Criminal cases that recently afflicted foreign tourists in Kuta made apprehensive. Tourism practitioner I Nyoman Rutha Adi, in Denpasar, Wednesday (Sep 30) revealed, there were two criminal modi operandi that making the community restless and more afflicting tourists at Kuta tourist resort lately. “Firstly, pickpocketing, snatching and robbery accompanied with violence that threatening the life of foreign tourists. Secondly, fraud by person of moneychanger that has taken place for years but there were no effective preventive solution s provided by authorized institution,” said former Head of Coordination Board of Kuta Area Security (BK4) of 1997-2000 tenure. He worried about minimal reveal of cases afflicting foreigners during their stay in Bali. At the end, such criminal act was considered something normative as consequence of tourism development. If this happened, in relatively short time the image of Bali tourism would fall

Having reached success in organizing the Garuda Indonesia Bali International Marathon 2008, Garuda Indonesia again organized similar event. The “2nd Garuda Indonesia Bali International Marathon 2009” will be held, Sunday (Oct 18) in Nusa Dua. To describe the activity, Head of Organizing Committee, IB Antara and GM of Garuda Indonesia Bali, Bagus Y Siregar, made a visit to K Nadha Bali Press Building, Wednesday (Sep 30) and received by CEO of Bali Post Media Group (KMB), Satria Naradha. The event originated in the idea of Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs responding by Garuda Indonesia and Minister of Culture and Tourism. Such cooperation resulted in run race of which participants would be from overseas and home. “Through this race, we would like to deliver to overseas community that Bali is safe and conducive for foreign tourists,” said Antara. This year, the race competes for a total prizes worth IDR 250 mil-
lion with assumption that total participants are 10,000. There are three categories put into competition, namely 5 km, 10 km and 21km (semi-marathon). Participants will be divided into international, national and local group. Bagus Y Siregar added that Garuda Indonesia had interest in this activity because Bali denoted the main destination. “By this event, we take part in promoting Bali and Garuda. We expect this event should be organized every year. Even, if possible there should be monthly event in Bali so there will be no low season in Bali, but always high season. This will have implication on the economy of community,” he said. In addition, he also said that foreign participants would be mostly from Japan since Japanese had great interest in marathon run. However, foreign participants were also expected from countries other than Japan. Satria Naradha welcomed and appreciated the event that could promote Bali. Based on survey, culture and beauty of Bali’s nature remain to become a top reason. Survey that was just com-
pleted by Center for Cultural and Tourism Research of Udayana University in 2009, the most favored destination by domestic tourists consisted of beauty of nature (73.2 percent), culture (21.7 percent) and others (5.1 percent). Elements of Balinese culture favored were arts (26.1 percent), tradition (21.3 percent), handicrafts (18 percent), traditional architecture (12.4 percent) Balinese food (7.6 percent), religion/spirituality (5 percent), history and archaeology (4.5 percent), spa (3.1 percent), beauty of countryside (2 percent) and others (0.1 percent).
Visit of domestic tourists to Bali in 2008 was predicted to reach some 2.9 million. Based on data at Bali Government Tourism Office in 1998, Balinese culture became the first attraction among the reasons of foreign tourists to come to Bali (55.7 percent), followed by beauty of nature (29.4 percent) and other elements. Regarding to impression on environmental sanitation in Bali, domestic tourists assessed that it has been clean (57.9 percent), moderately clean (27.2 percent) and less clean (8.1 percent), very clean (6.3 percent) and poorly clean (0.5 percent). Three residents from Malang inhabiting a house at Gang Katalia No. 7, Ubung, Denpasar were jabbed by machete blindly by mysterious man. Such unknown man put on veil when performed his action. Doer jabbed three residents namely a couple Amin (35 and Sariem (35), as well as Faisol (35). Allegedly, such action was driven by revenge. The three victims got serious injury and were in intensive care at Wangaya Hospital, Denpasar. Information obtained at location, mentioned that jabbing case took place at 01:00 Local Time. The three victims just arrived from coming home was suddenly visited by a veiled man. Originally, the doer approached the victim Faisol sleeping outside. “I was sleeping at that time. My neck was straightly choked,” Faisol said yesterday. The doer cut down the victim Faisol by sharp weapon. More than that, the doer then entered in the
room and cut down the couple (Amin and Sariem—ed.) who were sleeping soundly. Furiously, the doer swayed his weapon to the three victims. Fresh blood spurted from the wound of the three victims. Being satisfied with his action, the doer escaped. “We were saved by local residents,” Faisol said. Prompt help provided by local residents made the three victims could be saved. Faisol suffered from thorn wound on head, chest and back. Even, his fingers were almost broken off due to the attack of machete. “The incident took place so quickly,” said the man having thin posture. In the meantime, the couple Amin and Sariem was also seriously injured. His wounds looked wide open and so did their cheek and right hand was thorn. Meanwhile, Sariem suffered from jabbed wound on forehead, left hand and fingers. Unit Chief of Criminal Researcher of West Denpasar Sector Police, Wayan Wisnawa, when asked about his confirmation yesterday said his party remained to investigate the case. “We are pursuing the doer,” he told journalists briefly. Discourse on relocation of School of The Disabled (SLB B PTN) Bali at Jimbaran to ex Balitex, Tohpati, in fact was not just a discourse. Its evidence, Bali Government has prepared a budget worth IDR 20 billion for the interest. However, the plan seemed to be hided because it has not been socialized to school and parent of students rejecting such relocation. There was rumor saying that Bali Governor Mangku Pastika would relocate such 5-hectare school for the sake of investor. It was revealed on the meeting of school, representatives of student’s parent with Bali Office of Education, Youth and Sport (Disdikpora), Commission D of Badung House, Badung Disdikpora, apparatus of sub district and Head of Jimbaran Village at local school, Wednesday (Sep 30). Representatives of parents essentially rejected the relocation plan of school. Various considerations especially psychological aspect of student and location became the main reason causing parents persisted not to relocate the school. Edwin, one of the parents’ representatives, mentioned that almost 60 percent of SLB B’s students were residents of South Kuta, notably Pecatu, Ungasan, Jimbaran. Now, students and parents felt convenient with spacious location that was considered appropriate for therapy of autism and deaf students. Ideally, government did not tinker with the school. Moreover, with mental disorder owned by students, it was worried that many students would not be willing to
resume their study. “Our children are not like those in common. If they have rejected, we could do nothing,” he said. Social relationship of SLB founded 25 years ago with tourism businesspeople has been well established. He said that tourism sector like BTDC has provided much assistance. “We have felt convenient with condition of this school. If has been convenient why should be relocated. If based on tourism consideration, it is even illogical,” he added. Similar opinion was disclosed by Agus Sofyan. He even asked Bali Provincial Government to express it frankly the reason of relocation. “If it is indeed for the sake of business interest, please advise it frankly,” he asserted. Regarding to such relocation, Headmaster Made Murdani confessed to have not been informed both orally and in written. She said, around last April and May, Governor Mangku Pastika once made a visit to school. However, the visit was intended to have closer
look at the existence of school and students, not more than that. From Badung House, I Ketut Suda Arsa, said ideally such relocation plan should be socialized in advance, not performed by one side. Member of the House from South Kuta felt so surprised on knowing the relocation plan that seemed in a sudden. “I personally reject the relocation plan. Why it should be relocated when it has high economic value. It’s so strange,” he affirmed. His colleague, Wayan Reta, disclosed similar opinion. He urged Bali Provincial Government to be more transparent concerning with utilization of the land belonging to SLB. Division Head of Disdikpora of Bali Province, Ariasa, described the discourse on school relocation originated when Governor inspected the location. According to him, Governor truly put concern on SLB in Bali. Seeing such extensive condition of SLB B Jimbaran Governor worried if the operational costs would become a problem in the future. (ded)

CONAKRY - Guinea’s military ruler asked for a UN-backed probe after junta forces massacred more than 150 people and called for the setting up of an interim government until elections due in January. Bowing to mounting global condemnation of the worst carnage in the west African country in 25 years and the European Union threatening sanctions, Captain Moussa Dadis Camara made peace overtures late Wednesday. Camara called for a “wise African president to mediate in Guinea,” “the setting up of a UNbacked international probe,” and the creation of a “national unity government comprising all political parties” until elections next year. The UN Security Council accused Guinean troops of “blatant violations of human rights, including rapes in public streets in broad daylight” and strongly condemned the massacre, which it said had claimed more than 150 lives. Many of them appear to be fixated on what jobs they may get,” she said, referring to Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrat (CDU/CSU) bloc, which turned in its worst score since 1949 in Sunday’s general election. FDP general secretary Dirk Niebel questioned Merkel’s declaration that the main pillars of a reform of the health-care system passed under the previous “grand coalition” government would not be touched. He said the conservatives needed to remember that they had campaigned for the election seeking a coalition with the Free Democrats, arguing a centre-right government was best-suited to lift Germany out of its worst postwar slump. “We are extending a hand to the Union to get out of this swamp,” he told the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper. WASHINGTON - A senior US official said Wednesday he was hopeful after the highest-level talks with Myanmar in nearly a decade but warned against lifting sanctions until the junta moves on democracy. Kurt Campbell, the assistant secretary of state for Asian affairs, met Tuesday with a delegation from Myanmar in New York one day after he unveiled a new blueprint of engaging the longtime pariah state. “There were certainly no breakthroughs, but a very clear determination that dialogue was possible on the side of Burma,” Campbell, using Myanmar’s old name, said as he testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
He said that the US side laid out clear demands for the regime, including freeing political prisoners such as democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel laureate who has spent most of the past two decades under house arrest. “Lifting or easing sanctions at the outset of a dialogue without meaningful progress on our concerns would be a mistake,” Campbell said. Campbell called on the junta to engage in a dialogue with the opposition and restive ethnic groups and warned that any insincere attempt “would get virtually no international support or recognition.” Wednesday’s hearing was called by Senator Jim Webb, who in August paid an unprecedented visit to
Myanmar to meet both with top junta leader Than Shwe and Aung San Suu Kyi. Webb, a gruff author and former combat Marine, is the leading advocate in Congress of engaging Myanmar. He often points to the example of Vietnam, saying that the easing of US sanctions helped open up the communist state. In a silent protest, monks poured into the Senate hearing room along with dozens of critics of the Myanmar regime wearing bright green shirts that read, “Burma is not Vietnam.” Webb said that while the United States had “honorable” motives in isolating Myanmar, it was merely losing leverage as neighboring nations — particularly China — are keen to do business with Myanmar.

MA to set up seven corruption courts Antara
JAKARTA - The Supreme Court (MA) will set up seven corruption courts until early 2010 following the passage of the bill on corruption courts, MA spokesman Hatta Ali said here on Wednesday. The seven corruption courts will be located in seven provinces,
namely in Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Makassar, Palembang, Medan and Samarinda, he said. He said initially the courts would be set up in seven big cities where the number of cases was expected to be big. “The establishment of corruption courts will be done in stages until reaching 33 provinces within two years. This is in line with the mes-
sage of the law on corruption courts,” he said. He said the corruption courts to be set up in the seven provinces would also include appeals courts. For the time being the courts will be located at the district courts, he said. He said the apparatus of the courts would be immediately formed after a national working
meeting in Palembang, he said. “In line with the message of the law each corruption court would have four ad hoc and four career judges,” he said, adding MA now has 600 career judges. Regarding composition of judges for a session he said it would be referred to the head of the district court concerned. He said MA would issue a regu-
lation regarding the criteria for determining the number of judges in a case. “MA will produce a regulation to determine whether a case should be handled by five or three judges or in which case the number ad hoc judges or career judges should be bigger,” he said adding the regulation would be distributed to all district courts for a reference.

The improvement of procedures includes provision of maximum legal aid for suspects and witnesses, he said. “Other items include a call for effective communications among law enforcers,” he said. The team has already kept three names to fill the vacant posts in the KPK.
Another team member Adnan Buyung Nasution said the three came from within KPK and outside the institution. “Thank God we have already determined the three persons after shortlisting,” he said. He said persons from within the KPK did not mean the ones now still in the institution but also former KPK chairmen and KPK candidates for 2007 selection who failed in the fit and proper test by the House of Representatives (DPR). “The three are anti-corruption activists. They are not all from within KPK but a combination (of persons from within and outside). Those from within can be former chairmen and also those who once participated in the selection by selection committee,” he said.

would recruit the suicide bombers and give them a fatwa, he said. In disclosing the case of the bombings at RitzCarlton and JW Marriott the police also discovered a new fact namely that the bombings would be carried out at the same time, rather than one after the other. The group has even prepared a car bomb sent from Solo in addition to some other ready-to-be used bombs in Jatiasih, Bekasi, West Java, he said. In the raid in Mojosongo, Solo, Central Java, the police also found 200 kilograms of explosives for the building of bombs. This proves that they planned more attacks, he said. He said the police believed the explosives would be immediately made into bombs because Ario Sudarso, who was killed in the raid, who made the bombs for the Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott hotel bombings was also there. “The serial attack pattern is not found before. Before, they would be inactive for a year after conducting the bombings. Attack and then inactive. Bali bombings were done in 2002, followed by the Atrium bombing in 2003, the Australian embassy bombing in 2004 and other Bali bombings in 2005,” he said.
JAKARTA - The House of Representatives (DPR)’s Commission XI on financial affairs revealed Tuesday night the results of the State Audit Board (BPK)’s interim audit on problematic Bank Century. Commission XI chairman Achmad Hafiz said the BPK in a closed-door meeting had presented a progress report to the House and after studying the report the House found that various banking crimes had been committed in the bank’s dealings. “The banking crimes included misappropriation of promissory notes, fictitious credits, violation of the maximum limit of credit provision (BNPK), fictitious spendings and violation of foreign exchange reserves requirement,” Achmad Hafiz Zawawi said. The interim audit report also indicated that abuse of authority or error of judgment by Bank Indonesia (BI/the central bank) and the Financial Sector Stability Committee
(KSSK) had also occurred causing considerable financial losses to the state. “There was a change in BI requirement which had not received approval from the DPR, namely the change in the Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) requirement from 8 percent to only a positive CAR rate in receiving a short-term financing facility (FPJP),” he said. The change in the CAR requirement enabled Bank Century to receive the FPJP facility while in fact, if it followed the previous requirement; it had no right to enjoy the facility. Besides, there was an error of judgment at a meeting of the KSSK which concluded that the Bank Century case could have a systemic impact so that the injection fund which initially only amounted to Rp630 billion was increased to Rp6.76 trillion. “We are of the opinion that BI was very weak in its supervision and provided invalid data, so that an error in judging the case occurred,” Zawawi said.

The head of Dharmadhyaksa PHDI, Ida Pedanda Gde Ketut Subali Tianyar Arimbawa, said “the conference will be joined by 200 participants from all provinces in Indonesia.” The PHDI chose Bali as the place of the conference because most of the committee was coming from Bali so they could use the chance to meet with their families and relatives in the island. “The event will be held just after Galungan day so the participants could celebrate the day in their native home in Bali,” added Subali. The conference is the 50th conference since PHDI established in 1958.

Within the offering, it usually includes some amounts of cash of which number is not determined, merely based on the sincerity of the family that organizes the ritual. Or at least, depends on what is usually paid by others in its vicinity. Making offerings is not only the responsibility of tukang banten but also of all devotees. At least, devotees should know the simplest or commonest offering presented in this regular occasion. Meanwhile, tukang banten will have the capacity of ‘architect’ of banten making on the one hand, consultant and instructor on the other. People that find difficulty in making the offering can consult them. Apart from learning by doing, people can now take short courses of banten making or even watch a television program interactively aired by
a local private station here in Bali. By watching the program, viewers can enhance their skill of making banten and concurrently upgrade the knowledge on the symbolical and philosophical meaning of the offerings. Since the banten makers (just as the temple priest) are under control of customary villages and do devo-
tional service for it, so they are entitled to get some benefits like a uniform and cremation ceremony after death on the account of the customary village. A US cargo ship, Liberty, cast ashore at Tulamben Beach after being shot by torpedo from a Japanese submarine in the Lombok Straits (1942). BUSINESS Turkish protestor throws shoe at IMF chief Agence France-Presse
ISTANBUL - A protestor on Thursday threw a shoe at IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn as he delivered a speech to university students in Turkey’s biggest city Istanbul. The protestor, believed to be a student, shouted “IMF, Get out of Turkey!” as he ran towards the stage and threw the white sports shoe which failed to hit the IMF chief, an AFP correspondent witnessed. The shoe-throwing tactic was famously first used in Iraq last year against US President George W. Bush and there have been several copycat protests since. The Turkish protestor was immediately overpowered and escorted out by security guards. Strauss-Kahn, who was answering questions at the end of his speech, remained calm throughout the incident.
As the shoe thrower was being taken out of the conference hall at Bilgi University, another protestor attempted to unfurl a banner, but was also quickly overpowered by security guards. Both protestors were taken into police custody, the Anatolia news agency said. Several others stood up, applauding and shouting slogans denouncing the IMF and its “collusion” with Turkish government which has been negotiating for a fresh loan since last year. “IMF thief! IMF creates wars and makes people poor,” chanted the 20-strong group. In remarks to reporters after
the incident, IMF spokeswoman Caroline Atkinson gave an, ironic reaction to the protest. “The managing director noted that the students were at least polite enough to wait until the end of the discussion,” she said. “The IMF needs to speak to people and listen to people even if not everyone agrees with us.” Strauss-Kahn is in Istanbul ahead of the annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Istanbul next week. Several Turkish left-wing groups and anti-globalization activists have called for protests in the run-up and during the meetings.

TOKYO - Vehicle sales in Japan rose year-on-year for a second straight month in September, driven by government incentives for low emission cars aimed at boosting the flagging industry, data showed Thursday. The Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA) said 321,737 new cars, trucks and buses were sold in the country last month, compared to 198,265 units in August when sales showed the first year-on-year increase in 13 months. The figure marked a modest 3.5 percent increase compared to the same month last year, underlining the still fragile state of the industry and the broader economy, which is now limping out of its worst recession on record. “The auto industry continues to see the effect of the government incentives,” said a JADA official, noting that August’s turnaround came despite the fact that sales are usually low in that month due to the summer holidays. Buyers have been latching onto a government scheme in place since April that allows buyers to trade their clunkers for hybrids or electric cars in exchange for up to several thousand dollars in rebates. The world’s leading automaker Toyota Motor, which makes the Prius hybrid — Japan’s top domestic seller according to August figures — saw overall sales rise some 14 percent on-year to 130,940 units. Sales of its luxury Lexus brand jumped by nearly a third to 3,044 units. Rival Honda, which builds the Insight hybrid, saw sales increase by 15.5 percent to 48,223 units while Nissan, which is touting zero-emission electric cars, saw sales rise 7.8 percent to 49,883 units. While sales of passenger cars are on the rise, sales of trucks and buses plunged, due
to a weak construction sector and as many manufacturers have delayed building new plants due to the economic downturn. Meanwhile sales of mini-vehicles that have engines of up to 660cc, fell 5.9 percent to 156,082 units in September for the eleventh straight month, the Japan Minivehicles Association said in a separate report. The auto market has suffered years of sluggish sales as many Japanese, particularly young people in large cities, opt for public transport to avoid the high cost and taxes of maintaining cars. Weak consumer spending during the recession has also weighed heavily, while exports have slumped to major overseas markets, prompting Japanese makers to idle plants and slash thousands of jobs.

GOTHENBURG, Sweden - European countries met on Thursday to kickstart plans to end economic pump priming, but hesitated to commit to fixed dates for exit stategies tackling bloated deficits. “I think it is very difficult. I don’t think that the implication of this international crisis is a symmetric one for each of the countries,” said Portugal’s Finance Minister Fernando Teixeira dos Santos. “It’s affecting every country differently. And every country will have to define its own exit strategy in its own time. “I don’t think we can have a precise schedule or a common schedule,” he added. With recovery set to remain “fragile and flaky” into 2011, according to Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourg prime minister and head of the 16 countries that use the euro, weak growth potential is holding states back from early withdrawal of massive stimulus funding. A spiralling drain on public finances also amounts to a political conundrum for leaders facing hard-pressed voters at home. “Perhaps 2011 can be an appropriate year, but we have to wait a little bit,” said Spanish Finance Minister Elena Salgado on arrival in Gothenburg for preparatory talks gathering the euro countries. “I think we should start recovering in 2010, perhaps the second quarter of the year,” she added. The International Monetary Fund warned on Thursday that the fiscal legacy of the global crisis is “a high and rising (national) debt trajectory that could become unsustainable without significant mediumterm measures.” With millions of jobs already lost — new figures out Thursday lengthening the EU’s dole queue to 15.165 million people — host Anders Borg said economic policy would still be “very expansionary in the coming period.” Twenty out of the 27 EU countries will be operating above the bloc’s threshold for deficits, origi-

He said that making a “timely withdrawal of the temporary stimulus,” designed and communicated in advance, held the key. Ministers discussed proposals to bring about a rapid end to bank recapitalisation as the base for the exit strategy, so that budgets can gradually be brought back into line over the next five years. Targets for fiscal consolidation of at least 0.5 percent of GDP per year were also on the table. According to Brussels-based think tank Bruegel, which presented ministers with a framework for an exit strategy, “the longer that budgetary adjustment is delayed, the larger will be the debt burden that has to be dealt with in the future.” It highlighted a growing risk of inflation otherwise. Decisions on sharpening tools for bloc-wide supervision of banks and financial companies under a proposed European Systemic Risk Board and three sector-based authorities would also be discussed. Later, the full complement of EU ministers were to examine a report on stress-tests conducted into 22 major European banks, expected to reveal massive credit losses accumulated for this year and next.

A-list young actors have thirst for “Wettest County” LOS ANGELES - “The Wettest County in the World,” a film project about Depression-era bootleggers, is making waves among some of Hollywood’s leading young actors, who are drawn to its colorful setting, mystery elements and meaty roles. “Wettest” is a sweeping, historical crime drama of the American South, based on author Matt Bondurant’s grandfather and two great-uncles — three brothers who made up a fierce criminal gang at the center of the country’s moonshine trade. The book also tracks a parallel story involving the writer Sherwood Anderson, who was on the trail of the bootlegging story, reporting on the moonshine trade and researching his novel “Kit Brandon,” published in 1936. The movie, from Red Wagon and
“The Road” director John Hillcoat, was set up at Columbia Pictures about a year and a half ago but has since been dropped by the studio. It’s now in the process of being reconfigured as an indie, with financing still coming together. But the project’s ups and downs haven’t stopped it from becoming the brass ring for the next generation of Hollywood A-listers. Shia LaBeouf, Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Gosling are among the actors whose names have been presented to talent representatives and Hollywood executives as being as-
sociated with the project, though none is officially on board. Paul Dano and Michael Shannon are two other actors whose names have surfaced in connection with the project. These actors, none of whom is over age 35, have seven Oscar and Golden Globe nominations and three of the top 10 highest-grossing movies since 2007 to their credit. The project, observers say, shows that even as studios take fewer risks, worthy projects will be sustained by actors. Paul McCartney to release CD/ DVD of NY shows NEW YORK - Paul McCartney’s recent threenight concert stand in New York City — during which the rock legend delved into his Beatles, Wings and solo catalogs and brought Billy Joel to the stage — is coming to CD and DVD. On November 17, McCartney will release “Good Evening New York City,” a multi-disc set featuring nearly three hours of performances from his CitiField Stadium shows in July. Among the set highlights are Beatles classics “Drive My Car,” Eleanor Rigby” and “Hey Jude,” a tribute medley to John Lennon, and the Wings staple “Live and Let Die,” during which fireworks erupted to open McCartney’s shows.
“It was three great nights for the band, and for me personally, it was very exciting to be back opening a new stadium on the site of the old Shea Stadium where we had played 44 years previously,” said McCartney, alluding to the Beatles’ famous christening of the Mets’ original home in 1965. “Even more exciting because this time ‘round you could hear us!” “Good Evening New York City,” which will also be made available on vinyl, will include a DVD of footage compiled from Hi-Def cameras and digital Flipcam video shot by fans in the crowd. Jett Travolta died in January after suffering a seizure during a family vacation in the residence that the actor has at Old Bahama Bay on Grand Bahama Island. He was the only son of the 54-year-old Hollywood star.

NEW YORK - The wealthiest Americans are getting poorer, losing 300 billion dollars of their net worth over the past 12 months, according to an annual Forbes magazine ranking released Wednesday. The annual Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans found legendary investor Warren Buffett had lost the most cash — 10 billion dollars — as his holding company Berkshire Hathaway suffered severe losses. Topping the list was Microsoft founder turned disease-battling philanthropist Bill Gates, whose net worth was estimated at 50 billion dollars, down seven billion from last year. Buffett came in second, followed by Oracle Corp founder and CEO Lawrence Ellison, the only person on the top 10 list whose fortune remained unchanged — at 27 billion. The 400 wealthiest Americans had total net assets of 1.57 trillion dollars, down from 1.27 trillion. It was only the fifth time that the fortunes of members of the Forbes 400 had declined since its inception in 1982. Forbes attributed the loss of wealth to “faltering capital markets and real estate prices, along with fraud and divorce.” The losses affected 314 returning members and forced 32 plutocrats to fall off the list, including dis-
graced and jailed financier Allen Stanford, former chief of troubled Citigroup Sanford Weill and former Google billionaire Omid Kordestani, who faced a costly divorce. Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey came in 141st after losses of 400 million dollars. Only 28 members added to their wealth, among them banker Andrew Beal, who tripled his net worth to 4.5 billion dollars buying cheap loans and assets, coming in 52nd. MILAN - A “subtle hint of India” whispered down a catwalk here on Wednesday as collections by Indian designers Azara and Atsu were showcased in Milan Fashion Week’s “new upcoming designers” section. Alpana Chauhan, who launched the Azara line with her husband Neeraj in 2004, said her “fusion” styles “maintain a subtle hint of India in clothes that you can wear without feeling too ethnic.” Both Azara and Atsu propose Indian fabrics and techniques — tie dye, batik, embroidery, intricate beading — adapted to a global market. “It’s a matter of keeping the Indianness in terms of treatment... but in terms of wear, we keep it global,” said Chauhan, 30, noting that the collection’s traditional bridal kundan jewellery ornaments provide “just subtle bursts of colour.” Atsu Sekhose agrees: “The silhouettes are adaptations, to make them more modern, more comfortable.” Thus loose pants based on the dhoti zip closed instead of using the traditional string tie; a dress with draping like that of a sari is “not over the top,” says Sekhose, 32. Asked about providing the market with more revealing clothes than traditionally found in India, Chauhan said: “There’s a thin line between something being sensual or vulgar. We do have plunging necklines, but they’re not screaming for attention.” Both designers vary their styles for particular markets. “The Middle East market wants longer lengths, for example,” said Sekhose, also a product of the NIFT. He launched Atsu in 2007 for the domestic Indian market — where he has also had to cater for different tastes. “In India there are lots of diverse tastes,” said Sekhose, 32, who comes from India’s remote northeastern Nagaland hill state. “Delhi is a showoff city, they like to wear bling; Bombay is more Western, more revealing; down south in Chennai (or) Bangalore it’s a different market.” Overall, though, “Fashion is really booming in India,” he said. “Fashion is new to us.”

Both those issues have been resolved but it remains to be seen how deep seated the initial aggrievances went with the members and whether Chicago pays a price for that. Leonardo gets dreaded vote of confidence Agence France-Presse
MILAN - Following AC Milan’s embarrassing 1-0 home defeat to Swiss minnows FC Zurich in the Champions League, the Italian club’s vice-president Adriano Galliani renewed his faith in coach Leonardo. In most other walks of life that would provoke a sense of relief in a person whose job was on the line but in football it often precipitates a severing of ties. So it may well have been with mixed emotions that Leonardo received the news that Galliani had spoken openly of his support for the Brazilian. “We can do nothing but confirm our faith in Leonardo,” said Galliani. “At the moment things are going badly. We’ve lived through many good years but now things aren’t going well. “A draw would have been the fair result but we’ll go forwards. How will we end this crisis? We’ll see.” The obvious and decidedly Italian option would usually be to fire the coach and hope the shock and some new direction helps the players to raise their game. But if that would be the regular course of action, there are certainly mitigating circumstances in the San Siro corridors that may exclude such an option. This is a team who sold Kaka in the summer for 67 million euros and thus rid themselves of their highest earner.
They also got shot of the large salaries of former coach Carlo Ancelotti, David Beckham, Andrei Shevchenko and Paolo Maldini — all of which were certainly draining the club’s resources. In their place have been acquired far smaller financial commitments. Leonardo was already on the club’s payroll in a fairly non-descript role so his promotion to first team coach will not have brought with it the kind of payout the hiring of a big name might otherwise have. Although salary details are not always easily acquired in Italy, it is fair to say that the combined wages of Leonardo, Huntelaar, Oddo and Onyewu do not come even close to those of Kaka, Ancelotti, Beckham, Shevchenko and Maldini. Any Milan fans wondering why their club sold their best player and lost their talisman to retirement, only to replace them with players of relatively modest ability and impact, would be
advised to take a glance at Milan’s balance sheet, for that is surely where the answer lies. And that too would most likely explain why Leonardo will be given as much time and as much leeway as Milan can possibly get away with before the fans start pushing for president Silvio Berlusconi’s head to be the one laid on the chopping block. Milan are simply unable or unwilling to spend money and Leonardo presents their cheapest coaching option. How else can one explain a club of Milan’s stature accepting their team has scored only one goal in four home matches that saw modest Bologna, Bari and Zurich amonsgst the San Siro visitors.

Robben injury is serious, admits Bayern’s van Gaal Agence France-Presse
MUNICH - Bayern Munich’s 0-0 draw at home to Juventus in Wednesday’s Champions League clash could have cost them the services of winger Arjen Robben for a while, according to coach Louis van Gaal. Robben only arrived at Bayern from Real Madrid last month, but he hobbled off just before the break in the Group A match at Munich’s Allianz Arena with an injury to his right knee leaving van Gaal far from optimistic. “I think it is a serious injury - it doesn’t look good,” said van Gaal with more information expected to be released on Thursday. Bayern dominated the first half, but failed to hit the back of the net to make their advantage pay off as Juventus returned to Turin with a point. “In the first half, we played outstandingly well against a top team, but we did not get the win,” said van Gaal. “We were dominant and Juventus did not create many chances. “I think we haven’t played as well as that in the first half in any other games this season. “We had many chances and did not get the goal. “That is very unfortunate, but if we keep playing like that, then it is just a matter of time before the wins come.” With group rivals Maccabi Haifa losing 1-0 at Bordeaux, Bayern stay

Wenger not tempted by retirement as milestone passes Agence France-Presse
LONDON - Arsene Wenger became the longest-serving manager in Arsenal’s history on Thursday but neither that milestone nor the fact that he turns 60 next month have triggered any thoughts of retirement. Wenger, whose arrival at Highbury in the autumn of 1996 was famously greeted with an “Arsene Who?” headline, eclipsed the reign of George Allison in the 1930s and 1940s by spending 4,749 days at the helm. The Frenchman can look back with pride on 13 years which have transformed the ‘boring, boring Arsenal’ of old into a club synonomous with his own unique brand of pass-and-move football. Along the way, Wenger has delivered three Premier League titles, including the unbeaten campaign of his 2003/2004 Invincibles, four FA Cups and a place in the 2006 Champions League final. Success on the pitch financed the move from Highbury to the 60,000seat Emirates Stadium and last week saw the north London club announce turnover of 313 million pounds for their last financial year, a record for a British football club. The Frenchman takes pride in those achievements, as he does in the fostering of young talents such
as Cesc Fabregas and in the astute transfer market judgement that have helped put the club on such a sound financial footing. But he readily admits that setbacks such as the defeat by Barcelona in Paris three years ago and lasts season’s Champions League semi-final loss to Manchester United still rankle and provide him with all the motivation he needs to carry on. “Losing the semi-final of the Champions League to Manchester United last year was the lowest point, because we did not play at our level,” he recalled. Asked if thoughts of retirement had entered his head, Wenger responded with a dismissive snort. “I have never had a day when I think I could live without football,” he said. “I know one day it will happen, but you should not live every day knowing you are going to die - you live knowing that you want to live. “You will know if you are not hungry enough any more, but other people will tell you if you are not good enough any more.” Wenger is not without his critics among Arsenal fans, many of whom see his apparent reluctance to spend more freely as the reason why the club have not claimed any significant silverware since the 2005 FA Cup.

If I do decide to stay, I wouldn’t go to any of the small teams, where I would not have the chance to fight for the championship.” “If I race next year, that would be my goal, otherwise there is no reason to be in Formula One. I achieved what I wanted, but if I race, then of course, I want to win more races and championship titles.” He has been linked with a move to McLaren to join Lewis Hamilton. Raikkonen said there were many reasons for his decision to agree to terminate his Ferrari contract one year early. “In F1, even if you have a contract, there can always be different options in life. There is not just one reason why this happened and we all reached the same decision,” he said. “I’m still happy with what I have done in making this decision and I think I will still have a good future. “Usually when you make a contract, you stick with it to the end, but there were reasons why it did not work out, but I’m okay with how things have turned out. “I have nothing bad to say about them (Ferrari) as we always had a good relationship.
The veteran Brazilian trails his Brawn GP team-mate Briton Jenson Button by 15 points in the title race with three races remaining. “For me, it’s pretty simple. It’s winning, winning, winning, basically,” he said. “It’s pretty simple. People have said if I change my tactics and go flat-out that’s all I need to do, but I’ve been flat-out a long time. “That’s all there is for me to try — to win the race without getting worried about where Jenson is. After the race, we get to see if I did conquer more or less points.” Barrichello said he was not concerned too much by the prospects of rain, and was more worried about the threat from the Red Bull team of Sebastien Vettel and Mark Webber. “We always knew that coming to Suzuka it was always a track that very much favoured the Red Bulls, so we have that in mind. It has been a little bit more humid than normal for Suzuka,” he said. “So if it’s a little bit hotter, that will help our tyre situation. Alonso’s move to Ferrari from Renault next year, he said: “I think it’s a case of love. “There’s been talk of Fernando going to Ferrari for the past two years and there were times he was certain that he would go and other times when it wasn’t so certain that he would go. “It was a surprise that it was announced so early because they had contracts with Kimi (Raikkonen), so I don’t know the arrangement there. “Fernando going there? He was wishing for this so badly. Ferrari were as well. He’s Latin, it’s going to easily gel and it’s going to be good. Fernando is a top-class driver — for me, he’s on the level of a Michael Schumacher. “He can really be on the top, and I (hope) my friend Felipe Massa can hold onto him, as Fernando is going to be the man to be beaten.” As to his own future, Barrichello said: “It’s fairly open, from a positive side. I’m in a much better shape than I’ve ever been in, winning races and being on the top of the paddock’s mouth have opened up my chances a lot.
