A family wedding at

Hug Point EMILY & KRIS KNIGHT

heir first date was breakfast at Sterling’s Restaurant in Richland, Washington. Now, Kris and Emily Knight are married, and they return to the restaurant every year to mark the beginning of their relationship. Upon meeting, the couple shared a common love for the outdoors, hiking, exploring, the beach, mountains and a deep importance placed on family and spending time with their children. So it was no surprise that when they decided to get married at Hug Point State Park in May of last year, the event centered on the new couple’s shared children. “We have three children. Our two boys, Ethan and Uriah, served as our ring bearers and our daughter, Everly, and her two cousins, Cora and Dillan, were our flower girls,” Emily said. Emily’s sister was her maid of honor and Kris’s childhood best friend, John, was the best man. The groomsmen were Kris’ younger brothers, and Emily’s brother-in-law, Matthew, was the officiant. The theme of the ceremony was a “comfortable beach vibe” with dusty rose and navy colors. Emily wore a gown from Blueberry Bridal Boutique in Kennewick, and Kris wore white linen pants and a navy shirt. The bridesmaids selected a dress in navy blue, any style they wanted, and the groomsmen wore navy slacks and a white shirt. An image that comes to mind when thinking back to the ceremony is Kris and Emily keeping their eyes locked while walking down the aisle. “It was such an intimate and special moment; we couldn’t wait to be married in front of our loved ones,” they said.

The couple is grateful for the visual images that were preserved by Cannon Beach photographer Julie Adams. “Everything felt comfortable and natural. She had wonderful suggestions for pictures; it’s almost impossible to pick our favorites,” Emily said. One image is a black and white photograph of the couple embracing on the beach with their friends and family in a semicircle around them and the ocean in the distance. The reception following the ceremony was held at the Cannon Beach Chamber Community Hall. Mama’s Artisan Sweets in Beaverton supplied the cake, which the couple described in one word as “divine.” Music was provided by Justin from Portland’s Noteworthy DJs”. When asked if there were any mini disasters that often come with a wedding, Emily and Kris were only able to recall moments of humor like their officiant being ordained by the “Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster,” or when their youngest son decided to to do The Griddy — a viral TikTok dance — in front of strangers in the parking lot. “He was the hit of the party,” Emily said. The family antics continued at a reception in the Cannon Beach Chamber Community Hall, where the couple’s older son sang “Let it Go” for all the wedding guests. “He rocked it,” Emily said. The Knights are looking forward to a honeymoon in Iceland in the summer, but when thinking back to Hug Point, they summarized the attitude of the day “we are both relaxed people and just let the day flow. n a wintry February day, Haley Kerr and Trevin Kreiger gathered among their closest friends and family members to celebrate the couple’s love. “Since we got married in February, there were a few external elements that made things interesting along the way, (like) king tides, wind advisories, heavy rain and possible snow in the forecast,” Kerr said. “But when our wedding weekend arrived, the sun came out, the tides subsided and the ocean breeze blew away the ominous clouds. It was a beautiful day all around.” The wedding and reception went well, as the culmination of much planning and preparation. Kerr and Kreiger met online about eight-and-a-half years ago. They enjoyed a first date at a taphouse in northwest Portland where they drank IPAs, played Battleship and “had an amazing evening together.” “We’re so thankful to have found our ‘forever person,’” Kerr said. Kerr spent much of her childhood on Seacliff State Beach in Aptos, California. Kreiger proposed during a trip to the same area while the couple was on a walk. “It was romantic, sentimental and uncomplicated — beyond perfect,” Kerr said. “I was in total shock. I had no idea Trevin was going to propose. Needless to say, when I turned around and saw him down on one knee, I was incredibly excited and pretty emotional in the best of ways. It’s a day I will never forget.” The couple’s wedding ceremony and reception were held at Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach. “High tides prevented us from getting married on the beach as planned, but our indoor ceremony was wonderful,” Kerr said.

After the ceremony and reception, the couple finished the evening with a bonfire on the beach. “The Oregon Coast is a very special place to us. We both spent a lot of time on the beach and in the ocean growing up,” Kerr said. “Nowadays, we visit the coast as often as possible, either with all of our kids or as a couple on quick getaways. The calming, healing and rejuvenating sights and sounds of the Pacific coast are unlike any other.” The couple’s vendors helped make their day special, including photographer Julie Adams Photography of Cannon Beach; Alyssa Underwood Makeup & Artistry, of Seaside; Mia Norlander, owner of Bloomin’ Crazy Floral in Astoria; Sarah McCloskey, of Sew Truly Yours in Beaverton; True Society by The White Dress in Beaverton; DJ Rich Ellis of Pro DJs in Portland; and Sarah Bunce and her team at Surfsand Resort. “Our vendors were a pleasure to work with,” Kerr said. Since the wedding, Kerr and Kreiger have enjoyed spending time with each other and with their newly blended family of seven. “We love having fun and making lasting memories together like skiing and snowboarding at Mt. Hood and Mt. Bachelor, boogie boarding and building forts at the beach, hiking, cave diving in Bend, exploring and fishing at Henry Hagg Lake,” Kerr said. “We’re always up for adventure.”

A winter wedding by the sea

here does an event planner hold her own December wedding? When Jolene Wiza started planning her wedding with Steve Schmidt, she knew she wanted a celebration that didn’t feel too much like going to work, so the couple opted for an elopement ceremony at the Stephanie Inn in Cannon Beach. In 2011, the two connected online and decided to test the waters with a “safe” Sunday afternoon coffee date in northeastern Wisconsin, where they both lived. Four hours and many coffees later, they were heading headlong into romance. Right away, the couple built upon their shared love of adventure and planned many trips centered on hiking, biking, diving and exploring. A few years later, when Jolene had a work trip in Portland, the couple decided to visit Cannon Beach. When they saw Haystack Rock, they both fell in love. On their second trip, they stayed at the Stephanie Inn — and loved it so much, they returned five more times.

Twelve years later, the couple visited Redwood National Park, and at the bottom of a hiking trail among a grove of redwoods, Steve knelt to propose. “We always knew we would get married eventually, and since we knew (we) weren’t having children, there was never a rush,” Jolene said. She was surprised and thrilled. As they began thinking about a wedding, the thought of a large event was a turn-off. “At our age, we wanted to keep things low key and more intimate with just a few friends in a special place,” the couple explained. They thought of their memories at Stephanie Inn, and when they learned the inn offered elopement packages, they decided it would be the perfect option. “The wedding planner, Kate at Stephanie Inn, was so kind and professional. She did an amazing job making sure our day was perfect,” Jolene said. The magical day was captured by their wedding photographer, Julie Adams. The inn allows up to eight guests to participate, so the couple invited several of their closest friends to be a part of their special day. They picked a Sunday in December to have a quieter day in Cannon Beach, and while it turned out to be a misty day, it reminded them of their first visit nearly 10 years earlier. Everything with the ceremony was perfect, and the fog and rain made it even more mystical. Jolene wanted an elegant but nontraditional feel to the nuptials, so she chose a gown of black lace overlaying honey-colored silk to complement Steve’s black suit. Red, white and beige roses made up the wedding party’s flowers and lent a timeless elegance to the wedding photos that featured a mist-clad Haystack Rock in the background. After the ceremony, the couple shared their first dance on the knoll overlooking the ocean with friends, followed by a reception and wine pairing dinner in the Stephanie Inn Dining Room. To be able to share a special place with friends, who they had told about Cannon Beach, was especially meaningful. Jolene and Steve plan to go back to the Stephanie Inn for their one-year wedding anniversary in December, and for many more years to come.
