Save coral reefs, inaugurate diving site FISHERMEN at Penuktukan village, Tejakula subdistrict, are indeed praiseworthy in the efforts to rescue the coral reefs in the waters of the village. Various efforts made by fisherman to restore the damaged coral reefs since the 1970s have transformed them into beautiful undersea charms. As an impact, the sea of the village is now visited by many tourists to enjoy diving attraction while seeing the beauty of coral reefs. As happened on Monday (Oct 8), about fifty divers mostly consisting of foreign tourists made diving en masse on the beach of Penuktukan. Such mass diving was also coupled with the introduction to the coastal region of Penuktukan as a diving site in North Bali. Inauguration of the diving site at Penuktukan was attended by the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana. Ana, a tourist from Australia, said that after diving on the coast of Penuktukan, in fact the underwater charms were not inferior to other regions in Bali, even outside the region. Ana praised the condition of coral reefs and ornamental fish population that were well maintained. Even, Ana promised to promote the diving experiences in East Buleleng in her home country that it was a diving site worth visiting. “I happen to work in a marine conservation company. I will disseminate my diving experiences at home so that many people will come to Buleleng and explore the diving site while seeing the beautiful coral reefs,” she said. Group Head of the Taman Segara Penuktukan, Nyoman Wartawan, said that since 1970 the condition of coral reefs in the village had suffered significant

damage. Such damage was triggered by the capture of ornamental fish by traditional fishermen using chemicals. In addition, the widespread collection of rocks during the decade had caused the coral reefs at Penuktukan badly damaged. In response to such condition, Wartawan together with the residents and village officials made improvement to coral reefs. As a result, though by limited capabilities, the condition of coral reef began to improve. Meanwhile, the capture of ornamental fishing activity with chemicals could be controlled. Similarly, the collection of coral reef processed into limestone could be minimized by degrees, so that condition of the coral reefs along 250 meters recovered. Since then, the group he managed was then focused on managing the waters of Penuktukan as marine protected areas (MPAs) as well as diving site. “Thankfully, having been coached by the government and got advocacy from the NGO, our endeavor could maintain and preserve the coral reef. Afterward, it could provide many benefits because many guests are interested to dive here,” he said. According to Wartawan, to dive in the waters of Penuktukan, a diver did not need to use a boat to search for location. A diver was just enough to swim on the beach verge and move to the sea as far as about 12-15 meters, the park of coral reef belonging to three types could be found. “Here, there are indeed three very interesting areas and to reach the diving site visitors do not need to use a boat because it is very close to the beach,” he explained. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Early Sunday (Oct. 7), a 50-foot fin whale was spotted belly-up in Boston Harbor. Biologists are still investigating the cause of death, but some scientists on the scene said they saw a lot of bruising and pressure lines on the whale’s body, according to WCBV-TV. Such markings could indicate the whale got tangled or wrapped in something, which might not come as a surprise. A report out this month found that humans might be to blame for most large whale deaths over the past 40 years in the northwest Atlantic Ocean, with entanglement in fishing gear the No. 1 killer. The study looked at 1,762 known deaths and likely fatal injuries from 1970 to 2009 among eight species of big whales in the region, including the endangered fin whales, which reach up to 90 feet (27 meters) in length, making them the secondlargest living mammals after blue

whales. A cause of death had been determined in 750 of the cases (around 42 percent), and of those, nearly 67 percent of the fatalities were human related. Getting ensnared in fishing gear was the leading cause of death across all species, killing 323 whales, while vessel strikes took the lives of 171 more. Meanwhile, 248 whales died of causes not directly related to humans, such as an infection, stranding or natural causes, the researchers said. Since 2003, there has been a rise in efforts to cut down on accidents involving whales, such as a 2008 U.S. legislation known as the

Ship Strike Rule, which introduced restrictions on certain routes and speeds, aiming to reduce the number of vessel strikes on right whales. However, the researchers noted that they saw no significant change in vessel-strike fatalities in light of these reforms. “So far, regulatory efforts have not reduced the lethal effects of human activities to large whales on a population-range basis, although we do not exclude the possibility of success of targeted measures for specific local habitats that were not within the resolution of our analyses,” the authors wrote.

Researchers have found trapped in amber a rare dinosaur-age scene of a spider attacking a wasp caught in its web. The piece of amber, which contains 15 intact strands of spider silk, provides the first fossil evidence of such an assault, the researchers said. It was excavated in a Burmese mine and dates back to the Early Cretaceous, between 97 million and 110 million years ago. “This juvenile spider was going to make a meal out of a tiny parasitic wasp, but never quite got to it,” George Poinar, Jr., a zoology professor at Oregon State University, said in a

statement. “This was a male wasp that suddenly found itself trapped in a spider web. This was the wasp’s worst nightmare, and it never ended. The wasp was watching the spider just as it was about to be attacked, when tree resin flowed over and captured both of them.” Poinar and Ron Buckley, an amber collector from Kentucky, described the find in a paper published in the October issue of the journal Historical Biology. They wrote that while there are examples of amber-trapped insects caught in webs, “there is no previous

fossil record of a spider attacking its ensnared prey.” The amber chunk also contains the body of another male spider in the same web, which might make the fossil the oldest known evidence of social behavior in spiders, according to the authors. Both the spider and wasp species are today extinct. But the type of wasp (Cascoscelio incassus) belongs to a group that today is known to parasitize spider eggs, Poinor said. The attack on the wasp by the bristly orb-weaver spider, Geratonephila burmanica, might then be considered revenge.

An eBay auction for an original letter handwritten by Albert Einstein in which he expresses his views on the existence of God opened tonight (Oct. 8), and in about 10 minutes an anonymous bidder named o***h had placed the first offer at the opening price of $3 million. In the letter, Einstein calls belief in religion and God “pretty childish” and ridicules the idea that the Jews are a chosen people. “This is the most historic and significant piece we have listed on eBay,” Eric Gazin, president of Auction Cause, the agency managing the sale, told LiveScience in an email. “We are excited to offer a person or organization an opportunity to own perhaps one of the most intriguing 20th-century documents in existence. This personal letter from Einstein represents the nexus of science, theology, reason and culture.” Einstein handwrote the letter in German to Jewish philosopher Eric B. Gutkind on Jan. 3, 1954, a year before Einstein’s death. The letter was a response to Gutkind’s book “Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt” (1952, H. Schuman; 1st edition). In part of his letter, Einstein writes, “For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions. Compared to conventional race using a two-wheeled cart in circuit, the makepung basah or wetland buffalo race takes place in the wet rice field during the growing season. According to the elders of Peh village, Kaliakah, the wetland race was the forerunner of makepung as widely known today organized on dry land circuit. Since held in the watery and muddy rice field, the terrain is more difficult so that it will drain the energy of the buffalos when driven. The race was developed around 1920-1925 when farmers in subak territory began to grow rice. By utilizing some plots of rice fields, the pair of buffalos with a jockey competed against the other buffalos on a track along 200300 meters. A pair of buffaloes was tied together by harrow which has been made thinner and sloping. Clothes of the jockey were not absolutely complete as used in conventional race. Sometimes, they were only putting on sarong and shirtless. However, they still wore headdress of the racing typical style. Ketut Lega, 70, said the race on wetland could only be held in the paddy soil whose texture was not too deep. Therefore, the buffalos could be freely driven and not easily sunk into the mud. The only appropriate wetland for the race was around Peh village, Kaliakah. The activity was routinely held by farmers and buffalo owners around the area of Peh and Manistutu as a tryout before the race, mainly before the rice planting season at the local subak territory. “The race is indeed frequently held, but only in the growing season,” he said. If the buffalo race on dry land (makepung) put more emphases on the speed, the harrowing race more highlighted the beauty of movement and jockeys of the buffalo. A pair of buffalos had to walk straight and so did the style of buffalo head and the jockey in the competition. In fact, this ancient attraction also drew the attention of foreign tourists. As consequence, it spurred the vivacity of people at Manistutu and Peh to develop the unique agrarian art of Jembrana society. I Ketut Master, one of the initiators of the attraction, combined the attractions of wetland buffalo race with a number of art activities such as

Jegog and trail motor touring around Kaliakah and Manistutu. By teaming up with hotels and travel agencies, the racing community groups were especially empowered by organizing the wetland buffalo race. “Indeed, we do not have a regular agenda like the buffalo race in circuit over the years. However, it can be held twice in a week if there are requests from travel agency,” said Master. As seen last Monday, the group of tourists from the People’s Republic of China witnessed the wetland buffalo race. A number of East Asian tourists were deeply satisfied to see the attraction despite being showered by drizzles. They were willing to be wet under the rain just to take pictures of the art they rarely encountered. The object of a pair of buffalos driven amidst the rice field was really different from the buffalo race in dry land circuit as commonly seen. “We deliberately invite tourists to the harrowing race because it is one of the ancient and rare cultures. As one of the unique attractions in Jembrana, it is then developed by involving local community groups for tourist attraction,” said Gede Sukadana, one of the hoteliers in Jembrana. (olo)

Singaraja, a town located on the northern coas t of Bali has a long history of ups and downs during its course up to now. During the colonial era, it was the centre of the Dutch Colonial Administration of Bali with its Buleleng Harbour as Bali’s gateway. The legacies of this era can be seen in several places in town such as on the Buleleng Harbour, old concrete bridge which now stands side by side with a steel bridge, an ex office of KPM which has been converted just recently into an IMACO ( International Mask and Culture Organization ) Conference and Exhibition site, along the street of Ngurah Rai, the main venue for the town, several houses still can be found with distinct Dutch architecture. After the independence Singaraja was the capital of Nusa Tenggara Province encompassing a chain of islands from Bali on the west and Timor on the east. Around 1959 the Province of Nusa Tenggara then was divided into three provinces namely the Province of Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara. The capital of a new Province of Bali was no longer Singaraja but Denpasar instead which is located in the south coast of Bali. Consequently, all government administrative facilities gradually were moved to the new capital. As a result, Singaraja gradually was decreasing its role and eventually became a very quiet town. In contrast, Denpasar has been becoming more congested and crowded due to the centre of all kind of activities, government, education, commerce and military, just to mention a few. With the opening of Ngurah Rai International Airport in a suburb of Denpasar, more people have been traveling by air instead of by sea and Buleleng Harbour is no longer used as a gateway for those travelling by sea. In the tourism sector, tourism has been developing in the south very rapidly with the massive development of a new tourist designated resort, Nusa Dua, located not far from the airport beside the existing resorts, Sanur and Kuta. On the northern part of Bali, most of the area belongs to the Regency of Buleleng that is divided from the south by a chain of rolling mountains, and is almost abandoned. Singaraja was the centre of the Colonial Dutch Administration and then the capital of the Province of Nusa Tenggara but has lost its important role in Bali and gradually replaced by Denpasar, Singaraja even has been called a ghost town. Due to the crowding of Denpasar followed by the rising of cost of living, ideas have been launched by some experts that activities in Bali should be dispersed throughout the island’ Education must be centred in Singaraja, military in Tabanan and tourism in other towns in Bali, as examples. In Singaraja itself, the Local Government of Buleleng has been trying hard to develop Singaraja as an educational town. Slogans promoting Singaraja as an educational town can be found in banners and billboards in several places in town and outside of town as well. History shows that Singaraja used to be the centre of education. This fact can be proven by the existence of the State Senior High School (SMA Negeri), the first of its kind found in Bali. The idea to develop Singaraja as an educational town is now not only considered a dream but convincingly it will become a reality. The conversion of the existing State Education Institute (IKIP) into Education University of Ganesha , in short called Undiksha, in line with construction of its new campus, strongly convinces all of us that Singaraja will be an educational town very soon. All of us keep our fingers crossed for this reality. As a matter of fact, many Senior High School graduates residing outside of Bali are more attracted to continuing their studies in Singaraja considering that Singaraja is a preferable place to study due to its peaceful atmosphere and low cost of living. Heavy rain flushing for half a day on Monday (Oct 8) caused a number of rooms to leak and be flooded. The most severe leakage happened in the archive room of the Bangli House. Tin roof in the façade of the Bangli Parliament Hall leaked, so the room was inundated with water. Similarly, the room of the Honorary Agency of Bangli House was flooded so that the carpet had to be rolled. Drops of water due to a leaky roof also happened in the meeting room of the Bangli House. Water trickled down and made the table wet where the Chairman and Regent of Bangli usually presided over. Since the continued discussion on the amendment of Bangli Regional Budget 2012 happened to take place, the long table where the officials were presiding over the meeting was then shifted backward by a number of Bangli House staff. As observation in the field, other than leaking at some points in the office of the Bangli Parliament Hall, similar condition also hit the room of the Bangli Public Relation and Regional Secretariat. In this office, the water even stagnated in the entrance hallway to west door. The water rushed in because the building roof had decayed and hollowed. Several staff of the Bangli Government and Bangli House admitted if the flooding when it rained was a commonplace. As consequence, the employees were forced to shift some office furniture, especially in the Archive Room of the Bangli Parliament Hall. Aside from storing many files, a number of electronic equipment such as computers were also kept in this room. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Honorary Council of the Bangli House, I Nyoman Adnyana, when asked for his confirmation said the leaks during the rainy season was possibly caused by a shifted or decayed roof as happened to his office. Safe forced open, IDR 26 million gone Denpasar (Bali Post) –

West Denpasar seemed to have been targeted by robbers a lot. Previously a Fashion Market (FB) got its shop walls’ holed and it’s safe forced open while this time the same happen to Developer Griya Estate at Kargo Street No 171 B, Denpasar. Around IDR 26 million of cash were managed to be taken. The incident was known by Monday (8/10) morning where a number of workers were shocked their space is in a mess. The third floor was then the first place checked thoroughly knowing it’s the company’s director space and it’s safe is found totally damaged as stated by employee, Nyoman Sulastra. “The wall holed has a diameter of 50 centimeters. It is not known what they have used as no evidences were found around the location by the Police who are investigating the crime scene,” Sulastra continued. It was predicted that robbers took action between Saturday, Sunday and Monday early morning as on Saturday the office is open while Sunday is a holiday. The back of the office is an empty land and it seemed the robbers came from there, jumped off the fences wall and holed the building’s walls. This has been the fourth time his working place being robbed yet Sulastra didn’t specify when it happened. Head of the Police, APC Leo Martin Pasaribu, confirmed the incident and to have investigated the crime scene and checked several witnesses. What’s saddening, there were actually safety alarm placed yet this time it didn’t rang as its cable is not all connected. “It is planned to be fixed today,” Sulastra stated. (kmb21)

ROME — The United Nations now says its 2009 headline-grabbing announcement that 1 billion people in the world were hungry was offtarget and that the number is actually more like 870 million. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization blamed flawed methodology and poor data for the bum projection, and said it now uses a much more accurate set of parameters and statistics to calculate its annual estimate of the world’s hungry. FAO issued its 2012 state of food insecurity report on Tuesday, and its core point was to set the record straight about the number of the world’s undernourished people, applying the more accurate data retroactively back to 1990. And the good news, FAO said, is that the number of hungry people has actually been declining steadily — rather than increasing — over the past two decades, although progress has slowed since the 2007-2008 food crises and the global economic downturn. FAO said that if the right action is taken now to boost economic growth

and invest in agriculture, particularly in poor countries, the U.N. goal of reducing by one-half the number of the world’s hungry people by 2015 is very much within reach. To be sure, 870 million hungry people is still far too many hungry people, said the heads of the three U.N. food agencies in a forward to the report. “In today’s world of unprecedented technical and economic opportunities, we find it entirely unacceptable that more than 100 million children under the age of five are underweight, and are therefore unable to realize their full socio-economic and human potential,” they wrote. FAO made headlines in 2009 when it announced that 1 billion people — one-sixth of the world’s population — were undernourished. A high-level summit was called at FAO headquarters in Rome. The

U.N. chief went on a daylong hunger strike to show solidarity with the 1 billion. The Group of Eight devoted much of its summit that year to pledging $20 billion for seeds, fertilizers and tools to help poor nations feed themselves. It turns out, though, that the projections were wrong. They were calculated using figures from nonU.N. sources that were fed into the U.N.’s number-crunching model, because FAO was under pressure from governments to quickly come up with an estimate of how many people might go hungry from the dual crises of high food prices and the global downturn, said Kostas Stamoulis, director of FAO’s agricultural development economics division. Already, in 2010 FAO said the number of the world’s hungry was down to 925 million, though it didn’t explain how it came to that figure. On Tuesday, FAO officials said the new number of hungry people for 2012 was 870 million, and the organization revised all of its figures from 1990 using a new methodology.

CARACAS — During his reelection campaign, President Hugo Chavez promised to deepen the “21st century socialism” that has meant an ever-greater state role in the economy. That message won him a surprising 11-percentage point win in what many had thought would be a tight race. Still, he’s set to start a fourth presidential term under challenging economic circumstances. The government’s free-spending ways, bankrolling the generous social programs that aided his re-election, may be seriously crimped. Chavez faces immediate economic time bombs beginning with a rapidly expanding public debt, one of Latin America’s highest inflation rates and a weakening currency. Many economists believe Chavez will have no choice but to devalue the currency, the bolivar, by about half early next year at the latest. That will make the money in people’s pockets suddenly worth a lot less and likely drive inflation while putting imported consumer goods out of reach for poorer Venezuelans. “He’s going to have to deal with some very basic, mundane capitalist things, like reducing inflation,” which stands at 18 percent, said Eduardo Gamarra, a Latin American studies professor at Florida International University in Miami. Price controls and government subsidies for basic foodstuffs have eased inflationary pressures but a major devaluation would drive prices higher and could worsen scarcities, economists say. “Investment in social issues is great, but he needs to do other things as well that are going to make that economy more productive,” said

But economist David Rees of London-based Capital Economics said the government has relatively few dollars left, “having utilized them to fund an import binge ahead of the ballot. China options limited as U.S. panel outcasts Huawei, ZTE BEIJING/HONG KONG China’s leading telecom equipment makers accused in a U.S. congressional report of being a potential security risk may face fresh scrutiny in other markets, while American firms operating in China could be vulnerable to retaliation. The U.S. House of Representatives’ Intelligence Committee on Monday warned that China could use equipment made by Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corp - the world’s second- and fifth-largest makers of routers and telecoms gear - for cyber-espionage through software embedded in Chinesemade network equipment. In its 52-page report, the committee noted that “China’s military and intelligence services, recognizing the technological superiority of the U.S. military, are actively searching for asymmetrical advantages that could be exploited in any future conflict with the United States. ... Malicious implants in the components of critical infrastructure, such as power grids or financial networks, would also be a tremendous weapon in China’s arsenal,” it stated. China’s official People’s Daily newspaper accused the committee on Tuesday of acting on a “presumption of guilt” against Huawei and ZTE. “This

foolhardy political step ... will impede the healthy development of Sino-American trade cooperation,” said a commentary in the newspaper, which generally reflects government thinking. It added that the committee had produced “not an iota” of evidence to back its accusation that Huawei and ZTE products were used for espionage in the United States. “This report, which spurns the facts and is suffused with prejudice, is a vicious expansion of trade protectionism,” it said. The blow-up - a Xinhua English-language commentary spoke of “a Cold War mentality” in the United States - comes at a sensitive time for U.S.-China relations, ahead of U.S. presidential and congressional elections and a leadership transition in China. Tensions have ratcheted higher with a series of trade actions against China by President Barack Obama, including his blocking of a privately owned Chinese firm from building wind turbines close to a U.S. military site, and his challenge of Chinese auto and auto-parts subsidies in a World Trade Organization (WTO) case. HONG KONG - The IMF on Tuesday cut its growth forecasts for developing Asia, blaming a slowdown in Europe and the United States, and warned that China’s attempts to boost its economy had not taken hold. It also cut the outlook on Japan, saying disaster reconstruction spending would tail off and lead to weaker growth next year. The International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook comes at the beginning of a week that will see it and the World Bank hold their annual meetings in Japan, ahead of a meeting of the Group of Seven. It also reinforces concerns expressed by the World Bank on Monday and Asian Development Bank last week as they cut their regional forecasts, citing global weaknesses. The IMF said growth for developing Asia would come in at 6.7 percent this year and 7.2 percent in 2013. That compares with July’s estimate of 7.1 percent this year and 7.5 percent next year. “Compared with the region’s

growth performance in recent years, the near- and medium-term outlooks are less buoyant,” the report said. “This view reflects weaker anticipated external demand resulting from the tepid growth prospects in major advanced economies and a downshift in China’s and India’s growth prospects.” It warned a worsening of the eurozone debt crisis and failure by US lawmakers to avert a possible “fiscal cliff” could fuel problems. China’s economy, a key driver of regional growth, will see just 7.8 percent expansion this year, the IMF warned, but 8.2 percent next year as easing measures kick in. Both figures are lower than the July forecasts of 8.0 percent and 8.5

percent. The numbers are well down from the 9.3 percent surge in 2011 and 10.4 percent in 2010. Beijing has tried to spur growth by slashing interest rates twice this year and cutting the amount of funds banks must keep in reserve. “This easing, however, has not yet gained the traction expected earlier in the year,” the IMF said. Japan is tipped to see 2.2 percent growth this year owing to spending on post-tsunami work, but that would ease to 1.2 percent next year. In July the IMF forecast 2012 growth of 2.4 percent and 1.5 percent in 2013. The Fund did say monetary easing would support the economy but further measures would be needed to fight painful deflation. There are also growing fears about the impact on the world economy of a territorial feud between China and Japan. Earlier this month IMF chief Christine Lagarde said the dispute could not be allowed to fester.

Two other Britons facing multiple charges in the case could face the death penalty. But prosecutors only charged Dougall with possession of nearly fifty grams of cocaine. “In a police raid at the defendant’s villa, police found a cigarette package containing 48.94 grams of cocaine in her bag,” one of the prosecutors, Putu Astawa, told Denpasar district court. The charge carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Astawa said that “no evidence” was found that Dougall had ordered five kg of cocaine as mentioned earlier by British woman Lindsay June Sandiford.

Sandiford is one of the two Britons facing a possible death sentence if convicted, after being arrested in May at the island’s airport. In total, four Britons and an Indian were detained in May in connection with the alleged cocaine plot. Indonesia enforces stiff penalties for drug trafficking. Two members of an Australian drug smuggling gang known as the “Bali Nine”, who were arrested in 2005, are on death row, while seven others face lengthy jail terms. Another Australian, Schapelle Corby, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for smuggling 4.1 kg of marijuana in 2005. She recently had her term slashed by five years after a clemency appeal to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

ISLAMABAD - A brain-eating amoeba has killed at least 10 people in Pakistan’s most populous city since May, a World Health Organization official said on Tuesday. Naegleria fowleri has a fatality rate of more than 98 percent. It is transmitted when contaminated water enters the body through the nose and cannot be passed person-to-person. The 10 confirmed cases have all occurred in the southern port city of Karachi, said Dr Musa Khan, head of the WHO’s Disease Early Warning System in Pakistan. It is unclear if all cases have been reported as residents may not be familiar with the disease and Pakistan’s hospitals are severely overstretched. The amoeba travels from the nasal membranes to the brain. Symptoms are initially very mild, including a headache, stiff neck, fever and stomach pain. Death usually occurs five to seven days after infection. Authorities are planning a campaign to raise awareness among health workers and the public, Khan said. Most health centres had already been alerted, he said. “People should avoid getting water too deep into their nostrils and make sure their water supply is properly treated,” he said. “Those with symptoms should seek help immediately.” Victims commonly catch it through swimming in infected water, but Khan said most of those who died did not have a history of swimming. Authorities were testing water from various parts of the city, he said. The disease first surfaced in Karachi, a city of 18 million people, in 2006. The village of Trunyan is squeezed tightly between the lake and the outer crater rim of Batur, an almighty volcano in Kintamani. This is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century. It is famous for the Pura Pancering Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There are also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more than 1,100 years old. At Kuban subvillage close to Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat - there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim. The village of Trunyan itself is situated at the edge of Batur Lake. This location is inaccessible except by boat, and it takes around half an hour across the calm waters. Getting to Lake Batur takes around two hours drive to the northeast of Denpasar along the main road to Buleleng and through Bangli Regency. Unlike the Balinese people, the people of Trunyan do not cremate or bury their dead, but just lay them out in bamboo cages to decompose, although strangely there is no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones lies on the stone platform and the surrounding areas. The dead bodies don’t produce bad smells because of the perfumed scents from a huge Taru Menyan tree growing nearby. Taru means ‘tree’ and Menyan means ‘nice smell’. The name of Terunyan was also derived from these two words. The women from Trunyan are prohibited from going to the cemetery when a dead body is carried there. This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery while a corpse is being carried there, there will be a disaster in the village, for example a landslide or a volcanic eruption. Such events have been frequent in the village’s history, but whether women had anything to do with it is a matter of opinion... You can visit both the village of Trunyan and the Kuban cemetery by chartered boat from Kedisan. Sadly, nowadays the boat trips are now blatant tourist traps, as touts and guides strongly urge you to donate your cash to the temple project or leave a donation for the dead. These touts ruin an otherwise fascinating experience.

Hey, referee! That was a goal! Or it was very, very close. To be fair to Howard Webb and his team of touchline assistants, it wasn’t humanly possible for them to judge whether it was or wasn’t. It all happened in the blink of an eye. The ball thudded off Manchester United’s crossbar, down onto the turf and back up to head-height with Papiss Cisse. The Newcastle United striker from Senegal, not particularly tall but plenty quick, then head-butted it as hard as he possibly could at United’s goal. Newcastle was 2-0 down at this point. A score from Cisse could have put his team back in the game. B u t U n i t e d ’s y o u n g Spanish ‘keeper, David De Gea, got a gloved hand to it. Diving acrobatically to his left, he scooped the ball away — either as it was crossing, or after it had crossed, United’s goal-line. Which was it? We’ll never know.

Machines exist that could have told us. But they’re still not being used in football— making the sport and people who run it look it silly. Because this is silly. In years to come, we’ll look back on this era when technology could have solved a glaring problem but wasn’t quickly deployed and wonder how this was possible. How could administrators of the world’s most popular game have been so boneheaded and sluggish? Did-it-or-didn’t-it-cross-theline incidents are a serious but treatable disease for football. Medicines are there to vaccinate against it, in the shape of detection systems with cameras or sensors to tell referees when a goal is a goal. The medicine should have been administered long ago. FIFA is getting there, slowly and proceeding with extreme caution and lashings of red tape. Like those who took so long to accept that the Earth revolves around the Sun, FIFA boss Sepp Blatter won’t be remembered for his U-turn in 2010 when he finally recognized the need for goal-line technology but for the amount of time and evidence it took for him

to reach that conclusion. After rounds of testing over months and in different countries, proposed goal-line systems from eight companies have been whittled down to two: HawkEye, using multiple cameras, and GoalRef, employing magnetic sensors. There’ll be yet more testing, in competition this time, at FIFA’s Club World Cup in Japan in December. That should clear the way for the use of these technologies at FIFA’s Confederations Cup in Brazil next June and then for one or both to be used at Brazilian stadiums staging the World Cup in 2014. Too late, in other words, to have helped Webb referee Newcastle against United on Sunday. Even television replays and magnified freeze-frames couldn’t provide a conclusive answer as to whether all of the ball crossed the line before de Gea slapped it away. In real time, at that speed, and without the benefit of replays, Webb’s assistant can’t be expected to have seen it, either. United manager Alex Ferguson was honest enough to admit that it wouldn’t have been an injustice if Webb had awarded a goal, “because I thought enough of the

ball’s over” the line. “It’s inconclusive to be honest with you. The whole ball’s not over but I would be disappointed if we didn’t get a goal ourselves in that situation,” he said. The Newcastle perspective from manager Alan Pardew was: “It’s so close to call. I’ve looked at it about seven times and I still can’t make out whether it went in or didn’t.” How absurd. Respected man-

agers like Ferguson and Pardew and referees like Webb having to guess about the trajectory of a ball in the era of space travel. It’s unfair on them. It makes football look foolish. And it happens every season, at every major tournament — with England’s disallowed goal against Germany at the 2010 World Cup followed by what should have been a goal for Ukraine against England at Euro 2012.

Save coral reefs, inaugurate diving site

FISHERMEN at Penuktukan village, Tejakula subdistrict, are indeed praiseworthy in the efforts to rescue the coral reefs in the waters of the village. Various efforts made by fisherman to restore the damaged coral reefs since the 1970s have transformed them into beautiful undersea charms. As an impact, the sea of the village is now visited by many tourists to enjoy diving attraction while seeing the beauty of coral reefs. As happened on Monday (Oct 8), about fifty divers mostly consisting of foreign tourists made diving en masse on the beach of Penuktukan. Such mass diving was also coupled with the introduction to the coastal region of Penuktukan as a diving site in North Bali. Inauguration of the diving site at Penuktukan was attended by the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana. Ana, a tourist from Australia, said that after diving on the coast of Penuktukan, in fact the underwater charms were not inferior to other regions in Bali, even outside the region. Ana praised the condition of coral reefs and ornamental fish population that were well maintained. Even, Ana promised to promote the diving experiences in East Buleleng in her home country that it was a diving site worth visiting. “I happen to work in a marine conservation company. I will disseminate my diving experiences at home so that many people will come to Buleleng and explore the diving site while seeing the beautiful coral reefs,” she said.
