The “Twilight” finale earned $9.2 million, slipping into a tight race for No. 3 with Disney’s “Lincoln,” which was close behind with $9.1 million. The top movies were bunched up so closely that rankings could change once final weekend revenues are released Monday. The weekend’s only new wide release, Gerard Butler’s romantic comedy “Playing for Keeps,” flopped with just $6 mil-
lion, coming in at No. 6. “Skyfall” raised its domestic total to $261.6 million and added $20.3 million overseas to bring its international income to $656.6 million. At $918 million worldwide, “Skyfall” has the best cash haul ever for the Bond franchise and surpassed “Spider-Man 3” at $890 million to become Sony’s top-grossing hit. The “Twilight” finale also is a franchise record-breaker, surpassing the $710 million worldwide haul of last year’s “Breaking Dawn — Part 1.” The finale’s domestic total now stands at $268.7 million. “Rise of the Guardians” led the international box office with $26 million, followed by 20th Century Fox’s “Life of Pi” at $23.8 million. It was another traditionally quiet post-Thanksgiving weekend, with big November releases continuing to
dominate in the lull before a pre-Christmas onslaught of movies. The box office is expected to soar next weekend with the arrival of part one of “The Hobbit,” Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” prelude. The actors met over dinner with their wives and immediately hit it off - and Matt raved to Access about John’s talent. “He’s brilliant on [‘The Office’] and I love that show -- everybody loves that show -- but the breadth and scope of the guy’s talent is pretty vast,” he said of John. “And in talking to him, that becomes clear

So, instantly I just started looking for stuff we could do together and then he came to me with this story, and so we just started writing.” Writing with John was so easy that it reminded Matt of writing with his longtime friend and “Good Will Hunting” co-writer, Ben Affleck. “It was eerily similar [to writing with Ben], actually,” he said of writing the film’s script at his home, with his four daughters around. “I laughed a lot [with John], which I did with Ben too. I had a lot of laughs. I mean, my wife said to me in the middle of the process, she said that she hadn’t seen me that happy ever!” Adding, “The kids were running in and out of the room and [my wife] was watching John and I write and [saw] how much fun I was having and she said, ‘This has been a great reminder to you how much you love writing.’” See Matt and John in “Promised Land” - in theaters on January 4.
DENPASAR - Ranked first in the HIV/AIDS case in Bali has become a challenge for Denpasar to continuously find out other HIV/AIDS cases indeed becoming like an iceberg phenomenon and prevent new infections. On that account, Denpasar planned for zero new HIV case, zero discrimination for people living with HIV/AIDS and zero death of HIV/AIDS in 2015. Of the HIV/AIDS cases reaching over 6,200 in Bali, according to the Head of Denpasar Health Agency, Ni Luh Putu Sri Armini, Denpasar took the portion over 40 percent. Approximately 35 percent of them belonged to productive age of 19-39 years old. In terms of HIV/AIDS incubation period reaching 5-10 years, some of the sufferers in the productive age were infected at school age. To that end, according to Armini, one of the measures taken in the prevention of HIV infection, the Denpasar Municipality held a HIV counseling at schools and established a Student Care for HIV/AIDS and Drugs (KSPAN) Cadre so that the information about HIV could reach children at school age. “We invite all the components so that the knowledge and information about HIV can be known to the community in its entirety,” said Armini. Other than the KSPAN, Denpasar also augmented the Village Cadre Caring for HIV/AIDS and Drugs whose number currently reached 600s. According to Armini, the cadres were expected to be able to provide information about HIV broadly and comprehensively. “Hopefully, the information disseminated can work like a multi level marketing. So, it comes down and expands until reaching the entire community,” she added. Continued on page 6
