Rolling Stones rock Brooklyn at anniversary gig

NEW YORK — It sure didn’t feel like a farewell. The Rolling Stones — average age 68-plus, if you’re counting — were in rollicking form as they rocked the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for 2½ hours Saturday night, their first U.S. show on a mini-tour marking a mind-boggling 50 years as a rock band. And although every time the Stones tour, the inevitable questions arise, — whether it’s “The Last Time,” to quote one of their songs — there was no sign that anything is ending anytime soon. “People say, why do you keep doing this?” mused 69year-old Mick Jagger, the band’s impossibly energetic frontman, before launching into “Brown Sugar.” ‘’Why do you keep touring, coming back? The answer is, you’re the reason we’re doing this. Thank you for buying our records and coming to our shows for the last 50 years.” Jagger was in fine form, with strong vocals and his usual swagger — strutting, jogging, skipping and pumping his arms like a man half his age. And though he briefly donned a flamboyant feathered black cape for “Sympathy for the Devil” and later, some red-
sequined tails, he was mostly content to prowl the stage in a tight black T-shirt and trousers. The band’s guitarists, the brilliant Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, alternated searing solos and occasionally ventured onto a stage extension that brought them closer to the crowd. The now-gray Richards, wearing a red bandana, exuded the easy familiarity of a favorite uncle: “While we wait for Ronnie,” he said at one point, “I’ll wish you happy holidays.” Watts, the dapper drummer in a simple black Tshirt, smiled frequently at his band mates. The grizzled quartet was joined on “Gimme Shelter” by Mary J. Blige, who traded vocals with Jagger and earned a huge cheer at the end. Also visiting: the Texas blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr. The sense of nostalgia was
heightened by projections on a huge screen of footage of the early days, when the Stones looked like teenagers. At one point, Jagger reminisced about the first time the band played New York — in 1964. A carton of milk cost only a quarter then, he said. And a ticket to the Rolling Stones? “I don’t want to go there,” he quipped. It was a reference to the sky-high prices at the current “50 and Counting” shows, where even the “cheap” seats cost a few hundred dollars and a prime seat cost in the $700 range or higher. From the opening number, “Get Off Of My Cloud,” the band played a generous 23 songs, including two new ones — “Doom and Gloom” and “One More Shot” — but mostly old favorites. The rousing encore included “Jumping Jack Flash,” of course, but the final song was “Satisfaction.”
And though the song speaks of not getting any, the consensus of the packed 18,000-seat arena was that it was a satisfying evening indeed. “If you like the Stones, this was as good a show as you could have had,” said one fan, Robert Nehring, 58, of Westfield, N.J., who’d paid $500 for his seat. “It was worth it,” he said simply. The Brooklyn show was a coup for the new Barclays Center — there are no Manhattan shows. It followed two rapturously received Stones shows in London late last month. The band also will play two shows in Newark, N.J., on Dec. 13 and 15. And just before that, the Stones will join a veritable who’s who of British rock royalty and U.S. superstars at the blockbuster 12-12-12 Superstorm Sandy benefit concert at Madison Square Garden. Also scheduled to perform: Paul McCartney, the Who, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Eddie Vedder, Billy Joel, Roger Waters and Chris Martin.
Lupus forces singer Toni Braxton into LA hospital Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES — Singer Toni Braxton has been hospitalized in Los Angeles. The R&B performer says in a Tweet on Friday that she’s been hospitalized because of “minor health issues” related to Lupus. A spokeswoman confirmed the hospitalization but had no other details. “But no worries!,” Braxton wrote to fans. “I will be out any day now.” The 45-year-old singer of “Unbreak My Heart” revealed two years ago she has Lupus, a potentially deadly autoimmune disease that killed Braxton’s uncle. She also suffers from a narrowing of the blood vessels in her heart. Braxton said in a recent “20/20” interview that doctors told her the Lupus diagnosis meant her performing career would likely be diminished and the disease helped push her into a recent bankruptcy.

DENPASAR - High and stable economic growth of Bali in the range of 6.5 percent has not been enjoyed by lower class community. The economic achievement of Bali is only enjoyed by upper classes, so that the growth achieved remains vague. It was revealed by a banking and SMEs observer, Viraguna Bagoes Oka, in Denpasar. The economic growth of Bali did not increase the income of communities, create new job opportunity and reduce poverty. “The high economic growth of Bali and even surpasses the current national economic growth is not followed by a collective economic stability, so that the fixed income of middle-to-lower community is continuously eroded by the rise in prices,” he said. He said the unemployment rate in Bali remained quite high. Of the total population approaching 4 million, the labor force amounted to 2.8 million (August 2012) where 2 million people had been working so that the amount of job seekers was 120,145 people. Meanwhile, the number of poor people in Bali reached 215,800 people (August 2012), or about 5.3 percent of the total population of Bali. More poor people lived in the city namely reaching 112,300 people, while at village reached 103,500 people. “The challenge faced by Bali
leader in the future is decreasing the unemployment rate and the poor household rate,” he said. According to him, the economic prospect of Bali in 2013 and in the future would largely depend on the vision and mission of comprehensive Bali development. It was by considering the limited carrying capacity of Bali, density of economic activity and occupation that was only concentrated in Southern Bali. “In the long term, the holistic and divinely inspired Bali needs to be preserved and prepared with the concept of expansion, not development, namely expansion pattern including a comprehensive process,” he said. He said that systemic or holistic approach actually had existed in the Balinese cultural heritage, namely the Tri Hita Karana (three sources of happiness) concept. With such role, power and wisdom, then a leader of Bali would have a strong, credible and reliable bargaining power because they were supported by all the people of Bali in escorting Bali. Since the scarcity of diesel fuel, dozens of farmers in Jembrana complained because they could not plow their rice fields as the hand tractor in use did not contain diesel fuel. Due to such condition, farmers were forced to postpone their planting season. The engine of hand tractor used to plow their fields could not work optimally because farmers had difficulty to get diesel fuel. One of the farmers of Subak Tegal Badeng, Putu Lastika, said on Saturday (Dec 8) the shortage of diesel fuel had an impact on the results of plowing as using hand tractor. By and large, they
spent 15 liters of diesel fuel to plow more than 6 ares of farmland, but due to scarcity of diesel fuel they could only plow less than 4 ares. Farmers expected the government could pay attention to their suffering and the diesel fuel supply could turn normal again. “Now, it is difficult for us to get diesel fuel, I’ve got back and forth to petrol station. We cannot get it at noon, but just get it at night,” said Lastika. Farmers, especially tractor owners, he admitted, would raise the rental rate of their tractor from IDR 12,000 per are if the diesel fuel shortage continued to occur. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

JERUSALEM — Jews around the world ushered in the eight-day Hanukkah festival Saturday evening, lighting the first candles of ceremonial lamps that symbolize triumph over oppression. In Israel, families gathered after sundown for the lighting, eating traditional snacks of potato pancakes and doughnuts and exchanging gifts. Local officials lit candles set up in public places, while families displayed the nine-candle lamps, called menorahs, in their windows or in special windproof glass boxes outside. Hanukkah, also known as the festival of lights, commemorates the Jewish uprising in the second century B.C. against the Greek-Syrian kingdom, which had tried to impose its culture on Jews and adorn the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem with statues of Greek gods. The holiday lasts eight days because according to tradition, when the Jews rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem, a single vial of oil, enough for one day, burned miraculously for eight. For many Jewish people, the holiday symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. Observant Jews light a candle each night to mark the holiday. Oily foods are eaten to commemorate the oil miracle, hence the ubiquitous
fried doughnuts and potato pancakes, known as latkes. In Israel, children play with four-sided spinning tops, or dreidels, decorated with the letters that form the acronym “A great miracle happened here.” Outside of Israel, the saying is “A great miracle happened there.” Israeli students get time off from school for the holiday, when families gather each night to light the candles, eat and exchange gifts. Hanukkah — which means dedication — is one of the most popular holidays in Israel, and has a high rate of observance. In Ohio, the first public candle lighting on Saturday was done by Holocaust survivor Abe Weinrib, who turns 100 on Tuesday. Weinrib, who lit the first candle on a 13-foot public menorah at Easton Town Center in Columbus, says his biggest triumph was surviving the Holocaust, the Nazi campaign to eliminate Jews in Europe.

Government should set up investment zone IBP
KUTA - Bali is currently attracting many investors, both domestic and abroad. Unfortunately until now, the investors who got into Bali only aimed on tourism sector. While creative economy industry and agriculture have not been much considered. According to the Chairman of the Employers ‘ Association of Indonesia (Apindo) Bali, Panudiana Kuhn, Sunday (9/12), government should immediately make clear rules about investments. Don’t let investors flock to Bali only to fill up tourism sector, such as hotels, restaurants, spa, and gift shops. He argued this would not give positive impact for economic growth. “In 2013, Bali’s economic growth will be above national economic growth. However, it should be noted that the government have to be careful and not letting investor to invest on tourism sector only,” said Kuhn, who is a successful garment businessman. He mentioned the potential of Bali as an investment destination is still considerable. To that end, he hoped the government could chart the investment zones so that investors can obtain legal certainty and easier on installing their capital in Bali. “Investment zone must be clearly mapped, e.g. zone for hotels, garment factories, fish canning, and other types of businesses, so investment in Bali not violating spatial law,” he explained. Kuhn, who has recently been awarded the 2012 Primaniyarta from
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for his company, PT. Dianatina Ayu, said Bali was still weak in the field of infrastructure and permitting. In the field of infrastructure, he assesses, there are still much needs to be repaired and rebuilt. For example, highway infrastructure, which links Denpasar-Gilimanuk, is still inadequate. Meanwhile the highway was very essential for the distribution of products from Bali to Java and other way around. As a result, when an accident happened, the highway jammed and hampers the distribution of the product giving rise to additional costs for employers. Still in a matter of highway infrastructure, the government’s steps to provide equitable economy in Southern Bali and Northern Bali needs to be coupled with improved road from Denpasar-Gilimanuk and SingarajaKarangasem. “When the line towards the Northern Bali have been good, obviously tourists who will visit the region feel comfortable. Unlike today, many main street not very good conditions so that tourists were reluctant to travel to the Northern Bali and chose to explore the territory of Southern Bali, “said Kuhn. Last position of Antonio was known at Villa Puri Puri Kecil on Jalan Basangkasa, Legian. At approximately 2:00 a.m. local time, the joint forces raided the villa occupied by Antonino. He was arrested without resistance. In fact, Antonio had been living in Bali from since six months ago. Finally, he was known to stay at the villa. The villa was mostly occupied by guests coming from Italy. “We just helped capture the concerned. Regarding the case, we have no author-
ity to reveal,” added Putu Sugiarta. Italian police officer Andrea Vitalone said in Bali that Vitale was wanted for involvement in various crimes, including murder, human trafficking and illegal arms trading. Plans are under way to take him back to Italy. Meanwhile, Yudi Sroja partly explained about the involvement of Antonio. He was a perpetrator of severe persecution that caused his victim to die. The case occurred in Italy. Even, his friend had been arrested in Bangkok. Regarding the entry of Antonio to Bali, his party would conduct an investigation because the visa held by Antonio was admittedly a little dubious. On that account, his party was still making coordination with immigration office in Denpasar. It was triggered by accident where a student drowned after being swept away by streams of Singsing Waterfall at Labuan Haji, Temukus village. The student on behalf of Wayan Suastawa, 17, a resident of Pujungan village, Pupuan subdistrict, Tabanan, drowned when helping a schoolmate who jumped into the pool of waterfall on Saturday (Dec 8). When contacted, Chief of Banjar Police, Nyoman Supardi, with permission from Chief of Buleleng Police, Widodo Rahino, confirmed the report regarding the drowned student. He said before the incident the victim with a number of schoolmates filled in the camping activity with an outbound near the

JOHANNESBURG — South Africans prayed Sunday for the health of former President Nelson Mandela and anxiously awaited further word about the anti-apartheid leader after he was admitted to a military hospital. On Sunday morning, worshipers gathered at the Regina Mundi Catholic church in the Soweto area of Johannesburg to pray for the frail 94-year-old icon. The church was a center of anti-apartheid protests and funerals. “Yes, it really worries us because he is a great person,” church goer Shainet Mnkomo said as she left an early morning service. “He did so many things to the country, he’s one of those persons who we remember most.” Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison for fighting racist white rule, became South Africa’s first black president in 1994 and served one five-year term. He later retired from public life to live in his remote village of Qunu, in the Eastern Cape area, and last made a public appearance when his country hosted the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament. Many in this country of 50 million people view Mandela, who led the African National Congress into power, as a father figure and an icon of integrity and magnanimity amid the nation’s increasingly messy politics. At one central London outlet activists from the anti-austerity UK Uncut movement staged a sit-in, chanting “Starbucks pay your taxes” and briefly setting up a children’s crèche before police moved them on. Protests were held at more than 40 of the multinational’s cafes, including in Liverpool, Birmingham and Cardiff, UK Uncut said. The demonstrations were held two days after Starbucks said it would pay around 20 million pounds ($32 million) in British corporation tax over the next two years. Its announcement came after weeks of criticism in the media and parliament following a Reuters report which said Starbucks had paid no corporation tax in Britain over the past three years while telling investors the local business was highly profitable. Starbucks’ tax offer was just a “massive PR stunt”, said Rosie Rogers, a 26year-old UK Uncut activist, outside one of the chain’s London restaurants. “If Starbucks, if all the tax avoiders, paid their fair share, 25 billion pounds could be put back into public services and enrich our economy,” she said. Among the Hindus, he is considered demihuman and demigod. The role of Lord Ganesha is so important because he is the son of Lord Shiva. Hindu society believes that Lord Ganesha is the god of knowledge. Hopefully, the children born will be smart and dutiful to parents. As the god of knowledge, Ganesha always invites the admiration of iconographic experts (knowledge of the art of ancient statues) because of the shape and style of the art are different. However, in principle the feature of Ganesha statue remains the same, namely having a trunk sucking the contents of bowl in his hand grip. According to Hindu mythology, the bowl contains fluid of inexhaustible knowledge despite constantly being sucked by him. Then, it is identified with an inexhaustible knowledge despite being explored and worked on all the times. Perhaps, such a condition is expected by human. Due to high popularity of Ganesha, he is also worshiped as the god of remover of the obstacles, both supernatural (magic) and physical obstacles. Ganesha is worshiped because he has a best friend, namely little mouse. The mouse is then made his vehicle. Therefore, in the iconography Ganesha always mounts a mouse (musaka). Musaka symbolizes the self-conceit. On that account, Ganesha is expected to act as controller against the one’s arrogance. People often interpret that mouse has the characteristic in accordance with that of Ganesha. Mouse can get past all the obstacles in any location such as at homes, rice fields and ditches. Similarly, the characteristic expected from Ganesha is that people have great power like an elephant to break all the trees in the forest strongly while trees are analogized to big problems faced by humans.

the BPPD included nine members namely 4 representatives of industry association, 2 representatives of professional associations, 1 flight representative and 2 experts. “Bali must act faster in promoting Bali tourism. Bali serves as the Indonesia’s tourism entrance. As a partner of local government, in the future the BPPD plays an important role in increasing the tourist visits to Bali,” he said. He said that provincial government of Bali should not consider the BPPD establishment complicated. The presence of BPPD was independent and helping the government. Therefore, the Bali government should immediately boost the BPPD establishment. Bali would be left behind otherwise immediately es-

Officials said Sunday that four people have died in Croatia and one in Serbia as a result of blizzards in the region of southwestern Europe over the weekend, closing airports and roads, and blocking public transportation in big cities. People traveling in vehicles waited for four hours on the main Serbian highway leading from Belgrade to the Hungarian border before rescue teams freed them from 50 centimeters (20 inches) of snow that had fallen in a few hours. The airport in Zagreb, Croatia, was closed for several hours on Saturday, and several of the nation’s roads were closed because of high winds and heavy snow. Blizzards also hit Slovenia and Bosnia.

ROME - Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti announced on Saturday that he would resign once the 2013 budget is approved, potentially bringing forward an election due early next year and fuelling speculation that he might run. The surprise announcement came two days after Silvio Berlusconi’s party withdrew parliamentary support for the technocrat government and hours after Berlusconi said he would run to become premier for a fifth time on a platform that attacks Monti’s stewardship of the economy. Parliament is already poised to pass the budget by Christmas, and so Monti’s resignation probably brings the expected vote forward by no more than a month to February. Elections must follow no more than 70 days after President Giorgio Napolitano dissolves parliament. Monti’s move turns the tables on Berlusconi, who seemed to have once again seized a political opportunity to keep his party in the political game just a year after being forced to resign amid a sex scandal and a debt crisis. CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is heading back to Cuba on Sunday for more surgery for cancer, announcing on television that the illness has returned after two previous operations, chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Chavez acknowledged the seriousness of his situation in an address Saturday night, saying for the first time that if he suffers complications Vice President Nicolas Maduro should take his place as Venezuela’s leader and continue his socialist movement. “There are risks. Who can deny it?” Chavez said, seated at the presidential palace beside Maduro and other aides. “In any circumstance, we should guarantee the advance of the Bolivarian Revolution,” Chavez said. Outside medical experts said that based on Chavez’s account of his condition, he is facing a very difficult fight against an aggressive type of cancer. The president, who just returned from Cuba early Friday, said tests had found a return of “some malignant cells” in the same area where tumors were previously removed. Chavez, who has yet to be sworn in for his new term after winning reelection on Oct. 7, said he would return to Havana on Sunday and would undergo the operation in the coming days. Chavez’s quick trip home appeared aimed at sending a clear directive to his inner circle that Maduro is his chosen successor. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s first minister to be named a suspect in a bribery scandal resigned on Friday, becoming the highest profile victim of an increasingly aggressive push by the country’s anti-graft body to take on rampant institutional corruption. It is another blow to the reputation of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, elected to combat graft, and to his Democrat Party which faces an uphill struggle to hold on to power in elections in 2014. The case, say analysts, also further damages the president’s hopes of picking his own successor when his second and final term ends in 2014. “Too little time remains for the party to rebuild its credibility before elections. At the party’s current rate of decline, it may prove unable to nominate a presidential ticket in 2014,” said Kevin O’Rourke, an independent risk analyst. Youth and Sports Minister Andi Alfian Mallarangeng, a former close aide to the president and a senior member of the Democrat Party, is the first minister to be named a corruption suspect. He joins the bulging ranks of current and former officials to find themselves the target of probes by the anti-corruption agency as it tries to tackle what many see as one of the

Nine mega events set to promote Indonesian tourism Antara
JAKARTA - Nine events have been set to promote Indonesian tourism in 2013, both at home and abroad, according to deputy minister for Tourism and Creative Economy Sapta Nirwandar. “We have prepared nine mega events to promote Indonesian tourism next year,” Nirwandar said here on Saturday. He noted that of those events, three will be conducted abroad, and one of these events will focus on Indonesia being a “country partner” during the world’s largest tourism exchange in Berlin, Germany from March 6-10, 2013. “Two other events to be conducted abroad are Cruise Shipping Miami in the United States in March 2013 and International Meeting Exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany, in May, 2013,” he noted. While the six tourism events at home will include Musi Triboatton II in Palembang, South Sumatra, in November 2013; Semarang Marathon in Central Java in June 2013; Pilgrim Tourism in Surabaya, East Java, in June 2013; Tour de Singkarak V in West Sumatra in June; Sabang International Regatta II in Sabang, Aceh, in September 2013; and Festival Timoresia II in Ambon, Maluku in October 2013. Nirwandar said funding for these nine events will be provided by Marketing Directorate General of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. The cost is expected to be some Rp 607,700 billion for tourism promotion programs, improvement of Indonesia’s image, and market and information development on Indonesia. The state budget has allocated Rp2,052 trillion for the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy in 2013.

When mentioning Celuk hamlet, our mind will surely point to a silver and gold art craft. Celuk hamlet located adjacent to cultural village of Batubulan, Sukawati subdistrict, Gianyar, or about 6 km east of Denpasar, is the center of silver and gold handicrafts. In the 1980s, it was known as a tourism village because of its silver handicraft. Every day many tourists visited Celuk. The village is very typical because people can find out a row of art shops along the road which are all displaying and selling various kinds of silver products. Those silver crafts are on display and sold in glass showcase, so that every traveler passing by can see them. Diverse forms of craft such as rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, brooch and pendant can be found here. Similarly, there are also kitchen utensils such as spoons, forks, plates, cups, glasses, bowls (commonly used by Hindus to hold the offerings) and others. Silver handicraft embellished with various ornaments consists of dagger, fans and miniature of transportation means (wagon, tricycles, motorcycles, cars, boats, etc.). More interestingly, when shopping at Celuk art shops, we are also allowed by the art shop owner to have a closer look at the process of making various silverworks. In general, the process of making of silver products passes through two processes, namely the traditional and modern techniques. However, there are also made by
combining traditional and modern technique. From the narrative of some locals, Celuk was starting to be known as a silversmith area since 1976. Initially, there were only 3 silversmiths. After the development of tourism, the emerging new silver craftsmen followed the steps of the three craftsmen. The market is located on the highway adjacent to the Open Stage of Putra Barong Celuk. Regent of Gianyar, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati inaugurated the market on Wednesday (Nov 28) and was attended by hamlet officials and senior figure of Gianyar Palace, AAG Agung Bharata. Chairman of the committee doubling as chief of Celuk customary hamlet, Kadek Marjana, said the development of the silver and gold art market was a joint initiative of local residents of Celuk hamlet mostly consisting of silver and gold craftsmen. By bringing together the craftsmen through a collective market under the management of customary hamlet, it was expected to kindle the creativity of product design, product quality silver equation, and to increase the confidence of foreign tourists in the silver products yielded by local craftsmen.

BERLIN - Referee Wolfgang Stark apologised on Saturday for awarding a controversial penalty against Borussia Dortmund and sending off defender Marcel Schmelzer in their Bundesliga defeat at home to VfL Wolfsburg. “I’ve looked at it again later and unfortunately it was an error of perception on my part,” he told reporters outside his dressing room. “I’m sorry, that should not happen. “The penalty and the red card were a mistake on my part. That’s annoying.” Schmelzer was judged to have handled the ball to stop Bas Dost’s goal-bound shot going into the net but replays showed that ball hit Schmelzer’s knee and, although it also brushed his fist, the contact was insignificant and clearly unintentional. A penalty was awarded, Schmelzer sent off and Diego converted the penalty. As so often happens, the decision completely changed the course of the game as Wolfsburg, losing 1-0 and completely outplayed before the incident, went on to win 3-2. Dortmund became the latest victim of soccer’s so-called triple punishment - when a player who denies the opposition a clear scoring opportunity concedes a penalty, is shown the red card and then has to serve an automatic suspension. Widespread criticism of the measure turns to outright indignity when the decision which leads to the threefold sanction is shown to be wrong.

Saturday’s incident was also notable for the unsporting behaviour of the Wolfsburg players who protested en masse when the ball hit Schmelzer’s knee, provoking bad feeling between the two team benches. “The consequences were bizarre,” said Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp, who refused a handshake from opposite number LorenzGuenther Koestner at the end. “We were 1-0 ahead and Wolfsburg had no chance and then comes the gamewinning move. It was a brutal decision. The boys have to chop their hands off to avoid risking a handball,” he said A FIFA working group led by former Germany captain and coach Franz Beckenbauer, which has now been wound up, suggested replacing the red with a yellow card except in the case of dangerous tackles. The proposal was studied by soccer’s rule-making body, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in March, and was put on hold. Klopp said he could have put up with the penalty but the red card unsettled his team. “I had everything taken into account, including the penalty. LONDON - Some Chelsea fans are still upset at the choice of Rafael Benitez as interim manager but if owner Roman Abramovich’s surprise appointment was designed to bring Fernando Torres back to form, the plan appears to be working. Torres scored twice in the 3-1 Premier League victory at Sunderland on Saturday and began to resemble the world class striker the Londoners signed from Liverpool for 50 million pounds ($80.10 million) in January 2011. The Spaniard also grabbed two goals in the 6-1 Champions League mauling of Danish whipping boys Nordsjaelland on Wednesday. “I said before that if the team play well and create chances he will score goals,” Benitez told the club website (www.chelseafc.com) after the interim manager claimed his first Premier League win since replacing the sacked Roberto Di Matteo last month. “It’s fair to say we are watching a Torres with more confidence and belief,” said Benitez of the player who sparkled when the two men were together at Liverpool. Benitez signed Torres from Atletico Madrid in 2007 and his faith was fully justified as the player became the darling of the Liverpool fans, scoring 65 goals in 102 appearances. His subsequent move to Stamford Bridge has proved far less successful. Torres used to be second choice behind Didier Drogba. The Spaniard has been almost ever-present since the Ivorian left Chelsea after they won the Champions League in May but all too often this season he has looked like a striker in need of a reboot. Whatever they think of the appointment of Benitez, Chelsea supporters will probably forgive him if Torres can at long last start repaying his British record transfer fee and rekindle a season that started so well for the club under Di Matteo. BERLIN - Referee Wolfgang Stark apologised on Saturday for awarding a controversial penalty against Borussia Dortmund and sending off defender Marcel Schmelzer in their Bundesliga defeat at home to VfL Wolfsburg. “I’ve looked at it again later and unfortunately it was an error of perception on my part,” he told reporters outside his dressing room. “I’m sorry, that should not happen. “The penalty and the red card were a mistake on my part. That’s annoying.” Schmelzer was judged to have handled the ball to stop Bas Dost’s goal-bound shot going into the net but replays showed that ball hit Schmelzer’s knee and, although it also brushed his fist, the contact was insignificant and clearly unintentional. A penalty was awarded, Schmelzer sent off and Diego converted the penalty. As so often happens, the decision completely changed the course of the game as Wolfsburg, losing 1-0 and completely outplayed before the incident, went on to win 3-2. Dortmund became the latest victim of soccer’s so-called triple punishment - when a player who denies the opposition a clear scoring opportunity concedes a penalty, is shown the red card and then has to serve an automatic suspension. Widespread criticism of the measure turns to outright indignity when the decision which leads to the threefold sanction is shown to be wrong.

LONDON - Some Chelsea fans are still upset at the choice of Rafael Benitez as interim manager but if owner Roman Abramovich’s surprise appointment was designed to bring Fernando Torres back to form, the plan appears to be working. Torres scored twice in the 3-1 Premier League victory at Sunderland on Saturday and began to resemble the world class striker the Londoners signed from Liverpool for 50 million pounds ($80.10 million) in January 2011. The Spaniard also grabbed two goals in the 6-1 Champions League mauling of Danish whipping boys Nordsjaelland on Wednesday. “I said before that if the team play well and create chances he will score goals,” Benitez told the club website (www.chelseafc.com) after the interim manager claimed his first Premier League win since replacing the sacked Roberto Di Matteo last month. “It’s fair to say we are watching a Torres with more confidence and belief,” said Benitez of the player who sparkled when the two men were together at Liverpool. After going two months without scoring in the Premier League, a spell when a heavy-legged Torres often looked peripheral to what was going on around him, the Spain striker had a spring back in his step on Saturday. When mentioning Celuk hamlet, our mind will surely point to a silver and gold art craft. Celuk hamlet located adjacent to cultural village of Batubulan, Sukawati subdistrict, Gianyar, or about 6 km east of Denpasar, is the center of silver and gold handicrafts. In the 1980s, it was known as a tourism village because of its silver handicraft. Every day many tourists visited Celuk. The village is very typical because people can find out a row of art shops along the road which are all displaying and selling various kinds of silver products. Those silver crafts are on display and sold in glass showcase, so that every traveler passing by can see them. Diverse forms of craft such as rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, brooch and pendant can be found here. Similarly, there are also kitchen utensils such as spoons, forks, plates, cups, glasses, bowls (commonly used by Hindus to hold the offerings) and others. Silver handicraft embellished with various ornaments consists of dagger, fans and miniature of transportation means (wagon, tricycles, motorcycles, cars, boats, etc.). More interestingly, when shopping at Celuk art shops, we are also allowed by the art shop owner to have a closer look at the process of making various silverworks. In general, the process of making of silver products passes through two processes, namely the traditional and modern techniques. However, there are also made by
combining traditional and modern technique. From the narrative of some locals, Celuk was starting to be known as a silversmith area since 1976. Initially, there were only 3 silversmiths. After the development of tourism, the emerging new silver craftsmen followed the steps of the three craftsmen. The market is located on the highway adjacent to the Open Stage of Putra Barong Celuk. Regent of Gianyar, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati inaugurated the market on Wednesday (Nov 28) and was attended by hamlet officials and senior figure of Gianyar Palace, AAG Agung Bharata. Chairman of the committee doubling as chief of Celuk customary hamlet, Kadek Marjana, said the development of the silver and gold art market was a joint initiative of local residents of Celuk hamlet mostly consisting of silver and gold craftsmen. By bringing together the craftsmen through a collective market under the management of customary hamlet, it was expected to kindle the creativity of product design, product quality silver equation, and to increase the confidence of foreign tourists in the silver products yielded by local craftsmen.

BELGRADE, Serbia — Freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall have killed at least 5 people and caused travel chaos across the Balkans. Officials said Sunday that four people have died in Croatia and one in Serbia as a result of blizzards in the region of southwestern Europe over the weekend, closing airports and roads, and blocking public transportation in big cities. People traveling in vehicles waited for four hours on the main Serbian highway leading from Belgrade to the Hungarian border before rescue teams freed them from 50 centimeters (20 inches) of snow that had fallen in a few hours. The airport in Zagreb, Croatia, was closed for several hours on Saturday, and several of the nation’s roads were closed because of high winds and heavy snow. Blizzards also hit Slovenia and Bosnia.

ROME - Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti announced on Saturday that he would resign once the 2013 budget is approved, potentially bringing forward an election due early next year and fuelling speculation that he might run. The surprise announcement came two days after Silvio Berlusconi’s party withdrew parliamentary support for the technocrat government and hours after Berlusconi said he would run to become premier for a fifth time on a platform that attacks Monti’s stewardship of the economy. Parliament is already poised to pass the budget by Christmas, and so Monti’s resignation probably brings the expected vote forward by no more than a month to February. Elections must follow no more than 70 days after President Giorgio Napolitano dissolves parliament. Monti’s move turns the tables on Berlusconi, who seemed to have once again seized a political opportunity to keep his party in the political game just a year after being forced to resign amid a sex scandal and a debt crisis. lusconi could now be forced into an election earlier than he expected with his badly divided party trailing in opinion polls behind the centre-left and the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement of the comic Beppe Grillo. CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is heading back to Cuba on Sunday for more surgery for cancer, announcing on television that the illness has returned after two previous operations, chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Chavez acknowledged the seriousness of his situation in an address Saturday night, saying for the first time that if he suffers complications Vice President Nicolas Maduro should take his place as Venezuela’s leader and continue his socialist movement. “There are risks. Who can deny it?” Chavez said, seated at the presidential palace beside Maduro and other aides. “In any circumstance, we should guarantee the advance of the Bolivarian Revolution,” Chavez said. Outside medical experts said that based on Chavez’s account of his condition, he is facing a very difficult fight against an aggressive type of cancer. The president, who just returned from Cuba early Friday, said tests had found a return of “some malignant cells” in the same area where tumors were previously removed. Chavez, who has yet to be sworn in for his new term after winning reelection on Oct. 7, said he would return to Havana on Sunday and would undergo the operation in the coming days. Chavez’s quick trip home appeared aimed at sending a clear directive to his inner circle that Maduro is his chosen successor. JAKARTA - Nine events have been set to promote Indonesian tourism in 2013, both at home and abroad, according to deputy minister for Tourism and Creative Economy Sapta Nirwandar. “We have prepared nine mega events to promote Indonesian tourism next year,” Nirwandar said here on Saturday. He noted that of those events, three will be conducted abroad, and one of these events will focus on Indonesia being a “country partner” during the world’s largest tourism exchange in Berlin, Germany from March 6-10, 2013. “Two other events to be conducted abroad are Cruise Shipping Miami in the United States in March 2013 and International Meeting Exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany, in May, 2013,” he noted. While the six tourism events at home will include Musi Triboatton II in Palembang, South Sumatra, in November 2013; Semarang Marathon in Central Java in June 2013; Pilgrim Tourism in Surabaya, East Java, in June 2013; Tour de Singkarak V in West Sumatra in June; Sabang International Regatta II in Sabang, Aceh, in September 2013; and Festival Timoresia II in Ambon, Maluku in October 2013. Nirwandar said funding for these nine events will be provided by Marketing Directorate General of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. The cost is expected to be some Rp 607,700 billion for tourism promotion programs, improvement of Indonesia’s image, and market and information development on Indonesia. The demonstrations were held two days after Starbucks said it would pay around 20 million pounds ($32 million) in British corporation tax over the next two years. Its announcement came after weeks of criticism in the media and parliament following a Reuters report which said Starbucks had paid no corporation tax in Britain over the past three years while telling investors the local business was highly profitable. Due to high popularity of Ganesha, he is also worshiped as the god of remover of the obstacles, both supernatural (magic) and physical obstacles. Ganesha is worshiped because he has a best friend, namely little mouse. The mouse is then made his vehicle. Therefore, in the iconography Ganesha always mounts a mouse (musaka). Musaka symbolizes the self-conceit. On that account, Ganesha is expected to act as controller against the one’s arrogance. People often interpret that mouse has the characteristic in accordance with that of Ganesha. Mouse can get past all the obstacles in any location such as at homes, rice fields and ditches. the BPPD included nine members namely 4 representatives of industry association, 2 representatives of professional associations, 1 flight representative and 2 experts. “Bali must act faster in promoting Bali tourism. Bali serves as the Indonesia’s tourism entrance. As a partner of local government, in the future the BPPD plays an important role in increasing the tourist visits to Bali,” he said. He said that provincial government of Bali should not consider the BPPD establishment complicated. The presence of BPPD was independent and helping the government. Therefore, the Bali government should immediately boost the BPPD establishment. Bali would be left behind otherwise immediately es-

It was triggered by accident where a student drowned after being swept away by streams of Singsing Waterfall at Labuan Haji, Temukus village. The student on behalf of Wayan Suastawa, 17, a resident of Pujungan village, Pupuan subdistrict, Tabanan, drowned when helping a schoolmate who jumped into the pool of waterfall on Saturday (Dec 8). When contacted, Chief of Banjar Police, Nyoman Supardi, with permission from Chief of Buleleng Police, Widodo Rahino, confirmed the report regarding the drowned student. He said before the incident the victim with a number of schoolmates filled in the camping activity with an outbound near the

JOHANNESBURG — South Africans prayed Sunday for the health of former President Nelson Mandela and anxiously awaited further word about the anti-apartheid leader after he was admitted to a military hospital. On Sunday morning, worshipers gathered at the Regina Mundi Catholic church in the Soweto area of Johannesburg to pray for the frail 94-year-old icon. The church was a center of anti-apartheid protests and funerals. “Yes, it really worries us because he is a great person,” church goer Shainet Mnkomo said as she left an early morning service. “He did so many things to the country, he’s one of those persons who we remember most.” Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison for fighting racist white rule, became South Africa’s first black president in 1994 and served one five-year term. He later retired from public life to live in his remote village of Qunu, in the Eastern Cape area, and last made a public appearance when his country hosted the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament. Many in this country of 50 million people view Mandela, who led the African National Congress into power, as a father figure and an icon of integrity and magnanimity amid the nation’s increasingly messy politics. Government should set up investment zone IBP
KUTA - Bali is currently attracting many investors, both domestic and abroad. Unfortunately until now, the investors who got into Bali only aimed on tourism sector. While creative economy industry and agriculture have not been much considered. According to the Chairman of the Employers ‘ Association of Indonesia (Apindo) Bali, Panudiana Kuhn, Sunday (9/12), government should immediately make clear rules about investments. Don’t let investors flock to Bali only to fill up tourism sector, such as hotels, restaurants, spa, and gift shops. He argued this would not give positive impact for economic growth. “In 2013, Bali’s economic growth will be above national economic growth. However, it should be noted that the government have to be careful and not letting investor to invest on tourism sector only,” said Kuhn, who is a successful garment businessman. He mentioned the potential of Bali as an investment destination is still considerable. To that end, he hoped the government could chart the investment zones so that investors can obtain legal certainty and easier on installing their capital in Bali. “Investment zone must be clearly mapped, e.g. zone for hotels, garment factories, fish canning, and other types of businesses, so investment in Bali not violating spatial law,” he explained. Kuhn, who has recently been awarded the 2012 Primaniyarta from
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for his company, PT. Dianatina Ayu, said Bali was still weak in the field of infrastructure and permitting. In the field of infrastructure, he assesses, there are still much needs to be repaired and rebuilt. For example, highway infrastructure, which links Denpasar-Gilimanuk, is still inadequate. Meanwhile the highway was very essential for the distribution of products from Bali to Java and other way around. As a result, when an accident happened, the highway jammed and hampers the distribution of the product giving rise to additional costs for employers. Still in a matter of highway infrastructure, the government’s steps to provide equitable economy in Southern Bali and Northern Bali needs to be coupled with improved road from Denpasar-Gilimanuk and SingarajaKarangasem. “When the line towards the Northern Bali have been good, obviously tourists who will visit the region feel comfortable. Last position of Antonio was known at Villa Puri Puri Kecil on Jalan Basangkasa, Legian. At approximately 2:00 a.m. local time, the joint forces raided the villa occupied by Antonino. He was arrested without resistance. In fact, Antonio had been living in Bali from since six months ago. Finally, he was known to stay at the villa. The villa was mostly occupied by guests coming from Italy. “We just helped capture the concerned. Regarding the case, we have no author-
ity to reveal,” added Putu Sugiarta. Italian police officer Andrea Vitalone said in Bali that Vitale was wanted for involvement in various crimes, including murder, human trafficking and illegal arms trading. Plans are under way to take him back to Italy. Meanwhile, Yudi Sroja partly explained about the involvement of Antonio. He was a perpetrator of severe persecution that caused his victim to die. The case occurred in Italy. Even, his friend had been arrested in Bangkok. Regarding the entry of Antonio to Bali, his party would conduct an investigation because the visa held by Antonio was admittedly a little dubious. On that account, his party was still making coordination with immigration office in Denpasar. Similarly, regarding the arrest of Antonio, his party would consult it to the authorities, whether he would be directly dispatched to Italy. “We do not know about the next step. Since the scarcity of diesel fuel, dozens of farmers in Jembrana complained because they could not plow their rice fields as the hand tractor in use did not contain diesel fuel. Due to such condition, farmers were forced to postpone their planting season. The engine of hand tractor used to plow their fields could not work optimally because farmers had difficulty to get diesel fuel. One of the farmers of Subak Tegal Badeng, Putu Lastika, said on Saturday (Dec 8) the shortage of diesel fuel had an impact on the results of plowing as using hand tractor. By and large, they
spent 15 liters of diesel fuel to plow more than 6 ares of farmland, but due to scarcity of diesel fuel they could only plow less than 4 ares. Farmers expected the government could pay attention to their suffering and the diesel fuel supply could turn normal again. “Now, it is difficult for us to get diesel fuel, I’ve got back and forth to petrol station. We cannot get it at noon, but just get it at night,” said Lastika. Farmers, especially tractor owners, he admitted, would raise the rental rate of their tractor from IDR 12,000 per are if the diesel fuel shortage continued to occur. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Rolling Stones rock Brooklyn at anniversary gig

NEW YORK — It sure didn’t feel like a farewell. The Rolling Stones — average age 68-plus, if you’re counting — were in rollicking form as they rocked the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for 2½ hours Saturday night, their first U.S. show on a mini-tour marking a mind-boggling 50 years as a rock band. And although every time the Stones tour, the inevitable questions arise, — whether it’s “The Last Time,” to quote one of their songs — there was no sign that anything is ending anytime soon. “People say, why do you keep doing this?” mused 69year-old Mick Jagger, the band’s impossibly energetic frontman, before launching into “Brown Sugar.” ‘’Why do you keep touring, coming back? The answer is, you’re the reason we’re doing this. Thank you for buying our records and coming to our shows for the last 50 years.” Jagger was in fine form, with strong vocals and his usual swagger — strutting, jogging, skipping and pumping his arms like a man half his age. And though he briefly donned a flamboyant feathered black cape for “Sympathy for the Devil” and later, some red-
sequined tails, he was mostly content to prowl the stage in a tight black T-shirt and trousers. The band’s guitarists, the brilliant Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, alternated searing solos and occasionally ventured onto a stage extension that brought them closer to the crowd. The now-gray Richards, wearing a red bandana, exuded the easy familiarity of a favorite uncle: “While we wait for Ronnie,” he said at one point, “I’ll wish you happy holidays.” Watts, the dapper drummer in a simple black Tshirt, smiled frequently at his band mates. The grizzled quartet was joined on “Gimme Shelter” by Mary J. Blige, who traded vocals with Jagger and earned a huge cheer at the end. Also visiting: the Texas blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr. The sense of nostalgia was
heightened by projections on a huge screen of footage of the early days, when the Stones looked like teenagers. At one point, Jagger reminisced about the first time the band played New York — in 1964. A carton of milk cost only a quarter then, he said. And a ticket to the Rolling Stones? “I don’t want to go there,” he quipped. It was a reference to the sky-high prices at the current “50 and Counting” shows, where even the “cheap” seats cost a few hundred dollars and a prime seat cost in the $700 range or higher. From the opening number, “Get Off Of My Cloud,” the band played a generous 23 songs, including two new ones — “Doom and Gloom” and “One More Shot” — but mostly old favorites. The rousing encore included “Jumping Jack Flash,” of course, but the final song was “Satisfaction.”
And though the song speaks of not getting any, the consensus of the packed 18,000-seat arena was that it was a satisfying evening indeed. “If you like the Stones, this was as good a show as you could have had,” said one fan, Robert Nehring, 58, of Westfield, N.J., who’d paid $500 for his seat. “It was worth it,” he said simply. The Brooklyn show was a coup for the new Barclays Center — there are no Manhattan shows. It followed two rapturously received Stones shows in London late last month. The band also will play two shows in Newark, N.J., on Dec. 13 and 15. And just before that, the Stones will join a veritable who’s who of British rock royalty and U.S. superstars at the blockbuster 12-12-12 Superstorm Sandy benefit concert at Madison Square Garden. Also scheduled to perform: Paul McCartney, the Who, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Eddie Vedder, Billy Joel, Roger Waters and Chris Martin.

LOS ANGELES — Singer Toni Braxton has been hospitalized in Los Angeles. The R&B performer says in a Tweet on Friday that she’s been hospitalized because of “minor health issues” related to Lupus. A spokeswoman confirmed the hospitalization but had no other details. “But no worries!,” Braxton wrote to fans. “I will be out any day now.” The 45-year-old singer of “Unbreak My Heart” revealed two years ago she has Lupus, a potentially deadly autoimmune disease that killed Braxton’s uncle. She also suffers from a narrowing of the blood vessels in her heart. Braxton said in a recent “20/20” interview that doctors told her the Lupus diagnosis meant her performing career would likely be diminished and the disease helped push her into a recent bankruptcy.

DENPASAR - High and stable economic growth of Bali in the range of 6.5 percent has not been enjoyed by lower class community. The economic achievement of Bali is only enjoyed by upper classes, so that the growth achieved remains vague. It was revealed by a banking and SMEs observer, Viraguna Bagoes Oka, in Denpasar. The economic growth of Bali did not increase the income of communities, create new job opportunity and reduce poverty. “The high economic growth of Bali and even surpasses the current national economic growth is not followed by a collective economic stability, so that the fixed income of middle-to-lower community is continuously eroded by the rise in prices,” he said. He said the unemployment rate in Bali remained quite high. Of the total population approaching 4 million, the labor force amounted to 2.8 million (August 2012) where 2 million people had been working so that the amount of job seekers was 120,145 people. Meanwhile, the number of poor people in Bali reached 215,800 people (August 2012), or about 5.3 percent of the total population of Bali. More poor people lived in the city namely reaching 112,300 people, while at village reached 103,500 people. “The challenge faced by Bali
leader in the future is decreasing the unemployment rate and the poor household rate,” he said. According to him, the economic prospect of Bali in 2013 and in the future would largely depend on the vision and mission of comprehensive Bali development. It was by considering the limited carrying capacity of Bali, density of economic activity and occupation that was only concentrated in Southern Bali. “In the long term, the holistic and divinely inspired Bali needs to be preserved and prepared with the concept of expansion, not development, namely expansion pattern including a comprehensive process,” he said. He said that systemic or holistic approach actually had existed in the Balinese cultural heritage, namely the Tri Hita Karana (three sources of happiness) concept. With such role, power and wisdom, then a leader of Bali would have a strong, credible and reliable bargaining power because they were supported by all the people of Bali in escorting Bali. The late Desak Gede Raka Nadha inspired many people. The great moment in her life is when she created two “monuments” in conserving Bali, they are Genta Bali FM and Koperasi Krama Bali (KKB). Both are considered as the everlasting monument of Bali.
